The International Criminal Court ( Icc )
Introduction: The international criminal court (ICC) is an unalike international organization, as it deals
with individuals of the state parties and non state parties both. The Court among its wide prospects
prosecutes individuals, accepts communications and complaints from them, and also allows for an
independent official to initiate prosecution. But, independent officials in international organizations
always have a controversial position given the fact that they have autonomy and authority to act
independently creating a probable threat to the national sovereignty of the member nations. In
addition, here the statute also had the proposal to keep the court under the purview of a political
institution (Security Council) which was also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So, after serious discussions, criticism, and alterations the proprio motu power in the end must
required a pre authorization from the Trial Chambers and was also subjected to a judicial review.
Therefore, the court since its existence from 2002 could only open investigation against seven
countries so far namely; the Democratic Republican of Congo (DRC), Uganda, the Central African
Republic (CAR), Sudan, Kenya, Libya, and Cote d Ivoire. Even when in the initial 4 years of the
court, it was cluttered with 1,732 communications from 132 countries related to situations in 139
countries. The DRC was the first country against which the prosecutor used his proprio motu powers
to initiate an investigation, although DRC then referred itself to the court. Seven years later, the
prosecutor actually used his powers against Kenya to finally be able to initiate an investigation and put
to use the trigger mechanism. The seeds of 2007 were seeped deep back during the general elections
of 2002 in Kenya, where the National Rainbow Coalition (NaRC) led by Mwai Kibaki of Party of
National Unity (PNU) promised the homeless and unemployed a chance of being heard and also
guaranteed a police reform if they would have been brought

Themes Of Gandhi In Hind Swaraj
Many of the themes explored by Gandhi in Hind Swaraj are directly or indirectly influenced by these
texts. I lay no claim to originality. They have been formed after reading several books. For instance,
Gandhi s explanation of colonialism is built upon Tolstoy s Letter to a Hindoo where he argues that it
is not the English who have enslaved the Indians, but the Indians who have enslaved themselves.
Similarly, an uncompromising critique of industrial culture, the hallmark of Gandhian thought, is
derived from Ruskin, Tolstoy and many other writers. Further, Maine s contention, that Indians were
inheritors of a civilization that had representative institutions but destroyed by the new utilitarian state,
was used by Gandhi to point out the superiority of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Eastern (mostly Indian) sources include major ancient religious texts, not necessarily Hindu (like Gita,
Tulsidas Ramayana etc.)
On the surface, Hind Swaraj is primarily a critique of modern civilization, a civilization only in name .
Critical commentators like Bhikhu Parekh and Raghavan Iyer perceive it in this way. Hind Swaraj, as
Tridip Suhrud sees it, is philosophically located at a fleeting, tantalizing moment in human history
when, out of the two modes of life and thought that were present simultaneously modern and a
modern (a modern was not anti modern) it was still possible to follow the latter or, in other words, to
conceive life outside the realm of the modern universe. It is this latter mode of thought that forms the
bedrock of Hind Swaraj because Gandhi believed that modern civilization was built upon denial of a
fundamental possibility, that of knowing oneself. By shifting the locus of human endeavor to objects
of bodily comfort,

Summary Of A Child s Journey Through Placement
Summary and Evaluation Baby Jack displays a healthy attachment to mom, while Alice shows clear
indicators of a strong and healthy bond with Jack. As indicated in the above chart, Jack is displaying
all the behaviour expected for this stage of development (from 6 12 months), and accordingly, as
related to attachment, he was friendly with me as long as mom was close, and vigilant in ensuring he
was always aware of her location. The fact that Alice is able to soothe Jack quickly and consistently
and that he is able to adjust to a new stranger so well points to development of the confidence that
Vera Fahlberg (2012) maintains in her text, A Child s Journey through Placement, as intrinsically tied

Freud s theory of personality examined the interplay between the primitive, instinctual urges the id ;
the practical and rational ego ; and the morally attuned superego ; object relations refer to the object of
an instinct , which is the agent through which the instinctual aim is achieved most often a person and,
according to Freud, most often the mother (Ainsworth 1969, p. 1). The psychosexual development
theory that Freud launched reduces our behaviour to mechanistic responses to an instinctive need for
pleasure fueled by the libido and barriers or distortions to the gratification of the libido at various
delineated stages of development were responsible for later problems in life (Kail Zolner 2012, p. 5).
Erik Erikson later added depth to the approach by including more humanistic elements to Freud s
stages and including more periods of development (p.

Sectional Tension Dbq Essay
By the 1850s sectional tension had spread across the nation. The lack of a solution to the issue of
slavery that would appease both proponents and opponents of the issue increased this tension. The
Constitution was written as a document to bring the nation together but was beginning to tear it apart.
The Constitution was vague in terms of addressing slavery within the United States, causing
arguments made by both sides of the issue to further polarize the nation. The statement, By the 1850s
the Constitution, originally framed as an instrument of national unity, had become a source of
sectional discord and tension and ultimately contributed to the failure of the union it had created. The

Ralph Waldo Emerson was an outspoken opponent of the Fugitive Slave Laws. He believed they were
immoral and unconstitutional because they encouraged the kidnapping and the violation of basic
human rights of free blacks in the north. Also, Emerson believed such laws were suicidal to any hope
of preserving the Union (Document D). Another outspoken opponent of slavery was William Lloyd
Garrison. Garrison argued that the Constitution did not protect the slave system, the words slaves and
slavery are not to be found in the Constitution and therefore it was never intended to give any
protection or countenance to the slave system (Document E). His argument was that the institution of
slavery was not protected by the Constitution. Additionally, Garrison believed that the government
should have been protecting slaves from the slave system because it was an unconstitutional practice
and that it is was not enough for northerners to just disassociate themselves with the slave system
(Document E). The validity of the original statement is further proven by the northern interpretation of
the Constitution because they viewed the southerners as being unconstitutional by practicing slavery.
This discord proved to divide the nation over how the Constitution addressed the issue of

The History Of Atomic Structure

The History of Atomic Structure For many years Greek philosophers were intrigued by the question of
what matter consists of(Lucretius 31). In the fifth century BC, Democritus was the first philosopher to
come up with a coherent atom theory. Based upon the reasoning that a stone can be split in half an
infinite number of times, he hypothesized that at some point the stone would be too small for the eye
to see. Democritus categorized such miniscule fragments of matter as atomos . Without experimental
evidence, Democritus guessed that atoms of all shapes are in continual motion. Such motion affords
the possibility of collisions in which atoms could attract or repel. Alterations in matter could be
counted for by these collisions. Democritus s original atomic theory had little impact on the world for
many years, due to its lack of evidence, and was rejected by another renowned philosopher, Aristotle (
Ancient Atomic Theory ). Following Democritus, Aristotle brought an opposing view on matter.
Aristotle correctly claimed that there are three states of matter, solid, liquid, and gas. Additionally, he
made the proposition that all matter springs from the four elements, earth, air, fire and water. Similarly
to Democritus, Aristotle had no experimental evidence. Democritus s and Aristotle s theories differ in
that Democritus stated that matter exists in atoms in a void, while Aristotle stated that all matter stems

Introduction . In The Early 2020’S An Oral Medication Was
Introduction
In the early 2020 s an oral medication was developed to treat HIV/AIDS, eventually this medication
came to be the new cure for the infection. In the following years, HIV was no longer an issue or a
cause for concern, as health professionals declared an HIV/AIDS free world. Nine years later, in 2031
a new strain of HIV emerged. This new strain has become resistant to the original oral medication that
cured HIV/AIDS years before. In addition, the virus has mutated to a point in which that it is
spreading at twice the pace as the original strain. The virus is more aggressive and no course of
previous treatment has proved effective in mitigating the effects. Thus, individuals have come under

This prevention study will work towards discovering if social changes in the lives of drug users and
sex workers will act as a form of prevention in being infected with HIV. Through social programming
such as, HIV education courses, economic opportunities through small businesses, and safe injection
sites this study will look towards a correlation between these attributes and a decline in high risk
behaviors thus preventing the risk of HIV infection. The concept of risk environment plays a role in
the increase in risk of infection as it is regarded as the space, whether social or physical, in which a
variety of factors exogenous to the individual interact to increase vulnerability to HIV (Roy et. Al,
2011). Many studies of vulnerable individuals such as injection drug users, sex workers, and the
homeless have shown that these factors have a significant influence on their health since they shape
daily risk taking (Roy et. Al, 2011). Thus, due to said situations reports of individuals having traded
sex for money, drugs, or other commodities for survival, increases HIV incidence of this high risk
behavior (Roy et Al, 2011). Therefore this study will work towards mitigating the situations that put
individuals as risk of HIV infection, as a form of prevention.

This prevention study will create public social service programs in order

Is Sexual Selection Within Male Pharomachrus Mocinno...
Title: Is Sexual Selection In Male Pharomachrus mocinno favoured by Longer Plume Tail Length due
to Increase in Colour?
Introduction:
The Pharomachrus mocinno has evolved many behavioural and physical traits as a result of adaptation
to the current environment and lifestyle it leads, however this proposal will focus on the unusual
plume tail length of the male P. mocinno. This particular species habitat requires nests as high as 22
meters in rotting trees (Seigfried et al. 2010). Therefore, the function of the feathers would typically
be assumed to enhance flight, as that would make sense as a useful function in this scenario due to the
high elevation. Surprisingly, however, the long length of the plume tail actually decreases the speed of
the male bird due to the drag force of air (Norberg 1995) and requires it to drop backward off the
branches before being able to fly forward normally (LaBastille et al. 1972). With such issues with the
long plume tails, would sexual selection really be in this traits favour? In a study done on the
widowbird such was the case; males with longer plumes were mated the most (Andersson 1982).
However, the widowbird is completely black (including its tail), while in the case of Pharomachrus
mocinno it is a very colourful bird. Previous studies also have shown, that the bright reflective colours
on the male s bodies help in attracting females (LaBastille et al. 1972).
Therefore, it s possible that the long length of the P. mocinno male s

Aristotle s Theories Of Friendships In Nicomachean Ethics...
Aristotle states that in order to be friends with someone there has to be a mutual goodwill. Does this
mean that friendships of goodness is the only true kind of friendship? Or can you be friends with
someone for utility or pleasure? Using Aristotle s theory on friendships in the book Nicomachean
Ethics can help answer this question. Friendships of utility is when you only care about being
someones friend because you want to get something out of it. It is not a friendship that deals with love,
or caring about one another. Friendships of pleasure is a friendship where you enjoy being around
each other and when you enjoy the others company. You do not truly care about the other person and
love one another. A friendship of goodness or a complete friendship is the strongest ... Show more

He makes it sound like friends of pleasure and utility shouldn t even be considered a friendship. To
Aristotle the main part of a friendship is loving one another. A friendship of love and pleasure doesn t
involve loving one another. Aristotle believes that you should be friends with someone based on who
they are and that it shouldn t be out of pleasure or out of using someone. Also, Aristotle states that in
order to have a good friendship there has to be trust. If you are friends with someone out of utility or
pleasure then can you truly trust them? For me it is very hard to trust others especially my friends. I
feel like in order to fully trust someone you have to care about them and have to love them. For
example, it is very easy to trust your family because you love them and know that it is mutual and that
they want the best for you. The friends that I trust are the ones that I know that care about me and that
want the best for me. I have had friends in the past that have not wanted the best for me, and when you
try to trust someone that doesn t truly care about you then you are at the risk of getting

The study found that the students that used the 3D printed model had a richer learning experience. The
technology allows the medical students to better learn the different physical structures and organs. It
also always them to practice different medical procedures and operations. Indeed, the technology will
help effectively train more capable doctors.
Another application is the ability to print models of patient s organs and specifically plan the surgery.
For instance, surgeons used an MRI to scan a patient s brain and print an exact replica. A surgery was
needed to remove a tumor. The surgeons could see the depth of the tumor and specific details. This
technology allows them to plan and practice the surgical procedures for each patient s case. (see image
above) The 3D printing technology has improved how doctors can plan and practice to be able to
perform precise procedures.
Also, the 3D printing technology provides medical schools with a less expensive alternative to using
cadavers. Cadaver are difficult to acquire, store, and need to be disposed of at certain times. High
quality 3D printers are a little pricy, but are more cost effective. This is due to the availability of
digital files of different models of organs online. With the rising demand of 3D printers, the price is
going down and becoming even more affordable for medical schools. This is another way medical
field is adapting to the 3D

Ronald Reagan And His Career And Changing The World...
Ronald Reagan overcame his poor and deprived childhood by having a successful theatrical career and
changing the world forever through politics. Reagan had a poor yet eventful childhood. In Tampico,
Illinois, Ronald Reagan was born on February 6, 1911 (Banks 199). He acquired the nickname Dutch
because he looked like a Dutchman when he was born (Orr13). Ronald Reagan had one older brother
named John Neil Reagan (Boyarsky 164), who was born in late 1908 (Orr 14). Reagan and his brother

(Boyarsky 164). When Reagan was a boy, he enjoyed drawing cartoons and reading numerous books
(Orr 21). Watching Tom Mix, his favorite movie actor, was another passion Reagan carried with him
while growing up (Orr 22). Reagan became a freshman at Dixon Northside High School in 1924 (Orr

high school career, Reagan began dating a girl named Myrtle Williams (Edwards 133). Myrtle and
Reagan s mother, who also performed in many local plays (Boyarsky 164), influenced Reagan to join
the drama club at his school (Orr 30). As a result, Reagan performed in many school plays (Boyarsky

The Revolution in the English Textile Industry
The hidden story is like a seed of single cotton, hidden inside its soft fluffiness. The truth is clinged
into the historical facts, through books, media, or other sources, and you have to work it this way and
that. It s almost as if the various facts want to hold on to it and keep it hidden. And the history of
cotton is too long and complicate, in a certain way, is the story about of cotton and people in America
that found the Industrial Revolution in America. Expressing the outstanding development, Karl Marx
wrote in 1846 that without cotton you have no modern industry. For Marx, the relationship between
cotton and slavery was similarly unambiguous: Without slavery, you have no cotton. (1)
Cotton came to America from England industrial development. Cotton, a shrubby plant, thrives in
warm climates just suitable for South regions and couldn t be grown in the North, because the climate
was too cold. (2) Early in the seventeenth century, agriculture in the American South was dominated
by staples or money crops products (tobacco, then rice, indigo, and sugar) that fetched a high price in
the marketplaces of Europe; finally came cotton, the king of them all. (3) By 1860, cotton dominated
the American economy. The South exported 66 percent of the world s supply, and cotton made up
more than half of the supply with almost 90 percent of cotton grown in the South. Much of Southern
society had become dependent upon a cotton culture and the institution of slavery. (4)

Because of nitrous oxide s stability, it is not metabolized. Once the inhalation is cut off, it is

In the case of medical care, nitrous oxygen mixed with oxygen prevents pain. Some side effects

When nitrous oxide is used in cars and rockets, it vaporizes, causing a significant cooling effect on the

Risk Quantification
7. How did NASA decide what is or is not an acceptable risk?
NASA identified and evaluated hazards through a formalized hazard reduction process as described in
the NASA Handbook, NHB5300.4. The process required that hazards be determined for probability
and credibility. In order to ensure that the standards within NHB5300.4 were adhered to, a Senior
Safety Review Board was established for overseeing the risk assessment process. The process allowed
for a certain amount of risk to be allowed as long as it was acceptable. To determine whether or not a
hazard was an acceptable risk, NASA used a Safety Classification System, which was a qualitative
system rather than a quantitative system. This was due to the high ... Show more content on

Instead, they maintained their current trajectory of making decisions qualitatively. NASA should have
improved their risk management processes as more data was gathered. Databases could have been
compiled with the information from previous flights that could have provided probabilistic risk
assessment and trends for future flights. If NASA and Thiokol had used quantitative data when
assessing the erosion and blow by incidents, they likely would have come to a different conclusion
when they decided to launch the Challenger shuttle.
10. Which risks should be elevated? To whom should they be elevated? Who should have the final say
in the response mechanism for a risk?
All risks should be elevated to whatever level of responsibility are related to the task or component the
risk is assigned to. For example, lower level risks should be assigned to lower level management and
the critical risks, as described in exhibit V, should be the responsibility of the program manager and
the NASA administrator. It s also important to note that for the risks involved in space travel, the
astronauts on the flight should also be aware of the assumed risks that are taking place during the
development of the space shuttle. One of the issues that NASA faced during the space shuttle
development is that risks weren t assigned to a specific level of authority. No one person had the

Hunger Games Katniss Survival
An unknown person once said, When we read books, we don t fall in love with the characters
appearances. We fall in love with their thoughts, their words, and their actions. We fall in love with
their souls. In the dystopian novel, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, this is exactly what
happens, Katniss moves the readers by having such characteristic and skills to be able to survive.
Katniss s characteristics, of being caring, having a determined personality, and her intelligence in
survival skills, all help support the theme of Katniss being able to survive. One of the largest reasons
for Katniss s survival would be her caring personality and how it is able to affect those around her. At

Acceptance Within American Born Chinese By Gene Yang
Acceptance within American Born Chinese by Gene Yang is scattered everywhere within the book. It s
in each story within many situations. One of them telling about a challenging and treacherous journey
across hundreds of miles of terrain. All of the main characters reveal so much power of acceptance
while I was reading through each chapter of the book. To clarify the many events within the novel I
will analyze and relate my experiences as a soldier to the journeys of the Monkey Key, Jin, and finally
the monk. Immediately from the beginning the book leads us on with the Monkey King to overcome
the challenge of getting accepted to a dinner party. The Monkey King is almost exactly of what one
might but with a twist. He s a regular monkey with a little bit more to offer to the world. He possess
leadership, and understands many skills worthy to be a ruler, and becomes little out of hand when he
gets upset. A prime example of this is when he attempted to prove the guard that he was well worthy
of entering the dinner party. The Monkey King tried to persuade the guard by stating I am the
sovereign ruler of flower fruit mountain in order for the guard to understand that this little monkey
wasn t so little (14). The Monkey King even laid out his credentials for the worthy disciplines he
mastered. This was a great challenge the Monkey King did since it involved thousands of minor
disciplines and four major disciplines. This all tells me that this monkey was no ordinary monkey, but

Sweatshops Should Be Outlawed
Sweatshops should be outlawed. Some of the reason that sweatshops should be outlawed are
employment of minors, who required to work long hours, and they are paid low wages. Powell
provides an economic explanation for the presence of sweatshops in the world. The minors work in
deplorable working condition that cause poor health conditions. They perpetuate the violation of basic
human rights as people are exploited for their labor. Today s sweatshops violate our notions of justice,
yet they continue to flourish. This is so because we have not settled on criteria that would allow us to
condemn and do away with them and because the poor working conditions in certain places are
preferable to the alternative of no job at all. Sweatshops also persist ... Show more content on

At the level of the individual worker, sweatshops can be regarded as a blessing of sort, for they might
be the only way for illiterate people lacking marketable skills to enter the global industrial
marketplace. In many less developed countries with large populations, agriculture is the only
economic activity available to people. Sweatshops provide poor people in developing countries with
better outcomes than the alternative of criminal activity (child and adult prostitution). Employable for
only part of the year, outside of the planting and harvesting seasons, there is little for them to do and
they stream into cities looking for work. Sweatshops exist because of a prevailing mindset that
maintains a clear distinction between business and ethics. My perspective is minors shouldn t have to
work at sweatshops, they should be able to work in a clean and safe environment. During school days
no more than four or five hours a day with a legitimate pay wage. In conclusion, Sweatshops should
be outlawed. U.S. have the rights not to face competition from poor third competition from poor third
world workers, and by outlawing competition from third world we can enhance union wages at the
expense of poorer people who work in sweatshops. (Powell,

The Cause Of Violence And Crime In America
Violence has a deep history since the creation of human civilizations on earth. There is no definite
factor that decides the cause of violence. Per the psychologists, it is in the childhood of a person that
dictates his interest in violence. This causes the debate of nature vs. nurture. Violence can be caused
by influence of both. Violence is also caused by societal conflicts especially in the area of government.
Citizens of a nation often do not have say in the policies of their government and may return to
violence to show their anger. Violence is a powerful way to show strength and intimidate others. Most
people commit violence because of their inability to understand why life isn t fair at all times. For
them committing a violent crime proves to be their own sense of satisfaction that they have done
something to change what bothers them. Other times, it is the helpless victim of cultural stereotypes
and societal dispositions that commits violence merely by being manipulated. Big organizations such
as mafia gangs commit violence for money and security. Thus, there isn t just one simple
cause/reasons individuals or organizations commit violence. It is often a combination of multiple
factors.
2. How can we reduce violent crime in America?
In recent years, America has become prone to violence. Although, overall crime rate has declined,
violent crime such as mass shootings and drug offences have increased. The first way we can reduce

The Major Themes In Homer s The Odyssey
Consciously or not, we are all on a quest for answers, trying to learn the lessons of life. The famous
psychologist Elisabeth Kubler Ross once stated this and it is true about The Odyssey. It is one of the
many themes found in Homer s Epic poem The Odyssey. Among others, some of the themes I saw in
it were the following: sometimes you must be humbled to succeed, just because something is bigger
than you doesn t mean it s better, and don t let pride overtake you. The one big themes of the latter
part of The Odyssey is sometimes you must be humbled to succeed. This is seen in The Odyssey when

that his name is nohbdy. And then later stab the Cyclops in the eye and so that when the cyclops gets
asked who did it, he said nohbdy did it (9.making all his neighbours think he was crying wolf to them.
This is also seen towards the end of the book when Odysseus is fighting his former followers and even
though they have the strength in numbers to beat him, Odysseus still comes out on top. This can be
seen today by the Oregon Ducks. Over the past couple of seasons they have averaged 12 wins a season

Inside Russia s Toughest Prisons Analysis
The documentary Inside Russia s Toughest Prisons directed by Anna Rodzinski gives Americans and
other nations an inside view of how The Soviet Union treats prisoners more severely and unusually
compared to the prisons in America and how this treatment affects the prisoners mental and physical
state; in order to do this Rodzinski shows the audience gruesome videos of prisoners being held down,
suspenseful music and terrifying images of towering prison buildings surrounded with barbed wires
and guard dogs; some of the most dangerous inmates are even interviewed.
The first scene of the documentary are the inmates arriving to Black Dolphin Prison immediately
guards force the prisoners to wear handcuffs and are held down below the waist with most of the
guards armed leading the prisoners to the cells. Rodzinski uses this scene to show the audience how
the guards treat the inmates without mercy or pity; to the guards this is a routine they must follow
mechanically and the convicts are seen as animals. One of the guards even mentions, I ve never felt
any sympathy for them, The Prisoners at Black Dolphin are isolated and the audience can see this in

Why Is Jonbenet Ramsey Important
JonBenet Ramsey Annotated Bibliography Several huge and important celebrities have had
mysterious deaths. What happened? Was it an accident? Did someone kill them? If so, who killed
them? These are all important questions to think of when thinking of such a death. I researched
JonBenet Ramsey, a beauty pageant queen, whom was gorgeous, talented, and young. December 26,
1996, she was found murdered in the basement of her own home. The cause of death was suffocation.
According to police reports, JonBenet was found in the small room covered with a blanket, her wrists
were tied above her head, her mouth was covered with tape, and a nylon cord was wrapped around her
neck . There were also signs of sexual assault before she had been murdered. In fact, that there was a
possibility of her having been sexually assaulted more than just right before her death. The prime
suspects for the case were, of course, her parents. A note was left behind prior to the finding of the
body, stated that if the Ramsey s wanted to see their daughter again that they would have to attain $
1118,000 from Mr. Ramsey s account. This note was obviously not honored , asbecause JonBenet s
body was found around 30 minutes after the note was left. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

A Brief Note On D2 And Computer Misuse Act
D3 How to Improve Web Security.
Websites are exposed to the outside world and everything possible should be done to ensure that they
remain safe and enjoyable environments for the people who use them. Legally it is the responsibility
of the owners of the website to ensure that any information stored about customers is protected and
that the site is not used as a base for installing malicious software upon user s computers or launch
Denial of Service Attacks against other people s sites. To learn more about the legal responsibilities
you should read the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Computer Misuse Act 1990. Apart from the
legal aspects of security there are also business aspects to it. An unsafe website will not attract and
keep customers.
Server Side security.
Servers should be protected by strong firewalls and access to ports beyond standard HTTP and
HTTPS disabled. Do not expose your server s entry points more than you have to. Within the server
you should employ an intrusion detection system like Tripwire to catch attempts at hacking whilst they
are occurring.
Access to the contents of the webserver that is hosting your site should be protected with strong
authentication. It does not matter how strong the rest of your security measures are if your webserver
contains weak passwords and default accounts. The passwords chosen should be as long as possible
and contain special characters, such as the dollar sign, to make it difficult for hackers to use brute

in which behavior can be conditioned and reinforced. These models are widely used in teaching, in
treating problems of human relationships, and in working with personal problems that lead to
destructive behaviors. As behavior modification develops, certain features are assuming greater

Mountaintop Mining And Valley Fill
Mountaintop mining and valley fill (MTM/VF) coal extraction, which is heavily practiced in the
Central Appalachian region of the eastern United States, represents a dramatic landscape scale
disturbance. The process includes removing as much as 300m of rock, soil, and vegetation from ridge
tops to access deep coal seams; the overburden material is then placed in adjacent valleys, burying
headwater streams. Post mining topography, vegetation, soils, and runoff pathways can be severely

MTM/VF has become an increasingly polarized issue following several devastating floods in southern
West Virginia, which have been linked by environmentalists to the potential for MTM to increase
flooding in communities surrounding mining operations.
While MTM/VF is broadly categorized as surface mining and synonymous with traditional strip and
contour mining, MTM is distinct in terms of its scale and management of overburden material. While
surface mining for coal in Appalachia has been ongoing since the mid 20th century, it was until the
1980s primarily on the scale of areas smaller than 400 hectares. MTM in West Virgina, southwestern
Virgina, eastern Kentucky, and Tennessee, by contrast, disturbs areas on the scale of thousands of
hectares. While techniques for valley fill construction vary across the region and are often site
specific, the general definition involves the placement of overburden which is the displaced minespoil
created in the detonation of as much as 300m of ridge top in adjacent valleys, burying headwaters
streams and springs. In the Appalachian region it is estimated that nearly 4000 km of headwater
streams have been buried under valley fills. The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act

Voltaire s Candide and Moliere s Tartuffe
Introduction
The Enlightenment brought about a brand new way of thinking. The traditional, conservative
mannerisms displayed by the church were slowly losing popularity amongst its citizens. The
introduction of reason, knowledge, and rationality were beginning to take center stage of the time.
However, the power of the church was intact. Quite knowingly, much power presents the threat of
corruption and desolation in any situation. Both Moliere and Voltaire utilize strikingly similar
characters throughout their adventures in the form of Candide and Orgon. Both characters have
exhibited similar levels of gullibility, wealth, and overall good outcomes despite hardships that they
face.
Naivety
Tartuffe s Orgon is probably one of the most naïve characters to have graced a play. His never ending
belief that Tartuffe is some God among men is ridiculous. Orgon believes that Tartuffe is actually, no
loftier soul since time began (Moliere 114). His son did not even have a chance to reverse the way he
felt about Tartuffe. After pleading Orgon to come to his senses, Orgon immediately shuns and scours
Damis for trying to falsify Tartuffe s divine nature. He responds to his son with Ah, you deceitful boy,
how dare you try to stain his purity with so foul a lie? (Moliere 134). Candide is just as, if not more
stubborn in the way that he is not willing or capable to think for himself, but rather rely on the
philosophical expertise of Pangloss in order to make decisions or

The Book Thhief By Sylvia Plath
Death is inevitable. Sylvia Plath, author of 1962 confessional poem, Lady Lazarus and Markus Zusak
author of 2005 historical fiction novel, The Book Thief explore the idea that a range influences
ultimately determine a person s final destiny. Zusak and Plath discuss this common idea by utilising
various literary techniques complementing the conventions of their respective text types. Both authors
highlight a range of key ideas such as, the idea that patriarchal standards within society impact the
protagonist s fate, the social influence relationships have on individuals and the effect this has on their
fate and the inevitable role death plays and the controlling influence death has on life within their
respective pieces.
Sylvia Plath and Markus Zusak both challenge the idea that patriarchal standards within society
influence the protagonist s fate in their texts. Sylvia Plath s Lady Lazarus is a reaction to the
oppressive nature of the patriarchy surrounding Plath during the early sixties. Lady Lazarus reveals
Plath s feelings of resentment in this semi autobiographical poem that grew from her feeling trapped
in a cyclical and oppressive environment. Plath employs allusion to the biblical tale of Lazarus where
she describes a, grave cave where she felt, at home. This captures Plath s resentment towards the
patriarchy as she feels that if she does not succumb to her desire to commit suicide and thus control
her fate, she will have to conform to the patriarchal

Focused Clinical Questions A focused clinical research question is comprised of four essential
elements: the patient, population, or problem (P); the intervention of interest (I); the comparison of
interest or the standard of care (C); and the outcome of interest (O). These four components represent
the acronym PICO (Stone, 2002). As the elements of PICO become more precise, the review of the
literature becomes more focused. For example, elements of PICO may translate into medical subject
headings that can direct searches of the literature (Stone, 2002). Also, clinical questions for specific
patient populations can be identified so that relevant information can be found on databases and
Internet search engines easily (Adams, 2012). The facilitation of the data collection process is
determined by how well the PICO components are articulated during the development of the focused
clinical question (Stone, 2002). The development of focused clinical questions begins with the
identification of the patient, population, or problem. This component of PICO must be carefully
defined to avoid information that is too general or off topic (Adams, 2012). For example, there is a
difference between the adult population and the elderly population. This distinction must be made in
this component of PICO to yield accurate search results. The intervention of interest should also be
specified to produce applicable information (Adams, 2012). According to Adams (2012), the

The Sexualization Of Women In Game Of Thrones

In the chapter Male Gaze , she talks about how Game of Thrones and other media outlets objectify
women to gain more male audiences. Frankie claims that, the Game of Thrones sex scenes are biased
towards men and do not appear designed to appeal to women. (Frankle 16) In The Night Lands
episode that takes place two episodes before The Gardens Bones aired, it showed Melisandre seducing
Lord Stannis with the promise that she will birth him a son. Before Melisandre and Stannis have sex,
she tells him that she can provide him a son while his current wife was sickly and brought nothing but
stillborns and death. This shows that the women are just objects used for having children and without
it they were worthless (unless they were prostitutes). Melisandre undid her robe and was completely
naked under it and he roughly rips it off and lightly tosses her on the desk filled with battle plans and
strategies. This symbolized him dominating her and being in control of the situation, he is worried
about the war with his brother but he knows that he can still dominate and control (so he thinks)
Melisandre. This appeals to the male audiences, because they like to be in control and dominate
because it shows how masculine and macho they are. In the show, there is a disproportionate amount
of female nudity vs male nudity, which conveys the message that women are nothing more than sex
objects and eye candy that contributes nothing unless they are having sex or doing lewd things to get
men s attention. This especially shows when Melisandre is completely naked and spread out in front

Teenage Suicide
Teenage Suicide
Suicide is intentional self inflicted acts that end in death( Suicide,

the result may be suicide. In each year, an average of

is that the teenage years are a period of commotion. New social roles are being learned, new
relationships are being developed, bodily changes are occurring, and decisions about the future are
being made during the teenage years. Teenagers tend to commit suicide after large changes, ... Show

The statistics of considered and completed suicide are shocking.
Ten percent of teenage boys admit that they have attempted suicide. Girls in their teens have a much
higher percentage(eighteen percent), which will admit that they unsuccessfully tried to commit
suicide. A teenager in 1990 was twice as likely to die from suicide than a teenager growing up in 1960.
One of the most startling teenage suicide facts is that since 1961, there has been a tripling of
completed teenage suicide( The Real World [Suicide: Facts], 1 3). When a teenager is able to
successfully commit suicide, they leave behind family and friends. In a normal death situation, people
usually feel grief. When a teenager performs suicide, family and friends left behind experience many
feelings. A feeling of confusion and great distress over unresolved issues is very common. Family
members and friends often feel anger and resentment after a suicide. These emotions can cause friends

Relationship Between Female And Female Relationships Essay
Number one and one of many, in terms of wives and casual affairs, will be defined by exploring the
Japanese Heian period s marriage system, the marriage living arrangements, the way in which affairs
were pursued, and the way Japanese people communicated. The marriage system was based on three
different types of relationships. Men of the Heian period had multiple women for these types of
relationships during the same time. Married couples throughout this time usually did not live in a
house of their own, or even together for that matter. Affairs during this time in history were not always
entirely based on sexual attraction to physical appearance. There are a lot of differences and
similarities between how married couples interacted and males and female in casual relationships
interacted, but there is a defined line between number one and one of many.
First, throughout the Heian period, and much of early Japanese history, the majority of marriages were
polygamous; however aristocratic men were often monogamous. There was also a 3 tiered marriage
system. This system consisted of a principle wife, a secondary wife, and unofficial casual affairs. The
principled wife is required to be faithful, even if the husband is not, and she is not allowed to divorce.
She had the number one title; her children were expected to be given first consideration for
everything; inheritance, title, marriage and position. The principle wife is usually very educated,
beautiful, and high ranking.

  • 2. The International Criminal Court ( Icc ) Introduction: The international criminal court (ICC) is an unalike international organization, as it deals with individuals of the state parties and non state parties both. The Court among its wide prospects prosecutes individuals, accepts communications and complaints from them, and also allows for an independent official to initiate prosecution. But, independent officials in international organizations always have a controversial position given the fact that they have autonomy and authority to act independently creating a probable threat to the national sovereignty of the member nations. In addition, here the statute also had the proposal to keep the court under the purview of a political institution (Security Council) which was also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even when in the initial 4 years of the court, it was cluttered with 1,732 communications from 132 countries related to situations in 139 countries. The DRC was the first country against which the prosecutor used his proprio motu powers to initiate an investigation, although DRC then referred itself to the court. Seven years later, the prosecutor actually used his powers against Kenya to finally be able to initiate an investigation and put to use the trigger mechanism. The seeds of 2007 were seeped deep back during the general elections of 2002 in Kenya, where the National Rainbow Coalition (NaRC) led by Mwai Kibaki of Party of National Unity (PNU) promised the homeless and unemployed a chance of being heard and also guaranteed a police reform if they would have been brought ... • 3. Themes Of Gandhi In Hind Swaraj Many of the themes explored by Gandhi in Hind Swaraj are directly or indirectly influenced by these texts. I lay no claim to originality. They have been formed after reading several books. For instance, Gandhi s explanation of colonialism is built upon Tolstoy s Letter to a Hindoo where he argues that it is not the English who have enslaved the Indians, but the Indians who have enslaved themselves. Similarly, an uncompromising critique of industrial culture, the hallmark of Gandhian thought, is derived from Ruskin, Tolstoy and many other writers. Further, Maine s contention, that Indians were inheritors of a civilization that had representative institutions but destroyed by the new utilitarian state, was used by Gandhi to point out the superiority of ... Eastern (mostly Indian) sources include major ancient religious texts, not necessarily Hindu (like Gita, Tulsidas Ramayana etc.) On the surface, Hind Swaraj is primarily a critique of modern civilization, a civilization only in name . Critical commentators like Bhikhu Parekh and Raghavan Iyer perceive it in this way. Hind Swaraj, as Tridip Suhrud sees it, is philosophically located at a fleeting, tantalizing moment in human history when, out of the two modes of life and thought that were present simultaneously modern and a modern (a modern was not anti modern) it was still possible to follow the latter or, in other words, to conceive life outside the realm of the modern universe. It is this latter mode of thought that forms the bedrock of Hind Swaraj because Gandhi believed that modern civilization was built upon denial of a fundamental possibility, that of knowing oneself. As indicated in the above chart, Jack is displaying all the behaviour expected for this stage of development (from 6 12 months), and accordingly, as related to attachment, he was friendly with me as long as mom was close, and vigilant in ensuring he was always aware of her location. The fact that Alice is able to soothe Jack quickly and consistently and that he is able to adjust to a new stranger so well points to development of the confidence that Vera Fahlberg (2012) maintains in her text, A Child s Journey through Placement, as intrinsically tied to secure attachment to a primary attachment object ... • 6. The History Of Atomic Structure Eliza Abrams Mrs. Baldwin Honors Chem â…˜ 24 November 2015 The History of Atomic Structure For many years Greek philosophers were intrigued by the question of what matter consists of(Lucretius 31). In the fifth century BC, Democritus was the first philosopher to come up with a coherent atom theory. Based upon the reasoning that a stone can be split in half an infinite number of times, he hypothesized that at some point the stone would be too small for the eye to see. Democritus categorized such miniscule fragments of matter as atomos . Without experimental evidence, Democritus guessed that atoms of all shapes are in continual motion. Such motion affords the possibility of collisions in which atoms could attract or repel. Alterations in matter could be counted for by these collisions. Democritus s original atomic theory had little impact on the world for many years, due to its lack of evidence, and was rejected by another renowned philosopher, Aristotle ( Ancient Atomic Theory ). Following Democritus, Aristotle brought an opposing view on matter. Aristotle correctly claimed that there are three states of matter, solid, liquid, and gas. Additionally, he made the proposition that all matter springs from the four elements, earth, air, fire and water. Similarly to Democritus, Aristotle had no experimental evidence. Democritus s and Aristotle s theories differ in that Democritus stated that matter exists in atoms in a void, while Aristotle stated that all matter stems from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Through social programming such as, HIV education courses, economic opportunities through small businesses, and safe injection sites this study will look towards a correlation between these attributes and a decline in high risk behaviors thus preventing the risk of HIV infection. The concept of risk environment plays a role in the increase in risk of infection as it is regarded as the space, whether social or physical, in which a variety of factors exogenous to the individual interact to increase vulnerability to HIV (Roy et. Al, 2011). Many studies of vulnerable individuals such as injection drug users, sex workers, and the homeless have shown that these factors have a significant influence on their health since they shape daily risk taking (Roy et. • 8. Is Sexual Selection Within Male Pharomachrus Mocinno... Title: Is Sexual Selection In Male Pharomachrus mocinno favoured by Longer Plume Tail Length due to Increase in Colour? Introduction: The Pharomachrus mocinno has evolved many behavioural and physical traits as a result of adaptation to the current environment and lifestyle it leads, however this proposal will focus on the unusual plume tail length of the male P. mocinno. This particular species habitat requires nests as high as 22 meters in rotting trees (Seigfried et al. 2010). Therefore, the function of the feathers would typically be assumed to enhance flight, as that would make sense as a useful function in this scenario due to the high elevation. Surprisingly, however, the long length of the plume tail actually decreases the speed of the male bird due to the drag force of air (Norberg 1995) and requires it to drop backward off the branches before being able to fly forward normally (LaBastille et al. 1972). With such issues with the long plume tails, would sexual selection really be in this traits favour? In a study done on the widowbird such was the case; males with longer plumes were mated the most (Andersson 1982). However, the widowbird is completely black (including its tail), while in the case of Pharomachrus mocinno it is a very colourful bird. Previous studies also have shown, that the bright reflective colours on the male s bodies help in attracting females (LaBastille et al. 1972). Therefore, it s possible that the long length of the P. mocinno male s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sweatshops provide poor people in developing countries with better outcomes than the alternative of criminal activity (child and adult prostitution). Employable for only part of the year, outside of the planting and harvesting seasons, there is little for them to do and they stream into cities looking for work. • 24. The Cause Of Violence And Crime In America Violence has a deep history since the creation of human civilizations on earth. There is no definite factor that decides the cause of violence. Per the psychologists, it is in the childhood of a person that dictates his interest in violence. This causes the debate of nature vs. nurture. Violence can be caused by influence of both. Violence is also caused by societal conflicts especially in the area of government. Citizens of a nation often do not have say in the policies of their government and may return to violence to show their anger. Violence is a powerful way to show strength and intimidate others. Most people commit violence because of their inability to understand why life isn t fair at all times. For them committing a violent crime proves to be their own sense of satisfaction that they have done something to change what bothers them. Other times, it is the helpless victim of cultural stereotypes and societal dispositions that commits violence merely by being manipulated. Big organizations such as mafia gangs commit violence for money and security. Thus, there isn t just one simple cause/reasons individuals or organizations commit violence. It is often a combination of multiple factors. 2. How can we reduce violent crime in America? In recent years, America has become prone to violence. Quite knowingly, much power presents the threat of corruption and desolation in any situation. Sylvia Plath and Markus Zusak both challenge the idea that patriarchal standards within society influence the protagonist s fate in their texts. Sylvia Plath s Lady Lazarus is a reaction to the oppressive nature of the patriarchy surrounding Plath during the early sixties. Lady Lazarus reveals Plath s feelings of resentment in this semi autobiographical poem that grew from her feeling trapped in a cyclical and oppressive environment. Plath employs allusion to the biblical tale of Lazarus where she describes a, grave cave where she felt, at home. These four components represent the acronym PICO (Stone, 2002). As the elements of PICO become more precise, the review of the literature becomes more focused. For example, elements of PICO may translate into medical subject headings that can direct searches of the literature (Stone, 2002). Also, clinical questions for specific patient populations can be identified so that relevant information can be found on databases and Internet search engines easily (Adams, 2012).
