Analyzing Langston Hughes The Weary Blues

Research Paper on the poem The Weary Blues by Langston Hughes
Langston Hughes published The Weary Blues in 1926 when he was twenty four, and the poem depicts
his life in his own unique perspective as a struggling black man. ( Langston Hughes 2 of 3). In the
poem Hughes creates a speaker who is spending a night out and listens to a black man singing the
blues. In one stanza, he illustrates a scene in which the African American singer expresses pride in his
heritage, strength, soul, and the depth to which his emotions and spirituality reach. The imagery in the
poem paints a very gloomy and melancholy atmosphere. Even rhyme plays an important role because
it gave consistency and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The use of imagery is very strong throughout this poem. Words like mellow, pale, drowsy,
melancholy, and dull, suggest to the reader that the atmosphere surrounding the speaker is dark and
gloomy. Even lights in the street is not sufficient to brighten the surroundings, being that the only
source of light stated is the pale dull pallor of an old gas light. The haziness of this light with darkness
of the night, evokes a sense of sluggishness in the atmosphere. The singer speaks of his struggles and
opinions, and it is reflected in the third stanza: With his ebony hands on each ivory key (Hughes line
9). In the singer s era, the impression of black and white coming together to form harmony would be
unlikely, but he has reached this goal by creating the melodic tune that comes out of the piano. Since
he was in a time where class distinctions with African Americans were quite rigid, and he was a
busboy, struggling with his emotions, his past incidents inspired and motivated him ( Langston
Hughes 1 of 3). Hence, with deep imagery during the course of the poem, Hughes epitomizes his
struggles and differences within his society by comparing it with a similar man s struggling situation
of life using strong imagery. It is apparent that the woe conveyed through his writing shows his
struggles, and displeased attitude towards society and

Analysis Of Tipping The Velvet By Sarah Waters
Throughout time there has always been a great interest in transvestism perhaps this is due to it being it
able to transcend the normative boundaries of gender expression. This essay will focus on the act of
cross dressing and transvestism, as this still remains as a 21st century phenomena with often
transgressed representations. Specifically looking at this representation in Tipping the Velvet by Sarah
Waters a Neo Victorian fiction novel, Analysing how the performance and act of a male impersonation
is created represented and how the act is received.
Neo Victorian literature is most commonly seen as contemporary fiction or culture, which is usually
set between 1837 and 1901 during the Victorian era, or it is highly influenced by this ... Show more

Women had one role within society, which was to marry and take care of their husbands then,
eventually tend to the needs their children. However this changes when Nancy visits the music hall
she is instantly attracted to one of the performers; a male impersonator called Kitty Butler. After
forming a love affair with Kitty, Nancy accompanies Kitty to London initially to assist her with her
costume changes. However Nancy soon has a role within the act and forms a career. Nan and Kitty s
double act becomes popular amongst audiences. On one evening Nancy encounters Kitty and their
manager, in bed together. As a result Nancy leaves her safe surroundings with only a small amount of
money and some of the outfits that they had worn when performing her act. She soon discovers that
London is a not a safe place for an unaccompanied female I felt suddenly quite sick with

of this she uses the male clothing she has at her disposal as form of masquerade that for a short time
allows her to walk without trepidation. However this masquerade only falls victim to Victorian men
who believe she is a young male and wish to seek sexual services. Seeing that she has the chance to
make money. Nancy becomes a male prostitute. It is during this time that Diana Leathery approaches

Odysseus Disguise In O Brother Where Art Thou
In the film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, the moment when Everett disguises himself as an elderly
musician to see his wife parallels the moment in The Odyssey when Odysseus disguises himself as a
beggar before seeing his wife whom he has been distanced from for far too long. As people gather in
the banquet kitchen hall, Everett, Pete, and Delmar walk up onto the stage disguised as old men with
long beards, convincing the past act that they are up next. This is crazy. No one s ever gonna believe
we re a real band. Everett insists that his plan will work, saying, I just gotta get close enough to talk to
her. Likewise, Odysseus is in disguise when meeting face to face with Penelope for the first time in
over twenty years. [Pallas Athena] has

Ideological Bias Reflected in American Crime Statistics
As Nils Christie argued, crime is a property of the state (2004). As such, it can be defined by the same
systems of ideals which influence the state. Crime statistics, which refer to a category of human acts
that society view as deviant, can consequently be argued to be without objectivity (Dorling and
Simpson, 1999). The statistics they provide are thus arguably not exact. To a certain extent one could
infer they are reflections of society, of those who present the data and most importantly of those who
accumulate it. The facts themselves become a socially constructed foundation for social knowledge,
which inevitably become subjective. This essay aims to discuss how ideological biases within the

These particular areas tend to be inner city, with a high population of ethnic minorities, poverty and
crime (Lynn and Elliot, 2000) . Thus not only does the sample and the data it acquires become less
representative of the population as a whole, it in turn over represents particular groups of people, and
the types of crimes committed; which in turn gives across bias ideologies of criminal groups, criminal
areas and the level of crime. As exemplified by Tony Blair who stated gun crime was a problem within
the black community (Wintour and Dodd, 2007), these crime statics can give across an ideological
bias of the relationship between a particular crime and a particular group. Arguably, higher levels of
police are distributed in these areas which in turn creates a cyclical effect whereby ideological biases
fuels higher levels of policing, which in turn increases levels of offending in statistics, as described by
Sharp and Budd (2005), which consequently fuels the ideological biases as demonstrated by Tony
Blair.
Ideological bias can also under represent particular groups, giving a bias towards their lack of
deviance. This was evident in Britain during the late 20th century where Black people were seen as
deviant and Asians were seen as law abiding victims. Their

Eliminating the Price Effect of an Index Automatically...
By the attempt to eliminate the price effect from an index fund, the fundamental index managers
change the set up of the index in such a way that it automatically changes the basic characteristics of
the index. As shown in exhibit 10 of the Research Affiliate case, fundamental indices usually not only
deal with a higher turnover ratio but also with a higher net expense ratio, for implementing the
fundamental strategy in reality seems to go hand in hand with higher costs.
Looking at commonly used multiples in exhibit 11, we see no surprises. While the P/E ratio for the
RAFI index is only slightly smaller compared to the Russell 1000 index, the Price to Book/Cash
Flow/Sales ratio is fundamentally lower in all categories for the RAFI index. More interesting is the
fact that the RAFI index is composed of companies with an on average lower market capitalization as
well as a higher leverage ratio, which might be a hint that the RAFI is also taking on more risk to
produce the excess returns. Even though Research Affiliates uses several methods to eliminate a bias
towards a specific sector/type of company, research shows that fundamental indices are clearly more
exposed to value and small stocks, which is further illustrated in exhibits 12 14.
Looking at exhibits 11 13 we directly observe RAFI s strong exposure towards financial institutions.
Citigroup and Bank of America alone account for roughly 15% of the index while Citigroup is not
even found within the 10 largest

Furtebrate Stress Response
Stress can be broadly defined as any stimulus that disrupts homeostasis, with the stress response
referring to physiological and behavioral reactions to such a stimulus (Selye, 1950).In vertebrates the
stress response is an evolutionary conservative process mediated by the HPA axis that allows
organisms to respond rapidly to unpredictable changes in their environment. It is initiated when higher
brain centers perceive endogenous or exogenous noxious stimuli that threaten homeostasis and
culminates in the release of glucocorticoids from the adrenal cortex. Elevated levels of circulating
glucocorticoids exert a variety of catabolic, antireproductive, anti growth, and immunosuppressive
effects that mobilize and repartition under detailed organisms ... Show more content on

Researchers tend to focus more intensely on perturbations resulting from aversive events. (Novak et al
2013). A stress response can be describe physiologically as a result of discovery of metabolic,
immunological and neuroendocrine mechanisms. Several hormones including ACTH, glucorticoid,
catecholamines, and prolactin are involved in a stress response. Adrenal glands are essential to
hormonal stress responses because they are involved both hypothalamic pituitary adrenocortical axis
and the symphatho adreno medullary system. The most salient physiological responses to stress
include activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) as well as the hypothalamic pituitary
adrenal (HPA) axis. Accu rate measurement of the catecholamines (i.e., epinephrine and
norepinephrine) released as a result of SNS activation is dif ficult because these substances are only
available for transient periods of time (Reeder and Kramer, 2005). Thus, evaluation of the HPA axis,
most commonly by measurement of its end prod uct glucocorticoids, has traditionally been the
primary means to make inferences about the stress response in animals. (Otovic Hutchinson

Abuse Of Language In Animal Farm, By George Orwell
The abuse of language (propaganda) is instrumental to the abuse of power. This is portrayed
throughout the book Animal Farm by George Orwell. For example, Squealer and Napoleon are two
characters that the author uses to portray the abuse of power. Squealer and Napoleon had misused their
powers, but justified their action through the use of propaganda. Thus, through the use of propaganda,
Squealer and Napoleon were able to manipulate the other animals way of thinking. Not only is
propaganda used in books, magazines, and articles, but are also used by leaders, politicians, and
companies to influence the public, attract attention, and to gain powers. Therefore, the use of
propaganda is one of the main tools that is used to manipulate others and a way to justify one s wrong
behavior, such as the abuse of power. Squealer, the appointed speaker among the pigs, uses
propaganda as a way to gain power. The animals describe Squealer as a brilliant talker... he could turn
black into white (16). He was to make sure the animals believe that Napoleon is a righteous leader,
even though in reality he is not. An example of how Squealer uses propaganda to abuse his power is
when he made excuses for the animal s reduced rations. He had no difficulty in proving to the other
animals that they were not in reality short of food...it had been found necessary to make a
readjustment of rations...in comparison with the days of Jones, the improvement was enormous (112

Essay on Liberal Media Bias in the United States
People rely on journalist to report factual news and to make political points in helping the American
citizen in making their decision when it comes time to vote. Since American s do not have time to
research every side to all the stories that have been published, they count on the media to portray both
sides. However, you cannot believe everything that the media reports. If you were to pay attention to
the reports given by journalists, you will find that they report on the stories that they feel they want to
get out. And when it comes to politics, they have a way of leaning more towards a democratic view.
The American media has a way of portraying the news in a bias way, which has been studied,
researched, and reported to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many journalists are predominately liberal and are considered more liberal that the general public.
They have a way of manipulating news to help Democrats and the liberal agenda. Strong
conservatives and Republicans are more likely to distrust the media news (Lee Tien Tsung). Although
the media deny being bias, there are ways to prove that it does exist without the proof of studies and
research. When journalist only report from one side of the story and use phrases from witnesses or
experts from the one side that they are reporting on, media bias is presented. If the journalist fails to
report on the conservative side of the story, or the conservative part is either barely mentioned or
comes at the end of the story instead of mentioning it during the liberal view, this is another example.
Another way to identify this type of reporting would be looking for the journalist to put a spin on the
story. This happens when journalist make one side of the story more appealing than the other. (Baker)
Since the general public is able to spot bias in the media, they no longer trust the news. Back in 2001,
when four major networks starting running evening news broadcasting, the ratings had dropped
significantly (Alterman 7). Other means of bias stories in the media have been proven with the help of
studies, research, and by taking polls and surveying the general public. Surveys can be insightful to
see how the public views things. Many journalists take a

Gut Microbiota Research Paper
Molecular insights into gastric sleeve surgery: A review on gut microbiota and obesity 1. Introduction
Overweight and obesity are defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an abnormal or
excessive accumulation of body fat that damages the health of the individual. Nowadays, obesity is
becoming widespread around the world, with complications such as diabetes and an increased risk of
heart disease. Currently, it has been shown that in addition to genetic factors, the incidence of obesity
is affected by environmental factors such as gut microbiota interactions, and diet through changes in
gut microbiota, intestinal permeability and LPS levels. The gut microbiota consists of bacteria, fungi,
viruses and protozoans, often belonging to the phyla of Frimicutes, Bacteroides, Actinobacteria, and
Protebacteria (3). Although, more than a thousand different bacteria are found in the human intestine,
only 150 to 170 species are common between different individuals, so microbiotas are specific for
each individual (4). Imbalance in the symbiosis of digestive tract microbiotas (dysbiosis) can occur in
a variety of ways, including dietary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

want to minimize the risk of weight loss surgery, due to excessive obesity (11). Effective factors in
weight loss in sleeve gastrectomy are food restrictions, malabsorption, gastric emptying, rapid gastric
emptying, increased appetite regulating hormones (PYY, GIP, GLP1, etc.), decreased hunger hormone
(ghrelin) and increased bile acids. Although, the size of the stomach is reduced in this type of surgery,
but its function stays normal. On the other hand, it reduces hunger due to extra gastric volume,
containing cells producing ghrelin hormone (provoking hunger and causing starvation)

Analysis Of The Kite Runner
One major theme that is evident in The Kite Runner is that scars are reminders of life s pain and
regret, and, though you can ease the regret and the scars will fade, neither will completely go away.
We all have regrets and always will, but though it will be a long hard process we can lessen them
through redemption. The majority of The Kite Runner is about the narrator and protagonist, Amir.
Almost all of the characters in The Kite Runner have scars, whether they are physical or emotional.
Baba has scars all down his back from fighting a bear, but he also has emotional scars from not being
able to admit that Hassan was also his son. Hassan is born with a cleft lip, but for his birthday Baba
pays for it to be fixed, which left a small scar above his mouth. Hassan also has emotional scars from
being raped. The reader is probably shown the emotional scars of Amir the most. Amir has emotional
scars because he feels that he killed his mother, and also because his father emotionally neglects him.
In the end of the novel, Amir receives many physical scars from getting beaten up by Assef, when
rescuing Sohrab. Though scars will never go away and are a reminder of the past, not all scars are bad.
The book The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is a story about two brothers who develop both
emotional and physical scars that in the end shape them as individuals. This amazingly written novel
will leave the reader sobbing at times of sorrow, and smiling and laughing at times of joy. This

The Theme Of Power In The Veldt By Ray Bradbury
Julia Sherman
November 10, 2017
English Pd. 6
The Veldt Thematic Essay When considering reasons for a power or control shift in a relationship
between a parent and child, one of the most common reasons considered is the fact that parents are
giving kids too much too soon. As a parent gives these things, literal objects and figurative things, too
soon, they are actually letting the power in their relationship shift and giving the kids more control. In
The Veldt, the author, Ray Bradbury, emphasizes the theme with dialogue and tone. In the short story,
George and Lydia Hadley, and their two children Peter and Wendy, are living in a smart house, where
almost everything gets done for them. The quote, But I thought we that s why we bought this house,
so we wouldn t have to do anything? shows how little they have to do to have everything nice and
keep a good home. The children have grown up not doing anything; they do not even paint their own
pictures. The children do not do their own laundry, make their own beds, or bathe themselves. Their
lives are so simple, and all they spend their days doing is looking, listening, and smelling. The
children enjoy not participating in life, but merely spectating it. Peter and Wendy not only get this
literally, but they also figuratively get the freedom to come and go as they please. Now, they may
enjoy all of these things, but each thing or freedom which Wendy and Peter receive is another piece of
power that the parents once had

Suffering Of The Good Samaritan
Suffering performs a significant function in numerous religions, concerning situations like:
consolation or relief; moral behavior, spiritual development through life difficulties or through self
enforced trials, and final destiny. It is supplemented in the Hebrew Bible by the verses found in the
Book of Isaiah and the Book of Jeremiah. They detail the emotional and physical suffering of a
defeated nation with its vanquished residents compelled into the suffering of expulsion and
confinement in a foreign nation. In the New Testament, suffering is depicted in the life of Jesus, which
recounts the suffering of the crucifixion, and in the Easter story. The suffering connected with
punishment is additionally depicted in the Apocalypse of John where suffering at the setting of the
Last Judgment is portrayed as the just compensation for sin and unlawful activity. Pope John Paul II
wrote On the Christian Meaning of Human Suffering. This article focuses on the idea of redemptive
suffering. The parable of the Good Samaritan belongs to the Gospel of suffering. For it indicates what
the relationship of each of us must be towards our suffering neighbour...This is the meaning of
suffering, which is truly supernatural and at the same time human. It is supernatural because it is
rooted in the Divine mystery of the Redemption of the world...deeply human, because in it the person
discovers himself, his own humanity, his own dignity, his own mission. The following are two reports

The Corruption Of Gold Mining In Suriname
The history of Suriname s independence and their lucrative mountains of gold is complicated and
treacherous. Indigenous Tribes originally inhabited Suriname, and by the late 1650 s the Governor of
Barbados, Lord Willoughby settled a colony called Willoughbyland. Lord Willoughby began
construction on multiple plantations and in slaved thousands of Africans and indigenous people. The
colony was invaded in 1667 by the Dutch who established the official name of the colony as
Suriname. In 1863 as slavery was being abolished, small scale gold mining commenced. As Suriname
gained independence in 1975 with prospects of gold triggering the second gold rush. The beginning of
small scale indigenous miners and foreign large scale mining corruption influenced global
environmental inequality in Suriname. In 2000, Ouboter et al. (2012) stated in his case study that the
Geological and Mining Survey of Suriname (GMD) estimated that the number of small scale gold
miners in Suriname was between 25,000 and 35,000. (873) Gold mining in Suriname is the most
significant source of employment and main export of product in the country, because of this, the
indigenous people mine to provide for their families. These small scale indigenous miners use
mercury to extract gold because it is the cheapest and easiest way to turn the product into profit.

Karl Marx and Marx Weber Essay
Karl Marx and Marx Weber The latter part of the nineteenth century was teeming with evolved social
and economical ideas. These views of the social structure of industrial society came about through the
development of ideals taken from past revolutions such as the Industrial Revolution which steamed

development of a capitalist society was a very favorable goal in the eyes of the bourgeoisie. But it had

Weber was elected to the Soviet where he met Kurt Eisner, its leader. Eisner was a creative and
innovative man who seemed to know what to do when no one else did. Weber considered him an
archetype of the charismatic leader and wrote his theories under his silhouette. Weber s primary works
include The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism.
Weber can be said to agree with Marx concerning the alienation of the individual in Industrial Society.
For Weber this centers around the rationalization of the West due to the spread of bureaucracy. Weber
s belief was that Industrial Societies inevitable trend was to more and more rationalization. Thus he
was certain bureaucracies were the most efficient and most rational known means of exercising
authority over human beings. Offices are ranked in a hierarchical order and their operations are
characterized by impersonal rules also appointments are made according to specialized qualifications.
Therefore bureaucracies were thought to be reliable, precise and stable. Bureaucracies were also based
on legitimate authority, in that it functioned either on the basis of procedures that could be altered or
through a system of rules and regulations. But Weberian bureaucracies faced the problem of control

My Paper On Cultural Identity
My paper was based on the first topic about how someone s life history can tell you about their
cultural identity. The person I interviewed was a second generation 32 year old immigrant from
Mexico. She is a very kind person, with such an adventurous personality. My plan was to ask several
questions about her life, as well as what she has faced. This is so I can learn more from her and her
culture. I asked a couple of questions about her life and practices to figure out how family and changes
helped her adapt to what culture she identifies with growing up. My first heading will consist of her
childhood growing up, the culture she grew up with and how her family plays the important part of her
culture. My second will consist on her adult changes and her identity she has formed. I will then
explain how her experiences have helped shaped her through her life and what she talks about during
the interview as well as any other stories she would like to contribute.
To begin with, she was born in Tijuana, Mexico. She was homeschooled after she finished middle
school because her parents believed it to be better for her to remain home to teach her how they see fit.
Her connection with her parents was not that good, but they still bonded during holidays and cultural
traditions. She identifies with the American culture more than a Mexican culture, despite her mother
being Mexican; she did not live a Mexican lifestyle or celebrated much Mexican holidays growing up.

Japanese Culture And Japanese Food
Japanese cuisine and its development Rice serves with vegetable, and fish are the main traditional

dishes of Japanese traditional meal were simple, but as Japanese cuisine evolved over the years, it has
more different dishes for customers to choose today. My goal in this paper is to discuss the
geographical effect on Japanese cuisine, the relationship between Zen culture and Japanese cuisine
and its development in the world. Geography are the important effect on food choices in Japanese
cuisine. In Japan and the Culture of the Four Seasons : Nature, Literature, and the Arts, Shirane
provided specific places as an example to illustrated that the position determines what chefs would

(Edo and Osaka) became the cultural and economic centers, moving the general urban perspective
from inland basins (Nara and Kyoto) to the coast and the sea, which became an important source of

A Raisin In The Sun Assimilation Essay
Assimilation or the refusal to assimilate was and has been present throughout the United States and
examples of such can be seen in plays like, Los Vendidos and A Raisin In The Sun . Assimilation is
defined by dictionary.com as: the process of adapting or adjusting to the culture of a group or nation.
Lorraine Hansberry was against assimilation and instead wanted to introduce integration, being a part
of the routines and traditions, but maintaining heritage, by writing A Raisin in the Sun , she wanted to
show her stance for the African Americans to take pride in their heritage and to not assimilate to all the
views of white Americans. Los Vendidos tries to portray a similar theme by using satirical humor and
symbolism. Every country faces the issue of assimilating new people into new places, but many think
only immigrants have this issue. However, many who have already migrated into society are deeply
rooted in their heritage have the same issue because they want to hold on to the traditions that give
respect to their ancestors. The line between assimilation and integration is and was a huge debate
especially during the time A Raisin in the Sun was written, 1950s, and as each decade passes ... Show

Essay Psuedopsychology vs the Scientific Method
Humans have inhabited the Earth for thousands of years and it is perceived by many that we are
among the most intellectual species on this planet. Although having lived on this planet for so long,
being able to distinguish fact from fiction has escaped the minds of many. People of today s society
are easily influenced by what is told to them instead of what can be proven. Believing in something
that has no scientific evidence is not only absurd but can be classified simply as ignorance. Many of

everyone to remain the same. Horoscopes and Astrology: A man who made the practice of horoscopes

1600 s was William Lilly. During his time he was seen as a great prophet, and became famous for
predicting The Great Fire of London through one of his hieroglyphic drawings (McCann, 1990). The
Great Fire of London happened on September 2, 1666 and it started out as a small fire in the bakeshop
of Thomas Forger destroying about 430 acres of land including 13,000 house, 89 churches and many
other buildings leaving countless homeless. This fire occurred 14 years after William Lilly predicted
one, and at this time London has been prone to having fires due to its infrastructure. Most of the
houses and other buildings were made of wood and highly flammable, causing something that started
as a house fire to a fire that engulfed a great majority of London. This hasn t been the only great fire
that this city has witnessed. Along with the fire of 1633 and 1676, the fire of 1666 has increased its
caliber of destruction primarily because of the city s construction

Woody Vs Hollywood Research Paper
Whether you are planning to sell your home soon or remain in it for many years, you naturally want it
to have great curb appeal. Siding can be an excellent way to enhance the appearance of your house or
give it a fresh look. If you are considering the installation of siding, you may be wondering whether
you should choose vinyl or wood siding. If so, this comparison of wood siding to vinyl siding may
help you decide.
Vinyl Siding Can Be Damaged More Easily
A misthrown baseball, wind blown debris or even hail can break vinyl siding and leave a hole to mark
its spot. Wood siding can withstand impact damage much better than vinyl. Vinyl siding can also warp
as it contracts in cold weather and expands in the heat of summer. Once it assumes a wavy

Romans were heavily influenced by Etruscan and Greek culture. Economics and Politics The economy
and politics of Greece were extremely complex. Most importantly Greek commercial expansion
through new trade markets around the Mediterranean with the non Greek world made it possible for
more men to purchase land and power. At the same time the concept of a polis (city) and demos
(common people) and the idea of discussion of public choices and possible outcomes with collective
concern were born in the city state. Two of the most well known to us today are Athens and Sparta, but
there were many more. The mountainous terrain as well as a deeply entrenched sense of independence
probably allowed the system to remain more of a loose confederation than a central republic, like that
of Rome. The early Roman republic probably began around the year 509 BCE and lasted for more
than 450 years before the gradual decay of its republican institutions. The Senate, which concentrated
political leadership, had come in place by 300 BCE or so to represent the ruling class of patricians and
wealthier members of the plebs. The typical Roman citizen lived in the country and the bulk of the
Roman economy was based on agriculture and land ownership. But as the empire grew

Processed Food Is Bad For You Summary
Response to Why is Processed Food so Bad for you? Upon reading the ingredient list of my favorite
Ritz crackers, I noticed there were some strange ingredients, such as riboflavin and mononitrate.
These ingredients sound like elements from the periodic table, not ingredients that go in a simple Ritz
cracker. Many consumers don t realize what are the true ingredients that go into many of their favorite
foods. Michael Hobbes is a journalist and an animator that writes for the Huffington Post. In Hobbes
article, Why is Processed Food so Bad for you? , he concentrates on how processed food can be
unhealthy for many consumers. Though Hobbes explains how processed food is unhealthy, and also
the difficulty of finding organic food; Hobbes overlooks the key issue of the high cost of healthy food.
First Hobbes explains processed food is unhealthy. Hobbes explains by using one of his examples, and
another example would be how much fast food restaurant there are and how consumers go out to eat
more than once a week. One of the examples Hobbes uses to explain how preservatives have to go
into almost every food that goes into the market is his marinara sauce. Hobbes describes that if he
were to put his marinara sauce out into the market he would need to add so ... Show more content on

Hobbes does not state that organic food is very costly, and can be hard to find in places where there is
not any gardens or agriculture. Corporations make processed foods cheaper than many of the freshly
grown foods that farmers sell. Kluger states that even though some meats are labeled that they don t
have any nitrates they are still not considered healthy. This is false advertisement and many consumers
believe it is true and buy these more expensive foods. Consumers will buy anything that is considered
a good price and if store bought bread is a better price than making the bread, consumers will go the
cheapest way

Persuasive Essay On Breaking Rules
Kim Harrison say that Breaking rules isn t bad when what you re doing is more important than the rule
itself. In discussion of rebellion, one controversial issue has been showing that everyone s
bewilderment. On the one hand, people argued that it is unsuitable to infringe the rules. On the other
hand, people demonstrate that it is justified to contravene the rules. However, I believe that it is right
to break the rules when it support a cause you believe in, unfairly and understandable. One key reason
why we should break the rules when it supports a cause that you believe in, a cause that is right
because you believe, in your opinion, defying authority may help other people. One clear example of
this is from the text, Hunger games. Katniss breaks several rules to help her people and her family. To
understand why Katniss breaks the rules is because her people live in a oppressed life in a society by
all the specific rules like weapon not allow, hunting not allow, and you can not go in the wood to pay
or sell food. Katniss have to ignore the rules go in the wood, hunt and trade food so her family can
have food to survive. Another strong example is from The Montgomery Bus Boycott, when Rosa
Parks break the rules on the bus, don t give up her seat on the bus because white people in texas being
racist which mean black people have to give up their seat for white people. Rosa park shirk the law
and justify for her people. To better understand in that situation is because when other people life in
danger you believe that you should stand up and speak for them as a hero. There are many people life
get in danger or dead because no one believed themself or wanted to stand up and speak for other
people. This historical document illustrates that we should help other people when we think our
believe is not wrong. Another important reason when is it right to break the rules is when it unfairly.
One significant example is that from the text article title Marriage is a Private Affair. Nnaemeka rebel
against the rules which mean he don t listen to his dad and married someone else in the cosmopolitan
atmosphere of the city not in the Ibo tribe where his dad live. In many countries, all over the world,

Case Study The New Orleans Pelican
Even though the New Orleans Pelicans signed Anthony Davis to 5 year / 145 million dollar extension
this past off season. The Pelicans should strongly consider trading Davis within the next 2 3 seasons
because Davis has missed at least 15 games in each of his first three seasons due to a number of
injuries, which include sprained right shoulder, sprained MCL and a fractured left hand. If Anthony
Davis continues to sustain injuries that force him to exit or miss games he will not be able to lead the
Pelicans to any real team success. Real team success for the Pelicans would be winning 50 55 regular
season games and making it pass the first round. For the Pelicans to achieve this goal they would need
Davis 75 to 80 games without missing big portions of games to attend to an injury. Since the Pelicans
do not have another impact player on their roster that can help them tread water until Davis. ... Show

Psychosocial Stages In Antwone Fisher
The movie, Antwone Fisher, is a biography based off a real person named Antwone Fisher. It follows

Psychosocial Development is a theory that says every individual goes through eight stages throughout
their life as they get older. He states that every person has a crisis in each stage and the outcome of
each stage shapes how one is and how one will be for the rest of their lives. The first stage is trust
versus mistrust which occurs from birth to 1.5 years old. If an infant successfully develops trust, he or
she feels safe and secure. On the other hand, a child who fails to develop trust will feel afraid and that
the world is unpredictable all their life. It is clear that Antwone gained mistrust because he was born in
a prison and probably was not properly cared for. His father was never around him because he died
before he was born. An example of Antwone showing mistrust later in his life is in the beginning of

The People s Insurance Company Of Canada
Name : Dolphine Bisase
Id : 213349311
Assignment: Midterm Assignment, Management 3990
While the intention was that the People s Insurance Company of Canada (PICC) would have an
organic organizational structure, this intention was at least partially offset by the close integration of
the Insurance company with the parent People s Bank. The result was an entity in which the
superficially organic, generally non hierarchical Insurance organization has been overridden by the
highly hierarchical and mechanistic bank organization. The PICC s actual structure has both
mechanistic and organic aspects. With regard to work specialization, it is generally narrow and
mechanistic with the VP for HR, Mary Thorne, fighting an ongoing battle with the Bank on the
grounds that PICC needed staff with specialized skills in the insurance industry. With respect to chain
of command, while the structure of PICC was intended to be open, non hierarchical and organic, it is
clear that it is generally mechanistic in its most important aspects. For example, while there may be an
open office environment in general, the senior team members have private offices. Similarly, while the
the emphasis of PICC is towards self managing teams, many approvals such as new purchases had to
be signed off by multiple layers of the bank s management. Thus, the chain of command is very rigid
in terms of its senior decision makers. In terms of centralization of decision making, it appears that

Commerce Is Creating Wealth For Society
The among the many functions of commerce is creating wealth for society. However, it is questionable
if the firm in Margin Call follows through with its role acting in the interests of society in its bleak
predicament. Once it is revealed that there is a high probability of the firm being devalued beyond
market capitalization, the employees of an unnamed company attempt to formulate a solution to the
imminent crisis. Although there is some dissent from Sam Rogers, Head of Sales and Trading, CEO
Tuld promptly decides to liquidate the firm s toxic assets onto the market. Despite the unanimous
direction the firm moves in, there are various sources of internal tensions between the firm s
employees in that they individually represent differing perspectives within the social context of the
firm. Through the various rationales the executives possess as well as the relationships between the
employees and the firm itself, Margin Call illustrates the conviction that although the role of
commerce is to engender a certain lifestyle for the public, the executives in the firm have warped this
belief into a justification for the extreme measures they lead the firm to take in the name of their profit
and their survival. In the first scene of Margin Call, the social hierarchy of the firm is staunchly
established as Will himself is nonchalant about the layoff because he holds a relatively senior position
in the firm and it s evident that he has survived through other layoffs. In

Theme Of Supernatural Elements In The Fall Of The House Of...
Supernatural elements is something that cannot be explained by the laws of nature. These elements,
such as religious figures and activities, ghosts, witches and anthropomorphized animals have been
used to develop themes throughout literature. These supernatural elements are often used to outline the
conflict within the plot and creates an atmosphere of mystery and suspense throughout the text, which
establishes the gothic. Supernatural components leave us to question what is real and what is our
imagination.
In the text The Fall of the House of Usher there are supernatural events throughout the short story.
From the rapidly decaying house that is quite literally connected to the main character Roderick
Usher, to the ghost of Roderick s twin sister Madeline. House of Usher an appellation which seemed
to include, in the minds of the peasantry who used it, both the family and the family mansion. This
line gives us a hint from the title toward the supernatural link between the physical house collapsing
and the metaphorical fall of the Usher Family. I believe Edgar Poe did this to evoke an uncanny
feeling in the reader and to add to the sublime of the short story. This link between living and
inanimate gives the story an extra gothic element. There was blood upon her white robes, and the
evidence of some bitter struggle upon every portion of her emaciated frame. For a moment she
remained trembling and reeling to and fro upon the threshold then, with a low moaning cry, fell
heavily inward upon the person of her brother, and in her violent and now final death agonies, bore
him to the floor a corpse, and a victim to the terrors he had anticipated. The supernatural element of
Madeline coming back from the dead or being a ghost creates conflict within the plot and therefore
leads to the inevitable fall of the Usher Family. I believe this ghostly figure struck fear into the reader
creating a suspenseful follow up, allowing the imagination to take off and picture this supernatural
occurrence. This was never an explained supernatural event. It was left up to the reader s imagination
and their assumption as to what is real and what is a figment of the characters imagination. There was

Homelessness is viewed as a social problem of our society because people consider it to be an
undesirable condition. It s something that most people don t want to see or think about. Our
communities share a social responsibility to find ways to eradicate homelessness. The article, Helping
the homeless get off the streets, takes the functionalist approach to eradicating homelessness, in
addition to this approach; the Symbolic Internationalist Perspective would be a beneficial addition to
the solution of homelessness. The field research method needs to be used to experience homelessness

homeless and it continues to keep them in their cycle of poverty. The article, Helping the homeless get
off the streets, represents the Functionalist Perspective, which comes from the works of Auguste
Comte, the founder of sociology. Comte believed that society was like the human body. Each part
interrelated and assigned to perform different tasks that maintain society as a whole (Kendall,
2010.p.8). The different functions within the societal body would be the social institutions, education,
families in the community and our government (Kendall, 2010.p.8). Each function works in different
ways to provide stability and to make sure social needs are met within the community (Kendall,
2010.p.8). In the article, Helping the homeless get off the streets, states that Jehan Benton, Director of
Guilford County s 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness, is working with other entities within the
community to coordinate resources to educate and rehabilitate the homeless. Jehan Benton and the
other entities within the community are using the Functionalist Perspective

The Cherry Orchard Essay
The Cherry Orchard The Misunderstood Comedy When the first production of The Cherry Orchard
was performed on stage in Moscow, there was a significant difference of opinion between the author
and directors. Chekhov strongly faulted the directors interpretation that the play should be preformed
as a tragedy and insisted that what he had written was a comedy. The famous philosopher Aristotle
defined a comedy as quot;an imitation of characters of a lower type who are not bad in themselves but
whose faults possess something ludicrous in them. quot; The misinterpretation of The Cherry Orchard
could be mainly due to a misunderstanding of the comic character. A quot;comic quot; character is

It is this that forms the ludicrous or comic essence of Lyubov s character. True, Lyubov s character
does have her tragic moments. At the end of act four, Ania refers to her mother as to having been
crying all morning. Lyubov also expresses a lot of stress from not having money, even though her
actions do not show it. The main theme of the play can be generally taken to be the passing of the old
order of Russian society, symbolized by the sale of the cherry orchard. Since Chekhov did not belong
to the ranks of the Ranevsky family, unlike other authors who had written plays on the same theme,
Chekhov wrote The Cherry Orchard without becoming personally involved. He was able to see the the
comedy of the whole situation and give it an artistic form of a play full of comic characters. Nothing
was further form Chekhov s thoughts then that his characters should spread a feeling of gloom or
depression on his audience. Therefore the symbolism of the cherry orchard had nothing to do with it s
sale. All it expresses is one of the common reoccurring

How Did Benjamin Harrison Become President
Benjamin Harrison was the 23rd president of the United States of America. He was born on a small
Ohio farm on August 20, 1833, the second of nine children of hard working parents John Harrison and
Elizabeth Ramsey Harrison. In many ways Benjamin Harrison was born to be President because of his
heritage. He was named after his great grandfather who was a member of the House of Burgesses and
a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was the grandchild of 19th President of the United
States William Henry Harrison, and the descendent of many other significant political officers and
patriots. All of these facts added up to his reputation and led up to his presidency.

As Benjamin was about to leave for his studies, tragedy struck.
In the summer of august of 1850, just before Benjamin left, his mother Elizabeth gave birth to a son
named James. The birth was hard for Elizabeth and she never recovered. Days before Benjamin was to
leave for school, his mother passed away, and shortly afterwards the baby also died. Although her
death was incredibly depressing for Benjamin he went to college on time and continued his studies.
Benjamin began college in September 1850, and he was known as a smart, stern, quiet, and religious
student. He followed his father s stern teaching and joined the local Presbyterian Church. He did not
have much of a social life outside of class and did not spend much time with his fellow classmates.
Even though, Benjamin quickly discovered that he had a gift for public speaking. He impressed his
teachers and peers alike with his words and his fluent thinking. He joined the Union Literary society, a
club at his local college, and became its president. Members of the club discussed various subjects that
Benjamin enjoyed, such as politics, literature, world history, American history, and speech. Benjamin
even gave speeches on these subjects to his classmates and his teachers.

college he decided to be a lawyer because of his

Power And Politics Organization Theory
Power and Politics Organization Theory Power and politics have always been around but seldom
openly discussed. Power is learned at an early age through family and schools. Ordinary people such
as scholars hesitate to talk about power. It is often equated with force brutality, unethical behavior,
manipulation, connivance, and subjugation. Power and Politics organization theory was derived from
the modern structural organization in the 1970 s to its present today. In the modern structural,
organizational economics, and systems/environment theories of organization, organizations are
assumed to be rational institutions with its primary purpose is to accomplish established goals. People
in formal authority set goals. The question is how best is it to design and manage organizations in
achieving its purpose effectively and efficiently? Politics plays an increasing role as individuals merge
into the work force. Power, politics and influence are essential and permanent fact of organizational
life (Shafritz, Ott, Jang, 2011). Jeffery Pfeffer Understanding the Role of Power in Decision Making
Pfeffer explores the advantages and limitations of power. Pfeffer states that if power is a force, a store
of potential influence through which events can be affected, politics involves those activities or
behaviors through which power is developed and used in organizational settings. Power is a property
of the system at rest; politics is the study of power in action (Shafritz, Ott,

  • 2. Analyzing Langston Hughes The Weary Blues Jeremy Thomas Mrs. Rothstein English 9H: Period 3 21 May 2015 Research Paper on the poem The Weary Blues by Langston Hughes Langston Hughes published The Weary Blues in 1926 when he was twenty four, and the poem depicts his life in his own unique perspective as a struggling black man. ( Langston Hughes 2 of 3). In the poem Hughes creates a speaker who is spending a night out and listens to a black man singing the blues. In one stanza, he illustrates a scene in which the African American singer expresses pride in his heritage, strength, soul, and the depth to which his emotions and spirituality reach. The imagery in the poem paints a very gloomy and melancholy atmosphere. Even rhyme plays an important role because it gave consistency and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The use of imagery is very strong throughout this poem. Words like mellow, pale, drowsy, melancholy, and dull, suggest to the reader that the atmosphere surrounding the speaker is dark and gloomy. Even lights in the street is not sufficient to brighten the surroundings, being that the only source of light stated is the pale dull pallor of an old gas light. The haziness of this light with darkness of the night, evokes a sense of sluggishness in the atmosphere. The singer speaks of his struggles and opinions, and it is reflected in the third stanza: With his ebony hands on each ivory key (Hughes line 9). In the singer s era, the impression of black and white coming together to form harmony would be unlikely, but he has reached this goal by creating the melodic tune that comes out of the piano. Since he was in a time where class distinctions with African Americans were quite rigid, and he was a busboy, struggling with his emotions, his past incidents inspired and motivated him ( Langston Hughes 1 of 3). Hence, with deep imagery during the course of the poem, Hughes epitomizes his struggles and differences within his society by comparing it with a similar man s struggling situation of life using strong imagery. It is apparent that the woe conveyed through his writing shows his struggles, and displeased attitude towards society and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Analysis Of Tipping The Velvet By Sarah Waters Throughout time there has always been a great interest in transvestism perhaps this is due to it being it able to transcend the normative boundaries of gender expression. This essay will focus on the act of cross dressing and transvestism, as this still remains as a 21st century phenomena with often transgressed representations. Specifically looking at this representation in Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters a Neo Victorian fiction novel, Analysing how the performance and act of a male impersonation is created represented and how the act is received. Neo Victorian literature is most commonly seen as contemporary fiction or culture, which is usually set between 1837 and 1901 during the Victorian era, or it is highly influenced by this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Women had one role within society, which was to marry and take care of their husbands then, eventually tend to the needs their children. However this changes when Nancy visits the music hall she is instantly attracted to one of the performers; a male impersonator called Kitty Butler. After forming a love affair with Kitty, Nancy accompanies Kitty to London initially to assist her with her costume changes. However Nancy soon has a role within the act and forms a career. Nan and Kitty s double act becomes popular amongst audiences. On one evening Nancy encounters Kitty and their manager, in bed together. As a result Nancy leaves her safe surroundings with only a small amount of money and some of the outfits that they had worn when performing her act. She soon discovers that London is a not a safe place for an unaccompanied female I felt suddenly quite sick with apprehension. I placed a hand against the wall; a boy walked past me, whistling. When he had passed I looked about me at the unfamiliar houses in a kind of panic [...] it seemed a wilderness [4] As a result of this she uses the male clothing she has at her disposal as form of masquerade that for a short time allows her to walk without trepidation. However this masquerade only falls victim to Victorian men who believe she is a young male and wish to seek sexual services. Seeing that she has the chance to make money. Nancy becomes a male prostitute. It is during this time that Diana Leathery approaches ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Odysseus Disguise In O Brother Where Art Thou In the film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, the moment when Everett disguises himself as an elderly musician to see his wife parallels the moment in The Odyssey when Odysseus disguises himself as a beggar before seeing his wife whom he has been distanced from for far too long. As people gather in the banquet kitchen hall, Everett, Pete, and Delmar walk up onto the stage disguised as old men with long beards, convincing the past act that they are up next. This is crazy. No one s ever gonna believe we re a real band. Everett insists that his plan will work, saying, I just gotta get close enough to talk to her. Likewise, Odysseus is in disguise when meeting face to face with Penelope for the first time in over twenty years. [Pallas Athena] has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Ideological Bias Reflected in American Crime Statistics As Nils Christie argued, crime is a property of the state (2004). As such, it can be defined by the same systems of ideals which influence the state. Crime statistics, which refer to a category of human acts that society view as deviant, can consequently be argued to be without objectivity (Dorling and Simpson, 1999). The statistics they provide are thus arguably not exact. To a certain extent one could infer they are reflections of society, of those who present the data and most importantly of those who accumulate it. The facts themselves become a socially constructed foundation for social knowledge, which inevitably become subjective. This essay aims to discuss how ideological biases within the Police and to a certain extent the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These particular areas tend to be inner city, with a high population of ethnic minorities, poverty and crime (Lynn and Elliot, 2000) . Thus not only does the sample and the data it acquires become less representative of the population as a whole, it in turn over represents particular groups of people, and the types of crimes committed; which in turn gives across bias ideologies of criminal groups, criminal areas and the level of crime. As exemplified by Tony Blair who stated gun crime was a problem within the black community (Wintour and Dodd, 2007), these crime statics can give across an ideological bias of the relationship between a particular crime and a particular group. Arguably, higher levels of police are distributed in these areas which in turn creates a cyclical effect whereby ideological biases fuels higher levels of policing, which in turn increases levels of offending in statistics, as described by Sharp and Budd (2005), which consequently fuels the ideological biases as demonstrated by Tony Blair. Ideological bias can also under represent particular groups, giving a bias towards their lack of deviance. This was evident in Britain during the late 20th century where Black people were seen as deviant and Asians were seen as law abiding victims. Their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Eliminating the Price Effect of an Index Automatically... By the attempt to eliminate the price effect from an index fund, the fundamental index managers change the set up of the index in such a way that it automatically changes the basic characteristics of the index. As shown in exhibit 10 of the Research Affiliate case, fundamental indices usually not only deal with a higher turnover ratio but also with a higher net expense ratio, for implementing the fundamental strategy in reality seems to go hand in hand with higher costs. Looking at commonly used multiples in exhibit 11, we see no surprises. While the P/E ratio for the RAFI index is only slightly smaller compared to the Russell 1000 index, the Price to Book/Cash Flow/Sales ratio is fundamentally lower in all categories for the RAFI index. More interesting is the fact that the RAFI index is composed of companies with an on average lower market capitalization as well as a higher leverage ratio, which might be a hint that the RAFI is also taking on more risk to produce the excess returns. Even though Research Affiliates uses several methods to eliminate a bias towards a specific sector/type of company, research shows that fundamental indices are clearly more exposed to value and small stocks, which is further illustrated in exhibits 12 14. Looking at exhibits 11 13 we directly observe RAFI s strong exposure towards financial institutions. Citigroup and Bank of America alone account for roughly 15% of the index while Citigroup is not even found within the 10 largest ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Furtebrate Stress Response Stress can be broadly defined as any stimulus that disrupts homeostasis, with the stress response referring to physiological and behavioral reactions to such a stimulus (Selye, 1950).In vertebrates the stress response is an evolutionary conservative process mediated by the HPA axis that allows organisms to respond rapidly to unpredictable changes in their environment. It is initiated when higher brain centers perceive endogenous or exogenous noxious stimuli that threaten homeostasis and culminates in the release of glucocorticoids from the adrenal cortex. Elevated levels of circulating glucocorticoids exert a variety of catabolic, antireproductive, anti growth, and immunosuppressive effects that mobilize and repartition under detailed organisms ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Researchers tend to focus more intensely on perturbations resulting from aversive events. (Novak et al 2013). A stress response can be describe physiologically as a result of discovery of metabolic, immunological and neuroendocrine mechanisms. Several hormones including ACTH, glucorticoid, catecholamines, and prolactin are involved in a stress response. Adrenal glands are essential to hormonal stress responses because they are involved both hypothalamic pituitary adrenocortical axis and the symphatho adreno medullary system. The most salient physiological responses to stress include activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) as well as the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis. Accu rate measurement of the catecholamines (i.e., epinephrine and norepinephrine) released as a result of SNS activation is dif ficult because these substances are only available for transient periods of time (Reeder and Kramer, 2005). Thus, evaluation of the HPA axis, most commonly by measurement of its end prod uct glucocorticoids, has traditionally been the primary means to make inferences about the stress response in animals. • 8. Abuse Of Language In Animal Farm, By George Orwell The abuse of language (propaganda) is instrumental to the abuse of power. This is portrayed throughout the book Animal Farm by George Orwell. For example, Squealer and Napoleon are two characters that the author uses to portray the abuse of power. Squealer and Napoleon had misused their powers, but justified their action through the use of propaganda. Thus, through the use of propaganda, Squealer and Napoleon were able to manipulate the other animals way of thinking. Not only is propaganda used in books, magazines, and articles, but are also used by leaders, politicians, and companies to influence the public, attract attention, and to gain powers. Therefore, the use of propaganda is one of the main tools that is used to manipulate others and a way to justify one s wrong behavior, such as the abuse of power. Squealer, the appointed speaker among the pigs, uses propaganda as a way to gain power. The animals describe Squealer as a brilliant talker... he could turn black into white (16). He was to make sure the animals believe that Napoleon is a righteous leader, even though in reality he is not. An example of how Squealer uses propaganda to abuse his power is when he made excuses for the animal s reduced rations. He had no difficulty in proving to the other animals that they were not in reality short of food...it had been found necessary to make a readjustment of rations...in comparison with the days of Jones, the improvement was enormous (112 113). • 9. Essay on Liberal Media Bias in the United States People rely on journalist to report factual news and to make political points in helping the American citizen in making their decision when it comes time to vote. Since American s do not have time to research every side to all the stories that have been published, they count on the media to portray both sides. However, you cannot believe everything that the media reports. If you were to pay attention to the reports given by journalists, you will find that they report on the stories that they feel they want to get out. And when it comes to politics, they have a way of leaning more towards a democratic view. Many journalists are predominately liberal and are considered more liberal that the general public. They have a way of manipulating news to help Democrats and the liberal agenda. Strong conservatives and Republicans are more likely to distrust the media news (Lee Tien Tsung). Although the media deny being bias, there are ways to prove that it does exist without the proof of studies and research. When journalist only report from one side of the story and use phrases from witnesses or experts from the one side that they are reporting on, media bias is presented. If the journalist fails to report on the conservative side of the story, or the conservative part is either barely mentioned or comes at the end of the story instead of mentioning it during the liberal view, this is another example. Another way to identify this type of reporting would be looking for the journalist to put a spin on the story. This happens when journalist make one side of the story more appealing than the other. (Baker) Since the general public is able to spot bias in the media, they no longer trust the news. Back in 2001, when four major networks starting running evening news broadcasting, the ratings had dropped significantly (Alterman 7). Other means of bias stories in the media have been proven with the help of studies, research, and by taking polls and surveying the general public. Introduction Overweight and obesity are defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an abnormal or excessive accumulation of body fat that damages the health of the individual. Nowadays, obesity is becoming widespread around the world, with complications such as diabetes and an increased risk of heart disease. Currently, it has been shown that in addition to genetic factors, the incidence of obesity is affected by environmental factors such as gut microbiota interactions, and diet through changes in gut microbiota, intestinal permeability and LPS levels. The gut microbiota consists of bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoans, often belonging to the phyla of Frimicutes, Bacteroides, Actinobacteria, and Protebacteria (3). Although, more than a thousand different bacteria are found in the human intestine, only 150 to 170 species are common between different individuals, so microbiotas are specific for each individual (4). • 11. Analysis Of The Kite Runner One major theme that is evident in The Kite Runner is that scars are reminders of life s pain and regret, and, though you can ease the regret and the scars will fade, neither will completely go away. We all have regrets and always will, but though it will be a long hard process we can lessen them through redemption. The majority of The Kite Runner is about the narrator and protagonist, Amir. Almost all of the characters in The Kite Runner have scars, whether they are physical or emotional. Baba has scars all down his back from fighting a bear, but he also has emotional scars from not being able to admit that Hassan was also his son. Hassan is born with a cleft lip, but for his birthday Baba pays for it to be fixed, which left a small scar above his mouth. Hassan also has emotional scars from being raped. The reader is probably shown the emotional scars of Amir the most. Amir has emotional scars because he feels that he killed his mother, and also because his father emotionally neglects him. In the end of the novel, Amir receives many physical scars from getting beaten up by Assef, when rescuing Sohrab. Though scars will never go away and are a reminder of the past, not all scars are bad. The book The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is a story about two brothers who develop both emotional and physical scars that in the end shape them as individuals. This amazingly written novel will leave the reader sobbing at times of sorrow, and smiling and laughing at times of joy. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The Theme Of Power In The Veldt By Ray Bradbury Julia Sherman November 10, 2017 English Pd. 6 The Veldt Thematic Essay When considering reasons for a power or control shift in a relationship between a parent and child, one of the most common reasons considered is the fact that parents are giving kids too much too soon. As a parent gives these things, literal objects and figurative things, too soon, they are actually letting the power in their relationship shift and giving the kids more control. In The Veldt, the author, Ray Bradbury, emphasizes the theme with dialogue and tone. In the short story, George and Lydia Hadley, and their two children Peter and Wendy, are living in a smart house, where almost everything gets done for them. The quote, But I thought we that s why we bought this house, so we wouldn t have to do anything? shows how little they have to do to have everything nice and keep a good home. The children have grown up not doing anything; they do not even paint their own pictures. The children do not do their own laundry, make their own beds, or bathe themselves. Their lives are so simple, and all they spend their days doing is looking, listening, and smelling. The children enjoy not participating in life, but merely spectating it. Peter and Wendy not only get this literally, but they also figuratively get the freedom to come and go as they please. Now, they may enjoy all of these things, but each thing or freedom which Wendy and Peter receive is another piece of power that the parents once had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Suffering Of The Good Samaritan Suffering performs a significant function in numerous religions, concerning situations like: consolation or relief; moral behavior, spiritual development through life difficulties or through self enforced trials, and final destiny. It is supplemented in the Hebrew Bible by the verses found in the Book of Isaiah and the Book of Jeremiah. They detail the emotional and physical suffering of a defeated nation with its vanquished residents compelled into the suffering of expulsion and confinement in a foreign nation. In the New Testament, suffering is depicted in the life of Jesus, which recounts the suffering of the crucifixion, and in the Easter story. The suffering connected with punishment is additionally depicted in the Apocalypse of John where suffering at the setting of the Last Judgment is portrayed as the just compensation for sin and unlawful activity. Pope John Paul II wrote On the Christian Meaning of Human Suffering. This article focuses on the idea of redemptive suffering. The parable of the Good Samaritan belongs to the Gospel of suffering. For it indicates what the relationship of each of us must be towards our suffering neighbour...This is the meaning of suffering, which is truly supernatural and at the same time human. My plan was to ask several questions about her life, as well as what she has faced. This is so I can learn more from her and her culture. My first heading will consist of her childhood growing up, the culture she grew up with and how her family plays the important part of her culture. My second will consist on her adult changes and her identity she has formed. I will then explain how her experiences have helped shaped her through her life and what she talks about during the interview as well as any other stories she would like to contribute. • 27. Persuasive Essay On Breaking Rules Kim Harrison say that Breaking rules isn t bad when what you re doing is more important than the rule itself. In discussion of rebellion, one controversial issue has been showing that everyone s bewilderment. On the one hand, people argued that it is unsuitable to infringe the rules. On the other hand, people demonstrate that it is justified to contravene the rules. However, I believe that it is right to break the rules when it support a cause you believe in, unfairly and understandable. One key reason why we should break the rules when it supports a cause that you believe in, a cause that is right because you believe, in your opinion, defying authority may help other people. One clear example of this is from the text, Hunger games. Katniss breaks several rules to help her people and her family. To understand why Katniss breaks the rules is because her people live in a oppressed life in a society by all the specific rules like weapon not allow, hunting not allow, and you can not go in the wood to pay or sell food. Katniss have to ignore the rules go in the wood, hunt and trade food so her family can have food to survive. Another strong example is from The Montgomery Bus Boycott, when Rosa Parks break the rules on the bus, don t give up her seat on the bus because white people in texas being racist which mean black people have to give up their seat for white people. Rosa park shirk the law and justify for her people. To better understand in that situation is because when other people life in danger you believe that you should stand up and speak for them as a hero. There are many people life get in danger or dead because no one believed themself or wanted to stand up and speak for other people. This historical document illustrates that we should help other people when we think our believe is not wrong. Another important reason when is it right to break the rules is when it unfairly. One significant example is that from the text article title Marriage is a Private Affair. With regard to work specialization, it is generally narrow and mechanistic with the VP for HR, Mary Thorne, fighting an ongoing battle with the Bank on the grounds that PICC needed staff with specialized skills in the insurance industry. With respect to chain of command, while the structure of PICC was intended to be open, non hierarchical and organic, it is clear that it is generally mechanistic in its most important aspects. For example, while there may be an open office environment in general, the senior team members have private offices. Similarly, while the the emphasis of PICC is towards self managing teams, many approvals such as new purchases had to be signed off by multiple layers of the bank s management. Thus, the chain of command is very rigid in terms of its senior decision makers. In terms of centralization of decision making, it appears that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Commerce Is Creating Wealth For Society The among the many functions of commerce is creating wealth for society. However, it is questionable if the firm in Margin Call follows through with its role acting in the interests of society in its bleak predicament. Once it is revealed that there is a high probability of the firm being devalued beyond market capitalization, the employees of an unnamed company attempt to formulate a solution to the imminent crisis. Although there is some dissent from Sam Rogers, Head of Sales and Trading, CEO Tuld promptly decides to liquidate the firm s toxic assets onto the market. Despite the unanimous direction the firm moves in, there are various sources of internal tensions between the firm s employees in that they individually represent differing perspectives within the social context of the firm. Through the various rationales the executives possess as well as the relationships between the employees and the firm itself, Margin Call illustrates the conviction that although the role of commerce is to engender a certain lifestyle for the public, the executives in the firm have warped this belief into a justification for the extreme measures they lead the firm to take in the name of their profit and their survival. In the first scene of Margin Call, the social hierarchy of the firm is staunchly established as Will himself is nonchalant about the layoff because he holds a relatively senior position in the firm and it s evident that he has survived through other layoffs. • 33. Theme Of Supernatural Elements In The Fall Of The House Of... Supernatural elements is something that cannot be explained by the laws of nature. These elements, such as religious figures and activities, ghosts, witches and anthropomorphized animals have been used to develop themes throughout literature. These supernatural elements are often used to outline the conflict within the plot and creates an atmosphere of mystery and suspense throughout the text, which establishes the gothic. Supernatural components leave us to question what is real and what is our imagination. In the text The Fall of the House of Usher there are supernatural events throughout the short story. From the rapidly decaying house that is quite literally connected to the main character Roderick Usher, to the ghost of Roderick s twin sister Madeline. House of Usher an appellation which seemed to include, in the minds of the peasantry who used it, both the family and the family mansion. This line gives us a hint from the title toward the supernatural link between the physical house collapsing and the metaphorical fall of the Usher Family. I believe Edgar Poe did this to evoke an uncanny feeling in the reader and to add to the sublime of the short story. This link between living and inanimate gives the story an extra gothic element. There was blood upon her white robes, and the evidence of some bitter struggle upon every portion of her emaciated frame. For a moment she remained trembling and reeling to and fro upon the threshold then, with a low moaning cry, fell heavily inward upon the person of her brother, and in her violent and now final death agonies, bore him to the floor a corpse, and a victim to the terrors he had anticipated. The supernatural element of Madeline coming back from the dead or being a ghost creates conflict within the plot and therefore leads to the inevitable fall of the Usher Family. I believe this ghostly figure struck fear into the reader creating a suspenseful follow up, allowing the imagination to take off and picture this supernatural occurrence. This was never an explained supernatural event. It was left up to the reader s imagination and their assumption as to what is real and what is a figment of the characters imagination. There was a long and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. No Place to Go Essays Homelessness is viewed as a social problem of our society because people consider it to be an undesirable condition. It s something that most people don t want to see or think about. Our communities share a social responsibility to find ways to eradicate homelessness. The article, Helping the homeless get off the streets, takes the functionalist approach to eradicating homelessness, in addition to this approach; the Symbolic Internationalist Perspective would be a beneficial addition to the solution of homelessness. The field research method needs to be used to experience homelessness first hand. The homeless are thought to have caused their own troubles (Kendall, 2010. p. 39). The homeless can t go to a job interview if they are wearing the same clothes they had on yesterday (Killiam, 2008). You also need a permanent address and phone to be able to get a job (Killian, 2008). The problems continue to mount against the homeless and it continues to keep them in their cycle of poverty. The article, Helping the homeless get off the streets, represents the Functionalist Perspective, which comes from the works of Auguste Comte, the founder of sociology. Comte believed that society was like the human body. Each part interrelated and assigned to perform different tasks that maintain society as a whole (Kendall, 2010.p.8). The different functions within the societal body would be the social institutions, education, families in the community and our government (Kendall, 2010.p.8). Each function works in different ways to provide stability and to make sure social needs are met within the community (Kendall, 2010.p.8). In the article, Helping the homeless get off the streets, states that Jehan Benton, Director of Guilford County s 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness, is working with other entities within the community to coordinate resources to educate and rehabilitate the homeless. • 35. The Cherry Orchard Essay The Cherry Orchard The Misunderstood Comedy When the first production of The Cherry Orchard was performed on stage in Moscow, there was a significant difference of opinion between the author and directors. Chekhov strongly faulted the directors interpretation that the play should be preformed as a tragedy and insisted that what he had written was a comedy. The famous philosopher Aristotle defined a comedy as quot;an imitation of characters of a lower type who are not bad in themselves but whose faults possess something ludicrous in them. quot; The misinterpretation of The Cherry Orchard could be mainly due to a misunderstanding of the comic character. True, Lyubov s character does have her tragic moments. At the end of act four, Ania refers to her mother as to having been crying all morning. Lyubov also expresses a lot of stress from not having money, even though her actions do not show it. The main theme of the play can be generally taken to be the passing of the old order of Russian society, symbolized by the sale of the cherry orchard. Since Chekhov did not belong to the ranks of the Ranevsky family, unlike other authors who had written plays on the same theme, Chekhov wrote The Cherry Orchard without becoming personally involved. He was able to see the the comedy of the whole situation and give it an artistic form of a play full of comic characters. Nothing was further form Chekhov s thoughts then that his characters should spread a feeling of gloom or depression on his audience. Therefore the symbolism of the cherry orchard had nothing to do with it s sale. All it expresses is one of the common reoccurring ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Power And Politics Organization Theory Power and Politics Organization Theory Power and politics have always been around but seldom openly discussed. Power is learned at an early age through family and schools. Ordinary people such as scholars hesitate to talk about power. It is often equated with force brutality, unethical behavior, manipulation, connivance, and subjugation. Power and Politics organization theory was derived from the modern structural organization in the 1970 s to its present today. In the modern structural, organizational economics, and systems/environment theories of organization, organizations are assumed to be rational institutions with its primary purpose is to accomplish established goals. People in formal authority set goals. The question is how best is it to design and manage organizations in achieving its purpose effectively and efficiently? Politics plays an increasing role as individuals merge into the work force. Power, politics and influence are essential and permanent fact of organizational life (Shafritz, Ott, Jang, 2011). Jeffery Pfeffer Understanding the Role of Power in Decision Making Pfeffer explores the advantages and limitations of power. Pfeffer states that if power is a force, a store of potential influence through which events can be affected, politics involves those activities or behaviors through which power is developed and used in organizational settings. Power is a property of the system at rest; politics is the study of power in action (Shafritz, Ott, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
