Female Protagonists of Detective Narratives
This essay will focus on female protagonists who are the center and driving force behind a detective
narrative. I will compare and contrast Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs and Lisbeth
Salander from The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo to explore two women that are progressive in breaking
through traditional gender roles and are successful at portraying a female that goes against the grain.
These women portray unique and progressive ideas about sexuality. Clarice and Lisbeth are two
empowered females that are successful as detectives. Usually, a female in the center of detective film
is misguided or taken advantage of because of the lack over control over their emotions. However,
Clarice and Lisabeth are two examples of women that embrace their femininity in order to get closer
to the killer. This paper will examine Clarice and Lisabeth from a post feminist perspective to prove
that these detectives are progressive in their roles.
Mulvey suggests that women are passive objects on screen that are meant to be enjoyed and looked at
at by the active male. Clarice and Slander can be seen as objects when critiquing it with just Mulveys
theory, however when looked at from a post feminist view it is clear that these women are intelligent
in their roles as detectives, and they use their sexuality to help them excel in their careers. Secondly,
Gates suggests that females as the center in a detective film become masculinized and if they do not
end up in marriage or with love,

Essay on The Future of Nursing
The Future of Nursing Ami Randall July 24, 2010 Upon considering the past and future of nursing,
many changes have already taken place, and even larger changes are expected. With the recent rate of
technological development, the heath care system is certain to follow in its advances at nearly the
same pace. Many predictions for the future of medicine are based on computerized technology. The
use of telemonitoring, video and smart houses are already being used by some companies today, and
will be utilized more frequently in the future. This will enable one nurse to care for many more
patients than he/she is capable of safely caring for currently. This is very important due to the baby
boomer generation growing older and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

how medications are systemically treating any disease process. This system will detect disease
processes much earlier than is capable at the present time. This information is then transmitted to this
global health care network, as previously mentioned, and the data used to better understand disease

computers, for the cost of around one hundred dollars. With this technology, medical professionals can
better understand why some people, and who these people are specifically, are more susceptible to
different types of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and so on. These chronic conditions and diseases will
be cured and prevented and the larger problem will be mutating viruses and super bugs , for which
pharmaceutical companies have put very little effort into developing curative or nonresistant
medications. Looking forward to contributing to these medical advances through research, I hope to

Oliver Twist Essay example
Oliver Twist
Have you ever thought about how it would be to live in a time of poverty? How would life be if you
were poor and did not know from where you would be getting your next meal? What would it be like
to be forced to live in a workhouse? These are some of the questions you might ask yourself if you
were living in early nineteenth century
England. Dickens addresses these issues in his timeless masterpiece Oliver Twist. In the story of
Oliver Twist, Dickens uses past experiences from his childhood and targets the Poor Law of 1834
which renewed the importance of the workhouse as a means of relief for the poor.

The 1840s were years of crises. The character on English life was being transformed by industrial
expansion and by great movements of population towards urban life.
Charles Dickens was born in Landport, Portsea, on February 7, 1812. He was the second son of John
Dickens. John Dickens was a clerk in the Navy pay office. His improvidence would eventually lead to
imprisonment in the Marshalsea, a debtor s prison for debt (Hardy 41). As a child Charles Dickens
explored London and the fascination that he felt for this booming city remained with him throughout
his life (Rooke 15). Dickens received his first instruction from his mother and later attended regular
schools in
Chatham. When John Dickens, his wife, and their four children went to the debtor s prison, Charles
Dickens didn t go. He soon became intimate with his father s small collection of literary classics. He
also revealed early signs of genius. Dickens recollections of early life were centered in Kent and he
often regarded himself as a member of that region (Kaste 9). Dickens was sent to work at the age of
twelve in Worren s Blacking Warehouse. After his father s release he went back to school.. When
school was complete he went to work in an attorney s office. He spent much of his time exploring the
busy and varied life of London and decided to become a journalist. He mastered a difficult system of
shorthand and by March 1832, at the age of twenty, he was a general and

Chinese Art During the Early Empire Essay
Chinese Art During the Early Empire
In this essay, I will look at the outpouring of thought, art and literature during the early empire. More
so though, I will focus on what factors led to this renewed focus on culture in the early empire. It
would seem that there were several factor which would lead to this renewed interest in culture in early
China, but the most significant of these factors would be the re establishment of a strong central
government. This re establishment of a strong central government laid the foundation for cultural
growth. It brought with it prosperity to China, through improved infrastructure, such as the canals and
graineries. As a result of these improvements, China flourished both economically, ... Show more

The Dred Scott Decision, And Abraham Lincoln
During the early 17th century slavery was being practiced in the South for over 350 years. They were
forced to work the production of tobacco, crops, and later cotton. When the cotton grin was evented in
1793 along with the growing demand product in Europe. The slaves had become a use to the South
and it formed a foundation for their economy. Going into the late 18th century there were problems
with slavery and they are the abolitionist movement, the Missouri Compromise, the Dred Scott
Decision, and Abraham Lincoln. The first issue was abolitionist movement wanted to end slavery and
that was because colonist in the North didn t want slaves to be part of the society unlike the colonist in
the South. With that going on it started to divide the country really bad, by the 1830s many settlers
was saying that slavery was a good thing and a lot of other settlers didn t believe that. As time went
the country grew worse and worse by the da, until eventually segregated by the settlers who want
slaves and who didn t, another reason would be that slaves were counted as three fifths of a vote for
the purpose of population and representation in the House of Representatives. The Constitution also
prohibited the importation of slaves that begin in 1808, but have to manage without using the words
slave or slavery. The last reason is that with the improvements of the cotton grin and the sewing
machine increased the demand of slave labor in the US especially in the South. The

Szafranski Vs Dunston Case Study
Szafranski v. Dunston, 2013 IL App (1st) 122975, 993 N.E.2d 502, 373 Ill.Dec. 196 Procedural
History Mr. Szafranski is appealing a decision made by the Circuit Court of Cook County in which the
court sided with ex girlfriend Karla Dunston concerning a dispute over the disposition of
cryopreserved pre embryos that were created when Mr. Szafranki donated his sperm and Ms. Dunston
donated her ova in light of Ms. Dunston having been diagnosed with non Hodgkin s lymphoma and
having been informed that her chemotherapy treatments would likely render her infertile. Mr.
Szafranski is asking the Appellate Court to enjoin Ms. Dunston from using those pre embryos.

Szafranski and Ms. Dunston would both be considered legal co parents of the child and that Mr.
Szafranski agrees to undertake all legal, custodial, and other obligations to the child regardless of any
changes between each party. Furthermore, the co parent agreement went on to state that any eggs
retrieved and cryopreserved as a result of the in vitro fertilization retrieval shall be under Ms. Dunston
s sole control and should the couple separate, Ms. Dunston will control the disposition of those pre
embryos. The co parent agreement was never signed yet the couple moved forward with the in vitro
fertilization. In May of 2010, Mr. Szafranski sent Ms. Dunston a text message effectively ending their
relationship and then filed a pro se complaint in the Circuit Court of Cook County three months later
seeking to permanently enjoin Ms. Dunston from using the pre embryos so he could preserve his right
to not be forced into fathering a child against his will. Mr. Szafranski argued that a man and woman
are in equal positions when it comes to cryopreserved embryos as they re not inside the woman s
body. Therefore, Mr. Szafranski argued, the constitutional right not to be a parent means the consent of
both the woman and the man is required for any sue of the pre embryos. In September

Code Literacy Should Be Mandatory
At this time, mostly all aspects of life is somehow influenced by computers. Shopping, associating,
pharmaceutical, instruction, law, diversion and more are all at any rate controlled by computers and
the web. Computers are everywhere. Not understanding the basics of how code work is like not
knowing how to change a tire. However, does everybody should learn coding? In my opinion, code
literacy should be mandatory in the first year of high school. The way that high schools teach students
how to code is willing to be showing the students how code can help the society. After first year, code
class could be optional because students may have their own ideas about studing coding or not.
In Tasneem Raja s article Is Coding the New Literay? , she mentions the way US high schools teach
about coding, the way computer science in currently taught in high school tends to throw students into
the programming deep end, reinforcing the notion that code is just for coders, not artists or doctors or
librarians. These old concepts may become a big situation for people who are about to bring code
classes into high schools. Some people only focus on code is the thing that computer programmers
need, but not from a big of view to think about code may affect society. Raja also goes on to point out,
For one thing, they ve seen that leading with computational thinking instead of code itself, and helping
students imagine how being computer savvy could help them in any career, boosts the

How to Start and Manage a Successful Business
The high failure rate of business start ups has become common knowledge over time. According to the
study by Van de Ven, Ar, Hudson, R and Schroeder (1984), the survival of a business over a short term
period of about a year and half is 54% and 25% over a period of six years. This means that the failure
rate of business start ups is a high 75%. Although studies show that business start ups have a high
failure rate, strategic business and financial planning, good management and marketing skills are
important factors to consider to avoid failure and to be a successful business. As an aspiring

stage and through the on going stages of the business. One of the main purposes of a business is to
make money; therefore, consulting with a financial planner will provide financial strategies to help the
business grow and increase revenue. The third stage in a new business start up is management. Having
good management skills are important to the success of a business. A business needs good leadership

How Does the Surface Area to Volume Ratio Affect Heat Loss...
Biology Lab Report
BY:
Michael Ryan Pranata 11C |
Background: As heat is a form of thermal energy, they tend to have the behavior of reaching a thermal
equilibrium. This means that when two bodies of different temperatures come in contact with each
other, the hotter ones will transfer heat particles to the body with a colder temperature, with an aim to
reach this thermal equilibrium , whatever the temperature may be. The larger the surface area, means
there can be more paths from the sides of the body that are capable of releasing this heat particles, and
reaching thermal equilibrium faster. This is what happens when a hotter body is subjected to a colder
one.

We observe the temperature of the four different flasks starting from the equal initial temperatures,
every ten seconds for one samples all the way to three minutes. From the data observed, the average
rate of heat loss can be derived. This is done by taking the initial and final temperature and dividing
them by the number of seconds (18x as the total number of seconds is 180 and interval of 10 secs).
Controlled: Initial temperature, type of insulation, type of flasks, room temperature, time.
1. We ve decided 77⁰C as our initial temperature for every trial. We ve kept the initial temperature
equal for each trial as this would give us fair and reliable results. If the initial temperatures were kept
different, therefore the data provided will be somewhat unreliable. This is also because as the
temperatures are higher, the rate of heat loss would be faster, as compared to when the initial
temperatures are lower. This would again support the unreliability of the data we would observe.
2. The type of insulation that we ve chosen is the cotton, approximately with the same thickness for
each flask. They will be changed for every trial, because for each trial, as the heat escapes from the
sides of the flask in the form of water vapor, it comes in contact with the cotton, thus making it moist,
and changes the capacity of the cotton to insulate. We have decided to

Persuasive Speech On Western Honey Bees
If we die, we re taking you with us.
It was a strident slogan drilled into many by everything from the 2016 Cheerios #BringBackTheBees
campaign to the Bee Movie of 2007. It seems as though everyone nowadays wants to remind us that
the bees are dying at an alarming rate, and ever since elementary we would have learned the important
role that the bees played. Without the bees, we will be doomed! But, what if I were to tell you that this
was all just not true? It has been shoved down our throats for so long now that many of us might have
lost sight of the truth, but in reality, the environment would actually be a whole lot better if the bees
just buzzed off, permanently.
Before we get too far into things, though, I would just like to point out that as of August of 2017, the

the decline of bumblebees which, to be clear, are different from Western honey bees and are the cute
little fuzzy bees most people draw when they think of a bee because of the diseases they are spreading
through their colonies. Diseases such as deformed wing virus, which honey bees have a higher chance
to get, is the exact same strain in both species. So, once again, I repeat: honey bees are considered one
of the likeliest sources of at least one major emerging infectious disease to wild pollinators. When
researchers were looking into the impact that honey bees were having on the bumblebee population,
they concluded the following: Given the available evidence, it is likely that pathogen spillover from
commercial bees is contributing to the ongoing decline of wild Bombus [bumblebees] in North

Creating Robots for a Universal Purpos
There are over 8.6 million robots in the world that have been created for a universal purpose. That
purpose is to improve human life. They do this in many different ways like for example; Robots are
used in the Auto Industry to help build automobiles on assembly lines. It takes around twenty four
hours on average to build a new automobile in a factory with the help of these robots. Without the
machinery that is being used on these assembly lines it could take anywhere from three days to a week
to build one automobile. That would also affect the price of said automobile and make it harder to
purchase automobiles. Robots help improve many more functions in everyday life. The purpose of this
project is to prove that robots improve upon human life and that the robots should be used more often.
The first robot was hand built in between four hundred and three hundred fifty B.C. The inventor of
the robot was mathematician Archytas. The robot functioned as a steam powered pigeon. The robot
actually worked and at one point flew two hundred meters before it ran out of steam and landed on the
ground. The robot was not very helpful. But it at the time was a great sign of what was to come in the
future. The latest robots to be created are unrecognizable compared to this very first model.
Robots are used every day in countries across the world in assembly lines. An assembly line is a series
of workers and machines in a factory by which a succession of identical items is progressively

Self Discovery In Emil Sinclair s Max Demian
Emil Sinclair does not fully achieve his quest for self discovery, but he does develop along that path
and gains the tools and experiences necessary for the achievement of his quest, post novel. The main
manner through which he develops along this path is through interactions with the character who gives
his name to the title; Max Demian. At the start of the novel, Sinclair restricts what he views as
acceptable conduct to the realm of light and righteousness, (4) the realm of his parents, sisters, school
and church. However, Sinclair is tempted to cross into the other realm, the realm characterized by
darkness and perceived sin, stating, There were times when I actually preferred living in the forbidden

Sinclair transcend and surpass those offered by both Demian and Pistorius, chiefly because Eva
provides Sinclair with an target for ceaseless affection, a target at whom to direct his will and desires.
This emphasizes the most crucial portion of Demian s development, the push from his mentors to
explore his personal urges and desires regardless of their adherence or, more commonly, lack thereof
to what is societally acceptable. This is the most important piece of Sinclair s development due to its
fairly radical nature. For instance, Pistorius teachings advise Sinclair how to think regardless of
conformity to society, while Eva s advice teaches Sinclair how to act without regard to conformity to
societal norms. The step taught by Pistorius is a relatively easy one to take, but individuals in society
have a significantly more difficult time acting on those controversial thoughts than simply thinking

I had consumed a vast quantity of these nutrients during my three day period.
Keeping in range your micronutrient is very important, the range provides a guide to a well balanced
nutrition in which you should not exceed the recommended ratios in order not to create excess energy
in thus converting to fat. The lack of micronutrients is also important to keep in mind. Lack of these
nutrients can cause malnutrition that can lead to disease complexity disorder and long term damage to
your organs.
If you constantly eat too little protein you will start to lose muscle complexity due to that proteins are
the building blocks of muscle. If you deprive yourself of proteins and there is a lack of energy your
body will start taking energy from your muscles. If you consume too little carbohydrates you re
depriving yourself of necessary nutrients in whole grain foods and vegetables, some of the
consequences are digestive difficulties, decreased energy and heart disease.
When you eat too few lipids sources in your diet, you may not get enough essential fatty acids, which

Intro Thesis
In our society people interact with the banking industry everyday. As of 2014 the industry had
revenues of $426 billion (IBIS, 2014). Monetary policy effects how citizens and corporations
approach the economy. Banks have the ability to influence monetary decision making of each
individual causing change in the state of the economy. Following is a discussion of how banks affect
behavior of people in the economy.
Role in the Market
Banks play a huge role in the market. Their monetary policies can increase or decrease the amount of
spending in the economy. The Federal Reserve Bank, the United States central bank, has the most
power of all banks. It is considered to be the bank s bank. It was established by an act of congress in
1913, which created the Federal Reserve System. This system regulates the banks in the economy.
Since the Fed has so much control its policies directly influence all banks. This is typically steered by
the interest rates.
What Causes Interest Rates to Fluctuate? As stated before interest rates are influenced by many
different factors, bank rates in general, follow policy changes, bank rates also change in response to
market conditions, independently of changes in the official target rates (Lim, 2013). For example the
financial crisis in 2008, caused by the housing market, resulted in tight credit conditions and high
interest rates.

Emotive Presence Inventory
III. Description of Instrument Of the big three questionnaires within presence measurement, the ITC
SOPI displays greater methodological concern can at all levels of its development than both the SUS
and the PQ. Its use of factor analysis post experimentation on a sample of much higher variability (in
both age and SES) and nearly quadruple in number to its nearest competitor provides the instrument
with considerable statistical power (Lessiter, Keogh, Davidoff, 2001). However, of the 13 initial
content areas from which all items and eventually the 4 primary factors were drawn (sense of space,
involvement, attention, distraction, control and manipulation, realness, naturalness, perception of time,
awareness of behavioral responses, sense of social interaction, personal relevance, arousal, and
negative effects) , one content area important to common conceptualizations of presence was lacking:
emotional investment. (Lessiter, Keogh, Davidoff, 2001). The PQ contains items related to the
emotional investment of VEs (item number 3, 23, 25, and 26) that were shown to positively correlate
with total PQ score (Witmer Singer, 1998). I make no claim that emotional investment is somehow
central to concept of presence; it seems clearly demonstrable that more mundane acts of presence, like
driving a car, require no emotional investment from an agent. However, a small amount of support
exists in both the literature and the common understanding of the term to be worth

Analysis Of Homer s The King Of The Great Land
A murderer. A liar. A philander. A Narcissist. Is this the kind of man children should model after as
their hero? The Ancient Greek poem The Odyssey by Greek poet Homer, tells the story of great
Odysseus, the king of Ithaca who was sent off to fight in war for ten years, and his long journey home.
After the war, Odysseus showed that he was not the leader and king that his crew had thought. For
instance, Odysseus showed many more remarkable character flaws, such as continual disrespect to the
Gods and men, his very self centered way of life, and his many crimes committed during the entirety
of the story. This protagonist of our epic story and the king of the great land of Ithaca, is by no means
a hero in the modern definition of the word. To elaborate, Homer describes the life of Telemachus
before he focuses in on Odysseus. Before introducing Odysseus, Homer shows the life of a prince who
was brought up to be a leader and to rule a kingdom. In fact, the story starts out with young
Telemachus restraining himself from doing the very things in which his father finds no shame.
Daydreaming so as he sat among the suitors, he glimpsed Athena now and straight to the porch he
went, mortified that a guest might still be standing at the doors (Homer 1.138). To clarify, Telemachus
represents the positive and virtuous family he was brought up under by demonstrating his respect for
the Ancient Greek laws of hospitality. In addition, Telemachus does not openly disrespect the suitors

Compare And Contrast Orzco And Frida Kahlo
A while back my uncle took my brother and me to a trip to the Museum of Contemporary of Art in
San Diego. However, on that day, the museum had an event of Mexican heritage artist. I do not
remember exactly all the details on that day, but fortunately, I do remember one painting I was able to
remember, the Flower Seller. At the time, I could not understand why the picture had impact me and
was the only one I can remember well. When I was young, I thought the young girl was decorating,
but now I doubt she was decorating it. Today, I do not know what the girl is doing anymore. Is she
about to carry it? What is in the background? Is she in a market or a field? And why is it that I
remember this painting so well?
Not only have I seen Rivera s painting but also another Mexican artist, for example; Jose Clemente
Orozco and Frida Kahlo. I saw their paintings at the Museum of Art in San Diego. I cannot remember
what pictures I have seen on that day last time I saw it. One of the things I realize is the way they
represent their art. They express their past and their present, the rich culture of the Mexican history,
the way they express their ideology and their political view of their time, and their surrealist dream in
case of Frida Kahlo. One of the remarkable ways they express is by putting their expression on the

Essay On American Flag Desecration
The Constitution of the United States of America is something that all Americans value greatly; it
protects our basic human rights by forbidding the government of violating them. Recently, there has
been much discussion about a possible violation of said rights, specifically creating a law to ban the
desecration of the American flag. President elect Donald Trump recently stated his opinion on social
media about the issue, however he proposed inconceivable punishments for the action. This issue of
desecrating the American flag is deeply rooted in American history, including multiple Supreme Court
decisions.
The Supreme Court has twice ruled that the desecration of the American flag was a form of free
speech and is protected by the first amendment. The first Amendment states, Congress shall make no
law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the
freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the
Government for a redress of grievances. The constitution clearly states that the people have the rights

Donald Trump stated in a recent tweet, Nobody should be allowed to burn the American flag if they
do, there must be consequences perhaps loss of citizenship or year in jail! This statement is completely
offensive and baffling for various reasons. Being that the Supreme Court has ruled that desecrating the
flag is legal and an expression of speech, Trump certainly should not be giving such consequences for
something that is entirely legal. If flag burning were to become illegal, a loss of citizenship and a year
in jail would be extremely harsh and an unreasonable punishment, perhaps instead a less excessive
punishment such as a small

should provide an easy tutorials or experience to learners. So that learners could learn about the rules

The learners should be allowed to choose their own game partners to place on a personalized

shown the five scores above and the below one score of a learner. However, the learners should be
allowed to access to the top scores openly. Levels and badges should be used appropriately to guide
learners. The learners should be guided with linear content and tie every level to achieve a specific

Analysis Of Virginia Woolf s Mrs. Dalloway
A key belief within our society is that there are many sides to any story, and to gain full understanding,
one more confront and engage with all aspects. There are instances, however, when the scope of the
story makes the full truth unattainable. This is the case of World War I. The Great War was nearly
impossible to understand while it was taking place, and although nearly one hundred years have
passed, little concrete clarity has been achieved regarding the overall truths and experiences of this
war. Claire Tylee, a historian who focuses on the woman s role in World War I, highlights the ineffable
aspect of the war even for the most skilled authors, saying that: reviewing a novel in 1917, Virginia
Woolf suggested that the War was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And the war goes on, indifferent to these human actions, meaningless, destructive, and apparently
endless (Hynes, 127). This was a war that touched every aspect of human life, even diluting something
as pure as love. Living with another but in internal isolation became extremely common because: all
wars divide divide not only our side from theirs, but soldiers from civilians, men from women, one
generation from another, war lovers from war haters. These divisions don t end with the war s last
shot: they continue into the following years... (Hynes, 337). The Great War created a new kind of love
story, thus reflecting the truths and lasting impacts on all corners of society. After this war, the
previous perception of love was no longer attainable, as each individual lived in the harsh reality
brought upon by extreme isolation of experience.
The climate upon returning home can be understood by observing the strain in even the closest
relationships, thus showing the isolation endured within society. Since Septimus and Rezia met during
wartime, their relationship fit within the context of chaos, so when placed in a quiet city, the
relationship that they had built crumbled. This partially was due to inconsistency in experience, as it
was impossible to understand what someone else had gone through. Septimus, for example, had lost
his best friend and lover in battle, yet had never let himself confront these feelings. Rezia, on the other

A Series Of Biochemical Tests
A series of biochemical tests were conducted in order to determine the identity of an unknown gram
negative bacterium. The unknown had the potential to be one of six different gram negative bacteria:
Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter aerogenes, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella
pneumonia, or Salmonella typhirmurium. After using the T streak method to isolate pure colonies and
confirming the gram negative nature of the unknown bacterium the unknown was subjected to seven
biochemical tests and the results compared to the results of the six known bacteria for the same tests.
After performing the Triple Sugar Iron Agar Test, Sulfur Indole Motility Test, Methyl Red Test, Voges
Proskauer Test, Citrate Test, Urease Test, and Gelatin Test it was confirmed that identity of Unknown
#15 was Salmonella typhirmurium.
While all bacteria retain basic qualities identifying them as prokaryotes they do not function, grow, or
even metabolize in the same way. These differences distinguish bacterial species from one another,
like a thumb print identifies a single individual from every other person on earth. Testing for these
unique factors through a series of biochemical tests and staining techniques allows for an unknown
bacterial strain s thumb print to be generated. From there the unknown s thumb print can be compared
to the thumb print of known bacterial species allowing for identification.
The first step in identification is performing a Gram Stain. Due to the fact

Refractive Eye Surgery Essay
Introduction
Light is part of the electromagnetic spectrum and travels in waves. The electromagnetic
spectrum consists of many other forms of radiation including: radio waves, microwaves, infrared
waves, ultraviolet rays, x rays, and gamma rays (Sandner, 2009). Humans are only capable of
seeing the visible spectrum of light and some even have difficulties with that. However, with
technology taking a turn, many new inventions have come into existence that can help many
parts of the body, including the eyes. Optical devices/processes help us see farther and more
clearly than we can with unaided eyes (Sandner, 2009). One of these optical devices/processes is
laser vision correction. For most people with vision problems, this brand of surgery looks very
appealing to them, which can decrease or even eliminate dependency on glasses and contact
lenses (Sandner, 2009). However, there are also risks that come along with them, and those risks
can be very dangerous.
Background Research
Types of Refractive Eye Surgery
Laser vision correction consists of different types including, but not limited to: LASIK,
LASEK, PRK, and ALK. Each type of surgery is executed for different purposes such as near
sightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. According to MedicineNet.com (nd), all types of
refractive eye surgery involve the reshaping of the cornea or clearing the front part of the eye so
that light can travel through onto the retina properly focused.

Essay on Atheism
Informative Speech
Atheism
Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about Atheism, why it important as well as the fundamental
elements of being a part of it. I will discuss what Atheism is, how it originated, and the number of
people who practice this religion.
Central Idea: What is Atheism? Who? When? Where? And Why!?
Organizational Pattern: Topical
Introduction
Forrester Church once said, Religion is the human response to being alive and having to die. In
Christianity when one dies, a glorious heaven awaits them, where they will be adorned with beautiful
wings, a shining halo, and all of their loved ones will be with them. Atheism, on the other hand, leaves
the question of afterlife open, which can be a frightening ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With that definition, most people do not view Atheism as a religion. But as Reverend Bill McGinnis
states, If black is a color, then Atheism is a religion. Black is defined as the total absence of color,
however it is still considered a color. Likewise, even though Atheism is the belief in no Gods, it is still
defined as a religion because of the practice, values, and purpose.
So what is Atheism? It is zero religious affiliation what so ever, a complete rejection and disbelief in
any sort of God or Gods and religious documents.
Traditions, requirements, or boundaries are of a complete absence. Atheists are free to practice any
sort of spiritual healing imaginable as long as they do not answer, ask, pray, or plead to any form of
divine being.)
Moreover, religious documents are viewed as fiction. The Bible, especially, is seen as impossible for
Atheists to relate to or form any kind of scientific reasoning for our creation on Earth. Atheists focus
their attention on human doubt and science breakthroughs. Beliefs like evolution, natural selection,
and other scientific opinions are considered because of their factual foundations.
According to John Stuart, author of The Natural History of Atheism, Atheism originated in the 16th
century by the French. The Greek term Atheos meaning without Gods was

The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas Summary
My Review on: The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas
The story opens with a description of Setting up a city, followed by narration of real or imaginary
events. This tale won the Hugo Award for Best Story of 1974, which is offered annually for a science
fiction or fantasy story, considered a classic of the science fiction genre. His premise is based on a
moral dilemma, posed by the philosopher William James, who imagined what would be a hideous
happiness if it depended on the suffering of a child, a story that can be interpreted as a political
allegory. There are those who say that the child who lives in misery under the city represents the
inferior or working class, who supports the upper class with poorly paid labor. Thus, the story can ...

The narrator says I think and I think it should exist, instead of telling the reader what it is. Asking if
the reader believes what he says about the festival, The Narrator of The Ones Who Walk Away from
Omelas can not
tell a direct tale. The story about the summer festival is diverted to a brief treatise on happiness, what
happiness really is and how the citizens of Omelas succeeded. The scene is like a joyful and luxurious
fairy tale with a cry of bells and the swallows growing up. Soon after, the narrator tries to explain the
antecedents of such a happy place, although it becomes clear that he or she does not know all the
details about the city. Instead, she invites readers to imagine the details that correspond to them,
insisting that it does not matter, as you like. Then the story returns to a description of the festival, with
all its flowers and pastries and flutes and children with nymphs competing with the horses. It seems
too good to be true, and the narrator asks, Do you believe? Do you accept the festival, the city, the
joy? The narrator repeatedly mentions that he does not know all the details of Omelas. rules and laws
of your society, and imagine that there would be no cars or helicopters not because you know for sure,
but because you do not think cars and helicopters are consistent with happiness, it also states that the
details do not really matter, and use the second

Lady With The Dog
n The Lady with the Dog, Chekhov uses setting to enhance the mood of the story. The story begins on
the coastal town of Yalta during the hot summer. The strange light on the sea, the soft warm lilac hue
of the water and the golden streak from the moon upon it sets the tone for a budding summer romance.
The fact that the two main characters first meeting takes place in a garden setting signifies a love
about to bloom. Chekhov also uses the season/weather in his story. The summer in Yalta is the start of
a hopefully steamy affair for Gurov and the lady with the white Pomeranian. They spend a lot of time
walking, talking and dining together and taking in the smell of the sea. They watch the steamers go by.

As June travels on a train to Guangzhou with her father, she notices the tears of happiness in his eyes
as he looks out the window and sees a sectioned field of yellow, green and brown under the hot
October sky. Like Chekhov, Tan uses the season of autumn to establish the change the reader will see
in Jane s character. In autumn, there is a beautiful array of color changes. For Jane, this particular
autumn, spent briefly in China, and the colors outside the train window represent a transformation.
She is returning to her roots. She is going home to discover that her mother was right all along. The
colors in the field represent the change that is about to happen in Jane. Yellow, the color of the sun,
brings hope and happiness to the new day. The field of green represents new growth. Jane is on a
journey that will help her grow as a person. The brown field is just as important as the others. It is the
last one she notices looking out the train window as she arrives closer to Guangzhou and her roots.
Setting also shapes the conflict within Jane. Is Chinese really in her blood or is she an All American
girl? I think about what my mother said, about activating my genes and becoming Chinese. And I
wonder what she meant. As people are pushing and shoving to get off the train and wait in line for
customs,

grow in India.
2.3 Social/Culture Factor
When it comes to the Social factors, population, income distribution, social mobility, lifestyle, attitude
towards work and leisure, and education level are detailed elements of Social factors. For Cochlear,
attitude towards healthcare among the society is the main influencing factor. In developing countries
like India and South East Asia, the average healthcare awareness is low. To prove this, we only need to
quote words from Chundu, Manchaiah, Stephens and Kumar (2013), it appears that parentally
reported outcomes could be related to many factors including the hearing healthcare system with the
costs involved for the implanted individuals and their families . As a countermeasure, according to the
Economic Times (2010), Cochlear Limited will spend up to 15 million in India, to increase awareness.
Additionally, the Social factors are often described as culture difference. Cochlear used localization of
the communication strategy to deal with culture difference: In Europe, it cooperated with Loud Group
and designed a comprehensive program of Public Relationship, which included traditional media,
broadcast, activity, and on line DeafBlog. While in Cuba, it linked itself with Cuban Revolution s

  • 2. Female Protagonists of Detective Narratives This essay will focus on female protagonists who are the center and driving force behind a detective narrative. I will compare and contrast Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs and Lisbeth Salander from The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo to explore two women that are progressive in breaking through traditional gender roles and are successful at portraying a female that goes against the grain. These women portray unique and progressive ideas about sexuality. Clarice and Lisbeth are two empowered females that are successful as detectives. Usually, a female in the center of detective film is misguided or taken advantage of because of the lack over control over their emotions. However, Clarice and Lisabeth are two examples of women that embrace their femininity in order to get closer to the killer. This paper will examine Clarice and Lisabeth from a post feminist perspective to prove that these detectives are progressive in their roles. Mulvey suggests that women are passive objects on screen that are meant to be enjoyed and looked at at by the active male. Clarice and Slander can be seen as objects when critiquing it with just Mulveys theory, however when looked at from a post feminist view it is clear that these women are intelligent in their roles as detectives, and they use their sexuality to help them excel in their careers. Secondly, Gates suggests that females as the center in a detective film become masculinized and if they do not end up in marriage or with love, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay on The Future of Nursing The Future of Nursing Ami Randall July 24, 2010 Upon considering the past and future of nursing, many changes have already taken place, and even larger changes are expected. With the recent rate of technological development, the heath care system is certain to follow in its advances at nearly the same pace. Many predictions for the future of medicine are based on computerized technology. The use of telemonitoring, video and smart houses are already being used by some companies today, and will be utilized more frequently in the future. This will enable one nurse to care for many more patients than he/she is capable of safely caring for currently. This is very important due to the baby boomer generation growing older and the ... • 4. Oliver Twist Essay example Oliver Twist Have you ever thought about how it would be to live in a time of poverty? How would life be if you were poor and did not know from where you would be getting your next meal? What would it be like to be forced to live in a workhouse? These are some of the questions you might ask yourself if you were living in early nineteenth century England. Dickens addresses these issues in his timeless masterpiece Oliver Twist. In the story of Oliver Twist, Dickens uses past experiences from his childhood and targets the Poor Law of 1834 which renewed the importance of the workhouse as a means of relief for the poor. The character on English life was being transformed by industrial expansion and by great movements of population towards urban life. Charles Dickens was born in Landport, Portsea, on February 7, 1812. He was the second son of John Dickens. John Dickens was a clerk in the Navy pay office. His improvidence would eventually lead to imprisonment in the Marshalsea, a debtor s prison for debt (Hardy 41). As a child Charles Dickens explored London and the fascination that he felt for this booming city remained with him throughout his life (Rooke 15). Dickens received his first instruction from his mother and later attended regular schools in Chatham. When John Dickens, his wife, and their four children went to the debtor s prison, Charles Dickens didn t go. He soon became intimate with his father s small collection of literary classics. He also revealed early signs of genius. Dickens recollections of early life were centered in Kent and he often regarded himself as a member of that region (Kaste 9). Dickens was sent to work at the age of twelve in Worren s Blacking Warehouse. After his father s release he went back to school.. When school was complete he went to work in an attorney s office. He spent much of his time exploring the busy and varied life of London and decided to become a journalist. More so though, I will focus on what factors led to this renewed focus on culture in the early empire. It would seem that there were several factor which would lead to this renewed interest in culture in early China, but the most significant of these factors would be the re establishment of a strong central government. With that going on it started to divide the country really bad, by the 1830s many settlers was saying that slavery was a good thing and a lot of other settlers didn t believe that. As time went the country grew worse and worse by the da, until eventually segregated by the settlers who want slaves and who didn t, another reason would be that slaves were counted as three fifths of a vote for the purpose of population and representation in the House of Representatives. The co parent agreement was never signed yet the couple moved forward with the in vitro fertilization. Shopping, associating, pharmaceutical, instruction, law, diversion and more are all at any rate controlled by computers and the web. Computers are everywhere. Not understanding the basics of how code work is like not knowing how to change a tire. However, does everybody should learn coding? In my opinion, code literacy should be mandatory in the first year of high school. The way that high schools teach students how to code is willing to be showing the students how code can help the society. After first year, code class could be optional because students may have their own ideas about studing coding or not. In Tasneem Raja s article Is Coding the New Literay? , she mentions the way US high schools teach about coding, the way computer science in currently taught in high school tends to throw students into the programming deep end, reinforcing the notion that code is just for coders, not artists or doctors or librarians. These old concepts may become a big situation for people who are about to bring code classes into high schools. Some people only focus on code is the thing that computer programmers need, but not from a big of view to think about code may affect society. Raja also goes on to point out, For one thing, they ve seen that leading with computational thinking instead of code itself, and helping students imagine how being computer savvy could help them in any career, boosts the ... • 13. How Does the Surface Area to Volume Ratio Affect Heat Loss... Biology Lab Report BY: Michael Ryan Pranata 11C | Background: As heat is a form of thermal energy, they tend to have the behavior of reaching a thermal equilibrium. This means that when two bodies of different temperatures come in contact with each other, the hotter ones will transfer heat particles to the body with a colder temperature, with an aim to reach this thermal equilibrium , whatever the temperature may be. The larger the surface area, means there can be more paths from the sides of the body that are capable of releasing this heat particles, and reaching thermal equilibrium faster. This is what happens when a hotter body is subjected to a colder one. Research Question: How does the surface area to volume ratio ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We observe the temperature of the four different flasks starting from the equal initial temperatures, every ten seconds for one samples all the way to three minutes. From the data observed, the average rate of heat loss can be derived. This is done by taking the initial and final temperature and dividing them by the number of seconds (18x as the total number of seconds is 180 and interval of 10 secs). Controlled: Initial temperature, type of insulation, type of flasks, room temperature, time. 1. We ve decided 77⁰C as our initial temperature for every trial. We ve kept the initial temperature equal for each trial as this would give us fair and reliable results. If the initial temperatures were kept different, therefore the data provided will be somewhat unreliable. This is also because as the temperatures are higher, the rate of heat loss would be faster, as compared to when the initial temperatures are lower. • 14. Persuasive Speech On Western Honey Bees If we die, we re taking you with us. It was a strident slogan drilled into many by everything from the 2016 Cheerios #BringBackTheBees campaign to the Bee Movie of 2007. It seems as though everyone nowadays wants to remind us that the bees are dying at an alarming rate, and ever since elementary we would have learned the important role that the bees played. Without the bees, we will be doomed! But, what if I were to tell you that this was all just not true? It has been shoved down our throats for so long now that many of us might have lost sight of the truth, but in reality, the environment would actually be a whole lot better if the bees just buzzed off, permanently. Before we get too far into things, though, I would just like to point out that as of August of 2017, the United States ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There have even been other studies which revealed that the Western honey bees have contributed to the decline of bumblebees which, to be clear, are different from Western honey bees and are the cute little fuzzy bees most people draw when they think of a bee because of the diseases they are spreading through their colonies. Diseases such as deformed wing virus, which honey bees have a higher chance to get, is the exact same strain in both species. So, once again, I repeat: honey bees are considered one of the likeliest sources of at least one major emerging infectious disease to wild pollinators. When researchers were looking into the impact that honey bees were having on the bumblebee population, they concluded the following: Given the available evidence, it is likely that pathogen spillover from commercial bees is contributing to the ongoing decline of wild Bombus [bumblebees] in North ... • 15. Creating Robots for a Universal Purpos There are over 8.6 million robots in the world that have been created for a universal purpose. That purpose is to improve human life. They do this in many different ways like for example; Robots are used in the Auto Industry to help build automobiles on assembly lines. It takes around twenty four hours on average to build a new automobile in a factory with the help of these robots. Without the machinery that is being used on these assembly lines it could take anywhere from three days to a week to build one automobile. That would also affect the price of said automobile and make it harder to purchase automobiles. Robots help improve many more functions in everyday life. The purpose of this project is to prove that robots improve upon human life and that the robots should be used more often. The first robot was hand built in between four hundred and three hundred fifty B.C. The inventor of the robot was mathematician Archytas. The robot functioned as a steam powered pigeon. The robot actually worked and at one point flew two hundred meters before it ran out of steam and landed on the ground. The robot was not very helpful. But it at the time was a great sign of what was to come in the future. The latest robots to be created are unrecognizable compared to this very first model. Robots are used every day in countries across the world in assembly lines. At the start of the novel, Sinclair restricts what he views as acceptable conduct to the realm of light and righteousness, (4) the realm of his parents, sisters, school and church. This emphasizes the most crucial portion of Demian s development, the push from his mentors to explore his personal urges and desires regardless of their adherence or, more commonly, lack thereof to what is societally acceptable. This is the most important piece of Sinclair s development due to its fairly radical nature. For instance, Pistorius teachings advise Sinclair how to think regardless of conformity to society, while Eva s advice teaches Sinclair how to act without regard to conformity to societal norms. The step taught by Pistorius is a relatively easy one to take, but individuals in society have a significantly more difficult time acting on those controversial thoughts than simply thinking ... Banks have the ability to influence monetary decision making of each individual causing change in the state of the economy. Following is a discussion of how banks affect behavior of people in the economy. Role in the Market Banks play a huge role in the market. Their monetary policies can increase or decrease the amount of spending in the economy. The Federal Reserve Bank, the United States central bank, has the most power of all banks. It is considered to be the bank s bank. It was established by an act of congress in 1913, which created the Federal Reserve System. This system regulates the banks in the economy. Since the Fed has so much control its policies directly influence all banks. This is typically steered by the interest rates. What Causes Interest Rates to Fluctuate? The PQ contains items related to the emotional investment of VEs (item number 3, 23, 25, and 26) that were shown to positively correlate with total PQ score (Witmer Singer, 1998). I make no claim that emotional investment is somehow central to concept of presence; it seems clearly demonstrable that more mundane acts of presence, like driving a car, require no emotional investment from an agent. • 20. Analysis Of Homer s The King Of The Great Land A murderer. A liar. A philander. A Narcissist. Is this the kind of man children should model after as their hero? The Ancient Greek poem The Odyssey by Greek poet Homer, tells the story of great Odysseus, the king of Ithaca who was sent off to fight in war for ten years, and his long journey home. After the war, Odysseus showed that he was not the leader and king that his crew had thought. For instance, Odysseus showed many more remarkable character flaws, such as continual disrespect to the Gods and men, his very self centered way of life, and his many crimes committed during the entirety of the story. This protagonist of our epic story and the king of the great land of Ithaca, is by no means a hero in the modern definition of the word. To elaborate, Homer describes the life of Telemachus before he focuses in on Odysseus. Before introducing Odysseus, Homer shows the life of a prince who was brought up to be a leader and to rule a kingdom. In fact, the story starts out with young Telemachus restraining himself from doing the very things in which his father finds no shame. Daydreaming so as he sat among the suitors, he glimpsed Athena now and straight to the porch he went, mortified that a guest might still be standing at the doors (Homer 1.138). President elect Donald Trump recently stated his opinion on social media about the issue, however he proposed inconceivable punishments for the action. This issue of desecrating the American flag is deeply rooted in American history, including multiple Supreme Court decisions. The Supreme Court has twice ruled that the desecration of the American flag was a form of free speech and is protected by the first amendment. The first Amendment states, Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. After using the T streak method to isolate pure colonies and confirming the gram negative nature of the unknown bacterium the unknown was subjected to seven biochemical tests and the results compared to the results of the six known bacteria for the same tests.
