Through the Educate to Innovate Initiative, the current administration has made the case that
investments in STEM programs (science, technology, engineering and math) are essential to
maintaining the status of international competitiveness. But since the start of the program in 2009, the
importance of computer programming education is still being misunderstood and inadequately
addressed. Though the administration has tried to get more technology into schools, it s failed to teach

According to the Australian Census in 2011, 56% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population
in Australia were participating in the labour force, however, 17.2% of this population were
unemployed but seeking employment (Australian Bureau of Statistics [ABS], 2013). Comparing these
numbers to the non indigenous population, the percentage of the indigenous population in the labour
force is significantly lower than non indigenous Australians, with a difference of 20.5% (ABS, 2013).
Through my learning of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing, it was mentioned
that most indigenous people were unemployed or experienced poverty, the statistics allowed me to put
these statements into perspective. Upon learning this I felt quite shocked and alarmed at the high rates

The Mental Computation and Estimation subtest measures a student s ability to mentally compute
answers to math problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Isaac scored well
below average. Isaac had the most difficulty with this subtest and was only able to correctly solve one
problem. The problem that he solved correctly asked him, What is one and one more? Isaac correctly
responded with, 2. He was then asked, What is 4 and 4 more? Isaac incorrectly answered with 44. On
the next problem, Isaac was asked, What is 5 take away 1? Isaac responded with, 6. The following
