One cultural shock revealed in the novel is that the Igbo people kill and dismember twins, Nneka had
had four previous pregnancies and childbirths. But each time she had borne twins, and each time they
had been immediately thrown away (Achebe 151). All twins have a similar fate: to be mutilated and
murdered (SP10). This is done because they think that twins are a bad omen sent by the gods, and that
they have the power to bring significant destruction to the clan. For many cultures this is a foreign
idea that would not even be considered. This culture shock helps to explain the Igbo society and how
they believe in the power of supernatural beings. Chinua Achebe also uses the term Ogbanje to show
further how much these people believe in the supernatural. Ogbanje is a word used to describe a child
