Who Is Responding To The Wii
9 709 448 REV: JANUARY 4, 2010 ANDREI HAGIU HANNA HAŁABURDA Responding to the
Wii? Kazuo Hirai, chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI), had just gotten off a
conference call with journalists. It was late August 2008, and the reporters were inquiring about
Afrika, a new safari videogame for Sony s PlayStation 3 (PS3) console that allowed players to watch
wild animals and take virtual pictures. Hirai could not help feeling frustrated. Most of the conversation
like many others with Sony outsiders in the past month had revolved around two questions: Was
Afrika Sony s answer to the casual games that were partly responsible for the runaway success of rival
Nintendo s Wii videogame console? And more generally, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Responding to the Wii? Market Birth, Collapse, and Rebirthb The videogame industry got off to an
uncertain start in 1972, when television maker Magnavox introduced Odyssey, the first home
videogame console. Priced at $100 (the equivalent of $516 in 2008 dollars),c Odyssey needed a
television screen to project its very limited action. The system came with 12 games, including versions
of tennis and ping pong, each on a printed circuit board.5 However, partly due to some uninspired
marketing and distribution decisions, Odyssey s appeal proved limited. Magnavox sold more than
100,000 game systems by year end, but sales quickly declined and Odyssey was pulled from the
market.6 Enter Atari Around the same time, a young entrepreneur named Nolan Bushnell was
developing arcade games with the use of then new microprocessor technology.7 In 1972, the company
he started, Atari, launched its first hit game an arcade version of ping pong.8 In Pong, two players
batted a ball of light back and forth between on screen paddles. The game instructions were simple:
Avoid missing ball for high score. 9 Pong was an immediate success: 8,500 arcade consoles were sold
in the first year.10 Bushnell

How Steinbeck Presents the Relationship Between George and...
How Steinbeck presents the relationship between George and Lennie in particular at the beginning and
the end
The relationship between Lennie and George is very close throughout the book. Of Mice and Men is
set in the 1930s depression years in America. This means that their relationship was under a lot of
strain. It was unusual in those times to be able to sustain friendships because life was all about living
for the moment after America s great depression. They are in a place called the Salinas River near
Soledad.
John Steinbeck begins the novel Of Mice and Men with a picturesque description of the location
where the reader is first introduced to the characters of George Milton and Lennie Small. The opening
section of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lennie and George s dream is presented by Steinbeck in order to convey their relationship:
George. Tell me. Please, George. Like you done before
This dream cannot exist without friendship. This is most demonstrable in the relationship between
George and Lennie. Without the other, neither character would be able to maintain the dream. Lennie
is constantly asking George to tell about how it s gonna be . The constant repetition of the way things
will be is what keeps the dream alive in Lennie. However, George needs Lennie just as much as
Lennie needs him, which is apparent at the end of the novel. When George kills Lennie, he also kills
the friendship, which results in the death of the dream within himself. Friendship is an underlying
factor in the dreams of others as well.
From anger and remorse to a close friendship, Steinbeck portrays many different aspects to Lennie and
George s relationship. It is the main theme in this novel and stands out as a clear point the author is
trying to make. Their dream gives the reader an image of peacefulness between the two, they got each
other and living offa the fatta the lan , is their aim. They know that they wouldn t be able to achieve
this without each other, Lennie needs George to plan the dream and George needs Lennie to keep it
alive. In the end, the obstacles that Lennie has created are so terrible

The Effect Of Plasmid On Bacterial Gene Expression
The Effect of Plasmid Addition on Bacterial Gene Expression
Introduction
In the lab conducted, the main idea stemmed from the topics of genetic engineering and genetic
transformation. By definition, genetic engineering is the modification of an organism s genetic
composition by artificial means (Lerner). This often involves the micro insertion of genetic material.
Genetic transformation is the genetic alteration of cells resulting from the direct intake of genetic
material through the cell membrane (Transformation (genetics)). Both differ from other means of
genetically altering organisms due to engineering being able to occur between highly differing
organisms not of the same species, and transformation occurring at a molecular level ... Show more

The purpose of the pGLO lab was to better understand the process of DNA transformation in
organisms, and to observe how genes are then expressed after the transformation occurs under specific
circumstances. A species of E. coli was used in the experiment as the necessary form of bacteria. The
independent variable was the altered plasmids that were placed inside half of the collected bacteria,
which contained new genes such as the glow gene (GFP) from Aequorea victoria jellyfish, the switch
for the GFP, and/or antibiotic resistance (Ampr). The following dependent variable was then what
genes the bacteria expressed after it had either undergone transformation or not, which would be if it
glowed or survived exposure to antibiotic. Another independent variable was if the antibiotic
Ampicillin or arabinose sugar were present in the petri dish the bacteria were later grown in. The
dependent variable was if the bacteria survived the exposure to Ampicillin. There were four groups
used in each experiment. The positive control group consisted of bacteria that would be grown in an
Luria broth (LB) with no additional plasmids or exposure to Ampicillin or arabinose. The negative
control group was one consisting of bacteria grown in a LB and Ampicillin dish with no genetic
transformation. The two experimental groups were then one group where bacteria underwent genetic
transformation and were

Thesis For A P By John Updike
Essay 1: A P Have you ever seen people just talk about the point of view as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person?
Well the point of view is more important than you might think, the point of view sets the whole story
together because without the point of view we wouldn t be able to know who is talking or how the
main character feels. A P is a great example of point of view . (Thesis statement) In this
short/Humorous story, A P , John Updike includes lots of details on how the viewer s perspective of
the situation matters since the situation mostly surrounds the speaker throughout the story and main
details happen because of them and involves them. Sammy, the main character talking in the story,
gives lots of details to what he sees and what he thinks. He describes the three girls (Queenie, Plaid,
and Big Tall Goony Goony) as wearing only bikinis, how their face looked, and how they act. Sammy
notice all the features of the three girls and explained it very understandable. The one that caught my
eye first was the one in the plaid green two piece. She was a chunky kid, with a good tan and a sweet
broad soft looking can with those two crescents of White under it, where the ... Show more content on

Sammy also ends up talking about what they were doing around the store and then the 3 girls go up to
Sammy s checkout lane. Sammy seems to like Queenie, and we only know that because he s the
speaker and if he wasn t the speaker we wouldn t know if he likes Queenie or not. For example, if the
story s speaker was Lengel, then we wouldn t have heard about the three girls looking for something
to buy and what their description was. Lengel didn t arrive to A P until later into the story so he didn t
know about Stokesie messing around with Sammy, or that Sammy was looking at the girl s every
move, or that Sammy kept

Characteristics Of A Discourse Community
The human identity is worn as a mask with shapeshifting capabilities and espionage. In the real world,
this mask appears simplistic; however, the internet is an abstract space of node connections that
streams a wild flurry of ideas, people, and identities. One s mask does not need a definition to stand
firmly in this chaos but merely need to express what is hidden beneath the mask: humanity. That is
what it means to have the right to anonymity, the freedom of expression and the right to be protected
from outside entities who will stop at nothing to forcefully seize the mask along with physical data.
One discourse community dedicated to protecting the rights to anonymity is the Tor Project, a
worldwide group that helps create an anonymous browser to hide identity details and participates in
establishing it in journalism, academia, activism, and normal users. The exploration of the rights of
anonymity will be examined through the discourse community characteristics of Tor by reviewing
Porters and Swales works in discourse communities, by using methods of primary investigation
through interviewing Tor members, and discussing how Tor fits into Swales six characteristics of a
discourse community.
Literature Review
Two definitive works done by Swales and Porter has helped established on the definition and criteria
of a discourse community. While Swales was the primary source of information for Porter s own
piece, Porter can develop a more in depth view on discourse communities.

How The Machine War Changed Modern Warfare
The Greatest War, also known as World War I began on 28 July 1914. At the time, warfare was not
very sophisticated and very rudimentary, but with the advent of several key pieces of technology
ended up causing most battlefields to use trench warfare and constant stalemates of just a few yards of
precious land. The invention of the airplane, which is widely credit to the Wright brothers in 1903,
gave the military a glimpse of what could be. The tank under development by the British during 1914
through 1918 and did not see combat until 1916. Machine guns in use prior to WWI but not effectedly
used until Germans had started using covered sectors of fire. With just these four pieces of new
warfare, it showed the world as a whole that the future ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was not until 1903 when two bicycle shop owners eventually created way to leave the earth behind.
Once military leaders saw this, their imaginations ran wild with the possibility of this newfound
freedom. The ability to spy on enemy positions, bombing them from above without too much ground
resistance, as well as the ability to create fear among the trenches on both sides . At first, they tried
several different ways to mount machine guns; they strapped them with leather at one point, which
required an additional person needed on the aircraft to fire the gun. Tried mounting them above the
pilot, on the upper wing to avoid shooting off the props, which was extremely inaccurate. It was not
until the invention of the interrupter gear were they able to successfully able to begin to fire a machine
gun without causing self harm to their own aircraft. The best known aircraft during this period was the
Fokker Eindecker, which had introduced the synchronized machine guns and provided Germany with
air superiority for a small period of time (Angelucci, E., The Rand McNally Encyclopedia of Military

I Love My Pet Animals
Sharing our lives, opening our hearts to pure unconditional love. They are the best friends that we can
ever have. They won rsquo;t let us down, they are always happy to see us, they don rsquo;t judge us in
any form, they don rsquo;t look at us with utter disdain if we put on weight. They trust us implicitly,
with a wag of a tail or the twitch of a whisker telling us that they intuitively know how we feel. The
look in their eyes says it all ndash; I love you.
Our companion animals, our pets. We, as humans think that we have chosen our pets, in many
situations it seems as if we have. However, many times on a higher level of awareness, they have
chosen us. How many times do you see people that look like their dogs or is it that their dogs look like
them! The feline fellowship and affinity that comes from the cats that slink into our lives helps us
attune to life.

Even though I call myself a dogaholic, I love all animals big and small!
There is one other fact of life that cannot be ignored. The emotional earthquake of grief when your

irrelevant whether the pet is four legged, two legged, furry or feathered. Grief is grief, loss is loss. The
feelings are the same, the challenges are no less.
The manifestation of the grief process is different for everyone, but the root cause is the same. It

different dimension of your inner being that perhaps you never knew existed. There are people who

Debating Whether Nuclear Power Should Be Developed for Future Energy Supplies
Introduction
I am writing this essay to debate the idea of having nuclear power developed for future use by us. This
takes on a major issue and covers many aspects of our nations energy use both in present and for the
future.
When we think about nuclear power we do not automatically think of it as a non renewable energy
source. This is because it is not part of the fossils fuels; coal, oil and gas, which we all know will not
last us as reliable energy sources for much longer. However, nuclear power is a non renewable energy
source and has many dedicated power stations located around the UK. Nuclear energy is ... Show

Nuclear fission takes place inside the core by which the isotope splits using the atoms in the uranium
dioxide from the pellets. The immense heat produced by this is carried away by fluid circulating
through the reactor core. Once the fluid becomes heated it is used to produce steam, this steam drives
the turbines which in turn rotate the main electricity generators to produce clean, reliable electricity.
During this process there is a massive amount of radiation and so this is why the core is surrounded by
a thick concrete shield to absorb this radiation.
Arguments FOR using and developing nuclear power
To satisfy our general needs of heating our water, heating our homes, cooking our food, powering our
appliances and lighting our rooms, we need to retrieve energy from the many many methods available
to us. One of these choices is nuclear energy. There are very good reasons why it should be considered
and developed further, to be used in the future. Firstly, by comparing it to the other non renewable
energy sources (coal, oil and natural gas), nuclear power is a very clean energy as it does not produce
any of the greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, which lead to the greenhouse effect or global
warming. This problem is significant for the disintegration of the ozone layer when fossil fuels are
burnt to release energy. Plus using this form of energy can

Victorian morality describes the moral views and social expectations of people living at the time of
Queen Victoria s rule from 1837 to 1901 which completely contrasted any morality in pervious eras.
Victorians encouraged hard work, morality, social respect and religious conformity. Today, the term
Victorian morality can describe any set of values that exercise sexual restraint, intolerance of
criminality and a strict social code of conduct. The word Victorian has a wide range of connotations,
most specifically the high moral standards, but today the Victorian era is usually associated with
prudishness and repression .

The response was a sustained social effort to intimidate, shame and drive fallen women off the street

Families were considered the most important to Victorians. Families were large relative to the modern
family; it is typical to have five or six children. Upper and middle class families usually lived in big
and comfortable houses. Each member in a separate area and the parents made sure the children were
taught to know their place . For parents, the education of their children was the most important
responsibility. They believed that a child must know ethics to become a proper adult. A common
saying in that time was Spare the rod and spoil the child . The family system is very much patriarchal:
male dominated. However, challenges to attitudes towards sexual relations and the role of women are
posed by New Woman .
In the Victorian Era women were seen as fitting in the domestic sphere , and this stereotype required
them to provide their husbands with a clean home, food and the ability to raise children. Women were
expected to be obedient, devoted and possess extreme levels of maternal care. The New Woman,
however, was a feminist ideal that rose in the late nineteenth century which had a significant influence
on feminism directly into the twentieth century. The term New Woman was invented to describe the

A Research Report On Zeus Botnet
Aim of this report is to build Zeus botnet in a test lab to understand its workings, applications and
risks.
Zeus, or as it is known under its other name Zbot or Trojan.Zbot is a Trojan horse that steals
confidential information of a user from a compromised computer (Ben Nahorney, 2014). At this stage
it can be downloaded from the internet and built for free at home (older versions) by using a building
tool called Trojan Builder, while new versions can be purchased (ibid). There are many different
versions of Zeus on the internet such as Citadel or GameOver Zeus. Once properly configured Zeus
botnet gives the attacker a high level of control over the functionality of infected computers (ibid).
It is distributed by spam and drive by downloads and is concerned with in particular to gather user s
banking credentials, logons, passwords and credit card information but can be customized to gather
other types of information also (ibid). It automatically gathers any internet explorer, FTP or POP3
passwords contained within Protected Storage using different methods (ibid). Most commonly used
method is monitoring websites included in configuration file allowing to intercept legitimate websites
and insert extra fields to get more data from the user (leaving user unaware throughout) (ibid). Also by
being infected, that computer becomes a part of a botnet that makes it available to perform any
requests of the attacker(s) (ibid).
Zeus is believed to be originating from the Russian

The Effect Of Body Cameras On Use Of Force Incidents
Methods I wish to replicate the methodology utilized by Ariel, Farrer, and Sutherland (2015). These
researchers conducted a randomized controlled study with the Rialto Police Department in California.
The purpose of their study was to observe the effects of body worn cameras on the frequency of use of
force incidents as well as citizens complaints. In my research study, I will test only the effect of body
worn cameras on use of force incidents. I propose to study the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police
Department in Indianapolis, Indiana. This research setting is a lot larger than Ariel, Farrer, and
Sutherland s study. The Rialto Police Department covered an area of approximately 28.5 square miles,
and they served a population of approximately 100,000 residents. IMPD covers an area of
approximately 364.3 square miles, and serves approximately 824,000 residents. Rialto has 115 sworn
officers whereas IMPD has 1,080 sworn officers (IMPD n.d.). I propose to divide IMPD s six districts
in half. Three districts will be the treatment group while the other three districts will be the control
group. This should be approximately 540 total officers per group. The districts will be randomly
assigned to either by a treatment or a control group, and it will change weekly. For example, the North
District may be a treatment group one week and a control group the next week. I feel that if the
department is split up and randomly assigned a group each week that the data will be more

Ethical Dilemma And Moral Dilemma
GNED 212 Jorawar Singh 30877727 Section 004 Date/Time of Class Wednesday 3:30 PM Part 1
Ethical/Moral Dilemma: Defination Ethical dilemma or moral dilemma is a scenario in which a person
has to make choices/decisions depending on the situation or by keeping the net happiness in his mind.
He also thinks about the consequences of the decision he will make. In this scenario, I will be
describing an ethical dilemma that I faced when I worked with an IT firm. My team leader was
stealing from the company. He used to steal the network cable and other networking tools from the
company storage unit. I started to dig this matter and I came to know that after stealing, he was selling
that tools into local market. It was his side business and he was earning pretty good. But one day, there
was a surprise inventory check conducted by our manager. In that report a huge amount of losses were
there. So a notice was issued to all employee regarding the inside stealing and we were asked to give
the other person name and our name would be not disclosed. At that point of time I faced an ethical
dilemma, whether to give the name of my team leader with a fear of losing my job or whether to keep
quiet and let him steal more stuff till no one catches him. Part 2 Philosophical model: To solve my
ethical dilemma, I will be using Deontology as my philosophical model. Deontology is a Greek word
originated from Deon meaning obligation/morality or duty. It is

unconstitutional to the country. The Egyptian Revolution of 1919 can be justified as an act of civil
disobedience because of Britain s protectorate and martial law for Egypt and Sudan, for causing false
belief that the protectorate would be changed after the war, and for seizing the country s infrastructure.
The rebellion against the Britain Empire began after the Caucasus Campaign of World War I and
Britain declared Egypt the burden of war; it was then that the ... Show more content on

Lord Alfred Milner of Britain was sent to Egypt in December of 1919, he later left March of 1920 and
advised that Britain abolish the protectorate and grant Egypt complete independence. He saw the
hostile stance of the Egyptian people as uncontrollable and believed Britain would not be able to
continue to pursue its interests, given such public opinion. When Britain decided to send the colonial
administrator, Egyptians responded to the Milner Mission to get rid of Lord Milner and to confound
the judicial system. Thousands of nationalists met at Alexandria s mosque Abu l Abbas al Mursi;
ministers, lawyers, counsels, and students proposed strategies against the British rule Egypt.
According to the report by Under Secretary of the Foreign Office Cecil Harmsworth to the House of
Commons, 800 natives were killed and 1,600 women wounded during the uprising. It states that
casualties for European and other civilians were 31 killed and 35 wounded, while 29 British soldiers
were killed and 114 wounded. So there were 209 European casualties to 2,400 Egyptian. The Under
Secretary of the Foreign Office provided a clear understanding of how many natives of Egypt died for
their independence; clearly there were very few British casualties which shows how much the
Egyptians were willing to give up, to have what they gravely

Plato Moderation Research Paper
Moderation is key. Plato talks of moderation as nature harmony between good and bad influences. He
states that while bravery and wisdom can be found here and there, that moderation encompasses all.
The last line of 432 A is that moderation is found in a community as well as in the individual. Plato
starts out his argument, paragraph 431, discussing the humor of self control, how one can be both the
weak and the controller. He goes on to discuss how one has mastery of himself or fails himself,
depending on how weak the influences of good are. It is this that sparks his thoughts on the surplus of
desires to be found in the hearts of men. The influence of the few over the many is seen in paragraph

The Great Chilean Earthquake On Chile
Earthquakes throughout the world have devastated certain areas of the world, some places more than
others. One area of the world that has been absolutely devastated by many earthquakes throughout
time is the South American country, Chile. While there have been many very substantial earthquakes
in Chile, one stands out most, The Great Chilean Earthquake. On May 22, 1960, The Great Chilean
Earthquake hit Chile. This is the largest earthquake ever recorded with a magnitude of 9.5 out of 10.0.
It absolutely traumatized the country of Chile and surrounding areas. Just the earthquake itself wasn t
the only thing doing damage, the quake caused monstrous tsunamis across the coast of Chile and it
even caused tsunamis in Hawaii, Japan, and the Philippines. For an earthquake to not only cause mass
destruction to the area of the quake, but to strongly affect other places, just goes to show how
powerful The Great Chilean Earthquake was. Not only has Chile have to deal with this great
earthquake, Chile has been hit with almost 30 8.0 earthquake throughout time that we know of. Chile
also has 2 of the top 10 biggest earthquakes ever recorded. The Great Chilean Earthquake and the the
amount of big earthquakes Chile has to deal with, definitely affects how the Chilean people live
everyday, they have to live in fear that the next Big One could devastate their country again.
The Great Chilean Earthquake was caused when the Nazca Plate subducted under the South American

China s Lack Of Effective Enforcement Of Labor Laws Essay
Printed on clothing tags or the back of most packaging are the commonly found words: Made in China
. Large corporations such as Apple or Microsoft continue to outsource more of their production
overseas to subcontractors in China. There have been various stories and rumors of Chinese workers
being exploited by their wealthy factory owners and supervisors. Working conditions may appear to
be improving in China, but most people are not able to view what is happening overseas. There are
hazardous conditions as well as death and suicide in sweatshops that produce goods for these large
corporations, particularly Apple, Microsoft, Dell, and Nike. These multinational corporations are
motivated to obtain large profits by taking advantage of China s lack of effective enforcement of labor
laws.
China s history of sweatshops and factories has grown because of economic motives and government
conditions. Multinational corporations such as Apple or Microsoft are large corporations that sell
goods and services throughout the world (O Sullivan 456). To maximize profits, these corporations
have to find ways to cut corners and reduce input costs. All of this is done to provide the cheaper
prices that American consumers enjoy. Asian subcontractors do not provide their workers with the
benefits and wages that are found in the U.S. In China, wages are much lower, labor movements are
repressed, and labor laws are not enforced effectively ( Working Conditions ). Many Chinese workers

HEALTH EFFECTS OF HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING ON TYPE 2 DIABETES
Many people suffer from type 2 diabetes, a type of metabolic disease (Curry et al., 2015; Hawley
Gibala, 2012). The prevalence of this disease has been increasing; one reason for this increase could
be increased consumption of food as well as decreased prevalence of physical activity (Hawley
Gibala, 2012). Patients with type 2 diabetes are not able to metabolise glucose properly (Curry et al.,
2015). Type 2 diabetes can cause patients to be very thirsty, excessively weary, and to experience a
broad variety of other symptoms (Tovi Engfeldt, 1998). It is often treated with insulin in order to help
the body metabolise glucose (Tovi Engfeldt, 1998). However, taking insulin can result in weight gain
(Tovi Engfeldt, 1998). Fat of the abdomen can be an indicator of the likelihood of developing
cardiovascular disease in an individual with type 2 diabetes, which is heavily correlated with type 2
diabetes (Siren, Eriksson, Vanhanen, 2012). In terms of lifestyle choices, type 2 diabetes patients are
often told to focus on diet, but are also encouraged to increase frequency of physical activity (Alvarez
et al., 2016; Hawley Gibala, 2012). Physical activity has been shown to decrease the amount of deaths
resulting from diabetes related causes (Church et al., 2004). Increased physical activity has been
shown to help glucose metabolism in patients with type 2 diabetes (Curry et al., 2015). People who

Momentous Gender Selection
One of life s profound moments is that of a mother s caressing gaze into the eyes of her first born
child. Only a minority of mothers who conceive genetically impaired children face an alternative
world of heartbreak and melancholy.
It s a beautiful thing to conceive life s bundle of joy, and another to conceive a child suffering from
genetic disorders. Inheriting altered genes through autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, X linked
dominant and X linked recessive are potential leads to genetic disorders in offspring (Health Direct
Australia, 2014).

scientific research, committed to overcoming this biological issue. Over decades of momentous ...

Imbalance of genders occur when one gender is outstanding in number to that of the other gender; for
example, if there were many more males to females. Gender imbalance is calculated by the sex ratio,
that is the ratio of males to females in a population (World Health Organisation, 2015). China and
India are evidence of where gender imbalance has occurred. In both countries, there are specific
customs and cultural stereotypes that are strictly adhered to. China perceive males to be more valuable
than female due to religious beliefs, labour, and financial support; The Chinese have traditionally
preferred sons because of their potential to financially support their parents, carry on the family name,
and lead ancestor worship (Hsu, 2008). India s ideology of male preference is based on the education
of women; women s education is the single most significant factor in reducing son preference (Rohini
Pande, 2006). It s clear that China and India have experienced gender imbalance due to cultural
gender preferences. The American Medical Association argues that gender imbalance is less likely to
happen in the Western world (American Medical Association, 2003

Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
On March 25, 1911, a fire broke out on the top floors of the 10 story Asch Building in lower
Manhattan, New York. A fire that killed 146 of the 500 employees of the Triangle Shirtwaist Company
in what was considered one of the worst industrial disasters in the nation s history at that time. All
died due to inadequate safety precautions and lack of fire escapes. This research paper will examine
how this tragic fire changed the working labor laws as well as work safety and woman s rights.
The Triangle factory, owned by Max Blanck and Isaac Harris, was located in the Asch Building, on
the corner of Greene Street and Washington Place, in Manhattan. There were four elevators with

Many rooms that only occupied 100 people often had 200 plus people working, machines were all
over the place and there were only 1 or 2 staircases, an elevator and one fire escape. All American
industrial workers worked an average of 54 hours a week. The 10 hour, 6 days a week became the
norm for workers. The triangle shirtwaist needs to be a constant reminder so that labor treaties no
longer occur.
By 1938 the Fair Labor Standard Act was probably one of the strongest change makers that were
produced due to the fire by establishing minimum wage, overtime pay, record keeping and youth
employment standards affecting full time and part time workers in the separate region and in federal,
state and local governments. FLSA also set wages at the same rate and paid women for overtime as
well prevented child labor until the age of 16 and older with limited working hours and jobs that
children can work.
By this moment sweatshops were wiped out. Within three years more than 36 state laws had been
passed. Even today, sweatshops have not disappeared in the United States. They keep attracting
workers today in desperate need of employment and undocumented immigrants, who may be anxious
to avoid involvement with governmental agencies. Recent studies conducted by the U.S. Department
of Labor found that 63% of New York garment factories violate minimum wage and overtime

Psychological Testing and Assessment of Adolescents
An assessment involves administering and interpreting psychological tests and integrating this with
current and past symptoms, observations, information about developmental, biological, social,
educational, and life experiences (Kirst Ashman Hull, 2006). Educational assessments of adolescents
are based on obtaining a profile of the child s learning weaknesses as well as his or her strengths.
When an educational assessment is performed on the adolescent, a counselor can determine academic

Raven s Progressive matrices are tests that are used as an intelligence test and are often used as a

is the Non verbal test Gesell Developmental Schedules for very young children ( Knobloch

One important thing that I learnt from this skill is that sometimes you might not need to speak a lot or
try to speak all the time, but the important thing is that you should try to see which actor shares the
same opinion as you and whether that actor is strong enough to act on your behalf. This was really
obvious in the activity of multilateral negotiations on negotiating intervention in a civil conflict where
I played Iraq. I found that Iraq shared a lot in common with the Arab states, especially Iran on the
Syrian issues. Balancing interests in the negotiation through the Arab countries helped Iraq protect its
interests. Without speaking much, but allying very well with Iran and balancing the interests with the
Arab states, it turned out that I gained the highest score in my group.
However, there was one thing I found quite unrealistic about this activity. That was the rule on
unanimous agreement. I do not think this can be applied in the real world situation. I think that it
would be better if we do not need to stick on this. The unanimous rule made some players concede too
much, and that did not reflect real international negotiations. The role play on Six party talks was both
fun and useful. This role play gave me a chance to practice more skills on negotiation and chairing.
This activity really showed the difficulties of negotiations on issues that are really critical to national
survival. The North Korean issue was very

light on how France may be homogeneous and fragmented. Two oppose groups are thus created, the
Girondins and the Jacobins. There are many differences between the Girondins and the Jacobins as

The government should be second to the people, no matter what the orders were. The Jacobins get
their name from the Jacobin Monastery where they frequently met. They wanted a centralized

result. The minister of War, Pache switched from the Girondins to the Jacobins in 1972, and just a year

Jean Rhys s Wide Sargasso Sea Essay
In Jean Rhys s novel Wide Sargasso Sea, Edward Rochester can be considered as an embodiment of
patriarchal and colonial oppression. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, patriarchal means,
relating to, characteristic of, or designating a society or culture in which men tend to be in positions of
authority and cultural values and norms are seen as favouring men... ( Patriarchal ) moreover colonial
means of, belonging to, or relating to a colony... ( Colonial ). In addition, oppression means prolonged
cruel or unjust treatment or exercise of authority, control, or power; tyranny; exploitation ( Oppression
). In order to discuss Edward s role in patriarchal and colonial forms of oppression, his marriage, and
emotional connection to Antoinette, symbolic representation, and cultural differences will be analysed
and discussed, focusing on any evidence of both forms of oppression.
Through Edward s marriage to Antoinette, one can see his colonial British background and how this
influences his role as an embodiment of patriarchal oppression. For instance, Edward is looking to
take the stature of a matured and wealthy, independent male by British standards (Kendrik 235). In
order to achieve this Edward needs to present as a dominant and independent husband in possession of
a submissive and dependant wife. This leads Edward into never completely accepting Antoinette as an
equal as he views her as a prized possession obtained through marriage; her beauty and wealth

Monologue In The Messenger
Markus Zusak s, The Messenger features the protagonist Ed Kennedy, and how he completed each
mission of aces; diamonds, clubs, spades and hearts. The suit of spades was symbolic to Ed s overall
mission as Ed had to dig through truths about himself. Before the suit of spades Ed s thought of
himself was that he was worth nothing, evident through the narration of Ed s monologue. The suit of
spades saw Ed wanting more for his life, evident through the characterisation of Ed, the changes in his

That if he wanted to be better, happy and loved he first would have to see himself in a happy, loved
and better light. Each mission saw Ed bring something to someone else but spades was the final trial I
need to dig myself out of (282). Therefore spades was symbolic as it saw Ed change his opinion on
himself, recognising that he had to do something, if he wanted to be more than nothing. I d rather
chase the sun than wait for it (306), and If I ever leave this place... I ll make sure I m better here first
(307). Both these quotes show how Ed s mind frame has shifted from accepting that he was nobody to
wanting to be something. The use of the pronoun I emphasises the fact that Ed accepts that he has to
do it himself. It shows how Ed realises that he is the only that can do it, that he cannot rely on anyone
else. This want for changing himself meant Ed s view on himself was not to scrutinise but rather
realise. Realisation in that driving a cab and renting a fibro shack can t be the final answer of my life.

about it. The aim of the Ace of Spades, was to lay the foundation of realisation that if Ed wanted to
change he would have to do it himself. That in order to become somebody to others, he would have to
become somebody to himself. Other people only started to recognise how Ed s change, after the ace of

Futility, Spring Offensive And Exposure By Wilfred Owen
Eco critics ask questions such as whether or not Everything is connected to everything else , in order
to explore the realms of human thought. In relation to Wilfred Owen s poems; Futility, Spring
Offensive, and Exposure, this theory that all living things are interconnected is a multifaceted one.
Nature is used heavily as a centralised motif in each of them, albeit in different ways, in order to
represent a range of both internal and external battles Owen s soldiers are forced to undergo during
active service in the war. The soldiers are also depicted to depend on, as well as exploit their rural
surroundings in equal measure, particularly concerning military action. As a concept, ecocriticism is a
contemporary approach and it is therefore highly unlikely that Owen would have intentionally
included such heavily cited links with eco criticism, especially considering that he claimed his subject
to be, war and the pity of war . Owen himself believed that the war he was fighting was needless, and
only caused pain and suffering. His work sheds light on the harsh, brutality of warfare whilst
challenging the patriotic nature of other existing war poems at the time, believing that they did not
truly depict the war he was all too familiar with, true Poets must be Truthful . However, applying
Owen s work through an ecological perspective is not a completely futile, as Owen s depth of
understanding can provide us with insight into the effect humans, particularly soldiers, had on their
biosphere during this period in history and vice versa; this is, The fundamental premise that human
culture is connected to the physical world, affecting it and affected by it. It is these connections with
the natural world that highlight both Owen s love of the natural world, influenced by the likes of
Romanticist poet John Keats, and his sense of anguish towards humanity and their distorted concept of
war.
The obscure relationship between man and environment is addressed abundantly throughout each of
the throughout the three poems, as it is made apparent that Owen tended to use pathetic fallacy as a
motif to reflect the internal conflicts of the soldiers. When the weather is peaceful, the soldiers are too,
as seen briefly in

Canadian Bilingualism Essay
A nation is made up of people with similar beliefs, ethnic backgrounds, values, histories, cultures, and
languages. In many ways, a nation should be a foundation of identity, depending on what it is, to the
extent that individuals also have their independent characteristics.
The linguistic aspect of a nation can impact its citizens. For example, China includes any dialects of
Chinese language and Mandarin is one of the most spoken languages. Languages are what bind people
together socially and personally. Language is what allows people to have an individual identity. On the
other hand, Canada has two dominant languages, English and French and these languages have

Culture is closely related to ethnicity, although they are not the same thing. For example, Aboriginals
might be united ancestrally, but Inuit culture is different compared to Iroquois culture and Cree
culture. Canada is known as a multination state, meaning that Canada does not support any culture
over another. When immigrants come to Canada, they are free to express their culture and values in
public. This multiculturalism also makes Canada unique.
Some factors of nations can directly affect their citizen, like language, while other factors only affect
them through exercise. Patriotism is an example shown through love for one s country. For example,
people can show patriotism through joining Canada s armed forces or respecting their national
anthem. One can even criticize their government s actions or policies, if they are seen wrongly, to
show patriotism.
Religion is used in nations to unify citizens and create the collective identity. For example, Hinduism
is a dominant religion in India, which gives India a sense of identity. However, religion can also divide
people, because it might brew conflict. An example being the crisis in Syria, where there is conflict
between Muslims and the other minority religions. People also may have spiritual connections to their
land, the Aboriginals of Australia they have spiritual connections to their land. To the aboriginals, their

Raising The Bar Analysis
So Jon Taffer, the guy who does the show Bar Rescue, wrote an extremely insightful book into what
he thinks makes a successful bar and it s titled Raising the Bar I picked it up a couple years ago but I
decided to read it again and the very first chapter is titled You Sell One Thing: Reactions So in this
chapter, Jon goes on and talkes a lot about how the number one thing that business owners fail to
realize is that it s not enough to just have a business that s running, rather you need to have a business
that leaves a good and positive impression on people to truly succeed. Here s a paragraph from it that I
really enjoy: Think about this: Two people get dressed in the morning. One person throws on whatever
clothes are available; the other takes the time to select an outfit and make sure it s clean, pressed, and
put together. WHo makes the better impression? The carefully dressed person is thought of as calmer,
more powerful, smarter, and more thoughtful than the sloppy one. In an experiment to test perceptions
and appearance, teaching assistants who wore formal clothes were perceived as more intelligent than
those who dressed more casually. A Harvard study found that women who wore makeup were
considered more competent and likable than their barefaced counterparts. ... Show more content on

Hepatitis C And C. C
When a doctor uses the term Hepatitis C or HCV, what comes to mind? Many people have little to no
knowledge of what it is. Is it deadly? Is there a cure? Is it a virus or disease? There are many questions
that enter the mind because there are many concerns associated with an unknown illness. Several
people wonder if the virus is similar to hepatitis A or B because there has been education throughout
the years that provides more awareness surrounding the two known viruses, but it is discovered there
are vast differences. Until recently, the general population was unaware that another hepatitis virus
acts as a silent killer. Unlike hepatitis A or B, hepatitis C is a relatively new disease that can go
unnoticed until it is too late. The virus was initially named non A, non B hepatitis because the virus
was identified through numerous blood tests in the 1960s and 1970s ( Hepatitis C History ). The virus
was given the name hepatitis C in the 1980s when the Center for Disease Control was able to identify
the virus ( Hepatitis C FAQ ). It was identified that the virus enters the human body by entering
through blood or bodily fluids and nestles in its permanent home of the liver. This virus is a highly
infectious bloodborne pathogen that can cause cirrhosis of the liver and in some cases turn into liver
cancer. At this time, there is no cure once the virus has been transmitted. Even though the transmission
rate is low, the first step in attacking the virus is to educate people on

General Electric Decline
General Electric s stock prices had been on a long decline for several years, which began around the
9/11 terrorist attack. General Electric has been called a financial company by several investors and
businesses, and the financial segment of their company is what actually caused a decline in General
Electric s stock prices. Several bad events and disasters have been occurring since the 9/11 terrorist
bombing and life has only gotten worse for the world. Bad events and disasters had hurt General
Electric immensely, as General Electric s financial segment, or GE Capital, was heavily reliant on
insurance profits. With all the bad events occurring, General Electric was having to give insurance
payments back to the people who needed it, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Immelt is trying to hire new young employees that know about technology and can easily learn how to
use newer technology. General Electric is still working out issues with GE Capital and Immelt is
continuing to remove problem segments from GE Capital. Immelt has declared that ideally only $10
billion of GE s revenue should come from its financial departments, and that most of the revenue will
come from General Electric s other important departments, such as GE Aviation, GE Oil Gas, and GE
Power. One of the largest initiatives that General Electric is currently taking is what they call
Industrial Internet. The Industrial Internet is a term that General Electric uses to [refer] to the
integration of complex physical machinery with networked sensors and software. Basically, the
Industrial Internet is using electrical sensors and software from the internet and adapting it to
machines, an example of a product, made by another company, that would have used the term
Industrial Internet is the google smartcar. An important issue within General Electric is that upper
level employees are making millions of dollars, while workers don t receive so much. In 2014, Jeffrey
Immelt pocketed about $48.9 million and increased his salary by 8.2% to $3.8 million. So, one of the
main issues in General Electric would be the corruption that occurs in the higher level executive jobs.
However, the corruption in the executive level jobs does not affect how well the stocks do for General
Electric, and it should not influence anyone s decision to buy General Electric s

Akuthota Muscular Control Model
Low back pain is presumed to occur in 85 90% of the adult population at least onset throughout an
individual s lifespan (Bono, 2004). The core as described by Akuthota et al (2008) is a muscular box
with the abdominals in the front, paraspinals and gluteals in the rear, the diaphragm at the top, and the
pelvic floor and hip girdle musculature at the bottom. Within the box multiple muscles help to
stabilize the spine and pelvis as well as transmit forces through the kinetic chain. Without the stability
provided by the core musculature the spine would become unstable with forces less the 90 N when
loaded anteriorly, which is considerably less than the weight of the torso (Akuthota, Ferreiro, Moore
Fredericson, 2008). The muscles and joints ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Drawing in maneuver muscles entail the use of local deep core muscles that are core stabilizer
muscles, that causes stiffness, such as the transverse abdominis, diaphragm and the multifidus.
The bracing action or co contraction are also referred to as global muscles, which are located toward
the front of the external and internal obliques, quadratus lumborum s lateral fibers, erector spinae s
lateral segments, and rectus abdominus. These muscles help to control the ability of the spine to resist
bending and impact the alignment of the spine by complying and balancing two imposing forces.
These assist in:
Distribution of body weight from obliques(side to side movement)
Large torque producing muscles

Goodlife Fitness

INTRODUCTION
1.1
Company Background
In Canada, the fitness market was growing at approximately 6 percent a year due to some reasons like
demographic changes, marketing programs and preference of individuals. GoodLife Fitness Clubs was
founded by David Patchell Evans in 1979 as a sole proprietorship. Philosophies of the company were
to provide health, fitness and self esteem so that people feel better about themselves. GoodLife has
become Canada s largest health club chains, with 40 clubs in Ontario and Quebec by May 2000 with
over 70,000 members. Head office of GoodLife was located in London, Ontario with the role of
providing leadership and support for the franchisees and company owned clubs. From the beginning,

Top management of GoodLife was not happy with this figure as they are losing 40 percent of its
customers annually. With an increase of 1 percent customer retention rate, the company will earn
$35,000 of gross revenue. There are several problems and intermediate causes that lead to the low
customer retention rate issue and the cause and effect relationship was shown in diagram 1. The major
problems are low customer satisfaction, low brand equity and personal factors. Customer satisfaction
in GoodLife is low mainly due to little or no personal relationship and equipment or facilities
problems. GoodLife received dozens of verbal and written complaints or concerns every week dealt
with equipments and staff problems. In addition, we have identified some intermediate causes that
would lead to no personal relationship problem. For instance, shortage of database marketing and
branding exercise might directly or indirectly induce this problem. Also, branding exercise was seen
as an important factor that contributes to low brand equity as a good brand equity consists of both
brand awareness and brand meaning elements. Overall, we think that no personal relationship was the
central problem that would directly or indirectly lead to the issue of low customer retention rate. We
must focus on this problem if we want to increase customer retention rate in GoodLife.

Social Gender Roles Of Men And Women In Dracula By Bram...
The late nineteenth century was a time where the Victorian culture was a big deal. Thus, it
encompassed all prejudices of society in regards to the social gender roles of men and women.
Dracula by Bram Stoker is set in this time period and is known as a classic horror novel. Throughout
the story, women are thought of as unintelligent while men are greatly looked upon for their authority.
Stoker uses the character Lucy to illustrate the ideal Victorian figure of what a woman should be like,
how she turned evil after being bitten, and then how she transformed after being killed true.
At first, Lucy is described as a beautiful woman who complains to Mina about how she got three
proposals from three different men. Why can t they let a girl marry three different men, or as many as
want her, and save all this trouble? (Stoker 96) . She doesn t want to hurt anyone by not accepting
their proposals. Likewise, this shows that Lucy is a caring person. Nobody would ever expect her to
do any harm to another person. I suppose that we women are such cowards that we think a man will
save us from fears, and we marry them (Stoker 61) . By saying this, Lucy is accepting her role in
society. She is not confident in herself and thinks that she needs a man to protect her in life.
Even though Lucy is a genial character, she starts to evolve into a monster after being bitten by
Dracula. The sweetness was turned to adamantine, heartless cruelty, and the purity to voluptuous
wantoness (Stoker

The Wal-Mart Case
The week one study is about a case that was considered one of the largest lawsuits in United States
History. The United States Supreme Court had to come to a decision on a class act lawsuit between
1,000,000 female Wal Mart employees and their greatly established employer. The discrimination suit
mainly focused on the lack of promotions amongst the plaintiffs and the unequal pay received
compared to their male colleagues. Unfortunately, in this case, despite the statistics generally
exploiting the difference in compensation and advancement amongst the two sexes fell in favor of the
retail giant. The decision was made mainly on plaintiffs lack of ability to demonstrate the
discrimination that each individual encountered while employed with the large retailer. This reflective
paper will look further into the court process, the opinions of a Supreme Court Judge, and the
jurisdiction of the federal court.
During the reading of the Textbook, The Legal Environment of Business, 7th edition , it was
discovered that the U.S. Supreme Court heard this case by it initially being decided by a lower court.
The plaintiff party then displeased with the decision filed a writ of certiorari, which asks for the U.S
Supreme Court to view their records. There are then at least four reasons for the U.S Supreme Court to
decide to select the case: the case has to present ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this case, the women had the facts to prove that they were generally being treated unequal, but was
defeated in a decision that could possibly make it harder for any individual to prosper against a more
financially prepared giant. This case makes the reader realize the contributions that are needed by all
Americans to make this nation a country that truly provides justice for

  • 2. Who Is Responding To The Wii 9 709 448 REV: JANUARY 4, 2010 ANDREI HAGIU HANNA HAŁABURDA Responding to the Wii? Kazuo Hirai, chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI), had just gotten off a conference call with journalists. It was late August 2008, and the reporters were inquiring about Afrika, a new safari videogame for Sony s PlayStation 3 (PS3) console that allowed players to watch wild animals and take virtual pictures. Hirai could not help feeling frustrated. Most of the conversation like many others with Sony outsiders in the past month had revolved around two questions: Was Afrika Sony s answer to the casual games that were partly responsible for the runaway success of rival Nintendo s Wii videogame console? And more generally, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Market Birth, Collapse, and Rebirthb The videogame industry got off to an uncertain start in 1972, when television maker Magnavox introduced Odyssey, the first home videogame console. Priced at $100 (the equivalent of $516 in 2008 dollars),c Odyssey needed a television screen to project its very limited action. The system came with 12 games, including versions of tennis and ping pong, each on a printed circuit board.5 However, partly due to some uninspired marketing and distribution decisions, Odyssey s appeal proved limited. Magnavox sold more than 100,000 game systems by year end, but sales quickly declined and Odyssey was pulled from the market.6 Enter Atari Around the same time, a young entrepreneur named Nolan Bushnell was developing arcade games with the use of then new microprocessor technology.7 In 1972, the company he started, Atari, launched its first hit game an arcade version of ping pong.8 In Pong, two players batted a ball of light back and forth between on screen paddles. The game instructions were simple: Avoid missing ball for high score. 9 Pong was an immediate success: 8,500 arcade consoles were sold in the first year.10 Bushnell ... • 3. How Steinbeck Presents the Relationship Between George and... How Steinbeck presents the relationship between George and Lennie in particular at the beginning and the end The relationship between Lennie and George is very close throughout the book. Of Mice and Men is set in the 1930s depression years in America. This means that their relationship was under a lot of strain. It was unusual in those times to be able to sustain friendships because life was all about living for the moment after America s great depression. They are in a place called the Salinas River near Soledad. John Steinbeck begins the novel Of Mice and Men with a picturesque description of the location where the reader is first introduced to the characters of George Milton and Lennie Small. The opening section of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lennie and George s dream is presented by Steinbeck in order to convey their relationship: George. Tell me. Please, George. Like you done before This dream cannot exist without friendship. This is most demonstrable in the relationship between George and Lennie. Without the other, neither character would be able to maintain the dream. Lennie is constantly asking George to tell about how it s gonna be . The constant repetition of the way things will be is what keeps the dream alive in Lennie. However, George needs Lennie just as much as Lennie needs him, which is apparent at the end of the novel. When George kills Lennie, he also kills the friendship, which results in the death of the dream within himself. Friendship is an underlying factor in the dreams of others as well. From anger and remorse to a close friendship, Steinbeck portrays many different aspects to Lennie and George s relationship. It is the main theme in this novel and stands out as a clear point the author is trying to make. Their dream gives the reader an image of peacefulness between the two, they got each other and living offa the fatta the lan , is their aim. They know that they wouldn t be able to achieve this without each other, Lennie needs George to plan the dream and George needs Lennie to keep it alive. • 4. The Effect Of Plasmid On Bacterial Gene Expression The Effect of Plasmid Addition on Bacterial Gene Expression Introduction In the lab conducted, the main idea stemmed from the topics of genetic engineering and genetic transformation. By definition, genetic engineering is the modification of an organism s genetic composition by artificial means (Lerner). This often involves the micro insertion of genetic material. Genetic transformation is the genetic alteration of cells resulting from the direct intake of genetic material through the cell membrane (Transformation (genetics)). Both differ from other means of genetically altering organisms due to engineering being able to occur between highly differing organisms not of the same species, and transformation occurring at a molecular level ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The purpose of the pGLO lab was to better understand the process of DNA transformation in organisms, and to observe how genes are then expressed after the transformation occurs under specific circumstances. A species of E. coli was used in the experiment as the necessary form of bacteria. The independent variable was the altered plasmids that were placed inside half of the collected bacteria, which contained new genes such as the glow gene (GFP) from Aequorea victoria jellyfish, the switch for the GFP, and/or antibiotic resistance (Ampr). The following dependent variable was then what genes the bacteria expressed after it had either undergone transformation or not, which would be if it glowed or survived exposure to antibiotic. Another independent variable was if the antibiotic Ampicillin or arabinose sugar were present in the petri dish the bacteria were later grown in. The dependent variable was if the bacteria survived the exposure to Ampicillin. There were four groups used in each experiment. The positive control group consisted of bacteria that would be grown in an Luria broth (LB) with no additional plasmids or exposure to Ampicillin or arabinose. The negative control group was one consisting of bacteria grown in a LB and Ampicillin dish with no genetic transformation. The two experimental groups were then one group where bacteria underwent genetic transformation and were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the real world, this mask appears simplistic; however, the internet is an abstract space of node connections that streams a wild flurry of ideas, people, and identities. One s mask does not need a definition to stand firmly in this chaos but merely need to express what is hidden beneath the mask: humanity. That is what it means to have the right to anonymity, the freedom of expression and the right to be protected from outside entities who will stop at nothing to forcefully seize the mask along with physical data. One discourse community dedicated to protecting the rights to anonymity is the Tor Project, a worldwide group that helps create an anonymous browser to hide identity details and participates in establishing it in journalism, academia, activism, and normal users. The exploration of the rights of anonymity will be examined through the discourse community characteristics of Tor by reviewing Porters and Swales works in discourse communities, by using methods of primary investigation through interviewing Tor members, and discussing how Tor fits into Swales six characteristics of a discourse community. At first, they tried several different ways to mount machine guns; they strapped them with leather at one point, which required an additional person needed on the aircraft to fire the gun. Tried mounting them above the pilot, on the upper wing to avoid shooting off the props, which was extremely inaccurate. It was not until the invention of the interrupter gear were they able to successfully able to begin to fire a machine gun without causing self harm to their own aircraft. Debating Whether Nuclear Power Should Be Developed for Future Energy Supplies Introduction I am writing this essay to debate the idea of having nuclear power developed for future use by us. This takes on a major issue and covers many aspects of our nations energy use both in present and for the future. When we think about nuclear power we do not automatically think of it as a non renewable energy source. This is because it is not part of the fossils fuels; coal, oil and gas, which we all know will not last us as reliable energy sources for much longer. However, nuclear power is a non renewable energy source and has many dedicated power stations located around the UK. Nuclear energy is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nuclear fission takes place inside the core by which the isotope splits using the atoms in the uranium dioxide from the pellets. The immense heat produced by this is carried away by fluid circulating through the reactor core. Once the fluid becomes heated it is used to produce steam, this steam drives the turbines which in turn rotate the main electricity generators to produce clean, reliable electricity. During this process there is a massive amount of radiation and so this is why the core is surrounded by a thick concrete shield to absorb this radiation. Arguments FOR using and developing nuclear power To satisfy our general needs of heating our water, heating our homes, cooking our food, powering our appliances and lighting our rooms, we need to retrieve energy from the many many methods available to us. One of these choices is nuclear energy. There are very good reasons why it should be considered and developed further, to be used in the future. Firstly, by comparing it to the other non renewable energy sources (coal, oil and natural gas), nuclear power is a very clean energy as it does not produce any of the greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, which lead to the greenhouse effect or global warming. This problem is significant for the disintegration of the ozone layer when fossil fuels are burnt to release energy. Plus using this form of energy can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Ethical Dilemma And Moral Dilemma GNED 212 Jorawar Singh 30877727 Section 004 Date/Time of Class Wednesday 3:30 PM Part 1 Ethical/Moral Dilemma: Defination Ethical dilemma or moral dilemma is a scenario in which a person has to make choices/decisions depending on the situation or by keeping the net happiness in his mind. He also thinks about the consequences of the decision he will make. In this scenario, I will be describing an ethical dilemma that I faced when I worked with an IT firm. My team leader was stealing from the company. He used to steal the network cable and other networking tools from the company storage unit. I started to dig this matter and I came to know that after stealing, he was selling that tools into local market. It was his side business and he was earning pretty good. But one day, there was a surprise inventory check conducted by our manager. In that report a huge amount of losses were there. So a notice was issued to all employee regarding the inside stealing and we were asked to give the other person name and our name would be not disclosed. At that point of time I faced an ethical dilemma, whether to give the name of my team leader with a fear of losing my job or whether to keep quiet and let him steal more stuff till no one catches him. Part 2 Philosophical model: To solve my ethical dilemma, I will be using Deontology as my philosophical model. Deontology is a Greek word originated from Deon meaning obligation/morality or duty. • 22. Was The Egyptian Revolution Of 1919 A Justifiable Act Of... What was the Egyptian Revolution of 1919 and why was it a justifiable act of civil disobedience? The Egyptian rebellion was a very political and economic defiance of the law. It encouraged many individuals, such as Mahatma Gandhi, to protest against what they believe is harmful and unconstitutional to the country. The Egyptian Revolution of 1919 can be justified as an act of civil disobedience because of Britain s protectorate and martial law for Egypt and Sudan, for causing false belief that the protectorate would be changed after the war, and for seizing the country s infrastructure. The rebellion against the Britain Empire began after the Caucasus Campaign of World War I and Britain declared Egypt the burden of war; it was then that the ... Lord Alfred Milner of Britain was sent to Egypt in December of 1919, he later left March of 1920 and advised that Britain abolish the protectorate and grant Egypt complete independence. He saw the hostile stance of the Egyptian people as uncontrollable and believed Britain would not be able to continue to pursue its interests, given such public opinion. When Britain decided to send the colonial administrator, Egyptians responded to the Milner Mission to get rid of Lord Milner and to confound the judicial system. Thousands of nationalists met at Alexandria s mosque Abu l Abbas al Mursi; ministers, lawyers, counsels, and students proposed strategies against the British rule Egypt. According to the report by Under Secretary of the Foreign Office Cecil Harmsworth to the House of Commons, 800 natives were killed and 1,600 women wounded during the uprising. It states that casualties for European and other civilians were 31 killed and 35 wounded, while 29 British soldiers were killed and 114 wounded. So there were 209 European casualties to 2,400 Egyptian. He states that while bravery and wisdom can be found here and there, that moderation encompasses all. The last line of 432 A is that moderation is found in a community as well as in the individual. Plato starts out his argument, paragraph 431, discussing the humor of self control, how one can be both the weak and the controller. He goes on to discuss how one has mastery of himself or fails himself, depending on how weak the influences of good are. One area of the world that has been absolutely devastated by many earthquakes throughout time is the South American country, Chile. While there have been many very substantial earthquakes in Chile, one stands out most, The Great Chilean Earthquake. On May 22, 1960, The Great Chilean Earthquake hit Chile. This is the largest earthquake ever recorded with a magnitude of 9.5 out of 10.0. It absolutely traumatized the country of Chile and surrounding areas. Just the earthquake itself wasn t the only thing doing damage, the quake caused monstrous tsunamis across the coast of Chile and it even caused tsunamis in Hawaii, Japan, and the Philippines. Large corporations such as Apple or Microsoft continue to outsource more of their production overseas to subcontractors in China. There have been various stories and rumors of Chinese workers being exploited by their wealthy factory owners and supervisors. Working conditions may appear to be improving in China, but most people are not able to view what is happening overseas. There are hazardous conditions as well as death and suicide in sweatshops that produce goods for these large corporations, particularly Apple, Microsoft, Dell, and Nike. These multinational corporations are motivated to obtain large profits by taking advantage of China s lack of effective enforcement of labor laws. China s history of sweatshops and factories has grown because of economic motives and government conditions. Multinational corporations such as Apple or Microsoft are large corporations that sell goods and services throughout the world (O Sullivan 456). To maximize profits, these corporations have to find ways to cut corners and reduce input costs. All of this is done to provide the cheaper prices that American consumers enjoy. • 26. Health Effects Of High Intensity Interval Training On Type... HEALTH EFFECTS OF HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING ON TYPE 2 DIABETES Many people suffer from type 2 diabetes, a type of metabolic disease (Curry et al., 2015; Hawley Gibala, 2012). The prevalence of this disease has been increasing; one reason for this increase could be increased consumption of food as well as decreased prevalence of physical activity (Hawley Gibala, 2012). Patients with type 2 diabetes are not able to metabolise glucose properly (Curry et al., 2015). Type 2 diabetes can cause patients to be very thirsty, excessively weary, and to experience a broad variety of other symptoms (Tovi Engfeldt, 1998). It is often treated with insulin in order to help the body metabolise glucose (Tovi Engfeldt, 1998). However, taking insulin can result in weight gain (Tovi Engfeldt, 1998). Fat of the abdomen can be an indicator of the likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease in an individual with type 2 diabetes, which is heavily correlated with type 2 diabetes (Siren, Eriksson, Vanhanen, 2012). In terms of lifestyle choices, type 2 diabetes patients are often told to focus on diet, but are also encouraged to increase frequency of physical activity (Alvarez et al., 2016; Hawley Gibala, 2012). China and India are evidence of where gender imbalance has occurred. In both countries, there are specific customs and cultural stereotypes that are strictly adhered to. China perceive males to be more valuable than female due to religious beliefs, labour, and financial support; The Chinese have traditionally preferred sons because of their potential to financially support their parents, carry on the family name, and lead ancestor worship (Hsu, 2008). India s ideology of male preference is based on the education of women; women s education is the single most significant factor in reducing son preference (Rohini Pande, 2006). This was really obvious in the activity of multilateral negotiations on negotiating intervention in a civil conflict where I played Iraq. Balancing interests in the negotiation through the Arab countries helped Iraq protect its interests. Without speaking much, but allying very well with Iran and balancing the interests with the Arab states, it turned out that I gained the highest score in my group. • 40. Futility, Spring Offensive And Exposure By Wilfred Owen Eco critics ask questions such as whether or not Everything is connected to everything else , in order to explore the realms of human thought. In relation to Wilfred Owen s poems; Futility, Spring Offensive, and Exposure, this theory that all living things are interconnected is a multifaceted one. Nature is used heavily as a centralised motif in each of them, albeit in different ways, in order to represent a range of both internal and external battles Owen s soldiers are forced to undergo during active service in the war. The soldiers are also depicted to depend on, as well as exploit their rural surroundings in equal measure, particularly concerning military action. As a concept, ecocriticism is a contemporary approach and it is therefore highly unlikely that Owen would have intentionally included such heavily cited links with eco criticism, especially considering that he claimed his subject to be, war and the pity of war . Owen himself believed that the war he was fighting was needless, and only caused pain and suffering. His work sheds light on the harsh, brutality of warfare whilst challenging the patriotic nature of other existing war poems at the time, believing that they did not truly depict the war he was all too familiar with, true Poets must be Truthful . However, applying Owen s work through an ecological perspective is not a completely futile, as Owen s depth of understanding can provide us with insight into the effect humans, particularly soldiers, had on their biosphere during this period in history and vice versa; this is, The fundamental premise that human culture is connected to the physical world, affecting it and affected by it. It is these connections with the natural world that highlight both Owen s love of the natural world, influenced by the likes of Romanticist poet John Keats, and his sense of anguish towards humanity and their distorted concept of war. • 41. Canadian Bilingualism Essay A nation is made up of people with similar beliefs, ethnic backgrounds, values, histories, cultures, and languages. In many ways, a nation should be a foundation of identity, depending on what it is, to the extent that individuals also have their independent characteristics. The linguistic aspect of a nation can impact its citizens. For example, China includes any dialects of Chinese language and Mandarin is one of the most spoken languages. Languages are what bind people together socially and personally. Language is what allows people to have an individual identity. On the other hand, Canada has two dominant languages, English and French and these languages have protection under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Canada s bilingualism is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Culture is closely related to ethnicity, although they are not the same thing. For example, Aboriginals might be united ancestrally, but Inuit culture is different compared to Iroquois culture and Cree culture. Canada is known as a multination state, meaning that Canada does not support any culture over another. When immigrants come to Canada, they are free to express their culture and values in public. This multiculturalism also makes Canada unique. Some factors of nations can directly affect their citizen, like language, while other factors only affect them through exercise. Patriotism is an example shown through love for one s country. For example, people can show patriotism through joining Canada s armed forces or respecting their national anthem. One can even criticize their government s actions or policies, if they are seen wrongly, to show patriotism. Religion is used in nations to unify citizens and create the collective identity. For example, Hinduism is a dominant religion in India, which gives India a sense of identity. However, religion can also divide people, because it might brew conflict. An example being the crisis in Syria, where there is conflict between Muslims and the other minority religions. People also may have spiritual connections to their land, the Aboriginals of Australia they have spiritual connections to their land. • 42. Raising The Bar Analysis So Jon Taffer, the guy who does the show Bar Rescue, wrote an extremely insightful book into what he thinks makes a successful bar and it s titled Raising the Bar I picked it up a couple years ago but I decided to read it again and the very first chapter is titled You Sell One Thing: Reactions So in this chapter, Jon goes on and talkes a lot about how the number one thing that business owners fail to realize is that it s not enough to just have a business that s running, rather you need to have a business that leaves a good and positive impression on people to truly succeed. Here s a paragraph from it that I really enjoy: Think about this: Two people get dressed in the morning. One person throws on whatever clothes are available; the other takes the time to select an outfit and make sure it s clean, pressed, and put together. WHo makes the better impression? The carefully dressed person is thought of as calmer, more powerful, smarter, and more thoughtful than the sloppy one. In an experiment to test perceptions and appearance, teaching assistants who wore formal clothes were perceived as more intelligent than those who dressed more casually. A Harvard study found that women who wore makeup were considered more competent and likable than their barefaced counterparts. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 43. Hepatitis C And C. C When a doctor uses the term Hepatitis C or HCV, what comes to mind? Many people have little to no knowledge of what it is. Is it deadly? Is there a cure? Is it a virus or disease? There are many questions that enter the mind because there are many concerns associated with an unknown illness. Several people wonder if the virus is similar to hepatitis A or B because there has been education throughout the years that provides more awareness surrounding the two known viruses, but it is discovered there are vast differences. Until recently, the general population was unaware that another hepatitis virus acts as a silent killer. Unlike hepatitis A or B, hepatitis C is a relatively new disease that can go unnoticed until it is too late. The virus was initially named non A, non B hepatitis because the virus was identified through numerous blood tests in the 1960s and 1970s ( Hepatitis C History ). The virus was given the name hepatitis C in the 1980s when the Center for Disease Control was able to identify the virus ( Hepatitis C FAQ ). It was identified that the virus enters the human body by entering through blood or bodily fluids and nestles in its permanent home of the liver. This virus is a highly infectious bloodborne pathogen that can cause cirrhosis of the liver and in some cases turn into liver cancer. At this time, there is no cure once the virus has been transmitted. Even though the transmission rate is low, the first step in attacking the virus is to educate people on ... • 44. General Electric Decline General Electric s stock prices had been on a long decline for several years, which began around the 9/11 terrorist attack. General Electric has been called a financial company by several investors and businesses, and the financial segment of their company is what actually caused a decline in General Electric s stock prices. Several bad events and disasters have been occurring since the 9/11 terrorist bombing and life has only gotten worse for the world. Bad events and disasters had hurt General Electric immensely, as General Electric s financial segment, or GE Capital, was heavily reliant on insurance profits. Immelt is trying to hire new young employees that know about technology and can easily learn how to use newer technology. General Electric is still working out issues with GE Capital and Immelt is continuing to remove problem segments from GE Capital. Immelt has declared that ideally only $10 billion of GE s revenue should come from its financial departments, and that most of the revenue will come from General Electric s other important departments, such as GE Aviation, GE Oil Gas, and GE Power. One of the largest initiatives that General Electric is currently taking is what they call Industrial Internet. The Industrial Internet is a term that General Electric uses to [refer] to the integration of complex physical machinery with networked sensors and software. Basically, the Industrial Internet is using electrical sensors and software from the internet and adapting it to machines, an example of a product, made by another company, that would have used the term Industrial Internet is the google smartcar. An important issue within General Electric is that upper level employees are making millions of dollars, while workers don t receive so much. In 2014, Jeffrey Immelt pocketed about $48.9 million and increased his salary by 8.2% to $3.8 million. So, one of the main issues in General Electric would be the corruption that occurs in the higher level executive jobs. However, the corruption in the executive level jobs does not affect how well the stocks do for General Electric, and it should not influence anyone s decision to buy General Electric s ... • 45. Akuthota Muscular Control Model Low back pain is presumed to occur in 85 90% of the adult population at least onset throughout an individual s lifespan (Bono, 2004). The core as described by Akuthota et al (2008) is a muscular box with the abdominals in the front, paraspinals and gluteals in the rear, the diaphragm at the top, and the pelvic floor and hip girdle musculature at the bottom. Within the box multiple muscles help to stabilize the spine and pelvis as well as transmit forces through the kinetic chain. Without the stability provided by the core musculature the spine would become unstable with forces less the 90 N when loaded anteriorly, which is considerably less than the weight of the torso (Akuthota, Ferreiro, Moore Fredericson, 2008). With an increase of 1 percent customer retention rate, the company will earn $35,000 of gross revenue. There are several problems and intermediate causes that lead to the low customer retention rate issue and the cause and effect relationship was shown in diagram 1. The major problems are low customer satisfaction, low brand equity and personal factors. Customer satisfaction in GoodLife is low mainly due to little or no personal relationship and equipment or facilities problems. GoodLife received dozens of verbal and written complaints or concerns every week dealt with equipments and staff problems. In addition, we have identified some intermediate causes that would lead to no personal relationship problem. For instance, shortage of database marketing and branding exercise might directly or indirectly induce this problem. Also, branding exercise was seen as an important factor that contributes to low brand equity as a good brand equity consists of both brand awareness and brand meaning elements. Overall, we think that no personal relationship was the central problem that would directly or indirectly lead to the issue of low customer retention rate. We must focus on this problem if we want to increase customer retention rate in GoodLife. Low customer retention ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Social Gender Roles Of Men And Women In Dracula By Bram... The late nineteenth century was a time where the Victorian culture was a big deal. Thus, it encompassed all prejudices of society in regards to the social gender roles of men and women. Dracula by Bram Stoker is set in this time period and is known as a classic horror novel. Throughout the story, women are thought of as unintelligent while men are greatly looked upon for their authority. Stoker uses the character Lucy to illustrate the ideal Victorian figure of what a woman should be like, how she turned evil after being bitten, and then how she transformed after being killed true. At first, Lucy is described as a beautiful woman who complains to Mina about how she got three proposals from three different men. Why can t they let a girl marry three different men, or as many as want her, and save all this trouble? (Stoker 96) . She doesn t want to hurt anyone by not accepting their proposals. Likewise, this shows that Lucy is a caring person. Nobody would ever expect her to do any harm to another person. I suppose that we women are such cowards that we think a man will save us from fears, and we marry them (Stoker 61) . By saying this, Lucy is accepting her role in society. She is not confident in herself and thinks that she needs a man to protect her in life. Even though Lucy is a genial character, she starts to evolve into a monster after being bitten by Dracula. The sweetness was turned to adamantine, heartless cruelty, and the purity to voluptuous wantoness (Stoker ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. The Wal-Mart Case The week one study is about a case that was considered one of the largest lawsuits in United States History. The United States Supreme Court had to come to a decision on a class act lawsuit between 1,000,000 female Wal Mart employees and their greatly established employer. The discrimination suit mainly focused on the lack of promotions amongst the plaintiffs and the unequal pay received compared to their male colleagues. Unfortunately, in this case, despite the statistics generally exploiting the difference in compensation and advancement amongst the two sexes fell in favor of the retail giant. The decision was made mainly on plaintiffs lack of ability to demonstrate the discrimination that each individual encountered while employed with the large retailer. This reflective paper will look further into the court process, the opinions of a Supreme Court Judge, and the jurisdiction of the federal court. During the reading of the Textbook, The Legal Environment of Business, 7th edition , it was discovered that the U.S. Supreme Court heard this case by it initially being decided by a lower court. The plaintiff party then displeased with the decision filed a writ of certiorari, which asks for the U.S Supreme Court to view their records. There are then at least four reasons for the U.S Supreme Court to decide to select the case: the case has to present ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
