Figurative Language In The Shipping News
Annie Proulx use of language in the contemporary novel The Shipping News; a vivid impression of
the miserable life Quoyle has to live through every day; the author lay the use figurative language,
focusing on imagery and tone vs. subject to increase the perception the author tries to share with the
reader. The author portrays efficiency with the use of imagery to substitute feelings into objects, by the
use of metaphors to express inner emotions or actions. The flawless narration of the story due to the
use of descriptive tone to express the contemporary and monotonous life Quoyle has to go through
every day of his lonesome life. At the end of the story, when the author wraps up Quoyle s wretched

The Feet Of Jesus And The Earth
In order to support yourself it is more than likely that you will have to work with either your head or
your hands. Many Americans choose to work with their heads; however not all Americans were
always given a choice on how they wanted to work. Viramontes Under the Feet of Jesus and Rivera s
And the Earth Did Not Devour Him gave accurate descriptions to the types of situations many
Hispanic families used to face when trying to support a whole family while working in the fields. In
both Under the Feet of Jesus and And the Earth Did Not Devour Him, Viramontes and Rivera illustrate
how depending on physical labor jobs created additional obstacles for migrant families. In the novel
Under the Feet of Jesus , Estrella is the oldest of the children and has a larger recollection of memories
from when her family was struggling the most. Recalling the consequences of her father s departure
...every job was not enough wage, every uncertainty rested on one certainty: food. The phone was
disconnected. She remembered the moving, all night packing with trash bags left behind to a cheaper
rent they couldn t afford... (14). Viramontes displays the severity of these situations because these
memories are being recollected by a child. Even at such a young age, Estrella recognized that food
was the main priority for her family, something they needed but were not always sure they would had.
Estrella s family faced additional struggles because they were seen as immigrants and automatically

Generational Differences Of Generation X And Post-Millennials
Generational Differences of Generation X and Post Millennials When observing the core ideologies of
a group, the various circumstances to which the said group was exposed profoundly impacts their
beliefs, in turn developing the methods through which their ideologies arise in society. Pertaining to
the values of given generations, the stark contrast existing between the application of their values
often compromises the structure of society as a whole as the conflicts arising between the said groups
exacerbates societal similarities between generations. With the disparity existing between the lives of
those from Generation X and Post Millennials and consequently their values, the cumulated ideology
of society, existing from a combination of both groups values, has challenged the well being of the
state of health and in turn, initiated the deterioration of genuine interaction and integrity. Considering
those associated with Generation X, their core values, grounded in independence coupled with
stability, allowed society to develop a structure through which individuals could function. Prior to
beginning to perceive the values of the generation themselves, one must first observe their
manifestation given the context of the time period. In observing the socioeconomic situation of the
time, an era of two income families, rising divorce rates, and a faltering economy (Kane), one notices
the breeding ground for their individualistic ideals and consequently their core ideologies grounded in
tangible success rather than true fulfillment. The necessity to adapt to the home situation often
containing two working parents, often divorced, inevitably allowed those in Generation X to develop a
sense of independence a more importantly, perceive the need for it, from a young age. Given this
sense of stoicism that was allowed to develop through this, one can see the generation s almost
impervious nature to the psychological implications of social jealousy. Due to their individualism and
distaste for social ingratiation, the generation established an underlying pragmatic nature in the society
of their time. In addition to this, Generation Xers grew up in an age of incessant political turmoil. Take
for example, the Cold War,

Supreme Court Case Essay
1. What is the role of the Supreme Court?
Echoing my forum statement of week 2, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) was
created by, and receives its authority from Article III of the United States (U.S.) Constitution in 1787
and ratified in 1789 [1]. As head of the U.S. Governments judicial branch, the role of SCOTUS is to
enforce the Rule of Law of the U.S. Constitution, seeing that the lower courts do not undermine the
Constitution and the freedoms and liberties it provides to the citizenry; they are the ultimate arbiters in
judicial cases. SCOTUS is comprised of a Chief Justice and eight Associate Justices, who are all
appointed by the President of the United States, but must be confirmed by Congress, and serve a life
term until they choose to retire, resign or are removed due to gross neglect or legal misconduct. The
SCOTUS also acts a check and balance to the President and Congress, ensuring they do not abuse
their authority by exercising their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The authority of judicial review by SCOTUS is not actually defined by the U.S. Constitution, but
rather inferred by the Constitution s framework, design and the history of case law heard by SCOTUS.
Judicial Review doctrine was solidified by comprehensive consent across all legal spheres after the
case of Marbury v. Madison, 5 U.S. 137 (1803) [2]. This case became a landmark verdict, establishing
the definite separation between the branches of government, not just in theory, but in practical
application when SCOTUS ruled an act of Congress unconstitutional [2]. 3. Explain the two theories

Upton Sinclair s The Jungle Essay
For centuries immigrants have left their homes and have journeyed to the United States in pursuit to
live out the American Dream , an idea that the U.S. will provide people with a better life. However,
this better life was not just given upon arrival, immigrants were not told the horrid experiences, and
backbreaking hour, they would face in search for a better life. There is no better representation of this
than Upton Sinclair s The Jungle, this book is a very accurate representation of the life of the vast
majority of people within the United States. During the time when this book was written there were
few jobs, and the jobs that were obtainable were mostly factory jobs with horrible conditions that
entailed excruciating hours. Aside from the dangerous conditions, the pay was next to nothing making
it near impossible to afford food and shelter, let alone providing for a family. Immigrants quickly
found out that the American Dream was not the glorified vision that they thought, rather more like the
song Welcome to the Jungle by Guns N Roses . After examining the lyrics, you can tell the similarities
Axl Rose and the rest of Guns N Roses were facing as they tried to make it in the music industry. In
the jungle, welcome to jungle, watch it bring you to your knees, I wanna watch you bleed, once you
get to the U.S. you ll get ripped down to almost nothing and suffer from the horrible conditions that
you are faced with. The Jungle takes all of the issues immigrants

Wireless Led Dot Matrix Notice Board
INTRODUCTION
This project implements the concept of wireless technology and LED scrolling display to construct an
energy efficient and versatile electronic notice board for institutional purpose. The system uses dot
matrix LED panels to construct a horizontal display module in which any kind of messages can be
displayed and scrolled. The message to be displayed can be send wirelessly from a remote computer
with the help of wireless RF transmitter and receiver. This system is also equipped with the RFID
technology for institutional applications in which any student can be logged in using his unique ID to
view his academic status like percentage of attendance, exam results sectional marks etc. for this
application an RFID reader is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The approximate time is 20ms so if the light is turned on at a frequency gt;50Hz (1/20ms) then your
eye will not notice any flicker at all. Multiplexing uses this fact to reduce the number of pins needed
to drive an LED display. You can do this by splitting the 32led displays into 7 rows and 5columns
which lets you drive it using 7 row outputs and 5 column outputs. In fact the 5x7 led matrix block
used here has all the leds arranged in this way already.
Each row is driven in turn and as long as all of the rows are driven within a time period of 20ms it will
appear as though the LEDs are on continuously. To turn a specific led ON , data is output to the
column drivers when a row is driven.
To save more pins it is common to use a helper chip and in this project it is a Johnson counter (a
4017). This generates a walking one every time that it s clocked. Since you only want one row on at a
time it is the ideal chip for this application. In this project when the 4017 has been reset it outputs
logic high at Q0 which is not connected so during reset the 4017 does nothing. This allows you to use
the column driver port for something else if you want to when you are not driving the LEDs.To drive
the 4017 all you need is two pins one for reset and one for clock. So to fully drive the 32 matrix led
display you need only 4 4017.
The most difficult thing about using the dot matrix LED display is defining the characters. Basically

The Three Stages Of Epistemology In The School Of Knowledge
The term epistemology is derived from the Greek word episteme, meaning knowledge. It is concerned
with what we can know about reality and how we can know it. It seeks to find out the relationship
between the knower and the known. So, basically it is concerned with the sources, the extent, the
possibilities, the legitimacy and the nature of knowledge. Over the course of philosophy, rarely, has
the philosopher concentrated on all of these issues. Most of them have focused on only one or two of
these issues and have excluded the others. There is a vast array of views about those topics, but one
virtually universal presupposition is that knowledge is true belief, but not mere true belief. For
example, lucky guesses or true beliefs resulting from wishful thinking are not knowledge. Thus, a
central question in epistemology is: what must be added to true beliefs to convert them into
knowledge (Klein, 2005). Some key epistemological questions are:
What is knowledge? How we can define the concept of knowledge?
What is the extent of our knowledge? About what sorts of things the knowledge can be acquired?

Wright s Hunger
The reality of the past is that it is one of the few things that remain forever. For some, it is possible to
run from the past temporarily; however, it eventually catches up to the present and impacts a person
positively or negatively. In chapters thirteen and fourteen, Wright s revived childhood hunger for
learning causes him an internal conflict about his identity as an African American man with unique
desires. Following this idea of past meeting present, Wright re encounters his old hunger by
sympathizing with Falk and Mencken, men who have brought down upon [them] the scorn of the
South (308) for their beliefs and opinions, and immersing himself in literature. In doing so, he
recognizes how racism has shaped him to endure pain and accept

Essay on Reconstruction and Industrialization
Reconstruction and Industrialization After the Civil War, the nation witnessed two major social
economic movements: Reconstruction and Industrialization, which changed the country completely
and made it one of the greatest industrialized countries in the world. However, it changed not only the
country, but also, the society, its way of life and traditions. The effort to rebuild the southern states and
restore the Union was known as Reconstruction, a period that lasted from 1865 to 1877. Several
different plans for Reconstruction emerged during and after the war. Much debate about differing
plans centered on who would control Reconstruction the President or Congress. Lincoln had wanted to

In addition to addressing several civil rights issues, the amendment prohibited many former
Confederate officers and government officials from voting. This period of Radical Reconstruction did
not bring much change in the South. Although blacks began to participate in political life, they met
tremendous hostility. Some Southern whites adopted a policy of terror to keep the freedmen from
becoming too independent. Because blacks had no jobs or land they became sharecroppers in a kind of
economic slavery. Grant won election in 1868, and Congress became free to follow its Radical
Reconstruction policies. It successfully proposed the Fourteenth and the Fifteenth Amendments.
However, a major depression occurred in 1873. In addition, public attention was diverted by the graft
and corruption in President Grant s cabinet. Corruption in the Grant administration weakened the
political strength of the Republican Party. In addition, by the early 1870s, all but a handful former
Confederates could vote again. Most of these white southern males now voted Democratic in reaction
to Radical Republican Reconstruction. For most of the next century, the Democratic party would
dominate voting in the South, giving rise to the term solid South. The emergence of the solid South
gave the Democrats greater power in politics at the national level. In 1876, Democrats nominated
Tilden, the governor of New York, to run for President against

Questions On A Texas Court Essay
DISCUSSION
A Texas court will likely find that Adam tortuously interfered with Blake s contract with WP. Under
Texas Law, the elements of tortious interference with an existing contract are: (1) an existing contract
subject to interference, (2) a willful and intentional act of interference with the contract, (3) that
proximately caused the plaintiff s injury, and (4) caused actual damages or loss. Prudential Ins. Co. of
Am. v. Fin. Review Servs., Inc., 29 S.W.3d 74, 77 (Tex. 2000). If the other associate can prove
proximate causation and actual damages, then Blake s tortious interference case will likely prevail in a
Texas court since Blake s contract was an existing contract subject to interference and that Adam s
interference had been willful and intentional.
I. Blake s age does not bar him from entering a contract with WP that is subject to interference
At the time of Adam s interference, Blake likely possessed an existing contract with WP that was
subject to interference. Further, Blake s age has no bearings whatsoever with regards to validity of his
contract with WP. Each of the elements of a valid contract are undisputedly present in Blake s
agreement with WP: an offer, an acceptance in strict compliance with the offer s terms, a meeting of
the minds, consent by both parties, and execution and delivery of the contract with the intent that it
become mutual and binding on both parties. See Stewart Stevenson, LLC v. Galveston Party Boats,

Woman with Peacocks, was created in 1897 by an English born American artist named, Louis John

The dress that the woman is wearing, is a maroon color which is also used in the some of the feathers
on the peacocks. A poppy red color in between the curved lines, creates a band of bright color that
divides a cobalt blue ground on the left and somewhat muted teal grass on the right. This bright,
intense poppy red color is also used in the top part of the sky. The sky may be a two toned poppy red
on the top and the bottom half is a paler poppy red color. The bottom paler poopy red could also be a
wall surrounding the landscape. The peacocks faces, some feathers, and portions of the symbolic
peacock tail feathers are a poppy red color. The sleeves, waist band, and neckline of the woman s
dress are also the poppy red color as well as the dress pattern that mimics the shape of the peacock tail
feathers. The warm color of the sky could be an unrealistic representation or an intense sunset or
sunrise. The calm vivid blue and less bright teal of the trees, leaves, and landscape are in contrast with
the energy of the poppy red color. These complementary colors created a balance in the print. The teal
grass is located in the center with teal tree trucks on the right and the same teal is used in the leaves in
the left top corner. This color is also the body color of the peacock on the woman s left side as well as
in the feathers of both peacocks. The cobalt blue is used in the landscape layered on top and below the
teal grass that is divided by the poppy red curved band. The leaves in the trees are the cobalt blue
color as well as the body of the peacock on the woman s right side and details in the feathers on both.
The color brown is only used in the woman s hair which is adorned with a poppy red flower and
cobalt blue crown of leaves. Her skin is very light and an almost white color. This very pale flesh tone

controversial topics and discussions amongst society throughout time. Divinity School Address is an
essay that many Christians have discussed, using its comparing Emerson s contradictory and harsh

A statement he makes in his address is, Absolute badness is absolute death which can be perceived as
if a person is doing bad or evil things he is going to go down a path of death, doom, and despair
(Emerson 105). Which is true in the case of an unsaved person, but for a Christian if they happen to
succumb and fall into evil temptations, God will forgive them so they can keep going on the path of
goodness and mercy. But on the flip side of the spectrum when compared to his previous statement, he
also says that Benevolence is absolute and real which can be taken as a person is completely filled
with righteousness, honesty, and respect (Emerson 105). These two statements that he has made,
makes it seem like his perception is that a person can either be evil or good, and that there is no in
between in his mindset. But these statements contradict another claim that he had made, which I used
as an example earlier. He said that Evil is merely primitive, not absolute which most certainly
contradicts with his statement that Absolute badness, is absolute death (Emerson 105). His view of this
is that evil and badness is two different things, but in a Christian s view the latter is just a synonym of
the former, and vice versa. For a Christian, they are still in their evil and worldly mindset that will not

Wireless sensor networks are very important in everyday life. This new technology is exciting with

An extension of this approach is in network aggregation which aggregates data progressively as it is
passed through a network. In network data aggregation can reduce the data packet size, the number of
data transmissions and the number of nodes involved in gathering data from a WSN. Therefore, in the
field of WSNs, privacy preserving data aggregation is becoming a hot issue in WSNs. To address this
issue, some protocols have been proposed. In this, they provide a comprehensive summary and
comparison of the existing privacy preserving data aggregation protocols for WSNs. WSN is related to
privacy preserving data aggregation protocols (Ping et al 2012). In the authors reviewed privacy
preserving techniques for protecting two types of private information: data oriented and context
oriented privacy. First, authors focuses only on data privacy in order to provide detailed overviews of
the existing privacy preserving data aggregation protocols for WSNs (Ping et al 2012). Two main
security challenges in secure data aggregation are confidentiality and integrity of data (Sugandhi et al
2013). While traditionally encryption is used to provide end to end confidentiality in Wireless Sensor
Network (WSN), the aggregators in a secure data aggregation scenario need to decrypt the encrypted
data to perform aggregation. Thus, while data aggregation improves energy efficiency of a network, it
complicates the existing

Character Of Iago In Othello
To be consummately evil requires a capability to completely lack all strains of human morality. A
nearly perfect example of this is the antagonist Iago in Othello by William Shakespeare, who
cunningly works his evil throughout the whole play, especially in Act III. Iago is an intriguing and
complex character who instigates the tragedy of the play, but also is the embodiment of the negative
traits of the main protagonist, Othello. Iago is a master manipulator who excels in revealing and

Desdemona must be a wanton degenerate to have truly fallen for a man like Othello. Iago doesn t just
play on Othello s fears about his wife, but also on Othello s insecurities about his status as a black
Moor in sixteenth century Italy. The idea of Desdemona being an allegedly lascivious woman coupled
with Othello s insecurities about being an older black man waning in attractiveness and drive, delivers
a fatal blow to his self esteem. Being reaffirmed in this notion makes him more pliable to be

Chasing Ice Documentary Assignment 1
Chasing Ice is a modern documentary about the human impact on the Earth s glaciers. Following
James Balog and his team the Extreme Ice Survey (EIS), the group aims to provide visible evidence of
human impact on the Earth s glaciers, as they trek through harsh conditions in Alaska, Greenland, and
Iceland.
Balog was once a skeptic of climate change as he believed that the theory surrounding global warming
was based off of computer models. Furthermore, he did not believe that humans could alter the world
s climate on such a global scale. However, through studies of ice records, long tubes of ice drilled
from the ground, Balog found key evidence suggesting ideas contrary to his prior beliefs. These
glacial tubes preserved historical records of the past similar to the rings of a tree, recording past
temperatures and CO2 levels. Using these records, one can see the direct variation between
temperature and CO2. Additionally, the recent spike in both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Additionally, temperature and CO2 levels maintain an average baseline that both temperature and
CO2 levels will ultimately return to, creating a balance between the two. However, when temperature
increases too dramatically, a tipping point is reached and glacier sizes will drop without returning back
to its original size. The excess of CO2 emissions released into the atmosphere mainly caused by
human activities has tilted the balance to one extreme. This phenomenon is the beginning of a chain
event, which ultimately leads to the melting of our polar ice caps and glaciers. Due to the melting of
ice, the average sea level is expected to rise a minimum of one and a half to three feet during our
generation, which would force approximately 150 million individuals to move to a new

Analysis Of Jane Campion s The Piano
Applying a postcolonial perspective, write an analysis of the ideas and values in Jane Campion s The
Piano
Looking at Jane Campion s The Piano through a post colonial perspective ideas of isolation, civilised
vs the uncivilised, and authority and the power as a result of European settlement in New Zealand can
be examined.
Jane Campion s The Piano explores cultural differences between the native Maori people of New
Zealand and the newly arrived Europeans. The first aspect that must be taken into account in this
analysis is the physical setting. The film is set within the lush bush of New Zealand just off the coast
in the 1850s. The setting itself is intriguing, and very intense in its complexity and density, but yet
provides an air of isolation and confinement for the newly arrived Ada. Upon arrival to the beach their
shelter for the night, is set against the backdrop of a hostile and empty coast. Ada s surroundings act as
a canvas to display the displacement of European settlement.
The Maoris often complement the natural environment, working with it in their movements, rather
than against as do Ada and Flora. They are shown struggling through the mud and the new terrain in
situations where the Maoris fit in seamlessly with their surroundings. Their property is also
immediately surrounded my tree trunks, rather than the rich greenery seen elsewhere in the film,
symbolic of the Europeans destructions as a result of colonisation.
Campion utilises costuming to display the authority and power of the European culture, whilst also
criticising its limitations. The natural setting is often juxtaposed with the Europeans dark, and
structured clothing, which is ultimately entirely impractical. Ada wears her exuberant, yet dull
Victorian clothing, whilst Stewarts clothing is often almost too small, confining and restricting. Her
costuming immediately draws the intrigue of the locals, as does her fair skin, isolating her further.
This use of costuming highlights how out of place the Europeans are, but also their ignorance of the
realities of their environment. This is compared with the Maori s more natural, relaxed clothing that
blends with the naturalistic environment. However, there are often aspects of European

Meyerhold and His Contribution to Theatre
VSEVOLOD EMILEVICH MEYERHOLD AND HIS CONTRIBUTION TO THEATRE
Introduction
Vsevolod Emielevich Meyerhold, considered one of 20th century greatest theatrical innovators, was
born on February 10, 1874 in the Russian town of Penza. He was originally born into a Lutheran
German Jewish family with the name Karl Theodore Kasmir Meyergold. In 1895 he took the name
Vsevolod Emievich Meyerhold after converting to the Russian Orthourdox Church. Meyerhold
studied Law at Moscow University for two terms. He became fascinated with the art of theatre and as
his interest increased he registered for an acting class at the Moscow Art School. Between 1898 and
1902, he worked at the Moscow Art Theatre where he was an actor in a wide range of productions ...

In the straight theatre the director takes the part of the author, and makes the actor see his work (author
and director are one). After incorporating the author s work by way of the director, the actor comes
face to face with the spectator (author and director at the actor s back), and acts freely while enjoying
the give and take of the two main elements of theatre the player and the playgoer. The director alone
must set the tone and style of a performance so that the straight theatre may not become chaotic, and
yet the acting will remain free and unrestrained.
This stylization leads Meyerhold to the arrangement of the stage with flat surfaces , specifically, to
eliminate the scenery and present the actor, as a principal mechanism for theatrical expression. This
marked the beginning of the deconstruction of the stage space. The disarrangement of the stage under
Meyerhold is said to have had its climax in the constructive solution of The Magnificent Cuckold and
The Death of Tarelkin. The stage in these two performances referred to above is said to have
resembled the renaissance box, was made as dynamic as possible and put completely to the benefit of
the performance itself by being stripped to a maximum extent; allowing only enough elements to

Compare And Contrast Dracula And The City Of Ember
The books Dracula and The City of Ember are two amazing for readers who like novels with suspense.
Many readers could argue that these books have nothing in common and show no relationship. Yes,
the books show opposition in some aspects but that is what makes them unique. Other readers can

opposing readers see. Although readers can pinpoint similarities and differences in the books, Dracula

Phenotypes pertaining to fins, fin length, and color were observed. Only a few phenotypes, such as fin
length and presence of specific fluorescent proteins, were decided on to be important in understanding
the genetics (Biology 2202 Genetics Laboratory Handout, University of Minnesota Duluth, 2015).
Fishes with these phenotypes were counted and recorded.
Generating Hypotheses
Numbers of the wild type and transgenic fish were compared. Type of transgenes and type of
inheritance were hypothesized based on the patterns seen in the offspring. Using that information can
help determine the parent genotypes and thus determine a final inheritance pattern. A null hypothesis
was then formed relative to the genes and inheritance pattern of each tank (Biology 2202 Genetics
Laboratory Handout, University of Minnesota Duluth, 2015).
Data Analysis
Hypothesis were generated by comparing the phenotypes of each tank. The hypothesis included the
ratio and expected inheritance pattern, and that any difference is due to chance. Using the information
collected based on the genotypes of the parents and the formed hypothesis, the expected value for each
phenotype were calculated and recorded. A chi square test was used to determine the P value and

Session Three Goal Work through possible comparison of babies, progression and regression while in
the NICU. Group members are struggling with the many facets of having a NICU baby. This session
will deal with some of the very common issues. Parents of NICU babies are often worried about how
slowly their child may be progressing in comparison to other babies. This session the group will work
through some of those progressions and regressions and help the parents to cope with this. Parents are
sitting in the NICU for hours, watching other babies do things that their baby is not doing. However,
this session will help show the parents that they are all doing this. Every parent in the group has likely
been the parent on either end of that frustration/joy. Regression can be hard for parents and does

will be discharged from the hospital. This can cause them to become upset when that does not happen

The Pitiful Human Condition Exposed in Endgame, Dumbwaiter, and The Horse Dealer s Daughter
The three stories, The Endgame (Beckett), The Dumbwaiter (Pinter), and The Horse Dealer s
Daughter (Lawrence) all deal with the themes of repression, repetition, and breakdowns in
communication. The stories show us the subjectivity of language and exemplify the complexities of
the human condition.
Samuel Beckett arrived on earth in Ireland on Good Friday, April 13, 1906. He then spent the rest of
his life wanting to be somewhere else. Beckett s life was one of silence, solitude, and depression. He

The play premiered on April 3, 1957 at the Royal Court Theatre in London in French and was Beckett
s second masterpiece.
Beckett s plays typically take place in one room signifying a type of prison to its inhabitants. The
characters endlessly repeat patterns of behavior such as repetitive questions, looking out windows, and
telling the same stories. These repetitions are symbolic of the inane repetitions that human beings
make every day wake up, go to work, come home, go to sleep.
The absolute meaninglessness of this repetition is part of the human condition. The wait for death is
unavoidable. The human being is born, lives, and then dies. Beckett s point is that there is no meaning
to life, he calls it absurd . Beckett participated in The Theater of the Absurd , which was a French
movement in the fifties and wrote plays with this theme of nothingness .
Influenced by Beckett and The Theater of the Absurd was Harold Pinter. Important to understanding
Pinter s plays is understanding the nature of silence. Pinter categorized speech as that which attempts
to cover the nakedness of silence. In The Dumbwaiter, the dumb waiter symbolizes a disconnection in
human communication. The two characters, Gus and Ben, are hit men awaiting orders on who is their
next victim. Their orders are (presumably) finally sent down from the above floor via the dumb waiter.

Kosinski s Being There and the Existential Anti-Hero...
Kosinski s Being There and the Existential Anti Hero
Critics have referred to Kosinski s Being There as his worst novel. Perhaps, Kosinski s prosaic style is
deceptive in its apparent simplicity (especially when contrasted with The Painted Bird). What
Kosinski seeks to do, as Welch D. Everman relates, is to stimulate the reader s recreative and
imaginative task by offering only the essentials...Kosinski s style draws the reader into the incident by
refusing to allow him to remain passive (25). This essay will propose that Being There is a major
existential work following in the tradition of Sartre and Camus in which Chance, the main protagonist,
mirrors Camus s Mersault in A Happy Death and in which Koskinski demonstrates ... Show more

Chance has been given his name because he had been born by chance , yet as Everman shows, this is
true of everyone, and so his given name is hardly a name at all....In addition, he loses this rather
tenuous name early in the book... and therefore is without a real name (63).
Furthermore, no one in the book exists without some type of tangible record proving existence. When
Mr. Franklin, the Old Man s executor, interrogates Chance, he seeks commodified proof of Chance s
existence; he asks for, among other items, a checkbook, driver s license, insurance card, tax forms.
Chance, encountering the existential dilemma, the quest for identity, counters: you have me. I am here.
What more proof do you need (18)? Of course, mere existence proves useless and Chance is
excommunicated from his beloved garden. Why does a writer who displays such brilliant technical
skills and prosaic style resort to utilizing such a one dimensional character? Perhaps Koskinski has
simply found the next logical step in the chain of psychological evolution. Yet, rather than the natural
heir to Benji Compson, Chance is, instead, the natural descendent of Patrice Mersault.
After Nietzsche declared God dead, we spent the next half century in an angst ridden frenzy. Sartre,
Beckett, and Camus best exemplify this condition in their writings. Camus s Mersualt (perhaps the

Invasive Species Invasive Species
An organism that is non native to an ecosystem can be defined as an invasive species. Animals, plants,
and fungi can all be considered invasive, exotic, or alien species if they are not originally from that
habitat. These intruders alter the pathways of native organisms by competitive exclusion, niche
displacement, hybridization, introgression predation, and in severe cases extinction (Mooney 2001).
Invasive species can severely and adversely affect populations of native species. Foreign organisms
can be studied around the globe and dedicated ecologists have the responsibility of studying how these
non native species are impacting ecosystems. There are many ways that a species may become
introduced into a new ecosystem. Human activity has long played a role in the translocation of many
types of plants and animals. Throughout time humans have transported species across land, sea, and
sky for recreational purposes, medicinal purposes, and aesthetic purposes. Though the human species
is largely responsible for species translocation, we are not the only cause. Abiotic forces like the wind
and sea play a large role in transporting various organisms and seeds to new and far lands. Not all
introduced species are bad and some have proven to be quite beneficial to new ecosystems. Though
there are beneficial introduced species, more tend to hurt existing ecosystems rather than help it.
When introduced species exploit a specific species trait or fill a vacant niche in an

This is done through the character of Charlie Bucket. Charlie is the protagonist in the story, but he is
not perfect as, like the other children, he also gives into temptation. This happens when Charlie and
his Grandpa decide to try a drink that will make you fly, although by doing this they nearly get killed,
they eventually return safely back to the group, believing that no one had found out about what they
did. This has many connections to the story of Adam and Eve, who eat a forbidden fruit but believe
that God will not be able to catch them. However, God knew what they had done and in result they
were banished from the Garden of Eden. Charlie, like Adam and Eve, also pays the consequences of
this actions when Wonka denies him the prize of a lifetime supply of chocolate. Unlike the story of
Adam and Eve however, when Charlie shows remorse for his actions Wonka reveals to him that he
was only testing him and declares that he wants Charlie to take over the factory. This relates to the
bible in John 1:9, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us
from all unrighteousness . This idea also touches on the biblical worldview that no human is perfect
and it is impossible for someone not to sin, however it is to ask for forgiveness which is most

auteur theory. Anderson s films have frequent themes, visual and methodological style and he even
uses a lot of the same actors in most of his films. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) is a great

The Impact of Electric Vehicles on Greenhouse Gas...

economy wide CO2 cap and trade reduction program to reduce CO2 emissions to 17% below 2005

As part of the United States planned greenhouse gas emissions reduction strategy, it is necessary for

Assassination Of The Post War 20th Century
He was shot on 22 November 1963, while travelling with his wife through Dallas, Texas, in the back
of an open top convertible.Lee Harvey Oswald opened fire as the presidential motorcade passed the
Texas School Book Depository at 12.30pm and the president was pronounced dead at Dallas s
Parkland Hospital 30 minutes later. The assassination became a defining event of the post war 20th
century, but a lack of clarity over the precise circumstances, together with the fact his assassin was
himself murdered two days later, have led to a host of conspiracy theories over who was to blame. In
1964, the Warren Commission concluded Kennedy was killed by a lone assassin Oswald while three
other investigations, in 1968, 1975, and 1978 79, confirmed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It s just one reason why conspiracy theorists think more than one shooter was involved.
The Grassy Knoll: Most JFK conspiracy theories pivot around the idea that Oswald wasn t acting
alone. When the president was hit by the bullet that killed him, the motorcade was passing a grassy
knoll on the north side of Elm Street. Newspaper photographs record that shortly after the shooting,
police arrested three tramps found in a railroad car behind the knoll. Because the men were clean
shaven and well dressed there was speculation that they were CIA assassins rather than hobos.
The Long List of Culprits: If Oswald was a paid assassin rather than a disaffected loner, who was
writing his pay cheques? The list of candidates is long, but some names are put forward more than
most. They are:The CIA: The idea that the assassination was a CIA plot sounds bizarre, but conspiracy
theorists suggest the president s alleged comment that he wanted to splinter the CIA into a thousand
pieces and scatter it to the winds made him an agency target. Other theories suggest that one of the
tramps (see above) was E Howard Hunt, a former CIA operative who was involved in the ill fated Bay
of Pigs operation to oust Cuban leader Fidel Castro.
The Mafia: Why would the mafia want JFK dead? Because his brother, Robert, was turning up the
heat on organised crime. Robert was the US attorney general at the time and his anti mafia crusade

Research Paper On Queen Victoria
he Victorian Era is the era in which Queen Victoria ruled England. During this time period, Queen
Victoria set many regulations, demands and expectations in regards to women fashion and lifestyle.
Queen Victoria is recognized for her keen and unmistakable profile; as well as her seventy years of
kinship in England and her actions and demands amongst women of that time period and as well as in
that society. She established strict, personal morals for women in that era and explicit demands of the
way women were supposed to dress, whether it was inside or outside, they were expected to dress in a
certain way. In the video that was shown based on Queen Victoria and her outlook on women, it was
said that women spent most of their time changing clothes. In Queen Victoria s point of view, women
could only be considered as a proper lady only if they followed the morals and code of etiquette. This
idea was proposed by the Queen herself, but after a while it began to disintegrate due to the different
ideas that were publicized in magazines. Over time, women were becoming suffragists. They were
influenced by the ideas that were posted in magazines as to what the ideal woman was and they began
to protest for their rights and for equality. In the quote that was said by her, she says, Feminists ought
to get a whipping. This just goes to show that she disagreed with them, showed no interests in the
rights of equality for women and that those ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She ruled for more than seventy years. However, women were struggling and striving to find the ideal
woman and what is the ideal woman. The Queen s opinion as to the ideal woman was a pure, original
child house keeper, mainly because women were not considered equal to men and therefore they
couldn t vote in elections, sew or have ownership of any property. They were also restricted from
having any profession, other than a

Integrated Project Delivery Paper
Integrated Project Delivery or IDP is a one of the newest project delivery methods in the US
construction industry. This method focusses on the collaboration of all the parties involved during the
entire process of construction. As all the teams work together, the risks, liabilities, incentives and
responsibilities are equally shared by everyone. Even associates having more than 5% of share in the
total cost of the construction project are equally liable as any other members of the entire group.
Building Information Modelling or BIM is usage of various soft wares which are flexible, highly
detailed, contain extensive data and can efficiently help in simulation the activities of construction.
This simulation can be rendered in various dimensions. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This helps in making the project extremely cost and time effective. The construction manager can
provide design timelines to all the participating members of the project. Once the designs are ready,
the design conflicts can be solved in group meetings. The traditional method of construction is
inefficient in this matter as the problems in design will be faced on site and corrections to this can be
extremely costly and inefficient.
IDP is a signed contract between all the participating parties. Therefore, the BIM designs can work as
legal documents if any issues arise. The amount of importance given to these drawings and other
policies can be decided in group meeting of the various parties. This helps in making the contract
clearer. Also, the designers can copyright or have mutual understandings between the constructors
regarding the sharing of their designs with any third party or using the designs in any future

Analysis Of Sylvia s The Cow
Sylvia isolates herself in nature and identifies herself as a person who prefers to be alone. While
wandering in the woods and playing around with her cow, she would look upon the cow s pranks as an
intelligent attempt to play hide and seek, as [she] had no playmates (Jewett 196). Sylvia does not
experience human interaction, besides her grandmother, due to being isolated in the countryside.
However, she interacts with her best friend, Mistress Moolly the cow, as a way to fill in the need of
communicating with others. Sylvia could be feeling lonely, so she treats her cow as a friend. Mrs.
Tilley, Sylvia s grandmother, notices how her granddaughter spends more time in nature. She states,
Afraid of folks, they said! I guess [Sylvia] won t be troubled no great with them up to the old place
(Jewett 196). The old place indicates Sylvia s house in the city. Generally, a city is crowded and there
is not enough space for her to freely wander unlike the countryside. Mrs. Tilley suggests that her
granddaughter is more comfortable in the countryside, where it is open and peaceful, rather than the
congested city. There is a slight hint of transcendentalism in Sylvia. Due to her familiarity with nature,
she realizes how much she prefers being alone in the woods. Additionally, the isolation that Sylvia
experiences allow her to retain her innocence, a part of her identity, until she meets the hunter. Sylvia
experiences a coming of age process as she meets the hunter in the woods

How To Achieve Maximum Recovery
In order to achieve maximum recovery, you have to choose your rehabilitation services carefully, and
you should choose a program that meets the needs of the individual. Second, the family should play a
vital role in helping with the rehabilitation process. Recovery is an ongoing and active process that
requires solid and informed decisions. Because of healthcare that operates on a fee for services model,
you have to understand how a plan will work. As a persons seeking treatment for brain injury, you will
have to pass through gatekeepers and accumulate referrals. If your care has been denied, you will have
to file for an appeal. An informed consumer will make the best choice, and following these principles
will guide you through the process. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That point cannot be overemphasized. You want to have a log of who you spoke with, and you need to
maintain a log of the date and time. Always keep a copy of the correspondence. Another benefit of this
is that you do not forget the most pertinent information. Instead of keeping a written log, you can also
video record the conversation so that they can be referred to later. Any time that you have been given a
commitment for services, such as the quantity or the costs, get it in

Explore in Relation to a Client You Have Nursed...
This essay will be exploring the psychosocial influences on a 68 year old lady called Susan Smith s
perception to her health, along with her response to illness. To do this we must look at a definition of
both psychology and sociology and discuss any possible effects these have had on Susan s perception
of health issues. Also this essay will be looking at any influences such as education, in relation to a
female of Susan s age and background, and discuss whether these issues have affected Susan s health
and her responses to illness.
Susan was admitted to hospital for a planned bi lateral total knee replacement, she lived with her
husband John who suffered from bipolar disorder. Susan enjoyed going to her local church every
Sunday but had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another factor affecting peoples perception could be their locus of control, Rotter (1954) made
distinctions between beliefs of people with an internal and an external locus of control: people who
are said to be internal are thought to believe that their own actions can change the outcome of
situations, making these situations under personal control, however externals are seen generally to
believe that the outcome is beyond their personal control, believing that their actions are unrelated to
the events. Therefore if someone has an internal locus of control they believe that they have a
significant say in how their lives are run, whereas a person with an external locus of control believes
that fate has already decided upon the events of their lives. Niven (2000) suggests that people who
have an internal locus of control may be more highly motivated to take action concerning their health;
however they are less likely to adhere to medical advice. This may be due to the fact that internals feel
that they have a choice and say in the outcomes of their health and can decide not to adhere when it is
appropriate. For example in Susan s case when she spoke about having a bilateral total knee
replacement, she said that when the doctor had advised having

Many Americans choose to work with their heads; however not all Americans were always given a choice on how they wanted to work. Viramontes Under the Feet of Jesus and Rivera s And the Earth Did Not Devour Him gave accurate descriptions to the types of situations many Hispanic families used to face when trying to support a whole family while working in the fields. In both Under the Feet of Jesus and And the Earth Did Not Devour Him, Viramontes and Rivera illustrate how depending on physical labor jobs created additional obstacles for migrant families. In the novel Under the Feet of Jesus , Estrella is the oldest of the children and has a larger recollection of memories from when her family was struggling the most. Recalling the consequences of her father s departure ...every job was not enough wage, every uncertainty rested on one certainty: food. The phone was disconnected. She remembered the moving, all night packing with trash bags left behind to a cheaper rent they couldn t afford... (14). Viramontes displays the severity of these situations because these memories are being recollected by a child. Even at such a young age, Estrella recognized that food was the main priority for her family, something they needed but were not always sure they would had. Generational Differences Of Generation X And Post-Millennials Generational Differences of Generation X and Post Millennials When observing the core ideologies of a group, the various circumstances to which the said group was exposed profoundly impacts their beliefs, in turn developing the methods through which their ideologies arise in society. Pertaining to the values of given generations, the stark contrast existing between the application of their values often compromises the structure of society as a whole as the conflicts arising between the said groups exacerbates societal similarities between generations. With the disparity existing between the lives of those from Generation X and Post Millennials and consequently their values, the cumulated ideology of society, existing from a combination of both groups values, has challenged the well being of the state of health and in turn, initiated the deterioration of genuine interaction and integrity. Considering those associated with Generation X, their core values, grounded in independence coupled with stability, allowed society to develop a structure through which individuals could function. Prior to beginning to perceive the values of the generation themselves, one must first observe their manifestation given the context of the time period. In observing the socioeconomic situation of the time, an era of two income families, rising divorce rates, and a faltering economy (Kane), one notices the breeding ground for their individualistic ideals and consequently their core ideologies grounded in tangible success rather than true fulfillment. The necessity to adapt to the home situation often containing two working parents, often divorced, inevitably allowed those in Generation X to develop a sense of independence a more importantly, perceive the need for it, from a young age. Given this sense of stoicism that was allowed to develop through this, one can see the generation s almost impervious nature to the psychological implications of social jealousy. Due to their individualism and distaste for social ingratiation, the generation established an underlying pragmatic nature in the society of their time. In addition to this, Generation Xers grew up in an age of incessant political turmoil. Take for example, the Cold War, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Echoing my forum statement of week 2, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) was created by, and receives its authority from Article III of the United States (U.S.) Constitution in 1787 and ratified in 1789 [1]. As head of the U.S. Governments judicial branch, the role of SCOTUS is to enforce the Rule of Law of the U.S. Constitution, seeing that the lower courts do not undermine the Constitution and the freedoms and liberties it provides to the citizenry; they are the ultimate arbiters in judicial cases. SCOTUS is comprised of a Chief Justice and eight Associate Justices, who are all appointed by the President of the United States, but must be confirmed by Congress, and serve a life term until they choose to retire, resign or are removed due to gross neglect or legal misconduct. • 7. Upton Sinclair s The Jungle Essay For centuries immigrants have left their homes and have journeyed to the United States in pursuit to live out the American Dream , an idea that the U.S. will provide people with a better life. However, this better life was not just given upon arrival, immigrants were not told the horrid experiences, and backbreaking hour, they would face in search for a better life. There is no better representation of this than Upton Sinclair s The Jungle, this book is a very accurate representation of the life of the vast majority of people within the United States. During the time when this book was written there were few jobs, and the jobs that were obtainable were mostly factory jobs with horrible conditions that entailed excruciating hours. Aside from the dangerous conditions, the pay was next to nothing making it near impossible to afford food and shelter, let alone providing for a family. Immigrants quickly found out that the American Dream was not the glorified vision that they thought, rather more like the song Welcome to the Jungle by Guns N Roses . After examining the lyrics, you can tell the similarities Axl Rose and the rest of Guns N Roses were facing as they tried to make it in the music industry. In the jungle, welcome to jungle, watch it bring you to your knees, I wanna watch you bleed, once you get to the U.S. you ll get ripped down to almost nothing and suffer from the horrible conditions that you are faced with. Multiplexing uses this fact to reduce the number of pins needed to drive an LED display. You can do this by splitting the 32led displays into 7 rows and 5columns which lets you drive it using 7 row outputs and 5 column outputs. In fact the 5x7 led matrix block used here has all the leds arranged in this way already. Each row is driven in turn and as long as all of the rows are driven within a time period of 20ms it will appear as though the LEDs are on continuously. To turn a specific led ON , data is output to the column drivers when a row is driven. To save more pins it is common to use a helper chip and in this project it is a Johnson counter (a 4017). This generates a walking one every time that it s clocked. Since you only want one row on at a time it is the ideal chip for this application. In this project when the 4017 has been reset it outputs logic high at Q0 which is not connected so during reset the 4017 does nothing. This allows you to use the column driver port for something else if you want to when you are not driving the LEDs.To drive the 4017 all you need is two pins one for reset and one for clock. So to fully drive the 32 matrix led display you need only 4 4017. The most difficult thing about using the dot matrix LED display is defining the characters. Basically for ASCII characters ... • 11. The Three Stages Of Epistemology In The School Of Knowledge The term epistemology is derived from the Greek word episteme, meaning knowledge. It is concerned with what we can know about reality and how we can know it. It seeks to find out the relationship between the knower and the known. So, basically it is concerned with the sources, the extent, the possibilities, the legitimacy and the nature of knowledge. Over the course of philosophy, rarely, has the philosopher concentrated on all of these issues. Most of them have focused on only one or two of these issues and have excluded the others. There is a vast array of views about those topics, but one virtually universal presupposition is that knowledge is true belief, but not mere true belief. For example, lucky guesses or true beliefs resulting from wishful thinking are not knowledge. Thus, a central question in epistemology is: what must be added to true beliefs to convert them into knowledge (Klein, 2005). Some key epistemological questions are: What is knowledge? How we can define the concept of knowledge? What is the extent of our knowledge? About what sorts of things the knowledge can be acquired? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Grant won election in 1868, and Congress became free to follow its Radical Reconstruction policies. It successfully proposed the Fourteenth and the Fifteenth Amendments. However, a major depression occurred in 1873. In addition, public attention was diverted by the graft and corruption in President Grant s cabinet. Corruption in the Grant administration weakened the political strength of the Republican Party. In addition, by the early 1870s, all but a handful former Confederates could vote again. Chasing Ice Documentary Analysis Joshua Park Student ID: 604772039 October 9, 2016 EPSS 15 Chasing Ice Documentary Assignment 1 Chasing Ice is a modern documentary about the human impact on the Earth s glaciers. Following James Balog and his team the Extreme Ice Survey (EIS), the group aims to provide visible evidence of human impact on the Earth s glaciers, as they trek through harsh conditions in Alaska, Greenland, and Iceland. Balog was once a skeptic of climate change as he believed that the theory surrounding global warming was based off of computer models. Furthermore, he did not believe that humans could alter the world s climate on such a global scale. However, through studies of ice records, long tubes of ice drilled from the ground, Balog found key evidence suggesting ideas contrary to his prior beliefs. These glacial tubes preserved historical records of the past similar to the rings of a tree, recording past temperatures and CO2 levels. Using these records, one can see the direct variation between temperature and CO2. Additionally, the recent spike in both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Additionally, temperature and CO2 levels maintain an average baseline that both temperature and CO2 levels will ultimately return to, creating a balance between the two. However, when temperature increases too dramatically, a tipping point is reached and glacier sizes will drop without returning back to its original size. The excess of CO2 emissions released into the atmosphere mainly caused by human activities has tilted the balance to one extreme. This phenomenon is the beginning of a chain event, which ultimately leads to the melting of our polar ice caps and glaciers. Due to the melting of ice, the average sea level is expected to rise a minimum of one and a half to three feet during our generation, which would force approximately 150 million individuals to move to a new ... Analysis Of Jane Campion s The Piano Applying a postcolonial perspective, write an analysis of the ideas and values in Jane Campion s The Piano Looking at Jane Campion s The Piano through a post colonial perspective ideas of isolation, civilised vs the uncivilised, and authority and the power as a result of European settlement in New Zealand can be examined. Jane Campion s The Piano explores cultural differences between the native Maori people of New Zealand and the newly arrived Europeans. The first aspect that must be taken into account in this analysis is the physical setting. The film is set within the lush bush of New Zealand just off the coast in the 1850s. The setting itself is intriguing, and very intense in its complexity and density, but yet provides an air of isolation and confinement for the newly arrived Ada. Upon arrival to the beach their shelter for the night, is set against the backdrop of a hostile and empty coast. Ada s surroundings act as a canvas to display the displacement of European settlement. The Maoris often complement the natural environment, working with it in their movements, rather than against as do Ada and Flora. They are shown struggling through the mud and the new terrain in situations where the Maoris fit in seamlessly with their surroundings. Their property is also immediately surrounded my tree trunks, rather than the rich greenery seen elsewhere in the film, symbolic of the Europeans destructions as a result of colonisation. Campion utilises costuming to display the authority and power of the European culture, whilst also criticising its limitations. The natural setting is often juxtaposed with the Europeans dark, and structured clothing, which is ultimately entirely impractical. Ada wears her exuberant, yet dull Victorian clothing, whilst Stewarts clothing is often almost too small, confining and restricting. Her costuming immediately draws the intrigue of the locals, as does her fair skin, isolating her further. This use of costuming highlights how out of place the Europeans are, but also their ignorance of the realities of their environment. This is compared with the Maori s more natural, relaxed clothing that blends with the naturalistic environment. However, there are often aspects of European ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the straight theatre the director takes the part of the author, and makes the actor see his work (author and director are one). After incorporating the author s work by way of the director, the actor comes face to face with the spectator (author and director at the actor s back), and acts freely while enjoying the give and take of the two main elements of theatre the player and the playgoer. The director alone must set the tone and style of a performance so that the straight theatre may not become chaotic, and yet the acting will remain free and unrestrained. This stylization leads Meyerhold to the arrangement of the stage with flat surfaces , specifically, to eliminate the scenery and present the actor, as a principal mechanism for theatrical expression. This marked the beginning of the deconstruction of the stage space. The disarrangement of the stage under Meyerhold is said to have had its climax in the constructive solution of The Magnificent Cuckold and The Death of Tarelkin. The play premiered on April 3, 1957 at the Royal Court Theatre in London in French and was Beckett s second masterpiece. Beckett s plays typically take place in one room signifying a type of prison to its inhabitants. The characters endlessly repeat patterns of behavior such as repetitive questions, looking out windows, and telling the same stories. These repetitions are symbolic of the inane repetitions that human beings make every day wake up, go to work, come home, go to sleep. The absolute meaninglessness of this repetition is part of the human condition. The wait for death is unavoidable. The human being is born, lives, and then dies. Beckett s point is that there is no meaning to life, he calls it absurd . Beckett participated in The Theater of the Absurd , which was a French movement in the fifties and wrote plays with this theme of nothingness . Influenced by Beckett and The Theater of the Absurd was Harold Pinter. Important to understanding Pinter s plays is understanding the nature of silence. Pinter categorized speech as that which attempts to cover the nakedness of silence. In The Dumbwaiter, the dumb waiter symbolizes a disconnection in human communication. Animals, plants, and fungi can all be considered invasive, exotic, or alien species if they are not originally from that habitat. These intruders alter the pathways of native organisms by competitive exclusion, niche displacement, hybridization, introgression predation, and in severe cases extinction (Mooney 2001). Invasive species can severely and adversely affect populations of native species. Foreign organisms can be studied around the globe and dedicated ecologists have the responsibility of studying how these non native species are impacting ecosystems. There are many ways that a species may become introduced into a new ecosystem. Human activity has long played a role in the translocation of many types of plants and animals. Throughout time humans have transported species across land, sea, and sky for recreational purposes, medicinal purposes, and aesthetic purposes. Though the human species is largely responsible for species translocation, we are not the only cause. Abiotic forces like the wind and sea play a large role in transporting various organisms and seeds to new and far lands. The list of candidates is long, but some names are put forward more than most. They are:The CIA: The idea that the assassination was a CIA plot sounds bizarre, but conspiracy theorists suggest the president s alleged comment that he wanted to splinter the CIA into a thousand pieces and scatter it to the winds made him an agency target. • 42. Analysis Of Sylvia s The Cow Sylvia isolates herself in nature and identifies herself as a person who prefers to be alone. While wandering in the woods and playing around with her cow, she would look upon the cow s pranks as an intelligent attempt to play hide and seek, as [she] had no playmates (Jewett 196). Sylvia does not experience human interaction, besides her grandmother, due to being isolated in the countryside. However, she interacts with her best friend, Mistress Moolly the cow, as a way to fill in the need of communicating with others. Sylvia could be feeling lonely, so she treats her cow as a friend. Mrs. Tilley, Sylvia s grandmother, notices how her granddaughter spends more time in nature. She states, Afraid of folks, they said! I guess [Sylvia] won t be troubled no great with them up to the old place (Jewett 196). The old place indicates Sylvia s house in the city. Generally, a city is crowded and there is not enough space for her to freely wander unlike the countryside. Mrs. Tilley suggests that her granddaughter is more comfortable in the countryside, where it is open and peaceful, rather than the congested city. There is a slight hint of transcendentalism in Sylvia. Due to her familiarity with nature, she realizes how much she prefers being alone in the woods. Another factor affecting peoples perception could be their locus of control, Rotter (1954) made distinctions between beliefs of people with an internal and an external locus of control: people who are said to be internal are thought to believe that their own actions can change the outcome of situations, making these situations under personal control, however externals are seen generally to believe that the outcome is beyond their personal control, believing that their actions are unrelated to the events. Therefore if someone has an internal locus of control they believe that they have a significant say in how their lives are run, whereas a person with an external locus of control believes that fate has already decided upon the events of their lives. Niven (2000) suggests that people who have an internal locus of control may be more highly motivated to take action concerning their health; however they are less likely to adhere to medical advice. This may be due to the fact that internals feel that they have a choice and say in the outcomes of their health and can decide not to adhere when it is appropriate. For example in Susan s case when she spoke about having a bilateral total knee replacement, she said that when the doctor had advised having ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
