The Tacoma Narrows Bridge, was also known as the Galloping...
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge, was also known as the Galloping Gertie, was one of the most famous
cause study of structure failure in the world. The idea for constructuring of the bridge came up in the
date back to 1889 with a Northern Pacific Railway proposal for a trestle. Then after a few yerars of
concreted and construction with the cost of over 6,400,000 dallors, the bridge was been build and
became the third longest and the most flexible suspension bridge in the world of its time of 1900s with
a toatl length of 1810m. It was designed as a twin suspension bridge which located between Tacoma
and the Kitsap Peninsula in United States. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge opened for traffic on July 1,
1940. After being in service for 129 days, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Prior of this time, most bridge design were based on trusses, arches, and cantilevers to support heavy
freight trains. Automobiles were obviously much lighter. Suspension bridge design had been
envolving into producing bridges of maximum grace, lightness and flexibility which actually was
more suited for carrying lighter cars and not heavier train. Unfortunately, engineers did not fully
understand the response of the suspension bridge design to these poorly understand forces. The second
reson was due to the excitation of torsional mode. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge was built with shallow
plate girders instead of the deep stiffening trusses of railway bridges, in which trusses allowed wind to
pass through but plate girders, on the other hand, present an obstacle to the wind. As a result of its
design, it was proved that the bridge was too light and unstable. And causing alloping Gertieaction
which were driven by the wind were being experienced by the bridge.
During the morning of 7 November 1940, the wind with around 56.3 km/h (35 miles/h) excited
bridge`s transverse vibration mode to its maximum amplitude of vibration of 0.5 m within three hours.
Then the wind started increasing to 67.6 km/h (42 miles/h). One supporting cable at the mid span
snapped causing unbalanced loading. The bridge response thus changed to a 0.2 Hz torsional

Superbowl Commercials Were Persuasive
Foundations of Government Superbowl Commercials Choose two of this year s Superbowl
commercials that you thought were persuasive. Describe each ad in as much detail as possible. What
were they trying to sell or persuade you to do? How did they try to do this? Then, compare the two
ads. Which was most effective? Why? Plan on your own paper. Write your essay answering the
questions here. Your answer The two commercials that I thought were persuasive were the Skittles
commercial and the Ford commercial. These commercials were in my opinion the most persuasive out
of all the commercials because they used humor, and they were still very persuasive. The ford
commercial being more persuasive than the skittles commercial I still liked them both equally. The
Skittles commercial was more about being humorous rather than being so persuasive but was still very
persuasive. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But the camera then showed that her family, a burglar, a cop, and a beaver were lined up catching the
skittles in their mouth as the boy threw them in.This shows that besides whatever else was going on
didn t matter to them because the skittles were so good. This commercial also had no narration until
the very end when it stated the skittles slogan, or catch phrase. The Ford Commercial showed different
scenarios of people getting stuck in bad situations and they couldn t get help, until ford came by and
rescued them. For example, there was a man with his car that was stuck in the snow and he was
waving his hands at passing vehicles trying to get them to stop so they could help him out. Then when
nobody came, the next scene with that man showed a Ford truck towing his car out of the snow. This

Changing American Culture
I remember looking at the pictures of me when I was just a little baby in South Korea. One of my
favorite picture was the one with a beer box on top of my head with a bag of Doritos by myside. I
started out my life with the culture of a Korean, but being adopted from my white parents and living in
American has changed my culture dramatically. Since the age of one, I have experienced and lived the
American culture. I adapted to the things that would seem different from the Korean culture. Growing
up I never took a notice to the fact I had white parents or that they didn t look the same as me. I Just
saw them as my mother and father. Throughout school I was quiet about the fact I had white parents,

It doesn t matter if you are younger or older, different gender, class, etc. There is always common
ground when communicating with others. In my personal experiences, I have found it difficult at times
to figure out and understand the way their culture can directly affect my culture. Going back to when I
was in high school, I had a lot of friends that had different cultural backgrounds. I felt privileged
growing up in a nice neighborhood compared to some of my friends that didn t have that opportunity.
Growing up my parents always wanted me to get good grades so that I could get into a good school
and be successful. One of the biggest privileges I have noticed was that I haven t had to pay for
college. My parents saved since I was a child to have enough money for me to go to college. When
talking to my friends from different cultures they see that as a privilege that they do not have.
Personally, I don t feel any responsibility toward those who lack that privilege, but sometimes I try to
figure out if I can help in

Data Collection And Analysis On Azerbaijan
Methodology
Overview
In this study research focuses on interviews with political officials, experts and secondary data
collection and analysis. The main part of the research stems from interviews in Azerbaijan 5
interviews, 2 interviews in Beijing, and two Skype interviews with international experts. Totally, I had
9 respondents to conduct my research. Of these, I did 7 face to face interviews, and other 2 interviews
were conducted via Skype video call. On January I travelled to Azerbaijan, Baku (to the capital city)
for gathering interviews and related important documents. Apart from interviews, my research focuses
on secondary data collection and analysis. With secondary data I mean various types of secondary
resources such as reports, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From this perspective this study has an exploratory character as well.
Sampling
As the topic is related to the political sphere many problems occurred during the sampling procedure.
The main focus of the study to identify the risk factors and their effects for Azerbaijan to be a
transport hub. Due to that reason I planned to do semi structured interviews with political officials,
scholars, from Azerbaijan to understand the officials points of view about the issue. Firstly, I started
with the help of Centre for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and I
did one of my interviews there. They referred me other experts who focus this study arena.
I would like to mention that finding respondents for my research was a little bit difficult. Because the
topic is related to political sphere. I was planning to do interviews with for instance, deputies of
National Assembly, senior advisors from Ministry of Transport of Azerbaijan, officials from Port of
Baku and so on. From this point of view, conducting my research I needed political official, scholars,
transport and logistics experts. First problem came from the topic. China s relationship with South
Caucasus, especially with Azerbaijan is brand new topic for scholars. Due to that reason finding
experts and scholar who has deep knowledge on this topic made problem for my sampling. As the
topic relates to sensitive issue limitations of answers during the

Herbert Hoover Accomplishments
Herbert Hoover was known as the Great Humanitarian and the Great Engineer. Yet, he was blamed
almost entirely for the Great Depression. Herbert Hoover accomplished much in his life, but it was
definitely not an easy journey; he went through the ups and downs of the learning years that paved the
path leading to his presidency, and he ultimately faced his fears. Herbert Hoover was born in the rural
town of West Branch, Iowa on August 10, 1874, to Jesse and Hulda Hoover. Herbert was born in one
of the three rooms in the Hoover s home. Jesse compared Herbert to Ulysses S. Grant; he was very
hopeful for his son s future. Jesse Hoover was the owner of a blacksmith shop in their small, rural
town. Herbert, called Bert, had two siblings, an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After two years at the land settlement company, Hoover started taking night courses at a business
school. Hoover learned from a Quaker math teacher about Stanford University, and he had a great
desire to attend there. Herbert failed his first entrance exam, but Stanford allowed him another
opportunity to take the exam. He was the tender age of seventeen when he began his engineering
studies at Stanford. Stanford was not an inexpensive school; Herbert worked several entry level jobs
to afford to attend. (Chang, 18 20) Hoover was very involved in the university s student government.
He was also the treasurer of his junior class. (Fausold, 5) During his time at the university, Herbert the
met lovely Louise Henry, often called Lou. Herbert later described her as, A symbol of everything
wholesome in American life. (Chang, 41) Lou was the first woman to major in geology at Stanford.
(Chang, 20) After graduating with an A.B. degree, Herbert took a job with the mining engineer, Louis
Janin; Herbert was asked to work on projects in California, Colorado, and Nevada. A year later,
Herbert Hoover got a job with the mining firm of Bewick, Moreing, and Company of London. While
working with the firm, he was sent on a two year assignment in Australia working on gold mines.
During his time in Australia, Herbert was made a partner with this firm; he was only twenty seven.

The Symbolism of Birds in Z.Z. Packer’s The Ant of the Self
The Symbolism of Birds in Z.Z. Packer s The Ant of the Self In Western literature, birds are often
used to symbolize humans. Birds anatomy, behavior, and perceived emotions combine to make the
bird a useful symbol of humans, their thoughts, and their emotions. Z.Z. Packer adds to this list of
more commonly used similarities between birds and humans by endowing the birds in her short story,
The Ant of the Self , with the gift of speech. By doing so, Z.Z. Packer highlights her use of a
squawking assortment of colorful African birds as a symbol for Spurgeon. The birds serve as a catalyst
for the story, giving rise to Spurgeon s and his father s trip to the Million Man March. As the duo
makes their way from Jasper, Indiana to Washington, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because of the supposed similarities between humans and birds, birds are a useful tool for authors
wishing to symbolize human emotions or thoughts. Mynott offers that birds are often distinguished
partly by the different human emotions they seem to be revealing (Mynott 282). He references several
examples of the use of human specific traits in the description of birds, such as kind, stern, and
astonished (282). It is not such a huge leap from the attribution of such human characteristics, to
anthropomorphic misdescription (282). The birds in The Ant of the Self are said to be looking as
though they [had] placed bets on who would lose Spurgeon s and his father s confrontation. While
Spurgeon is taking a stand against his father by ordering him out of the car and onto the shoulder of
the road, the birds curious glances are exposing Spurgeon s own thoughts. The birds, a symbol for
Spurgeon, wonder whether he or his father will go down in flames (Packer 95). The caged birds,
which are so capable of human expressions, are expressing Spurgeon s thoughts. ZZ Packer endows
the birds with a look of human quizzicality, having them glance from the nervous Spurgeon to his
angered father. Spurgeon wonders whether he or his father will win, and the birds, as his symbol,
express this. As a symbol for Spurgeon

Essay on Ethical Theories of Embryonic Stem Cells
Researching the future potential of embryonic stem cells is the new hot topic debate in ethics. The
moral objections from two opposing sides clash in a political and ethical battle of who is correct. Each
faction tries to define the classification of what deserves unalienable human rights. Likewise,
determining what is classified as human behavior such as sentiment, interests and pain has been the
ground on which pro stem cell research stand. Since these embryos share only genetic similarities and
no human characteristics, it is permissible to this stance to kill them in the name of medicine. On the
other hand, anti embryonic stem cell research believes that the human life begins at conception.
Consequently, the status of the embryo is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The authors opinion is plainly seen in the first paragraph, I argue for a compromise position that
accords respect to the embryo as a form of human life, but which is distinct from Kantian respect for
persons, (Steinbock, 2007). The first view is that embryos should receive the protection and rights that
all human beings have because they are genetically human. Steinbock counters this statement with the
definition of a human organism, an organism is defined as an integrated while with the capacity for
self directed development, (Steinbock, 2007). This classification of what a human organism is
demotes the human embryo as not human because the embryo has no heart, no brain and no organs. In
other words, it has no similar traits as a human adult. It has the capabilities to become a baby, but will
it ever become one? Another view, as described by Steinbock, is that embryos have no moral status.
Embryos have the same genetic makeup as humans, but they don t act or exhibit any human
characteristics. Steinbock states,
Morally, they are no different from any other cells in the human body. A blastocyst certainly looks
nothing like a born human being, or even a fetus, but more importantly, it has none of the
characteristics of a human person. It is those characteristics, such as sentience, consciousness, self
awareness, capacity for language, rationality, and moral agency that

My Symbol Of Life
Life is full of challenges and struggles, but that doesn t mean we succumb to them. You may encounter
many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter defeats, so you
can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it. (Maya Angelou)
When asked who I would consider a symbol of everything I want the decision wasn t hard to make.
My mother, Jan Birdsong, is my symbol because she has displayed self confidence, ethics, and
perseverance, which is all I dream to be. First and Foremost, Self confidence is defined by Merriam
Webster as having confidence in oneself and in one s powers and abilities. My mother has built her
self confidence through learning to like herself, cultivating a positive attitude, setting personal goals,
and taking risks to achieve them. Maintaining a positive support system through family and friends
has helped my mother keep her perspective in line with her goals. Furthermore, she chooses to
surround herself with well intended people who weigh in providing constructive opinions. Her sense
of pride represents independent, self reflection and fulfillment of achievements. Pride means
possessing personal standards that translate facets of moral character such as self respect, honor, and
dignity. Her pride demonstrates how she has pushed to accomplish her goals and her pride will not
accept anything less. The ability to accomplish something in the face of opposition is considered
courageous.

How did this all start? Who could have warned General Washington and his men? Plug in your

Ireland. This was about the same time North Carolina became a royal colony. She married William
Darragh, a family friend and member of the clergy, in 1753. They moved to Philadelphia a few years
later, settling into a large Quaker community. William became a tutor and Lydia found work as a
midwife. They raised five children, with four others perishing as infants. Quakers were known for
being pacifists, though the Darraghs secretly supported the rebels and their cause. The plot thickened
as British troops marched into Philadelphia in 1777. The following October General Washington
failed to recapture the city, and his troops retreated to Whitemarsh. The day after, Major John Andre
demanded the use of the Darragh s home for meetings. Lydia s cousin helped persuade them to allow
her to stay in her home, though the youngest of the children were sent to their relatives outside the
city. Not only could they continue to live normally, but spying on British meetings would be much
easier. The battle of Princeton was won in 1777 as

The Effect Of Fructose On The Aging Process
indefinitely on long lived molecules such as collagen and DNA. Evidence suggests that these AGE
molecules play a role in the aging process. The Maillard process is dependent on the reactivity of the
sugar involved. Fructose is much more reactive than glucose. In vivo, the rate of non enzymatic
glycosylation of haemoglobin was 7.5 greater, and the rate of protein cross linking (a marker of aging)
was 10 times greater, in the presence of fructose than in the presence of glucose. Therefore, it is safe
to conclude that fructose has a much greater implication in the aging process than glucose, taking the
glycosylation of haemoglobin as an assay for this. [1]
As a reducing sugar, fructose reacts with protein molecules to form toxic advanced glycation end
products (AGEs) to a much greater extent than other sugars, which appears to contribute not only to
the aging process but also play a role in the pathogenesis of diabetic complications in diabetic patients
such as nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy and others. Supplementing the diet of healthy male
volunteers with 3g of fructose per kg of body weight per day resulted in insulin resistance developing
in as little as six days. A study carried out in non diabetic rats fed a diet containing 68% carbohydrate,
provided as fructose, shows that almost all retinas from the rats showed pathologic changes that were
histologically indistinguishable from diabetic retinopathy. [1]

Braddie, The Main Characters And Summary In Lyddie
Lyddie, the main character in the book Lyddie, she goes to work in a textile mill in Lowell,
Massachusetts after her family and their farm goes into debt. Lyddie works with a young woman about
her age. Her name is Diana. Diana wants Lyddie to sign a petition, so that the employees can have
better working conditions. The better conditions would mean less pay for less time. Lyddie is trying to
save up her money to leave. The petition is to get fewer work hours and better working conditions for
everyone who works at the mill. Lyddie knows if she signs the petition that she could, and will get
fired and blacklisted by her company. Not just her company, many companies! Lyddie has to make a
difficult decision of whether or not to sign the petition. She is scared of losing her job. The only thing
she knows how to do is her job at the mill. She can only work. Lyddie should not sign the petition
because she could be blacklisted by the mill (and many other companies) but would also have
nowhere else to go. Though Lyddie was under extreme pressure in her work environment, it does not
support a good reason to sign any petition that could have her not working. After Lyddie worked long
and hard hours at the mill, Lyddie felt like a slave. She started comparing herself to a black slave. She
says, We are no better than black slaves . This shows us that Lyddie works so much for such little pay,
that she compares herself to a slave that get little to no pay. Slaves are thought

Italian Influence On The High Renaissance
Like previously mentioned in the class, I have an intense interest for Italian art since I have been in
contact with it since birth. Because of this I would like to explore the High Renaissance since I feel
experienced and comfortable with this art period. The High Renaissance, or the Italian Renaissance,
lasted from 1330 to 1550 with Florence, Italy being the birthplace of it all. In the following essay I
would like to discuss Neo Platonists, which was the dominant philosophy so to speak at the time.
Secondly, I will talk about the Medici family and their influence during this period. Lastly, I will
discuss various Renaissance men such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael because they
were the people who shaped and defined the period. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Rise Of Japan During The 19th Century
The relationship between the two nations has been noted by many scholars that there is a noticeable
affront that has been built between the youth of the Japanese and the youth of the Chinese, which
began in the 19th century when Japan began its rise to power in East Asia (Westad, 2013). The rise of
Japan during the 19th century was seen as a slap in the face to the Chinese, who believed that they
should be in control of East Asia that they were supposed to be the chosen nation, the leader of East
Asia. These ideologies were said to be passed down from one generation to the next beginning under
the leadership of Mao Zedong, and the founders of the Chinese Communist Party to the today
(Westad, 2013).
These ideologies have led too many Chinese regarding the wealth made by the Japanese, and Japan s
relationships with the United States as ill gotten gains; Japan is currently the main Asian ally for the
US (Westad, 2013). The belief was that wealth of the Japanese was meant for the Chinese and as
history has progressed forward the belief has created a rife between the two nations that can be felt
more now than it did when the nations were at war in 1937 (Westad, 2013). Ultimately, the Chinese
Japanese rife came to a head when Japan rose to power during the 19th century, and incited a war due
to their greed and expansionism. The position as the East Asian superpower was and still is regarded
as the true position of power for the Chinese and has created a new dynamic as China

Disadvantages Of Dental Veneers
 Veneers
Each one of us is seeking for an attractive perfect smile which can be obtained by several procedures
one of them is veneers, which most of people call it Hollywood smile . Dental veneer is a thin layer of
ceramic material placed over a tooth, either for protection to compensate damage, or for whitening.
The procedure goes as the following, if a specific tooth is discolored, damaged or chipped. One layer
of the enamel is taken off, and a ceramic material veneer such as porcelain is placed over the tooth.
The patients get to choose color, size and shape of the veneer that they prefer. Veneers have different
thicknesses that can be fitted to help them appear straighter which varies from one person to another

 Expert home bleaching
Bleaching is the simplest and most stable treatment in aesthetic dentistry; it was first introduced in the
year 1989. Clinical studies have shown that a brighter smile can be obtained by using hydrogen
peroxide (H2O2) of 10% concentration repeatedly over a period of time which varies from several
days to weeks to obtain satisfying results depending on the discoloration of the teeth. At home
bleaching is based on effective bleaching agents that are mainly made up of hydrogen peroxide since
its known for its powerful oxidation property.
An example of over the counter/at home bleaching kits is the use of hydrogen peroxide gel or paste
that s applied in a custom fitted tray that is placed over the teeth for a specific period of time.
An alternative to tray based kits would be the whitening strips that are offered by different brands such
as (crest) and many others, the idea behind strips is using a flexible polyethene strip that has a layer of
hydrogen peroxide gel and then is fixed to the anterior of the teeth for approximately 30 minutes twice
a day over a 14 day period.

Essay about Marriott Rooms Forecasting
Marriott Rooms Forecasting Executive Summary In the case of the Hamilton hotel, Snow needs to
make a decision as to if 60 additional rooms reservations should be accepted which could lead to
overbooking (Weatherford Bodily,1990). It is a problem of capacity utilization that is being faced in
this particular case where revenue maximization is aimed while minimizing customer dissatisfaction.
In this report the case is put forward and various methods have been chosen to come to a sensible
conclusion. Firstly the raw data provided is used and the exponential smoothing model (ESM) is used

has to obtain the forecast of adjusted pickup ratio, which can be multiplied, to the Saturday DOW
Index to obtain the unadjusted pickup ratio. Here is is trying to eliminate the DOW effect that exists

Causes Of The Strike Of 1877
The Great Railroad Strike of 1877 manifested into the first of a series of labor strikes in the United
States and the first general strike of the nation. Working on the railroads, labor workers already had
poor working conditions and low wages. However, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B O) had made
its second wage cut in the past eight months; both cuts by ten percent. In response to this, labor
workers refused to allow any freight trains to roll in and out of the station until the restoration of their
original wages. The railroad strikers included individuals from railroad workers to other labor
sympathizers alike. The Great Strike of 1877 succeeded for the labor economy because of the large
number of labor supporters, the overpowering of the militia, and the power of initiative from the
people. Several citizens supported the laborers because of the dangers their jobs came with and their
impact on the overall economy of the United States. The strikers refused to restart the trains, so the B
O company employed new men to restart the trains, however, the strikers immediately interfered.
When the police went to protect the new men, the strikers were, reinforced by a large body of citizens,
swelling the crowd till it reached the proportions of a large mob ( Serious Strike ). The citizens were
more willing to aid the strikers than the local police and militia. The locals agreed with the strikers
because they were willing to go against their own militia. According

George Orwell s Politics And The English Language
In his essay Politics and the English Language, George Orwell argues that the English language
becomes ugly and inaccurate because our thoughts are foolish, but the slovenliness of our language
makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts. Orwell stresses the need to fight against lazy and vague
language. To make his argument, Orwell separates proper use of language devices. He uses a simile
that enhances the old fashioned trends with the modern age trends. The abuse of language is a
sentimental archaism, like preferring candles to electric light or hansom cabs to aeroplanes. The
English language can be old fashioned and trendy at the same time. A certain group of people may use
a word simply because someone of higher status made it sound elegant. Trends are followed by bad
habits. Therefore, a trend may cause a domino effect. Orwell argues that in modern language, ... Show

In answering the claim that the heterogeneity of art cinema makes a mockery of the attempts that have
been made to treat it as a distinct genre , I felt it important to choose readings that I felt tried to deal
with the elements of art cinema in a wider sense as opposed to focusing solely on a particular
film/director or country. With this in mind the readings I found most apt for this task were, Art Cinema
by Geoffrey Nowell Smith whose essay the topic arose from, The Art Cinema as Mode of Film
Practice by David Bordwell, The French New Wave by T Jefferson Kline and finally The European
Art Movie by Thomas Elsaesser. The films I have decided to apply these readings to are Vivre sa Vie
(Godard, 1962) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The essay begins and ends by discussing Ingmar Bergman specifically, which while interesting and at
times relevant, is for the most part superfluous in directly dealing with the topic at hand. The mid
section of the essay I believe however is acutely pertinent. Elsaesser moves from his original specific
focus on Bergman and extends it to European and thus art cinema. He raises the issue of the perceived
notion of American (classical) cinema versus European (deviant) cinema. In addressing this issue
Elsaesser breaks down the commonalities within each respective cinema. It is in this breakdown that I
found this essay not only helpful but also intriguing in it s novel approach to the topic. He provides the
crudest definition of the supposed opposing cinemas as Quick Hollywood and Slow Europe . In his
expansion of the slow nature of European cinema he shows his attentiveness to the components of art
cinema. Citing slow delivery of dialogue, less cuts and deep staging as trademarks of art cinema as a
whole. He then goes even further than these technical aspects and delves into the shared self conscious
plot structures, as well as the distinct lack of strong causality in these films. He suggests that art
cinema merely sets a different task to viewers than classical, be it discovering a character s true
motivation, piecing together a scattered timeline or a having to separate the real from the imagined . It
s worth noting that Wild Strawberries is a film that presents the audience with every one of these
tasks. I believe that this essay would not be only useful in answering against the proposed topic but
also provides a fresh view on the elements which art cinema is composed

Walker Evans
People, every day, are surrounded by architecture. Architecture is the careful planning, designing, and
construction of buildings (REF). Usually the architecture of a building accurately displays the culture
in which the building is located in. Although they are cultural symbols, they can also be perceived as
works of art. This perceived notion of art attracted artists of all different fields. Since the start of
photography, architectural photography was always a very common practice(REF). Three
photographers participated in architectural photography. These were Walker Evans, Albert Sands
Southworth, and Josiah Johnson Hawes. Although there were many differences in the formal elements
used between these photographers, a common theme can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The first of the formal elements he used was the use of cropping. In the photograph, Walker Evans
cropped out the background so the picture would only display the details of the building. This really
brought a strong focus on the intricacies of the building such as the brick layout and window design.
The framing was carefully manipulated in a way that the viewer cannot see either the street nor the top
of the building (MUS). One can conclude that this is because the mid portion of the building really
brought about the main theme of his photo. Most of the design may have been in the mid portion of
the building which really draws attention to the viewer s eye.
The second formal element that Walker Evans used was contrast. Walker Evans took the picture in
such a way that the angle of the sun created a dark shadow behind the windows of the building. Since
the picture was taken in such closed proximity, the contrast gave the photograph some depth. Without
the contrast created from the sun, the photo would have looked very flat. The sun also reflected on the
bricks of the building also creating some contrast within in the bricks giving them each their own

Summary Of Socrates Cave
At the beginning of Book Seven, in an attempt to better describe the education of the philosopher
Socrates begins to set up an analogy with an ascent and descent into the cave . In Socrates cave
analogy there was a group of people who were from childhood held in a dimly lit underground cave.
The people were kept there in bonds that were designed to allow them to only what was in front of
them by depriving them of the ability to turn their heads around. Also present in Socrates cave was a
certain wall or partition separating the prisoners from another group of people who simply walked
along a path carrying statues shaped after all that of beings and occasionally uttering sounds as the
others remained quiet. The shadows of the statues ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The final phase Socrates says the prisoner will go through will be his studying of the heavens by this
point he believes the prisoner will be able to himself come up with conclusions regard the sun as the
source of the seasons and the years (516c) and simply the cause for all he now sees and all he once
saw. According to Socrates the prisoner will eventually recall the lifestyle and the people he left
behind and began to feel a sense of pity for them but will cherish experience he has received on the
surface. He says that if the prisoner were to ever return to the cave he would face the pain of having to
readjust to the light in the cave and the ridicule of the prisoner who will see him as someone who has
lost sight of the truth instead of the newly enlightened soul he is. It seems to me that Socrates has set
up each part of this analogy to represent a separate part of the philosophers struggle toward truly
becoming a philosopher and achieving the study of philosophy. The cave itself seems to represent the
societal norms that will be forced upon the upcoming philosopher from birth. While the philosopher is
being brought up knowing only one thing as the truth he must find the strength to break himself free of
the chains that bind him to the non philosophical souls of society and begin to question what is known
as truth .

The Internet And The World Wide Web
The Internet is a unique place where all different nationalities, social groups and age groups with
different values and characteristics, meet and interact. All spheres of media are being represented on
the world wide web. Some of the relations are being mirrored from those present in real life, but the
internet was never the same. As with real life, not everyone on the internet is equal and there are
numerous differences between the users of this medium of mass communication. Even though the
inequalities are still present on the internet, they are subtler than those existing within the offline
world. Almost everyone has access, but how we benefit from it depends on our status, intelligence and
willingness to explore. Audience members are becoming important and active producers, being given
the tools, which bring them closer to professionals. Every internet user has equal access to an online
education, but an intellectually privileged group will make a more productive use of it. This can be
named as equality of opportunity. The argument cannot be defined into one side. Average people can
keep in touch and interact with celebrities, which would never happen outside the internet. They obey
the same rules and laws imposed by the services they use, yet are not equal, as famous people are
more powerful, being in charge of a huge fan base. Another important issue is a marginalization of
societies excluded from the internet outreach. The inequalities and equalities should also be

The Bluest Eye By Jacqueline Woodson
Although written decades apart, Jacqueline Woodson s Another Brooklyn and Toni Morrison s The
Bluest Eye both explore the trials and tribulations that young black girls must endure as they begin to
step into womanhood. While the burdens that the protagonists in each of these texts differ in some key
ways, one of the most interesting things that both Woodson and Morrison depicted was a sense of
difficulty in coping with these changes, and rather than having any semblance of mastery over their
circumstances, these young protagonists would instead project their emotions onto something else as
they try to discover what causes their suffering. Morrison s The Bluest Eye, for example, features this
prominently throughout the text as Pecola sets ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Junior, Geraldine s son, loathes this cat, as the text states, [as Junior] grew older, he learned how to
direct his hatred of his mother to the cat, and spent some happy moments watching it suffer (Morrison
86). This section not only serves as another example of projection from a developing, young, black
character, but more importantly, it also sets up the expectation for this cat to be loved. Later in the text,
Pecola finally goes to Junior s home to see the cat, and Junior promptly throws the cat in her face and
locks them both in a room (89 90). But as Pecola stays in the sealed room, something odd begins to
happen. She looks down at the cat, and the text gives us a description of the cat as black all over, deep
silky black, and his eyes, pointing down toward his nose, were bluish green (90). Originally, then, the
cat s eyes are described as bluish green until Pecola sees the light hit them in a certain way, then they
shift to blue. The text continues, The light made them shine like blue ice. Pecola rubbed the cat s head;
he whined, his tongue flicking with pleasure. The blue eyes in the black face held her (90). Notably,
the moment that the light changes the eyes of the cat to blue, Pecola begins to show it affection, and
the cat begins to show signs of happiness. Notably, past this point in the text, at least for the remainder
of when the cat is mentioned, he is always given the description of having blue eyes rather

Disney On Broadway Research Paper
Disney has taken the world by storm from movies to games to television and now even theatre. Disney
is no stranger to the silver screen or to your home television screens, but it has now made its mark on
Broadway stages around the globe. Since the early 1990 s, dozens of Disney films have been adapted
into Broadway classics. When one show stops, another one begins. Storming into its 24th year, Disney
on Broadway is one of the most successful theatre enterprises in the world reaching millions of
audience members in more than 40 countries (Tallarico). Before Disney revamped the theatrical
world, 42nd Street and the surrounding Times Square area was in total disarray. The 1980 s Time
Square was a place for drug dealers, hustlers, and prostitutes to seek haven in. It was not until Mayor
Rudy Giuliani invited major family friendly companies such as Disney to come in and revitalize the

audience and advance industry standards (Pressley). One of the biggest advantages of Disney on
Broadway is a guaranteed audience that is familiar with the storyline and music, as well as a large
company that is able to handle any negative reviews (Kearney). One reason for the increase in ticket
sales for Disney in the past twenty years is due to the safer environment after the redesign of 42nd
Street (Horn). Because of this, more children and senior citizens come to enjoy the shows. Tourists
make up the biggest percentage of those who purchase Broadway tickets. Therefore, commercial
theatre relies heavily on recognizable names to coax audience members into the theatres (How

to solve the engine knock by modifying the gasoline. Kettering thought that if he put red dye in the
gasoline would help to solve the issue of the engine. The red dye was not available at his workshop at
that time, so he used iodine instead. The iodine worked and solved the problem of the engine rather

In modern times, a couple usually does not plan to get married less than a week after meeting. Yet in
the small Italian town of Messina in William Shakespeare s Much Ado About Nothing, the young
Claudio and Hero plan to get married as soon as possible. That is, until Claudio is fed false
information that Hero is not a virgin and slanders her at the altar. During the Elizabethan era when this
play was written, most female roles and women in general were treated without respect as Hero was
and were only prized on their physical characteristics. Much Ado About Nothing was an important
play in the Elizabethan era because it dealt with social class boundaries and the roles of women.
Although the Elizabethan Era influenced theater greatly, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Elizabethan women were being taught that they were practically property of men. They could be
forced into arranged marriages in order to create bonds between families and were taught to be
dependent on their male relatives (Alchin). Social class and one s status in society could also coincide
with how they were treated on an everyday basis (Alchin). With these many events that would change
the world forever came changes in the theater that would change it forever, too. James Burbage, a
prominent Elizabethan actor, built the first Elizabethan playhouse and called it the Theatre (Yancey
25). The Theatre, built in 1576, would go on to set a precedent in the design of all playhouses of the
era (Senn). The building was probably round or octagonal and had no ceiling so as to let in natural
light since no efficient artificial lighting had been invented at this point in time (Yancey 25). Because
of the need for natural light during plays, most performances took place during the afternoon (Yancey
29). On the inside of the Theatre, the stage extended to be a raised rectangle that took up about half of
the ground floor (Yancey 30). Above it was a balcony on which acting could occur, such as the
balcony scene from Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet (Yancey 31). Finally, past the back end of the
stage was a concealed room called the Tiring House that served as storage for props and a dressing
room for any actors during a performance (Senn).

How Does The Sniper Build Suspense
In Liam O Flaherty s story The Sniper, a story about a sniper in the nighttime in a battle against an
enemy sniper in Dublin, the author concentrated deeply on dialogue, inner thinking and revealing
actions throughout the story to build suspense. In the beginning, the author uses descriptions to build
suspense. The evidence is in the first page when the narrator gives the reader a description of what is
going on before the story starts. It builds suspense because it lets the reader think of what everything
looks like and it gives a little background of what is going on so far. In the middle of the story, O
Flaherty uses inner thinking to form tension. The pieces of evidence are in the 1st and 2nd pages. The

Similarities Between The New England, The Middle Colonies...
In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed to find the Indies, but instead he found an undiscovered
continent which would soon be called the New World. The New World was full of fresh possibilities,
promises of treasures, and religious freedom; it was a place that could be called home. After years of
conquest and settling, four regions came about on the East Coast of North America: New England, the
Middle Colonies, the Southern Colonies, and the Chesapeake colonies. The colonists had their
similarities such as that they were ruled by England, though their government was the majority self
governed, they were mostly Protestants who did not agree with the Roman Catholic Church, they had
the same culture, and there was some religious tolerance. Despite these similarities, they were still
quite different. The New England region contained two combined colonies. There was Massachusetts
and Rhode Island, made to be the Massachusetts Bay Colony. This colony began with settlers differing
from religious norm. The religion was mainly Puritan, those who wanted to get rid of Catholicism
from the Church of England. On the other hand, the Toleration Act, declared in 1649, and made by
Parliament towards New England, forced their tolerance of other religions. Despite that tolerance, the
Puritans were still reluctant to accept the other religions causing colonists of those religions to travel
to further west for their own religious freedom. The Massachusetts Bay Colony s economy relied on

The Death Of An Ancient Greek Philosopher
Many individuals fear the thought of death given that they feel the uneasiness of not knowing what
happens when one is dead. For example, some fear things like a continuation of their sense perception
post death allowing the possibility of being punished for all the bad actions in their lifetime. Epicurus,
an ancient Greek philosopher of the Hellenistic period of 323 31 BCE, believed that death is the end
of our existence and thus argued that the act of fearing death is irrational (Letter to Menoeceus, 10.124
125). The Epicurean argument I will discuss in this paper is in support of him claiming the fear of
death is irrational is better titled as the privation of experience argument. In his own words Epicurus
claimed that death is nothing to us in his Letter to Menoeceus (10.124). It is important to clarify that in
the privation of experience argument Epicurus speaks on the state of being dead and not the process of
death. So, for the purpose of this essay, like Epicurus, I will accept the notion that death is the end of
our existence. In this essay I will present the privation of experience argument in my own words based
on my interpretation of his argument. I will also explain how this Epicurean argument is valid given
that one can live a happy comfortable life simply by having the right attitude about the state of being
dead.
Before I present my interpretation of Epicurus privation of experience argument I will state that
Epicurus held a hedonistic point of view

Gay Parents
There is the misconception that people of the LGBT community are unfit to raise children and be
parents. This, however, is not true, and there have been many studies done that prove the sexuality of
parents does not harm a child s development in any way. It has also been recognized that gay parents
tend to be more attentive, and are very helpful to the world when finding children homes. This goes to
show that, queer people are just as qualified to be parents as anyone else.
Some people in this world have this idea that gay people are bad parents. They say that children suffer
more in the care of LGBT parents; that children end up being less intelligent than their peers, and that
they have a higher chance of being bullied. Some people also believe that gay parents push their
lifestyle on to their children, and that it could potentially turn them gay. Both of these beliefs are
wrong, and only show how close minded society can be at times. There has been no correlation found
that says the sexual orientation of parents affects children negatively. As for children who are being
bullied for having LGBT+ parents, it only goes to show that people need to teach their children to
respect the differences of others. Also, bullying in general is an issue that needs to be addressed, and
gay parents should not be at fault for any teasing that may occur. These concerns that people have on
queer parenting, aren t actually very concerning things. It s been proven time and time

Dealing With Cancer
This actually was not the first time that I have seen this movie, but after learning about cancer for the
past few weeks, I saw the film and characters in a different way. Overall, I think the movie is a good
depiction of the emotional stages someone might go through after being diagnosed with cancer, and I
think it also showed the physical affects of cancer pretty well for Adam and his chemotherapy friends.
One thing I liked about the movie was that I developed emotional connections with the characters. I
felt anger at the ex girlfriend for being selfish and heartless, I felt hopelessness for Adam when the
results of the chemotherapy came back ineffective, I felt love for Kyle when I saw the Dealing With
Cancer book with notes and dog eared pages, and I felt pure joy when Adam came out of surgery and

Aluminum Bats vs. Wooden Bats

scores, higher statistics, and a percentage of danger to each and every player on the field. The NCAA
has changed the regulations of the bats so far and should look further into to making another change to
wooden bats.
High tech aluminum baseball bats aren t quite as new to the game as many people may think. Author,

Besides the velocity of the ball coming off of the bat there is also the reaction time to look at. Baseball
Rules Committee believe that a collegiate pitcher needs approximately .4 seconds to react and move to
avoid being struck...a pitcher is between 51 and 52 feet away from the point of impact between the bat
and ball at the time of impact (3). Dempsey also states that at 94 mph the ball will travel 52 feet in
approximately .371 seconds... with high power aluminum bats speeds well in excess of 100 mph the
ball will travel 52 feet in .354 seconds... at 110 mph, a ball will travel 52 feet in .321 seconds (3).
Baseball bats aren t the only things that are changing; in fact it is the aluminum bats that are changing

Foremost, to create and develop dynamic team communication, trust must be established. Depth of
relationships amongst a team, even with very poor technology to support an effort, has the ability to
succeed. Teamwork is more than a series of transactions. Teamwork is a series of engagements... If
you are able to establish trust as a team member, leader, or manager, you will be able to gain
consensus, agreement, and the ability to influence, (Jones, Oyung, Pace, 2005, p. 26 27). Keith
Ferrazzi, author of Getting Virtual Teams Right (2014) in the Harvard Business Review, states:
Trust starts with respect and empathy... leaders should encourage team members to describe their
backgrounds, the value they hope to add to the group, and the way they prefer to work. This allows
colleagues to form mental images of one another when they re later communicating by e mail, phone,

open system. An open system as Harrison and Shirom (1999) explains is product by which a whole
entity operates based on individually functioning parts simultaneously in order to achieve the system s
goals. According to Katz and Kahn (1971), there are essentially nine working components of an open
system. These nine characteristics are typically common to various types of open systems and can be
thusly applicable to my current organization as follows.
Importation of Energy: Based on the potential energy theory, the idea of importation of energy
recognizes that energy is delivered into the system through other sources or stimuli. Katz and Kahn
(1971) argued that no social structure is self sufficient or self contained (p. 21). Since the primary foci
of my organization stems to right wrong doings by bringing individuals and organization to the justice
system in order to rectify the situation,

Legalizing Marijuana Argument Analysis
Over time people continue to misunderstand marijuana. Many link it to several adverse effects,
however, the drug can have positive contributions. In 2015, Canadians elected a federal government
that proposed to legalize marijuana after four states, Alaska, Colorado, Washington and Oregon and
the District of Columbia legalized marijuana for recreational purposes. The question, therefore, is why
this is a good move?
Problem statement
At the onset, those who challenge cannabis legalization cite several problems, in particular among the
users. They argue that most of them exhibit a cognitive deficit and up to 15% of users will become
addicted (Leyton, 2016). Also, if one stops using the drug psychomotor impairment and milder
cerebral can persist for heavy users at an average of eleven joints per day for a decade (Bosker et al.,
2013). Alongside these many withdrawal effects, the use could also have some ... Show more content

The question, therefore, would be just how big is this danger? The truth of the matter is that in car
accidents, alcohol and other intoxication have a 10 fold increase while that of marijuana nearly
doubled with cannabis intake. Others associate it with greater schizophrenia (Hickman et al.,2009)
although the magnitude of the effect is small (Gage, Zammit Hickmann, 2013). In fact, the finding
reveals that preventing about 9000 people from the use of cannabis only protect one case of
schizophrenia (Hickman et al., 2009) implying that the effect of marijuana is minimal. More recent
studies reveal that the last thoughts linking it to psychosis reflect more in tobacco use than marijuana
(Gage, Zammit Hickman, 2014). Regarding risks, marijuana ranks eighth out of twenty possible
substances that produce personal problems than MDMA, ketamine, anabolic steroids among other
hallucinogenic drugs compared to amphetamines, cocaine, heroin, alcohol, crack and

Power In The Tempest
As English historian Lord Acton one said, Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts
absolutely. Regardless of culture, time period, or social standing there are numerous studies and
historical examples proving Lord Acton s claim to be true. Some of the most notable examples of this
are world leaders who assumed power and used that authority to abuse the population of their
countries. One instance where this applies is in England in the year of 1590 when a countess by the
name of Elizabeth Báthory de Ecsed known today as The Blood Countess takes power. During her 20
year reign she would trick destitute peasant women to her castle under the impression that coming
there to work as maids. She would then torture and kill the unsuspecting ... Show more content on

Brought to life with the knowledge of an infant, but the figure of a beast the monster was absolutely
clueless. Victor didn t have power by money or influence, but rather in the knowledge and the ability
to create the monster however he choses. Throughout the story the monster became a victim of the
choices Victor made. First Victor didn t consider what the monster s situation would be once he was
alive, then he abandoned the monster when he created it, and finally he refused to create a friend for
the monster which tortured the poor lonely creature. The power that Victor Frankenstein had was
knowledge, and amongst the excitement of that knowledge to create life he neglected to consider what
consequences for his creation may be. In the end this selfishness blinded him from the fact that life
would be awful for his outcast creation, and society wouldn t accept the monster. After failing to
consider the future, Frankenstein proceeded with his creation and the day the monster came to life he
ran away. Frankenstein let the fear of his creation drive him away in chapter 5, Unable to endure the
aspect of the being I had created, I rushed out of the room and continued a long time traversing my
bed chamber (Shelly, 5.199). Feeling no obligation to help the creature whom he had already

Subject of Family in Lessing s Flight, Hughes Mother to Son, Kincaid s Girl and Adrienne Rich s
Poem, Merced
Family as defined by Webster s College Dictionary can be one of many different people. Family can
be your parents, spouse, children, brother, sister, grandmother, uncle, any blood relative, or even
people who are not blood related that share that common bond (Webster 475). My definition of family
is similar to Webster s, but I feel that there is more to it than just being a blood relative or close friend.
A person s actions, beliefs, and morals play a major role in deciding who makes it into that family
group. Family becomes more of an idea or feeling, like love or hate, than just who a person is or

There are four different relationships portrayed in this writing. There is the granddaughter and
grandfather, father and daughter, mother and daughter, and a new bond between the granddaughter,
Lucy, and her beau, Steve. Although there is definite conflict between the grandfather and both his
granddaughter and his daughter, you can still see the elements of family portrayed in their actions and
beliefs. The granddaughter is ready to break free from her current main family and start a new family
of her own. This causes her grandfather to resent her, possibly due to the empty nest feeling since she
is the last one to leave the house and be married. This can be seen when he says to his daughter, She s
the last. Can t we keep her a bit longer? (Lessing 20). This shows the strong love necessary to have
that true family in a household. The mother knows that another step in her job is done and that it is
time to let go. The daughter is showing her defiance and desire to be a grown woman, to take that next
step in her life. Although she is bitter with her grandfather in the beginning of the story, she shows her
true love for her grandfather when the story portrays her crying as the grandfather finally lets go,
perhaps not wanting to be let go the releasing of his birds is a metaphor for the releasing of his
granddaughter to the world (Lessing 20 21). Steven shows his wanting of acceptance by Lucy s

The Tacoma Narrows Bridge, was also known as the Galloping Gertie, was one of the most famous cause study of structure failure in the world. The idea for constructuring of the bridge came up in the date back to 1889 with a Northern Pacific Railway proposal for a trestle. Then after a few yerars of concreted and construction with the cost of over 6,400,000 dallors, the bridge was been build and became the third longest and the most flexible suspension bridge in the world of its time of 1900s with a toatl length of 1810m. Prior of this time, most bridge design were based on trusses, arches, and cantilevers to support heavy freight trains. Automobiles were obviously much lighter. Suspension bridge design had been envolving into producing bridges of maximum grace, lightness and flexibility which actually was more suited for carrying lighter cars and not heavier train. Unfortunately, engineers did not fully understand the response of the suspension bridge design to these poorly understand forces. The second reson was due to the excitation of torsional mode. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge was built with shallow plate girders instead of the deep stiffening trusses of railway bridges, in which trusses allowed wind to pass through but plate girders, on the other hand, present an obstacle to the wind. As a result of its design, it was proved that the bridge was too light and unstable. And causing alloping Gertieaction which were driven by the wind were being experienced by the bridge. Due to that reason I planned to do semi structured interviews with political officials, scholars, from Azerbaijan to understand the officials points of view about the issue. Herbert Hoover accomplished much in his life, but it was definitely not an easy journey; he went through the ups and downs of the learning years that paved the path leading to his presidency, and he ultimately faced his fears. Herbert Hoover was born in the rural town of West Branch, Iowa on August 10, 1874, to Jesse and Hulda Hoover. Herbert was born in one of the three rooms in the Hoover s home. Jesse compared Herbert to Ulysses S. Grant; he was very hopeful for his son s future. Jesse Hoover was the owner of a blacksmith shop in their small, rural town. Stanford was not an inexpensive school; Herbert worked several entry level jobs to afford to attend. (Chang, 18 20) Hoover was very involved in the university s student government. He was also the treasurer of his junior class. (Fausold, 5) During his time at the university, Herbert the met lovely Louise Henry, often called Lou. Birds anatomy, behavior, and perceived emotions combine to make the bird a useful symbol of humans, their thoughts, and their emotions. Z.Z. Packer adds to this list of more commonly used similarities between birds and humans by endowing the birds in her short story, The Ant of the Self , with the gift of speech. By doing so, Z.Z. Packer highlights her use of a squawking assortment of colorful African birds as a symbol for Spurgeon. The birds serve as a catalyst for the story, giving rise to Spurgeon s and his father s trip to the Million Man March. As the duo makes their way from Jasper, Indiana to Washington, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because of the supposed similarities between humans and birds, birds are a useful tool for authors wishing to symbolize human emotions or thoughts. Mynott offers that birds are often distinguished partly by the different human emotions they seem to be revealing (Mynott 282). He references several examples of the use of human specific traits in the description of birds, such as kind, stern, and astonished (282). It is not such a huge leap from the attribution of such human characteristics, to anthropomorphic misdescription (282). While Spurgeon is taking a stand against his father by ordering him out of the car and onto the shoulder of the road, the birds curious glances are exposing Spurgeon s own thoughts. The birds, a symbol for Spurgeon, wonder whether he or his father will go down in flames (Packer 95). The caged birds, which are so capable of human expressions, are expressing Spurgeon s thoughts. • 8. Essay on Ethical Theories of Embryonic Stem Cells Researching the future potential of embryonic stem cells is the new hot topic debate in ethics. The moral objections from two opposing sides clash in a political and ethical battle of who is correct. Each faction tries to define the classification of what deserves unalienable human rights. Likewise, determining what is classified as human behavior such as sentiment, interests and pain has been the ground on which pro stem cell research stand. Since these embryos share only genetic similarities and no human characteristics, it is permissible to this stance to kill them in the name of medicine. On the other hand, anti embryonic stem cell research believes that the human life begins at conception. Consequently, the status of the embryo is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The authors opinion is plainly seen in the first paragraph, I argue for a compromise position that accords respect to the embryo as a form of human life, but which is distinct from Kantian respect for persons, (Steinbock, 2007). The first view is that embryos should receive the protection and rights that all human beings have because they are genetically human. Steinbock counters this statement with the definition of a human organism, an organism is defined as an integrated while with the capacity for self directed development, (Steinbock, 2007). This classification of what a human organism is demotes the human embryo as not human because the embryo has no heart, no brain and no organs. In other words, it has no similar traits as a human adult. It has the capabilities to become a baby, but will it ever become one? Another view, as described by Steinbock, is that embryos have no moral status. Embryos have the same genetic makeup as humans, but they don t act or exhibit any human characteristics. Steinbock states, Morally, they are no different from any other cells in the human body. A blastocyst certainly looks nothing like a born human being, or even a fetus, but more importantly, it has none of the characteristics of a human person. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it. (Maya Angelou) When asked who I would consider a symbol of everything I want the decision wasn t hard to make. My mother, Jan Birdsong, is my symbol because she has displayed self confidence, ethics, and perseverance, which is all I dream to be. First and Foremost, Self confidence is defined by Merriam Webster as having confidence in oneself and in one s powers and abilities. My mother has built her self confidence through learning to like herself, cultivating a positive attitude, setting personal goals, and taking risks to achieve them. Maintaining a positive support system through family and friends has helped my mother keep her perspective in line with her goals. Furthermore, she chooses to surround herself with well intended people who weigh in providing constructive opinions. Her sense of pride represents independent, self reflection and fulfillment of achievements. Pride means possessing personal standards that translate facets of moral character such as self respect, honor, and dignity. This was about the same time North Carolina became a royal colony. She married William Darragh, a family friend and member of the clergy, in 1753. They moved to Philadelphia a few years later, settling into a large Quaker community. William became a tutor and Lydia found work as a midwife. They raised five children, with four others perishing as infants. Quakers were known for being pacifists, though the Darraghs secretly supported the rebels and their cause. The plot thickened as British troops marched into Philadelphia in 1777. The following October General Washington failed to recapture the city, and his troops retreated to Whitemarsh. The day after, Major John Andre demanded the use of the Darragh s home for meetings. Lydia s cousin helped persuade them to allow her to stay in her home, though the youngest of the children were sent to their relatives outside the city. • 11. The Effect Of Fructose On The Aging Process indefinitely on long lived molecules such as collagen and DNA. Evidence suggests that these AGE molecules play a role in the aging process. The Maillard process is dependent on the reactivity of the sugar involved. Fructose is much more reactive than glucose. In vivo, the rate of non enzymatic glycosylation of haemoglobin was 7.5 greater, and the rate of protein cross linking (a marker of aging) was 10 times greater, in the presence of fructose than in the presence of glucose. Therefore, it is safe to conclude that fructose has a much greater implication in the aging process than glucose, taking the glycosylation of haemoglobin as an assay for this. [1] As a reducing sugar, fructose reacts with protein molecules to form toxic advanced glycation end products (AGEs) to a much greater extent than other sugars, which appears to contribute not only to the aging process but also play a role in the pathogenesis of diabetic complications in diabetic patients such as nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy and others. Supplementing the diet of healthy male volunteers with 3g of fructose per kg of body weight per day resulted in insulin resistance developing in as little as six days. A study carried out in non diabetic rats fed a diet containing 68% carbohydrate, provided as fructose, shows that almost all retinas from the rats showed pathologic changes that were histologically indistinguishable from diabetic retinopathy. The rise of Japan during the 19th century was seen as a slap in the face to the Chinese, who believed that they should be in control of East Asia that they were supposed to be the chosen nation, the leader of East Asia. These ideologies were said to be passed down from one generation to the next beginning under the leadership of Mao Zedong, and the founders of the Chinese Communist Party to the today (Westad, 2013). These ideologies have led too many Chinese regarding the wealth made by the Japanese, and Japan s relationships with the United States as ill gotten gains; Japan is currently the main Asian ally for the US (Westad, 2013). The belief was that wealth of the Japanese was meant for the Chinese and as history has progressed forward the belief has created a rife between the two nations that can be felt more now than it did when the nations were at war in 1937 (Westad, 2013). Ultimately, the Chinese Japanese rife came to a head when Japan rose to power during the 19th century, and incited a war due to their greed and expansionism. • 18. Causes Of The Strike Of 1877 The Great Railroad Strike of 1877 manifested into the first of a series of labor strikes in the United States and the first general strike of the nation. Working on the railroads, labor workers already had poor working conditions and low wages. However, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B O) had made its second wage cut in the past eight months; both cuts by ten percent. In response to this, labor workers refused to allow any freight trains to roll in and out of the station until the restoration of their original wages. The railroad strikers included individuals from railroad workers to other labor sympathizers alike. The Great Strike of 1877 succeeded for the labor economy because of the large number of labor supporters, the overpowering of the militia, and the power of initiative from the people. Several citizens supported the laborers because of the dangers their jobs came with and their impact on the overall economy of the United States. The strikers refused to restart the trains, so the B O company employed new men to restart the trains, however, the strikers immediately interfered. When the police went to protect the new men, the strikers were, reinforced by a large body of citizens, swelling the crowd till it reached the proportions of a large mob ( Serious Strike ). The Heterogeneity Of Art Cinema, By Geoffrey Bordwell Charles Pierse 11510667 In answering the claim that the heterogeneity of art cinema makes a mockery of the attempts that have been made to treat it as a distinct genre , I felt it important to choose readings that I felt tried to deal with the elements of art cinema in a wider sense as opposed to focusing solely on a particular film/director or country. With this in mind the readings I found most apt for this task were, Art Cinema by Geoffrey Nowell Smith whose essay the topic arose from, The Art Cinema as Mode of Film Practice by David Bordwell, The French New Wave by T Jefferson Kline and finally The European Art Movie by Thomas Elsaesser. The films I have decided to apply these readings to are Vivre sa Vie (Godard, 1962) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The essay begins and ends by discussing Ingmar Bergman specifically, which while interesting and at times relevant, is for the most part superfluous in directly dealing with the topic at hand. The mid section of the essay I believe however is acutely pertinent. Elsaesser moves from his original specific focus on Bergman and extends it to European and thus art cinema. He raises the issue of the perceived notion of American (classical) cinema versus European (deviant) cinema. In addressing this issue Elsaesser breaks down the commonalities within each respective cinema. It is in this breakdown that I found this essay not only helpful but also intriguing in it s novel approach to the topic. He provides the crudest definition of the supposed opposing cinemas as Quick Hollywood and Slow Europe . In his expansion of the slow nature of European cinema he shows his attentiveness to the components of art cinema. Citing slow delivery of dialogue, less cuts and deep staging as trademarks of art cinema as a whole. He then goes even further than these technical aspects and delves into the shared self conscious plot structures, as well as the distinct lack of strong causality in these films. He suggests that art cinema merely sets a different task to viewers than classical, be it discovering a character s true motivation, piecing together a scattered timeline or a having to separate the real from the imagined . It s worth noting that Wild Strawberries is a film that presents the audience with every one of these tasks. I believe that this essay would not be only useful in answering against the proposed topic but also provides a fresh view on the elements which art cinema is composed ... One can conclude that this is because the mid portion of the building really brought about the main theme of his photo. Most of the design may have been in the mid portion of the building which really draws attention to the viewer s eye. The second formal element that Walker Evans used was contrast. Walker Evans took the picture in such a way that the angle of the sun created a dark shadow behind the windows of the building. Much Ado About Nothing was an important play in the Elizabethan era because it dealt with social class boundaries and the roles of women. Although the Elizabethan Era influenced theater greatly, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Elizabethan women were being taught that they were practically property of men. They could be forced into arranged marriages in order to create bonds between families and were taught to be dependent on their male relatives (Alchin). Social class and one s status in society could also coincide with how they were treated on an everyday basis (Alchin). With these many events that would change the world forever came changes in the theater that would change it forever, too. James Burbage, a prominent Elizabethan actor, built the first Elizabethan playhouse and called it the Theatre (Yancey 25). The Theatre, built in 1576, would go on to set a precedent in the design of all playhouses of the era (Senn). The building was probably round or octagonal and had no ceiling so as to let in natural light since no efficient artificial lighting had been invented at this point in time (Yancey 25). Because of the need for natural light during plays, most performances took place during the afternoon (Yancey 29). On the inside of the Theatre, the stage extended to be a raised rectangle that took up about half of the ground floor (Yancey 30). Above it was a balcony on which acting could occur, such as the balcony scene from Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet (Yancey 31). Finally, past the back end of the stage was a concealed room called the Tiring House that served as storage for props and a dressing room for any actors during a performance (Senn). ... • 29. How Does The Sniper Build Suspense In Liam O Flaherty s story The Sniper, a story about a sniper in the nighttime in a battle against an enemy sniper in Dublin, the author concentrated deeply on dialogue, inner thinking and revealing actions throughout the story to build suspense. In the beginning, the author uses descriptions to build suspense. The evidence is in the first page when the narrator gives the reader a description of what is going on before the story starts. It builds suspense because it lets the reader think of what everything looks like and it gives a little background of what is going on so far. In the middle of the story, O Flaherty uses inner thinking to form tension. The pieces of evidence are in the 1st and 2nd pages. The first piece is in page 1, when the ... In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed to find the Indies, but instead he found an undiscovered continent which would soon be called the New World. The New World was full of fresh possibilities, promises of treasures, and religious freedom; it was a place that could be called home. After years of conquest and settling, four regions came about on the East Coast of North America: New England, the Middle Colonies, the Southern Colonies, and the Chesapeake colonies. The colonists had their similarities such as that they were ruled by England, though their government was the majority self governed, they were mostly Protestants who did not agree with the Roman Catholic Church, they had the same culture, and there was some religious tolerance. Despite these similarities, they were still quite different. The New England region contained two combined colonies. There was Massachusetts and Rhode Island, made to be the Massachusetts Bay Colony. This colony began with settlers differing from religious norm. The religion was mainly Puritan, those who wanted to get rid of Catholicism from the Church of England. On the other hand, the Toleration Act, declared in 1649, and made by Parliament towards New England, forced their tolerance of other religions. Despite that tolerance, the Puritans were still reluctant to accept the other religions causing colonists of those religions to travel to further west for their own religious freedom. • 32. The Death Of An Ancient Greek Philosopher Many individuals fear the thought of death given that they feel the uneasiness of not knowing what happens when one is dead. For example, some fear things like a continuation of their sense perception post death allowing the possibility of being punished for all the bad actions in their lifetime. Epicurus, an ancient Greek philosopher of the Hellenistic period of 323 31 BCE, believed that death is the end of our existence and thus argued that the act of fearing death is irrational (Letter to Menoeceus, 10.124 125). The Epicurean argument I will discuss in this paper is in support of him claiming the fear of death is irrational is better titled as the privation of experience argument. In his own words Epicurus claimed that death is nothing to us in his Letter to Menoeceus (10.124). It is important to clarify that in the privation of experience argument Epicurus speaks on the state of being dead and not the process of death. So, for the purpose of this essay, like Epicurus, I will accept the notion that death is the end of our existence. In this essay I will present the privation of experience argument in my own words based on my interpretation of his argument. I will also explain how this Epicurean argument is valid given that one can live a happy comfortable life simply by having the right attitude about the state of being dead. Before I present my interpretation of Epicurus privation of experience argument I will state that Epicurus held a hedonistic point of view ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Gay Parents There is the misconception that people of the LGBT community are unfit to raise children and be parents. This, however, is not true, and there have been many studies done that prove the sexuality of parents does not harm a child s development in any way. It has also been recognized that gay parents tend to be more attentive, and are very helpful to the world when finding children homes. This goes to show that, queer people are just as qualified to be parents as anyone else. Some people in this world have this idea that gay people are bad parents. They say that children suffer more in the care of LGBT parents; that children end up being less intelligent than their peers, and that they have a higher chance of being bullied. Some people also believe that gay parents push their lifestyle on to their children, and that it could potentially turn them gay. Both of these beliefs are wrong, and only show how close minded society can be at times. There has been no correlation found that says the sexual orientation of parents affects children negatively. As for children who are being bullied for having LGBT+ parents, it only goes to show that people need to teach their children to respect the differences of others. Also, bullying in general is an issue that needs to be addressed, and gay parents should not be at fault for any teasing that may occur. These concerns that people have on queer parenting, aren t actually very concerning things. It s been proven time and time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In this paper I am going to discuss the many similarities and difference between these two stories and reasons as to why, although so far apart in time, can be very similar in text. First I would like to discuss the similarities I found while reading these two stories. The obvious similarity is that both stories involved a flood that wiped out all life on earth. Both stories involve one man being spoken to be their respective god to build a boat to prepare for the flood (Genesis 11) (Gilgamesh 108). Overall, I think the movie is a good depiction of the emotional stages someone might go through after being diagnosed with cancer, and I think it also showed the physical affects of cancer pretty well for Adam and his chemotherapy friends. One thing I liked about the movie was that I developed emotional connections with the characters. I felt anger at the ex girlfriend for being selfish and heartless, I felt hopelessness for Adam when the results of the chemotherapy came back ineffective, I felt love for Kyle when I saw the Dealing With Cancer book with notes and dog eared pages, and I felt pure joy when Adam came out of surgery and finally got a girlfriend and a life that he seemed to deserve so badly. In 2015, Canadians elected a federal government that proposed to legalize marijuana after four states, Alaska, Colorado, Washington and Oregon and the District of Columbia legalized marijuana for recreational purposes. The question, therefore, is why this is a good move? Problem statement At the onset, those who challenge cannabis legalization cite several problems, in particular among the users. They argue that most of them exhibit a cognitive deficit and up to 15% of users will become addicted (Leyton, 2016).
