Case 27 Southwest Airlines
1.0 Summary of Southwest Airlines: Does LUV Last?* First time in history, Southwest Airlines had
its LUV for customers questioned. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) levied a record $10.2
million fine on Southwest Airlines. They accuse them after missing mandatory safety checks of flying
117 planes on nearly 60,000 flights between June 18, 2006, and March 14, 2007. Both the FAA and
Southwest testified. FAA officials were blamed for being too close to the airline and being careless in
their regulatory duties. Safety was not compromised by the missed inspections; a tiny section of the
plane s skin had missed being inspected. The cracks in that section would not have led to any terrible
accident. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unions were becoming more aggressive in communicating their frustration, in contrast to earlier days
when differences of opinion were resolved more politely and peacefully. On 2001, ramp workers
picketed near company headquarters with signs that read Record Profits Empty Pickets . They
complained that staff shortages, combined with Southwest s record passenger loads and its drive to
improve on time performance, meant that they had to lift more bags and had to do so more quickly,
which put them at risk of injury. Though on July 2002, first time in the company history, Southwest s
mechanics union asked federal mediators to intervene to break a contract deadlock over pay. While the
company was nowhere near a strike, the incident clearly signaled the strains appearing in employee
relations. The company was also engaged without much success in a contract renegotiation with flight
attendants. July 2003, a group of flight attendants staged a demonstration at the headquarters, carrying
signs stating Spread the LUV and handing out cards to travelers that read Give our flight attendants a
break . The move was an expression of frustration over management s idea of increasing the flight
attendants work hours. Workers who had been working hard to boost the productivity of the company
were not seeing much return from profit sharing and a stock value that was

Best Memories Research Paper
When most people think of a school they think of hard work yelling teens and just absolute chaos, but
they also my think back to when they themselves were in school or even their first year there as
freshmen and then think of all of the good and funny memories they had there in that year. I happen to
be one of them just thinking back to the beginning of the year and all the memories I have had so far.
Heck, some of my best memories are in school like when my balloon popped in class, and when me
and my friends messed with the plants we were supposed to grow and even when me and my friends
played a few games of UNO in the middle of class. First off, one way I had a great time in class is
when my balloon popped in the middle of biology. One reason ... Show more content on

One reason why this is one of my best memories is that we were super loud. This makes it the best
because we were super loud and our substitute teacher didn t even care, other than when he asked us if
we were done with are working Are you guys done with your work over there and if not you ll have to
talk to your teacher but we were already done so we were good. Another reason why this is one of my
best memories is none of us were winning. This makes it the best because we are all competitive and
none of us were winning, Which is kind of funny because all of us were smack talking each other
about who is going to win. Yet I ended up winning and won the next few games of UNO but they were
all pretty lengthy and took us most of the hour to play. This makes playing UNO in the middle of class
one of the best memories because our teacher didn t even care that much and that none of us were
winning even though we were all competitive. Some of my best memories that i have had in my
freshman year are when my balloon popped in the middle of class ,and when we messed with my
friends plant ,and finally when me and my friends played UNO in the middle of class. These were
some of my best memories because when my balloon popped everyone jumped out of their seats and
me and my friends couldn t help but laugh, and when we messed with my friends plant and we put a

Internal Rate of Return
Internal Rate of Return Meaning of Capital Budgeting ο‚— Capital budgeting can be defined as the
process of analyzing, evaluating, and deciding whether resources should be allocated to a project or
not. ο‚— Capital budgeting addresses the issue of strategic long term investment decisions. ο‚— Process of
capital budgeting ensure optimal allocation of resources and helps management work towards the goal
of shareholder wealth maximization. Why Capital Budgeting is so Important? ο‚— Involve massive

In cases where one project has a higher initial investment than a second mutually exclusive project,
the first project may have a lower IRR (expected return), but a higher NPV (increase in shareholders
wealth) and should thus be accepted over the second project. A method called marginal IRR can be
used to adapt the IRR methodology to this case. ο‚— Another problem with the IRR method is that it
may give different rates of return. Suppose there are two discount rates (two IRRs) that make the
present value equal to the initial investment. In this case, which rate should be used for comparison
with the cutoff rate? The purpose of this question is not to resolve the cases where there are different
IRRs. ο‚— Under IRR it is assumed that all the intermediate cash flows are reinvested at the IRR which
always not hold true. Which approach is better ο‚— Both NPV and IRR methods yield better decision
making data based off them being sophisticated capital budgeting techniques and consider time value
of money and life time of the project. ο‚— NPV and IRR methods yield better decision making data
based off them being sophisticated capital budgeting techniques as NPV implicitly assumes that any
intermediate cash inflows generated by an investment are reinvested at the firm s cost of capital. ο‚—

Impact Of Political And Economic Changes On American...
During the era of 1810 to 1850, many changes took place that shaped our government today. Some
political changes that took place include: the expanding of democracy, voting privileges, eligibility to
hold office requirements, a new constitution, method of choosing presidential electors, the rapid
growth of the electorate, political parties, nullification, the removal of governmental deposits, etc. An
economic change that shaped US government was mainly the industrial revolution. Cultural changes
can be seen in accordance with the political and economic changes, this is because the people had to
adapt to the new changes and it shaped their culture. Their cultural changes were mainly driven by
their wanted virtues of an artistic lifestyle (Brinkley, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The industrial revolution came about because of many variables: progresses in transportation and
communications, the development of manufacturing innovation, the advancement of new frameworks
of business association, and maybe most importantly, increases in population development. As far as
population trends, America became more populous as the years went by. The population was about 4
million in 1790. By 1820, it had reached 10 million and 17 million by 1840. New developments in
public health played an important role in the population growth. (Brinkley, 222) Railroads were a very
efficient way of transportation. They got people and supplies to places faster than in previous times.
The telegraph improved communication. Before the telegraph, communication over long distances
could only happen in person. Without the railroads, the telegraph would not work because the wires of
the telegraph ran along the railroad tracks and the telegraph offices were usually located in the railroad
stations. (Brinkley,

Life Of Pi Reflection
Imagine having to survive 227 days aboard a small, unsteady lifeboat with a 450 pound Bengal Tiger.
It seems unrealistic, right? In the Novel Life of Pi, an Indian boy named Pi shipwrecks into the Pacific
Ocean and finds himself aboard a lifeboat with a predatory animal. To Pi, surviving this journey with a
tiger seems impossible at first, but over time, his view of the tiger is drastically changed. Richard
Parker, the tiger, serves as three things over the course of the journey: a teacher, an antagonist, and a
companion.
Despite being an animal, Richard Parker serves as a teacher for Pi on their journey across the Pacific
Ocean. When Pi is a child, his father finds it necessary to teach him a scarring lesson about the
savageness of predatory animals. He places a goat in the cage of a hungry tiger and makes sure Pi and
his brother, Ravi, see how fast the goat is devoured. The purpose of his lesson was to teach the boys
that, Every animal is ferocious and dangerous (Martel 38). On the journey with Richard Parker, Pi
remembers the lesson his father had taught him as a child and becomes aware that the tiger is to be
respected. When aboard the lifeboat, Pi attempts to train Richard Parker to abide on one side of the
boat so that Pi may remain aboard the boat also. While attempting to train the tiger, Pi recollects from
his father s lesson and from his experience of owning a zoo that, The animal in front of you must
know where it stands, whether above you or below you (43). When Pi succeeds in training the tiger,
the confidence he needed to survive is boosted. The principle lesson Richard Parker teaches Pi is that
he is to be respected and left alone.
Once aboard the lifeboat, Richard Parker is seen as threat, or rather an antagonist, to Pi. An antagonist
in a story is defined as someone or something that provides an obstacle for the protagonist. Before Pi
realizes that he needs to remain situated on the lifeboat, his fear of Richard Parker compels him to stay
as far away as possible from the lifeboat. When Richard Parker is swimming towards the lifeboat, Pi
yells to him, Leave me alone. Get lost. Drown! Drown (99). As the tiger mounts the boat, Pi s first
instinct is to jump off the boat into the roaring

Essay on further aspects of contract and tort
TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION This assignment will strive to outline points of law
including identifying key vitiating factors, including duress and undue influence and illegality as well
as forms of discharge of a contract and remedies for that. It will also apply these laws to the cases
provided to illustrate the application of these laws. Vitiating factors represent some sort of defect in
the formation of the contract. Examples of this are that the contract is based on a mistake or a
misrepresentation. Illegality on the other hand, is much more to do with the actual character of the
agreement itself. It is of a type that the law frowns upon for some reason, for public policy or for other
reasons it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The defendant won at first instance on the basis that the contract was illegal and unenforceable
because of public policy. The claimants appealed successfully. The court of appeal held that it would
be undesirable in such a case, involving an area regarded as the province of the criminal law, for
individual judges exercising a civil jurisdiction to impose their own moral attitudes . In light of this
case, I think Adam would have a very strong and pretty straight forward case if he did not know she
was a prostitute, however the courts are unlikely to prevent the enforcement of a contract where
behaviour concerns to or involves a criminal offence going by the Court of Appeal judgement in
Armhouse lee Ltd v Chappel. CASE: MARIA V MR MOHAMMED Transactions, either under
contract or as gifts, may be avoided where they have been entered into as a consequence of the undue
influence of the person benefiting from them. The effect of undue influence is to make a contract
voidable, but delay may bar the right to avoid the agreement. There are two possible situations relating
to undue influence, where there is a special relationship and where one does not exist. Where there is a
special relationship between the parties, there is a presumption that the transaction is the consequence
of undue influence. The burden if proof is on the person receiving the benefit to rebut the
presumption. Examples of special relationships are: Parent and child, while the latter is

The Violin Research Paper
The Violin is a stringed instrument that is part of the String Family. The Violin produces a range of
harmonics that captivate the audience. Unlike instruments in the Brass, Woodwind, and Percussion
family, The Violin is played with a bow, which causes the string to vibrate at certain frequencies that
travel through the bridge and body of the instrument resulting in a disturbance of air molecules. This
disturbance is the sound that we hear. What makes the Violin so attractive to listeners is the intense yet

Crime Is An Issue Of Crime
Crime is an issue that must be controlled effectively with planning and in a timely manner for goals to
be accomplished. There are many plans, procedures, or policies that control crime, but law
enforcement must understand that it may never end. Addressing crime in a timely manner can alter the
aftermath for future occurrences. According to Briggs (2008) the key mystery for these outrageous
crimes in Memphis that occurs frequently are linked to the way people live and the misguided housing
policy that are implemented in the city (Briggs, 2008). There many low income families who live in
neighborhoods outside the traditional ghetto which is increasing the poverty areas that is responsible
for the uptick in crime in Memphis (Briggs, 2008). Memphis has faced many crime problems over the
last three years such as homicides, assaults, and burglars, these issues have escalated out of control for
law enforcement officials to manage. The homicides, assaults, and burglaries along with other violent
crimes in the neighborhood creates instability in Memphis leaves the rate of crime to increase more
frequently. Memphis is crowded with displaced families, gang members and violence that has taken
over the streets. These crimes have asserted a long history of violence since the early 1990 s of levels
of crimes within the city. In the 1990 s at least 17 percent of the poor in the nation s 100 largest

Themes Explored in Purple Hibiscus
1) Five major issues explored in purple hibiscus are; domestic violence, oppression, religion,
education and love.
2a) Adichie uses a narrative point of view to explore the theme of domestic violence. The book is
narrated in the first person by a 15 year old who is directly affected by domestic violence. Because of
her young age she is quiet honest and this allows her to paint a great picture to the audience of the
brutal abuse that Eugene bestows upon his family. This is as a result of her sensitive, intelligent and
observant nature.
2b) Oppression is explored through narrative point of view. Adichie uses the point of view of Kambili

Kambili sees the sips of scorching tea from her father as a representation of his love, this love is very
painful. Amadi s love on the other hand is not the painful kind of love but instead a joyous one.
4a) Adichie uses setting to explore domestic violence. Domestic violence is present in the Achike
household. This setting is the only setting in the entire book where domestic violence is present.
Adichie uses a variety of things and rooms within this setting to bring out domestic violence some
examples are the figurines, Eugene and Beatrice s room and the bathroom.
4b) the entire setting of Nigeria brings out the theme of oppression especially political oppression. All
of Nigeria is suffering as a result of the political oppression, including Abba Town, Enugu and Ifeoma
s village. The road setting also shows political oppression, especially when persons are stopped and
searched by the military for no good reason.
4c) Religion is explored through setting, Adichie uses Aunty Ifeoma s home to teach Kambili things
about religion different that she had been taught be her father. It was in Aunty Ifeoma s house that
Kambili understood her grandfather s traditionalist religion and was able to make a link between
Catholicism and Traditionalist.
4d) A setting used to explore education is Aunty Ifeoma s home. Aunty Ifeoma in her home speaks of
the many young girls in the school who get married then allow their husbands to own them and their

Ralph s Characters
Atavism, the retrogradation of philosophy and evolutionary traits, is consequently the result of
prolonged exposure to primal environments. However, the consequences can lead to wrongful ethical
and moral actions. Considering the allegorical tale, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, one must
consider the island being a representation of the human mind itself. The only structure and object that
a human can retain whilst dismissing all else is the presence of their own thoughts, their own reality.
Shaped by external stimuli, all humans have the innate traits demonstrated in novel s characters. From

Home schooling is continuing to grow rapidly in many places. He explains that home schooling serves
children equally well as public schools. Romanowski supports the main idea by giving claims that
home schooling helps a child improve their social skills, children who are homeschooled are more
likely to become academically successful, a student is not put on time limit and they are not told to put
everything up and focus on a new topic. Home schooling allows children to learn to socialize with

cumulated with an inundating urge to use the substance. It can also pertain to several individual,
family, genetic, and social issues rather than by any one reason. Prescription drugs written by doctors
for their patients are the only ones who are safe to take those prescriptions, that means that no one else
is allowed to consume them. A drug that is safe for one person can be seriously hazardous and
possibly fatal for anyone else. Most teens probably feel they are forced to try these drugs through peer
pressure.
The most immense reason teens start utilizing these drugs is because their friends were pressured
through peer pressure. No one desires to be left out, and teens (and some adults, too) find themselves
trying things they normally wouldn t try, just to fit in with the crowd. In these cases, you either look
for better friends that won t pressure you to do irrational things, or find a reasonable way to say no.
Teens should plan an exit strategy or plan ahead of time, to resist from giving into temptation. These
teens become victims to peer pressure due to the fear of being insulted by making them feel deprived
for not doing something, that they eventually do it. Pressuring them by telling them why they should
do it and the fear of rejection by

Commonplace Book Report
What I have noticed through most of the entries in my commonplace book (especially the two stated
above) is that I mostly write down something when it induces a negative emotion from me the quotes
that rile me up and make me upset. And usually these are the quotes that remind me of the hardships
faced by women. As a woman, sexism is a prevalent issue in my life, so when I fight against it, I am
fighting for myself. When I came across the first quote, my mind instantaneously conjured up an
image of a mentally exhausted person who was beyond any point of functionality. Unsurprisingly, the
person I visualized was a woman. I ve noticed this pattern of associating pain and struggle with
women is a recurring theme in my life (and is also outlined in the second quote). I know the first quote
was used in the context of the gulag and the agony of its prisoners, yet for me, it can also be applied to
women, especially those who are victims of abuse. I find this quote raw and emotional. It has come to
symbolize women when they are completely broken, even if this was not the context in which it was
written. It shows what they can be tuned into. How in certain circumstances they are forced to act on

It captures why we need feminism. No matter how hard we try, it seems like women will never be
leveled with their male counterparts. Women are always seen as the ones that need protection, the ones
that need the jacket when it s cold. And this frustrates me to no end. I want women to scream and be
taken seriously. I want us to be in a position of power and be terrifying, be something beyond the
limitations of our physical beauty. I wrote down both these quotes because they reminded me of how
the world is more favorable towards men. And to me, these quotes are undeniably connected, if only
by a Gossamer thread, by the theme of women in pain despite their original

Limitations Of The Progressive Era
Progressive Era Reformers
Successes and Limitations
Prior to the 1900s, mass corruption had initially been a part of American society. Stemming from the
overpowered and monopolizing business corporations, immorality, bribery and dishonesty had
integrated itself into politics and local issues. Fortunately, Americans soon began protesting these
conditions and sought to bring about political reform and put power back into the hands of the people,
just like a true democracy. This time period became known as the Progressive Era, an age of both
great achievements and numerous limitations. The Progressive Era succeeded overall concerning the
restrainment of corrupt businesses and the nationwide acceptance of women s suffrage. However,
many important topics were definitely overlooked, most of them in regards to child labor, racism and
the unfair discrimination against the minorities of our country. One of the most prominent things
Progressive Era reformers and federal government did was expose the abusive ways of powerful
businesses and begin to restrain them. In fact, one of the leading figures in relation to eliminating
trusts was the highly influential Theodore Roosevelt. When Theodore Roosevelt was brought into
presidency, he also became famous as an avid trustbuster. President Roosevelt was known to highly
dislike corrupt, ineffective trust and was a threat to big industries. His primary goal was to destroy
trusts he believed to unjust while also controlling and

How Are Athenian Slaves Treated
First off, let take a look at the slavery in Athens. It would be indecent for me to say that these slaves
had an easy life because slavery is simply cruel and inhumane. However, Athenian slaves were the
least ill treated. There were two types of Athenian slaves; privately owned and state owned. For
privately owned slaves, depending on the master, the slave either had domestic responsibilities or was
a tutor and caretaker of the master s children. Slaves purchased by the master of the household were
received into the household community with a ceremony, attended family ceremonies, adopted the
family s religion and were buried in the family graveyard (Bowman, 2007, p34). We can say that
Athenian slaves were very well integrated into their master s family, it even seems like they were
treated pretty similarly to their owner s children. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
State owned slaves had the ability to work in certain higher positioned jobs such as secretaries,
bankers, and law enforcement (Bowman, 2007, p34). They were also paid with small allowances or
with clothing. State slaves had the right to marry and own property while private slaves could not
properly marry, but if the master permitted, they were allowed to live with their partners. However,
any children they made belonged to the

In this view, dynamic capabilities are embedded in organizational processes or routines around
coordination, learning, and transformation and allow a firm to sense opportunities and then to seize

Immigration And The Immigration Act Of 1903
Introduction Immigration to the US has always been a complex phenomenon involving the
development of different people from different nations, cultures, and has added to the United State s
rich history. Immigration has brought both benefits and consequences to the United States in forms of
economic stability and opportunity, mass settlements of foreign peoples, but also culture clash all
resulting in the US attempt to curb immigration with the passing of several legislations. Many
attempts to curb immigration were taken by US Congress with the passing of the Chinese Exclusion
Act in 1882, and the Immigration Act of 1903; all used to insure specific laws and boundaries set on
immigrants. Heavy resentment against immigrants in the US pushed Congress for limitations that
brought many tensions against races like the Irish and Chinese. To capture the true essence of
immigration and its responses by the State, one must make a critical effort in analyzing the historical
patterns of migration to the New World, including the United States. It begins with colonial America
when large populations of people, mainly English, French, German, and Spanish migrated to America
with a deliberate intent to exploit the people, land, and resulting in the creation of caste system of
subjugation. This first set of immigrants to America would be later considered as Old Immigrants,
being differentiated from New Immigrants that would later come in time. As a result of the conquest
of Mexico,

The Case of Nick Smith
Mr. and Mrs. Smith bring their son Nick to the clinic a few weeks early for his 12 month follow up.
The nurse, Joel, measures Nick s height, weight and vital signs. Joel notices that his weight is only
around the 25th percentile for his age. After a brief screening with Joel, Dr. Mike Leonard, the
pediatrician, enters the room for the appointment. He greets the family cheerfully and asks how Nick
is doing. Mr. and Mrs. Smith express concern. Nick has been finicky about eating since the last
appointment and does not seem to have gained much weight. In addition to that, Nick is frequently
cranky and no longer likes being picked up and held. He has also been displaying less activity lately.
He just doesn t seem to have the energy. He is not the sweet, sociable, enthusiastic child they are used
to. The doctor comments that he had noticed that Nick did not seem as alert and cheerful as he had on
previous visits. The parents are especially distressed that Nick has still not yet begun to crawl at an
age when many children are already walking. The doctor examines Nick. The child s skin appears
pale. Dr. Leonard discovers a small lump on Nick s abdomen. Nick does not appear distressed when
the doctor examines the lump. He also tests Nick s reflexes and motor coordination. They are not as
good as they should be. What might be causing Nick s pallor? What are some possible causes of Nick
s weight loss? What might Dr. Leonard suspect is wrong with Nick? What tests should Dr. Leonard

`` Se Habla Espanol ``
Tanya Barrientos explained her struggle with her identity growing up in her writing Se Habla EspaΓ±ol
. Barrientos describes herself as being Guatemalan by birth but pure gringa by circumstance (83).
These circumstances began when her family relocated to the United States when she was three years
old. Once the family moved to the states, her parents only spoke Spanish between themselves. The
children learned to how read, write and speak the English language to fit into society at that time in
1963. (83) Barrientos explained how society shifted and the nation changed its views on ethnic
identity (85) after she graduated college and it came as a backlash to her because she had isolated
herself from the stereotype she constructed in her head. She was insulted to be called Mexican and to
her speaking the Spanish language translated into being poor. She had felt superior to Latino
waitresses and their maid when she told them that she didn t speak Spanish. After the shift in society
Barrientos wondered where she fit it since the Spanish language was the glue that held the new Latino
American community together. Barrientos then set out on a difficult awkward journey to learn the
language that others would assume she would already know. She wanted to nurture the seed of pride
to be called Mexican that her father planted when her father sent her on a summer trip to Mexico City.
Once Barrientos had learned more Spanish and could handle the present, past and future tenses she

How Is Personification Used In The Book Thief
Markus Zusak, in his novel The Book Thief, set in 1939 Nazi Germany, raises many ideas, one of
which is the power of words. Through various techniques including characterisation, personification,
and similes, Zusak conveys messages about the power of words such as their intent, their ability to
form bonds between people, and their importance as vessels of language. Many times, throughout The
Book Thief, Zusak describes words as if they were living things, which gives them personality and
shows us that words can have intent separate to that of the speaker. Through clever personification he
gives personality and traits to words, and helps describe the feelings of characters, such as Hans
visible hangover that heaved itself to his shoulders and sat there like a bag of wet cement. The words
also come to life with descriptive language that shows words were perched on their shoulders, resting
on their heads and hanging from their arms, as Liesel and Hans spoke, and, in a different light, the
weakness of Liesel s words as they, fell off the side of the bed, emptying onto the floor like powder.
Words are also described as having a, human flavour. This makes the audience ... Show more content

The most obvious relationship is that between Hans and Liesel, which is at first facilitated by their
reading The Gravedigger s Handbook. However, words also act as a catalyst for Liesel s relationships

Max started by asking about Mein Kampf, and upon learning that it was the, best book ever, and,
saved [his] life. Also, stealing books from Ilsa s library brought Liesel and Rudy, her, best friend,
closer. Through these scenes and the development of Liesel s relationships with other characters the
audience is shown the power of words in bringing people

Desegregation Of Brown V. Board Of Education
Efforts to desegregate neighborhoods traces back to the 1954 Supreme Court case of Brown v. Board
of Education. In recent times, in an attempt reduce both overcrowding and segregation, the NYC
Department of Education presented a plan to rezone the Upper West Side. In a similar display of rage
as those opposed to Brown v. Board Education demonstrated, parents threatened to take legal action to
stop this plan. Parents from the well off neighborhoods were unwilling to give up the schools that they
felt entitled to due to their choice of residence, but this came at the cost of the children from the other
neighborhoods that are consistently disadvantaged by disparities in the quality of schools. Efforts to
rezone neighborhoods to achieve better ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Segregation in the north occurred in more subtle ways than in the south, and in order to understand
why black neighborhoods in these areas are often so segregated and poorer than white neighborhoods
despite the absence of Jim Crow, it is useful to look at the history that has deliberately created this.
Racial zoning was not uncommon in the early to mid 20th century, and other zoning practices that
didn t use explicitly racist language obscured their racial implications. For example, different areas
were designated as residential, industrial, commercial, etc. and depending on what the area was
deemed, different developments and services were provided to them. The white family neighborhoods
were deemed first residential and the black neighborhoods were deemed industrial zones.
Consequently, pollution creating factories and the construction of undesirable places such as taverns
and liquor stores were built there and converted black neighborhoods into slums. Additionally,
housing discrimination that made it more difficult for blacks to participate in loan insurance programs
more or less excluded them from buying homes and many were limited to living in apartments with
rent higher than whites would have to pay for the same space. As a result, more tenants would occupy
the same space to make rent which led to overcrowding and pressure to pay rent made it increasingly
difficult for blacks to leave

  • 4. Case 27 Southwest Airlines 1.0 Summary of Southwest Airlines: Does LUV Last?* First time in history, Southwest Airlines had its LUV for customers questioned. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) levied a record $10.2 million fine on Southwest Airlines. They accuse them after missing mandatory safety checks of flying 117 planes on nearly 60,000 flights between June 18, 2006, and March 14, 2007. Both the FAA and Southwest testified. FAA officials were blamed for being too close to the airline and being careless in their regulatory duties. Safety was not compromised by the missed inspections; a tiny section of the plane s skin had missed being inspected. The cracks in that section would not have led to any terrible accident. The ... Unions were becoming more aggressive in communicating their frustration, in contrast to earlier days when differences of opinion were resolved more politely and peacefully. On 2001, ramp workers picketed near company headquarters with signs that read Record Profits Empty Pickets . They complained that staff shortages, combined with Southwest s record passenger loads and its drive to improve on time performance, meant that they had to lift more bags and had to do so more quickly, which put them at risk of injury. Though on July 2002, first time in the company history, Southwest s mechanics union asked federal mediators to intervene to break a contract deadlock over pay. While the company was nowhere near a strike, the incident clearly signaled the strains appearing in employee relations. The company was also engaged without much success in a contract renegotiation with flight attendants. July 2003, a group of flight attendants staged a demonstration at the headquarters, carrying signs stating Spread the LUV and handing out cards to travelers that read Give our flight attendants a break . The move was an expression of frustration over management s idea of increasing the flight attendants work hours. • 5. Best Memories Research Paper When most people think of a school they think of hard work yelling teens and just absolute chaos, but they also my think back to when they themselves were in school or even their first year there as freshmen and then think of all of the good and funny memories they had there in that year. I happen to be one of them just thinking back to the beginning of the year and all the memories I have had so far. Heck, some of my best memories are in school like when my balloon popped in class, and when me and my friends messed with the plants we were supposed to grow and even when me and my friends played a few games of UNO in the middle of class. First off, one way I had a great time in class is when my balloon popped in the middle of biology. One reason ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One reason why this is one of my best memories is that we were super loud. This makes it the best because we were super loud and our substitute teacher didn t even care, other than when he asked us if we were done with are working Are you guys done with your work over there and if not you ll have to talk to your teacher but we were already done so we were good. Another reason why this is one of my best memories is none of us were winning. This makes it the best because we are all competitive and none of us were winning, Which is kind of funny because all of us were smack talking each other about who is going to win. Yet I ended up winning and won the next few games of UNO but they were all pretty lengthy and took us most of the hour to play. This makes playing UNO in the middle of class one of the best memories because our teacher didn t even care that much and that none of us were winning even though we were all competitive. Some of my best memories that i have had in my freshman year are when my balloon popped in the middle of class ,and when we messed with my friends plant ,and finally when me and my friends played UNO in the middle of class. These were some of my best memories because when my balloon popped everyone jumped out of their seats and me and my friends couldn t help but laugh, and when we messed with my friends plant and we put a crayon in his plant and waterboarded it, and finally when me and my friends played UNO in the middle of class and our teacher didn t even ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In cases where one project has a higher initial investment than a second mutually exclusive project, the first project may have a lower IRR (expected return), but a higher NPV (increase in shareholders wealth) and should thus be accepted over the second project. A method called marginal IRR can be used to adapt the IRR methodology to this case. ο‚— Another problem with the IRR method is that it may give different rates of return. Suppose there are two discount rates (two IRRs) that make the present value equal to the initial investment. In this case, which rate should be used for comparison with the cutoff rate? The purpose of this question is not to resolve the cases where there are different IRRs. ο‚— Under IRR it is assumed that all the intermediate cash flows are reinvested at the IRR which always not hold true. Which approach is better ο‚— Both NPV and IRR methods yield better decision making data based off them being sophisticated capital budgeting techniques and consider time value of money and life time of the project. ο‚— NPV and IRR methods yield better decision making data based off them being sophisticated capital budgeting techniques as NPV implicitly assumes that any intermediate cash inflows generated by an investment are reinvested at the firm s cost of capital. ο‚— ... Some political changes that took place include: the expanding of democracy, voting privileges, eligibility to hold office requirements, a new constitution, method of choosing presidential electors, the rapid growth of the electorate, political parties, nullification, the removal of governmental deposits, etc. An economic change that shaped US government was mainly the industrial revolution. The industrial revolution came about because of many variables: progresses in transportation and communications, the development of manufacturing innovation, the advancement of new frameworks of business association, and maybe most importantly, increases in population development. As far as population trends, America became more populous as the years went by. The population was about 4 million in 1790. By 1820, it had reached 10 million and 17 million by 1840. New developments in public health played an important role in the population growth. (Brinkley, 222) Railroads were a very efficient way of transportation. They got people and supplies to places faster than in previous times. The telegraph improved communication. Before the telegraph, communication over long distances could only happen in person. • 8. Life Of Pi Reflection Imagine having to survive 227 days aboard a small, unsteady lifeboat with a 450 pound Bengal Tiger. It seems unrealistic, right? In the Novel Life of Pi, an Indian boy named Pi shipwrecks into the Pacific Ocean and finds himself aboard a lifeboat with a predatory animal. To Pi, surviving this journey with a tiger seems impossible at first, but over time, his view of the tiger is drastically changed. Richard Parker, the tiger, serves as three things over the course of the journey: a teacher, an antagonist, and a companion. Despite being an animal, Richard Parker serves as a teacher for Pi on their journey across the Pacific Ocean. When Pi is a child, his father finds it necessary to teach him a scarring lesson about the savageness of predatory animals. He places a goat in the cage of a hungry tiger and makes sure Pi and his brother, Ravi, see how fast the goat is devoured. The purpose of his lesson was to teach the boys that, Every animal is ferocious and dangerous (Martel 38). On the journey with Richard Parker, Pi remembers the lesson his father had taught him as a child and becomes aware that the tiger is to be respected. When aboard the lifeboat, Pi attempts to train Richard Parker to abide on one side of the boat so that Pi may remain aboard the boat also. While attempting to train the tiger, Pi recollects from his father s lesson and from his experience of owning a zoo that, The animal in front of you must know where it stands, whether above you or below you (43). When Pi succeeds in training the tiger, the confidence he needed to survive is boosted. The principle lesson Richard Parker teaches Pi is that he is to be respected and left alone. Once aboard the lifeboat, Richard Parker is seen as threat, or rather an antagonist, to Pi. An antagonist in a story is defined as someone or something that provides an obstacle for the protagonist. Before Pi realizes that he needs to remain situated on the lifeboat, his fear of Richard Parker compels him to stay as far away as possible from the lifeboat. When Richard Parker is swimming towards the lifeboat, Pi yells to him, Leave me alone. Get lost. Drown! Drown (99). Essay on further aspects of contract and tort TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION This assignment will strive to outline points of law including identifying key vitiating factors, including duress and undue influence and illegality as well as forms of discharge of a contract and remedies for that. It will also apply these laws to the cases provided to illustrate the application of these laws. Vitiating factors represent some sort of defect in the formation of the contract. Examples of this are that the contract is based on a mistake or a misrepresentation. Illegality on the other hand, is much more to do with the actual character of the agreement itself. The defendant won at first instance on the basis that the contract was illegal and unenforceable because of public policy. The claimants appealed successfully. The court of appeal held that it would be undesirable in such a case, involving an area regarded as the province of the criminal law, for individual judges exercising a civil jurisdiction to impose their own moral attitudes . In light of this case, I think Adam would have a very strong and pretty straight forward case if he did not know she was a prostitute, however the courts are unlikely to prevent the enforcement of a contract where behaviour concerns to or involves a criminal offence going by the Court of Appeal judgement in Armhouse lee Ltd v Chappel. CASE: MARIA V MR MOHAMMED Transactions, either under contract or as gifts, may be avoided where they have been entered into as a consequence of the undue influence of the person benefiting from them. The effect of undue influence is to make a contract voidable, but delay may bar the right to avoid the agreement. There are two possible situations relating to undue influence, where there is a special relationship and where one does not exist. Where there is a special relationship between the parties, there is a presumption that the transaction is the consequence of undue influence. There are many plans, procedures, or policies that control crime, but law enforcement must understand that it may never end. Addressing crime in a timely manner can alter the aftermath for future occurrences. According to Briggs (2008) the key mystery for these outrageous crimes in Memphis that occurs frequently are linked to the way people live and the misguided housing policy that are implemented in the city (Briggs, 2008). There many low income families who live in neighborhoods outside the traditional ghetto which is increasing the poverty areas that is responsible for the uptick in crime in Memphis (Briggs, 2008). Because of her young age she is quiet honest and this allows her to paint a great picture to the audience of the brutal abuse that Eugene bestows upon his family. Whether it be going to and from work or making a trip to the Eaton Centre with some friends. With my years of riding the TTC I have definitely had a, if not many gendered experiences. Commonplace Book Report What I have noticed through most of the entries in my commonplace book (especially the two stated above) is that I mostly write down something when it induces a negative emotion from me the quotes that rile me up and make me upset. And usually these are the quotes that remind me of the hardships faced by women. As a woman, sexism is a prevalent issue in my life, so when I fight against it, I am fighting for myself. When I came across the first quote, my mind instantaneously conjured up an image of a mentally exhausted person who was beyond any point of functionality. Unsurprisingly, the person I visualized was a woman. I ve noticed this pattern of associating pain and struggle with women is a recurring theme in my life (and is also outlined in the second quote). I know the first quote was used in the context of the gulag and the agony of its prisoners, yet for me, it can also be applied to women, especially those who are victims of abuse. I find this quote raw and emotional. It has come to symbolize women when they are completely broken, even if this was not the context in which it was written. It shows what they can be tuned into. I want us to be in a position of power and be terrifying, be something beyond the limitations of our physical beauty. Fortunately, Americans soon began protesting these conditions and sought to bring about political reform and put power back into the hands of the people, just like a true democracy. The Progressive Era succeeded overall concerning the restrainment of corrupt businesses and the nationwide acceptance of women s suffrage. However, many important topics were definitely overlooked, most of them in regards to child labor, racism and the unfair discrimination against the minorities of our country. One of the most prominent things Progressive Era reformers and federal government did was expose the abusive ways of powerful businesses and begin to restrain them. It would be indecent for me to say that these slaves had an easy life because slavery is simply cruel and inhumane. However, Athenian slaves were the least ill treated. There were two types of Athenian slaves; privately owned and state owned. For privately owned slaves, depending on the master, the slave either had domestic responsibilities or was a tutor and caretaker of the master s children. Slaves purchased by the master of the household were received into the household community with a ceremony, attended family ceremonies, adopted the family s religion and were buried in the family graveyard (Bowman, 2007, p34). Immigration And The Immigration Act Of 1903 Introduction Immigration to the US has always been a complex phenomenon involving the development of different people from different nations, cultures, and has added to the United State s rich history. Immigration has brought both benefits and consequences to the United States in forms of economic stability and opportunity, mass settlements of foreign peoples, but also culture clash all resulting in the US attempt to curb immigration with the passing of several legislations. Many attempts to curb immigration were taken by US Congress with the passing of the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882, and the Immigration Act of 1903; all used to insure specific laws and boundaries set on immigrants. Heavy resentment against immigrants in the US pushed Congress for limitations that brought many tensions against races like the Irish and Chinese. To capture the true essence of immigration and its responses by the State, one must make a critical effort in analyzing the historical patterns of migration to the New World, including the United States. It begins with colonial America when large populations of people, mainly English, French, German, and Spanish migrated to America with a deliberate intent to exploit the people, land, and resulting in the creation of caste system of subjugation. This first set of immigrants to America would be later considered as Old Immigrants, being differentiated from New Immigrants that would later come in time. As a result of the conquest of Mexico, ... Once the family moved to the states, her parents only spoke Spanish between themselves. The children learned to how read, write and speak the English language to fit into society at that time in 1963. She was insulted to be called Mexican and to her speaking the Spanish language translated into being poor. She had felt superior to Latino waitresses and their maid when she told them that she didn t speak Spanish. After the shift in society Barrientos wondered where she fit it since the Spanish language was the glue that held the new Latino American community together. • 29. How Is Personification Used In The Book Thief Markus Zusak, in his novel The Book Thief, set in 1939 Nazi Germany, raises many ideas, one of which is the power of words. Through various techniques including characterisation, personification, and similes, Zusak conveys messages about the power of words such as their intent, their ability to form bonds between people, and their importance as vessels of language. Many times, throughout The Book Thief, Zusak describes words as if they were living things, which gives them personality and shows us that words can have intent separate to that of the speaker. Through clever personification he gives personality and traits to words, and helps describe the feelings of characters, such as Hans visible hangover that heaved itself to his shoulders and sat there like a bag of wet cement. Segregation in the north occurred in more subtle ways than in the south, and in order to understand why black neighborhoods in these areas are often so segregated and poorer than white neighborhoods despite the absence of Jim Crow, it is useful to look at the history that has deliberately created this. Racial zoning was not uncommon in the early to mid 20th century, and other zoning practices that didn t use explicitly racist language obscured their racial implications. For example, different areas were designated as residential, industrial, commercial, etc. and depending on what the area was deemed, different developments and services were provided to them. The white family neighborhoods were deemed first residential and the black neighborhoods were deemed industrial zones. Consequently, pollution creating factories and the construction of undesirable places such as taverns and liquor stores were built there and converted black neighborhoods into slums. Additionally, housing discrimination that made it more difficult for blacks to participate in loan insurance programs more or less excluded them from buying homes and many were limited to living in apartments with rent higher than whites would have to pay for the same space. As a result, more tenants would occupy the same space to make rent which led to overcrowding and pressure to pay rent made it increasingly difficult for blacks to leave ...
