Nursing Impairment
Nowadays, the preferred pathway for a nurse discovered at work under the influence of drugs or
alcohol is support and treatment rather than being fired on the spot. The intended goal is that after
treatment and rehabilitation the nurse may eventually return to work. But a vital element in this
plan is early intervention.
We have already noted that for evidence of impairment at work to appear, the use of the substance
may have been going on for quite some time. So, in aiming for a successful outcome the clock is
already an enemy.
As we look at some of the signs that may indicate impairment through substance use, now seems a
good time to remind ourselves that substance abuse may not be the only possible explanation for
the impairment. But whatever ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The IPN was: established in 1983 through legislative action to ensure public health and safety
through a program that provides close monitoring of nurses who are unsafe to practice due to
impairment as a result of misuse or abuse of alcohol or drugs, or both, or due to a mental or
physical condition which could affect the licensee s ability to practice with skill and safety.
(Intervention Project for Nurses [IPN], n.d. b. para. 1)
The realization that, when suffering from a substance use disorder, a nurse deserves the same care
and treatment that we would offer to anyone else has led to the development of these alternative to
discipline programs around the country, and in Florida it is the IPN.
Its programs allow nurses to receive treatment and rehabilitation in a non punitive manner. If the
nurse agrees to withdraw from practice and complete the program the IPN will then facilitate the
successful return of that nurse to practice, all the while maintaining confidentiality even from the
Board of Nursing.
However, if a nurse agrees to these conditions and then reneges, the IPN will forward the file to the

Invisible Man Conflict
Highlighting a major theme or conflict in Ralph Ellison s Invisible Man is a very difficult
challenge because there are so many issues that occur in the novel. However, one of the
important problems addressed is the conflict is self identify due to the lack of visibility as it
relates to the main character. In questioning one s visibility, you must begin by understanding your
own self identity and existence. Ellison uses the main character to explore the many social
problems that were a direct reflection of African Americans post civil war, and reconstructive era.
The social climate that the narrator faces in discovering his self identity and visibility is told
through several stages in his life. As the narrator struggles to arrive at a conclusion... Show more

Athenian Philosophers
Philosopher to Philosopher
In my opinion , the most profound philosopher happens to be Athenian Philosopher Socrates. In
comparison to Prince Arjuna I believe that both philosophers possess the qualities and
characteristics of very wise men. In this essay I am going to compare two philosophers who may
have had different values but similar beliefs. In Socrates The Apology Socrates explained to the
public why he should not be put to death because of his choice to believe in another God. The
people of Athens were lead to believe that Socrates was also corrupting the youth to believe in
other Gods as well. In Socrates the Apology he states I have a divine sign [daimonion] from the
god which... began when I was a child. It is a voice, and whenever ... Show more content on

If the conversation wasn t held between Ajurna and Krishna Ajurna would ve have never fought
in the war or even had the heart or courage he had after having the eye opening conversation he
had with Krishna. If Socrates Dominion wouldn t have turned him away from certain situations
he would have probably died in his early life as he says states in the Apology , I have a divine
sign [daimonion] from the god which... began when I was a child. It is a voice, and whenever it
speaks it turns me away from something I am about to do, but it never turns me towards anything.
This is what has prevented me from taking part in public affairs, and I think it was quite right to
prevent me. Be sure, gentlemen of the jury, I should have died long ago otherwise . In the end
result both of the two had conversations that enlightened them to do what fit best in that period of
their life. Socrates believed that he wouldn t have became the true philosopher that was if it wasn t
for his inner voice.
Personally speaking I believe that Socrates and Ajurna had many similarities with a few
differences. The two philosophers were on the same path and had similar characteristics. They both
were very intelligent men who looked at the world with more of an open minded view which
brought trouble their way. It is safe to say that they both have made an impact in Philosophy and
their ideas touched the mind of many

assist younger officers with questions or concerns, or share his vast level of experience and
knowledge with other Officers. Officer Joseph is never shy about addressing officer safety issues
or operations issues while on patrol or during critical incidents. OfficerJoseph had the opportunity
to work a new K 9 Handler and had done a great job addressing both the positive and negative

Osmolarity Lab Report
To osmo regulate properly in a marine habitat, physiological mechanisms intended to conserve fresh
water and thus avoid dehydration are required. Marine mammals are well adapted to their hyper
osmotic environment. Their cells need to maintain both a water balance and an ion balance and life
depends on the maintenance of the transmembrane potential. The concentrationof potassium ions is
higher in cells than on the extracellular fluid (ECF) and the concentration of sodium ions is higher
in the extracellular fluid.
Osmolarity is describes the total solute concentration. A condition in which the total number of
solutes (i.e. permeable and impermeable) in a solution is the same or equal to the total solutes in
another solution. If two solutions of similar osmolarity are separated by a semi permeable
membrane, there is no tendency for the solvent to move from one compartment to another. Hypo
osmotic and hyper osmotic solutions have a lower and higher osmolalities, respectively. Isotonicity,
hypotonicity and hypertonicity describe the effects of osmolality across a semipermeable
membrane (Brooker, 2008). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Osmoconformers use diffusion to help regulate the concentration of water internally and
externally. Their cell walls are quite permeable, so when exposed to fresh water, they are exposed
to a dilution of their body fluids and this results in a loss of salts. Some have adapted to be able to
withstand temporary or even permanent dilution of the blood (McCarthy,

Spirituality in the Victorian Era Essay
This essay will show why interest in the occult manifested in the Victorian Era and the ways in
which it did. The word occult is defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as; Not apprehended, or
not apprehensible, by the mind; beyond ordinary understanding or knowledge; abstruse,
mysterious; inexplicable. And it is with this definition that we will gain an understanding of the
Victorians interest in occultism, and the very different ways in which these interests were shared
by female spiritualists, as well as those whom had been left spiritually bereft by the work of
Charles Darwin, and the scientific thinkers of the day who believed that their work was for the
greater good of humanity.
In the early 19C Victorian audiences would... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This may have offered comfort to some. Others may have used it as a tool to break the
constraints society held them in. Here we will look why this may have been an attraction for
women. To the average 19c female, who had few rights, was unable to work, with no control
over her own finances and had no access to education, segregated from the opposite sex (including
her own male offspring from the age of four or five) the opportunity for women across the social
strata, to participate in a sГ©ance would have held strong appeal. Offering women the chance to
oppose restrictive social norms.
The sГ©ance reversed the usual sexual hierarchy of knowledge and power: it shifted attention away
from men and focused it on the female medium, the center of spiritual knowledge and insight
Spiritualism was an egalitarian pastime, anyone could join in. To many, communicating with the
spirit world was seen as particularly suited to Victorian female gender roles as that of weak minded,
fragile, suggestible beings who were ruled by emotion rather than intellect:
It was thought that women were naturally more sensitive to spirit communications, especially if
they were uneducated or even slightly subnormal. It was also said that lack of intellectual power

Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse
In the United States alone, nearly 18 million people have an addiction to alcohol. This drug can be
a mild to chronic addiction and sometimes can turn out fatal for some people (Chakraburtty).
Almost 100,000 people have died from overusing this drug (Chakraburtty). Alcoholism and alcohol
abuse is not only damaging emotionally, physically, and mentally to the person who is doing it, but
to the people around them as well. Both alcoholismand alcohol abuseare each categorized as
different cases. Alcohol abuse is different from alcoholism because people who are just alcohol
abusers still have the ability to stop when they need, or to have the common sense to know when
they have had too much. Alcohol abuse is still a very serious case though;... Show more content on

People may think that alcohol may be hard only on the liver, but when someone abuses alcohol it
can affect much more. For example, alcohol has a major effect on the brain. Alcohol has been
known to be a major cause of many suicides, homicides, car accidents, and other death related
topics (Chakraburtty). Many people are naГЇve into thinking that alcohol can and is harmless, but
while they are having that drink to just have a good time, they are unaware of the toll it is taking
on their body. Chronic alcohol use is very hard on your health and can lead to many long lasting
health problems (Chakraburtty). Alcohol is very harmful to other organs as well as the body s
tissue. According to Alcohol s Damaging Effects on the Brain, moderate drinking leads to short
term impairment, but it can also lead to long term impairment as well (Parsons). The long term
impairment that can happen, especially with parents, is the huge effect on the people around the
alcoholic. Parents that have a drinking problem tend to be blinded and cannot see the damage that
is being done. Children who are exposed to any alcoholism may struggle in school, work, and other
activities ( Teens ). Parents who are abusing alcohol pay more attention to their own problems and
trying to cope with them, rather than focusing on their kids and the damage that is possibly
building up in that child. Often times the

US$130 billion, and in 2016, the report luxury goods market more than double to an exceeding sale
of US$388 billion (Fionda Moore, 2008). The significant growth rate in estimated market value

the luxury sector, they manifest an important role in luxury brand recognition among consumers. It
is essential to further investigate the role of flagship stores as they are an integral element of

For distribution partners, a high initial investment into a flagship store opening is crucial to indicate
a belief of viability in the future of the market and to signal brand confidence, strength and viability

have a significant influence on how a luxury fashion brand is perceived and accepted. Fashion
media affect consumers brand awareness and impact luxury flagship stores press (Fionda Moore,

Therefore luxury flagship stores must maintain and build a cpositive relationship with fashion

untenable operating cost. In effect, the British fashion press abandoned all coverage of the brand,
which had adverse effects on the company s reputation and sales. Regarding customer relationship

The Key Of A Well Oiled Team
The key to a well oiled team is a mix of diverse personalities. No matter the type of organization, it
is essential each person who belongs to it blends well and does their part to better themselves as a
whole. There are a million types of teams, from football to dog racing and everything inbetween.
My dogteam consists of four fantastic dogs, each of which have their own spunky personalities.
Boss, a man of wisdom, is the eldest of all the others. Monster, is a vicious licker and will cuddle
people to death. Cinno (Ch EEN Oh) is the wild child, the one who is always wreaking havoc.
Last but not least, D.O.G (Dee Oh Gee), the youngest and most hardheaded dog on the team.
Every team needs someone to lead them and show them the way, typically it is the oldest or the
one with the most experience, which is why Boss is my leader. He is at the front of my line,
teaching the younger dogs and providing them with a good example to learn by. At home, he is
a joyful dog and loves to be pet, but when Boss is at races, there is no fooling around. He is there
to race and finish the job. Boss is so focused on the race when I am harnessing him. He does not
make eye contact with me, he stares at the sled. I imagine he is envisioning himself crossing the
finish line in first place. When I try to fire him up by petting him, he simply wraps his leg around
mine and holds me there. Boss s name suits him perfectly. He acts like he is the boss of the team.

A Picture Of The Kancamagus Highway
Painting a Picture of the Kancamagus Highway The mountains are known for cutting through the
landscape like glaciers. The Kancamagus Highway, or The Fearless One cuts through Lincoln, to
Conway, New Hampshire. Rich in history as well winding roads, and mammoth mountains are
often traveled by the fearless, and adventurous traveler. For some, they stumble upon this great
beauty is small and not appreciated, but for others the venture is a state of mind and continues to
inspire long after the visit is concluded. The Kancamagus Highway evokes the emotion of
nostalgia in every journey. Entering the area I first noticed the mountains, covered in rugs of
green, gold, ember red, and burning orange trees. The mountains were the spines of the land,
holding together the whole landscape. Off to a distance shining white pyramids could be seen.
The tops of the mountains soared up to the sky and to the heavens as to kiss the stars with the
cold peaks. I was just a quiet observer of there glorious range. They stood ghost like, and the only
thing bigger then these slumbering giants was my gaze when taking them in. As I turn from the
outlook, leaving the booming mountains to my back I notice the trees. Making up this glowing
landscape were the burning leaves of the trees. The canopy of color burned with high intensity.
Each leaf was chattering in the wind making up faint rustling, perhaps to keep the forests secret
below. Nature s sympathy was conducting itself is a small crescendo.

Persuasive Essay Why Do We Dream
There is a question that has baffled many psychologists and curious minds for centuries the
question is why do we dream? Do we dream to save our mind from insanity and stress or is it
because it s a natural process? There is one thing for certain though most people dream, the
question is can they remember it. The truth is all creatures can enter a certain type of REM sleep
but it s uncertain if they experience dreams on a human plane of thought. When we enter REM
sleep our Rapid Eye Movement stage of sleep the deepest part of our sleep, the human body
undergoes a temporary paralysis to stop the sleeping person from potential harmful movement. The

Gideon V Wainwright Essay
The foundation of modern right to counsel through court appointed attorneys at the expense of
the government for an indigent defendant accused of a serious crime was made possible by the
ruling in a U.S. Supreme Court landmark case, the case of Gideon v. Wainwright, 372 U.S. 335
(1963). The Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution states: In all criminal
prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right... to have the assistance of counsel for his
defense (U.S. Const. amend. VI). The history of the modern right to counsel dates back to over
a century ago in the Indiana Supreme Court case of Webb v. Baird, 6 In. 13 (1853), in which the
right to counsel for a person accused of a crime was officially recognized (Koplow, 2007).
However, it was not a decision based on constitutional or statutory law, but a decision warranted
under the principles of a civilized society (Koplow, 2007). Since the case of Webb v. Baird, the
right to counsel has immensely extended beyond just appointing an indigent person an attorney. For
over one hundred years, the right... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wainwright, 372 U.S. 335 (1963), the U.S. Supreme court unanimously ruled that the states are

Airbus operates in this industry by building airplanes with seating capacities ranging from 100 to
350 seats. Over the past few years, Airbus has been extremely successful developing airplanes in
this size range, increasing its industry market share to approximately 33%. However, quantifying
Airbus past financial success is difficult because prior to its 1999 1.6 billion euro IPO, Airbus was
a private partnership. As a result, very little past financial information is available.
The following analysis identifies the major strategic issues of Airbus and its industry, provides
alternatives and a recommendation of the most optimal solution, and details a plan of
implementation for the company.
Industry Analysis
The following analysis discusses the suppliers, buyers, industry competition, threats to entry, and
substitutes that exist within the large commercial aircraft industry. Additionally, the analysis
identifies the pressure that each of these groups applies on the industry and estimates the impact
this pressure has on potential industry profits. Each group is identified using a high, medium, or
low pressure classification. A high pressure classification indicates the group reduces industry
profit potential and vice versa. Given the high tech nature of the airplane industry, there are
relatively few suppliers capable of providing parts to Airbus and Boeing. In contrast to Boeing, who
relies heavily on suppliers, Airbus has tried to manufacture the

Democratic Individualism in Walt Whitman Poetry
Democratic Individualism in Whitman s Poetry
Walt Whitman will remain as a well known, superb poet. Clarence Brown stated, the words of
someone speaking on Walt Whitman, He is the only one of the conventionally recognized American
poets who is worth reading (37). Walt Whitman is a poet that writes with purpose. His poetry seems
to attempt to teach the more desirable behavior and traits for Americans. It depicts the ideal
American democrat, peace maker, and a well rounded person, in general. Not that Walt Whitmanis
only about democracy. He focuses on an important end result which is the happiness and function
of the overall body of people. This happiness can be achieved efficiently through democracy and
democratic behavior, according to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Walt Whitman s fame is not just about his passion for democracy. Van Wyck Brooks stated that
the real reason that Whitman is so relevant is that for the first time [he] gave us the sense of
something organic in American life (112) and precipitated the American character (118).
However, democracy is about social equality, fairness, and choice. A democratic body is one that
works together to achieve things that are beneficial to all. To Walt, the goal that was worth
working for was the preservation of those who are ill or injured, especially due to the war.
George Kateb wrote about Whitman and the purpose of democracy. Whitman tries to draw out
the fuller moral and existential significance of rights. There are rights that individuals have as
persons, and that the political system of democracy exists in order to protect, and also to
embody in its workings (546). We appreciate Walt Whitman for explaining the riches of life
while reaping the benefits of democracy. As Kateb stated, individuals have their own identity
within the overall body but they also work towards preserving and benefiting the overall body as
well. So, when citizens are injured or weak, it is our job to be a support system just as Walt
Whitman did many years prior. According to Kateb, This responsiveness or receptivity can also be
described as a way a profoundly democratic way of being connected to

reveals his death is representative of the effective use of simple language on the part of Salinger.
Complex vocabulary is not used because it is not needed the incident stands out more against a
plainer backdrop. The fact that Allie died of Leukaemia also makes the event more devastating.
He died extremely prematurely and Holden s downfall suggests that his death impacted him in a
huge way. Holden was intensely fond of his brother and refers to him throughout the entirety of
the novel. He comments: You would have liked him when personally addressing the reader. We
therefore feel involved in his story and emotion is evoked when we hear of his passing. It also
acts as an explanation for Holden s difficulties. He struggles immensely throughout adolescence as
he fails to accept the transition from childhood to adulthood, perhaps because he described Allie
as mature for his age. This could perhaps be why Holden has such negative associations with
growing older: all he sees ahead is death. Therefore, loss endured by both Holden and Esther leads
to their eventual depressionand isolation from society.
Furthermore, depression and isolation of characters also stems from failure in the academic

Open Source Productivity Tools That Run On Windows
Open Source Productivity Tools that run on Windows
Performers frequently describe a system of rules as being open source or free software. The term
open source adverts to thing that people can change and share because of the reason that, its design
is publicly approachable. This term developed in the context of software evolution to delegate a
particular approach to make computer programs. Nowadays, nevertheless, open source delegates a
wider set of values that we call as the open source way.
Open source tasks, products, or enterprises clench and observe rules of open exchange, cooperative
involvement, fast modeling, opacity, social organization, and community oriented process.
Irrespective of whether a program is open source or not is not the big deal to developers, it finally
concerns for users, too. In short, open source software permits, give users freedoms they would not
differently have.
Idea of Open Source
Suppose that, a program is open source and its source code is freely accessible to its users. Then, its
users and anyone other can have the power to yield this source code, change it as per their
requirement, and dispense their own variants of the program. People also have the power to
dispense as many transcripts of the fresh program as they want. Anyone can utilize the program for
any intent; there are no license fees or different limitations of the software. Image 1 Caption: Open

Analysis Of Travel With Steinbeck
In the novel, Travels With Charley , John Steinbeck goes on a journey across all of America, but
what he inscribed was not just a diary describing the places of which he traveled to, it is a story
composed of smaller stories within the book that he uses to describe what he discovered about
American society along the way. One of the excerpts from Travels With Charley that Steinbeck
wrote is describing a waitress he meets at a small restaurant right outside of Bangor, the financial
struggle she is in, and how there are two different types of people in this world. Also, it describes
when Steinbeck wants so badly to give the waitress a tip, but he doesn t because he believes that
she won t take it. I believe the message that John... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is explaining that the waitress he met at the restaurant, after having a conversation with her, is a
depressing and boring human being. Steinbeck figures this out by noticing that she has a tone in
her voice, which he doesn t describe, but she has a tone that we can detect by the dialogue he
includes in this section of the novel. Also, by the context of the conversation. Steinbeck includes
that the waitress was the type of person that puts a cloud over everyone s heads and brings out not
the positive, but the negative in every situation. He however does not explain a particular person
that brings exuberance to a situation and always blocks out the negative. This is because John
Steinbeck says that the waitress gets him. From this we can infer that he is not normally a happy
and exciting guy. The text says, I d been driving a long time, and perhaps my energy was low and
my resistance down. She got me... For a moment I considered giving her a five dollar tip, but I
know what would happen. She wouldn t be glad. She d think I was crazy(pg. 47). Looking at the
message that John Steinbeck portrays from a different angle, we can see that the reason a person
is such a Buzzkill or a Debbie Downer is because they are constantly in a bad situation from a
financial perspective or from something else. Such as the waitress John Steinbeck meets, who is
struggling financially

Essay on Minimum Wage is The Bare Minimum
Minimum Wage: The Bare Minimum
They work hard every day; they stock our store shelves, wash dishes at our restaurants, clean our
offices at night, care for our kids during the day...They have in common the minimum wage. And
they need a raise, and as you saw, they deserve a raise (Clinton). President Clinton made this speech
on the south lawn of the White House at 10:30 a.m. on the 8th of March 2000. He argued for the
minimum wage hike to go into effect. He argued for the population of the United States who
worked at the federal minimum wage. But was his argument feasible? Would it be practical to raise
the federal minimum wage from its current status of $5.15 an hour, to $6.15 an hour?
President Roosevelt instated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
President Clinton promised to veto the bill just because of the included tax cut. Republicans say the
tax cut was to benefit the businesses being affected by the new minimum wage law. Until the
republicans and the president can reach an agreement over how to pass the minimum wage increase
law, the wage stands at its mere $5.15 an hour (Dateline).
A major problem with raising the minimum wage doesn t even come from our government.
Black teenagers and other minorities have a predicted chance of losing their jobs, along with
many other entry level workers. They are also prevented from getting many other jobs also
because of the simple supply and demand ratios. When our government raises the minimum
wage, they make it illegal for the employer to pay the employee under a certain, mandated limit.
If a job is not worth the minimum wage and doesn t aid the company to create more of a profit in
the long run, then the worker is forbidden from keeping or getting his job. While the average
work force experienced a drop in unemployment over the 1996 minimum wage hike from $4.75 an
hour to $5.15 an hour, the percentage of black teenage boys that were unemployed went from 37 to
41 percent (Lehman). Perhaps the minimum wage law affects more than just average middle class
white teenagers who work for gas money.

Theme Of Magical Realism In One Hundred Years Of Solitude
This research paper highlights Gabriel Jose de la Concordia Garcia Marquez s employment of
magical realism in association to his portrayal of anti colonial sentiments in his novel One Hundred
Years of Solitude. It is the reaction and challenge against the political condition of Latin America
more particularly Columbia in the backdrop of the postcolonial paradigm. The novel depicts the
undulated life of seven generations of Buendia family in the fictitious town, Macondo. Initially
Macondo is pious land but when it comes in to contact with external world, the decline of Macondo
begins. The technologies and inventions of the outer world appear in the form of magic which

When the entity of the real is upset within the realm of narrative, it becomes questionable outside
the boundaries of fiction as well. Garcia Marquez has chronicled the history of violence in Latin
America much expressively throughout his literary career with a subtle use of the technique of
magical realism. His epic novel One Hundred Years of Solitude presents synthesis of historical
events in symbolic episodes of exploitation of the natives at the hands of the American banana
planters and the capitalist exploitation has been uncovered by the author in such episodes. The
reader finds most of his fiction set in an imaginary town of Macondo that stands allegorical for the
Colombian history in specific and Latin American in general. The way MГЎrquez used Macondo
as a place where most of his fiction originates attaches extraordinary importance to this place and
urges the reader to explore this in detail. Being postcolonial in nature, One Hundred Years of
Solitude is an epithet of a shortened version of history. The non linear time format of the novel
stands allegorical for the lengthy process of colonization and how it affected public and private
lives of people. The way colonizers established a distorted

Edna s Search For Identity In The Awakening
The Awakening
Theme:
Do not give into the pressures of society and search for your own identity
Edna lives in a society that expects women to only take care of children and be an obedient wife.
However, Edna feels trapped and does not want to be only limited to being a good wife. One day,
she meets a young man named Robert who helps Edna awaken and she gradually begins to want to
search for her own identity. Therefore, she has sexual awakenings with Alcee, so she can try to
figure out herself. In addition, Edna has another awakening due to her time with Adele and she tries
to find her identity by expressing herself through art in the Pigeon House.
Being an individual against society leads to rejection, loneliness, and isolation.
Edna Pontellier was the only woman in the Grand Isle to try to go against the rules of society

Watching the World through Television
Most of the world can be viewed through the television. Educational programs are aired. News
from all over the world is broadcasted. Anything from sports to music is displayed on the
television. While there are many positive aspects of mass media, to the contrary, there are also
violent programs portrayed. Violencein all aspects of the media has drawn public attention with
practically every novel type of media entertainment (Slotsve et al., 2008). With children being the
main audience, this is a topic that has become highly debatable. Over the years more and more
cases have come to light alleging televisionis the culprit to violence. Beginning in 1994, a three
year study was conducted. This utmost recognized study of violence in television, the National
Television Study, evaluated violence on the television (Slotsve et al., 2008). Through this study, a
trend between violent and belligerent antisocial behavior was documented (Slotsve et al., 2008).
The violence portrayed on the television can create footprints in the child s mind. The paths
become a link to abnormal behavior patterns. In addition, the Surgeon General s Program of
Research also identified a contributory linking between televised violence and antisocial behavior
with children being more affected (Slotsve et al., 2008). The question still remains, is television a
root for violent behavior?
There are a few neurological effects that have been associated with long durations of televisions

The And New Zealand Media Essay
This essay will demonstrate how both American and New Zealand media outlets shape and filter
all their stories and decide what people see and think about, and how to think about certain stories;
also known as Agenda Setting .
New Zealand and America interpret news completely differently, what is important in America may
have zero relevance to New Zealand media and vis versa. Agenda setting is more obvious in the
New York times, they report on specific events to endorse and highlight events or issues in an
attempt persuade their audiences how to think and feel about the stories. Whereas New Zealand
news outlets have a less hidden agenda, trying to remain unbiased in their reporting and changing
the layout and topics on their homepage continuously. This essay will be supported through
Severin Tankard s discussion of Media Framing in Effects of Mass Communication, and also in
Jim Macnamara s concept of agenda setting in Media Effects: A Review of 50 years of Research,
and lastly, M.E. McComb s theory of agenda setting in The Agenda Setting function of Mass Media.
The New York times focused on current events of the Olympics and Donald Trump with the
presidential campaign, more serious and hard news. Whereas Stuff reported on human interest
stories and aimless national and international news. Example being in the NY times, the two long
main stories on both days are referring to the Olympics and Michael Phelps. But Stuff only

the many outcomes by its use, they should be banned.

since they would have to put the taser back together properly and make sure the probe cartridge is

there are precautions one would have to take to be safe from harm to themselves.
To avoid being tased, there are safety measures one should take such as when loading and
unloading the taser s cartridges. One must hold the taser on the device s either side or top. These

2.Point the device in a safe direction.
3.Depress the tabs on the sides of the cartridge and remove. (38)

Once they were downstairs in the living room Cody went to the dining table to color and Emily was

Hilary Radner has noted Nancy Meyers as being neo feminist because of her view of
heterosexual men whom she often portrays as being highly disadvantaged up to the point of
suffering a disability and her obvious interest in older women who are portrayed as very
successful career women (2011). Her films which are targeting the female audience, as Radner
observes, are combining two major disabilities as impediments to love: masculinity and advancing
age. Meyer based her film Something s Gotta Give on her own experience as a singleton in her
fifties, making Diane Keaton an even bigger star persona who won a Golden Globe, an NBR Award
and also a Golden Satellite Award for her role in the film, as Erica. Keaton s character Erica
Barry is thin and fit with a natural look and mid length hair. When she appears in her date dress
which is a classic little black dress (LBD was highly popularized by Chanel) she catches the eye
of both Harry Sanborn (Jack Nicholson) and Julian Mercer (Keanu Reeves). Radner claims that
Erica functions as an alter ego of director Nancy Meyers whose stylistic choices somehow
displace Keaton s established persona, as Keaton herself stated Clearly, Erica is more Nancy
than me (Hilary Radner, 2011: 175). The film tells the story of Erica, a divorced playwright in her
fifties who falls in love with her daughter s much older boyfriend, Harry Sanborn who is a playboy
known for dating only young women. Doctor Julian

memory capacity of the individual and their ability to effectively engage in the distraction
technique. This study aims to extend on previous research pertaining to working memory capacity,
distractibility and pain perception. The objective of this study is to observe the effect distraction
has on altering painperception relative to an individual s working memorycapacity. In this study we
will utilize the operational span task (OSPAN) developed by Turner and Engle (1989) to split the
participants into high and low working memory span groups dependent on their OSPAN scores.
Participants will then engage in a simulated pain task under two conditions: distraction and no
distraction. This study will include 40 participants; 20 in the low working memory span group and
20 in the high working memory span group. We expect that the low working memory span group
will, on average, report higher pain ratings than the high working memory span group in the
experimental (distraction) condition. We hope that this study will show that the inverse relationship
between working memory and distractibility will have an effect on how people perceive pain. We
hope that the current study will guide future research in exploring alternative non pharmacological
methods to relieve pain.

Relationship Between Democracy And Economic Growth
Economic growth of a country is something that depends on a number of factors. In this
dissertation, I will investigate the effect of democracy and political freedom on economic
growth. Both democracy and autocracy have various examples of leading countries to economic
growth as well as deterioration of the economy. Along with the nature of the political regime in
the nation there are several other factors that influence economic growth in a country. I will also
look in detail at the effects of these variables on growth and will also later isolate their effects
since the direct relationship between political regime and growth can be established. Looking at
non democracy in countries such as China and the Arab countries, one may feel that democratic
institutions are not important for economic growth. Some may even go ahead and term it as a
disturbance in the path of growth, for instance in a paper written by Daren Acemoglu et al titled
Democracy Does Cause Growth , the authors described the view that some consider democracy a
hindrance. Robert Barro presents the academic view on the issue and says that the key lesson to
be learnt is that democracy is not a key to growth and neither do more political rights mean that
there are more chances of economic growth (Barro 1997, pp. 1 and 11). The literature written with
regards to the relationship between democracy and growth mainly suggests that there is a
relationship in existence. Robert J Barro published a paper in 1996 where he

problem in frequency selective wireless environment. An interesting application of ... Show more

In OFDM systems, only a one user can transmit on all of the subcarriers at any given time, and
time division multiple access (TDMA) or frequency division multiple access (FDMA) is used to
support multiple users. The major disadvantage of this static multiple access scheme is that the fact
that the different users perform differently in the same given wireless channel is not being taken in
consideration. OFDMA, on the other hand, allows multiple users to transmit simultaneously on the
different subcarriers per OFDM symbol at any given time. Since the users perform differently in
the channel probability that all users experience the same fade in a particular subcarrier is very
low, though it can be assured that the subcarriers are assigned to the users who sees good channel
gains on them.
While allowing simultaneous access to multiple users to the medium OFDMA has been shown to
reduce multi path fading, within air interfaces in the IEEE 802.16 standard.
The main advantages of using this multicarrier technology are: higher data rates, longer
transmission distance, and better mobility support.
Due to the fact that OFDMA divides the available frequency spectrum into several orthogonal
subcarriers, inter symbol and inter carrier interference are minimized, or even eradicated. Also, the
assignment of these subcarriers to different users for transmission can be done dynamically, both in
frequency and time dimension. This flexibility provides a way of boosting

finding out how hard the architects and designers worked so hard to make it an accessible place
for all. The Louvre was originally created in the early 12th century while Francewas under the 43
year reign of Phillipe Auguste. During this time, a barricade was built to protect Parisfrom the
Anglo Norman threat. France reinforced its defense with a fortress, which is today known as
The Musee de Louvre. I found it neat that The Louvre was created so long ago and for such a
different purpose. Most major places, such as the Palace of Versailles, were created to be a
palace for the people to live in, but the Louvre was created for a much greater purpose: to protect
the city. I believe that its original purpose has a huge affect on why it is so well known and
means so much to the country of France today. In the first few years of the life of The Louvre, a...

After that, work began to open three new galleries of antique art. When I was in Paris, I was
lucky enough to go to the Louvre multiple times. The second time I went, I spend almost my
whole time visiting the Egyptian antique section. I have always been interested in Egyptian
history and I think that this was my favorite section by far. There were just so many things to see
while there, but specifically I enjoyed the sphinx and the mummies. I have never seen a mummy in
real life and to be able to check that one off my bucket list was

Well, Prince, so Genoa and Lucca are now just family estates of the Buonapartes. But I warn
you, if you don t tell me that this means war, if you still try to defend the infamies and horrors
perpetrated by that Antichrist I really believe he is Antichrist I will have nothing more to do
with you and you are no longer my friend, no longer my faithful slave, as you call yourself! But
how do you do? I see I have frightened you sit down and tell me all the news. It was in July,
1805, and the speaker was the well known Anna Pavlovna Scherer, maid of honor and favorite of
the Empress Marya Fedorovna. With these words she greeted Prince Vasili Kuragin, a man of high
rank and importance, who was the first to arrive at her reception. Anna Pavlovna... Show more

If you were not a father there would be nothing I could reproach you with, said Anna Pavlovna,
looking up pensively. I am your faithful slave and to you alone I can confess that my children
are the bane of my life. It is the cross I have to bear. That is how I explain it to myself. It can t be
helped! He said no more, but expressed his resignation to cruel fate by a gesture. Anna Pavlovna
meditated. Have you never thought of marrying your prodigal son Anatole? she asked. They say
old maids have a mania for matchmaking, and though I don t feel that weakness in myself as
yet,I know a little person who is very unhappy with her father. She is a relation of yours, Princess
Mary Bolkonskaya. Prince Vasili did not reply, though, with the quickness of memory and
perception befitting a man of the world, he indicated by a movement of the head that he was
considering this information. Do you know, he said at last, evidently unable to check the sad
current of his thoughts, that Anatole is costing me forty thousand rubles a year? And, he went on
after a pause, what will it be in five years, if he goes on like this? Presently he added: That s what
we fathers have to put up with.... Is this princess of yours

As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention. With literally no marketing budget, startups
are forced to seek the optimal and probably most basic way of seeking customers: Focus on who
they are and where they are. You can t spend millions of dollars to build your brand name and
mindshare before influencing the consumers to purchase your product. So, what do you do? You
tweak your product until it meets their needs and you hit the viral button to make growth sky
rocket exponentially. It is a matter of survival for startups. You have no luxury of time nor money
as it is a matter of life and death for your business. The whole company is focused on the same
goal: Get the product right for the customers to justify the existence of the startup.
We now have a term for this: Growth Hacking. This term was coined by Sean Ellis in 2010 where
he blog about a growth hacker as a person whose true north is growth. Everything they do is
scrutinized by its potential impact on scalable growth . This term was introduced by Andrew Chen to

America s Free Trade Agreement
Most people from Mexico, just like in Veracruz, lived a simple life. Their means of income was
through farming, so obviously this was their bread and butter, but not until when NAFTA, the
North America Free Trade Agreement, was implemented between the United States, Mexico, and
Canada (The Other Side of Immigration). Urrea states you d think that at least there would be
beans to eat, but the great Mexican bean growing industrial farms sold much of their crop to the
United States(45). Since then, most Mexicans, especially those people from Veracruz, was affected.
Even though the primary reason for this agreement was to eliminate trade and investment barriers
between Canada, U.S., and Mexicoto make produce less expensive, this brought a... Show more

Although the agricultural sector of Mexico was affected by NAFTA, the country has another source
of income to keep their economy running gasoline and oil, tourism, and the remittance that is being
sent through Western Union by families, who earn money in the United States, to their loved ones
in Mexico. It was documented in 2008 that there were $25 billion that was sent back to Mexico
(The Other Side of Immigration), but even though the country [Mexico] earns through oil, tourism,
and remittance, it was still not helpful for the Welton 26 and most Mexicans who migrated illegally
to have job opportunities. That is why many Mexicans like the Welton 26 illegally migrated to the
United States for better opportunities and to earn more money to provide for the ones they left
behind.
Another sad truth why the Welton 26 and most Mexicans chose to migrate illegally here in the
United States was because the economy of Mexico is in a dilapidated situation because of the
corruption of their government officials. Most Mexicans would say that they are suffering because
they are neglected by their politicians no matter how hard they work (The Other Side of
Immigration). Urrea shares, and in the economy of hunger, which the fat men of the governments
did not understand, more mouths meant more

  • 2. Nursing Impairment Nowadays, the preferred pathway for a nurse discovered at work under the influence of drugs or alcohol is support and treatment rather than being fired on the spot. The intended goal is that after treatment and rehabilitation the nurse may eventually return to work. But a vital element in this plan is early intervention. We have already noted that for evidence of impairment at work to appear, the use of the substance may have been going on for quite some time. So, in aiming for a successful outcome the clock is already an enemy. As we look at some of the signs that may indicate impairment through substance use, now seems a good time to remind ourselves that substance abuse may not be the only possible explanation for the impairment. But whatever ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The IPN was: established in 1983 through legislative action to ensure public health and safety through a program that provides close monitoring of nurses who are unsafe to practice due to impairment as a result of misuse or abuse of alcohol or drugs, or both, or due to a mental or physical condition which could affect the licensee s ability to practice with skill and safety. (Intervention Project for Nurses [IPN], n.d. b. para. 1) The realization that, when suffering from a substance use disorder, a nurse deserves the same care and treatment that we would offer to anyone else has led to the development of these alternative to discipline programs around the country, and in Florida it is the IPN. Its programs allow nurses to receive treatment and rehabilitation in a non punitive manner. If the nurse agrees to withdraw from practice and complete the program the IPN will then facilitate the successful return of that nurse to practice, all the while maintaining confidentiality even from the Board of Nursing. However, if a nurse agrees to these conditions and then reneges, the IPN will forward the file to the Department of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, one of the important problems addressed is the conflict is self identify due to the lack of visibility as it relates to the main character. In questioning one s visibility, you must begin by understanding your own self identity and existence. Ellison uses the main character to explore the many social problems that were a direct reflection of African Americans post civil war, and reconstructive era. In comparison to Prince Arjuna I believe that both philosophers possess the qualities and characteristics of very wise men. In this essay I am going to compare two philosophers who may have had different values but similar beliefs. In Socrates The Apology Socrates explained to the public why he should not be put to death because of his choice to believe in another God. The people of Athens were lead to believe that Socrates was also corrupting the youth to believe in other Gods as well. Marine mammals are well adapted to their hyper osmotic environment. Their cells need to maintain both a water balance and an ion balance and life depends on the maintenance of the transmembrane potential. The concentrationof potassium ions is higher in cells than on the extracellular fluid (ECF) and the concentration of sodium ions is higher in the extracellular fluid. Osmolarity is describes the total solute concentration. A condition in which the total number of solutes (i.e. permeable and impermeable) in a solution is the same or equal to the total solutes in another solution. If two solutions of similar osmolarity are separated by a semi permeable membrane, there is no tendency for the solvent to move from one compartment to another. And it is with this definition that we will gain an understanding of the Victorians interest in occultism, and the very different ways in which these interests were shared by female spiritualists, as well as those whom had been left spiritually bereft by the work of Charles Darwin, and the scientific thinkers of the day who believed that their work was for the greater good of humanity. To the average 19c female, who had few rights, was unable to work, with no control over her own finances and had no access to education, segregated from the opposite sex (including her own male offspring from the age of four or five) the opportunity for women across the social strata, to participate in a sГ©ance would have held strong appeal. Offering women the chance to oppose restrictive social norms. The sГ©ance reversed the usual sexual hierarchy of knowledge and power: it shifted attention away from men and focused it on the female medium, the center of spiritual knowledge and insight Spiritualism was an egalitarian pastime, anyone could join in. To many, communicating with the spirit world was seen as particularly suited to Victorian female gender roles as that of weak minded, fragile, suggestible beings who were ruled by emotion rather than intellect: It was thought that women were naturally more sensitive to spirit communications, especially if they were uneducated or even slightly subnormal. Van Wyck Brooks stated that the real reason that Whitman is so relevant is that for the first time [he] gave us the sense of something organic in American life (112) and precipitated the American character (118). However, democracy is about social equality, fairness, and choice. A democratic body is one that works together to achieve things that are beneficial to all. To Walt, the goal that was worth working for was the preservation of those who are ill or injured, especially due to the war. George Kateb wrote about Whitman and the purpose of democracy. Whitman tries to draw out the fuller moral and existential significance of rights. There are rights that individuals have as persons, and that the political system of democracy exists in order to protect, and also to embody in its workings (546). Holden s younger brother Allie passed away in 1946, and has haunted Holden ever since. He states: He s dead now. He got Leukaemia and died. The bluntness with which Holden reveals his death is representative of the effective use of simple language on the part of Salinger. Complex vocabulary is not used because it is not needed the incident stands out more against a plainer backdrop. The fact that Allie died of Leukaemia also makes the event more devastating. He died extremely prematurely and Holden s downfall suggests that his death impacted him in a huge way. Holden was intensely fond of his brother and refers to him throughout the entirety of the novel. He comments: You would have liked him when personally addressing the reader. We therefore feel involved in his story and emotion is evoked when we hear of his passing. It also acts as an explanation for Holden s difficulties. He struggles immensely throughout adolescence as he fails to accept the transition from childhood to adulthood, perhaps because he described Allie as mature for his age. One of the excerpts from Travels With Charley that Steinbeck wrote is describing a waitress he meets at a small restaurant right outside of Bangor, the financial struggle she is in, and how there are two different types of people in this world. Steinbeck figures this out by noticing that she has a tone in her voice, which he doesn t describe, but she has a tone that we can detect by the dialogue he includes in this section of the novel. Also, by the context of the conversation. Steinbeck includes that the waitress was the type of person that puts a cloud over everyone s heads and brings out not the positive, but the negative in every situation. He however does not explain a particular person that brings exuberance to a situation and always blocks out the negative. This is because John Steinbeck says that the waitress gets him. President Clinton promised to veto the bill just because of the included tax cut. Republicans say the tax cut was to benefit the businesses being affected by the new minimum wage law. Until the republicans and the president can reach an agreement over how to pass the minimum wage increase law, the wage stands at its mere $5.15 an hour (Dateline). A major problem with raising the minimum wage doesn t even come from our government. Black teenagers and other minorities have a predicted chance of losing their jobs, along with many other entry level workers. They are also prevented from getting many other jobs also because of the simple supply and demand ratios. When our government raises the minimum wage, they make it illegal for the employer to pay the employee under a certain, mandated limit. If a job is not worth the minimum wage and doesn t aid the company to create more of a profit in the long run, then the worker is forbidden from keeping or getting his job. While the average work force experienced a drop in unemployment over the 1996 minimum wage hike from $4.75 an hour to $5.15 an hour, the percentage of black teenage boys that were unemployed went from 37 to 41 percent (Lehman). The novel depicts the undulated life of seven generations of Buendia family in the fictitious town, Macondo. Garcia Marquez has chronicled the history of violence in Latin America much expressively throughout his literary career with a subtle use of the technique of magical realism. His epic novel One Hundred Years of Solitude presents synthesis of historical events in symbolic episodes of exploitation of the natives at the hands of the American banana planters and the capitalist exploitation has been uncovered by the author in such episodes. The reader finds most of his fiction set in an imaginary town of Macondo that stands allegorical for the Colombian history in specific and Latin American in general. The way MГЎrquez used Macondo as a place where most of his fiction originates attaches extraordinary importance to this place and urges the reader to explore this in detail. Being postcolonial in nature, One Hundred Years of Solitude is an epithet of a shortened version of history. The non linear time format of the novel stands allegorical for the lengthy process of colonization and how it affected public and private lives of people. Anything from sports to music is displayed on the television. While there are many positive aspects of mass media, to the contrary, there are also violent programs portrayed. Violencein all aspects of the media has drawn public attention with practically every novel type of media entertainment (Slotsve et al., 2008). With children being the main audience, this is a topic that has become highly debatable. Over the years more and more cases have come to light alleging televisionis the culprit to violence. Beginning in 1994, a three year study was conducted. This utmost recognized study of violence in television, the National Television Study, evaluated violence on the television (Slotsve et al., 2008). Through this study, a trend between violent and belligerent antisocial behavior was documented (Slotsve et al., 2008). The violence portrayed on the television can create footprints in the child s mind. The paths become a link to abnormal behavior patterns. In addition, the Surgeon General s Program of Research also identified a contributory linking between televised violence and antisocial behavior with children being more affected (Slotsve et al., 2008). The And New Zealand Media Essay This essay will demonstrate how both American and New Zealand media outlets shape and filter all their stories and decide what people see and think about, and how to think about certain stories; also known as Agenda Setting . New Zealand and America interpret news completely differently, what is important in America may have zero relevance to New Zealand media and vis versa. Agenda setting is more obvious in the New York times, they report on specific events to endorse and highlight events or issues in an attempt persuade their audiences how to think and feel about the stories. Whereas New Zealand news outlets have a less hidden agenda, trying to remain unbiased in their reporting and changing the layout and topics on their homepage continuously. Hilary Radner has noted Nancy Meyers as being neo feminist because of her view of heterosexual men whom she often portrays as being highly disadvantaged up to the point of suffering a disability and her obvious interest in older women who are portrayed as very successful career women (2011). Her films which are targeting the female audience, as Radner observes, are combining two major disabilities as impediments to love: masculinity and advancing age. Meyer based her film Something s Gotta Give on her own experience as a singleton in her fifties, making Diane Keaton an even bigger star persona who won a Golden Globe, an NBR Award and also a Golden Satellite Award for her role in the film, as Erica. Keaton s character Erica Barry is thin and fit with a natural look and mid length hair. When she appears in her date dress which is a classic little black dress (LBD was highly popularized by Chanel) she catches the eye of both Harry Sanborn (Jack Nicholson) and Julian Mercer (Keanu Reeves). This study aims to extend on previous research pertaining to working memory capacity, distractibility and pain perception. The objective of this study is to observe the effect distraction has on altering painperception relative to an individual s working memorycapacity. In this study we will utilize the operational span task (OSPAN) developed by Turner and Engle (1989) to split the participants into high and low working memory span groups dependent on their OSPAN scores. Participants will then engage in a simulated pain task under two conditions: distraction and no distraction. This study will include 40 participants; 20 in the low working memory span group and 20 in the high working memory span group. We expect that the low working memory span group will, on average, report higher pain ratings than the high working memory span group in the experimental (distraction) condition. We hope that this study will show that the inverse relationship between working memory and distractibility will have an effect on how people perceive pain. We hope that the current study will guide future research in exploring alternative non pharmacological methods to relieve pain. • 42. Relationship Between Democracy And Economic Growth Economic growth of a country is something that depends on a number of factors. In this dissertation, I will investigate the effect of democracy and political freedom on economic growth. Both democracy and autocracy have various examples of leading countries to economic growth as well as deterioration of the economy. Along with the nature of the political regime in the nation there are several other factors that influence economic growth in a country. I will also look in detail at the effects of these variables on growth and will also later isolate their effects since the direct relationship between political regime and growth can be established. Looking at non democracy in countries such as China and the Arab countries, one may feel that democratic institutions are not important for economic growth. Some may even go ahead and term it as a disturbance in the path of growth, for instance in a paper written by Daren Acemoglu et al titled Democracy Does Cause Growth , the authors described the view that some consider democracy a hindrance. Robert Barro presents the academic view on the issue and says that the key lesson to be learnt is that democracy is not a key to growth and neither do more political rights mean that there are more chances of economic growth (Barro 1997, pp. 1 and 11). The literature written with regards to the relationship between democracy and growth mainly suggests that there is a relationship in existence. Robert J Barro published a paper in 1996 where he ... OFDMA, on the other hand, allows multiple users to transmit simultaneously on the different subcarriers per OFDM symbol at any given time. While allowing simultaneous access to multiple users to the medium OFDMA has been shown to reduce multi path fading, within air interfaces in the IEEE 802.16 standard. The main advantages of using this multicarrier technology are: higher data rates, longer transmission distance, and better mobility support. Due to the fact that OFDMA divides the available frequency spectrum into several orthogonal subcarriers, inter symbol and inter carrier interference are minimized, or even eradicated. The one thing that I do regret coming into this was not knowing the background and history of the Louvre and a majority of its works. After doing some research, I came across the history and mission of The Musee de Louvreand I was fascinated with what I read: from knowing that The Louvre was originally created as a fortress to finding out how hard the architects and designers worked so hard to make it an accessible place for all. The Louvre was originally created in the early 12th century while Francewas under the 43 year reign of Phillipe Auguste. During this time, a barricade was built to protect Parisfrom the Anglo Norman threat. France reinforced its defense with a fortress, which is today known as The Musee de Louvre. I found it neat that The Louvre was created so long ago and for such a different purpose. Most major places, such as the Palace of Versailles, were created to be a palace for the people to live in, but the Louvre was created for a much greater purpose: to protect the city.
