Isabel Allene s Gold Rush In Daughter Of Fortune
When gold was discovered in 1848, a gold rush was created. James Marshall discovered it at Sutter s
Mill. People from around the world came to find gold for themselves and strike it rich. People left
their belongings and their families behind for a chance to find gold. Many people who came to
California did not find gold and lost most of their money. Before this California was relatively small
in population. Many towns in California that were small turned into boomtowns. Boomtowns were
cities which population grew exponentially. San Francisco had a population of 200 residents and then
grew to over 30,000 people during the gold rush. With all the people coming in, violence, gangs,
prostitution, and land destruction arose.

Many people lied to make money off of others. Jacob Todd was a man from end who lost a bet and
had to sell bibles in Chile. He received money from the church because they thought he was
missionary. He moved to California after he was found to be a fraud. He made himself a journalist. As
a journalist he makes money by making up stories about Joaquin. He writes that he is a bad person. He
says he is a bandit. With the spur of the gold rush, many different ethnic groups came to one area. At
first there was little racism. Late on, people began to act against each other. They committed hate
crimes against the other races. Each ethnic group made their own communities to protect themselves
and stay together. Although racism played a big part in the gold rush, some people still managed to
stay together and look past ethnic backgrounds. A good example of this is Elzia and Tao. Eliza has a
Chilean background while Tao has an Asian background. They lived together through the hard times
of the gold rush. They had a relationship, which grew over their journey looking for Joaquin. Although
times were hard and money was scarce, they stayed

Activity based costing
Problems with conventional product costing systems
General features of conventional product costing systems
Direct material and direct labour costs are traced to products
Manufacturing overhead costs are allocated to products using a predetermined overhead rate

Dissociative Amnesia
Dissociative amnesia is part of a group of mental dissociative disorders. Dissociative disorders are
mental illnesses that breakdowns or disturbs the process of memory, awareness, consciousness,
identity, and perception. When one of the dissociative disorders comes into effect it can interfere with
a person s general functioning, including physical and mental activities, social work, and even
different types of relationships. Dissociative amnesia is a memory disorder that creates the inability to
retrieve a memory that leads up to the onset of amnesia and the inability to not form new long term
memory. Dissociative amnesia is usually causes by a traumatic event or stress. Most people who are

Although there is really no way to prevent Dissociative Amnesia, there are still ways to treat the
illness. The first step in treating the mental illness is to relieve and try to control the patient s behavior
and symptoms. After this the next step in treating Dissociative Amnesia is trying to help the patient
bring back very painful and traumatic memories and expressing them and coming to terms with them.
This process also makes the patient develop new life skills, improve relationships, and restore
functioning. After this the next step in the process depends on how bad or severe the patient s

Research Paper On Ignorance
Do We Prefer to Ignore?
Ignorance, the root and stem of every evil said Plato, a very famous philosopher ( Plato Quotes ). And
whenever the word ignorance pops up, people are more tend to think negatively. The Oxford Living
Dictionary defines it as the lack of knowledge ( Ignorance ) and its synonyms are, according to
Thesaurus.com, words such as illiteracy and insensitivity ( Ignorance ), which present a negative
meaning even with the prefixes il and in . However, is it possible that today ignorant people are more
likeable? Or can ignorance be viewed as positive, as the famous saying Ignorance is bliss. suggests?
Even though ignorance can be seen as a word that is quite straightforward and is only negative,
ignorance has been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We all value different things: Some value religion, some believe that everything that has happened is
mathematical, and this results in a variety of answers when someone is asked, Which type of
knowledge would you prioritize? . Thus, when asked How would you say whether a person is ignorant
or not? , their answers also vary. As I asked this question in my interviews, Jason Leiter said that he
would value, Awareness of political events, diversity of the world (Leiter), whereas Cansu Åženocak, a
Turkish Math teacher, suggested that she would value How many areas is that person knowledgeable
about (Senocak). As another example, in popular religious beliefs, ignorant people are the ones that do
not accept God s guidance. It isn t about whether you know many languages, learned many sciences
and read many books; ignorance has a direct connection with God. In Islam, for example, the name
Jahiliyyah was used to describe the pre Islamic period in Saudi Arabia, and the word can be literally
translated as Age of Ignorance as jahili means ignorant (Jahiliyyah). And Vedas, which are the
religious texts of Hinduism, suggests, 10 O God Almighty! I am steeped into the darkness of
ignorance. I need to be moved into the light of your wisdom (The Vedas), which means that not being
ignorant is believing in God and creates a direct relationship between

Bisto Gravy Spring Chair Sunday Analysis
unday chair was inspired from a friend of mine volunteering to feed an elderly person at her house,
from the organization sponsored by Bisto Gravy called, Spare Chair Sunday. Volunteers are sought
after to offer this interaction with an elderly person who has no family.
I felt there is a lot of ignorance surrounding this topic and I wanted to bring light to this situation in a
humorous way. Showing what a difference can be made to that one person who is lonely, with no
family.
This charity struggles with volunteers because the elderly are stereotyped. Although this may be the
case, I wanted to bring humor to this, which I d hope would inspire the younger generation to do their
bit, as they too, will become old one day.

close because at the very end of this act is the revelation that Abertha, Bertie , was in fact Eileen s
mum s best friend as Bertie notices the photo which was taken sixty years ago with her and EIleens
mother aged sixteen. The third act is initiated with a flash back. This is so their back story is shown,
bringing dimension to the stage 2 young girls, euphorically happy dressed in 1950 s dresses as they re
off to a disco. The next flash back is of the two women saying goodbye as they move, unwillingly on
with their lives. It shows the closeness between Grace and Bertie, yet due to life, men and time, they
become separated, yet throughout their lives, having never forgot one another and their memories
having always remained close within their hearts. This again relates to todays society. I lost my best
friend at the age of 18, and this was the final inspiration to this story. I was lucky to have made our
friendship up a week before she died. This here isn t the case, but meeting the daughter of her best
friend is second best, and because the Bertie has no family, it shows that now she has and although
Eileen didn t want to even invite an old person over, it shows what good can be

Red Bull Essay examples
Q1: Explain how Red Bull has been able to arouse and activate the consumer decision making
process. Initially, Red Bull made consumers realize that they need this kind of energy drink by
physiological arousal. For blue collar in Thai such as taxi and truck drivers, they usually have to
combat mental and physical fatigue that are their bodily needs at that moment. Red Bull used and
interprets these physiological cues to arouse related needs about energy drinks. After consumers
recognized the needs, Red Bull evoked consumers to link energy drinks to their product according to
the function and prices. People tend to perceive things they need or want (Schiffman et al., 2014).
Thus consumers will remember Red Bull. After ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These help consumers develop enduring perceptions about Red Bull (Batra et al., 2009). Red Bull has
strong brand personality to make customers remember it and separate it from its competitors. Red Bull
s brand image is a red bull with the blue cans. The design is unique and link to the brand name and its
product. All these factors create a image of Red Bull to customers. As consumers subconsciously
exercise selectivity about which aspects of the environment they perceive (Schiffman et al., 2014),
Red Bull could enter the evoked set of consumers as long as it could catch customers insights. Besides
the unique brand, Red Bull handing out free samples of the product and sales teams driving Minis
with a Red Bull can strapped on top of the car. These actions catch consumers insight and attract them
to purchase. All these elements make Red Bull are able to be successful in entering the evoked set of
consumers.
Q3: What could influence a consumer to stop purchasing Red Bull? If consumers do not notice
products, they will not be able to purchase them (Jansson Boyd, 2010). However, in this case, Red
Bull is a well known brand. Therefore this is not an ideal method. If the value of the product cannot
match customers expectation, consumers might stop

Upton Sinclair and the Chicago Meat-Packing Industry
Upton Sinclair and the Chicago Meat packing Industry In 1900, there were over 1.6 million people
living in Chicago, the country s second largest city. Of those 1.6 million, nearly 30% were immigrants.
Most immigrants came to the United States with little or no money at all, in hope of making a better
life for themselves. A city like Chicago offered these people jobs that required no skill. However, the
working and living conditions were hazardous and the pay was barely enough to survive on. This is
the bases for Upton Sinclair s book, The Jungle. Sinclair agreed to investigate working conditions in
Chicago s meatpacking plants, for the Socialist journal, Appeal to Reason, in 1904. The Jungle,
published in 1906, is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Critics view Sinclair as a muckraker, a talented progressive journalist and reformer with no literary
technique whatsoever. Although Sinclair s accurate descriptions were amazing, he fell short in his
character development and plot. The main character, Jurgis Rudkus, went through an implausible
number of extreme changes in the period of time the story takes place. He morphs from a pure hearted
family man, to an alcoholic tramp, a beggar, a criminal, a player in machine politics, and finally a
sober, hard core member of the Socialist Party. The other characters are hardly worth mentioning.
Readers really don t care much about them because they are so under developed. Much like the main
character, the plot is all over the place, yet it doesn t seem to go anywhere. There is no hope for the
characters in The Jungle. Anytime things start to get better for them, something else comes along to
bring them back down. It s a constant rollercoaster ride between death and existence. The problem
with the plot is most noticeable in the last four chapters of the book. Sinclair was writing this book for
a Socialist publication, but hadn t said much about socialism up to this point and didn t really know
how to end the book. Therefore, these last four chapters are dedicated to the Socialist cause. Sinclair
switches from describing actual events, to describing the theoretical

advantage by the company potential. The Stakeholder analysis: The Walt Disney Company
stakeholders consist of communities, business partners, board of directors/shareholders, employees,
customers/guests, and major business segments. The board of directors/shareholders and the major
business segments are in the section of high power, high importance. The board of directors and
shareholders expect a return of net asset value and an increase in the growth of dividend payments.
They also expect more involvement in the decision of the company. Included in this group are the long
time ousted members Roy Disney and Stanley Gold. Major business segments, consist of
Entertainment Studios, Consumer Products, Disney Parks and Resorts, and Media Networks. This
group expects creative license to work on projects that allow them to express the creativity of their
individual organizations. This requires them to have the freedom of innovation and independence to
make choices.
The community, business partners, customers/guests, and employees all have low power, high
importance. The community expects a high level of quality products and services that provide

Analysis Of Sweat By Zora Neale Hurston
Everybody s good when they re good, darling. You don t judge a person by that. It s how they act
when things aren t good that tells you who they really are. ― Megan Jacobson (Goodreads, 56 Quotes
) Much like the world around us, literature has many elements that have the reader portray their own
understanding and perspective of it. In Sweat, Zora Neale Hurston gives the reader many different
situations where many readers can have several viewpoints. This seems to be very similar to the Bible,
where a child of God can read the same scripture as another and have a completely different meaning
in their eyes. Zora Hurston uses many elements that focus on the idea that actions one does speak
louder than words, by the use of religious imagery and Delia, the wife.
Sweat s narrator point of view is told in third person omniscient, meaning the narrator switches from
character to character constantly and does not restrict the reader to one character s perspective.
Hurston uses this element to introduce us to each of the characters daily life and their belief in
Christianity. Not only does it give us each character s standpoint, but also clarification of an outside
view and provide the reader with additional information and background of the married couple.
To begin the story, Hurston, with the use of the narrator being from third person omniscient,
introduces us to Delia as a wash woman who was working on a Sunday night all the way until eleven
o clock after church earlier in the

The Effects Of Nickel On Ash Toxicity
Several metals have been tested for their role in fly ash toxicity. Although universally high toxicity has
been attributed to vanadium [Bhatnagar, 2004 and Liu et al., 2005], nickel is generally not far behind
[Salnikow et al., 2004 and Kurowska Bal, 2010]. Nickel is a primary contributor to the inhalation
cancer risk because of its relative high concentration in fly ash and the known carcinogenic potency of
its sub sulfide forms (Ni3S2) [Dreher et al., 1997]. Huang et al. (2015) suggest, that oil fly ash surface
metals (like vanadium) may be the key determinants in the induction and/or amplification of allergic
responses.
The metal fraction of oil ashes has been shown, in both in vivo and in vitro studies, to increase lung
injury and cytotoxicity (Dreher et al., 1997; Dye et al., 1999; Gavett et al., 1997; Kodavanti et al.,
1998; 2001), increase lung inflammation (Kodavanti et al., 1998; 2001), increase airway reactivity
(Gavett et al., 1997; Lambert et al., 2000), alter cytokine production (Dye et al., 1999; Carter et al.,
1997), and increase oxidative stress (Ghio et al., 2002b; Kim et al., 2003; Lewis et al., 2003)
Kadiiska et al. (1997) reported that the vanadium, nickel and iron in oil ashes produced a significant
influx of neutrophils and proteins indicative of acute inflammation, and significant increases in the
formation of free radicals in rates. Vanadium may play the most significant role in the inflammatory
response produced by oil ash. Dreher et

Racism In The Kite Runner
Racism and discrimination were incredibly prominent in Afghanistan at the time of the
writing/publishing of The Kite Runner and is still prominent today, not only in some parts of
Afghanistan but also around the world. No matter how much the modern world molds their views to
become more and more open and tolerant, people still discriminate against others due to their looks
and beliefs. Hosseini portrays these conditions of racism and discrimination in The Kite Runner
through interactions between Amir and his servant friend Hassan, and also through interactions
between Hassan and others, who is often the victim of racist actions and dialogue. The socioeconomic
conditions in Afghanistan during this time show the inequality between the majority (Sunni
Muslims/Pashtuns in this case) and the minority (Shi a Muslims/Hazaras) and how people
discriminate against each other based on how they look and what their religious beliefs are. Amir, at
the beginning of the book, has a decent life. He is the young son of a wealthy man and has a great
friend in a boy named Hassan. He is a Sunni Muslim and a Pashtun, both being the majority in
Afghanistan where he lived. Hassan, though, was not so lucky. He was born from a Hazara mother and
father, the minority during this time. His father, Ali, was a servant to Amir s father, Baba, meaning that
like Ali, Hassan was destined to have the same fate as his father and work as a servant to Amir for the
rest of his life. Although Amir believes that

Choomsky s Theory Of UG
The hypothesis is aligned to Chomsky s theory of UG. In simple words: Communication is the
meaningful exchange of information between two or more participants (human and non human)
through sounds, gestures, movements, etc., those things constituent isolated signals to transmit very
specific messages. On the other hand, Language is the human capacity for acquiring and using
complex systems of communication. The term Universal Grammar is the name that Noam Chomsky
gives, as the very name implies, to those grammatical features that are shared by all derivations of
human language.
The ability to use grammatically accurate sentences is a natural process and can be done without being
taught. It is part of human cognitive ability because UG itself determines what abilities are innate and
what are shared or experience by human. UG defines that if a child is brought up under normal ...

This is an evident example of his theory: humans are natural beings and have undergone evolution
(UG) common to all humans. One way to approach this concept is posing a hypothetical question:
Why does a child learn the language the way it does?
If we come back to Plato s problem: the problem of finding and explanation for how a child acquires
language though the child does not receive explicit instruction and the input a child receives is limited,
we will be able to identify a limited environmental stimulus referred to a Poverty of stimulus. This
means that natural language grammar is unlearnable given the relatively limited data available to
children learning a language, and therefore that this knowledge is supplemented with some sort of
innate linguistic capacity. And also humans are born with a specific representational adaptation for
language that both funds and limits their competence to acquire specific types of natural languages
over the course of their cognitive development and linguistic

The media prominently impacts our lives as we are drawn to a fictional world, which influences our
attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors about controversial subjects. Children are exposed to various sorts of
media that may play a positive or negative role in their socialization. If children are involved in
numerous extra curricular activities they have a broadened social network, which allows them to be

Violence now of days is honored, glorified, and yet celebrated in mass media and motions to society
that violence is normal, glamorous, and widespread in our culture (Caron, 113). Violence is not only

Alphonse Bertillon was the first to truly create the scientific method of criminal identification. Born in
1853, Bertillon was from Paris France and came from a family of scientific background. His father,
Dr. Louis Adolphe Bertillon, was a distinguished physician, statistician, and the vice president of the
Anthropological society of Paris. Bertillon s grandfather was also a well known naturalist and

He then sent several reports to the Prefect of Police but they turned him down. Then a new prefect

Bertillon to introduce anthropometry on an experimental basis for three months. Bertillon made his
first identification on February 20, 1883, less than two weeks before his experiment was over.
Bertillon success of anthropometry spread to other countries. Many countries set up anthropometry
laboratories. However anthropometry would soon be replaced with a new identification method called
fingerprints. Sir Francis Galton was invited to Paris so Bertillon could increase his knowledge of
fingerprints. Bertillon felt that in the beginning that fingerprints were not very practical due to the lack
of classification system. He eventually included fingerprints on the end of his anthropometry cards as
a final check of identifications. Anthropometry was discarded in France and replaced by fingerprint
identification upon Bertillon s death in 1914. According to Jain Anil, fingerprint based identification is
the oldest method which has been successfully used in numerous applications and though Bertillon s
anthropometry raised many valid points in forensic science, it was discarded and replaced by the

War In The Odyssey
Homer s epic poem about the long ten year war between the greek Achaeans and Trojans conveys
characteristics of ancient greek society. These include time, geras, menis and aristea, which are
respectively honor, stuff, anger or wrath and finally a warrior s greatest moment. While it may be
expected to be a poem about a glory filled war that the great heroes and even mighty Gods of
Olympus get entangled within, there are messages and references to the pity and extreme loss that war
brings. Especially the end of the poem in which the great warrior Achilles lays waste the Trojans and
gives revenge to the great Trojan warrior Hector.
The ten year war began when Agamemnon, the King of Mycenae launched a fleet to Troy in order to
retrieve Helen, who had been kidnapped from Menelaus by the Trojan prince Paris. The tides of war
keep changing throughout the poem as the immortal gods of Mount Olympus intervene and even butt
heads against each other on several occasions, which shows how war can bring even brothers and
sisters against one another. This can be seen when together Athena and ... Show more content on

In the novel, The Bluest Eye, by Toni Morrison the unorthodox structure and undermining content
inspired and continues to inspire controversy. Morrison s creative narrative approach addresses many
issues of racism and identity. Through the course of the novel some vulgar subjects are also
introduced, such as incest and pedophilia. In the book the point of view founded by the characters

left and right ventricle, per unit time (usually in 1 minute). It is the product of Stroke Volume (SV) and
Heart Rate (HR) [1].
CO = SV x HR
Jessica s pre exercise cardiac output can therefore be calculated as 70ml x 70bpm = 4900ml/min or
4.9L/min, whilst her post exercise cardiac output is 110ml x 130bpm = 14.3L/min. In an adult at rest,
the average cardiac output is 4.9L/min for a human female and 5.6L/min for a male [2]. Throughout
normal life, however, cardiac output can vary continuously depending on the metabolic demands of
the body. As seen with Jessica, cardiac output may be raised during exercise, and may also be reduced,
for example in sleep [3].
Stroke volume is the amount of blood pumped out from a ventricle in one heartbeat, and is dependent
on several factors such as heart size, contraction duration, contractility, preload, and afterload [1].
Stroke volume can be calculated as the difference between the volume of blood in the ventricle just
before a heartbeat (end diastolic volume; EDV) and the volume following contraction (end systolic
volume; ESV) [4].
SV = EDV ESV
Average stroke volume is around 70ml (in a healthy 70kg man; with approximately 120ml and 50ml
measurements for EDV and ESV, respectively) [4]. Jessica s stroke volume is also 70ml, which
increases (as expected) to 110ml following exercise, achieved by a drop in ESV due to a more
complete emptying

Compare And Contrast Cherokee And Comanche
People often ask, How did the world begin? . Some argue the Big Bang Theory, others argue God
created Earth Himself. Most Native Americans, however, generally believed their world stemmed
from multiple gods, animals, or a phenomenon of nature. Each creation myth was tailored to each
individual tribe s culture, customs, and beliefs. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to compare and
analyze the creation stories of two prominent Native American tribes present in Texas: the Comanche
and the Apache; warrior tribes that rode fiercely on horseback, and both competed to dominate the
Great Plains. These two tribes were fairly similar in their military prowess, but both had a different
language, culture, and a remarkably different creation story. From their creation story, one may begin
to understand the culture of these two notable tribes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Apache separated from the Athabascan people of Alaska and Northern Canada, and began their
migration southward. However, it is unclear when their migration began and ended, it was most likely
closer to the end of the 14th century. At the time, the Apache called themselves Inde or Dine, which
means the people . The name Apache is believed to be derived from the Zuni word apachu , meaning
enemy . After their arrival in the Southwest, the Apache split into two groups: the Lipans and the
Mescaleros. The Lipans lived on the eastern side of the Rio Grande River, while the Mescaleros lived
on the western side. Due to their nomadic nature, there

My Experience At The Mountain View Hospital
Reflection
This semester I volunteered my time at the Mountain View Hospital in the Women s Department,
specifically in the postpartum section. I chose this volunteer opportunity because it significantly
relates to my career path and passion. I am biological sciences major and
Psychology minor (pre medical) and the goal of my medical career is to become an
Obstetrician/gynecologist and then potentially specialize in the fertility and infertility of women.
Throughout the course of this semester I would volunteer at Mountain View on Friday evenings. My
main job in the postpartum section was to attend to the basic needs of the new mothers, I would
provide water, ice chips, snacks, and clean linens when needed. I manned the main entrance of ...

However, I can do other things to provide care, compassion, and relief to the post partum mothers. On
one of my days volunteering I had a particularly nice experience, which reflects how volunteers can
provide a service to their community through small acts of kindness. A mother just had her third child,
her other two children, who seemed to be no older that 5 or 6 years old, were restless and quite out of
control. There was a male figure who came and went a few times, but he didn t seem to have any
attachment to the other two children. The mother seemed overwhelmed probably because of the
exhaustion and stress of childbirth. Also, she was stuck in bed while her incisions from her C section
healed. According to the nurses, she was only permitted to walk a lap around the nurse s station every
few hours, let alone chase around her other rowdy children. So I had an idea: in the post partum
department we have these wagons that are decorated with characters from Winnie the Pooh and
Finding Nemo. To offer the mother some rest, I asked if I could pull her children around the Women s
Department in the wagon. The mother accepted my offer and I loaded the two children, Leah and
Ryder, into the wagon. I pulled the two kids around for about 45 minutes. When I came back to the
mother s room, she thanked me many times. It was personally rewarding to help the mother, even
though it was just a small gesture.

A Vegetarian Diet Is The Best Possible Diet For A Person...
A vegan diet is the best possible diet for a person because it prevents diseases. In Sarah Barns view,
Vegans and vegetarians typically have... a lower risk of death from heart disease, and lower overall
cancer rates. Science and research confirms that you don t need meat to be healthy at all, in fact
statistics point to quite the opposite ( Live Longer, Boost Immunity, Slim Down: 10 Reasons Why You
Should Go Vegan In 2015, Daily Express par. 3). Basically, Sarah Barns is saying that having a vegan
or vegetarian diet will decrease the chances of dying from heart disease. This demonstrates that dying
from heart disease is prevented by having a lack of unhealthy fat in the body. Unhealthy fat gets
trapped in the arteries, which clogs them. When the arteries are clogged, it can lead to a heart attack or
a stroke. Clearly, having a vegan diet will contribute to the prevention of heart disease. Hope
Warshaw, Registered Dietitian Nutritionists and Certified Diabetes Educator states, A study of nearly
100,000 members of the Seventh day Adventist church, which promotes a vegetarian diet, showed that
the vegetarians had a lower rate of type 2 than nonvegetarians. ( Should You Go Vegetarian? The
Benefits of a Plant Based Diet for People with Diabetes par. 3). Also, Michael J. Orlich M.D., assistant

Humanistic Therapy Theory
The therapeutic approach I have chosen to help Maggie overcome her depression is humanistic
therapy. I chose humanistic therapy because first, I like the idea of creating a relationship with your
client to enhance their self worth. Second, I like how the therapist genuinely cares about the patient
and doesn t necessarily have to prescribe medications or just see their patient as another dollar sign.
The humanistic approach is different than the psychodynamic approach because humanist tend to
listen to what their patients have to say and the patient will direct where the therapy session will lead.
However, a psychodynamic therapist already has a conversation thought out and he or she will
determine where the therapy session will go. As a humanistic therapist, the main issues I need to
discuss is her work life, attitudes towards friends or loved ones, and her inner thoughts. To start off,
the first red flag that I see observing Maggie s case is her occupation. She is said to always strive for
the best when it comes to being a medical resident. However, continuously doing work without having
time for herself could be a real problem sanity wise. Furthermore, she has been with irritable and
snippy to her coworkers especially her husband. If she continues this behavior she might lose a bond
with her work colleagues and loved ones. Lastly, her personal thoughts about her performance or
behavior could be draining on a person with depression. When these negative thoughts continue to
circulate especially with her condition it could influence her to distance herself and probably push her
to suicide. The humanistic approach would view and understand by looking at the person from a
whole perspective, instead of a specific point of view shown through sessions by observing their
behavior. Humanists view Maggie s depression as what is holding her back from becoming the best
version of herself. Humanists would believe that Maggie s depression is a result of her inability to
cope with personal circumstances or her inability to have balance in her life. Humanists would
understand her depression by listening to her thoughts and feelings. Maggie is the conductor of the
conversation and humanistic therapists are the listeners

Prejudice In Othello
In the novel Othello by William Shakespeare, there is an overall theme of prejudice. Prejudice can be

the people around them that are close to them. They are judged different ways throughout the novel.
Othello and Fanny Price are being prejudiced because of their appearance. Othello is judged because

King Buchadnezzar 2 Research Paper
King Nebuchadnezzar II (634 562 BCE) was the greatest king of ancient Babylon, succeeding his
father, Nabopolassar. King Nabopolassar had defeated the Assyrians with the help of the Medes and
liberated Babylonia from Assyrian rule. In this way he provided for his son (as Philip II would do for
his son Alexander later) a stable base and ample wealth on which to build an opportunity for greatness
which Nebuchadnezzar took full advantage of. Nebuchadnezzar II defeated the Egyptians and their
allies the Assyrians at Carchemish, subdued Palestine and the region of Syria and, consolidating his
power, controlled all the trade routes across Mesopotamia from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean
Sea. Remaining true to the vision of his inaugural address, the great king spent the tolls he collected
and the taxes he gathered in creating a city which, he hoped, would be recognized as a wonder of the
world (and, indeed, his hopes were realized in later writers adding the walls of Babylon and, in
particular, the Ishtar gate to the list of the Seven Wonders of the World). In the forty three years of his
reign, Nebuchadnezzar II made the most of the time employing a vast army of slave labor to surround
his city with walls so thick that chariot races were conducted around the tops and which stretched fifty
six miles in length, encircling an area of two hundred square miles.

Comparing The Man He Killed And The White City
Claude McKay and Thomas Hardy both clarify in their stories a feeling of choosing what they are
doing with their life and the circumstance that they are in. In The Man He Killed the storyteller is
befuddled and in dismay of what he has done and why he must be in a circumstance of executing
another man in any case as he said he could have most likely of been great companions with the other
person if things were distinctive, perhaps. In The White City the storyteller has a filled contempt for
the white world and being placed in a position where he supposes the main reason he is not a skeleton

Pan s Labyrinth Themes
Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane A child s imagination is the most powerful weapon he or she can be
armed with and it is within Guillermo Del Toro s captivating and Academy Award winning film, Pan s
Labyrinth that we are presented with this concept as well as themes of existentialism and duality.
Various motifs such as; brutality, innocence, childhood and war, allow Del Toro to construct two
worlds that are all too real and very similar for one young girl. Set in Spain 1944 during a time when
people are forced to choose between their beliefs and their survival, Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) is
compelled to choose her faith in fantasies over her hope in humanity. Ofelia is in a battle of good vs.
evil vs. innocence and must realize that all three cannot thrive. The opening and ending scenes of Del

temptation presents itself in a beautiful form. Ofelia s good nature and pure heart would be revealed in

disturbing however; del Toro chooses to make her death about redemption since she regained her

the fantasy realm she desperately desired to be apart of. The final shot of Ofelia mirrors the opening

The Effect Of Cisplatin On Cell Division Of Escherichia...
Introduction
Cisplatin (figure 1a) is a platinum derived alkylating like, anti proliferative compound and is also
known as cis diammine dichloro platinum (II) (CDDP). It is one of the most effective anti neoplastic
drug that is used in the treatment of several neoplasias such as lung, ovarian, bladder and testicular
cancers 1. It was synthesised in 1844 by M. Peyrone (figure 1b). However, it did not attain any
scientific importance until 1965, when Rosenberg, Vancamp et al at Michigan State University
discovered that platinum electrodes were able to inhibit cell division of Escherichia Coli bacteria. This
discovery led to a further investigation of cisplatin effects on cell division in different tumor cells. It
was shown to have anticancer activity and was the first platinum cytotoxic drug approved by food and
administration authority (FDA) in 1978 2.

A normal cell replicates and divides into two cells which in turn divide into four daughter cells and so
on by DNA replication in mitosis. As the cell grows old, it dies because of the programmed cell death
known as apoptosis. The dead cells are then replaced with new cells. However when the DNA of the
cell is damaged, for example when there is a genetic change such as DNA mutation or defective
protein synthesis, the cell becomes abnormal. It begins to divide uncontrollably and forms a growth

Innocence Of The Lamb By William Blake
Innocence of the Lamb The Lamb is one of William Blake s famous poems from his book Songs of
Innocence published in 1789. The Lamb is also known as Little Lamb but better known by the former
name. This poem is a didactic poem reflecting spirituality from a Christian point of view. The Lamb is
a question and an answer type of poem and has a sense of innocence as the speaker is a child
questioning a lamb s existence. In The Lamb William Blake uses metaphor, symbolism and imagery to
express Jesus Christ and His relationship with the world. The Begin, William Blake was born in
London on November 28, 1757 to a middle class family. He was taken out of school at a young age by
his mother and started taking drawing classes and reading poetry. His parents were involved with the
Anglican Church at a portion of Blake s life and this religious background stayed with him. He found
his inspiration from the Bible as is shown throughout his work. At the age of fifteen Blake became an
apprentice to James Basire and for seven years he worked in London engraving images from churches
and architecture, this formed his specific artistic style later in life. In 1782 Blake married Catherine
Boucher and he taught her how to read and write. In 1783 Blake published his first work Poetical
Sketches. Five years later, in 1788, Blake made an important artistic discovery with the invention of
relief etching, this process became the primary format for the majority of Blake s work. This

However, even if prostitution is legal for sex trade workers who enter this lifestyle freely and
deliberately, it is important to look at the choice and constraints in the performance of this deviant
activity. Is prostitution a form of sexual deviance, a paid work, or a troubled response to childhood
abuse?
Causes of Women entering Prostitution
Most street prostitutes have common backgrounds; they are women and men who come from the
lower socio economic strata, and who are or were greatly dissatisfied with some aspects of their home
life (Lowman, 1992, p.54).
Research on prostitution shows some basic patterns in the family backgrounds of people involved in
prostitution. Often less than 18 years of age, most have few qualifications for other work. Various
reasons can be invoked as to why young adults turn to prostitution; poverty, mental illness,
homelessness, a history of childhood emotional, physical or sexual abuse.
Troubled childhood
Usually, prostitutes leave home at a very early age (67% of prostitutes enter the profession under the
age of eighteen). The average age of sex workers is 13 years old (Silbert, amp; Pines, 1982, p.122).
However, some are as young as young as 11 years old, as Wayne Chamberlain (1998) notes.

Fedex, An International Express Shipping Company
Page 1
Federal Express, or now known as FedEx, is an international express shipping company that ships
anything from envelopes and small packages to large freight. It was the brain child of college student
Fredrick Smith, when in 1965 at Yale a professor assigned the class to invent an industry. At that time
the only option companies had was to utilized passenger routes to ship packages, which was not very
efficient for time sensitive deliveries. Six years later after Smith left the military he bought a small
company and experienced how difficult it was to get supplies delivered within a couple of days.
Remembering the paper he had written in college, Smith founded Federal Express in 1973. Starting
with 14 small planes today it has grown into the world s largest al cargo air fleet.
By 1980 FedEx was way ahead of the competition and the company was growing by 40 percent per
year with 1 billion in revenue. Through many international acquisitions and mergers they have grown
internationally and now delivery to over 220 countries. As the demand for express freight shipments
increased so did the need to ship and receive documents overnight. The overnight letter service was
introduced by FedEx in 1981 and is now a part of standard business practices for most companies in
America and the world. Many companies have multiple overnight deliveries and pickups throughout
the day. FedEx saw the future potential of overnight letter, package and freight deliveries and started

While one may draw parallels to the missing parent figures in our main character s lives, the role s
those parents left seemed to differ in the novel and the film. Nick s mother s absence seems to be why
Nick is so cold hearted. The abuse by Nick s father can be related to his mother not being present and
also his ability to justify his own personal agenda. Nick seems to victimize himself for everything that
happened to him throughout the book. However, Jamal seems to be better suited for overcoming
obstacles and not whining about them. Jamal s lack of a father figure seemed to have made him a
better person and helped him grow into the person he is today. He doesn t victimize himself because
he, himself, realizes that his own life is a choice. He takes responsibility for what he does and he
grows from it. Jamal s lack of a father helped him learn, ultimately, that he is the master of his own
fate. Whereas, it took Nick the whole novel to realize this and take responsibility.
Lastly, Breathing Underwater and Finding Forrester are similar in their writing. Nick and Jamal are
both given a gift to write. Writing is a heavily influential theme made in both the novel and the film.
Nick and Jamal use writing as an outlet to channel their frustration and struggles in their lives. It
allows them to grow and express a sense of individuality, as well as giving them opportunities. In the

The Great Impact On The United Kingdom
The 1930s have been a decade of great changes in the United Kingdom. Three succes sive National
governments left the British People quite lost in terms of leadership, especial ly in those times of
Great Depression. The raising of the taxes and the massive wave of unemployment led the poor to
become even poorer but it also saw the expansion of the middle class among the society. Indeed, this
period saw the falling of prices of goods, the reduction of the number of large families, the settling of
the reduction of working hours and the outbreak of paid holidays by the Prime Minister Neville
Chamberlain which let families in less need. Moreover, the outbreak of household electrical goods
such as televisions or vacuum cleaners marked the development of the popular culture and, therefore,
of the middle class . On the other hand, the quantity of poor remained massive among the working
class and the rising of the conservative party after the appalling failure of Ramsay MacDonald s
government has made a contribution to it. Those changes stimulated interest from many authors in the
postwar literature and the role of class has been crucial in the wri ting of the period. Between two
wars, it was the end of the birth setting your future. Many people didn t know where they belonged
anymore and trying to figure that out was the aim of most authors. Using their experience in their

portion size is so important in controlling obesity. Portion control is incredibly important in
controlling obesity. Often people will eat in auto pilot and not actively pay attention to what they are

Explain how daylight savings time is a nudge. During the summer when we change the clock from
8:00 to 9:00, it nudges people to wake up early and enjoy the extra hour of sunshine. Even though the
amount of sunlight is the same, people are nudged to go outside as they perceive there to be an extra

to handling their own money, people are very irresponsible. Piggy banks are meant to help nudge us to
save money. It is very easy to put money into a piggy bank, but it is a pain to take the money out. This
is a nudge to make the people not take the money out. One similar situation is a savings account a

Money will continue to be deposited, but won t be withdrawn until the child is 18 and can use it for

use it for anything. Yet this fungibility can be violated. Money can be compartmentalized into
different budgets for different things. People will set aside a certain amount of money for one purpose,
they will only withdraw for that specific purpose. This violated the fungibility of money as it can now

Coercive Acts and Quebec Act
Coercive Acts and Quebec Act The Coercive Acts and the Quebec Acts were British responses to
actions that were taking place in the British colonies in America. The Coercive Acts were a series of
four acts passed during the spring of 1774. The Boston Port Act closed the port of Boston until the
people paid for all the tea that was thrown overboard during the Boston Tea Party. The amount of tea
thrown over was equal to more than seven hundred thousand dollars in the year 2007. Parliament also
passed a new Quartering Act, which allowed British troops to stay in the homes of the people of
Boston whenever they felt needed. The Administration of Justice Act allowed British officials and
soldiers to be tried for crimes they committedin another ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You can see how this would upset the colonist. The Quebec Act is the straw that broke the camels
back from an outsider sviewpoint. Quebec is allowed to rule themselves however the colonies rules
are not even coherent with the laws and rules of their governing body the Empire of England. Why
should one group of people be allowed to live their life how they seem fit when another group in the
same is is not allowed to do the same? This is not good business on the part of England and I can see
looking from an outsider s viewpoint how the colonies would be enraged by this. Business is tough to
do from a distance in the year 2009. In the 1700s when these laws were passed business must have
been pretty close to impossible to do over the Atlantic ocean with the only way to communicate is
through letter that is carried by a ship. When Britain gave freedom to Quebec the smart move would
have been to also grant the same rights to the American Colonies. Britain did not choose to do the
smart move and it cost them in war which ended up with Americans winning that right. Once a child is
old enough to stand on his own, let him stand. Once he is old enough to make a living for him let him
work. Once he says dad I am my own person let him be that person. Do not stand in the child s way
from progressing. The mighty power of Great Britain tried to stand in the way of their young and
growing colonies rather than let them be who

The Dark Ages And The Fall Of The Middle Ages
The Middle Ages or Medieval Ages is the time period in Europe between the fall of Rome and the
beginning of the Renaissance (History). For this paper it will be referred to as the Middle Ages. This
time is also sometimes described as the Dark Ages by some because of some of the bad events that
happened and because they say nothing of importance came out of the time period. It is true Rome
fell, there were many wars which caused many to die, a shortage of food that caused many to die and
an awful sickness that caused many people to die. Despite The Great Famine, The Plague and the fall
of Rome during the medieval time period, it should not be known as the dark ages due to the
architecture, art, and both educational and the technological advancements that came to be during this
time.
Was it the invasions of the Barbarian tribes, economic troubles, disputes on slave labor,
overexpansion, the military problems, government corruption, political instability, or the spread of
Christianity that took down the Rome Empire (History)? Many different reasons with many different
answers, however, the Roman Empire did fall and we were left with what we call the Middle Ages.
There have been many movies, books and papers written on the subject. One thing I find is a for sure
fact is that after the fall of Rome there was no state or government for the people in Europe and that s
how the Catholic Church became the most powerful institution in the Middle Age time
period(History).

Suicide And The Creative Class
Suicide has been a leading cause of death in the United States of America since 2009. It is the tenth
leading cause of death and has increased since 2008 by .9%. Additionally, suicide is in the top 15 of
leading deaths in 2009. Heart disease and diabetes which are also top leading deaths have decreased
from 2008 2009. The only cause of death to have increased from 2008 2009 in the US is suicide.
Yet, suicide also affects different kinds of individuals which happen to be of distinct racial and ethnic
status. The socioeconomic status also plays a role in determining the individuals who commit suicide.
In the article Suicide and the Creative Class, it states the following, Thus, different groups will be
more or less likely to commit suicide. These differences make suicide an important area of study for
social scientists because of its prevalence, preventability, and the wide sweeping effects that it has on
family, friends, and acquaintances of suicide victims (Moore, Recker, Heirigs, 2014). Thus,
implicating the pressures of society and the differences of social status.
Furthermore, social scientists have not been too involved in the topic of suicide. Since 1990 2009
there have not been many article on the topic and the disinterest can derive from the presumption that
suicide is a lonesome act. The article Suicide and the Creative Class, states that, Durkheim ([1897]
2006) illustrated that suicide is a social phenomenon by stating that levels of integration and

Canadian Culture And Identity
In understanding body politics and spatial struggles, one cannot neglect the concept of identity and
what it means. The history of modern Canada has its history deep in migration and settlement; from
the aboriginal peoples, to the French and later British. Over the years, discussions have entered
academia with the aim of defining an understanding Canadian culture and identity. This project was
aimed at finding artists who has work that deals with this and established themselves in this field.
Camille Turner considers herself to be a media/performance artist and she is also an educator. She
came up with the idea of Miss Canadiana after a self conscious episode, where she was concerned
about the perception of her identity as a black Canadian.

Through The Tunnel Symbolism
In Through the Tunnel, the author, Doris Lessing, writes about a vacation of a widow and her son
named Jerry. Lessing turns Jerry s and his mother s relaxing vacation into a serious one with the tools
of symbolism to unveil the hidden message of the rocky bay and the tunnel, vivid imagery of the
tunnel, as well as similes and personification regarding Jerry s attitude towards the adventure;
moreover, the author creates an overall tone of determination and wonder to help construct the well
known theme of never giving up.
It is safe to assume the rocky bay and the tunnel both symbolize very important aspects in this short
story. The rocky bay could be said to symbolize a turning point in Jerry s life. In the first paragraph,
Jerry looked down at a wild and rocky bay, and then over the crowded beach he knew ... Show more

After Jerry had watched the older boys go through the tunnel and leave the bay, he was left alone
again. He then dived back in among the fanged and angry boulders, (3). This personification
emphasizes a negative connotation that shows how frustrated Jerry is at this point in his adventure. He
felt like he boys were leaving to get away from him, (3), which only further supports the notion that he
feels alone and has no clue what to do. However, after he decides to get goggles, he ran right back and
dived into the bay once more. While he was negative towards the whole ordeal before, the following
simile reveals a different tone: Now, he could see. It was as if he had eyes of a different kind, fish eyes
that showed everything clear and delicate and wavering in the bright water, (3). The fact that he is now
describing things as clear and delicate shows a more positive connotation which can suggest that Jerry
was not as frustrated after that. He felt as if he got some of his composure and control back and is
ready to continue on his

My client is a 36 year old Hispanic female. She has a five pack year history. Her health history stated
she suffers anxiety but currently is not receiving medical treatment for her condition. The patient s
psychosocial state appeared very anxious with increased respirations of
23 breaths per minute, heart rate of 102 and tightly grasping rosary in her hands. She mentioned to the
nurse that she was afraid to go back to surgery again . Waiting for surgery can result in increased stress
hormones during the preoperative period and may show as increased heart rate, blood pressure and
sugar levels (Selimen Andsoy, 2011).The client was informed that it was common to be anxious and
asked if there were any special concerns. She requested to bring her cross into surgery with her, and
the nurse confirmed that she could. The client s anxiety appeared to decrease. The nurse also reminded
the client she would receive medications to help alleviate her anxiety.
My client underwent a three hour Open Reduction Internal Fixation of the Fibula and
Tibia, which is a surgical procedure that repairs and maintains a fracture (Smeltzer, Bare, Hinkle
Cheever, 2010). After proper identification and scrubbing of the effected extremity the

Csr Continues To Gain Awareness As Globalization Offers
CSR continues to gain awareness as globalization offers new challenges and opportunities for
businesses to ensure a difference in their communities. Consequently, as Target continues to increase
its efforts toward CSR activities to remain competitive, so does its competitors. For example, similar
companies that compete directly with Target include Walmart and Costco. However, Target s
consistent activities toward CSR are in line with its competitors (See Table 3). Therefore, to maintain
its competitive advantage, Target must continue to review its business and societal issues. For
instance, it should work with its stakeholders, as well as its team members, customers, and partners to
gauge where Target can drive and contribute to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Success in this new Responsible Sourcing vision will require making sustainable efforts to collaborate
and communicate with upstream suppliers, encouraging the kind of innovation and change needed to
make safe products (Ley, 2017b). Target has $5m earmarked for green chemistry by 2022 , but will
have to eventually increase this, if the company wishes to show a stronger commitment to this new
CSR strategy (Ley, 2017a). A bid to render transparency a key aspect of the responsible sourcing
strategy will require improving the assessment and reporting aspects of CSR initiatives (Ley, 2017).
As a result, this will necessitate investing in analytics professionals/software and digital reporting
tools necessary to render a fair assessment of its CSR progress. Transparency will be essential because
people now care what they put on and around their bodies; about what s in their products (Ley,
2017b). The responsible thing to do is for Target to leverage stakeholder engagement by adjusting the
content, format, and frequency of the company s CSR reports. The company should be using positive
CSR information, as a global publicity tool if it wants to be a global leader in CSR. Improve the CSR
Process Continuous improvement is necessary for managing CSR because corporate, social and
technological changes happen over time. Target will, therefore,

Analysis Of Albert Camus s The Plague
Within everyone s life illness is present, however when an epidemic occurs, the way a population
copes with the tragedy can vary drastically. Throughout Albert Camus s The Plague, people like
M.Michel, Cottard and Paneloux underestimate the severity of their situation, showing that the people
of Oran often miscalculate how dire their case is, or blame it on outside factors, such as other people s
actions; however, it s this underestimation and denial that forces them to realize that sometimes events
cannot be avoided or explained. While only being in the novel for 21 pages, Monsieur Michel is one
of the first people within the novel to deny a major event s severity. This is first seen when Rieux finds
the first dead rat. Rieux doesn t think much of it until he finds the outraged concierge, saying There
weren t no rats... in the building,... so someone must have brought this one from outside (Camus 8).
This immediate rejection of the obvious foreshadows that characters within this book try to avoid
situations that are not favorable for them. In this case, the concierge denies having rodents within his
building, because having dead animals in a building would likely deter future residents. Because
Michel fears his income source being impaired, he places the blame on children without having
sufficient evidence. This blame continues when three more dead animals are found within the hallway,
with the concierge mentioning that it must be the children again. The worry created

Developmental Social Work Essay
Developmental social work is emerging as a new paradigm in social work internationally that seeks to
infuse social developmental theory and practice into social work processes (Midgley and Conley,
2010; Patel, 2005a). The growth of poverty in some regions of the world, the growing and wide
ranging social development issues and challenges continue to form the development dissertation
globally. Clearly, social work cannot be separated from the broader changing aspects of development.
Social workers have the facts, skills and value framework needed to take on this challenge, the major
obstacle being whether or not social workers consider growth an effective method of practice and
context of social work activity.
While social workers cannot stop

Trying to Understand Bundling
Bundling: Bundling is a term that refers to the process of transportation of goods belonging to various
flows in a common vehicle intermodal unit such as truck, train or barge or other segments during part
of their journey. As a result, this process is a major business of the transportation sector given that
operators occasionally examine their service networks and change their bundling operations. The
adjustments made in bundling operations are usually a reaction to changing cost structures, situations,
and competition with regards to the requirements of demand and performance. During the
adjustments, the operators basically change the bundling type, extent of network concentration,
frequency of service, vehicle load, and utilized physical means (Kreutzberger, 2010, p.160). Generally,
the major factors for adjustments are changes in flow directions and sizes and the operator s share in
the market. According to market players in the maritime transport, inland logistics are one of the most
significant segments still enhancing economic signals in order to add value and enhance profitability.
Bundling is regarded as one of the most probable solutions on ways to enhance the intermodal
transport and could also improve competitiveness. As a result, the concept or process enables
resolving suitable intermodal conditions since it can be utilized in situations where container flows are
not economically adequate to meet the needs of a direct service. Bundling process is

People from around the world came to find gold for themselves and strike it rich. People left their belongings and their families behind for a chance to find gold. Many people who came to California did not find gold and lost most of their money. Before this California was relatively small in population. Many towns in California that were small turned into boomtowns. Boomtowns were cities which population grew exponentially. San Francisco had a population of 200 residents and then grew to over 30,000 people during the gold rush. With all the people coming in, violence, gangs, prostitution, and land destruction arose. He says he is a bandit. With the spur of the gold rush, many different ethnic groups came to one area. At first there was little racism. Late on, people began to act against each other. They committed hate crimes against the other races. Each ethnic group made their own communities to protect themselves and stay together. Although racism played a big part in the gold rush, some people still managed to stay together and look past ethnic backgrounds. A good example of this is Elzia and Tao. Thus, when asked How would you say whether a person is ignorant or not? , their answers also vary. As I asked this question in my interviews, Jason Leiter said that he would value, Awareness of political events, diversity of the world (Leiter), whereas Cansu Åženocak, a Turkish Math teacher, suggested that she would value How many areas is that person knowledgeable about (Senocak). As another example, in popular religious beliefs, ignorant people are the ones that do not accept God s guidance. It isn t about whether you know many languages, learned many sciences and read many books; ignorance has a direct connection with God. In Islam, for example, the name Jahiliyyah was used to describe the pre Islamic period in Saudi Arabia, and the word can be literally translated as Age of Ignorance as jahili means ignorant (Jahiliyyah). Upton Sinclair and the Chicago Meat-Packing Industry Upton Sinclair and the Chicago Meat packing Industry In 1900, there were over 1.6 million people living in Chicago, the country s second largest city. Of those 1.6 million, nearly 30% were immigrants. Most immigrants came to the United States with little or no money at all, in hope of making a better life for themselves. A city like Chicago offered these people jobs that required no skill. However, the working and living conditions were hazardous and the pay was barely enough to survive on. Critics view Sinclair as a muckraker, a talented progressive journalist and reformer with no literary technique whatsoever. Although Sinclair s accurate descriptions were amazing, he fell short in his character development and plot. The main character, Jurgis Rudkus, went through an implausible number of extreme changes in the period of time the story takes place. He morphs from a pure hearted family man, to an alcoholic tramp, a beggar, a criminal, a player in machine politics, and finally a sober, hard core member of the Socialist Party. The other characters are hardly worth mentioning. Readers really don t care much about them because they are so under developed. Much like the main character, the plot is all over the place, yet it doesn t seem to go anywhere. There is no hope for the characters in The Jungle. Anytime things start to get better for them, something else comes along to bring them back down. It s a constant rollercoaster ride between death and existence. The problem with the plot is most noticeable in the last four chapters of the book. • 11. Analysis Of Sweat By Zora Neale Hurston Everybody s good when they re good, darling. You don t judge a person by that. It s how they act when things aren t good that tells you who they really are. ― Megan Jacobson (Goodreads, 56 Quotes ) Much like the world around us, literature has many elements that have the reader portray their own understanding and perspective of it. In Sweat, Zora Neale Hurston gives the reader many different situations where many readers can have several viewpoints. This seems to be very similar to the Bible, where a child of God can read the same scripture as another and have a completely different meaning in their eyes. Zora Hurston uses many elements that focus on the idea that actions one does speak louder than words, by the use of religious imagery and Delia, the wife. Sweat s narrator point of view is told in third person omniscient, meaning the narrator switches from character to character constantly and does not restrict the reader to one character s perspective. Hurston uses this element to introduce us to each of the characters daily life and their belief in Christianity. Not only does it give us each character s standpoint, but also clarification of an outside view and provide the reader with additional information and background of the married couple. To begin the story, Hurston, with the use of the narrator being from third person omniscient, introduces us to Delia as a wash woman who was working on a Sunday night all the way until eleven o clock after church earlier in the ... Although universally high toxicity has been attributed to vanadium [Bhatnagar, 2004 and Liu et al., 2005], nickel is generally not far behind [Salnikow et al., 2004 and Kurowska Bal, 2010]. Nickel is a primary contributor to the inhalation cancer risk because of its relative high concentration in fly ash and the known carcinogenic potency of its sub sulfide forms (Ni3S2) [Dreher et al., 1997]. Huang et al. (2015) suggest, that oil fly ash surface metals (like vanadium) may be the key determinants in the induction and/or amplification of allergic responses. The metal fraction of oil ashes has been shown, in both in vivo and in vitro studies, to increase lung injury and cytotoxicity (Dreher et al., 1997; Dye et al., 1999; Gavett et al., 1997; Kodavanti et al., 1998; 2001), increase lung inflammation (Kodavanti et al., 1998; 2001), increase airway reactivity (Gavett et al., 1997; Lambert et al., 2000), alter cytokine production (Dye et al., 1999; Carter et al., 1997), and increase oxidative stress (Ghio et al., 2002b; Kim et al., 2003; Lewis et al., 2003) Kadiiska et al. (1997) reported that the vanadium, nickel and iron in oil ashes produced a significant influx of neutrophils and proteins indicative of acute inflammation, and significant increases in the formation of free radicals in rates. Racism In The Kite Runner Racism and discrimination were incredibly prominent in Afghanistan at the time of the writing/publishing of The Kite Runner and is still prominent today, not only in some parts of Afghanistan but also around the world. No matter how much the modern world molds their views to become more and more open and tolerant, people still discriminate against others due to their looks and beliefs. Hosseini portrays these conditions of racism and discrimination in The Kite Runner through interactions between Amir and his servant friend Hassan, and also through interactions between Hassan and others, who is often the victim of racist actions and dialogue. The socioeconomic conditions in Afghanistan during this time show the inequality between the majority (Sunni Muslims/Pashtuns in this case) and the minority (Shi a Muslims/Hazaras) and how people discriminate against each other based on how they look and what their religious beliefs are. Amir, at the beginning of the book, has a decent life. He is the young son of a wealthy man and has a great friend in a boy named Hassan. He is a Sunni Muslim and a Pashtun, both being the majority in Afghanistan where he lived. Hassan, though, was not so lucky. He was born from a Hazara mother and father, the minority during this time. In simple words: Communication is the meaningful exchange of information between two or more participants (human and non human) through sounds, gestures, movements, etc., those things constituent isolated signals to transmit very specific messages. On the other hand, Language is the human capacity for acquiring and using complex systems of communication. The term Universal Grammar is the name that Noam Chomsky gives, as the very name implies, to those grammatical features that are shared by all derivations of human language. The ability to use grammatically accurate sentences is a natural process and can be done without being taught. It is part of human cognitive ability because UG itself determines what abilities are innate and what are shared or experience by human. UG defines that if a child is brought up under normal ... One way to approach this concept is posing a hypothetical question: Why does a child learn the language the way it does? This means that natural language grammar is unlearnable given the relatively limited data available to children learning a language, and therefore that this knowledge is supplemented with some sort of innate linguistic capacity. And also humans are born with a specific representational adaptation for language that both funds and limits their competence to acquire specific types of natural languages over the course of their cognitive development and linguistic ... While it may be expected to be a poem about a glory filled war that the great heroes and even mighty Gods of Olympus get entangled within, there are messages and references to the pity and extreme loss that war brings. The ten year war began when Agamemnon, the King of Mycenae launched a fleet to Troy in order to retrieve Helen, who had been kidnapped from Menelaus by the Trojan prince Paris. The tides of war keep changing throughout the poem as the immortal gods of Mount Olympus intervene and even butt heads against each other on several occasions, which shows how war can bring even brothers and sisters against one another. • 21. Cardiac Output ( Co ) Cardiac Output (CO) is defined as the volume of blood pumped out by the heart, specifically by the left and right ventricle, per unit time (usually in 1 minute). It is the product of Stroke Volume (SV) and Heart Rate (HR) [1]. CO = SV x HR Jessica s pre exercise cardiac output can therefore be calculated as 70ml x 70bpm = 4900ml/min or 4.9L/min, whilst her post exercise cardiac output is 110ml x 130bpm = 14.3L/min. In an adult at rest, the average cardiac output is 4.9L/min for a human female and 5.6L/min for a male [2]. Throughout normal life, however, cardiac output can vary continuously depending on the metabolic demands of the body. As seen with Jessica, cardiac output may be raised during exercise, and may also be reduced, for example in sleep [3]. Stroke volume is the amount of blood pumped out from a ventricle in one heartbeat, and is dependent on several factors such as heart size, contraction duration, contractility, preload, and afterload [1]. Stroke volume can be calculated as the difference between the volume of blood in the ventricle just before a heartbeat (end diastolic volume; EDV) and the volume following contraction (end systolic volume; ESV) [4]. SV = EDV ESV Average stroke volume is around 70ml (in a healthy 70kg man; with approximately 120ml and 50ml measurements for EDV and ESV, respectively) [4]. Jessica s stroke volume is also 70ml, which increases (as expected) to 110ml following exercise, achieved by a drop in ESV due to a more complete emptying ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There was a male figure who came and went a few times, but he didn t seem to have any attachment to the other two children. In Sarah Barns view, Vegans and vegetarians typically have... a lower risk of death from heart disease, and lower overall cancer rates. Science and research confirms that you don t need meat to be healthy at all, in fact statistics point to quite the opposite ( Live Longer, Boost Immunity, Slim Down: 10 Reasons Why You Should Go Vegan In 2015, Daily Express par. 3). Basically, Sarah Barns is saying that having a vegan or vegetarian diet will decrease the chances of dying from heart disease. This demonstrates that dying from heart disease is prevented by having a lack of unhealthy fat in the body. Unhealthy fat gets trapped in the arteries, which clogs them. When the arteries are clogged, it can lead to a heart attack or a stroke. Clearly, having a vegan diet will contribute to the prevention of heart disease. Hope Warshaw, Registered Dietitian Nutritionists and Certified Diabetes Educator states, A study of nearly 100,000 members of the Seventh day Adventist church, which promotes a vegetarian diet, showed that the vegetarians had a lower rate of type 2 than nonvegetarians. ( Should You Go Vegetarian? The Benefits of a Plant Based Diet for People with Diabetes par. 3). Also, Michael J. • 25. Humanistic Therapy Theory The therapeutic approach I have chosen to help Maggie overcome her depression is humanistic therapy. I chose humanistic therapy because first, I like the idea of creating a relationship with your client to enhance their self worth. Second, I like how the therapist genuinely cares about the patient and doesn t necessarily have to prescribe medications or just see their patient as another dollar sign. The humanistic approach is different than the psychodynamic approach because humanist tend to listen to what their patients have to say and the patient will direct where the therapy session will lead. However, a psychodynamic therapist already has a conversation thought out and he or she will determine where the therapy session will go. As a humanistic therapist, the main issues I need to discuss is her work life, attitudes towards friends or loved ones, and her inner thoughts. To start off, the first red flag that I see observing Maggie s case is her occupation. She is said to always strive for the best when it comes to being a medical resident. However, continuously doing work without having time for herself could be a real problem sanity wise. Furthermore, she has been with irritable and snippy to her coworkers especially her husband. If she continues this behavior she might lose a bond with her work colleagues and loved ones. Lastly, her personal thoughts about her performance or behavior could be draining on a person with depression. When these negative thoughts continue to circulate especially with her condition it could influence her to distance herself and probably push her to suicide. The humanistic approach would view and understand by looking at the person from a whole perspective, instead of a specific point of view shown through sessions by observing their behavior. Humanists view Maggie s depression as what is holding her back from becoming the best version of herself. Humanists would believe that Maggie s depression is a result of her inability to cope with personal circumstances or her inability to have balance in her life. Humanists would understand her depression by listening to her thoughts and feelings. Maggie is the conductor of the conversation and humanistic therapists are the listeners ... • 27. King Buchadnezzar 2 Research Paper King Nebuchadnezzar II (634 562 BCE) was the greatest king of ancient Babylon, succeeding his father, Nabopolassar. King Nabopolassar had defeated the Assyrians with the help of the Medes and liberated Babylonia from Assyrian rule. In this way he provided for his son (as Philip II would do for his son Alexander later) a stable base and ample wealth on which to build an opportunity for greatness which Nebuchadnezzar took full advantage of. Nebuchadnezzar II defeated the Egyptians and their allies the Assyrians at Carchemish, subdued Palestine and the region of Syria and, consolidating his power, controlled all the trade routes across Mesopotamia from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea. Remaining true to the vision of his inaugural address, the great king spent the tolls he collected and the taxes he gathered in creating a city which, he hoped, would be recognized as a wonder of the world (and, indeed, his hopes were realized in later writers adding the walls of Babylon and, in particular, the Ishtar gate to the list of the Seven Wonders of the World). In the forty three years of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar II made the most of the time employing a vast army of slave labor to surround his city with walls so thick that chariot races were conducted around the tops and which stretched fifty six miles in length, encircling an area of two hundred square miles. ... It is one of the most effective anti neoplastic drug that is used in the treatment of several neoplasias such as lung, ovarian, bladder and testicular cancers 1. It was synthesised in 1844 by M. However, it did not attain any scientific importance until 1965, when Rosenberg, Vancamp et al at Michigan State University discovered that platinum electrodes were able to inhibit cell division of Escherichia Coli bacteria. This discovery led to a further investigation of cisplatin effects on cell division in different tumor cells. At that time the only option companies had was to utilized passenger routes to ship packages, which was not very efficient for time sensitive deliveries. Six years later after Smith left the military he bought a small company and experienced how difficult it was to get supplies delivered within a couple of days. Most people will eat what is in front of them. If a plate of food were to be placed in front of someone, they will continue to eat even once they aren t even hungry. This is because eating is a mindless activity. So, portion control is very important in regard to obesity. During the summer when we change the clock from 8:00 to 9:00, it nudges people to wake up early and enjoy the extra hour of sunshine. Even though the amount of sunlight is the same, people are nudged to go outside as they perceive there to be an extra hour. 4. Explain why piggy banks are nudges. Often people lack self control. Especially when it comes to handling their own money, people are very irresponsible. Piggy banks are meant to help nudge us to save money. It is very easy to put money into a piggy bank, but it is a pain to take the money out. This is a nudge to make the people not take the money out. One similar situation is a savings account a parent has for a child. The money in the savings account can not be withdrawn until the child turns 18. Money will continue to be deposited, but won t be withdrawn until the child is 18 and can use it for college. 5. Explain how one can violate the fungibility of money. Money is fungible because you can use it for anything. Yet this fungibility can be violated. Money can be compartmentalized into different budgets for different things. People will set aside a certain amount of money for one purpose, they will only withdraw for that specific purpose. This violated the fungibility of money as it can now only be used for that one ... • 40. Edmond Rostand s Cyrano De Bergerac Dramatist, Edmond Rostand, in his play, Cyrano de Bergerac, illustrates the central character s ceaseless honor conflicting with doubts within himself. Rostand s purpose is to show that morality and principles are strived for until the end, emphasized with the inclusion of the white scarf. Rostand adopts a comical yet tragic tone in order to describe the situations where honor is seen at high value, but has the potential to accrue danger. The white scarf lays emphasis on the differences between De Guiche and Cyrano s character. For example, when De Guiche comes back to the cadets without his white plume, Cyrano responds, Possibly... • 41. Coercive Acts and Quebec Act Coercive Acts and Quebec Act The Coercive Acts and the Quebec Acts were British responses to actions that were taking place in the British colonies in America. The Coercive Acts were a series of four acts passed during the spring of 1774. The Boston Port Act closed the port of Boston until the people paid for all the tea that was thrown overboard during the Boston Tea Party. The amount of tea thrown over was equal to more than seven hundred thousand dollars in the year 2007. Parliament also passed a new Quartering Act, which allowed British troops to stay in the homes of the people of Boston whenever they felt needed. You can see how this would upset the colonist. The Quebec Act is the straw that broke the camels back from an outsider sviewpoint. Quebec is allowed to rule themselves however the colonies rules are not even coherent with the laws and rules of their governing body the Empire of England. Why should one group of people be allowed to live their life how they seem fit when another group in the same is is not allowed to do the same? This is not good business on the part of England and I can see looking from an outsider s viewpoint how the colonies would be enraged by this. Business is tough to do from a distance in the year 2009. In the 1700s when these laws were passed business must have been pretty close to impossible to do over the Atlantic ocean with the only way to communicate is through letter that is carried by a ship. When Britain gave freedom to Quebec the smart move would have been to also grant the same rights to the American Colonies. Britain did not choose to do the smart move and it cost them in war which ended up with Americans winning that right. Once a child is old enough to stand on his own, let him stand. Once he is old enough to make a living for him let him work. Once he says dad I am my own person let him be that person. Do not stand in the child s way from progressing. • 42. The Dark Ages And The Fall Of The Middle Ages The Middle Ages or Medieval Ages is the time period in Europe between the fall of Rome and the beginning of the Renaissance (History). For this paper it will be referred to as the Middle Ages. This time is also sometimes described as the Dark Ages by some because of some of the bad events that happened and because they say nothing of importance came out of the time period. It is true Rome fell, there were many wars which caused many to die, a shortage of food that caused many to die and an awful sickness that caused many people to die. Despite The Great Famine, The Plague and the fall of Rome during the medieval time period, it should not be known as the dark ages due to the architecture, art, and both educational and the technological advancements that came to be during this time. Was it the invasions of the Barbarian tribes, economic troubles, disputes on slave labor, overexpansion, the military problems, government corruption, political instability, or the spread of Christianity that took down the Rome Empire (History)? Many different reasons with many different answers, however, the Roman Empire did fall and we were left with what we call the Middle Ages. There have been many movies, books and papers written on the subject. One thing I find is a for sure fact is that after the fall of Rome there was no state or government for the people in Europe and that s how the Catholic Church became the most powerful institution in the Middle Age time period(History). Lessing turns Jerry s and his mother s relaxing vacation into a serious one with the tools of symbolism to unveil the hidden message of the rocky bay and the tunnel, vivid imagery of the tunnel, as well as similes and personification regarding Jerry s attitude towards the adventure; moreover, the author creates an overall tone of determination and wonder to help construct the well known theme of never giving up. It is safe to assume the rocky bay and the tunnel both symbolize very important aspects in this short story. The rocky bay could be said to symbolize a turning point in Jerry s life. He felt like he boys were leaving to get away from him, (3), which only further supports the notion that he feels alone and has no clue what to do. However, after he decides to get goggles, he ran right back and dived into the bay once more. While he was negative towards the whole ordeal before, the following simile reveals a different tone: Now, he could see. It was as if he had eyes of a different kind, fish eyes that showed everything clear and delicate and wavering in the bright water, (3). The fact that he is now describing things as clear and delicate shows a more positive connotation which can suggest that Jerry was not as frustrated after that. • 48. Analysis Of Albert Camus s The Plague Within everyone s life illness is present, however when an epidemic occurs, the way a population copes with the tragedy can vary drastically. Throughout Albert Camus s The Plague, people like M.Michel, Cottard and Paneloux underestimate the severity of their situation, showing that the people of Oran often miscalculate how dire their case is, or blame it on outside factors, such as other people s actions; however, it s this underestimation and denial that forces them to realize that sometimes events cannot be avoided or explained. While only being in the novel for 21 pages, Monsieur Michel is one of the first people within the novel to deny a major event s severity. This is first seen when Rieux finds the first dead rat. Rieux doesn t think much of it until he finds the outraged concierge, saying There weren t no rats... in the building,... so someone must have brought this one from outside (Camus 8). This immediate rejection of the obvious foreshadows that characters within this book try to avoid situations that are not favorable for them. In this case, the concierge denies having rodents within his building, because having dead animals in a building would likely deter future residents. Because Michel fears his income source being impaired, he places the blame on children without having sufficient evidence. This blame continues when three more dead animals are found within the hallway, with the concierge mentioning that it must be the children again. The worry created ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
