The Art Nouveau Caused By King Leopold II Of Belgium
In Belgium, the Art Nouveau provided works of Victor Horta. The beauty of these artist works
often overshadows the historic context that funded, supplied, inspired this art and design
movement. The transformation art and design in Brussels during this time was a product of
imperialism and genocide sanctioned by King Leopold II of Belgium, through the exploitation and
appropriation Congolese culture and raw materials.
Born in Brussels, Belgium in 1835, Leopold II became the second king of Belgium at the age of
30 [Fig1]. Belgium was a young country with an equally small economy and population. Striving to
compete the economic success of Britain and Germany, Leopold II would turn his attention towards
Africa, with the purpose of establishing Belgium as a world power, during a time of imperial
growth, which coincided, with the expiation of Art Nouveau in Europe. To acquire the land, raw
materials, and population of twenty million; Leopold II effectively established control of the
Congo through economic and political means. Leopold II was one of the first European rulers to
attempt to develop this area and would successfully obtain it in 1885, creating the Congo Free State
(Frost 2001). Leopold II did many things in order to acquire this colony. For example, he exploited
tensions other colonies controlled by Britain and Germany, by hosting the Brussels Conference of
1876, which lead to the creation of the International African Association; established arbitrate

Obsessive-Cognitive-Compulsive Disorder Essay
Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a sometimes disabling problem that catches people in
endless cycles of redundant thoughts and behaviors. People with OCD have haunting thoughts or
fears that continue repeating over and over in their mind that they can t control. The anxiety
created by these thoughts lead to an urgent need to perform certain things or routines. People
usually repeat these rituals in an attempt to stop the obsessive thoughts and make them go away.
The thoughts or fears may go away momentarily but before long the thoughts will come back. In
some cases, an obsession can get so bad as to take up hours of a persons life a day. An obsession
can build until it will start to interfere with a persons normal activities. Most people with obsessive
compulsive disorder recognize that their disorder is odd and excessive,... Show more content on

Getting rid of OCD requires some kind of treatment. The most common type of treatment includes a
mix between medicine and cognitive behavior therapy.
Cognitive behavior therapy. The goal of cognitive therapy is to teach a person to deal with their
fears and reduce anxiety without practicing their routine behaviors. Many times this is just like
exposure therapy. The person will be required to think through a situation in a comfy environment
and solve it without the use of the ritual.
Medication therapy. Tricyclic antidepressants, such as Anafranil, and selective serotonin reuptake
inhibitor antidepressants, such as Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft may be valuable in treating OCD.
Electroconvulsive therapy (ETC). In severe cases of OCD and in people who do not respond to
medical and behavioral therapy, electroconvulsive therapy (ETC) or psychosurgery may be used to
cure OCD. During ECT, electrodes are attached to the patient s head, and a series of electric shocks
are supplied to the brain, which induces seizures. The seizures cause the release of
neurotransmitters in the

In the previous article, it was evident that awareness of one s illness was linked to the better
function outcomes and lower self esteem and hope. The explanation that was given for such
findings was based on the concept that acceptance would impact on the outcomes in different ways
depending on the meaning that one attaches to the acceptance. In this case, variability will be
evident depending on the extent that one accepts stigmatizing ideologies and beliefs concerning
mental illnesses. Unique from people with other psychiatric and mental conditions, schizophrenia
individuals will more often than not willfully contest or are unaware of what others think of them
to be mentally ill. Taken fully, the phenomena was described as a lack of awareness but showed a
contradiction with some part of the results. From the results, it was concluded that acceptance of
schizophrenia is highly dependent on the meaning that the patient attaches to schizophrenia. In the
article, it was believed that if one believes that the illness is an implication that they cannot achieve
some socially valued roles, and this could lead to hopelessness and demotivation of perseverance.
Nonetheless, if the patient does not share in the opinion thatillness can preclude the possibilities of
satisfying life, then the patient s awareness of the condition will make them seek

Elizabeth Hartley-Brewer s Essay Pitching Your Praise
In the article Pitching Your Praise , the author Elizabeth Hartley Brewer asserts that it is
important for continues growth in kids, that they are allowed to be self sufficient and taught to
become independent learners, to learn how to self assess themselves and to choose their own
goals in life. This is accomplished by grooming kids to not always have the need to feel
validated through someone s approval through empty praise, but by having them feel
encouraged through praise that is focused on their actual efforts and the success of their efforts.
The goal of safe praise is to build on your child s growing capacity for self belief and self
motivation so she can begin to rely less on you and judge her efforts herself. (Hartley Brewer 3)

Environmental Scarcity And Food Insecurity
A.
According to the FAO estimation, there are 840 million undernourished people in the world, and
95% of them are from developing countries.
B.
Environmental scarcity and food insecurity are critical factors that intensify the issue of
malnutrition among people in most developing countries.
C.
d. Evidence health issue:
protein energy malnutrition (PEM) refers to a form of malnutrition where there is lack of calories
and protein intake. There are two kinds of PEM: the nutritional edema and starvation. They affect
children the most because children have less protein intake than adults. PEM is a fairly common
issue across the world and accounts for 45% of children s death in the global level, which can be
attributed to insufficient food intake.
Second hair illness is also a common deadly form of malnutrition of which kwashiorkor and
marasmus are extreme manifestation.
Marshall Island becomes a dietary colony of US. US provides cheap and unhealthy food to locals
from Marshall Island, which results in their malnutrition with high rate of obesity and high
possibility of getting cardiovascular disease.
Factors:
Globalization [looks like] improving the economies of poor countries (Guest), yet it accelerates in
inequity and weakens nations ability to achieve food security in local communities. More
specifically, The International Monetary Fund and World Bank provide financial support for the

Long Day s Journey into Life There are many catastrophic diseases in people s everyday lives and
although addiction isn t necessarily considered a disease, it is still life controlling and traumatic.
Addiction isn t necessarily viewed as severe but it can be, it can also lead to a person s death.
People all over the world either have some sort of addictionor they know someone who does.
Addiction isn t limited to drugs, alcohol or shopping, it can be anything. People who suffer from
addiction tend to lose themselves both mentally and physically, they tend to become more

All the family members resent each other for their misfortunes and deal with their sadness by
escaping in their addictions (drugs, alcoholism). The scene portrays patterns of denial, blame,
anger and bitterness that are typical in families affected by addiction. Family members take it not
just to feel better but to escape pain, which then affects parts of the brain related to coping,
emotional regulation and judgment. So this makes the family dysfunctional in relation to each
other, and they escape into the drug even more to cope. It s a vicious cycle. According to Kathleen
Carroll, PhD, a psychiatry professor at the Yale University School of Medicine, echoed Shurtleff s

Dna Testing And Law Enforcement Officers Essay
DNA forensics is a division of forensic science that focuses on the use of genetic material in
criminal investigation to answer questions pertaining to legal situations, including criminal and
civil cases. Through DNA testing, law enforcement officers are able to identify human remains or
the individual responsible for a crime. DNAtesting is a highly advanced scientific process that
involves replicating the human DNA sequence to create a genetic map of an individual. Because
of its reliability, DNA testing has become a significant factor in criminal cases. However, it has
also been identified as having the potential to violate privacy and constitutional rights. The DNA
identification process consists of five stages. These five stages include isolation, quantification,
polymerase chain reaction, short tandem polymerase chain reaction, and interpretation. Isolation
refers to the extraction of DNA from the nucleus of tissue cells. After extraction, scientists
quantify the DNA sample by ensuring that it is at least one billionth of a gram in size. If the
sample is smaller the isolation process must be repeated. Next, through polymerase chain reaction,
the single strand of DNA is split down the middle into two pieces and replicated to create a larger
sample. Next, through short tandem polymerase chain reaction, smaller sections of the DNA
sequence are replicated. This allows scientists to interpret the DNA and create a genetic profile of
the individual from whom the original DNA

The Revitalization Of Asean Role As An Honest Broker
The Revitalization of ASEAN Role as An Honest Broker in the South China Sea Disputes
I.Introduction
ASEAN has played a key role in managing the disputes over the South China Sea (SCS) as part
of its commitment to promote peace and stability in the region. The disputes were related to
territorial claims over Spratly and Paracel islands and maritime boundaries involving four
ASEAN members, namely Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam as well as
the People s Republic of China (and Taiwan). The potential escalation of conflict to open war in
the region, due to military build up by China and external intervention by the United States, puts
ASEAN into a central position to play its role as an honest broker or mediator. The stalemate of
discussion over the SCS disputes since the 2012 ASEAN Summit should be an indication for
ASEAN to revitalize its role and to start taking serious steps in a diplomatic manner to provide
peaceful solution for the conflicts.
Maintaining stability and security has always been ASEAN s fundamental interest, as any escalated
conflicts or war may cause a distraction to the integrity and solidarity of its members and influence
political and economic cooperation in the region. The discussions over the SCS disputes have been
established between ASEAN and China since the 1990s. As a result, ASEAN signed the ASEAN
Declaration on the South China Sea in 1992 and the ASEAN China agreement in 1995, which
regulated an obligation to inform

Treatment Of Intravenous Drug Use
Abstract
Intravenous drug use is a dangerous, yet increasing activity around the world. Persons who inject
themselves with illicit drugs are at risk for several complications such as infection caused by
contaminated needles. These infections can be serious and often lead to hospitalization as well as
other health related complications. A situation that often arises is determining the best type of
treatment for IV drug users who are being discharged from the hospital. Physicians and pharmacists
are commonly faced with choosing outpatient IV antibiotic therapy versus oral antibiotics when
treating infections caused by IV drug use. This presents an ethical dilemma, particularly concerning
the ethical principles of beneficence and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unfortunately, the trend in intravenous drug use has increased in recent years. Results from the
2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health show that of individuals aged 12 or older in
America, current users of cocaine and heroin were approximately 1.5 million and 289,000
respectively (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2014). As the number
of intravenous drug users continues to rise, so does the risk of dangerous and potentially fatal
complications that are associated with illicit drug use. In this population, death rates are higher due
to overdose, AIDs related mortality, and other blood borne viruses (Mathers et al., 2013). Mortality
rates remain high even though precautions have been taken to reduce them. According to Lavender
McCarron (2013), Mortality in injecting drug users is up to 22 times higher than for the age
adjusted population, despite increased provision of needle and syringe programs, reduced needle
and syringe sharing, and higher uptake of hepatitis B vaccination (p. 511).
In addition to higher rates of mortality, intravenous drug users are at increased risk of infection.
Mertz, et al. (2008) stated, Malnutrition, immunodeficiency, homelessness, and needle sharing
contribute to a high infection rate in these patients (p. 2). Common infections range from simple
cutaneous abscesses and cellulitis to more serious infections such as

promptly. Proper arresting of the wind energy can absolutely aid to meet the energy needs. The
quality and dependability of power have become an important factor for the enlargement of new
technologies with the imminent derestricted environment. The beginning of power electronic
devices have steered a new era of power quality while integrating them with the renewable sources
of energy. Distributed generation (DG) systems are projected to play a vital role to meet the energy
demand with non polluted environment. Distributed generation technologies such as wind turbine,
photovoltaic systems, fuel cell and diesel engines are used in various places. Of all these diesel
engines have fast response time and controllability, they are relatively common for combination

Sports-Related Head Injury Essay
Most sports related head injuries, such as concussions which is temporarily interference with the

concussion during their visit, if there is any activity they could perform or not, and how long it will

symptoms. Head injuries take time to heal. Children need time to rest until their symptoms are
gone, which usually take several days to several weeks. Children should rest from both physical
cognitive activities gradually as their symptoms allow. Children who return to school after a
concussion may require some classroom adjustments, including a lighter course load or a

Ice Cream Lab
Did the solid Ice Cream Formation Change Based on Type of Salt Use?
Purpose
The purpose of the lab was to identify how the different types of salt applied to ice effect the
amount of solid ice cream formed.
Background Research
Ice cream is a solution with a lower freezing point than H2O therefor regular ice cannot lower the
temperature enough for solid product to form (Science Matters). Lowering the temperature farther
is the job of salt. NaCl (salt) will dissolve in water (or ice in this case) to form a solution with a
lower freezing point. The Fahrenheit system is based off salt solutions with 0В° F being the point
where a salt solution freezes. By adding salt to the ice surrounding the Ice Cream solution the ice
begins the process of melting (Elementary Science Program). When the solid ice transforms into
liquid with the addition of salt the process requires heat (Elementary Science ... Show more content

Salt was mined out of large salt flats that were the remains of ancient sea s that had dried up.
Nowadays salt is produced both by mining old lakes and drying up newer lakes. Harvesters will
flood a shallow area with salt water and wait for the water to evaporate. When the designated
area is dry workers just scrape up the remaining salt. Salt is used to lower the temperature and
unless it is created in a lab, which is not a cost effective was to obtain salt, the mining and
harvesting causes verities of salt. Sea salt is obtained simply by harvesting dry sea s; this can be
done by both mining and farming. Sea salt varies widely and contains many other trace mineral
and elements (Health Nut). Kosher salt is small, purer flakes of salt compacted if mined or grown
via the evaporation process (Health Nut). The differences in Kosher Salts and Sea Salts are
explored in their ability to create solid product from an Ice Cream solution.

Julius Caesar and Other Shakespearian Tragedies
Shakespearian tragedies usually have a well defined tragic hero. According to Aristotle, a Greek
philosopher, a tragic hero is a character of high rank and nobility, exhibits a tragic flaw, and
recognizes how his actions led to his eventual downfall. William Shakespeare s The Tragedy of
Julius Caesar incited a century old argument over who really deserves the title of The Tragic Hero.
Many argue that Caesar is the tragic hero. However, I believe that Brutus should hold the title of
tragic hero because he is a noble and respected man, he holds tragic flaw of poor judgment. But
most importantly, what separates him from Caesar, is that he recognizes how these flaws and his
decision to murder his leader resulted in his own demise.
To accomplish their plan, the conspirators needed a noble man of high stature to justify their
actions. The best man for the job was Brutus. Brutus was Caesar s best friend, loved by the
people, and he loved the people back. Therefore, it only made sense for the conspirators to recruit
Brutus guarantees the support of the Roman people. Cassius admits this too, Brutus shall lead,
and we will grace his heels / With the most boldest and best hearts of Rome (3.1.135 136).

the way, then the people will assume that maybe Caesar s death was not that terrible since this

Essay on The Principle of Separate Corporate Personality
The Principle of Separate Corporate Personality
The principle of separate corporate personality has been firmly established in the common law
since the decision in the case of Salomon v Salomon Co Ltd[1], whereby a corporation has a
separate legal personality, rights and obligations totally distinct from those of its shareholders.
Legislation and courts nevertheless sometimes pierce the corporate veil so as to hold the
shareholders personally liable for the liabilities of the corporation. Courts may also lift the
corporate veil , in the conflict of laws in order to determine who actually controls the corporation,
and thus to ascertain the corporation s true contacts, and closest and most real ... Show more content

The veil of incorporation can be described as being the separation between a company and its
members. Due to the separate legal status of a company from its members this is usually very
strictly maintained. However, there are certain circumstances when the courts will deny the
people who run the company the advantage of hiding behind the corporate veil. In these instances
the veil of incorporation is said to be pierced or lifted , i.e. the barrier between a company and its
members is removed so there is no legal separation between them. There instances are however,
difficult to predict as the reasons depend on the judges interpretation of fairness or policy or of how
a particular statute should be interpreted.
In the leading case of Salomon v Salomon Co Ltd, Salomon incorporated his boot and shoe repair
business, transferring it to a company. He took all the shares of the company except six, which
were held by his wife, daughter and four sons. Part of the payment for the transfer of the business
was made in the form of debentures (a secured loan) issued by the company to Salomon. Salomon
transferred the debentures to Broderip in exchange for a loan. Salomon defaulted on payment of
interest on the loan and Broderip sought to enforce the security against the company. Unsecured
creditors tried to put

The Furry Newcomer Essays
It was a warm March afternoon. I lay curled up on the couch completely engrossed in the works
of Oscar Wilde. Suddenly a red rubber ball landed on my lap. I looked up to see the nine year old
mischief maker grinning at me. The sun rays played on his dark haired body. The streaks of
yellow seemed as though someone had sprinkled gold all over him. He wetted his nose and stared
at me intensely. His piercing dark coffee colored eyes could make anyone feel uncomfortable.
Marshal, the brilliant German Shepherd was trying to hypnotize me.
Marshal came in to our family when he was a mere two month old puppy. Since then, he has been
my companion and best friend. Growing up he was the most mischievous dog one could ever

So, I commenced on my ingenious plan to persuade mom.
It did not take me long to coax he, though she only agreed to have a look at the puppies. In my
heart I knew that half the battle was won! That same evening we headed to the pet store. It was
lined with countless aquariums housing a variety of fish. My eyes searched for the dogs but I
could see none. The store manager informed us that they kept them in the other room. They had
only one Labrador puppy available then. I waited patiently while they fetched the puppy.
However, my patience soon ran out and I started wandering around the store. The fish seem to
follow my every move; it was as if they could sense my eagerness.
In a few minutes a man emerged from the other room with the most adorable little wonder of
nature nestled in his hands. The little guy shook his cream colored body and looked up at us with
his bead like eyes. In the instant that our eyes met, I could see the joy and exhilaration in them. As
soon as the man set him down, the puppy ran towards us stumbling on the sleek floor. He started
jumping around with joy while I patted him. The way he bounced around made him seem more
like a little bunny than a puppy. The little pup had succeeded in winning over mom s heart. I was
jumping with joy when I heard her discussing the paperwork with the manager.
Unfortunately, the earliest we could take him home was the next morning. The pup was sad

The Controversy Of Brutus In Julius Caesar
In the play Julius Caesar, the author Shakespeare depicts a persistent controversy between Caesar
and his conspirators that turned against Caesar. Brutus remained a great friendship with Caesar
for a very long time until he became a disguised rival that was joined by many other conspirators
which involved Cassius. Through many struggles and schemes, they achieved their goal to bring
Caesar down and assassinated him when the chance was given. E Tu Brute? were the last words of
Caesar that left a mark even in today s history because Brutus turning against Caesar depicts that not
everyone can be fully trusted for what they portray to be. But, this play highlights also the
importance of real friends such as Antony that tried to bring the best... Show more content on

He uses the technique of ethos for the citizens to be convinced that what Brutus had done was
for the good of the citizens. In the speech, Brutus quotes Believe me for mine honor, and have
respect to mine honor that you may believe(III.II. 15 16) , he uses his credibility to provide
evidence to the crowd. He plays a significant role in the Senate, which he is honored. Using this
advantage, he persuades people to believe him that what he does is for their own good and that
he would not lie as he is known to be an honored man. Using ethos, people fell into the trap of
believing Brutus and his reasoning very quickly. However, Antony uses ethos to get the audience s
support and it was a very dangerous moment for Antony as he had to indirectly attack Brutus.
Antony uses ethos by supporting Brutus so that the citizens will believe Antony and his credibility
will be able to bring the audience to understand that what Brutus had done was just part of the
conspiracy. In the quote Which all the while ran blood, great Caesar fell. O, what a fall was there,
my countrymen!(III.II. 201 202) , Antony uses the name of Julius Caesar as a way to bring together
the people of Rome. He uses the authority of Caesar to raise his values and commemorate him and
his great leadership he owned. The word fall used in this quote has two meaning; the first being that
he fell as he was assassinated and the second meaning used in this quote by Antony is the falling of
Caesar into the scheme of conspiracy and through this, Antony strikes an enraged emotion from the

center, the Priest River Experimental Forest (PREF) was set up to provide valuable information for
both management organizations and forestry administrations. All of these resources would improve
forestry management and sustainability research in the western region. The Priest River
Experimental Forest (PREF) was established in 1911. It lies between the Priest River and the
Selkirk Mountains in the State of Idaho. The Priest River Experimental Forest (PREF) contains
two Research Natural Areas: Canyon Creek (977acres), which was established in 1937; and
Wellner Cliff (310acres), which was established in 2006. Headquarters area is located in the West
of the forest, including an office or lab building, three residential buildings, a bunkhouse with mess
hall, and a modest shop. Before 1930, the forest was served as the headquarters for the Priest River
Forest Experiment Station. After that, it was combined into the Northern Rocky Mountain Forest

Executive Summary The FBI Information Technology Upgrade Project (FITUP) was initiated in
2000, and, after five years of cascading problems, was abandoned for the Sentinel project in
2005. Estimated to cost $170M, VCF went over budget by approximately $330M (Nelson 2007).
The project was meant to modernize the FBI s antiquated computer system and included a case
management system, an evidence management system, and a records management system
(Marchewka 2010). As we will discuss in the course of our case study, the Trilogy Project would
fail for a number of reasons. Despite failing, Project Trilogy is not alone when it comes to project

Without centralized IT leadership defining program goals, alignment within the agency s IT
programs was not possible. Culturally, existing tools, such as the Automated Case Support (ACS)
system, were under utilized, and agents did not trust them to protect evidence and confidential
sources (OIG Audit Report 05 07, 2005). Numerous techniques exist that would have allowed
Trilogy leadership to gain key input from system users, which would have had the dual benefit of
creating understanding of the ground level needs of users and fostering user buy in at the project s
outset.
Formal Project Definition
Trilogy management attempted to provide a formal project definition that explained the mission of
the project, focused the project planning efforts and outlined the project deliverables. Trilogy was
so named due to its three components: the Information Presentation Component (IPC), the
Transportation Network Component (TNC) and User Application Component (UAC). The IPC
and TNC components were adequately defined, but the UAC was poorly defined, with
catastrophic results. Trilogy management recognized that the size and complexity of the project
required the use of external resources with proper IT project experience and technical expertise.
Two contractors were used, one for the IPC and TNC, and a second for UAC. The IPC/TNC
contract included three major milestones as part of a phased rollout: Fast Track, Extended Fast
Track and Full Site Capability.

The truth of the matter is, the United States should cease the use of capital punishment in both
federal and state prisons. Capital punishment is immoral and unethical; it degrades society, and
lowers the value of a human life. It does not deter murder, it is not economically efficient, and its
effects are irreversible. There is not one good reason to keep executing wrongdoers in the United
States or anywhere else.
Capital punishment goes against the morals and standards that our country is based upon. A
punishment that inflicts harm on a person can hardly be good or moral if it is purposeless. A
punishment may be given to a wrongdoer for one or a combination of the following reasons: (1) to
protect the community from the criminal returning to previous activity, (2) to rehabilitate the
offender; and (3) to restore the moral order breached by the violation. Capital punishment is not
required to accomplish any of these purposes. Other alternatives work better or at least as well
(Robinson, 1999, October 7). Killing is not the answer (Bender amp; Leone, 1987 p. 63). Recently
some states have been implementing life without parole as an alternative to death. This has proven
just a successful as the death penalty for punishment. It prevents criminals from returning to society,
and is less expensive than capital punishment (Vila amp; Morris, 1997, p.255). Another study shows
that over 80% of those serving life sentences will never commit another crime, and well

Enhanced oxidative stress and changes in antioxidant capacity, found in both clinical and
experimental diabetes, are thought to be the main cause of chronic diabetic complications, in
particular at a microvascular level (Moussa 2008). Excessively high levels of free radicals cause
damage to vital cellular components such as proteins, membrane lipids, and nucleic acids, and
finally lead to cell death (Maritim, Sanders Watkins 2003). The formation of advanced glycation
end products (AGEs), is another factor to be considered in diabetes type 2 microvascular
nephropathy (Motawi et al., 2013). Interaction of AGEs with their cellular receptors (RAGE)
has an important role in the pathogenesis of diabetic complications via enhanced expression of
adhesion molecules, including vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM 1), and intercellular
adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM 1), both markers of vascular injury (Motawi et al., 2013). Motawi et
al. (2013) advanced the hypothesis that tight glycemic control may restore plasma levels of
sRAGE, VCAM 1 and oxidative stress parameters near the normal level in type 2 diabetic
patients, reported as a decoy receptor for AGEs. Motawi et al. (2003) demonstrated that poor
glycemic control decreases plasma sRAGE and increases VCAM 1 levels while good glycemic
control improves these abnormalities which provides benefit to diabetic patients. Many other

Miami and New York City are cities located at complete opposite sides of the United States. Miami,
the city where sunshine, palm trees, and beautiful beaches are the norm, is located in the southern
part of Florida. Meanwhile, New York City, famously referred to as the city that never sleeps, is

Winter is viewed as part of a fable, and Christmas time consist of lying on the beach, soaking in

significant differences in temperature. During the summer, New York City s weather mirrors that
of Miami s warm climate. However, the weather during the winter is a whole another story. The
days and nights consist of freezing temperatures, which at times, can even fall into the negatives.

Examples Of Fallacy
Pseudo reasoning A fallacy is a misleading or unsound argument based on a false or invalid
reasoning and is used as a premise to support a conclusion. Fallacies can be persuasive and be
made both accidentally and deliberately to delude others from the truth. Fallacies can be difficult
to avoid if one does not have the mind of a critical thinker. When utilizing the mechanisms of
critical thinking one is able to see through the misrepresentations of fallacies and to draw a valid,
logical conclusion. This essay aims to discuss how and why formal fallacies and substantive
fallacies are used. Since a great variety of formal and substantial fallacies exist, this essay will limit

Affirming the consequent can be derived in the form of if P then Q where P is the antecedent
and the consequent of the conditional is Q. To illustrate this, a quote from Donald Trump,

victims might have survived (Q). C) Therefore France should allow their citizens to carry guns

The Love Triangle In Emily Bronte s Wuthering Heights
Everyone likes a good love story, myself included. It is no surprise, that a multitude of authors write
love stories. Books with other plots, often, have love stories hidden in them. Love stories are often
dramatic, romantic, and intriguing. These characteristics are displayed in Wuthering Heights by
way of a love triangle. To better understand the love triangle portrayed in Emily BrontГ« s
Wuthering Heights, one should analyze BrontГ« s life and early works, the childhood of Catherine,
Heathcliff, and Hindley, and the personalities Catherine and Heathcliff.
In essence, Emily BrontГ« was born at her father s parsonage in Thornton, near, Bradford, in
Yorkshire, on July 30,1818, the fifth of six children born to Patrick BrontГ« and Maria Branwell
in seven years (Benvenuto 2). Emily BrontГ«, like her sister, inherited Celtic blood, together
with a stern and stoical tradition of daily life (Winnifrith 119). She was a wayward, imaginative
girl, physically delicate, brought up in loneliness and poverty, amid a harsh yet noble landscape
of hill, moor and stream (Winnifrith 119). ... The BrontГ« household was mainly kept in touch
with the current literature, the criticism, poetry, and fiction of their day (Winnifrith 119).
Furthermore, All of the BrontГ«s learned to write in the same minute hand, by which they
could cover a small page with hundreds of words and keep their writing secret later a
consideration of greater importance to Emily (Benvenuto 6). The BrontГ« children wrote
together and had their own roles in the works of literature they composed. Emily and her sister,
Anne decided to write their own story with a fantasy world after their Brother Branwell allowed
them to give him ideas for his own story but did not include them in writing it (Benvenuto 6).
The sisters story was ...a saga centered on an imaginary island in the north Pacific, called Gondal
(Benvenuto 6). Gondal appears in the earliest piece of writing from Bronte that we have, a diary
entry dated November 24, 1834, when she was sixteen years old (Benvenuto 6). Accordingly, We
have seen that Emily BrontГ« spent the greater part of her adult life absorbed in her story about
Gondal and its people (Benvenuto 25). The notebook which she called

Huck Finn Criticism
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, is a satire written by Mark Twain. The novel is based on
the series of adventures that the protagonist, Huckleberry Finn, and his companion a runaway
slave named Jim go on. In the novel, the protagonist, Huck Finn s mind is pulled in conflicting
directions by two compelling desires. The first time when Huck Finn is pulled in conflicting
desires is when he finds Miss Watson s runaway slave, Jim, at Jackson s Island. Huck knows that
if he doesn t turn the runaway slave in to his owner, People would call [him] a low down

The Gift of Leadership
Introduction
We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man s gift is prophesying, let him
use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching let him teach; if it is
encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously;
if it is leadership, let him govern diligently...
Romans 12; 6 8
Leadership is an influence relationship between leaders and followers who intend real changes and
outcomes that reflect their shared purposes.
The explanation would be, influence is involved in leadership. Leadership is reciprocal, in many
organization the superiors influences their subordinates but in some organization subordinates
influences their superiors. Leadership involves creating change and the changes are towards the
outcome which the leaders and followers both want. An important aspect would be influencing
others to follow a common vision. Leadership is a people activity. Since leadership involves
people, there are followers. Every individual who has a great skill and is expertise in their field is a
leader for example musician, scientist, etc. In the leadership process follower is very essential.
Those who are a good leader knows how to follow, it s when they set an example for others.

In A Streetcar Named Desire, Blanche evades light as she says off the bat And turn that over
light off! Turn that off! I won t be looked at in this merciless glare. For Blanche, light embodies
not only the truth of her age, but also the reality of her tragic life she attempts to escape through
her delusions. She covers a naked lightbulb with a Chinese paper lantern just as how she wraps
truth with lies. Music also is a prevalent symbolism throughout the play. The most significant
piece that is used in the play is the Varsouviana polka, which plays whenever Blanche is
confronted with her tragic past. The music carries undertones of foreboding disasters that
eventually befall her. FInally, the streetcar Blanche rode on is a symbolism in itself. Blanche says
in the first scene, They told me to take a streetcar named Desire, and then transfer to one called
Cemeteries and ride six blocks and get off at Elysian Fields! This symbolism foreshadows what
becomes of her life when she lives with Stella and Stanley. Her final destination here can be
considered the afterlife, and cemetery the mental institution she was admitted

RNA World Hypothesis Essay
RNA world hypothesis is a hypothesis to explain the origins of cells. According to the theory, a
form of RNA, or ribonucleic acid, developed that was capable of self replicating. It is said to be
the earliest life forms, from which all other organisms come. While modern organisms are built up
from proteins, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), and RNA, this organism is said to have consisted
only of DNA. The reason scientists believe RNA was the first biomolecular structure is because
it stores information in a similar role to DNA, but at the same time acts as a catalyst in some
reactions, like protein. Catalysts accelerate the rate of reactions necessary to metabolize, or
balance a cell. Essentially, RNA fulfills some roles of DNA and protein, thus... Show more content

For one thing, prebiotic Earth did not have favorable conditions for the formation of nucleotides by
any means. One such problem is that nucleotides require a phosphate group to link, which is
implausible to have occurred naturally without life
The hazardous conditions of prebiotic Earth would also be constantly damaging and denaturing
chemicals forming into RNA and traces of RNA, making it implausible for the RNA to cluster
and begin replicating, as well as survive. Ribose likely would not be very sustainable within the
early world, with the likely possibility of hydrolysis as one of many factors.
Since its conception in the 60 s, RNA world hypothesis has seen numerous discoveries and
possibilities. As recently as 2011, there were RNA components found in meteorites such as
guanine and adenine. This implies RNA may have come from space. Glycolaldehyde has been
found in a distant star system, which is necessary to form RNA, and further backs the idea of
extraterrestrial origins of life. Scientists have also tried to support the hypothesis with claims that
RNA was the source of life as we know it, but other nucleic acids were the predecessor to RNA.
One such suspect is peptide nucleic acid (PNA). Conclusive research behind such claims has yet to

Australian Tax Reform
Debt, Death Taxes
16th October 2002 Robert Camilleri
The Conservative government doctrine is essentially defined as the party of tax relief. But now
conservatives have converted themselves into the party of debt retirement. The conservative
government has lost interest in tax cutting and instead wants to devote the surplus tax payments and
asset sales over the next 3 years to paying down the national debt. The Howard Costello
government, seen as militant debt hawks, has announced their goal is to retire the entire national
debt by 2005.
Has this government forgotten all of the economic and political lessons of the past 20 years? Take
the American experience of the Reagan Government, they used surpluses to cut marginal tax rates,

Parliament will spend the money, because it is in their nature. The debt hawks say, stash the
surplus money away so it s available for a rainy day. The truth is, for parliament; every day is a
rainy day. The Howard government real concern is that if they are sitting on this cash the public
will be screaming out for tax cuts, so repaying debt is a quick an easy way to take the focus off this
get rid of the cash.
Tax reform is the smarter strategy rather than reducing the debt burden and it will grow the GDP
faster. A dollar devoted to reducing marginal tax rates or to reducing the tax penalty against saving
and investment will yield a higher return to the Australian economy, and thus to future generations,
than a dollar used for retiring debt
But even if we suspend our disbelief and assume that every surplus penny was used to buy down
debt, the economic benefit would be trivial. The primary argument in favour of debt reduction is
that it will relieve the burden from our children of having to pay off the debt in the future. But as
long as we don t add to the debt over the next decade through a return to deficit spending, the debt
burden on the next generation will fall automatically. It already is happening. Even without a
penny of actual debt retirement, the debt as a share of GDP will fall from 15% of GDP in the early
1990s, using the current debt levels, to about 8% of GDP now. In

Examples Of The Mistakes Of Entrepreneurs
Three Big Scaling Mistakes that Entrepreneurs Make
Every entrepreneur starts their business with a dream. Usually, that dream involves getting bigger,
better, and making more money. It s a good dream.
The problem is that growing your business can be tricky. If you don t do it properly, you can hurt,
or even destroy, your business. All too often beginning entrepreneurs scale prematurely, hire the
wrong people, and don t create the right systems and processes. You wantto grow your business to
match your dream, but if you make these three mistakes (or any one of them) you may see your
dream vanish before your eyes.
Killer Mistake #1 Scaling Too Quickly

Hire thoughtfully and train thoroughly. Then, and this is the hard part, you need to step back and
let them do it. Micromanaging your employees is counterproductive and a waste of your time and
resources. It also leads to unhappy employees and turnover.
Marketing Just because you understand your business better than anyone doesn t mean that you
know how to market it properly. All too often entrepreneurs try to do too much themselves.
Marketing specialists understand your local market, your competition, and if they re any good,
they ll get to know your business almost as well as you know it yourself. Rather than wasting
money trying to do it yourself, invest in a pro and watch your business grow.
Accounting and Taxes Just like marketing, many entrepreneurs think they have the smarts to
handle their own accounting and taxes. Even if you have a great mind for numbers, as a business
owner, you don t have the time to research all the applicable tax laws that can affect your
business. Hire a CPA and develop a tax strategy from the beginning to help maximize your profits

Infertility, Insulin Resistance, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome...
Polycystic ovary syndrome is an endocrine disorder that affects at least 10% of women living in
the United States. Insulin Resistance plays a large part in fertility for women who have polycystic
ovary syndrome. Myo Inositol improves fertility, and alleviates many of the symptoms associated
with polycystic ovary syndrome and insulin resistance.
Polycystic ovary syndrome is a condition that affects many different parts of the body, not just the
ovaries. The list of ailments associated with polycystic ovary syndrome is long, ranging from skin
tags, dark skin patches, and hirsutism (male patterned hair growth) to liver disease, obesity, and
insulin resistance. The symptoms that contribute to infertility are irregular menstrual cycles, an ...

Radiologic abnormalities on an ultrasound would show polycystic ovaries. Polycystic ovaries are
the formation of clusters of pearl sized cysts containing immature eggs in the ovaries. In healthy
women, a follicle grows and at the time of ovulation, an egg is released into the Fallopian tube. In
women with polycystic ovary syndrome, the development of the follicle is arrested and the egg
does not burst forth. Therefore, the egg dies and the follicle becomes a cyst that remains in the
ovary (Banning 635 636).
A clinical feature of polycystic ovary syndrome is anovulation. Anovulation is the absence of
ovulation. Ovulation is the process in which the ovary releases an egg into the Fallopian tube. If an
egg is not present to meet the sperm in the Fallopian tube, then conception cannot take place. If a
woman is not ovulating then she is not able to conceive. Therefore, anovulation is the most
common cause of infertility (Raffone, Rizzo and Benedetto 275). Anovulation is a symptom of
insulin resistance.
Insulin resistance is when the body s cells do not respond to insulin. When this happens the level
of glucose in the blood increases. Insulin resistance may also cause more insulin to be produced
as the body tries to move glucose into cells (Sedwick 1). High insulin levels may cause the
appetite to increase and lead to imbalances in other hormones. Insulin resistance is considered an
early form of diabetes.
Insulin Resistance affects both men and

The Language Of English As A Language
English as a language has been designated as having a global ranking (Crystal 1997), (Northrup
2013), (Mckenzie 2010). A language that is deemed as having a global status is clarified by
Crystal (2003, p.3) as one that achieves a genuinely global status when it develops a special role
that is recognised in every country . Due to this prestigious standing that English has attained, it is
unsurprising that many are keen to acquire it across the world. This is also supported by Wyse,
Andrews and Hoffman (2010, P.398) who state English is much more favoured over the other
official languages as a second language. As many learners are acquiring English in the context of a
second or foreign language, the discussion over utilising the learner s first language in the process
remains a contentious subject (Brown, 2000). This assignment will provide an overview of
perceptions from differing approaches in regards to the use of the L1 in language education, along
with arguments in support and against the same.
Background of L1 in language teaching.
The precise role that can be played by the learner s first language (L1) in the process of acquiring a
second language has not been explicitly agreed upon. However, the issue of whether to utilise the
L1 in the classroom has remained at the forefront in the English language teaching arena. Mattioli
(2004, P.21) highlights that most teachers tend to have opinions about native language use, this can
depend largely on their training and in

Compare And Contrast Plato And The Matrix
Plato and The Matrix Compare and Contrast
In comparing the movie The Matrix to Plato s The Allegory of the Cave, both have a theme of
trying to find the truth. In the Matrix, Neo is confronted with a difficult choice. Either he can
choose the blue pill and forget that Morpheus ever confronted him with such news of the Matrix or
he can take the red pill and find out the truth, which is that he has been living in a simulated fantasy
world. The Allegory of the Cave is similar in that Plato attempts to explain reality. There are some
epistemology questions that occur in both situations such as, what is truth, how do we find it,
and how reliable are our perceptions? The people that are prisoners in the cave cannot see the
world beyond the cave except for glimmers of light reflecting off the wall and therefore believe
that the cave is the real world when in fact if they could escape to the outer world they would
realize that outside the cave, in the light, is actually the real world. Another example of
comparison is Plato s two world belief, a world of being and a world of becoming.
The contrasts between the Matrix and the excerpt from Plato are that in the Matrix, the
perceived reality that Neo is experiencing is a better description of what the reality outside the
Matrix actually is. Outside the Matrix, Neo discovers a very dark, chaotic, and weird place.
Whereas, the cave depicted in Plato s story is a scary and dark place and his place of ultimate
reality is in the light

How Does Ethanol Affect The Rate Of Respiration In Yeast
The effect of ethanol on yeast respiration
Purpose: To use the phenolphthalein indicator to indicate the respiratory activity of yeast cells
Hypothesis: The greater the concentration of ethanol, the slower the rate of respiration will be.
Conclusion
We conducted this experiment in order to observe the rate of respiration in yeast cells. When yeast
cells metabolize glucose, they produce carbon dioxide and that can change the color of water. This
connects to the purpose of this lab because respiration produces CO2 which is acidic and lowers
the solution s pH. Rate of respiration cannot be measured directly; however, it produces CO2
which is acidic and will lower the pH of a solution, meaning that if the solution s pH drops
sufficiently, the color (huge indicator) would change. In this scenario, phenolphthalein, which
changes color from pink to colorless at pH 8.2, was used. The time taken for decolorization
corresponds to rate of CO2 production which is inversely proportionate to rate of respiration
(shorter time = greater rate).
Prior to this lab, we were aware of the fact that most of the time, the ... Show more content on

Even though a water bath is still better at maintaining temperature than other methods (eg: heating
the glassware over flame, etc), they can also have fluctuating temperatures which in this case, would
be very significant since temperature has a huge effect on the rate of respiration. There is no
knowing whether there were temperature changes from the time we put the samples into the water
bath and the time we took them out, meaning that the rate of respiration may have been affected in
other ways instead of just the amount of ethanol present in the sample. In order to prevent this
limitation, we could consistently monitor the temperature by adding a thermometer in the water so
that we can be aware of any changes if they

The Theory Of Science And Technology
Alan Gonzalez
5/6A
College Algebra
Science and technology is important to society and is often used in our everyday lives. We often
have no idea how science and technology really affect us. We work and live in a world driven by
technology and science. Science is crucial because it has helped form the world that we live in
today. Charles Robert Darwin was an English geologist and naturalist, best known for his significant
addition to the science of evolution. He had a theory that all species have inherited traits over time
from common ancestors, and in a partnership with Alfred Russel Wallace introduced his scientific
theory that this pattern of evolution resulted from an action that he called natural selection, in which

The purpose of the trip was to take a five year survey trip around the world Commanded by
Captain Robert FitzRoy. The voyage would prove the opportunity of a lifetime for the Charles
Robert Darwin.
The HMS Beagle set out on its voyage far and wide with Darwin on board on December 27, 1813.
Over the course of the excursion, Darwin recovered an assortment of characteristic examples,
including fossils, birds, and plants. Through extreme research, he had an exceptional opportunity to
watch the standards of topography, zoology, and natural science nearly. South America, The
Galapagos Archipelago, and The Pacific Island were of sure enthusiasm to Darwin. Charles Darwin
started to review his discoveries in the Diary of Examines, distributed as a component of Chief
FitzRoy s bigger report and later altered into the Zoology of the Voyage of the Beagle, once
Darwin came back to Britain in 1836. The voyage enormously affected Darwin s perspective of
common history. He started to grow a significant hypothesis about the start of living creatures that
was inverse to the famous perspective of different naturalists at once.
Darwin s involvement with examples across the world brought up vital issues. Different
researchers trusted that all species either appeared toward the beginning of the world, or were made
after some time in natural history. In either case, the species were accepted to stay much the same
all through time.

Life Changing Events
LIFE CHANGING EVENTS In this essay you had the option to choose a life event that has
changed you. But I chose to give a list of events that has made me who I am instead of just one
event that changed a little part about me. This essay will show what has happened in my life for
me to be the way I am to this day. This is me. First of all there was my grade seven camp.
Although I have an unclear recollection of the camp I still remember the important bits. One
thing which I know for sure is that I never really wanted to go on the camp. The school teachers
and my parents had to force me to go. Two days before the camp started I decided to go. The big
reason why I didn t want to go was because I was very shy and didn t like... Show more content on

Improvement Opportunity: The Define Phase The purpose of this project was to gain experience in
quality improvement by working with an organization to identify a business problem, analyze the
causes, develop an improvement plan, implement changes, and to verify the effectiveness of the
solutions. For this project we had to keep scope in mind. This project had to follow certain criteria,
such as: that it is a manageable project with a local organization, it can be completed within the
time frame of the course, it has a direct impact on external customers, it is relatively simple, and
that it is not something that is currently undergoing major changes.
The company that our group has partnered with for this project is CVS Pharmacies. We looked into
this company to see if there were any areas for improvement within the organization that would
have an impact on external customers. Within this define stage is when we did exactly that, we
defined the problem. One problem that we found within the CVS Pharmacy, that would be easy
enough to handle given the scope of the project, concerned the stores current inventory (overstock,
backstock) system. It seemed that currently there was no formalized process with regard to placing
items in overstock, resulting in an unorganized and unconventional overstock area. This created a
problem because it made it harder

Dubliners By James Joyce Research Paper
James Joyce wrote Dubliners to show the paralysis of the people of Ireland and how the nature of
routine plays a huge part in their lives. The people of Dublin are confined and used to routines that
they are unable to escape Ireland. No matter how hard they try to leave they wind up right back to
where they originally were. The major themes in Dublinersthat was articulated in Joyce s stories
was the repetitiveness of routines, and the sense of escape. The Dead was the last story in
Dubliners that brought together all of his ideas. Joyce created Gabriel in many ways like himself
and it is believed that The Dead is based of of Joyce s life. Gabriel is a man who is educated but is
very awkward in social situations. However Gabriel doesn t... Show more content on

In An Encounter the narrator and his friends play a game where they are in the wild west in
America which is a sense of freedom for them. This shows that they want to escape from Ireland,
but they can t escape the circling nature so they have to only pretend and play games. Even when
the narrator wants to set out on a new adventure with Mahony and Leo by skipping school, they are
not successful. Mahony and the narrator walk around by the ships and the river and the old man
keeps walking in circles around them which would represent the circling nature of Dublin. Even the
old man tried as a kid to escape but he just couldn t. The kids did not picture Dublin to be
dangerous and cold. This compares to The Dead because Gabriel is the only character in the
entire book to come out and state that he is sick of my own country, sick of it he wants to travel
Europe , and Miss. Ivors wants him to stay and learn more about the country he is from. Just like
Farrington uses drinking as a sense of escape of the dull nature of his job, Gabriel uses his cycling
trips as a sense of escape. Gabriel s wife is also an escape because she is an outsider and she always
talks about how she wants to travel back West. Even during the dinner party Gabriel reaches

time in that area was the Puritans and they were very strict, gloomy, and superstitious. The
educational opportunities that the colonies were given in this place were pretty clear and straight

The effect literacy has on mathematics, social studies, and science.
Literacy strategies that can be used to teach mathematics, social studies, and science.
The effect literacy has on mathematics, social studies, and science. Literacy has a monumental
effect on social studies, mathematics, and science because literacy is critical to the teaching and
understanding of these concepts (Shanahan and Shanahan, 2014). The use of literacy strategies in
mathematics, science, and social studies enhances the students learning and understanding of the

(Shanahan and Shanahan, 2014).
Social Studies In social studies, literacy skills can be used to build vocabulary, locate information,
and to figure out the main ideas of the text (Armbruster and Gudbrandsen, 1986). Literacy is able

The beauty of these artist works often overshadows the historic context that funded, supplied, inspired this art and design movement. The transformation art and design in Brussels during this time was a product of imperialism and genocide sanctioned by King Leopold II of Belgium, through the exploitation and appropriation Congolese culture and raw materials. Born in Brussels, Belgium in 1835, Leopold II became the second king of Belgium at the age of 30 [Fig1]. Belgium was a young country with an equally small economy and population. Striving to compete the economic success of Britain and Germany, Leopold II would turn his attention towards Africa, with the purpose of establishing Belgium as a world power, during a time of imperial growth, which coincided, with the expiation of Art Nouveau in Europe. To acquire the land, raw materials, and population of twenty million; Leopold II effectively established control of the Congo through economic and political means. People with OCD have haunting thoughts or fears that continue repeating over and over in their mind that they can t control. The anxiety created by these thoughts lead to an urgent need to perform certain things or routines. People usually repeat these rituals in an attempt to stop the obsessive thoughts and make them go away. The thoughts or fears may go away momentarily but before long the thoughts will come back. Electroconvulsive therapy (ETC). In severe cases of OCD and in people who do not respond to medical and behavioral therapy, electroconvulsive therapy (ETC) or psychosurgery may be used to cure OCD. In the previous article, it was evident that awareness of one s illness was linked to the better function outcomes and lower self esteem and hope. The explanation that was given for such findings was based on the concept that acceptance would impact on the outcomes in different ways depending on the meaning that one attaches to the acceptance. In this case, variability will be evident depending on the extent that one accepts stigmatizing ideologies and beliefs concerning mental illnesses. Unique from people with other psychiatric and mental conditions, schizophrenia individuals will more often than not willfully contest or are unaware of what others think of them to be mentally ill. Taken fully, the phenomena was described as a lack of awareness but showed a contradiction with some part of the results. From the results, it was concluded that acceptance of schizophrenia is highly dependent on the meaning that the patient attaches to schizophrenia. In the article, it was believed that if one believes that the illness is an implication that they cannot achieve some socially valued roles, and this could lead to hopelessness and demotivation of perseverance. Nonetheless, if the patient does not share in the opinion thatillness can preclude the possibilities of satisfying life, then the patient s awareness of the condition will make them seek ... Elizabeth Hartley-Brewer s Essay Pitching Your Praise In the article Pitching Your Praise , the author Elizabeth Hartley Brewer asserts that it is important for continues growth in kids, that they are allowed to be self sufficient and taught to become independent learners, to learn how to self assess themselves and to choose their own goals in life. This is accomplished by grooming kids to not always have the need to feel validated through someone s approval through empty praise, but by having them feel encouraged through praise that is focused on their actual efforts and the success of their efforts. The goal of safe praise is to build on your child s growing capacity for self belief and self motivation so she can begin to rely less on you and judge her efforts herself. (Hartley Brewer 3) ... All the family members resent each other for their misfortunes and deal with their sadness by escaping in their addictions (drugs, alcoholism). The scene portrays patterns of denial, blame, anger and bitterness that are typical in families affected by addiction. Family members take it not just to feel better but to escape pain, which then affects parts of the brain related to coping, emotional regulation and judgment. So this makes the family dysfunctional in relation to each other, and they escape into the drug even more to cope. It s a vicious cycle. According to Kathleen Carroll, PhD, a psychiatry professor at the Yale University School of Medicine, echoed Shurtleff s comments. • 11. Dna Testing And Law Enforcement Officers Essay DNA forensics is a division of forensic science that focuses on the use of genetic material in criminal investigation to answer questions pertaining to legal situations, including criminal and civil cases. Through DNA testing, law enforcement officers are able to identify human remains or the individual responsible for a crime. DNAtesting is a highly advanced scientific process that involves replicating the human DNA sequence to create a genetic map of an individual. Because of its reliability, DNA testing has become a significant factor in criminal cases. However, it has also been identified as having the potential to violate privacy and constitutional rights. The DNA identification process consists of five stages. These five stages include isolation, quantification, polymerase chain reaction, short tandem polymerase chain reaction, and interpretation. Isolation refers to the extraction of DNA from the nucleus of tissue cells. After extraction, scientists quantify the DNA sample by ensuring that it is at least one billionth of a gram in size. If the sample is smaller the isolation process must be repeated. Next, through polymerase chain reaction, the single strand of DNA is split down the middle into two pieces and replicated to create a larger sample. Next, through short tandem polymerase chain reaction, smaller sections of the DNA sequence are replicated. This allows scientists to interpret the DNA and create a genetic profile of the individual from whom the original DNA ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The Revitalization Of Asean Role As An Honest Broker The Revitalization of ASEAN Role as An Honest Broker in the South China Sea Disputes I.Introduction ASEAN has played a key role in managing the disputes over the South China Sea (SCS) as part of its commitment to promote peace and stability in the region. The disputes were related to territorial claims over Spratly and Paracel islands and maritime boundaries involving four ASEAN members, namely Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam as well as the People s Republic of China (and Taiwan). The potential escalation of conflict to open war in the region, due to military build up by China and external intervention by the United States, puts ASEAN into a central position to play its role as an honest broker or mediator. The stalemate of discussion over the SCS disputes since the 2012 ASEAN Summit should be an indication for ASEAN to revitalize its role and to start taking serious steps in a diplomatic manner to provide peaceful solution for the conflicts. Maintaining stability and security has always been ASEAN s fundamental interest, as any escalated conflicts or war may cause a distraction to the integrity and solidarity of its members and influence political and economic cooperation in the region. The discussions over the SCS disputes have been established between ASEAN and China since the 1990s. As a result, ASEAN signed the ASEAN Declaration on the South China Sea in 1992 and the ASEAN China agreement in 1995, which regulated an obligation to inform ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As the number of intravenous drug users continues to rise, so does the risk of dangerous and potentially fatal complications that are associated with illicit drug use. In this population, death rates are higher due to overdose, AIDs related mortality, and other blood borne viruses (Mathers et al., 2013). Mortality rates remain high even though precautions have been taken to reduce them. According to Lavender McCarron (2013), Mortality in injecting drug users is up to 22 times higher than for the age adjusted population, despite increased provision of needle and syringe programs, reduced needle and syringe sharing, and higher uptake of hepatitis B vaccination (p. 511). In addition to higher rates of mortality, intravenous drug users are at increased risk of infection. Mertz, et al. The quality and dependability of power have become an important factor for the enlargement of new technologies with the imminent derestricted environment. The beginning of power electronic devices have steered a new era of power quality while integrating them with the renewable sources of energy. Distributed generation (DG) systems are projected to play a vital role to meet the energy demand with non polluted environment. Distributed generation technologies such as wind turbine, photovoltaic systems, fuel cell and diesel engines are used in various places. Of all these diesel engines have fast response time and controllability, they are relatively common for combination with WECS (wind energy conversion systems). Purpose The purpose of the lab was to identify how the different types of salt applied to ice effect the amount of solid ice cream formed. Background Research Ice cream is a solution with a lower freezing point than H2O therefor regular ice cannot lower the temperature enough for solid product to form (Science Matters). Lowering the temperature farther is the job of salt. NaCl (salt) will dissolve in water (or ice in this case) to form a solution with a lower freezing point. The Fahrenheit system is based off salt solutions with 0В° F being the point where a salt solution freezes. By adding salt to the ice surrounding the Ice Cream solution the ice begins the process of melting (Elementary Science Program). William Shakespeare s The Tragedy of Julius Caesar incited a century old argument over who really deserves the title of The Tragic Hero. Many argue that Caesar is the tragic hero. However, I believe that Brutus should hold the title of tragic hero because he is a noble and respected man, he holds tragic flaw of poor judgment. But most importantly, what separates him from Caesar, is that he recognizes how these flaws and his decision to murder his leader resulted in his own demise. To accomplish their plan, the conspirators needed a noble man of high stature to justify their actions. The best man for the job was Brutus. Legislation and courts nevertheless sometimes pierce the corporate veil so as to hold the shareholders personally liable for the liabilities of the corporation. Due to the separate legal status of a company from its members this is usually very strictly maintained. In these instances the veil of incorporation is said to be pierced or lifted , i.e. the barrier between a company and its members is removed so there is no legal separation between them. There instances are however, difficult to predict as the reasons depend on the judges interpretation of fairness or policy or of how a particular statute should be interpreted. In the leading case of Salomon v Salomon Co Ltd, Salomon incorporated his boot and shoe repair business, transferring it to a company. Capital punishment is immoral and unethical; it degrades society, and lowers the value of a human life. It does not deter murder, it is not economically efficient, and its effects are irreversible. There is not one good reason to keep executing wrongdoers in the United States or anywhere else. Capital punishment goes against the morals and standards that our country is based upon. A punishment that inflicts harm on a person can hardly be good or moral if it is purposeless. A punishment may be given to a wrongdoer for one or a combination of the following reasons: (1) to protect the community from the criminal returning to previous activity, (2) to rehabilitate the offender; and (3) to restore the moral order breached by the violation. Capital punishment is not required to accomplish any of these purposes. Other alternatives work better or at least as well (Robinson, 1999, October 7). Enhanced oxidative stress and changes in antioxidant capacity, found in both clinical and experimental diabetes, are thought to be the main cause of chronic diabetic complications, in particular at a microvascular level (Moussa 2008). Excessively high levels of free radicals cause damage to vital cellular components such as proteins, membrane lipids, and nucleic acids, and finally lead to cell death (Maritim, Sanders Watkins 2003). The formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), is another factor to be considered in diabetes type 2 microvascular nephropathy (Motawi et al., 2013). Interaction of AGEs with their cellular receptors (RAGE) has an important role in the pathogenesis of diabetic complications via enhanced expression of adhesion molecules, including vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM 1), and intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM 1), both markers of vascular injury (Motawi et al., 2013). Motawi et al. • 36. The Love Triangle In Emily Bronte s Wuthering Heights Everyone likes a good love story, myself included. It is no surprise, that a multitude of authors write love stories. Books with other plots, often, have love stories hidden in them. Love stories are often dramatic, romantic, and intriguing. These characteristics are displayed in Wuthering Heights by way of a love triangle. To better understand the love triangle portrayed in Emily BrontГ« s Wuthering Heights, one should analyze BrontГ« s life and early works, the childhood of Catherine, Heathcliff, and Hindley, and the personalities Catherine and Heathcliff. In essence, Emily BrontГ« was born at her father s parsonage in Thornton, near, Bradford, in Yorkshire, on July 30,1818, the fifth of six children born to Patrick BrontГ« and Maria Branwell in seven years (Benvenuto 2). Emily BrontГ«, like her sister, inherited Celtic blood, together with a stern and stoical tradition of daily life (Winnifrith 119). She was a wayward, imaginative girl, physically delicate, brought up in loneliness and poverty, amid a harsh yet noble landscape of hill, moor and stream (Winnifrith 119). ... The BrontГ« household was mainly kept in touch with the current literature, the criticism, poetry, and fiction of their day (Winnifrith 119). Furthermore, All of the BrontГ«s learned to write in the same minute hand, by which they could cover a small page with hundreds of words and keep their writing secret later a consideration of greater importance to Emily (Benvenuto 6). The BrontГ« children wrote together and had their own roles in the works of literature they composed. Emily and her sister, Anne decided to write their own story with a fantasy world after their Brother Branwell allowed them to give him ideas for his own story but did not include them in writing it (Benvenuto 6). The sisters story was ...a saga centered on an imaginary island in the north Pacific, called Gondal (Benvenuto 6). Gondal appears in the earliest piece of writing from Bronte that we have, a diary entry dated November 24, 1834, when she was sixteen years old (Benvenuto 6). If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently... Romans 12; 6 8 Leadership is an influence relationship between leaders and followers who intend real changes and outcomes that reflect their shared purposes. The explanation would be, influence is involved in leadership. Leadership is reciprocal, in many organization the superiors influences their subordinates but in some organization subordinates influences their superiors. Leadership involves creating change and the changes are towards the outcome which the leaders and followers both want. An important aspect would be influencing others to follow a common vision. Leadership is a people activity. Since leadership involves people, there are followers. Every individual who has a great skill and is expertise in their field is a leader for example musician, scientist, etc. In the leadership process follower is very essential. • 41. RNA World Hypothesis Essay RNA world hypothesis is a hypothesis to explain the origins of cells. According to the theory, a form of RNA, or ribonucleic acid, developed that was capable of self replicating. It is said to be the earliest life forms, from which all other organisms come. While modern organisms are built up from proteins, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), and RNA, this organism is said to have consisted only of DNA. The reason scientists believe RNA was the first biomolecular structure is because it stores information in a similar role to DNA, but at the same time acts as a catalyst in some reactions, like protein. Catalysts accelerate the rate of reactions necessary to metabolize, or balance a cell. Essentially, RNA fulfills some roles of DNA and protein, thus... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For one thing, prebiotic Earth did not have favorable conditions for the formation of nucleotides by any means. One such problem is that nucleotides require a phosphate group to link, which is implausible to have occurred naturally without life The hazardous conditions of prebiotic Earth would also be constantly damaging and denaturing chemicals forming into RNA and traces of RNA, making it implausible for the RNA to cluster and begin replicating, as well as survive. Ribose likely would not be very sustainable within the early world, with the likely possibility of hydrolysis as one of many factors. Since its conception in the 60 s, RNA world hypothesis has seen numerous discoveries and possibilities. As recently as 2011, there were RNA components found in meteorites such as guanine and adenine. This implies RNA may have come from space. Glycolaldehyde has been found in a distant star system, which is necessary to form RNA, and further backs the idea of extraterrestrial origins of life. Tax reform is the smarter strategy rather than reducing the debt burden and it will grow the GDP faster. A dollar devoted to reducing marginal tax rates or to reducing the tax penalty against saving and investment will yield a higher return to the Australian economy, and thus to future generations, than a dollar used for retiring debt But even if we suspend our disbelief and assume that every surplus penny was used to buy down debt, the economic benefit would be trivial. The primary argument in favour of debt reduction is that it will relieve the burden from our children of having to pay off the debt in the future. But as long as we don t add to the debt over the next decade through a return to deficit spending, the debt burden on the next generation will fall automatically. It already is happening. Polycystic ovaries are the formation of clusters of pearl sized cysts containing immature eggs in the ovaries. In healthy women, a follicle grows and at the time of ovulation, an egg is released into the Fallopian tube. In women with polycystic ovary syndrome, the development of the follicle is arrested and the egg does not burst forth. Therefore, the egg dies and the follicle becomes a cyst that remains in the ovary (Banning 635 636). A clinical feature of polycystic ovary syndrome is anovulation. Anovulation is the absence of ovulation. Ovulation is the process in which the ovary releases an egg into the Fallopian tube. If an egg is not present to meet the sperm in the Fallopian tube, then conception cannot take place. If a woman is not ovulating then she is not able to conceive. Therefore, anovulation is the most common cause of infertility (Raffone, Rizzo and Benedetto 275). Anovulation is a symptom of insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is when the body s cells do not respond to insulin. When this happens the level of glucose in the blood increases. Insulin resistance may also cause more insulin to be produced as the body tries to move glucose into cells (Sedwick 1). A language that is deemed as having a global status is clarified by Crystal (2003, p.3) as one that achieves a genuinely global status when it develops a special role that is recognised in every country . Due to this prestigious standing that English has attained, it is unsurprising that many are keen to acquire it across the world. This is also supported by Wyse, Andrews and Hoffman (2010, P.398) who state English is much more favoured over the other official languages as a second language. As many learners are acquiring English in the context of a second or foreign language, the discussion over utilising the learner s first language in the process remains a contentious subject (Brown, 2000). • 46. Compare And Contrast Plato And The Matrix Plato and The Matrix Compare and Contrast In comparing the movie The Matrix to Plato s The Allegory of the Cave, both have a theme of trying to find the truth. In the Matrix, Neo is confronted with a difficult choice. Either he can choose the blue pill and forget that Morpheus ever confronted him with such news of the Matrix or he can take the red pill and find out the truth, which is that he has been living in a simulated fantasy world. The Allegory of the Cave is similar in that Plato attempts to explain reality. There are some epistemology questions that occur in both situations such as, what is truth, how do we find it, and how reliable are our perceptions? The people that are prisoners in the cave cannot see the world beyond the cave except for glimmers of light reflecting off the wall and therefore believe that the cave is the real world when in fact if they could escape to the outer world they would realize that outside the cave, in the light, is actually the real world. Another example of comparison is Plato s two world belief, a world of being and a world of becoming. The contrasts between the Matrix and the excerpt from Plato are that in the Matrix, the perceived reality that Neo is experiencing is a better description of what the reality outside the Matrix actually is. Outside the Matrix, Neo discovers a very dark, chaotic, and weird place. Whereas, the cave depicted in Plato s story is a scary and dark place and his place of ultimate reality is in the light ... How Does Ethanol Affect The Rate Of Respiration In Yeast The effect of ethanol on yeast respiration Purpose: To use the phenolphthalein indicator to indicate the respiratory activity of yeast cells Hypothesis: The greater the concentration of ethanol, the slower the rate of respiration will be. Conclusion We conducted this experiment in order to observe the rate of respiration in yeast cells. When yeast cells metabolize glucose, they produce carbon dioxide and that can change the color of water. This connects to the purpose of this lab because respiration produces CO2 which is acidic and lowers the solution s pH. Rate of respiration cannot be measured directly; however, it produces CO2 which is acidic and will lower the pH of a solution, meaning that if the solution s pH drops sufficiently, the color (huge indicator) would change. In this scenario, phenolphthalein, which changes color from pink to colorless at pH 8.2, was used. The time taken for decolorization corresponds to rate of CO2 production which is inversely proportionate to rate of respiration (shorter time = greater rate).
