The Death Of The Dog Essay
~Glisten~ Great, how am I gonna get out of this mess? I m going to jail for this! All these horrifying
things were running through my head. I kept poking my head up to see if anybody was there, but no
one was ever there and I m afraid if I get up someone will see me. I was about to get up when I heard
a random growl right next to me. Please don t tell what I think it is? I nervously gulp in a lump in my
throat and turned around to be face to face to an protective dog. All of a sudden it started to bark very
loudly, I was trying to shush the dog so I wouldn t get caught. God, please be quite. I shush the dog
more but it kept on barking. MISSY BE QUITE! I heard the same voice hissed at the dog. The dog
became quite, I put my hand on chest trying to get my heart rate back to a normal pace. I was about to
get up when the dog started to bark again. What the I got interrupted by loud high pitch voice again.
MISSY WHAT IS ALL THAT NOISE! All of the sudden I heard footsteps coming in the living room.
Missy come hear. I heard the owner calm for the dog but the dog ignored the owner call and kept on
barking. The owner sighed out in frustration and walk towards the couch to go get the dog. Oh shi I m
creamed! I started to panic in my head Missy what in the The owner turns over towards me, but
luckily she didn t see me or I thinking she didn t see me. Come on Missy I need to make a phone call.
The owner gently pulled the dog over in the kitchen

Examples Of Rhetorics In Fast Food Nation
When using rhetoric tenets, writers can create arguments that are very effective or ineffective at
persuading an audience. This is seen in Eric Schlosser s book Fast Food Nation in which he uses the
three rhetoric tenets to better assure his claim of fast food but also use the rhetoric tenets ineffectively
in an argument. By using these rhetorical ideas, his writing is very persuasive at points but also left
unsuccessful at other times. The use of ethos in Fast Food Nation is seen many times to help Schlosser
appeal as credible and trustworthy while ensuring that he knows what he is talking about which adds
persuasive flow to the argument. One use of effective ethos is when Schlosser talks about the
McDonald s Corporation taking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This takes away from the main impact of the claims and doesn t help to strengthen his argument. His
use of ethos strengthens his arguments throughout times in the book but some of the research makes
his claims longer and harder to follow which takes away from the main argument he is trying to
portray. Schlosser s use of logos is also seen in a variety of ways in the book. During the argument
about advertisements and corporate sponsors for school materials in school districts, he states, A 1998
study of these teaching materials by the Consumers Union found that 80 percent were biased,
providing students with incomplete or slanted information that favored the sponsor s products and
views (55). Schlosser s use of logos is effective because the facts and statistics giving an
overwhelming factor on how biased fast food corporations are towards the youth, even when giving
them school supplies. Schlosser uses this example because it shows that fast food corporations want to
persuade children at a young age, which adds sympathy for the youth and hatred towards the big fast
food chains. However, there are times when Schlosser s use of logos does not completely help the
argument. When talking about sanitation crews at meat packing plants, Schlosser looks to build an
argument on how sanitation jobs are unsafe for the workers. He states, Although official statistics are
not kept, the death rate among slaughterhouse sanitation crews is extraordinarily high

Programming Bacteria To Sense Pressure Case Study
Programming bacteria to sense pressure
Neydis Moreno and Megan N. McClean
Pattern generating circuits coupled to production of organic material with inorganic interfaces allow
bacterial colonies to generate composite structures with unique function.
Mother Nature generates sophisticated and complicated structures from the humblest of ingredients.
Often their construction relies on the self assembly of building blocks resulting in hybrid structures
that combine both organic and inorganic materials. For example, Shewanella bacteria are capable of
forming extracellular networks of arsenic sulfide nanotubes with unique electrical and
photoconductive properties1. Our ability to mimic these natural processes to create desirable nano and

Cao, et al2 take advantage of an existing circuit capable of generating spatial patterning in two
dimensional populations of bacteria6 to pattern production of a modified curli protein in colonies of E.
coli. Curli is an extracellular amyloid material produced by E. coli that forms fibrils based on self
assembly of the major secreted curli subunit (CsgA) and an additional subunit CsgB. The authors
utilize the circuit described in Payne, et al (which consists of a positive feedback loop (mutant T7
RNA polymerase T7RNAP activates its own expression) and a negative feedback loop based on
production of a diffusible quorum sensing molecule AHL (see Figure 1). . Expression of the curli
protein occurs at high levels of the quorum sensing molecule AHL. By engineering curli to contain a
polyhistidine tag (6XHis) it can be interfaced with inorganic materials, for example, gold
nanoparticles conjugated to Ni Nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA).
Cao et al use ink jet printing to print cells onto membranes to form single colonies of E. coli
containing this synthetic curli producing circuit. They found that the spatial patterning circuit caused
curli to be expressed in the exterior of the colony, forming domed curli structures. In contrast, cells
constitutively expressing curli without the patterning

Preschool Developmental Observation
To complete my Preschool Atypical observation I went to Bruceton Elementary School. While there I
observed a 3 year old boy named Tucker who was diagnosed with High Functioning Autism. Tucker is
a little boy who was born and raised in Preston County, West Virginia and is attending the Preschool
offered at Bruceton Elementary for half a day. He is an only child who speaks only English, both
Tucker s parents are local and have been part of the Bruceton communities for years. I observed
Tucker from 7:30 in the morning till his lunch at 11:30 while he participated in multiple activities
showing off his development in all 5 major areas.
Throughout the day I saw Tucker performing an array of tasks challenging his fine motor skills, which
seemed to delayed compared to the other children. This could be a combination of Tucker s diagnosis
as well as him age compared to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From what I observed inside I got most of my information from dance time before he left for lunch.
Tucker seems to really enjoy the songs and videos during dance time but is much less interested in the
actual activity of dancing. While the kids around him danced and mimicked the dance moves on the
screen Tucker would hop occasionally with both feet and stand still in his spot on the rug. Throughout
the day I observed Tucker demonstrating the milestone for children ages 2 3 such as running forward,
jumping with both feet, and walking on his tip toes. Tucker also demonstrated some 3 4 year milestone
while playing, he showed me that he could push cars forward and back that had wheels on them, walk
in a line, and somewhat maneuver around obstacles. Although I did not see Tucker hop or balance on
one foot, throw anything over his head, or catch an object. These are things that could be better

C. S. Peirce And The Tenacity Phenomenon

I loved this essay. It was beautifully written, and the voice and reading of it was equally as majestic.
Each time I finished, I felt fuller, enriched. C.S. Peirce s four methods for arriving at beliefs are
tenacity, authority, a priori, and the scientific method. Tenacity reminded me of The Tao of Poo. This
method is the one I most respect. It has a sort of je ne sais quoi, that alludes to an idea that ignorance
is bliss, yet elite among the masses, and therefore perfected by those that use it for the betterment of
society. There is humility amidst this quality and it reveals a design of humanity in the power of
learning and the potential value of embracing many points of view, albeit the tenacity method seems to
not see the forest for the trees or budge from it s idealistic approach. By habit the tenacity method is
sort of like an ambivalent teenager. Authority is the ultimate battalion captain assessing matters from a
perspective of order and rigid reform and manufacturing a powerful sway over the masses. It seems to
be captivated in power trips and self centered control, totally oblivious to the bigger picture of reality

I found it refreshing to understand what Peirce meant by being tormented about succumbing to other s
propositions. Rebellion was the way in which I handled bullying authority figures in my life; if they
were unwilling or incapable of coping with my questioning and probing of whys , I rebelled. Because
I did not want to be micromanaged by someone that was not equipped to handle the direction I was
most interested in pursuing, I left home very young, on my own in a different country at 14 and paying

Waking Up At School Is Super Hard
Waking up in the morning for school was super hard. I am definitely not a morning person. I layed in
bed for 30 minutes with Daisy every morning before getting up. I took her down stairs every morning,
put her outside, and fed her the dog food. If she was lucky she might of got some of my food. She was
an old dog, so she did not move around very much. All day long she would sleep with my other dog
Mathis until I got home from school. One day when I got home for school she did not get up. She just
sat there with her eyes closed asleep. When I put the nasty smelling food in her loud bowl, she usually
ran. This time she just stared at me with a sad face. I went to pet her and felt a nasty bump on her
head. I just figured Mathis and her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The lady asked what are we were here for and my dad replied, We are here to put are dog Daisy down,
and send her off to a better less painful world. Oh I am sorry; we will take you to your room. We got
back to the room and gave her some last minute hugs and goodbyes. The veterinarian walked in and
put her to sleep. It was the most painful things I have ever been put through. Daisy was the greatest
dog anyone could ever have. She made me happy when I was sad, kept me fighting through tough
moments, and more. Walking out of the office was close to impossible. Tears running down everyone
s face. A couple days later Mathis, our other dog, was very depressed. He had also lost his best friend.
There was no more playing, wrestling, and cuddling. Because Mathis was so depressed, we decided to
get a new dog. We searched for a new bull dog online, and my sister spotted one she liked. He had
neat cow spot like fur with a rolled up tail that looked like a cinnamon roll. We all agreed that we had
to get him. We set out on the 3 hour journey to Ohio that next morning. The place looked like an old
vintage farm building. The smell was beautiful. it had that sense of smell you would inhale in a rose
garden. I could spot the roaming dogs in the green grass at the back of the house. The lady approached
us with a warm welcome. She showed us around the property, and there he was. The big fat bulldog
we all loved. The name Mac came straight to my head as soon as I saw

Best Practices Fo A New ERP System Implementation
Implementing A New ERP System Into The Enterprise:
Best Practices in Project and Change Management
Introduction
The most significant costs and risks a company can take are in re aligning its core business processes
and systems to allow for greater responsiveness to market opportunities and threats. Increasingly
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are being used as the unifying platform for all systems
throughout an enterprise. As a result, the project, implementation, training and support plans often
must be carefully devised and implemented across nontechnical and technical personnel to ensure the
overall project s success. ERP systems especially are fulfilling a critical role in the managing of
enterprises, taking on the tasks of managing accounting, financial reporting, supply chain
management, logistics and ongoing quality management of products, processes and the role of people
in adding value to finished goods and services (Ash, Burn, 2003). ERP has become the catalyst of
entirely new approaches to using information, including the ongoing development of analytics and
business intelligence (BI) applications that are giving executives greater visibility into their operations
than ever before (Ash, Burn, 2003). In addition to analytics and BI, companies are aggressively
pursuing Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems that give them the ability to more
effectively track and evaluate the performance of marketing and selling strategies. CRM systems are

Descriptive Essay On A Storm
The fishy smell in the air told me that there is a large storm coming. Suddenly, the rain gets harder and
it starts to hail. Clunk, clunk, clunk. The over sized hail pelts the roofs of cars and the street. The wind
push over cars and trees. Then, I hear the tornado alarm. I hear the loud whooshing of the wind
outside. As I watched, a tornado starts to form. It grows bigger and bigger. Swallowing the houses and
trees nearby, a tornado causes destruction. I rushed to the nearest house. I tried to run, but the storm
starts to clog my lungs. But when I heard the loud whooshing sound of the tornado, my hopes went
down. I could feel the force of the tornado ripping apart houses.
How did I end up in this mess? It was just a sunny day. The news didn t even say it was going to rain.
I was just playing outside, until I saw the large, deceiving rain clouds. We were playing outside, my
friends and I. But when the sky become clogged with grey clouds. Most of my friends left. I stayed,
because I left my ball around the park. It started to drizzle, and I just ignored it. Then, it started to rain
harder and harder, until I couldn t even see. I wasn t wearing a coat, so the cold rain burned my skin. I
heard the wind howling, the loud thunder. There were few houses and shelters close to me. I felt like a
helpless insect, stuck in a spider s web. By the time I got to the houses nearby, the storm would get
worse. Would I even make it to shelter, before I get stuck in this

The Patient Versus The Physician
The Patient Versus the Physician
In William Carlos William s short story, The Use of Force , the plot is unassuming. A physician is
telling the story about his efforts to save a child, named Mathilda, from herself in addition to his
efforts to protect an entire community from the tragic and fatal effects of diphtheria. In the story,
Mathilda seeks to avoid seeing a physician or risking any type of exam or diagnosis. Upon deeper
examination, the story is much more multifaceted than a simple appraisal of two characters
motivations. The Use of Force portrays a character contest between a stubborn child, Mathilda, and
the devoted physician who is narrating the story; the prize, won by the physician, is control, health,
and perhaps even ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She is determined to win this contest. She does not, however, and the physician gets the upper hand.
As soon as the physician arrives, he notices the child s penetrating stare, which seems to be filled with
fire, indicating that this task will not be easy nor will it be over quickly. He can instantly feel her
distrust of him, despite there being no expression on her young face. Initially the physician believes
that he can easily win her over and gain triumph in his pursuit to diagnose her and cure her, and
possibly safeguard the public from the spread of diphtheria. He tries to approach her in a welcoming
and peaceful manner in order to gain her trust. He tries to reassure the young Mathilda that he will not
hurt her and that he has her best interests at heart. However, the girl remains persistent. Even though
he is trying to utilize his typical professional behaviors and methods to regulate if Mathilda has a sore
throat or has diphtheria, she obstinately snubs all attempts to get her collaboration. At this point, it
appears that she may win this contest.
Then the doctor tries engaging her parents in this struggle for admission to her mouth and control of
her well being and life. Her parents try reason, rationalizing, and enticing their daughter with rewards
for her compliance. They even try to empathize with her or look at her mouth themselves, something
met with more stubbornness. Alas, the child is resolute in the protection of her right to not be

How Did Howard Carter Death Curse
Howard Carter was a british archaeologist that was known for many famous discoveries during the
early 1900 s. Carter was the lead archaeologist in the dig of Tutankhamun s (aka King Tut ) tomb. The
finding of the tomb was one of the biggest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century, even though
the opening of the tomb would forever change the team s lives. With all the excitement of this new
finding, the team threw caution to the wind and later opened the casket, little did they know that this
would later bring on a so called curse that was written in a prophecy many years ago for anyone who
disturbed the peace of a pharaoh. This curse became known as the death curse the boundaries for this
curse are limitless it knows no evil or good. According to the people in Carter s life he led a pretty
decent and well respected life for the time that he was alive, once the tomb was opened under his
command the curse began to slowly affect him and his teams lives no matter if they were good, bad,
religious or evil. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of these mysterious incidents was with a messenger Carter sent to his home, when he reached the
door he heard a frightening noise of Carter s canary crying in a painful tone. Once he was inside he

this incident is the cobra was a sign of ancient egyptian royalty. This posed the question is the death
curse real? There are many other accounts of people from carter s team dying unexpectedly from
things such as blood poisoning. Many people began to ponder if the curse was a real life thing or a
mere ancient egyptian myth. The idea of the Death Curse has crossed many scientist and archaeologist
minds over the past few decades but it has yet to be proven with anything other than circumstantial
evidence from deaths on the

As the bus meandered along the country roads, questionsfloated through my mind: How far were we

foolish being theonly ones who rented wet suits for our Colorado rafting adventure. As the

college students awaiting our arrival with dozens of yellowrafts.
Our guide, Kim, was muscular and had long, dirty blond hair thathung in clumps. We introduced

As the nose of the raft dove into the first wave, it broke over the heads of the four people in front. (I
was glad I was in back!) I yelled to continue paddling, and I don t know if I made any difference as we

All of a sudden, the river was calm. I had survived. I wanted to scream, I did it! I realized everyone

Police Brutality And The Riot
During 1992 in South Central Los Angeles, a riot started after the news of four white Los Angeles
police officers beating Rodney King was published on TV. It became daily news. The riot caused
many crimes to occur; participants of the riot burned down business stores, destroyed properties, and
some activities involved guns that have led to many deaths. Many South Central residents were
unsatisfied with police brutality and the way their community were being treated. Although the riot
only lasted for about a week, about 52 people were killed (Kivisto and Rundblad 82). The whole
neighborhood were ruined and destroyed. Ever since that riot, there were over 1 million property loss
(Kivisto and Rundblad 82), and over 700 businesses were burned down (Bergesen and Herman para.
1). Many people lost their jobs because their workplace were destroyed.
There were many different reasons that may have caused the 1992 riot in Los Angeles to occur.
However, not all of them were the main reasons of the riot. There were many side causes, for instance,
after the video of Rodney King being beaten was shown on television, residents of South Central Los
Angeles started to act up. They were affected by how King was being mistreated and how police
brutality played a big role in the video and their society. King s incident was very similar to many
other cases. For example, Anna Deavere Smith mentioned a case about Michael Zinzun from her book
Twilight Los Angeles 1992, Zinzun witnessed a police

The Time Of A Traditional Family
Entering the home of a traditional family, the youngest children are in the living room watching
television, arguing over the channel, as the oldest sibling is their room because they recently got
suspended from school, and the dog is drinking out of the toilet bowl. In the meantime, the mother is
the kitchen preparing dinner and setting up the dinner table. As she listens to the children arguing, the
laundry timer goes off, and then her husband walks in from work. Now, not every home is as chaotic
as this one, but even so, the woman was expected to handle each of these situations within the home
and have everything prepared for her husband. Motherhood and housework were the most significant
roles and positions of women in society. Rarely, would women have any type of education compared
to the men. Overtime, women have conquered much of the challenges faced by the oppression in
society, but not all. Gaining the rights to vote, receiving an education, working under for any
occupation they chose to, etc. Although, there is still some sort of dominance and power that men have
over women within every aspect of society; issues like gender and wage gap, gendered division of
labor, second shift, glass ceiling, and many more are still prominent in society. Sheryl Sandberg, in her
book, Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, and in a Ted talk argues about all the issues
women face and how women do not insist on their fair share in the home or working community.

Conservation Of Whale Carcass
While the Japanese government justifies these actions by claiming that the research they are
performing is ultimately for better management and conservation of cetaceans, these hunts are
unnecessary. Instead of killing whales to perform these tests, there are non lethal research methods
that could be used instead. According to the Japanese Whale Research Program under Special Permit
in the Antarctic, also known as JARPA II, the data that they collect includes the monitoring of whales
and krill abundance, the feeding ecology of whales, the effects of contaminants on cetaceans and their
habitat, competition among whale species, and elucidation of temporal and spatial changes in stock

The Faroese only perform the yearly hunt, or grindadrap, if all of their conditions are met. In a
National Geographic article by Jane Lee in 2014, the grind only happens if the animals are close to
shore, and this has to occur on one of their 23 pre approved beaches. The weather and waves have to
be calm enough and there have to be enough participants. None of the species that the Faroese target
are endangered and they try to cut through the neck and break the spinal cord so that death occurs
quickly. While tribes such as the Faroese adhere to these unspoken rules on ethics, there are Japanese
groups that do not adhere to these ethics and want to take advantage of the subsistence whaling plan.
The Japanese largely do not perform the hunts on a small, aboriginal scale anymore, but have
industrialized the whole process and simply wish to be granted higher quotes to hunt more whales.
This brings into focus the ethics of the hunts. In an essay by Paul Watson, cetaceans are extremely
intelligent creatures that share much more similarities with humans than previously thought (2014).
Whales have highly developed brains, are able to show a variety of behaviors that can be associated
with certain emotions, can discriminate humans from prey or other sea creatures, and exist in highly
developed social circles. They share more similarities with humans than previously thought and
deserved to be treated with this regard in mind. While some aboriginal hunters

In the 1969 case of Red Lion Broadcasting Co. v. FCC, Red...
In the 1969 case of Red Lion Broadcasting Co. v. FCC, Red Lion Broadcasting challenged the fairness
doctrine that the Federal Communication Commission imposed on them in relation to a specific
broadcast. Red Lion Broadcasting Co. aired that program on November 27, 1964, which included a
personal attack on one author Fred J. Cook. Red Lion Broadcasting Co. refused to give Fred J. Cook
his requested free time on air for rebuttal. As a result, the FCC supported Cook and ordered the radio
station to give Cook his time on air for the opportunity to refute the previous negative claims made
against him. The D.C. Circuit of the Court of Appeals subsequently upheld the FCC s decision.

In other words, the doctrine had two requirements, which were a personal attack rule and a political
editorializing rule. The personal attack rule was the portion regarding the right of public figures who
had been attacked during a FCC licensed broadcast to respond to that attack. The political
editorializing rule meant that for any endorsed or opposed candidate that was spoken of on a show,
there must be reply time offered to the unspoken of candidate.
By nature of its requirements, this doctrine was less concerned with the interests of the radio
broadcasters themselves but with the interests of the listening public. Due to limited access to radio
waves the FCC was mainly concerned with public interest in getting fair and balanced information so
that they may be an informed republic and make educated decisions, especially with regard to politics.
The airwaves were a part of the public domain and under regulation of the government and the FCC
did not want the airwaves to become monopolized. Private entities do not necessarily work for the

Safety Standards in the Meat Packing Industry Essay
Due to health reasons, the meat packing industry has aroused the attention of many. This has been
caused by the safety standards in the meat packing industry. The attention has also been caused by the
use of machines in the packing process. The industry uses fast running machines hence the employees
are exposed to more injury risk. The industry is majorly comprised of immigrants and undocumented
employees. This has greatly attracted attention due to the care for the employees who are mainly non
citizens (United States Department of Labor, 2010). The situation has led to several labor
organizations teaching the employees on safety and health administration. For instance the Nebraska

The standards interpreted on various risks that the employees in the industry were exposed to. It made
provision for the availing of personal protective equipments in the industry, responses to the various
concerns about unsanitary and unsafe conditions in the meat packing industry among others. However,
the organization had no regulation specifically for the minors in the industry (OSHA Quick take,
2010). Due to the high rate of illnesses, accidents and injuries in the industry, the organization further
developed a hazard recognition program. This was greatly supported by the directives and the
standards the organization drafted. The organization also set a safety and health program. This mainly
depended on the credibility of management s involvement in the program. This program provided for
the inclusion of the employees in the program. The program also provided for the inclusion of the
employees in the different decision making processes such as the safety and health decisions. The
employees were also to be included in the decisions that involved change in the work site practices
and conditions. The program addressed hazards despite failure by the government standard to regulate
it (Brain Mass, 2010). Due to the drastic expansion in the animal production industry, this has led to
the expansion of the meat packing industry too. This has greatly attracted more investors in the
industry as it poses as a good investment. The corporations producing meat have also

Nanotechnology and Natural Products as Novel Anti-cancer...
INTRODUCTION:
There are new approaches and agents against certain types of cancer that are urgently needed. Some of
the new agents use highly advanced technology utilizing nanoencapsulation that will improve the
therapeutic index of the natural drugs. Nanoparticles for cancer therapeutics are rapidly evolving and
are being introduced in an attempt to overcome several limitations of conventional small molecule
chemotherapeutics. Though chemotherapy is successful to some extent in certain cancers, it has
several limitations (14). I will be discussing three natural products (Currcumin, Thymoquinone and
Genistein) from plants that have anti cancer effects. These three natural products have been studied for
its antitumor mechanism against ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is due to the invasive ability of pancreatic cancer cells during the early stages of carcinogenesis.
Therefore, a majority of patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer often results in death due to
metastatic disease, even after treatment, making it very complex and difficult to treat (2).
NATURAL PRODUCTS:
Small organic molecules derived naturally from microbes and plants have provided for over 40 years a
number of useful cancer chemotherapeutic drugs. (20) A variety of natural products have been
discovered over the last decade to inhibit human cancer cell proliferation. These compounds represent
a whole new range of structurally diverse structures for anticancer drug discovery. I will focus on
three natural products derived from plants that have anti cancer effects. The natural products are as
follows: Currcumin, thymoquinone and genistein.
UTILIZING NATURAL PRODUCTS:
The hunt for naturally occurring lead compounds has continued in recent years, and are being
investigated for their anti cancer activities. Selected new compounds or their derivatives that are
described have been obtained for the first time recently from organisms of diverse biological origin,
with potential use as cancer chemotherapeutic agents. As a result, the supply of a given natural
product sample may be improved, and it may be possible to determine a beginning notion of structure
activity relationships and of its

Fan Communities Use Online Discussion Boards
Fan communities use online discussion boards to communicate with one another over the quality and
meaning of what is presented in the media. Captain America conversations stay around the Captain
America and Marvel subreddits, however their users vary; people come out as professors, marines,
artists, etc. This section will examine several pieces of fan testimony explaining their interpretation of
his character, as well as their responses to how his current media portrays him.

Cap knows it s our job to oppose anyone who seeks to hurt the innocent and oppress the weak, be it
either a supervillain or a president elect. No member of the government, not even the president
himself, gets a pass just because they re an official.
Once again, the fans look at Captain America not as someone who works for the United States
government, but represents the people. While both can be reaching for the same goal, at the end of the
day, Cap will do what he must to protect and serve the American people, and fights for the American
Dream. For the people who do not follow Captain America in the comics, they have the films to rely
on to understand his story. Some fans only watch the movies for entertainment, while others look
beyond the action for a deeper meaning. Disputing the many fans who do not consider The Winter
Soldier to be a political thriller, Reddit user theothercoolfish characterizes the political undertones in
both the Captain America movies:
Civil War is, at its heart, a deeply political movie. The philosophical question of where morality and
ethics needs to be decided, who should hold that power, was asked, debated, and resoundingly
answered.
Winter Soldier looked at how America s government has been hijacked since Rogers was put to sleep.

Masculinity In Things Fall Apart Research Paper
In 1969, Chinua Achebe published one of the first African novels written in english. He wanted to
show people the real Africa, pre colonization. In the first half of his novel, Things Fall Apart, Achebe
conveyed many themes, including those on success and masculinity.
One of the obvious themes throughout his novel is success and how it can affect others.Throughout
the book it is made known that Okonkwo s father was very unsuccessful, thus driving Okonkwo with
a ravenous desire to succeed. As stated in the text, When Unoka died he had taken no title at all and
was heavily in debt... (Achebe 3) In life Unoka had not accomplished anything, and left his family in
heaps of debt. Okonkwo was often ashamed of his father. Any wonder then that his ... Show more

Throughout the book masculinity is a prominent problem. More specifically masculinity and how it is
defined by society, even though it should not be. Some things the men in the novel do are looked
down on by our society. For example, And when she returned he beat her very heavily. In his anger he
forgot it was the week of peace. In our society people would frown upon domestic violence, but in
Okonkwo s society it is acceptable. They use it as a way to keep their women in check and to rule the
household. But even in his community Okonkwo was sometimes frowned upon because, according to
them he went too far. His first two wives ran out in great alarm pleading with him that it was the
sacred week. But Okonkwo was not the type of man to stop beating somebody halfway through , not
even for a fear of a goddess. In societies eyes Okonkwo should not have been his wives for it was the
week of peace. But to Okonkwo he was disciplining her and showing that he was the man of the house
. Everybody has different ideas on what a man should look, sound, and act like. Therefore, society
should not be able to define masculinity because everyone has different speculations.
In conclusion, in his novel Things Fall Apart, Achebe has many themes. The two talked about in this
paper are success and masculinity. Specifically how masculinity is viewed by society and one s

Where You Live Influences Health and Well-Being Essay
Social science has proven that where you live can influence your health and well being in either a
positive or negative way. Living in poverty and growing up in a deprived neighbourhood has a direct
link to various social problems such as a lack of employment opportunities, poor housing conditions,
educational problems, lack of amenities, and not feeling safe in your neighbourhood. These disparities
are especially prevalent amongst minority communities due to their lower socioeconomic status
(CDC), and are happening in our own community. Therefore, I propose that we as a group volunteer
our time to raise awareness, combat the negative effects of poverty with the use of outreach and
advocacy schemes, and be aware of the possible opposition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In addition, minority groups living in America are more likely to face disparities in regards to the
following: education, prison sentences, arrests, lower pay, and unemployment (Minority Rights).
These issues have real, dangerous implications for young people and can affect them throughout their
whole life. Elis Cose, a cultural critic, wrote in a column for USA Today, Black youngsters are much
more likely than whites to be stuck in second rate schools or in lower tracks in decent schools and to
face a future of joblessness or marginal employment (Racial Disparities). Overall, these disparities are
highly connected to the unfortunate fact that many live in deprived neighborhoods; and therefore,
experience all the social disadvantages that this brings (Crime and Race). Three components physical,
mental, and social make up health and well being. Living in poverty can negatively affect all three
components (BetterHealth). Poverty is not just about lacking money but is more complex as it can
affect everyday living in countless ways. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2013 Health
Disparities and Inequalities Report findings demonstrate that every aspect of health is worse for
people living in deprived circumstances. Poverty leads people to feel hopeless, powerless, and

Pan s Labyrinth As A Fairy Tale
Pan s Labyrinth was a fairytale that took place during the Spanish Civil war. This movie was a good
example of a fairytale for many different reasons. One reason why Pan s Labyrinth is a good example
of a fairy tale is because of the use of the fairytale characters: faun, fairy, and evil human eating
monster. In a fairytale is usually has unexpected monsters or creatures and this movie has a bunch of
mythical creatures. Another example of how Pan s Labyrinth is a good example of a fairytale is
because of the way the story goes. In this film is has an evil leader and his army with his beliefs, and it

evil person is the Spanish army s leader, and the Spanish army s power is his massive army that will
obey his every command with no revolution because if they do, they will be killed. For example, he
found out a doctor was on the other side, he put the doctor in a room with the army leader and the
doctor alone. Interrogated him, and eventually killed him for doing so anyways. This evil Spanish
leader, had not only power but authority already made in a conference room with other leaders and

where it was supposed to go. After she had put the eye back in the stone, a big praying mantis looking

Dysgraphia
Dyslexia affects the way a student reads but another specific learning disability, dysgraphia, also
affects the way a student writes (Adam 1). Dysgraphia is a condition that causes people trouble with
writing due to poor handwriting (Adam 1). Students with ASDs are at an increased risk of developing
dysgraphia (Adam 1). Children with ASDs do not learn motor skills as regularly as a normal
developing student would (Versfeld 1). Because of this many students do not develop the fine motor
skills needed to hold a pencil correctly, which could result in messy, unreadable handwriting (Adam
1). Another symptom of dysgraphia is poor grasp of spelling, grammar and punctuation (Adam 1).

their written work more efficiently than by hand (Stanberry 4). Speech recognition programs, which
are mainly used for students whose oral language skills are better than their writing skills, work in
conjunction with word processors (Stanberry 5). A user dictates their work into a microphone and their
spoken words appear on the computer screen as text (Stanberry 5). Paper based computer pens records

A Comaprison of the Miller s Tale and Merchant s Tale
Comparing Miller s Tale and Merchant s Tale
Alison in the Miller s Tale and May of the Merchant s Tale are similar in several ways. Both are young
women who have married men much older than themselves. They both become involved with young,
manipulative men. They also conspire to and do cuckold their husbands. This is not what marriage is
about and it is demonstrated in both tales. What makes the Miller s Tale bawdy comedy and the
Merchant s tale bitter satire is in the characterization. In the Miller s tale we are giving stereotyped
characters. The principals are cardboard cut outs sent into farcical motion. The Merchant s Tale gives
us much more background and detail of the character s lives. The reader is more involved and can ...

reader is privy to none of this with Alison.
It does not take much persuasion on Nicholas part to talk Alison into having an affair with her. The
idea of tricking her husband is a game for her. With impish delight she conspires with Nicholas the
outlandish plot of convincing her husband that a great flood is coming. With her husband safety
ensconced in a bathtub hanging from the roof, Alison plays with Nicholas. And it is play for then we
have the quot;kissing quot; scene with Absalom. Alison is having fun with the whole situation, it is
just a great time for her.
May does not love Damien any more than she loves January. He is just a better, convenient alternative.
We know she cares not for Damien as when she receives a love letter from him she easily disposes it
in the privy. It is easy to see that her motivation for adultery is really one of revenge and not out of
affection for Damien. January assaulted her by the mere fact of marrying her. This is satire on the
whole theme of courtly love. This feeling of revenge on her part is further demonstrated in the cuckold
scene.
May deceives January quite wickedly in the garden. Yet for the reader we can not fault her for it.

Essay On Dynamite
Beginnings of Dynamite
The late 18th and the early 19th century saw the rise of the Industrial Revolution. The transcontinental
railroad across the USA was being built; in Australia and California, gold rushes were driving people
crazy trying to get rich; in Seuz, a great canal was being dug through the earth; and in England,
London s famous Underground Railroad system was being built. For these engineering projects to be
made possible for all the blasting, tunneling, trenching, mining, and excavation to be made possible
we needed explosives.
At the beginning of the industrial revolution there were two main explosives used: black powder and
nitroglycerine. Black powder had been used as early as the 1600s for construction and mining. Holes

It revolutionized the processes of constructing, demolishing, and mining. As innovations involving the
use of dynamite increased, a wide range of versatility provided a new wave of development. With the

Dynamite provided man with an awesome power the ability to dramatically change the face of the
earth. (Modern marvels Dynamite). We now could blast through rock at a rate unheard of with the low
power of black powder. Some of dynamite s first uses were creating trenches for irrigation systems,
blasting rock in mines and quarries, and removing trees and stumps. This adoption of dynamite started
to lead to larger, more ambitious project eventually working its way into almost every aspect of the
industrial revolution. It unleashed the power that enabled the monumental industrial development of
the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including hydro power, skyscrapers, and coal and oil
exploration. Canals and railroads, mining and construction, tunnels and harbors were all now
economically and physically possible. Even concrete could become a common construction material
once limestone could be blasted from quarries. Dynamite liberated laborers from the tiresome slaving

The Victorian era, spanning from 1830 1901, was a period of dramatic change with the rapid extension
of colonialism through Africa, Asia and the West Indies making England a world power and relocating
the perceived centre of western civilisation to London. Advances in industry, science, technology,
architecture, medicine and travel were among these changes as well as the growing interest, among the

Both vastness and ocean make the reader feel lost and fearful of the unknown activities and size of the
room. Other words like mystery and suggestion add to create the effect of fear and suspense. Many
other words such as omens , spiritual , ghosts , witches , shadows , echoes , haunted , spectral and
subterranean are piled on the reader to create a sense of fear, vulnerability and death.
Next is The Signalman by Charles Dickens, which is about a visit from a ghost. The setting for this
story is very old, depressing, dingy and gloomy but the scenery around the signalman isn t reflected in
his personality. His box is located underground next to the railway line. Straight away the setting
seems to be weird as it s descending down, as if almost entering hell, zigzag path descending down . I
think this because most nice stairways are straight and go up, not uneven. The writer also describes the

words I would think of when dungeon is mentioned. Also it says there was a gloomy red light, and the
gloomier entrance to a black, in whose massive architecture there was a barbourus, depressing and
forbidding air . This makes the reader think that this

St. Joseph s Motivation
Motivation
Motivation for parish staff to continue work at St. Joseph s resides in their desire to foster the mission
of the Church both on the broad level and on the more specific level of St. Joseph s. We felt the
fulfillment of the parish staff strongly. While working at the parish is indeed a job, we experienced a
mentality that staff members felt privileged to work at St. Joseph s. One of the accountants, Cathy
Bohnen, stated she looks forward to coming in to St. Joseph s. We believe this supports the notion that
the environment at St. Joseph s is one which encourages and supports its staff members simply by
creating an environment conducive to the work expected of staff.
The parish nurtures this innate motivation to work for the Church in several ways; first, there is daily
morning prayer for the staff. Whoever is around and desires to participate gathers at the front desk
where a short prayer reflection occurs. In addition, Fr. Creagan encourages daily Mass; these practices

Negative Impact of Whaling in Japan
Biodiversity often appears as an under the radar issue that is put on the backburner to other
environmental problems such as: climate change, ocean acidification, or ozone depletion. When in
reality, it should really be a frontrunner as it explicitly involves all living things that dwell within our
shared biosphere. While the human population did not really start making waves to remedy the
endangerment or extinction of plants and animals until the 1970s with laws that included, the Marine
Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act; we have proved that our part in biodiversity
is crucial now that we live in the anthropogenic age. A hot and debated topic on the subject of
biodiversity arose with the International Whaling Commission
(IWC), an international body that is set on goals to preserve whale stocks and regulate whaling as to
help various species recover from near endangerment. Most all practices of hunting whales were
banned along the globe but, exceptions were made in cases such as Japan; for alleged scientific
purposes. The focus issues of this paper will stem from the controversy involving whaling,
specifically in Japan, because while they justify their reasons for continued whale hunting, they still
walk a fine line in the eyes of anti whalers and whale watchers alike.
Commercial whaling was banned by the IWC around 1986 but the hunting still continued under

its etiology and determine its optimal treatment. Appropriate and adequate treatment will depend on
understanding the pathophysiology of the entity. Uncertainty over the etiology of the Chiari
malformation has led to debate and controversy of the optimal surgical management of the condition.
Various surgical approaches have been proposed, however the debate as to whether duroplasty is
required is still active. CASE A 31 year old male presented to the outpatient department of the
University Hospital of the West Indies with a one year history of weakness of the upper limbs that had
been affecting his function at school. He was also complaining of headaches that were located mostly
over the frontal area of the head and were aggravated by sneezing and coughing. He denied any
vertigo, vomiting, lateralising weakness, fever or neck stiffness. On examination, he had a Glasgow
Coma Score (GCS) of 15 with no cranial nerve deficits. No cerebellar signs were elicit, he however
had grade IV/V ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From the data presented, the addition of a duroplasty appears to provide more durable results,
especially in reducing the size of the syrinx. There are however certain circumstances in which just
bony decompression may suffice and hence reduce the morbidity of opening the dura. Other surgical
options such as leaving the inner layer of dura intact have promising results. Currently the
decompression of Chiari malformation (DECMI) trial, a large randomized prospective study, looking
at minimally invasive method for decompressing a Chiari 1 malformation is currently underway. This
will provide more insight in the need, or lack thereof, to perform a

Accounting Standards Boards
The field of accounting is constantly evolving. This is true not only for the theory of accounting itself
but also the entities that govern its theory and practice. Presently, the Financial Accounting Standards
Board (FASB) and the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) are faced with some of the
biggest challenges to date. To understand the significance of these two boards, it is necessary to
understand their histories, relations between the boards, and the standards that they set. Also how the
knowledge of these boards and the field they lead, gained through the masters of science in
accountancy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The works of the APB were known as APB Opinions. The APB was criticized as well, so the AICPA
appointed two committees, from whose recommendations the FASB was founded in 1973 (Schroeder,
Clark, Cathey, 2011, p. 5 9).
International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) As stated earlier, the IASB arose from specific
needs of the accounting industry and the public. As international trade has increased, the need for
transnational accounting information has increased as well. This sparked the demand for development
of international accounting standards to make financial data between countries more comparable. In
1973, the International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC) was formed to develop these
international standards. The standards issued by the IASC, prior to 2001, were called International
Accounting Standards (IASs). In 2001, the IASC made the International Accounting Standards Board
(IASB) the official international standard setting body. The standards issued by the IASB are called
International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRSs) (Schroeder, Clark, Cathey, 2011, p. 82 87).
FASB and IASB Convergence The purpose of convergence by the two boards is to create a common
set of standards for use by both domestic and foreign entities to create internationally comparable
statements. The boards initially met in 2002 for a meeting known as the Norwalk

his 12 hour long closing arguments, for the most covered news story since World War I. Darrow mixes
ethos and logos appeals, bringing tears to the eyes of the judge and many in the courtroom, to serve
justice by saving his clients, Leopold and Loeb from the death penalty. Darrow implores the Judge to
spare the lives of Leopold and Loeb. As Darrow said, I am pleading for life...I am pleading that we
overcome cruelty with kindness and hatred with love. (Placeholder1; Linder)
Three months prior on Wednesday, May 22, 1924; two college boys ignite one of the most stunning
Mass Media events of the Twentieth Century. Nathan Babe Leopold born to wealthy immigrant Jewish
Germans is a 19 year old, child prodigy with an intelligence score of 210. He has already completed
an undergraduate degree at the University of Chicago with Phi Beta Kappa honors and plans to begin

Aristotle Voluntary And Involuntary Act Summary
In Book III Chapter one of The Nicomachean Ethnics, Aristotle has his explanation of the meaning of
the voluntary act and involuntary act. He thinks the criterion for judging whether a man should be held
accountable for one of his actions was whether he had acted voluntarily. As the main idea of book
three moral virtue, Aristotle starts his discussion from point out the issue of moral responsibility,
which can be considered as a basis of moral virtue, because if a man cannot be responsible for the
action he did, then theoretically the discussion is superfluous. For example, the person was carried by
the wind; then his behavior does not have any moral significance. Therefore, Aristotle wants to make a
distinction between the voluntary actions and the involuntary actions, that is, for the moral
responsibility to draw a piece of their territory, as a basis to talk about other ... Show more content on

have more initiatives than the latter, and the two acts C and D seems too passive, and closer to the
involuntary actions but still because of its will. However, C and D can clearly reflect the meaning of
the mixed actions, that is, in a situation, we are willing to make the choice which is voluntarily, but if
it is in a different situation, then it against our wills. In this case, A should be praise; B should be
blamed because Aristotle thinks this is characteristic of wicked; C cannot get the praise, but because of
the pressure, it can get away from the blame. However, that does not mean the action is right; D.
cannot be forgiven because the fear we have of this kind of evil action should greater than anything

An Independent T-Test Was Done On Each Item Of The Evaluation
An independent t test was done on each item of the evaluation questions. The purpose of each
statement on evaluation form was to measure the enjoyment level of participants after taking a whole
semester of the boring class. The independent t test showed that there was a significant difference
between how conventional and creative group responded to taking the class was a waste of time .
Participants in creative group (M = 2.94, SD = .97) scored significantly higher than participants in
conventional group (M = 2.25, SD = .86, t(31) = 2.17, p = .038).Also independent t test showed a

As shown in the result section, the ANOVA test showed that there was no significant relationship
between individuals attachment styles and openness to new experiences with how much they enjoyed
taking the class. Another part of the study focused on how people in different conditions would enjoy
the forced task differently. The independent t test results, mentioned in result section, showed that
participants in creative condition reported less enjoyment than participants in conventional condition.
To be specific, participants in creative group scored higher (than conventional group) in the statement;
taking the class was a waste of time , which means they found the class was a waste of time, therefore,
they did not enjoy the class. Also, participants in creative condition scored higher (than conventional
group) in I did not gain any useful knowledge from taking this class which means they developed a
more negative perspective towards the class. Furthermore, participants in the creative group reported
that they did not benefit from taking the class so it means the conventional participants found the class
more enjoyable and beneficial. All these significant findings suggest that the overall class enjoyment

Geography In David Foster s Life
In this chapter, Foster explains how geography is more than just hills, streams, and grasslands it brings
history along with it, and has the ability to shape a character s actions and personality. In addition, he
alludes to the Russians; a people whose toughness and tenacity in defending their homeland matched
the merciless elements (Foster 173), in order to show how the geography, or place, a person lives in
can affect their overall being. Foster claims that geography can also define or even develop character
(Foster 175); he says that traveling back to your real home can help you discover your true self,
because that is where your loved ones are; that is where you grew up; that is where you know each
tree and each stream; and that is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, when Victor first returns to his home, he is comforted by the familiarness of it: ...the
delight I took in again beholding thy streams, thy mountains, and, more than all, thy lovely lake!
(Shelly 67). He knows the geography of his homeland; it is where he grew up, and it is where he will
finally see his loved ones again. However, he knows why he is really there it is for the terrible murder
of his younger brother, William. When unable to enter the town, Victor decides to visit the woods
where William was killed. As he approaches the woods, it begins to rain slowly, and as he gets closer
the rain becomes more vicious. When he arrives he exclaims, William, dear angel! this is thy funeral,
this thy dirge! (Shelly 68). A flash of lightning reveals the silhouette of the ghastly murderer, his own
creation, glooming in the midst of trees. This place now holds the memory of this forever for Victor,
these are the woods where his brother died, and if he is ever to see these woods again, the memory
will come rushing back with them. Not only is this his brother s death bed, but it is also where he
discovers that his creation is the cause of the terrible tragedy. And what a more fitting place to have
this memory? The looming trees, the rushing stream, the sound of the rain pouring over everything,
the flashes of lighting this image will now always be associated with this place for

Racial Prejudice In Society

Prejudice in Society: A Social Challenge
Prejudice is the term referring to the practice of forming an opinion or value of someone or something,
in the absence of direct experience of that person or thing (Augoustinos, Walker and Donaghue 225).
Prejudice include preformed opinions and views made prior to uncovering of the real facts and
knowledge behind the subject from an individual, a group of people, or even the values and beliefs
they espouse. In some societies, prejudices have been regarded as pervasive social challenges, serving
to separate groups of people and individuals along divisive lies drawn by their different opinions
(Rauch 1995). While prejudices ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Allowing racial prejudice to continue without any form of intervention would be opening doors to
building up animosity and negative tension between involved groups (Augoustinos and Reynolds
244). Using the same example of racial prejudice, it would be apparent that the raised dissimilarities
and opinions against either groups will be destructive in terms of building social cognition and
cohesion among racial groups (Augoustinos, Walker and Donaghue 226). On the other hand, Rauch
advocates for intellectual pluralism with the standpoint that it would provide protection for the
vulnerable minority groups. As pointed out in his article on prejudice, pluralism conjectures that there
will always exist such prejudices , which should instead be marginalized, exploited, ridiculed, but left
alone at the end (Rauch 1995). It is evident that preconceptions and bigotries cannot be eliminated
from every corner as presupposed by purist view. Contrary to Rauch s view that suppressing prejudice
will be counterproductive, however, measures put across public utilities and institutions are beneficial
in curtailing spread of malicious opinions. These include equal employment opportunity extended to
all people by public institutions regardless of their racial background. Another effective measure has
been the inhibiting of any form of racial utterances, abuse and actions in these institutions, especially
violent behavior, motivated by racial hatred with the malicious intent of injuring a person of another
race. In addition to these, institutions have the mandate to sue in court such behavior within our justice

Luis Barragan s Style Of Architecture
Luis Barragan is an important architect that has shared his individual influences in many of his
artworks. The biggest influence in Barragan s style of architecture is from his hometown as well as
villages in Mexico. He researched architecture by himself along with experience. In my opinion, it is
important to educate ourselves about multiple architects. So that we can be exposed to multiple styles
of architecture. The whole purpose is so that we can be influenced by professionals. Luis Barragan is a
prime example of an architect who has a particular style. Although, he went through the same process,
he educated himself through architectural writers as well as friends.

Simply due to the fact that it has many elements of his traditional style. The usage of the space is
separated into two levels. Throughout the levels of the house there is rhythm implemented in the
beamed ceiling, that match the oak stairway. The staircase is almost an optical illusion. The areas in
the house that are used the most are the library and the living room.
The library consist of multiple publications, photographs, and personal papers. The shelving in the
library is a good representation of horizontal lines. It stands out in the space and makes it look as if the
space is full. I think the shelving is a point on emphasis in the library, it also makes the viewers eyes
move along the space. Barragan does a good job of controlling the contrast of the geometric shapes
used throughout the spaces.
The influence on the house is mostly Mexican but there are other influences as well. One of the
Mexican influences that stands out to me is his use of color. The vibrant colors he uses in his artwork
are traditional in Mexico. The house consist of the colors orange, pink, yellow, and green, as well as
other neutral colors. The Mexican ceramics and textiles fit the theme of the entire space as

  • 2. The Death Of The Dog Essay ~Glisten~ Great, how am I gonna get out of this mess? I m going to jail for this! All these horrifying things were running through my head. I kept poking my head up to see if anybody was there, but no one was ever there and I m afraid if I get up someone will see me. I was about to get up when I heard a random growl right next to me. Please don t tell what I think it is? I nervously gulp in a lump in my throat and turned around to be face to face to an protective dog. All of a sudden it started to bark very loudly, I was trying to shush the dog so I wouldn t get caught. God, please be quite. I shush the dog more but it kept on barking. MISSY BE QUITE! I heard the same voice hissed at the dog. The dog became quite, I put my hand on chest trying to get my heart rate back to a normal pace. I was about to get up when the dog started to bark again. • 3. Examples Of Rhetorics In Fast Food Nation When using rhetoric tenets, writers can create arguments that are very effective or ineffective at persuading an audience. This is seen in Eric Schlosser s book Fast Food Nation in which he uses the three rhetoric tenets to better assure his claim of fast food but also use the rhetoric tenets ineffectively in an argument. By using these rhetorical ideas, his writing is very persuasive at points but also left unsuccessful at other times. The use of ethos in Fast Food Nation is seen many times to help Schlosser appeal as credible and trustworthy while ensuring that he knows what he is talking about which adds persuasive flow to the argument. One use of effective ethos is when Schlosser talks about the McDonald s Corporation taking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This takes away from the main impact of the claims and doesn t help to strengthen his argument. His use of ethos strengthens his arguments throughout times in the book but some of the research makes his claims longer and harder to follow which takes away from the main argument he is trying to portray. Schlosser s use of logos is also seen in a variety of ways in the book. During the argument about advertisements and corporate sponsors for school materials in school districts, he states, A 1998 study of these teaching materials by the Consumers Union found that 80 percent were biased, providing students with incomplete or slanted information that favored the sponsor s products and views (55). Schlosser s use of logos is effective because the facts and statistics giving an overwhelming factor on how biased fast food corporations are towards the youth, even when giving them school supplies. Schlosser uses this example because it shows that fast food corporations want to persuade children at a young age, which adds sympathy for the youth and hatred towards the big fast food chains. However, there are times when Schlosser s use of logos does not completely help the argument. When talking about sanitation crews at meat packing plants, Schlosser looks to build an argument on how sanitation jobs are unsafe for the workers. He states, Although official statistics are not kept, the death rate among slaughterhouse sanitation crews is extraordinarily high ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Programming Bacteria To Sense Pressure Case Study Programming bacteria to sense pressure Neydis Moreno and Megan N. McClean Pattern generating circuits coupled to production of organic material with inorganic interfaces allow bacterial colonies to generate composite structures with unique function. Mother Nature generates sophisticated and complicated structures from the humblest of ingredients. Often their construction relies on the self assembly of building blocks resulting in hybrid structures that combine both organic and inorganic materials. For example, Shewanella bacteria are capable of forming extracellular networks of arsenic sulfide nanotubes with unique electrical and photoconductive properties1. Our ability to mimic these natural processes to create desirable nano and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cao, et al2 take advantage of an existing circuit capable of generating spatial patterning in two dimensional populations of bacteria6 to pattern production of a modified curli protein in colonies of E. coli. Curli is an extracellular amyloid material produced by E. coli that forms fibrils based on self assembly of the major secreted curli subunit (CsgA) and an additional subunit CsgB. The authors utilize the circuit described in Payne, et al (which consists of a positive feedback loop (mutant T7 RNA polymerase T7RNAP activates its own expression) and a negative feedback loop based on production of a diffusible quorum sensing molecule AHL (see Figure 1). . Expression of the curli protein occurs at high levels of the quorum sensing molecule AHL. By engineering curli to contain a polyhistidine tag (6XHis) it can be interfaced with inorganic materials, for example, gold nanoparticles conjugated to Ni Nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA). Cao et al use ink jet printing to print cells onto membranes to form single colonies of E. coli containing this synthetic curli producing circuit. They found that the spatial patterning circuit caused curli to be expressed in the exterior of the colony, forming domed curli structures. In contrast, cells constitutively expressing curli without the patterning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. C. S. Peirce And The Tenacity Phenomenon All that wonder are not lost. Actions for All that wonder are not lost. Created by Faye Lynn on Sep 13, 2015 11:58 PM Subscribe Previous Next I loved this essay. It was beautifully written, and the voice and reading of it was equally as majestic. Each time I finished, I felt fuller, enriched. C.S. Peirce s four methods for arriving at beliefs are tenacity, authority, a priori, and the scientific method. Tenacity reminded me of The Tao of Poo. This method is the one I most respect. It has a sort of je ne sais quoi, that alludes to an idea that ignorance is bliss, yet elite among the masses, and therefore perfected by those that use it for the betterment of society. There is humility amidst this quality and it reveals a design of humanity in the power of learning and the potential value of embracing many points of view, albeit the tenacity method seems to not see the forest for the trees or budge from it s idealistic approach. By habit the tenacity method is sort of like an ambivalent teenager. Authority is the ultimate battalion captain assessing matters from a perspective of order and rigid reform and manufacturing a powerful sway over the masses. It seems to be captivated in power trips and self centered control, totally oblivious to the bigger picture of reality beyond ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Best Practices Fo A New ERP System Implementation Implementing A New ERP System Into The Enterprise: Best Practices in Project and Change Management Introduction The most significant costs and risks a company can take are in re aligning its core business processes and systems to allow for greater responsiveness to market opportunities and threats. Increasingly Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are being used as the unifying platform for all systems throughout an enterprise. As a result, the project, implementation, training and support plans often must be carefully devised and implemented across nontechnical and technical personnel to ensure the overall project s success. ERP systems especially are fulfilling a critical role in the managing of enterprises, taking on the tasks of managing accounting, financial reporting, supply chain management, logistics and ongoing quality management of products, processes and the role of people in adding value to finished goods and services (Ash, Burn, 2003). ERP has become the catalyst of entirely new approaches to using information, including the ongoing development of analytics and business intelligence (BI) applications that are giving executives greater visibility into their operations than ever before (Ash, Burn, 2003). In addition to analytics and BI, companies are aggressively pursuing Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems that give them the ability to more effectively track and evaluate the performance of marketing and selling strategies. The finding of the tomb was one of the biggest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century, even though the opening of the tomb would forever change the team s lives. With all the excitement of this new finding, the team threw caution to the wind and later opened the casket, little did they know that this would later bring on a so called curse that was written in a prophecy many years ago for anyone who disturbed the peace of a pharaoh. This curse became known as the death curse the boundaries for this curse are limitless it knows no evil or good. It became daily news. The riot caused many crimes to occur; participants of the riot burned down business stores, destroyed properties, and some activities involved guns that have led to many deaths. Many South Central residents were unsatisfied with police brutality and the way their community were being treated. Although the riot only lasted for about a week, about 52 people were killed (Kivisto and Rundblad 82). The whole neighborhood were ruined and destroyed. Ever since that riot, there were over 1 million property loss (Kivisto and Rundblad 82), and over 700 businesses were burned down (Bergesen and Herman para. 1). Many people lost their jobs because their workplace were destroyed. There were many different reasons that may have caused the 1992 riot in Los Angeles to occur. However, not all of them were the main reasons of the riot. There were many side causes, for instance, after the video of Rodney King being beaten was shown on television, residents of South Central Los Angeles started to act up. They were affected by how King was being mistreated and how police brutality played a big role in the video and their society. King s incident was very similar to many other cases. In a National Geographic article by Jane Lee in 2014, the grind only happens if the animals are close to shore, and this has to occur on one of their 23 pre approved beaches. The weather and waves have to be calm enough and there have to be enough participants. None of the species that the Faroese target are endangered and they try to cut through the neck and break the spinal cord so that death occurs quickly. While tribes such as the Faroese adhere to these unspoken rules on ethics, there are Japanese groups that do not adhere to these ethics and want to take advantage of the subsistence whaling plan. The Japanese largely do not perform the hunts on a small, aboriginal scale anymore, but have industrialized the whole process and simply wish to be granted higher quotes to hunt more whales. This brings into focus the ethics of the hunts. In an essay by Paul Watson, cetaceans are extremely intelligent creatures that share much more similarities with humans than previously thought (2014). Whales have highly developed brains, are able to show a variety of behaviors that can be associated with certain emotions, can discriminate humans from prey or other sea creatures, and exist in highly developed social circles. FCC, Red Lion Broadcasting challenged the fairness doctrine that the Federal Communication Commission imposed on them in relation to a specific broadcast. Red Lion Broadcasting Co. aired that program on November 27, 1964, which included a personal attack on one author Fred J. Cook. Red Lion Broadcasting Co. refused to give Fred J. Cook his requested free time on air for rebuttal. As a result, the FCC supported Cook and ordered the radio station to give Cook his time on air for the opportunity to refute the previous negative claims made against him. The D.C. In other words, the doctrine had two requirements, which were a personal attack rule and a political editorializing rule. The personal attack rule was the portion regarding the right of public figures who had been attacked during a FCC licensed broadcast to respond to that attack. The political editorializing rule meant that for any endorsed or opposed candidate that was spoken of on a show, there must be reply time offered to the unspoken of candidate. By nature of its requirements, this doctrine was less concerned with the interests of the radio broadcasters themselves but with the interests of the listening public. Due to limited access to radio waves the FCC was mainly concerned with public interest in getting fair and balanced information so that they may be an informed republic and make educated decisions, especially with regard to politics. The airwaves were a part of the public domain and under regulation of the government and the FCC did not want the airwaves to become monopolized. Private entities do not necessarily work for the public interest without incentive. Thus, by law the FCC only renewed broadcast licenses to those radio stations that complied with the Fairness Doctrine. These disparities are especially prevalent amongst minority communities due to their lower socioeconomic status (CDC), and are happening in our own community. • 39. Duroplasty Essay TYPE 1 CHIARI MALFORMATION Duroplasty or Not INTRODUCTION Since the description of malformations of the hindbrain, there has been a very keen interest in attempting to accurately define its etiology and determine its optimal treatment. Appropriate and adequate treatment will depend on understanding the pathophysiology of the entity. Uncertainty over the etiology of the Chiari malformation has led to debate and controversy of the optimal surgical management of the condition. Various surgical approaches have been proposed, however the debate as to whether duroplasty is required is still active. CASE A 31 year old male presented to the outpatient department of the University Hospital of the West Indies with a one year history of weakness of the upper limbs that had been affecting his function at school. He was also complaining of headaches that were located mostly over the frontal area of the head and were aggravated by sneezing and coughing. He denied any vertigo, vomiting, lateralising weakness, fever or neck stiffness. On examination, he had a Glasgow Coma Score (GCS) of 15 with no cranial nerve deficits. No cerebellar signs were elicit, he however had grade IV/V ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From the data presented, the addition of a duroplasty appears to provide more durable results, especially in reducing the size of the syrinx. There are however certain circumstances in which just bony decompression may suffice and hence reduce the morbidity of opening the dura. Other surgical options such as leaving the inner layer of dura intact have promising results. Currently the decompression of Chiari malformation (DECMI) trial, a large randomized prospective study, looking at minimally invasive method for decompressing a Chiari 1 malformation is currently underway. Acc 541 Accounting Standards Board Paper Accounting Standards Boards Leslie Brian ACC/541 November 14, 2011 Delphine Agnor Wolsker Accounting Standards Boards The field of accounting is constantly evolving. This is true not only for the theory of accounting itself but also the entities that govern its theory and practice. Presently, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) are faced with some of the biggest challenges to date. To understand the significance of these two boards, it is necessary to understand their histories, relations between the boards, and the standards that they set. Also how the knowledge of these boards and the field they lead, gained through the masters of science in accountancy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The works of the APB were known as APB Opinions. The APB was criticized as well, so the AICPA appointed two committees, from whose recommendations the FASB was founded in 1973 (Schroeder, Clark, Cathey, 2011, p. 5 9). International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) As stated earlier, the IASB arose from specific needs of the accounting industry and the public. As international trade has increased, the need for transnational accounting information has increased as well. This sparked the demand for development of international accounting standards to make financial data between countries more comparable. In 1973, the International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC) was formed to develop these international standards. The standards issued by the IASC, prior to 2001, were called International Accounting Standards (IASs). In 2001, the IASC made the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) the official international standard setting body. The standards issued by the IASB are called International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRSs) (Schroeder, Clark, Cathey, 2011, p. 82 87). FASB and IASB Convergence The purpose of convergence by the two boards is to create a common set of standards for use by both domestic and foreign entities to create internationally comparable statements. The boards initially met in 2002 for a meeting known as the Norwalk ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He thinks the criterion for judging whether a man should be held accountable for one of his actions was whether he had acted voluntarily. As the main idea of book three moral virtue, Aristotle starts his discussion from point out the issue of moral responsibility, which can be considered as a basis of moral virtue, because if a man cannot be responsible for the action he did, then theoretically the discussion is superfluous. For example, the person was carried by the wind; then his behavior does not have any moral significance. Therefore, Aristotle wants to make a distinction between the voluntary actions and the involuntary actions, that is, for the moral responsibility to draw a piece of their territory, as a basis to talk about other ... In this case, A should be praise; B should be blamed because Aristotle thinks this is characteristic of wicked; C cannot get the praise, but because of the pressure, it can get away from the blame. Geography In David Foster s Life In this chapter, Foster explains how geography is more than just hills, streams, and grasslands it brings history along with it, and has the ability to shape a character s actions and personality. In addition, he alludes to the Russians; a people whose toughness and tenacity in defending their homeland matched the merciless elements (Foster 173), in order to show how the geography, or place, a person lives in can affect their overall being. Foster claims that geography can also define or even develop character (Foster 175); he says that traveling back to your real home can help you discover your true self, because that is where your loved ones are; that is where you grew up; that is where you know each tree and each stream; and that is ... However, he knows why he is really there it is for the terrible murder of his younger brother, William. When unable to enter the town, Victor decides to visit the woods where William was killed. As he approaches the woods, it begins to rain slowly, and as he gets closer the rain becomes more vicious. When he arrives he exclaims, William, dear angel! this is thy funeral, this thy dirge! Racial Prejudice In Society Gyeongrok (Steve) Byun Professor Hayley Laird English 118 0551 July 20, 2015 Prejudice in Society: A Social Challenge Prejudice is the term referring to the practice of forming an opinion or value of someone or something, in the absence of direct experience of that person or thing (Augoustinos, Walker and Donaghue 225). Prejudice include preformed opinions and views made prior to uncovering of the real facts and knowledge behind the subject from an individual, a group of people, or even the values and beliefs they espouse. In some societies, prejudices have been regarded as pervasive social challenges, serving to separate groups of people and individuals along divisive lies drawn by their different opinions (Rauch 1995). While prejudices ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Allowing racial prejudice to continue without any form of intervention would be opening doors to building up animosity and negative tension between involved groups (Augoustinos and Reynolds 244). Using the same example of racial prejudice, it would be apparent that the raised dissimilarities and opinions against either groups will be destructive in terms of building social cognition and cohesion among racial groups (Augoustinos, Walker and Donaghue 226). On the other hand, Rauch advocates for intellectual pluralism with the standpoint that it would provide protection for the vulnerable minority groups. As pointed out in his article on prejudice, pluralism conjectures that there will always exist such prejudices , which should instead be marginalized, exploited, ridiculed, but left alone at the end (Rauch 1995). It is evident that preconceptions and bigotries cannot be eliminated from every corner as presupposed by purist view. Contrary to Rauch s view that suppressing prejudice will be counterproductive, however, measures put across public utilities and institutions are beneficial in curtailing spread of malicious opinions. These include equal employment opportunity extended to all people by public institutions regardless of their racial background. Another effective measure has been the inhibiting of any form of racial utterances, abuse and actions in these institutions, especially violent behavior, motivated by racial hatred with the malicious intent of injuring a person of another race. In addition to these, institutions have the mandate to sue in court such behavior within our justice ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The biggest influence in Barragan s style of architecture is from his hometown as well as villages in Mexico. He researched architecture by himself along with experience. The whole purpose is so that we can be influenced by professionals. Luis Barragan is a prime example of an architect who has a particular style.
