Designing An Original Toy For Children Aged Eight And Under
Introduction As a part of our final project for GEEN 1400 Engineering Projects, we had to
design an original toy for children aged eight and under. Each group has to come up with a new
toy which has not yet existed. The toy requires the implementation of engineering skills in its
manufacturing and design process. Some of those competence are obtained from in class
workshops or personal experience, though students are also allowed to take workshops outside
of class, in the ITLL, or Idea Forge. Several of the skills most groups require are: laser cutting,
CAD, electronics, 3D printing, etc. Not everyone in the group possesses skills for all aspects of
the project. Students divide among themselves and each member takes over a part of the
project, however, team members still communicate with each other in completing their tasks.
Later, they piece in their parts and collaborate to figure out remaining tasks and possible
improvements to the project. The deadline for this project is the Design Expo where students
present their project to judges visiting from local companies. Our section s theme of the final
project is toys, particularly for those aged eight and under. Therefore, we wanted to construct a
toy which is fun, yet suitable for children within that age group. We decided to design an LED
maze for our final project. It primarily consist of a hockey themed maze with several LED beams
as barriers. A mini air hockey puck is part of the toy and the user utilizes it to glide

Pros And Cons Of The Solow Paradox
lt;a href= quot;http://www.geocities.com/vaksam/ quot; gt;Sam Vaknin s Psychology, Philosophy,
Economics and Foreign Affairs Web Sites
The PRODUCTIVE HARDWARE
The world is debating the Solow Paradox. Named after the Nobel laureate in economics, it was
stated by him thus: quot; You can see the computer age everywhere these days, except in the
productivity statistics quot;. The venerable economic magazine, quot; The Economist quot; in its
issue dated July 24th, quotes the no less venerable Professor Robert Gordon ( quot;one of America
s leading authorities on productivity quot;) p.20:
quot;...the productivity performance of the manufacturing sector of the United States economy since
1995 has been abysmal rather than admirable. Not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This has been duly detected by Robert Gordon in his quot;Has the New Economy rendered the
productivity slowdown obsolete? quot;.
But for this increased productivity to trickle down to the rest of the economy a few conditions have
to be met.
The transition from old technologies to a new one (the computer renders many a technology
obsolete) must not involve too much quot;creative destruction quot;. The costs of getting rid of
old hardware, software, of altering management techniques or adopting new ones, of shedding
redundant manpower, of searching for new employees to replace the unqualified or unqualifiable,
of installing new hardware, software and of training new people in all levels of the corporation are
enormous. They must never exceed the added benefits of the newly introduced technology in the
long run. Hence the crux of the debate. Is IT more expensive to introduce, run and maintain than
the technologies that it so confidently aims to replace? Will new technologies be spun off the core
IT in a pace sufficient to compensate for the disappearance of old ones? As the technology mature,
will it overcome its childhood maladies (lack of operational reliability, bad design, non specificity,
immaturity of the first

Causes And Risks Of Red Meat
Risks in Red Meats
Red meat is consumed in mass amounts all over the world. However, there are risks involved in
consuming so much red meat. Past research has tied red meat to increased risks of diabetes,
cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, as well as mad cow disease. Red meat intake also has an
increased risk of mortality and detrimental effects on the environment. What is put into the meat
when it is processed adds to these risks. There are some benefits to eating red meat such as getting
essential vitamins and minerals like B 12 and iron. It also gives people protein and helps make
red blood cells. Too much red meat intake negatively affects people s health, causes many
problems, and creates increased risks for diseases and certain cancers.
There are many risks when people eat high levels of red meat. A study suggests that the link
between consumption of red meat and heart disease may stem from gut microbes breaking down
carnitine, a compound found in red meat. These microbes help break down food, in the process
forming a variety of small compounds. One of these compounds is trimethylamine, which can be
metabolized to form trimethylamine N oxide (TMAO). TMAO has been associated with
atherosclerosis, a disease in which fat builds up in the arteries. A team led by Dr. Stanley L.
Hazen and Robert A. Koeth asked people to consume beef and a carnitine supplement, regular
meat eaters produced more TMAO than vegans or vegetarians (Torgan 2013). When participants
took antibiotics to suppress gut microbes, they produced less TMAO after eating carnitine
(Torgan 2013). This study suggests that gut microbes are involved in the production of TMAO
from carnitine putting people more at risk for heart disease and cardiac events like heart attacks,
strokes, and death as well as atherosclerosis. These health issues lead to cardiovascular risk and
disease.
Red meat consumption is associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes. A study found that
three extra servings of red meat every week increases the risk of developing diabetes by 50 percent
(qtd. by Scutti, 2013). With increased intake of red meat there is a higher risk for people to get
type 2 diabetes. Reducing red meat consumption by 0.5 servings per day had a

Plato s Ideal City
The Ideal City In Plato s book Republic he describes what he thinks would be an ideal city, for
this city to be ideal it would have to be just. In his just city there are three classes of people; gold,
silver, and bronze/iron; known as the National Division of Labor. The guardians of the city are
placed in the gold category, the auxiliaries in the silver, and the farmers and craftsmen are in the
bronze/iron category. Plato argues that the National Division of Labor reflects the requirements of
nature and produces a harmonious whole. Wisdom, courage, moderation, and justice are the four
virtues that this ideal city must have to be just. The guardians, also known as philosopher kings,
being in the gold class of the city, are wise,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The city wouldn t be able to exist without the bronze/iron category; the farmers and craftsmen
grow all the food and make every product that is needed. If I had to choose which category I
would like to be in I would choose the bronze/iron category. I wouldn t prefer to be in the gold or
silver category because I wouldn t want my life completely controlled and not be able to have
any privacy. Having my life all about the rest of the city and having my life planned out isn t
something that I would enjoy, I would want to make my own decisions and not having them
made for me. Sure you could say that that is selfish and unjust but that is what would truly make
me happy. Plato says that to truly be happy that you have to flourish and thrive as opposed
having pleasure. I think that if I was in the bronze/iron class that I would flourish and thrive
because in that class I have more opportunities to succeed in different areas of life. In the bronze
/iron class you are able to live your own life, the life you want to live instead of being told what
to do and how to live every day. In this ideal and just city, everyone: the guardians, auxiliaries,
and farmers and craftsmen, have to do their own task, otherwise it wouldn t be just. The people in
these three classes all have to flourish and thrive in whichever class they are in. The guardians can

A Narrative Essay About Religion
David panhandled on the street for enough money to send his real family to New York for
Christmas. It was a long flight but his two kids didn t give a care. As soon as they saw their dad,
they started barraging him with questions. They were always interested in maths because of their
father s occupation. The eldest son started first, Why did we ditch the fifth axiom? Why did
Tupper make an equation and not ware? How do you win a guessing game? Whats a hyperbolic

Have you ever hunted for the elusive fourth klein bottle? What s your favorite number? Do

homomorphic encryption? What happens if you stand inside a spherical mirror? The two had
been away from him for too long and had built quite an extensive list of valid questions that David
felt was his fatherly responsibility to answer. He stood there with his hands in their hair and a very
homely smile upon his face. He then started trying to comprehend what he was just asked. Three

Being A Reasonable Thinker
Being a reasonable thinker is a strategy that has benefit me. Working at a church could look like
working at a place that everybody has everything worked out. That is not even close in my
experience. People often thing that because we follow a faith that we will overlook things and
let things go. I had a time when I was working with young people in a competition to get
scholarships within the church. The competition is very hard and very physical. Being
reasonable help me keep my cool when my superiors would walk into my practices and ask me to
do things that were not safe or physically impossible for the kids that I had. I knew that I could ask
these kids to do that. I was not going to compromise their health because they wanted to win a
competition.

How does Newton s Third Law explain how airfoils create lift? (When the air pushes down on the
wings of a plane wing, the direction of the air and the shape of the foil sends the air up and over
the leading edge and then downward as it passes over the wing. This push down on the wing is
countered with an equal upward thrust, creating lift.)
What is the angle of attack? (How steeply the wing is tilted toward the incoming air.)
Why is the pitch of the propeller different in the middle than the outer edge? (Velocity and pitch
both affect lift. Since the outer tip is going quite fast relative to the air, it does not need a steep
pitch in order to generate a good amount of lift. The parts nearer the center are not moving as
quickly relative to the air, so they need a steeper pitch in order to generate a comparable amount of

The MacTeer sisters, Frieda and Claudia are friends of the troubled 11 year old Pecola. They often

Explosive Traces and Forensic Analysis
Explosives are used for a variety of applications from military operations to mining. However,
these materials can also be used in criminal investigations such as terrorists who threaten harm or
cause death and destruction. Explosives can be categorised into two main forms: high
explosives and low explosives. High explosives are explosive materials that detonate. This
means that the explosive shock passes through the material at a speed, faster than the speed of
sound. High explosives generally detonate with an explosive velocity ranging from 3 to 9 km/s.
Low explosive are compounds where the rate of decomposition proceeds through the material at
a speed less than the speed of sound. The decomposition is spread by a flame. This is known as
deflagration. Under normal conditions, low explosives undergo deflagration at rates varying from
a few centimetres per second to roughly 400 metre per second. It is possible for low explosives to
deflagrate extremely quickly producing an effect which is similar to detonation of high explosives.
This usually occurs when ignited in a confined space and can happen due to high pressure or high
temperatures. The detection and/or identification of trace amounts of explosives is an important
aspect of forensic investigations. Some methods of detection can also identify the explosives, some
cannot for example the use of canine detection, and the dog can smell the explosive but cannot say
what it is. Techniques for detection and identification

Perks Of Being A Wallflower Character Analysis
The novel Perks of Being a Wallflower written by Stephen Chbosky is a book that revolves
around the life of a young teenage boy named Charlie. Charlie is in his first year of high school
and is shown to encounter many different types of people and experience many different
emotions throughout the novel. Charlie is at a vulnerable age where a person can easily be
influenced by the actions of the people around him and all the emotions he s feeling can

I ve been smoking it all the time since (3.16). This shows the reader that having Bob as a friend
made it convenient for Charlie to get drugs. Coming of age is a time in a person s life when they
gradually transition from a child to an adult and become more mature. This has an important role
in charlie s exploration of drugs as during this time period teenagers usually go through a lot of
trails and obstacles, questioning themselves about what they really want or do. Charlie can be
seen going through these trials as he thinks to himself that Maybe my whole family has been

at its peak and he s conflicting with himself as wants an excuse not to stop so he wondered to
himself if his family are doing the same things as him but just not sharing it with each other. To add
to that Charlie also remembers his aunt and her alcohol abuse saying My aunt Helen drank a lot.
My Aunt Helen took drugs a lot. My aunt Helen had many problems with men and boys (2.9).
This makes Charlie think that it s natural for adults to consume a great deal of alcohol or do drugs
to deal or at least escape their problems.

sometimes results in him having mixed emotions. Initially the first time Charlie ever had drugs it

Citizen Kane Accomplishments
Orson Welles is commonly praised for his popular movie, Citizen Kane, but that wasn t the only
movie he has directed and acted in. In his career, Welles acted in several plays, used his voice on
radio shows, created ten complete films, and acted in a number of movies himself. Even
though, Citizen Kane was a major influence in the filmmaking world, it wasn t all Orson should
be remembered for. Welles was a dedicated director, producer, writer, and actor who always found
a way to use his creativity and passion to create films. Welles got lucky and started peeking into

Carl Jung Collective Unconscious Analysis
Carl Jung s theory of the collective unconscious goes to explain how certain symbols, pictures,
and memories from ancestors are instilled in the people of today. Examples of the collective
unconscious would be developed within the four main archetypes. These archetypes are the
persona, the anima/ animus, the shadow, and the self. The persona is also called the mask. This
archetype displays how the world sees a person. One can choose how they carry themselves on the
outside yet think completely different on the inside. This is what will be judged by the world, is
your persona or your mask. The anima/ animus is the thought that each sex has tendencies of the
other. Therefore, a woman has some masculine aspects and a man has certain feminine... Show

Indemnity health plans run on a retrospective payment system. A member has a monthly premium.
Co pays and a deductible. Upon visits the provider submits claims for services rendered to the
insurance company, upon which the insurance company pays their part and the member is billed
for the remaining balance to be paid out of pocket.
With indemnity plans employers deduct the monthly premium from payroll of each employee on
the plan. Both the member and the insurance company pay for services rendered. Upon receipt of
the services the insurer pays the provider their portion if the deductible has been met. The member
is then responsible for the remaining balance and the co pay at the time of service.
The structure of an indemnity plan is completely open access . The member may choose any
provider or specialist they would like. In an indemnity plan there are no restrictions on providers
or provider type. It is the member s responsibility to seek and sign on with their preferred provider

Positive aspects of indemnity plans include the liberty of the member to choose their preferred

indemnity plans from a members stand point is the cost of these plans. Premiums and deductibles

Survival Of Tsarism Essay
How far were divisions amongst opponents responsible for the survival of Tsarist rule, 1881 1905?
Divisions of opposing groups of the Tsar were important to the survival of Tsarist Russia.
However, other factors such as the church, the belief of the divine right, the army and the Okhrana
were also effective in keeping the Tsar in a state of power.
Firstly, the opposition groups of the Tsar were known as the Populists, the Liberals and the
Marxists. Each group had its own ideas on what was needed for Russia and each group wanted
change, however, there were many problems within the groups and none of them were willing to

someone who had been put on the throne by God himself?
Thirdly, the Tsar had the benefit of controlling the army and the secret police force, the Okhrana.
The Tsar was the commander and chief of the Russian army, he had total control of it and they
had been loyal to the Tsar for many years (Nicholas I had an input in creating the Okhrana). The
army and the Okhrana were used very efficiently by the Tsars. If anybody opposed the Tsar with
violent protests or demonstrations, the army would be called in and many of the protesters
would be shot and trampled on by horses. As well as removing current threats to the Tsar, the
armies input effected possible opponents, as they knew what their own fate would be if they also
tried to oppose the Dear father . The Okhrana was also very effective, it was known for infiltrating
opposition groups and dividing them even further. If an opposition group member was caught, they
would be exiled to Siberia to die a cold and

Punk
This is Peter Inskip coming to you live from triple j, with this week s segment in our Music and
Society series. For the next half hour we ll be looking at the punk music scene starting in the mid
seventies.
Punk was born in the early 70 s in New York, and is still evolving.
No other style in the history of rock, has been so uncompromising, or made such a dramatic
impression as Punk Rock. The two versions of punk, the original American and its British
descendent, were very different.
British punk was aggressive and angry. It demanded immediate change and had no interest in
working for the solution. The Sex Pistols typified British Punk with such songs as quot;Anarchy In

This generation of British youth who embraced punk left school to enter a climate of harsh
unemployment and limited options. Britain in 1975 had one of its highest unemployment rates
since World War II and this bleak scenario offered few alternatives. Punk for the British teenager
was an outlet for their feelings of inadequacy as many young people struggled with the demoralising
effects of welfare and unemployment.
British society is traditionally quite conservative and is reflected in the institution of the monarchy
itself, perhaps one of the best recognised hallmarks of a social system that is very stratified, and
emphasises distinct class differences. Symbols of conservative middle class order and organisation
quickly became targets for the angst of disenfranchised British youth.
Punk Rock bands such as the Sex Pistols attracted a huge following and their choice of subject

Compare And Contrast Amazon Pricing Strategy
Due to multiple external and internal factors, pricing strategy has become one of the main
focuses for a ranging scale of businesses. For some small companies, cost leadership from low
quality materials and less overheads allow low prices, resulting in competitiveness and survival of
their business, in comparison to larger businesses who are able to charge more as they may have
better quality products and large finances to allow above the line promotion. Furthermore, their
approaches to the market place will differ; businesses who aim to charge less, will market their
products at people who can demographically afford the products and understand their goods/service
are priceand income elastic. In a dissimilar fashion, organisations who look to charge higher,
approach marketplaces with strong brands for their loyal customers with the belief the high prices
are acceptable. Regarding Jeff Bezos quote, the statement ended with we will be the second . The
Amazon billionaire acknowledges the importance of meeting pricingstrategy for consumer needs
and desires. Thus, with a clear focus of keeping prices low, Amazon select suitable operations such
as being an e tailer and marketingtechniques to stay successful. This essay will critically analyse
the comparisons between the different scales of businesses and to which the way they strategically
operate, approach the market and the factors that enforce this.

The Biased American Dream By James Truslow Adam
The Biased American Dream The American Dream is a commonly known theme among the
general population today. It states that with the right amount of work any US citizen can obtain
success in their lives. This idea was popularized around 1930 with James Truslow Adam s book
The Epic of America bringing about the idea that there is opportunity for everyone in America if
they can work hard enough.3 This idea of the American dream however began much earlier than
the 20th century. Rather it began in the west in the 1800s as US citizens gained the ability to cross
the frontier and begin completely new lives, whether those lives became advantageous or not.
According to the American Dream the western settler s level of work, not race or gender, would
determine whether or not he or she became successful. However this was not the case. The
American Dream of the 19th century is disparate from the one known today. Unlike Adam s
American Dream of the 1930s, this western American Dream was heavily skewed towards white
male, US citizen obtainment. This was because the main drive of the western frontier was for white
male US citizens to profit from the newly obtained land and keep it for themselves thus fulfilling
their new American Dream. In the mid19th century, economic opportunities existed in the Western
Frontier of America, allowing people to go and accomplish their dreams if they had the motivation,
but those opportunities were prohibitive for women, nonwhites, or non US

Challenges and Opportunities of the Global Insurance Industry
Introduction
The global insurance industry seems to have escaped the worst of the financial crisis in comparison
to other financial institutions. Day to day business has been relatively unaffected but the area that
gave the most cause for concern has arisen from exposures to risky financial instruments. The
Reactions Magazine s Global Insurance Conference 2009 was held in Swissotel, Zurich,
Switzerland. At this conference the financial services industry tried to re set itself following the

Analysis Of The Knife Of Never Letting Go
The Knife of Never Letting Go Rough Draft In the book, The Knife of Never Letting Go by
Patrick Ness, Todd is the only boy in Prentisstown that is a month away from becoming a man.
Todd is forced to leave his one and only beloved town, with only his dog,a knife and a backpack,
running for his life from an army that can hear his every thought. The Knife of Never Letting Go
is based on, superiority is lost when manhood is developed and friendships are grown through
identity. One of the few things Todd is given as he is forced to leave is a knife, It s a hunting
knife, the big ratchety one with the bone handle and the serrated edge that cuts practically

Todd has taken a step closer to entering manhood, and the knife has taken a step of having less
power in his eyes. When Aaron is telling Todd to kill him, Viola takes the knife and kills him,
And gravity takes his body and he slumps sideways. Away from the pulpit. And over the edge.
And disappears under the wall of water. Taking the knife with him (Ness, 463). As soon as the
knife and Aaron hit the ground, all of Todd s superiority and power is lost and he becomes a man.
Todd has humbled himself and that is the real definition of a man, and Todd has to learn that.
Todd s dog, Manchee, plays a big role in loyalty and the friendship. Because Todd is the only boy
left of his town he is given a dog for company, so suddenly here s this brand new dog as a present
for my birthday last year when I never said I wanted any dog, that what I said I wanted was for
Cillian to finally fix the fission bike... (Ness, 3). It is obvious that Todd doesn t want the dog and
he is ungrateful for it. Even if Todd has already had this dog for almost an entire year he is

Parenting Styles In Psychology
Psychology is the science of the mind and behavior of living beings. This area of study originally
began in December 1879 by a German college professor named Wilhelm Wundt, but it is still a
widely researched topic today. Over the past few centuries, psychologists have dedicated their lives
to researching how the mindand actions of others correlate. Through their research, they have
discovered concepts such as sensation and perception, learning, memory, thinking, motivation and
emotions, health, and personalities. These discoveries have contributed greatly to society to help
explain why some people behave differently than others. Scientists have also learned that people are
not born knowing everything, but rather they develop over their lifespan. Factors such as parenting
styles, psychological disorders, genetics, environments, and personality components are present in
the development of people, including myself. These elements affect the outcome of someone s
mental and physical decisions. Parenting styles are one of the most impactful factors of a person s
development in life. The three major parenting styles are authoritarian, permissive, and
authoritative. Authoritarian parents forceful and they use many rules and expect complete respect
out of their children. Permissive parents are very relaxed in their requests and punishments for their
children. Thirdly, authoritative parents are demanding and hold expectations, but they also
encourage their children to have open

Orville Wright was born in Dayton, Ohio, on August 19, 1871, while Wilbur was born on April 16,
1867 in Millville, Indiana. Orville Wright was considered the main genius behind designing the
airplane. Neither of them attended college, Wilbur did not go because of a skating accident that he
had, and both of them had to earn money after their mother s death. Their heavier than air plane was
made with eight years of research, and one thousand dollars. The brothers were inventors
throughout their entire lives; they created a printing press, a calculator that could multiply, and a
simple typewriter. They also made several items which they never patented, to keep themselves
occupied. Together, they started the industry of aviation worldwide, and they created the basic laws

Were The Colonists Justified In The Revolutionary War
Hook. Both during and before The Revolutionary War happened, Britain killed many of the Patriots
who fought against independence from Britain. King George III made laws that took advantage of
the colonists and Britain did not give them equal rights. The Patriots were justified in seeking
independence from England, because England abused the colonists, capitalized on them, and
controlled their rights.
One reason the Patriots were right for wanting to separate from England is that they were abused
by England. On March 5, 1770, the Boston Massacre took place. This fight was a clash between
the British soldiers and the Boston Colonists (Garcia R44). During the massacre, five colonists
were killed by the British soldiers. After this event took ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One way England controlled their rights was through placing restrictions on trade. When this
rule was implemented the colonist grew angry. Not only did Britain not have all the supplies
that the colonies needed but they taxed very high on all of the goods the colonies needed or
wanted. Another example of when England controlled the colonists rights is when King George
III closed their congress and said that Parliament had supreme rule over the colonies. In this
instance King George III eliminated colonial self governance, so that they would be less likely
to uprise. The Patriots responded to this by becoming more frustrated with the king and
increased their desire for independence. Another example of when England controlled the
colonies rights is when they revolt the right to a fair trial for the colonist accused of wrongdoing.
If the colonists was accused of a wrongdoing by Britain, the British would capture them and send
them to England for a trial. The trial would occur in England rather in the colonies. The colonists
could not defend themselves because no one in England would defend them making for a very
unfair legal process. This is in contrast to what happened after the Boston Massacre, when the
colonists gave the five British soldiers a fair trial. During the trial, the accused British soldiers
were given John Adams, who is one of the best

The Target Strategy Of Wal Mart
Undifferentiated Target Strategy:
Wal Mart has an undifferentiated approach that stresses its low costs. This universal message is
delivered through all of its communications. This makes it easy for the audience to know what to
expect. Small companies more often emphasize local involvement and a personalized experience.
Message consistency also enables better word of mouth development, as all customers see the same
things.
Concentrated Target Strategy:
Providing the largest selection of hybrid vehicles in its make, carrying a reputation for reliable
cars, and by being one of the first car manufacturers to enter the hybrid market, Toyota was
successful in grabbing a large market share in the small segment. By capturing the largest market
share for hybrid vehicles, Toyota will not face as much difficulties when we enter the market of
electric vehicles because its hybrid vehicles have proved to be a leader in innovating new
opportunities for drivers. Toyota is a great example of concentrated marketing because it has
successfully dominated a large share in the small segment of hybrid vehicles.

We should invest in cleaner alternatives that will not only be better for us but the environment.
Although coal is used for electricity, there are other ways to produce electricity like water
power, wind generators, and solar energy. Water power, or hydropower is power that is derived
from the weight of the water. Hydroelectric power plants use dams or rivers to store water to then
release the water through turbines that spin it that produces electricity. Wind generators are like
water power but instead of water its wind. Wind turbines converts the wind s energy into electric
energy. Solar energy is similar but the energy comes from the sun. Some people use solar energy
for their homes so they save money and will not have to pay an electric bill. Instead of burning

Computerized Data Acquisition of a Second Order Reaction Abstract Introduction The rates at

Mindsets are beliefs which people hold on their most basic abilities and qualities. In the growth
mindset, individuals believe that they can develop their talents, brain, and skills. This creates an
environment for learning, resilience and a drive for growth. On the other hand, people believe in a
fixed mindset that primary qualities like abilities and intelligence are fixed and cannot be

strategy needed to maximize one s potential rather than a sign of weakness. For example,

Teaching individuals to develop growth mindset will encourage the process and not on talent or
intelligence. Teachers and parents can make children develop growth mindset by praising their
strategies and persistence, by giving them stories that emphasize on effort and the Importance of
learning, and teaching the students that a brain is a learning tool or machine (Gupta, et al., 2012).
The society is currently worshipping talent and individuals assume that having the ability or
superior intelligence with confidence is one way of succeeding. Overemphasis on talent or
intelligence leaves students prone to failure, afraid of challenges and they are not ready to accept
their shortcomings (Taylor, et al., 2014). Praising innate abilities of children, reinforce fixed
mindset, which can prevent people in workforces or young athletics and even the married people
to live up to their potential. By teaching students to have the growth mindset encourages them to
use their personal effort and come up with effective strategies and not talent or intelligence which
will help them to achieve highly in life and even in school. As theories suggest, students who have
growth mindset believes that learning is the crucial goal than performing well in school with good

Symbolism In The Island Of Dr Moreau
In the novel, The Island of Dr. Moreau, written by H.G Wells, suggests that human nature is part
of the natural world; we came from nature, we live in nature, it is part of us. Human beings are
born basically good, but are forced to do bad things due to external circumstances. In the scene
where scientist Edward Prendick is trapped in a lifeboat for eight days with these two other men,
Helmar and a sailor, they began to starve and are extremely dehydrated. Helmar and the sailor
begin to battle on who gets to be cannibalized so the other two can survive. Prendick did not want
to participate. The two men went at it while Prendick had a knife ready in his hand.

Ward, analyzes the question, are we naturally good? by discovering the answer through scientific
experiments. He explains how scientists used two mechanisms: intuition and reflection, to boil the
complexities of basic human nature into a simple question: do we cooperate when we overcome
our intuitive selfishness with rational self control, or do we act selfishly when we override our
intuitive cooperative impulses with rational self interest? The difference between intuition and
reflection is: intuitive process operates quickly, whereas reflective process operates slowly.
Scientists conducted two experimental paradigms (the prisoner s dilemma and a public goods game
) where participants had to make group based financial decisions requiring them to choose between
acting selfishly to maximize individual benefits or cooperatively maximizing group s benefits. The
results were that more intuitive decisions were made; associated with high levels of cooperation,
than reflective. These results suggest that our first impulse is to cooperate that Augustine and
Hobbes were wrong, and that we are fundamentally good creatures after all. Later, another
experiment was conducted. Researchers gathered 891 participants and had them play the public
goods game. The twist was that the individuals were forced to make their decision within 10
seconds. This study demonstrated

Political Socialization Paper
Political socialization the process in which people create and form new ideas that are mainly
about politics and make assumptions about political points in today s society. This is important
because, in reality people are able form ideas about political standing points, and socialize about
them with friends, family members, professors, and as well as in classes. I personally found that
one family members, my uncle, that always talk about politicshas influenced me to discover more
information towards government perspectives, and economic views. By doing this I can
understand what in today s society is happening because why wouldn t you want to know what
going on because changes that the government makes can impact the way we do our daily routines.
For example in the sociologytextbook there was one example that talked about how the government
has power and authority in the decision that you make. The government tells you what kind of

Inflammatory bowel disease is a chronic illness characterized by inflammation in the
gastrointestinal tract (Wolf, CDC, Mayo clinic, health direct, NHS choices). Patients suffering from
inflammatory bowel disease usually face with severe chronic pain in their stomach, diarrhea, which
may contain blood, loss of appetite, joint pains, skin problems, fever, fatigue, etc. Symptoms can

Though anyone at any age can develop inflammatory bowel disease, the people between the ages
of fifteen and thirty are more likely to get diagnosed with the disease, with about 10% of cases
occurring to individuals younger than eighteen (CDC). People who are direct descendents of
those with inflammatory bowel disease and other gastrointestinal problems are more likely to
develop the disease themselves (CDC, Wolf, Mayo clinic). Though anyone can develop the
disease, inflammatory bowel disease is most common in those with a European and Jewish
descent, who are Caucasian, and those who are White (CDC, Wolf, Mayo clinic). Females are more
likely to develop Crohn s, while males are more likely to develop Crohn s (CDC).
Inflammatory bowel disease is more common in developed countries, with a greater frequency in
urban areas than in rural areas, indicating globalization to be a contributing factor for
inflammatory bowel disease (CDC, Ghosh and Almadi). Australia seems to have one of the
highest incidence rates of the disease in the world with about 33,000 having colitis and 28,000
(health direct). Inflammatory bowel disease is also one of the most prevalent gastrointestinal
disease in the United States with the prevalence of the disease being greater than 200 cases per
100,000 and a total of about one million to 1.5 million people having the disease currently (CDC,

Little Caesar Pizza Advertising
The World of Pizza Pizza originated in Italy but eventually made its way to America. All America
did was make the pizza more fattening. Also, the availability of the pizza in America became a lot
easier with the fast food restaurants, such as Little Caesars and Papa Johns. Along with the fast
food chains came advertisements. Little Caesars was the first advertisement I choose. The
commercial shows a rather proper child sitting in a chair waiting for his dad to get home with a
pizzafrom Little Caesars. The kids father then walks in with a pizza this is not from Little
Caesars, takes a knee next to his kid to tell him that he got a great deal on pizza. The kid then says,

there very awkward for a second, then Peyton introduces Miles to Blue and Blue to Miles. While
Peyton is introducing the two the camera pans back and forth between Miles and Blue and it is
easy to see the disgust the that they have for one another. After Peyton is done introducing the
two, John, the owner of the food chain, comes over to the three to lighten up the mood. The
commercial then goes on to talk about how you can get two large two topping pizzas for only
eight dollars each. The commercial also has the slogan in it, better ingredients, better pizza, papa
johns . Again the product being advertised is pizza, this time from papa johns. The target audience
for this specific commercial would be people who enjoy watching football or just anyone who
wants to enjoy better pizza. The implied argument is that Papa John s has better ingredients, and
better pizza. The commercial tries to pursue the reader by using emotional appeal. Many people

Central America Case Study
Central America is a region where security threats are related to domestic issues rather than to state
actors. Its condition of bridge between the United States and the rest of Latin America makes it
particularly exposed to trafficking networks of drugs, weapons and human beings. In the last
century, a violent period of instability emerged due to the repression of communist insurgencies and
social unrest by militaryregimes associated with economic elites. After the end of this period, the
influence of the Armed Forcesin the political life declined and the defense budgets were reduced,
under the perception that conventional wars were an unlikely scenario. Additionally, Costa Rica
and Panama had their military banned by law, to focus its resources in development and social

Most of the people here were against the project but the mayor completely ignored our suggestions
and he even ignored the minister of the Environments suggestion, who suggested doing a study

Mohawk people from whom these decisions were directly affecting but the general consensus which
was not necessarily in support of the expansion.
On March 10, 1990 the people of Kanesatake took a stand in the Pines on a dirt road that lead to
the golf course by creating a road block. They set up barricades and sand bags around their land,
as well as placing barbed wire through the trees. Since there was no Warrior Society in
Kanehsatake itself, volunteer warriors were recruited from two other Mohawk reserves, Kahnawake
and Akwesasne to staff the roadblock. (Swan , 2010) It was a stand of unity to protect the small
piece of land they had managed to hold on to for their future generations. The Mohawk were asking
for respect, and to recognize their rights and independence over their ancestral land. It wasn t just
about the land though but about protecting a history and preserving a future. One recollection
captures this;

Essay on The Feminine Ideal in The Bell Jar
Throughout The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath explores a number of themes, particularly regarding the
gender roles, and subsequently, the mental health care system for women. Her 19 year old
protagonist, Esther Greenwood, is the vessel through which Plath poses many probing questions
about these topics to the reader. In the 1950s when the novel was set, women were held to a high
standard: to be attractive but pure, intelligent but submissive, and to generally accept the notion of
bettering oneself only in order to make life more comfortable for the significant male in her life.
Esther not only deals with the typical problems faced by women in her time, but she has to
experience those things through the lens of mental illness though it is up for... Show more content

remains stuck in a traditional mindset. She turns on Doreen after she witnesses what she
perceives as Doreen s whorish, sloppy behavior in the incident with Lenny, where in which
Doreen had drunk herself sick and acted promiscuously with a man she had met on the street
just a few hours before. Esther even states that [d]eep down, I would be loyal to Betsey and her
innocent friends. It was Betsey I resembled at heart (22). Earlier in the novel, Doreen and Esther
had made fun of Betsey s wholesome, goody goody personality, calling her Pollyanna Cowgirl

naturally compelled to stay true to the clean, innocent lifestyle preferred for women in the 1950s.
Esther s judgmental attitude is not just reserved for her peers. She also makes decisions about
the adults she encounters including her superiors and mentors based upon their physical
attractiveness. When Esther first brings up Jay Cee, her boss at the magazine, she describes her
as plug ugly (6), and then goes on to describe her accomplishments as if they were much less
significant than they really were. Simply because she was unattractive by Esther s standards, her
value as a person was diminished. Esther says, Jay Cee wanted to teach me something, all the old

Hmo Influence On Health Care
Running head: INFLUENCE OF HMO S
HMO s
University of Phoenix
Abstract
The term Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) was developed in 1970 as part of the Nixon
Administration to promote the growth of prepaid plans as a way to improve the nation s health
system. The Health Maintenance Organization has an appearance on the outside of being very
appealing to those with little money to spend on insurance because it has a very low premium cost,
but the truth be known that sometimes cheaper is not always better. In this paper I will discuss how
HMO s have influenced current healthcare systems.
Influence of HMO s
HMO stands for Health Maintenance Organization and was designed by Congress to eliminate
individual health insurance. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was a great thing and to be honest the fees were only 25 more dollars than what I am paying
for a HMO now. I became ill and was rushed to one of the best hospitals in the U.S. Tests were run
and because I had a PPO there were no questions as to who my primary care doctor was. There
were no questions as to what my insurance would pay for on the expensive tests. Now back home
in the North I currently have an HMO which as I stated is only a few dollars cheaper than my
PPO. I recently broke my back and was rushed to the local hospital because of the emergency
situation. While in the E.R. the doctors had to notify my primary doctor and get permission
from the insurance company to run tests and for me to even be allowed to stay in that hospitals
E.R. My primary care doctor was over an hour away in another state. I was cleared to go to
another bigger hospital for emergency surgery but it took a lot of time to get the clearance. I
currently am suffering through bills because through an HMO it is a courtesy for any hospital to
call any insurance. If I still had PPO I would not have been questioned as to cost and the hospital
would have been paid because I could through a PPO go to any hospital without permission. In
summary, the time has come for Congress to make decisions regarding appropriate health care and
to understand that at times cheaper is not always better.

Analysis Of The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee
Growth and Acceptance The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee was done wonderfully
and quite entertaining. While a musical about a spelling bee does not sound like the most
exciting thing to watch, the performances by each actor provided a great atmosphere for the
production. Going into the play, I was expecting it to be a kid s show, which kids would enjoy
the musical but may not quite get all of the jokes. The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee was
more aimed at adults. Every adult that was watching the play, myself included, was rolling out
of their seats. The play managed to be engaging and funny throughout the entire play. Within the
play, each actor has a different background story. Each actor in the play, plays a big role and
stood out in their own specific way. Also, this specific play differs from the other plays we have
seen but it has few similarities. Beginning, the 25TH Annual Putnam Spelling Bee play overall is
a musical comedy. The play was more fast paced, more laughing was involved and much more
singing. Which led to the play in particular being quite more engaging than others. The production
in this play differed from the other plays we ve seen. The audience interaction was the best part of
the production. One difference to me is the play involved four people from the audience to
participate as actors in the play. Not knowing exactly what their purpose is in the play, just
generously volunteering as a spelling bee contestant. Another aspect that differed

Banham Los Angeles Reading Response
In Los Angeles: The Architecture for Four E cologies by Reyner Banham discusses the idea that
Los Angeles, as one of the world s major cities, not only is unique compared to other metropolises,
but that its architecture is derived from four different settings, each playing off each other. The four
ecologies are the flatlands, beach cities, freeways, and foothills, which Los
Angeles encapsulates within its boundaries.
Banham, in this book, aims to tackle all architecture within LA, ranging from hamburger bars to
freeway structures , and how it came to be. Most of LA s buildings are the first and only structures
on their parcels of land , allowing for a variety of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each of these different environments allow architecture to take on its own form, addressing each
place but at the same time alluding to it s neighboring setting. Since Los Angeles was not as dense
as other cities during its creation,
Banham argues that more adaptations were made for motor transport, with architecture involving it.
Los Angeles, as a city sprawl, owes its form to the earlier modes of transport and property lines.
Originally transport began with the Camino Real and then the train. From these two modes of
transport, it was the train that had the most influence on how Los Angeles was master planned. In
its early stages, it had train lines coming from the pueblo to San Fernando,
San Bernardino, Anaheim, Wilmington, and Santa Monica. It was not until later on that the
freeways duplicated these movements, allowing for widespread construction all connected via the
automobile.
Lastly, Banham states that LA architecture is not about integrated design, but rather that
every part is conceived in separated isolation and of symbolic assemblage . Buildings

a) Very slow goodwill amortization
b) Stretched out life for hit tapes
c) Nonrecurring items of initial franchise fees, area development fees and sales to new franchises.

We do not agree with BV s practice of recognizing the revenue upon shipping the supplies because
without acceptance of supplies by stores, it does not satisfy the requirement of completing all
activities that lead to completion of the critical event.
4. We agree that BV ran out of cash. The net working capital was $10384M and Accounts Payable
tripled. We also agree with the double counting and mismatch in financial statements.
A3
Part 1 Concerns that have been addressed
1 b. The hit tapes are now being amortized over a much shorter period В– The costs of non base
stock videocassettes (generally greater than four copies per title for each store i.e. hits ) are
amortized on an accelerated basis over three months to an estimated $4 salvage value.
2. Acquisitions treated as pooling В– All acquisitions were accounted for under the purchase
method and accordingly the operating results of the acquired businesses are included in the
consolidated results of operations of the company since their respective date of acquisition.
3. Critical event for sale of supplies to stores В– BV is using a rental library approach for supplies
for the new stores. Revenue sharing allows BV to purchase videocassettes at a lower product cost
than traditional buying arrangements.
Part 2 Concerns that remain
1 a. The goodwill continues to be amortized over a period of 40 years.

  • 2. Designing An Original Toy For Children Aged Eight And Under Introduction As a part of our final project for GEEN 1400 Engineering Projects, we had to design an original toy for children aged eight and under. Each group has to come up with a new toy which has not yet existed. The toy requires the implementation of engineering skills in its manufacturing and design process. Some of those competence are obtained from in class workshops or personal experience, though students are also allowed to take workshops outside of class, in the ITLL, or Idea Forge. Several of the skills most groups require are: laser cutting, CAD, electronics, 3D printing, etc. Not everyone in the group possesses skills for all aspects of the project. Students divide among themselves and each member takes over a part of the project, however, team members still communicate with each other in completing their tasks. Later, they piece in their parts and collaborate to figure out remaining tasks and possible improvements to the project. The deadline for this project is the Design Expo where students present their project to judges visiting from local companies. Our section s theme of the final project is toys, particularly for those aged eight and under. Therefore, we wanted to construct a toy which is fun, yet suitable for children within that age group. We decided to design an LED maze for our final project. It primarily consist of a hockey themed maze with several LED beams as barriers. A mini air hockey puck is part of the toy and the user utilizes it to glide ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Pros And Cons Of The Solow Paradox lt;a href= quot;http://www.geocities.com/vaksam/ quot; gt;Sam Vaknin s Psychology, Philosophy, Economics and Foreign Affairs Web Sites The PRODUCTIVE HARDWARE The world is debating the Solow Paradox. Named after the Nobel laureate in economics, it was stated by him thus: quot; You can see the computer age everywhere these days, except in the productivity statistics quot;. The venerable economic magazine, quot; The Economist quot; in its issue dated July 24th, quotes the no less venerable Professor Robert Gordon ( quot;one of America s leading authorities on productivity quot;) p.20: quot;...the productivity performance of the manufacturing sector of the United States economy since 1995 has been abysmal rather than admirable. Not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This has been duly detected by Robert Gordon in his quot;Has the New Economy rendered the productivity slowdown obsolete? quot;. But for this increased productivity to trickle down to the rest of the economy a few conditions have to be met. The transition from old technologies to a new one (the computer renders many a technology obsolete) must not involve too much quot;creative destruction quot;. The costs of getting rid of old hardware, software, of altering management techniques or adopting new ones, of shedding redundant manpower, of searching for new employees to replace the unqualified or unqualifiable, of installing new hardware, software and of training new people in all levels of the corporation are enormous. They must never exceed the added benefits of the newly introduced technology in the long run. Hence the crux of the debate. Is IT more expensive to introduce, run and maintain than the technologies that it so confidently aims to replace? Will new technologies be spun off the core IT in a pace sufficient to compensate for the disappearance of old ones? As the technology mature, will it overcome its childhood maladies (lack of operational reliability, bad design, non specificity, immaturity of the first ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Causes And Risks Of Red Meat Risks in Red Meats Red meat is consumed in mass amounts all over the world. However, there are risks involved in consuming so much red meat. Past research has tied red meat to increased risks of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, as well as mad cow disease. Red meat intake also has an increased risk of mortality and detrimental effects on the environment. What is put into the meat when it is processed adds to these risks. There are some benefits to eating red meat such as getting essential vitamins and minerals like B 12 and iron. It also gives people protein and helps make red blood cells. Too much red meat intake negatively affects people s health, causes many problems, and creates increased risks for diseases and certain cancers. There are many risks when people eat high levels of red meat. A study suggests that the link between consumption of red meat and heart disease may stem from gut microbes breaking down carnitine, a compound found in red meat. These microbes help break down food, in the process forming a variety of small compounds. One of these compounds is trimethylamine, which can be metabolized to form trimethylamine N oxide (TMAO). TMAO has been associated with atherosclerosis, a disease in which fat builds up in the arteries. A team led by Dr. Stanley L. Hazen and Robert A. Koeth asked people to consume beef and a carnitine supplement, regular meat eaters produced more TMAO than vegans or vegetarians (Torgan 2013). When participants took antibiotics to suppress gut microbes, they produced less TMAO after eating carnitine (Torgan 2013). This study suggests that gut microbes are involved in the production of TMAO from carnitine putting people more at risk for heart disease and cardiac events like heart attacks, strokes, and death as well as atherosclerosis. These health issues lead to cardiovascular risk and disease. Red meat consumption is associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes. A study found that three extra servings of red meat every week increases the risk of developing diabetes by 50 percent (qtd. by Scutti, 2013). With increased intake of red meat there is a higher risk for people to get type 2 diabetes. Reducing red meat consumption by 0.5 servings per day had a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Plato s Ideal City The Ideal City In Plato s book Republic he describes what he thinks would be an ideal city, for this city to be ideal it would have to be just. In his just city there are three classes of people; gold, silver, and bronze/iron; known as the National Division of Labor. The guardians of the city are placed in the gold category, the auxiliaries in the silver, and the farmers and craftsmen are in the bronze/iron category. Plato argues that the National Division of Labor reflects the requirements of nature and produces a harmonious whole. Wisdom, courage, moderation, and justice are the four virtues that this ideal city must have to be just. The guardians, also known as philosopher kings, being in the gold class of the city, are wise,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The city wouldn t be able to exist without the bronze/iron category; the farmers and craftsmen grow all the food and make every product that is needed. If I had to choose which category I would like to be in I would choose the bronze/iron category. I wouldn t prefer to be in the gold or silver category because I wouldn t want my life completely controlled and not be able to have any privacy. Having my life all about the rest of the city and having my life planned out isn t something that I would enjoy, I would want to make my own decisions and not having them made for me. Sure you could say that that is selfish and unjust but that is what would truly make me happy. Plato says that to truly be happy that you have to flourish and thrive as opposed having pleasure. I think that if I was in the bronze/iron class that I would flourish and thrive because in that class I have more opportunities to succeed in different areas of life. In the bronze /iron class you are able to live your own life, the life you want to live instead of being told what to do and how to live every day. In this ideal and just city, everyone: the guardians, auxiliaries, and farmers and craftsmen, have to do their own task, otherwise it wouldn t be just. The people in these three classes all have to flourish and thrive in whichever class they are in. The guardians can t do the job of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. A Narrative Essay About Religion David panhandled on the street for enough money to send his real family to New York for Christmas. It was a long flight but his two kids didn t give a care. As soon as they saw their dad, they started barraging him with questions. They were always interested in maths because of their father s occupation. The eldest son started first, Why did we ditch the fifth axiom? Why did Tupper make an equation and not ware? How do you win a guessing game? Whats a hyperbolic sport? Why is 82,000 extraordinary? When is Cheryl s birthday? How do you make a klein bottle? Have you ever hunted for the elusive fourth klein bottle? What s your favorite number? Do numbers have free will? At the exact same time, the younger son was firing, Are you a platonist, nominalist, or fictionalist? Is there an infinitesimal Monad? How many chess games are possible? What s the world s new biggest prime number? How did they find it? What s the mathematics of terrorism and crime? Are you really sick? Are dice fair? What s a super bottle? Was my vote counted with homomorphic encryption? What happens if you stand inside a spherical mirror? The two had been away from him for too long and had built quite an extensive list of valid questions that David felt was his fatherly responsibility to answer. He stood there with his hands in their hair and a very homely smile upon his face. He then started trying to comprehend what he was just asked. Three questions in particular had stunned him. That is not even close in my experience. People often thing that because we follow a faith that we will overlook things and let things go. I had a time when I was working with young people in a competition to get scholarships within the church. The competition is very hard and very physical. Being reasonable help me keep my cool when my superiors would walk into my practices and ask me to do things that were not safe or physically impossible for the kids that I had. I knew that I could ask these kids to do that. I was not going to compromise their health because they wanted to win a competition. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Test the connection to the FPV goggles and talk through the frequency band considerations for a VTX system inside for P1, then head out to the flight field to start flying FPV in P2, C1 and the DP. When the batteries are done, come back inside for flight simulator practice in C2. If your batteries gave out before everyone had a chance to make it through all the flight activities, head out for a second, or third, day. How is the VTX frequency adjusted? Then, head out to the flight field for a blade number experiment in P1. Keep building FPV skills in C1 and the DP. When the batteries are done, come back inside for flight simulator practice in C2. If your batteries gave out before everyone had a chance to make it through all the flight activities, head out for a second, or third, day. How does Newton s Third Law explain how airfoils create lift? (When the air pushes down on the wings of a plane wing, the direction of the air and the shape of the foil sends the air up and over the leading edge and then downward as it passes over the wing. This push down on the wing is countered with an equal upward thrust, creating lift.) What is the angle of attack? (How steeply the wing is tilted toward the incoming air.) Why is the pitch of the propeller different in the middle than the outer edge? (Velocity and pitch both affect lift. Since the outer tip is going quite fast relative to the air, it does not need a steep pitch in order to generate a good amount of lift. The parts nearer the center are not moving as quickly relative to the air, so they need a steeper pitch in order to generate a comparable amount of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Explosive Traces and Forensic Analysis Explosives are used for a variety of applications from military operations to mining. However, these materials can also be used in criminal investigations such as terrorists who threaten harm or cause death and destruction. Explosives can be categorised into two main forms: high explosives and low explosives. High explosives are explosive materials that detonate. This means that the explosive shock passes through the material at a speed, faster than the speed of sound. High explosives generally detonate with an explosive velocity ranging from 3 to 9 km/s. Low explosive are compounds where the rate of decomposition proceeds through the material at a speed less than the speed of sound. The decomposition is spread by a flame. This is known as deflagration. Under normal conditions, low explosives undergo deflagration at rates varying from a few centimetres per second to roughly 400 metre per second. It is possible for low explosives to deflagrate extremely quickly producing an effect which is similar to detonation of high explosives. This usually occurs when ignited in a confined space and can happen due to high pressure or high temperatures. The detection and/or identification of trace amounts of explosives is an important aspect of forensic investigations. Some methods of detection can also identify the explosives, some cannot for example the use of canine detection, and the dog can smell the explosive but cannot say what it is. It states that with the right amount of work any US citizen can obtain success in their lives. This idea was popularized around 1930 with James Truslow Adam s book The Epic of America bringing about the idea that there is opportunity for everyone in America if they can work hard enough.3 This idea of the American dream however began much earlier than the 20th century. Rather it began in the west in the 1800s as US citizens gained the ability to cross the frontier and begin completely new lives, whether those lives became advantageous or not. According to the American Dream the western settler s level of work, not race or gender, would determine whether or not he or she became successful. However this was not the case. The American Dream of the 19th century is disparate from the one known today. Unlike Adam s American Dream of the 1930s, this western American Dream was heavily skewed towards white male, US citizen obtainment. This was because the main drive of the western frontier was for white male US citizens to profit from the newly obtained land and keep it for themselves thus fulfilling their new American Dream. In the mid19th century, economic opportunities existed in the Western Frontier of America, allowing people to go and accomplish their dreams if they had the motivation, but those opportunities were prohibitive for women, nonwhites, or non US ... Teachers and parents can make children develop growth mindset by praising their strategies and persistence, by giving them stories that emphasize on effort and the Importance of learning, and teaching the students that a brain is a learning tool or machine (Gupta, et al., 2012). The society is currently worshipping talent and individuals assume that having the ability or superior intelligence with confidence is one way of succeeding. Overemphasis on talent or intelligence leaves students prone to failure, afraid of challenges and they are not ready to accept their shortcomings (Taylor, et al., 2014). Ward, analyzes the question, are we naturally good? by discovering the answer through scientific experiments. He explains how scientists used two mechanisms: intuition and reflection, to boil the complexities of basic human nature into a simple question: do we cooperate when we overcome our intuitive selfishness with rational self control, or do we act selfishly when we override our intuitive cooperative impulses with rational self interest? The difference between intuition and reflection is: intuitive process operates quickly, whereas reflective process operates slowly. Scientists conducted two experimental paradigms (the prisoner s dilemma and a public goods game ) where participants had to make group based financial decisions requiring them to choose between acting selfishly to maximize individual benefits or cooperatively maximizing group s benefits. The results were that more intuitive decisions were made; associated with high levels of cooperation, than reflective. These results suggest that our first impulse is to cooperate that Augustine and Hobbes were wrong, and that we are fundamentally good creatures after all. Later, another experiment was conducted. While in the E.R. the doctors had to notify my primary doctor and get permission from the insurance company to run tests and for me to even be allowed to stay in that hospitals E.R. My primary care doctor was over an hour away in another state. I was cleared to go to another bigger hospital for emergency surgery but it took a lot of time to get the clearance. I currently am suffering through bills because through an HMO it is a courtesy for any hospital to call any insurance. If I still had PPO I would not have been questioned as to cost and the hospital would have been paid because I could through a PPO go to any hospital without permission. In summary, the time has come for Congress to make decisions regarding appropriate health care and to understand that at times cheaper is not always better. Bibliography Safran, D. W. ... • 51. Analysis Of The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee Growth and Acceptance The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee was done wonderfully and quite entertaining. While a musical about a spelling bee does not sound like the most exciting thing to watch, the performances by each actor provided a great atmosphere for the production. Going into the play, I was expecting it to be a kid s show, which kids would enjoy the musical but may not quite get all of the jokes. The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee was more aimed at adults. Every adult that was watching the play, myself included, was rolling out of their seats. The play managed to be engaging and funny throughout the entire play. Within the play, each actor has a different background story. Each actor in the play, plays a big role and stood out in their own specific way. Also, this specific play differs from the other plays we have seen but it has few similarities. Beginning, the 25TH Annual Putnam Spelling Bee play overall is a musical comedy. The play was more fast paced, more laughing was involved and much more singing. Which led to the play in particular being quite more engaging than others. The production in this play differed from the other plays we ve seen. The audience interaction was the best part of the production. One difference to me is the play involved four people from the audience to participate as actors in the play. Not knowing exactly what their purpose is in the play, just generously volunteering as a spelling bee contestant. Another aspect that differed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Banham Los Angeles Essay Andrew Aguirre Professor Di Palma Arch 314 14 September 2016 Banham Los Angeles Reading Response In Los Angeles: The Architecture for Four E cologies by Reyner Banham discusses the idea that Los Angeles, as one of the world s major cities, not only is unique compared to other metropolises, but that its architecture is derived from four different settings, each playing off each other. The four ecologies are the flatlands, beach cities, freeways, and foothills, which Los Angeles encapsulates within its boundaries. Banham, in this book, aims to tackle all architecture within LA, ranging from hamburger bars to freeway structures , and how it came to be. Most of LA s buildings are the first and only structures on their parcels of land , allowing for a variety of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each of these different environments allow architecture to take on its own form, addressing each place but at the same time alluding to it s neighboring setting. Since Los Angeles was not as dense as other cities during its creation, Banham argues that more adaptations were made for motor transport, with architecture involving it. Los Angeles, as a city sprawl, owes its form to the earlier modes of transport and property lines. Originally transport began with the Camino Real and then the train. From these two modes of transport, it was the train that had the most influence on how Los Angeles was master planned. In its early stages, it had train lines coming from the pueblo to San Fernando, San Bernardino, Anaheim, Wilmington, and Santa Monica. It was not until later on that the freeways duplicated these movements, allowing for widespread construction all connected via the automobile. Lastly, Banham states that LA architecture is not about integrated design, but rather that every part is conceived in separated isolation and of symbolic assemblage . Buildings ... • 54. Blockbuster Essay Criticisms of Blockbuster by Seidler 1. The bulk of 1988 per share earnings were due to a) Very slow goodwill amortization b) Stretched out life for hit tapes c) Nonrecurring items of initial franchise fees, area development fees and sales to new franchises. 2. Steeper growth curve resulting from acquisitions that were treated as pooling 3. Inflation of sales in the fourth quarter. Revenues are recognized when products are shipped with no indication that the stores purchasing were actually open for business. 4. Running out of cash Our position 1. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We do not agree with BV s practice of recognizing the revenue upon shipping the supplies because without acceptance of supplies by stores, it does not satisfy the requirement of completing all activities that lead to completion of the critical event. 4. We agree that BV ran out of cash. The net working capital was $10384M and Accounts Payable tripled. We also agree with the double counting and mismatch in financial statements. A3 Part 1 Concerns that have been addressed 1 b. The hit tapes are now being amortized over a much shorter period В– The costs of non base stock videocassettes (generally greater than four copies per title for each store i.e. hits ) are amortized on an accelerated basis over three months to an estimated $4 salvage value. 2. Acquisitions treated as pooling В– All acquisitions were accounted for under the purchase method and accordingly the operating results of the acquired businesses are included in the consolidated results of operations of the company since their respective date of acquisition. 3. Critical event for sale of supplies to stores В– BV is using a rental library approach for supplies for the new stores. Revenue sharing allows BV to purchase videocassettes at a lower product cost than traditional buying arrangements. Part 2 Concerns that remain 1 a. The goodwill continues to be amortized over a period of 40 years. 1 c The nonrecurring items mentioned by Seidler ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
