Robert Gray Poem- Old House and Late Ferry
Poetic Language is used to Capture Human Experiences;
`In Robert Gray’s poems, he uses language to capture human experiences. In two of his
poems; old house and late ferry, gray has effectively captured human experiences by his varies poetic
languages and through insight and feeling. Throughout both texts late ferry and old house,
gray’s main message in the poems, with his critical analysis, is the destruction of nature by
mankind.
In old house, gray has captured the human experience of the process of death. He does this through
insight and he effectively conveys this with poetic language such as the use of metaphor. This is the
title itself ‘ old house’. The title doesn’t literally mean an old ... Show more

He uses this imagery in this poem to emphasis this dark place in which he now lives. Deep sea can be
a cold and scary place. This would capture a human experience because deep in the sea would be a
dark and lonely which is something a human can feel and relate to.
Gray expresses, in late ferry, a human experience captured by the language technique of symbolism,
this is of colour. In this text, gray uses the colour of yellow to express light, and sun, and to emphasis
the preciousness of the colour yellow, which also symbolises gold. In this text, gray conveys yellow as
the happy colour of the light, which is more natural and sweet to him, especially compared the fake
lights and colours of the city.
Poetry is definitely language used to capture a part of human experiences. This is evident in both late
ferry and old house, which were written by the poet Robert gray. He informs his audience of the
destruction of nature, and this is happens by mere humans. This is evident by the artificialness of the
city in late ferry, and of an old house actually being an institute in old house. He does this successfully
through various uses of poetic language

The ultimate goal of ethical theory is to achieve human dignity, peace, happiness, and well being. But
these goals are somewhat vague and can be interpreted differently in different situations under certain
circumstances. So to make the things less complex, we try to define a sphere of freedom in which
people can act and make decisions freely without interference from others. So natural rights defines
ethical theory as a set of actions that respects fundamental rights of others, including the rights to life,
liberty, and property. Natural rights can be categorized in two different

Nurse Ratched Women
There seems to be an uncanny similarity between all the men at ward. Most of the male patients are
tormented by a woman: Brombden s wife, billy s mom, nurse ratched, Mrs. Harding. Each of these
women are intent on dominating men by emasculating them. These female characters are demonized
as ball cutters because they do not adhere to traditional female roles and they emasculate the male
characters(Kesey 54). Take the poor Billy Bibbit a 31 year old is still very dependent on his mother,
Mother, I th th thirty one years old!...She laughed and twiddled with weed. Sweet heart, do I look like
the mother of a middle aged man? (Kesey 295) Ken Kesey was certain on trying to show the

Another victim of masculine accusation is Nurse ratched, the head of the ward. She is often described
as a piece of machinery. Chief Bromden says, But down inside of her she s tense as steel (28). The
word steel makes one think of hard, cold machines and Nurse Ratched operates as one. She must
maintain order at all times. Nurse Ratched is able to exercise so much power in the mental ward not
only because she does not fit with traditional gender norms but because she actively represses her
femininity (). Nurse Ratched falls into the category of Iron Maiden due to her powerful presence she is
blamed for the pitiful death of Billy Bibbit(). Chief s observations of her on the ward illustrate Nurse
Ratched s domineering presence, but the readers know more about the castration of husband and son
through Chief s mother.Chief views his father s sacrifice of his name is proof of the dominating nature
of his mother. Whom is blamed for her husband s alcolhalism and instutionlixation of her son. In
reality the fate of these men is the result of their own wrongdoing, neglect, and regret. Many critics
defend the book as a stance of power and presence, but truly it is a circle of blame on who is
responsible for another s

Imperfection In Gloria Naylor s Good Country People
All of the stories in this volume are great examples of southern writing. They are all thematically
linked by either community, flaws, or loss, which are all common themes in the deep south, especially
in the 1900 s. Those were times when woman we considered inferior to men, when loss was a huge
part of everyone s life because of the World Wars, but somehow community was the strongest bond
that everyone shared and it is what keeps the southern culture alive to this day. Community is a sense
of companionship with others bound together by common interests and goals. This idea is quite
important in the south because to them, their community was their family. In Gloria Naylor s Mama
Day, everyone knew everyone in the small island of Willow Springs. ... Show more content on

I Stand Here Ironing Symbolism
In I Stand Here Ironing , the author uses symbolism, imagery and diction to denote the mother s
candidness, and how she trusted her daughter s own ability. The author does this to make a point about
common mistakes that people make when raising kids. The symbolism in this story is the mother
ironing. Her ironing symbolizes what it is like to be a parent, I stand here ironing, and what you asked
me moves tormented back and forth with the iron, said the mother (Olsen 1). Much like the motion of
ironing, going back and forth repetitively, in life a parent sometimes has to just go through the motions
to get the job done. It is expected for a parent to always care what they re child is doing, and if what
they re doing is socially unacceptable then it is the parent s job to fix them. The mother is candid
because she tells the person she is on the phone with there is nothing she can do about the way her
daughter is behaving: You think because I am her mother I have a key, or that in some way you could
use me as a key, she said (Olsen 8). She understands that her daughter is standoffish because that s we
way she s always been. Therefore, her trying to step in and help wouldn t help the situation at all. I can

It s easy to realize that the mother doesn t know or understand her daughter very well because the only
time she can describe her is when she is a baby. She says, She was a beautiful baby, and then
continues to give attributes of her daughter in past tense because she s not sure that they still apply to
her now, She loved motion, loved light, loved color and music and textures (Olsen 35). The mother
has comfort in knowing these few things about Emily because she knows that her daughter will still

The Second Shift By Arlie Russell Hochschild
The Second Shift by Arlie Russell Hochschild sheds light on the fact that America is stuck in a
perpetual loop, unable to change its societal gender expectations. Substantial progress has been made
when it comes to women in the workplace, but that same progress is lacking when it comes to a
woman s work within the home. When looking at employed women the term second shift can be
brought to the forefront. The expression second shift refers to the tasks done around the house after the
initial work hours are through. Hochschild critiques how the American career system treats the second
shift ; she makes it clear that the working American society has yet to take the additional shift into
consideration due to the already implemented ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Imagery Pattern of Clouds in the Portrait of an Artist by...
The Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce is widely recognized by New Critics as one
of the greatest novels of its age for its aesthetic artistry. In the Portrait, a powerful autobiographical
novel of bildungsroman, commonly known as a coming of age story, that follows the life of Irish
protagonist Stephen Dedalus, Joyce portraits his momentous transition to adulthood as a passage of
psychological struggle towards his ultimate philosophical awakening and his spiritual rebirth as an
artist. Most visibly in Chapter Four of the novel, Stephen Dedalus, after the denial of his own
priesthood, goes on to seek his artistic personality through his secluded journey amongst a myriad of
natural elements. Dramatizing the Stephen s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He heard a confused music within him as of memories and names which he was almost conscious of
but could not capture even for an instant; then the music seemed to recede, to recede, to recede, and
from each receding trail of nebulous music there fell always one longdrawn calling note, piercing like
a star the dusk of silence. Again! Again! Again! A voice from beyond the world was calling. (107)
Here, Stephen instantly displays a strong intimacy with the wafting clouds as they draw his attention
away from the pressing commandments posed by the Christian decree. Personifying the clouds as the
wanderers with spirits as his companions, Stephen takes refuge amongst the aimless cloud to drift
across the boundless sky. Dappled and seaborne, Stephen admits himself not so purified and free of
desires as devoted Christian brothers, as well as his earthly origin that he is inevitably composed of.
Consequently, Stephen finds imagination to be his key towards his own enlightenment; just like the
capricious clouds, Stephen follows his imaginations and brings the perpetual beauty out of the
sluggish matter of the earth to its sublimity across the clear sky (108). Joyce also portraits clouds as
the mild framers of the sunlight, an indirect contrast with the conventional square framed windows at
the church that Stephen

With the exception of the spiritual hybridization experienced by the Tulsi, there is the agreement made

the Hindu Spiritualism creole communities. Above all, the Tulsi considers the shabby European

Hanuman House is the home of the Tutsi group which symbolises the hybrid culture as a result of
colonization. Even though the house enfolds one of the ancient Hindu cultures, their culture is
hybridized by the colonizers through their western lifestyle, faith, language and education. The
western aligned culture of Trinidad destroys the Hindu traditional norms and beliefs. This clash
between the Hindu traditional custom and the western ideology heads to a hybridized culture.
The main character consequently advances from house to house as a victim of hybridization, in search
of his true identity, his own self. This demonstrates not only his agitation and without a home, his
discontent and alienation with surroundings, his feeling of being disconnected and being ditched off
the universe. A House for Mr. Biswas deals with the everlasting search for a house as home as a place

dense landscape of marshes and hedgerows. By the end of August, 1944 they reached the Seine River,
Paris was liberated and the Germans were removed from north western France which effectively

Loss Of Innocence In The Catcher In The Rye
The knowledge that makes us cherish innocence makes innocence unattainable. (Irving Howe Quote)
The classic novel, The Catcher in the Rye, demonstrates this loss of innocence through a young boy s
corruption of a poem by Robert Burns. The poem is titled Coming Thro the Rye but the young boy
misinterpreted one of the lines. Instead of saying If a body meet a body, coming through the rye, the
line from the original poem, he sang If a body catch a body, coming through the rye. (Salinger 129)
This mistake becomes a symbol for the loss of innocence that occurs when one grows up and
continues to act as a metaphor for Holden s desire to protect all children from that fate. Both the song
Comin Thro the Rye, and the boy s alteration of it, serve to accentuate the theme of loss of innocence
throughout the novel. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The National Football League And Its Effect On Society
The National Football League was created in September, 1920 and has since influenced America not
only economically but personally as the sport s dangers are slowly unmasked. The National Football
League has been covering up the corruption that has been going on for many decades and as people
begin to dig, many hidden truths are beginning to be uncovered. When people think about the NFL,
they are reminded of the sport that many have loved so much but little does our society realize the
major economic effects that the NFL has on America. Not all of us realize how much of our tax dollars
go towards new football stadiums, the massive parking lots used for games, and the football players
themselves. The National Football League claims to be nonprofit, yet it is clear that it is far from that.
In addition to the economic effects, it also has a more personal impact on our lives as more research is
showing the health hazards of playing football. The multiple head traumas that football players get
leads to chronic conditions such as CTE, a newer diagnosis, which causes many players to experience
symptoms such as brain deterioration, suicidal thoughts and ultimately death. Many parents put their
kids in a football league starting at a very young age but are unaware of the dangers they are exposing
their children to.There have been several cases of sudden deaths from young players including Andre
Jackson, a football player from Ohio High School who died suddenly two days after

Alcohol Vs Alcohol Research Paper
What is More Dangerous, Marijuana or Alcohol?
In recent times, marijuana has slowly become less and less of a taboo subject. The gradual legalization
has made marijuana a hot topic, both for its recreational uses and medicinal properties. The biggest
questions that remain are, is it dangerous and is it more dangerous than alcohol? Given the length of
time that alcohol has been legal most people would assume that it is the safer option, but is that true?
Risk from Alcohol
While alcohol may be readily available to anyone over the age of 21, it still comes with risk both to
your judgment and health. According to the CDC, excessive alcohol consumption leads to around
88,000 deaths annually. Alcohol consumption comes with both long term and short term effects on a
person, such as:
Impairment of judgment leading to injuries from motor vehicle accidents, drowning, falls and physical
instability.
People who are under the influence of alcohol may become violent, which has led to murder, assault
and sexual assault.

Real Estate Investing Benefits
Real estate investing is something that can be incredibly beneficial to those who can afford to invest.
Real estate investing requires skill and effort to become as successful as physically possible. Some
will make a lot of money, while others will fail to break even on their homes. Even though this is a
risky business venture to get into, it does have a large amount of benefits and rewards. Knowing the
multiple benefits may help you to lean toward starting real estate investing.
Profit
The obvious benefit that comes from real estate investing comes from the money that can be made.
Those who have managed to buy a home for a small amount, and sell it for a large amount see the
largest profit. People will fix houses, and add to houses simply to get as much profit as possible out of
the market. This benefit is generally unmatched by many other investments; you can make a lot of
money by simply investing in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If you love the hunt, you will love looking for the perfect home. If you enjoy the work that comes with
fixing a home, you will love the project. If you enjoy designing a room or house, or like adding onto
and upgrading a home, you will enjoy the work. Real estate investing is a lot of work, but can be great
for those who actually like the work that is involved. While some do it for the money, others do it for
more reasons, such as this.
While it is a great investment to start investing in real estate, it can also be a risky and dangerous one.
The only way to make sure that you can reap all of the benefits listed above is to make sure that you
consult a professional. Talking to someone who has gone through real estate investing, and been
successful at it, is the only real person who can help you to match that success. By talking to a coach
who knows what they are doing, you can be sure that you are going about the entire process with the
right steps in

An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge Analysis
I m really enjoying our assigned readings so far in class. My favorite so far has been An Occurrence at
Owl Creek Bridge by Bierce. I was not expecting the ending to this short story at all, it caught me off
guard. I honestly did believe that Peyton Farquhar, the main character of the story, managed to
escaped his hanging by swimming away from the scene. What I did find sort of hard to believe was
how much Peyton was able to imagine right before his death. What I mean by this is how he was able
to imagine a whole escape plan that led him running all the way home to his wife, all while he was in
the process of getting hanged. The whole story was about five pages long but it had a great amount of
detail describing the events. I especially enjoyed this particular reading because I was able to picture
every single moment as I kept reading along. I like stories where I know exactly what is going on and
I m able to picture everything in my head and just flow like a movie would. This was one of those
stories, especially after watching a Twilight Zone episode last class about this ... Show more content

Again, I wasn t expecting that ending at all. I really sympathize with Mathilde and her husband
because they really didn t deserve to work that hard for just a necklace. Especially the husband, all he
really wanted to do was buy a gun so that he can go hunting in the summer. I wouldn t necessarily say
that Mathilde deserves those hard working 10 years she lost to repay the lost necklace mainly because
it has always been in Mathilde s nature to want the best and dreams of other luxuries. I do, however,
blame her for the misfortune she brought upon her and her husband when she lost the fake necklace. If
she wasn t so demanding of things and would have settled with simply the dress her husband bought
for her in exchange of his gun dream, then for sure their lives would probably have been a whole lot

The Power Of Power In My Last Duchess By Robert Browning
In several countries tyrants abuse their power for their own benefit. Many people must obey these
cruel rulers or be punished if they disobey. People must live in fear because of these tyrants, who use
their power for their own satisfaction. In My Last Duchess the Duke of Ferrara uses his power to
control his subjects, and kills his wife because of the way she acts around other men. From beginning
to end My Last Duchess by Robert Browning displays the corrupt power of the domestic tyrant, his
arrogance, jealousy, and the ruthlessness.
To begin, the Duke is displayed to be a corrupt leader. His tyrannical ways and ideas of solving
problems in his life are preposterous. The Duke is enraged that his wife shows flirtatious expressions
to other men that show kindness towards her. The Duchess is killed because the Duke becomes
frustrated with her actions This grew; I gave commands; Then all smiles stopped together (Browning
line 45 46). This portrays the Duke s tyrannical ways, he demands her to stop, but she ignores him,
therefore the Duke decides to kill his wife. According to Robert Reese, The Duchess smiles to the
other men aroused an anger in the Duke so powerful that he gave commands to have her killed . The
Duke of Ferrara considers himself superior to others and above laws and morality. He feels he can do
anything he desires without serving any sort of punishment. The Duke does indeed have an enormous
amount of power, and he uses all that power to be abusive to

Essay On The Three Kingdoms
One of the most well know historical periods of Ancient China is the era of the Three Kingdoms,
which records the period to some of the most well known historical figures, heroes, and their complex
yet intriguing relationships. The Three Kingdoms was a period of unrest, and battles which initiated in
220AD, when Wei replaced the Eastern Han Dynasty, and lasted until the reunification of lands in
280AD. Towards the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the emperor was losing power and influence,
which led to the inability for Eastern Han to unite the whole land. At the same time, the country was in

The complex relations during the Three Kingdoms supressed the dominating country Wei from easily

chaos and uprising as feudal lords fought each other for territories. The court ministers of late Eastern

Analysis Of Ask Me If I Care And Safari Essay
Women have a few common tropes in literature. Seen as submissive to men, and sexualized because of
it, women are presented as less than. While this has been strayed from a little bit in modern literature
with the engagement of queer writers, it is still very much the normal view of women, due to a society
in which the view on women is that of being less than. The short stories Ask Me if I Care and Safari
by Jennifer Egan both perpetuate this idea of women as submissive. Egan presents female characters
who only exist in the context of men, thus leaving them to be seen as inferior to the men. These tropes
of women in literature, and Egan s use of them, fit into the larger conversation: there is a degradation
of women in literature due to common conceptions of women in society.
Egan presents multiple female characters in Ask Me if I Care . The short story touches on a group of
friends, and in this group are the two characters of Rhea and Jocelyn both female. While they may
seem to be presented differently, Rhea as a not interested in being sexualized character and Jocelyn as
a sexualizes herself character, both ultimately play into the trope of submissive and degraded women.
Rhea, from the beginning, is portrayed as needing men: Still, if it s Bennie and me I hope for the back,
so that I can push against his shoulder in the cold, and hold him for a second when we hit a bump
(Egan, Ask Me ). While this may seem innocuous, it is the first introduction to Rhea. The very

Marshmallow Experiment
The marshmallow Experiment is a concept based on the famous saying patience is a virtue. In my
opinion I can compare their choice of snack they chose to wait for to something I might really treasure
or want at this point in my life. This experiment predicts that the children who decided they could wait
longer to get two marshmallows instead of just one, are proven to be by far more successful in their
futures.
This study shows that people want instant gratification often. People tend to choose the fast route
rather than being patient and waiting for something better. A great example of this statement to me is
one of my past experiences. As a senior in high school the thing I saw most important was getting my
first car. I soon got a job saved ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I believe that this desire for a car was important for me to gain more freedom from being home. Well
sure enough the time came where I had enough money to fulfill my desires. And here is where my
argument stands, had I waited and saved just a couple more checks I could have got myself something
very reliable and maybe even faster or more luxurious. As you can guess my precious 2001 mustang
broke down in a matter of months. I was carless and anxious to buy another car.
Same rule applies for example when a tobacco addict isn t able to quit smoking. The main notion of
this issue, In my opinion is a lack of self control. The children in the video and experiment are also
pulling their hair and trying their hardest to fight the urge of going and grabbing the marshmallow or
snack. This to me shows that the feeling had different types of emotions going on inside their heads
for them to react the way they were. And this experiment to me isn t anything big, I mean if someone
really wants something, they will do whatever is in their power to try and pursue that goal. As a

The Core Beliefs Of The Anglo-Saxons In Beowulf
The core beliefs and the things the anglo saxons saw as important are clear throughout the story of
beowulf. The anglo saxons believed in strong loyalty to each other and to the leader. The anglo saxons
also had a pagan background and saw warriors as high members of society. All these beliefs and core
values are exhibited in beowulf.
Beowulf has a strong anglo saxon values sprinkled through it including a strong sense of loyalty. This
sense of loyalty shows up time and time again within beowulf. One of the most notable times loyalty
is brought up in beowulf is in The Last Battle. Wiglaf is the character used to show loyalty. Beowulf is
in a battle and his soldiers leave out of fear, Wiglaf decides that the most loyal and honorable thing to
do is go help his king fight. Even though his chances of survival are low, Wiglaf goes back to help his
king. This sense of loyalty that would mean loyalty even until death shows how strongly the anglo

the christian versus pagan conflict in the anglo saxon culture. The christians or good guys try to fight

Persuasive Essay On Breast Feeding
Imagine this, you re a mother or a father and your child is crying. No, the child is screaming. He or
she is hungry. For the first 6 months it s crucial for a newborn to be breastfed. It s only natural to feed
your child the food they need to grow and develop. So of course you re going to give them the food
they re crying for. People will argue you can pump or use formula, except pumped milk only stays
good for so long, and formula costs money and isn t always a mother s first choice. Some will use
formula for their newborn while away and have a babysitter, except breastfeeding helps them bond
with their parent and is usually prefered among women.

A few men argue that a women showing off cleavage is hot while breastfeeding is not, and then
continue by saying that is why women shouldn t publicly breastfeed. I don t pee in public, so why
should a woman breastfeed? Is the wrong question to ask if you want to make breastfeeding seem

A Primate s Memoir, By American Biologist
(1)The book, A Primate s Memoir, by American biologist, Robert Sapolsky is divided into four parts.
These four parts detail the stages of both his research of the behavior of a troop of African baboons
and his unintentional research of human behavior as to himself through his encounters and
experiences as a young researcher in Kenya, Africa for the first time. Sapolsky names the four parts of
his book to describe the four stages of a baboon s growth. Ultimately, these parts also reflect Sapolsky
s personal growth and transformation as he journeys through Africa and studies the baboon troop.
Since, at the outset of his research, the baboons he will study seem to be around this age, Part 1 is
labeled The Adolescent Years . As he is both a rather naïve and untested young man as well as a new
researcher on his first trip to Kenya, these are also adolescent years for Sapolsky. In his youthful
inexperience and naivete, he manages to get kidnapped and become broke, homeless, and scammed
out of money by people falsely claiming they were in need. As with the baboons, for Sapolsky,
adolescence is a rough journey but lessons learned the hard way are an effective means of instilling an
understanding that one s ability to survive depends on an ability to comprehend how one s
environment operates and must be navigated. In the end, lessons learned in adolescence help provide
the guidelines and skills for coping with future challenges that both primates and their descendants are

The United States V. Virginia Case Study
When Virginia Military Institute (VMI) was founded in 1839, it was established as a male only
institute. At this time and even up to the mid 1970 s, most colleges and institutes were single sexed
schools. They, at that time, only wanted to teach and build young men to transform the world; not
women. The state arguably stated that women would not be able to hand the level of training involved
in going to VMI (Justia). However, once most other colleges and institutions opened admissions, VMI
still stood their ground as a male only institution. The question they then faced was whether or not
their tradition to be male only was constitutional?
The case of VMI went to the district courts, and was deemed to be a tradition and that this tradition
was accepted. However, the Fourth Circuit rejected the decision. They found the policy in which they
made admission decisions unconstitutional. In response Virginia tried coming up with a women only
institution that would equal up to VMI. They introduced Virginia Women s Institute for Leadership
(VMIL) to the Fourth Circuit. Even though both programs did not require the same level of skill, the
Fourth Circuit accepted that the two institutions were equivalent to each other because they offered

The Theory Of Utilitarianism And Rule Utilitarianism
Have you eaten breakfast this morning? Put on clean clothes? Did you have a bed to sleep in at the
end of your day? For millions of less fortunate around the world, the answer to those questions is no.
Knowing this is true, can you continue to go about your day and claim to be a moral and ethical
person? In order to obtain the greatest pleasure for the greatest number of people, it is clear that you in
order to uphold your moral duty; you must contribute to those experiencing poverty.
When applying this concept to the consequentialist theory of utilitarianism, it is important to first
examine the difference between act utilitarianism and rule utilitarianism. As Mosser explains, act
utilitarianism tells us that we must question what single act would generate the greatest good.
Whereas, rule utilitarianism evaluates the actions themselves and determines what would produce an
outcome that institutes the greatest good. (2013 sec. 6.1) From an act utilitarian standpoint, say you
had a hundred dollars to spend lavishly. If you purchased the designer shirt you have been looking at
for weeks, you would definitely be happy, you would make the person selling the shirt happy, and you
would make the company making the shirt happy. Yet, if you were to give the same hundred dollars to
charity and it fed a family for a week, gave them new clothing, the medicine they needed, and better

He uses this imagery in this poem to emphasis this dark place in which he now lives. Deep sea can be a cold and scary place. This would capture a human experience because deep in the sea would be a dark and lonely which is something a human can feel and relate to. Gray expresses, in late ferry, a human experience captured by the language technique of symbolism, this is of colour. In this text, gray uses the colour of yellow to express light, and sun, and to emphasis the preciousness of the colour yellow, which also symbolises gold. In this text, gray conveys yellow as the happy colour of the light, which is more natural and sweet to him, especially compared the fake lights and colours of the city. Poetry is definitely language used to capture a part of human experiences. This is evident in both late ferry and old house, which were written by the poet Robert gray. He informs his audience of the destruction of nature, and this is happens by mere humans. This is evident by the artificialness of the city in late ferry, and of an old house actually being an institute in old house. He does this successfully through various uses of poetic language ... • 5. Nurse Ratched Women There seems to be an uncanny similarity between all the men at ward. Most of the male patients are tormented by a woman: Brombden s wife, billy s mom, nurse ratched, Mrs. Harding. Each of these women are intent on dominating men by emasculating them. These female characters are demonized as ball cutters because they do not adhere to traditional female roles and they emasculate the male characters(Kesey 54). Her ironing symbolizes what it is like to be a parent, I stand here ironing, and what you asked me moves tormented back and forth with the iron, said the mother (Olsen 1). Much like the motion of ironing, going back and forth repetitively, in life a parent sometimes has to just go through the motions to get the job done. It is expected for a parent to always care what they re child is doing, and if what they re doing is socially unacceptable then it is the parent s job to fix them. The mother is candid because she tells the person she is on the phone with there is nothing she can do about the way her daughter is behaving: You think because I am her mother I have a key, or that in some way you could use me as a key, she said (Olsen 8). When looking at employed women the term second shift can be brought to the forefront. The expression second shift refers to the tasks done around the house after the initial work hours are through. The Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce is widely recognized by New Critics as one of the greatest novels of its age for its aesthetic artistry. In the Portrait, a powerful autobiographical novel of bildungsroman, commonly known as a coming of age story, that follows the life of Irish protagonist Stephen Dedalus, Joyce portraits his momentous transition to adulthood as a passage of psychological struggle towards his ultimate philosophical awakening and his spiritual rebirth as an artist. Again! Again! Again! A voice from beyond the world was calling. (107) Here, Stephen instantly displays a strong intimacy with the wafting clouds as they draw his attention away from the pressing commandments posed by the Christian decree. Personifying the clouds as the wanderers with spirits as his companions, Stephen takes refuge amongst the aimless cloud to drift across the boundless sky. Dappled and seaborne, Stephen admits himself not so purified and free of desires as devoted Christian brothers, as well as his earthly origin that he is inevitably composed of. Consequently, Stephen finds imagination to be his key towards his own enlightenment; just like the capricious clouds, Stephen follows his imaginations and brings the perpetual beauty out of the sluggish matter of the earth to its sublimity across the clear sky (108). (Irving Howe Quote) The classic novel, The Catcher in the Rye, demonstrates this loss of innocence through a young boy s corruption of a poem by Robert Burns. The poem is titled Coming Thro the Rye but the young boy misinterpreted one of the lines. Instead of saying If a body meet a body, coming through the rye, the line from the original poem, he sang If a body catch a body, coming through the rye. (Salinger 129) This mistake becomes a symbol for the loss of innocence that occurs when one grows up and continues to act as a metaphor for Holden s desire to protect all children from that fate. • 27. Analysis Of Ask Me If I Care And Safari Essay Women have a few common tropes in literature. Seen as submissive to men, and sexualized because of it, women are presented as less than. While this has been strayed from a little bit in modern literature with the engagement of queer writers, it is still very much the normal view of women, due to a society in which the view on women is that of being less than. The short stories Ask Me if I Care and Safari by Jennifer Egan both perpetuate this idea of women as submissive. Egan presents female characters who only exist in the context of men, thus leaving them to be seen as inferior to the men. These tropes of women in literature, and Egan s use of them, fit into the larger conversation: there is a degradation of women in literature due to common conceptions of women in society. Egan presents multiple female characters in Ask Me if I Care . The short story touches on a group of friends, and in this group are the two characters of Rhea and Jocelyn both female. While they may seem to be presented differently, Rhea as a not interested in being sexualized character and Jocelyn as a sexualizes herself character, both ultimately play into the trope of submissive and degraded women. Rhea, from the beginning, is portrayed as needing men: Still, if it s Bennie and me I hope for the back, so that I can push against his shoulder in the cold, and hold him for a second when we hit a bump (Egan, Ask Me ). While this may seem innocuous, it is the first introduction to Rhea. The very ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In my opinion I can compare their choice of snack they chose to wait for to something I might really treasure or want at this point in my life. This experiment predicts that the children who decided they could wait longer to get two marshmallows instead of just one, are proven to be by far more successful in their futures. This study shows that people want instant gratification often. People tend to choose the fast route rather than being patient and waiting for something better. A great example of this statement to me is one of my past experiences. As a senior in high school the thing I saw most important was getting my first car. I soon got a job saved ... As you can guess my precious 2001 mustang broke down in a matter of months. I was carless and anxious to buy another car. Same rule applies for example when a tobacco addict isn t able to quit smoking. The main notion of this issue, In my opinion is a lack of self control. The children in the video and experiment are also pulling their hair and trying their hardest to fight the urge of going and grabbing the marshmallow or snack. This to me shows that the feeling had different types of emotions going on inside their heads for them to react the way they were. And this experiment to me isn t anything big, I mean if someone really wants something, they will do whatever is in their power to try and pursue that goal. For the first 6 months it s crucial for a newborn to be breastfed. It s only natural to feed your child the food they need to grow and develop. These four parts detail the stages of both his research of the behavior of a troop of African baboons and his unintentional research of human behavior as to himself through his encounters and experiences as a young researcher in Kenya, Africa for the first time. Sapolsky names the four parts of his book to describe the four stages of a baboon s growth. Ultimately, these parts also reflect Sapolsky s personal growth and transformation as he journeys through Africa and studies the baboon troop. Since, at the outset of his research, the baboons he will study seem to be around this age, Part 1 is labeled The Adolescent Years . As he is both a rather naïve and untested young man as well as a new researcher on his first trip to Kenya, these are also adolescent years for Sapolsky. In his youthful inexperience and naivete, he manages to get kidnapped and become broke, homeless, and scammed out of money by people falsely claiming they were in need. As with the baboons, for Sapolsky, adolescence is a rough journey but lessons learned the hard way are an effective means of instilling an understanding that one s ability to survive depends on an ability to comprehend how one s environment operates and must be navigated. In the end, lessons learned in adolescence help provide the guidelines and skills for coping with future challenges that both primates and their descendants are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. The United States V. Virginia Case Study When Virginia Military Institute (VMI) was founded in 1839, it was established as a male only institute. At this time and even up to the mid 1970 s, most colleges and institutes were single sexed schools. They, at that time, only wanted to teach and build young men to transform the world; not women. The state arguably stated that women would not be able to hand the level of training involved in going to VMI (Justia). However, once most other colleges and institutions opened admissions, VMI still stood their ground as a male only institution. The question they then faced was whether or not their tradition to be male only was constitutional? The case of VMI went to the district courts, and was deemed to be a tradition and that this tradition was accepted. However, the Fourth Circuit rejected the decision. They found the policy in which they made admission decisions unconstitutional. In response Virginia tried coming up with a women only institution that would equal up to VMI. They introduced Virginia Women s Institute for Leadership (VMIL) to the Fourth Circuit. • 38. The Theory Of Utilitarianism And Rule Utilitarianism Have you eaten breakfast this morning? Put on clean clothes? Did you have a bed to sleep in at the end of your day? For millions of less fortunate around the world, the answer to those questions is no. Knowing this is true, can you continue to go about your day and claim to be a moral and ethical person? In order to obtain the greatest pleasure for the greatest number of people, it is clear that you in order to uphold your moral duty; you must contribute to those experiencing poverty. When applying this concept to the consequentialist theory of utilitarianism, it is important to first examine the difference between act utilitarianism and rule utilitarianism. As Mosser explains, act utilitarianism tells us that we must question what single act would generate the greatest good. Whereas, rule utilitarianism evaluates the actions themselves and determines what would produce an outcome that institutes the greatest good. (2013 sec. 6.1) From an act utilitarian standpoint, say you had a hundred dollars to spend lavishly. If you purchased the designer shirt you have been looking at for weeks, you would definitely be happy, you would make the person selling the shirt happy, and you would make the company making the shirt happy. Yet, if you were to give the same hundred dollars to charity and it fed a family for a week, gave them new clothing, the medicine they needed, and better shelter this action would outweigh your pleasure from the shirt you purchased.
