`` Hills Like White Elephants `` By Ernest Hemingway
In his short story Hills like White Elephants, Ernest Hemingway uses symbolism and landscape subtly
but effectively to emphasize the tension between the main characters. The reader is asked to
extrapolate much of the information in an indirect fashion. The reader must look into the symbolism
and imagery used alongside the words the characters share and don t share. The natural landscape
covers almost the entire story, offering vivid images that contain a large amount of interpretive insight
into the story. The setting puts the couple at a crossroads, a stopping place in their journey through not
just Spain, but through their lives as well. Though the exact location of the train station is not given, it
is often thought to be in Zaragoza, Spain. The train station is a midpoint between their past time
together and the future time that they will move toward when they leave on a train. Train stations,
airports, bus stations, and ports give us a sense of transition, of being between worlds, and between
experiences. Placing the stage for the drama in such a locale really grabs the reader s attention and
drives further symbolism in the story. Joseph Urgo points this out in his writing quite well by stating
the junction where the train will stop in the story is not just the meeting of the Barcelona and Madrid
lines, but the clash of male and female sources of power and authority. (Urgo 36)
Hemingway stresses a few main elements of the story s setting. The oppressive heat,

Essay about The Controversy Over the Electoral College...
The Controversy Over the Electoral College System
A number of Americans fail to realize that when they vote they are not voting for the president and
vice president directly, but for electors who then cast their ballots in the Electoral College. Until the
recent battle between Gov. George W. Bush and Vice president Al Gore for the presidency, this new
generation of American voters has never witnessed a controversial election. Historically, there have
been problematic elections allowing voters to question this system. The Electoral College is now a
process open to criticism and debate, specifically because many do not understand its origin or
purpose today. On November 7, 2000, Election Day, I was excited to become an official voter. ...

Yet in the morning, I learn that Florida is again announced too close to call because by Florida law, the
percentage difference between the candidates was so marginal, a recount was necessary. Is this
possible to have such a close race and no president announced on Election Day? Because Al Gore had
a slim lead in the popular vote, the decision of which candidate receives the electoral votes in Florida
seemed irrelevant to the people. However, there have been many presidents who have merely won the
plurality vote, meaning they have not received a majority of the popular vote, but electoral votes,
therefore becoming minority presidents. John Quincy Adams, with 30.92 percent of the popular vote
defeated Andrew Jackson in 1824, which was decided by a contingency election in the House of
Representatives. Even Abraham Lincoln became a minority president in the election of 1860. He
polled the lowest popular vote percentage in the history of the presidency. In 1876, Rutherford B.
Hayes was elected with 47.95 percent of the popular vote and 185 electoral votes, compared to Tilden
who held 50.97 percent and 184. Minority presidents also include: Woodrow Wilson, Harry S.
Truman, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon(1968), and Bill ClintonHowever, the election of 1888 is
similar to our current situation. Benjamin Harrison won the election against Cleveland in which no
candidate polled a majority, yet Cleveland beat him in the

Comparing Poe’s Fall of the House of Usher and Taylor’s...
Edgar Allan Poe s The Fall of the House of Usher and Peter Taylor s Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time
Various authors develop their stories using gothic themes and characterizations of this type to lay the
foundation for their desired reader response. Although Edgar Allan Poe s The Fall of the House of
Usher and Peter Taylor s Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time are two completely different narratives, both
of these stories share a commonality of gothic text representations. The stories take slightly different
paths, with Poe s signifying traditional gothic literature and Taylor approaching his story in a more
contemporary manner. Gothic texts are typically characterized by a horrifying and haunting mood, in a

Just as in Poe s, this story places significance upon the appearance of the house and its surroundings.
The Dorsets host parties for each generation of children in their neighborhood. Enhancing further the
evidence of gothic style found in Taylor s story, the parents curiosity is overcome by a feeling of
horror concerning the types of events that unfold during those parties. The parties also act as points of
isolation for the children and the Dorsets. Except for the people who attend the party, no one knew the
explanation or the necessity for the annual event. The presence of curiosity and secrecy help to
support the gothic basis for this story. The grotesque and incestuous relationship that the Dorsets
sustain functions as another gothic element in the text. One of the definite obscurities in the Dorsets
house would be the hanging of various pictures, specifically Bronzino s Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time
. It is a tiny color print and described as simply being tacked on the wall, and obviously been torn
from a book or magazine (Taylor, 765). The picture could be interpreted as a family interacting and
behaving immorally, further enhancing the notion that the Dorsets do not just have a sibling
relationship but rather a more intimate connection. This print acted as a focal point of the house and
further detailed the Dorsets incestuous relationship. In the end, the Dorsets are overcome by their

Examples Of Syntax In Mrs Dalloway
Stifled Expression Post Rifle Aggression The syntax of Mrs. Dalloway consists mainly of loose
sentences which progress at an irregular pace. Important information is often merely touched upon,
and then abandoned in favor of an anecdote. The lack of structural variation from the complex multi
clause sentences in pivotal moments of the novel parallels the inability of the characters to express
their socially taboo traits by neglecting to syntactically emphasize their controversial characteristics.
Modern culture is intolerant of homosexuality; consequently, Clarissa Dalloway addresses her
intimate moments with Sally Seton in the same syntax with which she addresses everyday
occurrences. Clarissa remembers what she claims is the most exquisite ... Show more content on

Modern culture holds soldiers to a high standard of emotional fortitude. They are expected to emerge
from war triumphantly and confidently, but this notion is far from reality. Septimus Warren Smith is a
shell shocked veteran, suffering from post war thunder claps of fear, who criticizes the apathy of
modernist society. He is incapable of communicating his troubles to those who are enthralled with
modern culture (87). Lucrezia notes that the English are so silent, however this silence is not defined
as the absence of speech, it refers to the absence of substance (88). The English are capable of speech
and yet incapable of transmitting significance. The loose sentence structure and the rambling form
underline Septimus s inability to efficiently broadcast his thoughts. The repetition of the phrase he
could not remember it, reiterates the inability of Septimus to express his very complex emotions (98).
The war has made him so lost within his own thoughts that he cannot clearly conclude how to begin to
convey the anguish associated with the loss of Evans. The anxiety caused by the lack of catharsis
builds up within Septimus. This intense depth of emotion directly contrasts the shallow understanding
of society. The modern lifestyle and technology consume the common people of London

The Portrayal Analysis Of Know Your Rights By The Clash
Know Your Rights by The Clash is a song that criticizes the oppression that poor and working class
people face. This song takes a sarcastic tone and goes over the three basic rights that everyone has. It
becomes very clear that the rights The Clash references are bogus and part of a rigged system. The
Clash released Know Your Rights in 1982. The 1980 s, in England where this band was based, was a
time of major social and political revolution. The Clash s music reflected this, primarily producing
music about revolution and the working class. The Clash s defining elements were their punk rock,
passionate, and enthused sound. They are now known as one of the founding punk rock legends.
Know Your Rights sound and message went a long way in terms of empowering the audience; young
adults, poor and working class people, revolutionaries. One of the most important steps in advocacy is
telling a story that will resonate with the desired audience. Telling a story can be used across all the
media realms, providing your audience with content that is packed with utility, seeded with
inspiration, and that is honestly empathetic, is what draws an audience then, but also incites them to
action (Hadley Chapman 9). Know Your Rights tells the story of how people of traditionally view
lesser socioeconomic classes rights are riddled with injustice and oppressive stipulations. A few

The similarity is notes payable also have fixed maturity dates and carry either a stated or implicit
interest rate (Kieso, Weygandt, amp; Warfield, 2007, p. 685). The difference is notes payable are not
easily tradable. A company reports notes payable in a similar fashion as it does bonds. In reporting a
note payable a company records the note at its face value of its future interest and principal cash
flows. The company amortizes any discount or premium of a note over its life. If a note has no bearing
interest rate the company should report the difference between the face value and the cash received as
a discount on the note. This amount one amortizes over the life of the note to interest expense.
Capital Leases
A company may use capital leases to finance its acquisition of capital assets. In lease financing a
company must met the criteria of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) on capital leases.
In this a company must record both a liability, and a related asset on its balance sheet. In reporting
capital lease a company reports the lease at its present value of the minimum lease payments. The
company allocates these lease payments using the effective interest method to interest expense. This
allocation using the effective interest method reduces the lease liability of the company.
A company regardless of the type of liability it has must report the interest rate, maturity date, current
interest expense, and future

Columbus may have first left his mark on the Americas in the 15th century, but the United States didn
t establish a federal holiday in his honor until 1937 (Dan Fitcher). Commissioned by Spanish king
Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to explore Asia, Columbus instead sailed to the new world in 1492 (Dan
Fitcher). He first come ashore in the Bahamas later making his way to Cuba and the island of
Hispaniola (now home of Haiti and the Dominican Republic). Believing that he had located China and

Columbus discovered nothing, native populations were living in the Americas long before European
explorers made their first trips across the Atlantic. And once there, Columbus wasn t exactly kind to
his new neighbors. On his very first day in the New World, Columbus took six natives as slaves.
Along with pressing thousands of more natives into forced labor, and killing anyone who disagreed
with him and his methods. Even his own colonists didn t like him, their complaints led him to be
called back by his Spanish royal sponsors in 1500 leading to imprisonment (about news). Some

have been some efforts to get this federal holiday status revoked, and although yet it is not, many just
simply ignore the holiday entirely. As this being as it is, some people may argue still that Columbus

explorer who founded the first permanent European settlement in the New World, but was he the first?
Some may also say that the arrival of Columbus in 1492 marks the beginning of recorded history in
America making Columbus Day a patriotic holiday. Or others may say that that the

It s Time To Colonize Other Planets
Many space scientists have been theorizing the colonization of Earth s Moon, Mars, and some of the
farther planet s moons like one of Jupiter s moons, Titan. People on Earth have been consuming an
excessive amount each year, which is more than what our planet can handle. Plus, our population is
only bound to grow, but Earth will unable to be as resourceful as it is now for future generations. Not
only is that a problem, but climate change is another large factor in the move from Earth to Mars or
the Moon. Scientists from NASA, European Space Agency, SpaceX, and Boeing space exploration
companies have been discovering numerous possibilities on how we can colonize other planets in our
solar system. Many of these ideas are focused around how we get out of our atmosphere, ways to
make the travel in a shorter time, and what kinds of people they d be sending up into space. Some

Colonizing other planets and moons could be beneficial to the world because it gives us a new future
and ensures a life for humans if anything happened to Earth, People argue that it is expensive and hard
to do, however after a lot of analyzing from space travel scientists, it is more simple and less
expensive than what critics claim.
Colonizing the moon would be beneficial because it could be cheap and done quicker compared to the
relative benefits to humanity. Fecht writes, Returning humans to the moon could cost 90 percent less
than expected, bringing estimated costs down from $100 billion to $10 billion (Fecht).

Effective Communication In Communication
Avoid Interrupting
Resist the urge to finish sentences and/or interrupt the person speaking. This can come across as rude
and disrespectful.
This is especially important for an interview because you are trying to act as the best candidate for the
job and first impressions are crucial. You don t want your future boss to think of you as rude or
disrespectful.
Facial Expressions
Facial expressions come a long way when it comes to communicating. They show emotions and
express how you are feeling. If you are disgusted or mad, that will show through your facial
expressions. You want to smile while someone is speaking to you, and keep a positive expression on
your face. If you are the one speaking, keep your chin up and continue to keep that smile on your face
to show that you are interested in what you are saying and what is being said to you.
This is important in all cases of communication, but for an interview you want to look as if you are
interested in what is going on and being said. If you show no interest in your face, that will say a lot
about what the interviewer thinks of you and your passion for the job.
Eye Contact
Always maintain eye contact when speaking and being spoken to. This shows a lot of respect for the
person talking to you and it shows that you are interested. You don t want to be looking all around the
room when someone is speaking to you because it gives very strong signals that you are not interested
and not paying attention to what the person is

Essay On Earth Day
Earth Day

2020 marks for the 50th anniversary of the first Earth Day, in that year the main focus will be to end
plastic pollution (Earth Day). The first Earth Day was on April 22, the 1970s all throughout the U.S.
Know it s a global event that people from all over the world celebrated. Before the movement started
in the 1970 s, a great oil spill happened that Santa Barbara had in California, 1969. Thus, the oil spill
encouraged Senator Gaylord Nelson of having a day to focus on helping the environment and teach
the public of natural disasters (History of earth day, 2017). Millions of people went to the street to
protest for the negative impacts of more than a hundred years of industrial development. The natural
environment has been on a road of destruction ever since the industrial revolution. In addition, humans
have been overwhelmed with gaining wealth that they have ignored the environmental needs for many
years. It can be said that this movement has been a great success in protecting the environment. There
are three main reasons why this movement is successful: The first, is the strong focus of the
movement, which promotes public awareness of pollution problems, the second, is all the positive
influence the main media has have to the movement and lastly, is the overall knowledge that people
receive after participating in an earth day activity. First, Gaylord Nelson wanted there to be a

Direct Analysis Of Construction Delays
The parameters of measurement of success of any project time, cost, safety, quality and customer
satisfaction can be severely affected by construction delays (Shujaa Safdar Gardezi, 2013). This study
investigates various factors affecting the timeline of the schedule by various participants in the project,
followed by mathematical analysis to propose that the major reasons for delays are the domestic issues
of the country.
2.1 Current techniques for the analysis of delays Following are three different modes of application of
delay analysis techniques based on their simulations with fundamental schedules:
1. Direct Analysis
Direct analysis involves examining the available schedule information without doing any simulations
and modifications. Therefore, it is relatively simple, easy, less time consuming and a lot less expensive
to perform.
2. Additive Analysis
In this methodology, the delays are added to the schedule as individual activities to simulate the actual
scenario of occurrence and reflect the effects of the delays on the as planned schedule. The additions
of the delays can be performed individually knowns as single stage analysis as well as in multiple
schedules also known as multi stage analysis (Trauner, 1990). Some of the examples of additive
analysis are time impact analysis, impacted as planned, window analysis and as planned but for.
3. Subtractive Analysis
In this analysis, modifications and simulations are carried out on the as built schedules in a backward

Political And Political Politics Of The Twentieth Century
What is the history of political cartooning?
The history of political cartooning is used for social and political messages which goes back to the
eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in America with Benjamin Franklin s Join or Die , which depicts a
snake whose severed parts represent the colonies and unless put together are sure to perish. Since
Benjamin Franklin started political cartooning back in the eighteenth century, people have started
using their artistic skills to attack, argue and add their opinions on the most important political issues
of the day. Political cartoons were often posted in the newspapers, posted on walls or passed from

Although there were four New England colonies, Benjamin Franklin gathered into one category to
stress the need for the colonial unity. At the time of the cartoon being made, the colonists firmly
debated making west of the Appalachian Mountains bigger and fighting the French and the Indians,
which were their allies.
As publisher and printer, Benjamin Franklin drafted several cartoons that persuaded colonists to rebel
against England. Join or Die appeared alongside Benjamin Franklin s editorial about the disunited
state of the colonies and that means to unite or to be attacked by French and Indian allies. Ahead of
time, Benjamin Franklin knew that in order to convince the colonists, he first had to convince the
public. Straight forward and powerful images, followed by a clear and expressive prose has the power
to create conversation among the populations. With drawing the cartoon, Benjamin Franklin voiced a
strong opinion in a keen, potent and sophisticated way. The second American cartoonist was not as
famous as Benjamin Franklin was in American history, his name was Paul Revere. Paul Revere was a
silversmith and an engraver who created incendiary cartoons disguised as prints of news events. By
the time of Abraham Lincoln s presidency, more than dozens of cartoons had appeared every year in
magazines, newspapers, penny prints, posters, lithographs and broadsides.

Soccer Accuracy
I have been playing soccer as long as I can remember. Of course, I grew up kicking a ball around with

such as understanding that the ball needed to go in the goal. When reaching my middle school years,
my parents registered me on a soccer team. As usual, It was close to the same running around my
parents had experienced when I was younger. Of course, now I had better knowledge of the game and
knew a bit more about how to play. When I reached my high school years, I noticed I wasn t the best
at the soccer. Now, I see myself improved in accuracy, chemistry, and teamwork. First, my high school
coach stated I needed improvement on my accuracy skills. What my coach meant was that the ball had
to go to where I meant it to go. For example, if I passed the ball to one of my teammates it would have
had to go to him and not the opponent. Back then, I would accidentally embarrass myself by losing the
ball because of a sloppy and weak pass. According to my coach, another area I needed improvement
was my crosses. Although my crosses had power, they had no accuracy whatsoever. I d lose ball

would did was not pass the ball to a teammate who would be at the perfect angle to score. I would

Crooks Dialectical Journal
After reading chapter 3 and 4 of the novel Of Mice and Men, an important quote stood out to me
among the rest of the passage. On page 68, Crooks responded to Lennie s sudden entrance, You go on
get outta my room. I ain t wanted in the bunkhouse, and you ain t wanted in my room. Earlier chapters
describe how he was not allowed to sleep in the bunkhouse with everyone else and had to be separated
in a room by himself. Moreover, it is a rare occasion does people ever visit him, on the exception for
Slim. The obvious interpretation would be the connection it holds to the racism that existed at the
time, but I perceived a deeper connection behind his response.
Although Crooks is a diligent and hardworking stable buck, he experiences loneliness from unequal
treatment by others. Thus, his impetuous response to Lennie came from the hardships he went through
for being the only African American on the ranch. To some extent, people s comments and actions

He resented how he was not allowed to live in the bunkhouse, therefore denying Lennie permission to
enter his room. On the other hand, the book suggest that Lennie just wanted someone to talk to while
George was gone, from which he says, Noting I seen your light. I thought I could jus come in an set.
Crooks then goes on criticizing Lennie how he stinks at playing cards, only because others say he
stunk at playing it. All the injustice Crooks faced is directly affecting upon how he treats others.
Author John Steinbeck does a phenomenal job in conveying important ideas through characters such
as Crooks. This specific quote stood out to me because it reminded me of how this idea can be applied
to problems we as a society are facing today, of one such as bullying. Not only does this quote refer to
discrimination at the time, it also suggest the idea such that people often treat others the way they had

Why Data Mining Is The Extraction Of Knowledge From The...
Data mining is the extraction of knowledge from the various databases that was previously unknown
(Musan Hunyadi, 2010). Data mining consists of using software that conglomerates artificial
intelligence, statistical analysis, and systems management in the act of extracting facts and
understanding from data stored in data warehouses, data marts, and through metadata (Giudici, 2005).
Through algorithms and learning capabilities data mining software can analyze large amounts of data
and give the management team intellectual and effective information to help them form their
decisions. The intention for data mining is to analyze prevailing data and form new truths and new
associations that were unknown prior to the analysis (Musan Hunyadi, ... Show more content on

These visualization tools that are made through the management team s queries, are synthesized with

How Business Intelligence Systems are used Business intelligence systems are the combination of
operational data and analytical tools to aid managers to comprehend the capabilities available in the
firm, the industrial trends, future development in technologies and the market and even their
competitor s actions and the resulting implications (Wang, 2014, p. 1083). There are many ways
managers can use the information a business intelligence system gives them such as understand
customer behavior, analyzing competition understanding investment options, and knowledge
protection.
Customer Behavior The market place, even at a local level, is more competitive then it has been at any
other time in history. Companies must put a major emphasis on gaining customer loyalty and
understanding customer behavior in order to compete in today s market place. Tuta et al. (2014) offer
that intelligent technologies provide new options for manages to understand the market place they
partake in and the competition in that market place. Customer Relationship Management systems are a

Napoleon Bonaparte The Ruthless Conqueror
Napoleon Bonaparte: The Ruthless Conqueror
Napoleon Bonaparte was one of the most successful and controversial military leaders of all time.
Leading France from the years 1799 to 1815, he would establish the French empire, a superpower that
was very similar to that of the Romans. In only sixteen years, Bonaparte came close to conquering all
of Europe, but paid a steep price for his triumph. During his reign, Napoleon Bonaparte An exhibit for
the Metropolitan Museum of Art should portray Napoleon Bonaparte as a ruthless conqueror, not an
enlightened despot, as he enforced legalist like policies, brought on the Napoleonic wars, and was
driven solely by his desire for power. These three factors revealed some of Bonaparte s most

These wars, while trying to establish the French Empire, would significantly weaken France. During
his reign, Bonaparte s main goal was to conquer all of Europe. In order to do so, he recognized that he
needed to defeat France s main threat, Great Britain. In order to weaken them, Bonaparte created the
Continental system. The Continental system was a set of blockades that was designed to cut the
British off from trade with the rest of Europe... (but,) by 1812, it was clear that the Continental system
was not working. (Source E) Underestimating the power of Great Britain s superior navy, Bonaparte
did not realize that the British would able to make their own blockades around France. Napoleon
Bonaparte would blame Russia for his failure, and invade the vast country. This would be the biggest
failure of his career. In an attempt to defeat his new enemy, Bonaparte would march 600,000 thousand
troops into Russia. Even as the weather conditions worsened, Bonaparte decided to always push
further into Russia, trying to conquer Moscow before winter, (Source E) which he knew would cost
him more lives. Eventually losing about 500,000 of these men, he return to France with the remains of
an army. This means that Bonaparte did not consider what the cost of these wars could be. This is
significant, as this is a decision that no enlightened monarch would make. Instead of actually thinking

Comparing Greek And Native American Creation Stories
Firstly, I would like to start off with the beginning where Greek creation stories with other creation
stories all started with chaos (nothing). Gaia and Uranus which were created as Mother Earth and the
Sky. Then Erebus was created in the void. In the Chinese creation story, the passage says all was
chaos, and this chaos was shaped like a hen s egg. Inside the egg were Yin and Yang , which were the
two opposing forces of which the universe was made. However the difference is that Gaia and Uranus
went on to give birth to Rhea and Cronus then they went onto giving birth to gods such as Zeus,
Poseidon and so on... There is a little more difference from the Greek creation stories and the Native
American creation stories, in the native American creation stories, the old man Kumish was created
and he would do all the creation himself rather than in the Greek creation stories; other gods creating
separate things. In Serbian creation stories in the beginning there was nothing but God. He slept and
dreamed for ages and he woke up at last at one point. As he woke up, every glance formed a star and
as he travelled the universe was created.
In the Chinese creation story, the world was created when the chaos (which was the shape of a hen s
egg) was rented apart. The elements were created, the heavier ones sank to form earth and the lighter
ones rose and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

While some might argue that industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because
economic growth, it was actually a negative thing for society. Industrialization s negative effects were
bad living situation, no education for children, and poor salary. During the 1800 s the way people
lived was not quite how we live today. Although some may argue that the way they lived back then
was so much easier it actually caused a lot of humans to perish. Not only did they die from diseases,
but also because there was a lack of sanitization. Industrial growth brought with it a host of

the sale of my parents family business I received the opportunity to travel west and help the new

only the terrain was, but culture as well. The state of Utah has many differences from my home state
of Minnesota. Starting from basic terrain Utah is full of endless hills and valleys ranging from
thousands of feet above and below sea level. The four wheeler trails are also abundant and never
ending. A friend and I rented a side by side for a day and drove for hours exploring the wilderness of
Utah. The state run trails are not only for four wheelers, but for hiking as well. Bryce Canyon, the red
rock capital of Utah is definitely a sight to see. I myself was not able to hike the trails of Bryce

The standard of the popular sovereignty implies, that the authority of a state is to govern itself or

are responsible to the legislatures and through them, to the people.
Krasner: According to Krasner it can be stated that governance and transitional administration are
inadequate. For this reason Krasner created three elements in which he viewed conventional
sovereignty, however, each still may contain their own violations of conventional sovereignty.

grueling experiences of these aliens. They are forced from their homes and sold to the highest bidder
multiple times and forced into jobs that they cannot succeed in. These wars are becoming much ore
difficult to solve day y day due to the increasing amount of technology that gives the enemy the power

They speculate about the condition of their patient, the other patients at the scene, and their co

Having been exposed to a typical accident scene that most emergency medical personnel are used to
working can be somewhat shocking. There are many questions, which arise after working a call like
that just described. The one I would like to focus on is what were the names of the EMTs and
Paramedics involved in the accident scene depicted? Jeff, Will, and John? Or could they possibly have
been Charlene, Lee, and Tracy?
Even in today s world of political correctness, there is still a very large gender bias when it comes to
certain things, such as Emergency Medical Services (EMS). The number of men in the field is much
higher than the number of women. Women, for the most part, are looked at as not being as capable of
performing what is required of an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or a Paramedic as men are.
EMTs and Paramedics are required to make split second, possibly life saving decisions, lift large
amounts of weight, and work long hours in all conditions. Since most women are physically smaller
than most men are, they are viewed as not being strong enough to lift patients or equipment in many
situations.

Freud s Psychoanalytic Theories as Applied to Mario Garcia s Rationalizing Malibu
Abstract
In Mario Garcia s Rationalizing Malibu , readers traverse a terrain that is often unseen one that
involves both the beautiful and ugly sides of Malibu. In this paper, the thoughts of the narrator are
dissected using Sigmund Freud s psychoanalytic concepts of id, ego, and superego superseding
ambiguity with clarity. The reader is not immediately aware of the fact that Blaine does not actually
exist, but rather, discovers it at the end of the story. One element that is reoccurring and ever present in
the narrator s life is the loss of women. He loses his mother, grandmother, and a woman he was dating.
The narrator uses repression, projection, rationalization, and denial to dull the pain of his past and
reinvent himself. By using Freud s Psychoanalytic theory and concepts of projection, rationalization,
denial, and repression the reader is made to see the ugly truth behind a seemingly perfect picture.
I. Introduction Mario Garcia s Rationalizing Malibu illustrates the life of a troubled man who spirals
out of control after experiencing a series of hardships. His problems begin with his bleak childhood
that is riddled with physical violence at the hands of his abusive father. The reader is made to believe
that these problems are happening to Blaine, an alter ego the narrator has subconsciously created,
when the

  • 2. `` Hills Like White Elephants `` By Ernest Hemingway In his short story Hills like White Elephants, Ernest Hemingway uses symbolism and landscape subtly but effectively to emphasize the tension between the main characters. The reader is asked to extrapolate much of the information in an indirect fashion. The reader must look into the symbolism and imagery used alongside the words the characters share and don t share. The natural landscape covers almost the entire story, offering vivid images that contain a large amount of interpretive insight into the story. The setting puts the couple at a crossroads, a stopping place in their journey through not just Spain, but through their lives as well. Though the exact location of the train station is not given, it is often thought to be in Zaragoza, Spain. The train station is a midpoint between their past time together and the future time that they will move toward when they leave on a train. Train stations, airports, bus stations, and ports give us a sense of transition, of being between worlds, and between experiences. Placing the stage for the drama in such a locale really grabs the reader s attention and drives further symbolism in the story. Joseph Urgo points this out in his writing quite well by stating the junction where the train will stop in the story is not just the meeting of the Barcelona and Madrid lines, but the clash of male and female sources of power and authority. (Urgo 36) Hemingway stresses a few main elements of the story s setting. The oppressive heat, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay about The Controversy Over the Electoral College... The Controversy Over the Electoral College System A number of Americans fail to realize that when they vote they are not voting for the president and vice president directly, but for electors who then cast their ballots in the Electoral College. Until the recent battle between Gov. George W. Bush and Vice president Al Gore for the presidency, this new generation of American voters has never witnessed a controversial election. Historically, there have been problematic elections allowing voters to question this system. The Electoral College is now a process open to criticism and debate, specifically because many do not understand its origin or purpose today. On November 7, 2000, Election Day, I was excited to become an official voter. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yet in the morning, I learn that Florida is again announced too close to call because by Florida law, the percentage difference between the candidates was so marginal, a recount was necessary. Is this possible to have such a close race and no president announced on Election Day? Because Al Gore had a slim lead in the popular vote, the decision of which candidate receives the electoral votes in Florida seemed irrelevant to the people. However, there have been many presidents who have merely won the plurality vote, meaning they have not received a majority of the popular vote, but electoral votes, therefore becoming minority presidents. John Quincy Adams, with 30.92 percent of the popular vote defeated Andrew Jackson in 1824, which was decided by a contingency election in the House of Representatives. Even Abraham Lincoln became a minority president in the election of 1860. He polled the lowest popular vote percentage in the history of the presidency. In 1876, Rutherford B. Hayes was elected with 47.95 percent of the popular vote and 185 electoral votes, compared to Tilden who held 50.97 percent and 184. Minority presidents also include: Woodrow Wilson, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon(1968), and Bill ClintonHowever, the election of 1888 is similar to our current situation. • 4. Comparing Poe’s Fall of the House of Usher and Taylor’s... Edgar Allan Poe s The Fall of the House of Usher and Peter Taylor s Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time Various authors develop their stories using gothic themes and characterizations of this type to lay the foundation for their desired reader response. Although Edgar Allan Poe s The Fall of the House of Usher and Peter Taylor s Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time are two completely different narratives, both of these stories share a commonality of gothic text representations. The stories take slightly different paths, with Poe s signifying traditional gothic literature and Taylor approaching his story in a more contemporary manner. Gothic texts are typically characterized by a horrifying and haunting mood, in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Just as in Poe s, this story places significance upon the appearance of the house and its surroundings. The Dorsets host parties for each generation of children in their neighborhood. Enhancing further the evidence of gothic style found in Taylor s story, the parents curiosity is overcome by a feeling of horror concerning the types of events that unfold during those parties. The parties also act as points of isolation for the children and the Dorsets. Except for the people who attend the party, no one knew the explanation or the necessity for the annual event. The presence of curiosity and secrecy help to support the gothic basis for this story. The grotesque and incestuous relationship that the Dorsets sustain functions as another gothic element in the text. One of the definite obscurities in the Dorsets house would be the hanging of various pictures, specifically Bronzino s Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time . It is a tiny color print and described as simply being tacked on the wall, and obviously been torn from a book or magazine (Taylor, 765). The picture could be interpreted as a family interacting and behaving immorally, further enhancing the notion that the Dorsets do not just have a sibling relationship but rather a more intimate connection. This print acted as a focal point of the house and further detailed the Dorsets incestuous relationship. In the end, the Dorsets are overcome by their monstrous ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Examples Of Syntax In Mrs Dalloway Stifled Expression Post Rifle Aggression The syntax of Mrs. Dalloway consists mainly of loose sentences which progress at an irregular pace. Important information is often merely touched upon, and then abandoned in favor of an anecdote. The lack of structural variation from the complex multi clause sentences in pivotal moments of the novel parallels the inability of the characters to express their socially taboo traits by neglecting to syntactically emphasize their controversial characteristics. Modern culture is intolerant of homosexuality; consequently, Clarissa Dalloway addresses her intimate moments with Sally Seton in the same syntax with which she addresses everyday occurrences. Clarissa remembers what she claims is the most exquisite ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Modern culture holds soldiers to a high standard of emotional fortitude. They are expected to emerge from war triumphantly and confidently, but this notion is far from reality. Septimus Warren Smith is a shell shocked veteran, suffering from post war thunder claps of fear, who criticizes the apathy of modernist society. He is incapable of communicating his troubles to those who are enthralled with modern culture (87). Lucrezia notes that the English are so silent, however this silence is not defined as the absence of speech, it refers to the absence of substance (88). The English are capable of speech and yet incapable of transmitting significance. The loose sentence structure and the rambling form underline Septimus s inability to efficiently broadcast his thoughts. The repetition of the phrase he could not remember it, reiterates the inability of Septimus to express his very complex emotions (98). The war has made him so lost within his own thoughts that he cannot clearly conclude how to begin to convey the anguish associated with the loss of Evans. The anxiety caused by the lack of catharsis builds up within Septimus. This intense depth of emotion directly contrasts the shallow understanding of society. The modern lifestyle and technology consume the common people of London ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Portrayal Analysis Of Know Your Rights By The Clash Know Your Rights by The Clash is a song that criticizes the oppression that poor and working class people face. This song takes a sarcastic tone and goes over the three basic rights that everyone has. It becomes very clear that the rights The Clash references are bogus and part of a rigged system. The Clash released Know Your Rights in 1982. The 1980 s, in England where this band was based, was a time of major social and political revolution. The Clash s music reflected this, primarily producing music about revolution and the working class. The Clash s defining elements were their punk rock, passionate, and enthused sound. They are now known as one of the founding punk rock legends. Know Your Rights sound and message went a long way in terms of empowering the audience; young adults, poor and working class people, revolutionaries. One of the most important steps in advocacy is telling a story that will resonate with the desired audience. Telling a story can be used across all the media realms, providing your audience with content that is packed with utility, seeded with inspiration, and that is honestly empathetic, is what draws an audience then, but also incites them to action (Hadley Chapman 9). The similarity is notes payable also have fixed maturity dates and carry either a stated or implicit interest rate (Kieso, Weygandt, amp; Warfield, 2007, p. 685). The difference is notes payable are not easily tradable. A company reports notes payable in a similar fashion as it does bonds. In reporting a note payable a company records the note at its face value of its future interest and principal cash flows. The company amortizes any discount or premium of a note over its life. If a note has no bearing interest rate the company should report the difference between the face value and the cash received as a discount on the note. This amount one amortizes over the life of the note to interest expense. Capital Leases A company may use capital leases to finance its acquisition of capital assets. In lease financing a company must met the criteria of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) on capital leases. In this a company must record both a liability, and a related asset on its balance sheet. In reporting capital lease a company reports the lease at its present value of the minimum lease payments. The company allocates these lease payments using the effective interest method to interest expense. This allocation using the effective interest method reduces the lease liability of the company. Warner Brothers bought the film rights in 1991, and the playwright Henry David Hwang (M. Butterfly) has written the screenplay. The novel became a film by the same name in 2002. A new enthusiasm in her life is her cottage in the South of France, where she can work and relax in sunlight (she suffers from the syndrome known as seasonal affective disorder). Part of a large family, Byatt honors her solitude in the Cevennes, and says she experienced the cheeriest moment of her life there: I found myself alone in this house, and there was total silence, and the sun was absolutely blazing, and I walked up and down the stairs absolutely boiling with the sense that I belonged to myself, and could finish any thought. (Certainly the sun, the sunlight and heat figure prominently in a number in a number of her fictions, such as On the Day That E. M. Forster Died, in which women works best in summertime.) Byatt states, what I write is heliotropic, and this is apparently true metaphorically and literally. Byatt also says she enjoys TV nature programs ( snails and slugs and intestinal tapeworms ), an interest that one trace from The Game and possession through Morpho Eugenia. This is especially important for an interview because you are trying to act as the best candidate for the job and first impressions are crucial. You don t want your future boss to think of you as rude or disrespectful. Facial Expressions Facial expressions come a long way when it comes to communicating. They show emotions and express how you are feeling. If you are disgusted or mad, that will show through your facial expressions. You want to smile while someone is speaking to you, and keep a positive expression on your face. If you are the one speaking, keep your chin up and continue to keep that smile on your face to show that you are interested in what you are saying and what is being said to you. This is important in all cases of communication, but for an interview you want to look as if you are interested in what is going on and being said. The natural environment has been on a road of destruction ever since the industrial revolution. In addition, humans have been overwhelmed with gaining wealth that they have ignored the environmental needs for many years. There are three main reasons why this movement is successful: The first, is the strong focus of the movement, which promotes public awareness of pollution problems, the second, is all the positive influence the main media has have to the movement and lastly, is the overall knowledge that people receive after participating in an earth day activity. This study investigates various factors affecting the timeline of the schedule by various participants in the project, followed by mathematical analysis to propose that the major reasons for delays are the domestic issues of the country. 2.1 Current techniques for the analysis of delays Following are three different modes of application of delay analysis techniques based on their simulations with fundamental schedules: 1. Direct Analysis Direct analysis involves examining the available schedule information without doing any simulations and modifications. Therefore, it is relatively simple, easy, less time consuming and a lot less expensive to perform. 2. Additive Analysis In this methodology, the delays are added to the schedule as individual activities to simulate the actual scenario of occurrence and reflect the effects of the delays on the as planned schedule. The additions of the delays can be performed individually knowns as single stage analysis as well as in multiple schedules also known as multi stage analysis (Trauner, 1990). Earlier chapters describe how he was not allowed to sleep in the bunkhouse with everyone else and had to be separated in a room by himself. • 31. Usa Compare And Contrast As a child, I had always dreamed of traveling around the world and viewing its breathtaking creations. Through the years I still have this sudden niche for traveling and experiencing new and exciting things. From Costa Rica to much of the United States I have ventured upon a lot of traveling. Through the sale of my parents family business I received the opportunity to travel west and help the new owners grow. After traveling through many of the western states I finally realized how different not only the terrain was, but culture as well. The state of Utah has many differences from my home state of Minnesota. Starting from basic terrain Utah is full of endless hills and valleys ranging from thousands of feet above and below sea level. The four wheeler trails are also abundant and never ending. A friend and I rented a side by side for a day and drove for hours exploring the wilderness of Utah. The state run trails are not only for four wheelers, but for hiking as well. Bryce Canyon, the red rock capital of Utah is definitely a sight to see. I myself was not able to hike the trails of Bryce Canyon, but if I was given the opportunity I surely would. Towards the entrance of the park the road cuts through an arch of red rock. This pristine piece of natural art is a cherished tourist attraction within the state of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Further, under our constitution, those who wield the executive power of the Government are responsible to the legislatures and through them, to the people. Krasner: According to Krasner it can be stated that governance and transitional administration are inadequate. For this reason Krasner created three elements in which he viewed conventional sovereignty, however, each still may contain their own violations of conventional sovereignty. I have recently studied abroad in the Italy and traveled through Milan many times. Due to this experience I have first hand knowledge of undeniably grueling experiences of these aliens. They are forced from their homes and sold to the highest bidder multiple times and forced into jobs that they cannot succeed in. These wars are becoming much ore difficult to solve day y day due to the increasing amount of technology that gives the enemy the power to succeed. Naim recommends that a more flexible sovereignty be put in place. For example the Venezuelan government denied the U.S. planes authorization to fly over Venezuelan territory to monitor air routes commonly used by narcotraffickers giving the government the time and resources to crack down on a single issue allowing for more resources to be put towards others when it is solved (Naim ... They speculate about the condition of their patient, the other patients at the scene, and their co workers. Things are beginning to return to the calmness that exists between calls. Having been exposed to a typical accident scene that most emergency medical personnel are used to working can be somewhat shocking. There are many questions, which arise after working a call like that just described. The one I would like to focus on is what were the names of the EMTs and Paramedics involved in the accident scene depicted? Jeff, Will, and John? Or could they possibly have been Charlene, Lee, and Tracy? Even in today s world of political correctness, there is still a very large gender bias when it comes to certain things, such as Emergency Medical Services (EMS). The number of men in the field is much higher than the number of women. Women, for the most part, are looked at as not being as capable of performing what is required of an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or a Paramedic as men are. EMTs and Paramedics are required to make split second, possibly life saving decisions, lift large amounts of weight, and work long hours in all conditions. Since most women are physically smaller than most men are, they are viewed as not being strong enough to lift patients or equipment in many situations. A personal example that proves this point happened to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. The Importance Of The Washington Monument The Washington Monument is one of the most important monuments because it s a monument for our first president, George Washington! I remember learning about George Washington in history class and something that stuck with me was that he said not to split into two political parties. Unfortunately, we did not listen and here we are voting every 4 or 8 years for a new president! I remember visiting the Washington Monument with my family when I was younger and I was amazing to see that the monument was in 2 different colors! This is because the National Washington Monument Society did not have enough money to complete the monument (National Park Service, 5.) In 1884 the U.S. Government took hold of the project and used a marble from a different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
