John D. Rockefeller s Success In His Industry
I believe the power of making money is a gift of God... I believe it is my duty to go on making
money and still more money, and to dispose of the money I make for the good of my fellow man
according to the dictates of my conscience. John D. Rockefeller. Three examples that will be
listed in this paper are John s early life before his business, how he built the company and how it
affected him entirely, and the after effect on how he became successful in his industry. (Segall,
2001). John Davison Rockefeller was born on July 8, 1839, in Richford New York. He was an
Industrial tycoon and philanthropist. John was a Baptist and a farmer in his early years. He
grew up as and well mannered young man that became successful later in the years of his life.
John came from a poor family and started a small business to help his family make money. John
s first business venture was raising and selling hens and John also made money by buying candy,
then selling it to his sisters and brothers. He did extra chores such as raising turkeys on the family
s farm and selling potatoes for thirty seven and a half cents a day from his neighbors. John wanted
the community to flourish, by that he builds the world s biggest egg nest and began heading into
an oil company business (Segall, 2001).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
John began gaining control of the company and it was the head oil manufactory in the world. John
knew that running a big industry of oil will strive the community more. Rockefeller was known as
a caring individual , he made sure people were together then his business. He would go to homeless
shelters and donate money to help them. After him donating he and his associates put together a
Standard Oil Company, which gained billions of dollars and was a success. By age twenty seven,
he was on verge of bankruptcy until he met up with Vanderbilt hoping to to secure transport rates.

Origins Of The World War
Origins of the World War 1
General Theory of the War
The First World War occurred when Britain went to war with Germany in the year 1914. During
that time, the government led by the Prime Minister called Andrew Fisher pledged to completely
support Britain. Globally, the war affected Australia and other nations with a lot of enthusiasm. It
lasted for 5 years from the year 1914 to 1919. It was a battle between the allies and the central
powers. It is believed to have involved a lot of soldiers and military warfare. It is one of the
bloodiest warfare in the history of the world as far as global warfare is concerned. Military troops
were placed in trenches which was a strategy that ensured that there was tight defense (Lecture

Shifting in the balance of power in Europe can also be attributed to triggering the war. Every
country and nation wanted to prove that it was powerful and capable of defending itself. No nation
wanted to be dominated and bullied by another one which also resulted in security dilemma
(Lecture notes: August 4th, 3). Clashes due to the territory in the Balkans can also be blamed for
the eruption of the war. The alliances and treaties that were formed amongst the nations also
resulted in others participating in the war.
Nationalism
The growth and spread of nationalism throughout Europe also contributed to the start of the war;
in addition, unresolved disputes also played a major role (Lecture notes: August 18th, 5). Other
contributing factors included: the formation of alliances, threats from each other and the
perceived collapse of the balance of power throughout Europe. Convoluted and divided
governance also acted as another contributing factor to the breakout of the war. This is because
some governments were beginning to breakdown and divide which led to a weak system of
governance. Imperial as well as colonial rivalry due to wealth, power, and prestige were also
involved in the occurrence of the world war. Economic and military rivalry and clashes also led to
the eruption of this war.

industrial and military skills made the

With technology evolving consistently, the organizations have become diversified in terms of their
presence, resource allocation and several other factors. Though, the diversity has resulted in
several benefits in terms of the business, there have been situations where diversity is deemed
responsible for the failure of projects and several other pitfalls in the business. This paper illustrates
the role of diversity on the teamdynamics based on the case study which is associated with Sun

My Father is a Living Holocaust Memoir Essay
My Father is The Living Holocaust Memoir
When you hear Holocaust Survivor you think of a new beginning, a better future, victory at last.
But what happens when parents bring a child into this world and their priority is to love and
protect their baby In a better and safe place have been traumatized of the past with incredible
amount of horrifying memories and experiences? In Art Spiegelman s graphic novels, MAUS 1 and
MAUS 2, he exposes the true story of his father, Vladek, and his experience as a Jew throughout
the Holocaust through pictures and sketchy storytelling. The relationship between Art and his
father is the essential description in the book as Art has no other way to escape from being

It s obviously showed that with Vladek actions towards people we can understand why they feel
so low. Vladek throughout the story, he stresses the importance of his heart (comparing himself
of how heroic and very strong he use to be). It s good for my heart..the pedaling.. (1 12) All the
sweat, blood and tears (energy) it took to survive the Holocaust seems to build up and haunt
Vladek as present (life now). He needs to know that everyone ages and he has to accept the fact
that he s getting old and he cannot be what he once was and that s young again doing all the skillful
things he use to do.
To further exacerbate the situation, a typical father son relationship is all about bonding, trust
and understanding each other. Seemingly he s not able to do so because of the distress
overpowering his brain, he continues to be insensitive to Art. Art can t fathom Vladek and he
starts to lose hope by saying to Francois his women, I mean, I can t even make any sense out of
my relationship with my father..how am I supposed to make sense out of Auschwitz?..the
Holocaust? (MAUS 2 14) Art later on start to get the sense of hope again and make better out of
worse and asked Vladek questions of his mother Anja. Art finds out that her diaries (MAUS 1 159)
we re destroyed purposely by Vladek. Not only does Art feel hopeless because his mother is gone

Identity Theft As An Offence
Identity Theft as an offence:
Model criminal law officers committee formulated a report on identity crime. Using the term
identity crime, they included all the commencements which relate to identity theft and identity
fraud. The committee recommended the creation of the following crime model offences:
1.Dealing in identification of information
2.The holding of identification information with the intent of committing, or facilitating the
directive of, an indictable offence.
3.Possession of equipment to create identification information, in certain circumstances. in April
2008, the Standing Committee of Attorneys General had agreed to prepare a review paper

The Rhetoric Of Gaming In Academia
Academics come in all Shapes and Sizes All it took was once class period Syllabus Day, at that to
convince me that the gamified classroom was an infinitely unique, innovative, and effective
alternative to the traditional classroom said Morgan Ebbs in his article on the Benefits of Gaming
in Academia . When I saw the two words Gaming and Academia together I thoughtsurly this must
be a mistake or possibly a joke. I stood corrected. Morgan proved me wrong as the class The
Rhetoric of Gaming proved Morgan wrong. I was utterly shocked when reading this article because
It explained, what I thought to be the, impossible. The impossible was using the concept of
entertainment as a tool for learning.
Morgan expressed his bias view on the gaming community in his article. He listed off some of the
key stereo types you may think of when you envision a Gamer . Overweight, lives at home,

He says he not only became a more involved student but much more creative thinker/ writer, and a
valuable team member. Team work is crucial in the real world especially in the work place. I think
that this class equipped all the student with skills they need to be successful outside of the
classroom. This amazes me because the process was enjoyable for Morgan.
I believe this style of leaning should be more available in high school, not in college. I think this
because high school currently does not equip students for college or the real world. This type of
learning should be started at a younger age in order to prepare students for college. This article
has shown me this topic and how important it is with today s generation. Most kids goof off
throughout the four years they are in high school therefor these students are ill equipped as is. But
if we could excite the kids into learning and critically thinking, this would set the students up for

Study Of Reaction Parameters And Temperature And Mass...
The purpose of this study is to produce succinic acid from glycerol residue through anaerobic
fermentation process. The study of reaction parameters (pH, temperature and mass substrate) was
performed by using expert design software in glycerol recovery process. One factor at one time
(OFAT) method was performed as preliminary studies for selection of parameters range and
subsequently determine its optimum condition using response surface methodology (RSM). The
concentration of glyceroland succinic acid were determined using HPLC analysis. The FTIR
spectrometry was applied to examine the adsorption of organic element. Statistical optimization
(Respond Surface design Methodology) showed that optimal conditions were at pH, 2, temperature
35 0C and substrate 110.36 gram. At this optimum, 159.312 g/L was recovery of glycerol was
obtained. Succinic acid was produced via fermentationprocess by using Escherichia coli type k 12
under 19.67 g/L initial glycerol concentration, 200 rpm rotation speed and at temperature 37 0C.
The work resulted 0.66983 g/L succinic acid been produced. The study also investigated succinic
acid production from commercial glycerol and its resulted about 0.73337 g/L. Overall, this
research showed that the glycerol waste can be used as a carbon sources to produce succinic acid
via fermentationprocess by using Escherichia coli type k 12. From the fermentation process, the
succinic acid production does not exist as a major product. From this situation, the

The World Is Flat Case Study
4.The World is Flat, The Looming Challenge to U.S. Competitiveness, Restoring American
Competitiveness, Can Americans Compete?
a.Discuss the combined message) and implications of Thomas Friedman s THREE video
presentations. How did the world become flat? What does it mean for businesses and for the
expanded work force (like you and me), now that the world is hyper connected and flat? Thomas
Friedman s videos discussing how the world is flat was in relation to the economy and not the actual
geographical structure. Globalization has taken over and while we have more information at our
fingertips now more so than ever we are on a flat playing field. We are part of a never ending
global supply change which is constantly changing, and companies must learn to adapt or fall away.
The dot.com boom is what led to the globalization, and it spiraled with outsourcing and global
collaboration via the internet. Average is no longer good enough, you must be above average in
business to stay afloat and be competitive. Gone are the days of businesses only having to appeal to
their local and regional markets, they must now appeal to global markets. With the ability to
connected with each other throughout the world, globalization began to make the world flat.
Everyone is focused on the bottom dollar, outsourcing is at an all time high and you can get
information, data for free if you look hard enough which contributes to the flattening. A global
economy can become competitive with the appropriate education, investments, stable government
and infrastructure. The playing field has been leveled in thanks to the internet and globalization.
How do we survive globalization and the world being flat, Friedman provides us with advice within
his videos on how to survive globalization and be competitive. Thinking like a waitress,
entrepreneurially; you will be nice and accommodating to your customers in hopes to get a better
tip, therefore standing above the rest and having a higher income. Thinking like an immigrant,
working nonstop until you make it; immigrants come to countries with nothing and find ways to
build on what little they have and turn it into something worthwhile; be optimistic and work harder
than everyone else. Think

For about 40,000 people including women who were sexually abused by the rebel forces were
then treated by a man named Doctor Denis Mukwege, he has run funding communities for this
sexual violence act to end for the safety of his country. His main focus for his work is to treat for
those in need and to end gang rapeas a war weapon in his country. Greetings everyone, I am grateful
to have the opportunity to represent why Doctor Denis Mukwege is worthy enough to have this
Nobel Peace Prize.
As Dr. Mukwege mentions in his speech at the Roosevelt Four Freedom Ceremony, It is time to
engage men and boys, with women and girls, in the struggle to end patriarchal discrimination
and gender based abuses. It is time to draw a red line against rape as a weapon of war, as a
weapon of oppression. It is time to unite and act together for our common humanity, towards
freedom from want globally. Dr. Mukwege mentions about how rape is used as a war weapon in
his country and want the best for it to stop. This proves that Dr. Mukwege will do anything for his
country s safety and is worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Negative impacts of Dinoflagellate algae: economic, ecologic, and human health hazards
ABSTRACT Increasing pollution both atmospheric and oceanic are encouraging algal growth and
increasing the frequency and geographic range of high density dinoflagellate blooms. Public health
and economic impacts, as well as negative ecological effects of the aquatic environment are
increasing the scientific research done on toxic dinoflagellate species. Contaminated bivalves are
causing paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) and diarrhetic shellfish poisoning in humans (DSP);
with the number of cases increasing steadily in the last 40 years. Toxins released by certain species
of the phylum dinoflagellate are the cause of this spreading ... Show more content on

A general trophic routing and impact model is proposed in Fig. 1 below, (Smayda 1992).
Aquaculture has recently started to have major concern surround dinoflagellate species taking

presence of one of the thousands of species of dinoflagellates. Finfish, is an important group of
fish to coastal fishing industries who experience damage to the gills from the armored bodies of
dinoflagellate, and the spines extending down the length of their bodies. Table 1 below is a list of
all finish, bivalves, and various oceanic wildlife affected by recent increases in dinoflagellate
populations. (Anderson et al. 1993). In the following review I will cover impacts toxic
dinoflagellate species are having on oceanic organisms and the subsequent effects to aquaculture
and fishing industries, and the reasons for increasing frequencies and densities of toxic blooms.
INCREASING ALGAL BLOOMS Algaepopulation dynamics is based on growth, transportation,
predation, mortality, and dispersion. The success of an algal population depends on the gains and
losses depicted in a basic equation of population dynamics: dN/dt=(Growth+Immigration)
(Predation+Mortality+Dispersion). If the gains are higher than the losses a bloom will

that the narrator s sense of order is not the best. She also tells us, that she has dry washed her hair,

Alteration In Frankenstein
Any baker knows that when following a recipe, there are certain ingredients that can be added in
decreased or increased quantities, substituted with another ingredient, or excluded as a whole,
while still not affecting the overall outcome of the recipe. On the other hand, there are other
ingredients that must be measured precisely in order for the recipe to be successful. The
aforementioned description holds true for literary works, as well. The success of some pieces
relies heavily on a strong plot, while the success of others is found primarily from the quality of
characters and setting. To construct a successful Frankensteinstory, one must be sure to include the

In containing this theme, the tale will reveal how destructive these prejudices can be to the
individual, group, and society as a whole. These social prejudices were best showcased in Mary
Shelley s 1818 novel Frankenstein, in which the Creature was continually judged based upon his
physical appearance instead of his emotional and intellectual attributes. Not only was the Creature
judged by his father, but by other characters throughout the novel including William, the DeLacey
family, and other townsfolk. These prejudices took a heavy toll on the Creature, as seen through
his emotional responses and his sporadic actions towards other humans. All in all, these
prejudices ended up being harmful not only to the Creature, but to all whom he interacted with
due to their effect on him. This theme is so vital to maintaining the Frankenstein story that it
seemingly reoccurs in every adaptation that we covered this semester. However, out of all of
these adaptations, Philip K. Dick s 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
undoubtedly does the best job at portraying the theme of social prejudices against one particular
group. Throughout the novel, the entity of the androids was judged and looked down upon. The
prejudices against androids not only affected the androids themselves but affected Rick Deckard
as his life s work was terminating these androids, Iran as she didn t enjoy Deckard s profession, John

Caustic Culture
Unfortunately, a flare up of mass migration is a symptom of a wrackful culture that drives the
exodus. More precisely, the country of origin has been riven by destructive forces on one or more
fronts ranging from ethnicity and religion to politics and economics. In this racking environment,
the experience of the exiles has taught them that the clash of opposing factions is the path to
ruination. Anyone who has grown up in such a culture cannot help but be wary of strangers and
harbour an aversion to giving unfamiliar faces a fair shake. It matters not whether a newcomer
happens to hail from the same ethnic background or a different one. In a morbid culture where
predation and exploitation are the norm rather than the exception, strangers are not to be trusted
until proven otherwise through a guarded series of interactions over a prolonged spell which is
apt to last a couple of years or more. In this way, the standard operating procedure always includes
the overhead required to build up a modicum of trust before the participants can work together in a

Roman Civilization, Political, And Fall Of The Renaissance
Between 500 BCE and 500 CE, the Roman civilization experienced changes both politically,
economically, and socially. The collapse was a period in the fifth century AD, during which the
Roman Empire collapsed in the wake of civil war, foreign invasion from barbaric tribes, plagues
that would strike the population, economic depression that would lead to a collapse in the
economy, and poor leadership. It would result in a collapse of Roman governmental authority.
While the Roman Empiresurvived the Crisis of the Third century and recovered, it emerged from
the crisis fundamentally changed. Thus the Crisis of the Third Century was one of the major
turning points in Roman history whilst shifting old traditional ideas of Rome into a greater
progressive ideology, which would result to the collapse of the Roman Empire. One cause that
can be seen is Rome s sheer size. The problem of succession was never clear as one emperor
succeeded another every few years on average. The urban rural imbalance saw immense gaps
between the commons and the upper class that leads to economic instability. Rome was an empire
built on cities as the cities have drained off the energy of the productivity of the countryside. It was
an empire whose Roman population was less dominant, partly through its own success in co opting
other peoples. Some of the people that the Roman army had homogenized we re not actually
originally inhabitants of the empire. Particularly, this is visible in the armies, which

Epidemiology is the study of the relationships between disease and causation in human populations.
It utilizes research and scientific methods to identify risk factors and approaches to decrease disease
risk and to promote healthy habits. Community health nurses use this science to assess, diagnose,

The Effect Of Lying Had On Nervous System By Monitoring...
Introduction:
During this study we assessed the effect lying had on the autonomic nervous system by monitoring
galvanic skin response (GSR). We used GSR, a measure of the skin conductivity, as a very basic
form of polygraph test. The electronic conductivity of skin in not held constant. Instead, it changes
based on the current state of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS is comprised of the
sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system (Gazzaniga and Heatherton, 2015). The
sympathetic branch causes increases in arousal. It controls responses such as pupil dilation,
increased heart rate, and decreased digestive activity that are normally associated with the fight or
flight response (Gazzaniga and Heatherton, 2015). The parasympathetic branch acts in opposition to
the sympathetic nervous system. It lowers arousal and returns the body to normal resting conditions.
We believe that the act of lying will cause the sympathetic nervous system to increase arousal
resulting in higher skin conductivity and therefore larger changes in GSR. As a result, we
hypothesize that lying will cause a larger mean change in GSR height then telling the truth.

Antitrust Law Violation Of Antitrust Laws
Antitrust Law Violations
Introduction
This paper will discuss the Google case that was presented by Microsoft stating that Google was
in violation of antitrust laws. Also, in this paper some of the pecuniary and non pecuniary costs
will be discussed. Given in this paper will also be my thoughts on monopolies and oligopolies.
Antitrust Case
Google was investigated for antitrust behavior because they were claimed to be an internet bully
that abuses its dominance of online search and advertising (STEINHAUSER LIEDTKE, 2011, p.
1). Google was doing things like buying smaller companies in search results but then labeling
/highlighting their own services instead. Being that Google was knocking out the competition by

When dealing with market structures and considering Google as a monopoly, the characteristics of
the monopoly market structure fit. In a sense, Google is being seen as the only producer for
internet search, and is trying to make it seem through their practices that they are the only reliable
business in the industry. Because of the overwhelming market power Google is gaining through the
use of other smaller companies, other businesses such as Microsoft, are beginning to feel that the
competition being created is unfair and favored. Especially with Google blocking out their results
as the search engine is used.
Antitrust as Investopedia pointed out, prohibits a variety of practices that restrain trade, ( Antitrust
Definition | Investopedia , n.d.). According to the complaints of Microsoft, Google was in violation
of the Sherman Act of 1980. The Sherman Act states that, public is best served by free competition
in trade and industry, ( Sherman Anti Trust Act legal definition of Sherman Anti Trust Act , n.d.).
Also, the Sherman Act points out that, it prohibits monopolies attempts to monopolize, or

Ahaziah Research Paper
There are times when a person becomes ill. They tried many different remedies to assist in their
illness. A die hard worshipper of God would petition the help from the Father first then seek
medical assistance. If the Bible speaks of the many healings that God did before. I would assume
that He is capable of doing it again and again. Every situation that we encounter is a test of our
faith in the powers of God. Sometimes things may come in a sudden manner and shake the core of
our being. But with God as an enter Spirit within us He quickly brings the mine in check with His
words and His miracles.
Therefore, we have here Ahaziah, the wicked king of Israel, under God s rebukes both by his
providence and by his prophet, by his rod and by his word. He is confused by his own doing
based on his ancestors. How can we expect to prosper by doing evil in the sight of the Lord?
During this time, the stories of the past were told continuously about how God protects, heals and
provide for His chosen one. When Ahaziah rebelled against God, and revolted from his allegiance
to God. Ahaziah was punishment severe. When men break their covenants with God, and neglect
their duty, we must reflect upon our breach of covenant and try to restore ourselves. Our sins

themselves and paraded around chanting and shouting, and Elijah is just sitting their cool, calm,

Rising Tuition Prices Essay
Rising Tuition Prices The skyrocketing price of college tuition is causing a tremendous concern
over whether higher education will be a viable financial concept to the average citizen over the
next decades. Some families have opted to explore different means of obtaining a higher education
for their children as these costs escalate. There is overwhelming evidence that colleges need to
restructure the way they are run because tuition pricesare increasing at a rapid rate causing changes
in the way students fund their education and in the way the government provides educational
subsidies.
Rep. Dick Zimmer predicts that at the current rate of rising college costs, by the year 2000 the
average price tag for attending a four year public ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Reiland, 59) Unfortunately this still is quite a high rate of increase compared to the inflation rate
throughout the economy.
Almost every college insists that they are doing everything possible to slow down the rate of
increase. For most colleges, the rising costs seem so unstoppable that just keeping them down
slightly over the rate of inflation is considered an achievement in itself. Only a few institutions have
actually been successful in reducing their tuition, most notably Ohio s Muskingum College. (Elfin,
90)
The cause of the large tuition prices is elusive. Colleges are unwilling to discuss where much of this
tax free revenue is spent. (Lemann, 45) Colleges usually place the blame of the increases on
congressional budget cutters, stingy state legislatures, government regulators and parents who
demand more costly student health and recreational services. Seldom spoken of are declining
teaching loads, nonproductive research, growing financial aid programs, bloated administrative
hierarchies, celebrity salaries for professorial stars, and inflated course offerings. (Elfin, 91)
Administrators fail to see a limit on available capital, and seem to believe the cost can just be
continually handed down to students without any consequences.
Part of the problem might be a surge of income

Your Inner Fish
OVERVIEW QUESTIONS:
1. Why should we care about evolution? Why is it important?
Evolution is the building blocks to biological science. If we did not care about evolution, we would
not understand the concept of biology, or any type of science for that matter.
2. What does it mean to be human? Did your concept change after reading the book?
After reading the book, I began to understand why my body looks the way it looks. I realized that
we are all the same inside from fish to monkeys, and even some reptiles. We all started from the
same thing. In my opinion, being human can be summed up into a simple definition a unique
individual. Although we all developed from a similar place, being different makes us human. Each

Relate this pattern to his idea of exceptional similarities.
The pattern that was discovered by Sir Richard Owen in the mid 1800s resembled the skeleton of a
human arm. Owen found several mammals which exhibited the one bone two bone lotsa blobs
digits pattern . This pattern that Owen found basically indicated that the location of the bones in the
arm were similar the humerus, radius, ulna, few wrist bones, and lastly, the digits. He found that
this pattern could also be found in the human legs.
2. How did Charles Darwin s theory explain these similarities that were observed by Owen?
Charles Darwin had a theory, essentially saying that the human body s arm and a bat s wing have the
same bony attributes because they once shared a common ancestor. Darwin s theory explains the
observations that Sir Richard Owen made from the pattern he found.
3. What did further examination of Tiktaalik s fins reveal about the creature and its lifestyle?
The further examination of Tiktaalik s fins revealed that it had wrists, similar to a human body.
Tiktaalik s wrists allowed it to maneuver its way to the base of shallow bodies of water.

Of Mice And Men Prejudice Quotes
Hypocrisy is the mother of all evil and prejudice is still her favorite child. In the three stories Of
Mice and Men, Chrysanthemums, and To Kill a Mockingbird, the theme of Prejudice is uniquely
enhanced by the use of symbols. Initially in the story Chrysanthemums by John Steinbeck, there
are obvious times where unequal distribution of wealth, power and privilege between men and
women is shown. On page 1 when Elisa is working with her flowers while observing her husband
talking to two other men, it states She wore heavy leather gloves to protect her hands while she
worked. On page 4 when Elise and the tinker are in the car, it says while the man came through the

DVT can develop by lying in bed for long periods of time. Therefore, hospitalized patients have a

Rhetorical Analysis Of John Kerry s Speech
John Kerry Believes
During the 2004 Democratic National Convention, then Illinois Senator Barack Obama delivered
a truly beautiful and heartfelt keynote address to the democratic voters for the support of
democratic candidate John Kerry. His speech touched the very souls of the American people as
he introduced his speech with an anecdote of his father following the American dream from his
tiny shack in Kenya all the way to fields and oil rigs of Kansas where he would meet the women
he would eventually marry. Obama talked about how his parents believed in the tolerance of both
cultural and income differences in this country and then used parallelism, repetition, and logical
appeals to link these such beliefs to John Kerry s promises as president.
To open his keynote address, Barack Obama tells parent s story which starts from halfway across
the world and ends up in the country with endless possibilities. As he puts it, my parents shared
not only an improbable love; They shared an abiding faith in the possibility of this nation. They
would give me an African name, Barack or blessed, believing that in a tolerant America, your name
is no barrier to success. This Anecdote serves as an inspiration for the democratic voters who...

Licenses are signed for a different time periods. Licensing agreements are subject to negotiation and
they vary from company to company and from industry to industry. A major disadvantage of
licensing is the company s dependence on the local licensee to generate revenues and, thus,
royalties, usually paid as a percentage on sales volume only. Another disadvantage is the resulting
uncertainty of product quality.
Franchising Its a special form of licensing in which the franchiser makes a total marketing program
available, including the brand name, logo, products, and method of operation.
Many companies find it to their advantage to manufacture locally instead of supplying the particular
market with products made elsewhere. Numerous factors such as laws, political considerations, local
costs, tariifs and market size may affect a choice to manufacture locally, so it requires fair amount of
attention before making a final decision. The local production may be contract manufacturing,

Racial Tension In The United States
Racial tension in the United States reached a new high in the second half of the twentieth century.
Black Power movements arose as blacks realized that negotiations and peace talks for integration
could only take them so far in the fight against racism. Particularly, lacks found inspiration in
Africa, which motivated them to act more aggressively against racist thinking (Marable 105).
Furthermore, the Vietnam War added to the loss of rationale as many Americans deemed the war
unnecessary. This affected the black community in that despite the official end of segregation in the
armed forces, blacks were widely unrepresented in the higher ranks (97). The country reflected the

She notes that the Guidelines exist as a starting point and an initial benchmark rather than a

because it undermines the power of the Anti Drug Abuse Act and affirms that the discrepancy

acknowledges this specifically by revealing that the Sentencing Commission itself found the

Skinner s Theory Of Operant Conditioning Essay
Burrhus Frederic (B. F.) Skinner, an American behavioral psychologist who believed the idea that
human free will was an illusion and any human action was the result of the consequences of that
same action, developed an experiment to verify if superstition was present in pigeons. Skinner s
beliefs led him to conduct this research experiment which ultimately declared him as one of the top
psychologists of his era. Skinner believed that the best way to understand behavior was to look at
the causes of an action and its consequences. He called this approach operant conditioning. Skinner
s theory of operant conditioning was based on the work of Thorndike that he reviewed (1948).
Edward Thorndikestudied learning in animals using a puzzle box to propose the theory known as
the Law of Effect , responses that produce a satisfying effect in a situation become more likely to
occur again in that situation, and responses that produce a discomforting effect become less likely
to occur again in that situation. Skinner introduced a new term to Thorndike s theory known as
reinforcement (Skinner, 1948). Reinforcement is a stimulus (as a reward or the removal of an
electric shock) that increases the probability of a desired response in operant conditioning by being
applied or affected following the desired response. Skinner branched off Thorndike s approach
studied operant conditioning by experimenting on animals using conditioning chambers also known
as a Skinner box and in 1948

The Movie Wit Exemplifies How Vulnerable Patients During...
The movie Wit exemplifies how vulnerable patients in an outpatient and hospital setting can often

diagnosed with stage four metastatic ovarian cancer. Her doctor, Dr. Kelekian has explained to her
that the best choice of treatment would be experimental chemotherapy. He offered her no
alternatives or second opinions and made the decision right then and there that she should do the
experimental study because it was the strongest treatment they could offer her. The main

acted towards Vivian was unjust and he was very much in the wrong in countless situations. The
movie Wit displays many ethical issues and dilemmas that often happen in healthcare, the physician
and resident acted in many ways that were morally wrong.
When looking at this dilemma through multifaceted lens I see many different sides that on can
pick. I think the issue is tough but there is a clear picture in my head that the physician had made
the decision to advise Vivian to do this experimental treatment for his own personal gain. I do not
believe that Jason or Dr. Kelekian were thinking of the best interest of their patient. The physician
s role allowed him to have much to gain in terms of research but he did not have any person gain

Cooperation In The Godhead Research Paper
Cooperation in the Godhead
Based on our previous lecture we discussed about the Godhead it brought an understanding of how
the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit cooperate. The Godhead demonstrates God s intra relationship by
expressing how the persons of the Godhead relate to each other, within the unity of being one
indivisible God. The purpose of this paper is to not only gather an understanding of the Trinitarian
theology, which is a Christ centered way of understanding who God is; however, it is to introduce
lessons through scripture reading so students can learn from seeing the Godhead as a pattern for
our lives.
In lecture 3 we discussed how the Father, son, and holy spirit cooperate in redemption and salvation,
therefore identifying the distinction instead of separation. In Matthew 3:16 17, scripture quoted:

was carried out fairly easy since both were familiar with transporting alcohol and such Bugs
Moran was expecting whiskey in his main headquarters but he was running late. When he
noticed police officers walking into the headquarters and waited outside thinking his men were

Analysis Of White Kids

Appropriative Identities in Youth Culture
In Mary Bucholtz book White Kids, she discusses the stature of whiteness in the United States as
hegemonic, unmarked, and culturally absent, making it situational and unstable. Bucholtz suggests
that to counteract that, the students she studied in her field work adopted many different identities
and identifiers, such as levels of popularity and racial backgrounds, the use of language, and the
physical styles with one chooses to present.
One identifying marker the students use is slang. Linguists define slang as a youth dominated,
rapidly changing lexicon associated with casual social contexts, but a nonlinguistic view frames
slang as an illegitimate linguistic variety. The latter definition is inaccurate because these varieties
have strict grammatical rules and are only illegitimate to the uneducated eye. Furthermore, calling
slang illegitimate is disrespectful because it disregards the users of such language as inferior,
therefore rendering them powerless. This disrespect is often aimed at the African American
community, whose usage of AAVE is highly stigmatized. Slang, as a whole, is a shared youth
identity in that everyone regardless of race or social status uses it; however, much of slang is
available only to a certain group of people. Slang can be involved in processes of adequation or
distinction, making its usage contentious or socially risky depending on what person used

Chillie Labrosse Analysis
The eighth story of Scott s Viger is titled Josephine Labrosse. From the outside, this story seems
to incite the most positive reaction. Victor s name is seemingly aptonymic in the sense that he
provides Viger, and so the family of three generations of women, with a complete familial unit.
The scheming of sending Josephine into the city recalls No. 68 Rue Alfred de Musset, but in
this case the union between Victor and Josephine is cause for celebration, until Scott addition
troubles the ending to the tale. The singing of C est dans la vill Bytown (75) is troubling
indirectly. Once provided with the lyrics this becomes all the more apparent. The lyrics of the
song are as follows: It is in the town of Bytown/Where the English resided/Where there are three
pretty girls (137). This begins the tension initiated by the song; the three pretty girls could be a
reference to the three generations of women in Josephine Labrosse. The song continues: Who are
perfect in beauty/The youngest is my mistress/My heart charmed her (138). The fact that the
song is an accurate reiteration of the story means that Josephine is the de facto mistress in the
song. The term mistress usually comes with a negative connotation; it implies the speaker s
possession. The word charmed is also a cause for concern, because it can also be read is a
troubling lens. Even more, where did this chorus (75) appear from? The fact that this illusory
chorus was prepared to sing the troubling song is

Analysis Of Flaubert s Madame Bovary
In Madame Bovary, Flaubert writes a couple of major moments in very brief and plain ways.
What Flaubert does for these moments is build up our expectations of what we think is going to
happen long before it actually occurs so that when the moment nears, he can make the current
buildup and the moment itself quick and plain. This is so that we are emotionally detached
from it and the character s experience and ours do not mix. One passage where this happens is
near the beginning of part 3, on page 208, where Emma is having a conversation with Leon. The
passage is With a slight shrug, Emma interrupted him to lament the illness during which she had
nearly died; what a shame! she would no longer be suffering now. Leon immediately envied the
tranquillity of the grave, and one night he had even written his will, requesting that he be buried
in that beautiful coverlet, with its bands of velvet, that she had given him; for this was the way
they would have liked to be they were both creating for themselves an ideal against which they
were not adjusting their past lives. Besides. speech is a rolling press that always amplifies one s
emotions. But at this invention concerning the coverlet: Why? she asked. Why? . He hesitated.
Because I loved you so much! And, applauding himself for having gotten past the difficult part,
Leon watched her expression from the corner of his eye. Leon s confession is heavily set up by the

copyrightexpiration, thus preventing its most iconic character from entering the public domain.
This holds pressing significance because lobbying for further extension legislation would likely
occur within the next few years. The duration of copyright determines the length of protection.
Limitations on this length exist to ensure works enter the public domain. Therefore, the length of
protection is one of the most relevant and debated issues regarding copyright law. The proponents
and opponents of copyright term extension make compelling arguments, but both sides agree that
copyright law should encourage creativity and innovation. If Disney is successful in once again
lobbying for an extension of duration, a substantial number of works will fail to enter the public
domain in a timely manner. This will, consequently, lead to a stifling of creativity and a suppression
of innovation that could be detrimental to progress in the realms of science and the useful arts.
Argument

The Heroes Of Beowulf And Malcolm X
Not every hero wears a cape or tights, nor do they all have superpowers. Being a hero does not
mean you have to be a crime fighter or a warrior. Heroism comes with the good that you do, and
helping people and wanting better for people are makes heroes. Heroism can range from big to
small; a hero can makes someone s day, or he or she can even make history. Heroes can be local or
worldwide. A hero could even be someone an individual looks up to as a role model. Heroes do
not have to be well known by everyone to be a hero. They could just be helping their community.
Not every hero is the same, and people may not agree on who is and who is not a hero. Heroes are
what an individual makes them to be. Although Beowulf and Malcolm Xare people of different time
eras, both men demonstrate a variety of characteristics of a hero.
Starting as a warrior and later becoming the king, Beowulf left behind a legacy. Beowulf
portrays many traits of a hero. According to the Beowulf History Channel documentary, implies
that he was a superhuman (History Doc.). Beowulf was known as the strongest of the Geats
(Beowulf 195). According to the epic Beowulf, Beowulf was stronger than anyone anywhere
(194). He was like no other anywhere else. Beowulf was not scared of battle, and felt like the best
way to die was in battle.Beowulf was fearless. He voluntarily put himself in danger in order to
protect his people and friends. Beowulf sailed across the sea to Denmark in friendship to

Sociology of the Body Pierre Bourdieu coins the term habitus to explain the role of the body in class
reproductive dynamics. Summarize his position Introduction Pierre Bourdieu s account of class
reproductive dynamics stems from his belief that your habitus dictates how your body engages in
the reproductive dynamics of class theory. This notion of habitus has become central to the studies
on social inequality. Bourdieu and Structuralism Bourdieu is a typical example of a structuralist.
Structuralism is concerned with macro theories and the functionalist school of thought along with
conflict theories, which were illustrated by Durkheim and Marx, respectively. Structure confines the
person to a certain area, and restrains them to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In other words, the habitus enables sociologists, more or less, to resolve the troublesome dichotomy
between subject/object and structure/agency. The habitus is rooted in the body and exists through
the practice of actors and their interactions with each other and their environment. It does not
comprise manifestations of social behaviour but is integral to that behaviour and a combination of
the personal and the systemic (Jenkins 1992: 74) (Butler Robson, 2003, p 37) The power of habitus
derives from the thoughtlessness of habit and habituation, rather than consciously learned rules and
principles (Jenkins, 1992, p76) Reproduction Theory The reproduction theory, started by the left
Neo Marxist phase in the 60 s concentrates on the concept of ideology and the nature of capitalism
and the state apparatus The ideology of capitalism is what holds together the exploitative system of
social inequality. Schools are perpetuated by capitalism, which leads to a meritocracy society. All of
these class structures and inequalities are produced by institutional systems like education, religion
and family. These internal workings of such institutions send the tacit message that people are in the
place they deserve in society. This can be compared to the far right, chain of thought Thatcherism,
being one.

Allure Of Democracy
The Allure of Democracy
A democratic system is one that states strive for, as it allows for popular participation through the
electoral process; and depending on implementation tactics, states may or may not be successful in
this pursuit. Democracy looks different across nations, as exemplified with presidential,
parliamentary and mixed systems being put in place. However, what is the allure of democracy?
Herein, differences in executive leadership and duties and differences in powers are addressed in
order to better understand what democracy is and why it is a sought after system of governance.
Democracy is based on two fundamental concepts. The first of which is political participation,
which requires all citizens eligible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are, however, often times more stable systems. Paradoxically, the executive branch, some
would argue, is not sovereign the citizen is. This is because the president, as well as legislators,
have a responsibility to uphold the wants of the people. This is often debated, though. A major
player falling under this system is the United States. In the U.S. presidential system, voting for both
the legislative branch and the presidential seat are voted on simultaneously (rather than a
legislative branch being voted in, who then vote in the president as seen in parliament elections),
and only two political parties stand out amongst the rest. There is no split government, and no
such thing as a vote of confidence, meaning it is much harder to remove a presidential figure (they
must be impeached). Political parties don t get to choose the president (they choose a candidate to
run), and though the president seeks to establish a cooperative relationship across parties it isn t
essential to his/her stay in office (Dahl, n.d.) (Moe Caldwell, 1994).

John Maynard Keynes Essay examples
John Maynard Keynes
John Maynard Keynes was born in 1883 which means he lived around the same time period as
the seven creative individuals which Howard Gardner chose to focus on in his book Creating
Minds. I chose to look at the life of Maynard Keynes because it is such a fascinating and diverse
one. While entailing some of the same features found in the lives of those Gardner focused on,
Maynard s life includes a lot of differences and adds some interesting twists as well. It can only be
beneficial and interesting to see how this creative individual fits into Gardner s model. Keynes was
one of the most influential economists of the twentieth century, and one of only a handful of social
scientists who, through their writings, have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through her willingness to depart from the traditional, she was one of the earliest influence on
Keynes. She broke out of the traditional role placed on women during that period, thereby setting
an example for Maynard who was very close to his mother.
Now we must take into the account the Keynes colorful and distinguished ancestry. The early
Keynes were people of high standing whose influence can still be seen in the names of places in
England such as Horstead Keynes. Both the maternal and paternal side of Keynes ancestors were
non conformists who remained steadfast Roman Catholics during a time of religious persecution.
Maynard studied his ancestry extensivly and was very proud of it. As a student he drew up a
family tree, and in later years wrote an introduction to one of his books based on it.
The Pride of ancestry has in great measure passed away, for the fast rising wave of democracy
day by day obliterates the old land marks and traditions that were once held dear. Some, however,
I trust there are, to whom the great names of the past remain in living memory, who shape their
course in the world under a deep sense of responsibility of bearing them; and fill their appointed
position and do their appointed work commanded by the gaze of all their ancestors. (Hession 363)
Some speculate that this was an introduction to an autobiography Keynes was writing at the time of
his death. This passage shows how noteworthy his ancestry was to Maynard and how it provided

Argumentative Essay About Women
In recent times, the word feminist and all of its many ramifications have become increasingly
more troubling. In the pure, untainted form of the word, a feminist is someone who actively
supports the advocacy of women s rights on the basis of equality of the sexes. This means
believing in the treatment of women as equals to men, both intellectually and socially. However,
in contemporary culture, it would seem that if you are a feminist, then you must be a feminazi. If
you are not, then you must hate women. Regardless of which side of battle one chooses to take
up arms for, or if one decides to take no side at all, he or she cannot escape the integral question:
why, in this day and age, are men still outperforming women in the professional... Show more
content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some would argue that this is because women place a higher level of importance on more
personal goals, such as raising a family or achieving personal satisfaction in life. The former of
these goals can wreak havoc on a woman s career. Certainly, childbirth plays a role, knocking
ambitious women off their professional stride for months (if not years) at a time while their
male peers face no such catastrophic derailment (Dorment 698). Nevertheless many women have
successfully borne children and returned to work to climb the ranks of the professional ladder.
As for the latter of these more personal goals, satisfaction in life will almost invariably mean
different things to different people, male or female. Men may obtain more satisfaction from a
demanding career while for women it may be spending more time with family and friends. Or
vice versa. Regardless of where the individual s personal satisfaction comes from, this is an
important life pursuit. As long as a person is satisfied in the life he or she leads, it should not
matter whether or not the individual, man or woman, holds a high powered professional position.
Another proposed reason for the ambition gap is the biological differences between men and
women. It is indeed possible that men are more assertive and women more nurturing due to
genetics. However, in today s world, where we no longer have to hunt in the wild for our food, our
desire for

During that time, the government led by the Prime Minister called Andrew Fisher pledged to completely support Britain. Globally, the war affected Australia and other nations with a lot of enthusiasm. It lasted for 5 years from the year 1914 to 1919. It was a battle between the allies and the central powers. It is believed to have involved a lot of soldiers and military warfare. Shifting in the balance of power in Europe can also be attributed to triggering the war. Every country and nation wanted to prove that it was powerful and capable of defending itself. No nation wanted to be dominated and bullied by another one which also resulted in security dilemma (Lecture notes: August 4th, 3). Clashes due to the territory in the Balkans can also be blamed for the eruption of the war. The alliances and treaties that were formed amongst the nations also resulted in others participating in the war. Nationalism The growth and spread of nationalism throughout Europe also contributed to the start of the war; in addition, unresolved disputes also played a major role (Lecture notes: August 18th, 5). Other contributing factors included: the formation of alliances, threats from each other and the perceived collapse of the balance of power throughout Europe. Convoluted and divided governance also acted as another contributing factor to the breakout of the war. This is because some governments were beginning to breakdown and divide which led to a weak system of governance. Imperial as well as colonial rivalry due to wealth, power, and prestige were also involved in the occurrence of the world war. Economic and military rivalry and clashes also led to the eruption of this war. Thomas Friedman s videos discussing how the world is flat was in relation to the economy and not the actual geographical structure. Globalization has taken over and while we have more information at our fingertips now more so than ever we are on a flat playing field. We are part of a never ending global supply change which is constantly changing, and companies must learn to adapt or fall away. The dot.com boom is what led to the globalization, and it spiraled with outsourcing and global collaboration via the internet. Average is no longer good enough, you must be above average in business to stay afloat and be competitive. Gone are the days of businesses only having to appeal to their local and regional markets, they must now appeal to global markets. With the ability to connected with each other throughout the world, globalization began to make the world flat. Everyone is focused on the bottom dollar, outsourcing is at an all time high and you can get information, data for free if you look hard enough which contributes to the flattening. In containing this theme, the tale will reveal how destructive these prejudices can be to the individual, group, and society as a whole. These social prejudices were best showcased in Mary Shelley s 1818 novel Frankenstein, in which the Creature was continually judged based upon his physical appearance instead of his emotional and intellectual attributes. Not only was the Creature judged by his father, but by other characters throughout the novel including William, the DeLacey family, and other townsfolk. These prejudices took a heavy toll on the Creature, as seen through his emotional responses and his sporadic actions towards other humans. All in all, these prejudices ended up being harmful not only to the Creature, but to all whom he interacted with due to their effect on him. This theme is so vital to maintaining the Frankenstein story that it seemingly reoccurs in every adaptation that we covered this semester. However, out of all of these adaptations, Philip K. Dick s 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? undoubtedly does the best job at portraying the theme of social prejudices against one particular group. The collapse was a period in the fifth century AD, during which the Roman Empire collapsed in the wake of civil war, foreign invasion from barbaric tribes, plagues that would strike the population, economic depression that would lead to a collapse in the economy, and poor leadership. It would result in a collapse of Roman governmental authority. While the Roman Empiresurvived the Crisis of the Third century and recovered, it emerged from the crisis fundamentally changed. Thus the Crisis of the Third Century was one of the major turning points in Roman history whilst shifting old traditional ideas of Rome into a greater progressive ideology, which would result to the collapse of the Roman Empire. One cause that can be seen is Rome s sheer size. The problem of succession was never clear as one emperor succeeded another every few years on average. The urban rural imbalance saw immense gaps between the commons and the upper class that leads to economic instability. Rome was an empire built on cities as the cities have drained off the energy of the productivity of the countryside. • 20. The Effect Of Lying Had On Nervous System By Monitoring... Introduction: During this study we assessed the effect lying had on the autonomic nervous system by monitoring galvanic skin response (GSR). We used GSR, a measure of the skin conductivity, as a very basic form of polygraph test. The electronic conductivity of skin in not held constant. Instead, it changes based on the current state of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS is comprised of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system (Gazzaniga and Heatherton, 2015). The sympathetic branch causes increases in arousal. It controls responses such as pupil dilation, increased heart rate, and decreased digestive activity that are normally associated with the fight or flight response (Gazzaniga and Heatherton, 2015). The parasympathetic branch acts in opposition to the sympathetic nervous system. It lowers arousal and returns the body to normal resting conditions. We believe that the act of lying will cause the sympathetic nervous system to increase arousal resulting in higher skin conductivity and therefore larger changes in GSR. As a result, we hypothesize that lying will cause a larger mean change in GSR height then telling the truth. A die hard worshipper of God would petition the help from the Father first then seek medical assistance. If the Bible speaks of the many healings that God did before. I would assume that He is capable of doing it again and again. Every situation that we encounter is a test of our faith in the powers of God. Sometimes things may come in a sudden manner and shake the core of our being. But with God as an enter Spirit within us He quickly brings the mine in check with His words and His miracles. Therefore, we have here Ahaziah, the wicked king of Israel, under God s rebukes both by his providence and by his prophet, by his rod and by his word. He is confused by his own doing based on his ancestors. How can we expect to prosper by doing evil in the sight of the Lord? During this time, the stories of the past were told continuously about how God protects, heals and provide for His chosen one. When Ahaziah rebelled against God, and revolted from his allegiance to God. Ahaziah was punishment severe. Rising Tuition Prices Essay Rising Tuition Prices The skyrocketing price of college tuition is causing a tremendous concern over whether higher education will be a viable financial concept to the average citizen over the next decades. Some families have opted to explore different means of obtaining a higher education for their children as these costs escalate. There is overwhelming evidence that colleges need to restructure the way they are run because tuition pricesare increasing at a rapid rate causing changes in the way students fund their education and in the way the government provides educational subsidies. (Reiland, 59) Unfortunately this still is quite a high rate of increase compared to the inflation rate throughout the economy. Almost every college insists that they are doing everything possible to slow down the rate of increase. For most colleges, the rising costs seem so unstoppable that just keeping them down slightly over the rate of inflation is considered an achievement in itself. Only a few institutions have actually been successful in reducing their tuition, most notably Ohio s Muskingum College. (Elfin, 90) The cause of the large tuition prices is elusive. Colleges are unwilling to discuss where much of this tax free revenue is spent. (Lemann, 45) Colleges usually place the blame of the increases on congressional budget cutters, stingy state legislatures, government regulators and parents who demand more costly student health and recreational services. Seldom spoken of are declining teaching loads, nonproductive research, growing financial aid programs, bloated administrative hierarchies, celebrity salaries for professorial stars, and inflated course offerings. Skinner, an American behavioral psychologist who believed the idea that human free will was an illusion and any human action was the result of the consequences of that same action, developed an experiment to verify if superstition was present in pigeons. Skinner s beliefs led him to conduct this research experiment which ultimately declared him as one of the top psychologists of his era. Skinner believed that the best way to understand behavior was to look at the causes of an action and its consequences. He called this approach operant conditioning. Skinner s theory of operant conditioning was based on the work of Thorndike that he reviewed (1948). Edward Thorndikestudied learning in animals using a puzzle box to propose the theory known as the Law of Effect , responses that produce a satisfying effect in a situation become more likely to occur again in that situation, and responses that produce a discomforting effect become less likely to occur again in that situation. Skinner introduced a new term to Thorndike s theory known as reinforcement (Skinner, 1948). Reinforcement is a stimulus (as a reward or the removal of an electric shock) that increases the probability of a desired response in operant conditioning by being applied or affected following the desired response. Analysis Of White Kids Sadie Mazur Anthro 105 Rosa November 21, 2014 Appropriative Identities in Youth Culture In Mary Bucholtz book White Kids, she discusses the stature of whiteness in the United States as hegemonic, unmarked, and culturally absent, making it situational and unstable. Bucholtz suggests that to counteract that, the students she studied in her field work adopted many different identities and identifiers, such as levels of popularity and racial backgrounds, the use of language, and the physical styles with one chooses to present. One identifying marker the students use is slang. Linguists define slang as a youth dominated, rapidly changing lexicon associated with casual social contexts, but a nonlinguistic view frames slang as an illegitimate linguistic variety. The latter definition is inaccurate because these varieties have strict grammatical rules and are only illegitimate to the uneducated eye. Furthermore, calling slang illegitimate is disrespectful because it disregards the users of such language as inferior, therefore rendering them powerless. This disrespect is often aimed at the African American community, whose usage of AAVE is highly stigmatized. Slang, as a whole, is a shared youth identity in that everyone regardless of race or social status uses it; however, much of slang is available only to a certain group of people. What Flaubert does for these moments is build up our expectations of what we think is going to happen long before it actually occurs so that when the moment nears, he can make the current buildup and the moment itself quick and plain. This is so that we are emotionally detached from it and the character s experience and ours do not mix. One passage where this happens is near the beginning of part 3, on page 208, where Emma is having a conversation with Leon. • 41. Copyright Law Should Encourage Creativity And Innovation... Introduction Longer copyright terms can prove beneficial for large mass media companies as evidenced by The Walt Disney Company s lobbying for the Copyright Term Extension Act. This act, often dubbed the Mickey Mouse Protection Act, extended copyright protection for an additional twenty years in 1998. Consequently, Mickey Mouseis now set to enter the public domainon January 1, 2024. Disney will once again have the opportunity to lobby for extension and evade Mickey s copyrightexpiration, thus preventing its most iconic character from entering the public domain. This holds pressing significance because lobbying for further extension legislation would likely occur within the next few years. The duration of copyright determines the length of protection. Limitations on this length exist to ensure works enter the public domain. Therefore, the length of protection is one of the most relevant and debated issues regarding copyright law. The proponents and opponents of copyright term extension make compelling arguments, but both sides agree that copyright law should encourage creativity and innovation. If Disney is successful in once again lobbying for an extension of duration, a substantial number of works will fail to enter the public domain in a timely manner. Not every hero is the same, and people may not agree on who is and who is not a hero. Heroes are what an individual makes them to be. Although Beowulf and Malcolm Xare people of different time eras, both men demonstrate a variety of characteristics of a hero. Starting as a warrior and later becoming the king, Beowulf left behind a legacy. Beowulf portrays many traits of a hero. According to the Beowulf History Channel documentary, implies that he was a superhuman (History Doc.). Beowulf was known as the strongest of the Geats (Beowulf 195). According to the epic Beowulf, Beowulf was stronger than anyone anywhere (194). He was like no other anywhere else. Beowulf was not scared of battle, and felt like the best way to die was in battle.Beowulf was fearless. He voluntarily put himself in danger in order to protect his people and friends. • 43. Pierre Bourdieu Coins the Term †Habitus’ to Explain the... Sociology of the Body Pierre Bourdieu coins the term habitus to explain the role of the body in class reproductive dynamics. Summarize his position Introduction Pierre Bourdieu s account of class reproductive dynamics stems from his belief that your habitus dictates how your body engages in the reproductive dynamics of class theory. This notion of habitus has become central to the studies on social inequality. Bourdieu and Structuralism Bourdieu is a typical example of a structuralist. Structuralism is concerned with macro theories and the functionalist school of thought along with conflict theories, which were illustrated by Durkheim and Marx, respectively. Structure confines the person to a certain area, and restrains them to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In other words, the habitus enables sociologists, more or less, to resolve the troublesome dichotomy between subject/object and structure/agency. The habitus is rooted in the body and exists through the practice of actors and their interactions with each other and their environment. It does not comprise manifestations of social behaviour but is integral to that behaviour and a combination of the personal and the systemic (Jenkins 1992: 74) (Butler Robson, 2003, p 37) The power of habitus derives from the thoughtlessness of habit and habituation, rather than consciously learned rules and principles (Jenkins, 1992, p76) Reproduction Theory The reproduction theory, started by the left Neo Marxist phase in the 60 s concentrates on the concept of ideology and the nature of capitalism and the state apparatus The ideology of capitalism is what holds together the exploitative system of social inequality. Schools are perpetuated by capitalism, which leads to a meritocracy society. All of these class structures and inequalities are produced by institutional systems like education, religion and family. These internal workings of such institutions send the tacit message that people are in the place they deserve in society. This can be compared to the far right, chain of thought Thatcherism, being one. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Allure Of Democracy The Allure of Democracy A democratic system is one that states strive for, as it allows for popular participation through the electoral process; and depending on implementation tactics, states may or may not be successful in this pursuit. Democracy looks different across nations, as exemplified with presidential, parliamentary and mixed systems being put in place. However, what is the allure of democracy? Herein, differences in executive leadership and duties and differences in powers are addressed in order to better understand what democracy is and why it is a sought after system of governance. Democracy is based on two fundamental concepts. The first of which is political participation, which requires all citizens eligible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They are, however, often times more stable systems. Paradoxically, the executive branch, some would argue, is not sovereign the citizen is. This is because the president, as well as legislators, have a responsibility to uphold the wants of the people. This is often debated, though. A major player falling under this system is the United States. In the U.S. presidential system, voting for both the legislative branch and the presidential seat are voted on simultaneously (rather than a legislative branch being voted in, who then vote in the president as seen in parliament elections), and only two political parties stand out amongst the rest. There is no split government, and no such thing as a vote of confidence, meaning it is much harder to remove a presidential figure (they must be impeached). Political parties don t get to choose the president (they choose a candidate to run), and though the president seeks to establish a cooperative relationship across parties it isn t essential to his/her stay in office (Dahl, n.d.) (Moe Caldwell, 1994). Mixed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. John Maynard Keynes Essay examples John Maynard Keynes John Maynard Keynes was born in 1883 which means he lived around the same time period as the seven creative individuals which Howard Gardner chose to focus on in his book Creating Minds. I chose to look at the life of Maynard Keynes because it is such a fascinating and diverse one. While entailing some of the same features found in the lives of those Gardner focused on, Maynard s life includes a lot of differences and adds some interesting twists as well. It can only be beneficial and interesting to see how this creative individual fits into Gardner s model. Keynes was one of the most influential economists of the twentieth century, and one of only a handful of social scientists who, through their writings, have ... She broke out of the traditional role placed on women during that period, thereby setting an example for Maynard who was very close to his mother. Now we must take into the account the Keynes colorful and distinguished ancestry. The early Keynes were people of high standing whose influence can still be seen in the names of places in England such as Horstead Keynes. Both the maternal and paternal side of Keynes ancestors were non conformists who remained steadfast Roman Catholics during a time of religious persecution. Maynard studied his ancestry extensivly and was very proud of it. As a student he drew up a family tree, and in later years wrote an introduction to one of his books based on it. The Pride of ancestry has in great measure passed away, for the fast rising wave of democracy day by day obliterates the old land marks and traditions that were once held dear. Some, however, I trust there are, to whom the great names of the past remain in living memory, who shape their course in the world under a deep sense of responsibility of bearing them; and fill their appointed position and do their appointed work commanded by the gaze of all their ancestors. (Hession 363) Some speculate that this was an introduction to an autobiography Keynes was writing at the time of his death. This passage shows how noteworthy his ancestry was to Maynard and how it provided ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Argumentative Essay About Women In recent times, the word feminist and all of its many ramifications have become increasingly more troubling. In the pure, untainted form of the word, a feminist is someone who actively supports the advocacy of women s rights on the basis of equality of the sexes. This means believing in the treatment of women as equals to men, both intellectually and socially. However, in contemporary culture, it would seem that if you are a feminist, then you must be a feminazi. If you are not, then you must hate women. Regardless of which side of battle one chooses to take up arms for, or if one decides to take no side at all, he or she cannot escape the integral question: why, in this day and age, are men still outperforming women in the professional... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some would argue that this is because women place a higher level of importance on more personal goals, such as raising a family or achieving personal satisfaction in life. The former of these goals can wreak havoc on a woman s career. Certainly, childbirth plays a role, knocking ambitious women off their professional stride for months (if not years) at a time while their male peers face no such catastrophic derailment (Dorment 698). Nevertheless many women have successfully borne children and returned to work to climb the ranks of the professional ladder. As for the latter of these more personal goals, satisfaction in life will almost invariably mean different things to different people, male or female. Men may obtain more satisfaction from a demanding career while for women it may be spending more time with family and friends. Or vice versa. Regardless of where the individual s personal satisfaction comes from, this is an important life pursuit. As long as a person is satisfied in the life he or she leads, it should not matter whether or not the individual, man or woman, holds a high powered professional position. Another proposed reason for the ambition gap is the biological differences between men and women. It is indeed possible that men are more assertive and women more nurturing due to genetics. However, in today s world, where we no longer have to hunt in the wild for our food, our desire for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
