Bottoms V. Bottom Case Summary
There is no lack of discrimination in the world today. In 1993, the situation was even worse. LGBT
discrimination was one of the worst. The Supreme Court case Bottoms v. Bottoms is an excellent
example of that. This case features a child custody dispute between a lesbian mother and a
homophobic grandmother on the basis of the mother s sexuality. Why is the fitness of a mother not
being determined by her actions but by her sexuality? This case changed the views of how
homosexual mothers and fathers should be judged as parents and their capabilities. As a result of this
case, a mother ended up childless and an entire community was hurt by this judges ruling. 1993 had
very different societal views than 2017. Laws protecting LGBT people were ... Show more content on

During this time, the court took many testimonies from many people, including Tyler s father, Dennis
Doustou. He stated that Kay was totally wrong to take Tyler from his mother. (Anderson Minshall
n.p.) Psychologists looked into Sharon and April s household to determine their fitness as caretakers
and how them being in a homosexual relationship would physically and emotionally affect Tyler. It
was found that a person s sexual orientation does not bear a relation to that person s fitness as a parent.
(McHugh et al. n.p.) It is also stated that many children do not encounter harassment for having
homosexual parents. If any harassment occur, it tends to be harmless verbal teasing. (McHugh et al.
n.p.) It is said that courts considering what is the best interests of the child with a lesbian or gay parent
have viewed the homosexual as a mentally ill person or as a child molester, (Ronner 343) when in
actuality being raised by a homosexual couple does not have any emotional differences then if the
child were raised in a heterosexual household. ( Bottoms v. Bottoms n.p.) Despite this fact Sharon was
granted custody of Tyler, but lost it to Kay once again when the Supreme Court of Virginia took the

Salmonell A Common Bacteria
The importance of doing this investigation was necessary as this microorganism, Salmonella is a
common bacteria encountered in daily life. Salmonella is a bacterium that is found in a wide variety of
animals and mammals (Weese and Fulford, 2011). Gram negative bacteria exhibit appendages on
outer surfaces known as pili (Lo et al., 2014). The pili is also named fimbriae, these are chains of
protein that form filaments that extend from the outer surface of bacterial cells enabling them to
adhere to any host target cell (Proft and Baker, 2009; Kang and Baker, 2012). This makes the pili of
clinical importance when assessing clinical manifestation; particularly in pathogenic organisms, when
developing drugs such as vaccines (Kang and Baker, 2012). Currently, the use of pili in vaccine
development is widespread in research (Wizeman et al, 1999). This suggests that the pilus is the basic
structural subunit in all bacterial cells. Studying Salmonella is vital in understanding how SafD
operates and possible clinical problems posed to individuals, due to the different strains of the
bacterium that have been previously discovered. Although Salmonella has been identified and
classified into different classifications, it has undergone multiple changes and the main nomenclature
system is yet to be established (Chiu, Lin Hui, 2014). The genus which Salmonella belongs to is
known as the Enterobacteriaceae family (Chu and Su, 2004; Farmer, 1995). Salmonella is a gram

Essay about Narrative of Life of Frederick Douglass
Published in 1845, Narrative of life of Frederick Douglass an American slave written by himself is
still the most highly acclaimed American autobiography ever written. It was published seven years
after Douglass escaped from his life as a slave in Maryland. It describes his experience of being slave
and his psychological insights into the slave master relationship. The main focus is on How he learn to
read and write and the pain of slavery. The goal of this paper is to bring more insight analysis of his
narrative life through the most famous two chapter s in which he defines, How he learn to read and
write and The pain of slavery. To achieve this goal, the paper is organized into four main sections.
First, author background and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Analysis Douglass s Narrative displays how white slaveholders continue slavery by keeping their
slaves uninformed. At the time Douglass was writing, many people thought that slavery was a normal
state of being. They believed that blacks were naturally incapable of participating in civil society and
thus should be kept as labors for whites. The Narrative explains the tactics and measures by which
whites gain and keep power over blacks from their birth onward. Slave owners keep slaves
uninformed of basic facts about themselves, such as their birth date or their parents. This enforced
ignorance deprives children of their natural sense of distinct identity. As slave children grow up, slave
owners prevent them from learning to read and write, as learning would give them a sense of self
sufficiency and capability. Slave masters understand that knowledge would lead slaves to question the
right of whites to keep slaves. Lastly, by keeping slaves illiterate, Southern slave masters maintain
control over what the rest of America knows about slavery. If slaves cannot write, their picture of the
slavery story cannot be told. Wendell Phillips states this point in his prefatory letter to the Narrative.
Just as slave masters keep people as slaves by depriving them of knowledge and education, slaves
need to seek knowledge and education in order to track freedom. It is from Hugh Auld that Douglass
learns this idea that knowledge should be the way to

Introduction The purpose of this report is to present a strategic plan created for Chipotle Mexican
Grill, Inc. (CMG). The strategic planning process began with an internal analysis to better understand
Chipotle s current mission and vision statement, and its effectiveness in leading current strategy and
performance, and included analysis of Chipotle s strengths and weaknesses, and trending financial
position. External environment analysis was also conducted, to better understand the industry and its
competitors. Results of the internal and external analysis were used to determine strategies for

One can only assume that Chipotle uses concentration strategies for their corporate level strategies,
because they only concentrate on the restaurant industry. Market penetration and market development
is their main focus, as they are attracting new customers as they increase brand awareness through
their business strategies and their Food With Integrity campaign, Farmed and Dangerous live action
story telling comedy series, and Cultivate Foundation, which is a non profit organization supporting
sustainable agriculture, family farming and food education, and they are expanding into new markets
with international expansion, so Chipotle can continue to change the way people think about and eat
fast food (Chipotle, 2015). Chipotle also, uses product development , but not as aggressively as market
penetration. The most recent product development is a meat alternative made from tofu, called Sofritas
. Chipotle is highly invested in Pizzeria Locale, suggesting the possibility of horizontal integration in
the near future, and is using an adjacent strategy with its sister restaurant ShopHouse Southeast Asian

Vincent Van Gogh s The Starry Night
A very popular work of art by Vincent Van Gogh would be The Starry Night. Vincent Van Gogh
depicted a night in the town as a symbolic image of emotion with the exploding stars, a night where
one can dream, and the comfort of others as homes are brightly lit. Through this painting, Vincent van
Gogh expresses personal insight and feelings through it. Van Gogh had a mental illness and it said that
between seizures, he would do these paintings because it allowed him to have great clarity. Van Gogh
painted The Starry Night by memory and his work symbolize his great illness and a moment of sanity
since he was at Saint Remy during the time he painted this portraying what he saw from the window
of his bedroom. During the time this painting was made, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The different shapes throughout the painting like the stars and the houses as well as the colors
expressed in the sky and in the dark hillsides and the texture of the rich and thick strokes in the
painting create these Art Principles. Unity is shown in the painting as all the elements belong together
and fit with one another to create a harmonious whole. The bright yellow blue night sky is filled with
stars and movement around it which guides the viewer s eyes in the same movement as the lines go
not only in the sky but in the hills. The hills are moving upward and then downwards onto the brightly
lit buildings repeating harmoniously in the painting. The variety of the orange color is seen in the stars
and moon and in some of the houses represented as a light. Patterns are seen in the skylines and stars
as they move across. Asymmetrical balance is seen in the work of art because even with the patterns,
the right and left sides are not the same because of the different and variety of elements that balance
together based on their meaning. The large moon in the painting is where you look at the longest
because of its size which draws attention to the stars around it balance it. The small yellow stars
balance out the dark and large blue sky because the warm dark blue color is heavier than the cool
yellow color. The focal point of the painting would be attention grabber which is the big moon
position in the top right corner with its bright colors of orange yellow and its big size to call attention
to it. The stars in the midnight blue sky show the subordination of the painting since there is lesser
interest in those areas. Eyes are drawn from left to right in direction to the focal point of the painting
like a force that shows the path the viewer s eyes need to follow which is provided by the swirling

Reach And Teach Case Study
The school to prison pipeline is a barrier in education due to lack of communication and sound
policies. The school policy should entail strategies to implement the reach and teach method to
minimize some of the on going distractions in the school environment. School discipline continues to
rise in many counties due to the lack of self discipline. In order for us to be able to reach and teach
students, we as adults must be able to communicate with each other without looking at the titles.
Subsequently, we need to accept ideas and focus on the main goals instead of contending with each
other. Working together to reach and teach is a great effort to move forward.
The Reach and Teach method is design to shape the behaviors to prepare students for the real world.
This method allows students to take accountability and responsibility for their behavior. This
intervention strategy will minimize some of the school violations within our schools. It also provides
positive reinforcement to redirect the behavior.

Human Cloud Essay
Over the last decade, the human cloud has become a staple of doing business. Companies from main
street to wall street can quickly find extremely talented subcontractors online, from anywhere in the
world, at a very reasonable price. For this reason, it has become increasingly difficult to trade
competitively without crowdsourcing, or accessing the human cloud. The human cloud, a term used to
describe the online, talentsourcing ecosystem that has emerged over the last decade or so, revolves
around online middlemen, such as Upwork , that engage a virtual pool of workers from around the
world that can be tapped, on demand, to provide a broad range of services to any interested buyer

2012). As the world becomes more global, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
2).
All these advantages notwithstanding, the challenges of leveraging the human cloud should not be
taken lightly. Perhaps the most notable downside to international trade would be the sophistication of
communication required to manage cloud workers.
Virtual organizations can speed up cycle time, but they pose new challenges for managers on how to
manage remote workers. Communications technologies and the Web let employees work from
anywhere around the corner or around the world and require special attention to managing
communication (Carpenter, 2009, p. 62).
For the uninitiated, differences in culture, language and cross time zone coordination make the
managerial task formidable indeed.
Given this challenge, we wonder if there exists a set of principles for successfully leveraging the
human cloud? Here are three principles that managers of a distributed workforce can rely on to
successfully leverage the human cloud.
Principle #1: Inspire
Most workers want to be a part of an enterprise that matters. Current research suggests that in the
United States, the millennials generation, specifically, has a preference for social enterprises
(FerriReed,
J., 2014). As the global workforce ages, the advantage in

Juxtaposition In A Modern Proposal
Swift when faced with a humanitarian crisis, a tyrannical English Empire, and a strong divide between
social classes, uses his pent up agitation to develop a piece of satire which both compels and shocks
those who read his work. A Modern Proposal is centered around the idea of cannibalism. In Swift s
reformation of Irish society a new division of laborers would be created labeled breeders . These
breeders would raise infants to the ripe age of one, and then sell them to the wealthy to be slaughtered,
served and possibly made into apparel. Throughout his proposal Swift uses comic juxtaposition and
grotesque elements to further convey his criticism of Ireland. By comparing the lower class breeders
and their children to animals, Swift uses comic juxtaposition to hone in on the notion that the
impoverished people in society have long been denied the humanity the wealthy pride themselves on.
No longer being seen as meaningful, important human beings, the poor are left begging for the respect
that comes with money. Pregnant woman seen as being mere vessels for produce in his imaginary
world, are compared to cows saying Men would become as fond of their wives during the time of their
pregnancy as they are now of their mares in foal, their cows in calf, their sows when they are ready to
Farrow (5). By linking together items which normally do not go together, Swift is able to divulgue
into the responsibilities and vulnerabilities associated with womanhood. Swift futher s his

Martin Scoorsese s Influence On American Culture
Martin Scorsese is an award winning film director and writer, who has created culture shaping movies
over the past six decades. His work is dark, gritty, real, and sometimes misinterpreted, which lead to a

Scorsese wrote one of the most iconic movies in American history, Goodfellas . Goodfellas went on to
triumph. It won widespread critical acclaim, success at the box office and earned six Oscar
nominations. Twenty five years later, its recognition as a classic is near universal. Goodfellas didn t
just look authentic. For those who d led the Mafia life it had a definite sense of the real thing. Twenty
five years on, Goodfellas is more than just special, it s viewed as a real masterpiece, among the best
pictures of the 1990s and possibly the best movie Martin Scorsese has ever made (Tom Brook 2015).
Goodfellas has the same dark heart, understanding that even as the audience watches on with horror,
there s some tiny part of them that has completely surrendered to the madness and the fun. That was
Goodfellas s original genius and, even in retrospect, it seems impossible to equal (David Sims 2015).

stories over the years. In addition to writing Goodfellas , he wrote Mean Streets , The Age of

Foundations of Political Thought Essays
Aristotle and Socrates and Plato s beliefs have similarities mainly evident in their denouncement of
democracy for the state. The views of Socrates expressed and written by his pupil Plato are vastly
philosophical in nature and he promotes the idea of questioning life to achieve insight. The
philosophers who possess the absolute truth are the best equipped to rule society according to Plato
and his Allegory of the Cave. Conversely, Aristotle takes a more political science approach of
discussing and analyzing various constitutions to determine the best form of government, where the
rational beings in a society are the natural rulers. Aristotle promotes the idea of rule based on law
rather than simple superiority. The differences in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Politics, 83)
Through this view, Aristotle expresses his distrust of a total democracy that is parallel to the ideas of
his mentors. Plato attacks democracy and describes the disbursement of political freedom to the
masses as an intoxication of wine, claiming that a democratic city gets drunk on too much unmixed
freedom (The Republic, 220). Plato details the filtration of this drunkenness from society disobeying
rulers trickling down to the son disrespecting the father and eventually equal rights in relations
between the sexes (The Republic, 221). Plato and Aristotle share this skepticism of democracy.
The limitation of freedom, liberty, and equality not only with regards to mistrust of democracy but
also in terms of denial of citizenship and justification of slavery are commonalities in the teachings of
Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Plato accepts slavery throughout The Republic, because he often deems
whole groups of people unworthy of freedom. Aristotle s justifies slavery through the characteristic of
rationality; he claims that there is a condition of natural slavery where when one being is rational and
the other is not, there is a natural master slave relationship (Politics, 2). For if something is capable of
rational foresight, it is a natural ruler and master, whereas whatever can use its body to labor is ruled
and is a natural slave

Who Were The Phoenicians
Who Were the Phoenicians?
Thanks to the Phoenicians, this essay can be written and read. They created the first known alphabet;
in which some of the letters are still used in today s alphabet. The Phoenicians were not known for
being the big and strong empire, but for their many modern inventions. Much of what is known about
the Phoenicians comes from the Greek historian Herodotus who documented everything. Scientists
today, still do not know a lot about them, but that does not hinder their importance to the world.

The dye was so rare and expensive that only the rich could have it. Phoenicians were great traders and
traded all throughout the Mediterranean Sea. They traded anything and everything from things like

The Phoenicians invented a lot of devices that are used today. A huge example of that, would be the
alphabet. Before the Phoenician invention of the alphabet, past civilizations used hieroglyphics to
document information and send messages. The reasoning behind the invention was the large amount
of trading the Phoenicians did. They needed a way to track the things coming and going out of their
port and possession. Some of the letters they created, are still used everyday in the modern alphabet
like the letters b and d for example.
The alphabet isn t the only invention that is still used everyday. Another one of their inventions is the
number Zero. Again, it was created to help merchants track their trading. The Phoenicians were the
first to create bireme; which were fast galleys. They had the best quality boats for their time. Though
the Phoenicians were not the first to create glass molding, but they changed the way it was done; a
technique that is still used today. Glass workers from Phoenicia developed

Depp Vs. Wilder as Willy Wonka Essay
Johnny Wilder
The recent movie, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, was an immediate box office success. Johnny
Depp played a wonderful part as Willy Wonka in this movie. The book, originally published in 1964,
was first made into a movie in 1971. In this movie, Gene Wilder played a remarkable role of Willy
Wonka as well. Despite the many differences in the actors, both had huge success playing the role of
the wacky, chocolate loving Mr. Wonka.
One of the differences in the actors was age. The actors were similar in actual age when playing the
role, Johnny Depp being 42 and Gene Wilder being 38. The real difference is in the age portrayed by
the actors. While Wilder s portrayal made Wonka appear to be a distant and seemingly ... Show more

Despite their dislike of children, both Willy Wonka s showed a kind attitude towards Charlie Bucket.
At one point Wilder s character becomes angry with Charlie because he stole from the factory, but
Charlie s consideration towards Wonka leaves Wilder offering the factory to Charlie. Wilder is pleased
when Charlie accepts the heritage of his company. Depp s character does not seem to get angry with
Charlie at all through the movie, but Depp shows confusion for Charlie s care of family. Depp s
Wonka immediately offers Charlie the company, but does not invite his family. Charlie refuses the
offer because he wants to be with his family. Depp is left begging Charlie to overtake the factory.
After deep understanding Depp invites Charlie and his family into the factory. Charlie kindly accepts
his proposal.
The different wardrobes of the characters also show the difference in portrayal of Mr. Wonka. Depp s
wardrobe consists of a deep, dark maroon coat, with a black velvet top hat, while Wilder s wardrobe
consists of a bright violet coat, with a red velvet top hat. Depp appearance is overall darker due to his

Essay about Billy Liar
Billy Liar
The play Billy Liar was first produced in London on 13th September 1960. Originally a novel, it was
adapted by Willis Hall and Keith Waterhouse for performance.
Billy the main character in the performance lives in a lower middle class family and is subconsciously
trapped by their social class. Billy is an imaginative youth who indulges in daydreams and escapism,
but cannot fulfil his fantasies due to the restriction of his social culture.
In modern society Billy would have been more likely to fulfil his dreams as generally family and
social restrictions have changed since the 1960s and movement away from the family unit is more
accepted.
In the play Billy has the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

without listening to each other s point of view. Billy continues to say Sitting in a coffee bar. Espresso.
This shows that Billy s escapism leads him into the future but Florence also daydreams about the past.
In some ways the playwright bridges the differences by making these characters dreamers. The quote
shows that Billy knows how he wants people to see him and the way he lives. Florence also values the
importance of how other people view him when she says He shouldn t go to the door dressed like that.
Billy is also restricted by his conflicting values with his parents. His mother for example values peace
when she says I m not saying anything. I m keeping out of it. This could also indicate bluntness with
her son and show that she does not listen to what he has to say. This is another barrier that faces Billy.
It is obvious that Billy lacks respect for his mother possibly because of her bluntness with him. Billy
also sees his mother as a person who is easily manipulated. From the stage directions in the script we
know that Alice is always busy which she sees as an attribute, this contrasts with Billy s lazy attitude
because he stays in bed late. Alice has a narrow minded opinion of what Billy should do and states her
opinion. Billy considers her

The motives of the French,Dutch and Spanish empires had a lot of similarities when they where

this the pope require Spain to spread Catholicism around the Americas. The Spanish say that their

Ethnic Inequality
Ethnic inequality
The stereotypes derived from ethnic differences are a crucial source of inequality found in education
outcomes. According to Steele and Aronson (1995, p. 808), the concept of stereotype threat refers to
the condition of individuals at risk of conforming to the negative stereotypes associated with them,
which lead to self characterisation. This analysis of stereotype threat is important because ethnicity
plays a role in reproducing unequal academic performances. For instance, past research has identified
poorer mathematical performance in white men who were confronted with the stereotype of Asian
superiority in maths, compared to those without such confrontation (Aronson et al. 1999, pp. 37 38).
Similarly, a study has proven how the cultural stereotype of black s intellectual inferiority is an
affecting factor to the academic performances of African American college students, as they perform
poorer when stereotype was reinforced (Steele Aronson 1995). These studies contend how ethnicity
plays a part in categorising individuals into separate identities, which have the ability to generate
inequality in educational outcomes. Additionally, the different cultural orientations of certain ethnic
groups may either encourage or discourage an individual s academic achievements (Kao Thompson
2003, p. 419). To illustrate, in the United States (US), Asians represent the 54 per cent of individuals
with bachelor s degree, whereas Hispanics reported the lowest

Essay on Thirty Years War
Thirty Years War Philip, Spanish kings. Philip I (the Handsome), 1478 1506, king of Castile (1506),
was the son of Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I and Mary of Burgundy. He inherited Burgundy
and the Low Countries from his mother and was titular joint ruler of Castile with his wife, Joanna. But
her father ruled these lands as his regent, so he contested (1504) Ferdinand s regency and assumed
(1506) joint rule of Castile with his wife. Philip s early death, however, and his wife s deteriorating
mental condition allowed Ferdinand to resume joint control of Castile. The Low Countries passed to
Philip s son, who later became Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Philip II, 1527 98, king of Spain

But the nation fought in Italy (1615 17) and entered the Thirty Years War. Although the church
prospered and the grandees accumulated vast estates, the Spanish economy declined, partly as a result
of Philip s expulsion (1609 14) of the Moriscos. During Philip s reign, Spanish culture flourished and
gave to the world great artists such as the author Cervantes and the painter El Greco. Philip IV, 1605
65, king of Spain, Naples, and Sicily (1621 65) and, as Philip III, king of Portugal (1621 40),
intelligent but lacking energy, was unable to prevent Spain s political and economic decline. The
Thirty Years War continued until 1648, and the war with France (1621 59) ended with Spain s
humiliation. Portugal revolted (1640), Catalonia was occupied by the French, and Spain had to
recognize the independence of the Netherlands (1648). Philip was a patron of the arts and, thanks to
Velazquez, was perhaps the most frequently portrayed king in history. The accession of Philip V, 1683
1746, the first Bourbon king of Spain (1700 1746), precipitated the War of the Spanish Succession
(1701 14) because his grandfather, Louis XIV of France, had accepted the Spanish throne for Philip.
By the Peace of Utrecht, Spain lost much territory, including the Spanish Netherlands, Naples, and
Sicily. Philip was forced to introduce the Salic law of succession, which forbade female monarchs and
thus precluded the crown s personal union with France. The

Use Your Regular Bank Account for Credit Card Deposits
Very few merchants realize the substantial risk they are taking by having their credit card sales
deposited into their regular bank account.
When you sign up with a credit card processor you give the processor the right to withdraw funds
from your bank account. This allows the processor to reverse sales when the customer files a
complaint. It also allows the processor to take protective action if they suspect fraud. It is a common
practice for processors to withdrawal and hold funds for a substantial period when you terminate your
contract. This ensures there will be sufficient funds if any charge backs occur.
The processor has the right to withdraw funds from your account if fraud is suspected. This can be
done with little or no notice. There are case when substantial amounts were withdrawn due to minor
errors. What if due to a minor error your processor withdrew $30,000 because they feared fraud? If
you were not aware of this, could it cause you to miss a payroll?
Every merchant should be aware of the Cisero s case. Cisero s is a restaurant which was accused of
mishandling data and opening the door for fraud. I do not know the all the facts and I am not sure
where the litigation stands. But this does show that a merchant can wake up one morning and find that
they could be liable for over $1 million. This sort of thing could happen to any merchant. The message

The Abolition Of Slavery And The Civil War
Throughout American history there have been numerous civil rights movements and shifts of thoughts
and beliefs. One of the largest and arguably the most impactful movement was the movement to end
slavery. America has always been divided on the issue, and even to this day there are harsh sentiments
between different ethnicities. America made an official decision on the matter following a brutal and
violent civil war. The Thirteenth Amendment was passed on January 31st, 1865 and read: Neither
slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been
duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. This
amendment followed Abraham Lincoln s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Senate actually passed the amendment in 1864, yet the House of Representatives did not. Through
Abraham Lincoln s efforts with the Republican party, the House eventually decided to pass the
amendment with a vote of 119 to 56 in January, 1865. This established the Thirteenth Amendment as
part of the U.S. Constitution, only needing ratification by three fourths of the states. It was officially
adopted on December 6, 1865 and was a Constitutional amendment. Of the remaining states, all but
three had ratified it by 1870. Delaware ratified it in 1901, while Kentucky and Mississippi did not
ratify it until the second half of the 20th century. Kentucky ratified the Thirteenth Amendment in 1976
and Mississippi did not ratify it until 1995 (History Net, n.d.). The inclusion of the Thirteenth
Amendment in the U.S. Constitution meant that this particular issue was widespread and was also very
controversial. It put an end to one of the bloodiest American conflicts and also established boundaries
that America was to be a free country where everyone is meant to be equal. The abolition of slavery
was necessary to patch a divided country and to free those who had been forced to spend their lives
working for the gain of others, simply because of their skin color. Its inclusion in the

The Latin America Debt Crisis
The Latin America debt crisis
What Happened
Both internal and external for Latin Americas roller coaster economic performance in what was
known as the crisis. During the 50 s and 60 s there was favorable conditions in place to maintain
steady employment creation, capital investment and overall economic expansion. But this period
ended in 1973 amid the first world oil crisis rocked the world economy and caused an era of debt led
growth among the oil importing Latin America countries. Latin American countries were hit by a slow
down in economic growth. The import bill in these nations sky rocketed and exports saw a massive
slump as demand for Latin American products fell abruptly as the world economy slowed down.

The governments limited their costs by slashing social spending; education, health, social services,
etc.., devaluing the national currency via lowering export earnings and increasing import costs,
creating strict limits on food subsidies, cutting workers jobs and wages, taking over small subsistence
farms for large scale export crop farming and promoting the privatization of public industries. Most
countries suffered a recession and often depression; and the poorest of the poor were most affected. As
Latin America s economies stagnated, per capita income plummeted, poverty increased, and the
already wide gap between the rich and the poor widened further. The debt crisis seriously eroded
whatever gains had been made in reducing poverty through improved social welfare measures over the
booms of the 60 s and early 70 s. Poverty grew 50 percent; malnutrition 40 percent; children were
increasingly recruited into the drug trade and prostitution; long term unemployment and its adverse
social effects increased; the weakening of local communities and the growth of crime and an epidemic
of homicides, are but a few of the many dilemmas that the debt crisis caused.

The Pros And Cons Of Poverty In Russia
Who: The current population in Russia is 144.3 million people. Russia has about 23.4 million people
living in poverty. This number is up by 7.9 million from 2013 when the people living in poverty was
15.5 million. It should be noted that one U.S. dollar is equal to about 57.6005 rubles ( Putin, in pre
election year, pledges to erase spiralling poverty , 2017).
What:
The average wage for Russians is 39,253 rubles or $681.47 a month. Unfortunately, around 13.5 %
live on less than 10,000 rubles or $173.61 a month. In the year 2014 many
Russians fell into poverty (Putin, in pre election year, pledges to erase spiralling poverty , 2017). Low

Where: Sadly, the poverty levels are widespread all over Russia. The smaller cities and villages were
hit harder than the bigger cities. An example is the city of Irkutsk. The poverty rate has steadily grown
over the years. As of January 2017, about 21% of the population lives in poverty compared to 13.4%
of the country s population. The smaller cities are hit harder with poverty than major cities because the
major cities generally have factories or other major sources of employment. In the smaller cities, many
citizens make considerably less than the citizens in major cities. For example, a teacher may only
make 16,500 rubles or $286.46 a month in a small city, but if she moves to Moscow she could easily
up to 32,000 rubles or $780 a month.
When:
While poverty has always been an issue in Russia the poverty levels started rising rapidly in 2014. In
2015 the ruble crashed against the dollar and sent inflation up into the double digits (Kottasova, 2017).
The government and banks are hopeful that in 2017 Russia will return to a slow growth. In 2016 the
economy was expected to shrink by 1.2% and again many people are hopeful that Russia will regrow
the economy in 2017 and beyond. Putin has said that the economy will not be fixed overnight and will
depend on harnessing digital technology and making structural changes to how the county is ran.
Why:
It is important to know why Russia s poverty levels matter to geography because while countries near

Comparing O Brien s The Things They Carried and Ninh s The Sorrow of War
Bao Ninh s The Sorrow of War is a contrapuntal reading to American literature on the Vietnam War.
But rather than stand in stark contrast to Tim O Brien s The Things They Carried, The Sorrow of War
is strangely similar, yet different at the same time. From a post colonialist standpoint, one must take in
account both works to get an accurate image of the war. The Sorrow of War is an excellent
counterpoint because it is truthful. Tim O Brien writes: . . . you can tell a true war story by its absolute
and uncompromising allegiance to obscenity and evil. (O Brien, 42) Bao Ninh succeeds in this
respect. And it was for this reason that the Vietnamese ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only were American soldiers well muscled and athletes, (191) but some of them were black.
Whites were not particularly strange, as Vietnam had been under French rule, but blacks must have
been something of a frightening, unfamiliar novelty. This too is reflected in the text. When Kien and
Hoa encounter an American platoon in the jungle, the blacks in the platoon are the first thing Kien
describes, after describing what was not a man, but a tracker dog as big as a calf. (189) And when the
soldiers smoke rosa canina, one of the things they hallucinate is groups of headless black American
soldiers right along with hallucinations about fantastic creatures and extinct animal species. With these
counterpoints to the American views of Vietnamese soldiers, an American certainly gets a different
picture of the war.
Bao Ninh s portrayal of postwar Vietnam also fosters a more objective viewpoint of the war. After the
war, the Americans took their twisted memories back home, to an unscathed country where nearly
everyone had something to go back to. For North Vietnamese soldiers, home was where the horror had
been, and in many ways still was. He is plain in his message: The recent years of war had brought
enough suffering and pain to last them a thousand years. (75) Kien s slow, painful demise is brought
on by the heavy sorrow of war as he is haunted by an eternal past. (88) During the war North
Vietnamese soldiers were but insects or an ant who

The Country And Culture Of Iraq

between those nations. In this essay I will study the Country and Culture of Iraq. I will first start with

In the summer it is not unusual for temperatures to reach 120 degrees. Floods, dust storms, and

discuss the Iraqi people, in order to be fully aware of any culture you must actually learn about the
people themselves. There are five major aspects of Iraqi culture that I will cover;the
language, religion, hierarchy, values, and ethnic groups that make up Iraq. Iraq has an approximate
population of 31,129,225. The capital city of Iraq is Baghdad, which has a population of 5,672,513.
The official language of Iraq is Arabic and Kurdish(The Embassy of the Republic of Iraq). The
majority of Iraq s population is made up of Arabs, approximately 2/3s, another quarter of those living
here consider themselves to be Kurds, with the remainder of the people belonging to smaller minority
groups (Woods Chambers, 2016, p. 8). If you asked people in the U.S to tell you one way they identify
themselves many may say, I am American, but Iraqi culture is very different. They identify with their
families and their tribes. Though most Arabs in Iraq would consider themselves to be apart of one of

Public Sector Reformation through Education
I. Summary of Article The best but the hardest path to reforming the public sector is through education
(The Economist Magazine 2011). America has a lot to learn from the results and implications of the
2000 survey and list of countries with the most improved education systems by the Programme for
International Student Assessment or PISA. The performance of academic students at age 15 in
reading, math and science was surveyed in 32 countries. According to the 2009 results, the top 5
performers in reading were Shanghai, China; South Korea; Finland; Hong Kong, China; and
Singapore. In reading, the top ranking were Shanghai, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, and
Finland as the 6th. And in science, the leaders were Shanghai, Finland, Hong Kong, Singapore, and
Japan. The US was among the lowest ranking in science as the 23rd in ranking (The Economist
Magazine). Meanwhile, other organizations measured how far countries had improved their
educational systems (The Economist Magazine 2011). One of them was McKinsey Consultancy,
which came out with its own finding on specific number of years it assessed the countries. The
countries in the order and the period of assessment were Singapore, Hong Kong and South Korea, 5

Nonverbal Communication And Relationships With Family Members
Relationships are no walk in the park. If you want relationships to work everyone involved needs to
put in the work to communicate and work at keeping the relationship going. In my essay about
relationship stages I will discuss nonverbal communication in relationships, romantic relationships
and, relationships with family members. Nonverbal communication is a way to communicate without
speaking and communicating verbally. According to McCornack, we define nonverbal communication
as the intentional or unintentional transmission of meaning through an individuals non spoken
physical and behavioral cues (211). In relationships, an outsider can observe two people and tell what
kind of relationship they share without hearing the way they speak to each other. Nonverbal
communication is just as important as verbal communication. Nonverbal communication crucially
serves to create intimacy between two people (McCornack, 234). According to McCornack intimacy is
the feeling of closeness and union that exists between us and our partners (234). I feel that young
people, including myself, think that being intimate goes with having sex. I was corrected by a teacher
in high school who shared with me that being intimate with someone is not having sex. Since then I
have felt like I have had intimate relationships with not only my boyfriend but my best friend of 9
years. I share a bond with my best friend that is not like any other friendship I have. We self disclose,

The Catholic Church and Charity
The Catholic Church has been around since 100 AD. While it has been a place of worship for over 1.1
billion people all over the world, the Catholic Church is not just a source of faith for those same
people. The Catholic Church is one of the world s largest sources of charity. The Catholic Church
serves billions of people all over the world every year with a large range of services. The Catholic
religion is dominated by the theological philosophy that one must be a good person, but also give back
during the course of their lifetime. With charity being one of the core values of the Catholic religion, it
is no question that the Catholic Church is quite probably the largest charity in the world. The Catholic
Church provides for the poor by giving them a place to eat and stay, they allocate funds for many
types of organizations involving helping the downtrodden and people who cannot help themselves,
and most importantly, the Catholic Church has a large network of people who go on missions to
different countries to help spread the religion of Catholicism, but also help the people there build
homes, water treatment facilities, and help them with an assortment of other health related tasks such
as AIDs prevention and malaria prevention. The Catholic Church s main priority in regards to their
charitable contributions to the world is the fight against poverty. Catholics have been trying to help the

Open and Closed Source Systems Essay
An operating system is a considered a set of programs that schedule tasks, assign storage and
presenting an interface to the user. There are many operating systems to choose from. Some are
created for personal use, some for business use, and some can be used for both. One of the biggest
differences is whether the operating system is open source or closed source. Operating systems are
created with programming code. Programmers are responsible for writing the source code, which is
compiled into executable code. This executable code is what creates the product ran on computers. An
open source system is a system in which the source code is visible. A closed source system keeps the
source code hidden.

Unix Windows 97, XP, 7, Vista
Versions of Window Server
Mac OS X
Closed source systems are usually found in personal computers because the level of expertise needed
to use them is minimal. There are many factors to consider when determining which system to use.
The level of expertise of the user, the costs of the system and any add ons, and the flexibility of the
system must all be considered. The type of application also plays some role in the decision. Both types
can be found in personal, server, and mobile applications. However, open source systems are often
found more in mobile and server applications.

Analysis Of The Tumultuous Election Of 1800 Essay

Adams vs. Jefferson
The Tumultuous Election of 1800
Analytical Book Review
Adams vs Jefferson, The Tumultuous Election of 1800, describes the events of the infamous United
States Presidential Election of 1800, the election that forever changed the landscape of American
politics and reestablished the principles of the American Revolution. The election of 1800 was a battle
of two political powerhouses: John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. They were two of America s
founding fathers who were once great friends, but were thrown against each other as adversaries with
the future of America in their hands.
John Ferling, the author, began by describing the events that occurred just prior to the election, and
painted the picture of John Adams travelling to Washington D.C. from his Massachusetts farm and
Thomas Jefferson from his hilltop lair of Monticello in Virginia symbolizing the differences among
Adam s northeastern simple farming roots and Jefferson s extravagant southern slave owning
background. From the start, the author explains (without tipping his hat to the debacle the system
would cause in the 1800 election) how in the 1796 and 1800 elections, the Constitution required the
practice of each political party nominating two presidential candidates, with the candidates with the
most votes becoming President and the second most becoming Vice President. The Federalists
nominated Adams and Charles Pinckney from South Carolina;

Michel Foucault uses the term docility to explain how control and power is achieved through
discipline. The classical age discovered the body as an object and target of power. Generally docile
means ready to accept control or instruction (submissive) He tells us a body is docile when it is
subjected and trained with a lot of practise. He gives various methods about the control of the body
and brings out disciplines by the relation of docility utility, (Foucault, 137). He tells us many gestures
that are analogous to dancers. He also elaborates the idea of the soldier s body by giving their

  • 2. Bottoms V. Bottom Case Summary There is no lack of discrimination in the world today. In 1993, the situation was even worse. LGBT discrimination was one of the worst. The Supreme Court case Bottoms v. Bottoms is an excellent example of that. This case features a child custody dispute between a lesbian mother and a homophobic grandmother on the basis of the mother s sexuality. Why is the fitness of a mother not being determined by her actions but by her sexuality? This case changed the views of how homosexual mothers and fathers should be judged as parents and their capabilities. As a result of this case, a mother ended up childless and an entire community was hurt by this judges ruling. 1993 had very different societal views than 2017. Laws protecting LGBT people were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During this time, the court took many testimonies from many people, including Tyler s father, Dennis Doustou. He stated that Kay was totally wrong to take Tyler from his mother. (Anderson Minshall n.p.) Psychologists looked into Sharon and April s household to determine their fitness as caretakers and how them being in a homosexual relationship would physically and emotionally affect Tyler. It was found that a person s sexual orientation does not bear a relation to that person s fitness as a parent. (McHugh et al. n.p.) It is also stated that many children do not encounter harassment for having homosexual parents. If any harassment occur, it tends to be harmless verbal teasing. (McHugh et al. n.p.) It is said that courts considering what is the best interests of the child with a lesbian or gay parent have viewed the homosexual as a mentally ill person or as a child molester, (Ronner 343) when in actuality being raised by a homosexual couple does not have any emotional differences then if the child were raised in a heterosexual household. ( Bottoms v. Bottoms n.p.) Despite this fact Sharon was granted custody of Tyler, but lost it to Kay once again when the Supreme Court of Virginia took the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Salmonell A Common Bacteria The importance of doing this investigation was necessary as this microorganism, Salmonella is a common bacteria encountered in daily life. Salmonella is a bacterium that is found in a wide variety of animals and mammals (Weese and Fulford, 2011). Gram negative bacteria exhibit appendages on outer surfaces known as pili (Lo et al., 2014). The pili is also named fimbriae, these are chains of protein that form filaments that extend from the outer surface of bacterial cells enabling them to adhere to any host target cell (Proft and Baker, 2009; Kang and Baker, 2012). This makes the pili of clinical importance when assessing clinical manifestation; particularly in pathogenic organisms, when developing drugs such as vaccines (Kang and Baker, 2012). Currently, the use of pili in vaccine development is widespread in research (Wizeman et al, 1999). This suggests that the pilus is the basic structural subunit in all bacterial cells. Studying Salmonella is vital in understanding how SafD operates and possible clinical problems posed to individuals, due to the different strains of the bacterium that have been previously discovered. Although Salmonella has been identified and classified into different classifications, it has undergone multiple changes and the main nomenclature system is yet to be established (Chiu, Lin Hui, 2014). The genus which Salmonella belongs to is known as the Enterobacteriaceae family (Chu and Su, 2004; Farmer, 1995). Salmonella is a gram negative rod shaped ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Essay about Narrative of Life of Frederick Douglass Published in 1845, Narrative of life of Frederick Douglass an American slave written by himself is still the most highly acclaimed American autobiography ever written. It was published seven years after Douglass escaped from his life as a slave in Maryland. It describes his experience of being slave and his psychological insights into the slave master relationship. The main focus is on How he learn to read and write and the pain of slavery. The goal of this paper is to bring more insight analysis of his narrative life through the most famous two chapter s in which he defines, How he learn to read and write and The pain of slavery. To achieve this goal, the paper is organized into four main sections. First, author background and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Analysis Douglass s Narrative displays how white slaveholders continue slavery by keeping their slaves uninformed. At the time Douglass was writing, many people thought that slavery was a normal state of being. They believed that blacks were naturally incapable of participating in civil society and thus should be kept as labors for whites. The Narrative explains the tactics and measures by which whites gain and keep power over blacks from their birth onward. Slave owners keep slaves uninformed of basic facts about themselves, such as their birth date or their parents. This enforced ignorance deprives children of their natural sense of distinct identity. As slave children grow up, slave owners prevent them from learning to read and write, as learning would give them a sense of self sufficiency and capability. Slave masters understand that knowledge would lead slaves to question the right of whites to keep slaves. Lastly, by keeping slaves illiterate, Southern slave masters maintain control over what the rest of America knows about slavery. If slaves cannot write, their picture of the slavery story cannot be told. Wendell Phillips states this point in his prefatory letter to the Narrative. Just as slave masters keep people as slaves by depriving them of knowledge and education, slaves need to seek knowledge and education in order to track freedom. It is from Hugh Auld that Douglass learns this idea that knowledge should be the way to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One can only assume that Chipotle uses concentration strategies for their corporate level strategies, because they only concentrate on the restaurant industry. Market penetration and market development is their main focus, as they are attracting new customers as they increase brand awareness through their business strategies and their Food With Integrity campaign, Farmed and Dangerous live action story telling comedy series, and Cultivate Foundation, which is a non profit organization supporting sustainable agriculture, family farming and food education, and they are expanding into new markets with international expansion, so Chipotle can continue to change the way people think about and eat fast food (Chipotle, 2015). Chipotle also, uses product development , but not as aggressively as market penetration. The most recent product development is a meat alternative made from tofu, called Sofritas . Chipotle is highly invested in Pizzeria Locale, suggesting the possibility of horizontal integration in the near future, and is using an adjacent strategy with its sister restaurant ShopHouse Southeast Asian ... • 6. Vincent Van Gogh s The Starry Night A very popular work of art by Vincent Van Gogh would be The Starry Night. Vincent Van Gogh depicted a night in the town as a symbolic image of emotion with the exploding stars, a night where one can dream, and the comfort of others as homes are brightly lit. Through this painting, Vincent van Gogh expresses personal insight and feelings through it. Van Gogh had a mental illness and it said that between seizures, he would do these paintings because it allowed him to have great clarity. Van Gogh painted The Starry Night by memory and his work symbolize his great illness and a moment of sanity since he was at Saint Remy during the time he painted this portraying what he saw from the window of his bedroom. During the time this painting was made, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The different shapes throughout the painting like the stars and the houses as well as the colors expressed in the sky and in the dark hillsides and the texture of the rich and thick strokes in the painting create these Art Principles. Unity is shown in the painting as all the elements belong together and fit with one another to create a harmonious whole. The bright yellow blue night sky is filled with stars and movement around it which guides the viewer s eyes in the same movement as the lines go not only in the sky but in the hills. The hills are moving upward and then downwards onto the brightly lit buildings repeating harmoniously in the painting. The variety of the orange color is seen in the stars and moon and in some of the houses represented as a light. Patterns are seen in the skylines and stars as they move across. Asymmetrical balance is seen in the work of art because even with the patterns, the right and left sides are not the same because of the different and variety of elements that balance together based on their meaning. The school policy should entail strategies to implement the reach and teach method to minimize some of the on going distractions in the school environment. School discipline continues to rise in many counties due to the lack of self discipline. In order for us to be able to reach and teach students, we as adults must be able to communicate with each other without looking at the titles. • 8. Human Cloud Essay Over the last decade, the human cloud has become a staple of doing business. Companies from main street to wall street can quickly find extremely talented subcontractors online, from anywhere in the world, at a very reasonable price. For this reason, it has become increasingly difficult to trade competitively without crowdsourcing, or accessing the human cloud. The human cloud, a term used to describe the online, talentsourcing ecosystem that has emerged over the last decade or so, revolves around online middlemen, such as Upwork , that engage a virtual pool of workers from around the world that can be tapped, on demand, to provide a broad range of services to any interested buyer (Kaganer, 2012). Perhaps the most notable downside to international trade would be the sophistication of communication required to manage cloud workers. Virtual organizations can speed up cycle time, but they pose new challenges for managers on how to manage remote workers. Communications technologies and the Web let employees work from anywhere around the corner or around the world and require special attention to managing communication (Carpenter, 2009, p. 62). For the uninitiated, differences in culture, language and cross time zone coordination make the managerial task formidable indeed. Given this challenge, we wonder if there exists a set of principles for successfully leveraging the human cloud? Here are three principles that managers of a distributed workforce can rely on to successfully leverage the human cloud. Principle #1: Inspire Most workers want to be a part of an enterprise that matters. • 9. Juxtaposition In A Modern Proposal Swift when faced with a humanitarian crisis, a tyrannical English Empire, and a strong divide between social classes, uses his pent up agitation to develop a piece of satire which both compels and shocks those who read his work. A Modern Proposal is centered around the idea of cannibalism. In Swift s reformation of Irish society a new division of laborers would be created labeled breeders . These breeders would raise infants to the ripe age of one, and then sell them to the wealthy to be slaughtered, served and possibly made into apparel. Throughout his proposal Swift uses comic juxtaposition and grotesque elements to further convey his criticism of Ireland. By comparing the lower class breeders and their children to animals, Swift uses comic juxtaposition to hone in on the notion that the impoverished people in society have long been denied the humanity the wealthy pride themselves on. No longer being seen as meaningful, important human beings, the poor are left begging for the respect that comes with money. Pregnant woman seen as being mere vessels for produce in his imaginary world, are compared to cows saying Men would become as fond of their wives during the time of their pregnancy as they are now of their mares in foal, their cows in calf, their sows when they are ready to Farrow (5). The views of Socrates expressed and written by his pupil Plato are vastly philosophical in nature and he promotes the idea of questioning life to achieve insight. The philosophers who possess the absolute truth are the best equipped to rule society according to Plato and his Allegory of the Cave. Plato attacks democracy and describes the disbursement of political freedom to the masses as an intoxication of wine, claiming that a democratic city gets drunk on too much unmixed freedom (The Republic, 220). Plato details the filtration of this drunkenness from society disobeying rulers trickling down to the son disrespecting the father and eventually equal rights in relations between the sexes (The Republic, 221). Plato and Aristotle share this skepticism of democracy. The limitation of freedom, liberty, and equality not only with regards to mistrust of democracy but also in terms of denial of citizenship and justification of slavery are commonalities in the teachings of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Plato accepts slavery throughout The Republic, because he often deems whole groups of people unworthy of freedom. Aristotle s justifies slavery through the characteristic of rationality; he claims that there is a condition of natural slavery where when one being is rational and the other is not, there is a natural master slave relationship (Politics, 2). • 19. Ethnic Inequality Ethnic inequality The stereotypes derived from ethnic differences are a crucial source of inequality found in education outcomes. According to Steele and Aronson (1995, p. 808), the concept of stereotype threat refers to the condition of individuals at risk of conforming to the negative stereotypes associated with them, which lead to self characterisation. This analysis of stereotype threat is important because ethnicity plays a role in reproducing unequal academic performances. For instance, past research has identified poorer mathematical performance in white men who were confronted with the stereotype of Asian superiority in maths, compared to those without such confrontation (Aronson et al. 1999, pp. 37 38). Similarly, a study has proven how the cultural stereotype of black s intellectual inferiority is an affecting factor to the academic performances of African American college students, as they perform poorer when stereotype was reinforced (Steele Aronson 1995). These studies contend how ethnicity plays a part in categorising individuals into separate identities, which have the ability to generate inequality in educational outcomes. Additionally, the different cultural orientations of certain ethnic groups may either encourage or discourage an individual s academic achievements (Kao Thompson 2003, p. 419). • 25. The Pros And Cons Of Poverty In Russia Who: The current population in Russia is 144.3 million people. Russia has about 23.4 million people living in poverty. This number is up by 7.9 million from 2013 when the people living in poverty was 15.5 million. It should be noted that one U.S. dollar is equal to about 57.6005 rubles ( Putin, in pre election year, pledges to erase spiralling poverty , 2017). What: The average wage for Russians is 39,253 rubles or $681.47 a month. Unfortunately, around 13.5 % live on less than 10,000 rubles or $173.61 a month. In the year 2014 many Russians fell into poverty (Putin, in pre election year, pledges to erase spiralling poverty , 2017). Low world oil prices and Western sanctions imposed over the conflict in Ukraine have hit Russia hard since ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Where: Sadly, the poverty levels are widespread all over Russia. The smaller cities and villages were hit harder than the bigger cities. An example is the city of Irkutsk. The poverty rate has steadily grown over the years. As of January 2017, about 21% of the population lives in poverty compared to 13.4% of the country s population. The smaller cities are hit harder with poverty than major cities because the major cities generally have factories or other major sources of employment. In the smaller cities, many citizens make considerably less than the citizens in major cities. For example, a teacher may only make 16,500 rubles or $286.46 a month in a small city, but if she moves to Moscow she could easily up to 32,000 rubles or $780 a month. When: While poverty has always been an issue in Russia the poverty levels started rising rapidly in 2014. In 2015 the ruble crashed against the dollar and sent inflation up into the double digits (Kottasova, 2017). The government and banks are hopeful that in 2017 Russia will return to a slow growth. In 2016 the economy was expected to shrink by 1.2% and again many people are hopeful that Russia will regrow the economy in 2017 and beyond. Putin has said that the economy will not be fixed overnight and will depend on harnessing digital technology and making structural changes to how the county is ran. Why: It is important to know why Russia s poverty levels matter to geography because while countries near Russia could be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 26. Comparing O Brien s The Things They Carried and Ninh s... Comparing O Brien s The Things They Carried and Ninh s The Sorrow of War Bao Ninh s The Sorrow of War is a contrapuntal reading to American literature on the Vietnam War. But rather than stand in stark contrast to Tim O Brien s The Things They Carried, The Sorrow of War is strangely similar, yet different at the same time. From a post colonialist standpoint, one must take in account both works to get an accurate image of the war. The Sorrow of War is an excellent counterpoint because it is truthful. Tim O Brien writes: . . . you can tell a true war story by its absolute and uncompromising allegiance to obscenity and evil. (O Brien, 42) Bao Ninh succeeds in this respect. And it was for this reason that the Vietnamese ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not only were American soldiers well muscled and athletes, (191) but some of them were black. Whites were not particularly strange, as Vietnam had been under French rule, but blacks must have been something of a frightening, unfamiliar novelty. This too is reflected in the text. When Kien and Hoa encounter an American platoon in the jungle, the blacks in the platoon are the first thing Kien describes, after describing what was not a man, but a tracker dog as big as a calf. (189) And when the soldiers smoke rosa canina, one of the things they hallucinate is groups of headless black American soldiers right along with hallucinations about fantastic creatures and extinct animal species. With these counterpoints to the American views of Vietnamese soldiers, an American certainly gets a different picture of the war. Bao Ninh s portrayal of postwar Vietnam also fosters a more objective viewpoint of the war. After the war, the Americans took their twisted memories back home, to an unscathed country where nearly everyone had something to go back to. For North Vietnamese soldiers, home was where the horror had been, and in many ways still was. He is plain in his message: The recent years of war had brought enough suffering and pain to last them a thousand years. (75) Kien s slow, painful demise is brought on by the heavy sorrow of war as he is haunted by an eternal past. (88) During the war North Vietnamese soldiers were but insects or an ant who ... This ability can grant a person great insight to the lives and actions of unfamiliar cultures. A person who can be culturally aware could change every aspect of how we interact with foreign nations and could prove vital if and when conflicts arise between those nations. In this essay I will study the Country and Culture of Iraq. I will first start with the physical imports of the area: the geographical location, terrain and climate. In the summer it is not unusual for temperatures to reach 120 degrees. Floods, dust storms, and sandstorms are a natural part of Iraq s weather system (Iraqi Cultural Office, 2016). Next, I will discuss the Iraqi people, in order to be fully aware of any culture you must actually learn about the people themselves. There are five major aspects of Iraqi culture that I will cover;the language, religion, hierarchy, values, and ethnic groups that make up Iraq. Iraq has an approximate population of 31,129,225. The capital city of Iraq is Baghdad, which has a population of 5,672,513. The official language of Iraq is Arabic and Kurdish(The Embassy of the Republic of Iraq). The majority of Iraq s population is made up of Arabs, approximately 2/3s, another quarter of those living here consider themselves to be Kurds, with the remainder of the people belonging to smaller minority groups (Woods Chambers, 2016, p. 8). If you asked people in the U.S to tell you one way they identify themselves many may say, I am American, but Iraqi culture is very different. They identify with their families and their tribes. Though most Arabs in Iraq would consider themselves to be apart of one of the two major groups, the Sunnis or the Shi ites, they have their own family units or tribes they belong to as well. • 29. Public Sector Reformation through Education I. Summary of Article The best but the hardest path to reforming the public sector is through education (The Economist Magazine 2011). America has a lot to learn from the results and implications of the 2000 survey and list of countries with the most improved education systems by the Programme for International Student Assessment or PISA. The performance of academic students at age 15 in reading, math and science was surveyed in 32 countries. According to the 2009 results, the top 5 performers in reading were Shanghai, China; South Korea; Finland; Hong Kong, China; and Singapore. In reading, the top ranking were Shanghai, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Finland as the 6th. And in science, the leaders were Shanghai, Finland, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan. The US was among the lowest ranking in science as the 23rd in ranking (The Economist Magazine). Meanwhile, other organizations measured how far countries had improved their educational systems (The Economist Magazine 2011). One of them was McKinsey Consultancy, which came out with its own finding on specific number of years it assessed the countries. The countries in the order and the period of assessment were Singapore, Hong Kong and South Korea, 5 years assessment; Ontario, Canada and Saxony, Germany, each at 7 years; England, Latvia, Lithuania, and Slovenia, each at 13 years; and Poland, 7 years (The Economist Magazine). • 30. Nonverbal Communication And Relationships With Family Members Relationships are no walk in the park. If you want relationships to work everyone involved needs to put in the work to communicate and work at keeping the relationship going. In my essay about relationship stages I will discuss nonverbal communication in relationships, romantic relationships and, relationships with family members. Nonverbal communication is a way to communicate without speaking and communicating verbally. According to McCornack, we define nonverbal communication as the intentional or unintentional transmission of meaning through an individuals non spoken physical and behavioral cues (211). In relationships, an outsider can observe two people and tell what kind of relationship they share without hearing the way they speak to each other. Nonverbal communication is just as important as verbal communication. Nonverbal communication crucially serves to create intimacy between two people (McCornack, 234). According to McCornack intimacy is the feeling of closeness and union that exists between us and our partners (234). I feel that young people, including myself, think that being intimate goes with having sex. I was corrected by a teacher in high school who shared with me that being intimate with someone is not having sex. Since then I have felt like I have had intimate relationships with not only my boyfriend but my best friend of 9 years. I share a bond with my best friend that is not like any other friendship I have. We self disclose, and we have a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are many operating systems to choose from. Some are created for personal use, some for business use, and some can be used for both. One of the biggest differences is whether the operating system is open source or closed source. Operating systems are created with programming code. Programmers are responsible for writing the source code, which is compiled into executable code. This executable code is what creates the product ran on computers. An open source system is a system in which the source code is visible. A closed source system keeps the source code hidden. System Differences There are more ... Like open source systems, closed source systems offer software for a variety of uses that include personal, server and mobile. Open Source Closed Source Linux Red Hat Unix Windows 97, XP, 7, Vista Versions of Window Server Mac OS X Closed source systems are usually found in personal computers because the level of expertise needed to use them is minimal. There are many factors to consider when determining which system to use. The level of expertise of the user, the costs of the system and any add ons, and the flexibility of the system must all be considered. The type of application also plays some role in the decision. Both types can be found in personal, server, and mobile applications. However, open source systems are often found more in mobile and server applications. Krill are very significant to the Antarctic food web and this decline could threaten whales, seals and penguins all of which rely on krill. The decline of krill has been associated to a intense decline in sea ice, their habita. Sea ice is a vigorous feeding ground for the enormous number of krill in the Southern Ocean. The research shows that krill decreased by about 80% since the 1970s. Krill feed on the algae which are found under the surface of the sea ice. • 37. Analysis Of The Tumultuous Election Of 1800 Essay Jack Norman Mr. Nicholls Period 7 November 4, 2016 Adams vs. Jefferson The Tumultuous Election of 1800 Analytical Book Review Adams vs Jefferson, The Tumultuous Election of 1800, describes the events of the infamous United States Presidential Election of 1800, the election that forever changed the landscape of American politics and reestablished the principles of the American Revolution. The election of 1800 was a battle of two political powerhouses: John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. They were two of America s founding fathers who were once great friends, but were thrown against each other as adversaries with the future of America in their hands. John Ferling, the author, began by describing the events that occurred just prior to the election, and painted the picture of John Adams travelling to Washington D.C. from his Massachusetts farm and Thomas Jefferson from his hilltop lair of Monticello in Virginia symbolizing the differences among Adam s northeastern simple farming roots and Jefferson s extravagant southern slave owning background. From the start, the author explains (without tipping his hat to the debacle the system would cause in the 1800 election) how in the 1796 and 1800 elections, the Constitution required the practice of each political party nominating two presidential candidates, with the candidates with the most votes becoming President and the second most becoming Vice President. The Federalists nominated Adams and Charles Pinckney from South Carolina; ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
