Lansdowne Hercules Research Paper
Discovered in 1790 on Hadrian s Villa in Tivoli, Italy, Lansdowne Heracles is an iconic structure
that has withstood the test of time. It is the statue of Greek hero Hercules (known as Herakles by
the Greeks), and he is best known the Twelve Labours he carried out for King Euryntheus of Argos.
Ancient artists usually portrayed Hercules as wearing or holding associated with these
achievements, and this is why in The J. Paul Getty Museum the Lansdowne Heraclesis shown
holding a club and a lion s skin, which was his first labour for the King. Another feature prominent
in Lansdowne Heracles is that Hercules is always shown as being nude, and this is because
historically in Greece, male nudity was considered the highest form of beauty. This is the reason
most Greek statues are nude. Since the statue was discovered in Italy, questions arise as to whether
Lansdowne Heracles is Roman or Greek. Considering the facts that will be presented here, history
of the Greek and the fact that Hercules was a Greek hero, the sculpture must be Greek. While
archeologists are unanimous that the Statue of Hercules was sculptured in a Roman workshop in
the 2nd century A.D, they believe that it was inspired by another Greek statue now lost sculptured
by the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Statue of Hercules shows him carrying a club and a Nemean lion s skin, which are
associated with his first labor. The Nemean lion was a beast found on the hills of Nemea, which
were located in Greece. Subsequent feats that he undertook were all around Greece and therefore,
this is enough proof that the structure could be Greek rather than Roman. When Hercules died, he
was carried to Mount Olympus by Athena where he spent the rest of his eternity as a god (Scott,
2013). Most statues of Hercules are sculptured to portray him as a god, and since this mythology
originated from ancient Greece, it is only right to assume that the sculpture is

The Influence Of Music Education
The Influence of Music Education on Our Modernised Day
Music education is the study associated with the teaching and learning of music. It includes the
appreciation and sensitivity of music which helps in the development of the affective domain. The
involvement of music is a fundamental component to human s behaviour and culture. Today, many
country provide music education from preschool through postsecondary as the result of music
education have brought many benefits in a way such as the children s concentration, their logic and
problem solving skills, their communication, their emotional intelligence and their cultural
understanding. (Hermann Hudde) Music education had been playing an important role in building
the interpersonal and intrapersonal ability of oneself.
According to the research of Eva Brand and Ora Bar Gil, learning music carry side benefits to us,
one of these is the potential to enhanced interpersonal abilities through listening activities. Listening
is a core skill that may increase the interpersonal effectiveness of individuals and communication. It
is a learnable skill, although it is not widely taught in school, but it may have long term implications
for quality of life at an individual and community level. Besides that, listening ... Show more

Essay about Dr. Viktor Frankl s Man s Search for Meaning
Dr. Viktor Frankl s Man s Search for Meaning
He who has a why to live for can bear any how. The words of Nietzsche begin to explain Frankl s
tone throughout his book. Dr. Frankl uses his experiences in different Nazi concentration camps to
explain his discovery of logotherapy. This discovery takes us back to World War II and the extreme
suffering that took place in the Nazi concentration camps and outlines a detailed analysis of the
prisoners psyche. An experience we gain from the first hand memoirs of Dr. Frankl.
In the first half of this book, Dr. Frankl explains his theory of logotherapy through his concentration
camp experiences. He explains how his worldly possessions were striped from him literally in the
sense that his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Everything can be taken from man but ?the last of the human freedoms to choose one s attitude in
any given set of circumstances, to choose one s own way. In this, Frankl discusses how different
men chose different attitudes. Some remained descent, while others chose to become sadistic. He
explains that it is the condition or the atmosphere that forces man to make this decision but that the
condition or atmosphere does not make the decision. Each person has to decide what attitude to
adopt. As Frankl further explains there is also purpose in life which is almost barren of both
creation and enjoyment and which admits of but one possibility of high moral behavior: namely, in
man s attitude to his existence restricted by external forces.
Dr. Frankl also explains his theory on neurosis and how it is tied to the meaning of life. Frankl
differs from the ideas of Freud. Freud believed that the basis of neurosis is in unconscious
motives. Frankl believes that the basis for neurosis is man s search for his own meaning.
Furthermore he explains that ones own meaning is constantly changing; therefor, the means for
our suffering is constantly changing. Frankl explains, What matters, therefor, is not the meaning
of life in general, but rather the specific meaning of a person s life at a given moment. Frankl
describes we discover our specific meaning at a given moment. We can discover this meaning in life
in three different ways: (1) by doing a deed; (2) by

Sky Cathedral Presence
Survey of World Art
By
Vyacheslav Borts
The sculptress Louise Nevelson was a towering figure of American modernism. Born in 1899, she
came to prominence in the late 50s, gaining renown for monochromatic structures built out of
discarded wood. Critic Arthur C. Danto wrote, There could be no better word for how Nevelson
composed her work than bricolage a French term that means making do with what is at hand.
(Danto 2007) Her pieces evolved and expanded in size across the latter 20th century, moving from
smaller pieces to wall sized ones, and the plays of volume therein, between light and mass,
generated comparisons to numerous different movements. The following paper will examine these

The poignancy of this girl s untimely death and the instant of life the Grave Stele captures are both
magnified by the weight and constancy of the marble. By contrast, Nevelson achieves something
like suppleness in Sky Cathedral by her use of multiple layers and multiple new spaces that emerge
from different vantage points. From the Attic Greek to the Augustan age brings one to the Imperial
Procession, located on the North frieze of the Ara Pacis Augustae (Fig. 4). The first two sculptures
put into conversation with Sky Cathedral were mortuary, but the Imperial Procession is
celebratory. The first two are both smaller than four feet, but the Procession is life sized, so its
visual force is thus magnified. Finally, the individuals therein are not idealized types, in contrast
to earlier Greek modes of statuary they naturalistic depictions of many actual people in the line of
the Caesars. The Ara Pacis took four years to build, due to its desired scale and quality, and that
scale points to a salient evolution from the Greeks to the Romans. Riegl claimed this vector went
from what he call[ed] the haptic objectivism of the Greeks the delineation of the clarity of the
object through an appeal to and a stimulation of the tactile associations of the viewer to the optical
objectivism of Roman art, in which the need to set the figure up in space as radically

Metacognitive Self Regulation
Rationale
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether metacognitive and self regulation interventions
improve mathematical achievement in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
(ADHD). Although self regulation has an ambiguous meaning, recently it has been referred to as
the ability to manage one s behavior, so as to withstand impulses, maintain focus, and undertake
tasks, even if there are other more enticing alternatives available (Boyd et al., 2005, p. 3). Jarvela
and Jarvenoja, (2011), Zimmerman, (2008) stated that self regulation is essential to the learning
process and Wolters (2011) suggested that it can aid individuals, especially secondary school
students in developing more effective learning habits. Self regulation ... Show more content on

Due to this particular research on the development of self regulation in children many studies have
investigated the possible effects of metacognitive and self regulation strategies on academia. For
example, Labuhn et al., (2010) reported that students that received SRL assistance and guidance
were more likely to exhibit higher levels of self efficacy towards their academic ability resulting in
improved performance within the classroom. It was also concluded that self regulated learners
performed at a higher standard in comparison to students that did not receive SRL guidance
(Labuhn et al., 2010). Additionally Researchers, Graham Harris (2000) and Kistner et al. (2010)
found that SRL results in improved performance within a learning environment and can also limit
academic deficiency in many students. Self regulated learning strategies and interventions must be
aided by metacognitive reflection and feedback from teachers and at times from peers through
group tasks etc. (Dignath and BГјttner, 2008). Although there are countless studies investigating
metacognition and self regulation strategies, those that address individuals with behavioural
disorders are scarce, especially in regards to children. The reasoning for this is not only due to the
numerous challenges regarding the formulation of self regulatory abilities in children (Harris
Schmidt, 1997), but also due to the significant problems with attention, inhibition and impulsivity
that children with ADHD exhibit which makes formulation of self regulatory an incredibly difficult
task. This study therefore aims to provide further information and understanding on the

I have often been asked by architecture students and professionals visiting Chandigarh on how it
feels having grown up and educated from this city a single stroke, paradigm shifting undertaking by
the father of modernism himself. I reply with an inherently paradoxical answer. While on one hand
it has served as a major source of my exposure towards architecture and urbanism, alongside shaping
my perception and critique of urbanity, it has also engendered in me a curiosity towards the other ,
the traditional, emergent and incremental forms of urbanism prevalent all over the Indian sub
continent.

I took advantage of the opportunities provided during my undergraduate career to appraise the
present performance of the city against the conceived, modernist planning ideals. In an assignment
for the urban design class, I investigated the image of the city as perceived by the largely illiterate
rickshaw pullers, which navigate through it on a daily basis. It helped me to learn how the
vocabulary of nodes and landmarks synonymous with traditional towns, still continues to be used
by them. I illustrated this by drawing sector maps using Lynch s taxonomy of urban elements. For
a national competition to design a people s mall, I looked into the supply chains and networks
across the city, which transform sliver spaces within its formal fabric, appropriated by informal
vendors and hawkers. Each sector, devised as homogeneous, self sufficient neighborhood units, now
specializes in various resources leading to a differential development of the uniform grid layout.
In my final thesis project, I researched on Chandigarh s gridlocked, urbanized villages which
emerged as by products of the rational planning, juxtaposing contrasting forms of urbanism. A
British filmmaker once dubbed them as subaltern subversions of the grid, whereas a nuanced
investigation revealed how the existing form and pattern critiques the extended family
neighborhoods of the pre existing agrarian settlement. In my

A thirty second Canadian Lysol commercial that aired in 2010 opens to the sounds of happy

able bodied and skinny woman. She has a black mid level ponytail that stretches to her mid back
and a modest lavender colored shirt with short, ruffled sleeves. The woman faces the viewers left

Vice President of AFFLINK, Michael Wilson claims that if bacteriaare being constantly exposed to
disinfectant, it can mutate to become resistant to them as well as resistant to antibiotics. Wilson
works to make different supply chains more efficient, and realized that hospitals are over
disinfecting where they need to only be cleaning. It s important to note that cleaning and
disinfection are different processes. Cleaning typically involves soap or a detergent and removes
things that can be physically seen such as dirt, food from a plate, or stains. Disinfecting involves
chemically denaturing microbes, small bacteria, or germs. Hospitals are trying to integrate a system
that only disinfects certain high risk contamination areas of a hospital and simply cleaning others.
Disinfecting both effectively eliminates bacteria and mold (Reynolds) and causes the strengthening
and disinfectant and antibiotic resistance (Wilson). The Lysol advertisement glorifies the idea of
cleaning our environment down to the micro particle, without telling the dangers of creating
increasingly antibiotic resistant microbial organisms that can result from the liberal application of
disinfectant in ones home. However, according to the Journal of Food Production, the use of
sanitization wipes in the food industry increase(s) the risk of foreign body contamination... from
[the] wipes themselves, and that wipes were less effective than gel or foam sanitization options.
Disinfecting agents shouldn t be a go to as far as household cleaners go, but disinfecting wipes can
actually create cross contamination in one s home, all while the user believes they re creating a
cleaner environment (Bartleson 2131 2132). The idea of accidentally over cleaning doesn t apply
solely to disinfectants in the home, but other common sanitizing agents in public workplaces,
restrooms,

The Annexation Of Tibet
On September 21st 1987 the Dalai Lama gave a speech to the U.S. Congressional Human Rights

today is still an independent state under illegal occupation. In 1950 the People s Republic of China
occupied the territory of Tibet claiming it was its right. For this reason, there has been an ongoing

The Immature Huck Finn in Mark Twain s The Adventures of...
The Immature Huckleberry Finn
Maturity is not a fickle expression such as happiness or frustration, but rather an inherent quality
one gains over time, such as courage or integrity. Before maturity can be expressed, the one who
expresses it must have significant confidence in himself, since self confidence is the root of
maturity. Being flexible and formulating one s own opinions or ideas are aspects of maturity, but
neither is possible without self confidence. The greatest aspect of maturity is the ability to make
decisions which society does not agree with. Whether or not one follows through with these ideas is
not important. What is important is the ability to make the decision. These decisions represent the

Huck doesn t show his first signs of maturing until he is free from authority.
Huck hides out on Jackson s Island and for the first time in a while has no authoritative figure
controlling him. Even when he discovers Jim, the Widow s slave, Huck doesn t consider himself
outranked. Huck has been taught that a runaway slave is an evil thing. Being able to make his
own decision about the matter, however, Huck decides to go against society. People would call
me a low down Abolitionist and despise me for keeping mum but that don t make no difference. I
ain t a going to tell (43). This is Huck s first sign of maturity as we find that he is able to make his
own decisions.
Huck s maturity grows with the same issue later on. When approaching Cairo, the point where
Jim can become free, Huck decides that he has done something terribly wrong by not turning Jim
in and decides he is going into town to tell on him. However, in a split second, while encountering
some slave hunters, Huck decides against it and continues to protect Jim. This episode is
particularly significant because even though Huck was feeling bad and low, because [he] knowed
very well [he] had done wrong (91) he still made a conscious decision to do what he felt was right
rather than what society thought was right.

Similarities Between Itunes And Itunes
In early 1800 s, Thomas Alva Edison invented a method of recording and playing back sound with a
simple apparatus. Thus began the evolution of music industry. From gramophones to tapes to
compact discs, music industry has undergone drastic transformations with improvised technologies
and innovations.
Fifteen years ago (June 1,1999), the style of listening and sharing music has been completely
revolutionized by two teenagers, Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker. They created an online platform
for swapping music and named it NAPSTER. Thus began the era of online music. Though Napster
was initially a great success, their service was considered to be illegal and legal battles eventually
ruined Napster. However, online music industry continued to stay in light with companies like
apple providing legal ways to purchase and download music online.

What will it cost to shorten the project by as many weeks as possible?
The project can be shortened by 6 weeks maximum.
Based on the crash time for 6 activities (A3 A4 A7and B2 B5 B6), we can come up with the new
numbers of weeks that each activity needs.
According to the critical path we already found, we could see that B9 is an important activity.
Once it was changed, B6 changed. So we also need
to find how A5 B3 B8 changed.
The crash of B5, B6 leaded to the change of A4 and A5 (17,21), so the crash of A3 is invalid; The
crash of B2 leaded to the change of C5, so B8 became (18,22); B2 changed B3 to (11.21). Then the
time of B9 changed to (22,30). Since the earliest time for B9 is 22 anyway, and we crashed
B5, B6 for one week each to make it s final time 21, we could cancel
B6 s crash for its higher cost.
Then we finally crash A7 for 2 weeks. so the final time for A8 was 46 followed by calculating.
The total cost to shorten the project is

Declaration Of Rights Of Man And Citizen
Even though the Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen never received the chance to be
implemented, it reflects the ___ of change that had occurred within the first five years of the
French Revolution; through the ___ we are able to understand the mindset of the men from the
National Convention ( 221). Cahier of the Parish of St. Germain d Airan was written in
accordance to the authority of King Louis XVI; members of the community gathered to create the
doctrine and to show reciprocal love through contributions to the state ( 55). Members of the

heart solely. The Declaration of Right of Man and Citizen was a document organized by an assembly

Why Do You Want To Participate In The Ironbound Initiative...
I am currently a member and the treasurer for the Ironbound Initiative. I am also involved with
the Patient Partnership program as a First Year representative and am the director for the Mini
Med Program at NJMS. In addition, I am a member of the All E.A.R.S Program at NJMS and I

2.Why do you want to participate in this global health trip? What are your goals, both personally
and for the two week trip as well as after the trip?
Through my participation in the Ironbound Initiative I have come to recognize the significant
health disparities and lack of access to care in the Portuguese and Brazilian communities in New

What do you think will be your greatest challenge?
On this trip, I anticipate communicating with people of a different culture may be a challenge.
Although I do not speak Brazilian Portuguese, I know that we will have a bilingual interpreter
with us as well as NJMS students who speak both languages and thus, I know that the language
barrier will not be a big challenge. More than the language, I want to be contentious on this trip
regarding acknowledging my privileges and that I need to understand the Brazilian approach to
medicine in the context of their culture as well as the resources available to them. Furthermore, I
understand that I have limited knowledge and skills as a first year medical student and so can only
provide basic medical services at this time. Therefore, I am most apprehensive about effectively
understanding and communicating with the Brazilian community and recognizing that currently I
am only able to provide a limited amount of aid to these communities.
4.How do you plan on financially supporting this endeavor? (Are you willing to fundraise as a
team, as well as apply to the available scholarships?)
I fully intend to apply to any available scholarships in order to fund this trip. I am also looking
forward to working with other students going on this trip in order to organize fundraisers such as
bake sales and raffles. I also intend to start a GoFundMe page as well as seek out local businesses

There are several hundred of these compounds, but not all occur in any one sample. Chemicals that
occur in TPH include hexane, benzene, toluene, xylenes, naphthalene, and fluorine, etc. The
compounds in different TPH fractions affect the body in different ways. Some of the TPH
compounds, particularly the smaller compounds such as benzene, toluene, and xylene (which are
present in gasoline), can affect the human central nervous system. If exposures are high enough,
death can occur. Breathing toluene at concentrations greater than 100 ppm for more than several
hours can cause fatigue, headache, nausea, and drowsiness. When exposure is stopped, the
symptoms will go away. However, if someone is exposed for a long time, permanent damage to the
central nervous system can occur. One TPH compound (n hexane) can affect the central nervous
system in a different way, causing a nerve disorder called peripheral neuropathy characterized by
numbness in the feet and legs and, in severe cases, paralysis. Swallowing some petroleum products
such as gasoline and kerosene causes irritation of the throat and stomach, central nervous system

Sea Otters Essay
Sea Otters that live in the kelp forest habitat, and Prairie dogs that live in the plains habitats are
considered keystones species due to the fact that without both of them the ecosystem would
crumble and not be able to survive without each animal.
Sea otters primary diet consists of animal like sea urchins, and sea urchins primary diet are kelp
forests. The sea otter is considered to be a keystone species because it feeds off of sea urchins, and
help preserve the kelp forests. If the sea otter were removed from this ecosystem, it would be
disastrous due to the fact that the sea urchin population would sky rocket because they have no
predators like the sea otter. The sea urchin would then proceed to eat a majority of the kelp forest,
which is a habitat for many animals living in this ecosystem. With the deforestation of the kelp
forests, the sea urchin wouldn t have anything to eat, and they would slowly die off as well. The sea

They live primarily in northern and northwestern North America. The largest way they interact
with species directly is that they are pretty centered in the food chain, meaning that they are able
to eat a lot of animals below them, and a lot of animals are able to eat them. The holes that they
also burrow make habitats for many other animals other than themselves. Prairie dogs also aerate
and fertilize soil, and improve water quality, which allows for healthier, and more grass to grow.
They are considered a keystone species due to the effects that they have on not only the other
animals in the ecosystem, but also the way they affect other plants. Without the prairie dog, the
group of animals that eat them would lose a large source of their diet, and the animals that get
eaten by the prairie dog would start to overpopulate. Animals would lose home that the prairie dogs
dig, and the soil would be as aerated and filled with nutrients, ultimately collapsing the

Millford plantation is a historic place located on SC 261, west of Pinewood, SC. Built in 1839
1841, Millford Plantation is considered by many to be the finest example of Greek revival
residential architecture in America. The house is located in such a remote section of rural SC that
it comes to a surprise to first time visitors, who must drive over miles of dirt roads and through
thick forests to reach the house. The house has massive columns, sixteen foot windows, a domed
rotunda enclosing a spectacular staircase. All these impressive features are inherent in Greek Rival

Jaws Movie Review Essay
I was 13 years old. I was glued to my seat from start to finish. I screamed, I jumped, I held my
breath, and much more. In my 13 years old body, there were so many experiences emotions. Jaws
was probably the first film where I completely forgot everything around me. If this movie scares
you to the point where you cannot go back to the water, then Spielberg has done a job well done.
First thing, Jaws is not only about a shark. It is a film that flipped the standards for what we
expect when we watch horror films. It is important to look at the opening titles of any film
because the openings give you an idea of what you ll see in the movie. The simplicity is what
makes Jaws such a great film. Spielberg is showing us how people react, and the emotional
response we have as an audience comes because we have empathy for the characters feelings.
It is important to understand the characters to understand the film. Spielberg spend over half of the
movie developing characters and conflict. At it makes the audience even more attached to the
character. The three main characters are Brody (Roy Scheider), the police chief, who came to the
island from new york. He is much a family man and his determination to protect his family is what
drives him to kill the beast aka jaws. There s Quint (Robert Shaw), much more of a flawed

The Disappearance Of Childhood Analysis
In the book, The Disappearance of Childhood, Postman s overall claim is that childhood is
disappearing because children are able to get access to information about adult secrets.
I agree with Postman s main argument; however, I disagree with some of his claims that he used to
support the main argument.
In chapter 1, Postman claimed that children who are participating in games such as Little League
baseball and Pee Wee football are playing because they are pursuing reputation, not because they
wanted to do something fun, or because they were pursuing pleasure. I disagree with Postman s
claim since I believe in the exact opposite. I believe that for a child to play sports in their own time,
they must first enjoy that sport. If a child doesn t like playing ... Show more content on

This is true for all sports. For an example, I m not an athletic person, and I dislike all sports.
Since I don t find pleasure in playing sports, I don t want to do anything related to it, which
includes joining any sport organizations. I had a classmate who loved baseball. He would have
found great pleasure in joining Little League baseball because he loved the sport. I believe that the
reputation the child gets from playing the sport is just something that is included.
Postman claims that with adultified child , children who think and act similar to adults, and
childfied adult , where adults think and act similar to children, children s and adults beliefs and
characteristics are merging into one. This represents the disappearance of the generation gap, where
everyone is in the same generation. In the beginning, I disagreed with his claim. I thought that the
generation gap is still there. Children are growing up with technology. In this generation, a child as

Points of View Commentary
Points of View Commentary
Points of View , written by Lucinda Roy, is a poem that features different points of view (as the
title suggests) on the subject of water: those of women collecting water in, what can be assumed
to be, an African country and those of a person living in a modernised (possibly a Western )
country. Furthermore, Roy seems to be critical of the aforementioned Western lifestyle and this
poem presents an underlying moral that everybody should be grateful for what they have,
regardless of how basic those things are. Roy s poem is comprised of two main stanzas; the first of
which details the women s daily struggle to provide water for their families. The term scoop up
evokes an image of a woman scooping up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is interesting how some of the narrator s Western like education seeps through into the stanza;
now, in contrast to the first stanza, there are terms such as the children jumping not through
water , but from element to element (air to water) and imagery of diamond drops shooting along
trajectories too long for me to measure , as opposed to the first stanza s fairly basic lexical
choice. Overall, this poem displays two different points of view surrounding water those of an
assumed Western woman and African woman (I feel that it is safe to assume that the narrator is
a woman, since there is a lot of references to women in the first stanza thus setting the tone for the
rest of the poem). As we can see, the two views are vastly different but it is as though the
narrator questions her own views of water and seeks answers from the people who value water
the most; something that would be a somewhat humbling experience, I m sure. Finally, I would
say that this poem is very relevant to today many people living in a Western country do seem to
take water for granted, and this poem seems very critical of that, as there are people who have to
struggle to obtain what is considered one of life s most basic

Auteur Theory Continues to be an Important Part of Filmmaking
The auteur theory is an idea or principle, which states that the film is a reflection of a director s
creative personal vision, as if to say the he or she is the primary author (which in French, means
auteur ). This theory first came to be in 1954, by a French film director named Francois Truffaut.
The auteur theory s birth was through the French New Wave, which was a group of new French
filmmakers during the 1950 s and 1960 s. In the beginning, the theory received positive and
negative responses. And to this day, it will create a heated debate. Many have questioned the
theory, because there are usually multiple people involved in the development of a film. Ultimately,

One was fiction and the other non fiction, but they both was a piece of art displayed by Spike Lee.
When we view these two films from an auteur theory point of view, we are able to capture Spike
Lee s voice. One of the biggest traits you will witness in Spike Lee s films is the ability to zoom
in on a character and talk to the viewer. In Do the Right Thing and Malcolm X, Spike Lee would
focus on a particular character, as if to zone out everyone else within the film. In doing so, he
was able to get his point across because the viewer had no choice but to take in what was being
said and the image remained in the back of our minds. I know for a fact that more than 20 years
later, the close up of those films are still present in mind. This was a unique, personal, and creative
vision of Spike Lee.
At the same time, Spike Lee had a way of focusing on specific areas or backgrounds within the
film. A great example is a scene in Do the Right Thing, where Spike Lee, himself was walking
down the sidewalk, delivering a pizza. The point of him delivering the pizza didn t really mean
much. What stood out about the scene is when Spike Lee left the scene and the camera remained.
Those seconds of footage displayed a sidewalk with an image, written by kids with chalk. Another
great display of Spike Lee s vision is how he could change scenes in the middle of conversation. A
character could be talking to someone, turn away from the person, look in the other direction, and

The Happiness Advantage
Everyone s ideal world contains no problems. The dream life is full of happiness because you
have the perfect job, an abundance of money to afford the best of things, and a magic wand to
wave and solve any issue that comes your way. This would be considered in today s society a
person who is very successful, and most of all, happy. This may not always be true. In Shawn
Achor s book, The HappinessAdvantage, he describes happiness as a feeling that everyone should
have regardless of the situation they are in or the problems they are dealing with. He discusses
that happiness is the precursor to success, and not to be confused with the opposing view. The 3
main theories that Achor believes will give the greatest happiness advantage is The Zorro Circle,
The Fulcrum and the Lever, and the Social Investment. Achor suggests that happiness comes
before success because happiness will give you a better outlook, and success may not always
intend that happiness is to follow. Our most positive emotions include hope, love, pride and joy.
Each of these emotions are different according to the person experiencing them. All of them relate
to happiness, which can help us to be in a better mood in the future as well as in the present
(Achor, p.40). Happiness should be our main focus in everything we do. When we set up a smarter
and more motivated mindset, we then start to focus on our own happiness and allow success to
grow from that feeling. Happiness should be the first thing we think about

Summary Of Marxist Reading Of Octavia Butler s Dawn
Marxist Reading of Octavia Butler s Dawn, Book One of the Xenogenesis Trilogy Butler s novel is
very complex and nuanced, with multiple themes and layers of meaning throughout the text. A
particularly overarching theme is that of contradictions and contrasts. One way this manifests is as
the ideological conflict between the the Oankali (the alien society in the story) human cultures, the
former being quite similar to how Karl Marxenvisioned the ideal society, (though neither he nor his
ideology is ever actually mentioned in the story).
Marxism is often and rightly criticised for being impossible to truly implement in human society
it always devolves into an oppressive regime. However, for the Oankali, this system that is, a
classless society with no government and no oppression appears to work very well. Because of
this, on the surface, Butler s story seems to simply reinforce Marxist ideals, but, as we will see, it
actually both reinforces and undermines them. Butler skillfully shows both the pros and cons of
Marxism and lets the reader make up his or her own mind.
While a Marxist like system works very well for the aliens, they themselves do not think this (or
any other system, for that matter) will work for the humans as they are. They assert that, [human]
bodies are fatally flawed and handicapped because [they] have a mismatched pair of genetic
characteristics which, without help, will destroy them (Part 1, ch. 5). What they mean is that, due

If children don t have sex, they don t need protection. If they do have sex, pregnancy and sexually
transmitted diseases shouldn t be a price they have to pay for the attitudes of adults who don t
approve. Unfortunately, teenagers can and do have sex without parental approval. The truth
becomes apparent when a teen becomes a parent.
Parents try to be aware of what their children are doing; however, it is a misconception to think
that sexual activity can be controlled at all times. Our society, not biology, declares that teens are
not supposed to engage in sex. Teenagers are designed by nature to have sex, are possessed of all
the necessary equipment to do so, and have the mental capabilities to hide such behavior from
adults. The sex drive is not caused by teachers, contraceptives, or the media. Although well meant,
the notion that parental warnings can make sex less appealing is arrogant and foolish. Teenagers
are having sex without permission, and the goal must be to minimize the damage, not look for
someone to blame. As adults struggle with controlling the actions of their children, they should
protect them at the same time. If children are forbidden to have sex, it is unlikely that they will
discuss sexual problems with the very person who told them it is not permissible. There must be

Parent s Influence and Role in Teenagers Prevalence to Underage Drinking and Alcoholism
Alcohol (beverages): beverages which contain ethanol substance, this substance cause a person
become drunk (e.g. beer, whiskey). (W. Merriam Corporation, 2011)
Definition of alcoholism
According to mayo clinic, alcoholism is an inability to control the desire to consume alcoholic
beverages. The desire will always lead to serious condition, because the person who drinks alcohol
does not know if he/she drinks too much. (Mayoclinic, 2012)
Additionally, Alcoholic Anonymous UK states that alcoholism is a combination of physical
impulse and a mental obsession which lead to enormous craving for alcoholic beverages.

solution for their problems, but in this phase it should be noted that an alcoholic family could be
reorganized and reintergrated even after they were separated. This phase is usually happens after
phase 1 (reactive), alternative phase will revolve in (polarization, separation, and family
reorganization). o Family unity phase: family unity phase will have 2 alternatives ( dry drunk or
family growth), although they will experience a period of sobriety (which is the time when an

there are many trouble entailing alcoholism, the situation of a former drunk family might be the

Bishop Orders His Tomb at Saint Praxed s Church and The Love Song of Alfred J. Prufrock
The span of time from the Victorian age of Literature to the Modernism of the 20th century wrought
many changes in poetry style and literary thinking. While both eras contained elements of self
scrutiny, the various forms and reasoning behind such thinking were vastly different. The Victorian
age, with it s new industrialization of society, brought to poetry and literature the fictional
character, seeing the world from another s eyes. It was also a time in which Victorian authors and
intellectuals found a way to reassert religious ideas (Longman, p. 1790). Society was questioning
the ideals of religion, yet people wanted to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Do I live, am I dead? (13) reveals the uncertainty of the bishops thoughts as he contemplates death,
wondering if others see that he deserves such a fine tomb. In Eliot s poem, Prufrock poses his own
questioning, Do I dare? (38) and Do I dare/ disturb the universe? (45 46) which reflects his own
personal conflict as he struggles to decide on whether he should take action, any action in his own
life.
Although these monologues contain the same elements of self questioning, they are vastly
different, both in style and in tone. The bishop of Browning s poem sees himself as a great man,
How I earned the prize! (33). He orders this stately tomb of lapis (102) and antique black basalt
(53 54), a tomb so rich such as a king or queen might be deserving of. This gives us a clear picture
that he thinks highly of himself, and he wants others to see the same, even after he is dead, the
tomb much like a shrine of great importance.
In contrast, Alfred J. Prufrock of Eliot s poem, feels no such greatness in himself. He is filled with
vast uncertainty so that every small decision is wrought with conflict, and as such, he never does
anything. I have measured out my life with coffee spoons (51) shows us that his life was
characterized by small measures, having done no great work. I am no prophet (84) and Am an
attendant lord, one that will do (112) characterizes his view of himself,

  • 2. Lansdowne Hercules Research Paper Discovered in 1790 on Hadrian s Villa in Tivoli, Italy, Lansdowne Heracles is an iconic structure that has withstood the test of time. It is the statue of Greek hero Hercules (known as Herakles by the Greeks), and he is best known the Twelve Labours he carried out for King Euryntheus of Argos. Ancient artists usually portrayed Hercules as wearing or holding associated with these achievements, and this is why in The J. Paul Getty Museum the Lansdowne Heraclesis shown holding a club and a lion s skin, which was his first labour for the King. Another feature prominent in Lansdowne Heracles is that Hercules is always shown as being nude, and this is because historically in Greece, male nudity was considered the highest form of beauty. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Statue of Hercules shows him carrying a club and a Nemean lion s skin, which are associated with his first labor. The Nemean lion was a beast found on the hills of Nemea, which were located in Greece. Subsequent feats that he undertook were all around Greece and therefore, this is enough proof that the structure could be Greek rather than Roman. When Hercules died, he was carried to Mount Olympus by Athena where he spent the rest of his eternity as a god (Scott, 2013). Most statues of Hercules are sculptured to portray him as a god, and since this mythology originated from ancient Greece, it is only right to assume that the sculpture is ... He explains that it is the condition or the atmosphere that forces man to make this decision but that the condition or atmosphere does not make the decision. Each person has to decide what attitude to adopt. As Frankl further explains there is also purpose in life which is almost barren of both creation and enjoyment and which admits of but one possibility of high moral behavior: namely, in man s attitude to his existence restricted by external forces. Dr. Frankl also explains his theory on neurosis and how it is tied to the meaning of life. Frankl differs from the ideas of Freud. Freud believed that the basis of neurosis is in unconscious motives. Frankl believes that the basis for neurosis is man s search for his own meaning. Frankl explains, What matters, therefor, is not the meaning of life in general, but rather the specific meaning of a person s life at a given moment. From the Attic Greek to the Augustan age brings one to the Imperial Procession, located on the North frieze of the Ara Pacis Augustae (Fig. 4). The first two sculptures put into conversation with Sky Cathedral were mortuary, but the Imperial Procession is celebratory. • 8. Metacognitive Self Regulation Rationale The purpose of this study is to investigate whether metacognitive and self regulation interventions improve mathematical achievement in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Although self regulation has an ambiguous meaning, recently it has been referred to as the ability to manage one s behavior, so as to withstand impulses, maintain focus, and undertake tasks, even if there are other more enticing alternatives available (Boyd et al., 2005, p. 3). Jarvela and Jarvenoja, (2011), Zimmerman, (2008) stated that self regulation is essential to the learning process and Wolters (2011) suggested that it can aid individuals, especially secondary school students in developing more effective learning habits. Self regulation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to this particular research on the development of self regulation in children many studies have investigated the possible effects of metacognitive and self regulation strategies on academia. For example, Labuhn et al., (2010) reported that students that received SRL assistance and guidance were more likely to exhibit higher levels of self efficacy towards their academic ability resulting in improved performance within the classroom. It was also concluded that self regulated learners performed at a higher standard in comparison to students that did not receive SRL guidance (Labuhn et al., 2010). Additionally Researchers, Graham Harris (2000) and Kistner et al. (2010) found that SRL results in improved performance within a learning environment and can also limit academic deficiency in many students. Self regulated learning strategies and interventions must be aided by metacognitive reflection and feedback from teachers and at times from peers through group tasks etc. (Dignath and BГјttner, 2008). Although there are countless studies investigating metacognition and self regulation strategies, those that address individuals with behavioural disorders are scarce, especially in regards to children. The reasoning for this is not only due to the numerous challenges regarding the formulation of self regulatory abilities in children (Harris Schmidt, 1997), but also due to the significant problems with attention, inhibition and impulsivity that children with ADHD exhibit which makes formulation of self regulatory an incredibly difficult task. This study therefore aims to provide further information and understanding on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I took advantage of the opportunities provided during my undergraduate career to appraise the present performance of the city against the conceived, modernist planning ideals. In an assignment for the urban design class, I investigated the image of the city as perceived by the largely illiterate rickshaw pullers, which navigate through it on a daily basis. It helped me to learn how the vocabulary of nodes and landmarks synonymous with traditional towns, still continues to be used by them. I illustrated this by drawing sector maps using Lynch s taxonomy of urban elements. For a national competition to design a people s mall, I looked into the supply chains and networks across the city, which transform sliver spaces within its formal fabric, appropriated by informal vendors and hawkers. Each sector, devised as homogeneous, self sufficient neighborhood units, now specializes in various resources leading to a differential development of the uniform grid layout. In my final thesis project, I researched on Chandigarh s gridlocked, urbanized villages which emerged as by products of the rational planning, juxtaposing contrasting forms of urbanism. A British filmmaker once dubbed them as subaltern subversions of the grid, whereas a nuanced investigation revealed how the existing form and pattern critiques the extended family neighborhoods of the pre existing agrarian settlement. Vice President of AFFLINK, Michael Wilson claims that if bacteriaare being constantly exposed to disinfectant, it can mutate to become resistant to them as well as resistant to antibiotics. Wilson works to make different supply chains more efficient, and realized that hospitals are over disinfecting where they need to only be cleaning. It s important to note that cleaning and disinfection are different processes. Cleaning typically involves soap or a detergent and removes things that can be physically seen such as dirt, food from a plate, or stains. Disinfecting involves chemically denaturing microbes, small bacteria, or germs. Hospitals are trying to integrate a system that only disinfects certain high risk contamination areas of a hospital and simply cleaning others. Disinfecting both effectively eliminates bacteria and mold (Reynolds) and causes the strengthening and disinfectant and antibiotic resistance (Wilson). The Lysol advertisement glorifies the idea of cleaning our environment down to the micro particle, without telling the dangers of creating increasingly antibiotic resistant microbial organisms that can result from the liberal application of disinfectant in ones home. Some of the TPH compounds, particularly the smaller compounds such as benzene, toluene, and xylene (which are present in gasoline), can affect the human central nervous system. If exposures are high enough, death can occur. Breathing toluene at concentrations greater than 100 ppm for more than several hours can cause fatigue, headache, nausea, and drowsiness. Sea Otters Essay Sea Otters that live in the kelp forest habitat, and Prairie dogs that live in the plains habitats are considered keystones species due to the fact that without both of them the ecosystem would crumble and not be able to survive without each animal. Sea otters primary diet consists of animal like sea urchins, and sea urchins primary diet are kelp forests. The sea otter is considered to be a keystone species because it feeds off of sea urchins, and help preserve the kelp forests. If the sea otter were removed from this ecosystem, it would be disastrous due to the fact that the sea urchin population would sky rocket because they have no predators like the sea otter. The sea urchin would then proceed to eat a majority of the kelp forest, which is a habitat for many animals living in this ecosystem. In my 13 years old body, there were so many experiences emotions. Jaws was probably the first film where I completely forgot everything around me. If this movie scares you to the point where you cannot go back to the water, then Spielberg has done a job well done. First thing, Jaws is not only about a shark. It is a film that flipped the standards for what we expect when we watch horror films. It is important to look at the opening titles of any film because the openings give you an idea of what you ll see in the movie. The simplicity is what makes Jaws such a great film. Spielberg is showing us how people react, and the emotional response we have as an audience comes because we have empathy for the characters feelings. In chapter 1, Postman claimed that children who are participating in games such as Little League baseball and Pee Wee football are playing because they are pursuing reputation, not because they wanted to do something fun, or because they were pursuing pleasure. Points of View Commentary Points of View Commentary Points of View , written by Lucinda Roy, is a poem that features different points of view (as the title suggests) on the subject of water: those of women collecting water in, what can be assumed to be, an African country and those of a person living in a modernised (possibly a Western ) country. Furthermore, Roy seems to be critical of the aforementioned Western lifestyle and this poem presents an underlying moral that everybody should be grateful for what they have, regardless of how basic those things are. Roy s poem is comprised of two main stanzas; the first of which details the women s daily struggle to provide water for their families. The term scoop up evokes an image of a woman scooping up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is interesting how some of the narrator s Western like education seeps through into the stanza; now, in contrast to the first stanza, there are terms such as the children jumping not through water , but from element to element (air to water) and imagery of diamond drops shooting along trajectories too long for me to measure , as opposed to the first stanza s fairly basic lexical choice. Overall, this poem displays two different points of view surrounding water those of an assumed Western woman and African woman (I feel that it is safe to assume that the narrator is a woman, since there is a lot of references to women in the first stanza thus setting the tone for the rest of the poem). As we can see, the two views are vastly different but it is as though the narrator questions her own views of water and seeks answers from the people who value water the most; something that would be a somewhat humbling experience, I m sure. Finally, I would say that this poem is very relevant to today many people living in a Western country do seem to take water for granted, and this poem seems very critical of that, as there are people who have to struggle to obtain what is considered one of life s most basic ... This theory first came to be in 1954, by a French film director named Francois Truffaut. The auteur theory s birth was through the French New Wave, which was a group of new French filmmakers during the 1950 s and 1960 s. One was fiction and the other non fiction, but they both was a piece of art displayed by Spike Lee. When we view these two films from an auteur theory point of view, we are able to capture Spike Lee s voice. One of the biggest traits you will witness in Spike Lee s films is the ability to zoom in on a character and talk to the viewer. In Do the Right Thing and Malcolm X, Spike Lee would focus on a particular character, as if to zone out everyone else within the film. In doing so, he was able to get his point across because the viewer had no choice but to take in what was being said and the image remained in the back of our minds. I know for a fact that more than 20 years later, the close up of those films are still present in mind. This was a unique, personal, and creative vision of Spike Lee. At the same time, Spike Lee had a way of focusing on specific areas or backgrounds within the film. A great example is a scene in Do the Right Thing, where Spike Lee, himself was walking down the sidewalk, delivering a pizza. The point of him delivering the pizza didn t really mean much. What stood out about the scene is when Spike Lee left the scene and the camera remained. Those seconds of footage displayed a sidewalk with an image, written by kids with chalk. Another great display of Spike Lee s vision is how he could change scenes in the middle of conversation. The dream life is full of happiness because you have the perfect job, an abundance of money to afford the best of things, and a magic wand to wave and solve any issue that comes your way. This would be considered in today s society a person who is very successful, and most of all, happy. This may not always be true. In Shawn Achor s book, The HappinessAdvantage, he describes happiness as a feeling that everyone should have regardless of the situation they are in or the problems they are dealing with. He discusses that happiness is the precursor to success, and not to be confused with the opposing view. The 3 main theories that Achor believes will give the greatest happiness advantage is The Zorro Circle, The Fulcrum and the Lever, and the Social Investment. Achor suggests that happiness comes before success because happiness will give you a better outlook, and success may not always intend that happiness is to follow. Our most positive emotions include hope, love, pride and joy. Each of these emotions are different according to the person experiencing them. All of them relate to happiness, which can help us to be in a better mood in the future as well as in the present (Achor, p.40). Happiness should be our main focus in everything we do. Summary Of Marxist Reading Of Octavia Butler s Dawn Marxist Reading of Octavia Butler s Dawn, Book One of the Xenogenesis Trilogy Butler s novel is very complex and nuanced, with multiple themes and layers of meaning throughout the text. A particularly overarching theme is that of contradictions and contrasts. One way this manifests is as the ideological conflict between the the Oankali (the alien society in the story) human cultures, the former being quite similar to how Karl Marxenvisioned the ideal society, (though neither he nor his ideology is ever actually mentioned in the story). Marxism is often and rightly criticised for being impossible to truly implement in human society it always devolves into an oppressive regime. However, for the Oankali, this system that is, a classless society with no government and no oppression appears to work very well. Because of this, on the surface, Butler s story seems to simply reinforce Marxist ideals, but, as we will see, it actually both reinforces and undermines them. Butler skillfully shows both the pros and cons of Marxism and lets the reader make up his or her own mind. While a Marxist like system works very well for the aliens, they themselves do not think this (or any other system, for that matter) will work for the humans as they are. Parents try to be aware of what their children are doing; however, it is a misconception to think that sexual activity can be controlled at all times.
