Common Core State Standards Essay
Since 2010, there were 45 states that have adopted the same educational standards called Common
Core State Standards (CCSS). The initiative is sponsored by the National Governors Association and
the Council of Chief State School Officers and seeks to establish consistent education standards across
the states. The Common Core Standards is initiative state led effort that established a single set of
clear educational standards for kindergarten through 12th grade in English and Mathematical
standards. These standards help to educate all of the students equally, they help children who move
from state to state, as well as they help to prepare students for college and workplace. The common
core standard helps to provide a clear understanding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Test scores are still dismissed, and state officials have expressed concern that the pace of improvement
is not fast enough to show the benefits of the common core standards. Districts have also seen varying
success in changing how teachers teach, something that was supposed to change under the new
standards. Standards were released for Mathematics and English language arts on June 2, 2010, with a
45 states adopting the standards in the consequential months. There was an incentive for the states if
they adopted the Common Core Standards. President Obama and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan
announced the Race to the Top competitive grants on July 24, 2009 as a motivator for educational
change. To be eligible, states had to adopt internationally benchmarked standards. Though states could
adopt other standards like college and career ready standards, the Common Core standards
automatically met the requirement. The governors and state schools chiefs funded development of the
Common Core Standards. (Melinda Gates Foundation, Pearson Publishing Company, the Charles
Stewart Mott Foundation) Though the Common Core State Standards do not cover science and social
studies content standards currently, the Next Generation Science Standards are in are the final stage of
being developed. They are not directly related to the Common Core, but their content can be
connected to the Mathematical and English Language Arts standards.

The Unique Language of Jamaica
Introduction
It is often said that Jamaicans have a unique language. Some may say Jamaicans do not have a
language of their own. Jamaicans official language however is Standard English. However there has
been much confusion in the language we speak because we sometimes or often times speak in what is
called Patois, Creole or even Ungrammatical English. This however is not considered a language.
Patois is not a native language, it is a second language. Patois is a combination of English and African
languages. Patois however reflects on the struggle and history of slavery and the ancestors. This
language however has an effect on Jamaica since being Jamaicans are descendants of Africa. Despite
the fact that patois is not Jamaicans native language it represents their culture and history. Patois have
been used in Jamaicans day to day life to communicate. However this is mostly used in casual
conversations. When having a formal conversation Standard English is used to communicate.
There are three types of patois. These three types of patois are basolet, mesolet and acrolet. Basolet is
the deep patois. This is where person speaks patois only. Acrolet is Standard Jamaican English. This is
where the person speaks only Standard English. As it relates to Mesolet this is a combination of patois
and Standard Jamaican English. Mesolet is however mostly used in present Jamaica.
Patois is still been used now in Jamaica even though Standard English should be used because of how
it was passed

The Choice And The Notebook
The purpose of this paper is to write about the similarities and difference of two movies: The Choice
and The Notebook. Nicholas Sparks really knows how to set a romantic/emotional, but also creates a
very predictable love story plot line. You could predict the ending before the movie started with only
knowing who the movie was based on a Nicholas Sparks novel. There is always a boy who falls for a
girl and has to work extremely hard to get her. Then, something happens, but in the end they are
always together. The Notebook and The Choice both show how life is about choices, you have to fight
for what you love, and the good guy wins; but, in The Choice the ending will leave you wanting to
know more about these characters and their story and that is why The ... Show more content on

In the movie The Notebook first released in 2004 that features actor Ryan Gosling and actress Rachel
McAdams; Internet Movie DataBase (IMDB) best describes the plot by saying, A poor yet passionate
young man falls in love with a rich young woman, giving her a sense of freedom, but they are soon
separated because of their social differences (IMBd). At the start of the movie, an elderly man begins
to read a love story from his notebook to a female patient. The love story takes place in 1940. He tells
the story how Allie and Noah fall in love over a summer. Then, her parents disapprove of her seeing
Noah. The two get into an argument and then decide to break up. The next day Allie is forced to go
without saying goodbye to him, she later starts school in New York. Although Noah seemed fine when
he left that night, he was devastated and ends up writing Allie a letter each day for a year. She never
received the letters because of her mother. Noah ends up going to battle in WWII and Allie becomes a
nurse for wounded soldiers. She ends up meets a more wealthy young man who later she becomes

Seneca Creation Myths
Humans have an innate need to understand how the world began and how they fit into the cosmic
pattern. Creation myths provide many of these answers and serve to establish a foundation upon which
a people can develop their world according to their expectations. For the Seneca, the genesis of their
existence started on a utopian world in the sky. The sky world is part of the Seneca s unseen world. An
argument could be made for its strong correlation to the concept of heaven found in many religions.
The sky world, similar to the Christian Garden of Eden, contained a powerful tree of life which
sustained a world teeming with life including beings. One day, the tree was uprooted and pushed
through a hole in the sky in order to create a new world ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She was also pushed into the hole so that she could populate the watery world below. Even though she
was transitioning between an unseen world and what would become the Earth, she, all the birds and
animals that aided her upon her arrival and helped create the land, and her subsequent family members
remained in the unseen world and became architects of the seen world. Eventually, the woman gave
birth to a daughter who, as a grown woman, became pregnant with twin boys after entering the water.
The boys were at odds even before their births and indeed the manner of their births would cement
their destinies. The first twin arrived in the traditional manner, but his impatient brother tore his way
out of his mother s side which resulted in her death. Her burial, though, was the fodder for nourishing
plants for the soon to be created humans of the seen world. Appropriately, the first twin was named
Good Spirit while his brother was called Bad Spirit. Good Spirit created humans and everything they
would need to survive and live in comfort. Bad Spirit looked for ways to thwart his brother and to
espcecially cause strife for

The Australian Constitution
The Australian Constitution was drafted at a series of constitutional conventions held in the 1890s. It
was passed by the British Parliament as part of the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act 1900
and took effect on 1 January 1901. The Constitution is the legal framework for how Australia is
governed and it can only be changed by referendum.
A constitution is a set of rules by which a country or state is run.
Some countries have unwritten constitutions which means there is no formal constitution written in
one particular document. Their constitutional rules are derived from a number of sources. Britain
sources its constitution from a number of important statutes, or laws, as well as principles decided in
legal cases and conventions. New Zealand and Israel are two other countries that do not have formal
written constitutions.
Other countries have formal written constitutions in which the structure of government is defined and
the respective powers of the nation and the states are written in one single document. These systems
may also include unwritten conventions and constitutional law, which can inform how the constitution
is interpreted. Australia, India and the United States are examples of countries with a written
constitution.
Some constitutions may be amended without any special procedure. The documents that make up the
New Zealand Constitution may be amended simply by a majority vote of its Parliament. In other
countries a special procedure must be followed

Essay on Arctic and Alpine Soils
Arctic and Alpine Soils
Proposal
(Ant)arctic (high latitude) and alpine (mountain) areas are affected by relatively similar climates, as
latitude and altitude produce similar meteorologic effects. In these geographic regions where
temperature is at such a pronounced extreme, climate would seem to be the leading factor of soil
development. It is my goal in this research paper to answer the following question: How do the soils
of arctic and alpine areas differ? This idea, taken largely from an abstract by Birkeland (1975), will be
explored through the comparison of the soils of these two geographic regions, and an analysis of the
soil development factors in those environments.
Introduction
Both high latitude and high altitude ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However inaccurate as Dokuchaev s generalization may be, a critique of his proposal provides an
excellent tool to examine and compare the soils of similar Arctic and Alpine regions.
Similarity in Arctic and Alpine Geographic Regions
There are pedologic cases in which one of the five soil forming factors established by Jenny (192?) is
so prominent and effectual that it outweighs the sum of all of the other factors, resulting in the
definition of different soil series almost wholly upon differences in that dominant soil forming factor.
For example, in the Carleton Arboretum, our Soils class found that the differences in soil series were
defined mostly on the basis of parent material. Most groups had a direct correlation between the
distribution of soil types and the distribution of parent materials.
In the case of Arctic and Alpine* soils, it is climate which largely outweighs all of the other soil
forming factors. As previously stated, the intense cold associated with high latitudes and high altitudes
separates Arctic and Alpine areas from other geographic regions of Earth. I believe that upon this basis
Dokuchaev made his analog between horizontal and vertical zonality of soils. Through an examination
of a number of Arctic and Alpine soils and the pedogeneses of such soils, I aim to expand and adjust
his hypothesis, as I feel he did not understand fully the complexity of Alpine

DISCUSS THE CHALLENGES ASSOCIATED WITH BIODIVERSITY LOSS FOR 21ST
CENTURY CONSERVATION BIOLOGISTS AND SOCIETY AS A WHOLE
Although sustainable development has been at the forefront of international agenda for many years,
we continue to focus on the growth of the economy without worrying about the impact on the
environment. Currently, our ecological footprint (the area in hectares that we require to provide us
with the ecological goods and services we use) is far exceeding our biocapacity (the actual land
available to provide these services); with the human population requiring over 1.5 earths to sustain the
amount of resources we use each year (WWF, 2014). As the growth of the human population shows no
sign of slowing down, with predictions there will be a further 2.4 billion people on the planet by 2050
(WWF, 2014), the pressures we exert on the planet will only increase. This overuse of resources is not
only making it difficult to support our needs, but is also leaving little space and resources left for all
the other species around the globe to thrive, and more importantly, survive. This has led to a decline in
biodiversity at a much faster than would be seen under natural circumstances.
According to the Living Planet Index (LPI); which measures the trends in 10,380 populations of 3,038
species of fish, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds; biodiversity has been decreasing rapidly,
with records showing a 52% reduction in the size of these populations from 1970 2010

Insanity In The Tell Tale Heart
Edgar Allan Poe uses symbolism, conflict, and setting to construct the effect of insanity in the narrator
of The Tell Tale Heart. To begin with, Poe uses imagery to help demonstrate symbolism; as he states,
The disease had sharpened my senses not destroyed not dulled them, it tells the reader that most of the
information was transmitted by his senses. For instance, on page 92 the narrator describes how the old
man s eye resembled of a vulture through sight and this creates a situation where the reader shifts into
the narrator s shoes. Through the mind of the narrator shows how the eye triggers a negative feeling
and it might be the fear of death as vulture s prey on the sick and dead. The passage Whenever it fell

Wind, Earthquake And Its Effect On The Earthquake Essay
Unlike wind, earthquake is a different phenomenon which generates a ground motion. The intensity or
acceleration of the earthquake depends upon the magnitude and location of its epicenter. The seismic
waves caused by the earthquake cause inertial forces in the building. The inertial forces are created
when an outside force tries to move a body in rest which happens in this case as seismic waves tries
the move the building in rest. We all know that when a building is subjected to inertial forces it should
obey the newton s second law of motion.
F=M.a (3)
Where F is inertial force and M denotes mass of building and a is the acceleration with which the
building is moved due to seismic activity.
Duration, velocity and displacement:
From the newton s second law, it is evident that acceleration is a key factor in determining the forces
on a building. But there is one more criteria that we have to look into is the duration of the earthquake.
Earthquake that has moderate acceleration, sustained over time, can cause much more damage to
buildings than a single much larger peak. It weakens the building structure and reduces its durability.
The strong motion duration is often termed as bracketed duration (Arnold 2013). This is the shaking
duration above a certain threshold acceleration value, which is 0.05g, and is defined as the time
between the first and last peaks of motion that exceeds this threshold value (Arnold 2013). The strong
motion

Strip Searches Persuasive Essay
Strip Searches Should Be Illegal Ontario police officers often search civilians for evidence of a crime
and they employ various methods to do so. However the method of using a strip search has become
outdated and unnecessary in modern society. It is time for the practice of strip searching people to be
stopped by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), even if it is a justified search. The people of Canada
should be protected from these searches as they have the right to privacy and protection from invasive
search practices. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms even has a section on protecting against
unreasonable searches , found in section 7 of the charter. If that is the case, why should the OPP be
allowed to infringe on our rights through strip searches? The fact that in a modern society an illegal
method of searching civilians is still being used is ridiculous. We have the technology to find and use
less invasive methods of searching people that also abide by the law. The strip search, being such an
invasive form of searching someone is humiliating and subjecting people to it should be stopped.
There was a ruling in 2001 by the Supreme Court of Canada, which said that it was humiliating. The
exact quote was Strip searching is inherently humiliating and degrading, the Supreme Court of Canada
ruled in a landmark case 15 years ago, and should only be done when there are reasonable grounds
(Jacques). The fact that a strip search is humiliating means that as a society we

Stereotypes Of International School Students
With a growing demand for international schools worldwide, is there really that much of a difference
in the character outcomes of students studying there? Many perceive international school students to
be bratty, rebellious students. This stereotype, however, is clearly false. International school students
are simply foreign or local students sent to international schools to receive education for various
reasons. There is no solid evidence that all of them are spoilt brats. It is inevitable that there are
students with poor attitudes, but this is represented by the minority. Thus, the title should not be given
to the whole cohort.
Firstly, it is true and inevitable that there exist students who display poor attitudes. These cases are
present in every school. Students attitude and view on things are mostly based on their upbringing.
The way they were brought up at home since young is a major factor as to how they act in the future.
Of course, peer pressure may ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is an incorrect and unfair assumption as firstly, international school students, as the name
suggests, are foreign students coming from many parts of the world, including China, Japan, America
and so on. Some studying in international schools may also have dropped out from local schools in
search of a better study courses to offer. I have seen cases of my seniors transferring to international
schools because they could not cope with the pace of learning despite having already dropped from
the IP stream to the O level stream in local schools. Thus, I feel that international school student
should not be generalized as Caucasians who do not care much about studying. Yet again, not all
Caucasians do not bother about their studies. They are just given more breaks from studying and don t
necessarily have a competitive mindset to strive to achieve the best

Immanuel Kant Vs Foucault
This piece will begin with the immortal words of Immanuel Kant: Reason does not work instinctively,
but requires trial, practice, and instruction in order to gradually progress from one level of insight to
another . The definition of reason according to Immanuel Kant is that it is a wave, a never ending
influence that is continually constructing and improving previous perceptions on knowledge. When
referring to the Enlightenment in the following piece, the time period that involved a massive
intellectual and rational movement that took Europe by storm in the 18th century is to be considered.

the 20th century French philosopher, titled An answer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By observing the Age of Enlightenment, we can see the influence of the added application of reason
that was used to free cities from the historically pressed minority ordeal. Countless scientific
breakthroughs occurred and many new ideas were formulated as a result of individuals making use of
their own reason without direction from someone else, all in a matter of a few years. The influence of
the Enlightenment thinking is shown by Foucault to have travelled much further than its time period;
influencing recent thought processes such as the modernist movement. Therefore, it can be said that
the Enlightenment can be considered the age of reason because, for the first time, numerous
individuals were able to reason for themselves by the loosening of the grip of minority and as a result,
the root of many modern concepts and ideas as well as modes of thinking are found in this precise

Teamwork Reflection
For our teamwork presentation this week, diving into the concept of teamwork and how to build and
collaborate as an efficient team, we found a different sense of unity and collaboration that we were
unaware of before the preparation for our presentation. For our team s main topics, we covered the
differences between a team and a group, and the vague similarities between the two. From the
textbook comparisons, we consider ourselves a team rather than a group of people because of our
common goals before our presentation date. We were all working together to collaborate and got our
ideas across to the class to present a topic that is both interesting and informative to our fellow
classmates. A team is described as a group of people that all work towards a common goal and have
objectives to work towards together, rather than individuals coming together to perform and complete
their individual goals. The roles that the members of our team performed were a complete
collaboration of ideas and thoughts. We spoke together and did not believe that there was any set
person that performed more or less than others within the group. We each put our thoughts together
and created a lesson plan for the class and broke into where we felt each of our strengths were for the
lesson plan of our presentation. Jordan introduced the chapter and how it was relevant to the class, as
well as concluded the presentation. Alexa brought her teaching skills to light by explaining the activity
through our lesson plan and assigned groups to go to their allotted location around the room.
Following that, Nhi, Meredith and Indrit provided examples of their knowledge for our fellow peers
and giving them a better understanding of the curriculum in the textbook and how we chose to relate it
to our activity in the classroom. All in all, we performed as a team and built our lesson plan based on
our strengths and weaknesses as a collaborating machine in our communication class. The norms that
were established even before our group began, was to ensure that we were all timely about
communicating with one another and to make ourselves available to give us enough time to complete
the presentation in a timely manner. Other norms include constantly being

I ve only been doing it for a short time, but in the scenarios that I ve handled, majority of those texting
in were a part of a traditional nuclear family with a majority of the crises directly involving the
familial unit which is the foundation of Carter and McGoldrick s family life cycle model (1988).
Family stress and transitions are extremely impactful to an individual s growth and well being, with
disruptions in the life cycle creating dysfunction (Carter McGoldrick, 1988). I communicate primarily
with teenagers, those in the adolescent stage, who at this point desire more independence and less
family involvement in their day to day lives. During this stage, the parent child relationship is truly
tested because the parent still wants to assert their dominance and authority while the child wants to
have the freedom to explore the world around them and try new things so that they are able to uncover
who they really are as individuals. This tug of war creates conflict and tension which affects the
family as a whole as well as the adolescent child. Texters often discuss experiencing horizontal or
predictable and unpredictable real life events that exert stress on every person involved. Examples of
horizontal stressors include the decision of their parents to divorce, having to move away from their
friends and start over in a new place, or the loss of a parent s job and the impact of the financial strain
associated with it (Carter McGoldrick, 1988). Many of the individuals who text in eventually share
that their parents are directly affected by the stressor and aren t handling it well, possibly due to
behaviors passed on to them by their parents, lack of support, or lack of coping skills and will take that
stress out on their child or children. The assertion of power creates a dysfunctional environment to live

Service Learning Should NOT be Mandatory For College...
Service learning is the name for forcing college students to do volunteer work as part of their college
careers. The hope is that this volunteer work will give students a better sense of civic duty, and thus,
be a worthy addition to college curriculums. However, this idea relies on the faulty premise that if one
is forced to volunteer that one will derive the same benefits as someone who does it out of their own
desire to help. Mandatory service learning will not have the desired effect, and should not be forced
upon students.
It is perhaps intuitive to think that by making students help others there will be a net positive; there
could be no downside to volunteering time and effort to help the community. However, a more

However, to a company their time is money. If a company is forced to give its time and resources to
volunteer, it might as well give money instead. That money, in the form of taxes, is already paid by
both companies and individuals to the government. That money, in turn, should be used to help
communities when needed. If communities need extra help, the answer is increasing taxes to provide
that extra help. Forcing college students to provide that help directly ignores the efficiencies gained
from specialization. A college student, who isn t even studying whatever field is needed, would be
able to help more by working in their actual field for money, and then giving that money to a
specialist, via the government, to provide the direct help. The only problem with that arrangement is
that it doesn t provide the positive feelings that directly helping would. However, gaining a positive
sense of accomplishment at the expense of providing less efficient help is a purely selfish motivation.
In the case of labor being needed that almost anyone could do, there is an even greater gain in having
the public at large finance the work instead of doing it directly. Instead of having a college student
learn about basic construction, which he will likely never use again in his career, wouldn t it make
more sense to pay someone local to the community to do the work instead? That way, not only is the
work done, but

The Study Of The Theory Of International Relations
The study of international relations takes a vast spectrum of theoretical approaches. A theory of
international relations is a collection of concepts that delineate how the international system operates
(SparkNote on International Politics, 2010). Contrary to an ideology, a theory of international studies
is endorsed with solid evidence. This essay will focus on two dominant theories of International
Relations (IR), namely realism and liberalism to decide for this matter on the more pragmatic one for
the study of IR. According to realism, states work only to gain more power relative to that of other
states (Donelan: 1990:23). Liberalism matured in the 1970s as some scholars generated arguments that
realism was defunct. With the rise of globalization, the immediate increase in communications
technology, and the expansion of international trade meant that states could no longer be dependent on
complete power politics to resolve matters (Lawson, 2015:96). ... Show more content on

Anthropogenic Noise Pollution And Its Effects On Cetaceans
Anthropogenic Noise Pollution and Its Effects on Cetaceans
Cetaceans use sound extensively in both communication, hunting, and navigation. However as
humanity continues to make use of the ocean we are constantly filling it with equipment that produces
high amounts of sound. These devices are starting to have an impact on cetaceans worldwide, from
mass strandings often linked to military exercises to area denials caused by busy commercial shipping
lanes and seismic surveys. If consideration is not taken towards this problem now it could develop into
something that could have degrading effects on cetacean populations in the future. Sound waves are
nothing more than an energy transfer through a medium be it through a liquid, solid, or a gas. Sound
pressure or intensity is measured on logarithmic scale in decibels dB which increases on an order of
magnitude. For instance a quiet conversation would be around 30 dB and whereas the human pain
threshold would be just over 100 dB. While the pitch or frequency of the sound is measured in hertz or
Hz, the higher the hertz the higher the pitch of the sound and vice versa (Hildebrand, 2004).
Anthropologic noise pollution can come from many different sources, some of the more common ones
are commercial shipping, acoustic deterrent devices, military sonar, and explosives (used in some
seismic surveys for oil and gas as well as military exercises). The main focus will be on military sonar
use, seismic surveys, and acoustic deterrent

Two Point Threshold Lab Report
In this experiment, the two point threshold, or smallest separation of two points of stimulation on the
skin that are perceived as two separate impressions of touch, was measured using the method of limits.
The purpose of this experiment was to determine the participant s two point threshold on their finger,
forearm, palm, and back. The identification of the stimulus is due to a variety of somatosensation
mechanoreceptors, meaning they sense touch in response to a mechanical stimulation or pressure,
which are located all over the body. When pressure is placed upon the epidermis (outermost layer of
skin), different receptors respond to that pressure which is felt through vibrations. There are four types
of mechanoreceptors: Merkel complexes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ascending trials for each body part, with the exception of the second trial of the forearm, did not
vary far from the mean threshold. When the second trial of forearm stimulation was given to the
participant, there was a point in time (near the middle of administration) in which the experimenter
accidentally placed the dial caliber tips onto the participant s skin at two separate times. This caused
the participant to report feeling the stimulus as separate earlier than she did in the first and third
forearm trials. Because of this error, the mean two point threshold of the forearm was not as reliable as
it could have been had there been no error in the deliverance of stimuli. The purpose of this lab was, in
fact, achieved and the participant s two point threshold means were calculated. The errors of this
experiment could have been avoided by utilizing computer/mechanical stimulation as opposed to a
dial caliper. Using a machine to administer the touch would ensure that the pressures as well as the
timing and placement of each tip on the caliber were exactly the same. It is also important to note that
the temperature of the dial caliber could have had an effect of the collection of data. At various points
throughout the experiment, the participant jumped at the chilling temperature of the metal caliber.
With each startle of the participant, the experimenter had to remove and then re place the stimulus
onto the participant s skin to attempt an accurate reading. In future experiments, it is important to

Outdoor Public Spaces
A 2 year study conducted by Valentine (2004) examined parental views in regard to children using
outdoor public spaces for play. Through her research Valentine came across parents concern about
child abduction as, 63% of parents believed it was strangers that would carry out child abduction. Due
to this belief, parents were less likely to allow their child the privileged to play outdoors as they feared
their child would be abducted, which may have resulted in the decline in outdoor play over the years.
However, Gill (2007) argues that a child is more likely to be harmed by a trusted adult in private
rather than a stranger in their community.
To add to this, it can be an advantage for children to play away from adult supervision, for example
playing outdoors without the adult over the child s shoulders constantly disrupting their play. Through
this, a child can obtain independent mobility, in which they can explore the environment on their
terms and create own identities (Armitage, 2004). This could be an implication for early years
practitioners, as part of their job role in early years is to supervise all the children within the class,
therefore adult supervision is needed within the early years when children are playing outdoors. ...

Adults role in play can be an important factor for young children as adults provide children with
opportunities to take part in the play as well as affecting children s play. Adults can affect what a child
may or may not experience through giving permission. Relating this back to young children playing
outdoors in public spaces, the adult may not authorise permission for young children to play in public
spaces. Through this young children will not be able to experience what they would in a public
outdoor space, compared to a closed outdoor

Essay about Shyamalan s The Sixth Sense
Shyamalan s The Sixth Sense
With reference to two scenes from Shyamalan s The Sixth Sense examine the way in which the
audiences perception of the film changes having viewed its dramatic ending. Evaluate the importance
of the two scenes in the film as a whole.
When the dramatic conclusion of Shyamalan s The Sixth Sense has been viewed the audiences
perception changes. They start to understand how different techniques have been used to create the
illusion that Dr Malcolm Crowe is alive and how Shyamalan s has duped his audience. The Sixth
Sense is initially set up as a thriller before evolving into a surprisingly touching psychological drama
with supernatural overtones. Shyamalan is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It appears that we have come in in the middle of a scene and any conversation has already taken place.
The tension that is portrayed in this scene makes the audience feel that Crowe is not welcome and that
is one of the reason why they are sat in silence waiting for Cole. The positioning of the chairs also
makes the viewer think that some form of communication has taken place. Lynn Sear s body language
is also expressive of the tension and uncomfortable ness of the room. She looks down at her hands and
picks at her nails. It shows that she is anxious and worried. The audience may also feel slightly
inferior to Crowe and she does not know what to say. This gives the audience the impression that this
is an everyday situation but one that is knew to Lynn Sear. The first time viewer witnesses nothing out
of the ordinary.
When Cole arrives home from school he stops dead in the doorway. The audience presumes that this is
from a range of mixed emotions and feelings. Cole appears to be scared and shocked, there is also a
slight look of betrayal on his face. This could be because his mother has invited Dr Crowe into their
home. This is meant to be his place of sanctuary and it has been invaded. Once again the first time
viewer feels the uncomfortable tension in the den of the Sear household.

Thrice Running Away Analysis
Chapter Four Analysis of Runaway in the Perspective of Deleuze s Post structuralism
4.1 Analysis of Thrice Running Away Some Other Elements in Runaway from the Perspective of
Rhizome
Alice Munro is claimed to be the best fiction writer now working in North America and her Runaway
is regarded as a marvel. She is a master in the field of short novel writing. However, her short stories,
usually within forty or fifty pages, can cover a content of that of long novels. They are condensed long
novels. In her novels, there are human mysteries, suspense, thrilling unexpectedness of real life and all
these elements keep her readers glued in her hands. (Munro, 2004: 3) The author believe the
complexity and uncertainty are the charms that made Munro s stories fascinating. And that the
absolutely black and white mode or tree like mode of theories would find it difficult to deal with
Munro s stories. On the contrary, Deleuze s concept of rhizome would probably be the helpful toolbox
that can be applied to analyze Munro s stories. We people want an order and as a result we create the
hierarchy system, a tree system but that is not the reality. The reality goes like a rhizome. Reality is
much more complex than the black and white mode or the tree like mode. ... Show more content on

Three minutes later, Brady again led his team down the field scoring a touchdown and then converting
the 2 point conversion, 28 20 Falcons. The Falcons responded with a great drive thanks to Julio Jones

In other words, one can say that Super Bowl LI kind of symbolizes the war. In the beginning of the
war Germany was riding a hot hand in Adolf Hitler. Hitler was dominating all of Europe with ease just
like Matt Ryan in the first half. The young power dominated the allies up until they woke the the
sleeping beast, the USA. Right before entering the war the US was experiencing the Great Depression.
Just like at halftime when the Patriots faced the largest deficit in Super Bowl history. On December 7,
1941, the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor which inspired many Americans to fight. Many believe that the
day the US joined the war was the turning point for the war. The turning point for the Patriots might
have been the scoreboard in a sense. Looking up at that scoreboard could ve dropped a bomb on the
Patriots sideline. Instead of feeling sorry for themselves both the soldiers and players got fired up and
wanted to make a difference. Which is also a key trait to being an American, persevering through
hardships no matter what. In the movie, Rocky the main character says, It s not about hard you get hit.
It s about how hard you can get hit and get back up. This quote completely sums up both American
soldiers and the Patriots

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows
Wide Reading Interview with Protagonist
Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows (fantasy) JK Rowling
Interviewer: Greetings Harry Potter. I am an interviewer for The Daily Prophet and I am intending to
make this interview, the biggest news in the wizarding world! During this session, l would like to ask
you questions about your adventure to defeat Voldemort. When you first started out in Hogwarts, you
knew that you were the one to defeat Voldemort, but seeing the mission that Dumbledore left for you,
what did you think of embarking on that treacherous journey?
Harry Potter: Well, I always knew that Dumbledore had hope and faith that I would succeed in that
journey to defeat Voldemort, but he left me with nothing. He did not leave me with anything, only a
few scraps of advice and he expected me to fulfil his wish! There were horcruxes, which were objects
that protected Voldemort s soul, and to kill him, I would have to destroy them all. Dumbledore did not
tell me where the horcruxes were and I had to cluelessly figure it out for myself. I had Ron and
Hermione though. I knew they would help me, and I knew that I had to destroy Voldemort to set the
wizarding world free from his terror. I had to do it, because nobody else was going to do it.
Interviewer: During your time hiding from Voldemort and his followers, what precautions did you
have to take, what were your struggles and what were your feelings during this time?
Harry Potter: It was a massive struggle I have to say.

Building Healthier Relationships With Diverse Students
Looking at ways to build healthier relationships with the individuals you work with and interact with
on a daily basis, one can refer to a training model presented by Bernstein Yamashiro Noam. According
to Bernstein Yamashiro Noam (2013), helping administrators work with teachers to define boundaries
and relationships with students can help cultivate healthier relationships with their students.
Coinciding with this theory, Carlisle (2011), schools developed healthy relationships after receiving
proper training. The teachers, students, and staff, including the community, used a training model
fostering and encouraging healthier relationships. The fields of education and healthcare are

For example, students whose cultural norms do not allow public assertiveness are viewed as
inadequate nursing students. Students felt a conflict between pleasing their faculty and maintaining
their own cultural identity. Students who try to meet the expectations of the dominant culture further
conflict when they feel rejected by their families, who do not approve of the changes occurring in
them (Patterson et al., 2004). Diverse students may choose to change their cultural practices and
behaviors in order to be accepted; however, at times, this is not possible. As a result, these students
may be forced to remain as the outsiders, fearful of challenging the status quo and struggling
throughout the course of their education. It is imperative that nursing faculty return to the core values
of the profession and apply the fundamental principle of caring to all students, not just those who
reflect characteristics similar to their own. The profession of nursing cannot be viewed as one of
cultural competence until educators realize that their students deserve the same culturally sensitive
treatment as their patients (DeBrew, J. K., Lewallen, L. P., Chun, E., 2014). In addition to the ethnic
and cultural struggles students face, in a study by Zaman (2008), it looked at gender sensitivity
training and whether early childhood students get adequate training. When receiving gender sensitivity
training the students engaged in self reflection about their attitudes and expectations toward boys and
the effect those attitudes had on their teaching, resulting in less biased interactions. For instance, an
area of sensitivity training for mental health professionals can be sexual orientation preference. In an
intervention study conducted by Israel, Willging, and Ley (2016),

The Importance Of The Normandy Invasion
June 6, 1944. The world has been at war for almost 5 years. The Axis Powers have occupied France
and a lot of Europe. The USSR is pushing the Germans out of Russia and back towards Germany. The
Allies are preparing to invade and take back Europe and defeat the Axis. The invasion starts with a
mix of British and American paratroopers being dropped behind enemy lines to take important and
over 100,00 soldiers are preparing to launch one of the largest sea invasions of all time. The soldiers
are a mix of British, Canadian, and United States origin. The 5 beaches being attacked are codenamed
Utah, Gold, Sword, Juno, and Omaha. In the end, the invasion as a whole turned out to be a success on
every beach. There were many reasons for this success, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was a very long stretch of beach near the Cherbourg peninsula, bordered by Utah Beach and Gold
Beach. The 1st and 29th American infantry divisions landed here on June 6, 1944 at approximately
6.30 A.M. The landscape of the beach and surrounding area made it easy to defend, but very difficult
to attack. Facing the shore were large cliffs with multiple machine gun emplacements and bunkers
looking down towards it. Between the bunkers was barely any cover for the soldiers. This brings up
the question: Why did the Allies attack it? There are many reasons. First, the Allies needed a way to
link up Utah to Gold and the rest of the British sector. Utah was needed for the capture of Cherbourg,
and Gold was needed to put the Mulberry harbor in place. If these did not get linked to each other, the
soldiers on each front wouldn t be able to communicate effectively. Second, the Allied needed to make
sure the Germans couldn t regroup and counterattack. A counterattack at that stage would be terrible
for the Allies because they had not landed much supplies yet and had sustained a lot of casualties.
Taking Omaha would prevent this from happening. Finally, Omaha covered the most land. This was
essential for capturing the most possible towns, cities, and communication hubs. In spite of all the
difficulties, the Allies took the cliffs at around 10 A.M. Over the course of these 4 hours, the General
of the Army Omar

Firewall Attack Essay
In the world of computer and network security, there are myriad ways to launch an attack, which, from
the perspective of a network, can usually be defined as traffic that has vicious intent. There are infinite
computer attacks that no firewall can prevent, such as those executed locally on the machine by a
malicious user. From the network s perspective, there are numerous types of attack. Attacks can be
grouped into two types: brute force and precision. Juniper Firewall has the capability to protect against
both types of attack. Denial of Service (DoS) attacks are one of the most well known network security
threats under brute force attacks, which is largely due to the high profile way in which they can ...

House Essay
House, despite having a sexist main character and hardly and characters who are women, is my very
favorite television show. When I watch (which, by the way, is every week; religiously), I do so
because of the intensity and intrigue of the program. The various medical cases that the show involves
keep me on my toes and excited for what is about to happen next. It wasn t until this week, however,
that I noticed just how many inequalities and separations there are between men and women in the
show. First of all, the main character of House, Dr. Greg House, is a man. Whether or not the position
could be played as either a man or a woman, I do not know. However, I should say that Hugh Laurie,
the actor, does a truly remarkable job (he won a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He has absolutely no tact in dealing with her, and has mentioned on made many remarks about her

House s relationship with Cameron, however, would prove as an injustice. House is equally rude and
uncouth with his other two employees. One is black, and one is British. To say that House ignores
either of these factors would be completely incorrect. House refers to the black man as darky , asks
him about crime related incidents, all in an effort to spite him. This is the same way he speaks with
Cameron about her womanhood. Is he sexist? Is he racist? Maybe. Personally, I feel that he is not
meant to be portrayed as such. I think he is just an old, angry man. Tonight s episode did not
disappoint, and has actually proved quite pertinent to this assignment. It revolves around a sixteen
year old supermodel who has a panic attack on the runway, punches a fellow model, and then
collapses to the ground, unable to move, but still aware of what is around her. When she arrives at the
hospital, her father admits to giving her Valium prior to her performance in order to help with nerves.
Also, he later admits to having had sex with her a year or so again. House is not concerned with this
information, and decided to keep the father around to ask him more questions about the daughter.
Cameron, however, finds this information very troubling and reports him. At the very end of the

Boy is about an African child who has come to term with his blackness and with divine being that
created him God. The basis of the poem is built around the imagery of light and dark. In the first

The Social Sciences Of Modern Societies
Within the social sciences in contemporary times it is argued that corporatism has shrugged off its
previous association with authoritarian and fascists regimes, and is now deployed as a means for
analysing the role of organized interest in present day liberal democracies. Outhwaite argues that
corporatism has also passed into common political usage as shorthand for the involvement of trade
unions, together with organisations which represent the interests of capital in bargaining with
governments over economic policies. Debated publicly, corporatism is now seen as the antithesis of
neo liberalism, in which governments seek to use competition rather than negotiation as the dynamic
of policy making. Contrastingly, contemporary academic writers deem corporatism as the antithesis of
pluralism, Philippe Schmitter (1974), who is argued to have been the leading exponent of corporatist
theory in the 1970s portrayed corporatism as a critique of what he saw as the dominant pluralism
orthodoxy in Political Sociology. The extraordinary range and diversity of interest organisations in
modern societies were, according to the pluralist, evidence for the openness of democratic
governments to a wide range of influence, and offered a benign view of interest group politics as a
supplement to electoral mechanisms for ensuring democratic accountability. On the contrary,
corporatist theorist stressed the number of organisations which are politically influential, and the
tendency for such

Origin Of Baseball Essay
The Origin Of Baseball With upwards of ten million people participating in the sport of baseball in the
United States alone, it is apparent that baseball is one of the world s most popular sports. Throughout
the years, the sport of baseball has evolved from a humble game played on empty sandlots to America
s national pastime. The game has come a long way, but how did this game come to be? Everything has
its humble beginnings, and baseball is no different. Games that resemble baseball have been around
for centuries, and they have led to the development of baseball itself. The game of baseball originated
from a game called rounders. Rounders consisted of two teams, a striking team and a fielding team.
The striking team s goal was to hit the ball in order to score rounders, or runs, in modern baseball. The
rules were similar to the rules of baseball today. There were two teams consisting of nine players and
four bases. One difference between rounders and baseball is that there is no foul territory in rounders.
Any hit ball is in play and the player may run. In baseball, the ball must be hit in between the foul
lines painted on the third and first base lines (Olmos). Prior to the year 1845 rounders and cricket were
the only official games related to baseball that existed, until an individual named Alexander
Cartwright wrote the first official rules of baseball. He wrote these rules for a baseball club named the
Knickerbockers ( Origins Of Baseball ). This was the

My Neighborhood Exploration Is On The Island Of Manhattan...
My neighborhood exploration is on the island of Manhattan s Chinatown. Before I begin noting my
description of Chinatown, I must inform the reader of my existing attachments, sentiments, and
personal connection with the neighborhood. I have been visiting this particular neighborhood for a
rather large portion of my life. With my grandparents having lived in the Lower East Side for the
formative years of my childhood, visiting Chinatown is something my brothers and I grew up doing
for family outings and restaurant visits. For the past year, I have worked at the Museum of Chinese in
America located on 215 Centre Street and therefore have regular interaction with the people who live
and work in the neighborhood, as I am one of them. Although I live in the Bronx, like in most New
York City neighborhoods, there exist many dimensions and areas that have their own unique and
interesting histories that may be hidden to New York City residents and tourists alike. As for my
description and commentary on the materiality of the neighborhood I will focus on the main street that
runs through the heart of Chinatown, known as Canal Street, and specifically the streets of Bayard,
Centre, and Mott. Canal Street is one of the arteries of the heart of the City of New York. With the
Manhattan Bridge s entrance from Brooklyn directly leading onto Canal Street, the amount of traffic
that bustles by on a daily basis is crazy and there are always traffic cops on duty whistling away. The

  • 2. Common Core State Standards Essay Since 2010, there were 45 states that have adopted the same educational standards called Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The initiative is sponsored by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers and seeks to establish consistent education standards across the states. The Common Core Standards is initiative state led effort that established a single set of clear educational standards for kindergarten through 12th grade in English and Mathematical standards. These standards help to educate all of the students equally, they help children who move from state to state, as well as they help to prepare students for college and workplace. The common core standard helps to provide a clear understanding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Test scores are still dismissed, and state officials have expressed concern that the pace of improvement is not fast enough to show the benefits of the common core standards. Districts have also seen varying success in changing how teachers teach, something that was supposed to change under the new standards. Standards were released for Mathematics and English language arts on June 2, 2010, with a 45 states adopting the standards in the consequential months. There was an incentive for the states if they adopted the Common Core Standards. President Obama and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced the Race to the Top competitive grants on July 24, 2009 as a motivator for educational change. To be eligible, states had to adopt internationally benchmarked standards. Though states could adopt other standards like college and career ready standards, the Common Core standards automatically met the requirement. The governors and state schools chiefs funded development of the Common Core Standards. (Melinda Gates Foundation, Pearson Publishing Company, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation) Though the Common Core State Standards do not cover science and social studies content standards currently, the Next Generation Science Standards are in are the final stage of being developed. They are not directly related to the Common Core, but their content can be connected to the Mathematical and English Language Arts standards. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Unique Language of Jamaica Introduction It is often said that Jamaicans have a unique language. Some may say Jamaicans do not have a language of their own. Jamaicans official language however is Standard English. However there has been much confusion in the language we speak because we sometimes or often times speak in what is called Patois, Creole or even Ungrammatical English. This however is not considered a language. Patois is not a native language, it is a second language. Patois is a combination of English and African languages. Patois however reflects on the struggle and history of slavery and the ancestors. This language however has an effect on Jamaica since being Jamaicans are descendants of Africa. Despite the fact that patois is not Jamaicans native language it represents their culture and history. Patois have been used in Jamaicans day to day life to communicate. However this is mostly used in casual conversations. When having a formal conversation Standard English is used to communicate. There are three types of patois. These three types of patois are basolet, mesolet and acrolet. Basolet is the deep patois. This is where person speaks patois only. Acrolet is Standard Jamaican English. This is where the person speaks only Standard English. As it relates to Mesolet this is a combination of patois and Standard Jamaican English. Mesolet is however mostly used in present Jamaica. Patois is still been used now in Jamaica even though Standard English should be used because of how it was passed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Choice And The Notebook The purpose of this paper is to write about the similarities and difference of two movies: The Choice and The Notebook. Nicholas Sparks really knows how to set a romantic/emotional, but also creates a very predictable love story plot line. You could predict the ending before the movie started with only knowing who the movie was based on a Nicholas Sparks novel. There is always a boy who falls for a girl and has to work extremely hard to get her. Then, something happens, but in the end they are always together. The Notebook and The Choice both show how life is about choices, you have to fight for what you love, and the good guy wins; but, in The Choice the ending will leave you wanting to know more about these characters and their story and that is why The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the movie The Notebook first released in 2004 that features actor Ryan Gosling and actress Rachel McAdams; Internet Movie DataBase (IMDB) best describes the plot by saying, A poor yet passionate young man falls in love with a rich young woman, giving her a sense of freedom, but they are soon separated because of their social differences (IMBd). At the start of the movie, an elderly man begins to read a love story from his notebook to a female patient. The love story takes place in 1940. He tells the story how Allie and Noah fall in love over a summer. Then, her parents disapprove of her seeing Noah. The two get into an argument and then decide to break up. The next day Allie is forced to go without saying goodbye to him, she later starts school in New York. Although Noah seemed fine when he left that night, he was devastated and ends up writing Allie a letter each day for a year. She never received the letters because of her mother. Noah ends up going to battle in WWII and Allie becomes a nurse for wounded soldiers. She ends up meets a more wealthy young man who later she becomes engaged to. Later, Allie reads in a ... • 5. Seneca Creation Myths Humans have an innate need to understand how the world began and how they fit into the cosmic pattern. Creation myths provide many of these answers and serve to establish a foundation upon which a people can develop their world according to their expectations. For the Seneca, the genesis of their existence started on a utopian world in the sky. The sky world is part of the Seneca s unseen world. An argument could be made for its strong correlation to the concept of heaven found in many religions. The sky world, similar to the Christian Garden of Eden, contained a powerful tree of life which sustained a world teeming with life including beings. One day, the tree was uprooted and pushed through a hole in the sky in order to create a new world ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She was also pushed into the hole so that she could populate the watery world below. Even though she was transitioning between an unseen world and what would become the Earth, she, all the birds and animals that aided her upon her arrival and helped create the land, and her subsequent family members remained in the unseen world and became architects of the seen world. Eventually, the woman gave birth to a daughter who, as a grown woman, became pregnant with twin boys after entering the water. The boys were at odds even before their births and indeed the manner of their births would cement their destinies. The first twin arrived in the traditional manner, but his impatient brother tore his way out of his mother s side which resulted in her death. Her burial, though, was the fodder for nourishing plants for the soon to be created humans of the seen world. Appropriately, the first twin was named Good Spirit while his brother was called Bad Spirit. Good Spirit created humans and everything they would need to survive and live in comfort. Bad Spirit looked for ways to thwart his brother and to espcecially cause strife for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Australian Constitution The Australian Constitution was drafted at a series of constitutional conventions held in the 1890s. It was passed by the British Parliament as part of the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act 1900 and took effect on 1 January 1901. The Constitution is the legal framework for how Australia is governed and it can only be changed by referendum. A constitution is a set of rules by which a country or state is run. Some countries have unwritten constitutions which means there is no formal constitution written in one particular document. Their constitutional rules are derived from a number of sources. Britain sources its constitution from a number of important statutes, or laws, as well as principles decided in legal cases and conventions. New Zealand and Israel are two other countries that do not have formal written constitutions. Other countries have formal written constitutions in which the structure of government is defined and the respective powers of the nation and the states are written in one single document. These systems may also include unwritten conventions and constitutional law, which can inform how the constitution is interpreted. Australia, India and the United States are examples of countries with a written constitution. Some constitutions may be amended without any special procedure. The documents that make up the New Zealand Constitution may be amended simply by a majority vote of its Parliament. In other countries a special procedure must be followed ... • 7. Essay on Arctic and Alpine Soils Arctic and Alpine Soils Proposal (Ant)arctic (high latitude) and alpine (mountain) areas are affected by relatively similar climates, as latitude and altitude produce similar meteorologic effects. In these geographic regions where temperature is at such a pronounced extreme, climate would seem to be the leading factor of soil development. It is my goal in this research paper to answer the following question: How do the soils of arctic and alpine areas differ? This idea, taken largely from an abstract by Birkeland (1975), will be explored through the comparison of the soils of these two geographic regions, and an analysis of the soil development factors in those environments. Introduction Both high latitude and high altitude ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However inaccurate as Dokuchaev s generalization may be, a critique of his proposal provides an excellent tool to examine and compare the soils of similar Arctic and Alpine regions. Similarity in Arctic and Alpine Geographic Regions There are pedologic cases in which one of the five soil forming factors established by Jenny (192?) is so prominent and effectual that it outweighs the sum of all of the other factors, resulting in the definition of different soil series almost wholly upon differences in that dominant soil forming factor. For example, in the Carleton Arboretum, our Soils class found that the differences in soil series were defined mostly on the basis of parent material. Most groups had a direct correlation between the distribution of soil types and the distribution of parent materials. In the case of Arctic and Alpine* soils, it is climate which largely outweighs all of the other soil forming factors. As previously stated, the intense cold associated with high latitudes and high altitudes separates Arctic and Alpine areas from other geographic regions of Earth. I believe that upon this basis Dokuchaev made his analog between horizontal and vertical zonality of soils. Through an examination of a number of Arctic and Alpine soils and the pedogeneses of such soils, I aim to expand and adjust his hypothesis, as I feel he did not understand fully the complexity of Alpine ... • 8. Challenges Associated With Biodiversity Loss For 21st... DISCUSS THE CHALLENGES ASSOCIATED WITH BIODIVERSITY LOSS FOR 21ST CENTURY CONSERVATION BIOLOGISTS AND SOCIETY AS A WHOLE Although sustainable development has been at the forefront of international agenda for many years, we continue to focus on the growth of the economy without worrying about the impact on the environment. Currently, our ecological footprint (the area in hectares that we require to provide us with the ecological goods and services we use) is far exceeding our biocapacity (the actual land available to provide these services); with the human population requiring over 1.5 earths to sustain the amount of resources we use each year (WWF, 2014). As the growth of the human population shows no sign of slowing down, with predictions there will be a further 2.4 billion people on the planet by 2050 (WWF, 2014), the pressures we exert on the planet will only increase. This overuse of resources is not only making it difficult to support our needs, but is also leaving little space and resources left for all the other species around the globe to thrive, and more importantly, survive. This has led to a decline in biodiversity at a much faster than would be seen under natural circumstances. According to the Living Planet Index (LPI); which measures the trends in 10,380 populations of 3,038 species of fish, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds; biodiversity has been decreasing rapidly, with records showing a 52% reduction in the size of these populations from 1970 2010 ... • 9. Insanity In The Tell Tale Heart Edgar Allan Poe uses symbolism, conflict, and setting to construct the effect of insanity in the narrator of The Tell Tale Heart. To begin with, Poe uses imagery to help demonstrate symbolism; as he states, The disease had sharpened my senses not destroyed not dulled them, it tells the reader that most of the information was transmitted by his senses. For instance, on page 92 the narrator describes how the old man s eye resembled of a vulture through sight and this creates a situation where the reader shifts into the narrator s shoes. Through the mind of the narrator shows how the eye triggers a negative feeling and it might be the fear of death as vulture s prey on the sick and dead. • 10. Wind, Earthquake And Its Effect On The Earthquake Essay Unlike wind, earthquake is a different phenomenon which generates a ground motion. The intensity or acceleration of the earthquake depends upon the magnitude and location of its epicenter. The seismic waves caused by the earthquake cause inertial forces in the building. The inertial forces are created when an outside force tries to move a body in rest which happens in this case as seismic waves tries the move the building in rest. We all know that when a building is subjected to inertial forces it should obey the newton s second law of motion. F=M.a (3) Where F is inertial force and M denotes mass of building and a is the acceleration with which the building is moved due to seismic activity. Duration, velocity and displacement: From the newton s second law, it is evident that acceleration is a key factor in determining the forces on a building. But there is one more criteria that we have to look into is the duration of the earthquake. Earthquake that has moderate acceleration, sustained over time, can cause much more damage to buildings than a single much larger peak. It weakens the building structure and reduces its durability. The strong motion duration is often termed as bracketed duration (Arnold 2013). This is the shaking duration above a certain threshold acceleration value, which is 0.05g, and is defined as the time between the first and last peaks of motion that exceeds this threshold value (Arnold 2013). The strong motion ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However the method of using a strip search has become outdated and unnecessary in modern society. It is time for the practice of strip searching people to be stopped by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), even if it is a justified search. The people of Canada should be protected from these searches as they have the right to privacy and protection from invasive search practices. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms even has a section on protecting against unreasonable searches , found in section 7 of the charter. If that is the case, why should the OPP be allowed to infringe on our rights through strip searches? The fact that in a modern society an illegal method of searching civilians is still being used is ridiculous. We have the technology to find and use less invasive methods of searching people that also abide by the law. The strip search, being such an invasive form of searching someone is humiliating and subjecting people to it should be stopped. There was a ruling in 2001 by the Supreme Court of Canada, which said that it was humiliating. The exact quote was Strip searching is inherently humiliating and degrading, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in a landmark case 15 years ago, and should only be done when there are reasonable grounds (Jacques). • 12. Stereotypes Of International School Students With a growing demand for international schools worldwide, is there really that much of a difference in the character outcomes of students studying there? Many perceive international school students to be bratty, rebellious students. This stereotype, however, is clearly false. International school students are simply foreign or local students sent to international schools to receive education for various reasons. There is no solid evidence that all of them are spoilt brats. It is inevitable that there are students with poor attitudes, but this is represented by the minority. Thus, the title should not be given to the whole cohort. Firstly, it is true and inevitable that there exist students who display poor attitudes. These cases are present in every school. I have seen cases of my seniors transferring to international schools because they could not cope with the pace of learning despite having already dropped from the IP stream to the O level stream in local schools. Immanuel Kant Vs Foucault This piece will begin with the immortal words of Immanuel Kant: Reason does not work instinctively, but requires trial, practice, and instruction in order to gradually progress from one level of insight to another . The definition of reason according to Immanuel Kant is that it is a wave, a never ending influence that is continually constructing and improving previous perceptions on knowledge. When referring to the Enlightenment in the following piece, the time period that involved a massive intellectual and rational movement that took Europe by storm in the 18th century is to be considered. The influence of the Enlightenment thinking is shown by Foucault to have travelled much further than its time period; influencing recent thought processes such as the modernist movement. Therefore, it can be said that the Enlightenment can be considered the age of reason because, for the first time, numerous individuals were able to reason for themselves by the loosening of the grip of minority and as a result, the root of many modern concepts and ideas as well as modes of thinking are found in this precise point of ... • 14. Teamwork Reflection For our teamwork presentation this week, diving into the concept of teamwork and how to build and collaborate as an efficient team, we found a different sense of unity and collaboration that we were unaware of before the preparation for our presentation. For our team s main topics, we covered the differences between a team and a group, and the vague similarities between the two. From the textbook comparisons, we consider ourselves a team rather than a group of people because of our common goals before our presentation date. We were all working together to collaborate and got our ideas across to the class to present a topic that is both interesting and informative to our fellow classmates. A team is described as a group of people that all work towards a common goal and have objectives to work towards together, rather than individuals coming together to perform and complete their individual goals. The roles that the members of our team performed were a complete collaboration of ideas and thoughts. We spoke together and did not believe that there was any set person that performed more or less than others within the group. We each put our thoughts together and created a lesson plan for the class and broke into where we felt each of our strengths were for the lesson plan of our presentation. Jordan introduced the chapter and how it was relevant to the class, as well as concluded the presentation. Alexa brought her teaching skills to light by explaining the activity through our lesson plan and assigned groups to go to their allotted location around the room. Following that, Nhi, Meredith and Indrit provided examples of their knowledge for our fellow peers and giving them a better understanding of the curriculum in the textbook and how we chose to relate it to our activity in the classroom. All in all, we performed as a team and built our lesson plan based on our strengths and weaknesses as a collaborating machine in our communication class. The norms that were established even before our group began, was to ensure that we were all timely about communicating with one another and to make ourselves available to give us enough time to complete the presentation in a timely manner. Family stress and transitions are extremely impactful to an individual s growth and well being, with disruptions in the life cycle creating dysfunction (Carter McGoldrick, 1988). I communicate primarily with teenagers, those in the adolescent stage, who at this point desire more independence and less family involvement in their day to day lives. During this stage, the parent child relationship is truly tested because the parent still wants to assert their dominance and authority while the child wants to have the freedom to explore the world around them and try new things so that they are able to uncover who they really are as individuals. This tug of war creates conflict and tension which affects the family as a whole as well as the adolescent child. Texters often discuss experiencing horizontal or predictable and unpredictable real life events that exert stress on every person involved. Examples of horizontal stressors include the decision of their parents to divorce, having to move away from their friends and start over in a new place, or the loss of a parent s job and the impact of the financial strain associated with it (Carter McGoldrick, 1988). Many of the individuals who text in eventually share that their parents are directly affected by the stressor and aren t handling it well, possibly due to behaviors passed on to them by their parents, lack of support, or lack of coping skills and will take that stress out on their child or children. The hope is that this volunteer work will give students a better sense of civic duty, and thus, be a worthy addition to college curriculums. However, this idea relies on the faulty premise that if one is forced to volunteer that one will derive the same benefits as someone who does it out of their own desire to help. If a company is forced to give its time and resources to volunteer, it might as well give money instead. That money, in the form of taxes, is already paid by both companies and individuals to the government. That money, in turn, should be used to help communities when needed. If communities need extra help, the answer is increasing taxes to provide that extra help. Forcing college students to provide that help directly ignores the efficiencies gained from specialization. A college student, who isn t even studying whatever field is needed, would be able to help more by working in their actual field for money, and then giving that money to a specialist, via the government, to provide the direct help. The only problem with that arrangement is that it doesn t provide the positive feelings that directly helping would. However, gaining a positive sense of accomplishment at the expense of providing less efficient help is a purely selfish motivation. In the case of labor being needed that almost anyone could do, there is an even greater gain in having the public at large finance the work instead of doing it directly. A theory of international relations is a collection of concepts that delineate how the international system operates (SparkNote on International Politics, 2010). Contrary to an ideology, a theory of international studies is endorsed with solid evidence. This essay will focus on two dominant theories of International Relations (IR), namely realism and liberalism to decide for this matter on the more pragmatic one for the study of IR. According to realism, states work only to gain more power relative to that of other states (Donelan: 1990:23). Liberalism matured in the 1970s as some scholars generated arguments that realism was defunct. Anthropogenic Noise Pollution And Its Effects On Cetaceans Anthropogenic Noise Pollution and Its Effects on Cetaceans Cetaceans use sound extensively in both communication, hunting, and navigation. However as humanity continues to make use of the ocean we are constantly filling it with equipment that produces high amounts of sound. These devices are starting to have an impact on cetaceans worldwide, from mass strandings often linked to military exercises to area denials caused by busy commercial shipping lanes and seismic surveys. If consideration is not taken towards this problem now it could develop into something that could have degrading effects on cetacean populations in the future. Sound waves are nothing more than an energy transfer through a medium be it through a liquid, solid, or a gas. Sound pressure or intensity is measured on logarithmic scale in decibels dB which increases on an order of magnitude. For instance a quiet conversation would be around 30 dB and whereas the human pain threshold would be just over 100 dB. While the pitch or frequency of the sound is measured in hertz or Hz, the higher the hertz the higher the pitch of the sound and vice versa (Hildebrand, 2004). Anthropologic noise pollution can come from many different sources, some of the more common ones are commercial shipping, acoustic deterrent devices, military sonar, and explosives (used in some seismic surveys for oil and gas as well as military exercises). Two Point Threshold Lab Report In this experiment, the two point threshold, or smallest separation of two points of stimulation on the skin that are perceived as two separate impressions of touch, was measured using the method of limits. The purpose of this experiment was to determine the participant s two point threshold on their finger, forearm, palm, and back. The identification of the stimulus is due to a variety of somatosensation mechanoreceptors, meaning they sense touch in response to a mechanical stimulation or pressure, which are located all over the body. When pressure is placed upon the epidermis (outermost layer of skin), different receptors respond to that pressure which is felt through vibrations. The ascending trials for each body part, with the exception of the second trial of the forearm, did not vary far from the mean threshold. When the second trial of forearm stimulation was given to the participant, there was a point in time (near the middle of administration) in which the experimenter accidentally placed the dial caliber tips onto the participant s skin at two separate times. This caused the participant to report feeling the stimulus as separate earlier than she did in the first and third forearm trials. Because of this error, the mean two point threshold of the forearm was not as reliable as it could have been had there been no error in the deliverance of stimuli. The purpose of this lab was, in fact, achieved and the participant s two point threshold means were calculated. The errors of this experiment could have been avoided by utilizing computer/mechanical stimulation as opposed to a dial caliper. Using a machine to administer the touch would ensure that the pressures as well as the timing and placement of each tip on the caliber were exactly the same. It is also important to note that the temperature of the dial caliber could have had an effect of the collection of data. At various points throughout the experiment, the participant jumped at the chilling temperature of the metal caliber. With each startle of the participant, the experimenter had to remove and then re place the stimulus onto the participant s skin to attempt an accurate reading. In future experiments, it is important to standardize the pressure and placement of the stimuli to record a more accurate data set. It may also be helpful to eliminate the variable of temperature of the caliber to the best of one s ability. Through her research Valentine came across parents concern about child abduction as, 63% of parents believed it was strangers that would carry out child abduction. Due to this belief, parents were less likely to allow their child the privileged to play outdoors as they feared their child would be abducted, which may have resulted in the decline in outdoor play over the years. However, Gill (2007) argues that a child is more likely to be harmed by a trusted adult in private rather than a stranger in their community. To add to this, it can be an advantage for children to play away from adult supervision, for example playing outdoors without the adult over the child s shoulders constantly disrupting their play. Through this, a child can obtain independent mobility, in which they can explore the environment on their terms and create own identities (Armitage, 2004). Diverse students may choose to change their cultural practices and behaviors in order to be accepted; however, at times, this is not possible. As a result, these students may be forced to remain as the outsiders, fearful of challenging the status quo and struggling throughout the course of their education. This brings up the question: Why did the Allies attack it? There are many reasons. First, the Allies needed a way to link up Utah to Gold and the rest of the British sector. Utah was needed for the capture of Cherbourg, and Gold was needed to put the Mulberry harbor in place. If these did not get linked to each other, the soldiers on each front wouldn t be able to communicate effectively. Second, the Allied needed to make sure the Germans couldn t regroup and counterattack. A counterattack at that stage would be terrible for the Allies because they had not landed much supplies yet and had sustained a lot of casualties. Taking Omaha would prevent this from happening. Finally, Omaha covered the most land. This was essential for capturing the most possible towns, cities, and communication hubs. In spite of all the difficulties, the Allies took the cliffs at around 10 A.M. Over the course of these 4 hours, the General of the Army Omar ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Lutheranism And Anglicism Similarities The branch of Christian that is Lutheranism was created and is very different from Anglicism. There have to be many differences in the first place, because they were created in vastly different places, and those places are very far apart. Like the Renaissance in Italy and the northern Renaissance, they were different but still the same basic ideas of the Renaissance. The different ideas of the Protestants were not only between Germany and England it was also between Switzerland and England. For one the Church of England was started differently from the two other religions. The Church of England was started for selfish and political reasons. • 31. Firewall Attack Essay In the world of computer and network security, there are myriad ways to launch an attack, which, from the perspective of a network, can usually be defined as traffic that has vicious intent. There are infinite computer attacks that no firewall can prevent, such as those executed locally on the machine by a malicious user. From the network s perspective, there are numerous types of attack. Attacks can be grouped into two types: brute force and precision. Juniper Firewall has the capability to protect against both types of attack. Denial of Service (DoS) attacks are one of the most well known network security threats under brute force attacks, which is largely due to the high profile way in which they can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We can use flows or sessions as a way to determine whether traffic attempting to traverse the firewall is legitimate. We control the state checking components resident in Juniper Firewall by configuring flow settings. These settings allow you to configure state checking for various conditions on the device. You can use flow settings to protect against TCP hijacking, and to generally ensure that the fire wall is performing full state processing when desired. We take a case study of attack on a network and perform study of the detection of the malicious packets on a Netscreen Firewall. A new solution for securing enterprise networks will be developed here. 1. INTRODUCTION A number of malicious attacks which causes disruption to the processes has been increased due to an increase in the tremendous expansion in the field of computer networks. The main aim of network administrators is to provide continuous services to which they are intended to. Currently, the main aim of researchers is to provide secure network whereas, little intervention has been given to the quantification of network security which includes assessing of the vulnerability and malicious attacks to these systems. One of the huge networks which has more possibility to malware is an Enterprise Network which is a large and diverse network that connects both major and minor sites within an enterprise.Thesecurity and trustworthiness of Enterprise Networks have been a major concern in ... • 32. House Essay House, despite having a sexist main character and hardly and characters who are women, is my very favorite television show. When I watch (which, by the way, is every week; religiously), I do so because of the intensity and intrigue of the program. The various medical cases that the show involves keep me on my toes and excited for what is about to happen next. It wasn t until this week, however, that I noticed just how many inequalities and separations there are between men and women in the show. First of all, the main character of House, Dr. Greg House, is a man. Whether or not the position could be played as either a man or a woman, I do not know. However, I should say that Hugh Laurie, the actor, does a truly remarkable job (he won a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He has absolutely no tact in dealing with her, and has mentioned on made many remarks about her gender. Later, I will discuss how this is evident even in this one particular episode. To only look at House s relationship with Cameron, however, would prove as an injustice. House is equally rude and uncouth with his other two employees. One is black, and one is British. To say that House ignores either of these factors would be completely incorrect. House refers to the black man as darky , asks him about crime related incidents, all in an effort to spite him. This is the same way he speaks with Cameron about her womanhood. Is he sexist? Is he racist? Maybe. Personally, I feel that he is not meant to be portrayed as such. I think he is just an old, angry man. Tonight s episode did not disappoint, and has actually proved quite pertinent to this assignment. It revolves around a sixteen year old supermodel who has a panic attack on the runway, punches a fellow model, and then collapses to the ground, unable to move, but still aware of what is around her. When she arrives at the hospital, her father admits to giving her Valium prior to her performance in order to help with nerves. Also, he later admits to having had sex with her a year or so again. House is not concerned with this information, and decided to keep the father around to ask him more questions about the daughter. Cameron, however, finds this information very troubling and reports him. At the very end of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Comparing The Little Black Boy And Olaudah Equiano In William Blake s The Little Black Boy and Olaudah Equiano s The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano presents the ideals that contributed to abolitionist cause during the 18th and 19th century in England. Both literary works present notions that deal with identity of man as well as further examination on Christianity which was deemed as an hypocrisy of slavery. The Little Black Boy is about an African child who has come to term with his blackness and with divine being that created him God. The basis of the poem is built around the imagery of light and dark. In the first stanza the boy cries: I am black but O! my soul is white and I am black as if bereav d of light. The black boy feels that his blackeness is a burden ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. The Social Sciences Of Modern Societies Within the social sciences in contemporary times it is argued that corporatism has shrugged off its previous association with authoritarian and fascists regimes, and is now deployed as a means for analysing the role of organized interest in present day liberal democracies. Outhwaite argues that corporatism has also passed into common political usage as shorthand for the involvement of trade unions, together with organisations which represent the interests of capital in bargaining with governments over economic policies. Debated publicly, corporatism is now seen as the antithesis of neo liberalism, in which governments seek to use competition rather than negotiation as the dynamic of policy making. Contrastingly, contemporary academic writers deem corporatism as the antithesis of pluralism, Philippe Schmitter (1974), who is argued to have been the leading exponent of corporatist theory in the 1970s portrayed corporatism as a critique of what he saw as the dominant pluralism orthodoxy in Political Sociology. The extraordinary range and diversity of interest organisations in modern societies were, according to the pluralist, evidence for the openness of democratic governments to a wide range of influence, and offered a benign view of interest group politics as a supplement to electoral mechanisms for ensuring democratic accountability. On the contrary, corporatist theorist stressed the number of organisations which are politically influential, and the tendency for such ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Origin Of Baseball Essay The Origin Of Baseball With upwards of ten million people participating in the sport of baseball in the United States alone, it is apparent that baseball is one of the world s most popular sports. Throughout the years, the sport of baseball has evolved from a humble game played on empty sandlots to America s national pastime. The game has come a long way, but how did this game come to be? Everything has its humble beginnings, and baseball is no different. Games that resemble baseball have been around for centuries, and they have led to the development of baseball itself. The game of baseball originated from a game called rounders. Rounders consisted of two teams, a striking team and a fielding team. The striking team s goal was to hit the ball in order to score rounders, or runs, in modern baseball. The rules were similar to the rules of baseball today. There were two teams consisting of nine players and four bases. One difference between rounders and baseball is that there is no foul territory in rounders. Any hit ball is in play and the player may run. In baseball, the ball must be hit in between the foul lines painted on the third and first base lines (Olmos). Prior to the year 1845 rounders and cricket were the only official games related to baseball that existed, until an individual named Alexander Cartwright wrote the first official rules of baseball. He wrote these rules for a baseball club named the Knickerbockers ( Origins Of Baseball ). This was the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. My Neighborhood Exploration Is On The Island Of Manhattan... My neighborhood exploration is on the island of Manhattan s Chinatown. Before I begin noting my description of Chinatown, I must inform the reader of my existing attachments, sentiments, and personal connection with the neighborhood. I have been visiting this particular neighborhood for a rather large portion of my life. With my grandparents having lived in the Lower East Side for the formative years of my childhood, visiting Chinatown is something my brothers and I grew up doing for family outings and restaurant visits. For the past year, I have worked at the Museum of Chinese in America located on 215 Centre Street and therefore have regular interaction with the people who live and work in the neighborhood, as I am one of them. Although I live in the Bronx, like in most New York City neighborhoods, there exist many dimensions and areas that have their own unique and interesting histories that may be hidden to New York City residents and tourists alike. As for my description and commentary on the materiality of the neighborhood I will focus on the main street that runs through the heart of Chinatown, known as Canal Street, and specifically the streets of Bayard, Centre, and Mott. Canal Street is one of the arteries of the heart of the City of New York. With the Manhattan Bridge s entrance from Brooklyn directly leading onto Canal Street, the amount of traffic that bustles by on a daily basis is crazy and there are always traffic cops on duty whistling away. The stores ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
