The Irony Of Optimism In Voltaire s Candide
When Cunégonde is first introduced in the story of Candide By Voltaire the only thing mentioned is
her looks. She is described as a seventeen year old ruddy cheeked girl, fresh, plump, and desirable (p.
186). Right off the bat she is presented as a sexually desirable character. This perception of her is what
Voltaire eventually uses to nullify philosophical optimism.
Cunégonde s first involvement in the plot involved a sexual act. She was walking near the castle when
she saw Dr. Pangloss in the underbrush; he was giving a lesson in experimental physics to her mother
s maid (p.186). In seeing these two have sex, she then had a sexual fantasy of her own about Candide.
This fantasy is what then led up to her physical interaction with Candide that resulted in him getting
kicked out of the castle. Twice she has been mentioned in the first two pages of the story and the only

The world that is, is the best of all possible worlds. The author writes this book to point out the
foolishness and the irony of this philosophical thought. Cunégonde s reputation goes along with that.
In the real world, men value chastity in women and a woman s virginity is something that she holds
dear. When that is stripped away from her without her consent, it is not at all met with the attitude that
the characters in Candide have met it with. Characters like Candide himself or evens some of the
women in the story like the old woman seem to be very nonchalant about women being sold as
prostitutes or being raped. Voltaire uses this as a way to point out to readers the foolishness of this
philosophical idea. If in fact, this were the best of all possible worlds, a woman s virtue means nothing
and people should not care about it. This is where readers can see that Cunégonde is merely a tool
Voltaire uses to invalidate this idea, which shows that her role as a minor character is an significant

Genetically Modified Organisms And Stem-Food Report
With reference to a recent news report analyse how genetically modified products are created and
evaluate the use of stem cells to combat disease.
Genetic modification is the manipulation of DNA in an organism. It involves extracting a gene from
one organism then inserting it into another organism that is usually of a different species but can be
the same. The genes can also be manufactured instead of being extracted from the organism. Genetic
modification can be done to plants, animals and even food. Genetically modified products can benefit
humans in many ways such as genetically modified plants can be used to reduce vitamin deficiency
(CGP A2 Level Biology Revision Guide, 2009).
In 2005, UK scientists developed a new strain of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lastly, the agrobacterium tumefaciens insert the genes into the plant cells DNA which then creates
transformed rice plant cells. Now the rice plant cells grow on a selective medium. Only the
transformed rice plants will be able to grow due to them containing the marker gene which is needed
to grow on this medium (CGP A2 Level Biology Revision Guide, 2009).
Although golden rice is great in the way it helps with a vitamin A deficiency and in reducing colour
blindness, there are disadvantages, such as there are concerns that food from genetically modified
plants might harm people and fears that it could cross breed with and contaminate wild rice (BBC
Bitesize, 2017).
Evaluation of stem cells and other methods of genetic modification.
Stem cells are unspecialized cells which can develop into any cell. Stem cells then divide to become
specialized through a process called differentiation. Stem cells in humans are found in early embryos
and in a few places in adults (CGP AS Level Biology Revision Guide, 2008). Stem cells are found in
every human body in limited amounts and can be taken from adult tissues without harm (Thought Co,
2017).
The two main types of stem cells are embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. Most embryonic stem
cells are from IVF clinics that have been donated for research purposes with informed consent from
the donors. They do not come from fertilized eggs in a woman s body.

Summary Of Tom Wright s PlayBlack Diggers
Tom Wright demonstrated through his play Black Diggers the harsh reality of the treatment of
indigenous Australian during the time of World War 1. Black Diggers captured the exclusion, the
violence and loss of opportunities faced by the Indigenous Australians. Australia 100 years on still
shows similar hostilities towards Aboriginal individuals, some movement has been may towards
Aboriginals being equal but still not much meaningful change has occurred.
Wright demonstrates the limit opportunity that the Indigenous people had for their inherited land. The
land that they owned was taken over by the white Europeans and called Australia a name never heard
of in the Aboriginal community. Wright demonstrated that the land was taken over, and they had no
choice in the decision they had to live with the choice. Furthermore Wright empathised their
unpresented land right when presenting the Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act of 1917 , the public
servant had the authority to acquire land of the Indigenous without giving them a choice you can t just
take the land off us , however the reality is that they could. Wright also demonstrated that Indigenous
servicemen couldn t apply for land in the same way white servicemen could. The viewers of the play
are presented with the harsh reality of what the white individuals could take from the Aboriginals
without them be able to defend themselves eliciting a sense of sadness and reject of the treatment
towards them. On the other

The Great Gatsby Dishonesty Quotes Analysis
The Great Gatsby; F. Scott Fitzgerald
Without rules and regulations the wealthy can live very extravagant lushes lives but there are
consequences for dishonesty. In F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby dishonesty supplies a method
of creating escape from consequence for the wealthy. The wealthy feels as if they are better than the
other classes and can lie. Without consequences, Fitzgerald shows this by using diction to show how
dishonest behavior, manmade privileges, and social mannerisms cause the wealthy to live recklessly
without consequences. Throughout this book gatsby s choice lead him to his ultimate downfall.
Gatsby s life has been told many ways and he has not been honest to many people about it, leading to
the end of the book where there are a series of events that inevitably kill Jay Gatsby. Was Daisy
driving? Yes, he said after a moment, but of course I ll say I was ... (Fitzgerald 15). The paradoxical
idea of who was driving the car and the lie Gatsby will tell, enforces the idea of dishonest behavior.
The contradiction between true events and what will be told to the public, except for Nick, connects
the belief that they can get away with the killing of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Road Less Taken
All of Summer in a Day is a tale from the far off future, when humanity has colonized Venus. Once
every seven years for only about two hours, taking place in a class room of young children, most of
which don t remember the sun or the gentle yellow glow it gives off due to living in underground
bunkers their whole lives. One child, Margo, recently moved to Venus from Earth, remembers the Sun
and tries to explain it to her fellow class mates who believe she is lying. On the day the Sun is to come
out, the children finally get tired of hearing Margo s Lies and lock her in a closet to punish her while
the Teacher is out. Later the Teacher arrives back in the room and, not realizing Margo is not with
them, takes them outside for the Summer . When the children come back in due to the heavy rain
coming back, they realize what they have done to Margo and let her back out of the closet. All of

themes; however, there is one part that ties these to tales together, Margo. Throughout her time on

A Brief History of Iraq
Iraq borders Turkey to the North and Iran to the East. Iraq was colonized by Great Britain in
particular, British efforts to colonize and govern Iraq were miscalculated and self serving, resulting in
the creation of an unbalanced and violent nation, divided along ethic and separation lines of many
different ethnic backgrounds. The failures of the Cairo Conference along with the lack of
understanding between Britain s understanding of the Arab nationalist movement and the appointment
of Faisal as King, have led to conflict and violence as unity has been disabled within the country.
Conflict in Iraq can be contributed to early colonization/westernization and Al Qaeda.
Early colonization within Iraq and the British rule over Iraq created a lot of turmoil and uncertainty
within the country. During the infamous World War 1 the British attacked the Ottoman Empire in Iraq,
Britain came in with a bang and wanted to put its own influence on the country immediately. The
British army sought out local sheikhs to implement power over the population. The British had hoped
to empower the Sheikhs by giving them the authority to arrest criminals and collect taxes based on
their own set of beliefs, and in return the British decided to give the Sheikhs subsidies and weapons
and would even sometimes lend them soldiers. Nationalist aspects of understanding were put into
force by Iraq at the time, but British rule quickly eliminated any talk of nationalism within Iraq. With

How Did Nikola Tesla Contribute To The World
In 1884, Serbian migrant Nikola Tesla landed in America. Tesla was full of thoughts and ideas that
would eventually help the U.S.A as well as the rest of world. Nikola Tesla was the inventor of the
Alternating Current (AC) light and different power systems that are currently used all over the world.
Three of Nikola Tesla s most well known and most useful inventions are:
1. Rotating magnetic field.
2. Wireless or radio broadcasts.
3. Wireless transmission of electricity to any point on the earth.
Before his arrival in the U.S., Nikola worked for a year at the French branch of the Edison Electric
Light Co. At that time, the most famous inventor in the world was named Thomas Alva Edison.

Tesla worked for many months and solved the problems Edison was having with his devices.
Unfortunately, Edison did not pay Tesla and for a few thousand dollars they lost the ability to acquire
control of the greatest and one of the most profitable invention ever, (O Neill, p. 58).
Inventor and Westinghouse Company owner, George Westinghouse, brought Tesla s system to the
world. This started what became known in U.S. history as the War of the Currents, or the battles
between AC and DC. Westinghouse s choice to adopt Tesla s AC system changed the world forever.
Westinghouse offered to buy all the AC patents from Tesla for the staggering sum of 1 million dollars
cash and royalties of $1.00 per horsepower of electricity produced. This determination to give the
world AC, put Tesla and Westinghouse on a collision course with J.P. Morgan and Edison. By 1897,
the War of the Currents between AC and DC or between Westinghouse and Edison continued
unabated. In 1895, Tesla s laboratory in New York City was totally destroyed by

The Black Cat And Tell Tale Heart
H.P. Lovecraft wrote a book called Supernatural Horror in Literature. In the book he wrote a literary
analysis about Poe s writing he says, Like most fantasists, Poe excels in incidents and broad narrative.
I agree with what Lovecraft has to say about Poe s protagonist. In each of his stories like The Black
Cat and Tell Tale Heart both of these stories have such an amazing horror into them but when you start
reading more about the main characters you realize that all his main characters always do make the
same decisions including The Raven . Starting off With Tell Tale Heart, in the beginning, the narrator
of the story is shown as a caring person who allowed the old man to leave with him and help the old
men with what he needed. But later on in the story, he starts getting very paranoid he says, But why
WILL you say that I am mad? The disease had sharpened my senses, not destroyed, not dulled them
(Tell tale heart). The disease that he is talking about was nervousness his nervousness makes him start
to become paranoid of the old guys eye. He called his eye the Vulture eye and described it as a, A pale
blue eye with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me my blood ran cold. Which led to the narrator
going mad and plan the old man s death. This led to Poe s character turning mad which led to him
planning to make old man s life away. He says that for one week he would go into the old man s room
at midnight and look at him for a couple minutes then later on in the

Locavore Movement Research Paper
Nutritious. Healthier. Reduction of Carbon emission. All of these are positive aspects of local food
right? Concealed under these factors lie environmental destruction as well as a damaged economy.
The Locavore Movement has been on the rise due to its nutritional benefits, however, this
overshadows the effects of locally grown food on our environment and economy.
Many locavores say that locally grown produce contains more nutrients since they ve been recently
picked, unlike supermarkets where the produce has been left in the freezers for weeks. In addition,
they also claim that since it takes less distance to travel from farm to plate there is a decreased chance
of contamination (Source A). It s accurate to say that most produce grown from local areas are
healthier which is why the government plans to place more investments into farmers markets(Source

1535 AN EMPIRICAL EXAMINATION OF THE EXPORT LED GROWTH HYPOTHESIS IN
TURKEY1 Sami TABAN*, Ä°smail AKTAR** ABSTRACT The export led growth [ELG] hypothesis
postulates a causal connection between export and growth. This study investigates ELG hypothesis
using quarterly time series data for the period 1980:1 2007:2 in Turkey. The hypothesis is tested by
applying the cointegration and error correction procedures. We find an evidence to support the
hypothesis that there is a long run and short run bidirectional causality relationship between export
growth and real GDP growth in Turkey. Key Words: Export Led Growth Hypothesis, coingration,

throughout the world. With these foreign exchanges, it could import better quality inputs and more

remainder of the paper is organized as following. Section 2 briefly explains what export led growth
hypothesis is about. Section 3 deals with the empirical studies. Section 4 Taban, Aktar, 2008 1537
gives the details the methodological issues and about data set. Section 5 gives the concluding marks.
2. EXPORT LED GROWTH [ELG] HYPOTHESIS Ricardo s theory of comparative advantage
explains that countries should specialize in the production of commodities that they are most efficient
at producing in relation to other countries, and trade those commodities with the rest of the world. It is
possible to say that a country can export its commodities and consequently raise foreign currency,
with which it can import the other commodities in need. The better a country is at producing its
specialized commodities, the more revenue it will raise from its exports and the more it will be able to
procure imports. This trade theory has given birth to a new direction for economic policy, namely the
export led growth [ELG] hypothesis (Zuniga, 2000). The ELG hypothesis postulates that export
expansion is a key

You robbed me of something very precious and I will never forgive you for that. Mr. McKinney, I give

Indigenous People In The Spanish
The Spanish focused on concentrating indigenous populations in villages or missions, where they
could be Christianized and forced to work for the Crown. Within these Spanish ruled villages the
ethnic differences between indigenous peoples were dissolved and gave way to a new one with the
acquisition of the Quechua language . As a result, a new identity as Quechua speaking people emerged
in the region and the pre hispanic identities vanished (Scazzocchio a1979). It is very likely that their
pre Hispanic identities disappeared around the 17th and 18th centuries. Moreover, the Spanish rule
and the mission system imposed a social structure and classification which were to last, with some
modifications, until the first half of the 20th century.

African Vs Inca Essay
During the Dark Ages in Europe, other civilizations throughout the world were going through a

of engineering. The Incas were amazing engineers who build bridges and roads through the most
rocky parts of the Andes Mountains. My first source is an online article titled Achievements of the
Incas from the website Discover Peru. The quote from the article says, They built a system of roads

To start off, my second source is an article titled Great Achievements in Science and Technology in
Africa from the website ASBMB Today. The quote from the article says, ...there are the engineering
feats of the Egyptians: the bafflingly raised obelisks and the more than 80 pyramids...Many advances
in metallurgy and tool making were made across the entirety of ancient Africa. These include steam
engines, metal chisels and saws, copper and iron tools and weapons, nails, glue, carbon steel and
bronze weapons and art . This shows us that the Africans made advancements in engineering because
they made tools. Many people used what was around them but the Africans built more effective
things. Also according to the article, Great Achievements in Science and Technology in Africa, the
Egyptians constructed pyramids out of blocks of stone. This is a major advancement because people
had to carve each piece of stone by hand with no technology. The Africans also made advancements in
buildings. They used stone and granite to build new universities, grand places, and homes. The idea
from these two sources is similar. They are both telling the reader that people who lived long ago
made several advancements in engineering. These two articles clearly send the reader the message that

Loss Of Innocence In The Outsiders
The Outsiders by S.E Hinton was written in the 1960 s, a time of rebels and outlaws. The novel
follows the story of two rival gangs, the Socs and the Greasers. The Socs are rich and powerful but
feel no emotion; they are cool to the point of not feeling anymore while the Greasers are in poverty
and are often shunned by society, but they have a passion for life, the exact opposite of the Socs. The
story also discusses the loss of innocence in the main character, Ponyboy Curtis, a young teen in the

Once all birds have been counted I will play the sound and note the actions of the birds (freeze or flee)
along with noting the number of birds that have left and the number that stayed at the feeder. I will
then measure the number of birds feeding over a 10 minute period (how many birds are feeding at 1
min mark, 2 min mark, 3 min mark...etc.). At the end of the 10 minute period, I will replay the sound
and repeat the process 5 more times. In addition to tallying the number of birds present I will measure
how long it took for the first bird to come back to the feeder.
I will do each condition for a total of 3 5 times (occurring once every other day), over a one hour per
day. Each trial will be 10 minutes long, with the next occurring immediately at the end of the previous
one. A total of 6 trials will be conducted per day. I will leave at least one week in between conditions
(bell vs predator call) to account for any habituation.
I will compare all trails with one another to see if there are any differences. I will also compare the
responses of birds in a natural woodland setting to that of birds in a more urban setting. Then I will
use both conditions to see if the birds were responding to just the presentation of a loud sound, or were
responding to the threating call, giving me the ability to determine if the birds can make a

Hardy Boys The Tower Treasure Summary
I have read the Hardy Boys The Tower Treasure by Franklin W. Dixon. The Hardy Boys were
delivering paper for their dad on their motorcycles. a blue car went flying by and then it went flying
by again. They climbed the hill next to them and delivered the papers. They were going to Chets house
to say hi, and they saw the blue car had crashed into a ditch there was no one in the car. They went
down Chets driveway and saw that Chet was sad; the man had stolen Chets yellow car. Chet and the
Hardy Boys went around town asking if anyone say a yellow car go bye. Their friend Callie who had a
cake in her hand said Chets yellow car was going so fast that it scared her and she dropped the cake.
The Hardy Boys went to the police station to see if the Chief knew anything. Once they got there, they
saw that their rival detective, Detective Smuff was there with a man that worked at a ticket both. They
were reporting a man in Chets yellow car had attempted to rob the ticket booth. The next day the boys
were on the case and they had called in a couple of their friends to help. They all split up to look for
clues and at the end they would meet at the park. At the park they ate and took a nap once they woke
up they looked in the last place it could have been in, in. they looked in the woods near the park where
there was an old dump they split up and looked. They found footsteps in the mud that led to small path
in the woods and they walked along the path. Chets car was at the end of the path. All of them piled in
the car and drove along the highway calling out that they have found the car. They saw Smuff and
Bragged but he didn t care there was a new case the tower has been robbed. The Hardy boys were on
the hunt for clues. They went to the tower with their dad where Mr. Applegate accused Mr. Robinson
of the robbery because he was the only one who has ever seen the safe open. That was the Hardy boys
friends dad. They wanted to solve the mystery so Mr. Robinson could get a job and they could go to
school with their friend. They suspected that the man who stole Chets car was the one who did it but
they had no evidence. They gave their dad the wig, and he looked inside and saw a tag with a name on
it. They went to New York to find

Comparing All My Sons And A Streetcar Named Desire
Both Arthur Miller s All My Sons and Tennessee Williams s A Streetcar named Desire exhibit
numerous indirect social purposes that can relate to the societal issues today. Miller is able to inform
the audience about the classic corruption of the American Dream as well as his idea of social
accountability in a similar approach to how Williams discusses the issues of mental health and spousal
violence. Each are able to achieve their indirect social purposes to educate the audience about these
problems with similar devices but with different ones as well.
Williams employs the use of outer dialogue in order to achieve his social purpose on mental health.

As Chris reads the letter from his brother, Larry, in the falling action in Act 3, it becomes apparent that
Joe Keller s actions have significantly affected his family. Larry cannot bear to live any more and
cannot seem to face anybody because of the choices his father has made. This invokes a heartbroken
mood for the ending of the play because the audience can feel how drastically Keller s choices have
impacted his son, as he commits suicide. Unlike Williams s use of motifs, Miller s change in mood
causes the audience to realize that there is a connection between the individual and society as they can
feel the pain that Larry has experienced because of Keller.
Overall, both Williams s A Streetcar Named Desire and Miller s All My Sons inform their audiences
about various social issues with similar and different devices in order to achieve their purpose. Both
plays utilize outer dialogue in order to present the issues with the American Dream in Miller s work
and mental health with Williams. However, they also use different devices such as motifs or mood to

The NFL Protest Argument
During the pre season of the 2016 National Football League season, San Francisco 49ers quarterback
Colin Kaepernick sat for the National Anthem to protest racial injustice within the United States.
When asked why he sat, he stated, I ve been very clear from the beginning that I m against the
systematic oppression of black Americans (Willingham). The quarterback received some negative
reaction to his method of protest and, after three games, met with former NFL player and Army
veteran Nate Boyer to discuss his protest. During this meeting, Kaepernick agreed with Boyer and
decided kneeling during the anthem was a more respectful form of protest (Willingham). Since that
time, many NFL players joined Kaepernick in his protest and continue to kneel during the playing of
the anthem. Through this silent, non violent protest, many uncomfortable questions are now at the
forefront of American cultural discussion. To date, Kaepernick alone has paid a price for the protest
actions as currently he is not playing in the NFL since no team would dare sign such a controversial
player. In addition, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, recently jumped into the debate
during a speech calling any player who kneels a son of a bitch and stating they should lose their jobs
(Jenkins). The President also inferred the protests are disrespectful to the American flag and to the
members of the United States military. This background on the NFL protests raises several questions

Fun Home Identity
Fun Home and Sex Criminals both explore sexuality and identity in different ways throughout the
books. With Sex Criminals, the use of colour to represent different means and the passing of time in
the book was very key to the story. In both books there was a struggle with their sexual identity where
the main characters are trying to figure out who they really are. Both books do this differently. In fun
Home it is a struggle for a father and daughter, while in Sex Criminals it is two individuals that share
the same power but have to figure it out by themselves in the beginning. In Sex Criminals, the main
character was a lone and no one would help her on her journey to discovering what was happing with
her body and who she really was. The author of this books shows us this through the use of colour.
The colour of her clothing would represent different things, when she was confident about who she
was it was blue, and the colour red was for when she was confused and lost. The author also like to

The Impact Of Mongol Conquests
As the Mongols expanded their nation through conquest, they were able to revive trade while
cultivating the blend of new ideas and cultural traditions. Despite the positive attributes that the
Mongols brought, the Mongol conquests also caused a great deal of destruction to the societies of Afro
Eurasia during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The barbaric violence used by the Mongols
during these times contradicts the peace and prosperity they supposedly yearned for. The brutality of
the Mongolian military resulted in a large drop of Afro Eurasian population. Mongol invasions were
extremely cruel to the extent where some cities were annihilated and entire populations extinguished.
An anonymous author of The Secret History of the Mongols writes about the merciless Chinggis Khan
and his gruesome warfare tactics he used on the Tangut peoples. The Mongolian ruler ordered Tangut
cities to be destroyed and to have the women, children, and grandchildren all executed. (Doc. 1). This
document provides insight to the extent of the impact of Mongol destruction, where cities like Tangut
were completely destroyed. One would expect the author to glorify the Mongols by discussing the
humane aspect of Mongol conquest, because this account was written for the Mongol royal family.
However, an account like this might have been seen as satisfactory for the royal family, since the
Mongols celebrated and encouraged horrendous atrocities. Russian monks from the city of Novgorod

Development Of Identity And Journey
Identity Many people believe that a journey leads to a development of identity, of who we are as a
person. Along the same lines, our values and characteristics evolve over time, as we make changes
throughout our lives. Therefore, the liaison that identity and journey, share is a journey of obstacles
and internal and external trials. Thus, helping us grow by maturing and helps develop valuable life
skills as a result, learning new experiences. This journey will help us see what makes us different from
one another and whom we want to identify. Throughout this journey, we will develop qualities and go

point on shaping our identity. For example, this will help us identify if we are a strong or weak

external, and transformative journey to shape our identity to self define, who and what we are. In other
words, how this journey sets us apart from other people. First, to identify who we are as a person we
must go through an internal journey on why it shapes our identity to self define who we are. For
example, an internal journey will give us a sense of unique individuality. Thus, how we evolve during
this journey, like how we change on the inside. For instance, our emotional path will

Abstract
Social media is an inherent part of current Internet and used by more than a billion individuals

is harmful to almost any part of health, from reproductive and respiratory function to brains. It raises
the risks of several debilitating, and lethal diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, and some
cancers. From these points, it is not laborious to recognize that social media is decreasing net citizens
health levels indirectly. Social media also leads to mental problems, especially to teenagers. Teenagers
who engage with social media during the night could be damaging their sleep and increasing their risk

Illinois Court Structure
They say justice is blind. Laws are made only to protect the interest of the wealthy. Anyone can
become a judge, one does not necessarily have to attend school to do so. These are just a few myths
about our judicial system, some of which that hold some truth, and others that are inaccurate. In this
paper, I will provide history about the type of court structure in Illinois, the process in which judges
and lawyers are selected within the state, and how judges and lawyers are disciplined. To begin,
Illinois was admitted to statehood in 1818. In its original Constitution, the following was outlined:
Every person ought to find a certain remedy in the laws for all injuries and wrongs which he may

In order to become a lawyer in Illinois, as I aspire to be, one must first attend an undergraduate
institute to obtain a degree. Next, for formal legal study, one must enter law school to obtain a
secondary degree called the Juris Doctor. However, before completing this, one must take the Law
School Admission Test (LSAT) as an entry exam to law school. The LSAT is offered four times
throughout the year, and consists of three sections which are: logical reasoning, analytical reasoning,
reading comprehension, and a writing sample. Hence, this test predicates how one will perform in law
school and often influences the school in which students are accepted. However, upon graduation, one
must pass the state bar exam. Even for this examination, there are a few requirements under Rule 704
in the Supreme Court Rules: the person must be of twenty one years of age, be of good moral
character to practice law, has satisfactorily completed exams on academic qualifications an

Contemporary Academic Deliberations Of Love s Alchemy By...
Contemporary academic deliberations of Love s Alchemy by John Donne and On My First Son by
Ben Jonson has given rise to one controversial issue: whether love should be labeled as uncertainty. In
fact, some argue that the poem Love s Alchemy expresses the cynical love, whereas, the poem On My
First Son focuses more on pious love. These contrasting views have also been articulately conveyed
through words, such as, Alchemy and Farewell in the individual poetic works of both Donne and
Jonson, respectively, with one conclusion: to alter men by first enticing them to a fantasy world,
wherein they are rendered unstable, and later, compelling them to correct themselves. Furthermore,
though both of these aforementioned poems are about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, Donne is in a constant quest to find a deeper meaning of love, though he is only met with
disappointments at the end. To elaborate on this point, though Donne concedes that he had once found
love when he mentions, I have loved, and got, and told (line 3), he (Donne) still carries the disjointed
feelings that he got from this love.
Furthermore, Donne utters, Tis not the bodies marry, but the minds, (line 19). Here Donne s profound
connection and obsession with death, and that he is constantly aware of it. The words, shadow ,
angelic short scorn are related to the underworld that one may not easily embrace; thus, causing
displeasure. Many who might object to the notion that a woman plays a special role in a man s life and
she has the ability to make her man happy, Donne attacks this very notion as well: Our ease, our thrift,
our honor, and our day, Shall we for this vain bubble s shadow pay? (line13 14). By these verses,
Donne implies that though men have to work harder to serve their women, in return, however, men do
not receive the same amount of true love that they deserve; their love remains unrequited. As a

a good leader? Edmund Burke said All persons possessing any power ought to be strongly and awfully

to the one great Master, Author, and Founder of society. Edmund stated here that he believes a leader
of any sort should trust in God, and give Him the glory for their accomplishments, for He is sovereign
over society. However, in a country like this where the opinions of the people really do matter

They must be committed to following God s Word in their life. For example, how a person leads their
own family is a tell of their ability to lead wisely. 1 Timothy 3:5 says, If a man does not know how to

consideration in this verse is a church leader, this verse can be applied to any sort of leader. If a person
lives their own life and leads what they are already in control of according to the standards set in God
s Word, this commitment will likely continue in office. They will try to establish rules based upon God

Moses was told by God to choose men to be judges over the children of Israel; these men were to be

Moral And Ethical Controversies Of Assisted Suicide
Moral and Ethical Controversies of Assisted Suicide The practices of euthanasia and assisted suicide
are something that takes place in hospitals around the world both legally and illegally. It is the act of
intentionally causing a patients death or allowing a patient to take their own life by prescribing lethal
doses of medication. Until very recently, it was only legal in one state in the United States, Oregon.
However, just this past November, Washington also hopped on board. Opinions about the topic vary;
some justify it by saying they are putting an end to the patient s suffering, some simply see it as
killing, and others think it depends on the situation. With that being said, if it is ok, at what point do
we know? How does this fit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is a case in which those who support euthanasia justify themselves. In most cases euthanasia is
usually done by giving a patient a lethal injection or giving them an overdose of medication. Assisting
a patient s suicide can be characterized by a doctor prescribing lethal doses of medication to a patient;
Pharmacists dispense them, sometimes with instructions to take all of this with a light snack and
alcohol to cause death (American Thinker). Advocates of assisted suicide strongly believe that no one
should be forced to stay alive if they do not want to, but the problem with this is that sometimes it is
done without the patient s consent, or without them being in the correct state of mind to know what
exactly they are agreeing to. Anyone has the right to commit suicide if they wish to, but euthanasia
and assisted suicide is one person aiding the death of another, and that is what is immoral. It changes
from the right to die to the right to kill. Oregon was the first and only state for nearly ten years to
legalize assisted suicide. According to USA Today, In 1994 Oregon voters by a margin of 51 percent
approved the Death with Dignity Act , which was passed in November of 1997 (USA Today). The
Supreme Court ruled that there was no constitutional right or prohibition of euthanasia or physician
assisted suicide, thus allowing Oregon to experiment with the legalization of it. The Act allows

O meally suggests that Ellison also incorporates the Blues within his character developments for a
very different purpose, other than those of mood and rhythmic sequences. He suggests that Ellison
intentionally focuses on the music of Armstrong so as to introduce a concept of materialistic
fascination within the narrator. Just as the catchy tunes of the Blues, the narrator too is fascinated by
the concepts of equality and justice and is haunted by racial imbalances however, he is simply
intrigued by such ideologies but never really tries to divulge his entire aspirations into the cause. He
waits for a magical idea, which for him will be the ticket to success and consequently allow him to

can be recognized early on in the prologue where he strings 1369 light bulbs in the underground hole

The Case Against Perfection By Michael Sandel
In Michael Sandel s essay, The Case Against Perfection, he starts by wondering if genetic engineering
is moral. He used Dolly the cloned sheep as an example of bioengineering that could be used on
humans in the future. He then compares it to designer children, children whose parents choice their
genes for them, and points out that similar arguments that can be made against both of them.
Sandel talks about why we have a problem with medical and genetic enhancements, using examples.
The first is muscle enhancement. Using the research of H. Lee Sweeney, of the University of
Pennsylvania, on muscle repair and strengthen that was used on mice as an example, Sandel shows the
potential of genetic engineering advancements. The second was about memory enhancement. Some
research was mentioned about inserting memory linked gene into mice embryo makes them smarter.
Sandel focuses more on the market for memory enhancing drugs because the market is a better
indication of what people would do with improved memories. There is already a way to make children
taller; human growth hormone is given to children with a hormone deficiency to help them grow to

The Repository for Germinal Choice, one of the first sperm banks in American, wanted to improve the
gene pool by getting the sperm of intelligent men and selling it to intelligent women. This failed
because it did not care about what the customer wanted. Another sperm bank, Califorina Cryobank, is
oriented toward what the customer wants. They only take sperm for college graduates because that is
what the customer wants. Sandel used these examples of sperm banks to show that even though
Cryobank only cared about the customer it was able to achieve what Repository for Germinal Choice

Meursault And Raskolnikov
How can the way a character acts or treats other people push the plot of a book forward? Fyodor
Dostoevsky s novel Crime and Punishment and Albert Camus novella The Stranger both feature main
characters guilty of committing murder; however, the the two main characters, Meursault and
Raskolnikov, act very differently and so their fates end up very different. The main character of the
The Stranger is a man simply called Monsieur Mersault. Camus presents Meursault as an honest
person. This doesn t necessarily work in his favor, as he tells people repeatedly that things don t
matter. He is very emotionally detached from everyone and everything. He does not even cry when his
own mother dies, and he does not love the woman who is supposed to be his love interest. Meursault

Meursault, true to his characterization, doesn t really react. He feels no guilt because he does not feel
like anything matters. The murder he committed was just another thing that happened. He is caught
and put on trial for his crimes. The prosecutor uses his indifference toward the death of his mother and
everything else to get him convicted. Even after his conviction, he doesn t show any emotion.
Raskolnikov, however, immediately becomes paranoid about what he has done and thinks that
everyone knows. He falls ill after his crime and the people around him start to believe he has gone
insane. This leads people to suspect him of committing the crime. Perhaps had he not acted the way he
did, no one would suspect of the crime. Despite actually having feelings after his crime, Raskolnikov
also feels no guilt for killing the old woman because of his philosophy about extraordinary men. He
simply dislikes the fact that he wasn t successful and therefore not an extraordinary man. Raskolnikov
ends up confessing to the crime and because of his supposed insanity after the murder it is decided
that he is not some simple

Cirque Du Freak
People today love to hear about mythology, but usually bores readers because of its unrealisticness.
The Darren Shane Saga combines the real world and the vampire world in not only a way that is
interesting to the reader, but also realistic. The way that the series is put together will not bring a
reader to boredom because of the unexpected events that will take place, therefore keeping the reader
hooked to the series.
In most movies/books today the end can be expected from the beginning, but in this series the events
that take place cannot be expected which makes it a very interesting read. The series starts off with
The Cirque Du Freak (Book 1) with two friends named Darren and Steve. Darren is very interested in

This is when Darren Shan really starts to leave readers mystified readers in the way that events take
place and how they take place. Darren and Larten must make a trip to a place called Vampire
Mountain ( white house of the vampire world ). When there the questioning of Larten s decisions
leads to the decision that Darren shall partake in the Trials of Death ( trials in which vampire generals,
something like congress, and vampire princes must take in order to gain their positions ). Usually in a
book the main character somehow miraculously avoids death in even the hardest situations, but Darren
Shan twists this standard definition of a story and makes it to where Darren does survive but not
without scars and burns and amputation almost. Darren is forced to flee by one of his close friends
Kurda Smahlt to avoid death but when fleeing from the mountain Darren sees Kurda kill one of the
fellow vampires, making Kurda a traitor to the clan. In an ordinary book the character surpasses all the
troubled situations and achieves success, but Darren does not only lose respect from the vampires but
also is on the brink of death from injuries in the Trials of

  • 2. The Irony Of Optimism In Voltaire s Candide When Cunégonde is first introduced in the story of Candide By Voltaire the only thing mentioned is her looks. She is described as a seventeen year old ruddy cheeked girl, fresh, plump, and desirable (p. 186). Right off the bat she is presented as a sexually desirable character. This perception of her is what Voltaire eventually uses to nullify philosophical optimism. Cunégonde s first involvement in the plot involved a sexual act. She was walking near the castle when she saw Dr. Pangloss in the underbrush; he was giving a lesson in experimental physics to her mother s maid (p.186). In seeing these two have sex, she then had a sexual fantasy of her own about Candide. This fantasy is what then led up to her physical interaction with Candide that resulted in him getting kicked out of the castle. Twice she has been mentioned in the first two pages of the story and the only understanding a reader ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The world that is, is the best of all possible worlds. The author writes this book to point out the foolishness and the irony of this philosophical thought. Cunégonde s reputation goes along with that. In the real world, men value chastity in women and a woman s virginity is something that she holds dear. When that is stripped away from her without her consent, it is not at all met with the attitude that the characters in Candide have met it with. Characters like Candide himself or evens some of the women in the story like the old woman seem to be very nonchalant about women being sold as prostitutes or being raped. Voltaire uses this as a way to point out to readers the foolishness of this philosophical idea. If in fact, this were the best of all possible worlds, a woman s virtue means nothing and people should not care about it. This is where readers can see that Cunégonde is merely a tool Voltaire uses to invalidate this idea, which shows that her role as a minor character is an significant ... • 3. Genetically Modified Organisms And Stem-Food Report With reference to a recent news report analyse how genetically modified products are created and evaluate the use of stem cells to combat disease. Genetic modification is the manipulation of DNA in an organism. It involves extracting a gene from one organism then inserting it into another organism that is usually of a different species but can be the same. The genes can also be manufactured instead of being extracted from the organism. Genetic modification can be done to plants, animals and even food. Genetically modified products can benefit humans in many ways such as genetically modified plants can be used to reduce vitamin deficiency (CGP A2 Level Biology Revision Guide, 2009). In 2005, UK scientists developed a new strain of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lastly, the agrobacterium tumefaciens insert the genes into the plant cells DNA which then creates transformed rice plant cells. Now the rice plant cells grow on a selective medium. Only the transformed rice plants will be able to grow due to them containing the marker gene which is needed to grow on this medium (CGP A2 Level Biology Revision Guide, 2009). Although golden rice is great in the way it helps with a vitamin A deficiency and in reducing colour blindness, there are disadvantages, such as there are concerns that food from genetically modified plants might harm people and fears that it could cross breed with and contaminate wild rice (BBC Bitesize, 2017). Evaluation of stem cells and other methods of genetic modification. Stem cells are unspecialized cells which can develop into any cell. Stem cells then divide to become specialized through a process called differentiation. Stem cells in humans are found in early embryos and in a few places in adults (CGP AS Level Biology Revision Guide, 2008). Stem cells are found in every human body in limited amounts and can be taken from adult tissues without harm (Thought Co, 2017). The two main types of stem cells are embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. Most embryonic stem cells are from IVF clinics that have been donated for research purposes with informed consent from the donors. They do not come from fertilized eggs in a woman s body. ... Black Diggers captured the exclusion, the violence and loss of opportunities faced by the Indigenous Australians. Australia 100 years on still shows similar hostilities towards Aboriginal individuals, some movement has been may towards Aboriginals being equal but still not much meaningful change has occurred. Wright demonstrates the limit opportunity that the Indigenous people had for their inherited land. The land that they owned was taken over by the white Europeans and called Australia a name never heard of in the Aboriginal community. Wright demonstrated that the land was taken over, and they had no choice in the decision they had to live with the choice. Furthermore Wright empathised their unpresented land right when presenting the Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act of 1917 , the public servant had the authority to acquire land of the Indigenous without giving them a choice you can t just take the land off us , however the reality is that they could. • 8. A Brief History of Iraq Iraq borders Turkey to the North and Iran to the East. Iraq was colonized by Great Britain in particular, British efforts to colonize and govern Iraq were miscalculated and self serving, resulting in the creation of an unbalanced and violent nation, divided along ethic and separation lines of many different ethnic backgrounds. The failures of the Cairo Conference along with the lack of understanding between Britain s understanding of the Arab nationalist movement and the appointment of Faisal as King, have led to conflict and violence as unity has been disabled within the country. Conflict in Iraq can be contributed to early colonization/westernization and Al Qaeda. Early colonization within Iraq and the British rule over Iraq created a lot of turmoil and uncertainty within the country. During the infamous World War 1 the British attacked the Ottoman Empire in Iraq, Britain came in with a bang and wanted to put its own influence on the country immediately. The British army sought out local sheikhs to implement power over the population. The British had hoped to empower the Sheikhs by giving them the authority to arrest criminals and collect taxes based on their own set of beliefs, and in return the British decided to give the Sheikhs subsidies and weapons and would even sometimes lend them soldiers. Nationalist aspects of understanding were put into force by Iraq at the time, but British rule quickly eliminated any talk of nationalism within Iraq. With not many people ... When asked why he sat, he stated, I ve been very clear from the beginning that I m against the systematic oppression of black Americans (Willingham). The quarterback received some negative reaction to his method of protest and, after three games, met with former NFL player and Army veteran Nate Boyer to discuss his protest. With Sex Criminals, the use of colour to represent different means and the passing of time in the book was very key to the story. In both books there was a struggle with their sexual identity where the main characters are trying to figure out who they really are. Both books do this differently. In fun Home it is a struggle for a father and daughter, while in Sex Criminals it is two individuals that share the same power but have to figure it out by themselves in the beginning. In Sex Criminals, the main character was a lone and no one would help her on her journey to discovering what was happing with her body and who she really was. Despite the positive attributes that the Mongols brought, the Mongol conquests also caused a great deal of destruction to the societies of Afro Eurasia during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The barbaric violence used by the Mongols during these times contradicts the peace and prosperity they supposedly yearned for. Contemporary academic deliberations of Love s Alchemy by John Donne and On My First Son by Ben Jonson has given rise to one controversial issue: whether love should be labeled as uncertainty. These contrasting views have also been articulately conveyed through words, such as, Alchemy and Farewell in the individual poetic works of both Donne and Jonson, respectively, with one conclusion: to alter men by first enticing them to a fantasy world, wherein they are rendered unstable, and later, compelling them to correct themselves.
