Oppenheimer is an essential character in US history. He is the left-leaning Jew who provided the USA with the Atom Bomb that enabled the US to defeat Japan faster than the planned standard land and air attack by the Soviets and the Chinese Communists, officially endorsed in the Yalta Conference ( 4–11 February 1945) by Churchill, Truman, and Stalin. Truman did not have the atomic bomb yet and will only have it in July 1945. So, he bluffed and agreed with the Soviet plan because he had no alternative … yet. He reneged his agreement in July-August 1945, and he dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945. The victory over Germany was a joint effort. The victory over Japan was a self-centered and egotistic solitary procedure not even negotiated with the allies of the US. The United Kingdom might have been informed, maybe. But the USSR was not. The Americans were already and had been for nearly two centuries, on the “America First” and “Make America Great Forever” lines that we have known all along and directly since 1918.
And within 9 years Oppenheimer will be ostracized because he was leaning to the left and there were Communists around him. He submitted and disappeared in some sideline university job. He had nowhere to go, as opposed to Charlie Chaplin who went back to England. As a Jew, he could have gone to Israel, but that was not a real optimistic solution at the time. He might even have gone to the USSR with his communist wife. But he stayed put in the USA, in his closet-university-job. The film does not really explore this dilemma: hide away in the USA, go to the Jewish Israel, or go to the USSR. On one hand, it was his old depressive nature that came back. On the other hand, it would have been going back to his faith and his roots, even if it could have looked like treason. On the third hand, on yet another other hand, it would have been plain treason.
OPPENHEIMER, WHEN THE US STARTED TO LOSE THEIR ETHICS
1.
2. CHRISTOPHER NOLAN –
OPPENHEIMER – 2023
The film is admirable, like a work of art in the Louvre or the Tate Galleries because of the
technical achievement in this film. The Imax format of 65-mm film gives a tremendous quality to the
image that multiplies the possibilities to have detail and special effects like the use of black and
white sequences, the shooting of which had to be invented for the Imax format. In the same way,
this high-resolution picture requires special treatment of lights and movements, facial expressions
and close-up pictures. The digital special effects are also beautiful since they can be so finely
detailed that they become far more than impressive. The sequence of the firing of the test A-bomb
is very representative of this format and its inventiveness.
The film is also extremely well done with very good actors. It is not an action or war film, so no
battles, no fights, no innumerable body doubles, and no stunt performers. The actors have to do
the work by themselves. True enough it is not too dangerous. But body language, facial language,
various expressions centered on the eyes, the face, and the feelings that can be expressed by the
lips, mouth, cheeks, chin, or simply the positioning of the head. Cillian Murphy is very good at that
kind of acting, and he is helped in this stiff stance, often unemotional, by the use of some stressed-
looking behavior more than any violence or brisk or brusque movements of the arms, hands, or
body in general. A very old debate about which one is funnier, Buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin?
Cillian Murphy is more on the Buster Keaton side. Christopher Nolan can say what he wants, but
this film is a biopic and a bio-doc as much at least as a plain movie. It has to respect what we know
about the main character and his social, cultural, ideological, and political behaviors. Strangely
enough, no real Jewish presence or dimension is specified concerning Oppenheimer himself, so
Judaism becomes part of the environment. But I believe his being a Jew explains his left-leaning
years or positions, his engagement in the fight for an A-bomb, and later on his refusal of the H-
bomb, his general position against war. His famous sentence that the A-bomb might be the end of
all wars is also dictated by a certain reading of the Thora.
That’s where the special features are essential since they contain one bio-doc. We can wonder
if Oppenheimer wore light blue shirts in real life, or only in the film, but that is a detail. The hat on
the other side is so famous that it had to be the proper one. I am not sure on the other hand that
the nude scene with his love affair is not the best invention imaginable. Sex and desire do not
require nudity, especially to sit on a couch and in an armchair. No contact please; we are prudes.
3. There used to be a successful play in a theater in London in the 1960s entitled “No sex please,
we’re British.” That’s what this static nudity scene makes me think of but without the British bluntly
naked humor of the original.
The film itself makes Truman so inhumane, inhuman, anti-empathetic, cold, distant, and a
blind and deaf political puppet of the American system, what Eisenhower was to call the military-
industrial complex. It is this cold calculation that will lead not to a victorious USA after the war, but
to an imperialistic USA that will invade Korea (the USA, not the Korean Communists started the
war there because the Korean Communists were at home and not invading another country); that
will then invade South Vietnam and have a fifteen-year long war there crushing North Vietnam
under thousands of bombs and the North Vietnamese bringing the planes down with Soviet
equipment arriving to Haiphong by sea because Mao Zedong refused to let that equipment use
China’s railroads. The first invasion was a defeat since North Korea still exists as the result of this
defeat: let’s cut the country in two because we cannot control it all. The second invasion was
another defeat, and this time with their tail well crushed between their legs. But this imperialism will
come back with Reagan (Grenada, Meso-America, the Contras to finance the opposition to the
Islamic revolution in Iran, and many other wars like Bush Sr’s war in Kuwait, and of course the
absurd invasion of Iraq, and the intervention in Syria that brought, both together, the emergence of
the Islamic State, and before it, Al-Qaeda. Those invasions led to nothing beneficial for the USA
and the USA has been forced to step out mostly, stopped as they were by Turkey, Syria, with the
help of Russia, and the Shiah majority of Iraq. We will not be ironical about Afghanistan.
And of course, we have to think of Ukraine and Gaza. Both problems should have been solved
diplomatically but they were not because of the narrow-minded support of the USA, and the EU
eventually, to the anti-Russian Ukrainians (not all Ukrainian-speaking Ukrainians, mind you, since
even conscription, the draft cannot refill the depleted armed forces, revealing the lack of
enthusiasm among simple people) against the Russian-speaking Ukrainians supported by Russia,
and more recently the same support to Israel against Hamas, and the use of the veto-right in the
Security Council of the United Nations by the USA to block any resolution on a permanent cease-
fire, hence encouraging and giving free rein to the Israeli government to continue their genocidal
war against Hamas, a war that is turning into a plain Israeli-made famine. All that is the result of
4. what is explained in this film, but not made explicit. The film keeps at the level of Oppenheimer in
his time: he built the A-bomb to defeat Hitler who was persecuting the Jews. It was used in Japan
to defeat Japan because in the meantime, before even the test in July 1945, Germany had been
defeated on May 8. It did not have to be used TWICE on TWO Japanese cities. ONCE on an
empty island close enough to be seen, from Japan, from Tokyo, or whatever, and a strong
diplomatic push would have brought Japan down. But the film and the bio-doc do not really say
that the Soviets, after the victory over Germany, were moving troops to the east and were
negotiating their cooperation with Mao Zedong and his forces to move against the Japanese. The
A-bomb was used before it could happen. The objective was to block the Communists in Asia.
They obviously did not exactly block anything. Once again Truman was wrong. True enough, the
following presidents were not that swift either, with the partial exception of Kennedy who avoided
the crisis in Cuba and found a solution in a compromise.
The film and the actors deserve their Oscarized success but politically, the special feature
entitled Meet the Press did not really reach any depth in what happened afterward, locking
Oppenheimer in his victimization as a non-communist travelling in the same carriage as a whole
set of communists. The McCarthy period is better covered in the film than in the special features,
and even so, the fundamentalism of McCarthy is not exposed. Charlie Chaplin went back to the
United Kingdom, and Oppenheimer found some refuge in some university position that had nothing
to do, or very little, with nuclear weapons and even nuclear science. You can – eventually, you may
if you want to remain prudent – consider the imperialistic engagement of the USA in the world, with
or without the support of the EU, NATO, and no support from the UN. It locks the discourse in the
film and around the film in the straitjacket of plain facts up to just after the bomb, the straitjacket of
Oppenheimer’s experience seen by modern minds. It prevents the opening of the main question:
what is the future of this imperialistic policy? Let’s hope – you need a lot of faith here – the next US
president will put some water in his milk, red wine, or Bourbon. But since whisky is the American
substitute for tea, at least in TV series and Hollywood films, I doubt they will water it down.
The final question is: Who (plural of course) will stop it and bring these Methuselah politicians
back to reason?
