How Does Sylvia Plath Use Humor
Death is Funny: Sylvia Plath s Use of Humor in Lady Lazarus Humor and Sylvia Plath are words not
generally heard in the same sentence. Although her poetry is widely read, we as a society tend to
associate her writing with the inherent darkness in her words, and we tend to ignore everything else,
particularly with regards to the poetry she wrote near the end of her life. The morbidity in her writing
is most definitely there, but it is often expressed using humor. I will be examining Plath s poem Lady
Lazarus, and in particular the way that Plath uses humor throughout the poem through her use of
sarcasm, hyperbole and absurd comparisons, rhyme, and circus imagery. I will also be looking at the
possible reasons why Plath uses humor throughout Lady Lazarus, and what purpose it serves as a
literary device. Plath s strong use of sarcasm is present in Lady Lazarus from the very first lines of the
poem; Plath writes: I have done it again/One year in every ten/I manage it (Plath, 1 3). This opening
stanza is very tongue in cheek, and through the seemingly nondescript, nonchalant way she begins the
poem, it sets up the first stanza as a foil for the next stanza, which begins: A sort of walking miracle,
my skin/Bright as a Nazi lampshade, (4 5). The contrast between the content of the first and second
stanzas gives the first stanza a very sarcastic tone. It sets up the concept that death is no big deal to
Plath; she s died every ten years. The opening line, I have done

How Does The 2008 Games Affect The Economy
Economic Impact To see the impact of the 2008 Games on the Chinese economy, we must first look at
how much money was spent and what it was spent on. While $40 billion is the average number given
when saying how much the 2008 Games cost, only a little more than $6 billion went to sports related
costs, (Gaines, 2015) including $500 million going to building the Bird s Nest, the Olympic track and
field venue. The rest went to a new airport terminal, a light rail, roads and other preparations such as
security and the environmental clean up ( The cost of the Beijing Olympics ). Almost every city that
hosts the Olympics promises to use the new stadiums that are built well beyond when the Games end,
but almost none actually do. Beijing is no different. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Language and Power AQAA level English Language B Essay
Language and power 1
Power is gained in many ways throughout the text. Text I has been written, primarily, to persuade an
audience to share their (bwag) views on the new Sainsburys being built in their medieval heritage
town of Bishops Waltham, therefore it is aimed at residents of the town who are old enough to write a
valid letter of complaint age 18 70. Firstly, imperatives are used to be assertive right from the
beginning of the text. The word write in write a letter today immediately sets a forward and confident
tone to the text, making the matter seem important. As Bishops Waltham is a town without a
superstore, this suggests it is small. This also suggests that the bwag group is also small therefore may

As the law is seen as a very serious matter by everyone, the use of jargon and words that have
connotations of the law, backs up the seriousness that the text is trying to portray. Although the piece
asserts influential power, using jargon of the law makes it seem as if instrumental power is being
asserted. These abstract nouns add a severe tone to the piece which forces the audience to think of
consequences too. Because the consequence of a Sainsburys being built is exaggerated ...the huge
increase in traffic. and ...destroy the vitality. Panic is aroused within the reader as to what might
happen if they don t abide by what they re being told to do as well as thinking of the guilt that they
will feel. This leads to the bwag group gaining power over the audience by making them feel guilty
and putting blame on them if a Sainsburys were to be built. Due to the group proclaiming serious
consequences on the towns people if they do not write letters, the consequences seem drastic, once
again making it feel like instrumental power in the form of the law they have no choice to follow the
instructions as there will be consequences.
In addition, bias is also used to sway the audience decision, making them agree with their (bwag)
views and therefore gaining respect as the audience now see that what they are trying to do is right and
should therefore look up to them. By listing off different negative

Correlation Between Weber s Law And Visual Perception
Abstract The purpose of this study was to measure and record the just noticeable difference
(or JND) thresholds of random participants using their visual based perception and to replicate and
confirm Weber s Law. Through this four level single factor experiment, these participants were asked
to compare two lines which were flashed to them on a computer screen. Their objective at that point
was to choose which line was longer of the two that were shown, and this was repeated 160 times at
four different levels of line sizes: one inch, two inch, three inch, and four inch with each level having
40 trials. Once the JND values were obtained, they were then statistically analyzed and evaluated in
terms of whether or not they were consistent with Weber s Law. Collection along with the analysis of
the data were all done on the University of California, Irvine campus inside the Social Science
Laboratory. Based on the results, we can conclude there is a relationship between Weber s Law and
visual perception, but this may not always be true.
During the 19th century, popular experimental based psychologist named Ernst Weber developed a
theory on human perception, proclaiming that for a difference to be perceived in two stimuli, they
must differ by a certain minimum value, or in other words, a just noticeable difference, also known as
difference limen or difference threshold. His contributions to the subject of psychophysics led to his
theory being named Weber s Law. This law

British Colonies And The New England Colonies
Throughout the New World many British colonies were established for various reasons. A few of those
reasons being for religious freedom, farming, and gold. The way that certain colonies would succeed
and develop depended on geographical factors. Eventually some colonies would flourish through
farming, seaport trade, or industry. In the New England colonies such as Massachusetts, Connecticut,
Rhode Island, and New Hampshire, their economy succeeded through shipbuilding and trading. The
soil up north was very rocky and the New England colonies experienced long winters short summers,
which didn t create ideal farming land. Despite the flawed farming elements, colonists managed to
subsistence farm within the short growing season. This means that the colonists grew just enough
crops to provided to their families. ( New England Colonies. New England Colonies. N.p., n.d. Web.
11 Sept. 2014.) Although New England didn t have the best farming conditions the colonies had an
abundant amount of trees. The trees were cut down and then used as lumber and timber for
shipbuilding. Since the New England colonies were in a close proximity of the sea the colonies
depended heavily on trade and fishing. New England participated in the Triangular Trade, exporting
goods such as lumber, fish, horses and flour then in return the West Indies would supply the colonies
with sugar, molasses, and rum. (Shmoop Editorial Team. Economy in Colonial New England.

Seo ( Search Engine Optimization )
Introduction about SEO (Search Engine Optimization):
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the procedure of getting activity from the free, natural,

the web search engines considers most pertinent to users.

Negative Aspects Of Masculinity
Gone are the days of masculinity being a mountain man or a cutthroat businessman, society is no
longer the 1800s or an episode of MadMen. Currently, some of society s expectations of masculinity
(as defined by experts) are a desire to win, need for emotional control, dominance (including that over
women), violence, sexual promiscuity, and a pursuit of status. However masculinity can also be
something that is positive. Like a steady rock to build emotional support upon, a stoic person can be
an excellent resource. This can be like the person that hides their emotion in order to better others that
need a push forward when their emotions get the better of them. This is where masculine ideals can be
a double edged sword because these traits can be beneficial in some manners but it can also have some
detriments that occur consequently. It is not that men are not masculine; it is that masculinity does not
represent men anymore. Because of the negative side effects of men exhibiting masculine traits they
should no longer be expected to adhere to all of these traditional ideals.
The traits that are normally associated with masculinity are ones that can be detrimental to the mental
health of the people who have these traits. For example in an analysis of seventy eight different
studies, researchers at the University of Indiana Bloomington found that men who exhibited masculine
traits were more likely to have mental health issues such as depression. The same men were also less
likely to seek help when it came to their mental health issues. The traits that were most commonly
associated with the negative mental health were being self reliant, sexual promiscuity, and having
dominance or power over women. Expecting someone to be stoic and only depending on themselves
means they will be less likely to go and seek psychological help as they would feel that they need to
be able to solve their problems themselves. This societal pressure upon men to be dominating and
stoic is not good for their mental health. So the pressure should be lessened or removed to the point
where men are no longer expected to have these traits as the other option leads to depression that goes
untreated. This meta analysis, headed by Associate

Examples Of Tragedy In Waiting For Godot
Waiting for Godot is a tragicomedy, which deviates from traditional theatrical conventions in order to
conform to the Theatre of the Absurd by having an almost empty stage, circular plot with small
changes and language that does not assign any meaning to the play. This is done to show the
existentialist nature of human life, which is that one is to create their own essence. Waiting for Godot
starts with introducing the setting as minimal, which is done to highlight the existentialist nature in the
world where the humans are left alone to create a purpose to their lives. Traditional plays, like Hamlet,
does not contain any stage directions about the props and leave it upon the director to assign what
props the actors are to have on stage. The stage directions in the beginning of Waiting for Godot are A
country road. A tree. Evening. (1), which limits the director to have a very bare stage. The bare stage
leaves the actors actions, or inactions, in focus. In Martin Esslin s essay The Theatre of the Absurd , he
coins the genre Theatre of the Absurd by referring to three plays which all challenged the traditional
theatrical conventions. A definition of the genre is that it is absurd, that which has no purpose (4) and
therefore describes our existential lives. He attempts to explore this genre where he ... Show more

In the conventional drama every word means what it says (Esslin, 13), whereas in Waiting for Godot it
deviates from the traditional conventions in order to conform to the Theatre of the Absurd. The
rejection of assigning meaning to words is shown throughout the play, for instance Lucky s speech is
difficult for the audience to make any sense of. This is also demonstrated in the many language games
that Vladimir and Estragon play in order to avoid silence. Here is one

Conformity Of Skipping School
Conformity is the act of changing behavior as a result of real or imagined group pressure. Everyone at
one point has experienced this type of pressure at one point in their life. I remember this one time
when I was confirmed into doing something because everyone was doing it. This happened back in
my high school years. There was a point in the eleventh grade that I felt kind of peer pressured into
skipping school. I never really had the urge to be a bad kid and go skipping. I actually loved coming to
school. I loved learning new things I was always that kind of person. But of course I started hanging
out with the wrong group of people. Which I never should have but I wanted to be so called cool. I
wanted and had the desire to fit in always, I always wanted acceptance and to be popular. I honestly
regret ever going skipping. It wasn t only once that it happened. It occurred multiple times until it got
out of hand and I was caught by my parents. I never heard the last of it from them even until this day I
still hear it. From that point on I was always brought to school; until the day I graduated. I regret these
poor decisions I made, I feel like if I wouldn t have done it I would have finished my schooling by
now because I found it acceptable to skip school. All because I wanted to be accepted and be one ...

In a time of ruthless dictators, Jomo Kenyatta was one of the most influential and controversial leaders

The Pros And Cons Of Negligence Law
A) The topic concerning this case is negligence law. The issue is whether Simon would be successful
perusing a negligence claim.
Establishing negligence requires the plaintiff to prove the three elements of negligence before a court.
The elements are that, the defendant owed the plaintiff a duty of care, the duty of care was breached,
and that the harms suffered were directly related to the defendant s breach. For a successful claims the
plaintiff must satisfy all three by the balance of probabilities, which has been the case since Donohue
v Stevenson. Simon must therefore prove that there was a duty of care owed to him by the defendant,
his teacher, Mr Philpot. Therefore, he must prove that the harm suffered would have been reasonably
foreseeable due to the actions or omission of the defendant. In this case, Mr Philpot owes Simon a
duty of care, as it is reasonably foreseeable that a failure to provide sufficient supervision could result
in injury when considering the nature of the environment they are in and the age of the students.
Therefore, the first element is satisfied.
The Civil Liabilities Act 2002 defines negligence as a failure on the part of the defendant which
results in the harm of the plaintiff which could have been prevented by taking reasonable care. The
breach of duty must be foreseeable, Sullivan v Moody. The risk must be not insignificant, and a
reasonable person under similar circumstances would have taken precaution against the harm. In this

Why Did The Samurai Attack Dbq
The sly and flexible samurai prepares to unleash his katana while opponent, the knight rides
courteously on his horse ready to pull out his sword that lies within a compartment built in his armor.
Who will win this deadly battle? The samurai, of course thanks to his agility as well as being ready to
attack whenever threatened. This essay will discuss the advantages that the samurai has against the
knight, if the two were to ever come in contact on the battlefield. One of the ways that Samurais have
an advantage against knights is due to their armor. In document D, written by Terry Bennett, it says
The helmet bowl (of a samurai) was made of 8 12 iron plates. The samurai very much needed this
because it was said and proven to be true that a knight s sword could slice through one s head and only
be stopped by the teeth of a human. Another piece of evidence that supports my claim is in document
D as well. The text states Samurai did not wear armor on their right arm so they could easily draw
their bow. This was a major advantage to the samurai because they needed to have the ability to draw

Where they strive to be the best, compete against others, world powers against another. But, in the vast
reality of the cosmos, the Earth, is nothing more than a tiny little pale blue dot. Described none other

Argyle environment, he relied with, Cane Toads are the main species that are having a major impact
on the Argyle environment, as they have cautioned many little insects and animals from their presence
through Australia. Cane toads are native to Central and South America, Cane Toads were first
introduced to Australia in 1935 as there was approximately 3000 that were released into Northern
Queensland. They were released as a mean of controlling the introduced French Cane Beetle and the
Greyback Cane Beetle, by controlling, meaning by reducing the population of these introduced
species. Cane Toads pose a threat to wildlife when eaten, because they release a toxin (bufotoxin)
from across their backs. This toxin is present in both the adults and tadpoles, meaning Cane Toads

Lance Armstrong And Steroid
The eight hour a day conditioning, the five a.m. workouts, the strict diet, the intense focus, the missing
out on important life milestones. These are all apart of the life of a professional athlete. These careers
take many years of impossible training and dedication, but what if a pill could reduce the amount of
time spent in the gym. Throughout their careers, Lance Armstrong, Jose Canseco, and Marion Jones
all used personal enhancement devices to try and achieve the American Dream of personal wealth and
success, but ultimately lost all of their accomplishments due to laws cracking down on steroid use.
Steroids are often used to treat tissue damage or inflammation, but they are also used illegally in
professional sports. Sometimes the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the investigation of Armstrong, the USADA released its one thousand page report, with
affidavits from eleven former teammates who said that they and Lance had used performance
enhancing drugs (Hall). These affidavits proved that during the multiple Tour De Frances that
Armstrong and the US Postal Team won, most everyone on the team had used some kind of steroid.
During his interview with Oprah, Armstrong admitted that as the leader of the team, and the leader
leads by example in respect to the drug use (Lance Armstrong on Oprah Part 1). By being the leader of
the team, many individuals looked up to Armstrong and when he decided to use the drugs, they either
did them with him or turned a blind eye. After the series of affidavits, Lance was stripped of all seven
Tour de France titles and banned for life from elite competition (Lance Armstrong on Oprah Part 1).
By losing the Tour de France titles, he lost a part of his American Dream which was the personal
success. In addition, Armstrong also lost all of his sponsorships from many companies including Nike,
Nissan, and finally after several months Oakley also dropped him. By losing his sponsorships,
Armstrong also lost a projected 150 million dollars in possible earnings. Currently Armstrong lives in

In 1986 when the space shuttle Challenger launched from Kennedy Space Center people watched in
awe for a little more than a minute before the shuttle exploded in flight. This was the first of only two
major accidents that occurred during over two decades of NASA s shuttle program. Many would
consider the Challenger disaster to be a fluke that could not have been prevented or predicted but, In
truth, it was an accident waiting to happen and was a symptom of systemic problems that were
occurring at NASA during that era. The 1986 space shuttle Challenger disaster was cause by a number
of factors including structural failure of the shuttle, a change in NASA s work environment from the
days of the successful Apollo missions, and additional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The bidding for the Solid Rocket booster was flawed from the beginning. Solid engineering and safety
gave way to the impulse help out one s cronies and save money. As a result, better boosters were
passed up so that a flawed booster could be designed and built. According to J. Hunley Author of the
book The Development of Propulsion Technology for U.S. Space Launch Vehicles 1926 1991, Since
Thiokol had plants in Utah, NASA administrator James C. Fletcher s home state, the decision was
controversial (Hunley 269). In addition, of the four bids put in to build the booster, one company,
Aerojet proposed a solid welded case on the grounds that sealed cases would be safer than segmented
cases (Hunley 268). Morton Thiokol, the company that actually built the boosters with a segmented
case, came in second to last in the bidding but won the contract for scoring best in the cost category of
the evaluation (Hunley 269). Even though safer solid rocket boosters were presented to NASA, the
booster that ultimately caused the Challenger disaster was chosen based on cost instead of safety.
In addition to controversial bidding practices the solid rocket booster had a design flaw that was
known to be an issue for years before the Challenger s final flight took place. The First flight using the
booster was in 1980 (Hunley 275). Since the boosters are recovered after every mission, by 1981
NASA could tell that the booster s segment seals were already showing signs of

Cognitive Dissonance
Leon Festinger and James M. Carlsmith (1959) were interested in the cognitive dissonance, which can
influence a person decision to choose one action or thought over another. The researchers were also
interested in forced compliance, where authority can force individuals to say or act in a way that is
conflicting to one s own private opinion, whereas, the individual s attitude is altered through
persuasion and authority. Force was operationally defined as the amount of reward offered for lying
and cognitive dissonance experienced from the participant s rated enjoyment of the tasks. Therefore,
the researchers investigated if cognitive dissonance could be created through forced compliance
behavior. Furthermore, Festinger and Carlsmith hypothesized ... Show more content on

Dust Bowl Criticism
The printed work of the Dust Bowl written by Donald Worster tells of the devastating man made
events that occurred between 1929 and 1939. Worster described this time in history as the darkest
moment life in the southern plains encountered in the twentieth century (4) which was a time where
drought, poverty, and famine were of concern. Worster also ties the Great Depression with the Dust
Bowl and said that the same society produced them both because of the weakness of America (5). He
strongly believes that the Dust Bowl was not a disaster created by nature, but a crisis created by man
due to capitalism. Dust Bowl gives a powerful stance on how man ignored the limits of the land which
led them into the dirty thirties; however, his beliefs cause him to disregard the disaster as the fault of
nature, and specifically blamed man. Large numbers of people migrated to the grasslands and plowed
the areas to farm. Over time, the soil wore out and the cycle of rain stopped, causing the soil to blow
away. The natural way that wildlife lived was disrupted by civilization, and since nature was damaged,
the mutual cooperation between humans, land, animals, and soil failed. Man wanted to proceed
forward, but their desire for wealth caused them a Great Depression, and a horrendous storm that
wiped away their land. The expansion to the frontier and the wearing of the soil was not to make a
living, but to bring more money to the people even though the soil was not capable of growing a
sizable amount of crops. The point that Worster clearly makes throughout his book was that capitalism
caused the problem. He believed the two linked disasters, The Dust Bowl and The Great Depression
were entirely man made because of flaws in American society. Worster could not define capitalism
with one simple meaning, but says that man viewed the land as a business. They worked the land until
they could not work it anymore, and even then, they continued to plow the fields trying to get every
last grain that would provide them with more money. Worster wrote that man had a right to use the
land because the highest economic rewards go to those who have done the most to extract nature from
all it can yield (Worster 6). Therefore, the land was

Theodore Roosevelt And The Progressive Era
Upon the arrival of the Progressive Era, America shared several common characteristics of the
industrialized countries: drastically increased population, overcrowded cities, poor working
conditions, and significant economic disparity. Three presidents Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft,
and Woodrow Wilson during the Progressive Era made essential domestic reforms and launched new
foreign policies in order to construct America into a more prosperous country and a leading power
around the globe. A driving force in the Progressive Era, Theodore Roosevelt believed that the
government had the right to regulate big business and that the government should use its resources to
help achieve economic and social justice. In his first term, he launched the Square Deal, which
focused on the control of corporations, the consumer protection, and the conservation of natural
resources. In order to achieve his goal of controlling the large corporations and railroad companies,
Congress, under Roosevelt s urge, created the Department of Commerce and Labor to monitor
corporations, help dissolve monopolies, and promote fair competition between companies. At the
same year, Roosevelt initialized the Elkins Act of 1903 to end the practice of railroad granting
shipping rebates to certain companies, and three years later, Theodore s administration issued the
Hepburn Act, which gave the Interstate Commerce Commission the power to regulate shipping rates
on railroads. The second element in the

Summary Of A Lady s Dressing Room
A Lady s Dressing Room
A Lady s Dressing Room by Jonathan Swift is an interesting work of literature, especially for the time
period it was written in. A poem like such is about the other side of women men typically do not see
(hints the title). By revealing the somewhat more embarrassing side of women, it shows the
surrounding society that they not only take forever to get ready, but instead reveal the not so pretty
side of the stereotypical women. Society during this time silences women and does not allow them to
be true to themselves. Women are also held to a higher more proper standard than the men when it
comes to society formalities. Swift integrates different literary ideas throughout this piece, he includes
ideas such as: Feminine rhyme, prosody, imagery, a pastoral message in addition to ekphrasis.
First off feminine rhyme as well as prosody is used throughout the whole piece. For an example in
lines three and four there is a clear connection between the two rhyming words, it states: The goddess
from her chamber issues, /Arrayed in lace, brocades and tissues (Swift,3 4). Clearly in this line Swift
is describing that some lady issues need to be handled with tissues . This line is a great example of
feminine rhyme as well as prosody, because women are often thought of as more sensitive than men
and this continual rhyming pattern remains present throughout the whole poem. By taking on a female
perspective from the beginning Swift is not only challenging the power dynamics is society, he is also
giving voice to the females and showing the more sensitive side. Think about it this way, if a male
would have written this piece it more than likely would not been emotional and sensitive because men
are typically more insensitive than women.
Secondly another great literary device Swift uses would be imagery. Imagery is throughout the
remainder of the poem as it is describing the daily routine of a women, but the one part that is bolder
than the others would have to be when he states: And first a dirty smock appeared/Beneath the armpits
well besmeared (Swift, 11 12). This is a great example of imagery being used. By painting a picture in
the reader s mind, the author is giving it a more real time

My Interpretation Of The Battle Of Gettysburg
My interpretation of the battle of Gettysburg began forming two years ago when I visited the grounds
that 51,000 men had died on. It was a hot summer day; I was tired, hungry, sick of walking, and was
wondering if this very long field trip would ever end. The men that fought on this battle field felt the
same way during the summer of 1863. From reading Killer Angels and The Pickett s Charge Nobody
Knows, I have a much better perception and understanding of what actually happened during the war.
Before my readings, I thought there were the good guys who won and the bad guys who lost. I now
understand on a deeper level what those men on both sides of the battle field were going through, and
that they were men of God that were not only fighting for what they believed in but also for each
other. Killer Angels is a particularly moving novel that is told from alternating points of view of
several important men that played major roles during this war. Michael Sharra taught me what it
would actually be like to be a soldier during the Civil War. Sharra provides many detailed maps of
both army s positions, which gave me a better idea of where the men were posted, where they were
headed, and which rout of attack the generals had their men on. Throughout the book I was shown the
pain that these men went through, how loyal these men were to their duty, and how important each
decision that each general made on the battle field truly was. The battle that these men fought makes

Reflection Of Visit To The Mapleshire Nursing And...
During the visit to the Mapleshire Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, I was able to tour the facility
and also meet and speak with employees and patients. When I arrived at the center, my first interaction
was with the assistant director of activities whose name was Madison. Madison has been officially
employed at this facility for two years but has been involved for many years since her mother is the
admissions director at the center. She was able to answer the majority of the questions other students
and I had about the daily functioning of the facility. After interviewing Madison, I took a tour of the
facility and spoke with two patients. The purpose of this paper is to reflect and share my insight from
interviewing the employee and two patients, and the observations I noted after the completion of a
three unit tour. Additionally, it is necessary to relate my experience to the content learned in class and
compare the similarities between the classroom work and the reality of the older population.
Daily Life of the Patients
To begin, Madison described the daily activities of the patients in the facility. She stated that patients
typically rise around 6:00 a.m. and a certified nursing assistant helps the patients bathe, brush their
hair and teeth, and get ready for the day. From there, some patients go to therapy while others go to
breakfast around 8:45 a.m. The patients then participate in morning activities such as reading the
newspaper, watching the news, or

Descriptive Essay On A Dreamy Island
Imagine a place of pure bliss, where time is seemingly endless, simplicity is valued and relaxation is a
top priority. In our everyday lives where stress is customary and chaos is routine, it is hard to visualize
a place of such carefreeness. I too believed there could be no such place until I found it for myself.
When I close my eyes and imagine, I can still clearly hear the gentle splash of the waves lapping the
shoreline, and feel the slight ocean breeze whizz through my hair, sending it flying in every direction.
During phases of anxiety and trouble, there is one place in particular that my heart longs to be. Marco
Island, Florida.
My father proposed the idea of vacationing on Marco Island before the summer of 2016 after hearing
multiple people rave to him about the breathtaking beaches and unforgettable experiences. My mother
and I had never heard of Marco Island, but after five short minutes of browsing through images online
of the picturesque island, we were instantly captivated and could not wait to see it for ourselves. After
what seemed like an eternity of waiting for our trip to commence, we finally arrived on the dreamy
island. Grinning from ear to ear, we buckled ourselves into the rental car, feeling anxious to explore.
Unlike in Missouri, glossy green palm trees lined every street, which made us feel like we had entered
an alternate universe. Rather than staying at a hotel, we rented a beach house that was supposedly only
a six minute walk from Marco

Are Video Games Art Summary
Personal Response: Are Videogames Art? I consider any form of creative production a type of art.
Stanton states in his article: to each their own. therefore, in my opinion, anything created that can
cause a person to become immersed within it and feel some sort of emotion is a form of art, including
video games. I don t typically play games per say, but when I do spend my time playing or even
watching games such as Final Fantasy I can t help but feel overcome with emotion when a character
dies or when characters fall in love. I become immersed when I see games with amazing graphics and
rich sound designs, they become experiences for me. Q/A What does Stanton mean by his title? What

Who Framed Roger Ebert is asking who made Roger Ebert s question or argument at hand: are
videogames art? a creation of art, hanged on the wall for everyone to define. The answer to Who
Framed Roger Ebert is simply stated, we , the people who continuously engaged with Ebert s opinion
and subconsciously put art on the pedestal . Explain your understanding of the distinction between
mass culture and high art (para.9) or Kitsch and Sublime art (para.10) Kitsch or mass culture is the
evolution of a standard that starts out immaterial and then gradually becomes something more relevant
in society. However, sublime art or high art is a creation of art that has become continuously loved by
society or completely forgotten. Summarize the controversy over the definition of art. What is Stanton
s position on the subject? Do you agree with him? The definition of art is ever changing and its
definition is completely varied amongst separate people. A main idea created by Roger Ebert was that
art is dependent on what a person can learn from another human being. However, there is also the
suggesting that art can t really be defined. In the article Who Framed Roger Ebert , Rich Stanton
provides an opposing opinion that art is indefinable and the current accepted definitions of art in our
society negatively affects the gaming genre. I concur with Stanton s opposing opinion that art is
indefinable because of many variations

Causes Of The American Revolution
The American Revolution is also famous as US independence war or the Revolutionary War. The
disagreement arose from rising stress between inhabitants of Great Britain s 13 North American
colonies and the regal government, which symbolizes the British crown. Skirmishes between British
crowds and regal militiamen in Lexington and Concord in 1775 kicked off the armed clash, and by the
subsequent summer, the radicals were shaking a full scale conflict for their independence. France goes

would not formally stop in anticipation of 1783 (Adams, G.B).
Land Campaigns To 1778
Americans fought the war ashore with fundamentally two sorts of affiliation: the Army and the state

  • 2. How Does Sylvia Plath Use Humor Death is Funny: Sylvia Plath s Use of Humor in Lady Lazarus Humor and Sylvia Plath are words not generally heard in the same sentence. Although her poetry is widely read, we as a society tend to associate her writing with the inherent darkness in her words, and we tend to ignore everything else, particularly with regards to the poetry she wrote near the end of her life. The morbidity in her writing is most definitely there, but it is often expressed using humor. I will be examining Plath s poem Lady Lazarus, and in particular the way that Plath uses humor throughout the poem through her use of sarcasm, hyperbole and absurd comparisons, rhyme, and circus imagery. I will also be looking at the possible reasons why Plath uses humor throughout Lady Lazarus, and what purpose it serves as a literary device. Plath s strong use of sarcasm is present in Lady Lazarus from the very first lines of the poem; Plath writes: I have done it again/One year in every ten/I manage it (Plath, 1 3). This opening stanza is very tongue in cheek, and through the seemingly nondescript, nonchalant way she begins the poem, it sets up the first stanza as a foil for the next stanza, which begins: A sort of walking miracle, my skin/Bright as a Nazi lampshade, (4 5). The contrast between the content of the first and second stanzas gives the first stanza a very sarcastic tone. It sets up the concept that death is no big deal to Plath; she s died every ten years. The opening line, I have done ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. How Does The 2008 Games Affect The Economy Economic Impact To see the impact of the 2008 Games on the Chinese economy, we must first look at how much money was spent and what it was spent on. While $40 billion is the average number given when saying how much the 2008 Games cost, only a little more than $6 billion went to sports related costs, (Gaines, 2015) including $500 million going to building the Bird s Nest, the Olympic track and field venue. The rest went to a new airport terminal, a light rail, roads and other preparations such as security and the environmental clean up ( The cost of the Beijing Olympics ). • 4. Language and Power AQAA level English Language B Essay Language and power 1 Power is gained in many ways throughout the text. Text I has been written, primarily, to persuade an audience to share their (bwag) views on the new Sainsburys being built in their medieval heritage town of Bishops Waltham, therefore it is aimed at residents of the town who are old enough to write a valid letter of complaint age 18 70. Firstly, imperatives are used to be assertive right from the beginning of the text. The word write in write a letter today immediately sets a forward and confident tone to the text, making the matter seem important. As Bishops Waltham is a town without a superstore, this suggests it is small. This also suggests that the bwag group is also small therefore may not be well known to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the law is seen as a very serious matter by everyone, the use of jargon and words that have connotations of the law, backs up the seriousness that the text is trying to portray. Although the piece asserts influential power, using jargon of the law makes it seem as if instrumental power is being asserted. These abstract nouns add a severe tone to the piece which forces the audience to think of consequences too. Because the consequence of a Sainsburys being built is exaggerated ...the huge increase in traffic. and ...destroy the vitality. Panic is aroused within the reader as to what might happen if they don t abide by what they re being told to do as well as thinking of the guilt that they will feel. This leads to the bwag group gaining power over the audience by making them feel guilty and putting blame on them if a Sainsburys were to be built. Due to the group proclaiming serious consequences on the towns people if they do not write letters, the consequences seem drastic, once again making it feel like instrumental power in the form of the law they have no choice to follow the instructions as there will be consequences. In addition, bias is also used to sway the audience decision, making them agree with their (bwag) views and therefore gaining respect as the audience now see that what they are trying to do is right and should therefore look up to them. • 5. Correlation Between Weber s Law And Visual Perception Abstract The purpose of this study was to measure and record the just noticeable difference (or JND) thresholds of random participants using their visual based perception and to replicate and confirm Weber s Law. Through this four level single factor experiment, these participants were asked to compare two lines which were flashed to them on a computer screen. Their objective at that point was to choose which line was longer of the two that were shown, and this was repeated 160 times at four different levels of line sizes: one inch, two inch, three inch, and four inch with each level having 40 trials. Once the JND values were obtained, they were then statistically analyzed and evaluated in terms of whether or not they were consistent with Weber s Law. Collection along with the analysis of the data were all done on the University of California, Irvine campus inside the Social Science Laboratory. Based on the results, we can conclude there is a relationship between Weber s Law and visual perception, but this may not always be true. During the 19th century, popular experimental based psychologist named Ernst Weber developed a theory on human perception, proclaiming that for a difference to be perceived in two stimuli, they must differ by a certain minimum value, or in other words, a just noticeable difference, also known as difference limen or difference threshold. His contributions to the subject of psychophysics led to his theory being named Weber s Law. This law ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. British Colonies And The New England Colonies Throughout the New World many British colonies were established for various reasons. A few of those reasons being for religious freedom, farming, and gold. The way that certain colonies would succeed and develop depended on geographical factors. Eventually some colonies would flourish through farming, seaport trade, or industry. In the New England colonies such as Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire, their economy succeeded through shipbuilding and trading. The soil up north was very rocky and the New England colonies experienced long winters short summers, which didn t create ideal farming land. Despite the flawed farming elements, colonists managed to subsistence farm within the short growing season. This means that the colonists grew just enough crops to provided to their families. ( New England Colonies. New England Colonies. N.p., n.d. Web. 11 Sept. 2014.) Although New England didn t have the best farming conditions the colonies had an abundant amount of trees. The trees were cut down and then used as lumber and timber for shipbuilding. Since the New England colonies were in a close proximity of the sea the colonies depended heavily on trade and fishing. New England participated in the Triangular Trade, exporting goods such as lumber, fish, horses and flour then in return the West Indies would supply the colonies with sugar, molasses, and rum. • 8. Negative Aspects Of Masculinity Gone are the days of masculinity being a mountain man or a cutthroat businessman, society is no longer the 1800s or an episode of MadMen. Currently, some of society s expectations of masculinity (as defined by experts) are a desire to win, need for emotional control, dominance (including that over women), violence, sexual promiscuity, and a pursuit of status. However masculinity can also be something that is positive. Like a steady rock to build emotional support upon, a stoic person can be an excellent resource. This can be like the person that hides their emotion in order to better others that need a push forward when their emotions get the better of them. This is where masculine ideals can be a double edged sword because these traits can be beneficial in some manners but it can also have some detriments that occur consequently. It is not that men are not masculine; it is that masculinity does not represent men anymore. Because of the negative side effects of men exhibiting masculine traits they should no longer be expected to adhere to all of these traditional ideals. The traits that are normally associated with masculinity are ones that can be detrimental to the mental health of the people who have these traits. For example in an analysis of seventy eight different studies, researchers at the University of Indiana Bloomington found that men who exhibited masculine traits were more likely to have mental health issues such as depression. The same men were also less likely to seek help when it came to their mental health issues. The traits that were most commonly associated with the negative mental health were being self reliant, sexual promiscuity, and having dominance or power over women. Expecting someone to be stoic and only depending on themselves means they will be less likely to go and seek psychological help as they would feel that they need to be able to solve their problems themselves. This societal pressure upon men to be dominating and stoic is not good for their mental health. So the pressure should be lessened or removed to the point where men are no longer expected to have these traits as the other option leads to depression that goes untreated. This meta analysis, headed by Associate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Examples Of Tragedy In Waiting For Godot Waiting for Godot is a tragicomedy, which deviates from traditional theatrical conventions in order to conform to the Theatre of the Absurd by having an almost empty stage, circular plot with small changes and language that does not assign any meaning to the play. This is done to show the existentialist nature of human life, which is that one is to create their own essence. Waiting for Godot starts with introducing the setting as minimal, which is done to highlight the existentialist nature in the world where the humans are left alone to create a purpose to their lives. Traditional plays, like Hamlet, does not contain any stage directions about the props and leave it upon the director to assign what props the actors are to have on stage. The stage directions in the beginning of Waiting for Godot are A country road. A tree. Evening. (1), which limits the director to have a very bare stage. The bare stage leaves the actors actions, or inactions, in focus. In Martin Esslin s essay The Theatre of the Absurd , he coins the genre Theatre of the Absurd by referring to three plays which all challenged the traditional theatrical conventions. A definition of the genre is that it is absurd, that which has no purpose (4) and therefore describes our existential lives. He attempts to explore this genre where he ... Everyone at one point has experienced this type of pressure at one point in their life. I remember this one time when I was confirmed into doing something because everyone was doing it. This happened back in my high school years. There was a point in the eleventh grade that I felt kind of peer pressured into skipping school. I never really had the urge to be a bad kid and go skipping. I actually loved coming to school. I loved learning new things I was always that kind of person. But of course I started hanging out with the wrong group of people. Which I never should have but I wanted to be so called cool. I wanted and had the desire to fit in always, I always wanted acceptance and to be popular. I honestly regret ever going skipping. It wasn t only once that it happened. It occurred multiple times until it got out of hand and I was caught by my parents. I never heard the last of it from them even until this day I still hear it. From that point on I was always brought to school; until the day I graduated. His story has inspired many around the world from his humble beginnings, story of sacrifice, and dedication on the racetrack and in the fight against the Axis powers. He is relatable, not in the fact of his being a prisoner of war and Olympic athlete, but in the fact that everyone must eventually remain optimistic in his or her struggles in order to overcome them, much like how he dealt with being a subject of war crimes and a struggling alcoholic. In 1951, The Mau Mau Rebellion, a conflict between the Mau Mau protesters and the British Military began. In response, the British declared a state of emergency and banned the KAU. • 14. The Pros And Cons Of Negligence Law A) The topic concerning this case is negligence law. The issue is whether Simon would be successful perusing a negligence claim. Establishing negligence requires the plaintiff to prove the three elements of negligence before a court. The elements are that, the defendant owed the plaintiff a duty of care, the duty of care was breached, and that the harms suffered were directly related to the defendant s breach. For a successful claims the plaintiff must satisfy all three by the balance of probabilities, which has been the case since Donohue v Stevenson. Simon must therefore prove that there was a duty of care owed to him by the defendant, his teacher, Mr Philpot. Therefore, he must prove that the harm suffered would have been reasonably foreseeable due to the actions or omission of the defendant. In this case, Mr Philpot owes Simon a duty of care, as it is reasonably foreseeable that a failure to provide sufficient supervision could result in injury when considering the nature of the environment they are in and the age of the students. Therefore, the first element is satisfied. The Civil Liabilities Act 2002 defines negligence as a failure on the part of the defendant which results in the harm of the plaintiff which could have been prevented by taking reasonable care. The breach of duty must be foreseeable, Sullivan v Moody. The risk must be not insignificant, and a reasonable person under similar circumstances would have taken precaution against the harm. Why Did The Samurai Attack Dbq The sly and flexible samurai prepares to unleash his katana while opponent, the knight rides courteously on his horse ready to pull out his sword that lies within a compartment built in his armor. Who will win this deadly battle? The samurai, of course thanks to his agility as well as being ready to attack whenever threatened. This essay will discuss the advantages that the samurai has against the knight, if the two were to ever come in contact on the battlefield. One of the ways that Samurais have an advantage against knights is due to their armor. In document D, written by Terry Bennett, it says The helmet bowl (of a samurai) was made of 8 12 iron plates. The samurai very much needed this because it was said and proven to be true that a knight s sword could slice through one s head and only be stopped by the teeth of a human. • 24. Dust Bowl Criticism The printed work of the Dust Bowl written by Donald Worster tells of the devastating man made events that occurred between 1929 and 1939. Worster described this time in history as the darkest moment life in the southern plains encountered in the twentieth century (4) which was a time where drought, poverty, and famine were of concern. Worster also ties the Great Depression with the Dust Bowl and said that the same society produced them both because of the weakness of America (5). He strongly believes that the Dust Bowl was not a disaster created by nature, but a crisis created by man due to capitalism. Dust Bowl gives a powerful stance on how man ignored the limits of the land which led them into the dirty thirties; however, his beliefs cause him to disregard the disaster as the fault of nature, and specifically blamed man. Large numbers of people migrated to the grasslands and plowed the areas to farm. Over time, the soil wore out and the cycle of rain stopped, causing the soil to blow away. The natural way that wildlife lived was disrupted by civilization, and since nature was damaged, the mutual cooperation between humans, land, animals, and soil failed. Man wanted to proceed forward, but their desire for wealth caused them a Great Depression, and a horrendous storm that wiped away their land. The expansion to the frontier and the wearing of the soil was not to make a living, but to bring more money to the people even though the soil was not capable of growing a sizable amount of crops. The point that Worster clearly makes throughout his book was that capitalism caused the problem. He believed the two linked disasters, The Dust Bowl and The Great Depression were entirely man made because of flaws in American society. Worster could not define capitalism with one simple meaning, but says that man viewed the land as a business. They worked the land until they could not work it anymore, and even then, they continued to plow the fields trying to get every last grain that would provide them with more money. Worster wrote that man had a right to use the land because the highest economic rewards go to those who have done the most to extract nature from all it can yield (Worster 6). Three presidents Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, and Woodrow Wilson during the Progressive Era made essential domestic reforms and launched new foreign policies in order to construct America into a more prosperous country and a leading power around the globe. A driving force in the Progressive Era, Theodore Roosevelt believed that the government had the right to regulate big business and that the government should use its resources to help achieve economic and social justice. In his first term, he launched the Square Deal, which focused on the control of corporations, the consumer protection, and the conservation of natural resources. In order to achieve his goal of controlling the large corporations and railroad companies, Congress, under Roosevelt s urge, created the Department of Commerce and Labor to monitor corporations, help dissolve monopolies, and promote fair competition between companies. At the same year, Roosevelt initialized the Elkins Act of 1903 to end the practice of railroad granting shipping rebates to certain companies, and three years later, Theodore s administration issued the Hepburn Act, which gave the Interstate Commerce Commission the power to regulate shipping rates on railroads. • 26. Summary Of A Lady s Dressing Room A Lady s Dressing Room A Lady s Dressing Room by Jonathan Swift is an interesting work of literature, especially for the time period it was written in. A poem like such is about the other side of women men typically do not see (hints the title). By revealing the somewhat more embarrassing side of women, it shows the surrounding society that they not only take forever to get ready, but instead reveal the not so pretty side of the stereotypical women. Society during this time silences women and does not allow them to be true to themselves. Women are also held to a higher more proper standard than the men when it comes to society formalities. Swift integrates different literary ideas throughout this piece, he includes ideas such as: Feminine rhyme, prosody, imagery, a pastoral message in addition to ekphrasis. First off feminine rhyme as well as prosody is used throughout the whole piece. For an example in lines three and four there is a clear connection between the two rhyming words, it states: The goddess from her chamber issues, /Arrayed in lace, brocades and tissues (Swift,3 4). Clearly in this line Swift is describing that some lady issues need to be handled with tissues . This line is a great example of feminine rhyme as well as prosody, because women are often thought of as more sensitive than men and this continual rhyming pattern remains present throughout the whole poem. By taking on a female perspective from the beginning Swift is not only challenging the power dynamics is society, he is also giving voice to the females and showing the more sensitive side. Think about it this way, if a male would have written this piece it more than likely would not been emotional and sensitive because men are typically more insensitive than women. Secondly another great literary device Swift uses would be imagery. Imagery is throughout the remainder of the poem as it is describing the daily routine of a women, but the one part that is bolder than the others would have to be when he states: And first a dirty smock appeared/Beneath the armpits well besmeared (Swift, 11 12). This is a great example of imagery being used. By painting a picture in the reader s mind, the author is giving it a more real time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was a hot summer day; I was tired, hungry, sick of walking, and was wondering if this very long field trip would ever end. The men that fought on this battle field felt the same way during the summer of 1863. From reading Killer Angels and The Pickett s Charge Nobody Knows, I have a much better perception and understanding of what actually happened during the war. Before my readings, I thought there were the good guys who won and the bad guys who lost. I now understand on a deeper level what those men on both sides of the battle field were going through, and that they were men of God that were not only fighting for what they believed in but also for each other. Killer Angels is a particularly moving novel that is told from alternating points of view of several important men that played major roles during this war. Michael Sharra taught me what it would actually be like to be a soldier during the Civil War. Sharra provides many detailed maps of both army s positions, which gave me a better idea of where the men were posted, where they were headed, and which rout of attack the generals had their men on. The disagreement arose from rising stress between inhabitants of Great Britain s 13 North American colonies and the regal government, which symbolizes the British crown.
