1INTRODUCTION
Originating in France, which had an even greater impact on English architecture than in previous
centuries, the Gothic style is an era of European architecture and art, starting 1140 and lasting until
the mid 16th century. It is the epoch between Romanesque and Renaissance and heavily makes use
of imagery as well as allegory.
In architecture, the Early, High and Late Gothic periods are distinguished. Depending on
surroundings and time, these periods have developed differently.
Vast cathedrals and churches but also a few domestic buildings provide the strongest representation
of Gothic architectural style (Wikipedia contributors, 2017a).
1.1ORIGIN OF THE TERM GOTHIC
The term Gothic originally was a swearword (meaning: barbaric, unfamiliar) which the Italian art
theorist Giorgio Vasari wanted to express his disregard of Gothic art in relation to antiquity. Gothic

Out of the three stories, The Dogs Could Teach Me, The Sniper, and The Flowers, The Dogs
Could Teach Me by Gary Paulsen best demonstrates description. This proves to be true through
Paulsen s consistency of descriptions throughout the entire story, unlike The Sniper. The Dogs
Could Teach Me begins with, There was a point where an old logging trail went through a small,
sharp sided gully a tiny canyon . . . It might have been a game trail that was slightly widened or
an old foot trail that had not caved in. Likewise, Liam O Flaherty starts out The Sniper by
writing, Dublin lay enveloped in darkness but for the dim light of the moon that shone through
fleecy clouds, casting a pale light as of approaching dawn over the streets . . . However, by the
third paragraph of The Sniper O Flaherty scrivens, He was eating a sandwich hungrily. He had
eaten nothing since morning. He had been too excited to eat, while Paulsen continues the same
pattern of writing saying, Later I saw the beauty of it, the falling lobes of blue ice that had
grown as the water froze and refroze, layering on itself. Even though the very beginning of The
Sniper collates with the beginning of The Dogs Could Teach Me, in the sense that both writers
start out with very strong descriptions, Paulsen s portrayals become more powerful because of
how consistent they are. Between Paulsen and O Flaherty s pieces of writing above, the reader
gains a clearer picture of the ambience surrounding Paulsen in The Dogs Could Teach Me than
of O Flaherty s character eating a sandwich due to the shift of focus O Flaherty decides to take.
Paulsen s main goal out of the two examples above was very evidently to describe these
situations, howbeit, O Flaherty s was not. Since the author of The Sniper decides to turn to action
based writing instead of creating vivid pictures in the third paragraph, it causes The Dogs Could
Teach Me to become a better example of descriptionthan The Sniper.
Paulsen also chooses to incorporate a variety of figurative language into the short story The Dogs
Could Teach Me, whereas the author of The Flowers does not, taking Paulsen s descriptions to the

In the Potato Core Osmosis Lab, the main purpose of the experiment was to test the different
amounts of corn syrup on potatoes. A variety of potatoes were distributed and placed into unknown
amounts of corn syrup which range from no corn syrup to 100% corn syrup. Then the following
day, the results were recorded on the size of the potato. Results stated that as the amount of syrup
increased, the smaller the potato got. The hypothesis stated that if the potatoes were placed in a
high percent of syrup, then it would shrink, which corresponds to the results causing the hypothesis
to be supported.
Soon results were shared and connections were made. Even though all the results weren t
identical, the numbers still shared similarities as it was only a few decimals off. Most of the initial

As a University of Northern Iowa College student taking Soundscapes, I attended a recital by
Annalea Milligan on Wednesday Oct. 19th, 2016 at 8:00 p.m. in Davis Hall, a small auditorium, at
the Gallagher Bluedorn. Annalea Milligan received her Bachelor of Music degree in performance
at Pacific Conservatory of Music, and is currently a first year graduate student pursuing a Master
of Music degree in bassoon performance at University of Northern Iowa. For the first half of the
program she played the bassoon in Rhapsody composed by Willson Osborne and then she was
accompanied by Mariya Akhadjanova on piano playing Variations on Theme of Pergolesi
composed by Otmar Nussio which included I. Arietta, II. Scherzetto, III. Tamburino, IV.
Lamento, V. Ostinato, VI. Rapsodia, VII. Elegia, VIII. Barbaresca, IX. Stornello, and X. Danza.

Why I Was The Only Person Who Was Ready
My thirteen year old mind could not handle waiting idly in an uncomfortable, wooden chair. By
that time, my powdered makeup had turned into beads of liquid. Can we please leave, I yelled
we re going to be late! In response to no response, I stood up from my chair and marched into my
cousin s room. I was startled as I walked in on one of the most frantic scenes I had ever
witnessed. There were clothes sprawled on the floor, makeup powder on the dresser and jewelry
on the bed. My cousins and aunts were running around the room; some were getting ready, some
were arguing and some were talking on the phone. The mixture of heat and expensive perfume

From the very first week of joining Art 101 I knew that I wanted my final art project to be a trio
of paintings for my mother, to pay homage to her career as an artist. Unfortunately, deciding the
theme or subject matter of these paintings was a much more difficult decision. The lecture on
narratives had the most influence on the final idea because I felt it resonated with my art style
the greatest. I love using small details or minor symbols to tell a story and the examples of

I originally started painting flowers simply because it was what my mother used, but throughout the
project, I found my own unique sources of inspiration. My mother explained to me that she used
certain flower types for their curves and painted the petals to have figure like appearances. During

in nature would be an interesting connection to some of the people I know best in the world

worldwide, it has a handful of segments that provide consumer goods to various country and
serves wholesale distributors. The company was founded in 1898 and is headquartered in
Purchase, New York and expanded worldwide first entering Japan an Eastern Europe in 1966
(PepsiCo). The company was established by a merger with Pepsi Cola and Frito Lay and
continues to add more brand names to its company today. On March 22nd, 2014 the net income
applicable to common shares was 1,216,000,000 this number is a slight decrease from the
1,742,000,000 net income applicable to common shares on December 28, 2013 (Yahoo Finance).
Earnings this year have been good with a positive numerical percentage of 3.76%. In the past year

Why Magic Should Not Be Confused With Witchcraft
In the 21st century what do people think of when they hear the word magic? Is it Harry Potter
and his friends fighting off Lord Voldemort or perhaps as Black Sabbath sings witches at Black
Masses? It is probably a bit of both depending on your age and religious beliefs. This was not the
case during the time period extending from antiquity to the early modern period. People in this time
believed that magiccould explain things they did not understand or could not explain. It was not
for entertainment. Magic probably claimed to provide all the answers which were later provided
by science, technology, and philosophy: it was everything. This statement stands true for all three
periods this paper focuses on even the early modern period when religion was supposed to have
taken place of magical beliefs. Magic should not be confused with witchcraft. People believed that
you could perform magic without being or needing a witch. In antiquity, people believed that
magic was between religion and superstition. In a sense, magic, understood as a kind of science,
has always tried to locate the secret forces in nature, especially their sympathies and antipathies
and use them for specific purposes. Ancient Greeks and Romans practiced or believed in many
forms of magic but the magical ideal that lasted the longest and is seen throughout all three time
