Analyzing Hilda Doolittle s Poem Helen
HELENNNNNN Helen of Troy is a prominent character in Greek mythology who is known for her
beauty which caused the Trojan War. She is often viewed as a one dimensional character who
singularly represents beauty. However, in Hilda Doolittle s poem entitled Helen , she uses an analysis
of the image of Helen to support feminism. Her poem, written with three stanzas, describes a change
in Helen s personal state in order to emphasize the negative effects of assuming that beauty indicates
an absence of personality. Doolittle begins by describing, in simple terms, Greece s unanimous hate
towards the character Helen, whose beauty tears apart Greece. By describing Helen as still and white,
Doolittle conveys strong imagery of a conspicuous lack of motion. All Greece hates / the still eyes in
the white face... where she stands... (H.D. 2 4). Helen, who is described as white and standing, appears
very statuesque and immobile to readers. Interestingly, her eyes are said to have a lustre as of olives .

6). Here the verb has changed noticeably from hates to reviles , indicating the Greeks increased
intensity of negative emotions towards Helen. Furthermore, Greece reacts with disgust to Helen s
smile, creating the sense that Greece wants to deny Helen all movement, feelings, and life. The Greeks
are said to hate her even more when she remembers past enchantments / and past ills (H.D. 10 11).
Helen is likely remembering Troy, where her actions destroyed Greece. Calling the Trojan War a past
ill for Helen is a direct contrast to the unsaid ills the Greeks suffered in the same war, which were
much greater, at least in terms of life and death. Greece seems to think that whenever Helen does
anything, she causes trouble or reminds people of the trouble she has caused. In fact, this stanza
conveys the sense that Greece hate when Helen does anything but stand

The Characteristics Of Baroque Style
Essay 1: Dazzle the Faithful To understand the characteristics of Baroque style is to truly understand
artistic measures of the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. Baroque, a single word describing an entire
period of art, can be broken down into more than one actual form of art. The new European age
birthed this developing style of architecture, coming from ideas on religion and politics. Set apart in
three different countries, visitors of St. Peter s Basilica, Versailles, and Hampton Court Palace, engulf
themselves in historic Baroque styles and beauty. The international style was reinterpreted in different
regions so that three distinct manifestations of the style emerged (Matthews 392). The florid, classical,
and restrained baroque design of the three different buildings gives us a historic lesson on the
reasoning behind its purpose. First, we visit St. Peter s Basilica and Adjoining Piazza in Rome. The
beautiful structure still used today, initially was brought to fruition by Donato Bramante as a temple
shaped like a Greek cross. Quickly Pope Paul V rejected the design, deeming the Greek cross to be
pagan like. He commissioned Carlo Maderno to make some changes to the floor plan, adjusting the
look into a Latin cross. The florid baroque styles are seen entering the Apse and Alter, which
symbolized the power and richness of the church (392). The sculptures throughout, specifically in the
Apse, are dramatic and real, shunning classical styles. Therefore, St.

Majestic Dinosaurs
The title of the article I chose is Paleontologists probe the majestic reptiles origin and rise writen by
Alenxandra Witze. This article talks about paleontologists excavating ancient fossils, giving them
more information about the common ancestor of dinosaurs, and how they came to rule the earth for
millions of years. The author gives us an example of what the ancestor of dinosaurs may have looked
like, by telling us that it probably looked something like a chicken . Just as there was a mass extinction
that wiped out most dinosaurs, there was a mass extinction millions years before, that gave the
dinosaurs an opportunity to rise and evolve. 252 millions years ago, between the Permian and Triassic
periods a mass extinction wiped out most life on Earth. This gave the opportunity for new groups to ...

The oldest piece of evidence showing that the first dinosaurs showed up during the Triassic time
period, are the fossil footprints found that date back 250 million years, although not everyone is
convinced that the footprints are definite evidence. Scientists are not sure how to classify some of the
earliest species found between the three main branches of the dinosaur family tree: Theropods( two
legged meat eaters), Sauropodomorphs(four legged, long neck plant eaters), and Ornithiscians ( bird
hipped dinosaurs). Although these fossils help paleontologists discover new information, new findings
also come from close relatives of dinosaurs, just like a long talk with an estranged cousin can help fill

Zionism and Non Zionists Essays
Zionism declares that the Jews are more than a purely religious body, they are not only a race but also
a nation (Berkowitz 376). Theodor Herzl, the father of political Zionism, states, We are a people one
people. Both Herzl and Berkowitz have interesting key points about a Jewish State, the Jewish religion
in general, and how to solve current issues in the religion. A State is formed by a social contract and is
still being created today. Rousseau states, The conditions of this contract are so precisely defined by
the nature of the agreement that the slightest alterations would make them null and void. The
consequence is that, even where they are not expressly stated, they are everywhere identical, and
everywhere tacitly accepted and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This fact proves that all Jews should and will stand together to solve and work out the problems such
as poor treatment and portrayal. Herzl emphasizes, It is true that the Jewish State is conceived as a
peculiarly modern structure on unspecified territory. But a State is formed, not by pieces of land, but
rather by a number of men united under sovereign rule. For example, the portrayal of Jews from a non
Zionist is much different from Zionists. It is an egregious and fatal error of the Zionists that they
accept the misery of Israel as permanent, his wretchedness as hopeless (Berkowitz 372). Although
forming a State or declaring an important religion can be difficult, there are many other risks such as,
land disputes, current communities moving to a new land, views of merging with other countries, past
and future suffering, and the most important, the emphasis on religion or nation. The first step to
becoming a respected religious State is forming a society of Jews to perform scientific and political
tasks. Second, Christians and current citizens of the State would be forced to move and find new land,
like in times of war or destroyed land. Herzl does point out that if the Jewish State had help from the
Christians it would become a peaceable voluntary departure of colonists. Third, the Jews have
attempted to merge many places in the social life of other countries and to prefer faith of

Hydrogen as an Option for Fuel
With gas prices escalating and fossil fuels becoming limited, scientists have been researching an
alternative fuel source that will be more abundant and cost efficient. Issues with our current fuel
source include the pollution that is emitted in our air and water sources and the fact that fossil fuels are
becoming scarce. One alternative to gasoline is the use of hydrogen as a fuel source. With hydrogen as
a fuel source pollution will be in decline, it has become increasingly more abundant than fossil fuels
through extracting hydrogen from various sources, and is domestically produced. There are many pros
to using hydrogen as an alternative fuel source; namely, its abundance, its low pollution, and the fact
that it is being researched and extracted domestically. Hydrogen is one of the most abundant elements
on earth and can be found in water, hydrocarbons and other organic matter. Because of hydrogen
being so abundant scientists are able to extract it from a variety of sources, therefore, the problem with
hydrogen as a fuel source is how to exactly make hydrogen an efficient fuel source. Currently
hydrogen is extracted from natural gas, but this releases the greenhouse gas CO2 and uses up a limited
resource. This does not relieve our current issues with using up fossil fuels, just displaces them.
Recent research has suggested a means of how to resolve both of these problems. Zhang, a research
scientist from Virginia Tech, and his team have altered an enzyme that can

My Experience At The Dining Lab At Monroe College
Based on the information that is required for this paper, I would be writing about my Front of the
House experience here at The Dining Lab at Monroe College. The three challenges that I would be
writing about would be about option number 1, working within the dining room environment. With
that being said, the three challenger that I choose to write about when it comes to the Front of the
House Operations are:
1. Steps of Service
2. Team work or Lack thereof
3. Mentally
According to Hayes (2013), Steps of Service is the order of tasks a Server needs to follow and
accomplish to deliver the Dining Experience .
Examples of Standards of Service (Hayes, HP225 Dining Room Management Syllabus, 2013):
1) Serve from the left
2) Clear from the right
3) All drinks are served from the right side with the right hand
4) All drinks are carried to and from the table on a tray
5) The use of seat numbers
6) The coffee cup is served from the right, on the right, with the handle at a 67.5 degree angle from the
12 o clock position of the guest. (Yes, details within the standards can get this specific)
Examples of Steps of Service (Hayes, HGCC Dining Room Steps of Service, 2009) :
1. Member/ Guest is seated
2. Water Delivery  Within 30 Seconds
3. Server Greets Member(s) and their Guest (s) within 30 Seconds

The Media s Impact On Public Opinion
The media has always had a powerful impact on public opinion in Britain. With several different types
and means of communication, such as TV, newspapers, social networking and radio, it is difficult for
the public to not be even slightly impacted by the opinion of thousands that surrounds them every day.
However, with newspapers spinning stories to promote the party they favour (such as the Daily Mail
in favour of Conservatives or the Mirror in favour of Labour ) or to disparage the opposition, is it clear
there is any obvious influence from the media towards the public in relation to reporting on British
Politics?
Since January 2001, the total circulation of the UK s ten major national newspapers has declined . It
could be said that the press choose to slander politicians to gain attention from the public to push
sales, rather than inform the public on the real political issues at hand. For example, women s
magazines discuss political issues such as abortion and the tampon tax , rather than commercial
newspapers that publish stories such as scrutinizing politician Jeremy Corbyn for his subtle head nod
at the remembrance Sunday cenotaph. In a declining market for their product, newspaper titles battle
against each other for audiences and advertising revenue in their respective market segments, while
the press as a whole is engaged in competition with other media sectors, such as the news via the
internet, which makes it easier for the public to instantly engage with

The Effect Of Heat Engines On Energy Essay
An engine is a device, which transforms one form of energy into another form. While transforming
energy from one form to another, the efficiency of conversion plays an important role. Normally, most
of the engines convert thermal energy into mechanical work and therefore they are called heat engines
. Heat engine is a device that transforms the chemical energy of a fuel into thermal energy and utilizes
this thermal energy to perform useful work. Thus, thermal energy is converted to mechanical energy in
a heat engine. Fuel economy of engines is greatly improved from the past and probably continued to
be improved, increased in number of automobiles alone dictate that there will be a great demand for
fuel in the near future. Alternative fuel technology, availability, and use must and will become more
common in the coming decades. However, the use of an alternative fuel decreases the break thermal
efficiency of engines, due to lower calorific values compared to normal petrol fuel. Also due to the
high cost of petroleum products, some countries are developing and trying to use alternative fuels for
vehicles. Internal combustion engines are established as the main power source for the automobile
vehicles. At present emission norms become strict for any IC engine. The main pollutants in SI engine
are CO, UBHC, NOx, etc. from which CO and UBHC are the most harmful component. Since
emissions are byproducts of the combustion process, the main body of petrol engine research is to

The Middle East Conflict
The Middle East Conflict

The real differences around the world today are not between Jews and Arabs; Protestants and
Catholics; Muslims, Croats, and Serbs. The real differences are between those who embrace peace and
those who would destroy it; between those who look to the future and those who cling to the past;
between those who open their arms and those who are determined to clench their fists (William J.
Clinton, 2013). Even though people who live in Palestine/Turkey/Syria area between1988 2013 have

In the year 1947 1949 a war included five Arab armies was outnumbered by Zionists forces. The war
was fought on Palestine land and this is when the Arabs enter the conflict after the Zionist committed
33 massacre. The Arab forces joined together and took over seventy eight percent of Palestine s land;
Palestine was not considered being a part of the Map for many years. Eighteen years later Israel did a
surprised attack and conquered twenty two percent of their land in the sixth day war. This war was an
attack on a Navy Ship, which was considered to be an act of war on the United States.
The current conflict is trying to maintain an ethnically preferential state, especially when it is a large
foreign origin. Turkey has a peninsula piece of land that belongs to Syria and has possession of it to
this day. The other current conflict is the water resources that Turkey started damming the rivers.
Lastly Israel have military occupation that is confiscating privately owned land in the West Bank and
control over Gaza, and the Palestinians are having lesser control over their lives. Based on the Olso
peace accords the territory was supposed to become a part of the Palestinian state, but it keeps getting
worse due to the confiscation of land. However, the peace is not about the apartheid toward Palestine,

Michael Pollan s All Flesh Is Grass
In All Flesh Is Grass, Michael Pollan investigates the alternative models of producing food. To study
the agricultural food chain, Pollan begins his journey in chapter 8 at Joel Salatin s Polyface farm in
Virginia, helping to make hay. Polyface farm is home to a wide variety of crops and livestock:
chicken, beef, turkeys, eggs, rabbits, pigs, tomatoes, sweet corn and berries. Salatin calls himself a
grass farmer. He takes into a deeper analysis on organic food, one of the most rapidly expanding
product lines in America s supermarket. There Michael gets to see the symbiotic relationship between
animals and grass in action. Michael Pollan talks about an alternative method of producing food that is
being overshadowed by the big, industrial system. Salatin s 100 acre Farm produces 25,000 pounds of
beef, 50,000 pounds of pork, 30,000 dozen eggs, etc. Pollan indicates Polyface is an alternative farm,
resembles the old agricultural ideals, and that grass is the primary foundation for the farm. There is a
variety of native grasses and animals who contribute to how the farm function effectively without
chemical pesticides, fertilizers, or animal antibiotics. This is because everything on Salatin s farm

Research Paper On The Parthenon
The Parthenon is easily one of the most recognizable architectural landmarks in Greece. Resting on a
hill known as Acropolis located in Athens, the Parthenon has stood since the fifth century B.C. Even
though most of it was destroyed in 1687 when Venice rampaged throughout. Before that however, the
Parthenon served as not only a temple but a national symbol and artistic masterpiece as well (Spirko,

Parthenon translates to the virgin s place in Greek. The Parthenon was built for the virgin goddess
Athena and every four years there would be a parade like celebration to honor her. This was the main
purpose of building such a place. According to Ancient Greece.org the Parthenon represents the

Light and Dark Imagery in Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad is a novel about a man named Marlow and his journey into the
depths of the African Congo. Marlow is in search of a man named Kurtz, an ivory trader. Though
Marlow?s physical journey seems rather simple, it takes him further into his own heart and soul than
into the Congo. The setting, symbols and characters each contain light and dark images, these images
shape the central theme of the novel. Conrad uses light and dark imagery to help create the setting for
the story; light represents civilization while darkness suggests the uncivilized. The novel opens on the

The river Thames is the river that brings you into Europe, civilization, while the Congo brings you
into the jungle or darkness. Another important symbol in the story is the ivory. The ivory has a two
fold meaning and is a central theme in the novel. Ivory is taken from the tusks of male elephants; they
live in a pristine area untouched by humans. However, once the white man places a high price on the
ivory, the ivory turns from good to evil. Conrad uses the ivory as a representation of the greed and
corruption that is in the white mans soul. In the case of Kurtz this same greed and corruption overtook
his soul, and caused his death. Each character has a special role in the novel; Kurtz and Marlow are
the most important, through these two characters we are able to see how good and evil balance each
other out. Marlow?s journey into the heart of darkness can also be seen as a journey into his own soul.
He was in search of the darkest of objects, the ivory. Unlike Kurtz, Marlow was able to withstand the
darkness from controlling him. Kurtz soul became the darkness and caused him to forget everything
else there was to life. His last words were not that of love but rather of hate, ?The horrors the horrors.?

African Congo. By reading the novel and understanding all the imagery Conrad has inserted, we can

like a beginner s process and Drowning Girl looks more professional. Lichtenstein borrowed the
original image from a Donald Duck story book that showed Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck standing
on a dock fishing. Lichtenstein made alterations to the original image such as changing the shades of
the original colors and added more realistic humor. In the original image you see the Mickey and
Donald that everyone knows and loves having a good laugh, but in Lichtenstein you see more humor
and happiness in Donald s eyes. Donald and Mickey s happiness rubs off on you because you can feel
that whatever is going on is supposed to be funny and it is supposed to make you burst out into
laughter almost as if you were right there with them. Lichtenstein added a text to it, Look Mickey, I ve
hooked a big one!! The text gives more insight to what is going on in the picture because now our
imaginations have something else to create an image to see what will happen next. Lichtenstein
focused on Donald and Mickey and rotated the dock making it look sideways rather than at the end
and at the same time he was able to keep them in almost the same positions. He was able to position
Donald s body differently as well and his fishing rod to make it balance better. Donald is leaning
further into the water and Mickey is less and Mickey is blushing more because of how much he s

Genome Sequencing Of A Plant
Genome sequencing of a plant creates a genomic resource for the plant with the help of which further
studies can be conducted on it. But this kind of a comprehensive resource is only available for a few
species. The plants that are recently making their presence felt internationally lack this kind of a
resource despite having numerous health benefits. A valid collection of genome wide screening
markers can add to the genomic resource for such plants. One such crop is Stevia rebaudiana,
belonging to the genus Stevia of the sunflower family (Asteraceae), commonly known as Stevia,
Sweet Leaf, Sweet herb of Paraguay, Honey Leaf and Candy Leaf (Madan et al., 2010). Although it is
native to Paraguay, it is now successfully being cultivated throughout the world as an important exotic
crop. It is widely grown for its sweet leaves, the source of sweetener products known to contain 4 15%
of steviosides which are estimated to be 100 300 times sweeter than sucrose (Mondaca et al. 2012;

However on a human dominated planet, the distribution and populations of large mammals has slowly
been declining around the world. Due to this researchers have come to the conclusion sub Saharan
Africa is more or less the only place left on earth where there is still a relatively high diversity and
population of large mammals. This is not because the continent is naturally rich in large species, but
because it is one of the only places on earth where human activities have not yet wiped out these
incredible mammals. Sadly the influence of the East namely Korea and China and the United States is
decimating elephant, rhino, lion and giraffe. Unfortunately even now, even in our so called technically
advanced world there are hundreds of species that are still at threat of extinction because of humans.
Animals like the black rhino or the Sumatran tiger plus many more have the status of critically
endangered. But it is not all doom and gloom as many organizations like WWF have been working
diligently to protect the endangered creatures of the world. For example, the mountain gorillas of
Congo Basin have had a population increase of over 700 gorillas since 1989 because of their hard
work. So if Homosapiens never existed then the world would be most probably be a very different
place and many extinct animals might still be roaming the lands. Sadly our destructive

Adults need assistive technology because this allows them to overcome barriers and live
independently. This is an important issue because people want their freedom and independence when
moving from school to the working world. Many different areas come into play when adults are going

transportation, eating and food preparation, and safety. Each of these skills and abilities are required
for daily living of any individual. However, many adults with disabilities are require assistive

During this stage, the decision makers begin to see if they will get the return on investment they
initially anticipated.
Following a period of time, perhaps two or three years after approval, projects are reviewed to see
whether they should be continued. This reevaluation is referred to as a postcompletion audit.
Thorough postcompletion audits are typically performed on selected projects, usually the largest
projects in a given year s budget for the firm or for each division. Postcompletion audits show the
firms management how well the cash flows realized correspond with the cash flows forecasted several
years earlier. (Peterson et al, 2002)
The post completion audit serves to thoroughly analyze the initial decision to allocate resources to a
given project. If the project failed to meet established objectives this phase is often reffered to as a
post mortem analysis. By revisiting the project after an appropriate amount of time has passed,
decision makers can determine a project s success or failure. In the case of failure lessons learned can
be identified to avoid the same outcome in the future.
In creating a budget, decision makers attempt to forecast numbers as accurately as possible. Doing this
requires detailed assumptions regarding future costs and returns on investment. While historical data
can provide insight into future performance, it is by no means a reliable method that should be
expected to provide consistent results.

What Matters To Consumer Essay
What matters to Consumers?
Today, the differences in Macintosh computers and personal computers are smaller, but still important.
In fact, you can do everything on a Mac that you can do on a PC and vice versa. It is more about how
much you want to pay and what you will get in return. By looking at options based on quality,
capability, and price, we will see what consumers need. Choice and options are driving factors for
modern day consumers looking to buy a new computer.
The needs and wants for the consumers are very important. Consumers are becoming more conscious

Sacrifice In Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallow
In today s world, there are many people ready to make sacrifices. Some are doing it for their country,
and some for their family and friends. The definition of sacrifice according to Webster s dictionary is
an act of slaughtering an animal or person or surrendering a possession as an offering to God or to a
divine or supernatural figure. People today do not tend to go by the same definition as others, every
person has their own meaning of sacrifice. To me, a sacrifice is something that everyone should be
willing to make on a daily basis without the fear of death. If people stop making sacrifices, then why
should we expect our soldiers to make sacrifices for us at the border?
One of the finest examples of sacrifice was shown in a film, London has Fallen. In this film all the
world leaders were going to gather for a meeting in the Bellingham Palace. During the event terrorists
attacked the place. The life of the President of the United States was in jeopardy. To safeguard the

however, something has to drive these developments. Many people will say that necessity is the

humankind necessity really did drive innovation. In the 21st century, however, necessity really took a

At the time there was no such thing as a home computer. Even being in the epicenter of computer
technology, people didn t have personal computers. Wozniak started building simple computers,
mainly just as a hobby and to have a computer of his own, but Jobs recognized, with the insight that
would go on to be his legacy, that people would want a personal computer. Jobs and Wozniak built the
Apple I and started selling it around town to local computer stores and the like. But by the time they
had the Apple I in production Wozniak was developing Apple II. A much more user friendly machine

the cyclical existence that is nature. Some manifest as small changes, summer to fall, ice to water;
others a grand metamorphosis. Humans the center of this cycle, find themselves changing every day,
biologically, developmentally, ideologically, etcetera. Gabriel Garcia Marquez s The Handsomest
Drowned Man In The World, and Carson McCuller s Sucker are both excellent examples of short
stories that, despite having undeniably different plots, feature the overarching theme of
transformation: the propellant through life. Transitions come in many forms, physical evolutions being

It is seen in Marquez s literately work when the preparations are made for the Drowned mans funeral.
Villagers care for this drowned man like no other, orchestrating a grandiose funeral bringing people
from neighboring villages, and decorating him with charms and tailored clothing. They select people
to act as his family in the funeral and then they release the Drowned man back into the water, without
an anchor so that he could come back if he wished and whenever he wished (Marquez). This all
ostensibly unusual for a funeral in this area, especially for the funeral of a drowned stranger. Villagers

actions is also evident in McCuller s text when discussing the changes seen in sucker after Pete yells

the bed, acting tough, and avoiding conversation with Pete who says I don t even want to call him
sucker anymore (McCuller). Sucker s actions have become apparently contradictory to the past, to the
point where Pete doesn t even find it appropriate to use his previous name. Then similar to Garcia s
story, the change in practice is emblematic of other change found around the story, specifically more
rooted mental change. Transformation of the psyche, whether entirely or compartmentally, would

Basque Culture I grew up in a small town, which was highly populated with individuals of Basque
descent. My grandfather severed in the military and was stationed in Basque Country. Despite the
large Basque population surrounding me, I knew very little of the culture and traditions commonly
found within the Basque Country. The homeland of the Basque people, commonly called the Basque
Country, is located on the Bay of Biscay at the western end of the Pyrenees mountain range, straddling
the border of France and Spain. The nearly 8,000 square mile Basque Country is divided into seven
administrative districts, four in Spain and three in France. Basque culture is distinctive from that of the

Have you ever seen a supernova in person, if not not it was probably because Supernovas are difficult

vicinity every 15 million years . Another says, that, on average, a supernova explosion occurs within
10 parsecs (33 light years) of the Earth every 240 million years.
Only three Milky Way naked eye supernova events have been observed during the last thousand years,
though many have been telescopically seen in other galaxies. The most recent directly observed
supernova in the Milky Way was Kepler s Star of 1604 (SN 1604), but remnants of two more recent
supernovae have been found retrospectively. Statistical observations of supernovae in other galaxies

Helium Gas Lab
The mechanism that allows us to compute temperature values for pressure readings associated with a
Helium filled glass bulb is based on how system properties are linked together. The purpose of using
Helium gas is because Helium can remain in its gas state when surrounded by boiling liquid Nitrogen.
The goal is to determine the temperature of a gas based on the pressure readings of that gas, so in
order to determine a working equation, the ideal gas law will be modified to represent temperature.
T = P(V/nR) (1) There is a problem with using this equation due to the fact that we are not using an
ideal gas. We are using Helium, so adjustments must be made to the ideal gas law in order for proper
calculations to be computed. A route to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This issue can be fixed by introducing the coefficient of linear thermal expansion of the glass bulb. In
addition to the coefficient, we will multiply that value by three in order to satisfy the coefficient of
volume expansion. A constant temperature will be assumed, so we will multiply the coefficient of
volume expansion by t.
(pVo/RT)(1+(pv/prV)+3αt) = n. This equation still embraces how ideal gases interact within different
temperatures, so the second virial coefficient is introduced. The second virial coefficient alters the
equation by representing the imperfections associated with non ideal gases. The second virial
coefficient is also multiplied by (po/RTo) in order to relate the pressures of different environments to
the pressure of the bulb submerged in an ice bath.

Are Viruses Living Organelles
Viruses are small infectious agents that replicate inside the living cells of an organism. Several
thousand viruses have been described in detail since they were first discovered in the late 1800s,
though millions of different types are predicted to exist. There is debate in the scientific community
about whether viruses are living organisms or simply organic structures that interact with them, as
they resemble organisms in many ways but do not have their own metabolism and cannot naturally
reproduce outside a host cell. Virus particles, or virions, consist of two main parts: genetic material in
the form of DNA or RNA, which may be single or double stranded, and a protein coat, or capsid, that
encapsulates and protects those genes. To reproduce, a virion will attach to a specific host cell and
inject its genetic material into the cytoplasm in a process known as transduction. ... Show more

In this regard, viruses increase genetic diversity among organisms via horizontal gene transfer, and
therefore contribute to evolution1. The most common methods for viral multiplication are known as
lytic and lysogenic cycles; in the lytic cycle, the host cell immediately begins replicating the viral
nucleic acid, and the copied genetic materials are translated inside the cell. The capsids are assembled,
genetic material is repackaged inside the virus, and eventually the host cell bursts as the viral load
inside becomes overwhelming. In the lysogenic cycle, the viral nucleic acid is incorporated into the
host cell genome and remains inactive inside for an extended period. At some point, the viral genome
activates, and viral multiplication occurs as in the lytic

Plato Vs. Aristotle On Observational And Deductive Reasoning
Since the early sixth century, the questions of reality, matter, and change have perplexed philosophers.
These questions have since become a major topic of inquiry amongst philosophers eventually
garnering the attention of notable figures such as Plato and his pupil Aristotle. Although both Plato
and Aristotle shared many similar notions of order and an eternal universe, their methods of
inquisition as well as their theories of reality and truth vary significantly. This difference would
eventually lead them to develop vary different notions of real knowledge. Plato primarily focusing on
theoretical and mathematical proofs while Aristotle on observational and deductive reasoning
primarily in the field of biology. Due to these stark differences in both men s philosophy, I will be
contrasting both their beliefs, theories and methods, as it relates to knowledge, its acquisition and
change. I will also be discussing my opinions as the importance of their individual philosophy as it
relates to answering these questions.
Although Plato and Aristotle both believed that logic and order governed the natural world, they
disagreed on the nature of this design and thus their ideas of reality. Plato believed that all things in
our world are innately imperfect. The thing we see are just crude representations of an abstract
universal construct. Plato referred to this abstraction as the form which exists independently of all
material things in the mind of some divine architect (the

Adding exogenous enzymes to poultry feed is now a very common necessity in the agricultural
industry as a result of its commercial, environmental and animal benefits. Birds are mono gastric
animals, therefore, their endogenous enzymes, working alone, are unable to digest most nutrients in
their corn SBM based diets, hence the need for exogenous enzymes. These enzymes when added to
poultry feed helps with the digestion of phytate or phytic acids, polysaccharides like; xylans and beta
glucans. They also allow maximum retention of nutrients required by the bird, reduce intestinal
viscosity, improve faecal moisture, enhance intestina bacterial proliferation, and improve growth. In

The Pros And Cons Of The American Dream
America: the land where every opportunity is built on the optimism of the free market. Where actions
and consequences are replaced with push and pull economics. Where the customer is always right, no
matter how wrong they are. And no other time period so properly exemplifies this than the fifties. The
economy was booming, consumer goods were selling like hot cakes and housing prices were at an all
time low. It was the perfect time to be a blue collar family man, resting cozy in a picket fence
neighborhood with plastic pink flamingos scattered across his lawn, like plastic seeds grown from the
depths of a factory. Yes sir, it seemed like this was the epitome of the American Dream; we lived in a
world of the Optimism, and of dreams. But in doing so, have we lost the reality of our situation? Have
we become so blind to what we wanted that we failed to realize the repercussions of our actions to
achieve these goals? Jennifer Price believes so. For when she gazed into such an obscene conformity,
she could do nothing but laugh. And when she was done laughing, she created a snide commentary of
the egregious lapses in a system where the optimistic consumer is favored over the reality of his or her
surroundings. And no better trinket emphasized this than the Plastic Pink Flamingo craze in the 1950
s, the vehicle which Price uses to pursuit her claims

Management and doctors have been hesitant to adopt technology initiatives.
Biggest bother: increasing costs of using technology (Wyke, A 1997).
Medical economists blame technology for 50% of the rise (Callahan, D 2009).

Essay about The Great Gatsby and The Sun Also Rises
Americans in the 1920s were fresh off of World War I and freshly into the Prohibition Era. The
American Dream was well defined a life of wealth, comfort, and exuberance. After a World War I
victory, the Dream was thought to be in the near future for every American. The country was seen as a
world superpower, wealthy after the devastation of a war fought entirely overseas and brimming with
hope and possibility at least on the surface. Despite the highs experienced by much of the country, it
wasn t without its problems. Crime violence was benevolently running the streets and the Speakeasies
beyond the reach of full Prohibition, the world was being set up for The Great Depression, and
America was brimming with members of the Lost ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because of this injury, Jake cannot be with the woman he loves and this plot line serves as a catalyst
for the larger and far more important theme about the American Dream and chasing everything
desired, but never truly being able to achieve these dreams to satiation. Hemingway portrays the
Dream as both an overarching theme of the novel, but also shows us it s failures and quirks through
more minor means. Gender dynamics are broken and often swapped between characters the
protagonist, Jake Barnes, is unable to have sex or reproduce, putting him in a more effeminate role as
a man who must remain celibate for the remainder of his life. To juxtapose this lack of masculine
identity, Hemingway even places Jake opposite Lady Brett Ashley (Jake s love interest throughout the
novel) who self proclaims herself one of the chaps. She oftens exhibits what has traditionally been
considered masculine behavior. Brett has a rebellious wild streak, smokes and drinks, lacks any
religion or fully formed moral beliefs. She s promiscuous and soon to be a divorcee. Brett seems to
emasculate many of the men around her; both because of her self confident, almost aggressive
mannerisms and because of her ability to collect and throw away men at her slightest whim. Lady
Brett is everything (or at least many aspects) of what Jake might have been the strong, self assured and
self satisfied macho man who believes everything is some

Cultural Conformity and Race Essay
For centuries, racism has become the universal epitome of culture, despite the efforts of various
civilizations, such as the Western and European to combat these indifferences among people. A race is
specific social group that can be differentiated through various ways, from facial features and hair
textures, to social norms and habits that constitutes to that group. These differences contribute to our
uniqueness and humanity. Because people can be grouped by any number of differences, Man, lead by
his ignorance, perpetuated the issue once social hierarchies began to develop, splitting society to its
various groups. As a result, social disparity from one s upbringing became the common tendency to

Lacking financial assistance and exposed to the early onset of abuse by his father, Bragg realized that
there was a strict line, which drew improvised rural White Southerners and their counterparts as
unequal. The conception eventually influenced the phrase White Trash, a derogative term that
described the poor whites living in the United States with a degraded standard way of living. This
attack on moral failings eventually became a part of Bragg. Later in his memoir, Rick provides his
account where a wealthy fraternity at Jacksonville State throws a celebration for the children of poor
families. Initially, Rick extends his gratitude for their kindness but he has trouble relating with the
fraternity. Rick describes them as affluent people not rich by Manhattan standards, but Possum trot
ones, because poverty was what he was accustomed to (Bragg 97). He finds himself embarrassed and
bitter at the ignorance of the careless individuals who live with their backs turned to society. The
significance of this is that Bragg wished to capture of essence of the degree of meanness, degrees of
hatred, and of ignorance, that plagued the world (Bragg 62). Just like him, thousands of citizens in
United State experience prejudice and social disparity at least once in their lifetime. What makes it
more upsetting is the dehumanization and ridicule involved due to one s current condition. To an
extent, society has

Leadership s Enduring Success By Richard L. Hughes And...
In the opening of this paper the below description of the need for strategic leadership and the difficulty
in defining it can both be seen. In Becoming a Strategic Leader: Your Role in Your Organization s
Enduring Success by Richard L. Hughes and Katherine Colarelli Beatty define this difficulty
beautifully in their opening. The book opens with a description of the difficulty of learning to surf. As
you stand looking at the beautiful ocean, you move to begin paddling out through the waves only to
fail each time at getting up and successfully riding a wave all the way to shore. It speaks of trying and
practicing at home, only to be thrown when the moment counts. The imagery of attempting to learn to

The topic of this paper will not be to define strategic leadership, and but perhaps more importantly
identify the top five characteristics of strategic leaders in leadership roles in general, not just military
or business settings. This paper will address the difficulty in defining strategic leadership by
narrowing down a specific set of qualities or characteristics required to lead in that position. Since
there is no definitive definition for strategic leadership and the focus will turn to what qualities belong
to a strategic leader and thereby find the very elusive definition so many who are called upon to lead
strategically desire. The primary research question for this paper will be, If one were to develop the
essential list of characteristics for a strategic leader and cull that list down to the top five
characteristics needed for success in the position of any civilian primary leader, what would the list of
qualifications contain? This question will be answered by looking at strategic leadership in civilian
leadership setting, while utilizing principles and insight from the military world of leadership, this will
surely be a varied and complex list. The list, however, will be narrowed down utilizing the same arena
of sources and opinions with success stories associated with each characteristic. It will take a good
amount of research and a variety of both civilian and military sources in order to

Ocular Dominance
Understanding the Effect that Ophthalmologic Diseases have on the Development, and Maintenance,
of Ocular Dominance Columns
Vessa Pearsall
TA: Austin Ferro; Section 005
March 22, 2017
Abstract:
It is well understood that ocular dominance columns are a group of neurons that preferentially respond
to the input from one eye over the other. When these groups of neurons converge onto binocular cells
found in other layers, binocular vision is produced. However, it is less understood whether
ophthalmologic diseases, specifically forms of astigmatism, strabismus and cataracts, have an impact
on the development and maintenance of these ocular dominance columns. Ocular dominance columns
were labelled with cytochrome oxidase, an enzyme used to identify ... Show more content on

This enzyme will dye areas of high metabolic activity. This technique can be used to compare and
contrast the presence of ocular dominance columns in normal mammals with abnormal mammals (i.e.:
those with monocular, or decreased, vision).
Should include data using cytochrome oxidase to identify ODCs in patients with different
ophthalmologic disease.
Should talk about when cytochrome oxidase can be used (i.e.: alive versus dead) and the effect that
enucleation of an affected eye has on the presence of ODCs.
Conclusion: It can be concluded that ophthalmologic diseases do have detrimental impacts on the
development and maintenance of ocular dominance columns. This is due to the loss in binocular
vision, which is important for the development of depth perception as well as ocular dominance
columns. While monocular vision results in the shrinkage and disappearance of ocular dominance
columns, it would be interesting to see if ocular dominance columns could be re established if
binocular vision was

John Coltrane Influences
John Coltrane is considered one of the most important figures in jazz, alongside other greats such as
Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong. Coltrane struggled with drug addiction early on in his career, but
during the late 1950 s he was able to get through it. I chose John Coltrane because I consider myself a
fairly religious person, Coltrane himself was a religious person who wanted to bring positivity to
people through his music. Arguably Coltrane s most globally acclaimed record, A Love Supreme, was
greatly influenced by his devotion and love for God. This record shows just how much influence
Coltrane s religious awakening had on his musical creations. I want to learn more about John Coltrane
and how his own religious experiences shaped his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This spiritual awakening had a major impact on his musical career. In an essay written by Hamilton
Poore titled, John Coltrane s a Love Supreme, Yesterday and Today: Breaking Boundaries, Testing
Limits Hamilton explains how Coltrane s spiritual awakening came during a period where his health
and music were at its worst; this spiritual awakening had a significant role in Coltrane s musical career
(Hamilton Poore 190). It was not until after this life changing event that Coltrane began to experiment
with his music and play the tenor saxophone in a way no other had before. I believe that this spiritual
awakening allowed him to envision new and challenging ways to play the tenor saxophone. Coltrane
had already been gifted with the ability to play the saxophone, but his religious experience only
furthered his ability and I believe that God was the reason for his gifted techniques and talent. Once
John Coltrane had gotten over his heroin addiction he became fully absorbed with his music. He
rejoined the Miles Davis now sextet by 1959 and recorded the extremely famous Kind of Blue record.
This event came after he had been working alongside Thelonious Monk for a few years. The Kind of
Blue record showcased modal jazz best with the song So What (Miles). In this recording features a
two note riff that literally sounds as if the instruments are saying so

Five Forces Analysis of the Video Game Industry
Five Forces Analysis of the Video Game Industry
The video game industry is the economic sector involved with the development, marketing and sale of
video and computer games. It includes video game consoles, game software, handheld devices, mobile
games and online games. The video gaming industry has been growing exponentially in recent years
with Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo competing for the higher profits in the market. This essay will
analyze each of the five forces acting on the industry: threat of new entrants, threat of substitute
products or services, bargaining power of buyers, bargaining power of suppliers, and the competitive
rivalry among existing firms. Then it will be determined if the video game industry is still an ... Show

Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have been competing for a decade with Sony dominating the market
throughout most of the years because of their superior technological products. The video games
industry faces an entirely new rivalry situation. In 2008, Sony lost its strong position on the market,
because of Nintendo s success with their dynamic Wii over Sony s high tech PlayStation 3 and
Windows Xbox 360. Although the Wii was technologically much less advanced than PS3 and Xbox
360, the Wii s cheaper price, ease of use, innovative motion sensitive controller, and simple but fun
games, made the console a hit all demographics from 9 to 65 years old, male and female. All these
factors resulted in Nintendo s Wii dominating sales and surpassing Sony s by an impressive ratio of
2:1. With the competition in the video games industry getting more intense, the next steps of the video
game companies become more crucial for their positioning on the market. Due to the low product
differentiation, the next market leader will be the platform provider that manages to offer an
innovative gaming experience and a wider population of buyers that include all demographics.
Although the industry is being totally dominated by Nintendo s console, the industry is still considered

  • 2. Analyzing Hilda Doolittle s Poem Helen HELENNNNNN Helen of Troy is a prominent character in Greek mythology who is known for her beauty which caused the Trojan War. She is often viewed as a one dimensional character who singularly represents beauty. However, in Hilda Doolittle s poem entitled Helen , she uses an analysis of the image of Helen to support feminism. Her poem, written with three stanzas, describes a change in Helen s personal state in order to emphasize the negative effects of assuming that beauty indicates an absence of personality. Doolittle begins by describing, in simple terms, Greece s unanimous hate towards the character Helen, whose beauty tears apart Greece. By describing Helen as still and white, Doolittle conveys strong imagery of a conspicuous lack of motion. All Greece hates / the still eyes in the white face... where she stands... (H.D. 2 4). Helen, who is described as white and standing, appears very statuesque and immobile to readers. Interestingly, her eyes are said to have a lustre as of olives . ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 6). Here the verb has changed noticeably from hates to reviles , indicating the Greeks increased intensity of negative emotions towards Helen. Furthermore, Greece reacts with disgust to Helen s smile, creating the sense that Greece wants to deny Helen all movement, feelings, and life. The Greeks are said to hate her even more when she remembers past enchantments / and past ills (H.D. 10 11). Helen is likely remembering Troy, where her actions destroyed Greece. Calling the Trojan War a past ill for Helen is a direct contrast to the unsaid ills the Greeks suffered in the same war, which were much greater, at least in terms of life and death. Greece seems to think that whenever Helen does anything, she causes trouble or reminds people of the trouble she has caused. In fact, this stanza conveys the sense that Greece hate when Helen does anything but stand ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Characteristics Of Baroque Style Essay 1: Dazzle the Faithful To understand the characteristics of Baroque style is to truly understand artistic measures of the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. Baroque, a single word describing an entire period of art, can be broken down into more than one actual form of art. The new European age birthed this developing style of architecture, coming from ideas on religion and politics. Set apart in three different countries, visitors of St. Peter s Basilica, Versailles, and Hampton Court Palace, engulf themselves in historic Baroque styles and beauty. The international style was reinterpreted in different regions so that three distinct manifestations of the style emerged (Matthews 392). The florid, classical, and restrained baroque design of the three different buildings gives us a historic lesson on the reasoning behind its purpose. First, we visit St. Peter s Basilica and Adjoining Piazza in Rome. The beautiful structure still used today, initially was brought to fruition by Donato Bramante as a temple shaped like a Greek cross. Quickly Pope Paul V rejected the design, deeming the Greek cross to be pagan like. He commissioned Carlo Maderno to make some changes to the floor plan, adjusting the look into a Latin cross. The florid baroque styles are seen entering the Apse and Alter, which symbolized the power and richness of the church (392). The sculptures throughout, specifically in the Apse, are dramatic and real, shunning classical styles. Therefore, St. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Majestic Dinosaurs The title of the article I chose is Paleontologists probe the majestic reptiles origin and rise writen by Alenxandra Witze. This article talks about paleontologists excavating ancient fossils, giving them more information about the common ancestor of dinosaurs, and how they came to rule the earth for millions of years. The author gives us an example of what the ancestor of dinosaurs may have looked like, by telling us that it probably looked something like a chicken . Just as there was a mass extinction that wiped out most dinosaurs, there was a mass extinction millions years before, that gave the dinosaurs an opportunity to rise and evolve. 252 millions years ago, between the Permian and Triassic periods a mass extinction wiped out most life on Earth. This gave the opportunity for new groups to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The oldest piece of evidence showing that the first dinosaurs showed up during the Triassic time period, are the fossil footprints found that date back 250 million years, although not everyone is convinced that the footprints are definite evidence. Scientists are not sure how to classify some of the earliest species found between the three main branches of the dinosaur family tree: Theropods( two legged meat eaters), Sauropodomorphs(four legged, long neck plant eaters), and Ornithiscians ( bird hipped dinosaurs). Although these fossils help paleontologists discover new information, new findings also come from close relatives of dinosaurs, just like a long talk with an estranged cousin can help fill in family history, these discoveries are illuminating how dinosaurs evolved alongside other animals . One of the relatives that helped with this process are the silesaurids. Their bones help illuminate crucial differences between dinosaurs and their relatives deep in the ... • 5. Zionism and Non Zionists Essays Zionism declares that the Jews are more than a purely religious body, they are not only a race but also a nation (Berkowitz 376). Theodor Herzl, the father of political Zionism, states, We are a people one people. Both Herzl and Berkowitz have interesting key points about a Jewish State, the Jewish religion in general, and how to solve current issues in the religion. A State is formed by a social contract and is still being created today. Rousseau states, The conditions of this contract are so precisely defined by the nature of the agreement that the slightest alterations would make them null and void. The consequence is that, even where they are not expressly stated, they are everywhere identical, and everywhere tacitly accepted and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This fact proves that all Jews should and will stand together to solve and work out the problems such as poor treatment and portrayal. Herzl emphasizes, It is true that the Jewish State is conceived as a peculiarly modern structure on unspecified territory. But a State is formed, not by pieces of land, but rather by a number of men united under sovereign rule. For example, the portrayal of Jews from a non Zionist is much different from Zionists. It is an egregious and fatal error of the Zionists that they accept the misery of Israel as permanent, his wretchedness as hopeless (Berkowitz 372). Although forming a State or declaring an important religion can be difficult, there are many other risks such as, land disputes, current communities moving to a new land, views of merging with other countries, past and future suffering, and the most important, the emphasis on religion or nation. The first step to becoming a respected religious State is forming a society of Jews to perform scientific and political tasks. Second, Christians and current citizens of the State would be forced to move and find new land, like in times of war or destroyed land. Herzl does point out that if the Jewish State had help from the Christians it would become a peaceable voluntary departure of colonists. Third, the Jews have attempted to merge many places in the social life of other countries and to prefer faith of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Hydrogen as an Option for Fuel With gas prices escalating and fossil fuels becoming limited, scientists have been researching an alternative fuel source that will be more abundant and cost efficient. Issues with our current fuel source include the pollution that is emitted in our air and water sources and the fact that fossil fuels are becoming scarce. One alternative to gasoline is the use of hydrogen as a fuel source. With hydrogen as a fuel source pollution will be in decline, it has become increasingly more abundant than fossil fuels through extracting hydrogen from various sources, and is domestically produced. There are many pros to using hydrogen as an alternative fuel source; namely, its abundance, its low pollution, and the fact that it is being researched and extracted domestically. Hydrogen is one of the most abundant elements on earth and can be found in water, hydrocarbons and other organic matter. Because of hydrogen being so abundant scientists are able to extract it from a variety of sources, therefore, the problem with hydrogen as a fuel source is how to exactly make hydrogen an efficient fuel source. Currently hydrogen is extracted from natural gas, but this releases the greenhouse gas CO2 and uses up a limited resource. This does not relieve our current issues with using up fossil fuels, just displaces them. Recent research has suggested a means of how to resolve both of these problems. • 9. The Media s Impact On Public Opinion The media has always had a powerful impact on public opinion in Britain. With several different types and means of communication, such as TV, newspapers, social networking and radio, it is difficult for the public to not be even slightly impacted by the opinion of thousands that surrounds them every day. However, with newspapers spinning stories to promote the party they favour (such as the Daily Mail in favour of Conservatives or the Mirror in favour of Labour ) or to disparage the opposition, is it clear there is any obvious influence from the media towards the public in relation to reporting on British Politics? Since January 2001, the total circulation of the UK s ten major national newspapers has declined . It could be said that the press choose to slander politicians to gain attention from the public to push sales, rather than inform the public on the real political issues at hand. For example, women s magazines discuss political issues such as abortion and the tampon tax , rather than commercial newspapers that publish stories such as scrutinizing politician Jeremy Corbyn for his subtle head nod at the remembrance Sunday cenotaph. In a declining market for their product, newspaper titles battle against each other for audiences and advertising revenue in their respective market segments, while the press as a whole is engaged in competition with other media sectors, such as the news via the internet, which makes it easier for the public to instantly engage with ... • 11. The Effect Of Heat Engines On Energy Essay An engine is a device, which transforms one form of energy into another form. While transforming energy from one form to another, the efficiency of conversion plays an important role. Normally, most of the engines convert thermal energy into mechanical work and therefore they are called heat engines . Heat engine is a device that transforms the chemical energy of a fuel into thermal energy and utilizes this thermal energy to perform useful work. Thus, thermal energy is converted to mechanical energy in a heat engine. Fuel economy of engines is greatly improved from the past and probably continued to be improved, increased in number of automobiles alone dictate that there will be a great demand for fuel in the near future. Alternative fuel technology, availability, and use must and will become more common in the coming decades. However, the use of an alternative fuel decreases the break thermal efficiency of engines, due to lower calorific values compared to normal petrol fuel. Also due to the high cost of petroleum products, some countries are developing and trying to use alternative fuels for vehicles. Internal combustion engines are established as the main power source for the automobile vehicles. At present emission norms become strict for any IC engine. The main pollutants in SI engine are CO, UBHC, NOx, etc. from which CO and UBHC are the most harmful component. Since emissions are byproducts of the combustion process, the main body of petrol engine research is to work ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To study the agricultural food chain, Pollan begins his journey in chapter 8 at Joel Salatin s Polyface farm in Virginia, helping to make hay. Polyface farm is home to a wide variety of crops and livestock: chicken, beef, turkeys, eggs, rabbits, pigs, tomatoes, sweet corn and berries. Salatin calls himself a grass farmer. He takes into a deeper analysis on organic food, one of the most rapidly expanding product lines in America s supermarket. There Michael gets to see the symbiotic relationship between animals and grass in action. Michael Pollan talks about an alternative method of producing food that is being overshadowed by the big, industrial system. Salatin s 100 acre Farm produces 25,000 pounds of beef, 50,000 pounds of pork, 30,000 dozen eggs, etc. Pollan indicates Polyface is an alternative farm, resembles the old agricultural ideals, and that grass is the primary foundation for the farm. The setting, symbols and characters each contain light and dark images, these images shape the central theme of the novel. The river Thames is the river that brings you into Europe, civilization, while the Congo brings you into the jungle or darkness. Another important symbol in the story is the ivory. The ivory has a two fold meaning and is a central theme in the novel. Ivory is taken from the tusks of male elephants; they live in a pristine area untouched by humans. However, once the white man places a high price on the ivory, the ivory turns from good to evil. Conrad uses the ivory as a representation of the greed and corruption that is in the white mans soul. In the case of Kurtz this same greed and corruption overtook his soul, and caused his death. Each character has a special role in the novel; Kurtz and Marlow are the most important, through these two characters we are able to see how good and evil balance each other out. Marlow?s journey into the heart of darkness can also be seen as a journey into his own soul. He was in search of the darkest of objects, the ivory. Unlike Kurtz, Marlow was able to withstand the darkness from controlling him. Kurtz soul became the darkness and caused him to forget everything else there was to life. All living creatures on this earth contribute in some way to the ecosystem that we all are a part of. Unfortunately, the one species that has the greatest control of the earth is us, the homosapiens. Modern humans began to develop nearly 200 000 years ago and ever since then populations of homosapiens have spread across the entire world. However on a human dominated planet, the distribution and populations of large mammals has slowly been declining around the world. Due to this researchers have come to the conclusion sub Saharan Africa is more or less the only place left on earth where there is still a relatively high diversity and population of large mammals. This is not because the continent is naturally rich in large species, but because it is one of the only places on earth where human activities have not yet wiped out these incredible mammals. Sadly the influence of the East namely Korea and China and the United States is decimating elephant, rhino, lion and giraffe. Unfortunately even now, even in our so called technically advanced world there are hundreds of species that are still at threat of extinction because of humans. Animals like the black rhino or the Sumatran tiger plus many more have the status of critically endangered. But it is not all doom and gloom as many organizations like WWF have been working diligently to protect the endangered creatures of the world. For example, the mountain gorillas of Congo Basin have had a population increase of over 700 gorillas since 1989 because of their hard work. During this stage, the decision makers begin to see if they will get the return on investment they initially anticipated. Following a period of time, perhaps two or three years after approval, projects are reviewed to see whether they should be continued. This reevaluation is referred to as a postcompletion audit. Thorough postcompletion audits are typically performed on selected projects, usually the largest projects in a given year s budget for the firm or for each division. Postcompletion audits show the firms management how well the cash flows realized correspond with the cash flows forecasted several years earlier. (Peterson et al, 2002) The post completion audit serves to thoroughly analyze the initial decision to allocate resources to a given project. If the project failed to meet established objectives this phase is often reffered to as a post mortem analysis. By revisiting the project after an appropriate amount of time has passed, decision makers can determine a project s success or failure. In the case of failure lessons learned can be identified to avoid the same outcome in the future. In creating a budget, decision makers attempt to forecast numbers as accurately as possible. Doing this requires detailed assumptions regarding future costs and returns on investment. While historical data can provide insight into future performance, it is by no means a reliable method that should be expected to provide consistent results. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To me, a sacrifice is something that everyone should be willing to make on a daily basis without the fear of death. If people stop making sacrifices, then why should we expect our soldiers to make sacrifices for us at the border? One of the finest examples of sacrifice was shown in a film, London has Fallen. Helium Gas Lab The mechanism that allows us to compute temperature values for pressure readings associated with a Helium filled glass bulb is based on how system properties are linked together. The purpose of using Helium gas is because Helium can remain in its gas state when surrounded by boiling liquid Nitrogen. The goal is to determine the temperature of a gas based on the pressure readings of that gas, so in order to determine a working equation, the ideal gas law will be modified to represent temperature. Several thousand viruses have been described in detail since they were first discovered in the late 1800s, though millions of different types are predicted to exist. There is debate in the scientific community about whether viruses are living organisms or simply organic structures that interact with them, as they resemble organisms in many ways but do not have their own metabolism and cannot naturally reproduce outside a host cell. Virus particles, or virions, consist of two main parts: genetic material in the form of DNA or RNA, which may be single or double stranded, and a protein coat, or capsid, that encapsulates and protects those genes. To reproduce, a virion will attach to a specific host cell and inject its genetic material into the cytoplasm in a process known as transduction. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The capsids are assembled, genetic material is repackaged inside the virus, and eventually the host cell bursts as the viral load inside becomes overwhelming. The American Dream was well defined a life of wealth, comfort, and exuberance. After a World War I victory, the Dream was thought to be in the near future for every American. The country was seen as a world superpower, wealthy after the devastation of a war fought entirely overseas and brimming with hope and possibility at least on the surface. Despite the highs experienced by much of the country, it wasn t without its problems. Crime violence was benevolently running the streets and the Speakeasies beyond the reach of full Prohibition, the world was being set up for The Great Depression, and America was brimming with members of the Lost ... Hemingway portrays the Dream as both an overarching theme of the novel, but also shows us it s failures and quirks through more minor means. Gender dynamics are broken and often swapped between characters the protagonist, Jake Barnes, is unable to have sex or reproduce, putting him in a more effeminate role as a man who must remain celibate for the remainder of his life. To juxtapose this lack of masculine identity, Hemingway even places Jake opposite Lady Brett Ashley (Jake s love interest throughout the novel) who self proclaims herself one of the chaps. She oftens exhibits what has traditionally been considered masculine behavior. Brett has a rebellious wild streak, smokes and drinks, lacks any religion or fully formed moral beliefs. She s promiscuous and soon to be a divorcee. Brett seems to emasculate many of the men around her; both because of her self confident, almost aggressive mannerisms and because of her ability to collect and throw away men at her slightest whim. Lady Brett is everything (or at least many aspects) of what Jake might have been the strong, self assured and self satisfied macho man who believes everything is some ... Cultural Conformity and Race Essay For centuries, racism has become the universal epitome of culture, despite the efforts of various civilizations, such as the Western and European to combat these indifferences among people. A race is specific social group that can be differentiated through various ways, from facial features and hair textures, to social norms and habits that constitutes to that group. These differences contribute to our uniqueness and humanity. Because people can be grouped by any number of differences, Man, lead by his ignorance, perpetuated the issue once social hierarchies began to develop, splitting society to its various groups. Lacking financial assistance and exposed to the early onset of abuse by his father, Bragg realized that there was a strict line, which drew improvised rural White Southerners and their counterparts as unequal. The conception eventually influenced the phrase White Trash, a derogative term that described the poor whites living in the United States with a degraded standard way of living. This attack on moral failings eventually became a part of Bragg. Later in his memoir, Rick provides his account where a wealthy fraternity at Jacksonville State throws a celebration for the children of poor families. Initially, Rick extends his gratitude for their kindness but he has trouble relating with the fraternity. Rick describes them as affluent people not rich by Manhattan standards, but Possum trot ones, because poverty was what he was accustomed to (Bragg 97). He finds himself embarrassed and bitter at the ignorance of the careless individuals who live with their backs turned to society. The significance of this is that Bragg wished to capture of essence of the degree of meanness, degrees of hatred, and of ignorance, that plagued the world (Bragg 62). Just like him, thousands of citizens in United State experience prejudice and social disparity at least once in their lifetime. • 47. Ocular Dominance Understanding the Effect that Ophthalmologic Diseases have on the Development, and Maintenance, of Ocular Dominance Columns Vessa Pearsall TA: Austin Ferro; Section 005 March 22, 2017 Abstract: It is well understood that ocular dominance columns are a group of neurons that preferentially respond to the input from one eye over the other. When these groups of neurons converge onto binocular cells found in other layers, binocular vision is produced. However, it is less understood whether ophthalmologic diseases, specifically forms of astigmatism, strabismus and cataracts, have an impact on the development and maintenance of these ocular dominance columns. Ocular dominance columns were labelled with cytochrome oxidase, an enzyme used to identify ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This enzyme will dye areas of high metabolic activity. This technique can be used to compare and contrast the presence of ocular dominance columns in normal mammals with abnormal mammals (i.e.: those with monocular, or decreased, vision). Should include data using cytochrome oxidase to identify ODCs in patients with different ophthalmologic disease. Should talk about when cytochrome oxidase can be used (i.e.: alive versus dead) and the effect that enucleation of an affected eye has on the presence of ODCs. Conclusion: It can be concluded that ophthalmologic diseases do have detrimental impacts on the development and maintenance of ocular dominance columns. This is due to the loss in binocular vision, which is important for the development of depth perception as well as ocular dominance columns. While monocular vision results in the shrinkage and disappearance of ocular dominance columns, it would be interesting to see if ocular dominance columns could be re established if binocular vision was ... In an essay written by Hamilton Poore titled, John Coltrane s a Love Supreme, Yesterday and Today: Breaking Boundaries, Testing Limits Hamilton explains how Coltrane s spiritual awakening came during a period where his health and music were at its worst; this spiritual awakening had a significant role in Coltrane s musical career (Hamilton Poore 190). It was not until after this life changing event that Coltrane began to experiment with his music and play the tenor saxophone in a way no other had before. I believe that this spiritual awakening allowed him to envision new and challenging ways to play the tenor saxophone. Coltrane had already been gifted with the ability to play the saxophone, but his religious experience only furthered his ability and I believe that God was the reason for his gifted techniques and talent. Once John Coltrane had gotten over his heroin addiction he became fully absorbed with his music. He rejoined the Miles Davis now sextet by 1959 and recorded the extremely famous Kind of Blue record. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have been competing for a decade with Sony dominating the market throughout most of the years because of their superior technological products. The video games industry faces an entirely new rivalry situation. In 2008, Sony lost its strong position on the market, because of Nintendo s success with their dynamic Wii over Sony s high tech PlayStation 3 and Windows Xbox 360. Although the Wii was technologically much less advanced than PS3 and Xbox 360, the Wii s cheaper price, ease of use, innovative motion sensitive controller, and simple but fun games, made the console a hit all demographics from 9 to 65 years old, male and female. All these factors resulted in Nintendo s Wii dominating sales and surpassing Sony s by an impressive ratio of 2:1.
