Mandatory Auditor Of The New Rule
Introduction
In 2014, the EU issued the requirement of mandatory auditor rotation in order to figure out the auditor
independence issues, however the Competition Commission delayed the introduction of the new rule
as it has a conflict with EU regulations. In fact, since the early 1970s, whether introduction of
mandatory auditor rotation has sparked much debate. The favourer often used to vindicate mandatory
auditor rotation rule is to enhance auditor independence, have a fresh view at the financial statement,
boost the public s perception of auditors independence and promote greater competition among audit
firms. The supporter of the rule has argued that each would result in an improvement in audit quality.
On the other hand, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In next section, I will critically discuss the supporter and objectors of views. In conclusion, I will
weigh both side opinion and give the clear view for introduction of mandatory auditor rotation.
Enhancing Auditor s Independence and Objectives Reducing the Earning Management
Convincing arguments can be made that the introduction of mandatory auditor rotation enhance
auditor independence that really improves the audit quality. In fact, audit firms are economically
bonded to its clients as there is a financial rewards associated with keeping a long term relationship
with an audit client. In order to maintain the longer period of audit firms tenure, auditors might be
enticed to overlook the issue of financial reporting such as earning management. Moreover, this
financial rewards also lead to auditors who lose objectivity in periodic audit engagements. Therefore,
auditor rotation may hold auditor back long term relationships with audit clients from
developing(Porter et al.,2014). It may lower the earning management and managing to earnings targets
owing to auditor rotation rules reducing the threats to auditor independence. This point can be
illustrated by a study which shows evidence of less earning management and less managing to
earnings targets from Italy, South Korea, and Brazil compared to the sample before introduction of
mandatory auditor rotation(Harris and Whisenant, 2012). Plenty of

Story Of An Hour And The Interlopers Comparison
The Story of an Hour and The Interlopers are both interesting stories about death. Both stories contain
the subject of death but The Interlopers is suspenseful while The Story of an Hour is just sad. Even
though The Story of an Hour and The Interlopers are written on two different topics they are still
similar, but they both have their differences. In the story The Interlopers death is an event that no one
wants or expects to happen. In the story of an hour death is a surprise but it is not unnatural. In the
story of an hour it comes as a surprise to hear that her husband died in a train wreck. In the book The
Interlopers it comes as a surprise that both men are willing to make up their differences and realize
how stupid their lifelong Coral has been. In The Interlopers the suspense ... Show more content on

And eventually die together as comrades. In the story of an hour the irony is whenever Mrs. Mallard
neighbors find out that her husband has died they try to break the news to her softly so that she will
not die from her heart condition, but it turns out that her husband never died in a train wreck, so her
surprise at seeing him walk in the door alive causes her to die. Some of the things that are very
different about these two stories are the setting. In The Interlopers the setting is outside in the woods
on a cold and stormy winter night. In the story of an hour the setting is in an apartment building during
a warm sunny spring day. Another thing that is very different between the two stories is the characters
in the story The Interlopers the characters are two rough German men who are are disputing over a

Ethical Dilemm Is It Ethical For The Defendant Of Driving...
Ethical dilemma: Is it ethical for the defendant to be convicted of driving under the influence (DUI)
while taking the prescription medication, methadone?
Professional audience for this paper: lawyers related to DUI cases and doctors who are sued for
prescribing methadone According to the recent analysis of Milliman Inc., 16% of car accidents
involved at least one prescription drug, and conjointly certain prescription drugs have drawn related
professional s attention because of their side effects, such as drowsiness, dizziness, and blurred vision.
In particular, as one of the most popular opioids that can lead someone into an impaired state,
methadone has frequently been raised as a controversial issue regarding DUI cases. For example, in ...

The most essential reason of methadone being such a controversy is that methadone has potential side
effects, such as drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision , and thus can put someone under the danger
of an automobile accident. It is true that the defendant may be convicted of DUI by methadone due to
his inconsistent driving, but the conviction depends on a two part test by the prosecution. First, the
blood test conducted at a state approved and certified lab must show appropriate threshold levels of
the drug in the defendant s system (Goodnough 1). Secondly, the police and the prosecution must
prove that the driver who tests positive for the medication was impaired to the point that he or she was
incapable of safe driving (Goodnough 1). However, both of these tests are subjective measurements of
one s level of impairment, and therefore, cannot avoid having some uncertainties.
During the blood test, for example, the presence of clots in the blood sample can artificially increase
the drug concentration on the report since blood is a heterogeneous mixture, which often forms clots.
The possibility of blood clotting cannot be ignored because it occurs very frequently for many
reasons, such as certain

The Effects Of The Watergate Scandal Of 1972
Some events in history have the power to linger over a nation and affect the world for years, the
Watergate Scandal of 1972 is one of them. The events that occurred on the morning of June 17, 1972
would have effects on American life and politics for years to come and ultimately lead to the downfall
of President Richard Nixon. The Watergate Scandal has proven to have had monumental effects on the
political culture of America. Although Nixon eventually resigned on August 9, 1974, the national
nightmare was not nearly over. Ever since the diminishment of Nixon s presidency: politics have
irrevocably lost its innocence, Americans have lost faith and trust in the government, and media has
become more aggressive with the evolution of journalism. The so called third rate burglary attempt
transpired on the morning of June 17, 1972. At this time Republican President Richard M. Nixon was
running for reelection and the United States was embroiled in the Vietnam War. On that memorable
day, five men broke into the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate Hotel in
Washington, D.C.. Consequently, those men were arrested for trying to bug and steal documents.
Optimistic voters believed there was no link between the president and the burglars and Nixon was
reelected. Initial investigations were heavily influenced by the media, particularly through the works
of Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein and their mysterious source Deep
Throat .

required to conduct a parachute assault to destroy the enemy forces and overwhelm key objectives and

Feeling Sympathy for Gertrude and Rhoda in The Withered...
Feeling Sympathy for Gertrude and Rhoda in The Withered Arm, by Thomas Hardy
The Withered arm is typical of Hardy s novellas, as it is a tragedy.
It involves two main characters, Rhoda and Gertrude. Rhoda and
Gertrude both have their own different problems that the must face.
Rhoda and Gertrude become friends after they first meet. Rhoda had an illegitimate child to farmer
lodge who marries Gertrude. Before Rhoda and Gertrude meet Rhoda does not know what Gertrude is
like so is bitter about the idea of her marrying farmer lodge who hardy hints
Rhoda is still in love with.
Rhoda is described to be old before her age and works as a milkmaid.

He tells her that she is very good looking and is also very ladylike. Gertrude wants to offer the boy a
lift home in the cart with them but farmer lodge doesn t want to, as the situation would obviously
make him awkward. He makes up an excuse that the boys round there are very strong and drives on.
This bit also makes you feel some sympathy for Rhoda but in a bitter way as she is old before her time
but is intelligent and hard working and farmer lodge has married a younger woman that seems
pleasant enough and even tried to help her son, but admittedly didn t know the situation.
Some time after the new wife has come to live with farmer lodge; hardy introduces the first hint of
witchcraft into the story. The rest of the story is based on the vision chapter so it is possibly the most
important and the following chapters could have been different. Rhoda is sat looking into her fireplace
and is sat there longer than she at first realized. She sees an image of Gertrude and she doesn t even
know what she looks like. She is almost scrying for her inadvertently. When she comes back to, she
goes to bed and falls to sleep. Gertrude comes to her in a vision and she looks strange and twisted. She
holds her ring finger in front of Rhode s face mocking and taunting her. Rhoda has nothing to do to
resist her. She sees her assailants arm stick out in

If you haven t tuned in to DC s Legends of Tomorrow just yet, you ll be in for a surprise: Firestorm is
back in the form of Martin Stein (Victor Garber) and Jax Jackson, who is played by Attack the Block
star Franz Drameh. The British actor is officially taking over half of Firestorm after the death of
Ronnie Raymond (Rob Amell), and he has just admitted that he initially geeked out when he found out
which character he was auditioning for! Drameh recently spoke to Comic Book Resources about
Legends of Tomorrow, where he admitted his love for comic books and the secret name for the
character he was reading for. I ve been a comic book fan my whole life, so when I was auditioning, the
character breakdown they gave me was Mystery Hero Michael. So I was like, okay, Drameh shared,
adding that the truth about the character dawned upon him while reading the lines. So I had a bit of a
read of it, and I was like: Stein this is Firestorm! But there s already a Firestorm! How is this going to

Essay about Out of This Furnace Analysis
Steel Mill Immigrants Of Industrial America
For many Americans, the late nineteenth century was a time of big business, marked by economic and
social evolution. In the period between the 1880 and 1920, the American economy was growing at a
rapid pace. Many European immigrants without industrial skills flooded into American factories and
steel mills. These new comer s came in search of better economic opportunity, which paved the way
for Heavy, low paying labor that became the job description of the era for many immigrants. One such
story of immigrants of the time is Thomas Bell s Out of this Furnace. This not only a story of three
generations of Slovaks and the challenges they faced but also about the Americanization and evolving

In the novel, Kracha s family is a full one. He has three daughters and a world of problems at home.
Despite this he refuses to waste away at the mill after a couple of years. So he sees opportunity, and
becomes a butcher. Unfortunately he fails at his attempts to climb the ranks economically. Kracha, like
most workers of the time, drowns him self in alcohol to hide from the problems of bills, finances and
taxes. Kracha s wife, Elena, had to take in boarders to lighten the economic load. This is a typical
practice of women in the mill towns. Not only did they take in boarders, but also they took care of the
house and had to raise the children wile sometimes taking odd jobs to make ends meat. The second
part of the novel is about Mike Dobrejcak who married, Kracha s eldest daughter, Mary. Mike is also a
mill worker, migrated to America when he was still in his teens. This second generation of Slovaks is
becoming more aware of politics, and how important their votes are in elections. With a greater
understanding of the issues around them the second generation of immigrants started to vote. Still
working in the mills they hold fast to the American dream. Faced with the same problems that the first
generation had, now he was faced with wage cuts along with the never ending struggles with the
union. The next part of the book is about Mary. When her husband (Mike) dies she is compensated
from the company and the local or lodge he is a part of. Since fatal accidents were common

This project examines the construction of subjectivity in...
This project examines the construction of subjectivity in Eleanor Antin s Carving: A Traditional
Sculpture (fig. 1) and Chris Kraus Aliens and Anorexia (fig. 2) . These works inscribe notions of the
self, the social, and the subject through and upon the body, addressing the interpolating poles of
nutritive consumption and willing the body away through self starvation. Throughout this essay, I will
demonstrate how these artists engage with the spaces and discourses created around food and
disordered eating to produce a counter dominant take on subjectivity, a thematic both artists attend to
regularly throughout their careers.

Before attending to theoretical concerns I will first ground my reading in art historical methods,
explicating the position of these works within Antin and Kraus larger oeuvres and within the historical
contexts of their production. An analysis of form and medium also underlines a reading of these works
that privileges self and subjectivity. In Carving, A Traditional Sculpture and Aliens and Anorexia, the
live or temporal practices common throughout Antin and Kraus careers are respectively mediated
through photography and texts. By removing the material body from works that are essentially
performative, the artist looks back over herself, commenting on, while creating her own lived
subjectivity.
I chose to position these two works together because, as Clare Johnson states in her study of Antin,
Vanessa Beecroft, and Elizabeth Manchester, I want to discuss the artworks in terms that do not
presuppose a proper form of feminist art practice, or suggest that the contemporary work supersedes
the critical strategies of the earlier piece. Johnson s articulated aims are not to claim any single artist
or artwork as feminist, per se, but to create rich and complex readings that articulate the inscriptions of
feminist practice and reflect the relational web of mutually constitutive meanings. This web frames a
discussion of Kraus and Antin s work, allowing for a critical co reading of works produced at different

Some of the world s cutest and most adored creatures, penguins, recently began to rapidly decrease
due to the careless actions of humans. When many people think of penguins they think of the cute,
small black and white bird, found at the zoo or in Antarctica. However, these beautiful creatures come
in all different sizes and shapes and there s an estimated 17 species of penguins which all vary in
different ways. For example, depending on their species one possibly weighs 2 pounds and another
weighs 90 pounds. This adorable creature s population faces a huge threat of going extinct, in

Even if it seems like something small, the population drop of krill created a much bigger effect. The
dropping of the krill population led to a food shortage for the penguins, leading to a population drop of
their own. Another problem, the ice melting due to climate change. Climate change, a leading effect,
caused by the greenhouse effect which refers to warming that happens when heat gets trapped by the
atmosphere that radiates from Earth towards space. Some gases block heat and it s ability to escape
causing the planet to overall heat up . According to ucar.edu too little ice and the colony gets more
exposed and vulnerable to predation, (Leifert). This leads to the penguins having less space to stay
concealed from predators such as animals like skuas, kelp gulls, and giant petrels. These predators
come after the chicks especially as they cannot defend themselves. This lack of ice leading to less
protection making the innocent penguins more vulnerable to predators. Another cause, the excessive
fishing and the careless efforts to enforce safety while doing so. Fishing efforts over the past couple of
years significantly increased. The penguin s prey such as anchovy and sardine stocks get caught
decreasing the penguin s food supply. According to Science Daily, As fishing efforts around the globe
have multiplied several fold over the last few decades, penguins are now competing with people for

Dracul Gothic Fiction In The Victorian Era
In the Victorian Era, Gothic fiction was an exceedingly popular literature genre among numerous
people because it was relatively new. Such elements as death, gloom, suspense, mystery, and terror
make up a Gothic novel in literature. The novel Dracula, written by Bram Stoker, was the ideal Gothic
fiction in the 19th century and still is today because of its incorporation of vampires, castles, spine
chilling murders, and overpowering emotions which contribute to the Gothic atmosphere. Dracula is
set in Transylvania, during the Victorian Era. The setting is extremely significant in Dracula because it
contributes abundantly to the Gothic atmosphere the novel possesses. In this novel, the setting
includes wild Transylvanian landscapes, dreary buildings, secret hidden rooms, an asylum, and a
graveyard. Such setting contribute to the novel s gothic ambiance because they are places that usually
tend to reveal a perturbing feeling to those surrounding it. The most seen settings in the novel Dracula
is Dracula s castle, the graveyard by St. Mary s Church and Dr. Seward s asylum which all contain
gloomy features that contribute to the Gothic atmosphere in Dracula. Dracula s castle is described as It
contains all in all some twenty acres, quite surrounded by the solid wall above mentioned. There are
many trees on it, which makes it in places gloomy, and there is a deep, dark looking pond or small
lake... (Stoker 22). The castle s abundant amount of trees surrounding the castle and

Iago, the Outsider of Shakespeare’s Othello
In any story with a recurring dark theme there always must be an outsider from humanity who
somehow stands out from the seemingly equal community. In the case of Shakespeare s Othello the
outsider from humanity would be Iago for he truly stands out from the rest of society. Although
Othello may be physically put out of the community, it seems that on an emotional and egotistical
level Iago puts himself out of society further then Othello s blackness does. He is not merely
manipulative, as other villains are; he turns aspects of truth and good qualities, which he does not
possess, and uses them as weakness for his own scheme. He deceives people to follow his plans by
telling them the truth and what seems to be good advice. By standing on ... Show more content on

Iago has no conscience and therefore unlike Othello or any other tragic hero asks for no redemption.
One of Iago s astucious qualities is his ability to take the good quality of others and use them against
them. He takes it even further, however, as he has no realization of the evil he has done. Iago suspects
Othello may have slept with his wife. He is not positive, but says that surety is not necessary.
Iago
But for my sport and profit. I hate the Moor,
And it is thought abroad that twixt my sheets
H as done my office. I know not if t be true,
But I, for mere suspicion in that kind,
Will do, as if for surety. (I, iii, 379 381)
This shows how Iago isn t really concerned about Emilia being unfaithful with Othello or anyone for
that matter. He just wants to ruin Othello beyond reason.
Iago takes what most of us see as good and uses those traits against characters in the play. He is able
to take something as pure as Othello and Desdemona s love or Cassio s loyalty as a weakness that he
can pounce on. He holds me well; The better shall my purpose work on him. (I, iii, 381 382) Iago
possesses no good qualities so as a jealous pay back he takes trust and turns it against the trusting and
then tries to take it even further for himself.
Iago
Cassio s a proper man. Let me see now;

Analysis Of The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao
The Faceless Man Throughout Junot Diaz s novel The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, the Man
Without a Face is a recurring character with no evident features. All of his scenes include an event in
which he is either a mysterious spectator watching the distress around himself or joins in on the
torture. His appearances throughout the story are suggestive of evil or violent incidents that are about
to occur. More times than not, the acts are performed by Trujillo s men. Almost consistently, he
emerges whenever one of the main characters is in great discord. The faceless man symbolizes the
foreshadowing of malicious occurrences caused by Fukú. Fukú is a prevalent theme throughout the
novel and is portrayed through the faceless man. The Washington Post speaks of their interview with

Kate Chopin s The Story Of An Hour
The Story of an Hour Analysis Don t be quick to jump to conclusions, not everything is what it
appears to be. Kate Chopin s short story, The Story of an Hour is a great representation of this. Chopin
s story is about the thoughts of a woman named Louise Mallard, after she is told that her husband has
died in an accident. The use of an omniscient third person narrator helps the reader understand what
all the characters are thinking. The setting correlates the title and the duration of the story, all events in
the story took place within an hour. The irony adds depth to the story, in the beginning Louise thinks
her husband has died, but then, she dies herself in the end. Chopin s use of narration, setting, and irony
clearly summarizes the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the story was told in first person, by Louise, the reader wouldn t get the full effect of the story, since
she dies at the end. Also the narrator gives Louise an excuse for acting so different when she finds out
her husband is dead. There was something coming to her and she was waiting for it, fearfully. What
was it? She did not know; it was too subtle and elusive to name. But she felt it, creeping out of the sky,
reaching toward her through the sounds, the scents, and the color that filled the air (Chopin 550). The
narrator makes it sound like it s not Louise s fault that she feels happy that her husband has died. And
concludes that her feelings are occurring because she feels free from her husband. If it were told in
first person, Louise would seem very apathetic and neglectful towards the situation. In addition, the
narrator explains how Louise s sister communicates the bad news. It was her sister Josephine who told
her, in broken sentences; veiled hints that revealed in half concealing (Chopin 549). The way
Josephine tells her sister about the tragedy is so indirect, that the narrator shields the reader from this
news just as Josephine

Sea World of Hurt
When I was little, I used to always want to go out and visit Marineland. At the tender age of 5 I was
mesmerized Free Willy, the kid s film about an orca who is freed into the wild by a little boy. I was
amazed by the creature on the screen every time I watched the film, it never got old. Of course at my
age I did not quite understand why Willy had to be freed from the seemingly nice pool he was allowed
to be living in. It was what made me want to visit Marineland to see one of these guys up close. I
visited for the first time when I was about 10, and I do not remember everything but what I do
remember is that I was more enticed with the rides and the gift shop than I was with their orcas. I used
to question why, but now I get it. The orca we saw was underwhelming, because of the sheer sadness
it emanated from the other side of the glass where it swam around in its small living area. It was not
Willy, the fun orca from my childhood. It was the stark reality of a combination of solitude and
mistreatment. I learned recently that the orca in Free Willy was released from captivity 9 years after
the film came out in 1993, and it died in the wild after only a year because it was too dependant on us.

injurious stimuli, which is recognize by the efferent role of nociceptors, and begin cell healing. This
process involves chemical mediators, which rush to the receptors on the primary sensory nociceptive
neurons in the peripheral nervous system through vasodilation and extravasation. This can occur in
injured skin, joints, and muscles. Specialized pro resolution mediators (SPMs) such as resovlins
resolve the acute inflammation and inhibit inflammatory pain through directly binding to nociceptor
receptors. Resolvin also activates ChemR23 which effectively inhibits the pain transduction ion
channel TRPV1. This acute pain and initial inflammation is protective in nature.
However, when chronic inflammation takes place, it can be damaging and leads to several diseases
including periodontal disease. The neuronal plasticity, through peripheral sensitization, is one aspect
for this transition into chronic pain. Central sensitization causes heightened responses ... Show more

It is more commonly attributed to the PNS with syndromes including: post herpetic neuralgia, HIV,
diabetic neuropathy, among others while the CNS is the source for spinal cord injury pain. Peripheral
neuropathic pain is usually localized to site of affected nerves. This pain changes the nociceptor
processing by altering the ion channel activity. The Nav1.7 gene mutation of the sodium channel is
one alteration. Another family of ion channels affected by neuropathic pain are the transient receptor
potential (TRP) channels. They regulate the action potential by gating the transmembrane ion influx.
Specifically, the TRPV1 channels on the C fibers. Activation of these unmyelinated nociceptors results
in burning and heat hyperalgesia. Neuropathic pain also imbalance of cytokines and chemokines in

The three travel to Bombay, where they spend a trivial amount of time. While here, Passepartout is
sent on errands to purchase more essentials. In his curiosity, he ventures within an Indian temples,
with his shoes on. Entering within such a temple as Passepartout did is regarded as a crime by the
English government, who respects the beliefs of the natives. The priests run him out, and Passepartout
is lucky to escape on a train with his master on way to Calcutta. The headlines which were produced
on English newspapers months ago were proven false. This is to say, the Bombay Calcutta railroad
was not truthfully finished. Mr. Fogg s voyage was cut abruptly at the end of the railroad track. The
passengers would have to travel the missing piece of the railroad by foot, a great delay to Phileas
Fogg. Fogg showed no emotion at this, and instead, searched about and purchased an elephant and
hired a guide. The adventure that would follow would imprint on Fogg a tinge of emotion in two
month s time. On way to Calcutta, through the jungles and on an elephant, the party encounters a
fanatical bunch of native Indians carrying an abducted princess, so the Parsee guide tells them. Fogg
wastes no time in telling his companions they must not delay and rescue the girl, regardless how much
time he might lose and the wager with it. The party awaits the morning, when Passepartout rescues the
girl from the platform where the fanatics were going to burn her.

Trial By Fire Did Daxas Execute An Innocent Man By David...
In David Grann s Trial by Fire: Did Texas Execute an Innocent Man? , published on September 7,
2009, the overall question addressed is whether we should keep the death penalty legal. Grann begins
his argument with his account of the events that occurred on the morning of December 23, 1991 in
Corsicana, Texas. Cameron Todd Willingham, the husband and father of three children awakes to a
blaze of fire in his one story house (I). Willingham exits out the front door and distraughtly tells a
nearby neighbor to call 911. By the time the fire is extinguished, Willingham s children are dead and
arson investigators come to the house to inspect four days later (I). The two investigators conclude
that the fire is arson and it is considered a triple murder committed by Willingham so they bring him
in for questioning. This along with neighborhood witness testimony leads to an arrest, which is
punishable by death under Texas law. Before the trial, the state gives Willingham a plea deal that if he
pleads guilty he will get life in prison avoiding the death penalty (I). Willingham rejects the plea deal
and is found guilty. From there, Grann uses sections II through V to pick holes in the original case of
the prosecution. Findings of Dr. Gerald Hurst give Willingham some sense of hope that his name
might be cleared as an experiment on Lime street is conducted. The intention is to recreate the scene
of a previous arson case similar to Willingham s (IV). In the original findings of the arson
investigators, the only way flashover can occur is by the presence of some sort of accelerant; however,
the experiment shows that flashover can still occur in a wood structured house and these signs of
flashover are similar to the signs of arson
(IV). Willingham s final appeal is denied by the Board of Pardons and Paroles so he is executed on
February 17th, 2006 (Gran V). The central argument Grann proposes in his article is that the death
penalty should be removed because without the implication of clear forensic evidence, we can never
be truly sure if an individual is guilty. He ends his essay with a statement from the commission
claiming that, There is a chance, however, that Texas could become the first state to acknowledge

I Walk Into A Pub
It is six thirty in the evening. I walk into a pub on Madison Avenue, shutting the door behind and
plunging into a blur of blissful silence. The pub is mostly deserted, except for an old man with ears
pointier than my own nose. He is reading a paper and frowning, and he oddly reminds me of Yoda. He
turns to me, smiles and nods in acknowledgement, before hopping down from the stool and hobbling
out into the evening. And then there is the bartender whose real name is Andy, but I call him the
bartender who does not drink. See, he had stopped drinking, albeit temporarily, back in May. Whiskey.
The bartender who does not drink hands me, not my usual beer but, a good old fashioned whiskey as I
make my way to the stool. Forget what the silly physicist say; I tell you, they have got it all wrong.
Sure, there is a center of the universe, but the current location of this center simply happens to be
sitting on a napkin directly in front of me. And it is called whiskey. A good old fashioned whiskey.
And to be frank, it is shaping up to be quite a challenge what was I thinking when I asked Andy to
help me transition from beer to whiskey? My book is laying open on the perfectly polished wooden
surface. Everything is clean and dark and silent; except that, from the corner of my eye, I can see
Andy silently eyeing the glass I have been nursing for the past hour or so, Do you want me to water it
down a bit for you? I shake my head from side to side, No, thanks. I got this. His

The, Flowers, And Fruits
Each of the pieces in the De Young museum have their merits, but few can, although debatable,
compare in boldness and complex simplicity to Beth Lipman s Candlesticks, Books, Flowers, Fruits.
Finished in 2010 by the American born artist, Candlesticks, Books, Flowers, Fruits is a life sized
sculpture that, in a general way of putting it, touches upon various contemporary themes and ideas
regarding opulence, indulgence, and the taints associated with such undertakings, all of which may be
naturally derived from one s perspective based interpretation. This art piece comprises of an ovular
table with an overabundance of constituents resting upon it, these constituents consisting of a medley
of flowers, vases, glasses, fruits, bowls, plates, books, candlesticks among other things, all of which
are sculpted from glass, coloured of glossy pitch black. This work, being a sculpture, was
unexpectedly assorted into the museum s Still Life gallery, implying its classification as a Still Life
piece. That being said, in a room full of captivating paintings, there is no evading this piece when one
strolls in a clear testament to its disturbingly engrossing power. Indeed, there are other life sized
sculptures present, but none perforate through their surroundings as irreverently as Lipman s piece.

opportunity to enter one s field of vision. Seemingly overflowing with sleekly smooth tar,

Odysseus Influence On Homer s Odyssey
Think you re escaping and run into yourself. Longest way round is the shortest way home (James
Joyce). A profound summary of the themes in Joyce s Ulysses, the quote above deals with journey,
escapism, identity, and nostalgia; all important parts of everyday life. Ulysses, however, was far from
the first literary work to deal with themes such as those. Indeed, the works of Joyce, as well as Dante,
Milton, and Virgil can be directly traced to the works of Homer, specifically the Odyssey. One of the
most translated, discussed, and taught literary works of all time, the influence of Homer s Odyssey
cannot be understated. Although Odysseus s journey is magnificent and supernatural, the epic
discusses the deeply personal struggles of one man, swept up in forces beyond his control, as well as
telling one of the first, if not the very first, coming of age stories. The account of Odysseus and
Telemachus deeply influenced not only western literature, but also music and media. In addition, the
Odyssey contains numerous insights into the culture of the ancient Greeks, the originators of Western
Culture as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

absurd world will remain timeless because of its relatability, especially for college aged people. The
word odyssey has been adapted into the English language to mean a great journey. In a way, every
person on this earth experiences their own odyssey through life. To feel tossed about by life s
randomness and seeming cruelty while just trying to get by is part of the human condition. By taking
that feeling and making it fit a story containing gods, monsters, love, and war, Homer created a work

Baker s Cyst Removal
The man who first discovered the baker s cyst in the mid 1800 s was a british man named Dr. William
Morant Baker. A baker s cyst also known as a popliteal cyst is located in the middle of the
semimembranosus tendon and medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle (Snir, 2013). Sometimes the
Baker s cyst can be mistaken for a blood clot because it presents the same symptoms. A magnetic
resonance imaging scan (MRI) can determine if the patient indeed has a cyst on the back of their leg.
Other tests may be done to make sure that the cyst is not a malignant or benign tumor before the
surgeon tries to excise it. A baker s cyst is formed when a patient has damage, arthritis, or a meniscus
tear in their knee. Rheumatoid arthritis and Osteoarthritis are generally the main cause of a formation
of a baker s cyst (Houston Methodist, 2015). Although any kind of knee injury could eventually lead
to a painful baker s cyst. Too much exercise can also hinder the healing of the cyst. Wright (2015)
stated that, A Baker s cyst most commonly occurs in children aged 4 to 7 years and in adults aged 35
to 70 years, as you can see that is a very large age gap. The cyst behind a child s knee rarely ever
affects them and goes away in time, but for an adult it is harder to get rid of because the cyst is from a
current knee joint problem.
Most cases where it is not serious the cyst is usually aspirated of fluid. If the

Supporting Moral Subjectivism
To begin, the term moral subjectivism implies that beliefs are individualized and correct for the said
individual. In essence, there is no real definitive truth that can be applied to moral sentences or beliefs.
For example, two people can have beliefs about the number 13 (or number 4 in the Chinese culture)
One highly religious person can believe it s the devil s number and will lead to murder, chaos, and
violence and for another person, possibly of a different moral code or of time period, (such as the
ancient Egyptians), it can be their lucky or spiritual number. Our text provides four reasons for
supporting moral subjectivism. These reasons include: The fact that feelings are subjective, often
disagreed on, and no one feeling or belief

The Problem of Acid Rain Essay
The Problem of Acid Rain
WHAT CAUSES ACID RAIN
When power stations, factories, houses and cars release pollution into the air it has chemicals in it
called sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides.
SULPHUR DIOXIDE: Man made sulphur dioxide comes mainly from burning fossils fuels in power
stations. It then mixes with water in the atmosphere to make sulphuric acid, which will later fall as
acid rain.
NITROGEN OXIDES: Nitrogen oxides are also man made and mainly come from car exhausts. These
gases also go into the atmosphere and mix with water to form nitric acid, which once again falls as
acid rain.

Acid rain not only damages soil but can also affect the trees directly. Pollutants can block or damage
the little pores on the leaves through which the plant takes in the air it needs to survive.
LAKES AND WATER Acid rain can damage the water and the wildlife in lakes. A lake that has been
affected by acid rain looks clean and crystal clear, but contains no life. Most wild plants and animals
that live in clean, unpolluted lakes cannot live in acid waters.
Fish are poisoned by the aluminium which is washed out of the ground into the lakes. Lakes also
receive rainfall directly from the sky.
A healthy lake has a pH of around 6.5 and a large number of plants, insects and fish can live there. In
addition, there are a number of animals and birds that feed on the plentiful food in a healthy lake.
As the lake becomes more acidic (the pH gets smaller) the fish find it more difficult to reproduce
successfully, as the young fish find it difficult to live in the high levels of acidity and die. It is not only
the acid in the water that kills them, but also poisonous minerals like aluminium that are washed out of
the surrounding ground into the water. The birds that eat the fish also begin to suffer as the harmful

The Pros And Cons Of Lowering The Drinking Age
As teenagers ourselves, we know that most will want to be rebellious at some point. An illegal option,
alcohol makes for a perfect way for teens to be rebellious. With a minimum legal drinking age of 21,
many teenagers are able to use drinking as a rebellious act. If the drinking age were 18, it would be
different. A 19 year old could not drink to rebel. A large part of what makes alcohol so appealing to
teenagers is its forbidden nature. Forbidden fruit tastes the sweetest. People want what they cannot
have. Having a minimum legal drinking age of 18 would eliminate the desirable forbidden aspect,
thereby making drinking less attractive to teens.
Pretend two teenagers are drinking. One gets hurt and needs medical attention. It is likely that the
other teen will hesitate to take the injured friend to get the needed attention due to fear that they will
both get in trouble. Lowering the drinking will eliminate this situation. It will reduce the number of
underage people having alcohol related injuries due to fear of the consequence. According to the
article Should the Drinking Age Be Lowered from 21 to a Younger Age? , 17 states and Washington,
DC will allow underage drinkers to report injuries without punishment. That means in 33 states,
injuries could be going untreated out of fear. Recently, a 20 year old died at a Florida State College

Van Gogh Houses In Auvers
Beyond the Beauty
When having to choose two works of art to compare and analyze, it had occurred to me that one of my
all time favorite artist has always been Vincent Van Gogh. After searching through countless of Van
Gogh s magnificent works of art, I knew I wanted to analyze Houses in Auvers . Once I chose my first
painting, the second piece fell right into place. Since Van Gogh was a painter in the post impressionist
movement, deciding to choose another painter from that movement worked out well. I chose, Auvers,

realize at least two elements: houses, and the beauty. Although, looking beyond the beauty of the
town, there are many more comparisons.

to a point, more vibrant than Cezanne s. The color in both works of art accomplishes much more than
add to the beauty of the surroundings and landscape. The color used in both these paintings does a
stunning job describing the world around them. Even though the color may be dull, it adds to the
emotion of both paintings. With Cezanne s having a bigger point of view than Van Gogh s, the color is
distributed immensely in Auvers, Panoramic view . Having this be said, in Cezanne s the viewer gains
a superior perspective on the surroundings and the atmosphere the town gives off. Even with the dull

Language Issues During The Franco And Franco s The Catalan...
Language is a huge part of our construction of identity. Language allows us to feel like we belong in a
community or social group, record past events, bring people together (socially, culturally and
politically), express feelings and emotions, or develop a deeper understanding of a particular culture
and history. Moreover, every language is constantly changing over time and more people are
becoming more open to learn more than one language. Spain is one the countries which deals with
multilingualism. More specifically, in Catalonia, where being bilingual is no longer a controversy in
today s society. My objective of this paper is to further explore bilingualism from during Franco and
after Franco regarding the Catalan language and the Castilian (Spanish) language in the state of
Catalonia in Spain. My research will be guided by the following questions: What were the language
issues during the Franco regime and after Franco s death? Were there any consequences during the
Franco regime? What is the current language situation in Catalonia? How has it affected Spain? Is one
language more important than the other? Are educational institutions required to teach Catalan as well
as Castilian? The paper will be organized as follows: First, I will provide a brief history of Catalonia s
linguistic issues during the Franco regime (1939 1975). Second, I will explain the language policy
changes after Franco s reign. Third, I will discuss bilingualism in Catalonia from the last few years

  • 2. Mandatory Auditor Of The New Rule Introduction In 2014, the EU issued the requirement of mandatory auditor rotation in order to figure out the auditor independence issues, however the Competition Commission delayed the introduction of the new rule as it has a conflict with EU regulations. In fact, since the early 1970s, whether introduction of mandatory auditor rotation has sparked much debate. The favourer often used to vindicate mandatory auditor rotation rule is to enhance auditor independence, have a fresh view at the financial statement, boost the public s perception of auditors independence and promote greater competition among audit firms. The supporter of the rule has argued that each would result in an improvement in audit quality. On the other hand, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In next section, I will critically discuss the supporter and objectors of views. In conclusion, I will weigh both side opinion and give the clear view for introduction of mandatory auditor rotation. Enhancing Auditor s Independence and Objectives Reducing the Earning Management Convincing arguments can be made that the introduction of mandatory auditor rotation enhance auditor independence that really improves the audit quality. In fact, audit firms are economically bonded to its clients as there is a financial rewards associated with keeping a long term relationship with an audit client. In order to maintain the longer period of audit firms tenure, auditors might be enticed to overlook the issue of financial reporting such as earning management. Moreover, this financial rewards also lead to auditors who lose objectivity in periodic audit engagements. Therefore, auditor rotation may hold auditor back long term relationships with audit clients from developing(Porter et al.,2014). It may lower the earning management and managing to earnings targets owing to auditor rotation rules reducing the threats to auditor independence. This point can be illustrated by a study which shows evidence of less earning management and less managing to earnings targets from Italy, South Korea, and Brazil compared to the sample before introduction of mandatory auditor rotation(Harris and Whisenant, 2012). • 3. Story Of An Hour And The Interlopers Comparison The Story of an Hour and The Interlopers are both interesting stories about death. Both stories contain the subject of death but The Interlopers is suspenseful while The Story of an Hour is just sad. Even though The Story of an Hour and The Interlopers are written on two different topics they are still similar, but they both have their differences. In the story The Interlopers death is an event that no one wants or expects to happen. In the story of an hour death is a surprise but it is not unnatural. In the story of an hour it comes as a surprise to hear that her husband died in a train wreck. In the book The Interlopers it comes as a surprise that both men are willing to make up their differences and realize how stupid their lifelong Coral has been. In The Interlopers the suspense ... In the story of an hour the irony is whenever Mrs. Mallard neighbors find out that her husband has died they try to break the news to her softly so that she will not die from her heart condition, but it turns out that her husband never died in a train wreck, so her surprise at seeing him walk in the door alive causes her to die. Some of the things that are very different about these two stories are the setting. In The Interlopers the setting is outside in the woods on a cold and stormy winter night. In the story of an hour the setting is in an apartment building during a warm sunny spring day. Another thing that is very different between the two stories is the characters in the story The Interlopers the characters are two rough German men who are are disputing over a piece of land. • 4. Ethical Dilemm Is It Ethical For The Defendant Of Driving... Ethical dilemma: Is it ethical for the defendant to be convicted of driving under the influence (DUI) while taking the prescription medication, methadone? Professional audience for this paper: lawyers related to DUI cases and doctors who are sued for prescribing methadone According to the recent analysis of Milliman Inc., 16% of car accidents involved at least one prescription drug, and conjointly certain prescription drugs have drawn related professional s attention because of their side effects, such as drowsiness, dizziness, and blurred vision. In particular, as one of the most popular opioids that can lead someone into an impaired state, methadone has frequently been raised as a controversial issue regarding DUI cases. For example, in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most essential reason of methadone being such a controversy is that methadone has potential side effects, such as drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision , and thus can put someone under the danger of an automobile accident. It is true that the defendant may be convicted of DUI by methadone due to his inconsistent driving, but the conviction depends on a two part test by the prosecution. First, the blood test conducted at a state approved and certified lab must show appropriate threshold levels of the drug in the defendant s system (Goodnough 1). Secondly, the police and the prosecution must prove that the driver who tests positive for the medication was impaired to the point that he or she was incapable of safe driving (Goodnough 1). However, both of these tests are subjective measurements of one s level of impairment, and therefore, cannot avoid having some uncertainties. During the blood test, for example, the presence of clots in the blood sample can artificially increase the drug concentration on the report since blood is a heterogeneous mixture, which often forms clots. The possibility of blood clotting cannot be ignored because it occurs very frequently for many reasons, such as certain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Effects Of The Watergate Scandal Of 1972 Some events in history have the power to linger over a nation and affect the world for years, the Watergate Scandal of 1972 is one of them. The events that occurred on the morning of June 17, 1972 would have effects on American life and politics for years to come and ultimately lead to the downfall of President Richard Nixon. The Watergate Scandal has proven to have had monumental effects on the political culture of America. Although Nixon eventually resigned on August 9, 1974, the national nightmare was not nearly over. Ever since the diminishment of Nixon s presidency: politics have irrevocably lost its innocence, Americans have lost faith and trust in the government, and media has become more aggressive with the evolution of journalism. The so called third rate burglary attempt transpired on the morning of June 17, 1972. At this time Republican President Richard M. Nixon was running for reelection and the United States was embroiled in the Vietnam War. On that memorable day, five men broke into the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C.. Consequently, those men were arrested for trying to bug and steal documents. Optimistic voters believed there was no link between the president and the burglars and Nixon was reelected. Initial investigations were heavily influenced by the media, particularly through the works of Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein and their mysterious source Deep Throat . Feeling Sympathy for Gertrude and Rhoda in The Withered Arm, by Thomas Hardy The Withered arm is typical of Hardy s novellas, as it is a tragedy. It involves two main characters, Rhoda and Gertrude. Rhoda and Gertrude both have their own different problems that the must face. Rhoda and Gertrude become friends after they first meet. Rhoda had an illegitimate child to farmer lodge who marries Gertrude. Before Rhoda and Gertrude meet Rhoda does not know what Gertrude is like so is bitter about the idea of her marrying farmer lodge who hardy hints Rhoda is still in love with. He tells her that she is very good looking and is also very ladylike. Gertrude wants to offer the boy a lift home in the cart with them but farmer lodge doesn t want to, as the situation would obviously make him awkward. He makes up an excuse that the boys round there are very strong and drives on. This bit also makes you feel some sympathy for Rhoda but in a bitter way as she is old before her time but is intelligent and hard working and farmer lodge has married a younger woman that seems pleasant enough and even tried to help her son, but admittedly didn t know the situation. Some time after the new wife has come to live with farmer lodge; hardy introduces the first hint of witchcraft into the story. The rest of the story is based on the vision chapter so it is possibly the most important and the following chapters could have been different. Rhoda is sat looking into her fireplace and is sat there longer than she at first realized. She sees an image of Gertrude and she doesn t even know what she looks like. She is almost scrying for her inadvertently. When she comes back to, she goes to bed and falls to sleep. Gertrude comes to her in a vision and she looks strange and twisted. She holds her ring finger in front of Rhode s face mocking and taunting her. Rhoda has nothing to do to resist her. She sees her assailants arm stick out in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This project examines the construction of subjectivity in Eleanor Antin s Carving: A Traditional Sculpture (fig. 1) and Chris Kraus Aliens and Anorexia (fig. 2) . These works inscribe notions of the self, the social, and the subject through and upon the body, addressing the interpolating poles of nutritive consumption and willing the body away through self starvation. Throughout this essay, I will demonstrate how these artists engage with the spaces and discourses created around food and disordered eating to produce a counter dominant take on subjectivity, a thematic both artists attend to regularly throughout their careers. Before attending to theoretical concerns I will first ground my reading in art historical methods, explicating the position of these works within Antin and Kraus larger oeuvres and within the historical contexts of their production. An analysis of form and medium also underlines a reading of these works that privileges self and subjectivity. In Carving, A Traditional Sculpture and Aliens and Anorexia, the live or temporal practices common throughout Antin and Kraus careers are respectively mediated through photography and texts. By removing the material body from works that are essentially performative, the artist looks back over herself, commenting on, while creating her own lived subjectivity. I chose to position these two works together because, as Clare Johnson states in her study of Antin, Vanessa Beecroft, and Elizabeth Manchester, I want to discuss the artworks in terms that do not presuppose a proper form of feminist art practice, or suggest that the contemporary work supersedes the critical strategies of the earlier piece. Johnson s articulated aims are not to claim any single artist or artwork as feminist, per se, but to create rich and complex readings that articulate the inscriptions of feminist practice and reflect the relational web of mutually constitutive meanings. The inflammatory response functions to remove the injurious stimuli, which is recognize by the efferent role of nociceptors, and begin cell healing. This process involves chemical mediators, which rush to the receptors on the primary sensory nociceptive neurons in the peripheral nervous system through vasodilation and extravasation. This can occur in injured skin, joints, and muscles. Specialized pro resolution mediators (SPMs) such as resovlins resolve the acute inflammation and inhibit inflammatory pain through directly binding to nociceptor receptors. Resolvin also activates ChemR23 which effectively inhibits the pain transduction ion channel TRPV1. This acute pain and initial inflammation is protective in nature. • 25. Trial By Fire Did Daxas Execute An Innocent Man By David... In David Grann s Trial by Fire: Did Texas Execute an Innocent Man? , published on September 7, 2009, the overall question addressed is whether we should keep the death penalty legal. Grann begins his argument with his account of the events that occurred on the morning of December 23, 1991 in Corsicana, Texas. Cameron Todd Willingham, the husband and father of three children awakes to a blaze of fire in his one story house (I). Willingham exits out the front door and distraughtly tells a nearby neighbor to call 911. By the time the fire is extinguished, Willingham s children are dead and arson investigators come to the house to inspect four days later (I). The two investigators conclude that the fire is arson and it is considered a triple murder committed by Willingham so they bring him in for questioning. This along with neighborhood witness testimony leads to an arrest, which is punishable by death under Texas law. Before the trial, the state gives Willingham a plea deal that if he pleads guilty he will get life in prison avoiding the death penalty (I). Willingham rejects the plea deal and is found guilty. From there, Grann uses sections II through V to pick holes in the original case of the prosecution. Findings of Dr. Gerald Hurst give Willingham some sense of hope that his name might be cleared as an experiment on Lime street is conducted. The intention is to recreate the scene of a previous arson case similar to Willingham s (IV). In the original findings of the arson investigators, the only way flashover can occur is by the presence of some sort of accelerant; however, the experiment shows that flashover can still occur in a wood structured house and these signs of flashover are similar to the signs of arson (IV). Willingham s final appeal is denied by the Board of Pardons and Paroles so he is executed on February 17th, 2006 (Gran V). The central argument Grann proposes in his article is that the death penalty should be removed because without the implication of clear forensic evidence, we can never be truly sure if an individual is guilty. The Baker s Cyst Removal Garcia, Amber Baker s Cyst Removal MDA 130 Mr. Kennedy Baker s Cyst Removal The man who first discovered the baker s cyst in the mid 1800 s was a british man named Dr. William Morant Baker. A baker s cyst also known as a popliteal cyst is located in the middle of the semimembranosus tendon and medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle (Snir, 2013). Sometimes the Baker s cyst can be mistaken for a blood clot because it presents the same symptoms. A magnetic resonance imaging scan (MRI) can determine if the patient indeed has a cyst on the back of their leg. Other tests may be done to make sure that the cyst is not a malignant or benign tumor before the surgeon tries to excise it. A baker s cyst is formed when a patient has damage, arthritis, or a meniscus tear in their knee. Rheumatoid arthritis and Osteoarthritis are generally the main cause of a formation of a baker s cyst (Houston Methodist, 2015). Although any kind of knee injury could eventually lead to a painful baker s cyst. Too much exercise can also hinder the healing of the cyst. Wright (2015) stated that, A Baker s cyst most commonly occurs in children aged 4 to 7 years and in adults aged 35 to 70 years, as you can see that is a very large age gap. The cyst behind a child s knee rarely ever affects them and goes away in time, but for an adult it is harder to get rid of because the cyst is from a current knee joint problem. Most cases where it is not serious the cyst is usually aspirated of fluid. If the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In essence, there is no real definitive truth that can be applied to moral sentences or beliefs. For example, two people can have beliefs about the number 13 (or number 4 in the Chinese culture) One highly religious person can believe it s the devil s number and will lead to murder, chaos, and violence and for another person, possibly of a different moral code or of time period, (such as the ancient Egyptians), it can be their lucky or spiritual number. Our text provides four reasons for supporting moral subjectivism. These reasons include: The fact that feelings are subjective, often disagreed on, and no one feeling or belief ... In agreed value insurance policies, you are in control of the amount your classic motorcycle is insured for with your provider. Once the amount is chosen, then your premium payments will be based on the figure you and your insurance provider agreed to. An agreed value policy reduces the risk of you not being able to rebuild or replace your classic motorcycle in the event of a loss. • 35. The Problem of Acid Rain Essay The Problem of Acid Rain WHAT CAUSES ACID RAIN When power stations, factories, houses and cars release pollution into the air it has chemicals in it called sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. SULPHUR DIOXIDE: Man made sulphur dioxide comes mainly from burning fossils fuels in power stations. It then mixes with water in the atmosphere to make sulphuric acid, which will later fall as acid rain. NITROGEN OXIDES: Nitrogen oxides are also man made and mainly come from car exhausts. These gases also go into the atmosphere and mix with water to form nitric acid, which once again falls as acid rain. WHAT EFFECTS DOES ACID RAIN HAVE ON THE ENVIRONMENT ? SOILS, TREES AND PLANTS. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This makes it easier for fungi and insects to attack the tree, and as a result the tree may die. [IMAGE] Acid rain not only damages soil but can also affect the trees directly. Pollutants can block or damage the little pores on the leaves through which the plant takes in the air it needs to survive. LAKES AND WATER Acid rain can damage the water and the wildlife in lakes. A lake that has been affected by acid rain looks clean and crystal clear, but contains no life. Most wild plants and animals that live in clean, unpolluted lakes cannot live in acid waters. Fish are poisoned by the aluminium which is washed out of the ground into the lakes. Lakes also receive rainfall directly from the sky. A healthy lake has a pH of around 6.5 and a large number of plants, insects and fish can live there. In addition, there are a number of animals and birds that feed on the plentiful food in a healthy lake. As the lake becomes more acidic (the pH gets smaller) the fish find it more difficult to reproduce successfully, as the young fish find it difficult to live in the high levels of acidity and die. It is not only the acid in the water that kills them, but also poisonous minerals like aluminium that are washed out of the surrounding ground into the water. The birds that eat the fish also begin to suffer as the harmful

  • 37. The Pros And Cons Of Lowering The Drinking Age As teenagers ourselves, we know that most will want to be rebellious at some point. An illegal option, alcohol makes for a perfect way for teens to be rebellious. With a minimum legal drinking age of 21, many teenagers are able to use drinking as a rebellious act. If the drinking age were 18, it would be different. A 19 year old could not drink to rebel. A large part of what makes alcohol so appealing to teenagers is its forbidden nature. Forbidden fruit tastes the sweetest. People want what they cannot have. Having a minimum legal drinking age of 18 would eliminate the desirable forbidden aspect, thereby making drinking less attractive to teens. Pretend two teenagers are drinking. One gets hurt and needs medical attention. It is likely that the other teen will hesitate to take the injured friend to get the needed attention due to fear that they will both get in trouble. Lowering the drinking will eliminate this situation. It will reduce the number of underage people having alcohol related injuries due to fear of the consequence. According to the article Should the Drinking Age Be Lowered from 21 to a Younger Age? , 17 states and Washington, DC will allow underage drinkers to report injuries without punishment. That means in 33 states, injuries could be going untreated out of fear. Recently, a 20 year old died at a Florida State College fraternity party where police found alcoholic beverage bottles (Hechtman). Medical personnel could have helped the student if his peers ... • 39. Van Gogh Houses In Auvers Beyond the Beauty When having to choose two works of art to compare and analyze, it had occurred to me that one of my all time favorite artist has always been Vincent Van Gogh. After searching through countless of Van Gogh s magnificent works of art, I knew I wanted to analyze Houses in Auvers . Once I chose my first painting, the second piece fell right into place. Since Van Gogh was a painter in the post impressionist movement, deciding to choose another painter from that movement worked out well. I chose, Auvers, Panoramic View , painted by Paul Cezanne. A majority of people admiring these paintings would realize at least two elements: houses, and the beauty. Although, looking beyond the beauty of the town, there are many more comparisons. The color in both works of art accomplishes much more than add to the beauty of the surroundings and landscape. The color used in both these paintings does a stunning job describing the world around them. Even though the color may be dull, it adds to the emotion of both paintings. With Cezanne s having a bigger point of view than Van Gogh s, the color is distributed immensely in Auvers, Panoramic view . In the book, The Things They Carried, by Tim O Brien; the men in combat carried many things, each with a specific purpose for survival. Each man carried individual items, which weighed between 12 and 18 pounds, and added onto this weight with other necessities for the whole group. The necessities the men carried depended upon a man s rate of metabolism, and their habits. All the men were required to carry large 5 lb steel helmets, and jungle boots, with a weight of 2.1 lbs. Another requirement was that all the men carry a steel centered, nylon covered flak jacket, with a weight of 6.7lbs. • 41. Language Issues During The Franco And Franco s The Catalan... Language is a huge part of our construction of identity. Language allows us to feel like we belong in a community or social group, record past events, bring people together (socially, culturally and politically), express feelings and emotions, or develop a deeper understanding of a particular culture and history. Moreover, every language is constantly changing over time and more people are becoming more open to learn more than one language. Spain is one the countries which deals with multilingualism. More specifically, in Catalonia, where being bilingual is no longer a controversy in today s society. My objective of this paper is to further explore bilingualism from during Franco and after Franco regarding the Catalan language and the Castilian (Spanish) language in the state of Catalonia in Spain. My research will be guided by the following questions: What were the language issues during the Franco regime and after Franco s death? Were there any consequences during the Franco regime? What is the current language situation in Catalonia? How has it affected Spain? Is one language more important than the other? Are educational institutions required to teach Catalan as well as Castilian? The paper will be organized as follows: First, I will provide a brief history of Catalonia s linguistic issues during the Franco regime (1939 1975). Second, I will explain the language policy changes after Franco s reign. Third, I will discuss bilingualism in Catalonia from the last few years ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
