Biblical Allusions to The Grapes of Wrath Essay example
Biblical Allusions to The Grapes of Wrath
John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California, on February 27, 1902. He studied marine
biology at Stanford University and then traveled east on a freighter through the Panama Canal.
Steinbeck went to New York to work as a newspaper reporter but soon returned to California and
held a variety of jobs while he wrote. Steinbeck published Tortilla Flat in 1935, Of Mice and Men
in 1937, and The Red Pony in 1937, which established his reputation as a forceful writer. In 1939
he wrote The Grapes of Wrath, which summoned up the despair and hardship of the early 1930 s.
John Steinbeck died in 1968. The Grapes of Wrath is a story about one family s hardship during the
Depression and the Dust Bowl of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Above all it showed everyone that these damn Okies were all simply men, women, and children,
no different from anyone else, just poorer (Frohock 133). They were human beings with feelings
and not the uncivilized beasts they were portrayed as at the time. John Steinbeck carefully molded
his story The Grapes of Wrath to encompass many themes and ideas. To help enforce his message
Steinbeck included several Biblical allusions. John Steinbeck uses Biblical allusions to create the
theme that strength to survive comes from faith by using characters and events. Steinbeck creates
the theme of the novel by alluding the characters in his story to characters in the Bible. Jim Casy is
an allusion to Jesus Christ. They have the same initials and live their lives as examples of their
beliefs: Jesus to the world as Casy is to Tom (Rombold 149). Casy even compares himself to
Christ when he says, I got tired like Him, an I got mixed up like Him, an I went into the
wilderness like Him, without no campin stuff (105). In the first half of the book Casy is
thinking and forming his ideas. He changes from a thinker to a man of action when he sacrifices
himself for Tom (Slade 242). When in prison Casy sees the advantage of organizing people to
achieve a common goal. When Casy tried to put his ideas into action he, like Christ, aroused the
antagonism of the people in authority and was brutally killed. He died, like Christ saying to his
crucifiers,

The Chicago Teachers Union And Chicago Public Schools
Georgis, Donnell, Mike, Moose
For the second time in almost 4 years, over 350,000 Chicago Public School Students may not be
able to go to school because of the CTU Strike that is currently in progress today (The Washington
Post). The issue between the Chicago Teachers Union and Chicago Public Schools has not been
solved yet due to disagreements about the income received. The Chicago Teachers Union has made
offers to school administrations; however, the responses were not in their favor. The union has
been in progress of agreeing on a contract since November 2011, [and the strike that occurred at
the time] was the first to hit the Windy City in 25 years (Liebelson). The issue must have erupted
due to a misconception or a realization of problems occurring. Chicago Teachers Union choosing
to strike does not affect charter schools since they are not a part of Chicago Public Schools. The
issue of school strikes can be fixed by increasing the budgets and providing useful resources to
teachers in order to improve the level of education.
The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) Strike in 2012 affected every single Chicago Public School
and their Students in 2012. The strike affected about 600 public schools which is over 350, 000
students. The CTU began negotiating their contract with CPS in November of 2011, but their
demands were not met. Since the negotiating did not solve the issue, the Chicago Teachers Union
chose to organize a strike for the first time in Chicago in 25 years.

American Nieto Negotiations
Nos faltan 43 , a statement that will forever remind every mexican of the presidency of one of the
worst rated presidents in recent history, Enrique PeГ±a Nieto. When he took office in December
of 2012, his approval rating was of 54%. Not the worst but pretty good, taking into account that he
d been elected from a fierce field of candidates with approximately 38% of the vote. The reform
candidate of the discernible PRI, Partido Revolucionario Institucional (Institutional Revolutionary
party), assured its people that he would address the country s issues focusing on the economy and
safety of the mexican states. A difficult task trusted to a president who is heavily suspected of

Something evident due to the fact that the mexican peso has devalued to 65.15% against the dollar
since the beginning of PeГ±a Nieto s term. A big downfall compared to the administration of Felipe
CalderГіn Hinojosa and Vicente Fox Quesada, Mexico s previous presidents. Many things have
caused this, but the most recent and impactful event was when Donald Trump won the election.
Trump s views on illegal immigration and his stance on renegotiating the North American Free
Trade Agreement or NAFTA really shook the mexican peso out of control. This to the point of
breaking the unnerving barrier of 20 pesos per dollar. To put this into perspective, when I was
about twelve years old a dollar was worth ten pesos. This severely affected the mexican people
and many daily necessities would increase in price. The bus and metro prices would increase by
20% severely affecting many of the working class. Groceries and other goods would also increase

The Digital Of Digital Forensics
With advances in digital technology, the scope of digital crimes has also increased multi fold.
Digital forensics is a science, which involves collection, preservation and documentation of the
digital evidence from various digital storage media. This entire process must be undertaken in
fashion that is appropriate forensically, and results in collection of data, which can be made
admissible in a court of law during the investigation of a crime. Since most of the transactions today
happen across digitalmedia, it is imperative that organizations world over understand the
fundamentals of forensics, and also take steps in training their employees. If such procedures are
not put in place, then it may result in the data of an organization to... Show more content on

The branch of Network forensics is relatively a newer branch of digital forensics, and it involves
carefully analyzing the data that is flowing in a network to find any possible evidences of
intrusion or theft. The information flow in a network is always dynamic in nature, and thus this
branch of digital forensics needs to be proactive in its approach. One of the usage of this branch
lies in the investigation of network data for any traffic that might seem anomalous in nature, for
the purpose of detecting intrusions. The second usage lies in the area of law enforcement, where
the evidence gathered by Network Forensics can be used as evidence in case of a crime. Mobile
Device Forensics relates to data and evidence recovery from a mobile device, be it a mobile
phone, PDA, tablet, GPS device, and so on. This area of forensics is a bit challenging due to the
reason that exact pin pointing of location where from communication was initiated is not accurately
possible. Other factors adding to the challenge are the diversity of manufacturers and models,
multiple hardware and software specifications, and data recovery tools that may not bring the
desired results on all platforms. Database Forensics specifically on the analysis of databases, using
relevant tools for analysis and manipulation of data. Analysis of database meta data is also
undertaken, along with studying the

Analysis Of The Hand Tool And Cutlery Manufacturing...
On first glance of the Hand tool and cutlery manufacturing industry one might think narrow
minded and say this industry is for construction and construction only. At least that is what came
to my mind upon randomly selecting the industry from a basket in my advanced marketing
management class. However, upon researching into this industry one will realize how vast this
industry is and for this report we will focus on this industry in the United States. For instance, in
everyday life we use or at least own things that make up a part of this industry such as vacuums,
lawnmowers, kitchen knives, and even jewelry to name a few. Yes, it also includes power tools
and yes construction company s do play a big role as buyers in this industry but they are not the
leading players and consumers. So who are the major players that purchase from this industry?
Well big time company s such as Home Depot, Walmart, and Sears play a vital role in the success
of the hand tooland cutlery manufacturing industry and losing one of these top dogs would
certainly impact the companies that make up the industry which leads me to my next discussion in
the introduction. Who makes up the industry? Who are the key suppliers? When looking into the
industry s major players in the US I turned to Ibis World.com and they stated The Procter and
Gamble Company, Stanley Black and Decker Inc., Edgewell Personal Care Co, and Snap on Inc.
These are the power houses in the industry. The remainder of this report will

The Beauty in Ordinary Life
Vittorio De Sica s The Bicycle Thieves (1948) and Francois Truffaut s The 400 Blows (1959) are
both recognized as highly influential films of their specific era that introduced an innovative way
of cinema world wide. With the Italian Neorealism intention of using a more realistic approach to
film, The Bicycle Thieves highlighted post war Rome s cultural society and economy by following
the journey of an ordinary man and his family s efforts to survive. The 400 Blows, being a French
New Wave film, went against the traditional French cinema and practiced the auteur approach
through its style of autobiography of the director Truffaut, himself, as a troublesome child. Similar

Significance of Section 3 and 4 of the Human Rights Act 1998
The power to strike down Acts of Parliament is defined as the power to declare legislation invalid
because it is unconstitutional. This paper will critically assess sections 3 and 4 of the HRA 1998
by defining them, reviewing case law surrounding their use, and by evaluating the powers that they
give to the judiciary. By doing so, it will demonstrate that section 3 gives judges powers that are
not significantly different from the power to strike down Acts of Parliament, whereas section 4
does not.
Definitions
Section 3 of the Human Rights Act (HRA) 1998 provides that primary and subordinate legislation
must be read and given effect in a way which is compatible with Convention rights . This
provides judges the power to interpret and amend legislation so far as it is possible so that it is
in accordance with Convention rights. There is no need for ambiguity in wording of the act to use
section 3 and it does not affect the validity of the Act notwithstanding the Act being incompatible
with Convention rights. There are limits on judges ability to use section 3 which restrict cases in
which it can be used. First, section 3 cannot go against the grain of the fundamental purpose of the
legislation in question. Second, judges can only go so far as possible when interpreting legislation.
The means that judges are restrained by the plain words of the provision and cannot stray from it s
meaning so far as to completely amend it.

The required graph for phase noise in terms of average BER for different filter types with
varying filter order are drawn in Figure 4.7(a) (d). The graph is drawn between the average BER

Hill Is The Most Critical Of All
Of the majority of the standards of Think and Grow Rich!, the rule of Desire is probably the
most critical of all. Hence, Hill has set it at the earliest reference point of his book.To
comprehend what Hill implies by Desire, it is vital to overlook all meanings of thoughtful
envisioning that the word may hold. Slope s Desire is not about wishing, as wishes might work
out as expected, as a rule by the activity of some outside operator. It s about needing. Just when a
man or lady genuinely needs something does he or she act towards achieving what is needed.
Where wishing is frequently vague and hesitant, needing is very much characterized and focuses
on a strategy. While needing something is completely created and working for you subliminally at
painfully inconvenient times of the day, you have Desire. Guarantee that your needs get to be
Desire, Hill proposes setting aside some opportunity to build up an unmistakable and succinct
articulation of that Desire. It is vital, he contends, to be particular. On the off chance that the
Desire is to have cash, the measure of cash must be indicated or Desire transforms into wish.
Slope additionally felt that it is critical to set up when the objective is to be accomplished and what
administration or positive attitude be rendered thusly for the accomplishing of the objective. This
ought to all meet up in an activity plan, which will be returned to frequently to engrave the Desire
in the brain. The peruser knowledgeable in self

During the Growth Stage, a company aims to develop brand recognition and increase their
customer base. The quality of the product is often improved and technical support is usually
enhanced. Pricing remains generally stable as demand continues with minimal competition. During
the Maturity Stage, the company has successfully established product and the aim for the
manufacturer is now to maintain the market share they have built up. This is probably the most
competitive time as KFC, now, has to take into consideration of Porter s five forces analysis. For
instance, other fast food oligopoly such as McDonald s, Subway, Burger King and so on might
come out with similar product of relatively cheaper price as substitute. Moreover, small
businesses are able to enter to the market because of reasonable production costs. A successful
strategy needs to be based on assets and competencies because it is generally easier for
competitors to duplicate what you do rather than who you are, said David A.Aaker Strategic
Market Management. The firm should invest to regain a dominant position so that it is a point of
advantage if other firms are catching up. A satisfied customer is one who will continue to buy

Tyrannosaurus Rex Fossils
In 2005, Palaeontologist Mary Schweitzer and her team made the discovery of finding original
soft tissue, including blood vessels, in a Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil in Montana. Many of
Schweitzer s fellow scientists insisted that she had been mistaken because of previous theories of
how fossils were preserved. The fossilwas buried in a permeable sandstone, where groundwater
could get in. Since organic material is quickly broken down in water, the soft tissue should have
decayed quickly under the conditions. When an animal dies, the soft tissues (skin) decays and
disappears over time, while hard tissues (bone) may gradually obtain minerals from the
environment and become fossils. Evolutionists scrambled to propose a reason on how the soft
tissue could have been completely preserved in pristine condition (Fields, H. 2006) (Morris, D.
2005). The extensive study of bones from New Zealand s extinct giant Moa bird calculated that the
lifespan of DNA should be measured in thousands, not millions of years. Therefore the unfossilised

The skin showed evidence of stripes and perhaps soft tissue. Apparently scientists stated that it
died on the banks of Hell s Creek, where its body was rapidly buried under accumulating
sediment and should have been wiped out by the decay process. However, the mineralization had
been so rapid that it is trapped and preserved as the waterlogged soil buried it in before the body
could decay much, thus ensuring preservation. Although fossils containing organic compounds or
mummified soft tissues have been discovered before, the presence of both is extremely rare
(National Geographic News, 2017) (Charles, Q. 2009). The fossilised soft tissues resemble those

Leonardo Da Vinci s Work
Leonardo da Vinci Born in 1452 is one of the most fascinating personalities in the history of
Western art. Prepared in Florence as a painter and artist in the workshop of Andrea Del
Verrocchio (1435 1488), Leonardo is additionally celebrated for his investigative commitments.
His interest and voracious strive after information never left him. He was always observing,
experimenting, and inventing, and drawing was, for him, a way for recording his investigation of
nature. Albeit finished works by Leonardo are few, he cleared out a vast assortment of drawings
(just about 2,500) that record his thoughts, most still accumulated into journals. He was mainly
active in Florence (1472 ca. 1482, 1500 1508) and Milan (ca. 1482 99, 1508 13), however... Show

In later life, Leonardo just recorded two youth events. One, which he viewed as an omen, was
the point at which a kite dropped from the sky and drifted over his cradle, its tail feathers
brushing his face. The second happened while investigating in the mountains. He found a cave
and was both scared that some extraordinary creature may prowl there, and driven by interest to
figure out what was inside. When Leonardo was fifteen, his father apprenticed him to Andrea
del Verrocchio (1435 1488), the famous artist of Florence and the early Renaissance. For nearly
a decade, da Vinci improved his painting and sculpting methods and skilled in mechanical arts.
When he was 20, in 1472, the painters organization of Florence offered da Vinci a membership,
yet he decided to stay with Verrocchio until he became a independent master in 1478. Around
1478 Leonardo set up his own particular studio. In 1481 he got a extensive church commission
for an altarpiece, the Adoration of the Magi . In this unfinished painting, Leonardo s new
approach is significantly more creative. A large assembly of bystanders, with varied faces, takes

Aristophanes Views On Love And Stereotypes
One of the most interesting topics to discuss in our society is love. As a people we have always
enjoyed debating and arguing about it s ideals and significance. In fact, our infatuation with love
has been ongoing for centuries. For example, some of the oldest and most stimulating admirers
of the concept are thought to have been the Ancient Greeks. The Greeks were captivated not only
by the idea of love, but by the Greek God, whose namesake the concept took after: Eros. They
loved Eros and he was often described as a wonderful deity; a lover of beauty and everything good.
However, there were some who questioned the true meaning behind the god and the concept; one of
it s most famous contemplators being the philosopher Plato. Plato disagreed... Show more content

than Plato. It is through his speeches given by both Diotima and Aristophanes that we see how

but in the end, I though both held substance. They both added to the mystery of what love really is.
And each one had it s strengths and weakness. They were complete opposites yet, they in sense held
truth. Love can both or neither. Love in the end depends on human

The aim of this dissertation is to observe whether female or male students have a similar or
different perspective of the meaning of consent in a sexual context; specifically, on the subject of
campus sexual assault.
INTRODUCTION
In the United States (U.S.), sexual assault on campuses remains to make national headlines, and
now this problem is increasing and occurring in the United Kingdom (U.K.). The term sexual
assault varies in definition from state to state in the U.S. and other ... Show more content on

Those who are closest to the victims should help the victim on their path of recovery. Although,
the supports from those closest to the victims may play a positive role in the recovery process;
however, some people may feel to withdraw or partly blame the victim for getting raped or
sexually assaulted (Vito, Maahs and Holmes, 2006: p. 281).
EXPLAINING SEXUAL ASSAULT AND RAPE
As reported by, feminist criminologists, their perspective of rape and sexual assault differ from
liberal and radical feminists. Liberal feminists viewpoint in regards of rape as a gender neutral
assault on a persons autonomy and mainly focusing on the harm that rape can do to an individual.
In contrast, radical feminists describe rape as a subject to be recognised and understood as a major
pillar of patriarchy; a social system in which men claim the positions of dominance and control of
the central norms and values that are linked with masculinity (Johnson, 2005: p.

We Grow Accustomed To The Dark And Acquainted With The...
The experience of darkness is both individual and universal. Within Emily Dickinson s We grow
accustomed to the Dark and Robert Frost s Acquainted with the Night, the speakers engage in an
understanding of darkness and night as much greater than themselves. Every individual has an
experience of the isolation of the night, as chronicled in Frost s poem, yet it is a global experience
that everyone must face, on which Dickinson s poem elaborates. Through the use of rhythm, point
of view, imagery, and mood, each poet makes clear the fact that there is no single darkness that is
too difficult to overcome.
Both Dickinson and Frost approach their darkness with a sense of rhythm. In Dickinson s poem, the
uncertain step of line 5 is conveyed through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In their eyes is the truth. The speaker in Dickinson s poem promotes adaptation as the primary
response to the darkness; one must, fit our Vision to the Dark before acting. With courage and
conviction can the speaker finally move forward And meet the Road erect . Familiarization to the
darkness instills a sense of fortitude with which the speaker suggests may assist until the light
returns. While the speaker in Dickinson s poem chooses to face the darkness, the speaker in Frost s
poem becomes enveloped within it, shying away from the surrounding society. Embarrassed by this
nightly wandering, the speaker scarcely responds to meeting the watchman on his beat, saying, And
dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain. By lowering the eyes, the speaker assumes a passive role,
choosing to dwell within the night rather than facing it. This melancholy response may appear
cowardly against the courageous action of the other poem, but the speaker knows that one must
become acquainted with the night before moving on from this solitary lifestyle. In both poems, the
reaction to the darkness is within the eyes. They must change themselves to face the darkness, or let
the night change

Essay Alternative Energy Sources for the World
The world has relied on the same sources of fuels and delivery systems for at least the past one
hundred years. Since the turn of the Industrial Revolution, the world has been dependent on coal,
oil, and other natural resources. These sources of fuel have worked fine for the world, until now.
At the rate it that these fuels are used the world may one day run out of these precious resources.
Our society must prepare now to utilize an alternate source for its fuel. The longer the world waits,
the harder it will be to replace these fuels before they run out. Four different types of fuels are
currently under research. These fuels are hydrogen, natural gas, bio fuels, and solar energy.
Currently under research is a new type of motor, known as... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

1). In a process known as electrolysis, hydrogen is created by applying electricity to water. When
applied to water, electricity breaks down the water into bubbles of oxygen and hydrogen gases.
Some argue that this process would require electricity produced by current fuel sources.
However, this electricity could also be supplied by solar energy. Once created hydrogen must
then be stored and distributed. Hydrogen must be stored at super high pressures as a liquid.
Once stored, the hydrogen will then be converted back into a gas. This area of research is
making large strides to develop this storage technology. Once the researchers can overcome this
stage, it will be more readily available to the public. The infrastructure for hydrogen could be
adapted from the current system that is used. The gas, stations, and fueling stations could already
act as a means of distribution. This means hydrogen may one day be a logical replacement for
conventional fuels. Another promising type of fuel that can replace conventional fuels is natural
gas. Natural gas, found along with conventional fuels, is very abundant. Nearly 85% of natural gas
is made of methane (Gotlib, par. 1). It is found among the same petroleum deposits that
conventional oil is found or in sole gas deposits (Gotlib, par. 1). This gas has been around since the
beginning of time. In the early Chinese dynasty, collected from vents in the ground, the Chinese

We live in a world that changes every day. The sapling grows into a towering tree. The thick
trunk is cut off. The children are all grown up or are starting puberty. Parents are getting old.
Children are raised or nurtured by parents. And we have the responsibility to support our family.
Guns aren t legal. The marijuana becoming legal. Most of these changes are reasonable or natural
changes. The rest of the changes might be totally adverse, which reminds me to rethink about
which took place before. Sometimes these changes occur from a word or a scene.
Before I went abroad to study in the US, I hardly knew about American culture. All of me though of
culture inheres in Chinese culture. I never thought there s such a large cultural difference between
Chinese culture and Western culture. It did not occur to me to consider why it happens and what
I could learn from it. It s my first year here in America and I choose to live in home stay instead of

As the spread of commercialized genetically modified foods (GMF) products rise, the number of
people exposed to genetically modified foods incline globally. The term genetically modified
foods can be used interchangeably with transgenic foods, genetically engineered crops (GE) and
Recombinant DNA technology and therefore defined as the enhancement of foods in which a gene
of interest from one organism is extracted and inserted into the target organisms. (1) The genes of
interest may be cells from bacteria, insects, animals, plants or viruses. Although the controversial

Body Evidence 1: In terms of its conservational effects, toxicity is a massive matter regarding
GM crops. More than 80% of all genetically modified crops grown worldwide have been
engineered for herbicide tolerance. As a result, the use of toxic herbicides, such as Roundup,
has increased fifteenfold since GMOs were first introduced. (3) GM crops create toxins in the
soil wherever they are planted. When toxic residues are released into the soil through the GM
crop, toxins can prevent the growth of good bacteria that are essential for plant growth.
Consequently, there are fewer soil bacteria, which are integral to the healthy soil for plants to
grow without the use of chemical fertilizers. Nutrients are not returned to the soil, thus leaving
the soil dry and void of all vital nutrients for growth. When GM crops are planted, generally in a
monocrop fashion, traditional seeds are no longer used. Framers then become accustomed to the
GMO seeds creating a cycle of dependence on GMO seeds and chemical fertilizers, pesticides,
and herbicides to grow a single crop. In addition to soil issues, the irrigation used to grow GM
foods naturally carries all of these problems into water sources and into the air. (3) This exposes
different bacteria, insects, and animals to the same problems. Thus, creating pesticide resistant
superbugs; the toxins originally used to

National Incident Management System Summary
The National Incident Management System (NIMS) was put in to place to be a proactive approach
to manage incidents involving threats and hazards. It was designed for all levels of government,
nongovernmental organizations, and the private sector to work together to reduce the loss of life,
property, and harm to the environment (National Incident ManagementSystem, 2016). A
fundamental part of managing threats and hazards is to set up an Incident Command System
(ICS). An ICS provides consistency and standardization for dealing with a threat or hazard such as
a weapon of mass destruction incident. Weapons of mass destruction (WMD) can be biological,
chemical, radiological, or a mass explosion. First responders to the attack are tasked with patient
assessment, and they are usually the first ones to determine what type of an attack it is. If the
attack is determined to be biological, chemical, radiological; then an ICS is set up and takes over
control. The incident command will be the ultimate decision maker for the control of the incident.
The ICS has an Incident Commander and their staff will make operational decisions and allocate
resources to implement these decisions. The ICS is the framework necessary to manage the

The episode featured Tom Cruise and John Travolta locking themselves in a closet after the

Sodium is the major cation (positively charged ion) which is present in the ECF. The normal
range for sodium is 135 145mEq/L. Sodium plays a role in fluid balance, osmotic pressure, muscle
contraction and can be regulated by a sodium potassium pump. When there are deficiencies in
sodium (i.e. 145mEq/L) are known as hypernatremia. The kidneys try to counteract this by secreting
ADH to retain water. Hyperaldosteronism (increased aldosterone levels which increase sodium
reabsorption) can be another cause of hypernatremia. Other causes can include excessive fluid loss,
high salt intake and increased kidney reabsorption. Symptoms of hypernatremia include
dehydration, fever or coma.
Overall regulating electrolytes are vital to maintaining a balance in keeping homeostatic conditions.
Acid base balance must also be sustained to enable maximum function of the kidneys. Both
electrolytes and acid base balance are important components regulated by the kidney and lungs to
some extent; and keeping equilibrium and balanced levels will be beneficial for a healthy
functionality of the kidneys.

Exploring the Negative Effects of Maternal Obesity Obesity in pregnant women is a global
concern. In The United States, obesity is a critical public health issue one in every three women is
obese (Masho, et al). This issue becomes crucial in the context that 36% of pregnant women in the
United States are obese (Shub, et al). Studies show a strong association between maternal obesity
and health risks during pregnancy and labor. In addition, a disconnect in perception and awareness
exists such that most obese pregnant women who gain weight during pregnancy underestimate
their Body Mass Index (BMI); and also have poor knowledge about the risk associated with
obesity. In our time period, there is a significant increase in the average body index in all age
groups and most commonly with the women who are entering their reproduction age. According
to the article, Weight Gain During Pregnancy , a normal weighted gravida, or pregnant woman,
has BMI of 18.5 24.9 Kg/m2, over weight gravida has BMI of 25 29.9 Kg/m2, and obese gravida

The Crystal Land Poem Meaning
The Crystal Land: Constructing and Destroying Zembla
By shifting focus to the imagery of crystal, which carries contrasting connotations from the
windows of the previous narrative, Nabokov also shifts the setting from the realm of reality to
that of Kinbote s fantasy. The delicate extravagance generally associated with crystal can be seen
as a representation of the unattainable, subjective realm both internal authors fundamentally strive
for. The fact that crystal is able to refract light due to the presence of lead also supports that as it
alludes to the idea of the false azure projected by the windowpane in Shade s poem. Furthermore,
both Zembla and the ambiguous realm Shade portrays in the first stanza of his poem are dubbed the

This can be seen as a parallel to his previous position of observing from a glass house ; he is
imprisoned in his rose stone palace from a corner turret of which one could make out with the
help of field glasses lithe youths (97). While the rose stone doesn t initially seem to belong to the
semantic field of glass, here Nabokov is referring to the rose quartz crystal. By using the word
stone, however he evokes the juxtaposition of nature and glass imagery from the first narrative. By
synthesizing the two symbols here, he can thus shift the meaning of crystal to act as a barrier
entrapping the narrator within his fantasy. Furthermore, by placing Kinbote in the same
voyeuristic role as in the first narrative, Nabokov is able to once again convey Kinbote s inability
to transcend his fantasy due to his dissociation from reality. In effect, by including the fantasy
narrative, Nabokov has the freedom for romanticized invention which allows him to literally
imprison Kinbote in a crystal palace. This acts as a representation of the idea of the glass house

Research Paper On Dr Sakena Yacoobi
In many religions there are problems facing the right for a girls education, luckily there are
people all around the world like Dr. Yacoobi who fight against this even if they get criticism. The
religion I have chosen to speak about is Islam and how these problems are being alleviated and
how it all started for Dr. Sakena Yacoobi. How did Afghanistan become a place where families,
especially women and children, where diminished and devalued in their own country? How did
Dr. Sakena Yacoobi stand up against this oppression and build a stronger women presence
throughout Afghanistan? Dr. Yacoobi was born and raised in Herat, Afghanistan. She was born into
a middle class family with a father who always knew his children would go to school whether...

Sakena Yacoobi quickly began to implement systems in Afghanistan. She founded and is in charge
of the Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL) and through this institute she was able to create change
in many of the horrors that the Taliban left behind. ( Professor Sakena Yacoobi )The Afghan
Institute of Learning has developed and implements the health and education programs of AIL as
founder of this Afghan women s NGO that has provided education and health services to over 12
million Afghans and currently serves 350,000 Afghans, primarily women and children annually
with a staff of 450 and an annual budget of approximately $1.5 Million.(Yacoobi) Though this does
not only scratch the surface from providing quality educational opportunities through preschools,
primary and secondary schools, enrichment classes, a university, Women s Learning Centers and
Educational Learning Centers she has fostered a new generation of women and education. She has
innovated Women s Learning Centers, which provide a place for women to meet, participate in
educational, health, human rights and skills training classes and receive health services. Seeing the
huge financial turmoil she supports literacy classes and income generation training projects for
women without financial stability so that no one is limited. She Supported 80 underground home

Racism And Sexism In Sula
Toni Morrison, a Nobel Laureate, is considered one of the foremost figures in contemporary
American fiction whose award winning novels have won her international acclaim. Toni
Morrison has earned a reputation as a gifted storyteller and masterful stylist who has created
haunting images of humans isolated by their failures in love and their problems with identity. In
her novels, she presents black women as subjects who try to cultivate positive identity in a very
hostile world. Morrison s black female characters challenge all the stereotypical negative images
which are associated with black women. Toni Morrison s Sula is a fine work of art, well planned
and well executed, without losing any human interest. Sula was well received critically. The novel
was featured in the national women s magazine Red book. The... Show more content on

This is confirmed by bell hooks who argues that: Sexism and racism intensified and magnified the
sufferings and oppressions of black women (22). Nevertheless, for many African American
women, motherhood presents a symbol of power and is an empowering experience (Collins 132
7). Motherhood is also seen as the standard of womanhood (Christian, Black Feminist Criticism
76). And according to this standard, women should live their lives to sacrifice for others.
However, in Sula, Toni Morrison creates a strong female character who not only refuses the role
[the standard role assigned for a woman], she steps outside the caste of woman, beyond any class
or definition [and] insists on making herself (Christian, Black Feminist Criticism 76). Sula will not
surrender to the assigned role and she counts on her friendship bond with Nel because this bond
allows both Nel and Sula to fight against oppression; but the two women separate in their adulthood
because of the different roles they take up in their

Disadvantages Of Volunteer Tourism
Brown (2008) states that volunteer tourism includes different aspects and environmental protection
is a kind of volunteer tourism. According to Brown (2008), volunteer tourism, or voluntourism,
refers to the tours which provide travelers opportunities to participate in voluntary activities and
enable them to communicate with local people. The participants have different mindsets on
voluntourism (Brown, 2008), some of them is volunteer minded while the others are vacation
minded. The main reasons for the participants to participate in this type of tourismare cultural
immersion, to help the less privileged and seeking friendship and educational opportunity for
children. It is generally accepted that voluntourism brings some benefits to the participants... Show

When the organization make decision on the destination, what factors do you measure? Do you
consider the statistics from international organization to measure the need of different region? Do
you offer programme in case there are emergency need in a specific region (such as tsunami in
2004 in Southeast Asia)?
Interviews are two way communication, which enable the investigation to understand the exact
thought of different organizations and their opinion would be useful to generate an accurate
conclusion. Besides interviewing management from organizations, the investigation also includes
the quantitative approach to understand the mentality of the participants to join volunteer tourism.
Snowball sampling will be used so that the sample size will gradually increase. This sampling
method is chosen because it is not easy to access to the participants. Questionnaire will be
conducted for quantitative research. It enables the investigation to understand the mainstream of
thought of participating in volunteer tourism. Measure of central tendency is used as the research
investigates the most typical response to a question. This facilitates the research to collect the
opinion from many participants and understand the mainstream of thought. Exact questions cannot
be presented at this stage; however, the interview will consists of questions such

Thomas Hobbes And The Political Philosophy
Thomas Hobbes was, as we know, a 17th century British philosopher. We learn in this module
that Hobbes was the creator of the political philosophy known as social contract theory and that
he was also an egoist. By the revelation of the latter one could easily infer, before diving deeper,
that this philosophical theory is based on the inherent selfishness of man. This assumption would,
of course, be correct. Hobbes believed that all of mankind is inherently selfish and that to obtain
a peaceful and civilized society we had to give up those base desires in the name of security. The
idea being that I give up my right to murder my neighbor so that my neighbor is not allowed to
murder me. You give up your right to do things that could possible harm other people so that other
people do not harm you doing those same things.
Hobbes argued that, without an authority to enforce this social contract, man would revert to a State
of Nature in which there would be no place for industry, because the fruit thereof is uncertain; and
consequently no culture of the earth; no navigation, nor use of the commodities that may be
imported by Sea; no commodious Building; no Instruments of moving and removing such things
as require much force; no Knowledge of the face of the Earth; no account of Time; no Arts; no
Letters; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death; And the life of man,
solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short . People will murder, lie, and steal

  • 2. Biblical Allusions to The Grapes of Wrath Essay example Biblical Allusions to The Grapes of Wrath John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California, on February 27, 1902. He studied marine biology at Stanford University and then traveled east on a freighter through the Panama Canal. Steinbeck went to New York to work as a newspaper reporter but soon returned to California and held a variety of jobs while he wrote. Steinbeck published Tortilla Flat in 1935, Of Mice and Men in 1937, and The Red Pony in 1937, which established his reputation as a forceful writer. In 1939 he wrote The Grapes of Wrath, which summoned up the despair and hardship of the early 1930 s. John Steinbeck died in 1968. Above all it showed everyone that these damn Okies were all simply men, women, and children, no different from anyone else, just poorer (Frohock 133). They were human beings with feelings and not the uncivilized beasts they were portrayed as at the time. John Steinbeck carefully molded his story The Grapes of Wrath to encompass many themes and ideas. To help enforce his message Steinbeck included several Biblical allusions. John Steinbeck uses Biblical allusions to create the theme that strength to survive comes from faith by using characters and events. Steinbeck creates the theme of the novel by alluding the characters in his story to characters in the Bible. Jim Casy is an allusion to Jesus Christ. They have the same initials and live their lives as examples of their beliefs: Jesus to the world as Casy is to Tom (Rombold 149). Casy even compares himself to Christ when he says, I got tired like Him, an I got mixed up like Him, an I went into the wilderness like Him, without no campin stuff (105). In the first half of the book Casy is thinking and forming his ideas. He changes from a thinker to a man of action when he sacrifices himself for Tom (Slade 242). When in prison Casy sees the advantage of organizing people to achieve a common goal. When Casy tried to put his ideas into action he, like Christ, aroused the antagonism of the people in authority and was brutally killed. He died, like Christ saying to his crucifiers, ... • 3. The Chicago Teachers Union And Chicago Public Schools Georgis, Donnell, Mike, Moose For the second time in almost 4 years, over 350,000 Chicago Public School Students may not be able to go to school because of the CTU Strike that is currently in progress today (The Washington Post). The issue between the Chicago Teachers Union and Chicago Public Schools has not been solved yet due to disagreements about the income received. The Chicago Teachers Union has made offers to school administrations; however, the responses were not in their favor. The union has been in progress of agreeing on a contract since November 2011, [and the strike that occurred at the time] was the first to hit the Windy City in 25 years (Liebelson). The issue must have erupted due to a misconception or a realization of problems occurring. Chicago Teachers Union choosing to strike does not affect charter schools since they are not a part of Chicago Public Schools. The issue of school strikes can be fixed by increasing the budgets and providing useful resources to teachers in order to improve the level of education. The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) Strike in 2012 affected every single Chicago Public School and their Students in 2012. The strike affected about 600 public schools which is over 350, 000 students. The CTU began negotiating their contract with CPS in November of 2011, but their demands were not met. Since the negotiating did not solve the issue, the Chicago Teachers Union chose to organize a strike for the first time in Chicago in 25 years. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many things have caused this, but the most recent and impactful event was when Donald Trump won the election. Trump s views on illegal immigration and his stance on renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement or NAFTA really shook the mexican peso out of control. This to the point of breaking the unnerving barrier of 20 pesos per dollar. To put this into perspective, when I was about twelve years old a dollar was worth ten pesos. This severely affected the mexican people and many daily necessities would increase in price. The bus and metro prices would increase by 20% severely affecting many of the working class. Digital forensics is a science, which involves collection, preservation and documentation of the digital evidence from various digital storage media. This entire process must be undertaken in fashion that is appropriate forensically, and results in collection of data, which can be made admissible in a court of law during the investigation of a crime. Since most of the transactions today happen across digitalmedia, it is imperative that organizations world over understand the fundamentals of forensics, and also take steps in training their employees. If such procedures are not put in place, then it may result in the data of an organization to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The branch of Network forensics is relatively a newer branch of digital forensics, and it involves carefully analyzing the data that is flowing in a network to find any possible evidences of intrusion or theft. The information flow in a network is always dynamic in nature, and thus this branch of digital forensics needs to be proactive in its approach. One of the usage of this branch lies in the investigation of network data for any traffic that might seem anomalous in nature, for the purpose of detecting intrusions. The second usage lies in the area of law enforcement, where the evidence gathered by Network Forensics can be used as evidence in case of a crime. Mobile Device Forensics relates to data and evidence recovery from a mobile device, be it a mobile phone, PDA, tablet, GPS device, and so on. This area of forensics is a bit challenging due to the reason that exact pin pointing of location where from communication was initiated is not accurately possible. Other factors adding to the challenge are the diversity of manufacturers and models, multiple hardware and software specifications, and data recovery tools that may not bring the desired results on all platforms. On first glance of the Hand tool and cutlery manufacturing industry one might think narrow minded and say this industry is for construction and construction only. At least that is what came to my mind upon randomly selecting the industry from a basket in my advanced marketing management class. However, upon researching into this industry one will realize how vast this industry is and for this report we will focus on this industry in the United States. For instance, in everyday life we use or at least own things that make up a part of this industry such as vacuums, lawnmowers, kitchen knives, and even jewelry to name a few. Yes, it also includes power tools and yes construction company s do play a big role as buyers in this industry but they are not the leading players and consumers. So who are the major players that purchase from this industry? Well big time company s such as Home Depot, Walmart, and Sears play a vital role in the success of the hand tooland cutlery manufacturing industry and losing one of these top dogs would certainly impact the companies that make up the industry which leads me to my next discussion in the introduction. Who makes up the industry? Who are the key suppliers? • 8. Significance of Section 3 and 4 of the Human Rights Act 1998 The power to strike down Acts of Parliament is defined as the power to declare legislation invalid because it is unconstitutional. This paper will critically assess sections 3 and 4 of the HRA 1998 by defining them, reviewing case law surrounding their use, and by evaluating the powers that they give to the judiciary. By doing so, it will demonstrate that section 3 gives judges powers that are not significantly different from the power to strike down Acts of Parliament, whereas section 4 does not. Definitions Section 3 of the Human Rights Act (HRA) 1998 provides that primary and subordinate legislation must be read and given effect in a way which is compatible with Convention rights . This provides judges the power to interpret and amend legislation so far as it is possible so that it is in accordance with Convention rights. There is no need for ambiguity in wording of the act to use section 3 and it does not affect the validity of the Act notwithstanding the Act being incompatible with Convention rights. There are limits on judges ability to use section 3 which restrict cases in which it can be used. First, section 3 cannot go against the grain of the fundamental purpose of the legislation in question. Second, judges can only go so far as possible when interpreting legislation. The means that judges are restrained by the plain words of the provision and cannot stray from it s meaning so far as to completely amend it. Next, section 4 of the HRA 1998 provides that ... Tyrannosaurus Rex Fossils In 2005, Palaeontologist Mary Schweitzer and her team made the discovery of finding original soft tissue, including blood vessels, in a Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil in Montana. Many of Schweitzer s fellow scientists insisted that she had been mistaken because of previous theories of how fossils were preserved. The fossilwas buried in a permeable sandstone, where groundwater could get in. Since organic material is quickly broken down in water, the soft tissue should have decayed quickly under the conditions. When an animal dies, the soft tissues (skin) decays and disappears over time, while hard tissues (bone) may gradually obtain minerals from the environment and become fossils. Evolutionists scrambled to propose a reason on how the soft tissue could have been completely preserved in pristine condition (Fields, H. 2006) (Morris, D. 2005). Prepared in Florence as a painter and artist in the workshop of Andrea Del Verrocchio (1435 1488), Leonardo is additionally celebrated for his investigative commitments. His interest and voracious strive after information never left him. He was always observing, experimenting, and inventing, and drawing was, for him, a way for recording his investigation of nature. Albeit finished works by Leonardo are few, he cleared out a vast assortment of drawings (just about 2,500) that record his thoughts, most still accumulated into journals. Within Emily Dickinson s We grow accustomed to the Dark and Robert Frost s Acquainted with the Night, the speakers engage in an understanding of darkness and night as much greater than themselves. Every individual has an experience of the isolation of the night, as chronicled in Frost s poem, yet it is a global experience that everyone must face, on which Dickinson s poem elaborates. Through the use of rhythm, point of view, imagery, and mood, each poet makes clear the fact that there is no single darkness that is too difficult to overcome. While the speaker in Dickinson s poem chooses to face the darkness, the speaker in Frost s poem becomes enveloped within it, shying away from the surrounding society. Embarrassed by this nightly wandering, the speaker scarcely responds to meeting the watchman on his beat, saying, And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain. By lowering the eyes, the speaker assumes a passive role, choosing to dwell within the night rather than facing it. This melancholy response may appear cowardly against the courageous action of the other poem, but the speaker knows that one must become acquainted with the night before moving on from this solitary lifestyle. Since the turn of the Industrial Revolution, the world has been dependent on coal, oil, and other natural resources. These sources of fuel have worked fine for the world, until now. At the rate it that these fuels are used the world may one day run out of these precious resources. Our society must prepare now to utilize an alternate source for its fuel. The longer the world waits, the harder it will be to replace these fuels before they run out. Four different types of fuels are currently under research. These fuels are hydrogen, natural gas, bio fuels, and solar energy. Currently under research is a new type of motor, known as... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 1). In a process known as electrolysis, hydrogen is created by applying electricity to water. When applied to water, electricity breaks down the water into bubbles of oxygen and hydrogen gases. Some argue that this process would require electricity produced by current fuel sources. However, this electricity could also be supplied by solar energy. Once created hydrogen must then be stored and distributed. Hydrogen must be stored at super high pressures as a liquid. Once stored, the hydrogen will then be converted back into a gas. This area of research is making large strides to develop this storage technology. Once the researchers can overcome this stage, it will be more readily available to the public. The infrastructure for hydrogen could be adapted from the current system that is used. The gas, stations, and fueling stations could already act as a means of distribution. This means hydrogen may one day be a logical replacement for conventional fuels. Another promising type of fuel that can replace conventional fuels is natural gas. Natural gas, found along with conventional fuels, is very abundant. Nearly 85% of natural gas is made of methane (Gotlib, par. 1). It is found among the same petroleum deposits that conventional oil is found or in sole gas deposits (Gotlib, par. 1). This gas has been around since the beginning of time. More than 80% of all genetically modified crops grown worldwide have been engineered for herbicide tolerance. As a result, the use of toxic herbicides, such as Roundup, has increased fifteenfold since GMOs were first introduced. (3) GM crops create toxins in the soil wherever they are planted. When toxic residues are released into the soil through the GM crop, toxins can prevent the growth of good bacteria that are essential for plant growth. Consequently, there are fewer soil bacteria, which are integral to the healthy soil for plants to grow without the use of chemical fertilizers. Nutrients are not returned to the soil, thus leaving the soil dry and void of all vital nutrients for growth. When GM crops are planted, generally in a monocrop fashion, traditional seeds are no longer used. Framers then become accustomed to the GMO seeds creating a cycle of dependence on GMO seeds and chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides to grow a single crop. In addition to soil issues, the irrigation used to grow GM foods naturally carries all of these problems into water sources and into the air. It was designed for all levels of government, nongovernmental organizations, and the private sector to work together to reduce the loss of life, property, and harm to the environment (National Incident ManagementSystem, 2016). A fundamental part of managing threats and hazards is to set up an Incident Command System (ICS). An ICS provides consistency and standardization for dealing with a threat or hazard such as a weapon of mass destruction incident. Sodium is the major cation (positively charged ion) which is present in the ECF. The normal range for sodium is 135 145mEq/L. Sodium plays a role in fluid balance, osmotic pressure, muscle contraction and can be regulated by a sodium potassium pump. When there are deficiencies in sodium (i.e. 145mEq/L) are known as hypernatremia. The kidneys try to counteract this by secreting ADH to retain water. Hyperaldosteronism (increased aldosterone levels which increase sodium reabsorption) can be another cause of hypernatremia. Other causes can include excessive fluid loss, high salt intake and increased kidney reabsorption. Symptoms of hypernatremia include dehydration, fever or coma. Overall regulating electrolytes are vital to maintaining a balance in keeping homeostatic conditions. Acid base balance must also be sustained to enable maximum function of the kidneys. Furthermore, by placing Kinbote in the same voyeuristic role as in the first narrative, Nabokov is able to once again convey Kinbote s inability to transcend his fantasy due to his dissociation from reality. In effect, by including the fantasy narrative, Nabokov has the freedom for romanticized invention which allows him to literally imprison Kinbote in a crystal palace. This acts as a representation of the idea of the glass house explored in the first ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Racism And Sexism In Sula Toni Morrison, a Nobel Laureate, is considered one of the foremost figures in contemporary American fiction whose award winning novels have won her international acclaim. Toni Morrison has earned a reputation as a gifted storyteller and masterful stylist who has created haunting images of humans isolated by their failures in love and their problems with identity. In her novels, she presents black women as subjects who try to cultivate positive identity in a very hostile world. Morrison s black female characters challenge all the stereotypical negative images which are associated with black women. This is confirmed by bell hooks who argues that: Sexism and racism intensified and magnified the sufferings and oppressions of black women (22). Nevertheless, for many African American women, motherhood presents a symbol of power and is an empowering experience (Collins 132 7). Motherhood is also seen as the standard of womanhood (Christian, Black Feminist Criticism 76). And according to this standard, women should live their lives to sacrifice for others. However, in Sula, Toni Morrison creates a strong female character who not only refuses the role [the standard role assigned for a woman], she steps outside the caste of woman, beyond any class or definition [and] insists on making herself (Christian, Black Feminist Criticism 76). Sula will not surrender to the assigned role and she counts on her friendship bond with Nel because this bond allows both Nel and Sula to fight against oppression; but the two women separate in their adulthood because of the different roles they take up in their ... • 42. Thomas Hobbes And The Political Philosophy Thomas Hobbes was, as we know, a 17th century British philosopher. We learn in this module that Hobbes was the creator of the political philosophy known as social contract theory and that he was also an egoist. By the revelation of the latter one could easily infer, before diving deeper, that this philosophical theory is based on the inherent selfishness of man. This assumption would, of course, be correct. Hobbes believed that all of mankind is inherently selfish and that to obtain a peaceful and civilized society we had to give up those base desires in the name of security. The idea being that I give up my right to murder my neighbor so that my neighbor is not allowed to murder me. You give up your right to do things that could possible harm other people so that other people do not harm you doing those same things. Hobbes argued that, without an authority to enforce this social contract, man would revert to a State of Nature in which there would be no place for industry, because the fruit thereof is uncertain; and consequently no culture of the earth; no navigation, nor use of the commodities that may be imported by Sea; no commodious Building; no Instruments of moving and removing such things as require much force; no Knowledge of the face of the Earth; no account of Time; no Arts; no Letters; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death; And the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short .
