Tuscaloosa Business Environment
In 2009, the Free the Hops bill passed in Alabama allowing the sale of beer with an ABV content
higher than 6.0%. A nearly five year process provided Alabama with the opportunity to join 46 other
states in the sale of high gravity craft beer. In 2012, Tuscaloosa s city council also voted to change the
city s zoning ordinance which allowed for brewpubs and breweries. This series of law changes
provided a culture change and sparked a flourishing craft beer scene in the city of Tuscaloosa. Druid
City Brewing Co., owned by Bo Hicks and Elliot Roberts, became the first official brewery in
November of 2012.

Immanuel Kant s Philosophy On Moral And Good And Evil...
Moral philosophy is a branch of philosophy which focuses and investigates the ideas of right and
wrong and good and evil behavior. Moral philosophers have researched and justified the logical
consequences of moral or ethical beliefs. When we think of morals, we think of rules that tell us which
actions are right and which are wrong. But, do human beings have the ability to judge for themselves,
based on the facts of a situation, what is right and wrong, what they should do and not do? Well,
according to Immanuel Kant, who is one of the most influential philosophers of all times, believes that
human beings should not be making decisions based on the facts of a situation, but should act
according to universal moral codes that apply in all situations regardless of the outcome. Kant refers to
these universal moral codes as categorical imperatives and must be fully followed at all times across
all circumstances. In his work, Groundwork of Metaphysic of Morals, Immanuel Kant talks about
three formulations of imperative. The first formulation of imperative is Act only according to that
maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law without
contradiction. Kant believes that our actions should be the same in all situations, regardless of the
outcome. Some acts are always wrong, even if the act leads to an admirable outcome. Kant believes
that emotions and consequences should not play a role in moral action. We are morally obligated or
have a duty

Common Good Questions
Final Exam America: Land of the free and home of the brave. That was the idea that the people had
hundreds of years ago. How they would feel now that we are a country that is enslaved to profit and
not the least bit brave when it comes to speaking truth. Mark Shield, author of the article Missing: Any
Challenge for the Common Good, brings to the attention of how todays tactic of running things has
become more than a little undermining. The presidential campaign of 2016 has been no more than a
bumbling mess for the past few months. Republican front runner and celebrity, Donald Trump, has led
his campaign with racist remarks and the promise of a wall he will not pay for, to separate borders.
While the popular vote of the Democratic Party, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of who have brought what success this land has, to be what it is today. Many of who would be
looking at us in disappointment. The sole purpose of a leader is to lead their people to a better future.
Looking at this year s election has given the impression that our only concern for American is
entertainment and personal profit. Shields uses the line, Our culture has devalued individual sacrifice
for the common good, in his article and it is true. The look on the American appeal for the common
good has been distorted and is now a blur that we look past. Another problem that we are facing is the
fact that we are all under the influence. All of the big voices that we are listening to are trying to
impose their opinions and outlooks into being our own. They are trying to use their opinion to quiet
ours. Politics brims with examples of one side s efforts to impose its ethical values on the other,
Another line from Shields article. Throughout America s history there have been brilliant voices,
Martin Luther King Jr., Franklin Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, and many more. Though that is entire
difference between them and the voices today. They were brilliant. That is not to say that the
candidates today are not intelligent. The difference between brilliant and intelligent is that one
outshines the other. These men were not in power for the power, they were in power for the people.
This is an idea that is forgotten in today s

What Does My Life Mean To Me Essay
I picture myself living a life in which I have no worries or financial concerns; a life where I can travel
all around the world and meet new people each and every day of the week. A life such as this is one
that I have dreamed for since the days of my childhood, this new life will provide me with financial
stability, new opportunities, and the chance to explore the world around me. It is on this very day that
I hope to accomplish this dream, I can only hope and pray that this one chance I am given will give
me redemption and allow me to make peace with myself. My journey takes me back to my childhood
days in Mexico, I had very little in life due to my family s financial troubles, and the vast majority of
my childhood was consequently ruined. Numerous times I would think to myself that I would never be

President Abraham Lincoln and Walt Whitman
President Abraham Lincoln, admired by Walt Whitman, blossomed in Whitman s writing and in
American mythology (Eiselein) for his leadership and nobility. Whitman hoped for a rugged, healthy,
who knew what real, physical work was, to be the [r]edeemer [p]resident of [t]hese [s]tates
(Whitman). His hopes came true as in a dream (Whitman) when four years later, just such a beard
faced boatman (Goodheart) entered the White House. Walt Whitman discovered the comprehensive,
all directing soul he had long been seeking (Reynolds) in Abraham Lincoln s life. Therefore Whitman,
a patriotic American, would see Lincoln s death as not only a grave tragedy but also a promise [of]
ultimate purgation and unification for America. (Reynolds).
Dedicating countless hours to the war and politics before President Lincoln s death, Whitman strained
to restore the Union as a whole. Feeling obligated to participate in the war effort, Whitman secured a
government position making regular visit[s] [to] soldiers in war hospitals (Constantkis). Whitman also
participated in the Free Soil Party, a rising opposition to the progression and spread of slavery, and
wrote political commentaries in his effort to strengthen the Union. These undertakings not only aided
the Union, but also brought Whitman closer to his idol, Lincoln, who also wanted to preserve the
Union. Devastated by the assassination of President Lincoln, Walt Whitman wrote O Captain! My
Captain!, This Dust Was Once the Man, and

The Treatment Of A Patient
When a patient is no longer or unable to feed themselves orally a feeding tube must be ordered.
Specifically, when a patient has prolonged bleeding, facial trauma, upper GI blockage and cancer. An
enteral tube feeding can be placed nasally for a short period of time. The NG tube catheter tip
normally resides inside the stomach or in the small intestine past the pylorus. The number one
complication involved with the use of NG tube feeding is incorrect placement. A nurse can
unintentionally place an NG catheter into the lungs, most notably when a patient has little to no gag
reflex. Completing a test for gastric contents, pH or performing a chest x ray after inserting an NG
tube for confirmation of proper insertion. Another major complication when using NG tubal feeding is
aspiration within the lungs due to gastric substances enter the trachea and into the bronchial spaces of
the lungs. Keeping the head of the bed elevated greater than 30 degrees will reduce aspiration to least
possibility. Applying a gastrostomy or jejunostomy tube for enteral feedings when NG tube has
interference with therapy or ensues intolerance. The gastrostomy tube, PEG, tip situated in the
stomach and exits the body through the left upper quadrant of the abdomen where a bumper holds it
into location. Internally positioned by a doctor during an endoscopy, radiology or surgery. A

The Demand Theory And Theories Of Corruption
Theories of corruption generally fall under two classifications i.e. demand theories and supply
theories. Demand theory models of corruption include two approaches: resource allocation models and
the principal agent relationship models (Jain, 1998). Resource allocation models evaluate the costs of
the allocation of resources to bribe seeking activities. The model is based on the principle that bribe
seeking is one aspect of any economic activity and thus part of a firm s resources are devoted to this
pursuit (Krueger, 1974). In a competitive system, bribe seeking chances are produced either by agents
over government policy or by underlying societal features (Mauro, 1995).
Principal agent models of corruption postulate that the misuse of power by individuals/organisations,
which is driven by self interest (Shleifer Vishniv, 1993). The fundamental dilemma comes from that
agents are entrusted with authority on behalf on the principal (citizens). In a democratic state, the

Corruption is discussed in fields as diverse as economics, political science, anthropology, sociology,
history, organization studies, international business, business ethics, psychology, and philosophy.
According to Caiden (2001, 19), anthropologists found that public officials were distinguished from
the rest of the population for their unique role in providing services and goods to the rest of the
population. These public officials are expected to possess professional integrity, and consequently
uphold the public interest. Therefore, the public officials also contribute to good governance.
Corruption is barely a problem that is exclusive to developing countries (Klitgaard, 1998:3).
Additionally, according to various researches, (Transparency International, 2011 and Kligaard 1998)
corruption is mostly rampart in Africa.

Horse Creative Writing
I walked past stalls of horses to a new off track thoroughbred named
Damien serenely peering into the aisle. My trainer had asked me to ride him. As I picked his hooves
and curried his chestnut flanks, he was as tranquil as autumn leaves in a gentle breeze until he saw the
saddle, then he became a tornado whirling around the center of the stall.
I lead him by leather reins to the outdoor ring where my trainer would see him work for the first time.
He trotted circles around me and spooked at the wind. I returned to the barn and let him run and buck
so he could burn off extra energy. When I heard my trainer s golf cart stop in front of the barn, I
caught him and prepared to mount. My trainer arrived and held his bridle while I put my foot in the
stirrup. When foot made contact with iron, the horse bolted. He spun himself in circles around my
trainer while I balanced half on, half off struggling to find the saddle and my balance. As soon as I
was seated, the horse was loose. I gathered my reins and sat as calmly as I could. Suddenly, he bucked
and threw me forward. As I fell onto his neck, he continued bucking. My trainer yelled, Sit up! Pick

Summary Of The Rich Brother By Tobias Wolff
In the short story The Rich Brother, Tobias Wolff presents two brother who seem as polar opposites.
One brother is wealthy and successful while the other brother is poor and alone. With the many
examples of how Donald is reliant on Pete, it seems Pete in no way needs Donald. However,
throughout the story Tobias Wolff illustrates that even though Donald and Pete are brothers who are
completely different from one another, both depend highly on each other.
In the short story, Donald s reliance on Pete is more obvious than Pete s reliance on Donald. Pete is
more successful than Donald; Pete has family, friends, and wealth. While Donald at first glance has
nothing. Donald relies on his brother to pull him out of tough predicaments. Pete pays ... Show more

However, Pete s need for his brother is not as recognizable as Donald s need for Pete. In the story, Pete
has an addiction to the superficial, materialistic things life has to offer. When questioned what Pete
dreams about he says, Sex and money. Mostly money. A nightmare is when I dream I don t have any.
Even with the prosperity Pete has he is still not satisfied with riches he has; forcing him to seek after
other sources of pleasure, such as skydiving. Pete relies on Donald to show him the true meaning of
life. Donald focuses his life on relationships, religion, and helping others, things that disgusts Pete.
Pete s dependency on Donald is symbolised through Pete s dream: There was something wrong with
me, and you were helping out. Taking care of me. Just the two of us. I don t know where everyone else
was supposed to be. Pete left it at that. He didn t tell tell Donald that in this dream he was blind. The
dream symbolises Pete s blindness to the meaning in life. Donald shows Pete the meaning to life,
something Pete is blind to. Without Donald, Pete would be unable to find true happiness in life as he
would continuously search for the superficial, temporal things life

LDCT Screening
According to recent studies at Indiana Universty School of Medicine, alternative methods for
detecting non small cell lung cancer are emerging. The current methods of detecting NSCLC may be
effective, but they are also very expensive. One method called a low dose computed tomography
(LDCT) has been successful in identifying malignant tumors. However, routine LDCT screenings
would result in 1.3 to 2 billion dollars nationally in health care costs annually. Deig, Mendonca, and
Lautenschlaeger suggest that pursuing other methods of screening for NSCLC would significantly
decrease this cost. If screenings could be conducted in a cost efficient and effective manner, then the
expensive LDCT procedure would only have to be conducted for patients who ... Show more content

Biomarkers are natural indicators in the body that respond noticeably to the presence of disease. By
measuring the responses of biomarkers, oncologists detect the cancerous cells before recommending
expensive procedures, rather than immediately resorting to these procedures. One of these biomarkers
that responds to the presence of cancerous cells is microRNA. MicroRNAs are molecules that are
involved in the cell life cycle and therefore the progression of cancerous cells. A study in cancer
patients was conducted to compare the accuracy of screening with microRNAs to screening with
LDCT. Observing microRNAs did not prove to be as accurate at identifying cancer as LDCT, but
since using microRNAs is a less expensive process, it can identify patients that should undergo LCDT
testing. Screening with microRNA testing initially would decrease the number of patients paying for
LCDT testing. Another biomarker that can be observed in response to cancer is ct DNA. Ct DNA
refers to fragments of DNA from tumors found circulating in the blood stream. A recent study
indicated that observing ct DNA could have multiple useful applications for oncologists. Ct DNA
analysis during treatment could serve as an indication of how tumors react to treatment methods and
whether recurrence is likely. Detecting ct DNA in the bloodstream could even serve as an early sign of
cancer, observable before imaging tests even show tumors. However, ct DNA analysis has not yet
proved to be a replacement for LDCT

What It Means To Wood Privacy Fence
Wood privacy fences are an important component of a house especially one in the urban community. A
well chosen and appropriately designed fence affords homeowners the pleasure of enjoying their
private space without necessarily giving the impression of being an unfriendly neighbor. You don t
even have to fence the entire perimeter of the house. In some cases, even just short sections of fencing
in your property can already give you a semblance of solitude and discourage curious onlookers.
Keeping in mind the style and landscaping design of one s area, there are many fencing options to
choose from. Wood privacy fences make for some of the best privacy fences and come in a variety of
styles and materials. Vinyl fencing is also a suitable and cheaper alternative, or you can opt for a more
natural look with the use of greens shrubs and trees.

Pros And Cons Of Illegal Immigrants
In America, there is a saying of you scratch my back, and I ll scratch yours. However, what about
other countries? Specifically, those who seek sanctuary and asylum from the terrors of their own
country? Who will scratch their back? Will we? Most Americans have a rational fear of outsiders who
enter the country; particularly those who enter the country illegally. A shortage of jobs, scarcity of
housing, and rises in crime are a few of the many fears that Americans have concerning illegal
immigrants; however, with the help of the Mutual Friends Program (MFP), those fears can soon be a
thing of the past. Immigrants can have a place to stay, work, and gain citizenship all at the same time
at any MFP center. This program is sure to help immigrants and U.S. citizens alike. Firstly, Mutual
Friends Program (MFP) provides immigrants with a place to live. An MFP Center will be in major
cities all over the United States to insure the best location for comfortability for MFP members. At an
MFP Center, a hotel like residency is available to members of the program. MFP members have food
served to them in the café which alternate with the time of day (i.e. breakfast, lunch, dinner, and

Anthrax Pathogenesis
Anthrax is a deadly disease which can infect millions with the release of one biological weapon or the
melting of decades old permafrost. Anthrax disease is caused by the pathogen Bacillus Anthracis,
which is a bacteria that spreads through the way of spores. Unlike many infectious diseases Anthrax
does not spread from person to person, however, it can be spread widely through the release and
exposure to spores ( Anthrax Communicable Disease Control and Prevention, San Francisco
Department of Public Health , 2016). The structure of the spores can be seen in figure 2( The
pathogenesis of Bacillus anthracis MicrobeWiki , 2016). If infected anthrax can be a life threating

Critical Analysis Of Trifles
Trifles, by Susan K. Glaspell, is a play written in 1917 when the need for women s rights was sought.
Throughout the years, many productions of the play have taken place, as the story is famous for it s
strong opinion on the treatment of women, however many directors take what they can from the story
to give their interpretation of the characters, setting, and the plot. A video production of A Jury of Her
Peers, directed by Sally Heckel, will be different than an audio production of the same play, directed
Martin Jenkins, even if they stick to the same dialogue. For example, the bird scene, although with the
same lines and characters, can have different undertones depending on how the characters stress their
words, the pauses between sentences, their subtlety or their blatantly when in action, and even the
emotion expressed on the characters face. However, how can you see these emotions through just an
audio of the play? How can you feel the tension in the air, the pained expression on the character s
face, or their tight lipped remarks? The audio production due to it s lack of visual representation has to
compensate with fervid voice action and controlled background noises. Due to this, Ms.Peter sounds
sophisticated and appeared to sound pleased when finding the birdcage in Mrs.Wright s kitchen. When
addressing the birdcage, Ms.Peters and Ms.Hale talk fast paced, this causes their conversation to
sound whole like they know what they re talking about. Throughout the scene the emotions that they
portray are watery; my only explanation is that there is no heaviness or intensity of the truth of
birdcage, they have no build up of the plot as if the presence of the birdcage is a small matter but not
the initial cause of Ms.Wright s trouble. However, when Ms.hale describes Ms.Wright the tone
changes to a serious note The video production, on the other hand, brings the scene to life. They
perfectly portray the house as stuffy, small, and worn down just how a house on a farm would actually
look like. The conversation between the town characters are perfectly constructed, with Ms.Peters and
her soft concerned face to Ms.Hale and her weary, worn out personality. Ms.Hale sounds sorrowful in
the home since she was

Presidential Election Advantages
I believe that the US Presidential election should deserve all the media attention it is receiving because
the USA is one of the strongest world economies and will have a massive influence on other country s
economies. The US politics are known to be very complex. Even though we re inundated with the
media coverage of this election, it can still be difficult to figure out what exactly is happening. In 2014
it was stated that more and more americans are using cell phones to follow political news with 28
percent of registered voters. In other words, people are following election news and development in

My Final Moments As A Chelsea High School Cheerleader
It was my final moments as a Chelsea High School cheerleader. My final banquet had quickly
approached. It was then that I realized I was not ready for the season to be over. I stood in front of my
friends, fellow cheerleaders, and their families as they watched and waited for me to recite my last
words as the season came to an end. It took hours for me to write about what my teammates and my
coaches meant to me. I did not want to sound too nostalgic since I m not the emotional type, but I also
did not want to come across as indifferent. It was a difficult task, but I knew I could accomplish it.
A week before the banquet, the senior cheerleaders received the task of writing speeches about our

I was the fifth senior in line to read my speech. Thankfully, this gave me time to relax for the moment.
However, as I patiently waited my turn, my heart started to pound. My heart was beating so rapidly
that I was sure the girls next to me could hear it just as vividly as I could.
My parents were there to support me like always, and for that I am thankful. Seeing my parents in the
crowd has always been very soothing, especially in stressful situations such as this. My parents and I
have always been outwardly enthusiastic with each other no matter where we are. Whether at a
football game while I cheer on the sidelines or at a banquet where I receive an award, every time they
catch my eye, they throw their hands up in the air and begin to wave frantically until I wave back.
There were only two girls left in front of me. One stuttered as she tried to finish her speech, and the
other swayed back and forth unable to keep still. It was at that time that I looked into the crowd and
just as I had anticipated, I spotted my parents. As expected, they waved their arms wildly to catch my
attention. I smiled and waved back though my wave was much smaller than theirs, as I was doing my
best not to draw attention to myself. For a moment, I was at ease because of their presence. But just as

German Immigration To The United States And Their...
In the United States of North America ethnic groups are easily found everywhere. As a result, the
American culture is a combination of many other cultures such as Irish, Latin, African, British, etc.
However, one of the most significant of these is the German culture. German influence over this
country is so strong that it goes through science, to architecture, to music, to sports and entertainment.
Germans left their homeland for several reasons such as, looking for an improved standard of living,
and later looking for freedom from military connection and political oppression (1796 1815), etc. It is
possible to say that Germans have been present in America since the United States belonged to Great
Britain.

However, the revolutions failed and resulted in even stricter regulations being placed upon the people.
(German Immigration, 1999) In order to avoid dictatorial governments, many people fled Europe and;
consequently, America was a good option for them.
Germans, as many other ethnic groups, where willing to arrive in the promised land at any price,
which can be noticed in what they had to do to come here. Eltis notes that since the voyage was long,
difficult, and expensive, indentured servitude [...] allowed emigrants in effect to charge the price of the
transatlantic fare until after their arrival in America. (2002) At the time, it was pretty common that
immigrant groups were bound to their ethnic lines; for example, German immigrants were bound
mostly to German American masters. In effect, German colonists financed the surge of German
immigration families and single young men, Merchant with interests in developing the shipping of
immigrants across the Atlantic into profitable business introduced the innovative adaptation of
indentured servitude a strategy which depended in large part on the willingness of German settlers to
invest in the future labor of kin and former neighbors. (Eltis, 2002)

Emergence Of A Global Trading Arena
Introduction
Emergence of revolution in the world led to globalization. Hitherto, people gain from massive and
healthy business trade across the borders (Lucas, 367). In this case, one country is able to gain from
selling or buying of goods. Moreover, countries realized the importance of creating a global trading
arena to encourage the produces from all economies through integration. In this regard, people
enjoyed from some exemptions that interfered with flow of goods and service across borders. Despite
the vast advantage that parties enjoy in this kind of trade, they face various hurdles, which demoralize
them as they perform their business transactions. For instance, changes in the economic status in one
of the countries result in reduction in value of goods. Likewise, some traders may suffer due to high
rates of taxation in the bordering countries.
Understanding the concept of cross border shopping
The presence of competition in the indirect tax within the export and import zones leads to the
creation of horizontal tax externalities. Vertical tax externalities may also arise between the central and
regional government. In most of the cases, both countries tend to maximize revenue through tax
collection through purchasing and selling of goods. One party may therefore set policies that aim at in
increasing tax collection (Lucas 369; Ballard and Lee 720). Besides, an understanding cultivates from
their works that the government may also balance the availability of

The initial colonies were very unified both religiously and politically. There was little variance and a
strong sense of identity.
The continued influx of colonizers would fall to a trickle of only a hundred or so per year after the
English Civil War in 1642 and remain subdued until the American Revolution (Reader s Companion
to American History). The colonies which were formed after the English Civil War were much more
diverse in their makeup than were the initial Puritan colonies. These colonies formed over a longer
period of time and their populations were composed of people who had left England for a varying
degree of reasons. In addition, rather than being composed of immigrants from one primary area in
England, the English colonists were more geographically diverse as well.
The English had limited dealings with the Natives of the areas they colonized, preferring to operate
their colonies as autonomously as possible, depending more on interaction with the respective mother
countries than with the Native Americans (Foner and Garraty). England would become, arguably, the
most successful of the northern European countries that colonized, eventually extending their range all
the way into the interior of the new continent (Foner and Garraty).

Americans, they were interested in their

The Media s Role Of A Democratic Nation
The news media is an important aspect of a democratic nation, as one of their roles is to be a voice of
the public to mediate between the public and the government. Anderson (2007) asserts that the
normative roles of the news media in a democratic society are to undertake the role of the fourth
estate, act as a watchdog, and when necessary, as a counterbalance to those in society who abuse their
power. In other words, the media s function in society is critical to ensuring a balanced governance
and providing reliable information to the public. It is the primary institution within which the public

They are also expected to report news that informs, engages and educates the public on issues that
affect them, news that is independent of vested interest (Mcquail, 1994). Most of the ethical codes as
stated above, concentrate on providing reliable information to the public as well as avoiding bias and
sensationalism in the news.
On the other hand, Atton (2003) describes alternative media as a critical means to challenge the
standardised and professionalised practices of mainstream media. It is guided by a purpose other than
profit, unlike mainstream media which is often structured to promote consumption of the products it
advertises (Skinner, 2009). Alternative media does not claim to be objective. It does not consider itself
bound by the conventions of journalism. It sees itself as providing a platform for everyone to voice
their opinions (i.e. a platform for horizontal communication) (Hackett Zhao, 2002). What I found
through my research is that mainstream media does not always follow its role of maintaining ideal
journalistic standards. It more often focuses on reporting sensational news for entertainment
commercial purposes, rather than news that intellectually informs, engages and educates the public.
Mehrotra (2011) defines media sensationalism as the style of reporting news to the public which
involves use of fear, anger, excitement and crude thrill undertaken by the media to increase the

The European Union Promote Unity And Equality Amongst The...
The European Union aims to promote unity and equality amongst the fellow member states. In order
to provide this sense of concord the European Union allows free movement of citizens apart of the
union. The access to all members states solidifies a bond of the union but this free movement also
allows for negative issues to arise. Due to the free movement amongst the EU many people are easily
trafficked throughout the countries. The concept of this free movement is great for the people, but also
many people are suffering from a violation of their human rights. The EU aims to continue to support
free movement of their people, but they must focus on ways to prevent human trafficking from
occurring throughout the member states. Free movement of EU citizens was a major priority to pursue
with the start of this union. The idea of identifying a status for individuals benefiting from the process
of European integration and its correlative label of citizen of the Community or of the Union goes
back to the early 1970s (Condinanzi, Lang, Nascimbene, 1). The Paris Summit was the initiation of
the idea of unifying individuals to be labeled as citizens of the Union. Later, in 1992 the idea was
finally put into effect with the Maastricht Treaty. This treaty help to progress the integration of
Europeans and led to the formal recognition of the notion of European citizenship. Obtaining
citizenship in the EU is based on the national standard of the member state you reside in. The

How Doyle Create Suspense In The Hound Of The Baskervilles
Fabricated from the essence of his thoughts, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle revolutionized the mystery
genre, as we know it, in his stunning novel, The Hound of the Baskervilles. When read, Doyle s
readers embark on a journey to the filthy, crime filled streets of Victorian London and the mysterious
moor of the Baskervilles where unknown entities lurk. But most of all, readers come face to face with
the man himself, the greatest detective of all time, Mr. Sherlock Holmes. Since it first came out, Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle s world renown mystery, The Hound of the Baskervilles, has not failed to delight
mystery readers. In fact, readers have enjoyed the novel so much that it has become multiple movies.
However, David Attwood s film stands out from the others ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

As an author, it is typically harder to create suspense, but Doyle does an excellent job. With the use of
red herrings, superstition, cliffhangers, and more, Doyle creates an atmosphere of tension and
suspense. An example of one of these techniques is seen through the red herring: Selden. As soon as
the word got out that Selden had broken out of jail, he was easily taken as a suspect to readers.
However, In the movie, Selden causes more suspense by breaking into Baskerville Hall to get some
food. Another example of Doyle creating suspense in the novel was through the cliffhanger: the man
on the tor. Doyle creates suspense through this by leaving the readers wondering who was it that
Watson saw on the tor. Although Doyle creates suspense pretty well, Attwood creates even more. One
major asset that Attwood has is sound effects and noise. This is extremely efficient because Attwood
can make the things that Doyle does even better. For example, when the scene about Selden escaping
happens, sound effects such as sirens and yelling, make his escape more suspenseful. In the same way,
Attwood uses sound effects for things such as the howling of the hound on the moor, or the screaming
of victims. Although Attwood creates a lot of suspense through sound effects, I m sure that both Doyle
and Attwood would agree that maybe the most effective way of creating suspense is through character
actions and nature. In both the movie and the novel, in the resolution, a wave of fog appears before the
hound arrives. In the novel, Holmes even says, the one thing upon earth which could have disarranged
my plans.... Our success and even his life may depend upon his coming out before the fog is over the
path. (218) In this moment, the readers wait for the beast to strike as Doyle takes away their breath.
This clearly creates suspension and tension in both

but as you can see, he soon fell in love with her and married her. A passage from the book explains
how Chips and Kathies relationship went: And Kathie widened and broadened his views and opinions,
giving him an outlook far beyond the roofs of Brooksfield... She had a cleverer brain than his, and he
could not confuse her ideas even if and when he disagreed with them; he remained, for instance, a
conserative in politics, despite all her radical socialistic talk. But even where he did not except, he
absorbed. His passage shows who Chips really is, he is a man who likes his old ways, but is open
minded to other ideas and is not to stubborn to change his mind if he is wrong about something.
However, when he knows he s right, he still listens to the other.
I m sure Ralston just thought Chips was an old man who despised change and wanted everything to
stay the same. However, Chips was a man who was open minded and willing to make changes if he

The Mall Of New Jersey
This first time I remember walking through the mall in New Jersey I was a little girl holding my

end. The elongated brown brick walls made me feel like I am walking into a dungeon, into the land of

it was too far and second we had a downtown to shop. While I was away at school they remodeled the
mall and expanded the space into a mega palace to include four levels of bright lights, white walls,
shining floors, glass elevator and a skylight. The mall added a movie theater, bookstore, hair salons,
restaurants, food court, computer stores, post office, and fitness center, just to name a few minor
changes. I was speechless, walking around the same mall as I did as a child with amazing like Charlie

Managing people as the term implies is not an easy task. There are a number of problems that arises

In many European countries the law requires that trade unions be recognised for collective bargaining
purposes. In Europe more than seven out of every ten organisations with more than 200 employees
formally recognise trade unions (Morley et al 1996). The practice of EI (Employee Involvement) is
wide spread in Europe. The European Union is seeking a harmonisation of employee representative

Difference in Culture:
The term culture is defined by a number of authors. Shankar (2003) has defined culture as complex
and interrelated set of elements, comprising knowledge, beliefs and values, arts, laws, and habits
acquired by a human as a member of a particular society. These act together to distinguish one group
from another. Culture determines the identity of a human group in the same way as personality
determines the identity of an individual (Hofstede, 1984). Further he always defined culture as the
collective programming of the mind which distinguishes the members of one human group from
another. In order to compare the cultures of different organisations Gerant Hofstede discovered five
dimensions which he found universally present in different nations and organisations. They are Power

Technology in Ancient Rome and Egypt
Technology application of antiquity was so advanced in some areas that only in the last several
centuries has modern technology overtaken what existed several millennia ago . The massive building
projects of the Giza Plateau and throughout Egypt required heavy lifting and precision surveying
technology that did not exist even 100 years ago . The military equipment of ancient Rome, such as
artillery machinery, was still state of the art 200 years ago . Neither Rome nor Egypt invented much
new technology , but rather applied existing technology in new ways. Application of technology

Romans solved this by applying Persian aqueduct technology . Technology spread throughout the
military, right down to simple but highly effective Celtic sourced chainmail body armor that protected
the lowly foot soldier. Rome s military technology allowed the empire to grow and sustain. The rise of
Rome was accomplished through military means, where ...each new conquest became vulnerable and
led to further expansion. This objective was first above anything else. Without the military strength to
establish and spread the empire, no other artistic, architectural, domestic, or other cultural innovation
could take place . This state priority was for survival because without relentless enhancements to labor
resources, military methods, and technology, Rome would fall. In fact, Rome nearly fell, and in 31
BC, Octavian established a military dictatorship, called the Principate . The military campaigns
provided the raw material to make the military even stronger labor and new ideas and technology.
The intellect of newly conquered countries brought with them new ideas and new technology. For
example, even the one technology of glass blowing the Empire invented, no Roman ever invented it,
for it seems to have developed in present day Syria. The pace at which technology was applied in the
military quickened because the new ideas

Aztec Religion
The Aztecs served a strange religion. After, a while it took their gods five times to make the world. To
illisterate this, it took five tries cause the gods were fighting each other. Most of the Aztec gods died
during their wars.Next a god named Quetzalcoati made people. He made people out of older bones and
his own blood. Now, that he did this the gods needed blood by sacrifice. So they took prisoners for
sacrifice.they were especially scared of nature. The Aztecs were scared that in every fifty two years the
world end.By the way they thought there death would effect their after life. Also, the Aztecs thought

Essay On Legalizing Medical Marijuana
Legalization of Medical Marijuana The controversy on the topic is that Americans link marijuana to
uneducated, unemployed, and lazy individuals who deal with addiction. Though there are valid points
for the legalization of the drug, there is a worry about how the drug will affect the users. Although
opponents say that legalizing medical marijuana is a back door method of legalizing the drug for
recreational use, the U.S. should legalize medical marijuana because it will reduce crime, increase
revenue, provide more research, and will help treat numerous medical conditions. Many people think
that if marijuana is legalized, there will be an onslaught of crime. (Delmore) Studies have shown that
the legalization of marijuana has truly reduced the crime rate. Robert Morris, an associate professor of
criminology at UT Dallas, said, After controlling for a host of known factors related to changes in
crime rates we accounted for factors such as poverty, employment, education, even per capita beer
sales, among other things we found no evidence of increases in any of these crimes for states after
legalizing marijuana for medical use (Ferner). He goes on to say that the studies show that homicides
and assaults have decreased because of the legalization. The National Academy of Sciences found that

there will be possibility for finding a cure for cancer. The further research will create a cure using the

Relativity Of Truth In Life Of Pi
Life of Pi: The Relativity of Truth
The relativity of truth refers to truth relativism, which is the doctrine that there are no absolute truths.
The truth is always relative to some particular frame of reference. An example of truth relativism is
the The Dress trend which went viral because viewers disagreed over whether the colors of the dress
were black and blue or gold and white. Because of how a human perceives the color, it could be either
of these colors based on how a person sees it. The relativity of truth in the Life of Pi includes and
refers to the Blind Frenchman , the algae island, and which story Pi told the interviewers was true.
To begin, when Pi went blind in chapter 90 and practically gave up on surviving, he heard a voice. It s
astonishing what you hear when you re alone in the blackness of your dying mind. (Martel, Pg 242).
To people, this could refer to Pi hearing an actual person or it could just be a figment of his
imagination. Misery loves company, and madness calls it forth. (Martel, Pg 242). This adds to the
theory that the voice Pi heard was just a figment of his imagination. Further on in the novel, Pi meets
and speaks to the Blind Frenchman after figuring out that it wasn t Richard Parker he was talking to.
Later on, Richard Parker killed the Frenchman and Pi explored his boat, finding out that the
Frenchman had lied to him about having food. What doesn t add up is that Pi regained his eyesight
two days after the Frenchman s murder and when he went to check out the dead man s boat, he was
still blind. This could mean that Pi didn t actually go on the Frenchman s boat but was actually
exploring his boat and that the man was a figment of his imagination to suppress the loneliness Pi was
feeling.
Furthermore, in chapter 92, Pi discovers an algae island with food to eat and land to settle on. Pi stated
...that the island was not an island in the conventional sense of the term that is, a small landmass
rooted to the floor of the ocean but was rather a free floating organism... (Martel, Pg 271 272). One
could assume that this wasn t an actual island, but something that Pi made up to add depth to the story
he was telling or this was an island that has never been

Echo And Narcissus Analysis
Comparing Tragedies: Echo vs. Narcissus
Ovid displays an impressive grasp of language in his poem Narcissus and Echo which allows him to
address many classic themes, the chief of these being the theme of unfulfilled love and the suffering it
brings. The most notable instances of this type of suffering are Echo and Narcissus transformations;
Echo withers away until she is naught but a voice, and Narcissus is trapped in place until he eventually
transforms into a flower. Upon finishing this tale, the reader is left with much to consider, including
the question: which fate is worse? Of course, both fates are certainly cruel, but they given the specific
themes and diction that Ovid uses when describing each pseudo death, Echo s punishment seems far
less dehumanizing than Narcisssus ; whereas Narcissus is completely objectified by his transformation
into a beautiful flower, Echo at least maintains the power of voice.
Given Ovid s diction during Echo s introduction, it is clear that her fate is directly tied to the power of
speech and voice. Ovid calls her resounding Echo as if this is her title, and the use of the word
resounding is very important (line 26). Why not call her loud or huge or any of the other synonyms
tied to the word resounding ? One can only assume that Ovid wanted to make use of the word s other
definition: resonant and reverberant. By essentially introducing her as Reverberant Echo and
mentioning that her speech was strange , Ovid immediately alerts the reader to what is both Echo s
downfall and her saving grace: Words have power. Echo over uses words in her favor when she d talk
and talk,/ to give her sister nymphs just enough/ time to slip away before they were found out, by Juno
(lines 38 40), and eventually, her speech turns on her when she is able to do little more than repeat
Narcissus words back to him despite how much she wishes to sing his praises. In the end, however,
Echo s final punishment is to become no more than a voice, no more than a literal echo. Surely, this
fate is cruel, but perhaps it is not completely unforgiving; though it is very little consolation, Echo at
least maintains the power of voice, and however diluted this power might be, Ovid writes,

The Rayleigh-Bénard Problem
Mechanics of Fluids and the
Rayleigh Bénard Problem 1 Introduction
The motion of fluids in certain systems continues to be a relevant to physicists. From the coiling of
dribbling fluids to the convection current of a slice of fluid heated from below, patterns forming in
natural systems are still unsolved. The best that can be done is to make models of the systems and use
approximations.
In this paper I will give an overview of the Rayleigh Bénard problem as well as describe the
derivation of a four mode lorenz model and a linear stability analysis of the hydrodynamic equations
to find the critical Rayleigh number responsible for predicting convection in a system.
2 Basic Fluid Dynamics
2.1 What is a fluid?
A fluid is a substance that will deform (flow) when a shear stress is applied. This is in contrast to a
solid, which will compress rather than continuously deform under such a stress. Fluids are a subset of
the phases of matter and include liquids (incompressible fluids), and gases (compressible fluids).
Shown in Figure 2.1.1 is of a slice of fluid between two plates undergoing a shear stress. The bottom
plate is stationary, while the top one is allowed to move. The fluid adjacent to the top plate will be
pulled along at about the same speed as the plate, but the layer of fluid below that resists the motion
just a bit and moves slower, same with the layer below that all the way to the layer next to the bottom
plate. Figure 2.1.1

The Global Perception of Beauty
Their faces are scattered across our billboards, their flawless figures mesmerize us at halftime of the
Superbowl; but at what cost? To the naked eye, the impact of cosmetic advertisement cannot be seen,
but magnified under the weight of social scrutiny and the self esteem of millions of women, the
significance is undeniable. The depiction of women through popular mass media outlets has a
tremendous influence upon global beauty culture, social construction and the personal self esteem of
individual women, worldwide. Society s dependence upon media constructs our perception of reality
on a daily basis, transforming the beauty culture on an international level, while the cosmetic industry
profits. On a global scale, only 2% of women ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Americanization also works to assimilate the rest of the world to perceive our standard of living
superior, but attainable. Just as foreign nations are encouraged to adopt a capitalistic approach in their
markets, foreign women are encouraged to adopt our definition of beauty. While American women
struggle to maintain a desired weight, foreign women struggle to exhibit American qualities (Derenne,
M.D., and Beresin, M.D.). Cosmo Magazine is an example of this trend exemplifying the fun, fearless
female around the world (see figure 4). Sold in 100 countries, in 34 languages, while reaching 60
million viewers; Cosmo has been described as a bible to beauty for its readers (see figure 5). Women
in India look to emulate the faces they see on the cover on Cosmo Magazine, as a result skin lightener
has emerged as one of the most produced cosmetic supplements, while struggling domestically. A vast
majority of the female population in India wishes to be two shades lighter, on average (see figure 3).
Foreign adaption and assimilation is a difficult process for American corporations to achieve,
worldwide, but a steady flow of consistent brand image and a unification of appeals allow for the
exploitation of social stigmas (Ssenyonga). Corporations confirm these stereotypes around the world,
at the expense of the individual self esteem of women; domestically and internationally. With a

Anatomy Reflection
What went wrong
As with other PA faculties, you may be aware of the general complaints made by the first year PA
students about the Anatomy course. I do know my classmates were affected different; however, these
were my own personal challenges with the Anatomy course:
Disorganization of course material o Class reading assignments did not match Lecture o Lecture
PowerPoints were not provided despite request from several students. It was usually provided a couple
of days before the test. This shortened the time to study, memorize and focus on the necessary
anatomical structures.
Lack of guidance on how to study the information presented
As recommended during the PA orientation, I read the assigned readings for my courses; however, for
anatomy, this exercise quickly became futile only because it did not contribute to helping to
understand lectures provided in class. With voluminous reading assignments, many times, the anatomy
lecture focused little or none from the information in the textbook. Lectures mostly presented
anatomical structures and so focus on images were paramount. Therefore, the reading did little to help
understand lecture material if one is not familiar enough with the anatomical structures. While this
was the case, the PowerPoints with the anatomical structures were not provided.
Insufficient consistent guidance in the Anatomy Cadaver lab
Initially there was no tutoring and/or review sessions for the lab. Many of us were confused and

  • 2. Tuscaloosa Business Environment In 2009, the Free the Hops bill passed in Alabama allowing the sale of beer with an ABV content higher than 6.0%. A nearly five year process provided Alabama with the opportunity to join 46 other states in the sale of high gravity craft beer. In 2012, Tuscaloosa s city council also voted to change the city s zoning ordinance which allowed for brewpubs and breweries. This series of law changes provided a culture change and sparked a flourishing craft beer scene in the city of Tuscaloosa. • 3. Immanuel Kant s Philosophy On Moral And Good And Evil... Moral philosophy is a branch of philosophy which focuses and investigates the ideas of right and wrong and good and evil behavior. Moral philosophers have researched and justified the logical consequences of moral or ethical beliefs. When we think of morals, we think of rules that tell us which actions are right and which are wrong. But, do human beings have the ability to judge for themselves, based on the facts of a situation, what is right and wrong, what they should do and not do? Well, according to Immanuel Kant, who is one of the most influential philosophers of all times, believes that human beings should not be making decisions based on the facts of a situation, but should act according to universal moral codes that apply in all situations regardless of the outcome. Kant refers to these universal moral codes as categorical imperatives and must be fully followed at all times across all circumstances. In his work, Groundwork of Metaphysic of Morals, Immanuel Kant talks about three formulations of imperative. The first formulation of imperative is Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law without contradiction. Kant believes that our actions should be the same in all situations, regardless of the outcome. Some acts are always wrong, even if the act leads to an admirable outcome. Kant believes that emotions and consequences should not play a role in moral action. We are morally obligated or have a duty ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Common Good Questions Final Exam America: Land of the free and home of the brave. That was the idea that the people had hundreds of years ago. How they would feel now that we are a country that is enslaved to profit and not the least bit brave when it comes to speaking truth. Mark Shield, author of the article Missing: Any Challenge for the Common Good, brings to the attention of how todays tactic of running things has become more than a little undermining. The presidential campaign of 2016 has been no more than a bumbling mess for the past few months. Republican front runner and celebrity, Donald Trump, has led his campaign with racist remarks and the promise of a wall he will not pay for, to separate borders. While the popular vote of the Democratic Party, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some of who have brought what success this land has, to be what it is today. Many of who would be looking at us in disappointment. The sole purpose of a leader is to lead their people to a better future. Looking at this year s election has given the impression that our only concern for American is entertainment and personal profit. Shields uses the line, Our culture has devalued individual sacrifice for the common good, in his article and it is true. The look on the American appeal for the common good has been distorted and is now a blur that we look past. Another problem that we are facing is the fact that we are all under the influence. All of the big voices that we are listening to are trying to impose their opinions and outlooks into being our own. They are trying to use their opinion to quiet ours. Politics brims with examples of one side s efforts to impose its ethical values on the other, Another line from Shields article. Throughout America s history there have been brilliant voices, Martin Luther King Jr., Franklin Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, and many more. Though that is entire difference between them and the voices today. They were brilliant. That is not to say that the candidates today are not intelligent. The difference between brilliant and intelligent is that one outshines the other. These men were not in power for the power, they were in power for the people. • 8. President Abraham Lincoln and Walt Whitman President Abraham Lincoln, admired by Walt Whitman, blossomed in Whitman s writing and in American mythology (Eiselein) for his leadership and nobility. Whitman hoped for a rugged, healthy, who knew what real, physical work was, to be the [r]edeemer [p]resident of [t]hese [s]tates (Whitman). His hopes came true as in a dream (Whitman) when four years later, just such a beard faced boatman (Goodheart) entered the White House. Walt Whitman discovered the comprehensive, all directing soul he had long been seeking (Reynolds) in Abraham Lincoln s life. Therefore Whitman, a patriotic American, would see Lincoln s death as not only a grave tragedy but also a promise [of] ultimate purgation and unification for America. (Reynolds). Dedicating countless hours to the war and politics before President Lincoln s death, Whitman strained to restore the Union as a whole. Feeling obligated to participate in the war effort, Whitman secured a government position making regular visit[s] [to] soldiers in war hospitals (Constantkis). Whitman also participated in the Free Soil Party, a rising opposition to the progression and spread of slavery, and wrote political commentaries in his effort to strengthen the Union. These undertakings not only aided the Union, but also brought Whitman closer to his idol, Lincoln, who also wanted to preserve the Union. Specifically, when a patient has prolonged bleeding, facial trauma, upper GI blockage and cancer. An enteral tube feeding can be placed nasally for a short period of time. The NG tube catheter tip normally resides inside the stomach or in the small intestine past the pylorus. The number one complication involved with the use of NG tube feeding is incorrect placement. • 13. The Demand Theory And Theories Of Corruption Theories of corruption generally fall under two classifications i.e. demand theories and supply theories. Demand theory models of corruption include two approaches: resource allocation models and the principal agent relationship models (Jain, 1998). Resource allocation models evaluate the costs of the allocation of resources to bribe seeking activities. The model is based on the principle that bribe seeking is one aspect of any economic activity and thus part of a firm s resources are devoted to this pursuit (Krueger, 1974). In a competitive system, bribe seeking chances are produced either by agents over government policy or by underlying societal features (Mauro, 1995). Principal agent models of corruption postulate that the misuse of power by individuals/organisations, which is driven by self interest (Shleifer Vishniv, 1993). The fundamental dilemma comes from that agents are entrusted with authority on behalf on the principal (citizens). In a democratic state, the elected officials and managers of ... As I picked his hooves and curried his chestnut flanks, he was as tranquil as autumn leaves in a gentle breeze until he saw the saddle, then he became a tornado whirling around the center of the stall. I lead him by leather reins to the outdoor ring where my trainer would see him work for the first time. He trotted circles around me and spooked at the wind. I returned to the barn and let him run and buck so he could burn off extra energy. When I heard my trainer s golf cart stop in front of the barn, I caught him and prepared to mount. My trainer arrived and held his bridle while I put my foot in the stirrup. When foot made contact with iron, the horse bolted. He spun himself in circles around my trainer while I balanced half on, half off struggling to find the saddle and my balance. As soon as I was seated, the horse was loose. I gathered my reins and sat as calmly as I could. Suddenly, he bucked and threw me forward. As I fell onto his neck, he continued bucking. My trainer yelled, Sit up! Pick his head up! However, throughout the story Tobias Wolff illustrates that even though Donald and Pete are brothers who are completely different from one another, both depend highly on each other. Even with the prosperity Pete has he is still not satisfied with riches he has; forcing him to seek after other sources of pleasure, such as skydiving. Pete relies on Donald to show him the true meaning of life. Donald focuses his life on relationships, religion, and helping others, things that disgusts Pete. Pete s dependency on Donald is symbolised through Pete s dream: There was something wrong with me, and you were helping out. Taking care of me. Just the two of us. • 17. LDCT Screening According to recent studies at Indiana Universty School of Medicine, alternative methods for detecting non small cell lung cancer are emerging. The current methods of detecting NSCLC may be effective, but they are also very expensive. One method called a low dose computed tomography (LDCT) has been successful in identifying malignant tumors. However, routine LDCT screenings would result in 1.3 to 2 billion dollars nationally in health care costs annually. Deig, Mendonca, and Lautenschlaeger suggest that pursuing other methods of screening for NSCLC would significantly decrease this cost. If screenings could be conducted in a cost efficient and effective manner, then the expensive LDCT procedure would only have to be conducted for patients who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Biomarkers are natural indicators in the body that respond noticeably to the presence of disease. By measuring the responses of biomarkers, oncologists detect the cancerous cells before recommending expensive procedures, rather than immediately resorting to these procedures. One of these biomarkers that responds to the presence of cancerous cells is microRNA. MicroRNAs are molecules that are involved in the cell life cycle and therefore the progression of cancerous cells. A study in cancer patients was conducted to compare the accuracy of screening with microRNAs to screening with LDCT. Observing microRNAs did not prove to be as accurate at identifying cancer as LDCT, but since using microRNAs is a less expensive process, it can identify patients that should undergo LCDT testing. Screening with microRNA testing initially would decrease the number of patients paying for LCDT testing. Another biomarker that can be observed in response to cancer is ct DNA. Ct DNA refers to fragments of DNA from tumors found circulating in the blood stream. A recent study indicated that observing ct DNA could have multiple useful applications for oncologists. Ct DNA analysis during treatment could serve as an indication of how tumors react to treatment methods and whether recurrence is likely. Detecting ct DNA in the bloodstream could even serve as an early sign of cancer, observable before imaging tests even show tumors. However, ct DNA analysis has not yet proved to be a replacement for LDCT ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A well chosen and appropriately designed fence affords homeowners the pleasure of enjoying their private space without necessarily giving the impression of being an unfriendly neighbor. • 23. Critical Analysis Of Trifles Trifles, by Susan K. Glaspell, is a play written in 1917 when the need for women s rights was sought. Throughout the years, many productions of the play have taken place, as the story is famous for it s strong opinion on the treatment of women, however many directors take what they can from the story to give their interpretation of the characters, setting, and the plot. A video production of A Jury of Her Peers, directed by Sally Heckel, will be different than an audio production of the same play, directed Martin Jenkins, even if they stick to the same dialogue. For example, the bird scene, although with the same lines and characters, can have different undertones depending on how the characters stress their words, the pauses between sentences, their subtlety or their blatantly when in action, and even the emotion expressed on the characters face. However, how can you see these emotions through just an audio of the play? How can you feel the tension in the air, the pained expression on the character s face, or their tight lipped remarks? The audio production due to it s lack of visual representation has to compensate with fervid voice action and controlled background noises. Due to this, Ms.Peter sounds sophisticated and appeared to sound pleased when finding the birdcage in Mrs.Wright s kitchen. When addressing the birdcage, Ms.Peters and Ms.Hale talk fast paced, this causes their conversation to sound whole like they know what they re talking about. Throughout the scene the emotions that they portray are watery; my only explanation is that there is no heaviness or intensity of the truth of birdcage, they have no build up of the plot as if the presence of the birdcage is a small matter but not the initial cause of Ms.Wright s trouble. However, when Ms.hale describes Ms.Wright the tone changes to a serious note The video production, on the other hand, brings the scene to life. They perfectly portray the house as stuffy, small, and worn down just how a house on a farm would actually look like. The conversation between the town characters are perfectly constructed, with Ms.Peters and her soft concerned face to Ms.Hale and her weary, worn out personality. Hitherto, people gain from massive and healthy business trade across the borders (Lucas, 367). In this case, one country is able to gain from selling or buying of goods. Moreover, countries realized the importance of creating a global trading arena to encourage the produces from all economies through integration. In this regard, people enjoyed from some exemptions that interfered with flow of goods and service across borders. Despite the vast advantage that parties enjoy in this kind of trade, they face various hurdles, which demoralize them as they perform their business transactions. For instance, changes in the economic status in one of the countries result in reduction in value of goods. Likewise, some traders may suffer due to high rates of taxation in the bordering countries. Understanding the concept of cross border shopping The presence of competition in the indirect tax within the export and import zones leads to the creation of horizontal tax externalities. Vertical tax externalities may also arise between the central and regional government. In most of the cases, both countries tend to maximize revenue through tax collection through purchasing and selling of goods. One party may therefore set policies that aim at in increasing tax collection (Lucas 369; Ballard and Lee 720). The colonies which were formed after the English Civil War were much more diverse in their makeup than were the initial Puritan colonies. These colonies formed over a longer period of time and their populations were composed of people who had left England for a varying degree of reasons. In order to provide this sense of concord the European Union allows free movement of citizens apart of the union. Due to the free movement amongst the EU many people are easily trafficked throughout the countries. As an author, it is typically harder to create suspense, but Doyle does an excellent job. With the use of red herrings, superstition, cliffhangers, and more, Doyle creates an atmosphere of tension and suspense. An example of one of these techniques is seen through the red herring: Selden. As soon as the word got out that Selden had broken out of jail, he was easily taken as a suspect to readers. However, In the movie, Selden causes more suspense by breaking into Baskerville Hall to get some food. Another example of Doyle creating suspense in the novel was through the cliffhanger: the man on the tor. Doyle creates suspense through this by leaving the readers wondering who was it that Watson saw on the tor. Although Doyle creates suspense pretty well, Attwood creates even more. One major asset that Attwood has is sound effects and noise. This is extremely efficient because Attwood can make the things that Doyle does even better. For example, when the scene about Selden escaping happens, sound effects such as sirens and yelling, make his escape more suspenseful. In the same way, Attwood uses sound effects for things such as the howling of the hound on the moor, or the screaming of victims. Although Attwood creates a lot of suspense through sound effects, I m sure that both Doyle and Attwood would agree that maybe the most effective way of creating suspense is through character actions and nature. In both the movie and the novel, in the resolution, a wave of fog appears before the hound arrives. In the novel, Holmes even says, the one thing upon earth which could have disarranged my plans.... The mall added a movie theater, bookstore, hair salons, restaurants, food court, computer stores, post office, and fitness center, just to name a few minor changes. I was speechless, walking around the same mall as I did as a child with amazing like Charlie in the Chocolate Factory. The mall played two major points in my life, the time I spent with my mother as a child trying on clothes wishing we could afford to buy and my job working in cosmetics saleswoman in a major department store. Contrasting Hr Approaches of Uk Usa Compare and contrast approaches to HRM within two diverse country contexts Introduction: Structures and peoples expectation differ a great deal from one country to another. (Harzing 2004). Managing people as the term implies is not an easy task. There are a number of problems that arises with regard to it. Each individual is different from the other in terms of conception of things and ways of doing the task allotted to him. Thus we can say that managing people in the same way in all the countries of the world is not possible. All the countries have different cultures, values, traditions, economic and political conditions and the management practices that are used in regard to managing people cannot be same. The EU legislation encourages the formation of European Work Council (EWCs) for organisation with subsidiaries located in different member states.(Henzing 2001). Difference in Culture: The term culture is defined by a number of authors. Shankar (2003) has defined culture as complex and interrelated set of elements, comprising knowledge, beliefs and values, arts, laws, and habits acquired by a human as a member of a particular society. These act together to distinguish one group from another. Culture determines the identity of a human group in the same way as personality determines the identity of an individual (Hofstede, 1984). Further he always defined culture as the collective programming of the mind which distinguishes the members of one human group from another. In order to compare the cultures of different organisations Gerant Hofstede discovered five dimensions which he found universally present in different nations and organisations. Technology in Ancient Rome and Egypt Technology application of antiquity was so advanced in some areas that only in the last several centuries has modern technology overtaken what existed several millennia ago . The massive building projects of the Giza Plateau and throughout Egypt required heavy lifting and precision surveying technology that did not exist even 100 years ago . The military equipment of ancient Rome, such as artillery machinery, was still state of the art 200 years ago . Neither Rome nor Egypt invented much new technology , but rather applied existing technology in new ways. This objective was first above anything else. Without the military strength to establish and spread the empire, no other artistic, architectural, domestic, or other cultural innovation could take place . This state priority was for survival because without relentless enhancements to labor resources, military methods, and technology, Rome would fall. In fact, Rome nearly fell, and in 31 BC, Octavian established a military dictatorship, called the Principate . The military campaigns provided the raw material to make the military even stronger labor and new ideas and technology. The intellect of newly conquered countries brought with them new ideas and new technology. Essay On Legalizing Medical Marijuana Legalization of Medical Marijuana The controversy on the topic is that Americans link marijuana to uneducated, unemployed, and lazy individuals who deal with addiction. Though there are valid points for the legalization of the drug, there is a worry about how the drug will affect the users. Although opponents say that legalizing medical marijuana is a back door method of legalizing the drug for recreational use, the U.S. should legalize medical marijuana because it will reduce crime, increase revenue, provide more research, and will help treat numerous medical conditions. Many people think that if marijuana is legalized, there will be an onslaught of crime. (Delmore) Studies have shown that the legalization of marijuana has truly reduced the crime rate. Robert Morris, an associate professor of criminology at UT Dallas, said, After controlling for a host of known factors related to changes in crime rates we accounted for factors such as poverty, employment, education, even per capita beer sales, among other things we found no evidence of increases in any of these crimes for states after legalizing marijuana for medical use (Ferner). • 44. Relativity Of Truth In Life Of Pi Life of Pi: The Relativity of Truth The relativity of truth refers to truth relativism, which is the doctrine that there are no absolute truths. The truth is always relative to some particular frame of reference. An example of truth relativism is the The Dress trend which went viral because viewers disagreed over whether the colors of the dress were black and blue or gold and white. Because of how a human perceives the color, it could be either of these colors based on how a person sees it. The relativity of truth in the Life of Pi includes and refers to the Blind Frenchman , the algae island, and which story Pi told the interviewers was true. To begin, when Pi went blind in chapter 90 and practically gave up on surviving, he heard a voice. It s astonishing what you hear when you re alone in the blackness of your dying mind. (Martel, Pg 242). To people, this could refer to Pi hearing an actual person or it could just be a figment of his imagination. Misery loves company, and madness calls it forth. (Martel, Pg 242). This adds to the theory that the voice Pi heard was just a figment of his imagination. Further on in the novel, Pi meets and speaks to the Blind Frenchman after figuring out that it wasn t Richard Parker he was talking to. Later on, Richard Parker killed the Frenchman and Pi explored his boat, finding out that the Frenchman had lied to him about having food. What doesn t add up is that Pi regained his eyesight two days after the Frenchman s murder and when he went to check out the dead man s boat, he was still blind. This could mean that Pi didn t actually go on the Frenchman s boat but was actually exploring his boat and that the man was a figment of his imagination to suppress the loneliness Pi was feeling. Furthermore, in chapter 92, Pi discovers an algae island with food to eat and land to settle on. Pi stated ...that the island was not an island in the conventional sense of the term that is, a small landmass rooted to the floor of the ocean but was rather a free floating organism... • 45. Echo And Narcissus Analysis Comparing Tragedies: Echo vs. Narcissus Ovid displays an impressive grasp of language in his poem Narcissus and Echo which allows him to address many classic themes, the chief of these being the theme of unfulfilled love and the suffering it brings. The most notable instances of this type of suffering are Echo and Narcissus transformations; Echo withers away until she is naught but a voice, and Narcissus is trapped in place until he eventually transforms into a flower. Upon finishing this tale, the reader is left with much to consider, including the question: which fate is worse? Of course, both fates are certainly cruel, but they given the specific themes and diction that Ovid uses when describing each pseudo death, Echo s punishment seems far less dehumanizing than Narcisssus ; whereas Narcissus is completely objectified by his transformation into a beautiful flower, Echo at least maintains the power of voice. Given Ovid s diction during Echo s introduction, it is clear that her fate is directly tied to the power of speech and voice. Ovid calls her resounding Echo as if this is her title, and the use of the word resounding is very important (line 26). Why not call her loud or huge or any of the other synonyms tied to the word resounding ? One can only assume that Ovid wanted to make use of the word s other definition: resonant and reverberant. By essentially introducing her as Reverberant Echo and mentioning that her speech was strange , Ovid immediately alerts the reader to what is both Echo s downfall and her saving grace: Words have power. Echo over uses words in her favor when she d talk and talk,/ to give her sister nymphs just enough/ time to slip away before they were found out, by Juno (lines 38 40), and eventually, her speech turns on her when she is able to do little more than repeat Narcissus words back to him despite how much she wishes to sing his praises. In the end, however, Echo s final punishment is to become no more than a voice, no more than a literal echo. Surely, this fate is cruel, but perhaps it is not completely unforgiving; though it is very little consolation, Echo at least maintains the power of voice, and however diluted this power might be, Ovid writes, ... • 46. The Rayleigh-Bénard Problem Mechanics of Fluids and the Rayleigh Bénard Problem 1 Introduction The motion of fluids in certain systems continues to be a relevant to physicists. From the coiling of dribbling fluids to the convection current of a slice of fluid heated from below, patterns forming in natural systems are still unsolved. The best that can be done is to make models of the systems and use approximations. In this paper I will give an overview of the Rayleigh Bénard problem as well as describe the derivation of a four mode lorenz model and a linear stability analysis of the hydrodynamic equations to find the critical Rayleigh number responsible for predicting convection in a system. 2 Basic Fluid Dynamics 2.1 What is a fluid? A fluid is a substance that will deform (flow) when a shear stress is applied. This is in contrast to a solid, which will compress rather than continuously deform under such a stress. Fluids are a subset of the phases of matter and include liquids (incompressible fluids), and gases (compressible fluids). Shown in Figure 2.1.1 is of a slice of fluid between two plates undergoing a shear stress. The bottom plate is stationary, while the top one is allowed to move. The fluid adjacent to the top plate will be pulled along at about the same speed as the plate, but the layer of fluid below that resists the motion just a bit and moves slower, same with the layer below that all the way to the layer next to the bottom plate. The depiction of women through popular mass media outlets has a tremendous influence upon global beauty culture, social construction and the personal self esteem of individual women, worldwide. Americanization also works to assimilate the rest of the world to perceive our standard of living superior, but attainable. Just as foreign nations are encouraged to adopt a capitalistic approach in their markets, foreign women are encouraged to adopt our definition of beauty. Cosmo Magazine is an example of this trend exemplifying the fun, fearless female around the world (see figure 4). Sold in 100 countries, in 34 languages, while reaching 60 million viewers; Cosmo has been described as a bible to beauty for its readers (see figure 5). I do know my classmates were affected different; however, these were my own personal challenges with the Anatomy course: Disorganization of course material o Class reading assignments did not match Lecture o Lecture PowerPoints were not provided despite request from several students. It was usually provided a couple of days before the test. This shortened the time to study, memorize and focus on the necessary anatomical structures. Lack of guidance on how to study the information presented As recommended during the PA orientation, I read the assigned readings for my courses; however, for anatomy, this exercise quickly became futile only because it did not contribute to helping to understand lectures provided in class. With voluminous reading assignments, many times, the anatomy lecture focused little or none from the information in the textbook. Lectures mostly presented anatomical structures and so focus on images were paramount. Therefore, the reading did little to help understand lecture material if one is not familiar enough with the anatomical structures. While this was the case, the PowerPoints with the anatomical structures were not provided.
