Introduction:
During this study we assessed the effect lying had on the autonomic nervous system by monitoring
galvanic skin response (GSR). We used GSR, a measure of the skin conductivity, as a very basic
form of polygraph test. The electronic conductivity of skin in not held constant. Instead, it changes
based on the current state of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS is comprised of the
sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system (Gazzaniga and Heatherton, 2015). The
sympathetic branch causes increases in arousal. It controls responses such as pupil dilation,
increased heart rate, and decreased digestive activity that are normally associated with the fight or
flight response (Gazzaniga and Heatherton, 2015). The parasympathetic branch acts in opposition to
the sympathetic nervous system. It lowers arousal and returns the body to normal resting conditions.
We believe that the act of lying will cause the sympathetic nervous system to increase arousal
resulting in higher skin conductivity and therefore larger changes in GSR. As a result, we
hypothesize that lying will cause a larger mean change in GSR height then telling the truth.
Methods:
Participants Two undergraduates (1 male, 1 female) from Grinnell College took part in this

Valentine s Day, a day of expressing your love to others by chocolates and roses or a day to express
your hate to someone by planning a massacre to scare your rival? On February 14 1929, gangs
rivals Al Capone and Bugs Moran ended theirs with blood. It happened when Al Capone men went

The Saint Valentine s Massacre was a well thought out plan since no one was able to have solid
proof that it was Al Capone. In Saint Valentine s article in This Day in History it states the plan
was carried out fairly easy since both were familiar with transporting alcohol and such Bugs
Moran was expecting whiskey in his main headquarters but he was running late. When he
noticed police officers walking into the headquarters and waited outside thinking his men were
being arrested in a raid by police officers but the real reality of it once they leave will be the
turning point of mobs. What happen inside Bugs Moran s headquarters was undoubtedly one of
the most painful massacres of mobs. Moran s men also believing it was a raid did as they were
told by what they thought what the police would be lined up against a wall and then be shot to
death. The seven men were shot at least fifteen times and and it was revealed as their bodies

Appropriative Identities in Youth Culture
In Mary Bucholtz book White Kids, she discusses the stature of whiteness in the United States as
hegemonic, unmarked, and culturally absent, making it situational and unstable. Bucholtz suggests
that to counteract that, the students she studied in her field work adopted many different identities
and identifiers, such as levels of popularity and racial backgrounds, the use of language, and the
physical styles with one chooses to present.
One identifying marker the students use is slang. Linguists define slang as a youth dominated,
rapidly changing lexicon associated with casual social contexts, but a nonlinguistic view frames
slang as an illegitimate linguistic variety. The latter definition is inaccurate because these varieties
have strict grammatical rules and are only illegitimate to the uneducated eye. Furthermore, calling
slang illegitimate is disrespectful because it disregards the users of such language as inferior,
therefore rendering them powerless. This disrespect is often aimed at the African American
community, whose usage of AAVE is highly stigmatized. Slang, as a whole, is a shared youth
identity in that everyone regardless of race or social status uses it; however, much of slang is
available only to a certain group of people. Slang can be involved in processes of adequation or
distinction, making its usage contentious or socially risky depending on what person used

The eighth story of Scott s Viger is titled Josephine Labrosse. From the outside, this story seems
to incite the most positive reaction. Victor s name is seemingly aptonymic in the sense that he
provides Viger, and so the family of three generations of women, with a complete familial unit.
The scheming of sending Josephine into the city recalls No. 68 Rue Alfred de Musset, but in
this case the union between Victor and Josephine is cause for celebration, until Scott addition
troubles the ending to the tale. The singing of C est dans la vill Bytown (75) is troubling
indirectly. Once provided with the lyrics this becomes all the more apparent. The lyrics of the
song are as follows: It is in the town of Bytown/Where the English resided/Where there are three
pretty girls (137). This begins the tension initiated by the song; the three pretty girls could be a
reference to the three generations of women in Josephine Labrosse. The song continues: Who are
perfect in beauty/The youngest is my mistress/My heart charmed her (138). The fact that the
song is an accurate reiteration of the story means that Josephine is the de facto mistress in the
song. The term mistress usually comes with a negative connotation; it implies the speaker s
possession. The word charmed is also a cause for concern, because it can also be read is a

What Flaubert does for these moments is build up our expectations of what we think is going to

Some would argue that this is because women place a higher level of importance on more
personal goals, such as raising a family or achieving personal satisfaction in life. The former of
