The Medical Promise Of Embryonic Stem Cells
The Medical Promise of Embryonic Stem Cells
Why should people suffer from diabetes, Alzheimer s, sickle cell anemia, leukemia, and plenty of
other degenerative diseases while the cure lies in our hands? After James Thompson, a developmental
biologist, reported that he had derived the first human embryonic stem cell line (Thomson), the
potential of curing degenerative diseases was revealed. Ph.D. holder and deputy director of FDA s
office of Cellular, Tissue and Gene Therapies, Stephanie Simek, explains that stem cells are
unspecialized cells (qtd. in FDA Warns About Stem Cell Claims ). In other words, since they are
unspecialized cells, they can ...generate lots of cells and, under the right conditions, become one of the
many cell types ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The process when stem cells give rise to blood cells, or any other specialized cells, is called
differentiation ( Stem Cell Basics ). Stem Cells ability of differentiation can be targeted and directed to
generate tissue and therefore to cure degenerative diseases (Panno 24 28). However, such medical
promise faces the doubts and gives rise to disputes. In fact, federal funds for stem cell research were
banned under President Bush s administration, but the ban was then lifted by President Obama s
administration (Obama). Despite the different arguments, more medical trials should be conducted
with embryonic stem cells in order to determine whether the medical promise is applicable or far
fetched.
Richard Doeflinger, an official with the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, argues that we must
not sacrifice one class of human being to benefit another (qtd. in Stem Cells ). However, ignoring the
medical promise of embryonic stem cells would end up sacrificing real, living human beings for
microscopic cells. Jean Peduzzi Nelson, the author of Adult Stem Cells Are Already Curing Diseases ,
argues that unlike embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells have already cured diseases. To support his
argument, Nelson narrates the story of Joe Davis Jr. who suffered from a severe sickle cell anemia
since birth. According to Nelson, At the age of two, Joe received an adult stem cell transplant; the

The Agricultural Equipment Industry And Culture On A...
The agricultural equipment industry is one that is very important to the global market because it
impacts both the United State s and Brazil s economies greatly. The balance of trade between the US
and Brazil relies on the success of agricultural equipment as a whole. This paper will analyze the
history of agricultural equipment and how machinery has impacted the farming industry and culture
on a global scale, and continues to do so.
History In order to gain an understanding of the agricultural equipment industry, we have to
acknowledge the history in this area. In the 1920 s, most farmers practiced farming with horses pulling
plows attached to them, which prepped the land for planting crops. Machines that picked crops had
not been invented by the 1920 s, so farmers had to harvest their crops by hand. John Froelich invented
of the first internal combustion traction motor, or tractor and had sold 20 of his tractors by 1914
through partnering with 8 investors from the Waterloo Gasoline Traction Engine Company.
Eventually, John Deere purchased the first tractor company to ever exist in 1918, and paid $2,350,000
for it. Needless to say, John Deere has seen a large return on their investment. Although manufacturers
such as John Deere in the United States had began to lead the way in building and assembling
mechanized tractors, this luxury was not widely utilized by farmers around the country because
tractors were both very expensive and limited. Eventually, tractors

The Washington Family Analysis
The Washington Family by Edward Savage, painted from 1789 1796, features American s original
First Family. (Fig. 1) George Washington sits around a table in his Mount Vernon home with his wife,
Martha and her two grandchildren, whom the Washingtons adopted following the death of their
parents. Behind them, a household slave stands ready to serve and a vast landscape sprawls outside the
window. Though the painting appears to be a simple, family portrait, it actually contains deeper,
political messages.
Savage depicts George Washington in a domestic setting to showcase his personal life outside of the
presidency; he is depicted with his family and in his private home. However, he is also shown in
uniform, alluding to his role as general. He does not grasp his sword, but instead rests his hand on a
stack of papers, representing his role as statesman. It was well known that Washington intended to step
out of the public sphere following the war before being elected, and that he continued to long for a
quiet life at home throughout his presidency. In this work, Savage depicts Washington filling roles of
general, statesman and patriarch, making the statement that he can fulfil all three roles. Further, by
depicting Washington as a father figure in his domestic setting, Savage invites his viewers to connect
him with the founding of the nations and thus visually establish him as the Father of our country.
Considering the popular print version of the work distributed around the

Comparing Canby s Tender Mercies
Tender Mercies is about Mac Sledge who a country singer with a troubled life. He is suffering from
alcoholism and has given up on relationships. Horton Foote wrote the screenplay 1983 with the
themes of love, relationships, and religion. Mac Sledge has a daughter from a previous marriage to
country singer, Dixie. The daughter, Sue Anne shows up to rekindle the father daughter relationship.
Rosa Lee and her son Sonny help Mac get back on his feet and start a new life with them. Rosa is a

They bring him back from tragedy when his daughter dies in a car accident. At the end Mac is shown
playing catch with Sonny across the street. He looks so sad, but Foote shows that Mac is trying to
move forward with Sonny. Christianity plays a big part in this movie. I am Catholic, but once I started
praying and talking God, my life s perspective changed. Just like Mac, I saw that my life can be better
and happier. Mac getting baptized helped him find love and peace in the arms of God. Even though,
Sue Anne and Mac s father and daughter relationship was the greatest, he got the peace of mind that
his daughter was trying to accept

addressed to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians who had been forcibly removed
from their families under government policies. The National Apology to the Stolen Generations came

Using Forensic Science to Identify Criminals Essay example
Using Forensic Science to Identify Criminals
Rape, murder, theft, and other crimes almost always leave a devastating mark on the victim. More
often than not, it would be impossible to identify the perpetrator a crime without forensic science and
the technology it uses. Forensic science allows investigators to unmask the secrets of the crime scene.
Evidence gathered at the crime scene helps to identify the guilty party, murder weapon, and even the
identity of the victim (Harkawy, 1991: 276). The new technologies enables the forensic experts to
have better and faster access to accumulated information, to be more accurate in the identification of
victims or delinquents, and minimizes the possibility of wrongful accusations. New technology ...

Computerized databases allow unskilled police officers to search the national database of footwear for
important information, such as shoe manufactures, or evidence that links the footprint to marks from
other crimes scenes. This footwear database enables the investigating officers to gather evidence
against the accused much faster and it is also saves precious time ( May, 1993:18). One of the oldest
forms of identification is the use of fingerprints and with the use of today s technology, many
corporations can use this type of technology to help prevent various frauds. For example, in the mid
1990 s Metro Toronto s Human Services Committee (MTHSC) proposed the use of a finger scanning
system in order to prevent welfare fraud. People applying for welfare would have to place their index
finger on a scanner. If their prints did not match those of someone already receiving benefits, they
would be eligible for a debit card, which would allow them to withdraw monthly payments from any
bank machine. This type of technology is not in use just yet, but it is available and would minimize
welfare fraud (Sternbergh, 1996: 64). Computers are also highly used in forensic science. For instance,
computer forensic, also referred to as forensic computer analysis or computer examination can be used
in finding the evidence for white collar crimes. Many computer forensic experts can recover

THE INCONSISTENCY OF RASKOLNIKOV S NARRATION OF THE CRIME VERSES HIS
PREPARATION.
Roskolnikov s actual narration of the crime is definitely inconsistent with his preparation for the
crime. From the pre ceding pages of the novel, we continually see Roskolnikov s careful
premeditation and disgust at criminals who lose their senses and commit a crime that can easily be
traced to themselves. Roskolnikov dwells on the fact that the extraordinary criminals pay attention to
the details that can eventually lead to their downfall. He often comments: For this business one should
be as little conspicuous as possible. . . . Trifles, trifles are what matter! Why, it s just such trifles that
always ruin everything. . . . He spends days counting the number of steps it takes to reach his victims
apartment (exactly 730), and meticulously wraps a fake, wooden pledge in cloth, constructs a noose to
conceal the ax in his coat, and spends time memorizing where Alyona keeps her keys all for the sake
of performing a perfect crime. Yet, when he does eventually place his plan into action: He was in a
terrible haste, and he kept making mistakes. Roskolnikov runs into many complications when trying to
complete his crime

The Arnolfini Wedding Essay
Jan van Eyck has been one of the more prominent early Netherlandish painters during his time. He has
had many famous works, however one of his more interesting and questionable pieces is The Arnolfini
Portrait. There is much to be desired in this painting by the great van Eyck. Van Eyck has been a
master painter most of his career, but in this painting he is able to show how his excellent painting
skills can bring this painting to life. The Arnolfini Portrait, which measures 82 × 59.5 cm (32.3 × 23.4
in) is an oil painting on oak panel dated 1434. This painting is also known by other as The Arnolfini
Wedding, The Arnolfini Marriage, The Arnolfini Double Portriat, or Giovanni Arnolfini and his Wife.

It is even speculated that he may have went so far as to use a magnifying glass when working on these
small details to ensure that they were as accurate as possible. This attention to detail has not only
brought the painting to life, but from a researchers point it illustrated just how important this painting
was for van Eyck to paint, and important the Arnolfini wedding may have been to him. It is said that
van Eyck may have included himself in this painting. If you take a look into the far background
reflected in the mirror there is a mysterious man on a turban. This easter egg inside the painting may
have been deliberately placed there for several reasons. Van Eyck may have wanted the viewer to feel
like they were standing with him while he was painting this image if it was indeed painted on the spot.
Or it could simply have been inserted into the scene of the painting that could be completely fictional.
Van Eyck has precisely placed everything in this painting in certain spots for a reason. He was very
good at leading the viewer s eye in a way that made sense. In this painting the first thing that van Eyck
wanted us to see was the famous mirror in the background so he deliberately placed it right in the
center of the painting. This not only lets you see the whole room but also splits up the two subjects,
Giovanni and his wife. Looking on form the painting to

Pyramus And Thisbe Essay
Not everyone has the same idea of beauty. Ovid s Pyramus and Thisbe follows lovers who are
forbidden to be with each other. The beauty that comes from the love that they share is shut down by
the wall between them. Rod Sterling s Twilight Zone episode Eye of the Beholder follows Ms. Tyler

The beauty in both the myth and the show are not seen by others. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
means that beauty is determined by each person individually. Disapproval of oneself and of a couple
can be hard to overcome. Ovid s, Pyramus and Thisbe highlights the theme of forbidden love. Their
fathers are opposed to them being together so they decide to run away to be together. The myth says,
This time, after/ sighing/ their tale of woe, they made a decision: when all was quiet/ that night, they
would try to elude their guards and steal/ out of doors (4.83 85). Running away is the only way that
Pyramus and Thisbe could be together, so that s what they did. Being together was more important to
them than anything else. Although their fathers disapproved them being together they didn t care, their
love for eachother was so strong that no barrier could ever stop them from loving each other. In the
show Twilight zone, Ms. Tyler was not accepted because she looked different than the majority of
people. The narrator in the show says, Now there are questions that come to mind. Where is this place,
and when is it? What kind of world where ugliness is the norm and beauty the deviation from that
norm? You want an answer? The answer is, it doesn t make any difference. Because the old saying

The Guardian Building Of Downtown Detroit
What is that strange orange brick building? Why should I care about that? That striking orange, brick
building is the Guardian Building of downtown Detroit. When deciding to go to a historical site in the
city, I was drawn in by the history of the place. I am relatively new to the city and when I heard about
this place, I knew that s where I wanted to go. When our group traveled together to the site, it became
apparent why this building is not only important to Detroit, but to all cities. The Guardian Building
was not only a great fixture of the past, but it is a leading example of the efforts to bring a city back to
greatness. The Guardian Building was founded by The Union Trust Company. Smith Hinchman and

Short Summary Of Araby
James Joyce tells a story of a young boy around the age of eleven, who lives with his uncle and aunt in
an uninhabited house at the end of a blind corner. He likes to play with his friends till late night. Araby
also known as the bazaar was the place he wishes to visit. This story is mainly based on the type of
place where they live, his fondness toward his friend s sister, and the Araby(bazaar) where he wanted
to go. According to the story the place they live sounds awful because as he mentioned The former
tenant of our house, a priest, had died in the back drawing room (Joyce 86). This place doesn t sounds
adequate enough for a child to live in because it can cause unnecessary fear for the child. Also he was
playing in the contaminating place till late night in freezing cold, which can be proven harmful for a
child s physical health. Once his aunt send him to market to pick up some of the parcels, on his way he
saw drunken men, druggies, and some bad people were cursing on each other. Those were the worst
things for a child to see, and a child was not supposed to send to those kind of market as well. Living
in this type of environment is dangerous for the child s future because a child learn faster by observing
an adult . His uncle and aunt were careless about him. They never paid attention to the things he had
been doing during their absence. On the other hand, they should have used all the bad things to give
him an example that, if he started doing those things he will never able to be a successful man. He will
be stuck there as those people were, and never will able to see a good lifestyle. But his uncle and aunt
had never bother themselves to teach him anything. As he likes to play with Mangan everyday. Most
of the time Mangan s sister come out to call him for tea, and he (Joyce as a child) likes to watch his
sister, every time she come out of her house. A little by little he started liking her, but he was scared to
talk to her. Except some casual talks. He was in love with her because everyday he uses different
techniques to take a glance at her. Once he murmured: O love! O love! many times for her. He
promised her that he will bring something for her whenever he goes to Araby. For a eleven year

Maynard On Euthanasia
I am dying and I refuse to lose my dignity. (Maynard). Many people feel this way when they learn
about the life changing statement that they have a terminal disease. Brittany Maynard, who was
diagnosed with a terminal brain disease decided to choose the option of Euthanasia to save her dignity
and leave the world by her own choice and means. Euthanasia is the termination of a very sick person
s life in order to relieve their suffering. A person who undergoes euthanasia usually has an incurable
condition but there are other instances where some people want their life to be ended. This term of
euthanasia is derived from the Greek word euthanatos which means easy death (Nordqvist). This topic
known as euthanasia is a controversial issue that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I probably would have suffered in hospice care for weeks or even months. And my family would have
had to watch that (Maynard). Maynard believes that her family won t be able to see her in a
deteriorating condition therefore decided to opt out of that. Families can t see their loved one in pain
everyday of every hour. I did not want this nightmare scenario for my family, so I started researching
death with dignity .......I quickly decided that death with dignity was the best option for me and my
family (Maynard). Maynard felt that undergoing a treatment for getting rid of the tumor would be
more painful for her and her family. No one can give Brittany and her family a hundred percent
guarantee that tumor would actually go away forever. Doctors confirmed that if Brittany goes under
treatment, she will be the same person she was before treatment meaning that treatment will have side
effects that might affect her for her entire life. The lethal drug used for euthanasia patients is more cost
efficient for people. Soumya Karlamangla, author of Will California s end of life push lethal drugs
over costlier care? explains that drugs that keep one alive are too expensive to afford and have no
guarantee of being helpful while the injection or pills to end life are free of cost (Karlamangla). The
questions of saving money and doctor s guarantee that the incurable disease will go away with
treatment comes into play during making this important choice. Why would one pay more money for a
drug that has no guarantee of saving their life and getting their hopes up when there is a big possibility
that nothing will happen. While the lethal drug also known as the euthanasia drug is much less
expensive and will do its job with certainty. Therefore if one is debating what route to choose when

feminaw Feminist Reading of Kate Chopin s The Awakening...
A Feminist Reading of The Awakening
The Awakening is not new to me. However, in the class when I read it before the instructor refused to
entertain a feminist criticism. The theory presented was that Edna knew what kind of man she was
marrying and all these things she went through: her friendship with Madame Reisz leaving the house,
entertaining her friends at the party, her situation with Robert and Arobin were all selfish efforts
toward the ultimate freedom which is death.
I feel Chopin faults Leonce as much as Edna for Edna s problems. He is a cold fish. He is controlling
and he puts on a show for friends and neighbors proving he is a model husband which he is not. He is
Creole and I think Edna, being as reserve ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her search for freedom builds and destroys relationships. She befriends people and then chooses to
ignore them. Her final big party is her final farewell. She brings out all the sensuousness that her
reserve had kept her from expressing and enjoying. Everything pleasing to the senses is there for her
guests. There are colors, textures, tastes, and sounds for the senses to luxuriate. But all this sensory
enhancements doesn t keep her attention. She feels the same old ennui, and the party shortly thereafter
breaks up. Of course, all this meets with Leonce disapproval. His concern is not about his wife s
mental or emotional health, but rather, what people will say.
To experience freedom of the soul Edna has no choice but to return to the sea. It is the only thing
capable of giving her the emotional security and sensual satisfaction at the same time. She goes to it
and allows it to claim her.
Like many of Chopin s stories, The Awakening ends in a death. Chopin apparently sees death as the
ultimate freedom. No matter what we do as women in this world we are always restricted in our
movements by some facet of our lives. While Chopin tries to speak for women, I think this premise
that our lives are restricted also applies to men. There may not be as many restrictions but they are
there. Freedom s just another word for nothin left to loose. Janis Joplin

Bilingualism
What does it mean to be bilingual? Is it as simple as having the ability to speak two languages? Or
does it have a deeper meaning? Martin Espada and Richard Rodriguez have opposite views on the
concept of bilingualism. Espada feels Latinos have the right to speak Spanish anywhere, considering
language is intertwined with identity. Conversely, Rodriguez believes that to truly understand a
language, you must forget the language that is already known to feel accepted in society. These ideas,
similar to mine are not as simple as speaking two languages. To me the idea of bilingualism is
respecting the two languages that are spoken by having the courage to speak them anywhere, at
anytime. According to Martin Espada the idea of bilingualism is way deeper than just speaking two
languages. Being bilingual to Espada means that both the languages spoken are intertwined with
identity. This claim is constructed in his essay The New Bathroom Policy at English High School. He

The Theme Of Denial In Elie Wiesel s Night
In the novel, Night, by Elie Wiesal and the short interview with Franz Stangl, a commandant of death
camps during the Holocaust, the theme of denial appears multiple times. In the piece written by Elie
Wiesal, the people of Sighet looked beyond the truth of reality and ignored Moche the Beadle when he
spoke the truth from his experiences. He told the community that he was deported and then brought
into the woods. Once he arrived, the other deportees and him were told to dig graves; then the soldiers
started slaughtering them void of emotion. Once he escaped, he ran to go tell the community. He told
them his experience and how babies were thrown into the air and the machine gunners used them as
targets (Wiesal 16). After, he announced his

Beattie 1991 Case Study
Beattie s health promotion (1991), consists of four parts, Health persuasion, personal counselling,
community development and legislative action. Beattie (1991), argues that when all four aspects are
applied throughout the community alongside effective partnerships the population will see an
improvement in patient behaviour and in turn an improvement in poor health. Beattie (1991), goes on
to state that the use of health persuasion can alter the individual s perception and attitudes, this could
be done by providing the patient with evidence to show them how their current behaviour will affect
their future. This could easily be applied via one to one contact between the patient and nurse,
however the advice and input from the nurse must be individualised if the patient is going to recognise

bariatric surgery patients manage to maintain long term weight loss, with 50% of patients putting only
5% of their weight loss back on. However, Madura and DiBaise, (2012) argue that this invasive

The Effects Of Russian Culture On Military Operations
The Effects of Russian Culture on Military Operations in That Region
Introduction
Understanding a country s culture as it pertains to military operations is highly important in the
modern era. Dictionary.com defines culture as the behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a particular
social, ethnic, or age group . There are many examples throughout history that show the negative
consequences of ignoring or misunderstanding the cultures of other countries. The most recent
example is our long sustained operations in the Middle East. We have operated in the Middle East for
the better part of two and a half decades. Through our own successes and failures, it is obvious how
important cultural awareness can be. The mistakes we have made have created more animosity
towards our military and our country in general. Over the last decade, our government has worked
continuously to understand and teach those lessons to our service members. Through those efforts, we
have been able to win over many of the hearts and minds that we lost during the early part of the 1990
s and 2000 s. Continuing these practices in the future, with countries such as Russia, will allow us to
overcome many of the mistakes and problems we have encountered in the past.
This paper is the culmination of my own personal thoughts and in no way reflects any official views
or opinions of the United States government. As you move from topic to topic, I hope you begin to
understand how important it is to know a

Puritan Beliefs In The Crucible
The Puritans were one of the first Europeans who settled in the North America. These settlers were
influenced heavily by the church and Christian beliefs. Through The Crucible written by Arthur
Miller, the readers could see how the Puritans reveal their strict beliefs in their lifestyle. Among those
beliefs, the idea of unforgiven sins and the presence of the Devil in the community negatively affected
the Puritans that caused the massacre at the Salem Village, Massachusetts in 1692. The Puritans
believed that Satan is physically alive and secretly occupied the holy community. John Cotton,
preeminent minister and theologian of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, insisted that: When a man
wittingly and willing by commits any knowne sinne, he doth as actually give his Soule to the Devil, as
a Witch doth her body and soule; we thereby renounce the covenant of God and Satan takes
Possession of us. The Puritan believed that Satan had evil power to manipulate people s soul and
caused diseases upon the bodies. The Devil created temptation such as drunkenness or adultery in
order to lure people into the trap of sins and killed them. In the play The Crucible , Betty Parris and
Ruth Putnam, who unconsciously laid on the bed, was justified as the act of the devil. Because the
doctor was not able to explain any medical reasons for that illness, the blame was easily placed on the
Devil and the witches who worked for him. In addition, The Puritan blamed the Devil for many

The Causes Of Computer Threats
Have you ever wondered about today s ongoing problem with computer based threats? There are
many online complications today with these new generations forming. Computer viruses, malware,
identity theft, online predators, cyber bullying, phishing, and hacking (black hat and white hat) are
only a few problems going on online, yet they cause so many problems and threats.
To begin with, computer viruses are types of malicious software programs that replicate themselves by
changing other computer programs and inserting their own code. This all happens when they get
executed. This takes place when computers become infected with the virus, there are many reasons to
why computers can become infected. Accepting without reading is by far the most common way a
computer can become infected. This happens when a user just automatically accepts what they see on
their screen without reading the prompt before continuing. For example, while on the internet an
advertisement or a window may appear that says your computer is infected, without completely
understanding what you re getting, you accept the prompt anyways. Another reason to why your
computer may become infected is by downloading any infected software. When downloading software
such as programs, utilities, games, updates, demos, etc. always make sure you are downloading this
software from reliable sources. Always read all prompts about what the program is installing onto
your computer. Opening e mail attachments can cause your

Pros And Cons Of Women In The Military
Women in the Military Women being in the military has become more prevalent in the last few
decades, but are they helping or hurting the military by doing so? Women being allowed in the
military dates all the way back to World War I where women would serve as nurses to aid wounded
soldiers (Wood). Now, women are allowed to serve in different roles, combat being one of them.
There is controversy whether the military is a place for women, but research shows pros and cons to
both sides. Even though women were not allowed to enlist in the military until World War I, they
would disguise themselves as men in earlier wars such as the Revolutionary, Civil and Mexican War in
order to be apart of the military. The Navy and Marine Corps were ... Show more content on

Although, one concern for women being allowed to serve in a combat occupation is sexual
harassment. The issue regarding sexual harassment has become more prevalent in the past decade
because military personnel is having more faith in the military to investigate such accusations
accordingly. Just last year, 6,131 sexual assault reports were filed with the DoD. In 2007, the number
of sexual assault filings were half of what they were last year which makes the DoD believe the
implications about sexual harassment they have put into place are working (Whitlock). Whitlock s
article states that an extreme amount of alcohol consumption is one of the leading causes of sexual
harassment cases, but there is no specificity on whether the cases are against men or women. Sexual
harassment has often been focused more on women being victims, but men can be victims of such
crimes as well. That is why the military has implemented a variety of methods into the regular military
training regarding sexual harassment and the repercussions of such actions. On another note, there are
studies that show women are more organized, creative thinkers and have better social sensitivity skills
than men (Haring). Haring s work explains that women are better at reading people s emotions,
therefore using that intel to make more

The Elements Of Lean Production
THE ELEMENTS OF LEAN PRODUCTION
In this part, the authors write about the steps of developing lean production by pointing out the
assembly plants, the differences between lean and Ford s point of view, production procedures, the
supply chain, the scheme of selling automobiles, and what lean needs to be perfect.
Running the Factory. This chapter is written according to an investigation at IMVP World Assembly
Plant. It is true that the car assembly workshops require a significantly large space with massive
storage areas and railway systems. Besides, thousands of labors will work in a big and chaotic
building with many noisy machines; consequently, this is such a significant problem for all automobile
companies. The writers use the case of the IMVP World Assembly Plant to emphasize the three factors
that persuaded them that assembly was the most essential part in the automobile manufacturing
process. The first thing is that assembly is involved in most of the work in car industry. The next
reason is all of the cars and light trucks today are manufactured in the same technique so that the
assembly factories in the world almost do the similar work. Lastly, Toyota, in order of spreading the
lean production, had built lots of assembly factory in both North America and Europe. Furthermore, a
typical example of mass production at General Motor workshop in Massachusetts is used in order to
illustrate the need of lean production in the Midwest of America. Subsequently, the

Pizza is a food that Sandra Steingraber associates with happiness. She explains how pizza jogs her
memories of birthday parties and sleepovers. However, her goal of writing this piece was not to
educate the reader about her love for pizza, but to draw the reader into the piece of writing so she can
give support for why organic food is better than conventional. The reader is able to connect with
Sandra Steingraber with personal stories about her life and the happiness that pizza has given her. She

Further, she starts to say that the biggest difference in the money spent on conventional than organic is
milk. She is able to use facts that say that organic makes about nine dollars more than convectional per
a hundred pounds. However, she continues by saying there have been studies that explain that
conventional way of farming causes miscarriages, low sperm counts, premature birth, and birth
defects. While conventional is cheaper than organic, however it saves peoples lives in the long run.
She is able to use sources time and time again to support her argument. Mrs. Steingraber would make
claims of the differences between wheat flour, olive oil, tomatoes and garlic; the ingredients of pizza.
Indeed most of the conventional being cheaper time and time again, but she explains the differences
and the way the ingredients are being treated. In conclusion for her argument with why organic is
better, she continues to say how she wants to make not only the farming community better, but help
save the ozone layer, prevent cancer, and protect drinking water. Her final thought is that the total cost
of pizza organic is six dollars and eighty five cents. While conventional is four dollars and fifty cents,
she wants to leave with the thought of would you want to sacrifice your health for a pizza that is two
dollars cheaper? Her strategy of making the point for organic food was very consistent

Water s Influence on Settements in Egypt
The settlement of a town had to take two main considerations into mind, the accessibility to a water
source and the height it was built above the flooding of the Nile. The mud brick buildings were
sensitive to water and damp conditions, so care had to be taken when considering the placement of a
house, town or city. When houses did crumble or fall apart, new houses were simply built upon the
ruins of the former house. This led to houses and towns being built on more elevated surfaces. These
hills are called tells. The permanent structures like temples and their surrounding enclosures are now
on a lower floor level this would be the original level as temples were not generally built or renewed
upon each other as the houses were. This method of building one house upon the other continued until
the building of the Aswan Dam in the late 1960 s, making excavations of the housing areas was
virtually impossible. This has left a scarcity of data for Egyptologists to study.
There are no more famous ancient sites within Egypt, or for that matter elsewhere in the world, than
the Great Pyramids at Giza. The pyramids of Giza have affected some tourists in beliefs and
personally/emotionally. They are, without question, the icon most associated with the Egypt. They
have been both the main destination for tourists, and a source of imaginative thought to the world for
over three thousand years. However, there are actually over 100 pyramids in Egypt, many of them are

Gender Discrimination And The Field Of Science
As a student coming from a purely humanities background, the idea that gender discrimination could
occur in the field of science as a concept was completely alien to me. However it has come to light
that gender discrimination in the field of science is not a myth but in fact a harsh reality for which the
reasons remain skewed.
As according to Linda S. Dix, it is not an easy matter to assess the magnitude of gender discrimination
and how that affects the careers of scientists, both men and women, positively and negatively.
Discrimination is often subtle and thus difficult to identify or locate. Due to its subtleness, it makes it
difficult to measure since it can be entwined with other forms of particularism like age. As a result
researchers have come to rely on indirect rather than direct measures of discrimination which was also
propounded by Harriet Zuckerman. Most researchers have come to agree that differences in career
attainments between men and women occur as an outcome of gender discrimination.
As per research gender provides a perspective from which one could examine the biases that exist in
the larger society. Some believe that to arrive at a more eloquent understanding of the problems of
women in science , one should begin by asking what is the nature of science space that leads to under
representation and marginalisation of women rather than questioning the situation of a woman s life
that makes it difficult for her to pursue science.
Thus, that gender

Hotel Literature Review

2.1 Why the hotel industry
The focus is on the hotel industry because; the geographical location of a hotel has a major impact on
its operations and profitability (Namasivayam, K., Enz, C. A.,
Siguaw, J. A. (2000). Furthermore geographical location of a hotel greatly determines the profile of its
visitors, the size of its market and the level of competition that it has to face. These three variables
also have a strong impact on the ICT adoption tendency of a hotel. This is because the ICT adoption
tendency of a hotel can be linked mainly to its expectations about the value addition that ICTs can
provide to its customers, as well as the belief about the expansion of its target market through ICTs. A

The Collapse Of The Russian Monarchy
Tsar Nicholas II is thought to be personally responsible for the collapse of the Russian Monarchy. His
nature wasn t well suited for the role he held therefore he was an incompetent leader. Russia was
undergoing many changes and was in early stages of industrialization. This was followed by an
embarrassing string of defeats of which the Tsar was badly prepared. His unsuccessful involvement in
the First World War added to the disappointment in the government s incompetence and corruption.
There were many opportunities for Russia to modernize but this would require political change, which
the Tsar was unwilling to do. Nicholas had many opportunities throughout his reign to reform, but
destroyed his last chance of survival.
Nicholas II was born on May 18, 1868 in Pushkin, Russia. Nicholas inherited the throne when his
father Alexander III died in 1894. Nicholas ascended the throne at the age of 26. He ruled an empire
covering about one sixth of the Earth s land area. Nicholas as tsar was autocrat of all Russia s , and
saw himself as chosen by God to fill the role. His empire was at peace and in the early stages of
industrialization, ranked among the worlds great powers. Nicholas believed it was his duty to continue
the autocracy that he inherited and stated, I shall uphold the principle of autocracy as firmly and as
undeviatingly as did my late father . Nicholas was a conservative leader with few of the skills needed
to effectively rule 132 million people. Nicholas was

St. John Berger s Ways Of Seeing
The visual arts have always existed within a certain preserve; originally this preserve was magical or
sacred. But it was also physical: it was the place, the cave, the building, in which, or for which, the
work was made. (Berger, 32) The quote originating from John Berger s Ways of Seeing portrays that
art is made to be preserved in its authentic context. Berger s quote purposes, seeing art in the context
which the art was made for is the only way you can experience the art the way it was made to be
experienced. With this specific quote in mind, walking through the doors of St. John s Cathedral is
comparable to walking into the sacred preserve of the stained glass windows, that immediately catch
your eye.
It is clear to see when you walk ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each of the clerestory stained glass windows would be considered representational art because they
each depict two great persons from the Bible. The windows on the South side of the building depict a
major story from the Old Testament of the Bible. While the windows on the North side of the building
depict major stories of the Old Testament. The large stained glass window above the high altar was
made to depict God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. The palette used for this window was heavy in blue,
red, and gold. These colors were used to represent the three in one aspect of God. Iconology is the
main element that is used to relate the pieces of art to each other in the building. ( Architecture )
/
But a work of art also suggests a cultural authority, a form of dignity, even wisdom, which is superior
to any vulgar material interest. ( Berger, 135) In this quote, John Berger proposes that art in a place
can change the effect the building as a whole radiates. I believe that Harold Whitehouse had this idea
in his mind when he decides the theme and placement of the windows. The windows let in a soft light
that plays a huge role in the effect of the Cathedral as a whole. The palette of all the windows creates
an almost royal effect when you walk inside.

  • 2. The Medical Promise Of Embryonic Stem Cells The Medical Promise of Embryonic Stem Cells Why should people suffer from diabetes, Alzheimer s, sickle cell anemia, leukemia, and plenty of other degenerative diseases while the cure lies in our hands? After James Thompson, a developmental biologist, reported that he had derived the first human embryonic stem cell line (Thomson), the potential of curing degenerative diseases was revealed. Ph.D. holder and deputy director of FDA s office of Cellular, Tissue and Gene Therapies, Stephanie Simek, explains that stem cells are unspecialized cells (qtd. in FDA Warns About Stem Cell Claims ). In other words, since they are unspecialized cells, they can ...generate lots of cells and, under the right conditions, become one of the many cell types ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The process when stem cells give rise to blood cells, or any other specialized cells, is called differentiation ( Stem Cell Basics ). Stem Cells ability of differentiation can be targeted and directed to generate tissue and therefore to cure degenerative diseases (Panno 24 28). However, such medical promise faces the doubts and gives rise to disputes. In fact, federal funds for stem cell research were banned under President Bush s administration, but the ban was then lifted by President Obama s administration (Obama). Despite the different arguments, more medical trials should be conducted with embryonic stem cells in order to determine whether the medical promise is applicable or far fetched. Richard Doeflinger, an official with the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, argues that we must not sacrifice one class of human being to benefit another (qtd. in Stem Cells ). However, ignoring the medical promise of embryonic stem cells would end up sacrificing real, living human beings for microscopic cells. Jean Peduzzi Nelson, the author of Adult Stem Cells Are Already Curing Diseases , argues that unlike embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells have already cured diseases. To support his argument, Nelson narrates the story of Joe Davis Jr. who suffered from a severe sickle cell anemia since birth. According to Nelson, At the age of two, Joe received an adult stem cell transplant; the adult stem ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Agricultural Equipment Industry And Culture On A... The agricultural equipment industry is one that is very important to the global market because it impacts both the United State s and Brazil s economies greatly. The balance of trade between the US and Brazil relies on the success of agricultural equipment as a whole. This paper will analyze the history of agricultural equipment and how machinery has impacted the farming industry and culture on a global scale, and continues to do so. History In order to gain an understanding of the agricultural equipment industry, we have to acknowledge the history in this area. In the 1920 s, most farmers practiced farming with horses pulling plows attached to them, which prepped the land for planting crops. Machines that picked crops had not been invented by the 1920 s, so farmers had to harvest their crops by hand. John Froelich invented of the first internal combustion traction motor, or tractor and had sold 20 of his tractors by 1914 through partnering with 8 investors from the Waterloo Gasoline Traction Engine Company. Eventually, John Deere purchased the first tractor company to ever exist in 1918, and paid $2,350,000 for it. Needless to say, John Deere has seen a large return on their investment. Although manufacturers such as John Deere in the United States had began to lead the way in building and assembling mechanized tractors, this luxury was not widely utilized by farmers around the country because tractors were both very expensive and limited. Eventually, tractors ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Washington Family Analysis The Washington Family by Edward Savage, painted from 1789 1796, features American s original First Family. (Fig. 1) George Washington sits around a table in his Mount Vernon home with his wife, Martha and her two grandchildren, whom the Washingtons adopted following the death of their parents. Behind them, a household slave stands ready to serve and a vast landscape sprawls outside the window. Though the painting appears to be a simple, family portrait, it actually contains deeper, political messages. Savage depicts George Washington in a domestic setting to showcase his personal life outside of the presidency; he is depicted with his family and in his private home. However, he is also shown in uniform, alluding to his role as general. He does not grasp his sword, but instead rests his hand on a stack of papers, representing his role as statesman. It was well known that Washington intended to step out of the public sphere following the war before being elected, and that he continued to long for a quiet life at home throughout his presidency. In this work, Savage depicts Washington filling roles of general, statesman and patriarch, making the statement that he can fulfil all three roles. Further, by depicting Washington as a father figure in his domestic setting, Savage invites his viewers to connect him with the founding of the nations and thus visually establish him as the Father of our country. Considering the popular print version of the work distributed around the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

At first arrival to Australia, my knowledge about history of Indigenous Australians and in particular about Stolen Generations was limited. • 7. Using Forensic Science to Identify Criminals Essay example Using Forensic Science to Identify Criminals Rape, murder, theft, and other crimes almost always leave a devastating mark on the victim. More often than not, it would be impossible to identify the perpetrator a crime without forensic science and the technology it uses. Forensic science allows investigators to unmask the secrets of the crime scene. Evidence gathered at the crime scene helps to identify the guilty party, murder weapon, and even the identity of the victim (Harkawy, 1991: 276). The new technologies enables the forensic experts to have better and faster access to accumulated information, to be more accurate in the identification of victims or delinquents, and minimizes the possibility of wrongful accusations. New technology ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Computerized databases allow unskilled police officers to search the national database of footwear for important information, such as shoe manufactures, or evidence that links the footprint to marks from other crimes scenes. This footwear database enables the investigating officers to gather evidence against the accused much faster and it is also saves precious time ( May, 1993:18). One of the oldest forms of identification is the use of fingerprints and with the use of today s technology, many corporations can use this type of technology to help prevent various frauds. For example, in the mid 1990 s Metro Toronto s Human Services Committee (MTHSC) proposed the use of a finger scanning system in order to prevent welfare fraud. People applying for welfare would have to place their index finger on a scanner. If their prints did not match those of someone already receiving benefits, they would be eligible for a debit card, which would allow them to withdraw monthly payments from any bank machine. This type of technology is not in use just yet, but it is available and would minimize welfare fraud (Sternbergh, 1996: 64). Computers are also highly used in forensic science. For instance, computer forensic, also referred to as forensic computer analysis or computer examination can be used in finding the evidence for white collar crimes. Many computer forensic experts can recover ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The paper is divided into many sections, each with a self explanatory title in capital letters, such as the section that immediately follows this sentence. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF MARMELADOV S RECOLLECTION SCENE Katerina Ivanovna must deal with a man who drinks his life away while his family starves. Marmeladov recounts their suffering by first describing his loss of a job. Marmeladov pathetically admits that he took all the families earnings to waste on alcohol, and even stooped so low as to stop at Sonia s to ask for a pick me up. THE INCONSISTENCY OF RASKOLNIKOV S NARRATION OF THE CRIME VERSES HIS PREPARATION. Roskolnikov s actual narration of the crime is definitely inconsistent with his preparation for the crime. From the pre ceding pages of the novel, we continually see Roskolnikov s careful premeditation and disgust at criminals who lose their senses and commit a crime that can easily be traced to themselves. Roskolnikov dwells on the fact that the extraordinary criminals pay attention to the details that can eventually lead to their downfall. He often comments: For this business one should be as little conspicuous as possible. . . . Trifles, trifles are what matter! Why, it s just such trifles that always ruin everything. . . . He spends days counting the number of steps it takes to reach his victims apartment (exactly 730), and meticulously wraps a fake, wooden pledge in cloth, constructs a noose to conceal the ax in his coat, and spends time memorizing where Alyona keeps her keys all for the sake of performing a perfect crime. Yet, when he does eventually place his plan into action: He was in a terrible haste, and he kept making mistakes. Roskolnikov runs into many complications when trying to complete his crime ... • 9. The Arnolfini Wedding Essay Jan van Eyck has been one of the more prominent early Netherlandish painters during his time. He has had many famous works, however one of his more interesting and questionable pieces is The Arnolfini Portrait. There is much to be desired in this painting by the great van Eyck. Van Eyck has been a master painter most of his career, but in this painting he is able to show how his excellent painting skills can bring this painting to life. The Arnolfini Portrait, which measures 82 × 59.5 cm (32.3 × 23.4 in) is an oil painting on oak panel dated 1434. It is even speculated that he may have went so far as to use a magnifying glass when working on these small details to ensure that they were as accurate as possible. This attention to detail has not only brought the painting to life, but from a researchers point it illustrated just how important this painting was for van Eyck to paint, and important the Arnolfini wedding may have been to him. It is said that van Eyck may have included himself in this painting. If you take a look into the far background reflected in the mirror there is a mysterious man on a turban. This easter egg inside the painting may have been deliberately placed there for several reasons. Van Eyck may have wanted the viewer to feel like they were standing with him while he was painting this image if it was indeed painted on the spot. Or it could simply have been inserted into the scene of the painting that could be completely fictional. Van Eyck has precisely placed everything in this painting in certain spots for a reason. He was very good at leading the viewer s eye in a way that made sense. In this painting the first thing that van Eyck wanted us to see was the famous mirror in the background so he deliberately placed it right in the center of the painting. This not only lets you see the whole room but also splits up the two subjects, Giovanni and his wife. Looking on form the painting to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This story is mainly based on the type of place where they live, his fondness toward his friend s sister, and the Araby(bazaar) where he wanted to go. According to the story the place they live sounds awful because as he mentioned The former tenant of our house, a priest, had died in the back drawing room (Joyce 86). I did not want this nightmare scenario for my family, so I started researching death with dignity .......I quickly decided that death with dignity was the best option for me and my family (Maynard). Maynard felt that undergoing a treatment for getting rid of the tumor would be more painful for her and her family. No one can give Brittany and her family a hundred percent guarantee that tumor would actually go away forever. Doctors confirmed that if Brittany goes under treatment, she will be the same person she was before treatment meaning that treatment will have side effects that might affect her for her entire life. Martin Espada and Richard Rodriguez have opposite views on the concept of bilingualism. Espada feels Latinos have the right to speak Spanish anywhere, considering language is intertwined with identity. Conversely, Rodriguez believes that to truly understand a language, you must forget the language that is already known to feel accepted in society. These ideas, similar to mine are not as simple as speaking two languages. To me the idea of bilingualism is respecting the two languages that are spoken by having the courage to speak them anywhere, at anytime. According to Martin Espada the idea of bilingualism is way deeper than just speaking two languages. Being bilingual to Espada means that both the languages spoken are intertwined with identity. This claim is constructed in his essay The New Bathroom Policy at English High School. He informs us of what he has learned about bilingual people in America: I have never met a single person who didn t want to learn English. The Effects Of Russian Culture On Military Operations The Effects of Russian Culture on Military Operations in That Region Introduction Understanding a country s culture as it pertains to military operations is highly important in the modern era. Dictionary.com defines culture as the behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a particular social, ethnic, or age group . There are many examples throughout history that show the negative consequences of ignoring or misunderstanding the cultures of other countries. The most recent example is our long sustained operations in the Middle East. We have operated in the Middle East for the better part of two and a half decades. Through our own successes and failures, it is obvious how important cultural awareness can be. The mistakes we have made have created more animosity towards our military and our country in general. Over the last decade, our government has worked continuously to understand and teach those lessons to our service members. Through those efforts, we have been able to win over many of the hearts and minds that we lost during the early part of the 1990 s and 2000 s. Continuing these practices in the future, with countries such as Russia, will allow us to overcome many of the mistakes and problems we have encountered in the past. Through The Crucible written by Arthur Miller, the readers could see how the Puritans reveal their strict beliefs in their lifestyle. Among those beliefs, the idea of unforgiven sins and the presence of the Devil in the community negatively affected the Puritans that caused the massacre at the Salem Village, Massachusetts in 1692. The Puritans believed that Satan is physically alive and secretly occupied the holy community. John Cotton, preeminent minister and theologian of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, insisted that: When a man wittingly and willing by commits any knowne sinne, he doth as actually give his Soule to the Devil, as a Witch doth her body and soule; we thereby renounce the covenant of God and Satan takes Possession of us. • 29. The Elements Of Lean Production THE ELEMENTS OF LEAN PRODUCTION In this part, the authors write about the steps of developing lean production by pointing out the assembly plants, the differences between lean and Ford s point of view, production procedures, the supply chain, the scheme of selling automobiles, and what lean needs to be perfect. Running the Factory. This chapter is written according to an investigation at IMVP World Assembly Plant. It is true that the car assembly workshops require a significantly large space with massive storage areas and railway systems. Besides, thousands of labors will work in a big and chaotic building with many noisy machines; consequently, this is such a significant problem for all automobile companies. The writers use the case of the IMVP World Assembly Plant to emphasize the three factors that persuaded them that assembly was the most essential part in the automobile manufacturing process. The first thing is that assembly is involved in most of the work in car industry. The next reason is all of the cars and light trucks today are manufactured in the same technique so that the assembly factories in the world almost do the similar work. Lastly, Toyota, in order of spreading the lean production, had built lots of assembly factory in both North America and Europe. Furthermore, a typical example of mass production at General Motor workshop in Massachusetts is used in order to illustrate the need of lean production in the Midwest of America. Subsequently, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She explains how pizza jogs her memories of birthday parties and sleepovers. However, her goal of writing this piece was not to educate the reader about her love for pizza, but to draw the reader into the piece of writing so she can give support for why organic food is better than conventional. The reader is able to connect with Sandra Steingraber with personal stories about her life and the happiness that pizza has given her. She is able to tell stories of college, becoming a mother, and even feeding her own children pizza. After she tells stories of how the pizza makes her happy, she remembers ... She is able to use facts that say that organic makes about nine dollars more than convectional per a hundred pounds. However, she continues by saying there have been studies that explain that conventional way of farming causes miscarriages, low sperm counts, premature birth, and birth defects. While conventional is cheaper than organic, however it saves peoples lives in the long run. She is able to use sources time and time again to support her argument. Mrs. Steingraber would make claims of the differences between wheat flour, olive oil, tomatoes and garlic; the ingredients of pizza. Indeed most of the conventional being cheaper time and time again, but she explains the differences and the way the ingredients are being treated. In conclusion for her argument with why organic is better, she continues to say how she wants to make not only the farming community better, but help save the ozone layer, prevent cancer, and protect drinking water. Her final thought is that the total cost of pizza organic is six dollars and eighty five cents. While conventional is four dollars and fifty cents, she wants to leave with the thought of would you want to sacrifice your health for a pizza that is two dollars cheaper? • 31. Water s Influence on Settements in Egypt The settlement of a town had to take two main considerations into mind, the accessibility to a water source and the height it was built above the flooding of the Nile. The mud brick buildings were sensitive to water and damp conditions, so care had to be taken when considering the placement of a house, town or city. When houses did crumble or fall apart, new houses were simply built upon the ruins of the former house. This led to houses and towns being built on more elevated surfaces. These hills are called tells. The permanent structures like temples and their surrounding enclosures are now on a lower floor level this would be the original level as temples were not generally built or renewed upon each other as the houses were. This method of building one house upon the other continued until the building of the Aswan Dam in the late 1960 s, making excavations of the housing areas was virtually impossible. This has left a scarcity of data for Egyptologists to study. There are no more famous ancient sites within Egypt, or for that matter elsewhere in the world, than the Great Pyramids at Giza. The pyramids of Giza have affected some tourists in beliefs and personally/emotionally. They are, without question, the icon most associated with the Egypt. They have been both the main destination for tourists, and a source of imaginative thought to the world for over three thousand years. However, there are actually over 100 pyramids in Egypt, many of them are relatively ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Gender Discrimination And The Field Of Science As a student coming from a purely humanities background, the idea that gender discrimination could occur in the field of science as a concept was completely alien to me. However it has come to light that gender discrimination in the field of science is not a myth but in fact a harsh reality for which the reasons remain skewed. As according to Linda S. Dix, it is not an easy matter to assess the magnitude of gender discrimination and how that affects the careers of scientists, both men and women, positively and negatively. Discrimination is often subtle and thus difficult to identify or locate. Due to its subtleness, it makes it difficult to measure since it can be entwined with other forms of particularism like age. As a result researchers have come to rely on indirect rather than direct measures of discrimination which was also propounded by Harriet Zuckerman. Most researchers have come to agree that differences in career attainments between men and women occur as an outcome of gender discrimination. As per research gender provides a perspective from which one could examine the biases that exist in the larger society. Some believe that to arrive at a more eloquent understanding of the problems of women in science , one should begin by asking what is the nature of science space that leads to under representation and marginalisation of women rather than questioning the situation of a woman s life that makes it difficult for her to pursue science. Thus, that gender ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Hotel Literature Review 2. Literature Review 2.1 Why the hotel industry The focus is on the hotel industry because; the geographical location of a hotel has a major impact on its operations and profitability (Namasivayam, K., Enz, C. A., Siguaw, J. A. (2000). Furthermore geographical location of a hotel greatly determines the profile of its visitors, the size of its market and the level of competition that it has to face. These three variables also have a strong impact on the ICT adoption tendency of a hotel. This is because the ICT adoption tendency of a hotel can be linked mainly to its expectations about the value addition that ICTs can provide to its customers, as well as the belief about the expansion of its target market through ICTs. • 34. The Collapse Of The Russian Monarchy Tsar Nicholas II is thought to be personally responsible for the collapse of the Russian Monarchy. His nature wasn t well suited for the role he held therefore he was an incompetent leader. Russia was undergoing many changes and was in early stages of industrialization. This was followed by an embarrassing string of defeats of which the Tsar was badly prepared. His unsuccessful involvement in the First World War added to the disappointment in the government s incompetence and corruption. There were many opportunities for Russia to modernize but this would require political change, which the Tsar was unwilling to do. Nicholas had many opportunities throughout his reign to reform, but destroyed his last chance of survival. Nicholas II was born on May 18, 1868 in Pushkin, Russia. Nicholas inherited the throne when his father Alexander III died in 1894. Nicholas ascended the throne at the age of 26. He ruled an empire covering about one sixth of the Earth s land area. Nicholas as tsar was autocrat of all Russia s , and saw himself as chosen by God to fill the role. His empire was at peace and in the early stages of industrialization, ranked among the worlds great powers. Nicholas believed it was his duty to continue the autocracy that he inherited and stated, I shall uphold the principle of autocracy as firmly and as undeviatingly as did my late father . • 36. St. John Berger s Ways Of Seeing The visual arts have always existed within a certain preserve; originally this preserve was magical or sacred. But it was also physical: it was the place, the cave, the building, in which, or for which, the work was made. (Berger, 32) The quote originating from John Berger s Ways of Seeing portrays that art is made to be preserved in its authentic context. Berger s quote purposes, seeing art in the context which the art was made for is the only way you can experience the art the way it was made to be experienced. With this specific quote in mind, walking through the doors of St. John s Cathedral is comparable to walking into the sacred preserve of the stained glass windows, that immediately catch your eye. It is clear to see when you walk ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each of the clerestory stained glass windows would be considered representational art because they each depict two great persons from the Bible. The windows on the South side of the building depict a major story from the Old Testament of the Bible. While the windows on the North side of the building depict major stories of the Old Testament. The large stained glass window above the high altar was made to depict God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. The palette used for this window was heavy in blue, red, and gold. These colors were used to represent the three in one aspect of God. Iconology is the main element that is used to relate the pieces of art to each other in the building. ( Architecture ) / But a work of art also suggests a cultural authority, a form of dignity, even wisdom, which is superior to any vulgar material interest. ( Berger, 135) In this quote, John Berger proposes that art in a place can change the effect the building as a whole radiates. I believe that Harold Whitehouse had this idea in his mind when he decides the theme and placement of the windows. The windows let in a soft light that plays a huge role in the effect of the Cathedral as a whole. The palette of all the windows creates an almost royal effect when you walk inside. ...
