Jacqueline Freney
Young person of the year
At an age of only 20 years, Jacqueline Freney from New South Wales, Australia won 8 gold medals at
the London 2012 Paralympic Games. In 2014 she won the Young Australian of the Year award, and
that s well deserved.

Jacqueline Freney was born with cerebral palsy. She was born into a swim ming family, and despite
her illness she set herself the goal to become a com petitive swimmer.
As therapy for her cere bral palsy her parents, who have been managing Public Olympic Pools for the
past 25 years, took her for swims every day. In the beginning she would paddle around in the leaner s
pool, and the water supported her so she could walk unaided. That freedom gave her the love for
water. In fact, her being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She had trouble keeping up with the other swimmers, but with her determination she made her way
from the bottom to being the best swimmer in the squad. The determination has made her the great
athlete she is to day.
Jacqueline Freney is the third generation of competi tive swimmers in her family. Her grandfather
Peter Freney coached her father Michael Freney, who now coaches Jacqueline.
Growing up, Jacqueline had two big role models: The Olympic Champion Kieran Perkins, who
trained in Jacqueline s parents pool, and Paralympic Champion Siobhan Paton, whom Jac queline s
grandfather coached to glory at the 2000 Sydney Paralympic Games, where she won six gold medals.
Jacqueline became Aus tralia s most successful Paralympian swimmer at a single Paralympic Games,
when she at the 2012 Lon don Paralympic Games won an amazing 8 gold medals. She won a gold
medal for every event she competed in, and two of her perform ances were under world record time.
Her gold medal haul was greater than any other competitor from any country.
Today, she is almost 24 years old, and she continues to swim. But outside of the pool, she works as a

Why Millionaires Do Not Pay Federal Taxes
Additionally, with the rich paying so little in taxes, most don t even pay their taxes! About 46 percent
of all tax filers (individuals or households) pay no federal income taxes each year because of various
exclusions. More than half of the tax revenue lost to the most common tax exclusions stays in the
pockets of the richest one fifth of Americans, according to an analysis by the Congressional Budget
Office. By contrast, high earners who paid no tax were primarily able to do so because of a wide array
of other special provisions in tax law. Roughly 1,000 of the 4,000 millionaire non payers in 2011 did
so because their income that year was locked away in individual retirement accounts not subject to
federal taxes, according to Roberton Williams of the Urban Institute, one of the authors of the Tax
Policy Center analysis. ( Why Thousands of Millionaires Don t Pay Federal Income Taxes. by

This is something that the rich Donald Trump can receive from the government for example. That
option is rarely available to poor families. Instead, they pay taxes on their income when they receive
it, whether or not they are just coming off a difficult year. While the rich don t even stress and reject
nor receive taxes. Not only is there benefits for the rich when it comes to taxes, there are benefits for
the environment when they pay more taxes too. It redistributes income and wealth in ways that help
all of us. Currently, a few people receive most of the income and own most of everything. A very high
top tax rate reduces this concentration of wealth. ( Taxing the Rich Will Improve the US Economy. by

How Is Atticus Finch Courageous
Courage is an interesting word. Courage can be a feeling or an act. In the novel To Kill a
Mockibngbird the characters Mrs Dubose, Tom Robinson and Atticus Finch all demonstrate what true
courage really is. The first character I will discuss is Mrs Dubose. Mrs Dubose is a very old woman
battling an illness and a morphine addiction. Secondly, I will discuss Tom Robinson. Tom is a black
man who is (falsely) accused of rape by Mayella Ewell. Finally I will explain why Atticus Finch is
courageous. Atticus is the father of the novel s narrator Scout or Jean Louise Finch. All three
characters demonstrate great bravery throughout the novel, each have their hardships and each try to
push through the adversity to their best ability.
To begin, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a reader, I found Atticus to be the most courageous character in the novel. The reasons behind this
statement are that Atticus defends a black man in court, he stands up to the lynch mob in front of the
jailhouse and because he can fight without words. First, Atticus is very valorous for taking the Tom
Robinson case. For a white man to be acquainted with a black man who was not his slave was rather
sporadic. Even after all of the physical and verbal abuse Atticus took he kept his word and defended
Tom for all he was worth. I can t stay here all day and this summer is going to be a hot one. (Atticus,
Page 128) As a reader, this was the greatest act of courage executed in the novel. For Atticus to risk
his respect, family and life to protect a black man took great bravery and sacrifice. Secondly, Atticus
protected Tom from he lynch mob at the jailhouse. As the men poured out of the car towards Atticus,
he was undaunted buy the moving shadows approaching him. In ones and twos, men got out of the
cars. Shadows became substance as lights revealed solid shapes moving toward the jail door. Atticus
remained where he was. (Scout, Page 152 153) Atticus fearlessly confronted the mass of angry men
and reasoned with them until there is an interruption courtesy of Scout. This event proves that Atticus
is very brave because he came up against a whole mob and did not back down. Finally, Atticus is

Northanger Abbey
The book Northanger Abbey focuses on young people or teenagers in the 19th Century Britain. The
focus of the book is mainly directed towards the way young people fit in a society that was based on
rigid hierarchical system that put people into different classes according to wealth, education,
reputation and cultural background. Each of the societal rankings has a given set of behavioural
patterns that are expected from them by the society as a whole and these expectations are a source of
frustration, obstacles, misunderstanding and separation for the young people as they try to fit in. This
paper is a presentation of the effects that these social rules of the high class had on the central
characters of the novel.
The main character is Catherine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Making friends and trying to figure out true friends from false ones is a major part of the plot and it
affects all the concerned characters. This issue of friendship is seen when Isabelle is not particularly
concerned or ashamed that James is Catherine, her friend s brother. We see that she is used to not
having and does not attach much importance to permanent relationships and this can be traced back to
her being raised in that big city environment that is not conducive to long lasting relationships.
Catherine on the other hand loves and cherishes good friendships and, unlike Isabelle, she grew up in
that small community environment that fosters such true and long lasting friendships. Closely related
to the issue of friendship in the plot is the issue of families. Different types of families are discussed in
the book and put in contrast. These include rich families and poor families, families with many kids
versus those with few, families with both parents as opposed to those without, and lastly families
living in the rural areas versus those living in the cities. This is clearly demonstrated when Isabelle s
brother, John, tries to convince the General to deny giving consent to the marriage between Henry and
Catherine only because Catherine s family, the Morlands, was poor. Isabelle s family, the Thorpes, are
wealthy. This could actually be the reason why

Developing The Stormwater Master Plan
Following is a description of the important data and their potential uses in developing the Stormwater
Master Plan:
a) The accuracy and resolution of topographic data that determines the drainage area boundaries,
slopes and flow paths have a significant impact on the quality of hydrologic and hydraulic modeling
and flood mapping. The FMC team expects that the high quality topographic data of Freetown,
including the upstream mountainous areas, will be provided by SLRA within a week of the project
inception. A basemap showing ortho rectified aerial imagery will significantly help in ground truthing
and resolving discrepancies in data. Additionally topographic survey will be required to determine the
centerline of existing and proposed storm drain alignment and establish vertical and horizontal
geometric characteristic of the urban storm water drainages and structures, centerlines and cross
sections.
b) Geographic coordinates of significant features on or adjacent to the urban storm water drainages
and structures, including buildings, markets and roads will be required. It is assumed that such GIS
data are readily available to support the development of the Master Plan.
c) Assuming the long term rainfall data are readily available from the Meteorological Office, all
rainfall records from local rain gauges will be compiled. The rainfall data should have a time interval
of one hour or less. The rainfall records will be used as input to the model and to determine the peak
flows

The Important Aspects Of Effective Nursing
Communication is one of the most important aspects in effective nursing. For a nurse to be successful,
communicating with patients, families, physicians, peers and ancillary departments is necessary.
Communication is not only verbal with language, words and sound, but also non verbal. Non verbal
behaviors such as touch, facial expressions, eye contact and movement, posture and silence make up
more than half of the art of communication (Giger, 2013). The population in the United States is
comprised of various cultures with different views of the meaning of non verbal communication.
Understanding the views of various cultures can create a positive and healing environment for the
patient, as well as increase patient and employee satisfaction (Starr Wallace, 2011).
Many patients feel comforted by touch; a hand on the shoulder can help to alleviate fear in the hospital
setting. Many cultures from Latin America, Spain and France are extremely affectionate and
communicate through touch (Giger, 2013). These cultures often share kisses on the cheek, hugs and
handshakes when greeting one another. As a nurse, I have experienced the embrace of a family from
Mexico showing appreciation for taking care of their loved one. It is important to understand that
other patients with different cultural backgrounds such as those from Germany and England, might
find this type of physical contact invasive and inappropriate (Giger, 2013). Therefore, it is important
for the nurse to understand the

Compare And Contrast Hyde And Frankenstein
Dantès is also shown to be similar to Frankenstein and Jekyll, in that the three are unable to escape
from their creations. Dantès and Jekyll are trapped more so than Frankenstein, as they are the same
person as their creations, whereas Frankenstein is trapped by being unable to bring himself to create a
female creature due to the effect it may have on society. Frankenstein s identity is called into question
here, as he becomes almost defined, in the Creature s eyes, as being unable to keep his word. The
Creature s words show a parallel between himself and Hyde and Frankenstein and Jekyll: You are my
creator, but I am your master obey!
The verb obey causes the creator s identities to be reduced to that of slaves: Frankenstein is forced ...

When Dantès is imprisoned, he loses his name, Hyde is known solely by his appearance, and the
Creature is never given a name. This contrasts with the socially accepted Monte Cristo, Henry Jekyll
and Victor Frankenstein. Their names allow them to be accepted by, not forgotten about, shunned, or
left incapable of joining, society. Unlike Hyde and Dantès, the Creature is never named. He is
constantly referred to as a creature and a miserable fiend. This mainly comes through Frankenstein s
point of view, which suggests that the Creature s monstrousness stems from Frankenstein s
perceptions of him and the way he is originally presented to the reader. Had the novel been written
from his point of view, it can be suggested that the Creature would not be viewed as such a monster by
society, and readers would have more sympathy for him. The absence causes him to be dehumanised
in a similar way to Dantès, who is renamed Number 34. Hyde, however, is named, allowing Jekyll s
view of his alter ego being natural and human to be more accepted by society. Hyde s naturalness can
said to be due to his evilness as he represents the original sin found inside all of us. Dantès and the
Creature are shunned by society when they are without a name because they are distanced from
society. Whilst Dantès distance is literal as he has been taken away from Marseille, the Creature s
distance remains figurative he follows Frankenstein and is in fact very close to society. His distance
stems from his hideousness and the absence of a name to introduce himself by. He is left to forge his
own identity which comes as an incredibly hard task. Modern readers have felt sympathy for the
Creature in his struggle to be accepted: Shelley s use of his point of view in the novel aids this,
however at the time of writing, readers generally viewed the Creature as a

Of Abraham Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln And The President Of...
War is chaos and the devil itself. It represents the cruelty and darkness in the human heart. In 1861, a
Civil War broke out between the North and the South. A soldier who served in the Civil War said in a
letter to his parents, Many became ill from exposure and starvation, and were left on the road. ( Letters
and Diaries, 1862) The war continued for four years and was considered by historians as the most
devastating war the United States has witnessed. Nonetheless, the Civil War produced two of the most
brilliant minds in American history: Abraham Lincoln and Nathan Bedford Forrest. Abraham Lincoln,
the 16th President of the United States of America, served as the main strategist for the North during
the Civil War and Nathan Bedford Forrest was a Lieutenant General in the Confederate Army. Both
Lincoln and Forrest came from humble origins and worked their way to success. However, Lincoln
gained his position as a President by using his tact and diplomacy although he was not appreciated for
his clever decisions and authority while Forrest became a General through aggression and was praised
by the South as a great tactician and a war hero. Abraham Lincoln s endeavor and success in granting
equal rights for African American will remain forever in the heart of later generations.
First, Abraham Lincoln and Nathan Bedford Forrest were not blessed with fortune and opportunity but
they achieved their goals through perseverance and great effort. Abraham Lincoln was born in 1809

The Complete Persepolis By Marjane Satrapi
There are certain countries that are ran through dictatorship, they abuse the power they have to the
country. In the story, The Complete Persepolis written by Marjane Satrapi, she changes the view
towards Iran through occurrences and eastern fundamentalist ideas. In 1979, there was the Islamic
revolution in Iran. This year was the year that was going to have many changes to the country. In
chapter one of the Veil, there are characters and their freedom of expression being repressed as well as
the movement of repression where the Iranians were repressed in public spaces and by public figures.
In chapter one, the Veil The veil was one of the biggest impacts that Iranian women had to face. In

Even the youngest women are resisting to wear the veil, and is a great example of how western
influence is victimizing women that are oppressed and are categorized into a suppressive group by
wearing the veil. Satrapi was stuck in two mind sets which were the liberal minded world of her
parents and her religiosity. Another crucial moment of the chapter is where she says, I really didn t
know what to think about the veil. Deep down I was very religious but as a family we were very
modern and avant garde (6.1). Satrapi had an important role when this big change happened. She was
an individual who had a strong character as a child. Her family sees being religious while not wearing
a veil compatible, the government believes the opposite. Satrapi foreshadows how at the end of the
story she leaves Iran but never escapes her homeland Iran.
The theme of repression is a never changing issue with Persepolis. The abuse of power happens
because there is a leader trying to run the country in a certain way. Satrapi illustrates how Iranians
were repressed in public spaces and by public figures. Satrapies mom was on the newspapers, because
a German journalist took a photo of her (5). Her mom would hide most of the time, this was creating
some sort of discomfort for her, and obviously she was scared. She even had to dye her hair so she
wouldn t be recognizable. Satrapies mom, makes this a

Human Behaviors In Lord Of The Flies Essay
The Lord of the Flies Human Behaviors The book The Lord of the Flies is about sacrifice, decisions,
and the biggest life choices the boys will ever come across. The main characters Jack, Piggy, Ralph,
Simon, and Roger go through the most biggest obstacles in their lives. The question all the boys get
asked in their minds is life or death. Throughout the whole book you can watch the human behaviors
and see how they change the book and the boys. I think the human behaviors really change the book
and how the story will end. People want to ensure their safety, even if that means being with the
wrong people or group. One example from the book is when most of the boys join Jack s group
because he pressures them out of fear so they are scared of him. Since Jack makes everyone scared of
him everyone wants to be with him so they don t get hurt by him and his tribe. Another example is
when most of the boys think hunting is more important to their safety instead of worrying about
shelter and warmth. Ralph ensures his safety ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main decision that the boys are faced with is if they will choose civilization or savagery. In the
book Jack chooses to go live and hunt with whoever will join him so in Jack s case he chooses
savagery. Ralph chooses to use his leadership skills for the better by deciding to build huts and a fire. I
think Ralph making these good decisions and everyone thinks he s a great leader, and this made Jack
even more mad so that caused Jack to try and take Ralph s power/leadership . The boys in The Lord of
the Flies get so caught up in power they don t care what ends they have to go to. Another reason why
the boys must choose the right leader is so their safety is ensured because if they choose the wrong
leader heir lives could be in more danger. In the book I really think it shows how power can take over
the mind and how the boys are introduced to

preserving our heritage, discovering new knowledge, and sharing our resources with the world. In
fact, according to Clough, it s 4 grand challenges are understanding the American experience, valuing

Analysis Of Zebra By Chaim Potok
In the book Zebra by Chaim Potok, Adam Martin Zebran (called Zebra by his friends) loved to run
because he loved the wind running over his face. One day, Zebra was running down a hill and out of
nowhere a car comes off a side street hitting him. He ends up breaking his hand and injuring his leg.
Afterwards, Zebra becomes depressed and stays away from everyone. One day, a man named John
Wilson, a one armed artist, appears along the fence where he is standing alone. He asks Zebra if his
school would be interested in holding a summer art class. Also, during this conversation, Mr. Wilson

This book s story shows the reader Zebra s problems and solutions that are needed to fix the
wrongdoings of the main character. First, Zebra needed to change his attitude when he broke his arm
and injured his leg. His accident was the catalyst for the rest of the problems in the book. Evidence,
Never, never, never run down the hill so fast you can t stop at the corner. (Potok 48). His mother
repeatedly warned him of not running to fast and not paying attention when he ran. It showed the
reader that he should have been more careful and should have not just run into the middle of the street.
Basically, the accident was the major plot point in the book. Why? Because getting hit by a car led to
his depression and sadness towards in life. The second reason why Zebra needed to change was after
he was hit by the car, Zebra starts becoming more and more lonely and he becomes antisocial (he is
not interacting with people). Remember, he is standing alone by the fence when he meets Mr. Wilson.
It is shown by the line, He stood alone by the chain link fence of the school yard. (Potok 49) It backs
up my reason because of the words he stood alone, shows he was by himself. Studies show people
who do not interact with other people can become depressed. Another amazing reason why change

Stylistic Characteristics Of The Blues
CH11 Question 1 There are several stylistic characteristics of the blues. The first one is the blue notes,
which is the bent technique for lowering the pitch of third and seventh scale degrees in the major
scale(259). The next one is the blue chorus, which is three line lyrics, and it contains fill which is the
instrument response of the call and response between vocal and instrument. The third feature is the
blue progression which is the form of the combination between tonic(I), subdominant(IV), and
dominant(V) chords. It is usually arranged as: I / IV I / V I . Another characteristic is that the timbre of
the vocals in blues have a wide varieties. Every single piece of blue music features a different kind of
vocal texture. The rhythm in the blues has a characteristic called swung which means the long short
pattern of the rhythm. In all three pieces of music, the blue note and the blue chorus are applied to the
composition. The bent texture of the pitch and the neat separation of the lyrics can be easily notice in
the music. The call and response in vocals and instruments, on the other hand, is not so obvious in Can
t Help Lovin Dat Man, but I think, though subtle, it is still there at the end of each line. The rhythm in
the Muleskinner Blues is more steady instead of the long short patterned swung. The swung is not so
obvious in Can t Help Lovin Dat Man, either. Overall, there are some standard blue style in all three
pieces of music, but we

The relatively close pH levels of Tap Water, Spring Water,
Flavored Water, and Seltzer Water.
Introduction
This experiment was performed to investigate the following hypothesis: The following four different
types of drinking water (spring water, seltzer water, tap water, and flavored water) we test will
relatively have the same pH level.
Our group decided to test different types of drinking water to see if a pH level of tap water is
comparable to other types of water. Many people believe that city water has many chemicals, causing

We then moved the electrode in one of the beakers of water we wanted to test. We measured the pH
level, recorded it, then placed it back into the clean water it was orignally in. We repeated these steps

The control treatment in our expirement was thr red cabbage indicator. The dependent variable is the
pH of the water. The independent variable is the different types of drinking water ( tap water, spring
water, seltzer water, and flavored water). The standard variables in the expirement are the clean test

pH 10, and pH 12.

Table 1 shows the standard of the standard of the expirement. It is used to compare the color of the red
cabbage expirement to form an educated guess on the pH level of the different types of water. Table 2
shows the pH numbers we got from the red cabbage expirement and from the pH tester. This
informations enables to compare the red cabbage and the pH tester numbers in order to prove the red
cabbages accuaracy, and to prove our hypothesis that all of the pH numbers of the different types of
drinking water are relatively close.

Differences Of Ashoke And Ashima In The Namesake
Ashima in The Namesake remembers her family after giving birth to her baby boy. She seems to be
happy for her new born baby and this shows that she has no problem with new American identity. But
soon she craves for Indian style celebrations in the hospital. Ashoke and Ashima both miss their
family life in India. Their transparent and unproblematic identities become problematic when Ashima
requests Ashoke to finish his degree as soon as possible because she wants to go back. She tells
Ashoke that she does not want her son to grow up in America. I am saying I don t want to raise Gogol
alone in this country. It s not right. I want to go back (22).
This desire deeply affects their identities and their situation becomes difficult. On the surface their
identities are clear because they are adopting new identities and forgetting the old ones. But in reality
they are unable to forget their older identities. Identities of immigrants are not transparent; they are
unclear, creating problems for them.

Communication Technology And Nonverbal Communication
Technology can be positive through providing face to face live video and audio chats, but can also be
detrimental when it comes to simple texting without nonverbal messages. Facetime has been able to
provide expressions and voice cues that help bring meaning to verbal messages. Nonverbal
communication is hard to fake and is more trustable. While, texting can be detrimental to relationships
because the meanings of words are skewed since they don t have nonverbal cues to give context and
meaning to them. The relationships that is most influenced by technology is my friends at Uconn
because we spend so much time together and the amount of closeness I feel with these people is no
comparable to those affected only by technology because I feel a sort of closeness through
maintaining a close distance to them and I have the ability to exchange vocal and facial cues.
A new communication technology I believe is having a positive influence on interpersonal
relationships is facetime. This is because facetime allows nonverbal communication to happen which is
one of the most important forms of communication as it plays a role in about 60% of all face to face
conversations. For example, me and my best friend would communicate about our daily troubles and
when we wanted to talk about them we would use facetime to talk. We thought this would be
beneficial to our important friendship because through facetime we were able to distinguish whether
the other person was feeling actual sympathy or

Overview of the Clip about Jim Performing a Prank on...
1. Introduction
Workplace related injuries tend to have far reaching repercussions. The concept of safety is rarely
considered as a strong contributor in elimination of workplace related injuries. The culture of space is
one that involves creation of space that enables individuals to feel and be comfortable, welcome, and
safe. This means that there is no discrimination on grounds of biological sex or sexual orientation,
cultural background, age, physical or mental ability, race, or gender. This work explores the clip where
Jim performs a prank on Dwight in the film The Office. This scene shows unsafe working

This means ensuring that the space created does not have impressions of discrimination on grounds of
sex or sexual orientation, cultural background, age, physical or mental disability, race or gender.
Farley et al. notes that safe space must be free from any form of harassment. This should be indicated
in the company s code of professional conduct in a corporate scenario (1626). Rockstrom and others
emphasize on provision of safe space such that the vulnerable in the society have a sense of belonging.
For instance, the disabled should be able to maneuver throughout any office space to access a region
of interest. This should be integrated in the initial or subsequent office designs to ensure the
vulnerable are accommodated.
Hutter captures workplaces where workers are restricted to working in small spaces (30). In such a
scenario, safety standards should be designed to ensure that workers are not trapped in small spaces or
fall prey of serious safety hazards especially chemical related injuries (Hutter 30). This calls for
integration of proper equipment and tools to ensure that workers are protected (Rockstrom and
Karlberg 259). Rescue procedures should remain sound to ensure fast rescue operations with proper
follow up procedures to improve safety standards whenever flaws are identified. Whenever possible,
regular safety trainings and drills should be conducted to ensure that individuals

Leadership Reflection Paper
Leadership is a very broad topic that encompasses many aspects. Throughout my time in the Coast
Guard I have had many good and bad leaders and have learned from both of their styles. My first unit,
CGC ELDERBERRY, had eight members with an Officer in Charge, then BMCS Woody Woodell,
who literally led from the front. I knew it was not normal for an E8 to wash dishes at the time but I
didn t fully appreciate that fact until much later. When at PACTACLET as an E5 the Commanding
Officer, then LCDR Pat DeQuattro, allowed for any member to hold any qualification regardless of
rank or title. On the challenging side of Leadership, I worked for an Officer in Charge who I felt took
my disagreement with him behind closed doors in the open and was too entrenched in rank to listen to
the messenger rather than the message. Those snapshots in time and others experiences have led me to
believe that Leadership is a way of doing things that encourages others to not only want to accomplish
a mission but have the freedom to make decisions as the most efficient way to accomplish that
mission. In order to enhance and promote Leadership, I will focus on three things; developing
cooperative relationships, taking calculated risks and supporting the team. There are three
relationships that need to be developed, up the chain, down the chain and most importantly laterally.
That lateral leadership will best be accomplished for me by having a robust and active Chief s Mess. I

Winston Salem Code Of Ordinances Essay
Freedom of speech, the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, Congress shall make no
law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the
freedom of speech, or the press; or the right of the people peacefully to assemble, and to petition the
Government for a redress of grievances. The First Amendment is a primary tenant among the liberties
our forefathers intended to be bequeathed to future generations of Americans. They sought a world
better than the one that they were born or immigrated into under British rule. The founding fathers did
not intend to restrict the natural rights they felt were restricted and stripped away by the British crown.
The American Revolution was ignited because of taxes and the attempt of the British to confiscate
arms, but at the heart of the struggle was the desire of those Patriots to have liberty, and they
encapsulated one of these natural rights in the First Amendment. The founders established for all
Americans a nation of laws. The States on behalf of the people negotiated and agreed upon a
constitution in 1789. During the ratification process, debates in several of the statehouses argued that
rights they felt were inalienable were not defined or protected. The first Congress saw to it that certain

The Old Guitarists In Laurie Adams A History Of Western Art
In Laurie Adams A History of Western Art there are pieces of art that have lots of meaning and
representations one in particular being Pablo Picasso s drawing titled The Old Guitarist (468). The
image chosen shows a man sitting on the ground, wearing tattered clothes and playing a guitar.
Looking closely, the man s frame appears long and bony, paired with tattered clothes. His face looks
sad and glum while his body seems to be leaning in, listening intently to his guitar as his hands go
over the strings. The major point for choosing this image is for the fact that the artist, Picasso, chose to
represent the image using only shades of blue. Idioms are words or phrases that are taken for its literal

Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants By Marc Prensky
Americans are known to reflect on East Asian education systems, then compare those systems to the
education system here in the United States. When doing so, people tend to come to the same general
conclusion: there are intensifying problems within the American education system. Marc Prensky, the
author of Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants, argues that the real issue with educating today s youth
is that our education system s design does not accommodate today s students since they are not the
same as the students who molded our education system years and years ago. Today s students are
referred to as digital natives and their educators are referred to as digital immigrants. Delivered

Prensky s strategy of doing just that with his own bold, personal technique is what thrusts his
argument. If he did not utilize syntax in the way that he did, his argument would have come off plain
and uniform. And without his personal diction, the tone of the article would have been dry. Finally,
Prensky s strong metaphor added depth to his argument, while getting the reader to think should we
accommodate them, or should they accommodate us? Using such a prominent metaphor raises the
eyebrows of Digital Immigrants, but also gets them to listen. In sum, Prensky drew predominantly on
pathos with his use of strategic shaming, but also touched on ethos when categorizing himself within
the very group that he shamed, and finally using logos with his overall us or them metaphor. All in all,
without his bold rhetorical strategy, the same message would have been said, but with a less
convincing delivery style, and the argument would not have been as effective. Prensky s additions are
what pushed his argument right where it needed to be in order to give it the best chance of convincing
the educators of older generations to accommodate the learning needs of the students of newer

Old Spice Advertisements
Appealing to an audience s deep personal emotions plays an important role in advertisement. Many
exaggerated emotions can easily persuade the viewer to believe them and search for a way to escape
or solve that present emotion. Insecurity is prominent in almost all the newest advertisements. Giving
in to society s expectations to beauty, commercials direct themselves to make the viewer feel bad
about their image. Trying to instill anxiety or a lack of confidence can compel the viewer to buy their
product, and using this strategy not only is geared towards women, who are given higher standards,

Old Spice s use of hyperbole is not in the dialogue, but in the visuals they use. The transition from the
average bathroom, to ideal places of people s fantasy s, such as a boat or a tropical island, suggests
that their product will give you a life similar. These visuals affect both men and women that watch the
ad. The man in the commercial is fit, seemingly rich, and maintains eye contact with the viewer.
Doing so utilizes the common desires of women to pursue their own argument with their partners into
buying the product. The same man also sparks the insecurity in the male viewers. Using props such as
diamonds or tickets to a show, can convince an audience that the product they are trying to sell can
give the consumer the same fantastical effects. While exaggerating the appeal to women s desires and
men s insecurity the Old Spice commercial manages to compare the actor to the average man but to

The Baghavad Gita, Yoga Sutras Of Patanjai, And The Hatha
The Baghavad Gita, Yoga Sutras of Patanjai, and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika are all considered to be
revolutionary texts. Their teachings depart from earlier traditions and propose many approaches to
enlightenment. Through their definition of yoga or their philosophical goals, each contain some
similarities as well as aspects that make each of them unique.
The epic text of the Bhagavad Gita defines yoga as the skill of union with the ultimate reality or the
absolute. The work comes to us in the form of dialogue between Lord Sri Krishna and the princely
warrior Arjuna, which occurs just before the onset of the devastating Mahabharata war. The Yoga
Sutras by Patanjali also define yoga as a union of the parts of ourselves, and sutra means ... Show

This first step is that the student is ready to listen. Then the student ruminates on what the guru says.
Then finally the student gets meaning from the gurus teachings based on his concentration and
meditation on it. Upanishad means to sit near which represents the relationship between the guru and
the student. In the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the system was first associated with the Nath Yogis, but also
connected to other yogis lineages of the time. The Naths recruited without the regard to caste or
religion and took many muslims, sufi fakirs and dasnamyi into their fold. Here, yoga is meant for the
good of all creatures, and a true Yogi was always desirous of benefitting as many men as possible He
will find a true and earnest student who will not trifle with this knowledge. Each of these texts
represent the importance of Upanishadic learning. The dialogue of the Gita goes through a series of
concepts such as the body/soul distinction, the principle of nonattached action, the virtues of discipline
(yoga) and meditation. Jhana yoga is the first stage where a person acquires the knowledge of the
inner self through study and contemplation and becomes aware of the importance of realizing his true
self and achieving salvation. After acquiring knowledge, he turns to karma yoga to discharge his

Essay on Avian Influenza and Its Expected Ramifications
Over the past fifteen years H5N1 influenza (also known as Avian Flu or Bird Flu) has become a
common topic of speculation and debate worldwide, causing quite a bit of confusion about its possible
impacts on our society. At this point in time it is generally recognized by the international medical
community that Avian Flu is bound to become a pandemic, most likely within the next ten years.
Research on Avian Flu and its effects have led many scholars to make grave predictions of major
global turmoil while a small portion of medical scientists remain skeptical, believing we will have

There are many different types of flu, categorized most broadly by influenza A, B, and C strains. They
are further classified by genetic differences represented by H and N. Seasonal flus are either type A or
B and classified by H3N2, swine flu (a flu strain you may remember by the media stir it caused in
2009) is type A and H1N1, and avian flu is type A and H5N1. Type A flu strains are considered to be
the most severe and are usually the only type of influenza that can cause a pandemic. On paper the
avian flu may seem like the flu strains that we experience every year, but H5N1 is certainly unique.
The first reason for this is that research has suggested that for currently idiopathic reasons the avian
flu seems to have a predisposition to mutation, enabling it to rapidly create new strains that may be
more dangerous, more contagious, or even resistant to antibiotics (which has already been observed in
at least one case of an infected Vietnamese teenager). The reason avian flu has not yet caused any
major outbreaks is because right now the virus is unable to be transmitted from human to human, only
from bird to bird or bird to human. With such a high tendency to mutate, it is only a matter of time
before the avian flu mutates into a strain that can be transmitted between

Although both political parties attempt to make their opinion appear as the superior opinion by using
violence and discrimination, it solves absolutely nothing for their cause. The modern day United

Explain Why I Admire Martin Luther King Jr.
First and for most, I admire Martin Luther King Jr. because he was exceptionally brave for making a

person he was. Another reason, I admire MLK, is for being the successful preacher he was in such a

Fantasy Literature and Fantastic Language

For the assignment I am to choose one poem and one work of fantasy from two different cultural
traditions. Choosing the fantasy was easy, but choosing the poem was a little difficult for me. For the
poem, I chose High Flight by John Gillespie Magee, Jr. The poem was listed in our textbook as a

period. It is also very sophisticated form and therefore not found much in poetry for children(Russell,

Especially in the world today. Poems do not take that much time to read or comprehend. They are
simple and get the point across in a fun way. After reading this poem I think it represents kinesthetic
images because kinesthetic images refers to actions or motions. The work of fantasy I chose is Peter
and Wendy. A fantasy is any story of the impossible. Peter and Wendy is a fantasy story that is now
called Peter Pan. Peter is a boy who does not want to grow up. He flew into Wendy s room and lost his
shadow. Once they found his shadow Wendy sewed it back on so he would not loose it again. While
getting his shadow sewn back on Peter began telling Wendy and her siblings stories of Neverland. He

Peter. Peter sprinkled them with pixie dust and they all flew to Neverland where they met The Lost

my opinion this fantasy would be considered a journey fantasy because they all go on a journey to
Neverland. It can also be considered a magical fantasy because people do not really fly. I think

At present, the Internet and other technology are well developed and keep improving. People use those
new tools to do everything, and try hard to make human life easier and more perfect. From business to
finances; industry to entertainment; services to education, the use of the Internet has increased and

people realize the fact that the Internet is so open and free that everyone can write anything on the

THE GRASSHOPPER AND THE BELL CRICKET

The grasshopper and the bell cricket is a short story, written by Yasunari Kawabata, written in a
narrative perspective of someone watching children searching for insects using colored and decorated
lanterns. I would like to think that the author is trying to symbolize life, and that it is not only one path
to go. We are all aiming for acceptance and to fit in to the society, but this story tells us that

Even the narrator comments I felt slightly jealous of the boy, and sheepish . When the boy gives away
the grasshopper to a girl, who was one of many who wanted it, the girl shouted out Oh! It s not a

I read an analysis on this short story on a blog, called Generation , and I agree with his thoughts
behind the symbolism of the transformation of the bell cricket from the boy to the girl, he states that it
could be translated into the development of love and how, as rare as it is in the wild, one can captivate
with a simple giving gesture. The narrator goes on to explain the rarity of such a find; even if you have
the wit to look by yourself in a bush away from the other children, there are not many bell crickets in
the world.
I agree on the romantic messages behind this story, but I would also like to think that it describes, as I
mentioned in the beginning of the analysis, life in general with the hunting of acceptation, that it is not
only one way to go. It does not matter what color or decorations your lantern is, a multi colored is just
as beautiful.

Essay on A Theater of My Own
A Theater of My Own
My grandmother, Annie was a seanchai, an Irish storyteller. She was the only great actor I have known
intimately. Her stage was the kitchen of her cottage in the West of Ireland and her stories were about
her friends and neighbors. She recreated their trials and triumphs and with her talent for mimicry
accorded each a speaking part. Her one woman show held me spellbound. She commanded my tears
and fits of laughter depending on the content of her story or dictated by a whim. It was she who made
me stage struck years before I even saw a stage.
I was thirteen before I acted my first conventional role. My high school English teacher, Mrs. Doyle,
directed us in Strindberg s Motherlove. I played the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The self deprecating wit prevalent throughout his works was reminiscent of the Irish sense of humor. I
read every one of his books available in our school library and then moved on to the Boston Public
Library where I discovered the story telling gifts of his brother I.J. Singer and his contemporary,
Chaim Grade. Having exhausted the English language collection of Yiddish writers, I became
determined to explore their works in their original form.
Upon entering university, I decided to concentrate my studies on the language and literature of
Yiddish. Although no Yiddish courses were offered at Boston University, the University Professor s
Program allowed me to design my own course of study. I studied Yiddish and Hebrew at Hebrew
College, the National Yiddish Book Center, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Harvard
University.
It was Yiddish and another dynamic teacher that pointed me again toward the theater. Last year in
what was to be the most exciting and challenging course of my college career, I studied Yiddish
theater with Professor Ruth Wisse. My deepest understanding of the Yiddish language and literature
came from her class. She began her lecture by putting a play in context and placing its author in world
literature. The second half of class was devoted to reading carefully prepared works aloud with each
student playing a different role. She pushed and prodded us until we came up with an intelligent and

Phoenix Water Quality
The city of Phoenix provides drinking water to more than 1.5 million Phoenix residents within 540
square mile service area. 95 % of Phoenix s water are sourced from surface water (lakes and rivers)
and the remaining water comes from groundwater (wells). In May of each year, the city of Phoenix
distribute and post a water quality report that contains important information about the quality of
Phoenix water (Phoenix s water quality, n.d.). Water hardness is one of the important info revealed in
the Phoenix water quality report, which I would like to discuss it. Simply hardness is the amount of
dissolved calcium and magnesium in the water. Hardness impacts the water quality throughout the
aesthetic acceptability (calcium, magnesium, and dissolved solids concentration) by consumers. Since
water known as universal solvent these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a result, clothes laundered in hard water may look dirty and feel harsh and scratchy. Hard water
causes a film and scale deposit builds upon glass shower doors, shower walls, bathtubs, sinks, and
faucets. Furthermore, scale deposit builds up in a water heater and in the pipe system (distributing
system) resulting in energy consumption increment and water flow reduction as the pipes become
clogged with the scale (Braff, D., 2012, April 25). There is no Primary or Secondary standard for
water hardness issued by EPA. Also, hardness has no health risk, as a matter of fact, drinking hard
water generally adds a small amount toward total calcium and magnesium human nutritional needs.
(Hard Water Hardness Calcium Magnesium Water Corrosion Mineral Scale, n.d.). As the hardness of
water is classified as: (0 to 60) mg/l as calcium carbonate is classified as a soft water and (60 to 120)
mg/l as a moderately hard water and (120 to 180) mg/l as a hard water and more than 180 mg/L as a
very hard water. (Water quality criteria,

Bystanders In Bullying
Alternatives
However, teachers are not the only ones helping the victims. Several research studies have looked at
the role of bystanders in bullying students. Teachers and students who witness bullying can work
together to reduce bullying in schools and classrooms. But there is also evidence that those who were
bystanders were not willing to help the victims (Espelage, Green, Polanin, 2012). Students often do
not support victims when there are multiple witnesses (Salmicalli, 2010). Students expect someone
else to intervene or ignore the victim or may consider the bullying to be a joke ( Terasahjo Salmivalli,
2003). Consequently, bullied victims feel that they are not only suffering pain from being bullied, but
also from being ignored by peers (Salmavalli Poskirparta, 2012). ... Show more content on

results by assisting the bully and redirecting the bully to be reduce (Karna, Voeten, Little, Poskiparta,

Jealousy, Love, And Death
Shakespeare is known for his use of recurring themes, particularly those of betrayal, love, and death.
These themes are present in Othello. However, the most dynamic of themes in this play is jealousy.
White describes jealousy as a complex of thoughts, feelings, and actions which follow threats to self
esteem and/or threats to the existence or quality of a relationship (qtd in UK essays par 1). Two types
of jealousy are presented to the audience in Othello; the kind of jealousy that is fear of losing what one
has, and the kind that is envious of what others have. Jealousy is a prevalent theme in Othello; it is
rooted by love and hope, and it leads to betrayal and death. Because of the evil nature of jealousy, the
play unfolds under the authority of Iago, who uses jealousy to drive the characters actions, and
ultimately concludes in the downfall of a noble man (UK Essays par 1). The audience is presented
with examples of both forms of jealousy as themes in Othello. The two themes of jealousy differ, but
are also quite similar. The envious jealousy is portrayed by two of the main characters, Roderigo and
Iago. Both men are willing to do anything it takes to get what they want. In the beginning of the play,
Roderigo, a rich gentleman, and Iago, the villain, are introduced to the audience. Iago is envious of
Cassio, who was chosen by Othello to be his lieutenant. Roderigo is jealous of Othello marrying
Desdemona, with whom Roderigo is in love. Iago s jealousy leads him to

Genoghhis Khan And The Legacy Of Genghis Khan
Genghis Khan was undoubtedly one of the most vicious and brutal leaders in world history. However,
the legacy of Khan is also one of cultural development, artistic achievement, an elegant way of life
and an entire continent united under the Pax Mongolia. The famed leader and his successors created
the largest empire ever to exist, spanning across the entire Asian continent. An empire as such could
not have been created without strong leadership, stellar organizational skills and the most resilient
army ever known. Genghis Khan may be well known for his brutality and destructive cavalry
however, Khan did good for his own people and earned the Mongolians a reputation of glory. Genghis
Khan was an emperor, who lead his people in such a way that was accepted in the tenth century. Back
then war was a very reality, and if it involved massacres, then it was generally tolerated. However,
many people forget that Khan s rampage left such a path of destruction that he irrevocably destroyed
entire empires and populations in the interest of habitable environments. In more recent times, people
have pointed out that Joseph Stalin was responsible for nearly twenty million deaths. This death toll
would have made him more brutal than the Nazis, who held a death total of seventeen million
people(White). Yet, Stalin cannot even compare to the brutality of the Mongols under the leadership of
Khan. Genghis Khan was responsible for the deaths of roughly forty million people, and he was glad

Death Penalty Is Cruel And Unusual Punishment
The legal executions first started in California when it was under the Practices Act in 1851. Then in
February 14th 1872 it was put in the Penal Code. Capital punish in counties continued until an
amendment by the legislature in 1891 said that it could only happen in the State Prisons picked by the
court. The first state execution in California happens on March 3rd 1893 at San Quentin and the first
one in Folsom was on December 13th 1895. In the 1937 s the legislature decided that instead of
hanging people they were going to use lethal gas. This did not affect the people that were already
sentenced to be hanged and the last hanging was in December 3rd 1937 at Folsom and the last hanging
in Quentin was hold on May 1st 1942. Twenty five years after 1967 because of the United States
Supreme Court choices there were no executions. In 1962 the Supreme Court thought that death
penalty as cruel and unusual punishment. Because of this 107 people had their sentences changed to
something that was not death. In November 1972 nine months after they had this choice the California
electorate amended the state constitution overruled it. Then in 1973 the Supreme Court decided that
the death penalty was unconstitutional. The California legislation was passed in 1973, which meant
that the death penalty could only happen under certain conditions. These conditions were kidnapping
if the person dies, train wrecking if any person dies, assault by a life prisoner if the victim dies within

Misconceptions Of Ahab s Hatred In Moby Dick

preternatural, not merely vengeance for the loss of his leg. for, Ahab perceives the great whale as
possessing characteristics beyond its apparent nature. Starbuck cries, vengeance on a dumb brute!...
that simply smote thee from blindes instinct! Madness! To be enraged with a dumb thing, captain
Ahab, seems blasphemous. (Moby Dick) having heard this, Ahab replies, addressing the entire crew,

The San Andreas Fault and its role in Plate Tectonics and Earthquake Prediction
The San Andreas Fault is one of the most widely studied faults in the world. Scientists use an array of
methods in collecting data and providing analysis of fault characteristics both past and present.
Presently there are many differing hypothesis and models used to describe crustal movements and
deformation within the Pacific and North American plate boundary. Historical earthquakes along this
fault have proven to be rather large and devastating. This is important since the San Andreas Fault
runs along many highly populated areas throughout Northern and Southern California. Through
further research and analysis of this fault system scientists hope to solve ... Show more content on

The Loma Prieta earthquake occurred on October 17, 1989 at 5:04 p.m. It had a moment magnitude of
6.9, and lasted 15 to 20 seconds. The epicenter was near Loma Prieta, and this earthquake again
caused severe damage to the San Francisco Bay Area, this time claiming 63 lives but almost 4,000
people were injured as a result of the earthquake.
The earthquakes above give a brief glimpse into the importance of analyzing past and present fault
configurations. If scientists could make a breakthrough in this area perhaps we could better predict
earthquake activity and better prepare ourselves if it is deemed a potential disaster is looming.
Methods of Analysis
Scientist are struggling to come up with a widely accepted model that will explain the role of non
vertical strike slip fault segments, crustal movement and deformation within Pacific North American
plate boundary. Multiple methods of analysis are being used; some of which are described below. *
Measurements of Geologic uplift and slip rates in many areas of the San Andreas Fault a detailed
record of strike slip activity is provided. By studying the sediments deposited in a given area and
comparing them to an established age control it is possible to determine the rates and timing of
changes of tectonic deformation. * Velocity Fields and Pole of Rotation Using the Southern California
Earthquake Center s Velocity Field, which contains

The Realpolitik Foreign Policy Of Otto Von Bismarck
The realpolitik foreign policy of Otto Von Bismarck contained many similarities as well as differences
when compared and contrasted to the weltpolitik foreign policy of his successor Kaiser Wilhelm II. In
1890, Wilhelm II forced Bismarck s resignation and ascended the German throne, leading Germany
into a militaristic path, failing to maintain Germany s allies, and plunging it into one of the most
famous wars of history, World War I. Bismarck was originally an expansionist who aimed to make
Prussia a powerful part of Germany, however, by 1870, he gave up his expansionist ideas and became
content with the land that Germany already had power over. Bismarck s cautious foreign policy
favored peace over war, creating treaties and maintaining Germany s land rather than expanding
Germany by embarking in war. He sought to maintain good relations with France and Russia and kept
France isolated. Furthermore, his policy secured peace within the five major powers of Europe by
creating alliances. The Bismarckian system created allies between the other powers of Europe, secured
Germany s land, and avoided conflicts with France and Russia.
Although a few similarities can be found between Wilhelm and Bismarck s foreign policies, the
policies had major differences in their approaches and styles of execution. Wilhelm s policy posed
more of an aggressive approach and made Germany a threat to other countries as well as involved it
into conflicts. He wanted to increase Germany s prestige as a

About 46 percent of all tax filers (individuals or households) pay no federal income taxes each year because of various exclusions. More than half of the tax revenue lost to the most common tax exclusions stays in the pockets of the richest one fifth of Americans, according to an analysis by the Congressional Budget Office. By contrast, high earners who paid no tax were primarily able to do so because of a wide array of other special provisions in tax law. Roughly 1,000 of the 4,000 millionaire non payers in 2011 did so because their income that year was locked away in individual retirement accounts not subject to federal taxes, according to Roberton Williams of the Urban Institute, one of the authors of the Tax Policy Center analysis. • 4. How Is Atticus Finch Courageous Courage is an interesting word. Courage can be a feeling or an act. In the novel To Kill a Mockibngbird the characters Mrs Dubose, Tom Robinson and Atticus Finch all demonstrate what true courage really is. The first character I will discuss is Mrs Dubose. Mrs Dubose is a very old woman battling an illness and a morphine addiction. Secondly, I will discuss Tom Robinson. Tom is a black man who is (falsely) accused of rape by Mayella Ewell. Finally I will explain why Atticus Finch is courageous. Atticus is the father of the novel s narrator Scout or Jean Louise Finch. All three characters demonstrate great bravery throughout the novel, each have their hardships and each try to push through the adversity to their best ability. To begin, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a reader, I found Atticus to be the most courageous character in the novel. The reasons behind this statement are that Atticus defends a black man in court, he stands up to the lynch mob in front of the jailhouse and because he can fight without words. First, Atticus is very valorous for taking the Tom Robinson case. For a white man to be acquainted with a black man who was not his slave was rather sporadic. Even after all of the physical and verbal abuse Atticus took he kept his word and defended Tom for all he was worth. I can t stay here all day and this summer is going to be a hot one. (Atticus, Page 128) As a reader, this was the greatest act of courage executed in the novel. For Atticus to risk his respect, family and life to protect a black man took great bravery and sacrifice. Secondly, Atticus protected Tom from he lynch mob at the jailhouse. As the men poured out of the car towards Atticus, he was undaunted buy the moving shadows approaching him. In ones and twos, men got out of the cars. Shadows became substance as lights revealed solid shapes moving toward the jail door. Atticus remained where he was. (Scout, Page 152 153) Atticus fearlessly confronted the mass of angry men and reasoned with them until there is an interruption courtesy of Scout. The focus of the book is mainly directed towards the way young people fit in a society that was based on rigid hierarchical system that put people into different classes according to wealth, education, reputation and cultural background. Each of the societal rankings has a given set of behavioural patterns that are expected from them by the society as a whole and these expectations are a source of frustration, obstacles, misunderstanding and separation for the young people as they try to fit in. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Making friends and trying to figure out true friends from false ones is a major part of the plot and it affects all the concerned characters. This issue of friendship is seen when Isabelle is not particularly concerned or ashamed that James is Catherine, her friend s brother. We see that she is used to not having and does not attach much importance to permanent relationships and this can be traced back to her being raised in that big city environment that is not conducive to long lasting relationships. Catherine on the other hand loves and cherishes good friendships and, unlike Isabelle, she grew up in that small community environment that fosters such true and long lasting friendships. Closely related to the issue of friendship in the plot is the issue of families. Different types of families are discussed in the book and put in contrast. These include rich families and poor families, families with many kids versus those with few, families with both parents as opposed to those without, and lastly families living in the rural areas versus those living in the cities. This is clearly demonstrated when Isabelle s brother, John, tries to convince the General to deny giving consent to the marriage between Henry and Catherine only because Catherine s family, the Morlands, was poor. • 8. The Important Aspects Of Effective Nursing Communication is one of the most important aspects in effective nursing. For a nurse to be successful, communicating with patients, families, physicians, peers and ancillary departments is necessary. Communication is not only verbal with language, words and sound, but also non verbal. Non verbal behaviors such as touch, facial expressions, eye contact and movement, posture and silence make up more than half of the art of communication (Giger, 2013). The population in the United States is comprised of various cultures with different views of the meaning of non verbal communication. Understanding the views of various cultures can create a positive and healing environment for the patient, as well as increase patient and employee satisfaction (Starr Wallace, 2011). Many patients feel comforted by touch; a hand on the shoulder can help to alleviate fear in the hospital setting. Many cultures from Latin America, Spain and France are extremely affectionate and communicate through touch (Giger, 2013). These cultures often share kisses on the cheek, hugs and handshakes when greeting one another. As a nurse, I have experienced the embrace of a family from Mexico showing appreciation for taking care of their loved one. It is important to understand that other patients with different cultural backgrounds such as those from Germany and England, might find this type of physical contact invasive and inappropriate (Giger, 2013). Dantès and Jekyll are trapped more so than Frankenstein, as they are the same person as their creations, whereas Frankenstein is trapped by being unable to bring himself to create a female creature due to the effect it may have on society. Frankenstein s identity is called into question here, as he becomes almost defined, in the Creature s eyes, as being unable to keep his word. When Dantès is imprisoned, he loses his name, Hyde is known solely by his appearance, and the Creature is never given a name. This contrasts with the socially accepted Monte Cristo, Henry Jekyll and Victor Frankenstein. Their names allow them to be accepted by, not forgotten about, shunned, or left incapable of joining, society. Unlike Hyde and Dantès, the Creature is never named. He is constantly referred to as a creature and a miserable fiend. This mainly comes through Frankenstein s point of view, which suggests that the Creature s monstrousness stems from Frankenstein s perceptions of him and the way he is originally presented to the reader. Had the novel been written from his point of view, it can be suggested that the Creature would not be viewed as such a monster by society, and readers would have more sympathy for him. The absence causes him to be dehumanised in a similar way to Dantès, who is renamed Number 34. Hyde, however, is named, allowing Jekyll s view of his alter ego being natural and human to be more accepted by society. Hyde s naturalness can said to be due to his evilness as he represents the original sin found inside all of us. Dantès and the Creature are shunned by society when they are without a name because they are distanced from society. Whilst Dantès distance is literal as he has been taken away from Marseille, the Creature s distance remains figurative he follows Frankenstein and is in fact very close to society. His distance stems from his hideousness and the absence of a name to introduce himself by. He is left to forge his own identity which comes as an incredibly hard task. Modern readers have felt sympathy for the Creature in his struggle to be accepted: Shelley s use of his point of view in the novel aids this, however at the time of writing, readers generally viewed the Creature as a ... • 10. Of Abraham Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln And The President Of... War is chaos and the devil itself. It represents the cruelty and darkness in the human heart. In 1861, a Civil War broke out between the North and the South. A soldier who served in the Civil War said in a letter to his parents, Many became ill from exposure and starvation, and were left on the road. ( Letters and Diaries, 1862) The war continued for four years and was considered by historians as the most devastating war the United States has witnessed. Nonetheless, the Civil War produced two of the most brilliant minds in American history: Abraham Lincoln and Nathan Bedford Forrest. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States of America, served as the main strategist for the North during the Civil War and Nathan Bedford Forrest was a Lieutenant General in the Confederate Army. Both Lincoln and Forrest came from humble origins and worked their way to success. However, Lincoln gained his position as a President by using his tact and diplomacy although he was not appreciated for his clever decisions and authority while Forrest became a General through aggression and was praised by the South as a great tactician and a war hero. Abraham Lincoln s endeavor and success in granting equal rights for African American will remain forever in the heart of later generations. Even the youngest women are resisting to wear the veil, and is a great example of how western influence is victimizing women that are oppressed and are categorized into a suppressive group by wearing the veil. Satrapi was stuck in two mind sets which were the liberal minded world of her parents and her religiosity. Another crucial moment of the chapter is where she says, I really didn t know what to think about the veil. Deep down I was very religious but as a family we were very modern and avant garde (6.1). Satrapi had an important role when this big change happened. She was an individual who had a strong character as a child. Her family sees being religious while not wearing a veil compatible, the government believes the opposite. Satrapi foreshadows how at the end of the story she leaves Iran but never escapes her homeland Iran. The theme of repression is a never changing issue with Persepolis. Human Behaviors In Lord Of The Flies Essay The Lord of the Flies Human Behaviors The book The Lord of the Flies is about sacrifice, decisions, and the biggest life choices the boys will ever come across. The main characters Jack, Piggy, Ralph, Simon, and Roger go through the most biggest obstacles in their lives. The question all the boys get asked in their minds is life or death. Throughout the whole book you can watch the human behaviors and see how they change the book and the boys. I think the human behaviors really change the book and how the story will end. People want to ensure their safety, even if that means being with the wrong people or group. One example from the book is when most of the boys join Jack s group because he pressures them out of fear so they are scared of him. Since Jack makes everyone scared of him everyone wants to be with him so they don t get hurt by him and his tribe. Another example is when most of the boys think hunting is more important to their safety instead of worrying about shelter and warmth. Ralph ensures his safety ... I think Ralph making these good decisions and everyone thinks he s a great leader, and this made Jack even more mad so that caused Jack to try and take Ralph s power/leadership . The boys in The Lord of the Flies get so caught up in power they don t care what ends they have to go to. • 17. Stylistic Characteristics Of The Blues CH11 Question 1 There are several stylistic characteristics of the blues. The first one is the blue notes, which is the bent technique for lowering the pitch of third and seventh scale degrees in the major scale(259). The next one is the blue chorus, which is three line lyrics, and it contains fill which is the instrument response of the call and response between vocal and instrument. The third feature is the blue progression which is the form of the combination between tonic(I), subdominant(IV), and dominant(V) chords. It is usually arranged as: I / IV I / V I . Another characteristic is that the timbre of the vocals in blues have a wide varieties. Every single piece of blue music features a different kind of vocal texture. The rhythm in the blues has a characteristic called swung which means the long short pattern of the rhythm. In all three pieces of music, the blue note and the blue chorus are applied to the composition. The bent texture of the pitch and the neat separation of the lyrics can be easily notice in the music. The call and response in vocals and instruments, on the other hand, is not so obvious in Can t Help Lovin Dat Man, but I think, though subtle, it is still there at the end of each line. The rhythm in the Muleskinner Blues is more steady instead of the long short patterned swung. The swung is not so obvious in Can t Help Lovin Dat Man, either. Overall, there are some standard blue style in all three pieces of music, but we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Communication Technology And Nonverbal Communication Technology can be positive through providing face to face live video and audio chats, but can also be detrimental when it comes to simple texting without nonverbal messages. Facetime has been able to provide expressions and voice cues that help bring meaning to verbal messages. Nonverbal communication is hard to fake and is more trustable. While, texting can be detrimental to relationships because the meanings of words are skewed since they don t have nonverbal cues to give context and meaning to them. The relationships that is most influenced by technology is my friends at Uconn because we spend so much time together and the amount of closeness I feel with these people is no comparable to those affected only by technology because I feel a sort of closeness through maintaining a close distance to them and I have the ability to exchange vocal and facial cues. A new communication technology I believe is having a positive influence on interpersonal relationships is facetime. This is because facetime allows nonverbal communication to happen which is one of the most important forms of communication as it plays a role in about 60% of all face to face conversations. For example, me and my best friend would communicate about our daily troubles and when we wanted to talk about them we would use facetime to talk. This calls for integration of proper equipment and tools to ensure that workers are protected (Rockstrom and Karlberg 259). • 23. Leadership Reflection Paper Leadership is a very broad topic that encompasses many aspects. Throughout my time in the Coast Guard I have had many good and bad leaders and have learned from both of their styles. My first unit, CGC ELDERBERRY, had eight members with an Officer in Charge, then BMCS Woody Woodell, who literally led from the front. I knew it was not normal for an E8 to wash dishes at the time but I didn t fully appreciate that fact until much later. When at PACTACLET as an E5 the Commanding Officer, then LCDR Pat DeQuattro, allowed for any member to hold any qualification regardless of rank or title. On the challenging side of Leadership, I worked for an Officer in Charge who I felt took my disagreement with him behind closed doors in the open and was too entrenched in rank to listen to the messenger rather than the message. Those snapshots in time and others experiences have led me to believe that Leadership is a way of doing things that encourages others to not only want to accomplish a mission but have the freedom to make decisions as the most efficient way to accomplish that mission. In order to enhance and promote Leadership, I will focus on three things; developing cooperative relationships, taking calculated risks and supporting the team. There are three relationships that need to be developed, up the chain, down the chain and most importantly laterally. That lateral leadership will best be accomplished for me by having a robust and active Chief s Mess. I have recently taken ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The First Amendment is a primary tenant among the liberties our forefathers intended to be bequeathed to future generations of Americans. They sought a world better than the one that they were born or immigrated into under British rule. The founding fathers did not intend to restrict the natural rights they felt were restricted and stripped away by the British crown. The American Revolution was ignited because of taxes and the attempt of the British to confiscate arms, but at the heart of the struggle was the desire of those Patriots to have liberty, and they encapsulated one of these natural rights in the First Amendment. The founders established for all Americans a nation of laws. The States on behalf of the people negotiated and agreed upon a constitution in 1789. Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants By Marc Prensky Americans are known to reflect on East Asian education systems, then compare those systems to the education system here in the United States. When doing so, people tend to come to the same general conclusion: there are intensifying problems within the American education system. Marc Prensky, the author of Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants, argues that the real issue with educating today s youth is that our education system s design does not accommodate today s students since they are not the same as the students who molded our education system years and years ago. Today s students are referred to as digital natives and their educators are referred to as digital immigrants. Delivered through Prensky s syntax/diction and his overall audacious ... If he did not utilize syntax in the way that he did, his argument would have come off plain and uniform. And without his personal diction, the tone of the article would have been dry. Finally, Prensky s strong metaphor added depth to his argument, while getting the reader to think should we accommodate them, or should they accommodate us? Using such a prominent metaphor raises the eyebrows of Digital Immigrants, but also gets them to listen. In sum, Prensky drew predominantly on pathos with his use of strategic shaming, but also touched on ethos when categorizing himself within the very group that he shamed, and finally using logos with his overall us or them metaphor. All in all, without his bold rhetorical strategy, the same message would have been said, but with a less convincing delivery style, and the argument would not have been as effective. Type A flu strains are considered to be the most severe and are usually the only type of influenza that can cause a pandemic. On paper the avian flu may seem like the flu strains that we experience every year, but H5N1 is certainly unique. The first reason for this is that research has suggested that for currently idiopathic reasons the avian flu seems to have a predisposition to mutation, enabling it to rapidly create new strains that may be more dangerous, more contagious, or even resistant to antibiotics (which has already been observed in at least one case of an infected Vietnamese teenager). The reason avian flu has not yet caused any major outbreaks is because right now the virus is unable to be transmitted from human to human, only from bird to bird or bird to human. • 38. Should the Internet Replace the Book As the Chief Tool of... At present, the Internet and other technology are well developed and keep improving. People use those new tools to do everything, and try hard to make human life easier and more perfect. From business to finances; industry to entertainment; services to education, the use of the Internet has increased and become more mainstream. Some people believe that the Internet and other electronic technology can replace all kind of jobs that humans do, including teaching students with screens and keyboards instead of books. They emphasize that the Internet can help people interact to each other beyond the barrier of distance, so books are somehow not necessary in human lives. However, in my opinion, this idea cannot be more ridiculous. Books are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... . . . all it needs is light, a human eye, and a human mind (2008, ¶ 2). On the other hand, generally speaking, the publishing process for the book is more stringent and credible than online resources. As people realize the fact that the Internet is so open and free that everyone can write anything on the web, a great amount of misleading information have been circulated for perusal around the network. It is a great challenge to distinguish which of them is true or credible; however, information from books is basically, generally believable. One of the reasons for this is that people can easily find out who the author and publisher are of a book. In contrast, an article from a web page may have trouble to prove its credibility. In short, the Internet cannot always provide valuable message and information that respects to intellectual property rights. Therefore, people should keep using book as the chief tool of learning. Another important reason why the Internet and other technology should not replace the book is that the use of the Internet and other technology may be a travers of developing social skills. It has been confirmed by sociologists and anthropologists that the face to face communication between people is too important to be ignored in the society. To be honest, it is ... Analysis the Grasshopper and the Bell Cricket ANALYSIS THE GRASSHOPPER AND THE BELL CRICKET BY: YASUNARI KAWABATA The grasshopper and the bell cricket is a short story, written by Yasunari Kawabata, written in a narrative perspective of someone watching children searching for insects using colored and decorated lanterns. I would like to think that the author is trying to symbolize life, and that it is not only one path to go. We are all aiming for acceptance and to fit in to the society, but this story tells us that The author, who put himself as narrator, describes how he walks through the halls of the university and approaches the upper school and its playground, and he seems to get so emotionally attached that he cannot take another turn. When the boy gives away the grasshopper to a girl, who was one of many who wanted it, the girl shouted out Oh! It s not a grasshopper. It s a bell cricket. I read an analysis on this short story on a blog, called Generation , and I agree with his thoughts behind the symbolism of the transformation of the bell cricket from the boy to the girl, he states that it could be translated into the development of love and how, as rare as it is in the wild, one can captivate with a simple giving gesture. The narrator goes on to explain the rarity of such a find; even if you have the wit to look by yourself in a bush away from the other children, there are not many bell crickets in the world. I agree on the romantic messages behind this story, but I would also like to think that it describes, as I mentioned in the beginning of the analysis, life in general with the hunting of acceptation, that it is not only one way to go. It does not matter what color or decorations your lantern is, a multi colored is just as beautiful. [ 1 ]. Her stage was the kitchen of her cottage in the West of Ireland and her stories were about her friends and neighbors. She recreated their trials and triumphs and with her talent for mimicry accorded each a speaking part. Her one woman show held me spellbound. She commanded my tears and fits of laughter depending on the content of her story or dictated by a whim. It was she who made me stage struck years before I even saw a stage. The self deprecating wit prevalent throughout his works was reminiscent of the Irish sense of humor. I read every one of his books available in our school library and then moved on to the Boston Public Library where I discovered the story telling gifts of his brother I.J. Singer and his contemporary, Chaim Grade. Having exhausted the English language collection of Yiddish writers, I became determined to explore their works in their original form. Upon entering university, I decided to concentrate my studies on the language and literature of Yiddish. Although no Yiddish courses were offered at Boston University, the University Professor s Program allowed me to design my own course of study. I studied Yiddish and Hebrew at Hebrew College, the National Yiddish Book Center, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Harvard University. It was Yiddish and another dynamic teacher that pointed me again toward the theater. Last year in what was to be the most exciting and challenging course of my college career, I studied Yiddish theater with Professor Ruth Wisse. My deepest understanding of the Yiddish language and literature came from her class. She began her lecture by putting a play in context and placing its author in world literature. The second half of class was devoted to reading carefully prepared works aloud with each student playing a different role. She pushed and prodded us until we came up with an intelligent and original

Teachers and students who witness bullying can work together to reduce bullying in schools and classrooms. But there is also evidence that those who were bystanders were not willing to help the victims (Espelage, Green, Polanin, 2012). Students often do not support victims when there are multiple witnesses (Salmicalli, 2010). Students expect someone else to intervene or ignore the victim or may consider the bullying to be a joke ( Terasahjo Salmivalli, 2003). • 44. Jealousy, Love, And Death Shakespeare is known for his use of recurring themes, particularly those of betrayal, love, and death. These themes are present in Othello. However, the most dynamic of themes in this play is jealousy. White describes jealousy as a complex of thoughts, feelings, and actions which follow threats to self esteem and/or threats to the existence or quality of a relationship (qtd in UK essays par 1). Two types of jealousy are presented to the audience in Othello; the kind of jealousy that is fear of losing what one has, and the kind that is envious of what others have. Jealousy is a prevalent theme in Othello; it is rooted by love and hope, and it leads to betrayal and death. Because of the evil nature of jealousy, the play unfolds under the authority of Iago, who uses jealousy to drive the characters actions, and ultimately concludes in the downfall of a noble man (UK Essays par 1). The audience is presented with examples of both forms of jealousy as themes in Othello. The two themes of jealousy differ, but are also quite similar. The envious jealousy is portrayed by two of the main characters, Roderigo and Iago. Both men are willing to do anything it takes to get what they want. In the beginning of the play, Roderigo, a rich gentleman, and Iago, the villain, are introduced to the audience. Iago is envious of Cassio, who was chosen by Othello to be his lieutenant. • 45. Genoghhis Khan And The Legacy Of Genghis Khan Genghis Khan was undoubtedly one of the most vicious and brutal leaders in world history. However, the legacy of Khan is also one of cultural development, artistic achievement, an elegant way of life and an entire continent united under the Pax Mongolia. The famed leader and his successors created the largest empire ever to exist, spanning across the entire Asian continent. An empire as such could not have been created without strong leadership, stellar organizational skills and the most resilient army ever known. Genghis Khan may be well known for his brutality and destructive cavalry however, Khan did good for his own people and earned the Mongolians a reputation of glory. Genghis Khan was an emperor, who lead his people in such a way that was accepted in the tenth century. Back then war was a very reality, and if it involved massacres, then it was generally tolerated. However, many people forget that Khan s rampage left such a path of destruction that he irrevocably destroyed entire empires and populations in the interest of habitable environments. In more recent times, people have pointed out that Joseph Stalin was responsible for nearly twenty million deaths. This death toll would have made him more brutal than the Nazis, who held a death total of seventeen million people(White). Yet, Stalin cannot even compare to the brutality of the Mongols under the leadership of Khan. Genghis Khan was responsible for the deaths of roughly forty million people, and he was glad to ... • 46. Death Penalty Is Cruel And Unusual Punishment The legal executions first started in California when it was under the Practices Act in 1851. Then in February 14th 1872 it was put in the Penal Code. Capital punish in counties continued until an amendment by the legislature in 1891 said that it could only happen in the State Prisons picked by the court. The first state execution in California happens on March 3rd 1893 at San Quentin and the first one in Folsom was on December 13th 1895. In the 1937 s the legislature decided that instead of hanging people they were going to use lethal gas. This did not affect the people that were already sentenced to be hanged and the last hanging was in December 3rd 1937 at Folsom and the last hanging in Quentin was hold on May 1st 1942. Twenty five years after 1967 because of the United States Supreme Court choices there were no executions. In 1962 the Supreme Court thought that death penalty as cruel and unusual punishment. Because of this 107 people had their sentences changed to something that was not death. In November 1972 nine months after they had this choice the California electorate amended the state constitution overruled it. Then in 1973 the Supreme Court decided that the death penalty was unconstitutional. The San Andreas Fault and its role in Plate Tectonics and Earthquake Prediction The San Andreas Fault is one of the most widely studied faults in the world. Presently there are many differing hypothesis and models used to describe crustal movements and deformation within the Pacific and North American plate boundary. Historical earthquakes along this fault have proven to be rather large and devastating. • 49. The Realpolitik Foreign Policy Of Otto Von Bismarck The realpolitik foreign policy of Otto Von Bismarck contained many similarities as well as differences when compared and contrasted to the weltpolitik foreign policy of his successor Kaiser Wilhelm II. In 1890, Wilhelm II forced Bismarck s resignation and ascended the German throne, leading Germany into a militaristic path, failing to maintain Germany s allies, and plunging it into one of the most famous wars of history, World War I. Bismarck was originally an expansionist who aimed to make Prussia a powerful part of Germany, however, by 1870, he gave up his expansionist ideas and became content with the land that Germany already had power over. Bismarck s cautious foreign policy favored peace over war, creating treaties and maintaining Germany s land rather than expanding Germany by embarking in war. He sought to maintain good relations with France and Russia and kept France isolated. Furthermore, his policy secured peace within the five major powers of Europe by creating alliances. The Bismarckian system created allies between the other powers of Europe, secured Germany s land, and avoided conflicts with France and Russia. Although a few similarities can be found between Wilhelm and Bismarck s foreign policies, the policies had major differences in their approaches and styles of execution. Wilhelm s policy posed more of an aggressive approach and made Germany a threat to other countries as well as involved it into conflicts. He wanted to increase Germany s prestige as a ...
