The Wise Sea Poem Analysis
The Wise Men Speak
(An Analysis on Sailing)
William Butler Yeats, was a poet from the Victorian age. Philosophers say that Yeats was one of the
greatest poets of all time, William Butler Yeats is widely considered to be one of the greatest poets of
the 20th century (Adams). One of Yeats most famous poem was Sailing to Byzantium. In the poem
Sailing, Yeats expresses three very important messages. The messages that Yeats expresses in Sailing
are, that the soul wants to leave body when it s about time to go, the elders are more wise, and that
younger generation doesn t listen to their elders. In the poem Sailing, Yeats expresses that as our body
ages our souls are ready to be set free. Our souls never age, but our bodies do. As our bodies start to
age our souls are ready to be set free from our aging bodies. Yeats states that when our souls are close
to being set free they start to sing, Soul clap its hands and sing, louder sing (11). The soul is
celebrating that it s about to be set free from its aging body. Our bodies are dead, but our souls
continue to live on. Dr. Duncan MacDougall of Haverhill, Massachusetts states, Human beings are
possessed of souls which depart their bodies after death and that these souls have detectable physical
presences were around well before the 20th century . Our souls continue to live after we are no longer
living. Another message represented in the poem Sailing, is that our elders are wise. Our elders are
wiser than the young because

Relationship Between Diomedes And The Timocratic Soul
According to the criteria presented in the Republic book eight, Diomedes is most related to the
Timocratic soul being spirited and rational. The Timocratic soul has good and bad qualities that
Diomedes falls under. The Timocratic soul, in part, is explained as being in love with honor that to no
surprise were most characters in the Iliad like Diomedes who put his life on the line for that honor. I
also say that he fits the Timocratic soul most because he is a man who is spirited and rational, his
spirited soul will not deny him a mission and his rational soul won t deny him reason. During a small
gathering before raiding the Trojan camp Diomedes rose to the occasion and said to Nestor My pride
urges me to go the enemy camp over there, but

The Competitive Advantages Zappos
Introduction
This article is a discussion about the competitive advantages Zappos has, using resource based view
and dynamic capabilities analysis. Although there are SWOT framework and Porter s five forces
model etc. to understand the firm s competitive advantage, those are environmental analysis, which is
only the half story as Barney,(1995) suggested. So, an analysis of a firm s internal strengths and
weaknesses is required. Barney (2001) states resource based logic can help managers more completely
understand the kind of resources that help generate sustained strategic advantages, help them use this
understanding to evaluate the full range of resources their firm may possess, and then exploit those
resources that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But market is dynamic, during these 10 years, more and more shopping websites are established, since
if a firm hands competitive advantage, others will always attempt to imitate it, although Zappos is still
running smoothly, the same capability, may not pass the VRIO test. On the other hand, from he view
of dynamic capability, zappos operation model was to provide exceptional product selection by padre
rim with shoe companies, then it changed, all shipments were from its own inventory, (Z,10) because
the old model lacks of accuracy and had unreliable information updates. Undeniably, one of Zappos
competence is their distribution system, Zappos noticed that there should be some changes, not only
the shipping model, also include the allocation of ground delivery, ship delivery and air delivery, or
the facilitating of automatic machines, as time goes by, Zappos is always updating this competency.
Dynamic capability can be seen as a critique of RBV, There is also literature suggesting, that DC is
outcome of RBV, Dynamic capability is defined as capabilities that endow firms with competitive
advantage in changing environments. Both capabilities and DC are organization . A DC is the VRIO s
O . To be a source of competitive advantage it must be VRI. So dynamic capability can be seen as a
firm integrate its valuable, rare and costly imitated resources over times. From this perspective, when
we analyze Zappos distribution competency, we can also say that Zappos is organizing its distributing
resource and equipping it in order to be responsive to address the changes taking place in the
environment. (Zolo and Winter,

The Causes And Cons Of Chemistry In Chemistry
After completion of the transesterification reaction employed at the optimal conditions, the catalyst
was collected from the reactant mixture by filtration; the catalyst was washed with hexane several
times to remove the adhered oil particles, and then dried at 110°C for 2 hr. The catalyst was reused
several times without further treatment to obtain FAME from WCSO.
To evaluate catalyst stability, the optimum amount of CaO that was obtained by examining the
operating condition was stirred with 38ml methanol at the optimum conditions obtained. After the
catalyst was separated, methanol was mixed with 30 ml WCSO and the reaction was carried out under
the optimum conditions, 65°C, methanol: oil ratio 30:1, 3 hr. and 300 rpm.
3. Results and discussion
3.1 Catalyst characterization
The synthesized CaO catalyst was subjected to different temperatures and times of calcination. The
calcination time and temperature change the catalyst structure; consequently, this affects catalyst
activity and the concentration of FAMEs produced. The impact of different calcination temperatures,
700 °C, 750 °C, 800 °C, 850 °C, and 900 °C, and durations, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 hr, were tested for the
transesterification of WCSO to produce biodiesel. The eggshell powder showed an apparent color
different from the color before calcination as shown in Figure 1. Table 3 shows that exposing egg shell
powder to a longer time and higher temperature of calcination results in a lighter white color. Being

Why Did The General Sherman End The Civil War
One of the most colorful characters of the civil war was a General named William T Sherman. During
the period of the war (1861 1865),General Sherman went full circle from being forced to retire on
trumped up charges that he was insane, to becoming a key player in bringing this bloody war to a
close. On Sherman s ¨March to the Sea¨he and his men stole food and livestock and burned the houses
and barns of people who tried to fight back. The Yankees were ¨not only fighting hostile armies, but a
hostile people,¨ Sherman explained. Here are three reasons why sherman s march needed to happen.
First, someone needed a tactic to end the war. It was its third year in the civil war and people didn t
want it to go on any longer so with Sherman s ¨Total War¨ tactic it did just that and ended the war in
1865. Without it who knows how much longer the Civil war would of lasted. ... Show more content on

Shemans acts help change the way the war was fought by using his tactic which as I said before
helped end the civil war. Third, the purpose of the ¨March to the Sea¨ was to frighten Georgia´s
civilian population into abandoning the Confederate cause which it did. Sherman believed that the
confederacy derived its strength not from its fighting forces but from material and moral support of
sympathetic southern whites. If he destroyed their farms, railroads, and houses he knew the confederate
war effort would collapse. It did and the North won the war because of

The Congo Reform Association ( Cra )
Women played an important role in the campaign for public support for reform of King Leopold II s
Congo Free State and the forced labor that took place there. Both in the Congo and in Europe women
influenced the perception and reaction to the État Indépendant du Congo and the Congolese people.
The treatment of Congolese women by the Force Publique and white colonial officials such as Léon
Rom inspired both sympathy from European missionaries and rebellion from the Congolese. While in
Europe and America reformers like Englishwomen Alice Harris and Mary Morel campaigned for
reform in the Congo Free State. Through newspaper articles, organizations and photographs they
swayed many influential members of English and American society church and government officials,
businessmen, and authors to their side. The Congo Reform Association(CRA) also had two women on
its executive council. Through their treatment at the hands of the regime, involvement in public
campaigns against Leopold, and a sex scandal, women in the both the Congo and in Europe
encouraged opposition to King Leopold II s draconian rule of the État Indépendant du Congo. In the
Congo Free State women were kidnaped by the Force Publique and company militias and their return
was contingent on the men laboring for the State. Often women were raped, killed, starved, mutilated,
or forced to work as prostitutes by the Force Publique and white colonial officials like Eugène
Rommel(126). On the fifth of December 1893

Socialization means transforming tacit knowledge on another form of tacit knowledge. In other words,
understanding tacit knowledge that is derived from interaction between people. Here, the concept of

to make it possible to learn by other people. Combination is related to transform explicit to explicit
knowledge. It is based on the structuring of different explicit knowledge for creating new knowledge
and eventually, internalization consists of moving from explicit to tacit knowledge, to make it your

The Cultural Background Of Greek Myths
As Christopher Vogler quoted in The Writer s Journey, A myth... is a metaphor for a mystery beyond
human comprehension. It is a comparison that helps us understand, by analogy, some aspect of our
mysterious selves. Various countries have myths that connect to their personal background culture.
When it is compared, each myth has a different perspective of how things were created in the daily life
of a person. This includes countries such as Greece and Egypt and how their backgrounds influences
their cultures. Cultural backgrounds play an important role in society. One moral lesson that is learned
in Greek myths is about mother and daughter relationships. Egyptians also included Ma at in their
myths as a symbol of harmony and peace. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Every day, women, slaves, and children were required to stay indoors, while men had freedom to go
wherever they wanted. Women were responsible for household work and children were also required
to stay inside. Until the age of six, children were educated by their mother. Slaves were treated well at
times and they did as they were asked by their owners. (Lin and Don Donn, Greek Mythology for kids
). Many Greek men spent their time observing and studying the planets and how astronomy worked.
This led to philosophers creating and studying mathematical proofs. Literature and religious beliefs
expanded as well as a new intake of inventions. People often told stories orally since many were not
educated of reading and writing. Many were undergoing different perspectives of the world and how
they viewed it (Pecorino, Greek_Culture ). Additionally, a Greek myth such as the story of Demeter
and Persephone was well known. Demeter was a sister of Zeus, who grew and harvested crops. She
loved her daughter, Persephone dearly. As she did, the crops would grow healthier. When Persephone
grew into a beautiful goddess, Hades fell deeply in love with her. Hades was the god of the
Underworld. He decided to kidnap Persephone in his chariot and take her back to the underworld,
where he locked her in a room. She refused to eat a single grain of food and in complete desperation,

Marcus Aurelius Meditations Upon Ideas
Meditations upon Meditations 2nd century emperor Meditations, a response within an ever growing
philosophical dialogue between the philosophers of the past and present. As the ruler of the known
world, Marcus s worldview is surprisingly modest, positing that the human experience, regardless of
length, is a thing of equality as every man possesses only the present moment in which he lives.
Within this work, the emperor addresses the men of the Roman world (therefore, those who could read
in Greek and had an interest in philosophy or learnedness) in an educated fashion and exhorts them to
lead a balanced and good life without fear of death, Bear in mind always that as a Roman and a man

It urges men to recognize that they are all brothers and offenses committed upon each other are the
result of ignorance of the aforementioned ability to distinguish between good and evil. It also wishes
to emphasize that suffering in one s life is not the product of the external world, rather it is either a
natural event that man must overcome or the soul committing violence to itself through thoughtless,
foolish, or evil actions. This perspective encourages individuals to improve oneself rather than to
blame the world for events beyond their control. Death is something to be embraced as a natural end
to a very brief existence, a mere point as he calls it. Fame is discarded as meaningless, and with its
death a narrative of a personal journey emerges rather than one that is endorsed by the observations of
others. All this points to Marcus Aurelius being a man of great humility despite his great power and

Thomas Edison And The Light Bulb Essay
Everyone in their lifetime has heard the name Thomas Edison at least once. However, if you asked
those same people why Thomas Edison was so famous, ninety percent of the time they would tell you
it was because he invented the light bulb, and each of them would be completely wrong. Thomas
Edison did not invent the light bulb; in fact, someone had the idea for it almost one hundred years
before Mr. Edison was even born. To invent something means to come up with the idea in the first
place, as well as to actually carry it out.
In this paper I will give you insights into the life of Thomas Edison and explain why people get
confused in thinking the light bulb was his idea. He also had several other interesting experiments, and
we will take a look at what people thought of them. I believe Thomas Edison is one of the greatest
minds that have ever existed on planet earth, and the rest of this paper will be devoted to showing you
why this is true.
If one stopped and thought about all the amazing and wonderful inventions that this world has ever

things as automobiles, their new iPhone, advancements in medicine, heaters, air conditioning, power
tools, gaming systems, IPods, etc., and the list could go on and on.

Prescription Drug Abuse Among College Students
Prescription drugs are being used for nonmedical purposes and it is becoming so common that it has
been deemed an epidemic. Literature suggest that prescription drug abuse among college students is
high. This could be due to the stressful environments college students are placed in. Prescription drugs
will be discussed broadly but in some instances, limited to opioids. Many people are prescribed
medication on a daily basis and not everyone uses them as they are intended. What happens to the
leftover medication? Do people share their medication with other people? Why do people use
prescription medication for nonmedical purposes? What is being done to fight the epidemic? What
treatment(s) is/are available? These questions and the answers will be discussed later on.
There are many possible reasons why a person may use prescription drugs non medically. According
to a study conducted by Rozenbroek and Rothstein (2011) most non medical users use socially with
friends rather than alone. To come to this conclusion, they sent out a questionnaire that contained
information regarding three categories: opioids, CNS depressants, and stimulants. The questionnaire
included demographic information, relevant information (how they obtained the drug), and to make it
less of a hassle, they gave the questionnaire during regular class times to unsuspecting students. They
discovered from 428 completed questionnaires that opioids and CNS depressants were mainly used
medically, and stimulants were

Gender and Social Norms in Shakespeare s As You Like It...
Gender and Social Norms in As You Like It
Shakespeare based his comedy As You Like It primarily on three other works. Its plot follows the
basic structure of Rosalynde, published in 1590 by Thomas Lodge. The Tale of Gamelyn, written by
an unknown author in the mid fourteenth century, is a violent Middle English narrative that was found
among Chaucer s papers and provides further details for Shakespeare s work. With the Forest of
Ardenne serving as an escape for our main characters, Shakespeare takes his details from the countless
Robin Hood ballads popular in Medieval England. This paper will examine how Shakespeare s
adaptations and alterations of emphasis and plot from these source works have turned our attention to
the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the final paragraph, Lodge reinforces his focus on men:
Here Gentlemen may you see in EUPHUES GOLDEN LEGACIE, that such as neglect their fathers
precepts, incurre much preiudice; that diuision in Nature as it is a blemish in nurture...concorde
sweetest conclusion, and amitie betwixt brothers more forceable than fortune.
This moral, pointed out to us in the last paragraph of Renaissance writing, says nothing about the
matters of interaction between men and women, only the interaction between brothers. The women in
the plot are deemphasized. In As You Like It, Shakespeare breaks all convention and a female
character delivers the epilog and speaks directly to the women calling them to action. The playwright
goes so far as to have Rosalind address the women audience members first. Shakespeare clearly alters
his plot to place primary emphasis on the women s roles in his play, how they effect change and how
they move and affect a world dominated by men.
Lodge s Rosalynde lives in a world where human behavior is repeatedly explained by reference to
long lists of infallible precepts that are said to determine our reactions, not as a reaction to what other
people have done or how they feel about each other (Stout 279). Shakespeare views love as grounded
in mutual behavior, and the interaction between people helps make possible what will happen in the
future. In Lodge, a common explanation for a character s actions is some sort

Why Horses Were Used During The Civil War
After reading the Tucker diary, I became extremely interested in how animals, specifically horses,
were being used during the Civil War. In Tucker s diary there is a page where it appears he is taking
inventory of the horses with him. I noticed that one of the tallies is crossed out, and this made me
wonder what sort of ailments or battle wounds horses faced. Also, the sheer amount of horses that are
accounted for must have been expensive to buy, and I wondered the cost of horses during this time
period. Lastly, I couldn t help but contemplate what role horses played in winning battles or the war
altogether. With these thoughts in mind I began to question how the portrayal of horses in early
American literature differed from how horses were actually treated and used in the Civil War. I came
to realize that horses in The Sovereignty and Goodness of God, Shepard Lee, and Tucker s diary were
all treated in the same way that historians say they were used. In Mary Rowlandson s captivity
narrative, horses were used as a means of food in desperation and as an effective way to transport
people from place to place. While held in captivity with the Nipmuc, Narragansett, and Wampanoag
tribes, Rowlandson was moved around by walking with the rest of the tribe, or by being placed on the
back of a horse (Rowlandson 83). Horses were the most common mode of transportation for soldiers
for soldiers during the Civil War. Throughout the course of the war, the North used 3.4 million horses

The Importance Of College Writing
I learned the slang phrase One and done in the NBA (National Basketball Association) Draft this
summer. For non basketball fans, it simply means that aspiring basketball players will try to get
themselves drafted in the NBA after completing only one year in college. During the NBA draft night,
the player may or may not get drafted depending on if their skills are viewed by the managers and
coaches enough to play in the professional level. Throughout my college writing experience, I have
been a One and done kind of writer. In this case, it means turning in the first drafts of the papers I
write without major revision, something that I regret not doing. Not only because of the not so great
feedbacks and grades that I got but also because I knew that I could have done better but for some
reasons I decided not to.
According to The Writing Process by Michael E. Adelstein, Once you understand why you seem to be
naturally adverse to revision, you may overcome your resistance. (18) In order to overcome my refusal
to revision when it comes to my writing process, I provided the analyses of the different reasons why I
turned into a One and done writer in the next few paragraphs. Analyzing these reasons would help me
not only to include revision as part of my own writing process but to also maybe learn how to make it
enjoyable.
Coming up with the first draft of a paper is a long process itself that is why doing the revision feels
like a tedious process. As someone who does not

Carbon Tax Persuasive Essay
The new carbon tax which was implemented in 2017 will be doing great things for the environment.
The government of Alberta website stated that they will be using 6.2 billion dollars to help the
environment. Some of the money will be going to wind farms, solar panels, and other environmentally
friendly infrastructure. The carbon levy will help ease the change from coal and gas energy to more
environmentally friendly energy sources. In addition; the tax will cover 78 90% of Alberta carbon
emissions and in a couple of years when the environmentally friendly infrastructure is in place we can
expect that number to go up. If everybody was fully educated about all of the benefits of the carbon
tax then almost nobody would be against it. But since all Albertans have heard is that it will cost them
money they have been against it. Just as the carbon tax may be taking money out of our pockets

NIMS, what is it? What does it stand for? Well, it is a term that we expect all FEMA leaders to
memorize and understand its purpose. NIMS stands for the National Incident Management System.
This system was introduced in the early months of 2004 by (DHS) the Department of Homeland
Security. The NIMS system allows the Federal, State, tribal, and local governments, the private sector,
and nongovernmental organizations to work ( National Incident Management , 2011, p. 6) jointly to

Response incident management capabilities. Whereas, National Incident Management System (NIMS)
provides the stencil for the administration of incidents irrespective of scope, size, or cause, the
National Response Framework (NRF) will provide the necessary mechanisms and structure for
national level policy of emergency response.
Together, the NRF and the NIMS integrate the capabilities and resources of various governmental
jurisdictions, incident management and emergency response disciplines, non governmental
organizations, and the private sector into a cohesive, coordinated, and seamless national framework
for domestic incident response ( What is NIMS Federal , n.d., p. 2).

Research Paper On Schiele
Schiele was an Austrian artist, who specialized in painting, printmaking and drafting. He was born in
the year 1890 in Vienna, Austria where he died at age 28 in 1918(Wolf.) Schiele had grown up in a
typical family setting with two older sisters, making him the third child in his family. From a very
young age, Schiele possessed and showed his artistic ability. After his father had passed away Schiele
started to attended Vienna s Akademie der bildenden Kunste (Academy of Fine Arts) which Gustav
Klimt has also attended (Wolf). At age 16, Schiele was the youngest student who to be enrolled at the
Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. (Chu) While he attended school here for the short amount of time, he
artistic ability and style was pushed. Egon Schiele was inspired by the artists around him, especially
Gustav Klimt. Schiele sought out Klimt (wolf). These two artists bonded very quickly and it s because
of this bond between them that sprung Schiele s art career forward. A group of Schiele s friends left
the academy in a protest against their school s way of teaching. From this Schiele found a new group

Components Of Building A Gaming Pc
My topic of interest this week is learning about a few components involved in building a gaming PC. I
believe this is a great topic for me as my intended professional goal is to become a video game
developer. Where would a professional game developer, like myself, be without a proper gaming PC.
Plus, I thought this would be a great opportunity for me to share my passion. I have owned many
gaming consoles, PC s, and Mac s over the years. If you are a true gamer, you will already know
which platform is the best for you. Gaming consoles like the PS4 or XBOX ONE, while a great source
for gaming entertainment are, cheaper because they do not have a graphics card, instead they have an

They also have the lowest number of developed games between all the platforms. So now I m thinking
why can t I have both a iMac and gaming PC? Well, after doing some research, I think having both
might actually be a strong possibility for me. Now getting into the main portion of my topic why PC is
the best for gaming. First off, PC s use only a GPU, allowing this item to be upgraded while
advancements in technology take place. This, in turn, allows a PC to have full access to incredible
graphics, giving the gamer a higher level gaming experience. There are three primary components that
are the foundations to building a great PC, they are the central processing unit (CPU), also called a
processor, the video card and memory (RAM). (Bellerophon08, 2013) You will find many different
brands and styles, such as an AMD FX 8350 AM3+ 4.0Ghz (CPU) or a Kingston HyperX blu
1600mhz 2x4GB (RAM). They all depend on what suits your individual needs and budget. One of the
most exiting components I get to talk about, is the motherboard. Just like its title this is what brings all
the components together in harmony. One interesting fact I didn t know, but was crucial to the proper
function of a PC, is a motherboard socket type. Seeing as they are not interchangeable, you need to
make sure you know what CPU you are investing in, as you are unable to mix and match a
motherboard and CPU brand. For example, if you

Student Achievement Essay
Each year, children are failing in school. As the years progress, the number of children failing keep
rising. In Closing the Achievement Gap , Kati Haycock, the Director of the Education Trust at the
American Association for Higher Education, states Between 1970 and 1988, the achievement gap
between African American and white students was cut in half, and the gap separating Latinos and
whites declined by one third. That progress came to a halt around 1988, however, and since that time,
the gaps have widened (6). As a result, people are doing studies and have come up with several

In Race and the Achievement Gap , he uses a study from the Roy Wilkins Center for Human Relations

gifted and talented school programs, which affects both the test score gap and the gap in academic
performance (Berlak 2). Amy L. Wax, Professor of Law for The University of Virginia School of Law,
on the other hand, shows a different cause in failure. She does not share the same views with Steele or
Berlak. In her article, The Threat in the Air , she states, We resist confronting the social and behavioral
causes of short falls in academic performance. Stark differences between groups in marriage rates,
family stability, paternal involvement, parenting practices and discipline, and other habits and values,
are associated with children s disparate academic success. (Wax 2). Wax also uses the idea that causes

A Passage To India Summary
The work of W.E.B. Du Bois and E.M. Forster, both add their voices to the U.S. Supreme Court s
debate on segregation. In 1896, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation could be
compatible with equality. Then, in 1954, the court reversed itself and declared that separate is
inherently unequal. Forster defends separation as both equal and unequal but under different
circumstances. He defends it as equal when they are separated in different countries and unequal when
they are separated in the same country. Du Bois agrees that legal separation along one or more color
lines contributes to inequality and he deplores laws such as Jim Crow but he also thinks it is important
for different races to develop separately. Both authors are able to see separation in a positive and a
negative light. A Passage to India features many conflicts between Indians and the English who have
traveled to India to see the real India. There are racial stereotypes used and biases held which Forster
would most likely say is because the English are segregated from the Indians geographically. In
Chandrapore, Forster s fictional city on the banks of the Ganges River, the Indians live in the mud
near the river while the English live on the top of a hill far above the grime. Forster believes that
segregation within a nation promotes inequality and prevents different races from making connections
with each other. Because these two groups of people were not used to being around each other, the

Essay about The 1994 Baseball Strike
The 1994 Baseball Strike On August 12, 1994 professional baseball players went on strike for the
eighth time in the sports history. Since 1972, negotiations between the union and owners over contract
terms has led to major economic problems and the absence of a World Series in 1994. All issues were
open for debate due to the expiration of the last contract. Until 1968, no collective bargaining
agreement had ever been reached between the owners and the players (Dolan 11). Collective
bargaining is the process by which union representatives for employees in a bargaining unit negotiate
employment conditions for the entire bargaining unit (Atlantic Unbound). Instead, the players were at
the mercy of each owner who possessed the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Two major issues led directly to the interruption and eventually the cancellation of the entire season.
After a 28 0 vote among the owners, they agreed to share revenue on the condition they could get the
players to accept a salary cap. The issue of revenue sharing was directly linked to the salary cap. By
taking this action, the owners signaled they had come to realize the problem of disparity between big
market teams (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago) and small market teams (Seattle, Pittsburgh,
Milwaukee). The problem, however, was that because the owners linked their revenue sharing with a
salary cap, the players felt they were being asked to solve the owners financial disparity problem.
There is a noticeable difference in team payrolls, as displayed in 1993, when the the payroll of the
Toronto Blue Jays was $48.4 million, compared with San Diego Padres payroll of only $10.6 million
(Layden 17). Therefore, the idea of revenue sharing, wherein big market teams would transfer monies
to the small market teams, was a good one, but it caused disputes among the owners as to how the
formula would be worked out. Not all of the small market teams were in bad shape financially. In fact,
some that had built or were building new stadiums such as Baltimore, Cleveland, and Texas were
doing quite well. It was not until June 14, 1994, that the owners finally presented their collective
bargaining proposal, 18

The focused low cost strategy purposed to create a price advantage for the company. Usually, a

Oskar Schindler s Death Of The Jewish Ghetto
Many words can be used to describe Oskar Schindler; partier, alcoholic, womanizer, etc, but the most
unlikely word that can be used is savior, which he proved to be in the 1940s. Schindler was definitely
a sinner, but he did the unthinkable at the time, He [Schindler] was no saint. And yet, the same man
would prove to have depths of courage and humanity rare at any time even rarer during the time in
which he lived. (Roberts, pg. 6). During the grueling years of the Holocaust and World War II, Oskar
Schindler proved that love and kindness still existed by rescuing over 1,000 Jewish residents of
Krakow, Poland. By doing this alone, the Nazis would have killed him because at that time, it was
even illegal to be touching a Jew, let alone saving them. One major factor that led to the saving of the
Jews was the liquidation of the Krakow Jewish Ghetto, Schindler witnessed a few hours of beastiality
with which the liquidation [of Krakow] was executed. The horror of what he saw undoubtedly played
a role in his indignation and his unfailing and compassion with the persecuted [Jews]. (Thompson. pg.
138). After the invasion of Poland, the Nazis set up several ghettos around the country, one of which
was in Krakow, where they held Jews. Eventually these ghettos didn t seem worthy of Adolph Hitler s
Final Solution so these ghettos were liquidated and thousands of it s residents were massacred and
sent to concentration camps, Schindler experienced one of these liquidations. Oskar

Rape In A Streetcar Named Desire
Unfortunately, rape is just as commonplace today as it has been throughout history. In Tennessee
Williams classic play A Streetcar Named Desire, Blanche, the protagonist, is a victim of rape. Just as
so many victims today aren t believed, Blanche was also denied the gift of validation when her sister
did not believe her. Rape victims have been refused the right of seeing their accusers punished, and the
concept of rape culture allows victims to be blamed instead of the perpetrators. This has not changed
since the days of Streetcar, although recently women have started to fight like never before for the
rights of victims to justice.
Over time, the definition of rape has changed drastically. In the past, the idea of rape was always
glossed over. It was okay for a husband to force his wife to do things she did not want to do because
she would be considered property to him. This lead women to feel ashamed to come forward and talk
about what had happened to them because they would be belittled by law enforcement. Law
enforcement always favored ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When A Streetcar Named Desire was written, the words rape , forced and sex were rarely even used.
In euphemism to these words, the word attack was often used as a way to indirectly say that an
individual had been sexually assaulted without sounding too harsh or unpleasant. Unlike rape, the
word attack has several definitions ranging from to begin hostilities against to to try and destroy;
especially with verbal abuse. While women were being both physically and mentally abused, men
treated rape as no big deal, and often considered it an unfortunate event for the victim to experience
within their lives. Women were usually encouraged by their relatives to forget about the rape and
move on. If they try to stick up for themselves, they would often be shut down, and were disbelieved.

This concept, despite its variety of meanings and definitions, is used to refer to many aspects of social

We have become disillusioned and no longer expect the world to become a better place.
Metranarratives have partly been discredited because, in an era of global media in which we learn
more and more about other peoples beliefs and lifestyles, it becomes less and less possible to regard
one lifestyle or one belief system as the true one .
Dominic Strinati
Strinati suggests that, post modern TV and film become preoccupied merely with surface style and
imagery, rather than deeper underlying themes, which might relate to the realities of the human
condition. Action blockbuster movies dwell on special effects, rather than strong plots and TV drama
departs from realist plots of the 1960 s (which attempted to look at serious issues such as
homelessness, Cathy Come Home and embraces a surreal world in which reality is often confused;
For example, Twin Peaks, or more recently The X Files and American Gothic. Kaplan (1987)

A teacher once told me, One mans trash is another mans treasure, what he doesn t appreciate the next
man will. Until recently analyzing this statement I always pondered about it as a metaphor using the
thoughts, and ideas of people, but after reading Garbology I have come up with a literal process of

United States which ends up in one of the over 3,500 landfills. According to Edward Humes, the
author of Garbology, Garbage has become one the most accurate measures of prosperity in the twenty

As discussed in lesson 5, the concept of DSCA is a complex provision that authorizes DOD assistance
based on DOD Directive 3025.18 in the event federal, state, and local resources are exhausted. In
order to improve DSCA and the domestic relationships between federal, state, and local partnerships,
the DOD introduced initiatives to clarify the framework for providing military support. This includes
the creation of the Emergency Preparedness Liaison Officer (EPLO) to facilitate the allocation of
DOD resources in support of civil authorities upon a declared disaster/emergency. Moreover,
ambiguity found within the IRA provision undermines the ability for commanders to provide
assistance in lieu of DSCA approval methods. Thus, Hurricane Katrina sparked the DOD s review of
the IRA provision, in order to close the federal response gap for providing immediate disaster support
by identifying current legislative barriers. For instance, military leadership did not fully comprehend
the authority obtained under the IRA provision, which delayed military aid and assistance during
Hurricane Katrina (Leshinsky, 2006). For example, the military responded under the provision of the
National Response Plan (NRP), which required the formal DSCA requests from FEMA. This delayed
the response of the surrounding military units and is one of the aforementioned barriers that spawned

loving attitude at the company. He arm wrestled the CEO of another airline for the rights to use a
slogan and posed as Elvis for an advertising campaign. Kelleher seemed to have boundless energy,
sleeping only four to five hours a night and reading several books each week. When he was made
aware that a night shift could not attend company celebrations due to their schedules, he turned up at
an airport at 2am to throw a special barbeque.
Kelleher told Investor¡¦s Business Daily that the Southwest spirit was ¡§the core of our success.
That¡¦s the most difficult thing for a competitor to imitate. They can buy all the physical things. The
things you can¡¦t buy are dedication, devotion, loyalty ¡V the feeling you are participating in a
crusade.¡¨ Stories abounded of Southwest employees going the extra mile: an employee helped a
stranded traveller change his tyre, flight attendants visited passengers in hospital, and a reservation
agent drove an 85 year old woman from DFW to Love Field so that she could make her connection.
Kelleher said the company hired for attitude, enthusiasm and sense of humour. Many applicants were
made to take personality tests.

Trader Joe s: Value Based Pricing
In the textbook, the author added the case about Trader Joe s. I would like to mention that I have never
been inside of a Trader Joe s and I have only ever seen one. Until I read this case I didn t even know it
was a food store, but apparently it is very popular so I might just have to go visit one. The thing that
shocked me the most was that Trader Joe s only stocks 4,000 products. The case author says more than
80 percent of the store s brands are private label goods, sold exclusively by Trader Joe s.
The case says that Trader Joe s has put its own twist on the food price value equation call it cheap
gourmet. On page 292, there is a series of steps that describe value based pricing. However, there are

Trader Joe s doesn t have some big store that you can notice from down the road, they do not locate
their buildings in an area that you can see from the highway, instead a typically Trader Joe location is
in a low rent, out of the way area. Unlike other food stores, Trader Joe s does not have on site
bakeries, delis, seafood sections, butchers, and large produce sections. The case author mentions
Trader Joe s buys directly from suppliers and negotiates hard on price. They also have no form of
advertising, their biggest type of promotion is word of mouth. You would think that a company whose
biggest promotion is word of mouth would not be as successful, but somehow it works for Trader Joe
s.
In the fourth step, a company designs products to deliver desired value at target price. As I stated
earlier Trader Joe s only stocks 4,000 products, with over 80 percent being private goods and sold
exclusively at their stores. I m sure customer service also helps when it comes to the Trader Joe s
experience. In the case, the author says a special store atmosphere, exclusive gourmet products,
helpful and attentive associates. One of Trader Joe s regular customers, Chrissi Wright, from the case,
said it s all about value and price what you get for what you

A Report Analyzing The Viability Of The Nuclear Fusion
Dear Upper Hutt City Council
Today I am writing you a report analysing the viability of the use of Nuclear Fusion as a energy source
in your community. I will analyse the feasibility of this kind of nuclear power in your community by
firstly explaining what nuclear fusion is and how it works. I will then use calculations to estimate how
this new energy produced could compare to the amount of energy used by the city currently.
Nuclear Fusion occurs when two small nuclei fuse to form a larger nucleus (this is not to be confused
with fission). A large amount of energy is released, which can be explained simply enough by the
binding energy per nucleon. The nucleons in extremely small nuclei have more energy than those in
slightly larger nuclei. Because these nucleons have more energy, they have less binding energy per
nucleon (because the same total binding energy must be split evenly, therefore more energy=less
binding energy to go around). Because of this, when the reaction of two smaller nuclei fusing takes
place, the nucleons must have to lose energy. The subsequent energy that they lose is the energy that is
released. For all of this to happen, a fusion reaction requires utterly immense temperature of millions
of degrees celcius, just in order to force the nuclei to move fast enough to fuse and stick.
The Prime example of Nuclear Fusion is the sun. It is obvious that atoms do not rest: the hotter they
get, the quicker they move. Temperatures reach 15,000,000° C in the

My Experience At New York City
For Christmas and my sixteenth birthday present my parents planned a trip for me to go to New York
City with my dad. Two days after Christmas me and my dad hopped on the plane and headed for New
Jersey and New York City. I was very excited because I had been to New Jersey but I never visited
New York City before. I also remember being excited because of that fact that I would actually get to
see snow in the winter since it rarely ever snowed in Houston during the winter. Then that next year
during my junior year in High School, I had the opportunity to go on a trip to Los Angeles with my
drill team. I was very excited to get to go to both of these huge awesome cities in that two year period.
Both of these cities were unique in their own way. So what makes a city similar to another city and
what makes a city different to another city? The people, the weather, the vibe, the monuments and
popular attractions are all some of the components of what makes a city unlike any other city. My two
favorite cities besides Houston are New York and Los Angeles. I have visited both and like them both
equally for different reasons. While New York and Los Angeles definitely have their similarities, they
also have many differences that set them apart from each other. In New York they experience all four
seasons. The leaves change colors in the fall, it snows in the winter, the grass gets greener because it
rains a lot in the spring, and it can get very sunny and unbearably hot in the summer.

Harvard Business School Invented The Concept And Believed
Harvard Business School invented the concept and believed that competitive advantage cannot be
understood by looking at a firm as a whole. The disadvantages of a value chain could include a
company becoming too segmented and result in a construed conception of the company s most
important values. Thus, the importance of a successful value chain lies within the linkage of the
different processes it incorporates. All in all, the value chain can provide organizations a strategic
framework for managing the hundreds of activities that go into making the final product. Schott is a

Although Schott is has been successful throughout the life of the company, it surely is not thriving.
The annual bottom lines of the company continuously fluctuate and significant improvements have
been hard to achieve without significant changes to specific processes respective to each facility. Like
that of any large organization, company wide policies make opportunities for change extremely
difficult for any specific department or process. As Porter noted, competitive advantage cannot be
understood by looking at the firm as a whole and Schott has yet to fully adopt this logic. Much like a
waterfall effect, decisions and orders are trickled down throughout the organization based on an
employee s position of power. The company has incorporated a system that rewards diligence opposed
to innovative thinking which can lead to a very limited approach to reaching new achievements for the
company overall. Schott cannot make significant improvements by incorporating broad changes
throughout the organization. Each department within each facility needs to be treated more as a
separate, individual entity that can utilize its respective strengths. Schott s North American facility has
a completely different culture and structure compared to that of the main headquarters in Germany, so
why are the two not managed to

Hillary Clinton Dishonest Analysis
One source used to evaluate Hillary Clinton comes from an article titled Hillary Clinton emails what s
it all about? by Anthony Zurcher, a North American reporter. It is published by BBC News and the
purpose of the publication was to inform people about the issue with Clinton s emails. The
information in this source comes from quotes from Clinton herself, reports from The State
Department, and FBI directors from an investigation. It is valid information because it is supported by
evidence from a variety of places and it is also very well researched as seen by the amount of detail in
the article. Zurcher is an active reporter who covers US politics and writes about current happenings in

The Most Famous Poet By William Yeats
The Important Isn t Appreciated
(An analysis of Sailing to Byzantium by William Yeats) William Butler Yeats is considered the most
famous poet throughout the modernism era. The most memorable writings are considered romantic
visionary writings; romantic meaning looking towards that past and visionary looking towards the
future. Throughout the twentieth century these ideas were not very popular or even talked about very
often. Yeats had a new approach that drew people in and made them realize the idealism of these
ideas. Because of this it made William Yeats the most famous poet of the modernism period. Richard
Hopkins, a biographer explained this about Yeats, I assign Yeats the high praise of having written
some the most beautiful poetry ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Every single person goes through life and has completely different experiences then the next person.
Not a single person can truly step into someone else s shoes. Throughout Sailing To Byzantium
William Yeats explains, O sages standing in God s holy fire As in the gold mosaic of a wall, (lines 17
18). By saying this, Yeats alludes to the fact those who a have had to sit on the sideline and watch
those around them progress, truly know and can relate to every situation. The knowledge gained from
not only participating in the activity, but also watching others do the activity will allow those people to
relate to almost every situation. Nadia Goodman wrote an article about ways to give advice, in which
she explains, Rather, advice comes freighted with implications regarding power and autonomy. This
simply means that advice only means something if taken into account and used. Sailing To Byzantium
by William Butler Yeats also explains that great art speaks in three different ways; past, present, and
future. In this era poetry was very popular and was well accepted. The work of Yeats was well
accepted from the beginning of his career. His poetry has a way of speaking to the past, present, and
future people. The poetry he wrote outlasted the era and himself to continue on into the 21st century
and proceed to be very influential. Yeats explains

Public Drinking Water Fluorination Research
Fluoride is a mineral found in the earth s crust with proven benefit in protecting against dental caries
better known as cavities (Colgate Oral Care, 2016). Fluoride is available through oral health care
products and disseminated through the public water supply in every state across the country. Even
rural residents receiving their water from a well have trace concentrations of fluoride. Individuals
using private well water are urged to have their fluoride levels analyzed by a laboratory; suggestions
on reputable laboratories are provided through the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
website (CDC.gov, 2015).
According to the EPA, the recommended level of fluoride in drinking water to maintain good oral
health is 0.7 mg/L (CDC.gov, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Steel and Tariffs Essay
Steel and Tariffs
We have all heard this joke. Only now the horse has been replaced with consumers of steel in the US
steel industry. Why? Many companies in our economy that use steel as an input to produce their goods
are staggering due to recent extraordinarily high steel prices. President Bush dropped a tariff on
imported steel on Thursday March 4th; according to basic economics, this cancellation of the steel
import tariff should have dropped the price for US domestic consumers. Unfortunately though, that
hasn t happened. Steel prices are currently at record highs and many forecast even higher prices to
come. This puts huge pressure on small businesses that are dependent on steel for their well being.
With higher prices ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On one side protection for the employees of domestic steel producers sounds good. After all shouldn t
we support our fellow Americans and their employment needs? Indeed we should, but it is hard to
determine which costs the American public more jobs, the tariff or the lack there of. Plus, which jobs
are to be determined the most important, those of the steel workers, or those of the down stream users
of steel? It may be in America s best interest to protect our small business owners and ourselves as the
increased price from the tariff will most definitely be passed on to us, the consumer.
The Argument for Tariffs
Although tariffs usually cause domestic prices to increase they can have a positive effect on our
economy and specifically our domestic producers of steel and their employees. The US trade policy
has historically been protectionist in nature, and congress, the principle body of power for import
policy, heavily favored domestic firms over their foreign competitors (Irwin 146). As a result,
domestic steel producers have had tariffs and quotas in place for many years. An effective tariff raises
revenue for our US government and can help to subsidize domestic production at the expense of
foreign producers. This is good because the American government receives money from foreign
exporters that it would not have otherwise had access to. This money can then be used in domestic
government policies and could

Virginia Woolf
The impact of now and here The beginning of the twentieth century witnessed a major change in the
understanding of the world and, with no doubt, in creating a new relationship with reality and
whatever this provided to every human being. This change has influenced many artists and writers,
including Virginia Woolf, who eventually became one of the most important modernists of the
twentieth century. In their book entitled Modernism 1890 1930, Bradbury and McFarlane define
modernism as an art of a rapidly modernizing world, a world of rapid industrial development,
advanced technology, urbanization, secularization and mass forms of social life but also the art of a ...

This kind of writing mirrors verbally what many experimental visual artists were doing in terms of
painting at the tum of the twentieth century. Woolf s step in this direction in literature shows the
influence of Roger Fry, particularly the Post Impressionist Exhibition and other influential artists that
Woolf came into contact with through Bloomsbury and mutual acquaintances. These artists inspired
Woolf to use elements of both post impressionism and cubism verbally to make her stories like
paintings that move, clear and distinct but always shifting. She incorporates both the emotional
elements of post impressionism and the fragmented methods of cubism to create her own
representation of life. Mrs Dalloway allows us to enter a world where we can see clearly how time and
space interview. Through her character s eyes, we can feel and see everything they see, we get to
understand a world not only through our perspective, but from various points of view. Moreover,
Virginia Woolf allows us to enter every character consciousness, to know every hidden thought and
perhaps to understand the roots of suffering and happiness. Even thought is hard to keep up with the
rhythm of the story, the reader can concentrate and switch between times and places as the writer

  • 3. The Wise Sea Poem Analysis The Wise Men Speak (An Analysis on Sailing) William Butler Yeats, was a poet from the Victorian age. Philosophers say that Yeats was one of the greatest poets of all time, William Butler Yeats is widely considered to be one of the greatest poets of the 20th century (Adams). One of Yeats most famous poem was Sailing to Byzantium. In the poem Sailing, Yeats expresses three very important messages. The messages that Yeats expresses in Sailing are, that the soul wants to leave body when it s about time to go, the elders are more wise, and that younger generation doesn t listen to their elders. In the poem Sailing, Yeats expresses that as our body ages our souls are ready to be set free. Our souls never age, but our bodies do. As our bodies start to age our souls are ready to be set free from our aging bodies. Yeats states that when our souls are close to being set free they start to sing, Soul clap its hands and sing, louder sing (11). The soul is celebrating that it s about to be set free from its aging body. Our bodies are dead, but our souls continue to live on. Dr. Duncan MacDougall of Haverhill, Massachusetts states, Human beings are possessed of souls which depart their bodies after death and that these souls have detectable physical presences were around well before the 20th century . Our souls continue to live after we are no longer living. Another message represented in the poem Sailing, is that our elders are wise. Our elders are wiser than the young because ... • 4. Relationship Between Diomedes And The Timocratic Soul According to the criteria presented in the Republic book eight, Diomedes is most related to the Timocratic soul being spirited and rational. The Timocratic soul has good and bad qualities that Diomedes falls under. The Timocratic soul, in part, is explained as being in love with honor that to no surprise were most characters in the Iliad like Diomedes who put his life on the line for that honor. I also say that he fits the Timocratic soul most because he is a man who is spirited and rational, his spirited soul will not deny him a mission and his rational soul won t deny him reason. • 6. The Competitive Advantages Zappos Introduction This article is a discussion about the competitive advantages Zappos has, using resource based view and dynamic capabilities analysis. Although there are SWOT framework and Porter s five forces model etc. to understand the firm s competitive advantage, those are environmental analysis, which is only the half story as Barney,(1995) suggested. So, an analysis of a firm s internal strengths and weaknesses is required. Barney (2001) states resource based logic can help managers more completely understand the kind of resources that help generate sustained strategic advantages, help them use this understanding to evaluate the full range of resources their firm may possess, and then exploit those resources that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But market is dynamic, during these 10 years, more and more shopping websites are established, since if a firm hands competitive advantage, others will always attempt to imitate it, although Zappos is still running smoothly, the same capability, may not pass the VRIO test. On the other hand, from he view of dynamic capability, zappos operation model was to provide exceptional product selection by padre rim with shoe companies, then it changed, all shipments were from its own inventory, (Z,10) because the old model lacks of accuracy and had unreliable information updates. Undeniably, one of Zappos competence is their distribution system, Zappos noticed that there should be some changes, not only the shipping model, also include the allocation of ground delivery, ship delivery and air delivery, or the facilitating of automatic machines, as time goes by, Zappos is always updating this competency. Dynamic capability can be seen as a critique of RBV, There is also literature suggesting, that DC is outcome of RBV, Dynamic capability is defined as capabilities that endow firms with competitive advantage in changing environments. Both capabilities and DC are organization . A DC is the VRIO s O . To be a source of competitive advantage it must be VRI. So dynamic capability can be seen as a firm integrate its valuable, rare and costly imitated resources over times. From this perspective, when we analyze Zappos distribution competency, we can also say that Zappos is organizing its distributing resource and equipping it in order to be responsive to address the changes taking place in the environment. • 7. The Causes And Cons Of Chemistry In Chemistry After completion of the transesterification reaction employed at the optimal conditions, the catalyst was collected from the reactant mixture by filtration; the catalyst was washed with hexane several times to remove the adhered oil particles, and then dried at 110°C for 2 hr. The catalyst was reused several times without further treatment to obtain FAME from WCSO. To evaluate catalyst stability, the optimum amount of CaO that was obtained by examining the operating condition was stirred with 38ml methanol at the optimum conditions obtained. After the catalyst was separated, methanol was mixed with 30 ml WCSO and the reaction was carried out under the optimum conditions, 65°C, methanol: oil ratio 30:1, 3 hr. and 300 rpm. 3. Results and discussion 3.1 Catalyst characterization The synthesized CaO catalyst was subjected to different temperatures and times of calcination. The calcination time and temperature change the catalyst structure; consequently, this affects catalyst activity and the concentration of FAMEs produced. The impact of different calcination temperatures, 700 °C, 750 °C, 800 °C, 850 °C, and 900 °C, and durations, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 hr, were tested for the transesterification of WCSO to produce biodiesel. The eggshell powder showed an apparent color different from the color before calcination as shown in Figure 1. Table 3 shows that exposing egg shell powder to a longer time and higher temperature of calcination results in a lighter white color. Being whiter ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Why Did The General Sherman End The Civil War One of the most colorful characters of the civil war was a General named William T Sherman. During the period of the war (1861 1865),General Sherman went full circle from being forced to retire on trumped up charges that he was insane, to becoming a key player in bringing this bloody war to a close. On Sherman s ¨March to the Sea¨he and his men stole food and livestock and burned the houses and barns of people who tried to fight back. The Yankees were ¨not only fighting hostile armies, but a hostile people,¨ Sherman explained. Here are three reasons why sherman s march needed to happen. First, someone needed a tactic to end the war. It was its third year in the civil war and people didn t want it to go on any longer so with Sherman s ¨Total War¨ tactic it did just that and ended the war in 1865. • 9. The Congo Reform Association ( Cra ) Women played an important role in the campaign for public support for reform of King Leopold II s Congo Free State and the forced labor that took place there. Both in the Congo and in Europe women influenced the perception and reaction to the État Indépendant du Congo and the Congolese people. The treatment of Congolese women by the Force Publique and white colonial officials such as Léon Rom inspired both sympathy from European missionaries and rebellion from the Congolese. While in Europe and America reformers like Englishwomen Alice Harris and Mary Morel campaigned for reform in the Congo Free State. Through newspaper articles, organizations and photographs they swayed many influential members of English and American society church and government officials, businessmen, and authors to their side. The Congo Reform Association(CRA) also had two women on its executive council. Through their treatment at the hands of the regime, involvement in public campaigns against Leopold, and a sex scandal, women in the both the Congo and in Europe encouraged opposition to King Leopold II s draconian rule of the État Indépendant du Congo. In the Congo Free State women were kidnaped by the Force Publique and company militias and their return was contingent on the men laboring for the State. Often women were raped, killed, starved, mutilated, or forced to work as prostitutes by the Force Publique and white colonial officials like Eugène Rommel(126). On the fifth of December 1893 ... • 12. The Cultural Background Of Greek Myths As Christopher Vogler quoted in The Writer s Journey, A myth... is a metaphor for a mystery beyond human comprehension. It is a comparison that helps us understand, by analogy, some aspect of our mysterious selves. Various countries have myths that connect to their personal background culture. When it is compared, each myth has a different perspective of how things were created in the daily life of a person. This includes countries such as Greece and Egypt and how their backgrounds influences their cultures. Cultural backgrounds play an important role in society. Women were responsible for household work and children were also required to stay inside. Until the age of six, children were educated by their mother. Slaves were treated well at times and they did as they were asked by their owners. (Lin and Don Donn, Greek Mythology for kids ). Many Greek men spent their time observing and studying the planets and how astronomy worked. This led to philosophers creating and studying mathematical proofs. Literature and religious beliefs expanded as well as a new intake of inventions. People often told stories orally since many were not educated of reading and writing. Many were undergoing different perspectives of the world and how they viewed it (Pecorino, Greek_Culture ). Additionally, a Greek myth such as the story of Demeter and Persephone was well known. Demeter was a sister of Zeus, who grew and harvested crops. She loved her daughter, Persephone dearly. As she did, the crops would grow healthier. When Persephone grew into a beautiful goddess, Hades fell deeply in love with her. Hades was the god of the Underworld. Marcus Aurelius Meditations Upon Ideas Meditations upon Meditations 2nd century emperor Meditations, a response within an ever growing philosophical dialogue between the philosophers of the past and present. As the ruler of the known world, Marcus s worldview is surprisingly modest, positing that the human experience, regardless of length, is a thing of equality as every man possesses only the present moment in which he lives. Within this work, the emperor addresses the men of the Roman world (therefore, those who could read in Greek and had an interest in philosophy or learnedness) in an educated fashion and exhorts them to lead a balanced and good life without fear of death, Bear in mind always that as a Roman and a man you should perform your duties well and with dignity and ... This perspective encourages individuals to improve oneself rather than to blame the world for events beyond their control. Death is something to be embraced as a natural end to a very brief existence, a mere point as he calls it. • 14. Thomas Edison And The Light Bulb Essay Everyone in their lifetime has heard the name Thomas Edison at least once. However, if you asked those same people why Thomas Edison was so famous, ninety percent of the time they would tell you it was because he invented the light bulb, and each of them would be completely wrong. Thomas Edison did not invent the light bulb; in fact, someone had the idea for it almost one hundred years before Mr. Edison was even born. To invent something means to come up with the idea in the first place, as well as to actually carry it out. In this paper I will give you insights into the life of Thomas Edison and explain why people get confused in thinking the light bulb was his idea. He also had several other interesting experiments, and we will take a look at what people thought of them. I believe Thomas Edison is one of the greatest minds that have ever existed on planet earth, and the rest of this paper will be devoted to showing you why this is true. If one stopped and thought about all the amazing and wonderful inventions that this world has ever seen, what would be number one on that list? Most people in today s world would probably say items that they use on a daily basis. If we made a list of what some people might say, it might include such things as automobiles, their new iPhone, advancements in medicine, heaters, air conditioning, power tools, gaming systems, IPods, etc., and the list could go on and on. • 15. Prescription Drug Abuse Among College Students Prescription drugs are being used for nonmedical purposes and it is becoming so common that it has been deemed an epidemic. Literature suggest that prescription drug abuse among college students is high. This could be due to the stressful environments college students are placed in. Prescription drugs will be discussed broadly but in some instances, limited to opioids. Many people are prescribed medication on a daily basis and not everyone uses them as they are intended. What happens to the leftover medication? Do people share their medication with other people? Why do people use prescription medication for nonmedical purposes? What is being done to fight the epidemic? What treatment(s) is/are available? These questions and the answers will be discussed later on. There are many possible reasons why a person may use prescription drugs non medically. According to a study conducted by Rozenbroek and Rothstein (2011) most non medical users use socially with friends rather than alone. To come to this conclusion, they sent out a questionnaire that contained information regarding three categories: opioids, CNS depressants, and stimulants. • 16. Gender and Social Norms in Shakespeare s As You Like It... Gender and Social Norms in As You Like It Shakespeare based his comedy As You Like It primarily on three other works. Its plot follows the basic structure of Rosalynde, published in 1590 by Thomas Lodge. The Tale of Gamelyn, written by an unknown author in the mid fourteenth century, is a violent Middle English narrative that was found among Chaucer s papers and provides further details for Shakespeare s work. With the Forest of Ardenne serving as an escape for our main characters, Shakespeare takes his details from the countless Robin Hood ballads popular in Medieval England. In the final paragraph, Lodge reinforces his focus on men: Here Gentlemen may you see in EUPHUES GOLDEN LEGACIE, that such as neglect their fathers precepts, incurre much preiudice; that diuision in Nature as it is a blemish in nurture...concorde sweetest conclusion, and amitie betwixt brothers more forceable than fortune. This moral, pointed out to us in the last paragraph of Renaissance writing, says nothing about the matters of interaction between men and women, only the interaction between brothers. The women in the plot are deemphasized. In As You Like It, Shakespeare breaks all convention and a female character delivers the epilog and speaks directly to the women calling them to action. The playwright goes so far as to have Rosalind address the women audience members first. Shakespeare clearly alters his plot to place primary emphasis on the women s roles in his play, how they effect change and how they move and affect a world dominated by men. Lodge s Rosalynde lives in a world where human behavior is repeatedly explained by reference to long lists of infallible precepts that are said to determine our reactions, not as a reaction to what other people have done or how they feel about each other (Stout 279). Shakespeare views love as grounded in mutual behavior, and the interaction between people helps make possible what will happen in the future. In Tucker s diary there is a page where it appears he is taking inventory of the horses with him. I noticed that one of the tallies is crossed out, and this made me wonder what sort of ailments or battle wounds horses faced. Also, the sheer amount of horses that are accounted for must have been expensive to buy, and I wondered the cost of horses during this time period. Lastly, I couldn t help but contemplate what role horses played in winning battles or the war altogether. With these thoughts in mind I began to question how the portrayal of horses in early American literature differed from how horses were actually treated and used in the Civil War. I came to realize that horses in The Sovereignty and Goodness of God, Shepard Lee, and Tucker s diary were all treated in the same way that historians say they were used. In Mary Rowlandson s captivity narrative, horses were used as a means of food in desperation and as an effective way to transport people from place to place. While held in captivity with the Nipmuc, Narragansett, and Wampanoag tribes, Rowlandson was moved around by walking with the rest of the tribe, or by being placed on the back of a horse (Rowlandson 83). Horses were the most common mode of transportation for soldiers for soldiers during the Civil War. Throughout the course of the war, the North used 3.4 million horses and ... For non basketball fans, it simply means that aspiring basketball players will try to get themselves drafted in the NBA after completing only one year in college. During the NBA draft night, the player may or may not get drafted depending on if their skills are viewed by the managers and coaches enough to play in the professional level. Throughout my college writing experience, I have been a One and done kind of writer. Not only because of the not so great feedbacks and grades that I got but also because I knew that I could have done better but for some reasons I decided not to. According to The Writing Process by Michael E. Adelstein, Once you understand why you seem to be naturally adverse to revision, you may overcome your resistance. (18) In order to overcome my refusal to revision when it comes to my writing process, I provided the analyses of the different reasons why I turned into a One and done writer in the next few paragraphs. There are three primary components that are the foundations to building a great PC, they are the central processing unit (CPU), also called a processor, the video card and memory (RAM). In 1896, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation could be compatible with equality. Then, in 1954, the court reversed itself and declared that separate is inherently unequal. Forster defends separation as both equal and unequal but under different circumstances. He defends it as equal when they are separated in different countries and unequal when they are separated in the same country. Du Bois agrees that legal separation along one or more color lines contributes to inequality and he deplores laws such as Jim Crow but he also thinks it is important for different races to develop separately. Both authors are able to see separation in a positive and a negative light. A Passage to India features many conflicts between Indians and the English who have traveled to India to see the real India. There are racial stereotypes used and biases held which Forster would most likely say is because the English are segregated from the Indians geographically. In Chandrapore, Forster s fictional city on the banks of the Ganges River, the Indians live in the mud near the river while the English live on the top of a hill far above the grime. By taking this action, the owners signaled they had come to realize the problem of disparity between big market teams (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago) and small market teams (Seattle, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee). The problem, however, was that because the owners linked their revenue sharing with a salary cap, the players felt they were being asked to solve the owners financial disparity problem. Oskar Schindler s Death Of The Jewish Ghetto Many words can be used to describe Oskar Schindler; partier, alcoholic, womanizer, etc, but the most unlikely word that can be used is savior, which he proved to be in the 1940s. Schindler was definitely a sinner, but he did the unthinkable at the time, He [Schindler] was no saint. And yet, the same man would prove to have depths of courage and humanity rare at any time even rarer during the time in which he lived. (Roberts, pg. 6). During the grueling years of the Holocaust and World War II, Oskar Schindler proved that love and kindness still existed by rescuing over 1,000 Jewish residents of Krakow, Poland. By doing this alone, the Nazis would have killed him because at that time, it was even illegal to be touching a Jew, let alone saving them. On average Americans wastes 220 million tons of waste generated each year in the United States which ends up in one of the over 3,500 landfills. According to Edward Humes, the author of Garbology, Garbage has become one the most accurate measures of prosperity in the twenty first century America and the world, which proves that trash is a means to improving the success rate of Americans. As discussed in lesson 5, the concept of DSCA is a complex provision that authorizes DOD assistance based on DOD Directive 3025.18 in the event federal, state, and local resources are exhausted. In order to improve DSCA and the domestic relationships between federal, state, and local partnerships, the DOD introduced initiatives to clarify the framework for providing military support. This includes the creation of the Emergency Preparedness Liaison Officer (EPLO) to facilitate the allocation of DOD resources in support of civil authorities upon a declared disaster/emergency. Moreover, ambiguity found within the IRA provision undermines the ability for commanders to provide assistance in lieu of DSCA approval methods. Thus, Hurricane Katrina sparked the DOD s review of the IRA provision, in order to close the federal response gap for providing immediate disaster support by identifying current legislative barriers. For instance, military leadership did not fully comprehend the authority obtained under the IRA provision, which delayed military aid and assistance during Hurricane Katrina (Leshinsky, 2006). For example, the military responded under the provision of the National Response Plan (NRP), which required the formal DSCA requests from FEMA. This delayed the response of the surrounding military units and is one of the aforementioned barriers that spawned from the bureaucratic nature of requesting military ... • 42. A Report Analyzing The Viability Of The Nuclear Fusion Dear Upper Hutt City Council Today I am writing you a report analysing the viability of the use of Nuclear Fusion as a energy source in your community. I will analyse the feasibility of this kind of nuclear power in your community by firstly explaining what nuclear fusion is and how it works. I will then use calculations to estimate how this new energy produced could compare to the amount of energy used by the city currently. Nuclear Fusion occurs when two small nuclei fuse to form a larger nucleus (this is not to be confused with fission). A large amount of energy is released, which can be explained simply enough by the binding energy per nucleon. The nucleons in extremely small nuclei have more energy than those in slightly larger nuclei. Because these nucleons have more energy, they have less binding energy per nucleon (because the same total binding energy must be split evenly, therefore more energy=less binding energy to go around). Because of this, when the reaction of two smaller nuclei fusing takes place, the nucleons must have to lose energy. The subsequent energy that they lose is the energy that is released. For all of this to happen, a fusion reaction requires utterly immense temperature of millions of degrees celcius, just in order to force the nuclei to move fast enough to fuse and stick. The Prime example of Nuclear Fusion is the sun. It is obvious that atoms do not rest: the hotter they get, the quicker they move. Temperatures reach 15,000,000° C in the ... Many companies in our economy that use steel as an input to produce their goods are staggering due to recent extraordinarily high steel prices. President Bush dropped a tariff on imported steel on Thursday March 4th; according to basic economics, this cancellation of the steel import tariff should have dropped the price for US domestic consumers. Plus, which jobs are to be determined the most important, those of the steel workers, or those of the down stream users of steel? It may be in America s best interest to protect our small business owners and ourselves as the increased price from the tariff will most definitely be passed on to us, the consumer. The Argument for Tariffs Although tariffs usually cause domestic prices to increase they can have a positive effect on our economy and specifically our domestic producers of steel and their employees. The US trade policy has historically been protectionist in nature, and congress, the principle body of power for import policy, heavily favored domestic firms over their foreign competitors (Irwin 146). As a result, domestic steel producers have had tariffs and quotas in place for many years. An effective tariff raises revenue for our US government and can help to subsidize domestic production at the expense of foreign producers. This is good because the American government receives money from foreign exporters that it would not have otherwise had access to.
