Theoretical Ethnographic And Conceptual Background
Theoretical Ethnographic and Conceptual Background
Theoretical Background
Feminism
Play is a source of significant theoretical insight in anthropology and other disciplines (Huizinga
1970; Turner 1982). Feminist research is explicitly directed towards comprehending evolving social
factors affecting women. (Harrison and Fahy 2005:702) and also provides a framework for
understanding the contribution of women in sports to development (Birrell 2005:61). The research in
this proposal is rooted in this idea, and holds that women s participation in sports is a feminist issue
deserving of research and theory development (Harrison and Fahy 2005:702). Many scholars in the
study of sociology of sports use feminist theory to understand power and gender relations (Birrell
2005:61; Coakley 2009:39). According to Smith [2010:98], issues of gender are core to social life and
this fact makes the concerns of masculinity and femininity essential. Critical feminist theorists have
stressed the importance of critiquing and changing the culture and Pfister and Kristin 2013:208) the
body and physicality of sports so that they represent the perspectives and experiences of women as
well as men (Maguire 2002:207; Coakley 2001:39). The aim of feminist theory is to expose gender
inequalities (Jarvis and Watts 2012:67) and imbalance in terms of funding, programs, facilities, media
coverage of women s sports (Messner 1988:207) and pay inequalities [Women s Sports Foundation
2011]. In a related

A Summary Of I Robot
The book, I Robot is written by Isaac Asimov. I Robot is a science fiction book that poses
philosophical theories about the future and technology effect on humanity. Along with many other
protagonists introduced in the book, Susan Calvin is a character that develops its detailed
characteristics as the plot grows and builds. Dr. Calvin is a changing character because she goes from
a non emotional, inhumane character to a deep thinking and a caring character as she faces certain
situations to lead her to a change. According to scientific research and studies, it is proven that people
are affected by their surrounding culture, even people like Susan Calvin. Asimov wrote and published
this book in 1950 to express his concerns and to inform the audience of how humanity s future may
turn out to be. The book is based on the year, 2035, where highly intelligent robots fill public service
positions throughout the world, operating under three rules to keep humans safe. In this future,
scientists discover a conspiracy that many enslave human race using technology and robotics. Dr.
Calvin plays one of the main role in this book since she is a scientist that has many achievements from
her field of robotics. She is a robopsychologist who uses many different methods of problems solving
to solve the problems that other scientists and mathematicians were incapable of doing. Through these
many adventures in the field of robotics, Dr. Susan Calvin displays her many character traits to the

Dementia Issues
Older people are said to be a vulnerable group in society and it is notable that those with dementia are
at a significant increase torisk of abuse, (see Manthorpe, et al 2005). The author of this paper spent her
placement in an adult social work team for a local authority, for people age 65 years and over. It soon
became apparent that different types of dementia seemed to permeate the caseload. The cases were
initially referred to social services due to challenges faced by a person to maintain daily living tasks
after a fall and hospital admission for example. Fundamentally, the majority of cases were people with
a form of dementia, and each case was as complicated as the next. In order to highlight not only the
physical but the emotional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dementia is a term used for a variety of symptoms caused when brain cells stop working correctly
with a cognitive functioning decline, (Alzheimer s disease International, 2012). Some types of
dementia include; Alzheimer s disease, Vascular dementia, frontal temporal dementia and Parkinson s
disease and Lewy body dementia, (Alzheimer s research, UK; Banerjee et al, 2007; Weiner Lipton
2009). One in three people who die after the age of 65 are found to have dementia, and of those, two
in three are female, (Department of Health, DoH, 2015). Some of the symptoms associated with
dementia include, increased difficulties in communication, action and response, changes in awareness,
attention and judgment, and visual spatial difficulties, (Alzheimer s research, UK, 2017). Data
collection states that dementia is expected to increase to 131.5 million worldwide by 2050 from the
current 46.8 million, (Alzheimer s Disease International, 2015). Furthermore, the DoH, (2015), report
that in the UK there are currently 850,000 over the age of 65 and a further 45,000 under the age of 65
living with dementia, and 69% of all people living in care homes have dementia. Elder abuse is

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)
Radio Frequency Identification Radio frequency identification (RFID) can be loosely linked all the
way back to WW2 as a method of tracking allied planes versus enemy fighters during aerial combat
(Roberti, 2005). In the PBSC class MAN4504, this technology was worshiped as a way to ring up an
entire cart of groceries with one simple hovering swipe over top of all the merchandise contained
within the cart. However, control freak school officials have recently gotten the idea that the RFID
system might be amply used as a way to keep track of students. But, the problem with this somewhat
big brotherish type of philosophy is that it can, indeed, be construed as an invasion of privacy. If one

1980s Economy
The onus of this essay is to support it with broad range of data, statistics, economic models and theory
to revive and analyze the real causes which left dramatic effects on the economy by discussing the
major events and effects it had on the general public that turned a once prosperous economy into
turmoil. We shall look at many major factors which triggered the downturn from a different spectrum
such as high levels of unemployment, the cost of living, public spending interest rates and many more.
Late 1970s and early 1980 s (1979 1983) was a turbulent period in the history of United Kingdom s
economy. Britain welcomed their first female prime minister when they were facing major economic
volatility. 80s was the phase when UK was facing cost push inflation like a lot of other countries
around the world. Due to the aftermath effects of 1970s when rising oil prices costs shifted from $3

As we can see from the graph above UK s inflation in 1980 was 18% followed by a steep drop in 1981
of 11.90%, 8.60% in1982 and lastly 4.60% in 1983 resulting in a highly disinflated economy due to
inflation rates sky rocketing which however was dealt severely by the government by decreasing
budget deficit and charging higher taxes by cutting extensively on spending.
The graph above demonstrates the enormous levels of unemployment during the early 1980s which
put over three million people out of work in 1983 . I believe the strong decline of the trade union
power in this phase resulted in deterioration of employment due to tight monetary policy with critical
reasoning such as unions not having enough power to push up the wages and wage demands not
meeting up to the point of

United States V Julius Steinnberg And Julius Rosenberg And...
In early March of 1951, the case United States v Julius Rosenberg, Ethel Rosenberg, and Morton
Sobell argued whether the Rosenbergs planned execution should forgo or be rescinded for violating
the Espionage Act of 1917 and being guilty of starting the Korean War. In the late 1940 s and early
1950 s the Cold War was ongoing, with the United States and the Soviet Union entrenched in an
ongoing battle over the supremacy of the west. Paul Frazier, an author for the Magazine of History in
Bloomington states, One of the most intriguing aspects of the Cold War relationship between the
Americans and the Soviets was the development of vast networks of spies and counterspies (Frazier).
The United States and the Soviet s relationship establishes an early conflict between the two nations,
further affecting future diplomatic relations. Julius Rosenberg s sympathy towards the Soviets and
anger towards the United State s current position on the world s economic stage ultimately led to his
act of traitorous espionage. Michael Browning, a writer for the Palm Beach Post newspaper states,
What united the Rosenbergs was a belief in communism, strengthened by the Depression and Russia s
fight against Hitler during World War 2 , (Browning). The United States depression and Julius s
admiration for Russia s fight against Hitler motivated him to turn against his home nation during a
time of crisis. To conclude, Cold War tensions and Julius s appreciation for Soviet life and government

Summer Football Story Analysis
To any person who is from a small town in Texas, football is king. Everything is football or related to
football, and in Odessa, Texas in 1988, football reigned supreme. Football became the escape for
people s problems and the town turned to the Permian Panthers for and saw hope in a successful
football team when there was little hope to be found elsewhere. Each character in this story faces their
own unique trials and tribulations during the football season. Each one of them turned to football as
the key to solving their problems, much like everyone in their town does. Football masked the
problems in the characters homes, the financial hardship that troubled the town, and covered up the
large amounts of racism that were very prevalent at this time. The ... Show more content on

As summer football practice begins, readers are introduced to the notable players of the 1988 Permian
Panthers; Boobie Miles, Jerrod McDougal, Mike Winchell, and Brian Chavez. We are introduced first
to James Earl Boobie Miles Jr., the team s all star running back. Boobie lived a very hard life from the
start. At the age of three his mother moved to Oklahoma and left Boobie with his grandmother. He
lived for a short time with his father, but allegations of physical abuse resulted in a lifetime of being
bounced from foster home to foster home. Before Boobie started high school, his uncle, L.V. Miles,
adopted him giving him a stable home and a positive role model. Influenced by his uncle, Boobie
began to excel at sports, especially football. Football provided another home where Boobie got the
kind of attention and admiration that led to opportunities someone from his background didn t
typically get a full ride scholarship to college. He also gained a lot of attention for his attitude that was
that nobody was as talented as he was. In the book Boobie is constantly quoted in the book as saying,

Belonging
Belonging is the relationship between an individual and his society, idealistically of one being in
harmony with their surrounding peers and therefore becoming accepted no matter what attributes they
possess. Belonging is an intrinsic need, it is a complex and variable state and in the end brings some
form of happiness to an individual. The film, Strictly Ballroom , produced by Baz Luhrman, focuses
upon the individual Scott who possesses the skills to win but defies the rules of the ballroom world by
adding unauthorised steps and by challenging the status quo. Similarly, The short story, A Straight Bat
, by Roger Holt, revolves around the individual Timothy whose individuality is suppressed by his
fathers expectations. The song, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As his father introduces to Timothy a cricket bat, Timothy s father sets the barriers of belonging
towards Timothy, who is attempting to develop his own identity. Timothy s disapproval and rejection
of the bat is highlighted in the short, sharp sentences and the negative connotations of the words stared
, hard and heavy in the quote, Timothy stared hard at the cricket bat. It looked heavy . The negative
description of the bat illustrates his objection towards the interest and values in which his father
expects him to abide by. This reinforces the negativity that a sense of individuality can be removed
and affected by the expectations of belonging imposed by those around us.
The negative conformist nature to conform is represented through the use of the bat , symbolising the
need to conform in order to feel accepted. The metaphor quoted within George s quote, Everyone must
have his own bat , emphasises that each person must follow their own path in order to develop their
own identity. We realise that complying by the expectations of society is the first step to acquiring
acceptance. The destroying of the violin, represents Timothy s individuality and the ability to grow, is
halted and depleted as the expectations of his father to play cricket, is of more priority to his son s
desire. Roger Holt s use of this, just like Strictly Ballroom , reinforces the effect of the negativity of
the forcefulness to conform by the

A Pundit’s Solution to Fixing Drug Violence in Mexico Essay
Thomas Friedman, a biweekly column contributor for the New York Times, is a pundit who
throughout his career has made some bold claims about controversial issues in the news. Bestement
and Gutherson argue that a pundit is merely one who gives opinions in an authoritative manner , and
that while they may speak convincingly, their skills as pundits lie in their ability... to learn quickly
about the broad contours of a wide range of subjects, and to project confidence and authority in
talking about them (Bestement, Gutherson 2005; 2,3). Since a pundit is one who uses existing
prejudices to explain complex issues to large audiences in a concise and very generalized manner,
inaccuracies are frequent in their arguments; but these inaccuracies ... Show more content on

The prohibition of drugs such as cocaine, opium, and marijuana is rooted in the racism and
xenophobia of the people of the United States. It was believed that cocaine consumption by the black
community could make them disregard the barriers that society had established between different
races , while Chinese were portrayed as assiduous opium smokers and Mexicans were labeled as avid
marihuana smokers (Recio 2002; 23,24). These faulty conceptions of the minorities in the United
States resulted in a new perception...that drug consumption could not be morally accepted and
therefore its use should be seriously restricted (Recio 2002; 24). Medical professionals in the United
States were strongly opposed to an all out ban of these drugs, but eventually the United States
congress passed the Harrison Act. This act was initially designed to limit the availability of these
narcotics by requiring a prescription from a physician to obtain them. Later, United States congress
passed the Volstead Act, which prohibited alcohol. In 1922 the Harrison Act became a totally
prohibitionist piece of legislation (Recio 2002; 25, 26). Immediately after the Harrison Act and the
Volstead Acts were passed, illegal drug traffickers took the place of physicians in providing narcotics
to the people who wanted them (Recio 2002; 26). In order to prevent this, the United States
government decided that if the country producing drugs

Country Songs Research Paper
Country music or country songs is a popular genre of American music that mainly evolved in the
Southern part of the country. Widely considered as American folk music, these songs are based on the
local customs and traditions. As per the experts of western music, the country songs also have a touch
of western music, as many musical effects of western music or songs are noticed in these songs as
well. However, most of these experts agree to the point that country songs often consist of dance tunes
and ballads that make them very popular among the dancers as well.
It is very true that most of the dance training schools or institutions make a wide use of these songs for

understand is that once they are in that spotlight, there is no turning back. Young athletes are exciting
to see in professional sports, but it makes you think of what they actually went through and handle in
everyday life as a teenager. In addition, Isamu Bae says ?Professional scouts must attempt to decipher
the maturity level of players, and for athletes in their teens, it is nearly impossible to figure out.?
Growing up, the time a child would have playing with his friends or going to the movies, would not be

My Family History
During my excessive research on my family background, I found that I had major complication
learning about my history. The reason for this was because my family was brought to a country that
totally wiped out my ancestor s culture. The only part I understand of my family history is slavery. We
started out as slaves in when first brought to America. We were originally from West Africa. We lived
in places such Nigeria, Congo, and Ghana. This was a time when we owned our land and freedom.
However, around the late 1500s, the western European culture had finally discovered our deeply
rooted heritage. They saw that beautiful land we had nourished, They saw the love within our
community. They saw the resource we provided. They realized the strength we had as a people. Soon
the western Europeans felt that needed to conquer us and our land. The wanted to prove that we re
able to conquer because of the more industrialized military they had. They forced my people to move
to a unformal land that conquered from another culture of people. So after arrival to the new world,
the European immediately forced my ancestors to change their names. They gave us our names of our
slave owners. This resulted in my ancestors to being someone s property. My ancestors worked day in
and day out in the hot sun; picking cotton, building houses, growing crops and being housemaids. The
European s would soon transition into what we know today as Americans. For the next four hundred
years, the Americans

Comparison Of Blade Runner And The Ghost In The Shell
What if technology became so advanced, that people cannot distinguish between artificial intelligence
and humans, not just in looks, but in personalities? These are the worlds created in both Ridley Scott s
1982 film Blade Runner and Masamune Shirow s 1989 manga The Ghost in the Shell. Both stories
involve self aware robots that are assimilated into theses culture. In Blade Runner, the protagonist
Rick Deckard works as a blade runner, a hunter who captures rogue replicants, to keep the society safe
from a robot takeover. Major Kusanagi, from The Ghost in the Shell, works in the cities section 9

In The Ghost in the Shell, along with the robots produced, humans are transformed into cyborgs.
When creating a cyborg, the narrator notes that the cyborg is over ninety percent machine... at first
glance it is very difficult to tell the difference between a cyborg and a robot (Shirow 101.2). The
cyborgs are mostly machine, but still have a human brain and spinal cord, which distinguishes them
from a robot. The narrator notes the difficulty in telling the difference between a cyborg and a robot,
which blurs the line between humanity and artificial intelligence. Since cyborgs are part human and
part machine, this shows how machines are becoming more like humans, and visa versa, since this
society can consider a robot a human as long as he or she has the spinal cord and brain of a human.
The line between robot and humans runs very thin, even blurred. Similarly, in Blade Runner
replicants, or robots, are impossible to distinguish, unless they take an eye test. This test is shown in
the first scene of the movie. During the test, a blade runner asks replicant Leon a series of questions
and the blade runner monitors his pupils while Leon is answering (Scott 3). The blade runner cannot
tell if Leon is a replicant until after the test because of how closely Leon resembles a human. This
further shows how the fading line between artificial intelligence and humanity. (How they look so

##equality In A Dolls House And A Midsummer Night s Dream
Both Henrik Ibsen s A Doll s House and Shakespeare s A Midsummer Night s Dream portray men as
superior, leading to a common theme of gender inequality and discrimination within relationships. In
Shakespeare s work, there is a comical aspect, downplaying the societal issue, but Ibsen s work is very
dramatic, casting a more serious light on the sexual discrimination. In Ibsen s work, A Doll s House,
the setting is 1879, during the Victorian Era. During this time, women were assigned to an inferior
role: Stay home and attend to the children and housekeeping while the men work. This system rested
on the idea that women were inferior to men, the two genders not socially nor legally equal. Nora is
the primary example of a woman constricted by social role. From the very beginning of the play, it is
clear that Torvald holds all of the power in the relationship. Nora is treated as a child, being called
discriminating names such as spendthrift , squirrel , little lark , etc. My little songbird must never do
that again. A song bird must have a clean beak to chirp with no false notes! (Ibsen 26). She is also set
to a certain standard and has to obey Torvald s rules. For example, Nora is banned from eating
macaroons because they will rot her teeth. Controlling what Nora may and may not eat shows just
how constricted and imprisoned she really is. Not only does he control her and what she does, but he
insults her as well. Torvald states, Of course! If only this obstinate little person can get her way! (Ibsen
35). Do you think I was going to let her remain there after that, and spoil the effect? (Ibsen 53). Nora
is confined to the societal values that show she needs a man by her side in order to take care of her and
to live. Surely you can understand that being with Torvald is a little like being with papa. (Ibsen 217).
This shows that for most of Nora s life, she s been under the control of a man. She wasn t only under
his control, but begged him for things like money as well, furthering her need for a man. Mrs. Linde
also plays a stereotypical role, fulfilled by the happiness and service of others. I only feel my life
unspeakably empty. No one to live for anymore. (Ibsen 143). She also states I want to

Dove and Manchester United
Merit One
Introduction
I have been asked to produce a clear set of notes to go with my presentation of Dove and Manchester
United fully comparing the effectiveness of the marketing concepts and principals.
First of all I am going to start comparing the similarities of the aims of the two businesses. This is that
Manchester United wants to become the best football club on and off the pitch. Dove has a similar aim
which is trying to grow its brand of the real beauty campaign for women. This will be effective for
both branding companies as they will become one of the top sellers when it comes to future high
standards.
Promotion
Same Manchester United and Dove communicate the promotion of their product by using the media
like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Manchester united, however, have to base their product pricing at a fixed rate with the competitors
club/ business because fans will not be happy and will end up in an argument. The pricing depends on
the individual name and number on the back of the t shirt like for example Ronaldo number 7 would
be at the highest fixed rate as he is the best player for Manchester united. The prices vary from £46 57
after that.
Appropriate Dove s pricing is appropriate as it is used as a daily product so spending £2 15 for a
product is reasonable in this case.
Manchester united s pricing is also appropriate as they are popular to their fans especially and they
have set their aim of becoming the best football club on and off the pitch so this would lead to gaining
more profit.
Product
Type Dove manufactures their products for beauty range of women. These are not just a limited type
of women; these are women of all shapes and sizes, ethnicity and age over 40. The beauty products of
Dove are required for every household as it is a leading brand product but it is also a product that
helps allow women to pamper themselves and look after their skin.
Manchester united, on the other hand, manufactures and sells their products to fans of the football club

Analysis Of Diary Of A Wimpy Kid
Have you ever read a book where you read all about a lousy teenagers problems? Maybe even his
whole life. His crazy embarrassing family, and his weirdo friends. Diary of a Wimpy Kid. A great
book written by the one and only Jeff Kinney. Greg Heffley, the main character, is a wimpy kid and
most likely will never change his ways. Someone tries to tell Gregs father, Frank. Frank tries to get his
son to man up a little bit and signs him up for sports and clubs. Which, obviously did not work. ... I
got down off the deck and started climbing up the tree... I couldn t believe my ears. I guess dad felt
like he owed me for saving him yesterday, and this was his way of paying me back (Kinney 109 and
113). The theme of the novel is to be strong because someone will do something about it. The passage
above connects to this theme because Greg had to man up to climb the tree to retrieve his baby
brothers blanket after he threw it into a tree off of the deck. Afterwards, his father did not want to take
a turn playing a game because he did not want to sit next to someone that he did not like. Therefore
Greg took his place and basically saved his life for the day. Although Greg s ways may never change
he definitely made some progress with manning up on that day. One setting from this novel that is
important to this book is the Heffley household. It is important to the book because if it weren t for the
Heffley house, many events would not have happened. Like Greg s dad finding out his

According to AU C 240, fraudulent financial reporting and misappropriation of assets are the two

criminals are committing crimes internationally, and this is making the job of law enforcement
agencies even more difficult, more time consuming, and more dangerous. The criminal justice system
does still have corruption from different agencies, especially the law enforcement. Today,

The Bolsheviks
Lawyers would say that Europe, Asia, and the United States of America are completely different.
However, from the point of view of the citizens, the similarities in their daily lives are numerous, even
if some fundamental differences remain. To begin with the most obvious similarity and example: in
the USA, as well as in parts of Europe, citizens use a single currency, identical to the currency of their
neighboring States. Just as in Europe, in the USA, several decisions remain the responsibility of the
states, such as highway code, certain taxes, social welfare, minimum wages, and certain areas of
justice. At the political level, some plea for further independence of the States in relation to the federal
government, while others are bidding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It should not be unforeseen that the Bolsheviks worked hard to safeguard that any person potentially
antagonistic to them did not retain arms. The first Soviet gun controls were enacted during the Russian
Civil War, as Czarists, Western troops, and national independence movements fought the central Red
regime. Firearm registration was instituted on April 1, 1918. In October 1918, the Council of People s
Commissars (the government) ordered the renunciation of all firearms, ammunition, and sabers. As
has been the case in nearly every nation where firearms registration has been introduced, registration
proved a preamble to confiscation. Excused from the confiscation order, however, were affiliates of
the Communist Party. A 1920 decree imposed a obligatory minimum penalty of six months in prison
for non Communist possession of a firearm, even where there was no felonious intent. After the Red
triumph in the Civil War, the firearm laws were consolidated in a Criminal Code, which if broken,
unauthorized possession of a firearm would be punishable by rigid labor. A 1925 law made
unauthorized possession of a firearm punishable by three months of hard labor, plus a fine of 300
rubles (equal to about four months wages for a highly paid construction worker). Stalin apparently
found little need to alternate the weapons control structure he had inherited. This chapter of Lethal
Laws summarizes the genocide perpetrated by Stalin from 1929 to 1953, starting with his efforts to
collectivize farming by destroying the class of property owning farmers. Altogether, about twenty
million people were murdered, worked to death in slave labor camps, or deliberately starved to death
by Stalin s government. Stalin s successful campaign of genocide against the Kulaks and against
dissident Communists served as a model for

Reducing the Immunological Reactivity of Food Allergens by Enzymatic Hydrolysis/ Impact of
Enzymatic Hydrolysis on the Allergenic Potential of Foods Introduction (Can contribute depending on
the requirement)
Food allergy represents an abnormal, immune mediated hypersensitivity to certain foods resulting in
the onset of instant or delayed adverse health effects in sensitized individuals. In developed countries,
around 5% and 3 8% of young children and adults respectively have food allergy (Vanga et al.,
2015;..). In addition, recent reports from developed and developing countries seems to indicate that
the prevalence of food allergy is on an alarming the rise (). More than 170 foods have been identified
to have the capacity to elicit immune mediated reactions. However, only a subset of these foods are
known to be responsible for most of the reported cases of allergic reactions (). Observation of the main
allergenic foods from different parts of the world showed that one food may be a significant
contributor to allergic reaction in one region while its contribution to the prevalence of food allergy
may be minimal in another region. Nevertheless, major allergenic foods can be categorized as seafood,
peanut and tree nuts, cereals and pseudocereals, dairy, egg, legumes, fruits and some oil seeds.
The consumption of foods mentioned above by a sensitive patients can result in symptoms that may
range from mild nausea, vomiting and itchy skin to severe

Field Trip Reflection
Reflection Paper I went to Starbucks for my Field Trip and prior to this trip, I made a list of things that
I would like to particularly observe relating to American culture/values. Some ideas included
interactions between American people, gender differences as well as employees attitude. I wanted to
examine the ways in which Americans behave around people or their behavior towards other people.
Before the field trip, I had a few thoughts/assumptions/beliefs about Americans such as I thought
Americans were more hostile and reserved, they usually keep to themselves. However, my
assumptions changed after the field trip which will be explained later. I was excited and intrigued to

Some even started up conversations with the stranger next to them like How has your day been? or the

friendliness of people showed me American s authentic/genuine spirit. It made them look more likable
and accommodating. Furthermore, I observed the interactions between male and female and how it
relates to gender differences. I noticed that majority of men were a gentlemen and have manner. For
example, a few men would let women go ahead of them in line when they both arrived
simultaneously, being complete strangers. This showed me equality in society such as how men treat
women with care and as well as goodness of humanity. This could also be form of norm in society in
American values as a gentlemen courtesy and politeness. It is our expected perception of masculinity
what society deems as appropriate behavior for a man . The attitudes of the employees particularly put
a smile on my face. They were hardworking, took orders down politely and efficiently, ensuring that
my order was perfect. They had manners and gave me a positive/happy vibe. They made sure to work
fast and efficiently, trying their best to not hold up the queue. They were quick in making their

The Marshall Plan and Accomplishments of George Marshall...
George C. Marshall was an essential player in the mid twentieth century. His military expertise and
planning abilities led us to victory in world war two. The same made the Marshall plan so effective in
reviving Europe s down economy and standard of living. As secretary of state and defense his
leadership skills and reputation as an honest man made him the perfect fit for the job. To say the least,
George Marshall had a vast influence over this country while he was in power. On September 1st

Fearing the war would go on forever, Marshall came up with a plan to end it. His plan was dubbed
operation overlord, or the D Day invasion of the beaches of Normandy which took place on June 6,
1944. Nine months later, Germany surrendered, bringing peace to Europe. George Marshall truly lived
up to being the architect of victory that President Truman called him. Following the war, Marshall
made a plan to rebuild and restore stability to Europe. Marshall s European Recovery plan, or the
Marshall plan, was all about the aid of self help, not doing everything for them. The initiative to
rebuild came from participating countries, not the US. The plan established the Economic Cooperation
Administration which provided 13.3 billion dollars to the participating countries. Although Marshall
tried to include the Soviet Union in all this, Moscow rejected the plan, thereby excluding them from
the arrangement. The objectives were to increase productivity, stimulate economic growth, and to
promote trade. All of these goals were realized by December 31, 1951, when the aid ended. The
Marshall plan was one of the most successful foreign policy initiatives in United States history, and
led to a strong NATO alliance. In order to become the secretary of defense, George Marshall needed a
congressional waiver because the National Security Act prohibited anyone who was an active duty

Wealth Gap Between Whites And Minorities Essay
Wealth Gap in America America has a lengthy history on how it became the powerful country it is
today, and although its history can be interrupted in many ways (depending who you ask) one thing
that is for certain is that wealth has yet to be distributed equally amongst minorities. According to the
article Income inequality matter; Extreme gap in wealth makes society unstable. Philip Meyer claims
that the wealth gap between whites and minorities has existed since Ronald Reagans term of
presidency (A9). Although Ronald Reagans term ended many years ago the mistakes that caused this
imbalance of wealth (and its aftermath) while he was in office remains almost if not exactly the same
as when the problem initially began (Meyer A9). The wealth gap continues to target minorities and is
affecting our communities at an alarming rate, however, many attempts have been made to reduce its
existence but the factors of income inequality, unemployment rates and discrimination before and after
our recent 2007 recession prevents our country from eliminating such a toxic problem. The wealth gap
is a problem that which the hard working people of America know very little about. Using Ignorance
towards this problem does not cease its existence of it but rather contributes to growth because it s not
being addressed. It s a problem that seems to affect mainly the minorities of the U.S. population, such
as Blacks and Hispanics. However, not everyone is in the dark about this lingering ever

Marya Mannes How Do You Know It s Good
In a world that has become immune to accepting all types of art, Marya Mannes believes we have lost
our standards and ability to identify something as good or bad . In her essay, How Do You Know It s
Good , she discusses society s tendency to accept everything out of fear of wrongly labelling
something as being good or bad. She touches on various criteria to judge art, such as the artist s
purpose, skill and craftsmanship, originality, timelessness, as well as unity within a piece rather than
chaos. She says that an individual must decide if something is good on the basis of instinct,
experience, and association (Mannes). I believe that by using standards and the process of association,
we will be able to judge what makes an art piece good in comparison to others. However, Mannes
forces me to consider the difference between what may be appealing versus what is actually good, and
when deciding which art we should accept, which is truly more important. I believe that good and bad
are two ends of a large, subjective spectrum of grey area. It is possible for a piece of art to be good in
some areas and bad in others, and if something does not live up to all of our standards, it does not
necessarily mean it should be dismissed. Thus, I believe my personal standards for judging art are
based on which my standards are largely based on the personal reaction evoked from a piece of art.
Though I agree with Mannes standards to an extent, I believe that certain standards, such as evoking a
personal response, can be more telling of if a piece of art is good as opposed to its timelessness, or the
level of experience of an artist in his/her craft. As Mannes stated, the process of association is essential
in determining the quality of art, by comparing it to the other art we have seen. I am able to judge the
multitexts I have read in class by using the process of association to compare them to each other. For
example, we are able to judge the quality of the pieces by comparing and contrasting them to each
other. All three of our multitexts used certain writing models such as analogy poems and dialogue.

Differences in Crime Statistics in the Uniform Crime...
Arguments over crime statistics have been raging ever since governments began counting criminal
activity. In 1930 the United States congress authorized the attorney general of the United States to
survey crime in America. The Federal Bureau of Investigation was chosen to implement the program.
(Schmalleger p.38)
The Uniform Crime Reports is the survey taken by the FBI. This measure of crime in America
depends on reports to the police by victims of crimes. The UCR Program was developed by the FBI
for the purpose of serving law enforcement as a tool for operational and administrative purposes.
Through the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), the UCR Program was developed.

Arson is an exception to the Hierarchy Rule . One of the problems with the Uniform Crime Reports is
that many citizens do not always make official reports. For example, many women refuse to report
rapes because they do not want to relive the ordeal. Some citizen s feel that the police will not be able
to do anything about a crime committed against them therefore they do not report it. Another problem
with the Uniform Crime Reports is that Victimless crimes are rarely reported. These are crimes like
prostitution, gambling, and drug use. Since many of these crimes are not reported, then the UCR
becomes somewhat vague and incomplete.
When reviewing crime data, it is important for the reader to note the difference between offenses and
arrests. Offenses relate to events and arrests relate to persons. A single offense may involve no
arrestees; may involve one arrestee; or may involve many arrestees. National Crime Victimization
Survey (NCVS) is the Nation s primary source of information on criminal victimization. Twice each
year, data are obtained from a nationally representative sample of roughly 49,000 households
comprising about 100,000 persons on the frequency, characteristics, and consequences of criminal
victimization in the United States. The survey reports the likelihood of victimization by rape, sexual

Values Of The Game, By Bill Bradley
Schema To reiterate, Bill Bradley s Virtues of leadership, resilience, and passion are what account
most for his legacy as a citizen. According to Bill Bradley, author of Values of the Game he discusses
leadership and what it means to him. Leadership means getting people to think, believe, see, and do

their own behalf; being cautious of their surroundings led by fears and anxiety created by those who

Retrograde Amnesia Essay
Retrograde Amnesia, being a common type of Amnesia, is the one most people are familiar with.
(King, 2016) Retrograde Amnesia is the loss of past memories. If someone falls and hits their head,
the damage caused by that accident could cause the person to forget that the accident even occurred.
(Pg. 234) For example, a friend once decided to try snowboarding, and did not learn how to stop
before she went to the top of the hill. She went down, picking up speed, and did not notice the small
cliff at the bottom until it was too late to turn away. She decided to fall so she would not go over the

Her fall had caused Anterograde Amnesia, and she could no longer make new memories.
Her Doctors decided that the damage was extensive, and with her age, there was no chance of her
regaining her ability to create new memories. We also discovered what looked like damage caused by
a stroke, which had gone unnoticed by us. Before the fall, she had some difficulty remembering recent
events, which was most likely caused by damage from the stroke. When she fell, more damage
occurred in the same area, leaving her with Anterograde Amnesia. Both of those events damaged the
part of the brain that encodes. Without the ability to encode, she could no longer make new memories.
(King, 2016 Pg. 233,234) Where Does Memory Loss Occur?
Since memory is layered, loss can occur in many different areas. (King, 2016 Pg. 216, 217) In
Retrograde Amnesia, long term memory is what is affected. Long term memory is more permanent
than any other type of memory. It allows for lasting memories, that can sometimes be stored for life.
Long term is complex, and the brain uses many components in order to successfully create memories

Individuality Vs. Conformity In The Shining Houses By...
Individuality and conformity is a battle between being a leader and being a follower, finding out who
you are and your desires to be accepted by others. In Alice Munro s short story The Shining Houses
and Wallace Stevens poem Disillusionment of Ten O Clock , both the author and the poet shows how
being an individual is more valuable than being one of those conformed copies .
Is it better to stand out and compromise your values or is it better to stay comfortable in the crowd and
give into peer pressure? Often in our society we are forced to act in a certain way in order to be
considered normal and fit into a group, that is why a lot of people eventually conform. People conform

The Chesapeake Colonies
Beginning 1625, the first colonies in America was established in the Chesapeake, New England, and
Carolina region. More than 250,000 European settlers came over to the colonies, along with 300,000
West African slaves. The colonial societies would become the area for gold, god, and glory. Some of
the colonies flourished while some struggled to survive.
To begin, the Chesapeake region consisted of two colonies: Virginia and Maryland. In 1584, Sir
Walter Raleigh went on an exploratory voyage with several men to Roanoke Island. Landing was only
temporary because they needed decided the island was fertile to support a settlement. A couple of
years later, John White came over with 117 men, women, and children to settle in Roanoke Island.

ABSTRACT:
Once the level within the dam surpasses certain level, the dam is at risk of collapsing. To avert this, we
ought to constantly monitor dam level to ensure that dam structure doesn t cave in underneath the
pressure from the water. A dam is really a barrier that impounds water or subterranean streams. The
primary water quality related parameters that should be supervised are Temperature, Turbidity and ph.
This paper describes the theoretical aspects associated with the work we re doing and also the
particulars concerning the illustration showing the automation of dam gates. Dams generally serve the
main reason for retaining water, while other structures for example floodgates or levees (also referred
to as dikes) are utilized to manage or prevent water flow and drainage into specific land regions. You
can do this by manipulating the ton gates when the level surpasses certain limits.

Global sourcing can be simply defined as coordinating and integrating of procurement requirement

Bracing Against The Eagle Research Paper
Rex was swinging his wings and bracing as hard as ever against the eagle trying for his life.It was just
him and the eagle fighting against each other. It was are annual vacation to see my Grandma in a
extremely small town in northeastern Washington in a town named Republic, Washington where my
Mom and Dad lived and went through school together and where I grew up the first two years of my
life and where I learned to fish and hunt . At my Grandma and grandpas house they have ducks, lots of
ducks, and I always play with them but there is this eagle that likes to swoop down and snatch the
ducks up and eat them.
We had a duck named Rex and he was two and a half feet tall and fifteen pounds. He was the biggest
duck my Grandma and Grandpa had and was feisty and mean, even there German Shepherd named
Moose was scared of Rex.He was the alpha duck and was the leader of his flock, kind of like a war
general yet a bird. Right then the eagle locked onto Rex. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rex was bracing against the eagle and trying not to die than he resorted to wing to wing combat and
tried as hard as he could to kick some feather butt. Him and the eagle were at it and Rex had ducks
and ducklings to protect and the eagle was just hungry. Rex had to live up to his name and try to save
his flock so he was really under pressured to. Rex and the eagle keep going and finally Rex slaps and
bites the eagle one more time and then swish the eagle flew of and then the rest of the summer there
was no more problems with the stupid eagle. Then one year later Rex was then killed by a wolf or
some other large predator but he was missed even though he was a giant pain in the butt, literally, but
he was a cute duck though. He was cool. Then we started thinking duck vs eagle 2! Coming

Role and Concept of Sleary s Circus in Hard Times
Hard Times is a Charles Dickens novel set in the social backdrop of the Victorian era during the
Industrial Revolution that took place during the 1850s. The ill effects of Victorian Utilitarianism are
upheld in this moralistic vision of the writer. Unlike most of his novels, Hard Times is not based in
London but in the red and black seemingly monotonous structures of Coketown. That being said, it
still realistically allows the reader to observe the systems and structures of society forced to face
various economic and social hardships. What preserves the novel as a social commentary is that the
struggles in life and human emotions are still relevant for these times .
The rise in capitalist ideals brought forth an age where the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though the circus is a commercial enterprise, it still feels more like a family than Grangrind s
household will ever manage to. Mr. Sleary thus, acts as a protector and though he feels compassion for
Sissy, he is aware that it is not economically viable for the company to keep her and therefore thinks
of more suitable alternatives like her continued education. Unlike Gradgrind who condemns his
daughter to an incompatible and unsuitable marriage. The circus as a whole with all its colours is a
great visual contrast to the image evoked by Coketown. It is not shrouded by the by product of its
labour, like the soot that coated the city. The circus, here, stands for all that is loyal and free.
Nonetheless, there is a certain disdain in which the gypsies are viewed by the educated classes, as
Bounderby puts it we are the kind of people who know the value of time, and you are the kind of
people who don t know the value of time . This is primarily because they cannot be restrained by the
laws and obligations of society. Dickens reiterates his own personal faith in those people, like the
gypsies by highlighting the presence of complete trust, emotions and faith as opposed to the doubt
prevalent in most of society, even with all the privileges and high standards of morality they seem to
possess. It is able to address issues like education that is only successful when

James Watson Critique
Another method that scientists do when they are researching is discussing and comparing your
experiment results or models with other scientists data or even your own to confirm or contradict your
idea. For example, in section 27, Watson and Crick finished building the next double helix DNA
structure model after a long wait for the metal bases that were required in order to continue
constructing it. In section 28, they found out that the data that both he and Rosy had supported the
structure that James and Francis had built. Rosy s idea that there had to be an outside backbone and
middle bases also worked hand in hand with the double helix model. By using others already existing
data, they were able to confirm that the model was strongly supported ... Show more content on

The very first man who is mentioned, is Francis Crick. In the beginning, Watson didn t know much
about crystallography and was unable to progress faster without the knowledge, so Crick taught him
about it. All throughout the adventure, Crick and Watson were constantly jamming their heads
together, working hard towards the discovery. This included gathering data, discussing theories with,
and even building model structures. Without Francis, the discovery of the structure of DNA wouldn t
have happened as soon as it did. Another important scientist mentioned is Maurice Wilkins. In the first
place, Wilkins was who inspired Watson to study DNA. When he presented his photograph of
crystallized DNA in Naples, that is what first caught Watson s attention and drew him to the topic.
Maurice was also someone who Watson and Crick shared their information and discussed theories
with. When Watson went to Maurice s lab to tell him about Linus Pauling s incorrect paper, Maurice
showed him the copies of X ray photographs that he had copied from Rosalind Franklin. Speaking of
Rosalind, she also played an important part in the discovery. She was Maurice Wilkins assistant in the
lab, someone who Maurice had gripes about because of her moodiness and seemingly stubborn
attitude. Despite this, no one can deny that her contribution was just as necessary as the other
scientists in

The City s Love, By Lucille Clifton
The love affair between a city and the people who reside there can be influential in a person s life.
Cities share a relationship with their residents and the residents start to ponder about their emotional
relationship with their homes. In in the inner city by Lucille Clifton, the speaker thinks of uptown and
how different it is compared to her home, the inner city. The speaker sees how unique the inner city is
and takes pride in her home. In The City s Love by Claude McKay the speaker experiences a brief
moment of acceptance by the city. Both Clifton and McKay s poem both illustrate joy towards a city.
The connotation used to describe their joy allows the reader to see the different relationships that the

speaker is. In the first lines the reader can infer that the moment that the speaker is talking about is
uncommon and treasures his experience: For one brief golden moment rare like wine, The gracious
city swept across the line; (l. 1 2). Collaborating his first thoughts to his closing ones The great, proud
city, seized with a strange love, (l. 7) The speaker describes this love as strange and golden because he
was used to the mistreatment in a different far more discriminatory city. This city shows affection
towards him making the speaker forget that he is different from the majority The gracious city swept
across the line; Oblivious of the color of my skin, Forgetting that I was an alien guest, (l. 2 4). Even
though the speaker has experienced hate from another society he ends up finding a city that seems to

Relation Between Science and Religion Essay
on What is the Relation between Science and Religion
William Lane Craig
Examines several ways in which science and theology relate to each other.
Back in 1896 the president of Cornell University Andrew Dickson White published a book entitled A
History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom. Under White s influence, the
metaphor of warfare to describe the relations between science and the Christian faith became very
widespread during the first half of the 20th century. The culturally dominant view in the West even
among Christians came to be that science and Christianity are not allies in the search for truth, but
adversaries.
To illustrate, several years ago I had a debate with a philosopher of science at Simon Fraser ... Show

They were remarkably successful in pushing through their agenda. But philosophers of science during
the second half of the 20th century have come to realize that the idea of a warfare between science and
theology is a gross oversimplification. White s book is now regarded as something of a bad joke, a one
sided and distorted piece of propaganda.
Now some people acknowledge that science and religion should not be regarded as foes, but
nonetheless they do not think that they should be considered friends either. They say that science and
religion are mutually irrelevant, that they represent two non over lapping domains. Sometimes you
hear slogans like Science deals with facts and religion deals with faith. But this is a gross caricature of
both science and religion. As science probes the universe, she encounters problems and questions
which are philosophical in character and therefore cannot be resolved scientifically, but which can be
illuminated by a theological perspective. By the same token, it is simply false that religion makes no
factual claims about the world. The world religions make various and conflicting claims about the
origin and nature of the universe and humanity, and they cannot all be true. Science and religion are
thus like two circles which intersect or partially overlap. It is in the area of

The Theory Of Self And Identity Essay
The idea of self and identity is highly intricate, and the self can either be one of three options: the self
is private, constructive, or a mixture of both. In the private viewpoint, the self is static, founded on a
set number of traits, values, and dispositions that will not change with time. The constructivist theory
argues that the self is changeable by nature and changes based on varying circumstances. Then, there is
the mixture idea, that these separate opposing ideas are connected, as the way the self is developed
and reflected upon is based on how the brain and individual thoughts develop. This is highlighted in
Gopnik s statement that, Ourselves shape our brains at least as much as our brains our selves (Gopnik
2). When reflecting on Gopnik s article more it seems only logical to think that some parts of the self
is constructed, whereas other parts are private, and this completely depends on the environment of the
child. Parenting styles is one of those environmental aspects, and it largely impacts how a child s
socioemotional, and language skills develop, which in turn has a ripple effect on how the child
ultimately views their own personality and self. The most telling test to measure socioemotional
development of a child is through attachment, and the most successful way to measure this is through
the strange experiment. Children are classed as insecure resistant, insecure disorganized, insecure
avoidant, or secure based on how they behave during the

Working successfully with others requires practical as well as personal skills. One of the main
advantages of working with others is that you can benefit from the skills of others that you may not
have yourself and share your own skills, and discovering your talents. For example, Sierra has lots of
good ideas and is good at putting them together. Sam is talkative and good at gathering ideas. Jacob is
a good listener and able to summarize at the end of a meeting.
Transition:
Now that you know a little about being able to work together,
let s look at coming up with better thoughts than an individual will come up with.
II. Students can see how different perspectives, constructive deliberation, questioning, and critical
analysis can result in better solutions and performance. If students take an exam individually and then
do the same exam as a group, the group exam score is almost always higher because students share
what they know, debate the answers, and through that process can often find their way to the right
answer.

My Hero A Hero
What does make a hero a hero? Is it there looks? Alternatively, maybe is it their personality? However,
the question is what are those essential qualities that make one a hero? Different people require
different heroes to look up to or try to emulate. However, whoever it may be, they all possess certain
qualities. My hero is my mother, for the reason that she is selfless, compassion, and courage. That
kind of selflessness can often be premeditated, since concentrating on others needs often winds up
helping one accomplish one s own goals. However, a heroic leader does so without any anticipation of
a return. The display and concern show the care one has for others. This can often apparent itself in
strong but gentle actions planned to increase the lives of others. Courage and bravery come to mind
first when we think of heroism. However, it is difficult to achieve anything truly heroic unless one is
up against overwhelming chances. As Nelson Mandela put it, Courage is not the absence of fear, but
the triumph over it. These minor acts of heroism rarely attract any notice. A true hero is always
sympathetic, benevolent and shows a great deal of compassion and sympathy to those poorly or in
agony. He or she keeps away judgements; that are oriented to the self and embraces an attitude that
serves others. Selflessness is an extremely important heroic trait, maybe the uppermost important. It is
the driving force behind heroism. Heroes become heroes when they do something for

The Great Gatsby Weather Analysis
In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the weather sets a mood or follows the emotion
of the novel. Many people Change their mood in certain weather conditions, and in this novel, the
weather is symbolic of the mood in the novel. Fitzgerald uses the rainy weather in this novel to
symbolize several things. For example, on the day that Gatsby plans to meet with Daisy, it is raining
before they meet. The day agreed upon was pouring rain. At eleven o clock a man in a raincoat
dragging a lawn mower tapped at my front door and said that Mr. Gatsby had sent him over to cut my
grass. (Fitzgerald 88). In this situation, the rain represents an anxious and hopelessness mood. When
Gatsby arrived at Nick s house, he begins to doubt ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The next day was broiling, almost the last, certainly the warmest, of the summer. As my train emerged
from the tunnel into the sunlight, only the hot whistles of the National Biscuit Company broke the
simmering hush at noon. The straw seats of the car hovered on the edge of combustion; the woman
next to me perspired delicately for a while into her white shirtwaist and then, as her newspaper
dampened under her fingers, lapsed despairingly into the deep heat with a desolate cry (120 121). This
symbolizes the upcoming conflict and foreshadows the climax of emotions that are to come, with the
confrontation in the suite, Daisy s rejection, and Myrtle s death. The heat also shows the mix and
confusion of emotions in Daisy, and Daisy recognizes that ... it s so hot ... And everything s so
confused ... (125). This quote symbolizes Daisy and Gatsby s relationship. It is when the weather is at
it s hottest that Gatsby s and Daisy s relationship reaches a climax. Also when Nick, Gatsby, Daisy,
Jordan, and Tom are all sitting in the Plaza, the book describes the daytime to also be unbearably hot.
Oh, let s have fun, she begged him. It s too hot to fuss. He didn t answer (126). This quote shows that
as the weather progressively gets hotter so does the tempers of Gatsby and Tom. The heat, in this case,
symbolizes the way that hatred between Daisy s husband and Gatsby

in 1960 and To Live is his most famous novel. The novel also has a movie based on it which was

Communist government . The background of the story is in China from 1940s to 1960s. The whole
story is focus on the family of Xu, and Fugui is the most important character. Audiences can easily

In the novel, Hua Yu continue the story by death. There are 9 characters pass away which include his

characters are died an unnatural death. For example, Erxi dies due to the construction incident, and the
grandson of Fugui die because of eat too much beans. In the end of the novel, Fugui is the only one
who still alive. Although there s tragedy all over the story, but Fugui never complain about it. What he
does is accept these misfortunes as decreed by fate. In the movie Yimou Zhang had made some change
to the plots. Although Jiazhen is sick, she remain alive until the end of the film, so does Erxi and
mantou. Meanwhile, the reason why Youqing and Fengxia s death are also changed in the film, too. In
the novel, Youqing die while donating blood to the magistrate s wife. This is an error made by the
medical worker because they think the magistrate s wife s life is more important than an ordinary
people. In the film, Youqing die due to the traffic accident. On the surface, this is an accident but I

  • 2. Theoretical Ethnographic And Conceptual Background Theoretical Ethnographic and Conceptual Background Theoretical Background Feminism Play is a source of significant theoretical insight in anthropology and other disciplines (Huizinga 1970; Turner 1982). Feminist research is explicitly directed towards comprehending evolving social factors affecting women. (Harrison and Fahy 2005:702) and also provides a framework for understanding the contribution of women in sports to development (Birrell 2005:61). The research in this proposal is rooted in this idea, and holds that women s participation in sports is a feminist issue deserving of research and theory development (Harrison and Fahy 2005:702). Many scholars in the study of sociology of sports use feminist theory to understand power and gender relations (Birrell 2005:61; Coakley 2009:39). According to Smith [2010:98], issues of gender are core to social life and this fact makes the concerns of masculinity and femininity essential. Critical feminist theorists have stressed the importance of critiquing and changing the culture and Pfister and Kristin 2013:208) the body and physicality of sports so that they represent the perspectives and experiences of women as well as men (Maguire 2002:207; Coakley 2001:39). The aim of feminist theory is to expose gender inequalities (Jarvis and Watts 2012:67) and imbalance in terms of funding, programs, facilities, media coverage of women s sports (Messner 1988:207) and pay inequalities [Women s Sports Foundation 2011]. According to scientific research and studies, it is proven that people are affected by their surrounding culture, even people like Susan Calvin. Asimov wrote and published this book in 1950 to express his concerns and to inform the audience of how humanity s future may turn out to be. The book is based on the year, 2035, where highly intelligent robots fill public service positions throughout the world, operating under three rules to keep humans safe. In this future, scientists discover a conspiracy that many enslave human race using technology and robotics. Dr. Calvin plays one of the main role in this book since she is a scientist that has many achievements from her field of robotics. The author of this paper spent her placement in an adult social work team for a local authority, for people age 65 years and over. It soon became apparent that different types of dementia seemed to permeate the caseload. The cases were initially referred to social services due to challenges faced by a person to maintain daily living tasks after a fall and hospital admission for example. Fundamentally, the majority of cases were people with a form of dementia, and each case was as complicated as the next. In order to highlight not only the physical but the emotional ... • 5. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Radio Frequency Identification Radio frequency identification (RFID) can be loosely linked all the way back to WW2 as a method of tracking allied planes versus enemy fighters during aerial combat (Roberti, 2005). In the PBSC class MAN4504, this technology was worshiped as a way to ring up an entire cart of groceries with one simple hovering swipe over top of all the merchandise contained within the cart. However, control freak school officials have recently gotten the idea that the RFID system might be amply used as a way to keep track of students. But, the problem with this somewhat big brotherish type of philosophy is that it can, indeed, be construed as an invasion of privacy. If one is at all familiar with the Constitution that our ... • 6. 1980s Economy The onus of this essay is to support it with broad range of data, statistics, economic models and theory to revive and analyze the real causes which left dramatic effects on the economy by discussing the major events and effects it had on the general public that turned a once prosperous economy into turmoil. We shall look at many major factors which triggered the downturn from a different spectrum such as high levels of unemployment, the cost of living, public spending interest rates and many more. Late 1970s and early 1980 s (1979 1983) was a turbulent period in the history of United Kingdom s economy. Britain welcomed their first female prime minister when they were facing major economic volatility. 80s was the phase when UK was facing cost push inflation like a lot of other countries around the world. Due to the aftermath effects of 1970s when rising oil prices costs shifted from $3 per barrel to $12 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As we can see from the graph above UK s inflation in 1980 was 18% followed by a steep drop in 1981 of 11.90%, 8.60% in1982 and lastly 4.60% in 1983 resulting in a highly disinflated economy due to inflation rates sky rocketing which however was dealt severely by the government by decreasing budget deficit and charging higher taxes by cutting extensively on spending. The graph above demonstrates the enormous levels of unemployment during the early 1980s which put over three million people out of work in 1983 . I believe the strong decline of the trade union power in this phase resulted in deterioration of employment due to tight monetary policy with critical reasoning such as unions not having enough power to push up the wages and wage demands not meeting up to the point of ... • 7. United States V Julius Steinnberg And Julius Rosenberg And... In early March of 1951, the case United States v Julius Rosenberg, Ethel Rosenberg, and Morton Sobell argued whether the Rosenbergs planned execution should forgo or be rescinded for violating the Espionage Act of 1917 and being guilty of starting the Korean War. In the late 1940 s and early 1950 s the Cold War was ongoing, with the United States and the Soviet Union entrenched in an ongoing battle over the supremacy of the west. Paul Frazier, an author for the Magazine of History in Bloomington states, One of the most intriguing aspects of the Cold War relationship between the Americans and the Soviets was the development of vast networks of spies and counterspies (Frazier). The United States and the Soviet s relationship establishes an early conflict between the two nations, further affecting future diplomatic relations. Julius Rosenberg s sympathy towards the Soviets and anger towards the United State s current position on the world s economic stage ultimately led to his act of traitorous espionage. Michael Browning, a writer for the Palm Beach Post newspaper states, What united the Rosenbergs was a belief in communism, strengthened by the Depression and Russia s fight against Hitler during World War 2 , (Browning). The United States depression and Julius s admiration for Russia s fight against Hitler motivated him to turn against his home nation during a time of crisis. To conclude, Cold War tensions and Julius s appreciation for Soviet life and government illustrates ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Each character in this story faces their own unique trials and tribulations during the football season. At the age of three his mother moved to Oklahoma and left Boobie with his grandmother. He lived for a short time with his father, but allegations of physical abuse resulted in a lifetime of being bounced from foster home to foster home. Before Boobie started high school, his uncle, L.V. Miles, adopted him giving him a stable home and a positive role model. Influenced by his uncle, Boobie began to excel at sports, especially football. Football provided another home where Boobie got the kind of attention and admiration that led to opportunities someone from his background didn t typically get a full ride scholarship to college. He also gained a lot of attention for his attitude that was that nobody was as talented as he was. In the book Boobie is constantly quoted in the book as saying, Put Boobie in if you wanna win (Bissinger, Buzz). Next we are introduced to small offensive lineman ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Belonging Belonging is the relationship between an individual and his society, idealistically of one being in harmony with their surrounding peers and therefore becoming accepted no matter what attributes they possess. Belonging is an intrinsic need, it is a complex and variable state and in the end brings some form of happiness to an individual. The film, Strictly Ballroom , produced by Baz Luhrman, focuses upon the individual Scott who possesses the skills to win but defies the rules of the ballroom world by adding unauthorised steps and by challenging the status quo. Similarly, The short story, A Straight Bat , by Roger Holt, revolves around the individual Timothy whose individuality is suppressed by his fathers expectations. The song, ... As his father introduces to Timothy a cricket bat, Timothy s father sets the barriers of belonging towards Timothy, who is attempting to develop his own identity. Timothy s disapproval and rejection of the bat is highlighted in the short, sharp sentences and the negative connotations of the words stared , hard and heavy in the quote, Timothy stared hard at the cricket bat. It looked heavy . The negative description of the bat illustrates his objection towards the interest and values in which his father expects him to abide by. This reinforces the negativity that a sense of individuality can be removed and affected by the expectations of belonging imposed by those around us. The negative conformist nature to conform is represented through the use of the bat , symbolising the need to conform in order to feel accepted. The metaphor quoted within George s quote, Everyone must have his own bat , emphasises that each person must follow their own path in order to develop their own identity. We realise that complying by the expectations of society is the first step to acquiring acceptance. The destroying of the violin, represents Timothy s individuality and the ability to grow, is halted and depleted as the expectations of his father to play cricket, is of more priority to his son s desire. A Pundit’s Solution to Fixing Drug Violence in Mexico Essay Thomas Friedman, a biweekly column contributor for the New York Times, is a pundit who throughout his career has made some bold claims about controversial issues in the news. Bestement and Gutherson argue that a pundit is merely one who gives opinions in an authoritative manner , and that while they may speak convincingly, their skills as pundits lie in their ability... to learn quickly about the broad contours of a wide range of subjects, and to project confidence and authority in talking about them (Bestement, Gutherson 2005; 2,3). Since a pundit is one who uses existing prejudices to explain complex issues to large audiences in a concise and very generalized manner, inaccuracies are frequent in their arguments; but these inaccuracies ... It was believed that cocaine consumption by the black community could make them disregard the barriers that society had established between different races , while Chinese were portrayed as assiduous opium smokers and Mexicans were labeled as avid marihuana smokers (Recio 2002; 23,24). These faulty conceptions of the minorities in the United States resulted in a new perception...that drug consumption could not be morally accepted and therefore its use should be seriously restricted (Recio 2002; 24). Medical professionals in the United States were strongly opposed to an all out ban of these drugs, but eventually the United States congress passed the Harrison Act. This act was initially designed to limit the availability of these narcotics by requiring a prescription from a physician to obtain them. Later, United States congress passed the Volstead Act, which prohibited alcohol. In 1922 the Harrison Act became a totally prohibitionist piece of legislation (Recio 2002; 25, 26). Immediately after the Harrison Act and the Volstead Acts were passed, illegal drug traffickers took the place of physicians in providing narcotics to the people who wanted them (Recio 2002; 26). The reason for this was because my family was brought to a country that totally wiped out my ancestor s culture. The only part I understand of my family history is slavery. We started out as slaves in when first brought to America. We were originally from West Africa. We lived in places such Nigeria, Congo, and Ghana. This was a time when we owned our land and freedom. However, around the late 1500s, the western European culture had finally discovered our deeply rooted heritage. They saw that beautiful land we had nourished, They saw the love within our community. They saw the resource we provided. They realized the strength we had as a people. Soon the western Europeans felt that needed to conquer us and our land. The wanted to prove that we re able to conquer because of the more industrialized military they had. They forced my people to move to a unformal land that conquered from another culture of people. So after arrival to the new world, the European immediately forced my ancestors to change their names. They gave us our names of our slave owners. This resulted in my ancestors to being someone s property. My ancestors worked day in and day out in the hot sun; picking cotton, building houses, growing crops and being housemaids. The cyborgs are mostly machine, but still have a human brain and spinal cord, which distinguishes them from a robot. The narrator notes the difficulty in telling the difference between a cyborg and a robot, which blurs the line between humanity and artificial intelligence. Since cyborgs are part human and part machine, this shows how machines are becoming more like humans, and visa versa, since this society can consider a robot a human as long as he or she has the spinal cord and brain of a human. The line between robot and humans runs very thin, even blurred. Similarly, in Blade Runner replicants, or robots, are impossible to distinguish, unless they take an eye test. This test is shown in the first scene of the movie. During the test, a blade runner asks replicant Leon a series of questions and the blade runner monitors his pupils while Leon is answering (Scott 3). • 16. ##equality In A Dolls House And A Midsummer Night s Dream Both Henrik Ibsen s A Doll s House and Shakespeare s A Midsummer Night s Dream portray men as superior, leading to a common theme of gender inequality and discrimination within relationships. In Shakespeare s work, there is a comical aspect, downplaying the societal issue, but Ibsen s work is very dramatic, casting a more serious light on the sexual discrimination. In Ibsen s work, A Doll s House, the setting is 1879, during the Victorian Era. During this time, women were assigned to an inferior role: Stay home and attend to the children and housekeeping while the men work. This system rested on the idea that women were inferior to men, the two genders not socially nor legally equal. Nora is the primary example of a woman constricted by social role. From the very beginning of the play, it is clear that Torvald holds all of the power in the relationship. Nora is treated as a child, being called discriminating names such as spendthrift , squirrel , little lark , etc. My little songbird must never do that again. A song bird must have a clean beak to chirp with no false notes! (Ibsen 26). She is also set to a certain standard and has to obey Torvald s rules. For example, Nora is banned from eating macaroons because they will rot her teeth. Controlling what Nora may and may not eat shows just how constricted and imprisoned she really is. Not only does he control her and what she does, but he insults her as well. Torvald states, Of course! If only this obstinate little person can get her way! (Ibsen 35). Do you think I was going to let her remain there after that, and spoil the effect? (Ibsen 53). Nora is confined to the societal values that show she needs a man by her side in order to take care of her and to live. Surely you can understand that being with Torvald is a little like being with papa. (Ibsen 217). This shows that for most of Nora s life, she s been under the control of a man. She wasn t only under his control, but begged him for things like money as well, furthering her need for a man. Mrs. Linde also plays a stereotypical role, fulfilled by the happiness and service of others. I only feel my life unspeakably empty. No one to live for anymore. (Ibsen 143). Firearm registration was instituted on April 1, 1918. In October 1918, the Council of People s Commissars (the government) ordered the renunciation of all firearms, ammunition, and sabers. As has been the case in nearly every nation where firearms registration has been introduced, registration proved a preamble to confiscation. Excused from the confiscation order, however, were affiliates of the Communist Party. A 1920 decree imposed a obligatory minimum penalty of six months in prison for non Communist possession of a firearm, even where there was no felonious intent. After the Red triumph in the Civil War, the firearm laws were consolidated in a Criminal Code, which if broken, unauthorized possession of a firearm would be punishable by rigid labor. • 28. Marya Mannes How Do You Know It s Good In a world that has become immune to accepting all types of art, Marya Mannes believes we have lost our standards and ability to identify something as good or bad . In her essay, How Do You Know It s Good , she discusses society s tendency to accept everything out of fear of wrongly labelling something as being good or bad. She touches on various criteria to judge art, such as the artist s purpose, skill and craftsmanship, originality, timelessness, as well as unity within a piece rather than chaos. She says that an individual must decide if something is good on the basis of instinct, experience, and association (Mannes). I believe that by using standards and the process of association, we will be able to judge what makes an art piece good in comparison to others. However, Mannes forces me to consider the difference between what may be appealing versus what is actually good, and when deciding which art we should accept, which is truly more important. I believe that good and bad are two ends of a large, subjective spectrum of grey area. It is possible for a piece of art to be good in some areas and bad in others, and if something does not live up to all of our standards, it does not necessarily mean it should be dismissed. Thus, I believe my personal standards for judging art are based on which my standards are largely based on the personal reaction evoked from a piece of art. Though I agree with Mannes standards to an extent, I believe that certain standards, such as evoking a personal response, can be more telling of if a piece of art is good as opposed to its timelessness, or the level of experience of an artist in his/her craft. As Mannes stated, the process of association is essential in determining the quality of art, by comparing it to the other art we have seen. I am able to judge the multitexts I have read in class by using the process of association to compare them to each other. For example, we are able to judge the quality of the pieces by comparing and contrasting them to each other. All three of our multitexts used certain writing models such as analogy poems and dialogue. If someone falls and hits their head, the damage caused by that accident could cause the person to forget that the accident even occurred. (Pg. 234) For example, a friend once decided to try snowboarding, and did not learn how to stop before she went to the top of the hill. She went down, picking up speed, and did not notice the small cliff at the bottom until it was too late to turn away. We also discovered what looked like damage caused by a stroke, which had gone unnoticed by us. Before the fall, she had some difficulty remembering recent events, which was most likely caused by damage from the stroke. When she fell, more damage occurred in the same area, leaving her with Anterograde Amnesia. Both of those events damaged the part of the brain that encodes. Individuality and conformity is a battle between being a leader and being a follower, finding out who you are and your desires to be accepted by others. In Alice Munro s short story The Shining Houses and Wallace Stevens poem Disillusionment of Ten O Clock , both the author and the poet shows how being an individual is more valuable than being one of those conformed copies . Is it better to stand out and compromise your values or is it better to stay comfortable in the crowd and give into peer pressure? Unlike most of his novels, Hard Times is not based in London but in the red and black seemingly monotonous structures of Coketown. That being said, it still realistically allows the reader to observe the systems and structures of society forced to face various economic and social hardships. Back in 1896 the president of Cornell University Andrew Dickson White published a book entitled A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom. Under White s influence, the metaphor of warfare to describe the relations between science and the Christian faith became very widespread during the first half of the 20th century. The culturally dominant view in the West even among Christians came to be that science and Christianity are not allies in the search for truth, but adversaries. They were remarkably successful in pushing through their agenda. But philosophers of science during the second half of the 20th century have come to realize that the idea of a warfare between science and theology is a gross oversimplification. White s book is now regarded as something of a bad joke, a one sided and distorted piece of propaganda. Now some people acknowledge that science and religion should not be regarded as foes, but nonetheless they do not think that they should be considered friends either. They say that science and religion are mutually irrelevant, that they represent two non over lapping domains. Sometimes you hear slogans like Science deals with facts and religion deals with faith. But this is a gross caricature of both science and religion. As science probes the universe, she encounters problems and questions which are philosophical in character and therefore cannot be resolved scientifically, but which can be illuminated by a theological perspective. By the same token, it is simply false that religion makes no factual claims about the world. • 45. The Theory Of Self And Identity Essay The idea of self and identity is highly intricate, and the self can either be one of three options: the self is private, constructive, or a mixture of both. In the private viewpoint, the self is static, founded on a set number of traits, values, and dispositions that will not change with time. The constructivist theory argues that the self is changeable by nature and changes based on varying circumstances. Then, there is the mixture idea, that these separate opposing ideas are connected, as the way the self is developed and reflected upon is based on how the brain and individual thoughts develop. This is highlighted in Gopnik s statement that, Ourselves shape our brains at least as much as our brains our selves (Gopnik 2). Different people require different heroes to look up to or try to emulate. However, whoever it may be, they all possess certain qualities. My hero is my mother, for the reason that she is selfless, compassion, and courage. That kind of selflessness can often be premeditated, since concentrating on others needs often winds up helping one accomplish one s own goals. However, a heroic leader does so without any anticipation of a return. The display and concern show the care one has for others. This can often apparent itself in strong but gentle actions planned to increase the lives of others. Courage and bravery come to mind first when we think of heroism. However, it is difficult to achieve anything truly heroic unless one is up against overwhelming chances. As Nelson Mandela put it, Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.
