Genetic Testing and Screening Essay
Many things are changing at an extremely rapid rate in our society. The new advances in the areas of
science and biotechnology are raising many ethical and moral dilemmas for everyone. No one will be
left unaffected. Everyone will have to make a decision and take a stand on these issues. I will discuss
advancements of genetic screening and testing. The first step to any ethical problem is to understand
the topic. It is difficult to formulate accurate ideas without knowledge about the topic, so first I will
provide a little background information on genetic screening. I will then point out some of the areas of
controversy associated with genetic screening, and finally I will discuss my view on the topic.
Genetic screening can be used to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In some ways genetic screening will become similar to a fortuneteller a scientific fortuneteller. This
new information will have some obvious benefits. We will now be able to predict if we will be
susceptible to a certain disease and consequently take more preventative measures against that disease.
Treatment for some genetic diseases may also become available and we will be able to treat that
disease. With our new technology, we may be able to treat problems in utero before a child is even
born. This new information may seem like a great benefit up front, but there are many areas of ethical
and moral concern that need to be addressed. What kind of decisions is this new information going to
call on us to make? Who will have access to this information?
One of the main concerns to genetic screening is that it will lead to new forms of discrimination. This
new discrimination could arise in a number of areas. One area that worries many groups is
discrimination in the workplace based on genetic predisposition. Could or would employers use
genetic information when hiring employees? Munson points out a specific case when this may happen.
Ten percent of the population has a variant form of a gene, which produces AHH (amyl hydrocarbon
hydroxylase) an enzyme that breaks down hydrocarbons in pollutants. The variant form of the gene
produces the enzyme in excessive amounts that react with hydrocarbons and produce carcinogenic
substances. These people would

Negative Impact On Social Media
Social Media today seems like it is always compared to a drug, a lot of people are addicted to it.
Considering where technology is right now we aren t addicted to Social Media, it just turns out to be
our daily essential for information that we crave for. Technology has unlocked faster communication
and the ability to spread information quickly. Which allows us to connect with the world and discover
other people s perspectives, creating a more diverse view and opinion of topics and information. In
addition, not all information is truthful, especially the widespread of fabricated news, but with
technology and social media a lot of people can fact check information instead of getting news from
mainstream media outlets that alter news to acquire more revenue. And if Social Media is so bad, why
does everyone still use it everyday? With all that said, I think that social media impacts people,
especially Millennials more positive than negative considering that it is a powerful tool that almost
everyone can use. A plethora of information with diverse perspectives at your fingertips and accessing
it in an instant. I believe that smartphones and computers is a growing standard among Millennials
now for daily living, people can find out about news and information all around the world in an instant
at the comfort of their home. In the article How the Internet is Loosening Our Grip on the Truth , the

I Am A Film Producer Who Has Recently Acquired The Rights
I am a film producer who has recently acquired the rights to She Unames Them by Ursula K. LeGuin.
She Unames Them features the Genesis character Eve as the main character. The short story is divided
into two sections. The first section is written in third person and is a detailed narrative of a multitude
of animals essentially giving up their names upon the command of Eve. It describes the response of
each animal in this matter. For instance, the story describes the elder female yaks holding a council
meeting to discuss whether they found it fit to rid themselves of their name. They also described the
issue with household pets that wished to keep the name their master gave them. The text states, But as
soon as they understood that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This us significant because in Genesis 3:20 it says, And Adam called his wife s name Eve; because she
was the mother of all living. Therefore, by giving up her title of mother of all living, Eve removes her
station as above the animals and makes herself one with them. Another reason this is significant is
because in Genesis 2:23 it is written, And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my
flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore, she is disconnecting
herself from Adam. She is no longer being called woman, which is taken out of man. She is unique
from all creation yet she is also connected with all of creation. Accordingly, the story implies the only
way to find true spirituality is by making yourself one with nature. This is implied through the
narrative of Adam searching for the key to the garden of Eden. This is ironic because he is essentially
looking for a material object to enter a spiritual place. However, by abandoning her human nature and
finding oneness with nature, Eve has managed to find Eden in the world outside of the garden. Then
when Adam asks what time dinner is, which is important because cooking dinner is often considered a
womanly task. Eve does not know how to answer this questions. This shows she has forsaken what
Adam believes her role job is as a woman in favor of joining the animals. This moral is important
because it supports humanism and nature. It also

The Man Who Would Be King Analysis
Rudyard Kipling s novella, The Man Who Would Be King , is about two English men, Daniel Dravot
and Peachey Carnehan, who are cons artists that live in India with the goal of becoming the kings of
Kafiristan. The story is told through a narrator, an Englishman, that stumbles upon the two characters
through a strange interaction at a train station. After meeting up with the narrator at his job, Dravot
and Carnehan gather as much information as they can about Kafiristan and head off in disguise for
their journey to becoming kings. There are many similarities regarding how and why the British
Empire and Dravot and Carnehan came to imperialize these Indian countries. Throughout the whole
novella, Kipling uses the story as a way to display ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kipling also showed how the English empire thought they were superior to the natives of India and
Kafiristan in multiple ways. Dravot would compliment the natives he was ruling over by calling them
English, These men aren t Indian, they are English. This implies that being English is the right way to
act. Kipling also displayed English superiority when Dravot refused to listen to the people he was
ruling when they protested against him marrying a woman that was not a god. Kipling too thought that
the British gained power in a corrupt manner. This was revealed when Dravot claimed to be friends
with one of the gods the Kafiristan people worshipped. Both Dravot and Carnehan took advantage of
the natives in a fraudulent manner as did the British. Kipling further showed how he thought the style
the British were ruling was poor because both Dravot and Carnehan mimicked British methods. Both
characters created a contract, modernized the country they took over, and brought new rules, just like
the English. In both the story and reality, the people rebel against the English to reclaim their
Independence. Through symbolism, Kipling uses each character from the novella to display some
aspect of the British Empire in a way that reflected his views. Carnehan represents the expanding
aspect of British imperialism. Carnehan actually wants to grow Kafiristan and care for the people.
Dravot represents the monarchy itself by having a

Amitav Ghosh the Hungry Tide and the Interesting Narrative...
Both The Hungry Tide and The Interesting Narrative Of Olaudah Equiano are tales of sociological
hardships combined with a life bound to the sea. The ocean plays a significant role in the text offering
disempowerment to some whilst empowering others. In The Interesting Narrative the slave trade was
in full swing and a capitalist attitude heavily dominates the text, whilst in The Hungry Tide capitalism
plays a smaller role and the humanitarian backdrop of the story is a more central theme. In this essay I
will draw into focus the various ways in which the ocean is represented as empowering and
disempowering to the lives of characters looking at them as they develop through the text and
contrasting their empowerment against that of others. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To attempt to leave the island would likely result in death and the most fearful disempowerment
possible. Hywel Dix argues that with no money, power, or political influence, they are simply treated
as objects to be shunted from one location to another. [9] Dix is here arguing that the weak become
weaker at the hands of a greater force, which is exactly what happens to the settlers. The ocean is
therefore seen as disempowering at the hands of the powerful government forces. This use of the
ocean as a way of the strong disempowering the weak is also seen in The Interesting Narrative. In the
same way the ocean is used to imprison the settler s, the Africans find themselves similarly imprisoned
by it on board their ship. Equiano makes a direct reference to his ship as being like a prison; I was
ready to curse the tide that bore us, the gale that wafted my prison. [10] The ocean is much like the
police controlled perimeter that keeps them captive with the looming threat of death for those who
attempt to escape. Gilbert C. Klingel supports this notion of the ocean as being like that of a prison; it
is a prison without bars or cells, the only walls are the lines of gleaming surf. [11] Much like the
settlers, Equiano is powerless to resist and is therefore kept captive by the ocean. In exactly the same

Instances where Music Has Been Influenced by Politics
Music has always been tied to what has been happening to in the world around its creator. This is true
for classical music, as well as popular (pop) music. Pop music is music that is mass marketed and
shared primarily by recordings. The Emergence of pop music occurred because of the invention of
three recording devices, the phonograph cylinder (1878), the flat gramophone record (1887), and the
Player piano (1896). Musicians like James Reese Europe had to find ways to allow himself (and other
African Americans) able to perform, as well as get his music heard. Shostakovich had to work within
Stalin s Social Realism. Ravel s La Valse is a reaction the War in Europe. In many ways has music has
been influenced by the politics of the time these are the three composers I am going to focus on. James
Reese Europe lived from 1880 1919. He studied music theory and violin from the Assistant Director
of the United States Marine Corps Band. When he was 22 he moved to New York, where he was able
to get some work but not a whole lot. This was due to his African heritage. So, he responded by
creating the Clef Club. The Clef Club was a multipurpose organization; it served as social club, a
booking agency, and a trade union for African American musicians in New York City. Through this
club, he was able to stage concerts at Carnegie Hall with 125 piece orchestras. In 1913 the Castles,
who were a married couple who watered down the elaborate ballroom dances to a minimum number

Civil Rights Case Study
Throughout American history the United States Supreme Court has seen a multitude Civil Rights
cases. Criminal Rights is the branch of Civil Rights cases that will be evaluated in this paper. Criminal
Rights cases date back to the early twentieth century, and the majority of Criminal Rights cases are
over 5th, 6th and 14th Amendment rights. These cases are important to the public because anyone
could commit a crime. The people of the U.S deserve rights under any circumstances even if they are
criminals. Regarding the issue of Criminal Rights, the US Supreme Court remained mostly
conservative as to how criminals in trial should be treated. The continuing issue is examined through

Arizona (1963). Ernesto Miranda was arrested in his house and brought to the police station where he
was questioned by police officers in connection with a kidnapping and rape. Despite two hours of
police interrogation, Miranda was never advised of his right to attorney and defended himself in court.
The jury found Miranda guilty. The Supreme Court argued if the Fifth Amendment s protection
against self incrimination extends to the police interrogation of a suspect (Oyez). Chief Justice Earl
Warren delivered the majority opinion that the suspect must be aware that anything he says can be
used against him in a court of law and that if at any point her requests an attorney there will be no
further questioning until the attorney arrives (Oyez). In comparison to the precedent cases Miranda v.
Arizona (1963) stayed true to original court rulings. All three court cases ruled that a defendant has a
right to an attorney and must be provided one if they can not provide one on their own. The only
difference with Miranda v. Arizona (1963) is the court ruled the defendant must be read their Miranda
Rights, or their right to remain silent before interrogation with an attorney present. The addition of
Miranda Rights to establish guidelines for how detained suspects should be given their

Staples.com s competitive advantage in the online marketplace is Staples brand name. The analysis
team correctly points out that 75% of the market is being served by generic retailers, so that
Staples.com can use Staples brand name to better reach into that portion of the market. Staples has an
established customer network under its brand name from which Staples.com can gain wallet share.
Staples.com also has Staples customer demand information and consumer feedback databases. The

customer service systems ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The critique team would add that there is likely to be cannibalization of the catalogue business
because the models are so closely related. Staples should commission a study to find estimated rates of
cannibalization so that an orderly response can be implemented.
The analysis team is also correct that Staples.com should focus on market share over wallet share. The
market is very large and growing fast. The critique team would add that by capturing online market
share ahead of competitors, Staples.com can reduce the cost of overcoming competitor customer
loyalty in the online market. The switching cost will still be absent for many customers that are new to
the internet office supplies market.
The critique team would add that Staples catalogue business increased wallet share by a factor of
three. This is the very business that will likely be cannibalized in the ordinary course of business by
opening the online store. Staples should not spend too much money on trying to increase wallet share
when it will likely be transitioning between business units. However, Staples should still take the
opportunity to market services as a way to expand customer wallet. All marketing expenditures on
promoting new services market share will spill over into wallet share. Any wallet share campaign on
services should be lower priority than market share marketing.
3. Do you think that Staples.com

The Bible And The Holy Bible
Any Christian who reads the Holy Bible and studies to Bible knows many of Jesus s as parables. The
new testament is filled with numerous amount of parables which seem to be stories that Jesus told in
order to get his message across. The word parable comes from παροιμιαν which means a figure of
speech., and this is the way that Jesus spoke. I have spoken to you in figures of speech; the hour is
coming when I shall no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but tell you plainly of the Father.
(John 16:25) When Jesus spoke to the people this is how he spoke to them However, while it seems
that these were simple stories it is apparent from the reading that Jess s parables were methodically
thought through with each being very precisely accurate in the structure of the stories. Moreover,
followers can seem to have a different meaning to these parables because depending on the situation
and relationship with Jesus that a particular person had it is possible for the interpretation may not
match the next persons. Yet, Jesus has used these analogy to illustrate his point, people of Jesus time
may have understood him better when the parables could be related to their every day lives. In the new
testament of the Bible there is an astounding 46 parables. Of the 46 parables in the bible some of those
are repeated within the other gospel but one which is unique to all the others is one parable the good
Samaritan And these were important information that was needed in order for the

Presidents Of Washington And Lincoln
Every four years, for decades and decades, U.S. citizens have been faced with the challenge of
deciding which presidential candidate they ll vote for. Sometimes presidents with severe deficiencies
in character have been elected, sometimes others lacking leadership skills and the ability to tackle the
problems and difficulties posed by the presidency. However, there have also been some presidents
who, though not without their flaws, have remained as a model of an ideal president to many people.
Washington and Lincoln are two of these presidents, who exemplified many admirable qualities as
leaders.
This year, voters will again have to choose who they think would be the most qualified candidate. But
before this can be determined, it has to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, ideally, the president should not be someone who primarily desires the fame and power
that comes with the presidency. Instead, they should be someone who truly desires the good of the
country, even if it will make them less popular. Take George Washington, for example. He was already
a respected and well liked leader, but he did not want to assume the position of president. In his
inaugural speech, he said, On the one hand, I was summoned by my Country, whose voice I can never
hear but with veneration and love, from a retreat which I had chosen with the fondest predilection,
and, in my flattering hopes, with an immutable decision, as the asylum of my declining years...
(Washington). He then went on to express how insufficient he felt for the task of being president.
It is common for presidents to arrive as potential candidates after engaging in other major
undertakings, political or otherwise. The third qualification for a president, then, is that they should
have an honorable reputation and past history. Tied in with this, is the criterion that the president
should have had prior positive leadership experience, where they acted honorably and did not do
things such as use bribery or engage in questionable practices. It should also be easy for them to gain
the respect of the people.
The president should also be a good problem solver, should be knowledgeable in the laws and policies
of the country,

Uncle Sam Nickname
On this day in 1813, the United States gets its nickname, Uncle Sam. The name is linked to Samuel
Wilson, a meat packer from Troy, New York, who supplied barrels of beef to the United States Army
during the War of 1812.Wilson (1766 1854) stamped the barrels with U.S. for United States, but
soldiers began referring to the grub as Uncle Sam s. The local newspaper picked up on the story and
Uncle Sam eventually gained widespread acceptance as the nickname for the U.S. federal government.
In the late 1860s and 1870s, political cartoonist Thomas Nast (1840 1902) began popularizing the

Understanding Alzheimer s Disease
What is Alzheimer s disease? How does it affect our lives? In today s world, people may have a family
member or simply a friend that has been diagnosed with Alzheimer s disease. It is essential that people
are educated about the definition, origin, effect, and treatment of Alzheimer s disease because it is so
much more than just memory loss.
First, people should know the definition of Alzheimer Disease (AD). Alzheimer Disease is one form of
Dementia. It affects memory, thinking, and behavior. Dementia is loss of brain function which occurs
with certain diseases (Alzheimer Disease: Causes).
The exact cause of Alzheimer Disease is not known. In AD, the neurons start to die with tangles,
meaning the disease attacks the nerve cells damaging ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People with AD endure challenges in planning and problem solving, as well as difficulty completing
familiar tasks at home, work or leisurely activities such as confusing time and places. There are three
stages of AD, mild, moderate, and severe. Mild AD is more of misplacing things, talking in repetition
of yourself, and changes in personality. In addition, when AD is only in the mild stage, people have
trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships, new problems with words in speaking
or writing, poor judgement, withdrawal from work or social activities, and changes in mood. In
moderate Alzheimer s Disease, damage occurs in areas of the brain that control language, reasoning,
sensory processing, and conscious thought. It is the longest of the three stages. This stage can last for
many years. As the disease progresses, it typically gets difficult for victims of AD to recognize the
most familiar faces, such as, friends and family. Last, People with severe Alzheimer s cannot
communicate and are completely dependent on others for their care (Symptoms, Diagnosis, and
Treatment). Some symptoms of severe Alzheimer s are weight loss, seizures, skin infections, groaning,
moaning, or grunting. More severe symptoms are difficulty swallowing, increased sleeping, and
lacking control of the bowel and bladder (Alzheimer Disease: Causes). Near the end, the person may
be in bed most or all of the time as the body shuts down (Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment).
When someone develops AD their brain, actually starts to shrink and form plaque (Alzheimer s

Hot Potatoes Answers
The program Hot Potatoes allows teachers to create interactive, Web based exercises that students can
access from any computer which is connected to the Internet and which has standard Web browser
installed.
It is comprised of six different modules or potatoes which include six program s templates to design
activities. They consist of JMatch, JQuiz, JCross, JCloze, JMix, and JBC. Each of them creates a type
of exercise: matching/ordering exercise, short answers exercise, crosswords, gap fill exercise, jumbled
sentence exercise, and multiple choice quiz.
In the JMatch, students have to pair items in one column with those of the other column. When
designing it, teachers can introduce a list of words in the target language and the corresponding ...

They have to drag the words and put them in the right order. This is a great activity to practice
sentence structure (e.g.: conditional sentences, inversion, and so on).
Finally, in the JBC, participants have to choose the correct answer for each question. For each of the
questions, teachers can create as many answer options as they like and as many correct answers as
they consider (e.g.: doesn t have to/ does not have to/ needn t/ doesn t need to/ does not need to).
These activities can stand alone or be linked to other exercises to form a sequence of activities (Winke
and MacGregor, 2001). If educators want to create a cycle of exercises, they can use the Masher. All
the exercises included can focus on one topic and can be used to revise the content of a specific unit
(e.g.: the climate change).
Once teachers have created their exercises, they can either upload them to the website or use them
offline. Hotpot activities can also be added to Moodle which provides full reporting. When
Hotpotatoes activities are completed on the website or offline, teacher cannot view their students

Introduction In 2006, the United Nations Children s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health
Organization (WHO) 1 published the report, Pneumonia: The forgotten killer of children which
identified pneumonia as one of the world s leading causes of childhood mortality accounting for one
in five under five deaths. The fourth Millennium Development Goal (MDG) from the 2000 summit is
to reduce under five mortality rate by two thirds by 20151. With its significant contribution to under
five mortality, reduction of the childhood pneumonia mortality is essential to achieving this goal. Over
the last two decades there has been significant progress in reduction of childhood pneumonia deaths
with 58% less deaths occurring globally in 20132. However, pneumonia still accounts for about 19%
of childhood under five deaths and contributes significantly to morbidity and disability among
children globally. Majority of these pneumonia related deaths occur in developing countries and are
concentrated in a few countries1,2. In 2013, over half of the under five pneumonia deaths occurred in
10 countries located in sub Saharan Africa, South Asia and South east Asia1,2. Successful
interventions for the reduction in childhood pneumonia mortality include: protecting child health by
ensuring adequate nutrition and hygiene, prevention of pneumonia by immunization against causative
pathogens, reducing indoor air pollution and optimizing access to prompt treatment of pneumonia1 3.

The novel Hidden Figures, written by Margot Lee Shetterly consists of a prologue, twenty three
captivating and without a doubt inspiring chapters, and a reflective epilogue, detailing the lives of
Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson. For me, the most inspirational and
resonating passage is found in the epilogue. As Shetterly is reflecting on Katherine Johnson s
aeronautical achievements she questions, What could be more American than the story of a gifted little

While I am attending West Virginia University, I will be studying to complete a doctorate of pharmacy
degree. Before I can be admitted into the program, I must complete several rigorous and demanding
pre requisite courses. As I complete these courses, I will keep in mind that success and consistency are
a package deal. If I want to be a competitive candidate during the pharmacy school application
process, it is crucial for me to be consistent in my scholastic endeavors. To accomplish this, I must
present my best self always, show up to lectures and to the laboratory setting with a positive attitude
and a mind that is ready to learn, prepare myself for quizzes and tests, and always give my best effort.
The women in Hidden Figures exemplify the relationship between consistency and success. Each day,
Katherine, Dorothy, and Mary arrived at Langley Institute and worked diligently. Their consistent hard
work and dedication to NASA s mission led to promotions and many successes. If I want to be
noticed, I must be consistent, even when no one is watching. One of the recurring ideals presented in
Hidden Figures is sisterhood. The novel demonstrates the necessity of dependable friendships and

The Stock Market And Stock Exchange
This paper will encompass the importance of the U.S stock market/stock exchange versus the Chinese
stock market/ stock exchange, with a brief introduction about how each stock market/stock exchange
came into existence, the importance of each stock market/stock exchange, how the U.S and Chinese
manage their stock markets/stock exchange, how corporations are appointed plus the rules and
regulations. This will also entail random facts about each stock market/stock exchange. Stock markets
are like hitting a royal flush, if the price of your stocks goes up, you win; if it drops, you lose! The
stock market, also known as the fairness market, is one in which shares are owned by companies and
their shareholders. The companies that are on the stock market, its stocks are issued and traded
publicly, through either exchanges or over the counter markets. The stock market is considered to be
one of the most critical components of a gratuitous market economy that provides companies with
access to dominance in exchange for giving investor s the opportunity to have some type of possession
of the company. The stock market gives those the power to invest monies, and to capitalize on their
gains. This in return can bring about wealth to some without having to take a financial risk in starting
up a new business.

First Battle Of The Marne Chapter Summaries
The book starts out with an introduction that is a few pages long that includes information on the first
and second Marnes attack, a map of the region, explains what countries were involved at this
particular time, key leaders, and provided some much needed background details pre battle. It would
take the combined efforts of French, British, American, and two Italian divisions to defeat the German
offensive. Chapter one starts out talking about the First Battle of the Marne in 1914 and how
successful the Allied forces were. The battle took place in the beautiful Marne River Valley, it was
known for its famous champagne and breathtaking land views. This First Battle immediately obtained
an important status with the French and British people because it was the largest battle ever fought,
had more than 2 million men, and stretched more than 160 miles in length. It is said that, ... Show

Neiberg wrote the Second Battle of the Marne that covers this specific battle that took place in World
War I. The book offers great detail on the battle with different points of view from all the countries
that were involved. There are several diary clippings, commentary from several different historians,
and accounts of specific attacks and counterattacks that happened within the battle as well. To write
the book Neiberg used several primary sources, which enhanced the overall detail of the book. There
were a few parts that were confusing in the beginning of the book where he compares the First Battle
of the Marne to the second and how the Armies and countries were different in their techniques, skills,
and weaponry but its hard to depict which battle he is talking about at times. Overall, I liked the detail
in the chapters and that the author did add commentary and not just fact after fact. I also liked the he

How To Write A Letter From A Patriot
June 29, 1863 Dear Emily, Please forgive my messy handwriting, for all of the lights are packed away.
Tomorrow we are leaving Cashtown and marching into Gettysburg to find supplies. Colonel Smith is
still being tended to by the surgeons. I m secretly hoping for him not to get better. I m excited, to fight
for my country, for what s right, and for my people and to prove I m an honorable leader. This could,
hopefully, improve my rank in the army. I don t trust Smith, I feel as if he may be a double agent . He
used to ask me to deliver notes to strangers, or cover for him when he had to meet someone. One time,
I went into his tent and three of his slaves were sitting in there, reading through the battle plans and
eating our food. Some of the soldiers didn t get anything to eat that night and here these disgusting
blacks were eating our food! How dare they! So I punished them like any true Confederate man would
do. Then I went to talk to Smith about this, and he kept trying to change the subject. Major Green just

men to go back and investigate. His best men included me, but none of my superiors. How

Analysis Of William Wordsworth s Poetry
As this question states, William Wordsworth s poetry demonstrates nature poet, real language of men,
spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings, and emotion recollected in tranquility. The first is the
easiest to indemnify. In Wordsworth s poem Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of
Early Childhood , there are several lines that depict nature. An example is the line, The Rainbow
comes and goes, / And lovely is the Rose. (Wordsworth 10 11). In the preface to Lyrical Ballads,
Wordsworth defines real language of men as a line or a sequence of lines that are written in the
language of prose rather than the poetic metre normally associated with poetry (Preface to Lyrical
Ballads n.d.). An example of this would be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second symbol is the death fires (Coleridge 128). In the footnotes, death fires are said to be an
atmospheric electricity on a ship s mast or rigging (Greenblatt 447). The Merriam Webster dictionary

believed these were signs that foretold of death or disaster (Greenblatt 447). The third symbol is a
horned Moon, with one bright star / Within the nether tip (Coleridge 210 211). A moon coupled with a
lone star is another omen, the footnotes describe this as an omen of impending evil (Greenblatt 449).
By using these symbols Coleridge was letting his reader know that something bad was going to
happen in the near future.
The two hundred men on the ship died during the night as predicted by the evil omens; Four times
fifty living men, / ... / They dropped down one by one. (Coleridge 216 219). In line 231, [this] body

to the left talk about Life in Death and confirm that the sailor is not a spirit; (Greenblatt 449). The
seafarer was not allowed to die with his men, instead he is doomed to wander from land to land
somewhere between life and death, continually repeating his story (Coleridge 586).

Persuasive Essay On Bilingual Education
In 1967, a senator in Texas named Ralph Yarborough introduced the Bilingual Education Act. Through
this act, the federal government was to provide funds to schools to have bilingual educational
programs. The act primarily focused on Spanish speaking children, but later was amended to benefit
other children as well (Glavin). Several states in the United States opposed bilingual education and in
2002, Initiative 31 was on the Colorado ballot. Initiative or Amendment 31, required schools to be
taught only in English (figure 1). Parents were given the option to request bilingual education, but it
would be extremely difficult for it to be accepted, due to schools having the right to deny their request.
Instead, non English speakers would be placed in an English immersion program. In this program,
students would be given a year to learn English and later move to a normal classroom ( Amendment
31 ). On November 5, 2002, the initiative was rejected by 55 percent (Benz 1). Considering the
rejection of the initiative, Colorado began adapting programs to assist English language learners
(ELLs). Nonetheless, dual language education remains highly controversial. While bilingual education
has many positive outcomes, we cannot ignore the fact that it is not 100 percent effective. Not every
child learns the same; therefore, bilingual education does not provide equal opportunities for
everyone. Instead of completely throwing bilingual education out the window, we should turn to
alternatives

Rhetorical Devices Used In A Change To Come By Gcse
Sam Cooke, A Change is Gonna Come
Heralded by many as the anthem to the Civil Rights Movement, A Change is Gonna Come by Sam
Cooke was and still is one of the most influential songs of all time. The song was originally released
in 1964 on the album Ain t That Good News , but was released again as a single eleven days after Sam
Cooke s untimely death on the 11th of December, 1964.
There is no other social movement so effected by pop culture in the last century than the black Civil
Rights Movement in America during the 1960s. The music at the time had political motivation and yet
it was still enjoyed widely as pop music. Sam Cooke was one of the few African American artists of

Then I go to my brother / And I say, Brother, help me please. / But he winds up knockin me / Back

force during their marches. The very people meant to protect and serve ended up being one of the

throughout, it is a song of hope. The famed lyrics; It s been a long, a long time coming / But I know a

The Effects of Forgiveness on Mental Health Essay
Forgiveness has been defined in many ways by psychologists and researchers with no one universal
definition. Hill (as cited in Maltby, Day and Mackaskill 2001) state that it is widely agreed that
forgiveness involves a willingness to abandon resentment, negative judgement and indifferent
behaviour towards the person who has hurt them Although research is recent, from the last 15 years, it
has helped develop our understanding of forgiveness . Research has shown that forgiveness gives
positive mental health and prevents the development of mental disorders such as anxiety, depression
and stress. Two major models of forgiveness are Enright s model and Worthington s (2001) pyramid

forgiveness can be given this will improve an individual s mental health as the model suggests and
empirical evidence proves support this from a series of studies which had consistent findings to
support the argument that forgiveness does indeed give improved mental health. Hebl and Enright

Research Paper On The Great San Francisco Earthquake
The great San Francisco Earthquake was a very deadly earthquake that occurred on April 18, 1906 at

Nevada. It broke the San Andreas fault, both north and south, 296 miles total. Fires occurred right
after the quake, and because the earthquake had broken most of the water pipes, the fires burned for
three days, causing around 28,000 buildings to burn down and more than 3,000 deaths. This caused
$500,000,000 ($500 million) in damages in 1906 currency. In our currency as of last year, this would

Science And Religion Research Paper
Today, it seems like science and religion are in a constant, bloody war with one another, similarly to
the on going war between the Palestinians and the Jews, but what are science and religion? Science is
the intellectual study of the structure and behavior of the world through observation and experiment.
Religion is the belief in a superior being or many superior beings. Although science and religion seem
like two diverse topics, the two methods of explanation are more alike than one would think, and both
of these things together complement each other to give us our modern technology and how we as a
society should use it. First, to explain how science and religion are similar, we have to look back in
time. Throughout our history and deep in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Without the contribution our religion institution provided us, we could still be stuck in a dark time
with a lack of advances in technological. The catholic church was the first place to allowed the
common folk (peasants) the luxury of books and education. Before the Catholic Church opened the
opportunity of education and books to the masses, education and books were strictly for the wealthy.
With the education provided by the catholic church, the people started to question things in their
environment. They also started pursuing answers to their questions away from text. People held
experiments and would document it carefully. An example of a person who did document his findings
is Roger Bacon. It was the curiosity of the common folk and the opportunity the Catholic Church gave
the common folk that helped to re birth science in Europe. This action made by the catholic church
changed the course of history, which gave European empires an opportunity to compete among the
hegemonic powers at the time (the Abbasid Empire), and brought Europe out of the gloomy Medieval
Era and into the beautiful Renaissance Era. To this day, the Catholic Church remains one of the main
contributors to educating the youth of the world and as a result, has a huge emphasis on science and
technology. The second clue to how these three big topics are closely related is in the nature of
science. Science is our explanation of the world backed up with experimentation and hard fact. Us

Market Entry Modes
International market entry modes allow firms to enter foreign markets and can choose the most
appropriate entry mode for their industry. After analysing market drivers, demand and consumer
behaviour, Pharmaceutical firms may choose the most strategic mode of entry to enter a market. The
market entry mode is strategic and is regarded as a major factor in the Internationalisation process
(Morschett et al.,2015, p.323). As illustrated below, the International market entry model outlines that
Pharmaceutical firms may enter foreign markets through Exports/Imports, Subsidiaries,
Mergers/Acquisitions, Joint ventures, or Licensing.

Joint Venture
A joint venture is characterised by the need to achieve a business transaction while remaining separate
from each other. Each firm maintains its resources and independence while engaging in an activity,
with the objective of achieving certain objectives. The need for joint ventures in the Pharmaceutical
industry may be characterised by the need to reduce high R D costs and by so doing, share costs
through common equity (Roijakkers Hagedoon,2005, p.8). Joint venture as a mode of market entry

Of the three poems to Anne Bradstreet s deceased grandchildren, In Memory of My Dear Grandchild
Anne Bradstreet is the longest. It s interesting that the longest is also written in memory of the
grandchild who shared her name. One would presumably be especially close to their namesake. The
first line of the poem sets the tone: With troubled heart and trembling hand I write. The younger Anne
s death has obviously affected Bradstreet in a deep way and it is easy to picture her writing these
words with a shaking hand and tears in her eyes. Perhaps seeing a child with her name die reminds
Bradstreet of her own mortality, as she is nearing the age of sixty. This grandchild also dies at the

according to what they will cost her emotionally. The line also reminds me of the phrase pay the price,
which means to suffer the consequences for risking something. In this case, the risk is becoming

Although the plaza has no formal seating, its low, dark green, polished granite north and south walls
are Park Avenue s most popular seating areas in good weather. The plaza has two rectangular
reflecting pools at its north and south ends that are filled with forests of Christmas trees during the

Resolving Small Business Disputes in New York
New York is home to thousands of business. Some are international corporations, others are local. In
New York, there are businesses in every industry, and, and some point, these businesses will face
disputes. For small businesses in New York particular, a business dispute can mean the end of the life
of the company, due to its tremendous expense and its potential to damage a business reputation in the
community. Fortunately, business disputes in small businesses do not always result in an expensive
lawsuit, and many are resolved without court assistance at all.
Every business, even the smallest ones, needs a plan in place for handling disputes. It is best for the
business owners and managers to create such a plan when there are no active conflicts within the
company. Each business should have a method for resolving customer complaints, disagreements
between employees, conflict with other companies, and so on. A business attorney is an excellent
resource for putting these plans into place. When conflict does arise, each party to the dispute will
understand how it will be resolved, providing a more efficient method of finalizing a disagreement.
It is essential to handle business disputes as soon as possible before they cause unnecessary animosity
and stress within the business. Businesses may

Laboratory 7: Environmental Effects on Enzyme Activity
BI 185 03
BY
Charlie Kane
10/24/17
Abstract
During this experiment we tested the effects that specific environmental conditions have on the
enzyme, peroxidase. Through this experiment we developed an understanding of enzymes and their
functions. By exposing the enzymes to different environments, we observed a changed in their
activity. In order for us to measure these changes we used the technique of spectrophotometry,
meaning we used a spectrophotometer, which measures the amount of light a chemical can absorb. In
our findings we discovered that certain environmental factors such as pH, temperature, boiling do
have an affect on enzyme activity. In conclusion the five null hypothesis were proven to be incorrect.
Introduction
Enzymes are biological catalysts that carry thousands of chemical reactions that occur in living cells.
They could be found in every living thing. Enzymes increase the rate at which chemical reactions
occur. A catalyst speeds up a chemical reaction by lowering the activation energy required. They are
proteins made up of several amino acids. Each enzyme is different due to its structure, it all has
different amino acid sequence. An enzymes ability to function depends on it s environment. These
factors include temperature, denaturation, pH, the size , the shape, and the amount of enzymes present.
Enzymes performs best at ph7. That is the same pH as blood , the more enzymes stray away from pH7
the weaker it becomes , the active site gets damaged. This makes the enzyme not active, no longer
functional. When it comes to temperature enzymes at a certain temperature have maximum activity.
As temperature increases the enzyme activity also increases. When enzymes reach their maximum
activity level and the temperature is still increasing it will start to decline (denaturation). The rate of
reaction also depends on how much enzymes are present. We tested 5 hypothesis which were the
amount of enzyme does not alter the rate of a reaction. pH does not influence the rate of an enzyme
reaction. Temperature does not influence the rate of an enzyme activity. Boiling an enzyme before a
reaction does not influence enzyme activity. The

Replicating Genetic Cloning to Produce Red Fluorescent Protein
Introduction:
Genetic engineering has been used by scientists to create proteins in different amounts to adapt
bacteria and now students will have the chance to learn and replicate different procedures (Amgen
Biotech Experience, 2015). One recent discovery was that because of genetic engineering you can
release insulin at your own free will through your phone. This was tested on a diabetic mouse that had
an implant that was shown with an LED light (Shao et al./Sci. Trans. Med. 2017).
One of the most important tools used in this lab is a micropipette. A micropipette is a device used to
transport different amounts of liquids into another compartment by means of dispensing it. ... Show

Add restriction buffer and the plasmids into two tubes labeled R+ and R , restriction enzymes into R+,
and distilled water into R . One thing to note is to mix after you add anything to tubes and once it is
finished let the two tubes spin in a microcentrifuge for about four seconds in order to fully mix it all.
After this, place the two tubes in a rack and incubate them in a water bath that is 37 degrees Celsius
for an hour and place them in a freezer that is 20 degrees Celsius. Lab 4A consists of using gel
electrophoresis to further examine the pARA R plasmid by viewing them in a DNA ladder. Start by
adding loading dye into the two tubes and centrifuging them for a few seconds. Before putting them in
the gel walls check to make sure it is in the negative side and not the positive side. Add buffer to cover
the walls and keep track of where you will add the R , R+, and ladder. It is very important to use new,
fresh tips and to add them very carefully. Once everything has been put in, cover the box and connect
the cables to the power supply in the correct order: black to black for negative and red to red for
positive. Turn the power on and put the voltage up to 130v 135v and let it set for 40 to 50 minutes. For
the first two to three minutes check to see if it is moving towards the positive side and if it isn t,
inform the instructor. This lab ends with the instructor providing a picture of how far the plasmids
went. Next for lab 5A is putting the plasmid into E.

Princess Zelda In Mortal Kombat
In a community, primarily filled with men were most video games are made by men, having female
video game characters are a rare sight. However, there are a few characters male gamers look up to,
almost as much as Solid Snake or Mario. Here are the top five greatest females in video games!
Number Five: Kitana, Mortal Kombat
Princess Kitana made her official debut in Mortal Kombat II, and has fought strong ever since.
Although 10,000 years old, she has the appearance of a young woman. Where she isn t all about hand
to hand combat, she relies on her Steel Fan weapon to tomahawk at other opponents making her one
of the most powerful females in Mortal Kombat, even more powerful than her evil twin Mileena.
Number Four: Princess Zelda, The Legend ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She s like Princess Peach, but way cooler, because she didn t just have a cry for help, but a woman
who is wise beyond her years. Although not playable in the Legend of Zelda franchise, she is a
character in Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros Brawl, and Super Smash Bros for 3DS.
Number Three: Madison Paige, Heavy Rain
Madison is one of the four protagonists in Heavy Rain, and is the most mysterious character in the
game. Her character is portrayed as a 27 year old female photographer and a journalist, who is noted
to have severe insomnia, believed to be from being a journalist in Iraq. Her strong personality truly
shined through while investigating The Origami Killer, and keeping Ethan level headed throughout the
game.
Number Two: Kairi, Kingdom Hearts.
Although ignored greatly in the franchise, Kairi is one of the most important characters in the game.
With Sora and Riku constantly going through different ways to save her, it was not only cute, but
implemented carefully in the game. Kairi alone, is a very annoying character, but on the contrary, her
plotline with Sora was a tearjerker, whether it be their goodbye, or even the montage at the end of the
first Kingdom

African American Vernacular English ( Aave )
There are several terms in my essay that I want to explain first. Dialect is a form Wang 3
of a language that is spoken in a particular area and that uses some of its own words, grammar, and
pronunciations. (Webster Dictionary) African American Vernacular English(AAVE) was often called
as Ebonics by Non linguists. The languages and dialects are noble, which should not be separated by
personal biased thought about the race, color, region, religion. However, in 1997, a nation wide debate
about Ebonics took place, which made people aware of the Black English for the first time. The fuse
of that case was the Oakland, Calif. School board, which claimed that Ebonics was a kind of
genetically based language. When they used the word genetically based , it means that the school
separated the African American students from the regular students in a biased way by genetically
reason, which like separate the black people and white people. The school even presented their
program and funds from the local government about the bilingual education for the Ebonics students
which intended to teach these English speaking students Standard English . It showed that they didn t
consider the Ebonics as a dialect of English, but a literally separated language. The people in public
made different reactions to that matter, in addition, not only the linguists, but also the Ebonics
speakers, the educators and

My Experience At Bmw s Playground Essay
This summer we had the chance to spend some time in Europe. One of our stopping points was
Munich. Needless to say we relished in the opportunity to play in BMW s playground. As you will
read below, we are massive car enthusiasts, so you can imagine our excitement in visiting BMW s
heartland! We were like kids in a candy shop ogling and drooling at the new toys, new cars, and the
latest and greatest.
For those that don t know, let me give you a brief history lesson on both myself and Chris. I have
ALWAYS had a passion for cars. There is just something so sexy about cars, the lines, the power, the
way they make you feel...if you are a car person, you know what I mean and how I am feeling even
typing this. Let s put it this way, when my family went to buy a car, they took me, the little cute little
blonde versus one of my 3 brothers. I knew more about the cars than the sales person. Chris has been
around the car world his entire life. His father had a dealership, and Chris followed suit. He worked at
a Ford dealership; then shortly was recruited to run a Cadillac store. From there, he was once again
pursued open and own his own Infiniti dealership. Pretty much, we love nice luxurious cars!
As I stated in our very 1st meeting, I NEVER want anyone to be that person that is simply nodding
along and having absolutely no idea what is going on and all kinds of confused, I want to start with the
basics of BMW and then dive into why they are so successful. I think we all can

Knee Injury Prevention and Conditioning Essay
Knee Injury Prevention and Conditioning An estimated 50 million Americans have suffered or are
suffering knee pain or injuries. Most of these pains, sprains, and strains could probably have been
avoided with proper conditioning (Fox, 147). I have had knee pain since my freshmen year of high
school and have finally taken the initiative to find some exercises that will help ease this pain, and
build muscle strength in the surrounding areas to avoid another possible injury. Getting the support
muscles of my legs in shape is one good way to lower the risk of knee injury. Therefore, a good
conditioning program is needed. Exercises are certainly one answer, but all too often people consider
exercise and activity as being synonymous. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Stretching must be part of the total regimen. Focusing on stretching the hamstring muscles very well is
a good way to help prevent knee injuries. In particular, increasing hamstring flexibility takes some
pressure off of the kneecap. Furthermore, the end of activity stretch has been shown to virtually
eliminate postexercise muscle problems. Strengthening exercises are very important in preventing
injury, especially to the knee. Most of the protection afforded the knee comes from the powerful
quadriceps muscles, the hamstrings, and the calf muscles. These muscles control the movement of the
knee. If they do not have proper tension, the control of the joint will be lost. When these muscles are
weak, the knee is not only unprotected, it has to assume a much greater load and this can be painful.
Strengthening will also increase endurance. When I suffer knee pain midway through a busy day, I do
two simple exercises: (1) Straight leg raises from a sitting position; (2) while sitting with my leg
straight out, I tighten my leg muscles for a slow five count, then flex and repeat. See Appendix. Knee
pain doesn t have to keep a person from climbing stairs, or shopping with friends. Preliminary data
suggested that when 30 people with osteoarthritis of the knee, a common cause of pain, followed an at
home strength training program, they averaged a 37% reduction in pain and an 82% increase in
strength of the affected leg. Strengthening the muscles around the

  • 2. Genetic Testing and Screening Essay Many things are changing at an extremely rapid rate in our society. The new advances in the areas of science and biotechnology are raising many ethical and moral dilemmas for everyone. No one will be left unaffected. Everyone will have to make a decision and take a stand on these issues. I will discuss advancements of genetic screening and testing. The first step to any ethical problem is to understand the topic. It is difficult to formulate accurate ideas without knowledge about the topic, so first I will provide a little background information on genetic screening. I will then point out some of the areas of controversy associated with genetic screening, and finally I will discuss my view on the topic. Genetic screening can be used to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In some ways genetic screening will become similar to a fortuneteller a scientific fortuneteller. This new information will have some obvious benefits. We will now be able to predict if we will be susceptible to a certain disease and consequently take more preventative measures against that disease. Treatment for some genetic diseases may also become available and we will be able to treat that disease. With our new technology, we may be able to treat problems in utero before a child is even born. This new information may seem like a great benefit up front, but there are many areas of ethical and moral concern that need to be addressed. What kind of decisions is this new information going to call on us to make? Who will have access to this information? One of the main concerns to genetic screening is that it will lead to new forms of discrimination. This new discrimination could arise in a number of areas. One area that worries many groups is discrimination in the workplace based on genetic predisposition. Could or would employers use genetic information when hiring employees? Munson points out a specific case when this may happen. Ten percent of the population has a variant form of a gene, which produces AHH (amyl hydrocarbon hydroxylase) an enzyme that breaks down hydrocarbons in pollutants. The variant form of the gene produces the enzyme in excessive amounts that react with hydrocarbons and produce carcinogenic substances. These people would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Considering where technology is right now we aren t addicted to Social Media, it just turns out to be our daily essential for information that we crave for. Technology has unlocked faster communication and the ability to spread information quickly. Which allows us to connect with the world and discover other people s perspectives, creating a more diverse view and opinion of topics and information. In addition, not all information is truthful, especially the widespread of fabricated news, but with technology and social media a lot of people can fact check information instead of getting news from mainstream media outlets that alter news to acquire more revenue. And if Social Media is so bad, why does everyone still use it everyday? With all that said, I think that social media impacts people, especially Millennials more positive than negative considering that it is a powerful tool that almost everyone can use. A plethora of information with diverse perspectives at your fingertips and accessing it in an instant. I believe that smartphones and computers is a growing standard among Millennials now for daily living, people can find out about news and information all around the world in an instant at the comfort of their home. She Unames Them features the Genesis character Eve as the main character. The short story is divided into two sections. The first section is written in third person and is a detailed narrative of a multitude of animals essentially giving up their names upon the command of Eve. It describes the response of each animal in this matter. For instance, the story describes the elder female yaks holding a council meeting to discuss whether they found it fit to rid themselves of their name. They also described the issue with household pets that wished to keep the name their master gave them. The text states, But as soon as they understood that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This us significant because in Genesis 3:20 it says, And Adam called his wife s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living. Therefore, by giving up her title of mother of all living, Eve removes her station as above the animals and makes herself one with them. Another reason this is significant is because in Genesis 2:23 it is written, And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore, she is disconnecting herself from Adam. She is no longer being called woman, which is taken out of man. She is unique from all creation yet she is also connected with all of creation. Accordingly, the story implies the only way to find true spirituality is by making yourself one with nature. This is implied through the narrative of Adam searching for the key to the garden of Eden. This is ironic because he is essentially looking for a material object to enter a spiritual place. However, by abandoning her human nature and finding oneness with nature, Eve has managed to find Eden in the world outside of the garden. Then when Adam asks what time dinner is, which is important because cooking dinner is often considered a womanly task. Eve does not know how to answer this questions. This shows she has forsaken what Adam believes her role job is as a woman in favor of joining the animals. This moral is important because it supports humanism and nature. It also ... • 6. The Man Who Would Be King Analysis Rudyard Kipling s novella, The Man Who Would Be King , is about two English men, Daniel Dravot and Peachey Carnehan, who are cons artists that live in India with the goal of becoming the kings of Kafiristan. The story is told through a narrator, an Englishman, that stumbles upon the two characters through a strange interaction at a train station. After meeting up with the narrator at his job, Dravot and Carnehan gather as much information as they can about Kafiristan and head off in disguise for their journey to becoming kings. There are many similarities regarding how and why the British Empire and Dravot and Carnehan came to imperialize these Indian countries. Throughout the whole novella, Kipling uses the story as a way to display ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kipling also showed how the English empire thought they were superior to the natives of India and Kafiristan in multiple ways. Dravot would compliment the natives he was ruling over by calling them English, These men aren t Indian, they are English. This implies that being English is the right way to act. Kipling also displayed English superiority when Dravot refused to listen to the people he was ruling when they protested against him marrying a woman that was not a god. Kipling too thought that the British gained power in a corrupt manner. This was revealed when Dravot claimed to be friends with one of the gods the Kafiristan people worshipped. Both Dravot and Carnehan took advantage of the natives in a fraudulent manner as did the British. Kipling further showed how he thought the style the British were ruling was poor because both Dravot and Carnehan mimicked British methods. Both characters created a contract, modernized the country they took over, and brought new rules, just like the English. In both the story and reality, the people rebel against the English to reclaim their Independence. Through symbolism, Kipling uses each character from the novella to display some aspect of the British Empire in a way that reflected his views. Carnehan represents the expanding aspect of British imperialism. Carnehan actually wants to grow Kafiristan and care for the people. Dravot represents the monarchy itself by having a ... • 7. Amitav Ghosh the Hungry Tide and the Interesting Narrative... Both The Hungry Tide and The Interesting Narrative Of Olaudah Equiano are tales of sociological hardships combined with a life bound to the sea. The ocean plays a significant role in the text offering disempowerment to some whilst empowering others. In The Interesting Narrative the slave trade was in full swing and a capitalist attitude heavily dominates the text, whilst in The Hungry Tide capitalism plays a smaller role and the humanitarian backdrop of the story is a more central theme. In this essay I will draw into focus the various ways in which the ocean is represented as empowering and disempowering to the lives of characters looking at them as they develop through the text and contrasting their empowerment against that of others. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To attempt to leave the island would likely result in death and the most fearful disempowerment possible. Hywel Dix argues that with no money, power, or political influence, they are simply treated as objects to be shunted from one location to another. [9] Dix is here arguing that the weak become weaker at the hands of a greater force, which is exactly what happens to the settlers. The ocean is therefore seen as disempowering at the hands of the powerful government forces. This use of the ocean as a way of the strong disempowering the weak is also seen in The Interesting Narrative. In the same way the ocean is used to imprison the settler s, the Africans find themselves similarly imprisoned by it on board their ship. Equiano makes a direct reference to his ship as being like a prison; I was ready to curse the tide that bore us, the gale that wafted my prison. [10] The ocean is much like the police controlled perimeter that keeps them captive with the looming threat of death for those who attempt to escape. Gilbert C. Klingel supports this notion of the ocean as being like that of a prison; it is a prison without bars or cells, the only walls are the lines of gleaming surf. [11] Much like the settlers, Equiano is powerless to resist and is therefore kept captive by the ocean. In exactly the same way ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Instances where Music Has Been Influenced by Politics Music has always been tied to what has been happening to in the world around its creator. This is true for classical music, as well as popular (pop) music. Pop music is music that is mass marketed and shared primarily by recordings. The Emergence of pop music occurred because of the invention of three recording devices, the phonograph cylinder (1878), the flat gramophone record (1887), and the Player piano (1896). Musicians like James Reese Europe had to find ways to allow himself (and other African Americans) able to perform, as well as get his music heard. Shostakovich had to work within Stalin s Social Realism. Ravel s La Valse is a reaction the War in Europe. In many ways has music has been influenced by the politics of the time these are the three composers I am going to focus on. James Reese Europe lived from 1880 1919. He studied music theory and violin from the Assistant Director of the United States Marine Corps Band. When he was 22 he moved to New York, where he was able to get some work but not a whole lot. This was due to his African heritage. So, he responded by creating the Clef Club. The Clef Club was a multipurpose organization; it served as social club, a booking agency, and a trade union for African American musicians in New York City. Through this club, he was able to stage concerts at Carnegie Hall with 125 piece orchestras. Criminal Rights is the branch of Civil Rights cases that will be evaluated in this paper. Criminal Rights cases date back to the early twentieth century, and the majority of Criminal Rights cases are over 5th, 6th and 14th Amendment rights. These cases are important to the public because anyone could commit a crime. The people of the U.S deserve rights under any circumstances even if they are criminals. Ernesto Miranda was arrested in his house and brought to the police station where he was questioned by police officers in connection with a kidnapping and rape. The Supreme Court argued if the Fifth Amendment s protection against self incrimination extends to the police interrogation of a suspect (Oyez). Chief Justice Earl Warren delivered the majority opinion that the suspect must be aware that anything he says can be used against him in a court of law and that if at any point her requests an attorney there will be no further questioning until the attorney arrives (Oyez). Staples should commission a study to find estimated rates of cannibalization so that an orderly response can be implemented. The critique team would add that by capturing online market share ahead of competitors, Staples.com can reduce the cost of overcoming competitor customer loyalty in the online market. The switching cost will still be absent for many customers that are new to the internet office supplies market. The critique team would add that Staples catalogue business increased wallet share by a factor of three. This is the very business that will likely be cannibalized in the ordinary course of business by opening the online store. Staples should not spend too much money on trying to increase wallet share when it will likely be transitioning between business units. However, Staples should still take the opportunity to market services as a way to expand customer wallet. All marketing expenditures on promoting new services market share will spill over into wallet share. Any wallet share campaign on services should be lower priority than market share marketing. 3. • 13. The Bible And The Holy Bible Any Christian who reads the Holy Bible and studies to Bible knows many of Jesus s as parables. The new testament is filled with numerous amount of parables which seem to be stories that Jesus told in order to get his message across. The word parable comes from παροιμιαν which means a figure of speech., and this is the way that Jesus spoke. I have spoken to you in figures of speech; the hour is coming when I shall no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but tell you plainly of the Father. (John 16:25) When Jesus spoke to the people this is how he spoke to them However, while it seems that these were simple stories it is apparent from the reading that Jess s parables were methodically thought through with each being very precisely accurate in the structure of the stories. Moreover, followers can seem to have a different meaning to these parables because depending on the situation and relationship with Jesus that a particular person had it is possible for the interpretation may not match the next persons. Yet, Jesus has used these analogy to illustrate his point, people of Jesus time may have understood him better when the parables could be related to their every day lives. In the new testament of the Bible there is an astounding 46 parables. Of the 46 parables in the bible some of those are repeated within the other gospel but one which is unique to all the others is one parable the good Samaritan And these were important information that was needed in order for the ... Sometimes presidents with severe deficiencies in character have been elected, sometimes others lacking leadership skills and the ability to tackle the problems and difficulties posed by the presidency. However, there have also been some presidents who, though not without their flaws, have remained as a model of an ideal president to many people. Washington and Lincoln are two of these presidents, who exemplified many admirable qualities as leaders. This year, voters will again have to choose who they think would be the most qualified candidate. But before this can be determined, it has to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition, ideally, the president should not be someone who primarily desires the fame and power that comes with the presidency. Instead, they should be someone who truly desires the good of the country, even if it will make them less popular. Take George Washington, for example. He was already a respected and well liked leader, but he did not want to assume the position of president. In his inaugural speech, he said, On the one hand, I was summoned by my Country, whose voice I can never hear but with veneration and love, from a retreat which I had chosen with the fondest predilection, and, in my flattering hopes, with an immutable decision, as the asylum of my declining years... (Washington). He then went on to express how insufficient he felt for the task of being president. It is common for presidents to arrive as potential candidates after engaging in other major undertakings, political or otherwise. The third qualification for a president, then, is that they should have an honorable reputation and past history. Tied in with this, is the criterion that the president should have had prior positive leadership experience, where they acted honorably and did not do things such as use bribery or engage in questionable practices. It should also be easy for them to gain the respect of the people. The president should also be a good problem solver, should be knowledgeable in the laws and policies of the country, ... • 16. Uncle Sam Nickname On this day in 1813, the United States gets its nickname, Uncle Sam. The name is linked to Samuel Wilson, a meat packer from Troy, New York, who supplied barrels of beef to the United States Army during the War of 1812.Wilson (1766 1854) stamped the barrels with U.S. for United States, but soldiers began referring to the grub as Uncle Sam s. In today s world, people may have a family member or simply a friend that has been diagnosed with Alzheimer s disease. It is essential that people are educated about the definition, origin, effect, and treatment of Alzheimer s disease because it is so much more than just memory loss. First, people should know the definition of Alzheimer Disease (AD). Alzheimer Disease is one form of Dementia. It affects memory, thinking, and behavior. People with AD endure challenges in planning and problem solving, as well as difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, work or leisurely activities such as confusing time and places. There are three stages of AD, mild, moderate, and severe. Mild AD is more of misplacing things, talking in repetition of yourself, and changes in personality. In addition, when AD is only in the mild stage, people have trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships, new problems with words in speaking or writing, poor judgement, withdrawal from work or social activities, and changes in mood. In moderate Alzheimer s Disease, damage occurs in areas of the brain that control language, reasoning, sensory processing, and conscious thought. It is the longest of the three stages. This stage can last for many years. As the disease progresses, it typically gets difficult for victims of AD to recognize the most familiar faces, such as, friends and family. Last, People with severe Alzheimer s cannot communicate and are completely dependent on others for their care (Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment). Some symptoms of severe Alzheimer s are weight loss, seizures, skin infections, groaning, moaning, or grunting. Introduction In 2006, the United Nations Children s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) 1 published the report, Pneumonia: The forgotten killer of children which identified pneumonia as one of the world s leading causes of childhood mortality accounting for one in five under five deaths. The fourth Millennium Development Goal (MDG) from the 2000 summit is to reduce under five mortality rate by two thirds by 20151. With its significant contribution to under five mortality, reduction of the childhood pneumonia mortality is essential to achieving this goal. However, pneumonia still accounts for about 19% of childhood under five deaths and contributes significantly to morbidity and disability among children globally. Majority of these pneumonia related deaths occur in developing countries and are concentrated in a few countries1,2. In 2013, over half of the under five pneumonia deaths occurred in 10 countries located in sub Saharan Africa, South Asia and South east Asia1,2. Through this act, the federal government was to provide funds to schools to have bilingual educational programs. The act primarily focused on Spanish speaking children, but later was amended to benefit other children as well (Glavin). Several states in the United States opposed bilingual education and in 2002, Initiative 31 was on the Colorado ballot. Initiative or Amendment 31, required schools to be taught only in English (figure 1). Parents were given the option to request bilingual education, but it would be extremely difficult for it to be accepted, due to schools having the right to deny their request. Instead, non English speakers would be placed in an English immersion program. In this program, students would be given a year to learn English and later move to a normal classroom ( Amendment 31 ). On November 5, 2002, the initiative was rejected by 55 percent (Benz 1). Considering the rejection of the initiative, Colorado began adapting programs to assist English language learners (ELLs). Nonetheless, dual language education remains highly controversial. While bilingual education has many positive outcomes, we cannot ignore the fact that it is not 100 percent effective. Not every child learns the same; therefore, bilingual education does not provide equal opportunities for everyone. • 38. The Seagram Building Essay examples The Seagram Building is prime example of the international style of design in the 20th century. The building is a true landmark of the city having an open plaza at the base of the building with high ceilings, floor to ceiling tinted windows and bronze mullions. Its imperious design, set in a plaza with fountain, was imitated many times and became an icon of North American corporate design. Mies is known as the father of the steel and glass structure. Mies designed many buildings during his life however none of the would be as popular and famous as the Seagram Building. In real estate and architecture, some dreams need a lot of staying power to get realized. The Seagram Building is the realization, some three decades late, of Mies van ... Yet its much heralded plaza, which led the city to rewrite much of its office district zoning in 1961 to encourage similar open public spaces in new projects, is not really appropriate or necessary on as broad a landscaped boulevard as Park Avenue. Although the plaza has no formal seating, its low, dark green, polished granite north and south walls are Park Avenue s most popular seating areas in good weather. The plaza has two rectangular reflecting pools at its north and south ends that are filled with forests of Christmas trees during the holiday seasons. For many years, a large Henry Moore sculpture was placed off center in the plaza. Credit for the Seagram s high quality goes to Phyllis Lambert, the daughter of Samuel Bronfman, the head of Seagram s. Bronfman had selected Charles Luckman to design his proposed tower at the site. Luckman, as chance had it, had been the chief executive officer of Lever Brothers before becoming a full time architect. Lambert, who had studied architecture, convinced her father to switch architects and upgrade the project and recommended Mies van der Rohe, who was internationally recognized but without a signature building in New York. With more than 800,000 square feet of office space, the Seagram Building is not petite. Business Disputes Of New York Keywords: business disputes in New York, commercial disputes in New York, arbitration in New York, real estate disputes in New York Resolving Small Business Disputes in New York New York is home to thousands of business. Some are international corporations, others are local. In New York, there are businesses in every industry, and, and some point, these businesses will face disputes. For small businesses in New York particular, a business dispute can mean the end of the life of the company, due to its tremendous expense and its potential to damage a business reputation in the community. Fortunately, business disputes in small businesses do not always result in an expensive lawsuit, and many are resolved without court assistance at all. Every business, even the smallest ones, needs a plan in place for handling disputes. It is best for the business owners and managers to create such a plan when there are no active conflicts within the company. Each business should have a method for resolving customer complaints, disagreements between employees, conflict with other companies, and so on. A business attorney is an excellent resource for putting these plans into place. When conflict does arise, each party to the dispute will understand how it will be resolved, providing a more efficient method of finalizing a disagreement. It is essential to handle business disputes as soon as possible before they cause unnecessary animosity and stress within the business. Businesses may ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Specific Environmental Effects Of Environmental Effects On... Laboratory 7: Environmental Effects on Enzyme Activity BI 185 03 BY Charlie Kane 10/24/17 Abstract During this experiment we tested the effects that specific environmental conditions have on the enzyme, peroxidase. Through this experiment we developed an understanding of enzymes and their functions. By exposing the enzymes to different environments, we observed a changed in their activity. In order for us to measure these changes we used the technique of spectrophotometry, meaning we used a spectrophotometer, which measures the amount of light a chemical can absorb. In our findings we discovered that certain environmental factors such as pH, temperature, boiling do have an affect on enzyme activity. In conclusion the five null hypothesis were proven to be incorrect. Introduction Enzymes are biological catalysts that carry thousands of chemical reactions that occur in living cells. They could be found in every living thing. Enzymes increase the rate at which chemical reactions occur. A catalyst speeds up a chemical reaction by lowering the activation energy required. They are proteins made up of several amino acids. Each enzyme is different due to its structure, it all has different amino acid sequence. An enzymes ability to function depends on it s environment. These factors include temperature, denaturation, pH, the size , the shape, and the amount of enzymes present. Enzymes performs best at ph7. That is the same pH as blood , the more enzymes stray away from pH7 the weaker it becomes , the active site gets damaged. This makes the enzyme not active, no longer functional. When it comes to temperature enzymes at a certain temperature have maximum activity. As temperature increases the enzyme activity also increases. When enzymes reach their maximum activity level and the temperature is still increasing it will start to decline (denaturation). The rate of reaction also depends on how much enzymes are present. We tested 5 hypothesis which were the amount of enzyme does not alter the rate of a reaction. pH does not influence the rate of an enzyme reaction. Temperature does not influence the rate of an enzyme activity. Boiling an enzyme before a reaction does not influence enzyme activity. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Replicating Genetic Cloning to Produce Red Fluorescent Protein Introduction: Genetic engineering has been used by scientists to create proteins in different amounts to adapt bacteria and now students will have the chance to learn and replicate different procedures (Amgen Biotech Experience, 2015). One recent discovery was that because of genetic engineering you can release insulin at your own free will through your phone. This was tested on a diabetic mouse that had an implant that was shown with an LED light (Shao et al./Sci. Trans. Med. 2017). One of the most important tools used in this lab is a micropipette. Add restriction buffer and the plasmids into two tubes labeled R+ and R , restriction enzymes into R+, and distilled water into R . One thing to note is to mix after you add anything to tubes and once it is finished let the two tubes spin in a microcentrifuge for about four seconds in order to fully mix it all. After this, place the two tubes in a rack and incubate them in a water bath that is 37 degrees Celsius for an hour and place them in a freezer that is 20 degrees Celsius. Lab 4A consists of using gel electrophoresis to further examine the pARA R plasmid by viewing them in a DNA ladder. Start by adding loading dye into the two tubes and centrifuging them for a few seconds. Before putting them in the gel walls check to make sure it is in the negative side and not the positive side. Add buffer to cover the walls and keep track of where you will add the R , R+, and ladder. It is very important to use new, fresh tips and to add them very carefully. Once everything has been put in, cover the box and connect the cables to the power supply in the correct order: black to black for negative and red to red for positive. Turn the power on and put the voltage up to 130v 135v and let it set for 40 to 50 minutes. For the first two to three minutes check to see if it is moving towards the positive side and if it isn t, inform the instructor. Dialect is a form Wang 3 of a language that is spoken in a particular area and that uses some of its own words, grammar, and pronunciations. (Webster Dictionary) African American Vernacular English(AAVE) was often called as Ebonics by Non linguists. The languages and dialects are noble, which should not be separated by personal biased thought about the race, color, region, religion. However, in 1997, a nation wide debate about Ebonics took place, which made people aware of the Black English for the first time. The fuse of that case was the Oakland, Calif. School board, which claimed that Ebonics was a kind of genetically based language. When they used the word genetically based , it means that the school separated the African American students from the regular students in a biased way by genetically reason, which like separate the black people and white people. The school even presented their program and funds from the local government about the bilingual education for the Ebonics students which intended to teach these English speaking students Standard English . It showed that they didn t consider the Ebonics as a dialect of English, but a literally separated language. • 46. Knee Injury Prevention and Conditioning Essay Knee Injury Prevention and Conditioning An estimated 50 million Americans have suffered or are suffering knee pain or injuries. Most of these pains, sprains, and strains could probably have been avoided with proper conditioning (Fox, 147). I have had knee pain since my freshmen year of high school and have finally taken the initiative to find some exercises that will help ease this pain, and build muscle strength in the surrounding areas to avoid another possible injury. Getting the support muscles of my legs in shape is one good way to lower the risk of knee injury. Therefore, a good conditioning program is needed. Exercises are certainly one answer, but all too often people consider exercise and activity as being synonymous. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Stretching must be part of the total regimen. Focusing on stretching the hamstring muscles very well is a good way to help prevent knee injuries. In particular, increasing hamstring flexibility takes some pressure off of the kneecap. Furthermore, the end of activity stretch has been shown to virtually eliminate postexercise muscle problems. Strengthening exercises are very important in preventing injury, especially to the knee. Most of the protection afforded the knee comes from the powerful quadriceps muscles, the hamstrings, and the calf muscles. These muscles control the movement of the knee. If they do not have proper tension, the control of the joint will be lost. When these muscles are weak, the knee is not only unprotected, it has to assume a much greater load and this can be painful. Strengthening will also increase endurance. When I suffer knee pain midway through a busy day, I do two simple exercises: (1) Straight leg raises from a sitting position; (2) while sitting with my leg straight out, I tighten my leg muscles for a slow five count, then flex and repeat. See Appendix. Knee pain doesn t have to keep a person from climbing stairs, or shopping with friends. Preliminary data suggested that when 30 people with osteoarthritis of the knee, a common cause of pain, followed an at home strength training program, they averaged a 37% reduction in pain and an 82% increase in strength of the affected leg.
