Pholx Noctunix Research Paper
Pholx noctunix grows in the tundra ecosystem. The only biotic factor that impacts Pholx noctunix is
the caterpillars that like to feed on its leaves, this has caused it to adapt by developing thorns along the
stem to prevent caterpillars from being able to reach the leaves. The majority of the factors that affect
plants that grow in the tundra are abiotic, including:
Fluctuating temperatures, with an average winter temperature of 34˚C and average summer
temperatures of between 3 12˚C (Ucmp.berkeley.edu, 2004).
Fluctuating light intensity. During winter, a layer of snow covers the ground, causing less light to

Summary Of A Sunrise On The Veld And At The Pitt Rivers
The short stories, A Sunrise on the Veld and At the Pitt Rivers , have nothing in common if you
analyze them on a shallow literature level. A Sunrise on the Veld by Doris Lessing, highlights some of
the reasons why life is so valuable. Lessing hints her readers that this short story is set somewhere in
the desert by, ... the flesh of his soles contracted on the chilled earth, and his legs began to ache with
cold... He slung the shoes over his shoulder... they would be necessary when the ground became too
hot to bear, (Lessing, pg. 1212). Most deserts get heated by the sun by day, but loses the heat at night.
The boy starts hunting, at first, but then is distracted by a wounded buck. Seeing this buck suffer,
depicts him, especially sad. A boy is also the protagonist in At the Pitt Rivers by Penelope Lively. This
boy spends his time in a museum, observing people and writing poems as the time passes. He keeps
track of a couple he sees at the museum. The couple catches his attention because they are not his
ideal of what a couple should look like. If a kindergartener reads these two short stories, he/she would
find nothing in common with the stories. But, if the reader has the ability to analyze the text in more
depth, he/she would find that they are more similar than the kindergartener would think.
As an advanced reader, a comparison that is prevalent in both stories is, society s thinking of the ideal
can be challenged by with what you see. In A Sunrise on the

Kaiser Wilhelm And Otto Von Bismarck s Policies Differed

World War I Essay Questions
1. Both Kaiser Wilhelm and Otto Von Bismarck s policies differed. In reality, Kaiser based his ideas
and was influenced off of Bismarck. Wilhelm II was mostly concerned with the power of the German
Navy. He consistently tried to get the best of the best for the navy and always got the latest weapons
for them. Also, he attempted to make Germany the predominant world power. His aim to get allies for
Germany was a complete failure. When Kaiser tried to reach out and get help and support from
Britain, he had failed once again. That was due to the fact that he tried already to get colonies in
Africa, The Pacific, and China. At his fault, we were left in isolation and had Austria Hungary as our
only ally. On the other hand, Bismarck s efforts into getting alliances were much more contributive.
Bismarck had began with isolating France and getting Russia and Britain to occasionally check in on
France, while also maintaining good ties with Britain. He essentially had a more complex system in
that area. The only thing Bismarck was known unsuccessful for ,was the decrease in domestic
development for Germany. Kaiser Wilhelm and Otto Von Bismarck constantly disagreed within their
foreign policies. The main disparity among these two men were their ages. Kaiser being the youngest
had completely different political ideologies than Bismarck ( Otto Von Bismarck) In the face of
differences between these

Computer Misuse Act 1990
1. Computer Misuse Act 1990
The computer misuse act was created to make it an offence to access a computer that someone is not
entitled to use.
Offences that are covered by the act include hacking, accessing computers without the authority to do
so and purposefully installing malware.
The act makes it illegal to access or to attempt to access a computer system without the correct
authorisation and If the hacker tries to get into the system but is unsuccessful they can be taken to
court for this.
The act introduced three criminal offences:
1. Accessing computer material with authority.
2. Access with the intention to commit or facilitate commission of further offences.
3. Unauthorised modification of computer materials
In 2006 the computer misuse ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Freedom of Information Act 2000 and Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002
The freedom of information act covers the right of the people to look up information that would be
held by a public body.
All institutions must have a procedure if a member of the public wishes to look for a document ie
enquire through a webpage.
The Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 covers public information that falls under the
influence of the Scottish parliament.
The act has a wide reach however there are some documents that cannot be asked for by the public for
example the public cannot look a files from the ministry of defence for the sake of national security.
The act is a controversial one, because most public bodies would prefer to work in secret however
these requests have been turned down by the information commissioner for Scotland who is
responsible in such cases.
There is another act that works similarly to this it is known as the Environmental Information
Regulations 2004 which allows the people to gain information on the environment.

Disadvantages Of Intelligence Led Policing
In preparation for my debate on the topics of intelligence led policing and Compstat policing, I have
discovered the many advantages and disadvantages of using intelligence led policing and Compstat
policing. According to Carter Carter (2009), intelligence led policing is the collection of and analysis
of data relating to crime, used by law enforcement in developing tactical responses to threats and/or
strategic planning related to emerging changing threats (p. 317). When applied correctly, intelligence
led policing is a tool used for information sharing in identifying threats and developing responses to
prevent those threats from reaching fruition (Carter, 2011). One of the advantages of using intelligence
led policing is its incorporation of data analysts. The role of the data analyst in the context of
intelligence led policing allows them to take specially trained analysts to take raw data from
information found in reports and translate it into useful information for the officers, allowing the
police to deploy resources more effectively and efficiently (Griffiths, 2016). Another advantage is its
application through preventative and predictive policing (proactive policing), in which law
enforcement take data and identify crucial variables such as terrorism or the emergence of criminal
organizations, in hopes of stopping the problem at its roots (Carter, 2011). Terrorism is especially
important and emphasized after the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Centers in

Essay on Campus Unrest
Campus Unrest
In response to great opposition to United States involvement in the Vietnam War, the antiwar
movement of the 1960s sprung forth. A vast majority of involvement in this movement was
represented on college campuses across the nation. Many college students wholeheartedly believed
that the war in Vietnam served no point. America was simply once again sticking its nose in business
that was not our own. As a result of the war, universities nationwide in the sixties were in uproar as
students attempted to express their opinions through both violent and nonviolent means. Anti Vietnam
protests were first displayed through teach ins that took place during the fall and spring semesters (

Fitzpatrick on the other hand expressed a very different opinion: We are fighting in Vietnam not to
save our little brown brother, but to save ourselves...we live in a world today of civilizational struggle
(Hochman 1).The third professor, Susman, suddenly became extremely angry and bolted towards the
two, banging on the podium when he approached. The crowd witnessing the event went wild and
stood to applaud Susman, and the remainder of the teach in proved to be just as out of control. Eleven
speeches were given in all discussing U.S. involvement in Vietnam and other pertinent issues. This
teach in at Rutgers was similar to many others nationwide that took place on college campuses in
opposition to the war (Hochman 2). Another teach in took place at the University of California
Berkely. It was the largest teach in yet and it lasted for thirty six hours and over thirty thousand people
participated in it. There were also marches on Washington Avenue in which twenty five thousand
people attended. These marches became popular when the college students went home for the summer
(Wells 25). Also, in the early 1960s drastic social change was being pushed from another direction at
universities. An organization known as Students for a Democratic Society sprung forth in order to
instigate this type of reform ( Vietnam 2). Leaders of the SDS realized that many

Toothpaste And Its Effects On The Body
Toothpaste is for everyone who has teeth, but this toothpaste in particular is for adults, teens, or
tweens. The reason I say adults over the different generations is that the time in one s life where their
teeth start falling out or are removed is different for everyone. Some people with false teeth may
continue to use this product, although there are special products used to clean dentures that are more
effective. Adults who want whiter teeth without the damaging effects of a whitening toothpaste would
use this product. Also, there has been a trend in toothpastes that benefit the enamel, causing Crest to
follow the trend by introducing a toothpaste that does not damage or cause sensitivity to the teeth.
Teens and tweens may begin using the toothpaste when their parent buys it or they may experiment
with toothpastes to find something they like over what their parents buy. Generally, grown children
buy the same or opposite products as their parents, so depending on the child either case is possible.
This product is not gender specific, but uses the want of both genders to look appealing and be
healthy. Ethnicity and lifestyle do not determine whether a person will buy this product either,
although the flavor may be more appealing to people with certain cultural backgrounds. People
looking for an all natural or green product would not be the target market for this Crest toothpaste,
neither would those living a simple lifestyle. People that do not normally interact with

The Epic of Gilgamesh
The story about Gilgamesh is one of the earliest pieces of world literature dating back to the second
millennium B.C.E. This story has been evolved gradually over a long span of a millennium, and has
been enjoyed by many nations. The Epic of Gilgamesh teaches life lessons that apply to the past and
present while revolving around the question of what it means to be human, and to experience the
phenomenon of friendship, love, and death.
Notably, the thing about human life is that everyone desires friendship or to be simply not be alone. In
the story of the epic of Gilgamesh talks about how friendship changed his whole life. Gilgamesh used
to be a terrible ruler led by arrogance, and brutality of his people. He was overconsumed with power,
therefore doing whatever he wanted whenever he wanted. It seemed that Gilgamesh grew bored of
life, and had a deep hole in his heart as such something was missing from his life. One day Gilgamesh
told his mother I want a friend for my own counselor, for my own Counselor do I want a friend
(Foster 106). He needed someone to confide in as well as talk too about his plans and future.
Gilgamesh had everything in his life from riches to power, but it seemed like the thing he craved more
than success was someone to take the journey beside him. In a

Organization Design in FMC Green River
Organization design is a formal, guided process for integrating the people, information and technology
of an organization. It is used to match the form of the organization as closely as possible to the
purpose of the organization. This design process seeks to improve and facilitate the efforts of members
within the organization. With respect to FMC Corporation s Green River, Wyoming facility, under the
guidance of this entity s site manager, Kenneth Dailey, the design should be approached as an internal

Therefore, a team was sent to the Aberdeen market in order to evaluate this plant s activities and
policies, in order to identify potential recommendations for Green River, since Aberdeen seemed to
continue to improve and excel within its market and in terms of its management and output.
In analyzing the ability of management of Aberdeen, one may note that this facility can be described
as laid back and easygoing. As begun with the initial Aberdeen plant manager, Bob Lancaster, then
proceeded by Jeff Bust and finally Roger Campbell, Aberdeen was managed as a family instead of a
simple work plant. As noted within Clawson s, Custom Business Resources, Aberdeen was built on
trust of every employee. Lancaster s view was to manage in a manner to eliminate fear in his
employees and instead increase productivity and potential beneficial risk taking, by organizing self
directing work teams, expecting the employees to assume and exercise responsibility and maintain
high standards of quality and service. Teams were created for every division with respective team
leaders elected to help manage the family. Management made their employees feel trusted and
implemented an almost self directed system with just the appropriate amount of upper level
development in planning and

Listening Skills In Counseling
Counseling is a process that occurs when client engage a professional counselor to set time aside

Listening, attending, empathy, questioning, summarising are all the counseling skills for a trained

One of the most important limitations is dealing with anxiety. The moment I am face to face with
clients, I am feeling nervous and out of words. Imagine, being in a room with someone who is a
stranger to me and I should not expect her to start the conversation instead. Understood that this could
be her first time being in a counseling session but to prevent her from keeping silent, I had to start a
conversation to start the session. Besides that I have to also build a relationship and trust with clients
so in days ahead, she will feel comfortable conversing with me. Time is a crucial thing for me.
Basically, I have a habit of looking at the time for every five minutes although counseling session took

Touchdown after Touchdown, point after point, but I sat motionless on the couch, like a sack of

The morning games were beginning to end, and the afternoon games were beginning to kickoff now
and I was losing 65 55, but I knew that a comeback was still possible. Then all the stars began to
align. Within the span of 3 minutes, McCown threw a touchdown, Evans caught a touchdown and
Matt Prater nailed a field goal right through the middle of the uprights. I was now winning 97 86 with
only the Sunday night game remaining. Tonight the Vikings were playing the seemingly unstoppable
Jaguars in Jacksonville. Earlier in the day, I ended up making the last minute decision to start Murray

East Asian financial crisis are an evidence of fact that economies are prone to fianacial pressures in
spite of a stable sustainable growth rate. The East Asian economic crisis is the most important
economic event in the region of the past few decades. That much is agreed. Beyond this, there is yet
no unanimity about its root causes nor about the solutions. The differences of views are being debated
in academic and policy circles and reflected in the media. One thing though is certain: the earlier

the countries had been praised (indeed, over praised) for having strong linkages between the public
and private sectors. Today, that is totally condemned as the fatal flaw of crony capitalism. As an
alternative to mainly blaming the countries, there rapidly developed another view of how the crisis
emerged and spread. This view put the blame on the developments of the global financial system, with
the combination of the following features:
Financial deregulation and liberalisation across the world (as the legal basis);
The increasing interconnection of markets and speed of transactions through computer technology (as
the technological basis); and
The development of large institutional financial players (such as the speculative hedge funds, the
investment banks, and the huge mutual and pension funds).
This combination has led to the rapid shifting of large blocks of short term capital flowing across
borders in search of quick and high returns, to the tune of US$2 trillion a day.

foreign direct investment. The remainder is for speculation or short term investments

W H Auden On A Tyrant Essay
The W.H. Auden of the 1930s is quite a different man compared to his to his 1940s counterpart. Not
only did his personal viewpoints and opinions dramatically change, but his but the subjects of his
poems also demonstrated a marked shift. Characterized by powerful political rhetoric, his earlier work
may appear to have little in common with his later poems, which examined religious themes.
However, while the subject matter of Auden s work changes, his poems consistently forcing the
audience to reexamine their own world views. The vast majority of Auden s earlier work revolves
around the political upheaval he witnessed as a young man. His travels took him from Spain to China

As time went on, Auden gradually distanced himself from his political poems. He felt that they were
inherently dishonest, and comprised the integrity of the relationship between reader and poet by
forcing the reader to accept only one interpretation of a political event: the poet s own personal
opinion. Coupled with Auden s increasing personal spirituality, this caused the focus of his poems to
shift from politics to religion and morality. He was an observant Christian, though he only practices
the aspects of the faith that focused on betterment of mankind. He felt that like church doctrines, like
all human creations, were subject to judgment (Mendelson). This opinion is especially prominent in
his poem Victor . His protagonist had been raised in a devoutly religious environment. Throughout his
life, Victor continues to live according to the rules and regulation laid forth in the Bible. Auden uses
the concept of time as an extended metaphor to relay Victor s emotional state. As a young man in
frosty December , there is no life around Victor, and everything is bleak. His life bears no color, much
like the cold winter itself; he has his strict religious rules and nothing more. However, the deep cold
begins to slowly ebb away as April comes around. Winter concedes to spring as the beautiful Anna
brings life and vibrancy to Victor s previously barren world. He immediately falls for her, as she

Resilience Theory Applied For A Chance Essay
Resilience Theory Applied to A Chance in the World
Anthony Shohan
Bridgewater State University
Resilience, in its simplest form, is the ability for someone or something to recover after an action has
occurred against them or it, whether it be an emotional and/or physical action (Earvolino Ramirez
2007; Dyer McGuinness 1996). Resilience is defined, more directly, as the positive end of the
distribution of developmental outcomes among individuals at high risk (Luthar et al., 2000 pg. 3).
When resilience is dovetailed with the ideals of social work or psychology, resilience can be the
determining factor in the future of an individual. In the realm of social work, resilience theory can be
applied to individuals as a way to formulate whether or not that individual was or will be successful in
life. Resilience theory focuses on the strengths of individuals. Like most theories used in social work
and psychology, there are both the strengths of the theories as well as the limitations of the theories.
Resilience theory cannot escape this trend. There are numerous strengths and, in contrast, limitations
with resilience theory. Luthar, Cicchetti, and Becker (2000) identify a limitation of resilience theory
with the idea that even though a child is thriving in their current time, as time goes on, their ability to
continue adapting decreases. Luthar et al. (2000) continue to note that the majority of studies
conducted on resilience are mainly empirical

the city. Kornilov s soldiers refused to try to take Petrograd by force. Kornilov was arrested, his
general commited suicide, and Kerensky had a new problem on his hands.
The Bolsheviks now had control of the Soviets and the Red Guard, control of Petrograd, and a small
but well organized and armed militia. The Mensheviks had allied themselves with Kerensky, Kerensky
had tried to broker a deal with the landowners, and had sent the Cossacks out to subdue the
revolutionaries in the countryside. None of this was well received by the workers. At the urging of
Trotsky, the Red Guards stormed the Winter Palace, Kerensky ran to France, and the Bolsheviks were
now in control.
But wasn t Trotsky on the side of the Mensheviks?
He had been, but he was one of many who were greatly angered by the Mensheviks support of
Kerensky. He was by now a pacifist as far as the war was concerned, a believer in permanent
revolution, and totally opposed to Kerensky s alliances with the propertied classes. So he joined with
the Bolsheviks when he returned to Russia from his long and turbulent exile abroad. He was

The Power of Carver s Little Things Essay
The Power of Carver s Little Things
To a reader unfamiliar with his work, Raymond Carver s short story, Little Things may seem devoid of
all literary devices owning to good writing. Fortunately, these people are mistaken. With his
minimalistic style, it is what Carver doesn t write that makes his work so effective. Most of Carver s
short stories describe situations that many people could find themselves in and that is why his work is
so appealing to readers. They are not restricted to harsh explicative details or over dramatized
language, but are allowed to create their own rationale for the actions of the characters and the
consequent results.
Little Things begins with an explanation of the setting when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Carver describes this scene with an emotional detachment, concentrating more on what is happening,
rather than why. In her essay about understanding Carver s revisions, Hashimoto says that
minimalistic writing describes the events as they transpire, allowing the reader to draw his own
conclusions. It is most likely that this is Carver s goal.
On account of Carver s use of the outsider s perspective, the reader is not prepared for the climactic
ending: She would have it, this baby. She grabbed for the baby s other arm. She caught the baby
around the wrist and leaned back. But he would not let go. He felt the baby slipping out of his hands
and he pulled back very hard. In this manner, the issue was decided. Here, the reader comes to the
point of the story, that two people s own selfishness blinds them to the suffering they cause another.
Carver says of this approach. Almost all the characters is my stories come to the point where they
realize that compromise, giving in, plays a major role in their lives. Then one single moment of
revelation disrupts the pattern of their daily lives. It s a fleeting moment during which they realize that
they don t want to compromise anymore. And afterwards they realize that nothing ever really changes
(Carson). The story ends with the reader guessing at the emotional depth of the characters and why
they would stop at nothing to get what they wanted. As the man

Oxymorons In Romeo And Juliet
Throughout Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet and the other poems I have studied, it is evident that
being in love can incite a diverse range of emotions, and the complications and concern it can spark in
those around them. In Shakespeare s prologue to the epic tragedy, it becomes apparent that both
Romeo and his love, Juliet, are in for an immense battle with their emotions when he refers to them as
a pair of star crossed lovers, implying that they re tragically destined to fall apart.
We see at the beginning of the play how naïve and immature young Romeo is from how purely
infatuated he appears to be with Rosaline. This can be seen through a variety of language techines and
emotions used by Shakespeare, one of them being his use of oxymorons ... Show more content on

Within Romeo s speech about Juliet in Act 1, Scene 5, Shakespeare uses a lot of religious imagery to
convey Romeo s intense, passionate feelings towards Juliet. For example, during one of the couple s
first exchanges Romeo refers to his lips as, two blushing pilgrims. His lips are the pilgrims that are
seeking the holy place, which, in this particular case, is Juliet s lips. In saying this, Romeo is almost
placing Juliet on some sort of religious pedestal, implying that she has a God like power and control
over him, much like God would to a pilgrim. His religious references show the severity of their love
and Shakespeare may have done it as it helps create an escape from their damnation according to
Christian values by creating the religion of love. Even though some Elizabethan audience members
may find it difficult to relate to the character of Romeo due to his fickle nature towards love, they
would understand his feelings through religion. This is because during Shakespeare s time relgion was
thriving so the audience may possibly understand how important Juliet is to Romeo by how important
religion is to them. However, others may have been deeply offended by this use of religion for a girl
Romeo just met as he frequently refers to Juliet as some sort of God . This may incite some outrage in
audience members as God is

Digestion Reactions Lab Report
Gas Production in Relation to Combustion Reactions
Introduction
Chew, swallow, digest, and pass: these may not seem like anything other than simple functions, but
they are very important when it comes to the process of digestion, as well as, the environment. This is
because all of these actions relate to the subject of gas production. Reactions in which gasses are
formed take place in many aspects of the natural world. Whether it is within the atmosphere or within
the body. A gas that is a perfect example for both of these situations is CO2. In relation to biological
function, CO2 is produced by internal combustion reactions. Combustion reactions are, simply put, the
interaction of a carbon and hydrogen compound with oxygen gas that produces ... Show more content

In this case, digestion is left to bacteria living within the digestive tract (Health and Science Pipeline
Initiative, n.d.). An important example of this bacteria is Lactobacillus Acidophilus, commonly
referred to as L. acidophilus (Robertson, 2017). It is of the Gram positive species and the
Lactobacillus genus (Hammes, n.d.). It can be located in large amounts in the small intestine, where it
assists in the fermentation of indigestible carbohydrates and the production of lactic acid (Williams,
n.d.). Another microbial bacteria that produces lactic acid is Bifidobacterium longum. This bacteria is
of the Bifidobacterium genus and the Gram positive species (Dority, 2017). It is most densely found in
the large intestine. Without regulation of these bacteria, problems can arise, such as difficulty properly
digesting dairy (Williams, n.d.). This is why it is common to be prescribed probiotic supplements after
taking antibiotics, which can kill off this helpful bacteria (Health and Science Pipeline Initiative, n.d.).
Another bacteria, still important but found in less quantity, is Escherichia coli, commonly referred to
as E. coli. It is of the Escherichia species and the Gram negative species (UWLAX , n.d.). Its
functionality in the human body is essential for the absorption of vitamins in the large intestine such

On November 24th, 1859, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the
Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life by Charles Darwin (renamed On the Origin of
Species 13 years later) was published in London, England. In it, Charles Darwin specified his
observations and gave his insight on what he thought caused evolution. He called it natural selection.
Before this, nearly everyone believed that a single God created every living organism that none of
them had changed a bit since then. Charles Darwin s On the Origin of Species influenced the minds of
1859 and impacted all of science. Charles Darwin was born to Robert Darwin and Susannah

It was on these islands that Darwin noted that various birds, though the same species, differed based
on the different islands they resided on, most notably the mockingbird and finch. It was here that
Darwin first theorized about whether or not species could change over time, based on their location.
Could a species change because of the land, the climate, all of the things that can affect a species? On
the Origin of Species was a breakthrough at the time. It contained radical ideas that many people
weren t prepared to accept, the most widely known being that humans evolved from apes. There are
many important ideas contained within Darwin s book. The first and foremost being: Darwin s belief
that every species, living and extinct, originated from one individual species. Following this belief,
Darwin concluded that organisms within a populace must compete for resources to survive. Also, the
organisms within those individual populations will then show deviations, such as differently shaped
beaks for different food sources. With these variations comes the inevitable fact that certain organisms
will gain enhancements that will improve its ability to compete for resources or survive adversity.
Considering this, it is no surprise that Darwin also theorized that those organisms with beneficial
variations were more likely to survive and pass their characteristics

Comparative Essay of Goold and Polanski Macbeth Films
Macbeth, like any play, is open to interpretation by the performers. Each separate performance is
unique. The different stylistic choices made in performances of the play change the way that viewers
see the characters and events. This means that while the events of the Goold and Polanski films are the
same, they tell us slightly different stories. It is interesting to look at the two films in terms of their
faithfulness to, and their divergences from the original text, and the effects that these choices have on
their viewers.
The first clear point of interpretation is the setting of the play. Polanski chose to remain true to the
play s original setting, in 11th century Scotland. The costumes, behavior of the characters, and sets
depict ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the Polanski film, Macbeth himself is the determined, ambitious driving force behind the events
that take place, with Lady Macbeth there mainly to support him.
The depictions of the witches were also quite dissimilar. Polanski s depiction of the witches as hideous
crones is true to Elizabethan society s idea of them, and therefore very similar to how they would have
appeared in performances during Shakespeare s time. To a modern audience, however, warty, cackling
witches are borderline ridiculous. Goold chose to modernize the witches as much as he did the rest of
the play, and have the witches be disguised as nurses, which allowed them to plausibly be near the
other characters, and allowed him to combine a couple of scenes into one. Goold clearly made an
effort for his witches to be genuinely alarming for even a modern, horror movie accustomed audience,
and succeeded. The alien nature of the witches was made clear by both films.
As a play, Macbeth is intended to be interpreted differently by different directors, which allows each
performance to be unique. Polanski used the play s original setting, while Goold placed the story in
the 20th century. The cast of the Goold film stayed closer to how the characters were written by
Shakespeare, while Polanski s cast portayed the main characters slightly differently, with more
emphasis given to Macbeth than Lady Macbeth. Polanski s witches were

International Roughness Index (IRI) Introduction
The international roughness index (IRI) was developed by the World Bank in the 1980s (UMTRI,
1998). IRI is used to define a characteristic of the longitudinal profile of a traveled wheel track and
constitutes a standardized roughness measurement. The IRI is based on the average rectified slope
(ARS), which is a filtered ratio of a standard vehicle s accumulated suspension motion (in mm, inches,
etc.) divided by the distance traveled by the vehicle during the measurement (km, mi, etc.). Figure
bellow shows the IRI scale.
Next picture shows the relation of pavement serviceability related to time and IRI.

Third Man Corruption
The Film Noir, The Third Man , showed the evident effect that World War 2 had on people. Since this
film was produced in 1949, after World War 2, it reflected the social fears and cultural changes that
have plagued people during post war. Before the war, there was the ideology of the strong American
family. This family portrayed strong values such as happiness, hardworking, and optimism. However
during post war, there was a shade of darkness as fear, greed and evil lurking. The Third Man
portrayed the social, economic and moral corruption which reflects off the social evils during the post
war era. One example of economic corruption is shown in the Ferris Wheel Scene. In this scene, we

Their moral corruption relates back to the measures that spies had to take and the fear they installed
during the post war era/Cold War. Limes faked his own death and kills someone else to take his place.
His death caused emotional distress for people that care about him. His death caused people like
Holly, to go around the town trying to solve his murder case while leaving his mistress, Anna to be
heart broken. Limes also continues to puts innocent children into hospitals because of his diluted
penicillin. This relates back to the moral corruption of both CIA and KGB spies. Both parties were
performing acts of espionage to gather intel on each other. Although these spies weren t selling on the
black market, they were putting their families under emotional distress as well as possibly tearing
families apart. Despite Lime s lack of family members shown in the film, Anna and Holly were the
closest he had to family. Additionally, the paranoia of spies possibly being your next door neighbor,
installed fear into normal citizens. Knowing that spies were living among other citizens caused panic
and anxiety to many. Reciprocal to the movie, we see the discomfort and anxiety that Limes have
caused Holly. Holly runs all over the city, trying to piece together his friends death while clearing

Descartes Claim Of The Universe
How Fix a Universe That is Nothing but Paradoxes
Descartes claim of I think, therefore I am , is an attempt to establish a firm foundation for the
understanding of the universe and explores the ideas of the self and what we can know to be real.
However, there is one major flaw in this approach. That flaw is how we are to create this foundation
when before it we had nothing and the paradoxes in the creating definitions of words.
His goal is to better understand what he is in order to reestablish the foundations of his understanding
of the world around him. This is a normal human behavior to explore the unknown or not well
understood. Any explorer that sails the ocean in search of new land may know what land is but new
land that was unknown to him/her is a satisfying development in the person s understanding of
everything that is real. The modern practice of this behavior includes, but not limited to, an
astronomer using space telescopes to look deep into space where light from an ancient universe is
arriving at earth or an experimental physicist when smashing particles together in hopes to find new
and smaller part that makes up the fundamental building blocks of the universe. Descartes hopes to
use his logical process to reveal the fundamental building blocks of the universe that humans can exist
in. He also wants to create a fundamental understanding of the way to observe the universe that we
can perceive with the limited senses that we have. He uses this logical

Welfare Definition Of Economics By Alfred Marshall
WELFARE DEFINITION OF ECONOMICS
About the Author: Alfred Marshall (26th July 1842 13th July 1924)
The Welfare Definition of the subject of economics was put forward by the pioneer neoclassical
economist from England, Dr. Alfred Marshall, in his book Principles of Economics published in 1890.
Marshall, who was born in the London suburb of Clapham, was educated at Merchant s Taylor School.
He showed tremendous mathematical aptitude and participated in Cambridge University s most
revered degree competition Mathematical Tripos, where he secured the second rank, bettered only by
Lord Rayleigh. This secured a position of fellow in St. John s University, Cambridge and along with
mathematics, he got himself involved rigorously in the study of philosophical foundations and moral
basis of human behaviour and social organisation. He became a lecturer of Moral Sciences at St. John
s in 1868, with a specialisation in Political Economy , as Economics was then called. He henceforth
worked tirelessly in transforming the subject into a more logical and scientific one. Marshall met
Mary Paley, a student in the informal lectures for women by the Cambridge University and taught her
Political Economy. In 1877, they decided to get married and this forced Marshall to leave his position
in Cambridge due to the celibacy rule in place. He joined as the first Principal at University College,
Bristol; which later came

The Greenhouse Effect Essay
Much like the glass of a greenhouse, gases in our atmosphere sustain life on Earth by trapping the sun
s heat. The Earth s atmosphere contains several different gases that act like a blanket, keeping the
Earth warm. Water vapour and some trace gases like CO2, CH4 (methane), O3 (ozone), N2O (nitrous
oxide), are IR active , i.e. they absorb heat energy, and stop the warmth from escaping into space.
Without the entrapment of heat, the earth s mean temperature would be 180 C and life, as we know it
today, would not be possible. These gases are present in the atmosphere in tiny quantities compared to
the amounts of oxygen and nitrogen. But even a small change in the concentration of these gases may
create an effect that could change our ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Any factor that alters the amount of radiation received from the sun or heat lost to space may
influence the climate. Therefore, any enhancement of the Greenhouse effect is a cause for concern.
Besides fluctuations of solar radiation due to the earth orbiting around the sun, human activities
influence the number of greenhouse gases. In fact, since the beginning of the industrial revolution,
human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation and agriculture have caused the
concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to increase substantially. A marked rise in the
global temperature has been related to these human activities and CO2 emissions, and this temperature
rise is believed to be the result of an enhancement of the natural Greenhouse effect. And as a result,
global warming arises. This awareness has led many researchers to investigate possible causes and
effects of this temperature rise. However, as much knowledge about the climate system is lacking,
numerous researches on that issue have led to a great deal of debate. At the moment, the way the
climate system will respond to these human activities is difficult to predict, for too many processes are
not understood well enough. One absolute reality though is the fact that the global climate system will
respond to increasing temperatures. Moreover, this response could have irreversible consequences for
the habitability

Power And Power In Arthur Miller s The Crucible
Sometimes people can get lost in their ability to control others, your mom yelling at you to take out
the trash or maybe you pinning your younger sibling down in a wrestling match. It happens to us all,
even if you do not realize. It all comes with our ingrained desire for this thing we call power. This
desire plagues every society, those of the past and present. For example, in the 1960s an author named
Arthur Miller saw his society falling victim to this plague, so he wrote a play. Miller shows us
throughout The Crucible that power and the desire for it is a disease that spreads in communities and
cripples them, we see this through the actions of Abigail, Danforth, and Parris. Parris is a great
example of a ground zero patient, from the start of the play we see him claw for more and more
political and material power. Miller wastes no time showing Parris concern with his power and how
people perceive it. But if you trafficked with the spirits in the forest I must know it now, for surely my
enemies will, and they will ruin me with it (Miller 10). Here we see Parris worrying about his ego
while his daughter is lying ill on the bed next to him. This theme continues throughout the play and
becomes worse as we get to know him more. His concern with ego goes hand in hand with our idea of
power; with a tainted ego he will lose his power. His constant concern with these illusory concepts he
loses his path and begins to lead others down it, Like Danforth. Danforth

The Duchess Of Malfi And The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
Revolutionary Heroines of 1623 and 2005: The Duchess of Malfi and Lisbeth Salander
John Webster s play The Duchess of Malfi observes Renaissance beliefs about women, as well as the
treatment of women, through the corrupt characters of Ferdinand and The Cardinal. As was custom,
the men are in control of their sister, The Duchess, because of their gender. Stieg Larsson s The Girl
with the Dragon Tattoo is set in twenty first century Sweden, but it shares the central theme of men
wanting to possess and control women. However, in both works the female leads, The Duchess and
Lisbeth Salander, are the heroines, as they possess the stereotypically masculine qualities that their
male competitors and oppressors seem to lack. Throughout Webster s play and Larsson s novel, the
women display solidarity, bravery, and assertiveness. Salander and the Duchess live how they please,
with no fear of retaliation from the patriarchy. In the face of death, The Duchess courageously accepts
her fate instead of begging for mercy, and when a victim or witness of violence, Salander takes action
to ensure that justice is served, rather than shrinking away in fear. The Duchess and Lisbeth Salander

  • 2. Pholx Noctunix Research Paper Pholx noctunix grows in the tundra ecosystem. The only biotic factor that impacts Pholx noctunix is the caterpillars that like to feed on its leaves, this has caused it to adapt by developing thorns along the stem to prevent caterpillars from being able to reach the leaves. The majority of the factors that affect plants that grow in the tundra are abiotic, including: Fluctuating temperatures, with an average winter temperature of 34˚C and average summer temperatures of between 3 12˚C (Ucmp.berkeley.edu, 2004). Fluctuating light intensity. During winter, a layer of snow covers the ground, causing less light to reaches the plants. During summer, there is a large amount of sunlight reaching the plants. • 3. Summary Of A Sunrise On The Veld And At The Pitt Rivers The short stories, A Sunrise on the Veld and At the Pitt Rivers , have nothing in common if you analyze them on a shallow literature level. A Sunrise on the Veld by Doris Lessing, highlights some of the reasons why life is so valuable. Lessing hints her readers that this short story is set somewhere in the desert by, ... the flesh of his soles contracted on the chilled earth, and his legs began to ache with cold... He slung the shoes over his shoulder... they would be necessary when the ground became too hot to bear, (Lessing, pg. 1212). Most deserts get heated by the sun by day, but loses the heat at night. The boy starts hunting, at first, but then is distracted by a wounded buck. Seeing this buck suffer, depicts him, especially sad. A boy is also the protagonist in At the Pitt Rivers by Penelope Lively. This boy spends his time in a museum, observing people and writing poems as the time passes. He keeps track of a couple he sees at the museum. The couple catches his attention because they are not his ideal of what a couple should look like. If a kindergartener reads these two short stories, he/she would find nothing in common with the stories. But, if the reader has the ability to analyze the text in more depth, he/she would find that they are more similar than the kindergartener would think. As an advanced reader, a comparison that is prevalent in both stories is, society s thinking of the ideal can be challenged by with what you see. In A Sunrise on the ... • 4. Kaiser Wilhelm And Otto Von Bismarck s Policies Differed Alexa Rial Mr. LeRoy Honors U.S History 4A 16 October 2015 World War I Essay Questions 1. Both Kaiser Wilhelm and Otto Von Bismarck s policies differed. In reality, Kaiser based his ideas and was influenced off of Bismarck. Wilhelm II was mostly concerned with the power of the German Navy. He consistently tried to get the best of the best for the navy and always got the latest weapons for them. Also, he attempted to make Germany the predominant world power. His aim to get allies for Germany was a complete failure. When Kaiser tried to reach out and get help and support from Britain, he had failed once again. That was due to the fact that he tried already to get colonies in Africa, The Pacific, and China. At his fault, we were left in isolation and had Austria Hungary as our only ally. On the other hand, Bismarck s efforts into getting alliances were much more contributive. • 6. Disadvantages Of Intelligence Led Policing In preparation for my debate on the topics of intelligence led policing and Compstat policing, I have discovered the many advantages and disadvantages of using intelligence led policing and Compstat policing. According to Carter Carter (2009), intelligence led policing is the collection of and analysis of data relating to crime, used by law enforcement in developing tactical responses to threats and/or strategic planning related to emerging changing threats (p. 317). When applied correctly, intelligence led policing is a tool used for information sharing in identifying threats and developing responses to prevent those threats from reaching fruition (Carter, 2011). One of the advantages of using intelligence led policing is its incorporation of data analysts. The role of the data analyst in the context of intelligence led policing allows them to take specially trained analysts to take raw data from information found in reports and translate it into useful information for the officers, allowing the police to deploy resources more effectively and efficiently (Griffiths, 2016). Another advantage is its application through preventative and predictive policing (proactive policing), in which law enforcement take data and identify crucial variables such as terrorism or the emergence of criminal organizations, in hopes of stopping the problem at its roots (Carter, 2011). Terrorism is especially important and emphasized after the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Centers in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The reason I say adults over the different generations is that the time in one s life where their teeth start falling out or are removed is different for everyone. Some people with false teeth may continue to use this product, although there are special products used to clean dentures that are more effective. Adults who want whiter teeth without the damaging effects of a whitening toothpaste would use this product. Also, there has been a trend in toothpastes that benefit the enamel, causing Crest to follow the trend by introducing a toothpaste that does not damage or cause sensitivity to the teeth. Teens and tweens may begin using the toothpaste when their parent buys it or they may experiment with toothpastes to find something they like over what their parents buy. Generally, grown children buy the same or opposite products as their parents, so depending on the child either case is possible. This product is not gender specific, but uses the want of both genders to look appealing and be healthy. Ethnicity and lifestyle do not determine whether a person will buy this product either, although the flavor may be more appealing to people with certain cultural backgrounds. • 18. Resilience Theory Applied For A Chance Essay Resilience Theory Applied to A Chance in the World Anthony Shohan Bridgewater State University Resilience, in its simplest form, is the ability for someone or something to recover after an action has occurred against them or it, whether it be an emotional and/or physical action (Earvolino Ramirez 2007; Dyer McGuinness 1996). Resilience is defined, more directly, as the positive end of the distribution of developmental outcomes among individuals at high risk (Luthar et al., 2000 pg. 3). When resilience is dovetailed with the ideals of social work or psychology, resilience can be the determining factor in the future of an individual. In the realm of social work, resilience theory can be applied to individuals as a way to formulate whether or not that individual was or will be successful in life. Resilience theory focuses on the strengths of individuals. Like most theories used in social work and psychology, there are both the strengths of the theories as well as the limitations of the theories. Resilience theory cannot escape this trend. There are numerous strengths and, in contrast, limitations with resilience theory. Luthar, Cicchetti, and Becker (2000) identify a limitation of resilience theory with the idea that even though a child is thriving in their current time, as time goes on, their ability to continue adapting decreases. His lips are the pilgrims that are seeking the holy place, which, in this particular case, is Juliet s lips. In saying this, Romeo is almost placing Juliet on some sort of religious pedestal, implying that she has a God like power and control over him, much like God would to a pilgrim. His religious references show the severity of their love and Shakespeare may have done it as it helps create an escape from their damnation according to Christian values by creating the religion of love. Even though some Elizabethan audience members may find it difficult to relate to the character of Romeo due to his fickle nature towards love, they would understand his feelings through religion. This is because during Shakespeare s time relgion was thriving so the audience may possibly understand how important Juliet is to Romeo by how important religion is to them. As for the inward shipment i.e. shipment from any port outside the contracting states to any port in the contracting states, apparently, the Hague Rules do not apply but rather the law of the country from where the goods were shipped would be the applicable law. On the other hand the Hamburg rules clearly indicating the contract in terms of parties .The Hamburg rules covers all contracts for the carriage of the sea and applicable to waybills, consignment notes, etc. The monopoly or unilateral action can lead to too extreme a use of exception as did in the bill of lading, which led to the creation of Hague Visby rules. On the Origin of Species by Charles Darwin On November 24th, 1859, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life by Charles Darwin (renamed On the Origin of Species 13 years later) was published in London, England. In it, Charles Darwin specified his observations and gave his insight on what he thought caused evolution. He called it natural selection. Before this, nearly everyone believed that a single God created every living organism that none of them had changed a bit since then. Charles Darwin s On the Origin of Species influenced the minds of 1859 and impacted all of science. Charles Darwin was born to Robert Darwin and Susannah Wedgwood on February 12, 1809. It was on these islands that Darwin noted that various birds, though the same species, differed based on the different islands they resided on, most notably the mockingbird and finch. It was here that Darwin first theorized about whether or not species could change over time, based on their location. Could a species change because of the land, the climate, all of the things that can affect a species? On the Origin of Species was a breakthrough at the time. It contained radical ideas that many people weren t prepared to accept, the most widely known being that humans evolved from apes. There are many important ideas contained within Darwin s book. The first and foremost being: Darwin s belief that every species, living and extinct, originated from one individual species. Following this belief, Darwin concluded that organisms within a populace must compete for resources to survive. Also, the organisms within those individual populations will then show deviations, such as differently shaped beaks for different food sources. With these variations comes the inevitable fact that certain organisms will gain enhancements that will improve its ability to compete for resources or survive adversity. Considering this, it is no surprise that Darwin also theorized that those organisms with beneficial variations were more likely to survive and pass their characteristics ... The different stylistic choices made in performances of the play change the way that viewers see the characters and events. This means that while the events of the Goold and Polanski films are the same, they tell us slightly different stories. It is interesting to look at the two films in terms of their faithfulness to, and their divergences from the original text, and the effects that these choices have on their viewers. The first clear point of interpretation is the setting of the play. Polanski chose to remain true to the play s original setting, in 11th century Scotland. In the Polanski film, Macbeth himself is the determined, ambitious driving force behind the events that take place, with Lady Macbeth there mainly to support him. The depictions of the witches were also quite dissimilar. Polanski s depiction of the witches as hideous crones is true to Elizabethan society s idea of them, and therefore very similar to how they would have appeared in performances during Shakespeare s time. To a modern audience, however, warty, cackling witches are borderline ridiculous. Goold chose to modernize the witches as much as he did the rest of the play, and have the witches be disguised as nurses, which allowed them to plausibly be near the other characters, and allowed him to combine a couple of scenes into one. Goold clearly made an effort for his witches to be genuinely alarming for even a modern, horror movie accustomed audience, and succeeded. The alien nature of the witches was made clear by both films. As a play, Macbeth is intended to be interpreted differently by different directors, which allows each performance to be unique. Polanski used the play s original setting, while Goold placed the story in the 20th century. The cast of the Goold film stayed closer to how the characters were written by Shakespeare, while Polanski s cast portayed the main characters slightly differently, with more emphasis given to Macbeth than Lady Macbeth. Since this film was produced in 1949, after World War 2, it reflected the social fears and cultural changes that have plagued people during post war. Before the war, there was the ideology of the strong American family. This family portrayed strong values such as happiness, hardworking, and optimism. However during post war, there was a shade of darkness as fear, greed and evil lurking. In the 1950s, the Soviet Union and the United States developed hydrogen bombs, also thermonuclear weapons that were similarly based on nuclear fission. These had an explosive capability that is similar to twenty million tons and more of TNT. An analysis of the medical consequences of these new weapons by medical organizations like the Physicians for Social Responsibility demonstrated that using them would cause millions of catastrophic global health problems similar to the worldwide radioactive fallout that caused numerous casualties from cancer deaths, as well as respiratory tract infections from the massive clouds of smoke that hang in the air. His goal is to better understand what he is in order to reestablish the foundations of his understanding of the world around him. This is a normal human behavior to explore the unknown or not well understood. The modern practice of this behavior includes, but not limited to, an astronomer using space telescopes to look deep into space where light from an ancient universe is arriving at earth or an experimental physicist when smashing particles together in hopes to find new and smaller part that makes up the fundamental building blocks of the universe. Marshall, who was born in the London suburb of Clapham, was educated at Merchant s Taylor School. He showed tremendous mathematical aptitude and participated in Cambridge University s most revered degree competition Mathematical Tripos, where he secured the second rank, bettered only by Lord Rayleigh. This secured a position of fellow in St. John s University, Cambridge and along with mathematics, he got himself involved rigorously in the study of philosophical foundations and moral basis of human behaviour and social organisation. He became a lecturer of Moral Sciences at St. John s in 1868, with a specialisation in Political Economy , as Economics was then called. • 34. The Greenhouse Effect Essay Much like the glass of a greenhouse, gases in our atmosphere sustain life on Earth by trapping the sun s heat. The Earth s atmosphere contains several different gases that act like a blanket, keeping the Earth warm. Water vapour and some trace gases like CO2, CH4 (methane), O3 (ozone), N2O (nitrous oxide), are IR active , i.e. they absorb heat energy, and stop the warmth from escaping into space. Without the entrapment of heat, the earth s mean temperature would be 180 C and life, as we know it today, would not be possible. These gases are present in the atmosphere in tiny quantities compared to the amounts of oxygen and nitrogen. But even a small change in the concentration of these gases may create an effect that could change our ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Any factor that alters the amount of radiation received from the sun or heat lost to space may influence the climate. Therefore, any enhancement of the Greenhouse effect is a cause for concern. Besides fluctuations of solar radiation due to the earth orbiting around the sun, human activities influence the number of greenhouse gases. In fact, since the beginning of the industrial revolution, human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation and agriculture have caused the concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to increase substantially. A marked rise in the global temperature has been related to these human activities and CO2 emissions, and this temperature rise is believed to be the result of an enhancement of the natural Greenhouse effect. And as a result, global warming arises. This awareness has led many researchers to investigate possible causes and effects of this temperature rise. However, as much knowledge about the climate system is lacking, numerous researches on that issue have led to a great deal of debate. At the moment, the way the climate system will respond to these human activities is difficult to predict, for too many processes are not understood well enough. One absolute reality though is the fact that the global climate system will respond to increasing temperatures. Moreover, this response could have irreversible consequences for the habitability ... Power And Power In Arthur Miller s The Crucible Sometimes people can get lost in their ability to control others, your mom yelling at you to take out the trash or maybe you pinning your younger sibling down in a wrestling match. It happens to us all, even if you do not realize. It all comes with our ingrained desire for this thing we call power. This desire plagues every society, those of the past and present. For example, in the 1960s an author named Arthur Miller saw his society falling victim to this plague, so he wrote a play. Miller shows us throughout The Crucible that power and the desire for it is a disease that spreads in communities and cripples them, we see this through the actions of Abigail, Danforth, and Parris. Parris is a great example of a ground zero patient, from the start of the play we see him claw for more and more political and material power. Miller wastes no time showing Parris concern with his power and how people perceive it. But if you trafficked with the spirits in the forest I must know it now, for surely my enemies will, and they will ruin me with it (Miller 10). Here we see Parris worrying about his ego while his daughter is lying ill on the bed next to him. This theme continues throughout the play and becomes worse as we get to know him more. His concern with ego goes hand in hand with our idea of power; with a tainted ego he will lose his power. His constant concern with these illusory concepts he loses his path and begins to lead others down it, Like Danforth. Danforth ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Duchess Of Malfi And The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Revolutionary Heroines of 1623 and 2005: The Duchess of Malfi and Lisbeth Salander John Webster s play The Duchess of Malfi observes Renaissance beliefs about women, as well as the treatment of women, through the corrupt characters of Ferdinand and The Cardinal. As was custom, the men are in control of their sister, The Duchess, because of their gender. Stieg Larsson s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is set in twenty first century Sweden, but it shares the central theme of men wanting to possess and control women. However, in both works the female leads, The Duchess and Lisbeth Salander, are the heroines, as they possess the stereotypically masculine qualities that their male competitors and oppressors seem to lack. Throughout Webster s play and Larsson s novel, the women display solidarity, bravery, and assertiveness. Salander and the Duchess live how they please, with no fear of retaliation from the patriarchy.
