Free Radical Research Paper
Free radicals are groups of atoms, molecules, or ions that possess an unpaired/unshared valence
electron in their electron orbitals. Due to this, many radicals are very reactive because they want to
reach a stable state. They can be classified as oxidants or reductants depending on whether they accept
electrons from other atoms or donate atoms. Free radicals can be produced by natural processes such
as metabolism. They are also generated from foods that we eat, water, medication, etc.
Free radicals are essential to the human body because they are important components of the immune
system and they also assist the body with the production of chemical energy. However, they can be
dangerous. A free radical can take an an electron from another

To Kill a Mockingbird Essay examples
Children look up to their elders for wisdom and advice. They rely on someone experienced and with
authority for guidance on how to live their lives. However, sometimes the people who are accountable
for youth mislead them; they may have good intentions, but are not mature enough to exemplify their
values and morals, or they simply are ignorant. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Aunt Alexandra
plays a negative role: she is a proper, southern lady with a strict code of behaviour and etiquette, but is
too closed minded and obstreperous to change her ways or view the world from others perspectives.
Calpurnia takes on the position of a positive role model by disciplining the children in the Finch
household. Miss Maudie takes on the role of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Lee, 83) Aunt Alexandra is inimical towards people such as Walter Cunningham as well, who are less
fortunate and therefore perceived as repugnant and unfit to be her niece s playmate.
...you can scrub Walter Cunningham till he shines, you can put him in shoes and a suit, but he ll never
be like Jem...Because he is trash. (Lee, 224 225).
These words indicate not only a vituperative nature, but arrogance and obstinacy. She believes white
people are better than black people. She refuses to consider anything positive about people she finds
reprehensible; she is steadfast on her opinions about people and would rather not get to know them.
She is also quite domineering and officious; she often meddles with Atticus fatherly role:
...it s bad enough he lets you all run wild... (Lee, 83), Aunt Alexandra put him up to this... (Lee, 134).
This grandiloquence is a manifestation of hypocrisy in the novel because her behaviour towards others
is atrocious, yet she expects the best manners from Scout. Calpurnia is a much more positive
caregiver, as she is a strict disciplinarian, but to a lesser degree than Aunt Alexandra. Likewise she is
not a hypocrite; she could comment on the ways of white people because she has been raised in a
white environment.
I ve spent all my days workin for the Finches or the Bufords... (Lee, 125). An example of how
Calpurnia disciplines Scout Finch is when she takes Scout into the kitchen after she complains that

Nuclear Warfare And Its Effects On The World
In early August 1945, President Harry Truman approved for two nuclear bombs, uranium 235 and
plutonium 239, made by the United States of America and the United Kingdom, to be dropped on
Hiroshima and Nagasaki bringing the Second World War to an abrupt end. On the first day of the
bombing, each city lost an estimate of at least one half of their population. During the following
months, between 150,000 and more than 246,000 deaths occurred from the effect of burns, radiation
sickness, and other injuries, compounded by illness brought on by the nuclear effects. This is act is
otherwise known as nuclear warfare and with the advancements of modern technology, the extent of
damage is increased while the amount of time it takes for these effects ... Show more content on

This is just one example of the many nuclear weapons in the world. Nuclear warfare is caused by a
military conflict or a political strategy in which one uses nuclear weaponry to inflict damage upon the
opponent. Some believe that politicians and military personnel only want to possess nuclear weapons
because of the heightened sense of power and feeling of security. It s scary to think that the human
race is in the hands of the people who own these weapons. The effects of nuclear use can be divided
into four categories: instantaneous, near immediate, short term, and long term. The heart of a nuclear
explosion reaches temperatures over a several million degree centigrade resulting in a heat flash over a
wide area that vaporizes all human tissue. At Hiroshima, within a radius of half a mile, the only
remains of most of the people caught in the open were their shadows burnt into stone. The near
immediate effects are the people inside buildings or otherwise shielded, will be indirectly killed by the
blast and heat effects as buildings collapse and all inflammable materials burst into flames. The
immediate death rate will be over 90%. Outside the area of total destruction will be survivors.
However, these survivors will be blinded, suffering from fatal burns, bleeding from glass splinters, or
have suffered massive internal injuries. The death rate will continue to climb since emergency services
would be incapable of responding due to destroyed equipment

Childhood Arrivals
On June 15, 2012, President Barack Obama passed an executive order, Deferred Action for Childhood
Arrivals (DACA), that helped to make it more possible for undocumented students to attend college.
DACA s passing has left administration at colleges and universities with differing approaches on how
to support, or not, undocumented students attending their institution. However, there are still holes in
the support for undocumented students in pursuing higher education. The purpose of this paper is to
provide a brief overview of the undocumented student experience, discuss how it relates to Mount
Holyoke College, offer viewpoints from the student and dean perspectives, and provide analysis of

though the power of an idea is in the ability to use the new ideas. ...can be an amazing tool if
departments actually use it to specifically create resources for undocumented students (2016, para.

Campbell s Five-Viewpoints
The five paragraph formula is a destructive formula that cuts the blood flow of creativity from
students. As Campbell essentially argues in his paper, Beyond the Five Paragraph Essay. Campbell s
main idea that he reiterates and stresses over and over again; is that the five paragraph formula doesn t
properly allow students to express themselves with their own unique voice through writing. The
alternatives to the five paragraph formula are better suited for students as they allow students to use as
he stated, their authentic, authoritative voices.
Campbell sets the scene by showing how some teachers defended the five paragraph formula when he
was doing a presentation on common core standards. Campbell s main reason for writing the ... Show

Campbell did a great job in laying out and showing the main reasons and arguments against the five
paragraph formula. However, in terms of his essay, he neglected to mention a few things that would ve
further enriched his essay. One of the critical aspects he neglected to mention that I would add would
be mainly statistics instead of heavily relying on anecdotal evidence. For example, on page 62 as he is
discussing the key issues with the formula he stated, it doesn t ensure success on standardized tests or
in college. I would ve added a statistics further enriching the say by getting his point across and
having a somewhat of a shock factor. A shock factor would ve really made his point stand out and
would not just have the essay rely on anecdotal evidence but a mixture of scientific and anecdotal
evidence. Moreover, I would ve also included a more sound concluding paragraph. I felt like the last
paragraph left a somewhat sour taste in my mouth; I would ve added now that they are able to write
better essays their writing has drastically improved and really highlighted the overall difference in
quality between using different formulas. I believe that would ve enriched the essay and left a more
sound concluding paragraph with a much sweeter taste.
From the get go Campbell s voice was established and had a booming presence throughout. He also
had his ideas shine through and not get muffled when referencing other people s works; truly elevating

President Roosevelt s National Parks And Preservation...
As President Mckinley condition stabilized, post being shot, Vice President Theodore Roosevelt
embarked to view the vastness of nature in the less developed west. His trip was cut short, as he got
word that Mckinley s condition had turned for the worse. Mckinley was pronounced dead September
14, 1901; subsequently, Roosevelt was sworn into the presidency, along with his progressive views.
Although this was not the start of the conservation and preservation movements, extended from the
late 19th through the early 20th century, it was a major step for the movement as Roosevelt had
empathy for activists and nature. The combination of a movement and a president who was willing to
move resulted in five national parks and 18 national monuments being established by the end of
Roosevelt s presidency. After the establishment of these parks, the lands were to be preserved by
federal government, but the political and economical agendas of those opposed to the conservation
and preservation movements still endangered the pristine land. The fact that it took a president to get
assassinated, before any serious legislative help came to aid the conservation and preservation
movements. If the movement came in a more populated group, which could agree on how save the
environment around us, then it wouldn t have taken this mishap to get the ball rolling. The battle for
Hetch Hetchy highlighted the different views within the movement, all in favor of environmental
protection. Years later

Japan s The Soviet War
wThe shift in policy (the reinterpretation of Article 9 and what is the changes) would mean Japan
could assert itself as a military power in the region and expand its influence globally, as well as
provide the U.S. with a string military ally that act as a counterweight against an increasingly
aggressive China, Russia and North Korea.
The controversy with remilitarization lies in Japan s constitution, which forbids Japan from having a
military. After WWII, Japan s wartime atrocities were fresh on the mind of the Supreme Commander
of Allied Powers, General Douglas MacArthur. In order to eliminate the possibility of Japan ever
taking aggressive military action again, MacArthur and his senior officials wrote a new constitution
for Japan, which pursued a number of reforms including disbanding the military. Specifically, Article
9 states (states the article 9 point).
What is ironic is that even though the United States wrote Japan s pacifist constitution that disarmed
the nation, the U.S. has been pushing for the remilitarization of Japan since the Cold War. In 1952, the
two nations signed the U.S. Japan Peace Treaty, in which the U.S. recognized Japan s right to join in
collective defence and its United Nations right to defend itself as a sovereign nation. Over the years, it
has become evident that despite the benefits Japan has enjoyed from its peaceful constitution, the time
has come for Japan to embody its right as a sovereign nation to provide its own defence.

Essay On How Women Changed America
Women have faced many challenges due to unequal rights in the United States. The time period of
these chapters go from roughly 1868 to 1980. During this time there was World War I, multiple court
cases such as Brown v. Board of Education, the Civil Rights Act, World War II, and new technology
being made. During these war times women had to step up to take over the mens jobs while they were
fighting. Rosie the Riveter was a big campaign approach during WWII to get women working in the
factories. Women proved that their place wasn t only in the domestic sphere. Women changed America
by accepting challenges, fighting for what they believed in, and taking risks.
Women changed America by accepting challenges. Whenever the world would throw a milestone at
them, they would catch it and deal with it. Married career women challenged the idea that family life
offered every woman all the fulfillment and opportunity for self expression she would ever need (ch.

Without risk taking women wouldn t be where they are today. Margaret Sanger took a successful risk
in inventing the birth control pill. This pill allowed women to take more control over their bodies.
With 97 percent effectiveness, the pill relieved women of the fear of unwanted pregnancies (ch. 19).
Based on the planned parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky, over 99% of women have used birth
control in their lives.
In opposition, Some people think that women have done more bad than good to change America.
Some think that the women s movement has caused children to rebel against their parents resulting in
bad behavior. Such as the 1920 s, for example, girls were dressing in short skirts, dancing to Jazz
music, and smoking. Immigrant children were even being rebellious when they came to America.
Once in school, children were more apt to listen to their American teachers than their foreign born
mothers. (ch. 12). Their old country values and beliefs were fading

Essay About Duterte
Radical simply means grasping things at the root Angela Davis (Radical Quotes). Throughout history,
radical change meats two things: a chaotic new era where people suffered, or it meant a prosperous
time for the people. During the Russian Revolution, Vladimir Lenin led an uprising with the people to
form a communist government. This radical change brought forth a demise to the new Russian society
and its people as the new system led them to time of economic depression and poverty. On the other
hand, the American Revolution was a radical uprising that would be the start of the United States of
America. As a result, the U.S. today has created a government that is considered unrivaled in its
efficiency. Rodrigo Duterte, a man known for his unorthodox methods and aggressive nature, is
considered a radical candidate in this year s election. Duterte s actions are heavily criticized as well as

Schizophrenic Epidemiological Studies
Another compelling facet of schizophrenic etiological research is perinatal complications and
infections. Commonly researched obstetric complications and infections connected to schizophrenia
include (but are not limited to) influenza, inflammatory cytokines, fetal hypoxia, Toxoplasma gondii,
and placental abnormalities (Brown Derkits, 2013; Cannon et al., 2010; Hakkinen et al., 2013;
Jenkins, 2013; Khandaker, Jones, Lewis, Zimbron, 2013). Perinatal environments monitored during

351). The findings of the prospective cohort study suggest that fetal hypoxia acts as an additive or
interactive factor that increases liability to schizophrenia (Cannon et al., 2010). Most studies have
found that schizophrenia is associated with multiple complication rather than specific, isolated causes
(Cannon et al., 2010; Khandaker et al., 2013). Hypoxia related OCs are related to the etiology of
schizophrenia, however, a complex studied completed by the Schizophrenic Bulletin note that these
factors are unlikely to cause schizophrenia on their own.
Relationships between influenza and schizophrenia were first researched based on influenza
epidemics. However, much of the data collected during that period was misdiagnosed and therefore
unable to be used in current studies with any degree of accuracy (Khandaker et al., 2013; Jenkins,
2013; Brown Derkits, 2013). A study noted by Brown Derkits (2013) demonstrated a threefold
increase in risk of schizophrenia following exposures to influenza during the first half of gestation,
however, had no elevated risk during the second half of gestation after influenza

was a civilisation there between the 9th and 15th centuries AD. The City of Angkor started to decline
in the late 14th century AD then eventually collapsed in the 15th century AD. There are a variety of
things that can be learnt about the City of Angkor and the Khmer and Cham armies fighting methods

Two Kinds Of Friendship By Aristotle
There are three kinds of friendship, according to Aristotle. The first type of friendship based on utility.
In this type of friendship, both individuals get some sort of benefit from their friend. The second type
of friendship is based on pleasure. Here, both individuals are drawn to the other s personality, looks, or
other pleasant qualities. The third and final type of friendship is based on goodness, in which the
individuals admire their friend s goodness and in which they help one another in their pursuit for
happiness. The first two friendships are mostly accidental, due to the friends being more motivated by
their own pleasure and utility and not by anything essential to their friend. Both kinds are short lived

But Horatio is not afraid of the ghost, only of what it portends that something is not well with
Denmark. He is calm, resolute, and rational as he demands that the ghost tell him whether it has come
to confess some ill deed or to predict the future fate of Denmark.
Horatio is not afraid to speak his mind to Hamlet, either. When Hamlet meets the ghost for the first
time, Horatio makes it clear that Hamlet s choice to follow the ghost in hopes of learning the reason
for its appearance is ill advised. He is honest and forthright in his arguments and seems genuinely
worried that Hamlet might be tempted to lose his reason and be drawn into madness, which, Horatio
tells him, will lead to thoughts of suicide. When Hamlet follows the ghost anyway, learns that King
Hamlet was poisoned, and is sworn to avenge his death, Horatio allows himself to be sworn to silence
and keep Hamlet s secret. Horatio is not only an honest, but a loyal friend, and the secret of Hamlet s
father s ghost is the first of many secrets that Horatio will keep for Hamlet. As the play progresses,
Horatio questions Hamlet s judgment twice more. Once is when Hamlet tells him of a letter from King
Claudius that he has found in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern s pack, telling the King of England that
he must have Hamlet killed. The second instance is when Hamlet tells Horatio that he will fight

Analysis Of The Novel Things Fall Apart
Things Fall Apart novel tries to bring back up cultural, social as well as spiritual basics of traditional
Igbo (Ibo) existence from the year 1850 and 1900. The novel cannot be fixed like truthful societal and
political old times of Ibo society since it is a work of invented story. However, the novel describes
disagreements and apprehensions in Igbo society. It also depicts changes initiated by colonial ruling
and Christianity. The author mentions that European colonialism operates as a powerful as well as
well built mediator of the change within Ibo society. Additionally, Christianity attracted the trivial
associates of the Igbo society. Igbo and other societies were changed considerably due to this variety
of deal with Europeans. A few societies expanded in dimension and authority as marketable centers,
whereas others go through great losses in the course of slave invasion. Hostility also gets higher, and
conflicts tactics tat are distorted due to the use of weapons.
In expressing the accomplishment of Catholic Missionaries Hatch, Roman Catholics appeared to be
most helpful within the endeavor by protecting a paramount place within Igbo society. According to
Chinua Achebe, Educational expansion was the invention of Igbo confined organization but not of

The Great Depression And President Roosevelt s New Deal
The 1930s, historically remembered for the Great Depression and President Roosevelt s New Deal,
demonstrated a time of great racial tension and segregation in America. Slavery dissolved and the Ku
Klux Klan became less popular; the struggle of African Americans, however, was not over. Racial
segregation thrived with half of African Americans out of work, their jobs transfered to whites who
were struggling from the Great Depression ( Race During the Great Depression ). The New Deal,
created to promote equality and produce jobs, proved largely ineffective on the front of desegregation,
doing little to help the black American community. One place that African Americans were able to
prosper: jazz. However, even the jazz community itself remained segregated. Racial prejudice came
from both fronts: whites did not want to mix socially with Negroes, and blacks believed that when a
Negro enters a White band, he loses his identity as a Negro musician ( DownBeat Dodges the Racial
Issue ). Benny Goodman, however, broke this barrier, initially in 1935 with the first interracial jazz
performance, and again in his 1938 Carnegie Hall concert featuring black musicians. Benny Goodman
s career did not commence with the Trio s 1935 performance; a clarinet player from a young age,
Goodman initiated his professional career in 1925 as a member of the Ben Pollack Orchestra. During
his time with the orchestra, he recorded his first solo on the song He s the Last Word. In 1931, Benny

Stereotypical Judgement Essay
Who are you? Who am I? We are different, but we get judged, every day, every hour, every minute
people judge you, on your appearance, on your style, on your attributes. Yet they don t even know
you. It is proven that in the first few moments of meeting someone, we form an opinion of them. Our
society s biggest downfall is that we define people on stereotypical judgements. One of the clearest
examples in today s society is Donald Trump. He claims to ban all Muslims to enter the USA. That is
a stereotypical judgment that he has towards Muslims. He believes all Muslims are terrorist, as per
CNN report Islam is the fastest growing religion in the US; and according to their report, in the USA
some top Doctors and Engineers believe in Islam. So where does he get his claims from? Why does he
create these stereotypical judgements against them? Why can t he work along with them so that we
can live in a better world?
We judge people by their race, we judge people by where they come from, we judge people by the
way they speak. Today, we say all Muslims are terrorist, well if that was the case, wouldn t all
Christians be in the KKK, if this was true we would probably be dead. There are about 2 billion
Muslims in the world, that s about 29% of the world s population; if they all were terrorists the odds of
our survival are slim. We judge a race on the acts of a few, what if not every Muslim we saw was
planning to kill us, what if they are everyday people like you and me. We have put

The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells Essays
The Invisible Man by H. G. Wells gives an account of a man s descent into madness as the result of
his scientific feat, invisibility. Griffin, the invisible man, first appears as a mysterious stranger,
bandaged and seeking shelter and recluse but progressively transforms into a lawless individual with a
proposition to initiate a reign of terror. The change in Griffin s character occurs due to his invisibility
and the power it provides because there is no one, on this view, who is iron willed enough to maintain
his morality and find the strength of purpose to keep his hands off what does not belong to him, when
he is able to take whatever he wants from the market stalls without fear of being discovered, to enter

The invisible man begins to feel limitless and superior to average man, he feels that an invisible man
is a man of power (Wells). Being invisible and the subsequent notion of invincibility causes the
invisible man to act as he pleases as his inhibitions disappear as the fear of being reprimanded is
removed. The absence of consequences strips away the good in Griffin s nature and fosters his
madness as he starts stealing from the markets and begins his spree of breaking into houses.
However, the invisibility that Griffin viewed as power ultimately is a poison as the invisible man must
sacrifice greatly for his for his power. The invisible man schemes grand dreams that can be realized
through his invisibility but discovers that no doubt invisibility made it possible to get them, but it
made it impossible to enjoy them when they are got (Wells 121). Because of his invisibility, the
invisible man finds himself ostracized, in a state of danger, and no longer able to enjoy everyday
customs like eating lunch at a restaurant. Griffin finds himself even unable to celebrate his discovery
with others with fear of that they might steal credit for his feat or that the exposure might cause a
rejection. Due to his invisible state, his grandest ambitions are trivialized and frustrated by the very
discovery that spurred those ambitions (Beiderwell). The anger, madness, and mania that envelop the
invisible man all stem from the abuse of his

Beyond their connection to the affect and narratives constructed by the textual elements, little unifies
the participants that construct and use particular memes. Therefore, each iteration of an image macro
is representative of a particular individual s understanding and identification with the meme. Jenkins
conception of the mode rejects the suggestion that meme s can represent particular viewpoints noting,
Deleuze consistently critiques the view of rhetoric as representation precisely because such accounts
presuppose actual subjects who do the representing. However, while memes should not be considered

Cannibalism And Its Impact On Society
Introduction
Throughout the course of our evolution hominids have engaged in, what today would be considered
savage, inhumane practices, such as manslaughter, torture and mutilation (Lewis, Jurmain Kilgore,
2013). These actions today are considered almost taboo in society, however anthropologists who study
such behaviour and historians who have meticulously documented it are completely comfortable
divulging their work to the scientific community. Based on this acceptance, one would expect the
topic of cannibalism to be met with the same understanding within academia. Astoundingly though,
the discussion of cannibalism within our ancestral past encounters much controversy and is greatly
looked down upon within the general population (White, 2001). For those who study this highly
provocative practice, like paleoanthropologist Tim White, the idea of cannibalism is as significant to
the holistic study of anthropology as the idea of evolution is to the study of creationism. This
viewpoint is only one of many related to cannibalism today and is shared by a very small group of
individuals. The thought of cannibalism within modern society though comes with so much
displeasure to the point that conferences go to the length of entitling presentations such that the notion
of one human being consuming another is eluded altogether. An example of this tactic would be the
Multidisciplinary Approaches to Social Violence in the Prehispanic American Southwest symposium
which outlined

whole university environment to become more aligned with those elements that would foster
improvement on these tests. If it raises test scores it must be sound educational practice. Can this be
accurate? Empowerment Through Online Education
In a 2007 report published by the Sloan Consortium, most universities stated that the main reasons
they continued to expand their online education programs were because such programs improved
student access to education. For example, when universities offer courses online, they can work

Jack Johnson Wins The Olga Championship By Randy Roberts
The author, Randy Roberts in his article Jack Johnson wins the Heavyweight Championship sheds
light on the fight of Jack Johnson with Tommy Burns, he highlights the racial attitude in the twentieth
century. Roberts opens his article by mentioning about the concerned whites, as the author proceeds,
according to the whites it was a tragic and saddest day of their lives as the race won. While Dixie was
agitated, firstly because of the Booker T. Washington dined at the White House and secondly was the
victory of Jack Johnson. However, the blacks rejoiced all over the United States with this news.
Roberts mentions about a journalist report, it stated that the genuine satisfaction the blacks
experienced with the single victory of Johnson was not been observed in forty years.
The author then mentions many industries concern about the blacks being enthusiastic to enter in
boxing due to the triumph of Johnson, which may result in a shortage of labor. On the other hand, Jim
Nasium a black writer counseled many young blacks to take up boxing as a serious profession, he
believed that it is the boxing ring where blacks could face whites on an equal basis. There were many
reports implicating that Johnson had kick started the revolution.
According to the author, it started in August 1908, when Tommy Burns reached Perth. While from
Perth to Sydney, people came in large numbers to cheer him. During this occasions, Burns was asked
recurrently about his fight with Jack Johnson, to which he

Secret Window For Mise En Scene Analysis
Analysing a five minute clip of Secret Window for Mise en Scene and Performance
The first thirty seconds of this clip are of the main character, Mort Rainey in his car. The first thing we
see is the book in his hands, the depth of focus changes as he runs his finger across the stubs of pages.
The focus changes as the character makes a discovery, this could be to emphasise to the audience how
important this discovery might come to be. Then we are shown the character himself, the only thing
slightly obscuring our view of him is the steering wheel, this adds to the creation of the setting. The
symbolic idea behind having the character in his car at this particular moment, could be to show that
he is still discovering things, he hasn t got all of the answers yet, but he s well on his way.

The smart hat is at odds with his unkept appearance and he looks even stranger and more insane with
the hat on. The character quickly stands up and we see his reflection in the mirror. His face is again
almost completely black and you cannot make out his face, he could be anyone stood there. The fact
that his face is obscured is significant, because the character is in the middles of doubting his own
identity.
As Mort Rainey steps towards the mirror, the camera zooms in and shows his face in much more
clarity, this may be an indication of the character s own clarity as to who he is, although it is more
likely, since we are only seeing his reflection, that it is symbolic of the character seeing himself more
clearly, not total clarity. Again, we hear the character talking to his own thoughts, this along with the
way he s playing with the rim of the hat and the way his face seems to indicate he feels comfortable in
the hat, makes the character seem darker and even more

Voting Rights
Young adults in current times have grown up with many rights that have not always been considered a
right but instead a privilege. Voting is one of these rights that was once only considered a privilege,
eligible for a particular gender and ethnicity. For many years this meant that the only group of people
allowed to vote were white males. Today, things are different and everyone has the choice to vote after
they reach the age of eighteen. The right to vote is a powerful right that we must take advantage of
because not every country is lucky enough to have a say in their government. Today, in America we
have the opportunity to decide if we would like to vote or not. Many Americans take pride in this right
as it is considered a civic duty that has not always been eligible to everyone. One of the first changes
in voting rights began with issuing literacy tests to limited individuals in hopes to earn a chance to
vote. Specifically, the 1965 Alabama Literacy Test was given to African Americans before they were
declared eligible to vote. This practice was intended to keep African Americans from having any input
when it came to voting. The idea of this literacy test was to give African Americans the chance to earn
the right to vote but, would not guarantee that right. The 1965 Alabama Literacy Test was part of voter
discrimination by only requiring a certain group of individuals participate in taking it. The 1965
Alabama Literacy Test was intended to be challenging to

The Ballad Of Mulan And Mui Slays The Serpent
In the two stories The Ballad of Mulan and Chi Li Slays the Serpent two young girls living in Ancient
China defy all odds and go against the gender barriers. Mulan and Chi Li are two different women
living in different parts of China, however, they both have similar feelings about the way they should
handle difficult tasks. On the contrary, Mulan is a secretive young girl, while Chi Li is honest. Both
women reveal their true colors when they step out of their traditional role in society and take on the
role of a man.
Chi Li and Mulan both value bravery and their families well being. Chi Li and Mulan both take risks
and forget about fear, as they take on challenges that could end with their death. When Chi Li says,
Poor girls! ... The monster conquered you because you were too timid to put up a fight! How pitiful! it
shows her value because she s making fun of the girls who weren t brave enough to fight the serpent.
Chi Li frowns upon this as she values bravery and these girls were too proper to retaliate. Although
nobody has ever been able to slay the serpent, Chi Li defies all odds and does so because of her
courage. As for Mulan, even the small action of when she buys a spirited horse, ... she buys a saddle ...
she buys a bridle .... she buys a long whip. shows bravery because she had to sneak around her town
without anyone seeing her. If anybody saw her, they would realize what she was doing and her parents
would have found on immediately. Her bravery overcame the feelings of fear she may have felt, and
she stayed strong and fought for twelve years. Both women were brave as an attempt to care for their
parents and their families. Even though fighting a serpent and fighting in a battle may have been risky,
the two women fought their hardest for the benefit of their families. The two women were courageous
because they faced danger and overcame it, even though this might have been difficult. Both women
value bravery and family matters because of their fearless mind sets.
Chi Li values honesty while Mulan values secrecy. When Chi Li says to her parents, Father and
Mother, I want you to know that I have decided to place myself into the hands of the county
authorities and to volunteer to

What Is The Myth Of Sisyphus
The bus was silent, no one daring to speak. We had just suffered the first loss in more than 10 years to
one of the competing schools to make it to the state tournament for tennis. This bus ride home from
the tournament in Green Bay gave me sufficient time to reflect on my matches and on the sport as a
whole.
Tennis is a sport of repetition. You play points over and over again until a match is complete, matches
until a tournament is complete, and then the whole process repeats a couple weeks later. This
reminded me of the myth of Sisyphus. Sisyphus was a kind who upon his death was tasked with
rolling a boulder up a hill. However, as soon as he pushed the stone to the top it rolled back down to
the bottom and he had to start again. While this is seen as a punishment in the myth I see it as a
blessing. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In playing tennis I am essentially Sisyphus, repeating the same process over and over for hours and
then doing it again. This is a blessing because we have the free will to associate value to something
inherently valueless and put effort and time into it to make ourselves better. So by giving Sisyphus this
task to repeat endlessly for eternity, they actually blessed him by giving him something to attach
meaning to. In the same way tennis gives me something to attach meaning to and better myself
through a game that will not improve me academically or as a person. Tennis has given me something
to work and improve at and attach meaning to which fulfills me. I have tasked myself with the
unachievable goal of perfection and it has brought me more happiness and achievement than almost

New Labour Thatcherism Similarities
For many, New Labour possessed an abundance of similarities to the Conservative governments
previous to it, in particular the 1979 1990 party led by Margret Thatcher. These similarities are evident
in their continuation of Conservative policies and their abandonment of Labour policies that were
previously inherent to the party. It is important to note that I have interpreted warmed up as a term
describing New Labour s less confrontational style of governance in comparison to that of Thatcher.
This essay will be arguing that New Labour was more than warmed up Thatcherism, in fact, they
posed as an advancer of Thatcherism through their continuation of Thatcherite policies and their
decision to build upon them. To evaluate this point, it is necessary to define the origins of both New
Labour and Thatcherism. The 1997 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay about Mental Health Drugs
As the second decade of the 21st century progresses, the population approaches seven billion. With so
many people, how are people supposed to stand out in job applications, or catch the administrators eye
as he or she reads applications to highly prestigious colleges and universities? More and more people
are asking this question, and more and more people are finding help in a small pill. Originally
diagnosed for Alzheimer s disease and ADHD, these drugs are increasingly used off label in

Companies manufacturing these drugs then work around this by lobbying their drugs as cures for
Alzheimer, ADHD, ADD, dementia, dyslexia, and other cognitive defects. In the 1960s and 70s, the
military ordered amphetamines and shipped them out to soldiers in Vietnam as a stimulant to keep
them awake and aware for longer periods, while in the United States these amphetamines such as
methamphetamine and cocaine became a recreational drug used in parties and a way to be cool .
Compare this with today s cognitive enhancing smart drug, which is still an amphetamine: the military
is testing these smart drugs on soldiers to make them more effective with less sleep and prolonged
battle and in the States, people use them off label to avoid jetlag or to write 9 page papers in 2 hours.
In both these scenes, these drugs have received little coverage until they became popular and their
effects became realized. The effects of chronic, high doses of amphetamine are toxic; it can cause
psychosis, depression and cognitive deficits, which are sometimes irreversible , says Maia Szalavitz of
Time Magazine (Popping). Although Piracetam and Modafinil are not amphetamines, drugs like
Adderall and others used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are amphetamines
and are very popular in the cognitive enhancing world. That is why nootropics are dangerous;

Offshore Oil Drilling On The Environment
Offshore Oil Drilling If we do nothing, it doesn t matter how we feel. And that s exactly what oil
companies are banking on: out of sight, out of mind (Hart, 24). Petroleum is a naturally occurring oil
found under deep layers of rock ( oil drilling ). Oil drilling is when a pipe penetrates through these
several layers of rock in order to reach the petroleum oil underneath. This oil can then be purified or
turned into gasoline for energy use. Offshore oil drilling, like its name describes, is specifically oil
drilling on the ocean floor, away from a shore line. Offshore oil drilling provides one of the most

offshore oil drilling argue that it creates thousands of jobs, and that if offshore drilling were to end, the
revenue it creates would also come to an end. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, creation of

employees ranging from business management teams to the workers on the rig. If offshore oil drilling
were to come to a stop, thousands of people would lose their jobs, and raise the unemployment rate in
America. Furthermore, the profit and revenue offshore oil drilling creates would come to an end. For
example, tax returns, income to land and mineral owners, and access to domestic resources would all
stop. (Crawford et al. 69). With so much dependence on the revenue offshore oil drilling brings in, a
stop to the offshore drilling would leave citizens, dependent on these resources and incomes, left to
look for new jobs and new sources of income. Secondly, the opposition makes the argument that
offshore oil drilling is a crucial part of the U.S. economy, and many Americans are dependent on the
oil and gas generated from it. To start,

Trigger Warnings Examples
Trigger warnings are being enforced around America in hopes of improving the way college students
learn. Trigger warnings originated on the internet as a way to flag certain material that could be
harmful to others. Many professors are now pushing for trigger warnings as a way to warn students
that ideas within their material could offend or emotionally harm them. While they are being
implemented across the country, their effects on students are proving to be more harmful than helpful
because they often hinder students education rather than further develop it. Applying trigger warnings
may cause professors to choose to negatively alter their material in order to attempt to teach it without

They allow a colleges to coddle students. One instance of this can come from the article Con: Trigger
Warnings Impose Censorship in the Name of Sensitivity. Donald A. Downs, author and professor of
political science, law, and journalism at the University of Wisconsin, explains how trigger warnings
can negatively affect students. Downs states, Education should expose students to the depths of the
human condition, which unavoidably involves matters of good and evil, life and death. He then
claims, Trigger warnings assume that many students are not capable of handling the responsibilities of
adult citizenship. Students cannot possibly be expected to mentally or emotionally grow when they are
constantly being sheltered from the real world and all of its sometimes painful disputes. Trigger
warnings cater to the sensitive students and grant them no room to grow up on their own. Many
colleges are being overwhelmed by the positive effects that may come with trigger warnings, they
should heavily consider the negative ones as well. Enforcing trigger warnings in hopes of furthering
college education would unleash a surge of flaws into a school. Though trigger warnings may have
few upsides, if put into action they will prove themselves to be destructive to a school s learning

Summary Of The Dispossessed By Ursula Le Guin
My book The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin was written in 1974 Oregon. Ursula Le Guin was a
daughter of an anthropologist Alfred Louis Kroeber and a writer Theodora Krakaw. She was a talented
child, interested in biology and poetry. Her first science fiction story was published when she was 11,
in a magazine called Astounding Science Fiction . She finished Berkeley High School and completed
studies of French and Italian literature at the Radcliffe College and the Columbia University (Nixon).
In my opinion, Ursula K. Le Guin wrote her novel in order to show a totally different and intriguing
perspective of life. The book was written for people with an open mind, who are ready to consider an
absurd way of life and thinking. The author ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Le Guin requires the reader to think, and also it allows the reader to create his own opinion about the
events happening. Most of the book is not written in a way that condemns either of the leading
aspects: capitalism and anarchism. Instead of criticizing, Le Guin presents the facts, the events and
feelings of an anarchist. And now, by expressing feelings of an anarchist, a reader may say: Well, the
book is certainly one sided! . However, as the book is intended to be read by open minded humans,
who most often live in democratic/semi capitalist societies, we have an immediate bias towards
capitalism. The reason for presenting Shevek s point of view, according to me, is contrasting our own
capitalist, money centered thoughts. I think that the whole purpose of the book is challenging our
points of view and presenting some that we have never considered, nor thought of considering. The
value of the book is to make us more creative. The Dispossessed does not follow rules and it requires
the reader to question the rules, the government and social behaviors that we have been taught since
we were children. I find the book very interesting and intriguing. However, I cannot see any practical
implications for The Dispossessed , because it requires too much perfection and change from the
human race. It wants all humans to be equal like in communism, it wants them to benefit to society as
much as they can, it does not accept any laziness, authority,

The Center Can Not Hold My Journey Through Madness
Literature Review The Center Cannot Hold: My Journey Through Madness by Elyn R. Saks For this
literature review, I decided to read an autobiographical novel called The Center Cannot Hold at the
suggestion of my individual supervisor at Sharp Mesa Vista, who said it was the best first hand
account of schizophrenia that she had ever read. The novel tells the story of Elyn Saks lifelong
struggle with schizophrenia. For the most part, Elyn had a normal childhood with loving parents.
However, as early as the age of 8 years old she began to experience some early symptoms such as
intense compulsions, night terrors and even believing that houses were putting thoughts into her head.
At twelve years old she stopped eating properly and lost a lot of weight. Even at a young age, Elyn
believed that there was something terribly wrong with her and did her best to hide her condition from
her family. As a teenager Elyn briefly experimented with drugs and was sent by her parents to an
intense drug rehab after school program which taught her that psychotropic drugs of any kind are bad
and that any personal obstacle can be overcome with sheer force of will. In part due to this lesson that
Elyn learned early on, she spent decades resisting medications outright or secretly reducing her
dosages after agreeing to take medications. This reminded me of the importance of assessing the
meaning behind taking medications with clients. When Elyn went off to college at Vanderbilt, she

The Large Bathers Essay
Paul Cézanne was an Impressionist painter that helped bridge the gap between Impressionism and
Cubism. Both Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso said he was The father to us all .(Paul Cézanne, 2016)
Both artists took inspiration from the Cézanne s painting The Large Bathers and made paintings of
their own from the ideas Cézanne started.
The Large Bathers show us a scene of women bathing in a river. The colors we see are mostly blue
with some browns and greens mixed in. It s thought that this painting was unfinished as Cézanne died
in 1906, and you can see some of the figures in the bottom right seem incomplete. Matisse took the
idea of bathing women but added his own signature color schemes. In Bonheur de Vivre he used

The Consequences Of Video Games
In the modern gaming industry with main stream Role Playing Games (RPGs), the battle between the
two sub genres (Western RPGs and Japanese RPGs) have taken over the mass media discussions on

Despite this, there is the argument about the award shows that are exclusively for either Western or

dominating in the community and hence the market. In fact, The Game Awards is a show that uses an

In the same fashion of immersion, the use of expression through character customization and the

Collins dictionary defines A foible is a characteristic which someone has and is considered rather
strange, foolish or bad but which is also considered unimportant.
Tolerance:
It is the capacity to endure continued subjection to something such as a drug or environmental
conditions. In the technical sense, it is the ability or willingness to accept the existence of opinions or
behaviour that one dislikes or disagrees with.
Tolerance of foibles:
In life, we have to tolerate foibles of many others; but this tolerance may be a blessing or a curse,
depending upon the situation. The present article studies the tolerance of Rosie in R.K.Narayan s The
Guide and Rukmani in Kamala Markandaya s Nectar in a sieve. It tries to show how their tolerance ...

Rukmani in Kamala Markandaya s Nectar in a sieve:
M. K. Bhatnagar in his essay, Kamala Markandaya The insider outsider says,
The protagonist narrator Rukmani is caught in a hard peasant life; the vagaries of nature.
Rukmani, the heroine of Kamala Markandaya s Nectar in a sieve is a poor peasant woman and the
whole novel depicts the common dilemmas of misfortunes faced by ordinary peasants particularly the
tenant farmers. Rukmani has to face a lot of hardships; but she remains spiritually stoic and strong as
in the case of Rosie, because of the traditional attitudes and beliefs.
Rukmani s childhood marriage:
Rukmani is the fourth daughter out of six children of the village headman. The other three are Shanta,
Padmini and Thangam. As a young woman, she has her own dream of having a grand wedding for
herself. Unfortunately under the British rule her father s prestige was much diminished . Her parents
cannot afford the dowry for a more financially stable bridegroom. She is married at the age of twelve
only to an illiterate and landless tenant farmer, Nathan. After the marriage, she travels in a bullock cart
to reach her husband s home. To her bewilderment and disappointment she sees only a mud hut for
them to dwell in. Her dreams of a prosperous and grand life are shattered. She tries to conceal her
disappointment and discomfort by saying This mud hut, nothing but mud and thatch, was my home.
Her fear and fright vanish when she learns that the mud hut is built with

Private Schools And Public Schools
Brooke Ward
Mr. Falor
Gov/Econ
9 28 17
The government is the reason we have order, safety, schools, roads, and many more things that we don
t think too much about in our everyday lives. There are two branches of government the Democrats,
and the Republicans. Our president, Donald Trump, is a republican. He believes in more investment in
our military than our schooling. We already took a pay cut in our schooling system because of that,
and the money that is going towards our schools are either going to public or private schools. But is it
really necessary for the government to fund private schools when students already have to pay tuition?
The government should be funding more towards public schooling.
By funding private schools, what will happen to the public schools that rely on that money from the
government to provide an education to the students in their community? What if the public schools
close, and the only other option that is reasonably close is a private school? A lot of people cannot
afford the tuition cost of private schools. The average cost of a private elementary school in Michigan
is 9,000 dollars per year. When kids move up to high school the cost jumps up to 13,500 dollars per
year. (Average Private School Cost, 1) Most middle class families cannot afford the tuition, and also
any extracurricular activities such as volleyball, or track. The average person in Michigan makes about
73,000 dollars per year (pay scale, 1). Depending on how many kids

Mammal Exhalation Research Paper
A Mammal is a member of a large group of animals with warm blood, fur and the ability to produce
milk. Gas exchange in mammals occurs by the inhalation of oxygen and the exhalation of carbon
dioxide. As mammals inhale oxygen it passes through the trachea which is a long tube made out of c
shaped cartilage ring which widens and lengthens as the mammal inhales and goes back to its normal
shape when the mammal exhales. Inhalation is when the diaphragm relaxes releasing the pressure
inside the lungs which draws oxygen into the body through the mouth, down the trachea, bronchi
(tubes connecting to the trachea) and the bronchioles (small connecting tubes between the bronchi and
alveoli within the lungs). Exhalation is when it contracts and increases the pressure in the lungs

This means that before carbon dioxide can diffuse into the capillaries through the alveolus there must
be a low carbon dioxide concentration in the alveolus so that is can diffuse out of the blood into the
capillaries and into an alveolus (since diffusion is the movement of particles from an area of high to an
area of low concentration). This is the same for oxygen but in order for oxygen to diffuse into the
capillaries and then into the blood stream there must be a high concentration of oxygen in the
alveolus, from here the oxygen rich blood flows to the many places around the body where it is
needed. A ventilation system allows this process of diffusion of both gases to occur by getting rid of
the carbon dioxide in the alveolus and bringing in more oxygen. A sustainable blood flow is crucial for
Gas Exchange as it is the process of the diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from the blood
stream. The vast network of capillaries surrounding the alveolus ensures a continuous supply of blood
to carry the oxygen away. Within the blood is the presence of the respiratory pigment called
haemoglobin, this pigment binds with blood to increase the oxygen carrying ability of

Soldiers Give Their Lives to Their Country
Soldiers are willing to give their lives for their country; it does not matter where they are from, their
government, or if they even like their leader. If they are asked to fight they will fight, yet they leave so
much behind friends, family, loved ones, the safety of their homes. The Soldier by Rupert Brooke is a
short poem about the patriotism of English soldiers during WWI. The author uses very specific
diction, syntax, personification, and imagery to leave an impact on the reader and show what it means
to give back to your country. Diction and syntax are the base of all good poems, to convey emotion
and create a mood and tone of all writings. First of all Brooke say things like ¨her¨ in ¨The Soldier¨
rather than saying England. It shows his love and affection to the country; it brings up the point why
does he have so much patriotism what invoked this emotion and feeling in him to protect her ? The
diction the author chooses to use makes it seem as if England is a lover, or he has a lover in England
he is protecting. Brooke also has very powerful sentences due to the syntax of his words. He boldly
states If I should die . . . That there s some corner of a foreign field that is forever England. Rather
than saying If i die i ve left my mark The writer is almost saying that because he is from England and
loves it so much then were he dies is now also a part of England now. It s a very powerful statement;
the reader can almost hear the pride in the narrator s

Aurum Prep
Statement of Purpose
What is it that enables a trajectory changing education? At Building Excellent Schools, the answer is
rooted in sound and relentless execution on all the core fundamentals of running a school, i.e. the
academic program, school culture, and operations. At Educate78, the answer is rooted in designing a
school experience for students that is authentic to a particular community and also allows for deeper
learning. As a lead petitioner in the process of founding a school and a fellow of each of these
organizations I have been fortunate enough to observe and learn from both viewpoints. I have come to
an understanding that both are true and not mutually exclusive. My goal is to soundly integrate the
best aspects of both models ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If we can execute on the mission of Aurum Prep, we will be a proof point for schools that help
students gain a deep understanding of themselves, their communities, and how to create a better
society. To build the foundation for this, we have already worked intently with families and
community members to understand what it is they want for their children upon graduation. After
hundreds of conversations, we know that the Oakland community seeks an interdisciplinary, identity
based curriculum to help students define who they are for themselves. In response, we have crafted
each year of our middle school to help our students to address fundamental questions like who am I?
Who are we (as a community)? Who am I becoming? We have developed the initial framework and
scope for the projects our students would complete, including engaging in a genealogy/ancestry
project and ultimately writing their own self determined autobiographies. I believe it would be
incredibly powerful to learn from High Tech High s project based learning approach to we continue to
design these learning experiences. Engaging in the Graduate School of Education would help us to
more fully flesh out critical aspects of our model like these.
The Graduate School of Education is committed to developing reflective practitioner leaders who are
working with colleagues and communities to create and sustain innovative, authentic, and rigorous
learning environments. I am a leader who is seeking to design a school that is committed to ensuring
equity for all children in East Oakland. While I have experience in the school design process, being
part of the GSE would ensure that our team is able to implement the aspects of our school design that
will ensure an equitable learning for all of our

  • 2. Free Radical Research Paper Free radicals are groups of atoms, molecules, or ions that possess an unpaired/unshared valence electron in their electron orbitals. Due to this, many radicals are very reactive because they want to reach a stable state. They can be classified as oxidants or reductants depending on whether they accept electrons from other atoms or donate atoms. Free radicals can be produced by natural processes such as metabolism. They are also generated from foods that we eat, water, medication, etc. Free radicals are essential to the human body because they are important components of the immune system and they also assist the body with the production of chemical energy. However, they can be dangerous. A free radical can take an an electron from another ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. To Kill a Mockingbird Essay examples Children look up to their elders for wisdom and advice. They rely on someone experienced and with authority for guidance on how to live their lives. However, sometimes the people who are accountable for youth mislead them; they may have good intentions, but are not mature enough to exemplify their values and morals, or they simply are ignorant. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Aunt Alexandra plays a negative role: she is a proper, southern lady with a strict code of behaviour and etiquette, but is too closed minded and obstreperous to change her ways or view the world from others perspectives. Calpurnia takes on the position of a positive role model by disciplining the children in the Finch household. Miss Maudie takes on the role of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Lee, 224 225). These words indicate not only a vituperative nature, but arrogance and obstinacy. She believes white people are better than black people. She refuses to consider anything positive about people she finds reprehensible; she is steadfast on her opinions about people and would rather not get to know them. She is also quite domineering and officious; she often meddles with Atticus fatherly role: ...it s bad enough he lets you all run wild... (Lee, 83), Aunt Alexandra put him up to this... (Lee, 134). This grandiloquence is a manifestation of hypocrisy in the novel because her behaviour towards others is atrocious, yet she expects the best manners from Scout. Calpurnia is a much more positive caregiver, as she is a strict disciplinarian, but to a lesser degree than Aunt Alexandra. Likewise she is not a hypocrite; she could comment on the ways of white people because she has been raised in a white environment. I ve spent all my days workin for the Finches or the Bufords... Nuclear Warfare And Its Effects On The World In early August 1945, President Harry Truman approved for two nuclear bombs, uranium 235 and plutonium 239, made by the United States of America and the United Kingdom, to be dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki bringing the Second World War to an abrupt end. On the first day of the bombing, each city lost an estimate of at least one half of their population. During the following months, between 150,000 and more than 246,000 deaths occurred from the effect of burns, radiation sickness, and other injuries, compounded by illness brought on by the nuclear effects. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is just one example of the many nuclear weapons in the world. Nuclear warfare is caused by a military conflict or a political strategy in which one uses nuclear weaponry to inflict damage upon the opponent. Some believe that politicians and military personnel only want to possess nuclear weapons because of the heightened sense of power and feeling of security. It s scary to think that the human race is in the hands of the people who own these weapons. The effects of nuclear use can be divided into four categories: instantaneous, near immediate, short term, and long term. The heart of a nuclear explosion reaches temperatures over a several million degree centigrade resulting in a heat flash over a wide area that vaporizes all human tissue. At Hiroshima, within a radius of half a mile, the only remains of most of the people caught in the open were their shadows burnt into stone. The near immediate effects are the people inside buildings or otherwise shielded, will be indirectly killed by the blast and heat effects as buildings collapse and all inflammable materials burst into flames. The immediate death rate will be over 90%. Outside the area of total destruction will be survivors. As President Mckinley condition stabilized, post being shot, Vice President Theodore Roosevelt embarked to view the vastness of nature in the less developed west. His trip was cut short, as he got word that Mckinley s condition had turned for the worse. Mckinley was pronounced dead September 14, 1901; subsequently, Roosevelt was sworn into the presidency, along with his progressive views. Although this was not the start of the conservation and preservation movements, extended from the late 19th through the early 20th century, it was a major step for the movement as Roosevelt had empathy for activists and nature. The combination of a movement and a president who was willing to move resulted in five national parks and 18 national monuments being established by the end of Roosevelt s presidency. After the establishment of these parks, the lands were to be preserved by federal government, but the political and economical agendas of those opposed to the conservation and preservation movements still endangered the pristine land. The fact that it took a president to get assassinated, before any serious legislative help came to aid the conservation and preservation movements. Japan s The Soviet War wThe shift in policy (the reinterpretation of Article 9 and what is the changes) would mean Japan could assert itself as a military power in the region and expand its influence globally, as well as provide the U.S. with a string military ally that act as a counterweight against an increasingly aggressive China, Russia and North Korea. The controversy with remilitarization lies in Japan s constitution, which forbids Japan from having a military. After WWII, Japan s wartime atrocities were fresh on the mind of the Supreme Commander of Allied Powers, General Douglas MacArthur. In order to eliminate the possibility of Japan ever taking aggressive military action again, MacArthur and his senior officials wrote a new constitution for Japan, which pursued a number of reforms including disbanding the military. Specifically, Article 9 states (states the article 9 point). What is ironic is that even though the United States wrote Japan s pacifist constitution that disarmed the nation, the U.S. has been pushing for the remilitarization of Japan since the Cold War. In 1952, the two nations signed the U.S. Japan Peace Treaty, in which the U.S. recognized Japan s right to join in collective defence and its United Nations right to defend itself as a sovereign nation. Over the years, it has become evident that despite the benefits Japan has enjoyed from its peaceful constitution, the time has come for Japan to embody its right as a sovereign nation to provide its own defence. • 15. The Great Depression And President Roosevelt s New Deal The 1930s, historically remembered for the Great Depression and President Roosevelt s New Deal, demonstrated a time of great racial tension and segregation in America. Slavery dissolved and the Ku Klux Klan became less popular; the struggle of African Americans, however, was not over. Racial segregation thrived with half of African Americans out of work, their jobs transfered to whites who were struggling from the Great Depression ( Race During the Great Depression ). The New Deal, created to promote equality and produce jobs, proved largely ineffective on the front of desegregation, doing little to help the black American community. One place that African Americans were able to prosper: jazz. However, even the jazz community itself remained segregated. Racial prejudice came from both fronts: whites did not want to mix socially with Negroes, and blacks believed that when a Negro enters a White band, he loses his identity as a Negro musician ( DownBeat Dodges the Racial Issue ). Benny Goodman, however, broke this barrier, initially in 1935 with the first interracial jazz performance, and again in his 1938 Carnegie Hall concert featuring black musicians. Benny Goodman s career did not commence with the Trio s 1935 performance; a clarinet player from a young age, Goodman initiated his professional career in 1925 as a member of the Ben Pollack Orchestra. We are different, but we get judged, every day, every hour, every minute people judge you, on your appearance, on your style, on your attributes. Yet they don t even know you. It is proven that in the first few moments of meeting someone, we form an opinion of them. Our society s biggest downfall is that we define people on stereotypical judgements. One of the clearest examples in today s society is Donald Trump. He claims to ban all Muslims to enter the USA. That is a stereotypical judgment that he has towards Muslims. He believes all Muslims are terrorist, as per CNN report Islam is the fastest growing religion in the US; and according to their report, in the USA some top Doctors and Engineers believe in Islam. So where does he get his claims from? Why does he create these stereotypical judgements against them? Why can t he work along with them so that we can live in a better world? We judge people by their race, we judge people by where they come from, we judge people by the way they speak. Today, we say all Muslims are terrorist, well if that was the case, wouldn t all Christians be in the KKK, if this was true we would probably be dead. There are about 2 billion Muslims in the world, that s about 29% of the world s population; if they all were terrorists the odds of our survival are slim. The change in Griffin s character occurs due to his invisibility and the power it provides because there is no one, on this view, who is iron willed enough to maintain his morality and find the strength of purpose to keep his hands off what does not belong to him, when he is able to take whatever he wants from the market stalls without fear of being discovered, to enter houses and sleep with ... The absence of consequences strips away the good in Griffin s nature and fosters his madness as he starts stealing from the markets and begins his spree of breaking into houses. However, the invisibility that Griffin viewed as power ultimately is a poison as the invisible man must sacrifice greatly for his for his power. The invisible man schemes grand dreams that can be realized through his invisibility but discovers that no doubt invisibility made it possible to get them, but it made it impossible to enjoy them when they are got (Wells 121). Because of his invisibility, the invisible man finds himself ostracized, in a state of danger, and no longer able to enjoy everyday customs like eating lunch at a restaurant. • 19. Cannibalism And Its Impact On Society Introduction Throughout the course of our evolution hominids have engaged in, what today would be considered savage, inhumane practices, such as manslaughter, torture and mutilation (Lewis, Jurmain Kilgore, 2013). These actions today are considered almost taboo in society, however anthropologists who study such behaviour and historians who have meticulously documented it are completely comfortable divulging their work to the scientific community. Based on this acceptance, one would expect the topic of cannibalism to be met with the same understanding within academia. Astoundingly though, the discussion of cannibalism within our ancestral past encounters much controversy and is greatly looked down upon within the general population (White, 2001). For those who study this highly provocative practice, like paleoanthropologist Tim White, the idea of cannibalism is as significant to the holistic study of anthropology as the idea of evolution is to the study of creationism. This viewpoint is only one of many related to cannibalism today and is shared by a very small group of individuals. The thought of cannibalism within modern society though comes with so much displeasure to the point that conferences go to the length of entitling presentations such that the notion of one human being consuming another is eluded altogether. Empowerment Through Online Education In a 2007 report published by the Sloan Consortium, most universities stated that the main reasons they continued to expand their online education programs were because such programs improved student access to education. For example, when universities offer courses online, they can work around limited classroom space, instructor shortages, and conflicting course schedules to offer more students more classes. Similarly, in taking an online course that allows them to complete assignments at their own pace, students can work around their busy course and work schedules, as well as tailor their coursework to their own personal learning styles. While Dixie was agitated, firstly because of the Booker T. Washington dined at the White House and secondly was the victory of Jack Johnson. However, the blacks rejoiced all over the United States with this news. Roberts mentions about a journalist report, it stated that the genuine satisfaction the blacks experienced with the single victory of Johnson was not been observed in forty years. The author then mentions many industries concern about the blacks being enthusiastic to enter in boxing due to the triumph of Johnson, which may result in a shortage of labor. On the other hand, Jim Nasium a black writer counseled many young blacks to take up boxing as a serious profession, he believed that it is the boxing ring where blacks could face whites on an equal basis. There were many reports implicating that Johnson had kick started the revolution. According to the author, it started in August 1908, when Tommy Burns reached Perth. • 23. Voting Rights Young adults in current times have grown up with many rights that have not always been considered a right but instead a privilege. Voting is one of these rights that was once only considered a privilege, eligible for a particular gender and ethnicity. For many years this meant that the only group of people allowed to vote were white males. Today, things are different and everyone has the choice to vote after they reach the age of eighteen. The right to vote is a powerful right that we must take advantage of because not every country is lucky enough to have a say in their government. Today, in America we have the opportunity to decide if we would like to vote or not. Many Americans take pride in this right as it is considered a civic duty that has not always been eligible to everyone. One of the first changes in voting rights began with issuing literacy tests to limited individuals in hopes to earn a chance to vote. Specifically, the 1965 Alabama Literacy Test was given to African Americans before they were declared eligible to vote. This practice was intended to keep African Americans from having any input when it came to voting. The idea of this literacy test was to give African Americans the chance to earn the right to vote but, would not guarantee that right. We had just suffered the first loss in more than 10 years to one of the competing schools to make it to the state tournament for tennis. You play points over and over again until a match is complete, matches until a tournament is complete, and then the whole process repeats a couple weeks later. This reminded me of the myth of Sisyphus. Sisyphus was a kind who upon his death was tasked with rolling a boulder up a hill. And now, by expressing feelings of an anarchist, a reader may say: Well, the book is certainly one sided! . As discussed in an article called The Rise of Western RPGs by Stace Harman (2014), in the 1980s to early 1990s, Western RPGs developed a complex alignments system to help adapt the player ... • 44. Private Schools And Public Schools Brooke Ward Mr. Falor Gov/Econ 9 28 17 The government is the reason we have order, safety, schools, roads, and many more things that we don t think too much about in our everyday lives. There are two branches of government the Democrats, and the Republicans. Our president, Donald Trump, is a republican. He believes in more investment in our military than our schooling. We already took a pay cut in our schooling system because of that, and the money that is going towards our schools are either going to public or private schools. But is it really necessary for the government to fund private schools when students already have to pay tuition? The government should be funding more towards public schooling. By funding private schools, what will happen to the public schools that rely on that money from the government to provide an education to the students in their community? What if the public schools close, and the only other option that is reasonably close is a private school? A lot of people cannot afford the tuition cost of private schools. The average cost of a private elementary school in Michigan is 9,000 dollars per year. When kids move up to high school the cost jumps up to 13,500 dollars per year. (Average Private School Cost, 1) Most middle class families cannot afford the tuition, and also any extracurricular activities such as volleyball, or track. The average person in Michigan makes about 73,000 dollars per year (pay scale, 1). Depending on how many kids ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Mammal Exhalation Research Paper A Mammal is a member of a large group of animals with warm blood, fur and the ability to produce milk. Gas exchange in mammals occurs by the inhalation of oxygen and the exhalation of carbon dioxide. As mammals inhale oxygen it passes through the trachea which is a long tube made out of c shaped cartilage ring which widens and lengthens as the mammal inhales and goes back to its normal shape when the mammal exhales. Inhalation is when the diaphragm relaxes releasing the pressure inside the lungs which draws oxygen into the body through the mouth, down the trachea, bronchi (tubes connecting to the trachea) and the bronchioles (small connecting tubes between the bronchi and alveoli within the lungs). Exhalation is when it contracts and increases the pressure in the lungs pushing carbon ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This means that before carbon dioxide can diffuse into the capillaries through the alveolus there must be a low carbon dioxide concentration in the alveolus so that is can diffuse out of the blood into the capillaries and into an alveolus (since diffusion is the movement of particles from an area of high to an area of low concentration). This is the same for oxygen but in order for oxygen to diffuse into the capillaries and then into the blood stream there must be a high concentration of oxygen in the alveolus, from here the oxygen rich blood flows to the many places around the body where it is needed. A ventilation system allows this process of diffusion of both gases to occur by getting rid of the carbon dioxide in the alveolus and bringing in more oxygen. A sustainable blood flow is crucial for Gas Exchange as it is the process of the diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from the blood stream. The vast network of capillaries surrounding the alveolus ensures a continuous supply of blood to carry the oxygen away. Within the blood is the presence of the respiratory pigment called haemoglobin, this pigment binds with blood to increase the oxygen carrying ability of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Soldiers Give Their Lives to Their Country Soldiers are willing to give their lives for their country; it does not matter where they are from, their government, or if they even like their leader. If they are asked to fight they will fight, yet they leave so much behind friends, family, loved ones, the safety of their homes. The Soldier by Rupert Brooke is a short poem about the patriotism of English soldiers during WWI. The author uses very specific diction, syntax, personification, and imagery to leave an impact on the reader and show what it means to give back to your country. Diction and syntax are the base of all good poems, to convey emotion and create a mood and tone of all writings. First of all Brooke say things like ¨her¨ in ¨The Soldier¨ rather than saying England. It shows his love and affection to the country; it brings up the point why does he have so much patriotism what invoked this emotion and feeling in him to protect her ? The diction the author chooses to use makes it seem as if England is a lover, or he has a lover in England he is protecting. Brooke also has very powerful sentences due to the syntax of his words. He boldly states If I should die . . . That there s some corner of a foreign field that is forever England. Rather than saying If i die i ve left my mark The writer is almost saying that because he is from England and loves it so much then were he dies is now also a part of England now. It s a very powerful statement; the reader can almost hear the pride in the narrator s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Aurum Prep Statement of Purpose What is it that enables a trajectory changing education? At Building Excellent Schools, the answer is rooted in sound and relentless execution on all the core fundamentals of running a school, i.e. the academic program, school culture, and operations. At Educate78, the answer is rooted in designing a school experience for students that is authentic to a particular community and also allows for deeper learning. As a lead petitioner in the process of founding a school and a fellow of each of these organizations I have been fortunate enough to observe and learn from both viewpoints. I have come to an understanding that both are true and not mutually exclusive. My goal is to soundly integrate the best aspects of both models ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If we can execute on the mission of Aurum Prep, we will be a proof point for schools that help students gain a deep understanding of themselves, their communities, and how to create a better society. To build the foundation for this, we have already worked intently with families and community members to understand what it is they want for their children upon graduation. After hundreds of conversations, we know that the Oakland community seeks an interdisciplinary, identity based curriculum to help students define who they are for themselves. In response, we have crafted each year of our middle school to help our students to address fundamental questions like who am I? Who are we (as a community)? Who am I becoming? We have developed the initial framework and scope for the projects our students would complete, including engaging in a genealogy/ancestry project and ultimately writing their own self determined autobiographies. I believe it would be incredibly powerful to learn from High Tech High s project based learning approach to we continue to design these learning experiences. Engaging in the Graduate School of Education would help us to more fully flesh out critical aspects of our model like these. The Graduate School of Education is committed to developing reflective practitioner leaders who are working with colleagues and communities to create and sustain innovative, authentic, and rigorous learning environments. I am a leader who is seeking to design a school that is committed to ensuring equity for all children in East Oakland. While I have experience in the school design process, being part of the GSE would ensure that our team is able to implement the aspects of our school design that will ensure an equitable learning for all of our ...
