Cervical Smoking Research Papers
Women are also targeted when it comes to cigarettes. According to some, Many girls and women are
more concerned about looking good than about the long term health effects (Sasman 23). Strong
evidence points to the connection between smoking and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia; which is the
abnormal growth of squamous cells on the cervix. CIN is curable; however, cervical cancer is a
consequence from it if left untreated. According to Saules study, Cervical Cancer is now well
established as a smoking related illness (207), claiming 5,000 lives annually. In the Journal of College
health, the rate of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and cervical cancer is elevated in smokers.

Brief leaflets on the connection of smoking and cervical cancer have shown to be effective; however,
in efforts to make more and younger women mindful, a study was designed to research the
possibilities. According to Saules, increasing this awareness may help with the cessation efforts
caused by cervical cancer (208). The 135 female students who participated were in between the ages
of 18 and 24 with various smoking status. The procedures were approved by the Eastern Michigan
University Human subjects review board with the average age of about 20 years old and completed
about 2 years of college, 78% Caucasian and 17% African American. First, participants were asked to
rate their risk of developing heart disease, lung disease and cervical cancer. According to this study,
participants were asked to indicate which of the following they believed would increase the risk of
developing cervical cancer by answering yes or no to each: HPV, oral contraceptive use, changing
sexual partners, smoking, alcohol use, not using a condom, low fiber diet, cervical dysplasia, and
having an abortion. Participants were also asked to determine whether they considered themselves as a
smoker, ex smoker or non smoker. Past month smokers sought themselves likely in the average and
above average category for heart disease and lung disease. Also, past month smokers

Reasoning behind the Female Genital Circumcision
Topic: FGC Reasoning behind the Female genital circumcision. General Purpose: To inform my
audience Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about female genital circumcision and why it is
practiced. Thesis: Female Genital Circumcision is a cultural procedure that is performed on young
girls for a variety of reasons. Members of this culture chose to continue these traditions because they
believe they will gain sociological, health and marriage benefits for their daughters, ensuring these
young girls a better future is mandatory. I. Introduction A. Attention Getter: How many of you have
ever looked at someone and wondered why they dresses or behaved in a certain way? The reasoning
being these choices can differ depending on their background lifestyle. The way we are raised can
have a huge impact in the way we behave. Introduce your topic: For those who are not familiar with
FGC, it is a cultural practice that has been around for thousands of years. As defined by the World
Health Organization female genitalia circumcision comprises all procedures involving partial or total
removal of the external genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non medical reasons.
B. Reason to Listen: I believe that the members of this culture continue to participate in this procedure
because they truly believe in the benefits this practice will bring not only to their families but also to
their society. The members of this culture claim that the reasoning

Ed Zwick’s Glory
Ed Zwick s Glory An Exemplary Model for Historical Films
History, I am convinced, is not just something to be left to the historians. Warren Susman
[1] From a critic s point of view, what is there not to scrutinize when a white, Jewish filmmaker is
responsible for a historical film about African Americans during the Civil War? One which happens to
have a brave young Boston Brahmin as the supposed leader of a colored battalion? Surely he does not
have the license to create a film based on a heritage with which he has no affinity. Director Ed Zwick
was apprehensive with the task and struggled with his entitlement to create such a film.
I was afraid initially that a young, white, liberal, Jewish director would be ... Show more content on

The critic does point out that Glory is by no means flawless, citing historical discrepancies;
nevertheless, a sound approval is given.
[3] From a supportive angle, Morgan Freeman, an academy award nominee black actor, fully backs
every aspect of the project. Freeman was not only ecstatic about the idea for the film, but he also
defended Zwick and screenwriter Kevin Jarre from criticisms about the film s alleged whiteness. In
rebuttal to a charge by Roger Ebert that Glory concentrates too much on the white point of view,
Freeman claimed:
I don t have a problem with that. You cannot reasonably ask a white writer to do it differently. Now, if
we re going to start citing some unfortunates, it might be unfortunate that a black writer didn t write it,
but if a black writer had written it, there s a good chance he wouldn t have found a producer. So there
you are. This is a movie that did get made, and a story did get told, and that s what is important.
Reportedly, Freeman was so adamant about the film s script that he approached Zwick in the
auditioning stages, pleading, Whatever you want, you ve got me. Moreover, he and co star Denzel
Washington (1989, Best Supporting Actor, Glory) took significant pay cuts to make the film a success
for the sake of art and history.

Racial Stereotypes Of Deaf And Deaf
Cultural stereotypes used to consider deafness to be a great misfortune, but being deaf does not limit
the abilities of a person. Members of the Deaf community consider deafness to be normal rather than a
disability. A deaf people can do anything a hearing person can do, such as, drive, participate in group
activities, communicate, and have normal lives. Deaf In the film Through Deaf Eyes , an HDTV
documentary including interviews, personal stories, and historic accounts, the prejudice and
affirmation of Deaf culture is revealed to show hearing people the reality of deaf life. Through this
film, I have learned about education for deaf people, the Deaf President Now Movement, and about
cochlear implants. The Fist thing I learned from watching Through Deaf Eyes is the differences
between deaf speaking schools and deaf ASL schools. Deaf speaking schools teach deaf people to
communicate using speech through speech therapy. Speaking schools are good because they enables a
deaf person to learn speech to talk with a hearing person. The problem with speaking schools is that
they are not always effective and ban the use of ASL. Speech therapy creates a one way method of
communication between a deaf person and a hearing person. With speech a deaf person is able to
speak with a hearing person, but they are still not able to hear the person they are talking to. Unlike
speaking schools, ASL schools teach their students to communicate with sign language. ASL is a
language that uses

The Horror Of All Vacations
I, as a second grade girl, had never smelled anything so foul or seen anything so gross. I could smell
something decaying through the crisp summer breeze in Wisconsin. While going through the cabin, I
found the most disgusting items and problems around the little cabin.Seeing the horrifying sight of
blood splattered against the white bathroom walls. Cockroaches were scurrying around the wooden
floors of the kitchen. Glass fragments all over the sticky, cold, wooden kitchen floors. I knew this was
going to be the horror of all vacations.
I knew that my family had a problem as soon as we stepped out of our red Ford minivan. This place
looked like a tornado went right through it. Soon after getting out of the car, I smelled the ... Show

We got into the cabin that we would stay at for a week, and the name of the cabin was Brown Jug.
When we first walk in there were no doors, just curtains hanging from the hinges of the doorways for
doors.
My mom spoke in a sarcastic tone, Great privacy this place has.
Walking throughout the rest of the house, I saw the small dingy bathroom with plumbing coming out
of the walls with holes everywhere and scum on the water on the shower walls. Looking at the mess in
the bathroom, I saw the walls covered in dried blood. My mom rushed everyone out of the bathroom
in a disgusted manner said, That is the most disgusting thing I have ever seen, even more than the
hospital that I use to work at.
No one goes into that bathroom until I wash it. my mom stated.
Soon after that issue everyone went to the tiny size living room which was about the size of a nice size
store bathroom.
Dad muttered under his breath, I wonder what else is wrong with this dump?
Sitting down on the uncomfortable furniture that was available for us in the cabin. When sat down on
the couch that was so uncomfortable, whenever we moved around, we heard a crumpled noise in the
cushions of the couch. We unzip the cushion and saw crumpled up pieces of newspaper inside instead
of the foam that was suppose to be there.

My Finger Printing And Palm Prints
My Finger Printing and Palm Printing Adventure
On November 10th 2015, I went to the Bridgeport Police Department to get my fingerprints, as well as
my palm prints done by a lady named Debbie Ayers. Mrs. Ayers works for the Federal Bureau of
Investigation actually in the fingerprinting department, so it was nice because she had tons of
interesting information about this subject! When it comes to fingerprinting, there are various types of
inks and methods used to carry out the process. For instance, there is the chemical method which is
where a red porelon pad ink is used. After the fingerprints are taken, the next step in the chemical
method would be to put the ten print card into a heating element which would make the ink come out

the adoption process. Anyway, after she obtained the FD 249 fingerprint card, she started the process.
One by one, she placed my fingertips into the ink and then rolled them from one side of my fingernail
to the other. Mrs. Ayers followed the FATT principle to obtain my fingerprints. FATT stands for
fingers away, thumbs in and this principle is used because it assists obtaining fingerprints the correct
way. In addition, Mrs. Ayers advised me to how critical it was that each fingerprint was put in the
correct location on each card because a mistake like this could make an investigator or police officer
believe they have the wrong person which could ultimately allow that criminal to walk free. Once she
completed my rolled fingerprints, she obtained all of my fingers from each hand and recorded them on
the bottom of the card at a forty five degree angle. These are used to make sure the rolled fingertip
impressions matched by comparing the two. After she finished obtaining my fingerprints she then
proceeded to capture a print of my palm. She used the same ink that she had rolled out onto the steel
slate. She then took the

Characteristics Of The Sanguine
The word sanguine is originated from old French Sanguine, from Latin Sanguineus meaning of blood
or bloody and Sanguis meaning blood . According to the medieval physiology, the sanguine
characters, like cheerfulness, optimism, hopefulness etc are reflection of excess of blood as one of the
four body humors. Sanguine describes the personality of an individual with the temperament related to
blood, the spring weather (wet and hot), and the element of air. The sanguine individual suddenly gets
excited by whatever affects him with immediate reaction, but it is not too deep and the impression
doesn t last long. Some chief characteristics of the Sanguine Temperament are, Diplomatic While
talking, the sanguines usually use very pleasing words; they speak in a way that avoids offending
others. This character makes them much friendly and pleasing to talk with. Still, at times they may
hurt the feeling of others through their direct and frank words i.e. something bitter truth . But, actually
they do not intend to offend; rather it is due to their open hearted nature. Enthusiastic Sanguines are

The Sixties Exposed in Takin it to the Streets and The Dharma Bums
One cannot undertake any study of the 1960s in America without hearing about the struggles for social
change. From civil rights to freedom of speech, civil disobedience and nonviolent protest became a
central part of the sixties culture, albeit representative of only a small portion of the population. As
Mario Savio, a Free Speech Movement (FSM) leader, wrote in an essay in 1964: The most exciting
things going on in America today are movements to change America ( Takin it to the Streets, 115). His
essay is critical of those that maintain the status quo and oppose change in America. It seems quite
obvious that change has occurred as a result of the efforts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Dharma Bums. Ray and the other dharma bums lived on little money and enjoyed nature. Ray
traveled cross country hitchhiking and jumping on trains from California to North Carolina and back
more than once on only a few dollars and while at home in North Carolina for Christmas he sat in the
woods with his dog much of the time and preferred to sleep in a sleeping bag outside on the porch
rather than inside his mother s home. This love of nature and desire to live a very meager lifestyle in
opposition to the working class prosperity seems to be more in opposition to the changing culture,
which was becoming more automated and industry driven, than it was trying to illicit change.
Regarding automation and middle class prosperity, it seems that Kerouac and others feared the loss of
nature to industry as well as one s time to be able to enjoy nature.
The fight against automation was however, somewhat subservient to the goal of social change
regarding individual rights. The civil rights movement sought changes to the system of racial injustice.
Resistance to this movement helped bring about the FSM and the fight for one s rights to free speech
and assembly. The FSM was a movement dedicated to promoting equality and individual rights, yet it
maintained the

Cooking Is Cooking Essay
Cooking is a necessity for everyone. Everyone in their life time needs to learn how to cook because
cooking makes food taste better. Without cooking, everyone would eat raw fruits, vegetables etc. I am
still learning how to cook but I consider it my hobby. Cooking is my hobby because I can spend time
with my family, it is fun and because of the Food Network Channel. I now a days rarely spend time
with my family. I am busy with homework, college applications and ACT/SAT tests. I have no time to
sit down a chat with my family. I love my family every much, but I could be better of spending my
time finishing all that I have to do to make time for my family. One of the few times I get to spend
with my family is by cooking. I usually help my mom cook lunch and dinner during the weekends and
cook with my dad on the weekdays. I am still a beginner. I can only the basic breakfast items like
eggs, pancakes etc. Whenever I help my parents out, I am always learning and I get to spend time with
time. When the food is cooking and I have to stand watching the pot till it is done, I talk with my mom

make a conclusion about adjusting that ingredient amounts and temperature etc. Cooking opens up a
possibility of anything to happen. I can make something really good that I didn t expect to make, or I
can make something bad that it causes some people to go to the hospital. I hope I don t hurt people
with my cooking; I am not a professional, but I am decent. Cooking is fun and entertaining on the rare

Conclusion:
1 Recommendations regarding dealing with minorities
When the word Empire is heard, people tend to think of a hegemonic state with an emperor that
oppresses all those who oppose him. Such an impression is not the result of nothingness, but that of
shallow knowledge of certain empires that prevailed in the pre modern and early modern world.
However, before we get into details about how minorities were dealt with, we have to define our
terms. The first term to be defined is minority ; which according to Richard T. Schaefer means a
subordinate group whose members have significantly less control or power over their lives than
members of a dominant or majority group.
There are certain characteristics for minority groups. The first is that they have a distinguishing
physical or cultural trait. Such a case is manifested regarding the Hijab in France, or the use of
Kurdish language by Lebanese Kurds. The second is being treated unequally, and having less control
over one s life, as was the case with Africans in South Africa. The third characteristic is having
involuntary membership, with no personal choice being employed in the process. That characteristic is
to be observed with African Americans born to slave parents. A fifth and highly important

Disadvantages And Disadvantages Of Coal Energy
In Ohio, the type of energy we use are coal, natural gas, and nuclear. While these assets are discovered
normally in the earth and create a lot of power, nonrenewable take a long time to form a shape, and
there is a restricted supply accessible for individuals to use for power era. Motor vehicles and
transportation, food, beverage, and tobacco items; manufactured metals and hardware generation
likewise make significant commitments to the state s total output. Renewable resources including
hydropower, wind, biomass and sun based vitality are likewise used to create power, however
frequently on a littler scale. These assets are promptly accessible in nature and can be renewed
generally quickly.
Coal energy is a nonrenewable energy, which means that this is a type of energy that we cannot re
create in sunglitz and Moore study (as cited in Disadvantages of Using Coal to Produce Electricity).
Coal energy is used for the formation of power to control mechanical or producing plants and even to
control our electronics at home. Many industrial plants or manufacturing plants use coal energy to
generate electricity because coal energy is an affordable source of energy in sunglitz and Moore study
(as cited in Disadvantages of Using Coal to Produce Electricity). Advantages of using coal as energy
are; it is an affordable source of energy, it burns easily then other energy sources. Some disadvantages
of coal are that coal energy produces large amount of carbon dioxide, which leads to

Charlemagne And Einhard s Life Of Charlemagne
Charlemagne, translates into English as Charles the Great, was the King of the Franks, who extended
his domain to as far south as Italy. We gain from the two accounts of Notker and Einhard that
Charlemagne was instrumental in the spread of culture and expressions to all edges of his kingdom.
By nearly being partners with the Papacy, he spread the Christian message to almost all of Europe. As
a consequence of his commitments in different fields, his rule was appropriately called the Carolingian
Renaissance. The two different biographies of Charlemagne, the first version being titled Life of
Charles (originally name Vita Caroli) and is written by Einhard. The second version titled Of

One thing that has to be pointed out is that Einhard actually lived during the same time as
Charlemagne and was a prominent member of the Royal court and was conscious to the personal and
official lives of the King. Already being able to see the value of Einhard s version of the story due to
the great respect and admiration he had for Charlemagne. Einhard begins his version with somewhat
giving his reason of why he is writing the biography. He says that he has taken it upon himself to
narrate the public and private life of Charlemagne also calling him his foster father referring to the
way Charlemagne treated students and courtiers similarly to his own children. Einhard mentions the
end of the Merovingian and the start of the Carolingian dynasties also listing his ancestors because he
wanted to give background of the type of kingdom Charlemagne came into. Along with a list of
Charlemagne s military campaigns, following with other details of his life till his death.
Notker who wrote the alternate version lived from (840 912). Notker was separated from Charlemagne
s time by several generations, and as such he had to acquire his information second or third hand, the
value of Notker s work can be seen as subpar compared to Einhard for that fact alone. Notker wrote
this piece for Charles the Fat, the great grandson of Charlemagne comes across as less academic and
more light hearted. Notker also focused more on the king s personality for example, his generosity,

Are Viruses Alive?
Viruses are not usually considered living things because they lack characteristics of living things.
Viruses are biological particles composed of nucleic acid and a protein coat. Viruses are not alive and
should not be considered a living organism. The reasons include that a virus cannot reproduce; they do
not obtain energy, and technically cannot live without a host. Reproduction is one of the biggest
essentials of life. Also if an organism cant obtain or make energy it also is classified as non living. If a
virus has no host then it has no ability to reproduce or to live. Furthermore a virus should not be
considered a living organism because it lacks these traits. A virus is neither an autotroph nor
heterotroph. An autotroph makes its energy by producing food typically seen in plants. A ... Show

Without reproduction a species would become extinct. There are two types of ways to reproduce.
Sexual reproduction is when two parent organisms come together and combine genetic information to
give birth to an offspring. Examples of sexual reproductions include human beings, animals, and
insects. Asexual reproduction is when an organism can reproduce with only one parent such as starfish
and bacterium. Viruses can multiply but they cannot do so on their own. Viruses because viruses are
not cells, they can replicate only by invading a host cell and using the enzymes and organelles of the
host cell to duplicate. Replication can occur by either the lytic or lysogenic cycle. Viruses are part of
an extraordinary life cycle. If a virus infects a cell for a long period of time they are in a lysogenic
cycle. During a Lytic cycle, the viral genome is released into the host cell and replication of the virus
follows immediately. A virus does not contain the right cell parts to reproduce which causes a virus to
go and infect a cell to

Reverberation Map Analysis
Seyfert galaxies are one of the two largest groups of active galaxies, along with quasars. They have
quasar like nuclei (very luminous, distant and bright sources of electromagnetic radiation) with very
high surface brightnesses whose spectra reveal strong, high ionisation emission lines, but unlike
quasars, their host galaxies are clearly detectable. Seyfert galaxies account for about 10% of all
galaxies and are some of the most intensely studied objects in astronomy, as they are thought to be
powered by the same phenomena that occur in quasars, although they are closer and less luminous
than quasars. These galaxies have supermassive black holes at their centers which are surrounded by
accretion discs of in falling material. The accretion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is confirmed by the fact that the narrow lines do not vary detectably, which implies that the
emitting region is large, contrary to the broad lines which can vary on relatively short timescales.
Reverberation mapping is a technique which uses this variability to try to determine the location and
morphology of the emitting region. This technique measures the structure and kinematics of the broad
line emitting region by observing the changes in the emitted lines as a response to changes in the
continuum. The use of reverberation mapping requires the assumption that the continuum originates in
a single central source. For 35 AGN, reverberation mapping has been used to calculate the mass of the
central black holes and the size of the broad line regions. In the few radio loud Seyfert galaxies that
have been observed, the radio emission is believed to represent synchrotron emission from the jet. The
infrared emission is due to radiation in other bands being reprocessed by dust near the nucleus. The
highest energy photons are believed to be created by inverse Compton scattering by a high
temperature corona near the black

Eating Disorders Are Serious Disorders
Eating disorders are serious disorders that have a negative impact on both the psychological and the
physiological well being of the afflicted (Welch, Ghader, Swenne, 2015). Studies concerning eating
disorders are showing more and more frequency in younger age groups and especially in those who
are athletes, diabetics, and obese adolescents (Martin Golden, 2014). This tells us that symptoms of
eating disorders can be caught and treated during adolescence. Today, many schools have very little
class time dedicated to educating students about healthy lifestyles. Little, to no information is given
about what eating disorders are or how to avoid the development of one. If information is provided
about the prevention of eating disorders, it is usually in the form of a video or discussed briefly in a
textbook. Schools are not doing enough in the fight against the development of eating disorders. Many
studies have shed some light on the issue of eating disorders by conducting surveys and developing
new programs to use in schools. The primary prevention of eating and body image problems among
young people, and in particular, adolescents, is emerging as one of the most desirable achievements in
contemporary health and nutrition (O Dea J. , 2000). Primary prevention programs, and better
education in general, for the prevention of eating disorders and promotion of healthy lifestyles needs
to be established in schools. The purpose of this paper is to propose more education

Pi s Passion For Many Different Religions
At the beginning of the novel, we are introduced to Pi s passion for many different religions. Pi is a
believer, and he prays, as well as, analyzes the depth of religion. Do you feel that throughout the first
few days during Pi s survival on the lifeboat, Pi continues to exhibit and carry through religion based
procedures to calm and assist him in his means of survival?
From the very start it is revealed to us that Piscine Molitor Patel is extremely passionate about
religion. In fact, the entire introduction and first part of the novel revolves around Pi expressing his
love for all types of religion, and describing his beliefs for each and every one of them (Hinduism,
Islam, Christianity). Pi talks about everyone s confusion on which religion he supports, as they
believe, one can support only one religion. What is your son doing going to the temple? Your son was
seen in church crossing himself. Your son has gone Muslim However, when Pi is thrown out onto the
lifeboat by the sailors of his ship going to Canada, I see a huge change in the intensity and amount of
connections Pi makes to religion. On the lifeboat, during the first few days at sea, Pi completely
forgets about all of his prayers. I believe that this is because Pi completely loses his faith when he is
the only one to survive out of his family, and he is on a tiny life boat with a huge Bengal tiger, and a
hyena. I think that Pi s love of religion came from all of the hope stored inside of him. However,

Emotional Analysis Of Csar Chvez Saved My Life By Csar...
The Faith of Words César Chavez once said, Nonviolence is not inaction. It is not discussion. It is not
for the timid or weak. Non violence is hard work. It is the willingness to sacrifice It is the patience to
win. . His words inspired one young man to turn his life around and become a man of character who
used his experiences to help others. In his essay César Chávez Saved My Life Daniel Nene Alejandrez
tells his story of the struggle and anger towards many injustices that happen around him and his
journey from channeling that anger through crime to using it to start a foundation Barrios Unidos, to
help men in prison overcome poverty, and the drug and violence culture surrounding them. In his
essay, Alejandrez uses key scenes from his life to convey his main theme of spiritual connection to
overcome the many hardships the Latino community faces in this country. Alejandrez begins his essay
with a story from his childhood. He sets up the story by giving it a time and place he is the son of a
migrant worker born in a cotton field in Merigold, Mississippi. He then describes his difficult
childhood using vivid language, as the son of a migrant worker he had to move many times a year and

Last 100 Years War
I. Introduction
Question, what was the100 Years War and did it really last 100 years?
II
The 100 Years War was an on and off war between France and England from 1337 to 1453 over who
was the rightful heir to the French throne, among other disputes. Small disputes had been going on for
years but the fight really escalated when King Charles IV of France died without a male heir. He did
have a sister Isabella the mother of Edward III. Therefore, Edward believed that because of this, he
should be king of France. The French however, decided that a cousin of Charles, Philip, should be
crowned king.1
III
There were several battles during the 100 Year War but, some of the most significant battles included:

Critique Of Gaunilo s Ontological Argument
The Ontological argument is something that I agree with, in order to claim it as false there need
evidence to support it. Gaunilo s argument isn t really that valid, you can t compare someone as big as
God to an island. An island isn t a human being, you can t figure out how much knowledge it has it
doesn t have a brain. It could never be claimed as all knowing, all powerful, or an all good island. I
believe he s onto something but he need some more work. I feel that there is nothing on earth that can
compare to God, so it would be hard to prove that the ontological argument is not valid.

Paul Mccartney s Impact On Pop Music
Paul McCartney was born June 18, 1942, in Liverpool, England. His contribution in the Beatles in the
1960s helped pop music ascend from its origins in the entertainment business and morphed it into a
highly respected creative commercial art form. He also remains as one of the most prominent solo
performers of all time in terms of both recordings at his concerts and sales of his attendants.
Sir James Paul McCartney was born on June 18, 1942, in Liverpool, England, to James and Mary
McCartney. His father was a cotton salesman, who would often play the piano with a local jazz band
his mother was a maternity nurse. As a labor man s child he grew up in a traditional working class
family, similar to later bandmates of the Beatles George Harrison and Richard Starkey (Ringo Starr).
An early tragedy happened when Paul was just fourteen years old, his mother died. Her death was
linked to complications after a mastectomy. McCartney s later band member, John Lennon, also
suffered the loss of his mother at an early age a connection that Paul would later point to as the start of
a close bond between the two musicians.
He was inspired by his father to explore different musical instruments, Paul initiated his lifelong love
affair with music as a young kid growing up in Liverpool. Although he took proper music lessons as a
kid, he found it easier to learn by ear, teaching himself the Spanish guitar, piano and trumpet. The
teenaged musician met John Lennon in 1957 at a church festival where

Why the Fries Taste so Good
Rhetorical Analysis
In the excerpt Why the Fries Taste So Good by Eric Schlosser, Schlosser deeply examines the process
of one individual farmer and his process, not to mention takes it as far as going to the International
Fragrance and Flavor facilities to see what truly does make the fries taste so good. He does a good job
of hitting each individual appeal as a writer in order for us as readers to accept the information he s
handing out. Even in Ian Brailsford s review of Schlosser s excerpt, he finds little if any opposition
whatsoever. At one point he even says, By focusing on Ray Kroc s empire McDonald s America s
biggest employer and real estate owner Schlosser is covering well travelled academic terrain

Then he moves onto the second step where he shares the competition factor of the industry and how
improbable it is today to be a successful potato farmer unless you re one of the big time producers and
that typical farmers today are going through such hardships just to stay alive and produce (Schlosser
2.) Then, he examines the third and final tier of the information and that s wrapping it all up into why
the french fries really do taste so good. And he does that by establishing himself as a credible,
firsthand source of information by placing himself in the facilities of the IFF and seeing up close and
personal what the lab professors do to the product to make it the way it is. He even provides a physical
description of how to get to one of the plants and what it looks like almost to reinforce the fact that he
was there and received all of this information up close and personal (Schlosser 3.)
Schlosser really examined the depths of the french fry industry to a T and provided readers with just
about all the information they wanted, if not more. He did it in a variety of ways, by intertwining the
logical ingredient components and financial state of what it takes to be a financial farmer, as well as
the pathetic appeal of introducing readers to a rags to riches story of a poor farm boy making it big by
holding onto a small dream

The Impact Of Television On The Television Industry Essay
Whilst much of television s history has relied on specific industrial practices established early in the
1960s, the turn of the century has introduced significant changes to the medium of television. The
current position of television, defined by Lotz as the post network era, illustrates an evolution from
these early industry practices. For the most part, scholars agree that this transition was caused by
changes in the industrial norms of producing, financing, and distributing television, many of which
can be attributed to the arrival of digital technologies. This essay will argue that these changes
throughout the television industry have created a new, distinctive era of television culture.
First and foremost, Lotz provides valuable insight into the distinguishable eras of television
development. The resulting three eras are defined as the network era, multi channel transition and post
network era (7). The network era , which spanned roughly from the early 1950s to the mid 1980s,
governed industry operations and created a television experience which characterizes much of the
medium s history. This era was characterized by adapting radio network modes of content creation,
distribution, advertising, and audience measurement to the context of the then new televisual medium.
Dominated by a three network oligopoly network system comprised of ABC, NBC and CBS critics
have often condemned the network era as bland due to its strict censorship and limited creative

Divided Attention In A Football Game
Sitting in a stadium watching a football game requires being able to focus attention on the game while
distractions interfere with your focus. Our visual surroundings typically include a multitude of objects
that differ in their location, shapes and constituent features. Specific objects may be selected for
detailed examination and perceptual enhancement by directing attention to their locations or their
identifying features (Schoenfield, Hopf, Merkel, Heinze, Hillyard, 2014). At a football game there is a
lot going on that requires divided attention which is the distribution of attention among two or more
tasks (Goldstein, 2015, p. 100). During the game, some of my attention will be object based focused

The Development Of The Pair Bond
In our culture the relationship most often discussed when describing human interaction and that which
is considered the most ideal or normal relationship (demonstrated by cultural morality and various
forms of media) is that of the male female couple. This pair bonding is a phenomenon that exists to
some degree in the natural world, but occurs most prominently in humans. The development of the
pair bond is one of the single most important aspects of human evolution, culture, and relationships as
we understand them today. This behavior has driven human sociality, reproduction, and cultural
development through evolutionary, physiological, and psychological means. By understanding and
assessing the history and evolution of pair bonding, the means by which our cultural foundations were
established can be discovered. To determine how the pair bond has been established, one must look at
the various evolutionary pressures that lead to this type of behavior. As Herbert (2005) explains, the
reproductive strategies of organisms are often defined by biologists as r or K strategies. The former
tend to be smaller and live in unstable environments with their reproductive strategy being to produce
as many offspring as possible (potentially only once in their lifetime), many of them dying before
reaching the reproductive age of their already short life expectancy. The offspring with the highest
fitness are the ones that survive to this reproductive stage. In contrast, K strategists

Teaching Children With Autism Essay
Plethora of instructional formats can be used by teachers when teaching children with autism. Some of
the instructional formats commonly used with children with ASD include small group instruction, one

can be highly effective when delivering instruction to children with autism. Several forms of
reinforcement can be utilized to increase desired behavior, such as use of computers, edibles, toys,
stickers, and verbal praises depending on what s motivating for the child. Barton, Lawrence, Deurloo

212). In their study, they evaluated DTT in a real situation where they recommended that As educators
and paraeducators seek to use DTT in community based settings, it is critical that they receive the
training and supervision needed to allow them to implement DTT in the manner in which it has proven
effective (p. 218). The study evaluated the training in school setting, but did not generalize skills to
different settings. Further research is needed to determine the efficacy of well trained staff in
delivering DTT to children with ASD. DTT is an evidence based practice, and research has shown that
it can help in teaching language skills and maximizing learning when instruction is delivered with
consistency and by trained staff. Discrete trial training is more effective in one on one instruction
while direct instruction can be delivered in small group format. Direct instruction (DI) intervention
can be used with children with autism to develop their language skills. In comparing discrete trial
instruction to direct instruction, Flores Ganz (2014) studied effectiveness of both DI and DTT in a
summer school program where thirteen students with autism attended for four weeks and received
special education services. They found that the students in the DI group performed slightly better than
their peers in the DTT group with moderate difference in effect on student learning for the DI group
(p.201).

The Importance and History of the Steam Engine Essay
The wonderful progress of the present century is, in a very great degree, due to the invention and
improvement of the steam engine, and to the ingenious application of its power to kinds of work that
formerly taxed the physical energies of the human race. ~Robert H. Thurston
The steam engine can easily be considered the single most important invention of the entire industrial
revolution. There is not one part of industry present in today s society that can be examined without
coming across some type of reference or dependence upon the steam engine. But, who deserves the
credit for this great invention? Some give the credit to James Watt while others claim that Thomas
Newcomen was the original inventor. However, the idea of the ... Show more content on

Thurston.
The idea using the power of steam to our advantage goes back nearly twenty one centuries. A learned
writer in ancient Alexandria, named Hero, wrote a manuscript describing various devices and ideas of
the time. Although it is not proven that Hero was the inventor of any of these devices, he is given
credit for the earliest mention of steam power. Hero describes a method to open the doors of a temple
with the action of a fire on the alter at the front of the temple. A series of pipes runs between the alter
and the temple doors. The force of the steam created by the fire on the alter is strong enough to open
the temple doors. The essential principle that Hero used was to change heat energy into mechanical
energy or work. Supposedly, Hero continued his work and ended up creating what is often called the
First Steam Engine. Hero s engine is featured on below on the right. The cauldron or bowl like portion
AB holds water. There is a steam tight cover place over top of the cauldron. Two pipes extend from
the lid and suspend a globe directly above the cauldron. The water is heated, causing steam to be
created and forced through the pipes. The globe then fills with steam. Pipes K and H are located on
opposite sides of the globe and allow the steam to escape when the pressure becomes uneven. The
escaping steam then causes the globe to spin on its axis.

Character Analysis Of The Novel The Shipping News
Among all the characters of the novel The Shipping News, Quoyle endures the most powerful change
and provides the one of a kind strength that drives the story onward. He is the insecure protagonist of
the tale, whose self esteem is the feature that limits him the most. In the progress of his transition as a
character he not only spares himself, but his troubled family line as well. Quoyle s solitude and agony
in the beginning of the book almost extends throughout the whole story where we see him beat
himself to the ground with the hard put downs and mistreatment from others. A Flemish flake is a
spiral coil of one layer only. It is made on deck, so that it may be walked on if necessary. (Proulx 1)
This first quote of the story gives a brilliant narrative of the boneless person Quoyle is. Quoyle is a
powerful character who is unconfident, quiet, and an unloved person, who has been taught his whole
life that he is nothing short of a failure.
Quoyle is a man of few friends, and precedes a solitary and detached life in Mockingburg, New York.
Quoyle is chracterized by the author as a man who abstracted his life from the time (Proulx 11) He
falls in love, or so he thinks, to an unlikely equal called Petal, whom he ends up having an unfortunate
marriage with. She was with Quoyle out of pleasure and to use him for financial support. She cheated
on him repeatedly, and possessed no love for their two daughters, she sold them before running off
with a boyfriend and getting herself butchered in a car wreck in the process. In the author s vocabulary
of describing their unrighteous relationship, What he had was what he pretended (Proulx 14) Quoyle
is ruined notwithstanding the circumstance that she treated him like dirt and had no respect for him.
His whole world is astray after losing his terrible spouse and the recent deaths of his unloving parents
who anticipated him to arrange their funeral. Before he went, Quoyle s father went as far as to recite to
him how much of a disappointment he was. It is safe to say Quoyle was on his lowest of lows, that is
until his unpronounced Aunt Agnis Hamm reveals herself from out of the blue to take him to their
family s spot of origin, Killick Claw Newfoundland. It makes sense ,

The Death Of The Black Death
Fear. Uncertainty. Survival. These three words became synonymous with life in Western Europe
during the period of the Black Death. This grim period represents a dark era in European history when
a devastating outbreak resulted in a significant amount of instability, decline in population, and
economic, political and cultural upheaval. In the face of this terrifying calamity, human judgement
was put to the test as fear and uncertainty made people react to the plague in extreme ways. Socially,
the lack of understanding of the real cause of the plague and its widespread reach made people adopt
drastic measures to combat it. Religious beliefs and superstitions also played a major role in the way
people reacted to the plague as many believed that the plague was a punishment for their sins. The
outbreak also brought to the surface human weaknesses such as greed and indulgence as people tried
to take advantage of the situation for their personal gain. Even today, society faces turmoil as a result
of disease, as in the case of Ebola, which caused significant amount of mayhem and fear in the
beginning when it could not be contained. The Black Death resulted in an extraordinary amount of
fear and uncertainty in society as hundreds were dying each day from a disease that people could
neither understand nor control. Due to this lack of understanding people began to isolate themselves
and treat the infected with cruelty and indifference. This is evident from the account of Giovan

Fordham Research Paper
The meaning of the Jesuit tenet Magis is essential in the quest for self actualization. It is the duty of all
to become the best version of themselves that they can possibly be, no matter what the area of growth

College is the catalyst for knowledge expansion. Although all undergraduate institutions offer this,

The Sociological Analysis Of Alienation In The Office
The Office is a popular comedy show that originated in the UK and ventured into the U.S. It is popular
among mostly millennials but can be cross generational because of the different cohort groups that are
represented in the show. The run down is that it s a mockumentary about a mediocre paper company
called Dunder Mifflin and the workers that cohabitate within. With Michael Scott being a kind, lenient
yet socially unaware and naive branch manager also having an extremely wide variety of personalities
coexisting in this primary social agent the episodes never fail to entertain. Exemplifying very simple
humor, this show can be argued as mind numbing comedy, however, I believe there are so many

and finally says I m boring myself just talking about this ( The Pilot ). Jim is experiencing alienation
due to the dull, unrewarding work that he performs at his job.
Another strong sociological concept I pondered upon while watching any episode was gender biases.
Sociologists have studied differences between gender and have come to the conclusion that men and
women tend to make up majority of the jobs on the opposite side of the job spectrum. For instance,
men typically obtain jobs that express power, and decision making, such as manager, sales rep, or a
doctor. When women mostly occupy jobs that are emotion driven and require more emotional labor,
such as social workers, nurses, and receptionists. The Office reflects this idea because Pam Beesley is
the receptionist and is the first face you see when walking into the office. Pam has great emotional
labor and she shows it throughout the series by smiling at people even when she has gone through a
divorce as well as when her parents were going through a divorce. In the episode Dream Team Pam
leaves the office to start her own paper company (Yay for Pam transcending gender norms in the work
force!) which leaves Kevin to fill in as receptionist. From the get go Kevin struggles at the job because
he lacks the knowledge and social skills to handle the people who call into the office. This provides

David Bowie s theatricality on stage has been influenced by Brecht s philosophy around performance.
Berthold Brecht was a famous German poet, playwright and theatre director most well known for his
use of alienation techniques with his plays (Buckley, 2013). Alienation, distancing the audience from
immersing themselves the characters opposed to naturalism Brecht wanted to make the audience
critical and aware of what was happening. Brecht mostly used music, songs and gestures to convey
meaning in his plays (Buckley, 2013). By doing this he was able encourage the audience to create their
own perception of what was occurring. Bowie incorporates this technique within his songs and
performances. He feels that it is important for his audience to have their own association of what I am

Le Carnaval Des Animaux-Ciklus Virtuoso
The online concert that I listened to was called Le Carnaval des Animaux Ciklus Virtuoso, which
lasted about twenty seven minutes. Le Carnaval des Animaux composed of a chamber orchestra, it
was a small group playing. If I listened to this on a CD, I would think this was a symphony orchestra.
While watching this concert, I observed many different things. The instruments that I saw were
pianos, cello, violin, clarinet, xylophone, flute, and the viola. The piece s dynamics started out
pianissimo (very softly) and then began to go from soft to louder over time which is called crescendo
and the other instruments started to chime in. The most played instrument in the concert was the
piano. When the pianos were playing, they sometimes took low runs of octaves. The piano played a
cackling tune as the violin started to play louder. The first movement concluded with all the
instruments using a fortissimo (very loud) note. In the middle of the concert, the pianos played a
higher, softer, version of the melody while the violins were playing at the same beat. More towards the
end, the piano was played gentle, while a solo cello played a slow smooth melody. The pitch of the
violin sound went from high pitch to low pitch. My observation throughout listening to this concert
were, it sounded to me like the violins and cellos were attempting to make squeaky noises to imitate a
certain type of animal. The same scale was played over and over again. The flute was played very
softly, while the cello was played louder. Towards the middle of the concert, the melody is played by
the flute. The xylophone was played in rondo form, which was played in more than ... Show more

Environmental Effects Of Air Pollution
Chemical compounds used in cleaning products and industrial production are being used every day.
Some of these chemicals are naturally occurring but others are synthetic and can cause harm to the
environment and human population, by being released into the atmosphere. The ever changing
atmosphere, especially in Pittsburgh, is filled with different compounds. Many of the compounds
found in air are naturally occurring but some of these compounds such as Titanium tetrachloride,
Vinyl Chloride, and Benzene are emitted from factories and some household items and cause health
and environmental effects. Possible solutions to reduce and possibly eliminate exposure are then be
explored.
To provide context on the degree of severity of the air pollution in the city of Pittsburgh now, the past
must be evaluated. Since the days of the coal plants, the city of Pittsburgh has had air pollution. The
air of Pittsburgh in the nineteenth and twentieth century was enveloped with heavy pollution to the
point where visibility was hindered (Davidson, 1979, p.1035). According to Davidson (1979) back in
the day, coal from the Pittsburgh seam [contained] 31 41% volatile compounds (p.1036). This statistic
means that 31 41% of the compounds in the coal seam would readily release into the air with the
extraction of the coal. The class of compounds inside of the coal is called volatile organic compounds,
or VOC s for short (Schweinfurth, 2016). VOC s are compounds that interact with organic

  • 2. Cervical Smoking Research Papers Women are also targeted when it comes to cigarettes. According to some, Many girls and women are more concerned about looking good than about the long term health effects (Sasman 23). Strong evidence points to the connection between smoking and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia; which is the abnormal growth of squamous cells on the cervix. CIN is curable; however, cervical cancer is a consequence from it if left untreated. According to Saules study, Cervical Cancer is now well established as a smoking related illness (207), claiming 5,000 lives annually. In the Journal of College health, the rate of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and cervical cancer is elevated in smokers. Quitting or reducing smoking reduces the likelihood of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Brief leaflets on the connection of smoking and cervical cancer have shown to be effective; however, in efforts to make more and younger women mindful, a study was designed to research the possibilities. According to Saules, increasing this awareness may help with the cessation efforts caused by cervical cancer (208). The 135 female students who participated were in between the ages of 18 and 24 with various smoking status. The procedures were approved by the Eastern Michigan University Human subjects review board with the average age of about 20 years old and completed about 2 years of college, 78% Caucasian and 17% African American. First, participants were asked to rate their risk of developing heart disease, lung disease and cervical cancer. According to this study, participants were asked to indicate which of the following they believed would increase the risk of developing cervical cancer by answering yes or no to each: HPV, oral contraceptive use, changing sexual partners, smoking, alcohol use, not using a condom, low fiber diet, cervical dysplasia, and having an abortion. Participants were also asked to determine whether they considered themselves as a smoker, ex smoker or non smoker. Past month smokers sought themselves likely in the average and above average category for heart disease and lung disease. Also, past month smokers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Reasoning behind the Female Genital Circumcision Topic: FGC Reasoning behind the Female genital circumcision. General Purpose: To inform my audience Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about female genital circumcision and why it is practiced. Thesis: Female Genital Circumcision is a cultural procedure that is performed on young girls for a variety of reasons. Members of this culture chose to continue these traditions because they believe they will gain sociological, health and marriage benefits for their daughters, ensuring these young girls a better future is mandatory. I. Introduction A. Attention Getter: How many of you have ever looked at someone and wondered why they dresses or behaved in a certain way? The reasoning being these choices can differ depending on their background lifestyle. The way we are raised can have a huge impact in the way we behave. Introduce your topic: For those who are not familiar with FGC, it is a cultural practice that has been around for thousands of years. As defined by the World Health Organization female genitalia circumcision comprises all procedures involving partial or total removal of the external genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non medical reasons. B. • 4. Ed Zwick’s Glory Ed Zwick s Glory An Exemplary Model for Historical Films History, I am convinced, is not just something to be left to the historians. Warren Susman [1] From a critic s point of view, what is there not to scrutinize when a white, Jewish filmmaker is responsible for a historical film about African Americans during the Civil War? One which happens to have a brave young Boston Brahmin as the supposed leader of a colored battalion? Surely he does not have the license to create a film based on a heritage with which he has no affinity. Director Ed Zwick was apprehensive with the task and struggled with his entitlement to create such a film. I was afraid initially that a young, white, liberal, Jewish director would be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The critic does point out that Glory is by no means flawless, citing historical discrepancies; nevertheless, a sound approval is given. [3] From a supportive angle, Morgan Freeman, an academy award nominee black actor, fully backs every aspect of the project. Freeman was not only ecstatic about the idea for the film, but he also defended Zwick and screenwriter Kevin Jarre from criticisms about the film s alleged whiteness. In rebuttal to a charge by Roger Ebert that Glory concentrates too much on the white point of view, Freeman claimed: I don t have a problem with that. You cannot reasonably ask a white writer to do it differently. Now, if we re going to start citing some unfortunates, it might be unfortunate that a black writer didn t write it, but if a black writer had written it, there s a good chance he wouldn t have found a producer. So there you are. This is a movie that did get made, and a story did get told, and that s what is important. Reportedly, Freeman was so adamant about the film s script that he approached Zwick in the auditioning stages, pleading, Whatever you want, you ve got me. Moreover, he and co star Denzel Washington (1989, Best Supporting Actor, Glory) took significant pay cuts to make the film a success for the sake of art and history. [4] James W. • 5. Racial Stereotypes Of Deaf And Deaf Cultural stereotypes used to consider deafness to be a great misfortune, but being deaf does not limit the abilities of a person. Members of the Deaf community consider deafness to be normal rather than a disability. A deaf people can do anything a hearing person can do, such as, drive, participate in group activities, communicate, and have normal lives. Deaf In the film Through Deaf Eyes , an HDTV documentary including interviews, personal stories, and historic accounts, the prejudice and affirmation of Deaf culture is revealed to show hearing people the reality of deaf life. Through this film, I have learned about education for deaf people, the Deaf President Now Movement, and about cochlear implants. The Fist thing I learned from watching Through Deaf Eyes is the differences between deaf speaking schools and deaf ASL schools. Deaf speaking schools teach deaf people to communicate using speech through speech therapy. Speaking schools are good because they enables a deaf person to learn speech to talk with a hearing person. The problem with speaking schools is that they are not always effective and ban the use of ASL. Speech therapy creates a one way method of communication between a deaf person and a hearing person. With speech a deaf person is able to speak with a hearing person, but they are still not able to hear the person they are talking to. Unlike speaking schools, ASL schools teach their students to communicate with sign language. ASL is a language that uses ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Horror Of All Vacations I, as a second grade girl, had never smelled anything so foul or seen anything so gross. I could smell something decaying through the crisp summer breeze in Wisconsin. While going through the cabin, I found the most disgusting items and problems around the little cabin.Seeing the horrifying sight of blood splattered against the white bathroom walls. Cockroaches were scurrying around the wooden floors of the kitchen. Glass fragments all over the sticky, cold, wooden kitchen floors. I knew this was going to be the horror of all vacations. I knew that my family had a problem as soon as we stepped out of our red Ford minivan. This place looked like a tornado went right through it. Soon after getting out of the car, I smelled the ... When we first walk in there were no doors, just curtains hanging from the hinges of the doorways for doors. My mom spoke in a sarcastic tone, Great privacy this place has. Walking throughout the rest of the house, I saw the small dingy bathroom with plumbing coming out of the walls with holes everywhere and scum on the water on the shower walls. Looking at the mess in the bathroom, I saw the walls covered in dried blood. My mom rushed everyone out of the bathroom in a disgusted manner said, That is the most disgusting thing I have ever seen, even more than the hospital that I use to work at. No one goes into that bathroom until I wash it. my mom stated. Soon after that issue everyone went to the tiny size living room which was about the size of a nice size store bathroom. Dad muttered under his breath, I wonder what else is wrong with this dump? Sitting down on the uncomfortable furniture that was available for us in the cabin. When sat down on the couch that was so uncomfortable, whenever we moved around, we heard a crumpled noise in the cushions of the couch. My Finger Printing And Palm Prints My Finger Printing and Palm Printing Adventure On November 10th 2015, I went to the Bridgeport Police Department to get my fingerprints, as well as my palm prints done by a lady named Debbie Ayers. Mrs. Ayers works for the Federal Bureau of Investigation actually in the fingerprinting department, so it was nice because she had tons of interesting information about this subject! When it comes to fingerprinting, there are various types of inks and methods used to carry out the process. For instance, there is the chemical method which is where a red porelon pad ink is used. After the fingerprints are taken, the next step in the chemical method would be to put the ten print card into a heating element which would make the ink come out black ... Anyway, after she obtained the FD 249 fingerprint card, she started the process. One by one, she placed my fingertips into the ink and then rolled them from one side of my fingernail to the other. Mrs. Ayers followed the FATT principle to obtain my fingerprints. FATT stands for fingers away, thumbs in and this principle is used because it assists obtaining fingerprints the correct way. In addition, Mrs. Ayers advised me to how critical it was that each fingerprint was put in the correct location on each card because a mistake like this could make an investigator or police officer believe they have the wrong person which could ultimately allow that criminal to walk free. Once she completed my rolled fingerprints, she obtained all of my fingers from each hand and recorded them on the bottom of the card at a forty five degree angle. These are used to make sure the rolled fingertip impressions matched by comparing the two. After she finished obtaining my fingerprints she then proceeded to capture a print of my palm. For some americans, Abraham Lincoln remins the great Emancipator, the man who freed the african american slaves. According to the medieval physiology, the sanguine characters, like cheerfulness, optimism, hopefulness etc are reflection of excess of blood as one of the four body humors. Sanguine describes the personality of an individual with the temperament related to blood, the spring weather (wet and hot), and the element of air. The sanguine individual suddenly gets excited by whatever affects him with immediate reaction, but it is not too deep and the impression doesn t last long. Some chief characteristics of the Sanguine Temperament are, Diplomatic While talking, the sanguines usually use very pleasing words; they speak in a way that avoids offending others. This character makes them much friendly and pleasing to talk with. Still, at times they may hurt the feeling of others through their direct and frank words i.e. something bitter truth . The Sixties Exposed in Takin it to the Streets and The Dharma Bums One cannot undertake any study of the 1960s in America without hearing about the struggles for social change. From civil rights to freedom of speech, civil disobedience and nonviolent protest became a central part of the sixties culture, albeit representative of only a small portion of the population. As Mario Savio, a Free Speech Movement (FSM) leader, wrote in an essay in 1964: The most exciting things going on in America today are movements to change America ( Takin it to the Streets, 115). His essay is critical of those that maintain the status quo and oppose change in America. It seems quite obvious that change has occurred as a result of the efforts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The rebellion against automation and middle class prosperity of the sixties is portrayed in Kerouac s The Dharma Bums. Ray and the other dharma bums lived on little money and enjoyed nature. Ray traveled cross country hitchhiking and jumping on trains from California to North Carolina and back more than once on only a few dollars and while at home in North Carolina for Christmas he sat in the woods with his dog much of the time and preferred to sleep in a sleeping bag outside on the porch rather than inside his mother s home. This love of nature and desire to live a very meager lifestyle in opposition to the working class prosperity seems to be more in opposition to the changing culture, which was becoming more automated and industry driven, than it was trying to illicit change. Regarding automation and middle class prosperity, it seems that Kerouac and others feared the loss of nature to industry as well as one s time to be able to enjoy nature. The fight against automation was however, somewhat subservient to the goal of social change regarding individual rights. The civil rights movement sought changes to the system of racial injustice. Resistance to this movement helped bring about the FSM and the fight for one s rights to free speech and assembly. The FSM was a movement dedicated to promoting equality and individual rights, yet it maintained the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Minority Groups within Empires Introduction 1 What is a minority 2 Empires and Minorities Body Paragraphs: 1 Romans and Minorities 2 The Ottomans and Minorities 3 The United States and Minorities 4 Minorities and Destroying Empires Conclusion: 1 Recommendations regarding dealing with minorities When the word Empire is heard, people tend to think of a hegemonic state with an emperor that oppresses all those who oppose him. Such an impression is not the result of nothingness, but that of shallow knowledge of certain empires that prevailed in the pre modern and early modern world. However, before we get into details about how minorities were dealt with, we have to define our terms. The first term to be defined is minority ; which according to Richard T. Schaefer means a subordinate group whose members have significantly less control or power over their lives than members of a dominant or majority group. There are certain characteristics for minority groups. The first is that they have a distinguishing physical or cultural trait. Such a case is manifested regarding the Hijab in France, or the use of Kurdish language by Lebanese Kurds. The second is being treated unequally, and having less control over one s life, as was the case with Africans in South Africa. The third characteristic is having involuntary membership, with no personal choice being employed in the process. That characteristic is to be observed with African Americans born to slave parents. • 16. Are Viruses Alive Research Paper Luis Lam Biology Honors Mr. Zarate Pd. 7 September 1, 2014 Are Viruses Alive? Viruses are not usually considered living things because they lack characteristics of living things. Viruses are biological particles composed of nucleic acid and a protein coat. Viruses are not alive and should not be considered a living organism. The reasons include that a virus cannot reproduce; they do not obtain energy, and technically cannot live without a host. Reproduction is one of the biggest essentials of life. Also if an organism cant obtain or make energy it also is classified as non living. If a virus has no host then it has no ability to reproduce or to live. Furthermore a virus should not be considered a living organism because it lacks these traits. A virus is neither an autotroph nor heterotroph. An autotroph makes its energy by producing food typically seen in plants. A ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Without reproduction a species would become extinct. There are two types of ways to reproduce. Sexual reproduction is when two parent organisms come together and combine genetic information to give birth to an offspring. Viruses can multiply but they cannot do so on their own. Viruses because viruses are not cells, they can replicate only by invading a host cell and using the enzymes and organelles of the host cell to duplicate. Replication can occur by either the lytic or lysogenic cycle. Viruses are part of an extraordinary life cycle. If a virus infects a cell for a long period of time they are in a lysogenic cycle. During a Lytic cycle, the viral genome is released into the host cell and replication of the virus follows immediately. They have quasar like nuclei (very luminous, distant and bright sources of electromagnetic radiation) with very high surface brightnesses whose spectra reveal strong, high ionisation emission lines, but unlike quasars, their host galaxies are clearly detectable. Seyfert galaxies account for about 10% of all galaxies and are some of the most intensely studied objects in astronomy, as they are thought to be powered by the same phenomena that occur in quasars, although they are closer and less luminous than quasars. These galaxies have supermassive black holes at their centers which are surrounded by accretion discs of in falling material. The accretion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is confirmed by the fact that the narrow lines do not vary detectably, which implies that the emitting region is large, contrary to the broad lines which can vary on relatively short timescales. Reverberation mapping is a technique which uses this variability to try to determine the location and morphology of the emitting region. This technique measures the structure and kinematics of the broad line emitting region by observing the changes in the emitted lines as a response to changes in the continuum. The use of reverberation mapping requires the assumption that the continuum originates in a single central source. For 35 AGN, reverberation mapping has been used to calculate the mass of the central black holes and the size of the broad line regions. In the few radio loud Seyfert galaxies that have been observed, the radio emission is believed to represent synchrotron emission from the jet. Eating Disorders Are Serious Disorders Eating disorders are serious disorders that have a negative impact on both the psychological and the physiological well being of the afflicted (Welch, Ghader, Swenne, 2015). Studies concerning eating disorders are showing more and more frequency in younger age groups and especially in those who are athletes, diabetics, and obese adolescents (Martin Golden, 2014). This tells us that symptoms of eating disorders can be caught and treated during adolescence. Today, many schools have very little class time dedicated to educating students about healthy lifestyles. Little, to no information is given about what eating disorders are or how to avoid the development of one. If information is provided about the prevention of eating disorders, it is usually in the form of a video or discussed briefly in a textbook. Schools are not doing enough in the fight against the development of eating disorders. Many studies have shed some light on the issue of eating disorders by conducting surveys and developing new programs to use in schools. The primary prevention of eating and body image problems among young people, and in particular, adolescents, is emerging as one of the most desirable achievements in contemporary health and nutrition (O Dea J. , 2000). Primary prevention programs, and better education in general, for the prevention of eating disorders and promotion of healthy lifestyles needs to be established in schools. • 25. The Impact Of Television On The Television Industry Essay Whilst much of television s history has relied on specific industrial practices established early in the 1960s, the turn of the century has introduced significant changes to the medium of television. The current position of television, defined by Lotz as the post network era, illustrates an evolution from these early industry practices. For the most part, scholars agree that this transition was caused by changes in the industrial norms of producing, financing, and distributing television, many of which can be attributed to the arrival of digital technologies. This essay will argue that these changes throughout the television industry have created a new, distinctive era of television culture. First and foremost, Lotz provides valuable insight into the distinguishable eras of television development. The resulting three eras are defined as the network era, multi channel transition and post network era (7). The network era , which spanned roughly from the early 1950s to the mid 1980s, governed industry operations and created a television experience which characterizes much of the medium s history. This era was characterized by adapting radio network modes of content creation, distribution, advertising, and audience measurement to the context of the then new televisual medium. Dominated by a three network oligopoly network system comprised of ABC, NBC and CBS critics have often condemned the network era as bland due to its strict censorship and limited creative ... The Development Of The Pair Bond In our culture the relationship most often discussed when describing human interaction and that which is considered the most ideal or normal relationship (demonstrated by cultural morality and various forms of media) is that of the male female couple. This pair bonding is a phenomenon that exists to some degree in the natural world, but occurs most prominently in humans. The development of the pair bond is one of the single most important aspects of human evolution, culture, and relationships as we understand them today. This behavior has driven human sociality, reproduction, and cultural development through evolutionary, physiological, and psychological means. By understanding and assessing the history and evolution of pair bonding, the means by which our cultural foundations were established can be discovered. To determine how the pair bond has been established, one must look at the various evolutionary pressures that lead to this type of behavior. A learned writer in ancient Alexandria, named Hero, wrote a manuscript describing various devices and ideas of the time. Although it is not proven that Hero was the inventor of any of these devices, he is given credit for the earliest mention of steam power. Hero describes a method to open the doors of a temple with the action of a fire on the alter at the front of the temple. A series of pipes runs between the alter and the temple doors. The force of the steam created by the fire on the alter is strong enough to open the temple doors. The essential principle that Hero used was to change heat energy into mechanical energy or work. He is the insecure protagonist of the tale, whose self esteem is the feature that limits him the most. In the progress of his transition as a character he not only spares himself, but his troubled family line as well. Quoyle s solitude and agony in the beginning of the book almost extends throughout the whole story where we see him beat himself to the ground with the hard put downs and mistreatment from others. A Flemish flake is a spiral coil of one layer only. It is made on deck, so that it may be walked on if necessary. (Proulx 1) This first quote of the story gives a brilliant narrative of the boneless person Quoyle is. Quoyle is a powerful character who is unconfident, quiet, and an unloved person, who has been taught his whole life that he is nothing short of a failure. Quoyle is a man of few friends, and precedes a solitary and detached life in Mockingburg, New York. Quoyle is chracterized by the author as a man who abstracted his life from the time (Proulx 11) He falls in love, or so he thinks, to an unlikely equal called Petal, whom he ends up having an unfortunate marriage with. She was with Quoyle out of pleasure and to use him for financial support. She cheated on him repeatedly, and possessed no love for their two daughters, she sold them before running off with a boyfriend and getting herself butchered in a car wreck in the process. In the author s vocabulary of describing their unrighteous relationship, What he had was what he pretended (Proulx 14) Quoyle is ruined notwithstanding the circumstance that she treated him like dirt and had no respect for him. His whole world is astray after losing his terrible spouse and the recent deaths of his unloving parents who anticipated him to arrange their funeral. Before he went, Quoyle s father went as far as to recite to him how much of a disappointment he was. • 31. The Death Of The Black Death Fear. Uncertainty. Survival. These three words became synonymous with life in Western Europe during the period of the Black Death. This grim period represents a dark era in European history when a devastating outbreak resulted in a significant amount of instability, decline in population, and economic, political and cultural upheaval. In the face of this terrifying calamity, human judgement was put to the test as fear and uncertainty made people react to the plague in extreme ways. Socially, the lack of understanding of the real cause of the plague and its widespread reach made people adopt drastic measures to combat it. Religious beliefs and superstitions also played a major role in the way people reacted to the plague as many believed that the plague was a punishment for their sins. The outbreak also brought to the surface human weaknesses such as greed and indulgence as people tried to take advantage of the situation for their personal gain. Even today, society faces turmoil as a result of disease, as in the case of Ebola, which caused significant amount of mayhem and fear in the beginning when it could not be contained. The Black Death resulted in an extraordinary amount of fear and uncertainty in society as hundreds were dying each day from a disease that people could neither understand nor control. Due to this lack of understanding people began to isolate themselves and treat the infected with cruelty and indifference. This is evident from the account of Giovan ... • 33. The Sociological Analysis Of Alienation In The Office The Office is a popular comedy show that originated in the UK and ventured into the U.S. It is popular among mostly millennials but can be cross generational because of the different cohort groups that are represented in the show. The run down is that it s a mockumentary about a mediocre paper company called Dunder Mifflin and the workers that cohabitate within. With Michael Scott being a kind, lenient yet socially unaware and naive branch manager also having an extremely wide variety of personalities coexisting in this primary social agent the episodes never fail to entertain. Exemplifying very simple humor, this show can be argued as mind numbing comedy, however, I believe there are so many sociological layers that are only evident ... He takes a pause to scoff and finally says I m boring myself just talking about this ( The Pilot ). Jim is experiencing alienation due to the dull, unrewarding work that he performs at his job. Another strong sociological concept I pondered upon while watching any episode was gender biases. Sociologists have studied differences between gender and have come to the conclusion that men and women tend to make up majority of the jobs on the opposite side of the job spectrum. For instance, men typically obtain jobs that express power, and decision making, such as manager, sales rep, or a doctor. When women mostly occupy jobs that are emotion driven and require more emotional labor, such as social workers, nurses, and receptionists. The Office reflects this idea because Pam Beesley is the receptionist and is the first face you see when walking into the office. Pam has great emotional labor and she shows it throughout the series by smiling at people even when she has gone through a divorce as well as when her parents were going through a divorce. In the episode Dream Team Pam leaves the office to start her own paper company (Yay for Pam transcending gender norms in the work force!) which leaves Kevin to fill in as receptionist. From the get go Kevin struggles at the job because he lacks the knowledge and social skills to handle the people who call into the office. This provides further ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. David Bowie s S Birthday At 68 Comment been confined to music. It has been observed that he has had a profound influence on fashion. Denardo comments that everyone from Gautier to Gaga paid homage and acknowledges as being inspirational to them. Denardo, in the Fashion Spot, marking the occasion of David Bowie s birthday at 68 comment that for over four decades, Bowie, the cultural chameleon has been crafting his immortality from a medley of fantastical Avant guard guises (2015). He kick started, she observed, Glam Rock and pushed the world of fashion into another orbit (2015). She reflected on his transformations from Ziggy Stardust to a hedonistic astronaut Major Tom to the cocaine using White Duke. David Bowie s theatricality on stage has been influenced by Brecht s philosophy around performance. Berthold Brecht was a famous German poet, playwright and theatre director most well known for his use of alienation techniques with his plays (Buckley, 2013). Alienation, distancing the audience from immersing themselves the characters opposed to naturalism Brecht wanted to make the audience critical and aware of what was happening. Brecht mostly used music, songs and gestures to convey meaning in his plays (Buckley, 2013). By doing this he was able encourage the audience to create their own perception of what was occurring. Bowie incorporates this technique within his songs and performances. He feels that it is important for his audience to have their own association of what I am writing about (Hale, 2015) ... • 35. Le Carnaval Des Animaux-Ciklus Virtuoso The online concert that I listened to was called Le Carnaval des Animaux Ciklus Virtuoso, which lasted about twenty seven minutes. Le Carnaval des Animaux composed of a chamber orchestra, it was a small group playing. If I listened to this on a CD, I would think this was a symphony orchestra. While watching this concert, I observed many different things. The instruments that I saw were pianos, cello, violin, clarinet, xylophone, flute, and the viola. The piece s dynamics started out pianissimo (very softly) and then began to go from soft to louder over time which is called crescendo and the other instruments started to chime in. The most played instrument in the concert was the piano. When the pianos were playing, they sometimes took low runs of octaves. The piano played a cackling tune as the violin started to play louder. The first movement concluded with all the instruments using a fortissimo (very loud) note. In the middle of the concert, the pianos played a higher, softer, version of the melody while the violins were playing at the same beat. More towards the end, the piano was played gentle, while a solo cello played a slow smooth melody. The pitch of the violin sound went from high pitch to low pitch. My observation throughout listening to this concert were, it sounded to me like the violins and cellos were attempting to make squeaky noises to imitate a certain type of animal. The same scale was played over and over again. The flute was played very softly, while the cello was played louder. Towards the middle of the concert, the melody is played by the flute. The xylophone was played in rondo form, which was played in more than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 36. Environmental Effects Of Air Pollution Chemical compounds used in cleaning products and industrial production are being used every day. Some of these chemicals are naturally occurring but others are synthetic and can cause harm to the environment and human population, by being released into the atmosphere. The ever changing atmosphere, especially in Pittsburgh, is filled with different compounds. Many of the compounds found in air are naturally occurring but some of these compounds such as Titanium tetrachloride, Vinyl Chloride, and Benzene are emitted from factories and some household items and cause health and environmental effects. Possible solutions to reduce and possibly eliminate exposure are then be explored. To provide context on the degree of severity of the air pollution in the city of Pittsburgh now, the past must be evaluated. Since the days of the coal plants, the city of Pittsburgh has had air pollution. The air of Pittsburgh in the nineteenth and twentieth century was enveloped with heavy pollution to the point where visibility was hindered (Davidson, 1979, p.1035). According to Davidson (1979) back in the day, coal from the Pittsburgh seam [contained] 31 41% volatile compounds (p.1036). This statistic means that 31 41% of the compounds in the coal seam would readily release into the air with the extraction of the coal. The class of compounds inside of the coal is called volatile organic compounds, or VOC s for short (Schweinfurth, 2016). VOC s are compounds that interact with organic ...
