nontraditional sense that does not adhere stringently to the conditions of "pure" exoticism or
transcultural composing. Some pieces, such as Britten's Death in Venice, blur the lines of distinction

listener. Thus, through analyzing the use of exotic elements and their intended purpose in Britten's

the homosexual attraction of opera's main character. Musical exoticism is the use of non–western
elements in western music for the purpose of defining and representing exotic elements or
"othering,"–that is to label a group or place as different from one's own (Locke, p.45). Musical
exoticism is a diverse genre, and pieces can adopt a variety of forms. Therefore, musical exoticism
is regarded as a spectrum rather than definitive categorization. On one end of the spectrum is "pure"

How children are raised and the environment they are in from the time they are born until they are
on their own plays a huge part in how their personality is shaped and what their morals are. One
thing that affects personality and morals is the religion that they associate themselves with, or what
they believe in; many times the rituals that go along with their beliefs has a large effect on the
children, usually more so than the belief itself. The second thing that plays a part in the shaping of
your personality are the rituals done culturally that aren't directly from your religion.

Java. The Balinese culture has changed drastically over the years but I am going to focus on the
1930's. Mothers are primarily responsible for caring for the children and have specific rituals and
tactics to how to raise their children to shape their personality to how they think it should be.
The Balinese culture makes the young aware of their sex from a very early age. While repeatedly
saying "beautiful" (or a word meaning feminine beauty) people would pat the young girl's vulva and
for young boys, they would applaud the boys penis while repeatedly saying "handsome" (or a word
meaning handsome male)(Mead 42).
The infants in the Bali culture often look like dolls, although they aren't treated like dolls. The

World music is basically any type of music from all around the world. This music is generally
noticeable from the other countries, either by instruments used, or lyrically it is different. These
things are what make it easy to tell the difference between the different countries and what type of

The Jegagog is the lowest pitched of the gangsa, the gangsa family consists of instruments which
have brass or bronze keys suspended over a resonating bamboo tube. The Balinese gangsa differs
from the Javanese because the keys make a louder sound and are designed to be struck with different
hammers. This instrument also requires long resonating bamboo tubes so is played while sitting on a
chair or bench. It has five keys (1, 2, 3, 5, and 6). This pattern is commonly found in both Java and
Bali. It plays at submultiples of the pokok and is played particularly at important structural points as
do the gongs.
The Jublag is the next higher pitched of the gangsa, this instrument also requires long resonating
bamboo tubes so is often played while sitting on a chair or bench. The Balinese version has 5 keys
(1, 2, 3, 5, and 6) seven key Jublag are also commonly found in Bali. It usually plays at submultiples
of the pokok; the keys are struck more frequently than the jegogan and usually less frequently than
the Ugal. It is one octave above the jegogan and shares tones with the Ugal. Another name for the
Jublag is Calung.
The Kantil shares its lower octave with the Pemade. They are above the Ugal which plays the
melody. There are usually 10 keys (2, 3, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and i) so the instrument spans two
octaves.

In 1846 the Dutch used Balinese to salvage and claims over shipwrecks as the pretext to land
military forces in northern Bali. In 1894 the Dutch chose to the Sasak of Lombok, which had been
invaded by the Balinese. After a rebellion against their Balinese Rajah in bloody battles, the

"Deep Play: Notes on the Balinese Cockfight" is divided into eight or nine sections, each with their
own distinct style and message. The first section is titled "The Raid" and is told in the style of a
narrative. In it, Geertz reflects on his time in Bali with his wife in April of 1958. He reflects on the
way the Balinese people treated him; during his first week or so in Bali, Geertz and his wife were
treated as though they didn't exist. After witnessing a cockfight and running away just like the
Balinese people who also attended, however, Geertz and his wife were treated as though they were
