Compare And Contrast The New England Middle And Southern...
Introduction
The New England, Middle and Southern colonies were the part of the New World which used to
belong to the British. Although the colonies all had good things, all of the regions had things that
didnВґt help them grow as a region. Some colonies had rocky soil for example. Having a good
climate and a good topography is part of agriculture, having materials to work is part of
manufacturing. If no one has the right materials than the most probable thing to happen is that
people will not be as productive as with the right materials.
Industry
Each of the three regions had different types of industry. The New England colonies used to do
shipbuilding activities, lumbering and fishing. In England the Pilgrims built the Mayflower. That

The reason for the New England colonies to have a lot of Pilgrims was because who settled in
Massachusetts were the Pilgrims with the Mayflower ship. The Mayflower ship landed in
Massachusetts in December 21, 1921. In the Middle Colonies the people who settled where the
settlers from Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, France and Scotland. New Sweden and New
Netherlands joined and became Delaware, that junction was made by the Duke of York. The
Southern colonies were settled by the Puritans, the Puritans who settled in the Southern colonies
settled mostly for economic reasons. The Puritans usually would take African slaves for the
Southern Colonies.
When it was founded
The New England colonies where entirely founded when the Rhode Island was founded by
Roger Williams in 1636. The first New England colony to be founded was New Hampshire which
was founded by John Wheelwright. The Middle Colonies was totally founded when William Penn
founded Pennsylvania in 1682. The first colony from the Middle Colonies to be founded was Peter
Minuit in 1626. The Southern colonies were completely founded when Georgia was founded
byJames Olgethorpe in 1732. The first colony to be founded in the Southern Colonies was Virginia
which was founded in 1607 John Smith.

Mama Day By Gloria Naylor Essay
Gloria Naylor gave non black audiences an insight of black women using different perspectives.
As a child Gloria read white American Literature, which later lead her to be a writer and publish
great insight perspective writings.(encyclopedia) As Gloria got older, she was an advanced
student in high school, she even graduated with honors.(encyclopedia) Later, while in college
she faced an obstacle of finding her blackness after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr.(encyclopedia).She then left to be a teacher for Jehovah Witness as a way to search for her
purpose.(encyclopedia) Her whole childhood geared her towards being an author, and to write
one of her most popular books The Women of Brewster Place . The Women of Brewster Place was
an interesting and stereotype changing book. She thought that white American Literature were
underrepresenting black women, so she decided to write. Gloria s experiences helped her with
creating the characters that have a different background , lifestyle , struggles, ages ,and situations.
She wanted to break the stereotype and to give non colored people a clean mindset of a colored

where William Shakespeare s The Tempest meets black folklore.(edit. Of ency. brit.) Naylor s
next book was Linden Hills which theme is over the destroying of materialism in black
neighborhoods.(edit. Of ency. brit.) And, the tone of suffering goes with her writing Bailey s

Ampicillin VS Inhibition Zone Growth of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and
Enterococcus faecalis
Introduction
The variety of bacteria that lives in our world today is endless. With variety of bacteria comes a
numerous amount of adaptations and enhancements that the bacteria develops, including antibiotic
resistance. Escherichia coli, better known as E.coli, is a gram negative bacteria with several
different types of clones with a variety of effects. E.coli often enters the intestinal tract as soon as
an infant is born and some forms of it are not pathogenic but rather beneficial to the body(Kaper et
al, 2004). When infected with pathogenic E.coli, the body often responds, depending of the type of
pathogenic E.coli, with diarrhea, vomiting, upset stomach. etc. The rate at which E.coli is adapting,
is creating a much more difficult job to find antibiotics that can eliminate the growth of this bacteria
(Tadasse et al., 2002). Enterococcus faecalis is an infectious bacteria that often thrives in extreme
environments (McBride et al, 2007). Enterococcus faecalis is an opportunistic gram positive
bacteria that is usually found in the vaginal tract, intestinal tract or the oral cavity. This bacteria has
a high resistance to many bile salt detergents, heavy metals, ethanol, azide, and desiccation, worries
hospitals due to their variable tolerance (Zhang W et al, 2013). Staphylococcus Aureus is also an
infectious gram positive bacteria that may cause a

Julius Rosenberg Research Paper
As a child, I remember my relatives offering me a piece of gum and ending up finding out that it
was a shocking toy! Surprisingly, Ouch!, I said. Comparing that shock to an electric chair, could
you imagine the pain? In 1953, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who shared the same admiration for the
Communist party, were both executed with an electric chair. Due to their involvement with the
Soviet Union and transferring information from their connections during World War II, they were
caught and executed. One hundred years ago, Julius Rosenberg was born in New York City. His
parents immigrated from Russia. He was so fascinated by politics that he joined the Young
Communist League as a teenager. When he attended college, he studied electrical engineering and
soon after became an engineer for the United StatesArmy. Three years before Julius was born,
Ethel was born on 1915. Being a part of many theater shows at her school, she always appreciated
music and theater during high school. She started to be in support of the Communist Party when
she was involved in a worker s union at her job, where she met Julius at a union event.... Show more

He was able to obtain private plans of the U.S. Army s atomic bomb and the making of their
proximity fuse. He persuaded Ethel s brother, David Greenglass who was in the U.S. Army, to share
the information since he was working for the development of the weapons. Eventually, when the
Soviets used their atomic bomb, United States figured things out. The United States government
grew suspicious and investigated. Rosenberg s codename appeared when they decoded the text
where he and Greenglass communicated. Later on, Ethel s own brother and his wife testified to the
authorities that Ethel was associated with the espionage, by typing Greenglass

Migrant Hostel And 10 Mary Street
An individual s sense of belonging is determined not only by their own choices but also attitudes of
others.
Belonging is the connection to person place, or thing. Belonging can have a positive impacts for
example, immigrants arriving in a new country and bad examples can include someone blending
into a bad population. Poems Migrant Hostel and 10 Mary Street portray belonging via literary
techniques by Peter Skrzynecki, and also The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan convey belonging and how
ones choices and attitudes of others affect the sense of acceptance. Migrant Hostel includes poet
Skrzynecki and his family living in a hostel along with other Polish migrants, Peter Skrzynecki
documents his experiences, as well as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The objective was to establish a comparison between Polish migrants and birds such as pigeons.
Birds are free and accepted in their micro communities, unlike Skrzynecki whom is isolated from
belonging. The poet struggles to find a sense of belonging, using the technique irony to highlight his
search for acceptance. Alternatively, another poetic technique can include imagery which is
utilized in the line A barrier at the main gate . Skrzynecki thoroughly conveys the barricade that
segregates the foreigners from Australian society. This leads to separation of the Migrants and the
rest of the local Australian society being an example of racism at the poets time. The poet, Peter
Skrzynecki adequately applies techniques to convey belonging in order to encourage society to
accept migrants who have already experienced hardship. In summary, Skrzynecki uses an array of
techniques to evoke the search of belonging to the readers.
The poem 10 Mary Street by Peter Skrzynecki portrays a sense of acceptance to place as he feels
a bond to his childhood home which offered him stability in a new environment . The poem by
Skrzynecki conveys feelings to readers received from the place of his memories, in the home. The
poet utilizes literary technique personification, which allows the audience to visualize his admirable
home. This is demonstrated in the quote The house stands in its China blue coat with paint
guaranteed for another 10 years . The notion

Negative Effects Of Advertising
Firstly, advertisements have negative impacts on young people. Media has played a major role in
influencing people s perception of the differences between male and female expectations. For
example, sex appeal in advertising can have negative effects on youth s self esteem, body image
and can brainwash their young minds to purchase the company s products. Advertisements have
always used sex appeal to gain attention and persuade people to buy that certain product. The media
creates an unrealistic body image, and women are often shown as sexy, thin and beautiful. These
images can pressurize young people to look and behave this way. Also, it can impact them
physically and mentally and decrease their self esteem/self worth. A tool that is used... Show more

For instance, youngsters that don t buy branded clothes or shoes may feel bad about themselves
and might start to believe that they don t fit in the group. Advertisements can encourage people to
buy products and make them think that purchasing and consuming are a major part of their lives.
Therefore, advertisements can alter an individual s way of thinking and force them to believe and
feel in a certain way. Secondly, there is a lack of equal representation in video games. Women are
often represented as submissive and subordinate characters that depend on men. They are
oftentimes categorized in four groups of characters like sex objects or prizes, victims, feminists
and heroes (Dupon). For young people that are still developing their perception about women, these
stereotypes can be detrimental and create a misrepresentation on women. Female roles in video
games are presented as sexual objects and victims, but male gender roles are shown as heroes,
villains and as overly aggressive and violent. In video games, female characters are excessively
under represented and are mainly given secondary roles in relation to men. For examples Mario
Brother s popular princess Peach Toadstool was present in the early video games, but the players
could not choose to play her character. She was a damsel in distress that the brothers were
attempting to rescue . Women in video games are shown scantily clad and used as

White Supremacy In African Americans
Race refers to a group of persons who are different from other groups due to their alleged genetic
and physical traits. On one hand, racism is the preconception that members of a certain race are
prime than individuals of other races. In America, white supremacy is the belief that whites are
superior to others. White supremacy took different forms, such as colonialism, slavery, and
apartheid and has led to institutional racism. Members of minority races, particularly African
Americans, have experienced institutional racism in both political and social institutions in many
forms including discriminationin health care, employment, incarceration rates, housing, education,
and politics. On the other hand, racial worldview entails declaring oneself to be superior over...

They included the G.I bill, the war on drugs, and the suburban shift. The G.I. bill, which was
passed in 1944, provided numerous benefits to World War II veterans. This bill aimed to assist
returning veterans by offering them benefits, such as financial aid to pursue education, low cost
mortgages, and low interest loans so that they could conform to civilian life. However, many
African American veterans did not profit from this bill like their White Americans counterparts.
Although the bill did not explicitly advocate racial discrimination, it was interpreted differently
for both races and it somehow simulated the Jim Crow laws. For example, mortgage agencies and
banks refused to lend loans to African American veterans after they returned from war, making
them face poverty (page 308). The war on drugs has been viewed as a discriminatory process
because it has led to the captivity of more Africans Americans than slavery. American prisons house
more African Americans due to discriminatory mandatory sentencing and misguided drug laws
since the drug war began in the 1970s (page

Literature Review Of Globalization
Up to now the literature review has given an insight into the concept of globalization, and the
understanding of several academics in the light of how this phenomenon developed over the years.
It is then essential to cover what the economic benefits of globalization are, and how these may
impact a sector or company. Most of the literature study s that have been written on the economic
benefits of globalizationhave been after 2006. The reason is because the studies used the
globalization index which was created by Dreher (2006) then further developed by Dreher (2008)
again. Many of the empirical studies used this index as indicator as a base to form their findings.

He goes on to imply that business must make global strategies that would involve making
investments in as much countries as possible. Rajdeep, Murali Robert (2008) agrees with Tallman,
as he extends his view that these strategies must become more flexible and effective to comply with
needs of the changing environment.
The perspective of Driffield and Karoglou (2016) on this issue, discuss that the biggest restriction to
free trade and globalization is uncertainty. Therefore, many organizations will hinder when it comes
making strategic choices about their financial states. Subsequently they derive that one of the most
positive impacts that has occurred because globalization is the creation of the free market. They
say that the creation of this market has made it easier for organization in the car industry to easily
import and export the good that they require from other border countries.
Impact on employment
Furthermore, there is also literature written on the impact free trade has on the gears of an
economic state. One of the components is the effects on employment, and how the free movement
of goods has impacted on this section. Bassanini and Duval 2006 derive from their works that there
is a direct link between free market and unemployment. However, they adhere that there isn t a lot
of research done on the surrounding area. Davis (1998) believes that the advancements in free trade
can destroy employment, and have severe consequences. Furthermore, some

After about an hour or two of swimming, Bubbles told her that in a few minutes we would

Each of these areas has a historic recorded hit by one or more major hurricanes. Because
hurricane winds start at 75 mph and can reach up to 156 miles per hour or more, the damage of
the winds can be extensive (NOAA). Winds will rip the roof off of a house or tip over a mobile
home. Debris is scattered with bullet like force. Storm surge floods buildings, streets and lands.
Hurricane spawned tornado winds cause extra natural destruction. Finally, what little natural habitat
is left untouched by humans can be fully devastated by hurricane aftermath.
Most Atlantic hurricanes start out in the North Atlantic Ocean, which is called the hurricane
breeding ground. Rarely a hurricane will form in the Caribbean Sea and sometimes the Gulf of

occurred in the most recent 2009 hurricane season with the eye of the tropical storm named
Claudette coming ashore over the Florida panhandle and reaching 60 mph of the 75 mph limit to

Much Ado About Nothing Tragedy
Tragicomedies, a type of writing or play, has been around for thousands of years. Much Ado
About Nothing, a drama written by playwright William Shakespeare, exemplifies compelling
characteristics that show up in tragicomedies. A few of the work s character s, such as Hero,
Beatrice, Benedick, Dogberry, Don Pedro, and Claudio, provide multiple examples of what a
tragicomedy has to offer. Shakespeare s dramaMuch Ado About Nothingis both a comedy and a
tragedy due to Dogberry s monologue, Hero s exposure of her unfaithfulness, and Beatrice and
Benedick s love.

After the two future lovers were tricked into falling for each other, Hero was accused of her
unfaithfulness to Claudio by being around another man. Beatrice later said to Benedick Kill
Claudio...Not for the wide world. You kill me to deny it. Farewell (Act 4, Scene 1, 74). In her
eyes, Beatrice believes that Hero would do no such thing as cheat on her future husband, and that
Claudio must be murdered for his treason of calling her out in front of the crowd on the most
important day of her life. The idea of a possible death to a main character created a sense of panic
to readers and the thought of lifetime friends fighting to the death seems extremely inhumane.
On the other hand, once the conflict is resolved and Don John is found guilty of the entire

interest expense for 2004 will be $35.53. ($323 * .11 = $5.53) iii. The cash amount to be paid for
these leases in 2004 will be $44. iv. Lease Payable$8.47 Interest Expense$35.53 Cash$44 v. As of
December 31, 2003 the amount of the Capital Lease liability that is current equals $8.47 (the
amount by which the principal will be reduced). This estimate differs from current maturities of
capital leases because current maturities ($25) represent leases that will be retired during 2004.
The payment of $44 is to the portfolio of all leases and therefore reflects the interest and
principal portions in terms of all of the leases. The amount that actually went to interest and
principal cannot be determined without accounting for each lease individually. J. i. The present

The Blown Epidemic
The clown epidemic that started in the US has reached the shores of the UK and it s just as
terrifying! Sightings of these Jokers have been reported throughout Essex, Newcastle,
Manchester and Wales; Striking fear and anxiety into the locals. Although the idea of a grown
man wearing clown make up, a frizzy wig and a big red nose has been, to many, a source of
nightmares for decades; the scary clown frenzy began after the release of Stephen King s horrifying
novel It and the feature film following the Pennywise character terrorising teenagers. Even after
three decades, the themes of the novel/film carry weight. The clown frenzy in the US grew to
massive proportion late September as 6000 students took it upon themselves to hunt down these

Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome
INTRODUCTION
Median Arcuate Ligament Symdrome (MAL) is a very rare condition also knows as celiac axis
compression syndrome (CACS) or Dunbar syndrome. This syndrome has a characteristic triad of
postprandial abdominal pain, abdominal bruit and weight loss. Others symptoms that are
commonly described are nausea and vomiting 1,2 .
As these symptoms are not specific and at the same time overlap with a broad of others conditions,
the diagnosis is often made by exclusion. By the overlap of symptoms and its characteristics, among
the most common diagnoses given to patients with this disease are intestinal ischemia and
functional gastrointestinal disorder (FGID) 1, 3.
The first description of this syndrome was made by Harjola in 1963, but in ... Show more content on

Other cause that has been proposed for extrinsic compression of the celiac artery is the enlargement
of the celiac ganglionar plexus and low insertion of the ligament by itself 5,8.
Another theory is a sympathetic overstimulation on the celiac artery that can cause a
vasoconstriction of the trunk. A steeling phenomenon has been also reported, in which the blood
celiac artery is derived to the superior mesenteric artery, causing an ischemic pain 2,5.
As it was referred before, the prevalence of MAL is calculated to be 10 24%, but the most of the
cases remain asymptomatic. This variation in the presentation can be due to a more extensive
collateral blood supply from the superior or inferior mesenteric arteries 6,7.
The clinical presentation can be vary variable, but the common symptoms are postprandial
abdominal pain (80% of patients) and weight loss of 20 pounds (48% of patients). others symptoms
are nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. At the physical examination an epigastric bruit, can be found,
but it is reported only in 35% of cases. This bruit can change with respiration, been more intensive

The Use of Horizontal and Vertical Integration by Carnegie...
The use of horizontal and vertical integration by Carnegie in the industrialization period
Throughout history many people used unfair ways to improve their lives over others. In the late
18th century and early 19th century the use of vertical integration became more popular and used
by large business owners. Vertical integration is when a company attempts to own all parts of the
business by owning every piece that goes into the product being created. One large business owner
who was a robber baron and particularly used vertical integration was Andrew Carnegie. He used
these tactics as a way to improve his business and wealth. Under the table deals, allowed
businessmen s company s to flourish, resulting in them becoming wealthy, ... Show more content on

The use of vertical integration by Carnegie was taking business away from other industries who
needed citizens and companies to purchase their product. Carnegie became more popular and
people started to buy his steel over others which had a negative effect on society as a whole
while only improving his earnings and taking from other industries. Along with using vertical
integration negatively, Carnegie was a robber baron. A robber baron is a business owner who
tends to use ruthful tactics to gain more wealth. Carnegie Steel and many other business
enterprises had people working for them in harsh conditions that were unsafe and unsanitary.
Along with getting low pay, the workers were also forced to work 7 days a week for
unbelievable hours. Carnegie s factories were unsanitary, poorly ventilated and the employees
were underpaid and overworked in unsafe environments. Overall, Carnegie abused his power of
wealth to overrule his employees and used vertical integration to take from other industries, but
without doing so he would not be as successful as he was. If Carnegie wanted to be a successful
business leader, he would have to do whatever it took to improve his company without breaking
the law. In the late 18th century and early 19th century, there were no laws on how workers should
be treated, wage laws or how sanitary factories must be showing that Carnegie was not the only
business owner treating his employees as he did.

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets Thematic Essay
The Thematic Analysis of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Harry Potter and the
Chamber of Secrets is the second one of this series of novels. This time Harry still encountered
the menace of Voldemort. Word came that the legendary chamber of secrets would be opened by
the heir of the Slytherin family. Worse still, Harry was suspected because of his grasp of
Parseltongue. Hogwarts was confronted with the crisis of closedown. Ultimately Harry found the

They both mastered Parseltongue before they became sorcerers. In point of fact, the grasp of
Parseltongue is a distinguished character of Salazar Slytherin, one of the great four of Hogwarts
School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. And the badge of Slytherin is a snake. What will happen if a
sorcerer masters Parseltongue? Let us look into another example. The Gaunt family acquired this
capability. Although they were no longer glorious, they were boastful and conceited, just deriding
others as they please. They abused their privileged status to contravene the laws in the magic world
arbitrarily. Snakes denote the distinctive talents and nobility in the magic world. Additionally, the
sorting hat allocated Riddle to Slytherin, and he intended to assign Harry to there, too. Both of them
could attach their mind to snakes and perceive outside via the eyes of snakes. From the perspective

Representation Of Women In Taming Of The Shrew By William...
Written in the late 16th century during the Elizabethan era, the Taming of the Shrew is a play by
William Shakespeare. It tells the narrative of Katherine, a termagant, rebellious shrew , daughter to
father Baptista and sister to unassuming, obedient, attractive Bianca. In it, she is subjected to
methods intended to restrain her aggressive behaviour, or effectively tame her, by Petruchio, a
bachelor on the prowl for wealthy women.
Having been performed throughout the centuries to create a historical assortment of varied
adaptations, versions of Taming of the Shrew have changed in accordance with time periods and
related shifting social expectations and culture. Discussed by literary academia extensively, a
particular manifestation reflecting such changes among this cohort of portrayals is the
representation of women. Notably, a clear trend about the societal attitudes at the time of
presentation of versions can be assumed by examining and comparing the depiction of women in
two adaptations; the Globe Theatre s directed by Toby Frow in 2012, a production expressing social
norms from the Elizabethan era, and the BBC s ShakespeaRE told TV episode directed by David
Richards (BBC Retold), set in modern times. The representation of women in these plays allow it
to be concluded that the social expectations of women have progressed from domestically and
professionally limiting to more supportive and liberal over time, with a specific focus on gender
equality. In spite of this,

Lord Of Flies By William Golding
In the Lord of flies by William Golding, the theme of civilization vs. Savagery is explored. When
a bunch of children are stranded on an island, the conflict between savagery and the rules of
civilization begins to split the boys into two groups. Throughout the novel, the conflict is
exaggerated by the two main characters, Ralph and Jack. While Ralph uses his abilities to control
the kids and be civilized on the island. Jack lets his impulses get to him and creates a group of
which act like savages. In the novel, the boys struggle to act civilized and follow certain rules.

In the novel, it says If I blow the conch and they don t come back. And another thing we can t
have everybody talking at once. We ll have to have hands up like at school. When everyone puts
their hands up to use the conch it shows that they are still maintaining their civil ways on the
island to try to handle the hard situation they are stuck in. Although, the conch was also used for
power by the antagonist Jack who showed his savage side when trying to get ahold of the conch.
Instead of being civil enough to ask Ralph to use the conch and stick with the rules, Jack used his
own group to try to do anything possible to kill Ralph. His savage instincts and human impulses
got in his way and overpowered his civility. The conch shell is a powerful marker of democratic
order on the island. As the conflict between Ralph and Jack deepens, the conch shell reduces in
symbolic importance. Jack declares that the conch is meaningless as a symbol of authority and
order. Due to this, its decline in importance signals the decline of civilization on the island and
overcome by savagery.
Another way the theme is portrayed in the novel is by the killing of the pig. When the boys first see
the pig, Jack gets hesitant to kill the pig because he was scared of killing the pig and seeing the
blood. In the book, it says, they knew very well why he hadn t: because of the enormity of the
knife descending and cutting into living flesh; because of the unbearable blood .

Explain Why College Athletes Need To Change
The Treatment Of College Athletes Need To Change
The NCAA needs to protect the overall well being of the athletes because they are the bread and
butter of the school and NCAA s income. The NCAA needs to start paying the athletes, allow the
athletes to receive money from an outside source, provide a stable living environment for athletes
who qualify, provide the proper nutrients the athletes need in order to excel on the field, and the
NCAA needs to ban colleges from pulling the athletes scholarship after an injury. The athletes can t
get decent jobs due to their overload schedule, and the food proportion the athletes receive isn t
nearly enough for their bodies to be healthy and run properly. Many student athletes don t come
from the best backgrounds, which means financial support from the families aren t always there.
Student Athletes attend big colleges to get an education while playing a sport they enjoy. Regular
college students have the opportunity to get a job that pays decent because they have much more
time on their hands, and sometimes that isn t enough. Now imagine how hard it is for athletes who

Summary Of Hungry Minds By Ian Frazier
Hunger is something we experience every single day, but the hunger I am talking about isn t what
you are thinking. Hunger is when something is missing or absent. It can be emotionally,
physically, physiological or spiritual. We are always hungry for something in life and as an adult,
you are never truly full. We are constantly striving for more and to fulfill all types of hunger. This is
perfectly described in the of Ian Frazier s article, Hungry Minds.
Frazier describes different people that are involved with the soup kitchen and they are all there
because they are hungry, some for food but majority is there to fulfill a deeper hunger. Father Rand
Frew was the one who suggested to start the soup kitchen because he wanted to feed his need of
starting something that would make a difference. I can relate to Father Rand Frew in this aspect
because I am too hungry for that. I want to make a difference and right now in my life, I feel

Little Rock Central High The Energy Stored in Various Foods Using a Homemade Calorimeter
The purpose of this experiment is to investigate how the caloric energy in food varies in different
foods and the correlation between high fat foods and calories using a homemade calorimeter. The
hypothesis is that if foods with higher fat content have more energy than nonfat food, then fatty
foods with more caloric energy will have higher measurements on the calorimeter, because fatty
foods have calories than other foods. As the content of fat in food rises the energy stored in that
food will be greater than nonfat foods. A calorie is a unit of energy though it does... Show more

With an excess of calories, an individual could become overweight or obese, because the calories
not used for used for basic functions are converted into fat for later usage. If the individual does
not participate in physical activity, the remaining fat will not be burned off, leading to excess of
fat (Abdallah, et al. n.d.). Too many empty calories, or calories with no nutritional value, increase
the chances of obesity and other weight related issues. These calories derive form added sugar and
solid fats (Weight Management, .n.d.) Solid fats refer to fats that are solid at room temperature
such as: butter, milk fat, beef fat (tallow, suet), chicken fat, cream, pork fat (lard), stick
margarine, shortening, hydrogenated oils, coconut oil, palm and palm kernel oils . Although
some are named oils, it is because they derive from plants, they are considered solid fats because
of the high concentration in saturated and fatty acids(Calories. n.d.). Fats are concentrated
sources of calories , and foods with added sugars or eaten in large portions can account to an excess
in calories and lead to weight gain (How Do I, .n.d.). So foods with greater empty calories that
tend to have solid fats lead excess in fat. For the purpose or this experiment foods that either are or

The Diary Of A Teenage Girl
The film version of Diary of a Teenage Girl, rather than condemning patriarchal privilege and its
attendant exploitations as the book does, is instead a very careful take on a young s girl s
exploration of her sexuality. The film and the book share the same premise but ultimately differ
on delivery due to their inherently different approaches to capturing Minnie s life as her and the
other characters are portrayed differently, so much so that is a cautious take on an otherwise un
barred novel. Rather than touching upon patriarchal privilege and its exploitations, the film
smooths over many of the more intense aspects in order to create a happy ending for itself,
which is fundamentally different than what the book intended. The Diary of a Teenage Girl is
based on the popular graphic novel by Phoebe Gloeckner published in 2002 and written as well
as directed by Marielle Heller. They follow the life of Minnie (Bew Powley), who is 15 years
old, in San Franciso in the year 1976. She lives with her single mother (Kristin Wiig) and
younger sister. Monroe (Alexander Skarsgard), is her mother s 35 year old boyfriend, and the
two of them carry on a secret sexual relationship. In the book, the text speaks for Minnie in ways
that she cannot speak for herself which leaves the reader to fill in the gaps; however, viewers get
no sense of this in the film, where what happens is taken at surface value. Patriarchal control of the
men in her life, such as Pascal and Munroe, still

these drugs, the use of crack and cocaine cannot be worth the actual consequences that are

More specifically, crack is crystallized freebase cocaine. Freebasing is where cocaine
hydrochloride is mixed with ammonium hyroxide ether. This solution is then heated, the ether
evaporated, and leaves freebase cocaine which is then smokes (Zonderman and Shader, 65).
This process is called cooking . The crack residue is a solid crystalline substance that is broken
into chips or pieces resembling gravel (Edwards, 76). Crack is the smokable form of cocaine,
and can only be taken into the body by smoking it. Smoking crack cocaine introduces it into the
system faster than other methods (Zonderman and Shader, 660. To smoke it, the crystalline chips
are either put into a glass pipe and smoked, or crushed and smoked in a marijuana joint. The chips
change to smoke when heated, which is inhaled, drawn into the lungs, and then diffused rapidly
into the bloodstream (Edwards, 77). The little sacs of the lungs are lined with fatty tissue that
readily absorbs the fat soluble crack (Mickey, 2). Circulating blood transports the dissolved
cocaine to the brain where it has immediate effect (Edwards, 77). Crack reaches the brain within
seven seconds (Mickey, 2). The effect, called a rush, is caused by the almost pure cocaine s assault
on the brain and central nervous system. The central nervous system responds by involuntary
movement of the muscles, increased body temperature, and an overstimulation of the pleasure

This event was one of the most important events setting the position for women in each book.
In every country around the world, women s lives are shaped by the influences of both society and
by religion. The Quran, Islam s holy book, mandates that women have the right to seek
education, choose their own mates, work, possess and inherit wealth or property, divorce, and
remarry (Hurley 76). So despite the Quran s clear support for women s rights and equality, why
do many people feel that Muslim women are oppressed? The hijab head covering worn by
Muslim women has been in the news on and off for some time now and has been a topic of many
debates. Here in America, one would feel this requirement on women as oppressive, but most
Muslim women feel that this is a way to be looked at not for their beauty, but for their minds. The
issues here is that people have a hard time differentiating between culture and religion, two things
that are completely different but have a huge effect on each other. People also have a hard time
understanding things that are different. Just because it is different than how we live, doesn t
necessarily mean it s wrong.
Islamic law condemns oppression of any kind whether it is towards a woman or in general (Islamic
social systems). However, there are many contradictions to this in the Quran. Take

philosophy s nature, value, and criticisms. The essay explains these aspects of the study of
philosophy in relatively different ways. The main idea for establishing value in his essay is by
explaining how it is best obtained, and its effect on other people. The essay continues with his
criticisms of those who opposed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It states that even though philosophy doesn t give us a certainty of true answers, it suggests many
possibilities which enlarge our thoughts and free them from tyranny of custom. He also supports
the idea that philosophy is beneficial because it enriches intellectual imagination . The essay
brings up the points of the practical man, and why they are at a loss of intellectual imagination
because they don t explore the unknown by viewing life as simple. As evidence, he uses an
example of mass disease and poverty of a society. The theory is that in those conditions, there
would still be much to be improved to produce a valuable society. Even if the society has the
proper food supplies, they need the goods of the mind (knowledge) to build a well governed
society. He believes practical men undermine that aspect, thereby explaining their lack of
intellectual imagination. The next argument is that philosophy saves us from convictions,
prejudices, and cultural beliefs. The affect that that has on a person is to open up a fresh
prospective with very little bias. He believed for this to be beneficial to people socially, by
developing empathy which helps you understand others points of view. That theory goes hand in
hand and gives a fine segway to his fourth and final argument of the freedom and equity learned
from philosophical contemplation reflecting in your personality (action and emotion). The

Cultural Practices between Men and Women in Nigeria
INTRODUCTION
Creative Media Industries are swiftly shifting its focus to solely digital media and opportunities
for creative writers are paid no attention but a Canada based Nigerian scholar at the thirty first
yearly covention of the Association of Nigerian Authors, points out that writers are the world s
window into a culture Adesanmi (2013). Novelists, biographers, historians, scriptwriters, and more
recently, bloggers are the constant that record and catalogue the culture, norms and trends of a
particular period or people. Through creative writing the culture of a group of people is revealed
and documented. This project is a collection of fictional short stories, it is titled Cold Heart and
Other Stories. The theme of these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People s lives and cultures are made up of coinciding stories, and the monolithic impression of
Nigerian women in literature still needs to be challenged.
LITERATURE REVIEW/CRITICAL UNDERPINNING In Nigeria, men expect and demand
respect, cultural practices show that the major roles of women is to submit to their men, raise the
children and feed them. From the precolonial period to present time, women s roles have advanced
but the Nigeria has always been a patriachial society, the concept of patriachy is crucial...because
feminism needed a term by which the totality of oppressive and exploitative relations which affect
women could be expressed (Humm 2003:200).
Colonialism ushered education and with time, women were allowed to be educated and became
exposed and aware of their rights but:
...women s rights and women s being have always been taken for granted, nicely and safely tucked
away under the bed of patriarchy. Silence was the virtue of women and passivity their garner, but it
was not always so. Traditional societies in pre colonial times had spheres of power and influence
for women in closely knit organizations that helped them maintain a

Gender Roles in Shakespeare
Gender Roles in Shakespeare It is a peculiar feature of Shakespeare s plays that they both
participate in and
reflect the ideas of gender roles in Western society. To the extent that they reflect existing
notions about the proper roles of men and women, they can be said to be a product of
their society. However, since they have been studied, performed, and taught for five
hundred years, they may be seen as formative of contemporary notions about the
relationships between males, females, and power.
Derrida was right in asserting that there is no outside to the text. His claim is that every text is
affected by every other text and every other speech act. As an instance, most of Shakespeare s
plays have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The contrast between the empowering masculinization of female characters and the paralyzing
feminization of males make the latter more appropriate to a tragedy or a satire, the former more
useful in comedy.
Rosalind speaks several times in ways that display an awareness of her (doubly) altered gender, for
instance linking boys and women as cattle of this color (III.ii.414).
In a more radical maneuver she addresses the audience as a male epilogue. If I were a woman ...
(AYLI epilogue) not only calls attention to the gap between the gender of the performer and the
gender of the actor, but demands that the audience recognize of the actor as actor. The tensions set
up in the play remain in suspense until Ganymede disappears and Rosalind reappears near the end
of Act V. All the complications surrounding Orlando, Phebe, and Silvius are resolved as Rosalind
gives up her assumption of a man s prerogatives.
It is easy to assume that dominant males in Shakespearean comedy conform to norms of
expectation and behavior, but it is more difficult to determine what those expectations may have
been in the Elizabethan era. Psychologists have examined the development of sexual awareness as
part of identity. Much psychological theory holds that the male child s initial awareness as Other

Disaster Is A Blind Killer
Disaster is a blind killer as it erupts and affects thousands worldwide. The severity of disasters is
expected to increase as a result of contemporary threats (biological, cyber, nuclear, etc.) in addition
to increased globalization and climate change. Yet sometimes government bodies, corporations, and
the like fall short in instituting preventative systems to avert a disaster, oftentimes causing the
general populous to be inadequately prepared should a catastrophe occur. Union Carbide s gas
leak of methyl isocyanate (MIC) at Bhopal, India in December of 1984 is an example of a tragedy
that could have easily been averted had the Indian government been more proactive in the
maintenance and enforcement of regulatory systems. Union Carbide s... Show more content on

The resulting gas leak killed more than 2,500 people that night alone, and would go on to claim
the lives of over thousands of others. The sequence of events of that evening is arguably the
result of operating errors, design flaws, maintenance failures, training deficiencies, and
economic measures that endangered the safety amongst the residents living nearby (Das 1996,
161). The decommissioned refrigeration unit, the faulty pressure level, and temperature
indicators of the MIC tank are examples of the lack of preventative measures Union Carbide
ignored. Additionally, the lack of implemented safety measures in place prior to the leak could
not have prevented a chemical reaction of this magnitude. In designing the plant s safety
systems, a water curtain for neutralizing MIC had been installed. Had a gas leak occurred, the
water would come on to dissipate; however, the water curtain was set to reach only a certain
height whereas MIC has the potential to escape far beyond calculated heights due to outside
factors such as wind (Bowonder 2012, 162). Union Carbide claimed that factors such as employee
sabotage not the faulty design or operation were the primary cause of the tragedy. An analysis by
Bowonder found that the failures were at the corporate level. These managerial failures are the
most critical and paramount if accidents are to be averted.

Fracking Vs Natural Gas Essay
Fracking is good for United States because it is used for fueling vehicles, cooking, and heating
houses and offices; unfortunately, fracking is destructive to the environment as it contains many
chemicals. Natural gas is lighter than air and dissipates in an accident, which makes it safer than
flammable liquid fuel. Most models of natural gascars get the same miles per gallon. Most spend a
lot less filling up the tank using natural gas than anything else. Natural gas costs about half the
price of gasoline or diesel. Another plus is the need to change the car s oil is less frequent because
of the cleanliness of the fuel. A regular gasoline powered car averages 32 miles per gallon while a
natural gas powered car averages 43 miles per gallon. The natural gas used to fuel vehicles is a

Natural gas has been found to be so much safer to use to heat a house than with an electric
heater. Heating a home with natural gas is much safer than heating a home with electric.
Electric heaters are known for catching fire, sparking, and burning. The most common thing
electric heaters are known for is shorting out and causing the electric sockets to burn. Electric
heaters are not always the warmest things they take a very long time to heat homes even if they
re not all that small. Natural gas heaters take less time to heat any sized home and heats the
home almost 100% warmer. Natural gas is 120 to 140 degrees warmer than any other heat, can
be used to heat water, and to heat your pool outside. There are many reasons to love natural gas,
it s easier to install and transport, its warmer, cooks faster, and is better to use as fuel. One thing
no one is told when natural gas is used is if it leaks and no one knows the chance of getting carbon
monoxide poisoning is very

Personal Narrative-Memoir s Shoot The Messenger
Yeah, I directed an episode of Haven in its last season. And that was something I had always
been working toward even before I worked on Haven. I ve shadowed directors as much as I
could and as long as I could in the hopes of one day getting to direct myself. And that actually
came to pass, and the experience was beyond my wildest dreams. It was just incredible. I loved
it. I was terrified and just completely overwhelmed the whole time with a combination of sheer
terror and pure joy. It was amazing. Then I assume that s something you d like to do more of in
the future. Definitely. Definitely. So in addition to directing, are you thinking one day you may
do some writing? Yeah, I ve been doing some writing for a little while now. And yeah, I would love

premiering on CBC in Canada in October. So that s something wildly different than the things
we ve been talking about. It s a dramatic eight part series about an investigative journalist who
stumbles on a case that quickly pulls her into this rabbit hole of political intrigue and murder and
sex and drugs and all sorts of dangerous and wild stuff. So it s something very different. But I
play an investigative journalist her partner and so the two of us are trying to figure it all out the
show starts out with a murder. And it gets more and more confusing and more and more
dangerous. It s going to be a pretty wild show. It sounds interesting, but of course, since it s in
Canada, we will have to wait to see it. Sometimes it upsets me because there are these great shows
up in Canada that we can t watch Totally. but of course, it happens that s there s shows here that
you guys aren t able to watch. Right. For now, Shoot the Messenger is premiering on CBC. But

Review of the Film Adaptation of The Butcher Boy Essay
Review of the Film Adaptation of The Butcher Boy The butcher boy was made into a film
adaptation in 1997 by Neill Jordan and author of the original book Patrick McCabe. The Novel
was highly praised and controversial. Many saw it as the best account of Irish childhood. Its time
frame is reminiscent of the early 1960 s. It is about a young boy called Francie Brady who
becomes isolated from reality and eventually commit s the ultimate sin of murder from this
isolation he is experiencing. He is the victim of a dysfunctional family and of the effects of
modernization in Ireland at this time and we soon realize that he has been raised in an atmosphere
of inhumanity. Both Novel and filmcover themes such as... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most importantly the film uses a lot of comedy which carries off very well in the film as it did in
the novel. As in McCabe s book, the film is not just a story about social victims in 1960 s Ireland
but a story that explores a society through the eyes of a child called Francie Brady in a time of
modernisation . The setting of The Butcher Boy was in Clones Co.Monaghan. Jordan decided to
have the characters also speak in a Monaghan accent which mirrored McCabe s. As this was a
film to be set in the accents of Monaghan all the actors who were not native speakers went to
considerable trouble to master this tongue .# Not only was Jordan bringing this mainstream film
production to Ireland but to Monaghan. This was a boost for any town or city to get the chance
to be in a blockbuster and For McCabe, it was a remarkable experience to return to his home
town with a motion picture crew in tow # The setting of the film was a very important aspect of
the movie in my opinion because if Jordan failed to pick a place as ideal as McCabe s hometown
then it might have been too outside the domain of the novel and may not have worked as perfect
as it did. The fact that Jordan went with Monaghan as the location of the film shows just how
close he wanted to get to the novel and to the writer. It would have been just as easy to keep all the
filming in Dublin or Galway and without the

Arsenic And Old Lace By Joseph Kesselring
Arsenic and Old Lace Arsenic and Old Lace, written by Joseph Kesselring, is a play that takes
place in Brooklyn New York. The opening scene takes place in September of 1942, in the
Brewster living room. It is the home of Aunt Abby and Aunt Martha Brewster they both may seem
perfectly sane, but we find out they are both crazy murderers. Together, they have 12 dead bodies
in their home. The women think they are doing their victims favors, because all of their victims
were lonely and death would be better than that. In the Brewster house, with the two aunts, lives

comedic relief during the show through his presidential behavior . Also living in... Show more

Falling action includes the cops walking inside in the middle of Jonathan trying to murder
Mortimer. The production comes to a halt when more cops and Mr. Witherspoon come in much
to Jonathans dismay. The Denouement is when all the papers are signed and Aunt Martha, Aunt
Abby and Teddy all go to Happy Dale. The theme of Arsenic and Old Lace is generosity is in the
eye of the beholder. All of the Brewsters think they are doing people a favor or helping
throughout the play when in reality their actions are not entirely generous. For example the
Aunts don t believe they are doing a bad thing by killing these people, instead they think they are
helping old men find peace. Aunt Abby expresses this feeling when talking to Martha saying, He
sat dead in that chair looking so peaceful remember, Martha we made up our minds right then
and there that if we could help other lonely old men to the same place we would (26). Though
Abby had her reasons for doing such a kind thing and she truly believed she was helping, she still
killed him. Mortimer also goes out of his way to be kind to Elaine. After Mortimer learns about his
family s history he tells Elaine he will not marry her because he doesn t want to burden her with
the inevitable fact that he will be crazy too. He tells Elaine, I love you very much , Elaine. In fact I
love you so much I can t marry you (55). Mortimer is trying to help

  • 2. Compare And Contrast The New England Middle And Southern... Introduction The New England, Middle and Southern colonies were the part of the New World which used to belong to the British. Although the colonies all had good things, all of the regions had things that didnВґt help them grow as a region. Some colonies had rocky soil for example. Having a good climate and a good topography is part of agriculture, having materials to work is part of manufacturing. If no one has the right materials than the most probable thing to happen is that people will not be as productive as with the right materials. Industry Each of the three regions had different types of industry. The New England colonies used to do shipbuilding activities, lumbering and fishing. In England the Pilgrims built the Mayflower. As a child Gloria read white American Literature, which later lead her to be a writer and publish great insight perspective writings.(encyclopedia) As Gloria got older, she was an advanced student in high school, she even graduated with honors.(encyclopedia) Later, while in college she faced an obstacle of finding her blackness after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.(encyclopedia).She then left to be a teacher for Jehovah Witness as a way to search for her purpose.(encyclopedia) Her whole childhood geared her towards being an author, and to write one of her most popular books The Women of Brewster Place . The Women of Brewster Place was an interesting and stereotype changing book. She thought that white American Literature were underrepresenting black women, so she decided to write. • 4. Escherichia Coli, Staphylococcus Aureus, And Enterococcus... Heidi Torres Ampicillin VS Inhibition Zone Growth of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus faecalis Introduction The variety of bacteria that lives in our world today is endless. With variety of bacteria comes a numerous amount of adaptations and enhancements that the bacteria develops, including antibiotic resistance. Escherichia coli, better known as E.coli, is a gram negative bacteria with several different types of clones with a variety of effects. E.coli often enters the intestinal tract as soon as an infant is born and some forms of it are not pathogenic but rather beneficial to the body(Kaper et al, 2004). When infected with pathogenic E.coli, the body often responds, depending of the type of pathogenic E.coli, with diarrhea, vomiting, upset stomach. etc. The rate at which E.coli is adapting, is creating a much more difficult job to find antibiotics that can eliminate the growth of this bacteria (Tadasse et al., 2002). Enterococcus faecalis is an infectious bacteria that often thrives in extreme environments (McBride et al, 2007). Enterococcus faecalis is an opportunistic gram positive bacteria that is usually found in the vaginal tract, intestinal tract or the oral cavity. This bacteria has a high resistance to many bile salt detergents, heavy metals, ethanol, azide, and desiccation, worries hospitals due to their variable tolerance (Zhang W et al, 2013). Comparing that shock to an electric chair, could you imagine the pain? In 1953, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who shared the same admiration for the Communist party, were both executed with an electric chair. Due to their involvement with the Soviet Union and transferring information from their connections during World War II, they were caught and executed. One hundred years ago, Julius Rosenberg was born in New York City. His parents immigrated from Russia. He was so fascinated by politics that he joined the Young Communist League as a teenager. When he attended college, he studied electrical engineering and soon after became an engineer for the United StatesArmy. Three years before Julius was born, Ethel was born on 1915. Being a part of many theater shows at her school, she always appreciated music and theater during high school. She started to be in support of the Communist Party when she was involved in a worker s union at her job, where she met Julius at a union event.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eventually, when the Soviets used their atomic bomb, United States figured things out. The United States government grew suspicious and investigated. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The objective was to establish a comparison between Polish migrants and birds such as pigeons. Birds are free and accepted in their micro communities, unlike Skrzynecki whom is isolated from belonging. The poet struggles to find a sense of belonging, using the technique irony to highlight his search for acceptance. Alternatively, another poetic technique can include imagery which is utilized in the line A barrier at the main gate . Skrzynecki thoroughly conveys the barricade that segregates the foreigners from Australian society. This leads to separation of the Migrants and the rest of the local Australian society being an example of racism at the poets time. The poet, Peter Skrzynecki adequately applies techniques to convey belonging in order to encourage society to accept migrants who have already experienced hardship. In summary, Skrzynecki uses an array of techniques to evoke the search of belonging to the readers. The poem 10 Mary Street by Peter Skrzynecki portrays a sense of acceptance to place as he feels a bond to his childhood home which offered him stability in a new environment . The poem by Skrzynecki conveys feelings to readers received from the place of his memories, in the home. • 7. Negative Effects Of Advertising Firstly, advertisements have negative impacts on young people. Media has played a major role in influencing people s perception of the differences between male and female expectations. For example, sex appeal in advertising can have negative effects on youth s self esteem, body image and can brainwash their young minds to purchase the company s products. Advertisements have always used sex appeal to gain attention and persuade people to buy that certain product. The media creates an unrealistic body image, and women are often shown as sexy, thin and beautiful. These images can pressurize young people to look and behave this way. For instance, youngsters that don t buy branded clothes or shoes may feel bad about themselves and might start to believe that they don t fit in the group. Advertisements can encourage people to buy products and make them think that purchasing and consuming are a major part of their lives. Therefore, advertisements can alter an individual s way of thinking and force them to believe and feel in a certain way. Secondly, there is a lack of equal representation in video games. Women are often represented as submissive and subordinate characters that depend on men. They are oftentimes categorized in four groups of characters like sex objects or prizes, victims, feminists and heroes (Dupon). For young people that are still developing their perception about women, these stereotypes can be detrimental and create a misrepresentation on women. Female roles in video games are presented as sexual objects and victims, but male gender roles are shown as heroes, villains and as overly aggressive and violent. In video games, female characters are excessively under represented and are mainly given secondary roles in relation to men. For examples Mario Brother s popular princess Peach Toadstool was present in the early video games, but the players could not choose to play her character. White supremacy took different forms, such as colonialism, slavery, and apartheid and has led to institutional racism. However, many African American veterans did not profit from this bill like their White Americans counterparts. Although the bill did not explicitly advocate racial discrimination, it was interpreted differently for both races and it somehow simulated the Jim Crow laws. For example, mortgage agencies and banks refused to lend loans to African American veterans after they returned from war, making them face poverty (page 308). The war on drugs has been viewed as a discriminatory process because it has led to the captivity of more Africans Americans than slavery. Literature Review Of Globalization Up to now the literature review has given an insight into the concept of globalization, and the understanding of several academics in the light of how this phenomenon developed over the years. It is then essential to cover what the economic benefits of globalization are, and how these may impact a sector or company. Most of the literature study s that have been written on the economic benefits of globalizationhave been after 2006. The reason is because the studies used the globalization index which was created by Dreher (2006) then further developed by Dreher (2008) again. • 17. Much Ado About Nothing Tragedy Tragicomedies, a type of writing or play, has been around for thousands of years. Much Ado About Nothing, a drama written by playwright William Shakespeare, exemplifies compelling characteristics that show up in tragicomedies. A few of the work s character s, such as Hero, Beatrice, Benedick, Dogberry, Don Pedro, and Claudio, provide multiple examples of what a tragicomedy has to offer. Shakespeare s dramaMuch Ado About Nothingis both a comedy and a tragedy due to Dogberry s monologue, Hero s exposure of her unfaithfulness, and Beatrice and Benedick s love. Beatrice later said to Benedick Kill Claudio...Not for the wide world. You kill me to deny it. Farewell (Act 4, Scene 1, 74). In her eyes, Beatrice believes that Hero would do no such thing as cheat on her future husband, and that Claudio must be murdered for his treason of calling her out in front of the crowd on the most important day of her life. The idea of a possible death to a main character created a sense of panic to readers and the thought of lifetime friends fighting to the death seems extremely inhumane. On the other hand, once the conflict is resolved and Don John is found guilty of the entire scheme, Beatrice and Benedick begin to joke about their love with each other and try to hide it from the outside world by stating Do not you love me? Along with using vertical integration negatively, Carnegie was a robber baron. A robber baron is a business owner who tends to use ruthful tactics to gain more wealth. Along with getting low pay, the workers were also forced to work 7 days a week for unbelievable hours. Overall, Carnegie abused his power of wealth to overrule his employees and used vertical integration to take from other industries, but without doing so he would not be as successful as he was. It tells the narrative of Katherine, a termagant, rebellious shrew , daughter to father Baptista and sister to unassuming, obedient, attractive Bianca. In it, she is subjected to methods intended to restrain her aggressive behaviour, or effectively tame her, by Petruchio, a bachelor on the prowl for wealthy women. The Diary Of A Teenage Girl The film version of Diary of a Teenage Girl, rather than condemning patriarchal privilege and its attendant exploitations as the book does, is instead a very careful take on a young s girl s exploration of her sexuality. The film and the book share the same premise but ultimately differ on delivery due to their inherently different approaches to capturing Minnie s life as her and the other characters are portrayed differently, so much so that is a cautious take on an otherwise un barred novel. Rather than touching upon patriarchal privilege and its exploitations, the film smooths over many of the more intense aspects in order to create a happy ending for itself, which is fundamentally different than what the book intended. The Diary of a Teenage Girl is based on the popular graphic novel by Phoebe Gloeckner published in 2002 and written as well as directed by Marielle Heller. In the book, the text speaks for Minnie in ways that she cannot speak for herself which leaves the reader to fill in the gaps; however, viewers get no sense of this in the film, where what happens is taken at surface value. Cocaine and crack are both dangerous, harmful drugs. Though pleasurable effects can be obtained from these drugs, the use of crack and cocaine cannot be worth the actual consequences that are inflicted on mind and body. The bad effects of these drugs, by far outweigh the good. Because crack and cocaine are so closely related, it is important to have a firm understanding of both drugs. Cocaine (coke) is made from the Erythroxylon coca plant, a coca tree that grows high in the Andes Mountains of South America. The coca farmers purpose is to pick and... This solution is then heated, the ether evaporated, and leaves freebase cocaine which is then smokes (Zonderman and Shader, 65). This process is called cooking . The crack residue is a solid crystalline substance that is broken into chips or pieces resembling gravel (Edwards, 76). Crack is the smokable form of cocaine, and can only be taken into the body by smoking it. Smoking crack cocaine introduces it into the system faster than other methods (Zonderman and Shader, 660. To smoke it, the crystalline chips are either put into a glass pipe and smoked, or crushed and smoked in a marijuana joint. The chips change to smoke when heated, which is inhaled, drawn into the lungs, and then diffused rapidly into the bloodstream (Edwards, 77). The little sacs of the lungs are lined with fatty tissue that readily absorbs the fat soluble crack (Mickey, 2). Circulating blood transports the dissolved cocaine to the brain where it has immediate effect (Edwards, 77). Crack reaches the brain within seven seconds (Mickey, 2). The effect, called a rush, is caused by the almost pure cocaine s assault on the brain and central nervous system. The central nervous system responds by involuntary movement of the muscles, increased body temperature, and an overstimulation of the pleasure centers of the brain. The high ... They are both religions believing in one God and each has a holy book, the Qur an and the Bible. Both books encourage belief in God and teach patience and honesty. They both also forbid lying and stealing and believe in some type of Heaven and Hell. So, if they have so much in common, why is there so much conflict between the two? This question is the exact reason why I chose to take World Religion. In every country around the world, women s lives are shaped by the influences of both society and by religion. The Quran, Islam s holy book, mandates that women have the right to seek education, choose their own mates, work, possess and inherit wealth or property, divorce, and remarry (Hurley 76). So despite the Quran s clear support for women s rights and equality, why do many people feel that Muslim women are oppressed? The hijab head covering worn by Muslim women has been in the news on and off for some time now and has been a topic of many debates. Here in America, one would feel this requirement on women as oppressive, but most Muslim women feel that this is a way to be looked at not for their beauty, but for their minds. The issues here is that people have a hard time differentiating between culture and religion, two things that are completely different but have a huge effect on each other. People also have a hard time understanding things that are different. Just because it is different than how we live, doesn t necessarily mean it s wrong. Islamic law condemns oppression of any kind whether it is towards a woman or in general (Islamic social systems). However, there are many contradictions to this in the Quran. Take ... It states that even though philosophy doesn t give us a certainty of true answers, it suggests many possibilities which enlarge our thoughts and free them from tyranny of custom. He also supports the idea that philosophy is beneficial because it enriches intellectual imagination . The essay brings up the points of the practical man, and why they are at a loss of intellectual imagination because they don t explore the unknown by viewing life as simple. As evidence, he uses an example of mass disease and poverty of a society. The theory is that in those conditions, there would still be much to be improved to produce a valuable society. Even if the society has the proper food supplies, they need the goods of the mind (knowledge) to build a well governed society. He believes practical men undermine that aspect, thereby explaining their lack of intellectual imagination. The next argument is that philosophy saves us from convictions, prejudices, and cultural beliefs. The affect that that has on a person is to open up a fresh prospective with very little bias. He believed for this to be beneficial to people socially, by developing empathy which helps you understand others points of view. That theory goes hand in hand and gives a fine segway to his fourth and final argument of the freedom and equity learned from philosophical contemplation reflecting in your personality (action and emotion). To the extent that they reflect existing notions about the proper roles of men and women, they can be said to be a product of their society. However, since they have been studied, performed, and taught for five hundred years, they may be seen as formative of contemporary notions about the relationships between males, females, and power. The severity of disasters is expected to increase as a result of contemporary threats (biological, cyber, nuclear, etc.) in addition to increased globalization and climate change. Yet sometimes government bodies, corporations, and the like fall short in instituting preventative systems to avert a disaster, oftentimes causing the general populous to be inadequately prepared should a catastrophe occur. The sequence of events of that evening is arguably the result of operating errors, design flaws, maintenance failures, training deficiencies, and economic measures that endangered the safety amongst the residents living nearby (Das 1996, 161). The decommissioned refrigeration unit, the faulty pressure level, and temperature indicators of the MIC tank are examples of the lack of preventative measures Union Carbide ignored. Additionally, the lack of implemented safety measures in place prior to the leak could not have prevented a chemical reaction of this magnitude. In designing the plant s safety systems, a water curtain for neutralizing MIC had been installed. Had a gas leak occurred, the water would come on to dissipate; however, the water curtain was set to reach only a certain height whereas MIC has the potential to escape far beyond calculated heights due to outside factors such as wind (Bowonder 2012, 162). Union Carbide claimed that factors such as employee sabotage not the faulty design or operation were the primary cause of the tragedy. An analysis by Bowonder found that the failures were at the corporate level. These managerial failures are the most critical and paramount if accidents are to be averted. ... The Novel was highly praised and controversial. Many saw it as the best account of Irish childhood. Its time frame is reminiscent of the early 1960 s. It is about a young boy called Francie Brady who becomes isolated from reality and eventually commit s the ultimate sin of murder from this isolation he is experiencing. The setting of The Butcher Boy was in Clones Co.Monaghan. Jordan decided to have the characters also speak in a Monaghan accent which mirrored McCabe s. As this was a film to be set in the accents of Monaghan all the actors who were not native speakers went to considerable trouble to master this tongue .# Not only was Jordan bringing this mainstream film production to Ireland but to Monaghan. This was a boost for any town or city to get the chance to be in a blockbuster and For McCabe, it was a remarkable experience to return to his home town with a motion picture crew in tow # The setting of the film was a very important aspect of the movie in my opinion because if Jordan failed to pick a place as ideal as McCabe s hometown then it might have been too outside the domain of the novel and may not have worked as perfect as it did.
