This semester has been filled with many different encounters and situations. Many different

During World War I, the Allies and Central Powers fought a long and grueling war. Ernest
Hemingway served in WWI as an ambulance driver and did not have a pedestrian life.
Hemingway wrote the book Farewell to Arms based on his time in WWI. In A Farewell to
Arms, the main character Frederic Henry is fighting in the Italian army; however, he is an
American. During his time in the war, Henry meets a woman named Catherine Barkley and
pursues a complex, quasi relationship at first. After some time Henry and Catherine s
relationship deepens as they spend more time together. Throughout the book, many heavy
themes are discussed: appearances, uselessness, and identity. In Hemingway s Farewell to

Though my ears are not exceptionally honed nor trained to point out musical mistakes, I would like
to add that mistakes, if any, were not thoroughly noticeable. The musicians blended well and
produced the right effect based on the musical context. However, when the vocal soloists sang in

other, popular student development theories, I find that Schlossberg s transition theory is related to
the different phases students will go through as they proceed through their collegiate careers.

role that results in changed relationships, routines, assumptions and roles (Patton, Renn, Guido,

Women portraits in the 1600s have obvious influence from these sculptors, but also lack the
focus to detail and movement. Andrea Bolgi sculpted St. Helen which is housed in St. Peters.
The sculpture has movement expressed through the drapery which is used by Bernini in a
copious amount of his sculptures and Algardi used this in his bust of Olympia Maidalchini
Pamphilj. Also in St. Peters Basilica, Francesco Mochi takes the same approach to his sculpture
of St. Veronica. St. Veronica is portrayed in a dramatic way, with multiple folds in her dress and

He adds a story to his portrait, and has intense detailed style to the face of the sitter without losing
beauty and passion. Finelli s bust is elegantly beautiful, but is not done natural. Finelli fails to focus
on anything about his sitters face which leaves her looking like just another wealthy woman with no
depth to her. Algardi adds detail to the face of his sitter, but instead of portraying at her best
moment, takes a naturalistic approach which makes the portrait unflattering. Bernini added
detail needed, but still managed to make the portrait look like the best version of the sitter.
Although, this may represent the beauty of the sitter more than the skill of the artist. Bernini,
Algardi, and Finelli are all infatuated with detail, this is what makes their portraits stand out
from all of the others. These are some of the first portraits of woman sculpted, and it is fitting to
the time that the focus on detail is used on accessories or sexuality. The artists focus on detail,
but each to different parts of their works to create different qualities. Finelli has fine detail to
accessories, and intrinsic drill work. While Bernini is at the other spectrum, detail to face but

I found that the participant observation method was the most helpful and easiest method to use. I
was able to talk with the firemen about their experiences and see how they interacted. I also worked
out with them and sat around talking with them. This method allowed me to get information about
their interactions because I could easily observe them talking amongst themselves and to me. One
of the downsides of this method was that I could not record information as I was observing. Writing
down what they were saying and what was going on would seem rude and would be hard to do. I
had to wait until leaving the firehouse before recording what happened. This led to more vague

The evolution of technology has become indescribable. Technology is prevalent in our society, as
well as its portrayal in the media, a seemingly essential aspect of our everyday lives. Although
many idolize how technology has improved our lives, many fail to recognize technology s faults.
By using three persuasive literary devices (pathos, logos, and ethos), Neil Postman expresses his
concern for technological advancement and possible failure in the book Amusing Ourselves to
Death. Logos appeals to logic; when using a persuasive device such as logos, you are using
logical reasoning to appeal to the reader. When using logos, you must include facts, statistics,
and citing credible sources. By using ethos, the author conveys his ideas while being well aware
of what he is talking about by utilizing credible sources. Pathos, however, conveys the author s
ideas by appealing to the reader s emotions. Postman does an outstanding job of orchestrating a
piece using the most popular persuasive elements. Postman was able to incorporate all three of
these devices into his book, but the most prominent one in my opinion, and that helps to best
convey Postman s point, is logos; statistics and facts are two things you very rarely can fight
against. Over and over Postman uses facts on how the media is basically dumbing us down. For
example, Postman pointed out that with the rise of the televised age there was then a decrease in
literacy.
