Goldfish Observation
During our fourth lesson on caring for goldfish, we were able to achieve the intended lesson
objectives based on student responses, behaviors, anecdotal notes, journal entries, and teacher
observations. I wrote and taught this lesson, while Ms. Meaghan was in charge of running one
observation station. She also took anecdotal notes about student responses and quotes during the
opening and closing of the lesson. This lesson was about caring for goldfish, and therefore,
required the use of goldfish to conduct the lesson effectively. Since the classroom teaching
informed me that the goldfish died, I bought six more and two aquariums for the purpose of this
lesson. This lesson required a lot of materials and preparation, but as a result of the... Show more

In order to determine if the entire class was able to reach the objective, Ms. Meaghan and I took
anecdotal notes during our observation groups about student s observations and quotes about
each basic need. In each group, each student was assigned a job, which was described on each
card. Their jobs related to providing the goldfish with their basic needs for survival. Three
students in each group were feeders, four students were planters, and four were water changers
(two added water and two replaced). The feeders each received a piece of scrap paper with some
food on it, and each student took turns feeding the fish. The planters each put a sprig of elodea
in the tank to create shelter. The two water removers, each took a small Dixie cup of dirty water
out of the tank, and the two water adders, put one small Dixie cup of conditioned water into the
tank. Through their work in their small group, the students were able to develop an understanding
of each need of goldfish, and understand how to provide it. They were able to have a chance to
actually provide the

How Urbanisation Significantly Influences Bird Communities...
INTRODUCTION
The most drastic influences of human modifications result from urbanisation, a progression
characterised by human disturbance, buildings and other artificial infrastructure (Hahs and
McDonnell 2006). Such modifications have significant effects on biodiversity, often with little
thought being given to the long term effects and ways of mitigating them.
In most cases, human alteration of the environment has reduced biological diversity by replacing
the native flora with new ecological spaces. However, urbanization, especially in suburbia, can
introduce many new resources (McDonnell and Pickett 1990; Pickett et al. 2001) which coexist
with the natural biota and increases diversity of avifauna in semi urban environments. It is ... Show

These sites varied from industrial/urban areas to native vegetation hotspots, parklands and
residential areas. At each site the standardised search bird survey method was used (Watson 2003)
with the boundaries of the designated patch provided, the area was searched for any birds present
(on ground, in trees or in flight). Each detection was recorded according to their species, number
observed and the time observed. This process continued until no new species was sighted for 20
minutes. Any observations about the site s vegetation, man made infrastructure and number of
large native trees (over 50 cm wide) were noted.
Then, a polygon was created for the shape of each site using Daft Logic (http:/
/www.daftlogic.com/projects google maps area calculator tool.htm) and converted into a KML file
(using http://converter.mygeodata.eu/) where the .shp file was opened in i Tree Canopy (http:/
/www.itreetools.org/canopy/index.php). The site s landscape features and coverage were
characterised according to the categories: trees/shrubs, impermeable surfaces, grass, water and
soil/bare ground with 20 random sampling points used per hectare. This was also conducted for
the surrounding landscape (a 250 m radius around centre of site). All coverage data was collated
and cross examined to explore the similarities and difference in bird diversity and richness.

A Research on Sexually Transmitted Diseases
A Research on Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) STDs are among the very significant and
preventable public health issues affecting the society and the globe at large today. In the
development stage of human beings, it is of significance that they involve themselves in sexual
activities. At this development stage, it is of note that adolescents mostly are at risk of
contracting STDs. This is in all cultures because sexual activity is highest during the adolescent
stage. This calls for early intervention to help them deal with this health problem. Educating the
adolescents to abstain, and use contraceptives in early sexual activities, are the most important
factors to deal with this issue (Oncel, Kulakac, Akcan, Eravsar Dedeoglu, 2011). Knowledge of
STDs does not have to influence the sexual behavior. Most adolescents are ignorant on how STDs
transmit. Lack of sexual information is the main cause of the increase in sexual activity among the
youth. Many male and female youth ignore the physiological and psychological development of
their bodies. This research aims to examine the sexual knowledge and behavior of adolescents
towards the subject matter, STDs, to determine some factors including age, sex, and family status
affecting the involvement of the respondents in sexual acts (Oncel et. al., 2011). Research work
reveals that the awareness of the adolescents about sexuality and STDs appears to be inadequate.
This mainly is because of the ignorance of health workers.

3.3 Leadership Direction
Leadership is important to survive through each and every kind of situation (Burrow, et al.
2007). The main leader of every company is the CEO, who is not only a president but also a
chairman. The strong leadership of the company is the reason that it has continued in achieving
right place in list of the World s Most Ethical Companies which is held by Ethisphere Institute.
The CEO is regarded several times by Fortune, Ethisphere Institute and Glassdoor, as world s
greatest leaders . Vice President very often said that the employees of the company are the reason
he comes to work every day and manage everything in perfect way (Starbucks News, 2014).
3.4 Motivation
The main reason behind the success as well as growth of the Starbucks is the high rate of hard
work shown by the workers. This is the reason that it was the first company who introduced the
right and benefits for the part time workers. Pensions, grocery shopping discounts, healthy
environment and stock options are the basic opportunities offered by the company (Starbucks,
2014). The company make full use of the intrinsic as well as extrinsic elements in order to keep
their workers motivated all the time. Different surveys are held to measure the motivation of the
workers. The company also believes in providing equal

Nature Vs Nurture As A Serial Killer
Historical Background
What causes an individual to become a serial killer? Bio psychologists believe that starting from
birth the human mind is a tabula rasa or blank slate, and the individual learns behaviors and socio
cultural norms from individuals around them. This concept of nature versus nurture was based
upon the idea that it is how you are brought up (nurture) that governs the psychologically significant
aspects of child development and the concept of maturation applies only to the biological. The
theory that explains the nature aspect of the nature versus nurture principle is called the attachment
theory, which views the bond between mother and child as being an innate process that ensures
survival. It is a biological need that has ensured the survival of many species including the human
race; because of the need to protect and be protected humans as a species has been able to endure.
It is also a psychological need to want to be cared for as well as care for others a study done by
Harry Harlow (1950s). The concept of nurture focuses mainly on the effect that the environment has
on the development of human beings and whether it is more important than nature. Several studies
have been generated to try and settle the ongoing debate of nature versus nurture.
Many psychologists agree that nurture play a greater part in the development of a human being.
Studies such as those performed on monozygotic twins (identical), who share the same genetics and
those performed

Racial, Racial, And Cultural Stereotypes In The Middle...
Nowadays, racial, societal, and cultural stereotypes are, unfortunately, becoming more and more
common. Whether it be about something as insignificant as every high schoolers supposed
immaturity, to something as substantial as a gender stereotype that denies people their rights, these
misconceptions are hurting people every single day. One popular group to stereotype recently has
been the Middle East. Almost everything people say about them is factually incorrect. The political
world does not help much either. Many biased or misinformed politicians say things that aren t true,
which then imprints society, which causes these misconceptions to bloom. Some of the most
common misconceptions are what defines an Arab, all Middle Easterns hate Americans and are out
to bomb them, and more. Middle Eastern stereotypes are misguided due to assumptions made with
a lack of information, biases in the news, and implications made by our government, and other
citizens only speak what they hear.
Many of the Middle Eastern misconceptions you hear most often are about Arabs. But while you
may think these misconceptions are about Arab culture, the misunderstanding is really about what
an Arab actually is. According to the American Arab Anti Discrimination Committee, or ADC,
Arab is a cultural and linguistic term. It refers to those who speak Arabic as their first language.
Arabs are united by culture and by history. Arabs are not a race. Some have blue eyes and red hair;
others are dark

Gullivers Travels Comparison Between Book and Movie Essay
Gullivers Travels Comparison Between Book and Movie It is common in today s media driven
society to reach into the past for inspiration and ideas. A trend has developed where original
works are transformed into other mediums. For example: books are turned into movies and/or
plays, movies are turned into weekly sitcoms, and cartoons will spawn empires (Disney). These
things happen so often that an audience rarely stops to question the level of authenticity that
remains after these conversions. Perhaps it is only when a project is not well received that people
begin to think of the difficulties involved with changing a work s genre. Using Gulliver s Travelsas
an example, discrepancies and additions in the movie can be... Show more content on

Cobwebs and dust obscure the sign at first, but Gulliver breaks down the barrier and wipes the
sign to reveal that he has found the Room of Answers. He enters the room and asks if the man
there can tell him the way back to England. The man turns around and Gulliver is looking at an
exact replica of himself. This second Gulliver states You know the way home, but you ll never find
it because deep in you heart, you don t want to to which the original Gulliver replies That s not true!
The scene described above appears to be quite critical to the plot development in the movie.
However, this appears nowhere in the original text. The viewer must ask him/herself why this
was added and the consequences of the change. The movie version of this story portrays
Gulliver as a travel that has been gone for eight consecutive years and had been searching for his
way home the entire time. He merely falls into unfortunate circumstances that prevent this return.
In the book, however, it is less clear that Gulliver desires to be home at all. He very rarely speaks
of his family and seems to have little emotion at being reunited with them after each journey or
when he leaves them again. The movie s alternate portrayal of Gulliver seems incongruent with the
added scene. Instead, this extra scene would appear to make more sense if the character of Gulliver
was depicted as he was in the book.

The Importance Of Pride In Fences By Agust Wilson
In history, a lot of great man have fallen do to pride and selfishness, In the bible it says Lucifer
clearly turned out to be so awed with his own particular excellence, knowledge, power, and
position that he started to want for himself the respect and transcendence that had a place with
God alone. The transgression that ruined Lucifer was self created pride. I used that lesson from
the bible to say that pride can lead to major life consequences. In fences by Agust Wilson we see
a perfect example of that when it comes to the main character, Troy is shown as a man who has
hurt the people who are closest to him without even realizing it. He has acted in an unsensitive
and heartless way towards his significant other, Rose, his brother, Gabriel and his children, Cory
and Lyons. Toward the start of the story, Troy feels he has made them proud. He feels this all
through the story. He doesn t understand the amount he has harmed them. In the first scene of
the play his oldest son Lyons come to ask him for 10 dollars and answers no saying You ain t
gonna find me going and asking nobody for nothing. I done spent too many years without (Troy).
Troy s biggest strength and weakness is that he always looks out for his best interest and doesn t
see anyone else s interest as important as his own.
Laguerre 2 Lyon is a musician by custom and thought rather then getting a regular job he d hone his
music. Lyons trusted that he would get something out of it. Troy

The Carpenter
First, through this story you learn that you do not have to be naive and believe everything that
others tell you. For example, in the story Nicholas took advantage of the carpenter, so he
planned to trick him in order to spend time with Alisoun, so in the story he said to Alisoun that he
will make fool the carpenter otherwise all his studies will be a waste of time (The Mi 112 119).
The carpenter was blind and in loveof his young and pretty wife Alisoun, also, he cared about
Nicholas, the student, however, the carpenter left his rationality aside and believes in the words of
Nicholas about the biblical flooding. At the end of the tale, the carpenter was tricked, the carpenter

him that he will tell him God s secret, he said that it s going to rain so hard that the world will be
flooded and everything on earth will die (The Mi 315 339) he lied the Carpenter about the
flooding and the same day that they supposed to wait for the flood, he slept with Alisoun, at the
end, he got burned in the low back by Absalom when Nicholas tried to tease Absalom with lies
again. Moreover, Absalom happened the same, he was in love of Alisoun, and he did not care
the fact that she is married, so she will try to seduce her too, one day he came with the idea to
kiss her, so the same day of the lies about the Biblical flooding, he climbs to the window of

him her lips, she gave him her butt, so he kissed her butt. So, at the end, both have the

Graffiti Art
If you were to go open a dictionary and look up the definition of art, you would see that it has art
as The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination... ( Art 2017) and Works
produced by human creative skill and imagination. ( Art 2017). From these definitions, graffiti is
art, yet in most cases, it s considered vandalism because it is done without permission of the
property. When graffitiis done in a designated place or with the permission of the property owner,
then it can truly be considered art. But even if these circumstances are not met, if the graffiti goes
beyond a simple tag, it is art.
If you walk through almost any city, the buildings, bridges, and any other available spaces are
seemingly filled with colors, picture, and words that are not part of the original architecture.
This graffiti, which is a mix of tags, stencils, pieces, and freestyle, seems to have almost taken
over cities across the world. Some of this graffiti, such as tags, are eyesores, but some pieces,
such as the High Line Love Is the Answer and Kiss murals in New York City, are sites that have
become iconic pieces of artwork. Unfortunately, pieces like these are also starting to be covered to
a seemingly astronomical rate, which is causing outrage among those who visited to them.
Graffiti is derived from the Greek word graphien which means drawing on a surface such as stone.
It was originally created as a word to describe the illegal drawings that ancient

Target s Ethical Theories
Analyzing this case with ethical theories of Utilitarianism, Deontology and Virtue theory will
determine Target s actions as ethical or not. These three ethical theories are described as
Utilitarianism is making everyone happy, Deontology is making rational decisions, and Virtue is
analyzed on courage, honesty, self control and fairness (Chonko, n.d.) . Target s letter to the
vendors was unethical in many ways.
So when Target sent the letters to the vendors demanding they give them the exclusive rights to the
products was unethical by asking vendor only to cater to their needs. This action forced many
vendors to look at how they could support Target but be ethical themselves to other customers of the
products they were supplying to Target and other customers. So reviewing this behavior by
Utilitarianism, Target was not making everyone happy including their vendors nor the customers

The decision to send the letters to their vendors was a reactive way to try to stop show rooming.
Target s managementdid not review the reason for customers actions instead they reacted by

Kantianism manner by making decisions irrationally and also demanding their vendors make their
decisions without reviewing the causality of the problem.
Lastly, reviewing Target s letters to their vendors by Virtue theory leads to the unethical behavior
by Target management. How fair is it to allow Target to monopolize the market by forcing vendor
to exclusively do business with them only or give Target the unfair advantage of pricing. These
actions by Target put management in risk of the public review as trying to cheat the consumers

Descriptive Essay On Going Down Hills
The sun was playing hide and seek with the moon, the moon was seeking. The trees standing
motionless with their fingertips covered in baking sugar. As my eyes broke the horizon of the
hill I felt something hit my feet, it was my stomach. Looking down the hill for 20 minutes I
came to a conclusion, I m screwed. As we sat there, the three of us, with our eyes crawling over
the hill to look down it once more, we got up. One by one. It was the first year my cousins and I
had decided to go snowboarding. Most of the guys had no real experience going down hills
while glued to a frictionless two by four. I was proud of the experience I had, a whole one inch
of it. Going on a small practice runway just to get the feel of riding before going up was what we
all started off on. My butt had became a close friend with the rock hard ground from all those
unexpected meetings when the body wouldn t feel like going the same direction as the board.
Feelingconfident from making a new friend and wanting to go up some actual hills, we left the
rest of the guys behind. I was one of the ones that felt like we were ready for some new friend
making grounds. Making our way to the line to get onto the chairlift we all laughed as we knew that
we were about to get hit with some reality. As the line slowly evaporated in front of me, I could
hear the screeching sound of the cables getting louder. Simply just walking up the the lift and sitting
down wasn t an option. I had to push off with one foot

Nasa Announced The End Of The Shuttle Program
Introduction On April 28, 2001, the Russian Soyuz rocket blasted off from the Baikonur
Cosmodrome in central Kazakhstan carrying its cargo and crew to the International Space
Station. Unlike any previous mission, this time there was a new crew member on board. Dennis
Tito, a wealthy American businessman, was the first private citizen to go to space. He paid
approximately $20 million to the Russian space program for a seat to the ISS and back. This
signaled to the world that commercial spaceflightwas a viable business, and there are people out
there that are willing to pay to experience it. NASAannounced the end of the shuttle program in
2011, and in 2012 it launched the final Space Shuttle mission. Commercial space flight took off
soon after that as private companies started up and began to fill the void left by the program. This
is a rather new industry focused mainly on transporting cargo to and from the International Space

other objects into orbit. Currently there are 39 companies in this industry in the United States and
these companies are not publicly traded. Each of these companies are at different stages of

The Woman Warrior No Name Woman Summary
In the first chapter of The Woman Warrior, No Name Woman, Kingston tells the story her mother
told her as a teenager about her aunt s untimely death. Throughout the story, many remarks proving
the empowerment of Chinese women are made. In the middle of the story, Kingston s mother stops
to say, Don t humiliate us. You wouldn t like to be forgotten as if you had never been born
(Kingston 5). This is seemingly demeaning, but is actually empowering. It shows that while
Chinese women are thought to be disappointments to be forgotten, they also have to power to
determine whether or not everyone will remember their name. Brave Orchid s words reflect the
notion in Chinese society that a womanhas the power to accomplish anything; if she doesn t want
to be a humiliation, she won t be, and if she doesn t want to be forgotten, she will make... Show

It shows that while men cast women off into roles of being incompetent, loyal fools, to have
around for their own pleasure, they are actually strong, resilient beings, who do not let any
struggle hold them down. Instead of speaking out against her rapist, like American women most
likely would, Kingston s aunt remained silent, unable to be shook by the terrors brought on by
her never ending rape. While this may seem meek and fearful, it is actually brave and powerful.
Kingston s aunt was an empowered woman, by not letting her rapist get to her, and by doing as
she was told, while continuing on normally in life. Most people would think that by killing
herself, she is actually not empowered. However, every action a person takes does not have to be
thought of as an empowered action for them to be considered an empowered person. Sometimes, the
most empowered people are the ones that slip up from time to time, and are not afraid to show their
vulnerability, because it is human and normal. Kingston shows this same quality herself in the next

We can change our fate by making right decisions even though fate is controlling us. However,
fate plays a part too in everything (Fate and Free Will in Sophocles Oedipus the King). Besides
that, human beings must be responsible for their own actions. The characters choices they make
throughout their lives led to downfall, Jocasta and Laius are responsible for their own deaths
indirectly, and Oedipus is responsible for his ruin. Once they commit something, they must admit it
like Oedipus where he admits his responsibility. Also, in the case of Oedipus, he did not find out
the correct thing before he did his actions, thus Sophocles trying to say that humans must get things

A Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition
SCADA/ Stuxnet Worm A Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system consists of
both hardware and software that collects critical information to keep a facility operating (Johnson
Merkow, 2011, p. 227). SCADA system vulnerabilities include the lack of monitoring, slow updates,
lack of knowledge about devices, not understanding traffic, and authenticationholes (Adams, 2015).
When an organization doesn t monitor the network, it makes it impossible to notice suspicious
activity. System updates are a very important part of protecting against vulnerabilities, even though
it may be seen as an inconvenience. The lack of knowledge about the devices is somewhat due to
the fact that the SCADA systems change over time. Therefore,... Show more content on

Rather, it suggests that the effects, and thus the risks, of cyber attacks are unpredictable (Manzo,

Essay On Health Disparities
Disparities in health care are significant in the United States and the root causes are multifactorial.
Social determinants of health such as poverty, socioeconomic status, access to resources, and
patient education influence health outcomes. Emerging data has shown health literacy as a
potential contributor to healthdisparities that impact health and lifestyle choices (Yee, 2017). Health
literacy, characterized as a skill set necessary to understand health information, involves
communication skills of both patient and health professionals as well as cultural factors. For
example, low health literacy has been shown to contribute to health disparities, especially in racial
and ethnic minorities (Hill Briggs, 2012). As a result of an increasingly diverse ethnic/cultural and

According to the National Assessment of Adult Literacy, only 12 percent of American adults have
proficient literacy in written materials and the greatest decline occurred among White adults and
persons with a high school diploma, GED, or vocational education (Hill Briggs, 2012). It has been
shown that sufficient, functional health literacy positively impacts health outcomes and influences
individuals overall well being (Friedman, 2006). Furthermore, health numeracy, or understanding
calculations, math concepts, and displays to make proper health decisions, affects patient s ability
to manage self care and chronic disease management (Koh, 2015). For example, a person s ability to
measure medications accurately, calculate blood sugar levels, and understand nutrition labels can
be affected by poor health numeracy. These findings suggest an interventional approach needed to
assess health information for all patients with varying health literacy and numeracy

Persuasive Essay On A Good Life
People have different images of how a good life in our consumer driven, constantly connected
and the globalized world looks like due to the discordant definition of what a good life entails.
Hence, there are sensitizing questions that we consider. First is whether people are the best
judges of their own well being. This involves subjective versus objective measures of well being.
Subjective perspective contains a self reported judgment where individuals express feeling
about themselves. Whereas objective measures of well being are based on external criteria. For
example, ways of living, fashion, choice of food and etc. The second question debates if a good
life is a moment enjoyed or a life well lived. A moment is understood as being present in the now
and mindful of the surroundings. For instance, enjoying the nature and time with their families.
Whereas a life well lived is based on different people s perspective. For example, describing each
day as their first day for the rest of their life. Lastly, is whether happinessis linked with virtue and
can one be happy without being ethical. This argues if people have to be compassionate in order
for them to be happy. The latter statement involves thinking of the study of principles that underlies
human behavior. For example, realizing that Nike is using child labor, would you still be happy to
purchase their products. It would be unethical to support child labor. However, some people believe
that the pursuit of pleasure is

How Does Jane Austen Use Consumer Culture In Northanger Abbey
Jane Austen (16 December 1775 18 July 1817) was a famous English novelist, who is eminently
known for her six novels. Those novels, which include Northanger Abbey also, comment upon the
lifestyle, norms, practices, and social existence of British landed gentry towards the end of the 18th
century. Apart from that, her novels show the dependence of young girls on marriage in order to
get a pleasant social place and financial security. In Northanger Abbey, she gives the social image of
different characters and employs different structures such as etiquettes, social behavior, estates, and
preoccupation with consumer culture and fashion to show their place in the hierarchy.
Though there are different themes, which Jane Austen, explores in her novel Northanger Abbey, the
idea of consumer culture in her time and related social culture appealed to me the most. It is a

In Northanger Abbey, Austen has shown that most of the characters value themselves in relation
to the material wealth they possess. In other words, the material wealth becomes a scale for their
identity and social image. Accordingly, Mrs. Allen is always preoccupied with this fear that she
might shred her latest ball gown. In another instance, Isabella constantly compares and contrasts
her attire with those of other women while walking with Catherine. General Tilney is another
example of a person who measures everything according to and for wealth. Even he values
people, not because of their innate qualities but the wealth that person possesses. These examples
show that people in Austen s time from rich class used to live for the sake of the wealth they
possessed and accordingly, their sense of self was affected and grounded in their material wealth

Evaluating The Reading Process Is Essential Because One...
When children learn to read, the process can appear to be straightforward. We tend to view
reading as a typical learning process that all children learn and can do with ease since it appears
that everyone learns to read in elementary school. However, when evaluating the reading process, it
becomes complex with specific skills that must be learned in a systematic organized method. The
systematic part is essential because one skill set builds upon the other. These systematic organized
parts of readingare divided into what is known as the Big 5. Reutzel and Cooter educates the
reader that, ?the following aspects of literacy have been documented as an instructional essentials
in the aforementioned federal research reports by the National Early Literacy panel, 2008, [where
is the list of the big five can be found are]: Phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and

there are a lot of reading programs and materials available, however they should contain Phonemic
awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension as key components. At the elementary
level, three observations were observed through the concepts of phonemic awareness, phonics and
comprehension to determine how this instruction is provided to the students. In addition, an
interview was conducted with a veteran teacher in Kindergarten to gather her insight into the

Bacillus And Clostridium Similarities
The proposed endosporulation pathways in Bacillus and Clostridium have many similarities and
differences which are summarized in Table 1. Their major similarity is their respective locations on
the bacterial cell. The ПѓE and ПѓK factors of both Bacillus and Clostridium are both localized in
the mother cell while the ПѓF and ПѓG factors are localized in the forespore. One difference
between the two genera is the stages wherein the activity of these sigma factors are detected. In
Bacillus, the activities of ПѓEF and ПѓGK are only observed during the early and late stages of
endosporulation respectively. On the other hand, the activities of all four sigma factors have been

However, upon the addition of INF55, a multidrug resistance pump inhibitor, the effect of
berberine against germinated spores has been enhanced. Furthermore, the addition of INF55 was
shown to be more effective in dormant spores as opposed to germinating spores. In conclusion,
the spores need to first be in the germination stage in order for berberine to take effect. On the
other hand, if INF55 is supplemented, even dormant spores can be affected by berberine (Wang,
S.). The effects of berberine should also be tested on other sporulating bacteria such as Clostridium.
As mentioned above, Bacillus and Clostridium undergo slightly varied endosporulation pathways.
Thus, it is interesting to know if this occurrence has an implication to the effectivity of berberine
against spores. Also, more studies on natural products with antibacterial properties, especially those
that can affect the highly stress resistant endospore, should be undertaken. These compounds may
target the sigma factors described above in order to disrupt endosporulation. Since vegetative cells
are more susceptible to antibiotics and other management procedures, disruption of endosporulation
by targeting the sigma factors may help reduce, if not eradicate the problems brought about by spore

Industrialization Impact
Industrialization
Industrialization had many different impacts in American history. One of the impacts that
industrialization had was increasing wealth in the U.S. Many business managers, and investors
/entrepunuer took financial risks of starting factories and they earned many rewards. By factory
s, the overall amount of goods and services started increasing, because of the fact that factory s
can produce goods much faster than a human. However men were still needed to operate the

Taking a Look at Stress
Stress can be defined as change in one s physical or mental state in response to strain and pressure.
A truly ignored side of stress is, it can be positively adaptive. positive mental stress can prompt
inspiration and test rather than uneasiness. Stress can help people in achieving their goals and
taking them through challenging situation but stresscan also become burdensome leading to
emotional distress or physical illness. It could be outer and identified with the environment,
however it might additionally be made by inward recognitions that cause a single person to have
tension or other antagonistic feelings encompassing a circumstance, for example, weight,
uneasiness, and so on, which they then esteem upsetting.
Negative emotional states, for example, emotions of nervousness and melancholy, could impact the
pathogenesis of physical sickness, which thusly, have immediate impacts on biotic process that
could bring about expanded danger of malady at last. Case in point, when people are under
ceaseless anxiety, lasting changes in their physiological, passionate, and behavioural reactions are
destined to occur. Such changes could prompt infection. Endless anxiety results from upsetting
occasions that hold on over a moderately long time of time, for example, administering to a mate

published his book called On the Origin of Species about his theory of Darwinism . This theory
was very popular between the years 1870 1890; it spanned until the early 1900s (around 1910).
Social Darwinism is any conviction or hypothesis that endeavors to clarify human culture as far as
regular determination specifies the hypothesis that people, ethnic gatherings, and so on make
progress or predominance as a result of inborn hereditary prevalence and a resultant upper hand.
The hypothesis of Social Darwinismsaid that the people who were feeble were getting smaller in
quantity as the more solid people developed in power. Herbert Spencer, a British philosopher and
sociologist, acquired Darwin s theory of evolutionand twisted the idea around to make his idea of
survival of the fittest connect with Darwin s theory. Spencer said: The wealthy and powerful were
the fittest, people endowed with innate intelligence, strength, and the adaptability that enabled them
to succeed in the competitive world of business (Visions of America).... Show more content on

Businesses were also affected by this theory by ways of being the fittest business which could
produce products faster and better for the economy and consumer. The smaller, more lazy
businesses were not fit to join the market and would soon tumble under and lose the business.
Social Darwinism had a huge negative impact on racial structures. The theory basically says that
whites are on top because they were, obviously, superior over the black population of the time
period. It also says that we should not, by any means, let the inferior blacks take over our so called

A Thousand Splendid Suns Character Analysis
In A Thousand Splendid Suns and First They Killed My Father, we find the three female characters
of Laila and Mariam, and Loung, respectively, in harrowing and dangerous political atmospheres.
Both of the political atmospheres described in these two books expose these characters to harsh
realities of war, abuse, starvation, and oppression; these characters must also come to terms with a
rising body count around them. From Mariam s perspective, we hear that there was looting, murder,
and, increasingly, rape, which was used to intimidate civilians and reward militiamen (Hosseini
253). Despite these despotic circumstances, and perhaps in spite of the physical toll they take, the
three female characters of these books exhibit extraordinary perseverance as a result of their
tumultuous surroundings.
The most prevalent and threatening theme that each character experiences first hand, as a result of
the dangerous political atmospheres they are exposed to, is starvation; we slowly see each
character physically diminished throughout their stories. Loung describes vividly to readers, I can
count every rib in my rib cage, but my stomach protrudes outward, bloated like a ball between my
chest and hips (Ung 83). Similarly, Mariam recounts how starvation had ravaged Laila s daughter
s body: Aziza s ribs began to push through the skin, and the fat from her cheeks vanished. Her
calves thinned, and her complexion turned the color of weak tea. When Mariam picked her up, she
could feel her

Speaking in Tongues
Speaking in Tongues: Real or Fake? Glossolalia or speaking in tongues is practiced by an
estimated 100 million Christians in the world today and the number engaging in this practice is
growing at a massive rate every year. That is approximately 20% of all Christians. What many
people are wanting to know is if speaking in tongues as seen in the Church today is always from
God or are there other explanations. Speaking in tongues has been practiced for many centuries,
but despite its long history, differences of opinion accompany almost all questions regarding the
phenomenon: is it sent from God? Is it of the Devil? Need it be a religious experience at all? Or is
it a result of a mental disorder? People from all different walks of... Show more content on

How Does Victor Delamonte Become An Independent Person
Several factors can change a person, whether it is a a turbulent childhood, the amount of wealth
one has, the people around one or the amount of time one has left. In Mitch Auburn s book The
Timekeeper, Victor Delamonte faces the same situations and becomes an independent but
conceited person. Victor is a very independent person; he does not like being helpless and
holding on to things. He hates it when he is powerless. When his wife, Grace, told Victor that he
should start using an electric wheelchair, Victor yelled I don t need it (pg.52). Also, when Victor
was on his dialysis for his liver cancer, he said he hated being stuck like this. Hooked up to a
machine to remove his blood. What kind of position was that for a man like him? (pg.59).

Gay Marriage in America
Gay Marriage in America Gay marriage has been one of the most common topic under
discussion, arguments and quarrels since couple of years in almost every nation of the world.
Looking deep down to the region of United States, same sex marriage or gay marriage has not
been legalized and documented in most of its jurisdictions. However, it is prudent to note that
with the beginning of the twenty first century, only a few of US states have legally recognized
the gay marriage through court verdicts and legislative proceedings and have lawfully allowed
the gay people to get into a relationship (Wolfson 2004). Nevertheless, it has also been noticed
that with the passage of time increasing number of people are supporting the legalization of gay
marriage at a progressive and noticeable speed. In addition, records expose the fact that more or
less fifty percent of the US population are in favor to legally authorize the gay marriage with equal
rights that are provided to couples of traditional marriages. The proponents have added various
arguments to support their perspectives that are based on civil rights of the gay community,
medical grounds and so forth. While on the other side of the spectrum, the opponents have also
provided their basis for arguments of disagreement on parenting concerns, religious concerns and
many other intellectual perceptions (Wolfson 2004). Even though laws of the US articulates that
they do not permit discrimination, exploitation or persecution of any

Write An Essay On Influenza Virus
INTRODUCTION
T cells are part of the adaptive immunity that proliferate in the thymus, their protein antigen
receptors provide pathogen specific recognition
T cells binds via the viable regions of О± and ОІ chains to epitopes of fragments of antigens that
are presented on the surface of host cells in a host protein called an MHC (major histocompatibility
complex) molecule.
Helper T cells (CD4+) interact with antigen fragments of MHC 2 class molecules on the surface of
antigen presenting cells and when activated secrete cytokines that stimulate other lymphocytes.
Cycotoxic T cells (CD8+) bind to MHC 1 class on infected host cells and secrete proteins that
initiate destruction.
Memory T cells are long lived subpopulations of Helper and cytotoxic populations that increase
capacity to specific common antigens ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, Pizzola et al investigated the deposition, protection, and recall response of influenza
virus specific memory CD8+ T cells in the URT. These studies showed that influenza virus specific
Trm cells developed within the URT after intranasal influenza virus infection and rapidly cleared a
secondary heterosubtypic influenza infection from the nasal mucosa and, in doing so, prevented
virus spread into the lung.
The URT is a key region to limiting viral spread to the LRT and, therefore, in preventing the
development of viral pneumonia and severe disease. decay oflung Trm cells diminishes their
potential for long term protection against future infectionsВІ
Trm cells in the nasal tissue of the URT are not susceptible to the same erosion and can provide
long term protection against secondary influenza virus infections. Trm cells present within the URT
could also limit transmission of influenza virus from the upper to the lower airways. Hence,
vaccination strategies that deposit Trm cells within the URT could safeguard the TRT and provide
longer lasting protection against respiratory

Animal Cruelty In The Iditarod
The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. (Lao Izu) This quote connects to the
Iditarod because to start the 1,049 mile journey they just have to take one step and it all begins.
The Iditarod is a 1,049 mile long dog sled race across Alaska through the fridge cold weather. The
race takes over a week to finish without shelter, it s just you the dogs and the cold weather of Alaska
.
The Iditarod is not animal cruelty because of the mandatory gear the mushers are required to
have. The most important required item that mushers must carry is a vet book. Having a vet
book is an official Iditarod rule. (Iditarod rules) Vet books keep track of everything about the
dogs from how/what they are eating to how they are running. The vet book is required to be
signed by the musher and a vet at every checkpoint. A second, thing they are required to bring is
at least 8 booties per dog. (Iditarod rules) The dogs wear the booties to help prevent injuries to
their paws while they are running. One last required thing they have to bring is a pot that holds ...

Alaskan Huskies are a modern Iditarod dog of choice for a couple of reasons. One of the biggest
reasons is that Alaskan Huskies are an ultimate racing machine. A second reason, is that Alaskan
Huskies ancestry is combined with the quality of strength, speed, agility and endurance. (Gray

love to exercise and they are natural born runners. So the Iditarod is kinda their thing. (Gray line

Dead Heads Deviance Analysis
Deviance is an aspect of everyday life that helps reaffirm social norms. This idea of deviancy can
be witnessed in the Dead Head subculture. The most appropriate way to analyze the Dead Heads
would be to look at their behavior from the Symbolic Interaction approach. This view focuses on
society as being the product of everyday interactions between individuals. In understanding the
Dead Heads, a participant observation research method would be most fitting. The participant
observation approach gives the researcher a first hand account of how the Dead Heads behave and
interact with each other and the outside world. The personal encounters of the researcher with the
Deadheads could, however, create issues in remaining objective in their observations

Character Development in Youth Sports Essay
I saw in his eyes sheer delight and the joy of accomplishment. He had successfully faced a
pitcher older and bigger and had fought off pitch after pitch before knocking a single into left
field. His base hit drove in a run, continued an inning and fueled a rally which brought the team a
victory from what looked like a certain defeat. He was willing to be taught and was willing to try.
Success was secondary to the life skills he was mastering. Character traits will certainly be
developed as one participates in team sports, but to attain positive character traits will require
deliberate efforts by parents, adults, teammates and even leaders of the organization itself.

Unfortunately, involvement in youth sports has not had the effect most parents are expecting.
Instead author Carey informs the reader with disturbing statistics. He asserts 84% of parents
surveyed in an issue of SportingKid magazine have witnessed violent parental behavior toward
children, coaches or official at kids sporting events, 80% said they had been victims of such
behavior. Violence makes headlines too, as Docheff and Conn speak about a father of a 10 year
old ice hockey player confronts a coach, engages in some verbal sparring until asked to leave. Then
the stressed father returns to the rink, challenges the coach again, and begins beating him while
young athletes yell helplessly for the crazed parent to stop. It s too late. Two days later, a
spokesperson for the hospital announces that the coach has died (par 1).
Extreme parental behavior is not the norm, however one of the more widely reported cases of
violence involved a woman who was jailed for trying to hire a hit man to kill the mother of her
daughter s cheerleading rival. This eventually led to a made for TV movie, Willing to Kill: the
Texas Cheerleader Story, which aired on ABC in 1992. In another study, Carey claim 82% stated
parents were too aggressive in youth sports (par. 4). The claim, in youth sports means the
aggression is not exclusive to games. The hostility is behavior prevalent at practices, too.

The Power Of Life In Robert Hughes s The Weary Blues
Nevertheless, Hughes through his literary works embraced the spirit of the Afro American
community through his attempts to capture everyday life. Using his poetic works, he could give
a platform to the powerless and provide the marginalized people a voice, along with his
willingness to depict the realities of life by popularising the blue theme genre. One of his
earliest poetic works The Weary Blues captures the inner tensions of the Harlem experience
during this period, by portraying a sadness within the oppressed black community, although
beginning to find relief through the power of music. Hugh s had adopted a jazz styled form of
rhythm within his poems as he drew inspiration from the Harlem streets and black music.
Johnston and Farrell praised Hugh s innovations in evolving the idioms of blues and jazz into
poetic verse and reinvigorating the genre all together. Music had now functioned as an expressive
medium within this movement as the Afro American communities were beginning to redefine
themselves and the music created a common bond amongst them. This recognition had ventured
beyond the realms of the Afro American community as it encapsulated the attention of all
sections of mainstream society. Hughes recognized the power of music in uniting the different
races, but called for this cultural respect to go far beyond simple interracial meetings during the
night. Davies explores Hughes admiration for the region of Harlem as it became a new world
filled with energy and excitement comparing it to a never land of Jazzonia . However, Harlem s
exuberance was restricted to the night life, as during the rise of dawn it fell back in upon itself
exhibiting the bland and bleak nature of area, full of its tensions within social and economic
problems. Hugh s offers an insight into this characterisation of Harlem, describing the phenomenon
of the Renaissance as When Negro was in Vogue , drawing attention to the importance of night live
entertainment for the majority of Afro Americans as means of gaining agency over their lives.
Hence, Hughes through his writing explored how the development and growth of nightlife had
played a profound role in the shaping of the Harlem experience, where this music and dance gave

Costs And Benefits Of Hosting The Olympic Games
Is It Worth It?: Analyzing the Costs and Benefits of Hosting the Olympic Games It s a gorgeous
early August day. You just want to be outside, regardless of what you are doing. Are you? Nope.
You are sitting in your car, stuck in traffic because your evening commute home has tripled in time
due to the traffic. This is a common side effect of hosting the Olympic Games. On the other hand,
the influx of people coming into the city does wonders for the local economy. Every few years,
countries throw mind blowing amounts of money at the International Olympic Committee(IOC) for
the right to host the Olympic Games, but is it worth it for the country and its citizens? In 2015,
Boston was in contention to host the 2024 summer Games, but ultimately lost out to Paris, much to
many Bostonians delight. Was their reaction justified, or did they just miss out on a great
opportunity? The monetary costs of hosting the Olympic Games are astronomical. The most
evident cost of hosting the Olympic Games are the monetary costs that come with hosting the
Games. At the Summer Games in 2008, Beijing spent at least US$100 million on the Opening
Ceremonies alone, according to Rishav Bista, Assistant Professor of Economics at Marshall
University. That is just where the costs start. At the time of their bid, many hopeful host cities do
not have the stadiums or arenas needed to accommodate all the events or the amount of people who
will be in attendance. The 2012 Olympic Games ended up costing

Rust And Tears. The Pitter Patter Of The Rain Against The
Rust and Tears The pitter patter of the rain against the attic window was a soft, constant sound. It
felt to Joyce as though the rest of the world were mourning with her and the thought comforted
her in a strange and sad way. The world was an infinitely duller place without her grandmother,
Annabelle, and it was felt by many. The funeral and reception had been over for only a few hours,
but Joyce found that she couldn t sleep and would rather be productive than stare at the water stain
on the corner of her ceiling that her grandmother had always hated. Her grandfather, Randall, wasn

Taking advantage of the seat, she sat down, and held the box inquisitively. After examining the
box, for what felt like a moment, she fingered the lid off and found a plethora of aged letters,
pictures and even some ripped up pieces of old notebook paper. It distinctly and heartbreakingly
smelled of rust and tears. She gently picked up a few of the items for closer inspection when she
heard a clanking thud against the wooden floors. She looked down to find a brass heart shaped
necklace that looked old and worn, obviously loved and beginning to rust from age. She picked
it up tenderly, fearing she would break the fragile looking necklace. She looked closer to better
make out the brass engraving, which was a molding of a small, beautiful tree of life, which is
now nearly covered in rust. Fingering the back as she held it, she found her fingers caught on an
uneven surface, and flipped it over to investigate. It was a second engraving that was faded, she
moved the locket closer to her face to read it. Upon doing this, she discovered a distinct smell,
which she was surprised to find she immediately recognized. It smelled like rust and tears. The
faded engraving, which read Anna + Marcus surprised her, as she was expecting to find her
grandfather s name next to her grandmother s. She sorted through the box to see the same name
addressed in the letters and realized it must have been someone of

The Birthmark By Judith Fetterley
Beauty can be defined as the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep
satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations, a meaningful design or
pattern, or something else. In The Birthmark it is a tragic and upsetting example of what beauty,
gender, and science represent. Georgiana was devoted to make her husband Alymer happy by
jeopardizing her life so he wouldn t suffer from considering her birthmark. Thus potential perfection
is not worth a life. Analyzing the genderaspect of the story can be explained by Judith Fetterley.
She wrote an article called Women Beware Science: The Birthmark . Alymer simply looks at his
wife as someone he can control and wants nothing for her but to be perfect. Fetterley says, It is
the demonstration of how to murder your wife and get away with it. This story brings a lot of
talk of sexual politics and the way women are sometimes looked at in society. The way some
society members describe women are supposed to honor the man and never have any power over
the man, in The Birthmark it is clear that Alymer looks at Georgiana as a women that is his own
property and should be perfect in every aspect according to him. The gender portion comes into
play when the question is asked, what if it was a man obsession with another man to be perfect or a
womanobsession for a man to be perfect? In The Birthmark Alymer did not wish for Aminadab his
servant to be perfect. It is all about gender

Potential Of Microbial Fuel Cells
Potential of Microbial Fuel Cells
A microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a device that converts chemical energy to electrical energy by the
catalytic and metabolic reactions of microorganisms. The microorganisms function as a catalyst in
the electron transfer between the electrodes. A MFC is just like any other fuel cell in its function
which can undergo a half cell reaction. A typical microbial fuel cell consists of anode and cathode
compartments separated by a cation (positively charged ion) permitting specific membrane. At the
anode, the organic matter or substrate is oxidized by microorganisms, generating CO2, electrons
and protons. Electrons are transferred to the cathode through an external electric circuit, while
protons are transferred to the cathode through the membrane. Electrons and protons react in the
cathode, combining with oxygen to form water.
A simple REDOX reaction takes place in the fuel cell. The rate of the reactions can depend on the
internal resistance, bacteria, substrate, semi permeable membrane and electrode configuration. The
basic reactions that occur when microorganisms consume a substrate such as sugar in the presence
of O2 they produce CO2 and H2O. But, when oxygen is not present they produce CO2, H+ and e .

The Tragic Tragedy Of Yugoslavia
The Tragedy in Yugoslavia Imagine being in the middle of a bloody, tragic war; your relatives
are dying and your city being completely destroyed and reduced to rubble. This is what it was
like for the citizens living in Yugoslavia from 1992 to 1995 during the atrocious Yugoslav
Genocide (Bosnian Genocide). During this war for independence, over two hundred thousand
people died and around two million people fled from the region (Civil War). The Republic of
Bosnia Herzegovina was the main place of battle after they declared independence in 1992
(Blackburn). Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia Herzegovina was where the worst fighting took place.
The Yugoslav Genocide was mainly caused by the political unease that had been rising in
Yugoslavia. Although these political strains were the primary cause for the mass genocide, they
were not the only factor. Long standing rivalries between three religions and an economic crisis that
had been growing in Yugoslavia also played prominent roles in inducing the war. Over time,
numerous political tensions between the Serbians, Croatians and Muslims generated violence,
which negatively provoked different ethnic groups and eventually led to a war. These three groups
made up the majority of the Yugoslavian population. They had long standing rivalries and tensions
the had been steadily increasing over time. After World War I, the three ethnic groups were forced
together in the Kingdom of Serbs, Muslims, and Croats. The new kingdom was renamed the

  • 2. Goldfish Observation During our fourth lesson on caring for goldfish, we were able to achieve the intended lesson objectives based on student responses, behaviors, anecdotal notes, journal entries, and teacher observations. I wrote and taught this lesson, while Ms. Meaghan was in charge of running one observation station. She also took anecdotal notes about student responses and quotes during the opening and closing of the lesson. This lesson was about caring for goldfish, and therefore, required the use of goldfish to conduct the lesson effectively. Since the classroom teaching informed me that the goldfish died, I bought six more and two aquariums for the purpose of this lesson. This lesson required a lot of materials and preparation, but as a result of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to determine if the entire class was able to reach the objective, Ms. Meaghan and I took anecdotal notes during our observation groups about student s observations and quotes about each basic need. In each group, each student was assigned a job, which was described on each card. Their jobs related to providing the goldfish with their basic needs for survival. Three students in each group were feeders, four students were planters, and four were water changers (two added water and two replaced). The feeders each received a piece of scrap paper with some food on it, and each student took turns feeding the fish. The planters each put a sprig of elodea in the tank to create shelter. The two water removers, each took a small Dixie cup of dirty water out of the tank, and the two water adders, put one small Dixie cup of conditioned water into the tank. Through their work in their small group, the students were able to develop an understanding of each need of goldfish, and understand how to provide it. They were able to have a chance to actually provide the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. How Urbanisation Significantly Influences Bird Communities... INTRODUCTION The most drastic influences of human modifications result from urbanisation, a progression characterised by human disturbance, buildings and other artificial infrastructure (Hahs and McDonnell 2006). Such modifications have significant effects on biodiversity, often with little thought being given to the long term effects and ways of mitigating them. In most cases, human alteration of the environment has reduced biological diversity by replacing the native flora with new ecological spaces. However, urbanization, especially in suburbia, can introduce many new resources (McDonnell and Pickett 1990; Pickett et al. 2001) which coexist with the natural biota and increases diversity of avifauna in semi urban environments. It is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These sites varied from industrial/urban areas to native vegetation hotspots, parklands and residential areas. At each site the standardised search bird survey method was used (Watson 2003) with the boundaries of the designated patch provided, the area was searched for any birds present (on ground, in trees or in flight). Each detection was recorded according to their species, number observed and the time observed. This process continued until no new species was sighted for 20 minutes. Any observations about the site s vegetation, man made infrastructure and number of large native trees (over 50 cm wide) were noted. Then, a polygon was created for the shape of each site using Daft Logic (http:/ /www.daftlogic.com/projects google maps area calculator tool.htm) and converted into a KML file (using http://converter.mygeodata.eu/) where the .shp file was opened in i Tree Canopy (http:/ /www.itreetools.org/canopy/index.php). The site s landscape features and coverage were characterised according to the categories: trees/shrubs, impermeable surfaces, grass, water and soil/bare ground with 20 random sampling points used per hectare. This was also conducted for the surrounding landscape (a 250 m radius around centre of site). All coverage data was collated and cross examined to explore the similarities and difference in bird diversity and richness. RESULTS A total of 218 birds ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. A Research on Sexually Transmitted Diseases A Research on Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) STDs are among the very significant and preventable public health issues affecting the society and the globe at large today. In the development stage of human beings, it is of significance that they involve themselves in sexual activities. At this development stage, it is of note that adolescents mostly are at risk of contracting STDs. This is in all cultures because sexual activity is highest during the adolescent stage. This calls for early intervention to help them deal with this health problem. Educating the adolescents to abstain, and use contraceptives in early sexual activities, are the most important factors to deal with this issue (Oncel, Kulakac, Akcan, Eravsar Dedeoglu, 2011). Knowledge of STDs does not have to influence the sexual behavior. Most adolescents are ignorant on how STDs transmit. Lack of sexual information is the main cause of the increase in sexual activity among the youth. Many male and female youth ignore the physiological and psychological development of their bodies. This research aims to examine the sexual knowledge and behavior of adolescents towards the subject matter, STDs, to determine some factors including age, sex, and family status affecting the involvement of the respondents in sexual acts (Oncel et. al., 2011). Research work reveals that the awareness of the adolescents about sexuality and STDs appears to be inadequate. This mainly is because of the ignorance of health workers. ... • 7. Nature Vs Nurture As A Serial Killer Historical Background What causes an individual to become a serial killer? Bio psychologists believe that starting from birth the human mind is a tabula rasa or blank slate, and the individual learns behaviors and socio cultural norms from individuals around them. This concept of nature versus nurture was based upon the idea that it is how you are brought up (nurture) that governs the psychologically significant aspects of child development and the concept of maturation applies only to the biological. The theory that explains the nature aspect of the nature versus nurture principle is called the attachment theory, which views the bond between mother and child as being an innate process that ensures survival. It is a biological need that has ensured the survival of many species including the human race; because of the need to protect and be protected humans as a species has been able to endure. It is also a psychological need to want to be cared for as well as care for others a study done by Harry Harlow (1950s). The concept of nurture focuses mainly on the effect that the environment has on the development of human beings and whether it is more important than nature. Several studies have been generated to try and settle the ongoing debate of nature versus nurture. Many psychologists agree that nurture play a greater part in the development of a human being. • 8. Racial, Racial, And Cultural Stereotypes In The Middle... Nowadays, racial, societal, and cultural stereotypes are, unfortunately, becoming more and more common. Whether it be about something as insignificant as every high schoolers supposed immaturity, to something as substantial as a gender stereotype that denies people their rights, these misconceptions are hurting people every single day. One popular group to stereotype recently has been the Middle East. Almost everything people say about them is factually incorrect. The political world does not help much either. Many biased or misinformed politicians say things that aren t true, which then imprints society, which causes these misconceptions to bloom. Some of the most common misconceptions are what defines an Arab, all Middle Easterns hate Americans and are out to bomb them, and more. Middle Eastern stereotypes are misguided due to assumptions made with a lack of information, biases in the news, and implications made by our government, and other citizens only speak what they hear. Many of the Middle Eastern misconceptions you hear most often are about Arabs. But while you may think these misconceptions are about Arab culture, the misunderstanding is really about what an Arab actually is. According to the American Arab Anti Discrimination Committee, or ADC, Arab is a cultural and linguistic term. It refers to those who speak Arabic as their first language. Arabs are united by culture and by history. Arabs are not a race. Some have blue eyes and red hair; others are dark ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Gullivers Travels Comparison Between Book and Movie Essay Gullivers Travels Comparison Between Book and Movie It is common in today s media driven society to reach into the past for inspiration and ideas. A trend has developed where original works are transformed into other mediums. For example: books are turned into movies and/or plays, movies are turned into weekly sitcoms, and cartoons will spawn empires (Disney). These things happen so often that an audience rarely stops to question the level of authenticity that remains after these conversions. Perhaps it is only when a project is not well received that people begin to think of the difficulties involved with changing a work s genre. Using Gulliver s Travelsas an example, discrepancies and additions in the movie can be... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cobwebs and dust obscure the sign at first, but Gulliver breaks down the barrier and wipes the sign to reveal that he has found the Room of Answers. He enters the room and asks if the man there can tell him the way back to England. The man turns around and Gulliver is looking at an exact replica of himself. This second Gulliver states You know the way home, but you ll never find it because deep in you heart, you don t want to to which the original Gulliver replies That s not true! The scene described above appears to be quite critical to the plot development in the movie. However, this appears nowhere in the original text. The viewer must ask him/herself why this was added and the consequences of the change. The movie version of this story portrays Gulliver as a travel that has been gone for eight consecutive years and had been searching for his way home the entire time. He merely falls into unfortunate circumstances that prevent this return. In the book, however, it is less clear that Gulliver desires to be home at all. He very rarely speaks of his family and seems to have little emotion at being reunited with them after each journey or when he leaves them again. The movie s alternate portrayal of Gulliver seems incongruent with the added scene. Instead, this extra scene would appear to make more sense if the character of Gulliver was depicted as he was in the book. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. The Importance Of Pride In Fences By Agust Wilson In history, a lot of great man have fallen do to pride and selfishness, In the bible it says Lucifer clearly turned out to be so awed with his own particular excellence, knowledge, power, and position that he started to want for himself the respect and transcendence that had a place with God alone. The transgression that ruined Lucifer was self created pride. I used that lesson from the bible to say that pride can lead to major life consequences. In fences by Agust Wilson we see a perfect example of that when it comes to the main character, Troy is shown as a man who has hurt the people who are closest to him without even realizing it. He has acted in an unsensitive and heartless way towards his significant other, Rose, his brother, Gabriel and his children, Cory and Lyons. Toward the start of the story, Troy feels he has made them proud. He feels this all through the story. He doesn t understand the amount he has harmed them. In the first scene of the play his oldest son Lyons come to ask him for 10 dollars and answers no saying You ain t gonna find me going and asking nobody for nothing. I done spent too many years without (Troy). Troy s biggest strength and weakness is that he always looks out for his best interest and doesn t see anyone else s interest as important as his own. From these definitions, graffiti is art, yet in most cases, it s considered vandalism because it is done without permission of the property. When graffitiis done in a designated place or with the permission of the property owner, then it can truly be considered art. But even if these circumstances are not met, if the graffiti goes beyond a simple tag, it is art. As we sat there, the three of us, with our eyes crawling over the hill to look down it once more, we got up. One by one. It was the first year my cousins and I had decided to go snowboarding. Subjective perspective contains a self reported judgment where individuals express feeling about themselves. Whereas objective measures of well being are based on external criteria. For example, ways of living, fashion, choice of food and etc. The second question debates if a good life is a moment enjoyed or a life well lived. A moment is understood as being present in the now and mindful of the surroundings. For instance, enjoying the nature and time with their families. Whereas a life well lived is based on different people s perspective. For example, describing each day as their first day for the rest of their life. Lastly, is whether happinessis linked with virtue and can one be happy without being ethical. This argues if people have to be compassionate in order for them to be happy. We tend to view reading as a typical learning process that all children learn and can do with ease since it appears that everyone learns to read in elementary school. However, when evaluating the reading process, it becomes complex with specific skills that must be learned in a systematic organized method. The systematic part is essential because one skill set builds upon the other. These systematic organized parts of readingare divided into what is known as the Big 5. Reutzel and Cooter educates the reader that, ?the following aspects of literacy have been documented as an instructional essentials in the aforementioned federal research reports by the National Early Literacy panel, 2008, [where is the list of the big five can be found are]: Phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension?(p.16). When trying to decide on instruction for literacy in elementary school, there are a lot of reading programs and materials available, however they should contain Phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension as key components. At the elementary level, three observations were observed through the concepts of phonemic awareness, phonics and comprehension to determine how this instruction is provided to the students. Their major similarity is their respective locations on the bacterial cell. The ПѓE and ПѓK factors of both Bacillus and Clostridium are both localized in the mother cell while the ПѓF and ПѓG factors are localized in the forespore. One difference between the two genera is the stages wherein the activity of these sigma factors are detected. In Bacillus, the activities of ПѓEF and ПѓGK are only observed during the early and late stages of endosporulation respectively. Furthermore, the addition of INF55 was shown to be more effective in dormant spores as opposed to germinating spores. In conclusion, the spores need to first be in the germination stage in order for berberine to take effect. On the other hand, if INF55 is supplemented, even dormant spores can be affected by berberine (Wang, S.). The effects of berberine should also be tested on other sporulating bacteria such as Clostridium. As mentioned above, Bacillus and Clostridium undergo slightly varied endosporulation pathways. Thus, it is interesting to know if this occurrence has an implication to the effectivity of berberine against spores. Also, more studies on natural products with antibacterial properties, especially those that can affect the highly stress resistant endospore, should be undertaken. These compounds may target the sigma factors described above in order to disrupt endosporulation. Since vegetative cells are more susceptible to antibiotics and other management procedures, disruption of endosporulation by targeting the sigma factors may help reduce, if not eradicate the problems brought about by spore ... • 43. A Thousand Splendid Suns Character Analysis In A Thousand Splendid Suns and First They Killed My Father, we find the three female characters of Laila and Mariam, and Loung, respectively, in harrowing and dangerous political atmospheres. Both of the political atmospheres described in these two books expose these characters to harsh realities of war, abuse, starvation, and oppression; these characters must also come to terms with a rising body count around them. From Mariam s perspective, we hear that there was looting, murder, and, increasingly, rape, which was used to intimidate civilians and reward militiamen (Hosseini 253). Despite these despotic circumstances, and perhaps in spite of the physical toll they take, the three female characters of these books exhibit extraordinary perseverance as a result of their tumultuous surroundings. The most prevalent and threatening theme that each character experiences first hand, as a result of the dangerous political atmospheres they are exposed to, is starvation; we slowly see each character physically diminished throughout their stories. Loung describes vividly to readers, I can count every rib in my rib cage, but my stomach protrudes outward, bloated like a ball between my chest and hips (Ung 83). • 51. The Power Of Life In Robert Hughes s The Weary Blues Nevertheless, Hughes through his literary works embraced the spirit of the Afro American community through his attempts to capture everyday life. Using his poetic works, he could give a platform to the powerless and provide the marginalized people a voice, along with his willingness to depict the realities of life by popularising the blue theme genre. One of his earliest poetic works The Weary Blues captures the inner tensions of the Harlem experience during this period, by portraying a sadness within the oppressed black community, although beginning to find relief through the power of music. Hugh s had adopted a jazz styled form of rhythm within his poems as he drew inspiration from the Harlem streets and black music. Johnston and Farrell praised Hugh s innovations in evolving the idioms of blues and jazz into poetic verse and reinvigorating the genre all together. Music had now functioned as an expressive medium within this movement as the Afro American communities were beginning to redefine themselves and the music created a common bond amongst them. This recognition had ventured beyond the realms of the Afro American community as it encapsulated the attention of all sections of mainstream society. Hughes recognized the power of music in uniting the different races, but called for this cultural respect to go far beyond simple interracial meetings during the night. Davies explores Hughes admiration for the region of Harlem as it became a new world filled with energy and excitement comparing it to a never land of Jazzonia . However, Harlem s exuberance was restricted to the night life, as during the rise of dawn it fell back in upon itself exhibiting the bland and bleak nature of area, full of its tensions within social and economic problems. Hugh s offers an insight into this characterisation of Harlem, describing the phenomenon of the Renaissance as When Negro was in Vogue , drawing attention to the importance of night live entertainment for the majority of Afro Americans as means of gaining agency over their lives. Hence, Hughes through his writing explored how the development and growth of nightlife had played a profound role in the shaping of the Harlem experience, where this music and dance gave ... Alymer simply looks at his wife as someone he can control and wants nothing for her but to be perfect. Fetterley says, It is the demonstration of how to murder your wife and get away with it. This story brings a lot of talk of sexual politics and the way women are sometimes looked at in society. The way some society members describe women are supposed to honor the man and never have any power over the man, in The Birthmark it is clear that Alymer looks at Georgiana as a women that is his own property and should be perfect in every aspect according to him. The gender portion comes into play when the question is asked, what if it was a man obsession with another man to be perfect or a womanobsession for a man to be perfect? In The Birthmark Alymer did not wish for Aminadab his servant to be perfect. It is all about gender ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 56. Potential Of Microbial Fuel Cells Potential of Microbial Fuel Cells A microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a device that converts chemical energy to electrical energy by the catalytic and metabolic reactions of microorganisms. The microorganisms function as a catalyst in the electron transfer between the electrodes. A MFC is just like any other fuel cell in its function which can undergo a half cell reaction. A typical microbial fuel cell consists of anode and cathode compartments separated by a cation (positively charged ion) permitting specific membrane. At the anode, the organic matter or substrate is oxidized by microorganisms, generating CO2, electrons and protons. Electrons are transferred to the cathode through an external electric circuit, while protons are transferred to the cathode through the membrane. Electrons and protons react in the cathode, combining with oxygen to form water. A simple REDOX reaction takes place in the fuel cell. The rate of the reactions can depend on the internal resistance, bacteria, substrate, semi permeable membrane and electrode configuration. The basic reactions that occur when microorganisms consume a substrate such as sugar in the presence of O2 they produce CO2 and H2O. But, when oxygen is not present they produce CO2, H+ and e . American Women In The 1890 Through 1925 Analysis American Women in the era of 1890 through 1925 had a difficult time getting and having opportunities due to the preconceived notions made of them. Women made drastic changes during this time period, industrialism and the war had a lot to do with it but politically and economically their rights were not yet given to them, Although women were as intelligent as men they did not earn the equal rights as to men. The preconceived notions made up of women by men, held back the opportunity for them to become advanced in what they would like to accomplish.Women had a harder time gaining a simple chance for employment, education, and having the right to keep their job if they got married or pregnant, in addition working hours were ... • 58. The Tragic Tragedy Of Yugoslavia The Tragedy in Yugoslavia Imagine being in the middle of a bloody, tragic war; your relatives are dying and your city being completely destroyed and reduced to rubble. This is what it was like for the citizens living in Yugoslavia from 1992 to 1995 during the atrocious Yugoslav Genocide (Bosnian Genocide). During this war for independence, over two hundred thousand people died and around two million people fled from the region (Civil War). The Republic of Bosnia Herzegovina was the main place of battle after they declared independence in 1992 (Blackburn). Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia Herzegovina was where the worst fighting took place. The Yugoslav Genocide was mainly caused by the political unease that had been rising in Yugoslavia. Although these political strains were the primary cause for the mass genocide, they were not the only factor. Long standing rivalries between three religions and an economic crisis that had been growing in Yugoslavia also played prominent roles in inducing the war. Over time, numerous political tensions between the Serbians, Croatians and Muslims generated violence, which negatively provoked different ethnic groups and eventually led to a war. These three groups made up the majority of the Yugoslavian population. They had long standing rivalries and tensions the had been steadily increasing over time. After World War I, the three ethnic groups were forced together in the Kingdom of Serbs, Muslims, and Croats. The new kingdom was renamed the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
