The Roaring Twenties Summary
The Roaring Twenties written by Joshua Zeitz exemplifies the 1920s as a time full of grace, but
not without its hardships. The author states that there was an era of liberation for women, and
many contemporary ideas were introduced. New ideals were being popularized and a different
generation was evolving, even with the disapproval of others. Although it was a glitzy and
glamorous time, the economy was being strained and eventually reached a breaking point. Even
though there was a depression in the beginning and the end of the 1920s, this period was met with
beauty, allure, and fascination.
The rise of female emancipation created a modern look for women. Flappers contributed to the
social aspect of the new democracy. Described as northern, urban, young, and single, these women
loved the nightlife. These girls enjoyed jazz clubs or vaudeville shows. A flapper was generally
characterized by short hair, lots of makeup, and short, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Along with these state of the art activities came a huge increase in citizens living in cities. For the
first time in America s history, more people were living in cities than on farms and villages.
Inventions like radio, car, and film in the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries prospered in
the twenties. People had money to spend, and they spent it. Zeitz writes that ...theaters were selling
5 million tickets a week, a sum equal to roughly half the U.S. population! Like film, radio sales
boomed. The annual sales for radios were $852 million, and twelve million households owned them.
Even teenagers were embracing the freedom of the twenties. According to an interview done by
Robert and Helen Lynd, the top reasons for disagreement between high schoolers and their parents
was the number of times they could go out during the school week, the hour they came home, and
their allotted spending

Agent Of Socialisation Essay
Agents of Socialisation : The Mass Media
In the present day, the media is incorporated into our daily lives. Every day, through newspapers,
radio, television, email, the internet and social media, are we sucked into an electronic world,
which changes many of our beliefs and values about how we live our lives. It plays such a large
role in almost every person s life compared to 50 years ago, when the internet did not exist. It
effects things such as our political views, tastes in music, views of men, women, gay and
coloured people. Media is very powerful in that it is accessible by almost every human being in
the world. Over the decades, there has been a significant increase in the amount of technological
advancements, especially in the way of mobile devices and computers. The mass media, being an
agent of socialisation, means that it has a significant influence on our lives, primarily in the way we
interact with each other and learn social and cultural behaviours from others.
Media is most powerful when the individual using the agent is young, and when it can educate,
inform and change people s opinions. The effectiveness can be very positive or very negative,
for example, it can educate people of a social disaster and can bring people together. With things
such as Facebook, where people can hide behind a computer screen and say nasty things to
people, or pretend to be people they aren t, it emits a negative vibe. However, Facebook can be
used in an effective way, to

Evaluate The Accuracy Of Parachute Results
Overall, I think the experiment went well, but the results collected at the end were invalid and
reasonably inaccurate, however, on the other hand, errors and mistakes occurred during the
investigation. The dropping time of the parachute was not accurate because it went off course,
so it is not reliable as we could not control the factors which affected the parachute. This is
because the parachute had more air resistance, but the weight force was less and took way too
much time to reach the ground. For example; the weather and weight affected the parachute s
drop time and we could ve tested the parachute from different heights to get more accurate and
valid results. My results prove my prediction correct that large surface area parachutes will take
more time to land as more air particles hit with the parachute. This explains that the parachute
will take more time to reach the ground safely. My team tried to make the surface area of the
parachute as large as possible, so there would be more air resistance because of the more the air
resistance, the slower it will descend. My team s parachutes were best at landing, but it went off
course because the object was not heavy enough, so air resistance force... Show more content on

On the other hand, the prediction was correct that the larger the surface area of the parachute, the
longer it will take to reach the ground safely because the purpose of the parachutes is to land

because it took the greater amount of time to land. However, the parachute went off course because
more air particles hit on the parachute, but the weight force was less. This is because unbalanced
forces acted on it. Overall, this investigation worked well because my team s parachute took the

Automatic Transmission Essay
ABSTRACT
The transmission in a car which works automatically depending on the vehicle speed and engine
speed is called as automatic transmission while as a manual transmission is the one there is a
manual clutch pedal used while changing gears that allow the driver to change the gears as per
driving needs. In a country like India, automatic transmission gives only a driving pleasure to the
driver in heavy traffic as there is no need of changing gears because of the fact that it lacks a
clutch paddle system which gives complete rest to one leg of the driver. Manual transmission fails
to provide such an added benefit to drivers. But in developing countries, the idea of an automatic
transmission is not wise and applicable to all due to the economic ... Show more content on

For the selection of reverse mode , the driver must come to a complete stop, depress the shift lock
button and select reverse. Severe damage may be caused to the transmission if the car is not made
to come to a complete stop. Most of the modern day automatic transmissions have a safety
mechanism in place, which prevents putting the car in reverse when the vehicle is moving forward.
3.Neutral / No gear (N)
This mode is almost same as in manual cars where it allows the vehicle to coast freely under its
own weight and gain momentum without the motive force from the engine. 4.Drive (D)
This mode of the transmission is to engage the full range of available gear which allows the
vehicle to move forward and accelerate through the range of gears. In this mode the gear changes
automatically as the cars gains speed. The number of gear ratios within the transmission depends
on the model, but initially they ranged from three to four and five speeds gears. Six speed
automatic transmissions are the most common in cars and trucks. However, seven speed
automatics are also being available in some high performance production luxury cars as are eight

The Similarities Between Classical Music and Ellington s Jazz
One of the greatest tragedies in the 20th century can be seen in the debasing of the Jazz genre as
a unworthy equal to it s predecessor, European Classical music. This can be seen in various
statements about Jazz, such as Boris Gibalin commit, The Jazz Mania has taken on the character of
a lingering illness and must be cured by means of forceful intervention. 1 This conflict can be traced
through out the history of Jazz, as Classical composers have relatively disregarded this new type of
music. Before Duke Ellington s Cotton Club performances, Jazz play on the radio was delegated
for late night audience only. This sub culture treatment has led many critics to disregard the Jazz
movement as a dance craze, or unsuccessful recreations... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To most people the infusion of African tonality into Duke Ellington s music to create Negro art ,
questions the connection between European music and Jazz. Here Constant Lambert responds to
this.
If anyone doubts the essential element of European sophistication in Jazz, it is a simple matter
for his to compare a typical piece of Jazz, such as Duke Ellington Swampy River, first with a
lyric by Grieg and then with a record of African music. It must be clear to even the most prejudiced
listener that apart from a few rhythmical peculiarities the Ellington piece has far more in common
with the music of Grieg 6
One must understand that even when Duke infused the two tonalities of music; he still was
obligated to work within guidelines of the European Harmonic tradition.7 Yet by him keeping with
this tradition he is not obligated to write music in the form of previous composers such as
Stravinsky, Mozart, or Bach, for to do that would delegate Ellington s music as a duplicate work.
Here is the contradiction, for no Classical composer has ever been chastise for creativity in their
sound, and yet how do you explain the criticism of Ellington s work? The intentional fusing of
African and European tonality is nothing more than a continuation of numerous inventive
techniques used by musicians as seen in the changing sounds and techniques of Classical music
over time? Thus to criticize Duke for his originality one would also have

The United States Involvement Of World War II
They came, unwarned. On the 7th of December 1941, the Japanese executed a full fledged attack
on Pearl Harbor. They mercilessly created havoc, with attacks that caused the sinking of eighteen
American ships, as well as 170 aircrafts. The casualties were dreadful, with 1,177 of those lost
lives had been of the crewmen. The very next day, President Roosevelt declared war on Japan, and
thus the United Statesinvolvement of World War II. Americans of every state were absolutely
enraged and bent on their will for vengeance against the Asian country. Within the shadows of
galvanized America, Robert Oppenheimer had set his infamous Manhattan Projectinto action. This
project was so disclosed that only a limited number of men truly knew of its purpose. The
clandestine project held prior securities to the point in which famous scientists had to use
codenames in order to visit Los Alamos, even wives were kept in the dark, and only key
scientists could bring their wives along with them. (Source D) This project had been the discreet
creation of the Atomic Bombs. Time and time again, this topic had never really dissipated, its
controversial who, what and whys prompting generations to debate its palpable purpose. Was the
aim really focused for the good of all? Was it for America s self preservation and wish to promptly
put an end to all of the suffering? Many Americans to this day still believe and argue for the
usefulness of the atomic bombings, that the droppings were justified.

The Death Of Willie Closed
Willie closed his eyes and prepared to feel the pain, but it didn t come. He opened his eyes and
saw a boy about his size, wrestling Archie, and winning! Then another person stepped in front of
him and punched him in the eye, nose, then stomach. He also kicked him in both shins. You called
him here to attack us! I didn t! Willie said desperately, trying to breath. Willie could feel the blood
flowing from his nose, and down his face. Then, with all the strength he had left, and kicked the kid

and gave a cruel smile. Looks like you just got yourself into some more trouble didn t ya? He

made him eat liver and onions and baby food.
After a while, Willie felt like he could barf at any moment. They had left him again. At least my

P1 Describe the travel and tourism component industries and provide examples of domestic,
inbound and outbound organisations within them.
There are three types of tourism which is domestic, inbound and outbound tourism.
Domestic tourism
When a tourist travels around the same country, as they live in. For example when you live in
London and decide to go for a tour in the palace of Westminster, then you are a domestic tourism. A
domestic tourism traveller does not have to book a place to stay because they can go home on the
day they went to visit.
Inbound tourism

Other roads are normal local roads linking to other local places such as Hayes to Uxbridge. This
would be used by some tourists who want to discover local areas and wanted to travel to another
local city or places.
Rail
Network rail operates and owns the national rail network in UK. People or tourists can travel from
different country by trains, such as Euro star which operates UK to France. This shows that you can
travel to some certain countries by train; it is cheaper than other ports and inbound and outbound
tourist would use euro stars. There are city trains such as virgin trains (http://www.virgintrains.co.uk
/) which link London to other major cities such as Manchester and Birmingham; the cost depends
on the destination. This train would be mostly used by domestic tourist. On the other hand, there re
London underground (http://www.tfl.gov.uk/) which operates London to different and larger parts
of London such as Northolt, leisure square, Oxford Street, Marbella arch, Luton, Modern, Croydon
etc. however it can be very busy in some times due to the works times and etc. inbound and
domestic tourists would use the underground because its faster and it s a nice experience to travel
underground trains.

Peter Weir s Film Gallipoli
It can be argued that the modern world was formed under the influence of innovation, revolution,
conflict and ideology. Peter Weir s film Gallipoli is undoubtedly an inspiring and thought provoking
story that bring alive the blood drenched fields of history. It considers why soldiers enlisted, our
relationship with Great Britain, and the coming age of Australiaas a nation. Many historians,
however, suggest that the film does not tell a totally accurate version of what happened in this key
moment in our nation s story.
I was shocked by Weir s simplistic and inaccurate portrayal of the attack at the Nek. The various
inaccurate representations and twisted historical facts demonstrated in this classic Australia film
were utterly beyond belief. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the film is historically accurate. He pointed out that ...great care was taken [1] in making the film

readers by addressing simple facts. In this particular passage, Gammage illustrated the crew and
actors in rigorous figures and emphasised the hard work they put in with detail descriptions. There
was no doubt that all of these efforts were paid off with the magnificent visual impacts that the film
created. Comparisons between the film and primary photographs demonstrate that the geographical
and historical features (E.g. settings, trenches, living conditions, customers etc.) from the film were

Work hours were long (generally 70 or more hours each week). The workplace was hot and dirty
( Lowell Mill Girls ). Work was hard, tedious and sometimes dangerous. There were reports of
falls, metal object projectiles striking workers, parts of hands damaged or lost in machinery and
bales of cotton falling on workers ( The Mill Girls; Alexaraeburk; McCabe 70). Living
conditions were generally considered tolerable (Wright 11) and offered a certain degree of
normalcy, a sense of community and gender solidarity (Alexaraeburk). Wages for women were
considered very good for this time in U.S. history. Unfortunately, their $1.75 to $3 each week
was about half of the rate men in the mill received (McCabe 36). Despite these circumstances,
visiting dignitaries admired the paternalism mill owners showed to the mill girls and also the
quality of the Mill Girls work and diligence trying to improve their position and prospects in life.
British visitors were surprised to see the majority of the workers were women and their personal
appearance and demeanor were so much better than the girls working in English factories.
Interestingly, the visitors generally observed the Lowell mill girls were so infinitely superior as to
make a stranger immediately perceive that some very large cause must have created the difference.
The visitors admired the environment and attitude of both workers and owners who, in their
judgment, were pursuing higher goals

In societies around the world, there is always the need for a system of government to help maintain
structure and organization. One of the main components of a government is its legal system. As the
world becomes more globalized, and the United States receives people from diverse cultural
backgrounds, languages, and socioeconomic statuses. With these factors in mind, the room for
misunderstandings and misinterpretations significantly increase. In the legal arena, this could be a
major inconvenience to all parties involved and even life altering. Therefore, it is necessary to have

that could go wrong does go wrong. It seems that there is no hope of things getting better,
Claudia is the only character who gives us hope that Pecola s life will get better, but by the end
of the novel even she realizes that there is no hope, nothing will get better. Some people believe
that if there is no hope, then why should you care? Morrison shows us that even though there was

Gender Inequalities In Sports
The problem that this article addressed is the unequal attention that men get in the media compared

coverage that men and women college basketballgot on the internet during the time of March

participation in sports for women has increased tremendously since the title IX enactment, the
coverage of women sports, specifically on the internet, has not increased as tremendously. This
article talks about how this can affect young women. It says that while statistically males visit

The Volkswagen Beetle
The people #8217;s car #8211; generically, Volkswagen in German #8211; is almost as old as the
automobile, and the type was familiar in Germany long before the advent of the Volkswagen.
Usually these #8220;popular #8221; cars were minimal cars, though size and simplicity did not
necessarily bring them within the reach of the ordinary man in the street. Henry Ford did build
a successful universal car, to sell at a low price, but his Model T with its 2.9 litre engine was by
no means a small car, nor was the Model A that followed it. When it was in production in the late
1920s, small #8220;proper #8221; cars in Germany ranged from the 700 cc DKW to the 1 litre
Opel, with small Adlers, the BMW Dixi (a license built Austin Seven) and... Show more content on

So in 1954 they got rid of the starter button and made it easier by putting it in the ignition. In
1960 500,000 beetles are shipped to the U.S. and you start to see more and more of them when
on the road. In 1970 they invent the annoying buzzer that goes off when the door is open and the
beetle is first to install it. In 1974 the first VW plant was shut down in Wolfsberg. Then in 1976
the metallic paint and sport style rims were added to make the beetle look a little better which
wasn #8217;t to bad for a cost of $3,599. In 1978 the last beetle was produced in Germany and the
only remaining beetle production is in Mexico. (Beetle) Concept I was the sensation of the
Detroit Show in January 1994 when Volkswagen executives quite clearly stated that it was not
the forerunner of the production model. By the next motor show, at Geneva in March 1994, the
strong public reaction had led to corporate change of mind, and chairman Ferdinand Piech
decided that it would be developed as a production model. Beetle had never been an official VW
name, but the public inevitably saw Concept I as #8220;Beetle II #8221;, and on the Volkswagen
stand at the 1996 Geneva Motor Show it was presented as #8220;the new Beetle #8221;. The aim

Walkalong Collides
Did you know that walkalong gliders can stay in the air as long as you want? This happens
because of wind constantly pushing wind against the glider, therefore keeping the glider in the
air. According to recent experience with gliders, the hypothesis is going to be which glider is
faster, and which one stays up longer, and if the hypothesis is correct then the seagull glider will
be the best. If the conditions are not perfect, then this will affect the project majorly. To
understand more about walkalong gliders you must know the science behind gliders, the
condition the paper must be in, and also possible weather that will affect the project. Do you
know what it takes to make walkalong gliders fly? Walkalong gliders are very fun to use, and
one of the things walkalong gliders need, is aerodynamics, Aerodynamics is the properties of a
solid object the manner in which air flows around it, but the good thing about aerodynamics, is
that it substitutes for engines Aerodynamics is for those who cannot manufacture good engines

resistance is where the airplane is able to fly without being affected by wind. Another thing that

What you need for a walkalong glider is certain paper and that paper must be in a certain
condition. One of the paper, is common tissue paper, and this is the best paper to use if you are

if it is used it is used outside. The quality of the paper has to be as close to perfect paper as

The Purpose Of The Naturalization Process
The naturalization process for an individual starts when that individual wishes to become an
American citizen. After an interest has been established, the individual can then start with the
naturalization process. The person I interviewed said that she wanted the convenience of
traveling without a visa. After she completed the required tests and was given her certificate of
citizenship she became an official citizen. The purpose of the naturalization process is to admit
people to the status of an American citizen. This is done through series of examinations and a fee
to see if the individual is eligible to become a citizen. One check done before being admitted was
seeing if the applicant had good moral character. Eligibility for being a citizen

Gang-Related Crime Rate Essay
A majority of criminal activities in the U.S are related to gang violence. A common reason for
these crimes is due to poverty, low employment, and no education. On another note, a gang is
defined as being an age graded peer group exhibiting some permanence and establishing a sense of
boundaries through the gangidentified territory, style, and such oppositional practices as fighting
and criminal activity (source.). A lot of big cities like Chicago or Philadelphia are considered as
one of the most dangerous cities in America due to a lot of gang violence. In order to prevent
these offenses and to make cities in the U.S safer again, a solution has to be found in order to

Why Do Life Be Fair Essay
Unless you re winning a game, most of your life will not be fair. Life isn t going to give you the
win and consequently, will be hard and unjust. You will have hardships and hesitations, and that
becomes another reason to want to win and overcome this game of life. There are a couple of
arguments why life will never be fair and one is... Life will always be a competition for the best
things, and two, our idea of fairness will always be what our interests are. Now you re thinking,
Right! Being fair doesn t have to deal with competition or my interests! , but really it does. Since
I have your attention, let s find out why. First, I said before that life is a competition and won t

When we have a mind set on something, in which we have an interest in, we find ourselves
awaiting for more that is unfair about that. Say you have an interest for good grades. When you
get that bad grade in the Gradebook, what do you assume first? You assume that the test just wasn

something like that, and we don t get what we wanted, we don t say Aww my bad. That was a
mistake on my side. Instead we go straight to the unfair side. A study has shown that among
survivors of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, which killed nearly 90,000 Chinese, those who lost
family and friends were more likely than others to believe the universe was unfair. Yet those who
continued to believe the universe was fair suffered the least anxiety and depression. This shows
that when they had an interest in family and the earthquake took them away, their life became
unfair. Correspondingly, you cannot go thinking that everything you have an interest in will
always be fair, because it won t. You have to believe in the fair in the world and prosper from those

Weaknesses Of The French Crown
Importance of the Weaknesses of the French Crown in Explaining the Outbreak of the French Wars
of Religion in 1562
Previously France had been ruled by Henry II, a strong experienced ruler. It was, however, an
unfortunate jousting accident lead to the swift decline of the French monarchy. Henry s
successor, Francis II, was only fifteen years old on his accession to the throne in 1559. He was
inexperienced and easily manipulated. Charles IX, a ten year old who relied upon the help of
Catherine de Medici, his regent, then succeeded him. It was this new weak monarchy that acted as
a catalyst for the many underlying problems that had been previously controlled. The weaknesses of
the monarchy allowed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Francis Duke of Guise quickly assumed control of the army, church and foreign affairs. The
Montmorency family had been stripped of office. The sudden shift of power towards the Guise
family heightened tensions between the aristocratic factions.
The monarchy in France operated through a clientage system. The King was at the apex and he
would give money and protection to the clientage beneath him, who, in return would offer the king
loyalty. Those beneath him included large aristocratic families and below these families were the
nobility, and further down still, the lesser nobility. The three aristocratic families were therefore
reliant on the nobility below them in the system for support. In return they would give offices
and jobs to their clients. Due to a weak monarchy this clientage system broke down. The
clientage system was a good way of exercising control over the major aristocratic families.
However, in order for such a system to function there needed to be a strong monarch and a large
sum of money, neither of which were available in 1559. After the vast amount of money spent in
the Hapsburg Valios wars the royal treasury was drained of resources. The monarchy not only
lacked a strong ruler but was also economically weak. It meant that the King could no longer keep
the aristocratic families under control by the means of the clientage system. The Guise s, who had

Marie Curie s Popular Images
Although Marie Curie was not the first woman to excel in science or mathematics, she can be
considered the first major woman scientist to receive full credit for her scientific work.
Considering her Nobel prizes alone, she is ranked at the top of the scientists of the modern period.
Despite this, somehow Marie Curies popular images, as well as those embedded in some of the
scholarly literature, suggest important, but rather modest contributions to society (Pycior, 301).
Marie Curiewas born Maria Salomea Sklodowska on November 7, 1867, in Poland into a family

George Orwell s Politics And The English Language
In his essay Politics and the English Language, George Orwell argues that the English language
becomes ugly and inaccurate because our thoughts are foolish, but the slovenliness of our
language makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts. Orwell stresses the need to fight against
lazy and vague language. To make his argument, Orwell separates proper use of language
devices. He uses a simile that enhances the old fashioned trends with the modern age trends. The
abuse of language is a sentimental archaism, like preferring candles to electric light or hansom
cabs to aeroplanes. The English language can be old fashioned and trendy at the same time. A
certain group of people may use a word simply because someone of higher status made it sound
elegant. Trends are followed by bad habits. Therefore, a trend may cause a domino effect. Orwell
argues that in modern language,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Epic Of Gilgamesh And The Bhagavad Gita
In The Epic of Gilgamesh and The Bhagavad Gita, gods play an important role in society and the
way of life. In the Bhagavad Gita, people portray their gods as almighty and perfect beings. In
The Epic of Gilgamesh, the Mesopotamian people see their gods as imperfect, human like beings.
The way the people depict their gods, determines how long the religion will last and how much
power the gods withhold. The fact that the gods in The Epic of Gilgameshact a lot like humans, their
power is minimal. For example, Ishtar, the goddess of live and war, falls in love with Gilgamesh
and longs for him sexually. The craving for sex is a very human like trait. Gilgamesh later
denies Ishtar, which shows how degraded the gods really are. Also, in Mesopotamian culture, no
one god is all powerful. After Ishtar is rejected by Gilgamesh, she seeks revenge. Ishtar is not
strong enough to fulfill this task on her own, so she asks Anu, her father for permission to use
the Bull of Heaven. She says, Father, give me the Bull of Heaven, so he can kill Gilgamesh in his
dwelling (54). Anu replies, If you demand the bull from me, there will be seven years of empty
husks for the land of Uruk(54). The conversation between Ishtar and Anu is not very god like and
holds a very human aspect of a conversation you would hear between a mortal father and daughter.
The fact that Ishtar has to ask permission before acting, shows how much power she lacks. Ishtar

The standard cremation ceremony begins with the ritual cleansing, dressing and adorning of the
body. The body is then carried to the cremation ground as prayers are chanted to Yama, invoking his
aid.
It is usually the chief mourner and the eldest son who perform the Agni or fire ceremony. He
circumambulates the pyre counterclockwise for everything is backward at the time of death and
lights the pyre. The death now is an offering to Agni. After burning the corpse the chief mourner
cracks the skull with a bamboo , thus releasing the soul from entrapment in the body. After
cremation a thirteen day ritual is done for the safety of the soul till it reaches heaven. Family

after the cremation, the ashes are thrown into a river, ideally the Ganges river, and the mourners

the deceased s favorite foods. A portion is offered before his photo and later ceremonially left at
an abandoned place, along with some lit camphor. On the 31st day, a memorial service is held. In
some traditions it is a repetition of the funeral rites. At home, all thoroughly clean the house. the

Analysis Of The Quarterly Reporting System Of The Past
Mr. Williams,
You have hired me to build build a case for Suncor to forego the quarterly reporting system of the
past. In order to adopt a model that is more suitable for a sustainable business in todays ever
evolving energy sector. This executive brief is directed at providing you with the tools, facts and
necessary information to convince the board that Suncor must discard shot term reporting goals, in
order to position Suncor for long term sustainable success whilst maintaining Suncor s vision to

To begin Mr. Williams, I would like to start off by addressing the financial benefits of foregoing the
short term reporting model. The obsession with short term results by investors, asset management
firms, and corporate managers collectively leads to the unintended consequences of destroying long
term value, decreasing market efficiency, reducing investment returns, and impeding efforts to
strengthen corporate governance . The quote above depicts a clear picture that most managers, even
Suncor s managers seem to have engrained in their minds. Short term goals to meet the quarterly
demands. However, this mindset is counterintuitive to long term sustainability. No manager, board
member, or executive is likely to believe that the day to day or even month to month fluctuations of
the stock market make him richer or poorer. With this information Mr. Williams, we must

embargo against Cuba on February 7, 1962 involving restricted travel and banned trade, with the

Soviet Union agreed to remove its missiles from the island in exchange for the U.S. not invading
Cuba and removing missiles from Turkey. Afterwards tensions continued with mass Cuban

Introduction
Penguins Are Suffering from Climate Change. Most people in the world can see, agree, and

warming and climate change and get it done to save ourselves, animals and the environment that
depend on us to do something. The biggest problems have been trying to get an agreement on
what needs to be done. A lot of people feel it s not their problem, important enough or its nothing
we can do about it now. In the meantime, there are animals, including penguins, plants and other
animals dying out while we are trying to figure it out. For a lot of people the ... Show more content

Testimony Death Of A Guatemalan Village By Victor Montejo
In, Testimony: Death of a Guatemalan Village, Victor Montejo describes events surrounding the
military rГ©gimes occurring throughout Guatemala. The book itself is an eyewitness account
detailing one instance of violence between the indigenous peoples village s civil patrol and the
army. This occurrence leads to the execution and imprisonment of many villagers. Even though the
book is mainly a testimony by one person, in which he discusses the personal conflicts and struggle
between himself and the army, the account is structured around the Guatemalan civil warand the
conflict between the government and civilians. The Guatemalan Civil War occurred between the
years 1960 to 1996. It was a battle between the government of Guatemalaand... Show more content

The army also rob and burn down parts of the village. In one case, a young man who was part of
the patrols is shot and as he laid dying, reveals that the uniform worn (in that particular day) by
the army was similar to the ones the guerrillas would wear, except that the guerrillas didn t cause
any harm as they walk through the village. This has a lot to say about how the civilians saw the
government s military, and how they saw their repressive state; being something they had to do
without question due to fear. Taking a look at the testimony alone, we can also see how society
was effected. Out of Montejo s brief background detailing the failures of the presidents and the
absolute repression faced by the civilians, we can conclude that the governments force to keep
the guerillas unsuccessful was limited and pushed society into rebellions. In other words, as the
army continued to torture and persecute the innocent, many found it necessary to fall into the
hands of the guerrillas in order to stamp out their oppression. Maria Lupe s account is similar to
Montejos. She describes her hardships as a house wife, working on a plantation of a rich land
owner. Her husband worked for 50 cents per day, and her payment was in food. She mentions

The Symbols Of Righteousness In Dante s Journey
The representations of the different symbols for righteousness are shown through the shine of first
rays of sunrise, which shows that God wants Dante to change, Sin is also symbolized through the
three beasts, which could represent how he has sinned and he can t escape his past. For better
insight, analyze the sins that Dante has committed before stepping onto the path of righteousness to
understand Dante s journey.
The first rays of sunrise show that God had wanted him to change, so he sent a wake up call to
Dante. With the sunrise shining onto the little hill, the Mount of Joy, Dante found a new
inspiration. He wanted to change his ways and get back onto the True Way that God had intended
for him to be on. Dante realized that no matter what he tried, he couldn t get back on the path of
righteousness by himself. His pathway to righteousness has been blocked by his sins that he has
committed. He tries to get around his sins to righteousness, but he can t do it alone. God sends Virgil
, his Human Reason which helped him understand what he needed to do and how to do it, to help
him get into the True Way that God wanted him to lead his life by. For the final ascent to
righteousness, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Now that he has realized the error of his actions he is trying to change them and the sins are
standing in the way of righteousness. Dante s path to The Mount of Joy is blocked by the Three
Beasts of Worldliness: The Leopard of Malice and Fraud, The Lion of Violence and Ambition,
and The She Wolf of Incontinence. His sins of malice, fraud, violence, ambition, and lack of self
restraint had become physical. These beasts want him to stay a sinner so they try to push him
back into the Dark Wood of Error. As he tries to fight, he is steadily being pushed into the Dark
Woods. Dante soon realizes that his fighting is futile because he is drowning in his sins. No matter
what he does, he can t get away from his sins

Essay On Bunny
Scooter was the first pet of my very own besides having a few pet fish. I remember walking into
the small pet store in Forest Grove and making our way to the back There a cage sat, my mom
and I both looked at each other and gushed about the cuteness in the cage. Inside, were about 5
rabbits that were going crazy, bouncing off the walls of the two story metal cage. My eyes
instantly fell on the two bunnies that were a honey brown color. The other bunnies were white with
black spots all over but the brown ones took my interest. I had a perfect fantasy planned out, the
golden brown rabbitwith floppy ears will be mine and I ll name her Bunbun. This was in my mind
the vision of a perfect little bunny. After relentless bagging and a few tears, my parents agreed to
let me have a bunny. To this day, I still remember how excited I was. My mom and I entered the
pet store and I immediately ran to the back towards the cage. There was a single brown bunny
left. My mom went up to the clerk and asked to put a hold on the last brown bunny. We had to
get all the supplies and a cage before we could just bring her home. After buying everything that
was necessary and more, we returned to the pet store. I remember clearly how much the bunny
cost, only $35 dollars. The clerk walked to the cage with a cardboard carrier. As he opened the
cage, the little brown rabbit ran up to the second floor and stood up tall. I grinned widely walking
out of that pet store carrying the carrier. I could feel

Skyler Knight Research Papers
Mom, the young, and at the moment, quite uninterested Skyler Knight whispered precariously,
contending not to be too loud, as the considerate boy was indeed inside a library. Mom, he called

Over here, honey his mother replied, I m in the fiction section, we can go when I find a book for

California. He was at the library because his mom had to find a book required by school for his
older brother, Danny, who was the oldest of the five Knight children, about to start 9th grade. After
finding a book for Danny, his mother will drive his twin sisters to their first lacrosse practice for the
local team, as they just moved away from nearby San Jose, where they started playing lacrosse 7
years ago.
Skyler, now knowing where his mother was, felt comfortable walking around, though he didn t
plan on finding a book. As he walked around, he scanned the sides facing him of the books on the
shelves for interesting titles. He passed many, uninterested and unsatisfied before coming across a
book titled Chemistry for Beginners .

Difference Between Systole And Divert Flow To The Heart
2.The heart rate is controlled by the PNS, SNS, and endocrine glands.
3.The difference between systole and diastole is the pulse pressure. Systole is the contraction
phase, while diastole is the relaxation phase. Systolic blood pressure is the highest pressure on the
wall of the arteries. And the diastolic blood pressure is the lowest pressure, corresponding to when
the ventricles are filled with blood during diastole.
4.For blood to flow, there must be a difference in pressure at both ends. Blood flows from an area
of high to low pressure. The pressure difference is also created by the resistance in the blood
vessels themselves. Blood flow is compared to the pressure difference and resistance. So, pressure
drives the flow. And vasoconstriction and vasodilation divert flow to the regions that need it the
most.

Essay On Rappaccini s Daughter
The narrator stated, To Beatrice so radically had her earthly part been wrought upon by
Rappaccini s skill as poison had been life, so the powerful antidote was death(Hawthorne 136). In
Nathanial Hawthorne s Rappaccini s Daughter, readers may notice how the story relates to the
Garden of Eden. Dr. Rappaccini s daughter is confined to the garden. Even though Dr. Rappaccini
loves his daughter dearly the experiment is unfair to her. The experiment is unfair to Beatrice,
because, she is confined to the garden, unable to enjoy her life, nor is she allowed to have a love
life. First, Beatrice is confined to the garden. Dr. Rappaccini does not allow anyone in the garden.
The experiment causes Beatrice to be poisonous which the reason why she is in confinement is.
Hawthorne s narrator acknowledges, Whether Dr. Rappaccini had finish his labors in the garden
or that his watchful eye had caught the stranger s face, he now took his daughter arm and retired
(Hawthorne 17). When he notices Giovanni in the window he does not allow Beatrice out. She
sneaks out one evening while her father went out into the garden and checks on the garden.

Efficient Credit Market in the Rural Areas of Deveoping...
Introduction: A great deal of attention has been paid to the establishment of an efficient credit
market in the rural areas of developing countries over past few decades. This has been motivated
by the fact that widespread shortage of finance can act as critical barrier to agricultural growth
and development in rural areas. Lack of supply of credit can make adoption of new production
technologies unaffordable to the farmers and delay the growth in agricultural sector. Accessing
formal credit has always been difficult for farmers as small or no collateral, inadequate foreclosure
capability along with weak reinforcement arrangement in the rural areas of developing countries
make them very much unattractive for commercial banks to engage in any lending activity. This
absence of formal credit market led to the rise of informal credit markets in many developed
countries. This was an attempt to reduce the borrowing constraint that the poor farmers face and to
improve the their access to small loans and deposits. The whole movement got an institutional
structure in the beginning of 1980 s when micro lending institutions such as Grameen Bank from
Bangladesh and IRB from Indonesia showed that providing small loans to the poor individuals in
large scale can turn out to be a profitable venture. In contrary to the donor or government driven
subsidized rural credit programs, these institutions designed a less costly and more efficient
monitoring procedure to ensure repayments and

Essay on King Tut
King Tutankhamun
Introduction
King Tutankhamun was a Pharaoh of the Eighteenth dynasty who ruled from1333 BC 1324 BC,
during the period of Egyptian history known as the New Kingdom. He is the most recognized
and probably the most famous pharaoh today because of the discovery of his tomb and his
treasures. King Tut s tomb was a major discovery of the 19th century. It was a phenomenal
discovery that made headlines across the world. Up until the discovery of King Tut s tomb, it was
believed that all royal tombs had been robbed and drained of their treasure.

Technology used
There were various uses of technology used in this excavation. Carter made the hole in the upper
left hand corner and used other tools to start to chip away at the opening. Candles were used
when Carter held the candle into the darkness and permitted his eyes to adjust to the warm
ancient air that exited the tomb this air made the candle flicker. The gold furniture became
illuminated by the small candle. The next day, Callender came prepared with electric lights and
those were set up inside the tomb. This allowed the four of them to explore the tomb more
freely. Cameras were used because the tomb was eventually excavated and heavily
photographed. It was largely damaged by Carter s team, when sharp tools were used to remove
his gleaming gold and blue death mask. X rays were used because archaeologists last opened
Tutankhamun s tomb in 1968, when British scientist Ronald Harrison took a series of X rays. A
radiographer was used to radiographs revealed a bone fragment in his skull, prompting
speculation that the boy pharaoh was killed by a blow to the head. Also a various of other tools
were used to excavated the area.

archaeologist and Egyptologist born in Kensington England. Lord Carnarvon was a silent financial

The Roman Empire And The Byzantine Empire
The Byzantine Empire was the successor of the Roman Empire during the time period of Late
Antiquity and the Medieval Ages. The Byzantine Empire was also called Eastern Roman Empire,
so this proves that it was a continuation of the Roman Empire, but they were speaking Greek, and
did not forget about the Greek tradition. According to Browning, the physicians during the
Byzantine Empirelike Oreibasios, who was the Emperor Julian s physician and friend , use the
scientific and old version of Greek medicine to treat patients, and this means that medical doctors
did not forget about their Greek roots. Starting from Basil I, a Byzantine Emperor between 867
and 886, the Byzantine Empire entered its Golden Age, and according to Browning, Basil I
established a very good Empire time that would last two centuries with his precious energy and
rules. After decades, this Golden Age began to give place to decline because, according to
Browning, within the eleventh century, the attitudes and the thoughts that were primitive, spoilt,
and lack of imagination of the future of the Empire began to become strong among the aristocratic
society, and this began to harm Byzantine s economic and military power. This kind of harm to the
centralized government of the Byzantine Empire did not show itself as a poisonous snake till 1060
because the Empire could not function itself as usual. Therefore, the enemies of the Byzantine
Empire took an advantage of this weakness. Hungarians took Belgrade

Evolution of Cognitive Psychology
Evolution of Cognitive Psychology
Cognitive psychology is defined as the scientific study of mental processes (Riegler Riegler 2008,
p. 1). During the 1960s, cognitive psychology became an emerging presence in the field of
psychology. During this time period, attention to the study of how internal states, such as thoughts,
feelings, and moods influence behavior (Cherry 2010, p. 12). Cognitive psychology studies how
individuals think, comprehend language, and form beliefs. Human development involves cognitive
development. Researchers attempted to study thought through introspection. However,
introspection was not impartial because individuals are far too complex and do not share similar
thoughts and ideas. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
21). Human beings process information in a similar way. The creation of the computer was a great
advantage in the field as well. Scientists found that the human mind and a computer shared many
features in input, information processing, and organization.
Another reason in the emergence in cognitive psychology was the S R approach. The S R
approach of learning language was devised by B.F. Skinner; which was a behaviorist approach.
Skinner argued that even complex ability like language could be captured in purely S R terms
(Riegler Riegler 2008, p. 20). Noam Chomsky criticized Skinner s analysis regarding the S R
approach claiming it to appear to be scientific. Chomsky felt that language was grasped in the mind,
thus, popularized cognitive psychology. Overall, behaviorism was unreliable in the explanation of
language.
Impact of the Decline of Behaviorism on Cognitive Psychology
The decline of behaviorism enabled the presence of cognitive psychology. Critics of behaviorism
believed that the failure was to address factors such as free will, internal thoughts, and other
methods of learning (Cherry, 2010). Behaviorists introduced the emphasis on scientific method,
therefore, opening the door to cognitive psychology. According to Riegler Riegler (2008) the
failure of the S R approach, coupled with the promise and excitement

Taco Bell Literature Comparison Essay
Introduction
Taco Bell, a United States fast food franchise, is expanding to other parts of the world. In 2011,
Taco Bell introduced its Mexican inspired cuisine to India by opening its first restaurant in
Bangalore. U.S. Taco Bell restaurants are known for their on the go, quick food experience. In
contrast, Taco Bell restaurants in India are a sit down, dining experience (Tandon, 2016). As the
franchise opened more locations in India, Taco Bell also created an Indian version of the Taco Bell
website. When comparing these two websites, there are apparent cultural differences between the
sites layout and content. This report will explore these differences and compare the two Taco Bell
websites based on three of Hofstede s cultural dimensions: individualism, indulgence, and
uncertainty avoidance. Examining Hofstede s current cultural comparisons of the U.S. and India
(Shah, 2013), we hypothesize that the U.S. Taco Bell website will rank higher than its Indian
counterpart in individualism and indulgence. For uncertainty avoidance, we believe that they will
have similar results. This report will discuss the literature review of these cultural dimensions, the
methods that are used to evaluate these cultural dimensions, the results of applying these methods
on these two Taco Bell websites, discussion of these result findings, a conclusion, and
recommendations for both the U.S. and Indian Taco Bell websites. Literature Review

  • 2. The Roaring Twenties Summary The Roaring Twenties written by Joshua Zeitz exemplifies the 1920s as a time full of grace, but not without its hardships. The author states that there was an era of liberation for women, and many contemporary ideas were introduced. New ideals were being popularized and a different generation was evolving, even with the disapproval of others. Although it was a glitzy and glamorous time, the economy was being strained and eventually reached a breaking point. Even though there was a depression in the beginning and the end of the 1920s, this period was met with beauty, allure, and fascination. The rise of female emancipation created a modern look for women. Flappers contributed to the social aspect of the new democracy. Described as northern, urban, young, and single, these women loved the nightlife. These girls enjoyed jazz clubs or vaudeville shows. A flapper was generally characterized by short hair, lots of makeup, and short, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Along with these state of the art activities came a huge increase in citizens living in cities. For the first time in America s history, more people were living in cities than on farms and villages. Inventions like radio, car, and film in the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries prospered in the twenties. People had money to spend, and they spent it. Zeitz writes that ...theaters were selling 5 million tickets a week, a sum equal to roughly half the U.S. population! Like film, radio sales boomed. The annual sales for radios were $852 million, and twelve million households owned them. Even teenagers were embracing the freedom of the twenties. According to an interview done by Robert and Helen Lynd, the top reasons for disagreement between high schoolers and their parents was the number of times they could go out during the school week, the hour they came home, and their allotted spending ... • 3. Agent Of Socialisation Essay Agents of Socialisation : The Mass Media In the present day, the media is incorporated into our daily lives. Every day, through newspapers, radio, television, email, the internet and social media, are we sucked into an electronic world, which changes many of our beliefs and values about how we live our lives. It plays such a large role in almost every person s life compared to 50 years ago, when the internet did not exist. It effects things such as our political views, tastes in music, views of men, women, gay and coloured people. Media is very powerful in that it is accessible by almost every human being in the world. Over the decades, there has been a significant increase in the amount of technological advancements, especially in the way of mobile devices and computers. The mass media, being an agent of socialisation, means that it has a significant influence on our lives, primarily in the way we interact with each other and learn social and cultural behaviours from others. Media is most powerful when the individual using the agent is young, and when it can educate, inform and change people s opinions. The effectiveness can be very positive or very negative, for example, it can educate people of a social disaster and can bring people together. With things such as Facebook, where people can hide behind a computer screen and say nasty things to people, or pretend to be people they aren t, it emits a negative vibe. However, Facebook can be used in an effective way, to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Evaluate The Accuracy Of Parachute Results Overall, I think the experiment went well, but the results collected at the end were invalid and reasonably inaccurate, however, on the other hand, errors and mistakes occurred during the investigation. The dropping time of the parachute was not accurate because it went off course, so it is not reliable as we could not control the factors which affected the parachute. This is because the parachute had more air resistance, but the weight force was less and took way too much time to reach the ground. For example; the weather and weight affected the parachute s drop time and we could ve tested the parachute from different heights to get more accurate and valid results. My results prove my prediction correct that large surface area parachutes will take more time to land as more air particles hit with the parachute. This explains that the parachute will take more time to reach the ground safely. My team tried to make the surface area of the parachute as large as possible, so there would be more air resistance because of the more the air resistance, the slower it will descend. My team s parachutes were best at landing, but it went off course because the object was not heavy enough, so air resistance force... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the other hand, the prediction was correct that the larger the surface area of the parachute, the longer it will take to reach the ground safely because the purpose of the parachutes is to land people or objects safely and slowly. After this investigation squared shaped parachutes were better because it took the greater amount of time to land. However, the parachute went off course because more air particles hit on the parachute, but the weight force was less. This is because unbalanced forces acted on it. Overall, this investigation worked well because my team s parachute took the longest time (9 seconds) to reach the ground compared to other parachutes, but floated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Automatic Transmission Essay ABSTRACT The transmission in a car which works automatically depending on the vehicle speed and engine speed is called as automatic transmission while as a manual transmission is the one there is a manual clutch pedal used while changing gears that allow the driver to change the gears as per driving needs. In a country like India, automatic transmission gives only a driving pleasure to the driver in heavy traffic as there is no need of changing gears because of the fact that it lacks a clutch paddle system which gives complete rest to one leg of the driver. Manual transmission fails to provide such an added benefit to drivers. But in developing countries, the idea of an automatic transmission is not wise and applicable to all due to the economic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For the selection of reverse mode , the driver must come to a complete stop, depress the shift lock button and select reverse. Severe damage may be caused to the transmission if the car is not made to come to a complete stop. Most of the modern day automatic transmissions have a safety mechanism in place, which prevents putting the car in reverse when the vehicle is moving forward. 3.Neutral / No gear (N) This mode is almost same as in manual cars where it allows the vehicle to coast freely under its own weight and gain momentum without the motive force from the engine. 4.Drive (D) This mode of the transmission is to engage the full range of available gear which allows the vehicle to move forward and accelerate through the range of gears. In this mode the gear changes automatically as the cars gains speed. The number of gear ratios within the transmission depends on the model, but initially they ranged from three to four and five speeds gears. Six speed automatic transmissions are the most common in cars and trucks. However, seven speed automatics are also being available in some high performance production luxury cars as are eight speed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Similarities Between Classical Music and Ellington s Jazz One of the greatest tragedies in the 20th century can be seen in the debasing of the Jazz genre as a unworthy equal to it s predecessor, European Classical music. This can be seen in various statements about Jazz, such as Boris Gibalin commit, The Jazz Mania has taken on the character of a lingering illness and must be cured by means of forceful intervention. 1 This conflict can be traced through out the history of Jazz, as Classical composers have relatively disregarded this new type of music. Before Duke Ellington s Cotton Club performances, Jazz play on the radio was delegated for late night audience only. This sub culture treatment has led many critics to disregard the Jazz movement as a dance craze, or unsuccessful recreations... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To most people the infusion of African tonality into Duke Ellington s music to create Negro art , questions the connection between European music and Jazz. Here Constant Lambert responds to this. If anyone doubts the essential element of European sophistication in Jazz, it is a simple matter for his to compare a typical piece of Jazz, such as Duke Ellington Swampy River, first with a lyric by Grieg and then with a record of African music. It must be clear to even the most prejudiced listener that apart from a few rhythmical peculiarities the Ellington piece has far more in common with the music of Grieg 6 One must understand that even when Duke infused the two tonalities of music; he still was obligated to work within guidelines of the European Harmonic tradition.7 Yet by him keeping with this tradition he is not obligated to write music in the form of previous composers such as Stravinsky, Mozart, or Bach, for to do that would delegate Ellington s music as a duplicate work. Here is the contradiction, for no Classical composer has ever been chastise for creativity in their sound, and yet how do you explain the criticism of Ellington s work? The intentional fusing of African and European tonality is nothing more than a continuation of numerous inventive techniques used by musicians as seen in the changing sounds and techniques of Classical music over time? Thus to criticize Duke for his originality one would also have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They mercilessly created havoc, with attacks that caused the sinking of eighteen American ships, as well as 170 aircrafts. The casualties were dreadful, with 1,177 of those lost lives had been of the crewmen. The very next day, President Roosevelt declared war on Japan, and thus the United Statesinvolvement of World War II. Americans of every state were absolutely enraged and bent on their will for vengeance against the Asian country. Within the shadows of galvanized America, Robert Oppenheimer had set his infamous Manhattan Projectinto action. This project was so disclosed that only a limited number of men truly knew of its purpose. The clandestine project held prior securities to the point in which famous scientists had to use codenames in order to visit Los Alamos, even wives were kept in the dark, and only key scientists could bring their wives along with them. (Source D) This project had been the discreet creation of the Atomic Bombs. Time and time again, this topic had never really dissipated, its controversial who, what and whys prompting generations to debate its palpable purpose. Was the aim really focused for the good of all? Was it for America s self preservation and wish to promptly put an end to all of the suffering? Peter Weir s film Gallipoli is undoubtedly an inspiring and thought provoking story that bring alive the blood drenched fields of history. It considers why soldiers enlisted, our relationship with Great Britain, and the coming age of Australiaas a nation. Many historians, however, suggest that the film does not tell a totally accurate version of what happened in this key moment in our nation s story. In this particular passage, Gammage illustrated the crew and actors in rigorous figures and emphasised the hard work they put in with detail descriptions. There was no doubt that all of these efforts were paid off with the magnificent visual impacts that the film created. Comparisons between the film and primary photographs demonstrate that the geographical and historical features (E.g. settings, trenches, living conditions, customers etc.) from the film were fairly accurate and therefore proving Gammage s idea/ statement. They helped shape mill rules, protested actively for fair wages, improved working conditions and secured shorter hours. They helped establish women s employment possibilities. Living conditions were generally considered tolerable (Wright 11) and offered a certain degree of normalcy, a sense of community and gender solidarity (Alexaraeburk). Wages for women were considered very good for this time in U.S. history. Unfortunately, their $1.75 to $3 each week was about half of the rate men in the mill received (McCabe 36). Despite these circumstances, visiting dignitaries admired the paternalism mill owners showed to the mill girls and also the quality of the Mill Girls work and diligence trying to improve their position and prospects in life. British visitors were surprised to see the majority of the workers were women and their personal appearance and demeanor were so much better than the girls working in English factories. The story is grim and bleak, everything that could go wrong does go wrong. It seems that there is no hope of things getting better, Claudia is the only character who gives us hope that Pecola s life will get better, but by the end of the novel even she realizes that there is no hope, nothing will get better. Some people believe that if there is no hope, then why should you care? Morrison shows us that even though there was no hope we still should care just as much, if not more by giving us Claudia. The sudden shift of power towards the Guise family heightened tensions between the aristocratic factions. The monarchy in France operated through a clientage system. The King was at the apex and he would give money and protection to the clientage beneath him, who, in return would offer the king loyalty. Those beneath him included large aristocratic families and below these families were the nobility, and further down still, the lesser nobility. The three aristocratic families were therefore reliant on the nobility below them in the system for support. In return they would give offices and jobs to their clients. Due to a weak monarchy this clientage system broke down. The clientage system was a good way of exercising control over the major aristocratic families. However, in order for such a system to function there needed to be a strong monarch and a large sum of money, neither of which were available in 1559. After the vast amount of money spent in the Hapsburg Valios wars the royal treasury was drained of resources. The monarchy not only lacked a strong ruler but was also economically weak. This executive brief is directed at providing you with the tools, facts and necessary information to convince the board that Suncor must discard shot term reporting goals, in order to position Suncor for long term sustainable success whilst maintaining Suncor s vision to deliver economic prosperity, improved social well being and a healthy environment for today and tomorrow. To begin Mr. Williams, I would like to start off by addressing the financial benefits of foregoing the short term reporting model. The obsession with short term results by investors, asset management firms, and corporate managers collectively leads to the unintended consequences of destroying long term value, decreasing market efficiency, reducing investment returns, and impeding efforts to strengthen corporate governance . The quote above depicts a clear picture that most managers, even Suncor s managers seem to have engrained in their minds. Short term goals to meet the quarterly demands. However, this mindset is counterintuitive to long term sustainability. No manager, board member, or executive is likely to believe that the day to day or even month to month fluctuations of the stock market make him richer or poorer. Introduction: A great deal of attention has been paid to the establishment of an efficient credit market in the rural areas of developing countries over past few decades. This has been motivated by the fact that widespread shortage of finance can act as critical barrier to agricultural growth and development in rural areas. Lack of supply of credit can make adoption of new production technologies unaffordable to the farmers and delay the growth in agricultural sector. Accessing formal credit has always been difficult for farmers as small or no collateral, inadequate foreclosure capability along with weak reinforcement arrangement in the rural areas of developing countries make them very much unattractive for commercial banks to engage in any lending activity. This absence of formal credit market led to the rise of informal credit markets in many developed countries. This was an attempt to reduce the borrowing constraint that the poor farmers face and to improve the their access to small loans and deposits. The whole movement got an institutional structure in the beginning of 1980 s when micro lending institutions such as Grameen Bank from Bangladesh and IRB from Indonesia showed that providing small loans to the poor individuals in large scale can turn out to be a profitable venture.
