What do we value? Where are our priorities? In whom do we put our trust? These are the
questions our lessons ask today. And these are the questions, we as Concordia Lutheran Church,
have been asking and continue to ask. Our scripture today, not only ask the questions, but
answers them, too. And we, as Concordia, can gain insight, excitement, and hope from the
answers. My first few days with you, I was not here in Superior, I was at Heartwood Conference
Center and Retreat in Trego attending the Fall Conference of our Northwest Synod of Wisconsin.
I was able to meet many of the pastors from our synod. Thank you for giving me that opportunity.
Our main speaker for the conference was Bishop Dick Graham, the bishop for Washington D.C.
As we talked about priorities for congregations, synods, and our denomination, he focused on two
Caring for the Poor and Making Disciples. That s what we are to be about as a church. And that s
exactly what our lessons for today talk about. Our Old TestamentText from Amos speaks judgment
against those not caring for the poor. Not caring for the poor is not something new. As we read
the Hebrew Scriptures (the Old Testament), we constantly hear God calling the Israelites to care

Aristotle gives two different accounts of God in his writings Physics and Metaphysics. Although
the two accounts differ in purpose, the first giving proof that God is the first mover, unmoved who
initiates motion in the universe and the second that God is the final cause at which all things aim.
In a survey of the two doctrines, it is evident that the two accounts are not incompatible, but rather
provide a more comprehensive and convincing argument for God.
In Physics 8.6, Aristotle gives an argument for the existence of God. He sets the foundation of his
argument on what is familiar to common experience the observation of motion. Each movement
has a cause, or source of its motion. Is this principle of motion intrinsic to the objects moved? Is it a
principle of movement exterior to the object that is moved that is the source of movement?
Aristotle addresses these inquiries and makes the argument that God is the first and fundamental
source of motion and change.
Aristotle begins his argument for God as an unchanging first mover unmoved on a concept
established in an earlier section of the Physics: that motion is necessary and unceasing. This

In American Teen, Hannah Bailey is an adolescent who lives with her grandparents. A teenager
