Multilingualism and European Commission
About 250 million years ago, Pangæa the supercontinent was split up and eventually settled on the
current continental configuration. As civilization flourished, the inhabitants developed their own
language and culture on each continent. However, trading and getting along with the neighboring
communities forced many groups to learn more than their mother tongue. This pragmatic use of
multilingualism is especially evident in Sub–Saharan Africa. Today, the benefits of mastering more
than one language has influenced other continents such as Europe to incorporate multilingualism
into its society. Consequently, in the world's population, multilingual speakers outnumber
monolingual spealers. Despite being so close to Quebec and Mexico, ... Show more content on

Consequently, multilingualism can unlock the full potential of the single market in terms of better
jobs and prosperity (European Commission). Given the appropriate environment, people tend to
pick up a new language easily at a young age. Multilingualism doesn't require complete fluency in
another language, or the ability to speak two unrelated languages. The benefits of multilingualism
are so stupendous that they extend outside the area of language. Children and elders learning a
foreign language have been demonstrated to be consistently better able to deal with distractions, like
holding two languages concurrently without allowing words and grammar slip from one to another
(Bialystok). Multilingual speakers also develop a greater vocabulary size over time (Kosmidis), a
markedly better language proficiency in, sensitivity to, and understanding of their mother tongue
(Johnson), and have a better ear for listening and sharper memories (Lapkin, Ratte). Furthermore,
evidence has shown that skill in several languages fosters creativity and innovation: multilingual
people are aware that problems can be tackled in different ways according to different linguistic and
cultural backgrounds (European Commission). They can use this ability to find new solutions.
Ultimately, United States needs to acknowledge that the social,

As Americans, we believe that our great country is a land of milk and honey, of open windows and
opportunities, and of rights and privileges. With that being said, we all strive to live the American
Dream, with some if not most of us, leaving not only our mother country in the process but our
comfort zone. The question to ask is, "Is everyone in this nation, legal or illegal, entitled to these
blessings bestowed to us by this country?" After all, according to the Declaration of Independence,
we as human beings are granted life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (US 1776). The better
question to be presented and dare to be asked is, "Should illegal immigrants without documentation

allows us to be entertained and not be idle. Learning not only opens opportunities for us, but it opens
our minds to new things we never thought possible. College education is essential not because it
guarantees success but because knowledge is a driving force in getting ahead in life, no matter what
area or aspect an individual is aiming for; after all, it's been said time and time again that knowledge
is power. Furthermore, the United States of America is a superpower recognized amongst many
nations in the world. Other countries look up to America because of its leadership, its democracy,
and its political and economic power. Essentially, America needs to cultivate more leaders because
this generation is teeming with plenty. Rather than regarding the arrival of immigrants as a threat or
a problem, Sandy Baum and Stella M. Flores call attention that "policy makers and educators should
focus on increasing immigrants' participation in postsecondary education to ensure the long–run
strength of the U.S. economy" (1). Moreover, they should not just be regarded as mere cheap labor,
but as people who deserves the benefits this country has to offer. However, it does not grant the

Marketing strategies
Marketing strategy is defined by David Aaker as a process that can allow an organization to
concentrate its resources on the optimal opportunities with the goals of increasing sales and
achieving a sustainable competitive advantage.[1] Marketing strategy includes all basic and long–
term activities in the field of marketing that deal with the analysis of the strategic initial situation of
a company and the formulation, evaluation and selection of market–oriented strategies and therefore
contribute to the goals of the company and its marketing objectives.[2]
Types of strategies
Marketing strategies may differ depending on the unique situation of the individual business.

There are also corporate strategy concepts like:
Andrews' "SWOT analysis"
"Although widely used in marketing strategy, SWOT (also known as TOWS) Analysis originated in
corporate strategy. The SWOT concept, if not the acronym, is the work of Kenneth R. Andrews who
is credited with writing the text portion of the classic: Business Policy: Text and Cases (Learned et
al., 1965)" (41).
Ansoff's "growth strategies"
"The most well–known, and least often attributed, aspect of Igor Ansoff's Growth Strategies in the
marketing literature is the term 'product–market. ' The product–market concept results from Ansoff
juxtaposing new and existing products with new and existing markets in a two by two matrix" (41–
42).
Porter's "generic strategies"
Porter generic strategies – strategy on the dimensions of strategic scope and strategic strength.
Strategic scope refers to the market penetration while strategic strength refers to the firm's
sustainable competitive advantage. The generic strategy framework (porter 1984) comprises two

According to Shaw, Eric (2012). Marketing Strategy: From the Origin of the Concept to the
Development of a Conceptual Framework. Journal of Historical Research in Marketing., there is a
framework for marketing strategies.
Market introduction strategies
"At introduction, the marketing strategist has two principle strategies to choose from: penetration or

Market growth strategies
"In the early growth stage, the marketing manager may choose from two additional strategic
alternatives: segment expansion (Smith, Ansoff) or brand expansion (Borden, Ansoff, Kerin and

of different ways of answering that question, but the most common gives four answers:
Horizontal integration

Diversification
Intensification
These ways of growth are termed as organic growth. Horizontal growth is whereby a firm grows
towards acquiring other businesses that are in the same line of business for example a clothing retail

expansion. Vertical integration can be forward or backward. Forward integration is whereby a firm

Backward integration is whereby a firm grows towards its source of supply for example a food

Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. said, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation
where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character,"
("Martin Luther King Jr. Quotes"). In perhaps, one of the most famous speeches of humanity, Martin
Luther King, Jr's. "I Have A Dream" speech had one main point; that all deserve to be equal.
Unfortunately, King's dream hasn't been reached yet, and African–Americans are still discriminated
against and judged unfairly. According to the U.S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission,
racial discrimination is the act of treating someone differently or unfairly because of race
("Race/Color Discrimination"). Martin Luther King Jr. believed that all people should be treated the
same regardless of ethnicity. Therefore, American society should care about racial discrimination
because the rate of African–Americans in jail is much higher than whites, innocent African–
Americans have been killed by police without reason, and African–Americans are often profiled by
the police.
The act of racial discrimination, unfortunately, occurs today all over America. Racial discrimination
occurs to many ethnicities, one of the more common ethnicities it occurs to are: African–Americans,
Hispanics, and Asians. People of these ethnicities are then treated differently, due to the fact that
they look different. The act of racial discrimination can occur anywhere and at any time. It can be
seen as something

The, By John C. Holt, Ivan Illich, And John Taylor Gatto
Popular books on homeschooling include such authors as John C. Holt, Ivan Illich, and John Taylor
Gatto, among many others. Raymond Moore and John Holt, having written on the benefits of home
educating in the 1960s, are often referred to as the fathers of the modern homeschooling movement.
The dichotomous influences these two men had on the developing movement will soon become
evident. Dr. Raymond and Dorothy Moore developed a homeschooling philosophy in the late 1960s
and 1970s based on a balance of academics and work/service. Their Christian faith informed their
ideas, a prominent idea being that formal education should not begin before age 8 or 10. The Moore
's are best known "for their emphasis on the philosophy that children, especially boys, need
individualized attention, chiefly between the ages of 5 and 10."1 John C. Holt was an American
teacher who became increasingly disenfranchised with the educational system. He initially
advocated for school reform, but as he observed young children learning and shared these anecdotal
observations in How Children Learn in 1967 (revised in 1983) and How Children Fail in 1964
(revised in 1982), he increasingly promoted homeschooling as an alternative to schools. He founded
Growing Without Schooling magazine, the first homeschooling magazine in 1977, primarily with
the intent to connect homeschooling families around North America with one another. John Holt
coined the term "unschooling" for the child–led approach to

Capital Punishment : A System With Flaws

Capital Punishment: A System with Flaws
Introduction The death penalty in America has been declining: despite the diminished use, flaws are
more apparent than ever. Some of these are racial bias and the execution of innocent people. With a
topic like capital punishment the information available can be overwhelming, with as much
information that is out there. The words capital punishment and death penalty often have strong
emotional opinions, due to being a controversial topic that so many people have different views on.
History of the Death Penalty in America Americas use of the death penalty was influenced by
Britain 's laws of capital punishment. The first recorded execution was that of Captain George
Kendall in Jamestown Colony of Virginia in 1608, for spying for the Spanish Government (Death
Penalty Information Center). Laws about capital punishment was different depending on the colony.
In North Carolina both harboring slaves and inciting slaves to insurrection were punishable by
death. Virginia sentences sometimes depended on rather the offender was white or black, there were
five capital crimes for white people and about seventy for black people (Constanzo, 1997). In 1767
Cesare Beccaria theorized that there wasn 't a justification for the state to take someones life, giving
abolitionists a voice, which was the abolition of the death penalty in Austria and Tuscany, Beccaria
influenced Americas as well. The first attempted reforms of the death

Analysis Of ' Where I 'm Calling From ' By Raymond Carver

English Literature: Critical Thinking and Composition
Prof. Jennifer Smith
Where I'm Calling From Analysis "Where I'm Calling From" by Raymond Carver is a short story
about a man's struggle with Alcoholism, and his encounters at a drying–out facility or treatment
center. The story itself seems very straight forward in the way it's presented, 3rd person perspective,
narrative writing style, realism (ENotes.com), but in actuality there's a lot more to the story. The
story displays numerous themes such as the narrators own self–destruction, his fight to overcome his
addiction, and his possible feelings of regret and responsibility. Carver also uses tone, imagery, and
symbolism to take the audience to places they might not experience in their own life. This short
story by Raymond Carver is worth analyzing because there's much more to it than what is on the
surface, from the numerous themes presented throughout the story, to the use of imagery and
symbolism to drive the story through its stages. In order to analyze the story it would help to have a
guide on what is going to be explained in this paper. The first part of the paper talks about themes,
some of these themes can be easily over looked since there is layer upon layers. The second part,
will explain the use of tone that helps sets the stage, and the mood of the whole story. The use of
imagery is present as well, for example the use of words like dry and wet, can be found when

Intellectual Property: Information Must be Freely...
"Ask your average high school kids if they use Kazaa, and the answer is a resounding 'duh,'" (137)
according to Jennifer Peloso. Kazza, BitTorrent, and other technologies like it allow the sharing of
information, all for free. There is a stark contrast in the availability of information today than there
was just a few decades ago, due in large part to the internet. On the internet, all information is free.
Capitalism is based on the idea that to be successful, you need to have something that others want;
something that is worth money. The internet made information a commodity, bringing an end to an
era where in order to create and access content, you must have money. Over the past decade and a

In order to examine the issue of copyright, we first must define what intellectual property is. Simply
put, intellectual property is something you create that is unique from anything else. According to
Sandip Patel, an intellectual property lawyer that I interviewed, "Intellectual property is often
defined by inventions and expressive works (musical, theatrical, visual) that have an existence
separable from a physical article. In the patent law context, for example, it is typically defined as a
right to exclude others from making, using, or selling an article or process." This means that this
essay, for example, is copyrightable. It also means that I could prevent anyone from using this essay
for their own purposes. Raymond Kurz, author of Internet and the Law, defines intellectual property
as "the product of one's intellectual endeavors. For example, inventing a new and improved widget
would be an intellectual endeavor," (1). This is considering that you have the rights to the old
widget. Here lies the problem; when should I be able to improve on the old widget? Do I need to
pay the original creator of the widget? Also, who owns the rights to said widget, the manufacturer or
the creator? Questions like these prompted the first copyright law. The Statute of Anne, created in
1710 under the rule of Queen Anne of Great Britain, was made to protect the creators

(Lindop83) This got authorities very annoyed at King because they did not want change and King
protest did it constitutionally legal. As a result police started arresting King for trivial reasons such
as doing 30mph in a 25 zone, sitting in white places, civil rights marches, boycotting the busses
etceteras. In all he went to jail over 30 times. (Lindop 82) It didn't stop there the FBI or at least the
head of the FBI, Jay Edgar Hoover, even hated King. "Nobody hated Martin Luther King more than
J. Edgar Hoover" (Clarke 255) "King was well aware that the FBI was, as he put it, 'out to break
me.'" (Melanson 134) That was obvious being that the FBI used many man–hours in harassing King.
King life was threatened by the FBI about 50 times and harassed enough to literally have entire
books on the subject. A primary example of this is when the FBI dubbed a phony tape of King with
another women and used to blackmail King into committing suicide. In January of 1968, three
months before the assassination, an internal memo was distributed by Hoover calling for, "the
Removal of King from the national scene." After all the harassment King endured he still refused to
retaliate in any illegal acts which continued to infuriate authorities.

Excessive Suspension of Disbelief: Raymond Jean's La Lectrice
When I begin a class in fiction or poetry, I always talk for a few minutes about the various purposes
of literature: escape, didactic, and interpretive. I tell my students that escape literature is a wonderful
way to forget our problems for a while (less dangerous than drugs, alcohol, careless sex, or driving),
but that escape literature can be harmful if one expects one's personal life to be as exciting,
successful, or romantic as that in escape fiction. As Meg Ryan's friend says to her in Sleepless in

When one hears or reads the word "cat," one mentally pictures a cat. At this level the reader
recognizes what the words and sentences signify, but perceives only that which is specified. When
one reads "See
Jane. See Jane run," one "sees" Jane and the running, but may not think of Jane's surroundings or
world. All of the lectrice's listeners respond at this level. These first three levels are the ones by
which we learn about words and how to read when we are children and the ones by which we learn
to access a foreign language. These three steps are essential to one's being able to read and
understand a text.
The fourth level involves filling in or constructing the whole picture of Jane running–on a sidewalk,
by the grass, in front of a white house, etc. (When I talk to my students about this level
I say, "A cat ran up the tree" and then ask several of them the size and color of the cat, the kind of

this level, the reader's experience is like looking through a window at a scene or incident.

David Jones's The Great War And Modern Memory
In his The Great War and Modern Memory, Paul Fussell quotes Theodor Ropp when he asserts that
while "[t]he American Civil war was the first [war]...'in which really large numbers of literate men
fought as common soldiers,'" by the outbreak of the First World War in "1914, it was possible for
soldiers to be not merely literate but vigorously literary" (157). He continues, arguing that because
"the belief in the powers of classical and English literature was still extremely strong" in England,
allusions to the magna opera of the English canon appear throughout the works of Great War poets.
One such poet was David Jones, whose deeply allusive novel–length poem of 1937, In Parenthesis,
incorporates elements of the English canon from its very founding in Anglo–Saxon Britain, through
Malory and Shakespeare, and into the nineteenth century with Romantics like Coleridge. ... Show

As Anna Johnson explains, "Old English literature formed part of what Jones called his 'materia
poetica' even in his early work, at a time when his knowledge of it was certainly limited" (89).
Indeed, though she admits that Jones "would never learn to read [Old English poetry] in its original
form," Johnson finds repeated evidence of three Old English poems throughout In Parenthesis: The
Dream of the Rood, The Battle of Maldon, and The Battle of Brunanburh (94). Johnson's critique is
thus a useful point of entry to Jones' often difficult poetry: she notes, for example, how "Jones's
engagement with Old English sources becomes both a part of this modern reality, and a heroic act of
remembrance in the face of an increasingly mechanized world, forgetful of its history"

The Cost Of Free Will
Eric Fetsch
Mrs. Sturges
AP Literature
September 14, 2016
The Cost of Free Will; Within the Human Condition Temptation, as an omnipresent force, possesses
the capacity to dictate one 's life. Drawing the line between good and evil, these desires for
destruction have the ability to take utter control or linger within the shadows. Manifesting from
within, or as an exterior component, the darkness within feeds on the destruction of humanity,
stealing peoples ' innocence. It is within the human condition to formulate decisions and to
purposefully chose between right and wrong. Character is defined by the actions of humanity
including their ability to choose, and take accountability for such choices. Within Harper Lee 's To
Kill a Mockingbird and William Golding 's Lord of the Flies, the authors explore the essence of free
will and its ramification amongst both good and bad characters. Humanity is ultimately born with
sin, but is not bound by it. Free will elevates humans beyond their primitive state. In To Kill a
Mockingbird, in spite of popular belief that "Atticus Finch won 't win" the case, he still willingly
represented Tom Robinson, a black male, in a rape case against Mayella Ewell (Lee 289). Atticus
struggled to maintain his ethical ideals as he is questioned by Scout; "if you shouldn 't be defendin '
him, then why are you doin ' it?" Atticus retorted with "If I didn 't, I couldn 't hold up my head in
town, I couldn 't even tell you or Jem not to do something again"

The Significance of the Open-Source Act and Linux Essay
The Significance of the Open–Source Act and Linux
In the 1980's hardly anyone knew what a DOS attack was, most people hadn't ever seen a computer.
There was one great OS for companies back then, UNIX. Unix was commercially made, very
expensive, but was a very strong Operating System. Because of the price of equipment, many people
wouldn't get into computers, but there was no reason to. Nothing of great significance was stored on
computers.
By 1985, computers hit the mainstream, providing many universities with links to each other and
their libraries. This all came along with the invention of the Internet. Suddenly there was a great
amount of information available to those who had access. There were many people who wanted to

Before long, every hacker and their brother knew how to find a big error in the Unix code on any
server. They exploited the servers with many different attacks, mostly being troublesome for no
reason. Phone lines and networks were taken down left and right, and many devices came about to
help deal with the phone system. Many phreakers had developed boxes, named by color, that would
do things to the phone network, just by holding it up to the reciever to play recorded tones. There
was the red box: A box that could get you free long distance calls. There was a beige box: A box that
would make any calls you made untraceable by the FBI or "Mamma Bell," a nickname for the
Owner of Packard Bell, a large phone company.
With the growth of the hackers, many new ways of protecting your systems had to come about.
Routers, firewalls, and many other types of security precautions came about. They prevented many
hackers from breaking in, but all it took is one to find a way around, and everyone would know. But
with the FBI and Mamma Bell handing out arrest warrants left and right, many hackers gave up on
their former lifestyles.
For the companies and the government, everything was taking a turn for the best, until 1996. In
1996 Linus Horswald released Linux under the Open–Source Act. He originally made it for a
calculator for his grandfather, but it advanced into much more. By the time he was done with

Pros And Cons Of Miscarriage Of Justice
As we all may realize once a crime is committed the suspect is charged and then sentenced based off
the judge's decision. As we recall a crime is an unlawful act punishable by a state or other authority.
In other words, those who commit minor or major crimes get incarcerated depending how serious is
crime. Also, in some cases suspects receive supervised probation and must be watched periodically
by an assigned officer. It is understandable that those who commit crimes are held accountable for
their actions. Over the past decade families have been destroyed after knowing their significant
other will be in jail for a long period of time based off a wrongful conviction. Over the past years
victims have been incarcerated wrongfully on charges such as rape or murder. In many cases the
victims were coerced to speak, confessions were manipulated to make the detective look good, or
the officer yelled and smuggled their face so that the victim can forcefully say anything. A wrongful
conviction known as a miscarriage of justice primarily is the conviction and punishment of a person
for a crime they did not commit. During the late years of 1980 it was truly a year of miscarriage of

Culture or Civilization taken in its wide ethnographic sense is that complex whole which includes
knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom, and any other capabilities and habits required by man as
a member of a society.
–E.B. Tylor
In America, there are two cultural traditions that have blended together to form the alloy that is
American culture or the American system of "knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom..." The
first cultural tradition, European, is widely thought to have been the dominant culture in influencing
American culture. We think that our ancestors brought the European way of life over to the New
World and the old simply evolved a little bit. However, the idea that European ... Show more content

Old World Oats, New World Potatoes, and The Big Mac
Before the introduction of New World foodstuffs, Europeans subsisted on the few grains they could
grow and the cattle they could produce. For example my Scottish ancestors', diet varied with what
they could produce in their part of Scotland. In the early sixteenth century, Scotland, as a whole, was
abundant with cattle and small game. Nicander Nucius in 1545 stated that the Scots had so "many
oxen, and so many flocks of sheep that wonder arises in the beholders on the account of the
multitude of them", adding that they "abound in butter, cheese, and milk" (Gibson and Smout 63).
As a result of this abundance, the Scots of this era consumed a diet consisting primarily animal
products being supplemented by the most widely grown local grain: oats. However, at the end of the
sixteenth century, the Scottish government became concerned about the possibility of problems if
the animal population in Scotland were to be compromised. To prevent the animal population from
being compromised, the government sometimes rationed the amount meat that could be eaten. The
Scottish government also enacted rations on meat consumption when the oat harvest was low.

The Leadership Of The Enron Corporation
Thank you, Devin, for explaining the role leadership plays in organizations and specifically at
Enron.
Leadership of the Enron corporation was a group of high payed executives. Their mission statement
claimed they "treat others as we would like to be treated ourselves....We do not tolerate abusive or
disrespectful treatment. Ruthlessness, callousness and arrogance don 't belong here." (Revolutionary
Worker 2002) However, "as in other aspects of Enron's culture, the appearance did not match
reality." (Stephens and Behr 2002)
Enron could become an "energy broker" in lieu of company delivering energy with the deregulation
of electrical power in 1988. "Deregulation allowed Enron to be creative – for the first time, a
company that had been required to "operate within the lines" could innovate and test limits." (Sims
and Brinkmann 2003) Enron went from a company with humble beginnings that has faced difficult
years to an organization "where a handful of highly paid executives were able to pocket millions..."
(Sims and Brinkmann 2003) With deregulation and the use of mark–to–market accounting Enron
was able to legally make millions while being unethical.
Ken Lay and Jeffrey Skilling were the team known as The Smartest Guys in the Room. This
powerhouse team of two people coordinated their work to meet a shared common objective. That
objective was to make money. This objected created a culture that was one of "intense pressure to
keep Enron stocks on an ever–rising curve." (Stephens

Legalization of Marijuana Essay
Legalization of Marijuana
"The only way in which a human being can make some approach to knowing the whole of any
subject is by hearing what can be said about it by persons of every variety of opinion and studying
all modes in which in can be looked at by every character of mind. No wise man ever acquired his
wisdom in any mode but this.' – John Stuart Mill" (Mill. 7). The topic of legalizing marijuana is a
very conservational issue in American politics today. There are many good arguments both for and
against legalization. But most important is that all of these arguments are based on facts.
The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937, the act that effectively made marijuana illegal in the US, was based
on the fact that "marijuana caused ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

not only eroding our civil liberties but is also wasting our tax money at a rate of almost "18 billion
dollars a year"(Lynch.153). Moreover, more than "300,000 people a year are arrested on marijuana
charges, contributing to the clogging of our courts and overcrowding prisons." (Grinspoon. 142) All
this is also costing tax payers' money on top of the 18 billion a year. The war on drugs is a war
within our homes, a war between our friends and family.
From the early 1970's until present we have heard that marijuana "destroyed brain cells, caused
psychoses, lowered testosterone levels ad sperm counts, led to breast development in males... caused
chromosome breakage and birth defects." (Ginspoon. 139) However not one of these claims could
ever be proven and more and more people have grown to resent the governments deceiving
propaganda. So far, "not a single case of lung cancer, emphysema, or other significant pulmonary
pathology attributable to cannabis use has been reported." (Grinspoon. 139)

Essay about Senator Joseph McCarthy and Communism
Beginning in the early 1950s, Senator Joseph McCarthy released a monumental rampage across the
United States. For fear of governmental infiltration by Communists, an outbreak of accusations
swept the nation as a result of the Wisconsin senator, and helped create what is known as the second
Red Scare ("McCarthyism") Joseph McCarthy was born November 14, 1908 in Grand Chute,
Wisconsin to dairy farmers, lived an average life until the age of sixteen. At this point in time,
McCarthy dropped out of school until 1929, when he decided to go back and finish high school.

broadened the reach the Senator had, leading to a fast up rise for the Senator. As time went on, the
initial list of 100 that the Senator had naming all the communists would fluctuate at one point
decreasing to 57, and later increasing to 81 (Ferrell 10–11). Despite the numerous accusations,
McCarthy is re–elected as Senator in the election of 1952. Just a year later the Republican Party
took over Congress, and McCarthy gained the position as chairman of the Senate Permanent
Investigations Committee. With the position came great power, which McCarthy used to further
accuse officials of Communist activities, and attacked the army in a search for potential members of
the Communist party ("Joseph R. McCarthy). Once the accusations based on almost nonexistent
evidence became too much for the American people to further bear, the senatorial colleagues began
to investigate the rogue Senator and his findings. The investigation was a televised broadcast of
thirty six days' worth or hearings of the Senator. As the American public viewed the hearings, the
exposure of the Senator began to cause doubts by the public viewers of the program. Coming to a
head on June 9, 1954, it took only six months for Senate to vote to censure McCarthy. The final vote

SIGPLAN conference on Object–oriented programming" focuses mainly on the nature and growth
of programming–language design. The speaker started his lecture by giving insights into the use and
nature of programming–languages. He started with examples of English language comparing with a
programming–language. He talked about the set of constraints showing one may use any word of
single syllable. The speaker also demonstrates it can be confining to expressing yourself when you
don't have access to an extensive vocabulary. If someone wishes to use the longer words, one must
define them using only such words have one syllable Guy Steele shows with his talk is that small
language restricts the expressiveness of thoughts. You must define a lot of new words to express
your thoughts and ideas clearly. .He gives many more interesting points how languages should be
grown. He discusses that how programmer needs to enhance the ability to expand the vocabularies
of languages that feels weakened. The speaker ends his lecture after explaining the main goal of
programming language design by giving various examples. [1][2][5]

An Overview of Postmodernism Essay
The political climate at the beginning of the 1940's and the changes taking place all around the
world drastically influenced the face of contemporary society. The invasion of Poland by Germany
on 1st of September 1939 was the first stone thrown in the face of freedom of expression and liberty
out of the many that followed for the next decades. The dawn of the Second World War was one of
the premises that forced many European artists, pioneers par excellence in their field, through their
French or German inherited status, to immigrate across the ocean. Due to the exile, the art centre
also moved overseas, from Paris to New York, offering a new opportunity for American art to be the
initiator in what was generally accepted as the new ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This description is trying to clearly position postmodernism in a specific time frame and outline its
main characteristics. However, when consulting the Macmillan Dictionary (2010) the description
offered is significantly less conclusive:
"ideas, attitudes, or styles of art, literature, or thinking that have developed after modernism, often
as a reaction against "
The main accent is set on the chronological aspect of postmodernism and its logical and historical
flow offering the reader not enough information to identify a clear period or any particular feature.
Only by comparing the two definitions, a very small part of the available explanations on the
subject, and at the same time reading them together one can identify one of the main components of
the movement: diversity in all its aspects. The difference in these definitions is not just a simple
coincidence and should be taken as a figure of speech for the description of the entire period. During
this time critics and writers, artists and architects etc. have tried to find a proper explanation for the
changes they were being part of, concretised in what became known as Postmodernism.
During the 1960s 'attacks' started appearing against the elitism shown by modernism. One of the
first voices pointing at modernism's faults was the poet Karl Shapiro , who in 1959 in an article for

The True Value Of College Athletes. College Student-Athletes
The True Value of College Athletes College student–athletes have some of the most time consumed

there has been an increased discussion on if college athletes should be paid. With increasing

Johnson and Acquaviva make the point that between weight training sessions, film room, practice,
individual workouts, travel, and finally competition, these "student–athletes" cannot feel much like
students." (Brill 7) This further validates the point that college athletes should be paid if they are
spending so much time on athletics, and helping the school earn money along the way. If college
athletes were paid, it would motivate them competitively as well because the revenue the program
brings in is partially based off performance for signing TV deals and getting bids to postseason
games that earn more money for the school. The more successful a team is, the more money they
will be able to negotiate for in TV deals and the more likely they get bids to play in post season
games to generate extra revenue. Universities also make a fortune off of selling Since the players are
the source for this revenue by playing in these games, they would be even more competitively
driven to perform their very best because as a result they would get paid more money and generate
more money for the school at the same time. A win–win scenario for both the student athletes and
their respective universities. Many of these college student–athletes come from low income homes
as well. The argument could be made that if the university is able to help these athletes families with
a form of pay without making significant sacrifice, then they

Public Policy Essay: Drug Policy
Public Policy is the righteous guide to action taken by the decision–making executive branches of
the state with regard to a class of issues that are reliable with law and institutional levies. The basis
of public policy is self–ruled by national legal laws and guidelines. Further substrates contain both
judicial explanations and regulations in which it becomes official by legislature. While dealing with
issues that concern public policies in the United States, policymakers overlook a certain bill and
have the right to enforce the law or veto it.
One particular Policy that is popular today is the Drug policy of the United States. This particular
public policy is Drug Policy of the United States. It all started when usage of drugs has increased in
all categories since the beginning of the exclusion on January 20, 1920. Also. Drug usage reached a
certain peak level when the usage of Opium started after the Harrison Act of 1914 was heartened.
Between 1972 and 1988, cocaine usage more than five times the regular limit, in which it introduced
two popular drugs: amphetamines and ecstasy which have shown similar improvements.
The drug policy of the United States was built by The Office of National Drug Control Policy,
which came from a former cabinet–level section of the president's Executive Office. This action led
to the establishment of the Anti–Drug Abuse Act of 1988. The goals of this program are to establish

Mystery story or mystery, fictional genre in which the foundations of a mysterious happening,
frequently a crime, is regularly discovered by the hero or the heroine; this is achieved through a
combination of intelligence, inventiveness, the rational interpretation pf evidence, and from time to

Gun Control Laws Should be Tightened Essay
According to James Madison in his Federalist Papers, "Americans have the right and advantage of
being armed – unlike the citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust the people
with arms," (Raymond). Madison may be correct about Americans having more rights than many
other countries, but sometimes the government has too much trust in the American people. Taking
away all privately owned guns does not solve anything because doing so would consequentially
create a communist state. Instead, the best solution is to control who buys guns and for what
purpose. There are over 283 million licensed guns in the U.S. (Herbert 1), which does not include

Ironically enough, white, southern men are one of the highest groups of people to own guns (White
3). As the technology, build, and practicality of the hand gun changed over the past couple of
hundred years, so has the increased want and demand. Of course, as more people started owning
guns, the crime rate and deaths by gun shot up. Basically, it used to be every man for himself. As the
government started worrying farther than just setting the rules but actually having people abide by
the rules, laws and restrictions were set to try to regulate who owned guns and why they would use
them. In 1934, Congress first started regulating the sale of automatic firearms. Not until four years
later did the government think to make it federal law to require gun sellers to be licensed and to
prohibit felons from purchasing them (Newsbatch 1). Even with rules that shops were supposed to
follow, there are loopholes. The problem with some people in the U.S. is they will go buy guns
because they have no criminal record, and then sell it to someone who is willing to pay them for the
gun. Different laws over the years, still standing and also withdrawn, have spelled out different ideas
of regulations, "The Gun Control Act of 1968 regulated imported guns, expanded gun–dealer

The Common Core State Standard For Language Arts
To Kill a Mockingbird: Modern Day Parallels, Evolution of Compassion, and Guide to Leadership
The Common Core State Standard for Language Arts, which is the current standards observed by
North Carolina, determines the particular proficiency students need in order to be prepared for their
academic and professional futures according to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
They add that some of these skills include, but are not limited to critical thinking skills, literacy
skills and analytical skills. Current process, for the most part, do help establish a framework for
keeping materials relevant to the maturity level of students. However, if students or parents feel as if
their values or beliefs don't line up with current standards of education, complications can arise.
Complications such as the censorship of beneficial literature can have negative consequences in
society. In agreement with Judy Blume, " If every individual with an agenda had his/her way, the
shelves in the school library would be close to empty." Although there are many books that have
either been banned or challenged, according to The Committee on Intellectual Freedom of the
American Library Association, To Kill a Mockingbird is listed as "being among the 10 most
frequently challenged books" (Karolides, Bald, and Sova 483). Naturally, To Kill a Mockingbird's

for immediate feedback and adjustment of thought. Students talking together provide for input and

their own, whether they disagree, or partially agree. Students have an opportunity to speak their

The Soviet Union And The United States
Due to the onset of the Cold War and the early 1960s, the popular and political climate in the United
States changed. The relationship between the Soviet Union and the United States was directed by
ideological, political and technological factors. The rivalry between the two powers rooted from
their contrasting ideological principles since the United States was a democratic republic where the
people believed that every citizen had equal representation in the government and the Soviet Union
was a communist nation. The US embodied the principles of a democratic nation believing in the
ideals of "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness" as well as having an economy that was based on
capitalism. In contrast to the ideology of the US, the Soviet Union fell under communist rule during
the Russian Revolution of 1917, which was based on the idea that all assets should be owned by the
government and then divided among the citizens of the nation. The Soviet Union took communism a
step further as the many of the leaders were totalitarian during the 20th century, meaning that "all
power was in the hands of the ruler". In 1946, Churchill declared the separation between the east
and west by saying that an iron curtain had descended through the middle of Europe (Churchill
Delivers Iron Curtain Speech 1). Even though the Soviets and the US fought together in WWII, the
eastern communistic ideology had clashed with western democratic principles. Furthermore, the two

The consumer society of the 1950s was presented with machines such as fruit juicers, coffee makers,

this debate is the concept of free information. What is information anyway? Can it really be free?
The Internet is a complex series of systems of information in which the circulation and distribution

Information, in and of itself should be available to anyone, in theory. Yet there is the other side, in

Linux And Microsoft Operating Systems Essay
Abstract
Linux and Microsoft operating systems have been developed and marketed in two very different
ways. Microsoft has become synonymous with monopoly and substandard software, while Linux is
based on free, open source and the concept of open standards, full disclosure and sharing. Microsoft
attempts to discourage consumers from using the Linux solution by suggesting that the operating
system is less than perfect, yet it remains blind to its own operating system's problems existent
within Windows 95/98 and Windows NT.
It's a well–known fact that Microsoft dominate the software market despite these facts. Are they
operating within legal and ethical boundaries? And is it possible that they could fall from grace
because of this?

While companies like IBM, Oracle, and Netscape have begun to integrate their business model with
open source, many traditional software companies continue to focus on purely proprietary solutions.
In the web server space, Microsoft's complete denial of the open source phenomenon is almost
amusing. The Apache web server has more than 50% of the web serving market according the
Netcraft survey (http://www.netcraft.com/survey,07/01/02).
When you look at advertisements for Microsoft's Internet Information Server (IIS) you see that they
own over half the market in web serving – over half the commercial server market. When compared
against competitors like Netscape and Lotus, they have a substantial edge in

The Beetles In The 1960's
Great music can sometimes can turn just an ordinary day into something magical, spiritual even. The
effects music has on the human mind, can spread further; right through our genetic code and
throughout our bodies. With all the good that can come with music, negative effects are not too far
behind. Music has been the center focal point for parents and politicians alike to use it as a
scapegoat to help push their political and parent agenda. To help mold children and adolescents into
something they were never meant to be. From the controversy surrounding The Beetles in the
1960's, to the force suicide allegations of heavy metal band Judas Priest in the last 80's and even as
recent as the Columbine Massacre in Littleton, Co in 1999 that was blamed ... Show more content

If anyone tries to link gangster rap with gun violence will inevitably look within the United States. A
country where drive–by shooting, street killings, violent rap lyrics and the death of 3 of the most
profound artists to grace the hip hop scene have graced the cover of newspapers and made headlines
for the better part of 20 years. I honestly believe that gangster rap was just a reaction to the violent
nature of society, and not the cause of it. Former SLOTUS (Second Lady of the United States) led
the field of politicians when she rose to rose to prominence for her work with the Parents Music
Resource Center (PMRC). Voicing her strong opinions and advocating censorship, for the labeling
of record covers of releases featuring profane language, especially in the heavy metal and hip hop
genres. The committee formed in 1985 with the stated goal of increasing parental control over the
access of children to music deemed to have violent, drug–related or sexual themes via labeling
albums with parental advisory stickers. Many groups answered back with criticism and parodies
from bands like NOFX, Danzig, Ice–T and Megadeth. Lead guitarist and co–founded Dave
Mustaine stated in an interview with Spin magazine that "Hook in Mouth" declaims censorship and
the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC). Mustaine elaborated that the lyrics were aimed at those
who were "f*cking around with our constitutional rights and trying to

Where The Wild Things Are By Maurice Sendak
1. Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak is an exuberant picture book which will make it a
fun and exciting read. The compressed language will guide children easily throughout the book.
Sendak promotes a touching message of unconditional love, a message that even if one misbehaves,
there will be supper waiting on the table (Max does get sent to his room, but no matter how much he
has misbehaved, his mother will always love him and cherish him). Sendak also dives into deeper
psychological emotions . Max might be seen and chastised as a "wild thing" by his mother, his
emotional actions are described as an integral part of his being, maybe not quite appropriate, but
also not completely inappropriate, rather as a living, breathing part of Max 's being. It is these
emotions, these feelings that are the impetus to Max 's adventures in the realm of the Wild Things.
2. The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle captures young readers with its vivid and colorful
collage illustrations and its deceptively hopeful story. With its die–cut pages and finger–sized holes
to explore, this is a satisfying book for children. The main character has to overcome his ravenous
appetite on his journey to become a butterfly will simply entice children and hopefully inspire them.
3. The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg is a book filled with pure magic and wonder. The moral
of the story is to dive in and believe, leaving reality behind. This book will not only let children
indulge in the

Man the Hunter Revisited
Man the Hunter: Revisited In 1966, a group of about fifty anthropologists met in Chicago for a
conference that would later known as the "Man the Hunter" meeting. The meeting contrasted with
earlier scholarship and presented a Hollywood approach to the topic of early man, one where our
ancestors were strong, powerful, and in control of their environment. Anthropologists Sherwood L.
Washburn and C.S. Lancaster (1968), both present at the conference claimed, "our intellect,
interests, emotions, and basic social life–all are evolutionary products of the success of the hunting
adaptation". The book Man the Hunter that emerged from the conference forced a re–evaluation of
human subsistence strategies and the role of the hunter in human ... Show more content on

Additionally, the sexual division of labor was given more attention and there was recognition of the
importance of the female contribution given to sustaining early modern human society. As a result of
the research, the gatherer female emerged and in many ways surpassed the male hunter as the
foundation of early modern human society. The female gatherer trumped the male hunter.
Ultimately, the work of the feminist anthropologists was significant because it discredited the male–
centric theory of the 1960's, emasculated the role of man, but provided a more balanced and accurate
perspective regarding the role of women in early human society. Progressing into the modern era,
research has again refocused the academic microscope on the once chastised 'man the hunter' theory.
Contrasting with earlier scholarship, Michael P. Richards and Erik Trinkhaus (2009) proved
Neanderthals and early modern humans relied on meat and hunting for subsistence. They did so
through comparative isotopic analysis of nitrogen and carbon isotope values to compare protein
consumption between early modern humans, Neanderthals, and local fauna. For example, the Oase 1
(the oldest directly dated modern human in Europe) has a nitrogen level that is 10.8% higher than
the ibex and 8.0% higher than the red deer.

Effectiveness Of The No Child Left Behind Act Of 2001 (...
Introduction This study will focus on the effectiveness of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001
(NCLB). The NCLB Act of 2001 was a reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education
Act of 1965 (ESEA) (www.newamerica.org). The Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965
was a Great Society program that allocated federal funds for education and looked to hold schools
accountable (www2.ed.gov). The NCLB Act of 2001 was passed through Congress in 2001 with
bipartisan support and greatly increased the Federal Government's role in the education system and
almost 95,000 public schools to include standardized testing and holding these schools accountable
for student proficiency (www.newamerica.org). Data for elementary and secondary ... Show more

Are these students ready for post–secondary education and did NCLB assist in that readiness?
NCLB Review The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 was signed into law by then President George
W. Bush on January 8, 2002. The statement of purpose for NCLB begins: The purpose of this title is
to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high–quality
education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging State academic achievement
standards and state academic assessments (115 STAT. 1439). Lee and Jacob (2011) write that one of
the major goals of NCLB was to make every student proficient in mathematics and reading by
2013–2014. The NCLB most notable requirements were for standardized testing and holding
schools accountable through public reporting and sanctions. The law required that states test once a
year in reading and mathematics in third through eighth grades as well as once in tenth through
twelfth grades to continually monitor change (Lee and Jacob, 2011). Under NCLB, schools were
required to make adequate yearly progress (AYP), which was an increase in proficiency chosen by
the state in order to achieve its final goal of every student being proficient. There was a six year plan
for schools to make improvements inside of NCLB where the sanctions started fairly reasonable and
grew in

Multilingualism And European Commission

  • 1. Multilingualism and European Commission About 250 million years ago, Pangæa the supercontinent was split up and eventually settled on the current continental configuration. As civilization flourished, the inhabitants developed their own language and culture on each continent. However, trading and getting along with the neighboring communities forced many groups to learn more than their mother tongue. This pragmatic use of multilingualism is especially evident in Sub–Saharan Africa. Today, the benefits of mastering more than one language has influenced other continents such as Europe to incorporate multilingualism into its society. Consequently, in the world's population, multilingual speakers outnumber monolingual spealers. Despite being so close to Quebec and Mexico, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Consequently, multilingualism can unlock the full potential of the single market in terms of better jobs and prosperity (European Commission). Given the appropriate environment, people tend to pick up a new language easily at a young age. Multilingualism doesn't require complete fluency in another language, or the ability to speak two unrelated languages. The benefits of multilingualism are so stupendous that they extend outside the area of language. Children and elders learning a foreign language have been demonstrated to be consistently better able to deal with distractions, like holding two languages concurrently without allowing words and grammar slip from one to another (Bialystok). Multilingual speakers also develop a greater vocabulary size over time (Kosmidis), a markedly better language proficiency in, sensitivity to, and understanding of their mother tongue (Johnson), and have a better ear for listening and sharper memories (Lapkin, Ratte). Furthermore, evidence has shown that skill in several languages fosters creativity and innovation: multilingual people are aware that problems can be tackled in different ways according to different linguistic and cultural backgrounds (European Commission). They can use this ability to find new solutions. Ultimately, United States needs to acknowledge that the social, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Undocumented Children Should Attend College Essay As Americans, we believe that our great country is a land of milk and honey, of open windows and opportunities, and of rights and privileges. With that being said, we all strive to live the American Dream, with some if not most of us, leaving not only our mother country in the process but our comfort zone. The question to ask is, "Is everyone in this nation, legal or illegal, entitled to these blessings bestowed to us by this country?" After all, according to the Declaration of Independence, we as human beings are granted life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (US 1776). Learning not only opens opportunities for us, but it opens our minds to new things we never thought possible. College education is essential not because it guarantees success but because knowledge is a driving force in getting ahead in life, no matter what area or aspect an individual is aiming for; after all, it's been said time and time again that knowledge is power. Furthermore, the United States of America is a superpower recognized amongst many nations in the world. Other countries look up to America because of its leadership, its democracy, and its political and economic power. Essentially, America needs to cultivate more leaders because this generation is teeming with plenty. Rather than regarding the arrival of immigrants as a threat or a problem, Sandy Baum and Stella M. Flores call attention that "policy makers and educators should focus on increasing immigrants' participation in postsecondary education to ensure the long–run strength of the U.S. economy" (1). Moreover, they should not just be regarded as mere cheap labor, but as people who deserves the benefits this country has to offer. However, it does not grant the same opportunities for those ... Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character," ("Martin Luther King Jr. Quotes"). In perhaps, one of the most famous speeches of humanity, Martin Luther King, Jr's. "I Have A Dream" speech had one main point; that all deserve to be equal. Unfortunately, King's dream hasn't been reached yet, and African–Americans are still discriminated against and judged unfairly. According to the U.S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, racial discrimination is the act of treating someone differently or unfairly because of race ("Race/Color Discrimination"). Martin Luther King Jr. believed that all people should be treated the same regardless of ethnicity. Therefore, American society should care about racial discrimination because the rate of African–Americans in jail is much higher than whites, innocent African– Americans have been killed by police without reason, and African–Americans are often profiled by the police. The act of racial discrimination, unfortunately, occurs today all over America. Racial discrimination occurs to many ethnicities, one of the more common ethnicities it occurs to are: African–Americans, Hispanics, and Asians. People of these ethnicities are then treated differently, due to the fact that they look different. The act of racial discrimination can occur anywhere and at any time. • 16. The, By John C. Holt, Ivan Illich, And John Taylor Gatto Popular books on homeschooling include such authors as John C. Holt, Ivan Illich, and John Taylor Gatto, among many others. Raymond Moore and John Holt, having written on the benefits of home educating in the 1960s, are often referred to as the fathers of the modern homeschooling movement. The dichotomous influences these two men had on the developing movement will soon become evident. Dr. Raymond and Dorothy Moore developed a homeschooling philosophy in the late 1960s and 1970s based on a balance of academics and work/service. Their Christian faith informed their ideas, a prominent idea being that formal education should not begin before age 8 or 10. The Moore 's are best known "for their emphasis on the philosophy that children, especially boys, need individualized attention, chiefly between the ages of 5 and 10."1 John C. Holt was an American teacher who became increasingly disenfranchised with the educational system. He initially advocated for school reform, but as he observed young children learning and shared these anecdotal observations in How Children Learn in 1967 (revised in 1983) and How Children Fail in 1964 (revised in 1982), he increasingly promoted homeschooling as an alternative to schools. He founded Growing Without Schooling magazine, the first homeschooling magazine in 1977, primarily with the intent to connect homeschooling families around North America with one another. Capital Punishment : A System With Flaws Hatch 1 Capital Punishment: A System with Flaws Introduction The death penalty in America has been declining: despite the diminished use, flaws are more apparent than ever. Some of these are racial bias and the execution of innocent people. With a topic like capital punishment the information available can be overwhelming, with as much information that is out there. The words capital punishment and death penalty often have strong emotional opinions, due to being a controversial topic that so many people have different views on. History of the Death Penalty in America Americas use of the death penalty was influenced by Britain 's laws of capital punishment. The first recorded execution was that of Captain George Kendall in Jamestown Colony of Virginia in 1608, for spying for the Spanish Government (Death Penalty Information Center). Laws about capital punishment was different depending on the colony. In North Carolina both harboring slaves and inciting slaves to insurrection were punishable by death. Virginia sentences sometimes depended on rather the offender was white or black, there were five capital crimes for white people and about seventy for black people (Constanzo, 1997). In 1767 Cesare Beccaria theorized that there wasn 't a justification for the state to take someones life, giving abolitionists a voice, which was the abolition of the death penalty in Austria and Tuscany, Beccaria influenced Americas as well. Analysis Of ' Where I 'm Calling From ' By Raymond Carver Artapong Intapatana September 16, 2014 English Literature: Critical Thinking and Composition Prof. Jennifer Smith Where I'm Calling From Analysis "Where I'm Calling From" by Raymond Carver is a short story about a man's struggle with Alcoholism, and his encounters at a drying–out facility or treatment center. The story itself seems very straight forward in the way it's presented, 3rd person perspective, narrative writing style, realism (ENotes.com), but in actuality there's a lot more to the story. The story displays numerous themes such as the narrators own self–destruction, his fight to overcome his addiction, and his possible feelings of regret and responsibility. Carver also uses tone, imagery, and symbolism to take the audience to places they might not experience in their own life. This short story by Raymond Carver is worth analyzing because there's much more to it than what is on the surface, from the numerous themes presented throughout the story, to the use of imagery and symbolism to drive the story through its stages. In order to analyze the story it would help to have a guide on what is going to be explained in this paper. The first part of the paper talks about themes, some of these themes can be easily over looked since there is layer upon layers. The second part, will explain the use of tone that helps sets the stage, and the mood of the whole story. The use of imagery is present as well, for example the use of words like dry and wet, can be found when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Kazza, BitTorrent, and other technologies like it allow the sharing of information, all for free. There is a stark contrast in the availability of information today than there was just a few decades ago, due in large part to the internet. On the internet, all information is free. Capitalism is based on the idea that to be successful, you need to have something that others want; something that is worth money. In order to examine the issue of copyright, we first must define what intellectual property is. Simply put, intellectual property is something you create that is unique from anything else. According to Sandip Patel, an intellectual property lawyer that I interviewed, "Intellectual property is often defined by inventions and expressive works (musical, theatrical, visual) that have an existence separable from a physical article. In the patent law context, for example, it is typically defined as a right to exclude others from making, using, or selling an article or process." This means that this essay, for example, is copyrightable. It also means that I could prevent anyone from using this essay for their own purposes. Raymond Kurz, author of Internet and the Law, defines intellectual property as "the product of one's intellectual endeavors. For example, inventing a new and improved widget would be an intellectual endeavor," (1). This is considering that you have the rights to the old widget. Here lies the problem; when should I be able to improve on the old widget? Do I need to pay the original creator of the widget? Also, who owns the rights to said widget, the manufacturer or the creator? Questions like these prompted the first copyright law. He continues, arguing that because "the belief in the powers of classical and English literature was still extremely strong" in England, allusions to the magna opera of the English canon appear throughout the works of Great War poets. The Cost Of Free Will Eric Fetsch Mrs. Sturges AP Literature September 14, 2016 The Cost of Free Will; Within the Human Condition Temptation, as an omnipresent force, possesses the capacity to dictate one 's life. Drawing the line between good and evil, these desires for destruction have the ability to take utter control or linger within the shadows. Manifesting from within, or as an exterior component, the darkness within feeds on the destruction of humanity, stealing peoples ' innocence. It is within the human condition to formulate decisions and to purposefully chose between right and wrong. Character is defined by the actions of humanity including their ability to choose, and take accountability for such choices. Within Harper Lee 's To Kill a Mockingbird and William Golding 's Lord of the Flies, the authors explore the essence of free will and its ramification amongst both good and bad characters. Humanity is ultimately born with sin, but is not bound by it. Free will elevates humans beyond their primitive state. In To Kill a Mockingbird, in spite of popular belief that "Atticus Finch won 't win" the case, he still willingly represented Tom Robinson, a black male, in a rape case against Mayella Ewell (Lee 289). Atticus struggled to maintain his ethical ideals as he is questioned by Scout; "if you shouldn 't be defendin ' him, then why are you doin ' it?" Many phreakers had developed boxes, named by color, that would do things to the phone network, just by holding it up to the reciever to play recorded tones. • 34. Pros And Cons Of Miscarriage Of Justice As we all may realize once a crime is committed the suspect is charged and then sentenced based off the judge's decision. As we recall a crime is an unlawful act punishable by a state or other authority. In other words, those who commit minor or major crimes get incarcerated depending how serious is crime. Also, in some cases suspects receive supervised probation and must be watched periodically by an assigned officer. It is understandable that those who commit crimes are held accountable for their actions. Over the past decade families have been destroyed after knowing their significant other will be in jail for a long period of time based off a wrongful conviction. Over the past years victims have been incarcerated wrongfully on charges such as rape or murder. In many cases the victims were coerced to speak, confessions were manipulated to make the detective look good, or the officer yelled and smuggled their face so that the victim can forcefully say anything. A wrongful conviction known as a miscarriage of justice primarily is the conviction and punishment of a person for a crime they did not commit. During the late years of 1980 it was truly a year of miscarriage of justice for a family of five teens who were arrested and charged with raping a woman in a New York City park. As a result of this abundance, the Scots of this era consumed a diet consisting primarily animal products being supplemented by the most widely grown local grain: oats. • 40. The Leadership Of The Enron Corporation Thank you, Devin, for explaining the role leadership plays in organizations and specifically at Enron. Leadership of the Enron corporation was a group of high payed executives. Their mission statement claimed they "treat others as we would like to be treated ourselves....We do not tolerate abusive or disrespectful treatment. Ruthlessness, callousness and arrogance don 't belong here." (Revolutionary Worker 2002) However, "as in other aspects of Enron's culture, the appearance did not match reality." (Stephens and Behr 2002) Enron could become an "energy broker" in lieu of company delivering energy with the deregulation of electrical power in 1988. "Deregulation allowed Enron to be creative – for the first time, a company that had been required to "operate within the lines" could innovate and test limits." (Sims and Brinkmann 2003) Enron went from a company with humble beginnings that has faced difficult years to an organization "where a handful of highly paid executives were able to pocket millions..." (Sims and Brinkmann 2003) With deregulation and the use of mark–to–market accounting Enron was able to legally make millions while being unethical. Ken Lay and Jeffrey Skilling were the team known as The Smartest Guys in the Room. This powerhouse team of two people coordinated their work to meet a shared common objective. That objective was to make money. This objected created a culture that was one of "intense pressure to keep Enron stocks on an ever–rising curve." (Stephens ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Legalization of Marijuana Essay Legalization of Marijuana "The only way in which a human being can make some approach to knowing the whole of any subject is by hearing what can be said about it by persons of every variety of opinion and studying all modes in which in can be looked at by every character of mind. No wise man ever acquired his wisdom in any mode but this.' – John Stuart Mill" (Mill. 7). The topic of legalizing marijuana is a very conservational issue in American politics today. There are many good arguments both for and against legalization. But most important is that all of these arguments are based on facts. The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937, the act that effectively made marijuana illegal in the US, was based on the fact that "marijuana caused ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moreover, more than "300,000 people a year are arrested on marijuana charges, contributing to the clogging of our courts and overcrowding prisons." (Grinspoon. 142) All this is also costing tax payers' money on top of the 18 billion a year. The war on drugs is a war within our homes, a war between our friends and family. From the early 1970's until present we have heard that marijuana "destroyed brain cells, caused psychoses, lowered testosterone levels ad sperm counts, led to breast development in males... caused chromosome breakage and birth defects." For fear of governmental infiltration by Communists, an outbreak of accusations swept the nation as a result of the Wisconsin senator, and helped create what is known as the second Red Scare ("McCarthyism") Joseph McCarthy was born November 14, 1908 in Grand Chute, Wisconsin to dairy farmers, lived an average life until the age of sixteen. At this point in time, McCarthy dropped out of school until 1929, when he decided to go back and finish high school. As time went on, the initial list of 100 that the Senator had naming all the communists would fluctuate at one point decreasing to 57, and later increasing to 81 (Ferrell 10–11). Despite the numerous accusations, McCarthy is re–elected as Senator in the election of 1952. Just a year later the Republican Party took over Congress, and McCarthy gained the position as chairman of the Senate Permanent Investigations Committee. With the position came great power, which McCarthy used to further accuse officials of Communist activities, and attacked the army in a search for potential members of the Communist party ("Joseph R. McCarthy). Once the accusations based on almost nonexistent evidence became too much for the American people to further bear, the senatorial colleagues began to investigate the rogue Senator and his findings. The investigation was a televised broadcast of thirty six days' worth or hearings of the Senator. As the American public viewed the hearings, the exposure of the Senator began to cause doubts by the public viewers of the program. Kand Department Of Computer Science and Informatics, Purdue School of Science, IUPUI smkand@iupui.edu Abstract– A lecture given by Guy L. Steele in 1998 at "OOPSLA 13th ACM SIGPLAN conference on Object–oriented programming" focuses mainly on the nature and growth of programming–language design. The speaker started his lecture by giving insights into the use and nature of programming–languages. He started with examples of English language comparing with a programming–language. He talked about the set of constraints showing one may use any word of single syllable. The speaker also demonstrates it can be confining to expressing yourself when you don't have access to an extensive vocabulary. If someone wishes to use the longer words, one must define them using only such words have one syllable Guy Steele shows with his talk is that small language restricts the expressiveness of thoughts. You must define a lot of new words to express your thoughts and ideas clearly. .He gives many more interesting points how languages should be grown. He discusses that how programmer needs to enhance the ability to expand the vocabularies of languages that feels weakened. The speaker ends his lecture after explaining the main goal of programming language design by giving various examples. An Overview of Postmodernism Essay The political climate at the beginning of the 1940's and the changes taking place all around the world drastically influenced the face of contemporary society. The invasion of Poland by Germany on 1st of September 1939 was the first stone thrown in the face of freedom of expression and liberty out of the many that followed for the next decades. The dawn of the Second World War was one of the premises that forced many European artists, pioneers par excellence in their field, through their French or German inherited status, to immigrate across the ocean. Due to the exile, the art centre also moved overseas, from Paris to New York, offering a new opportunity for American art to be the initiator in what was generally accepted as the new ... However, when consulting the Macmillan Dictionary (2010) the description offered is significantly less conclusive: "ideas, attitudes, or styles of art, literature, or thinking that have developed after modernism, often as a reaction against " The main accent is set on the chronological aspect of postmodernism and its logical and historical flow offering the reader not enough information to identify a clear period or any particular feature. Only by comparing the two definitions, a very small part of the available explanations on the subject, and at the same time reading them together one can identify one of the main components of the movement: diversity in all its aspects. The difference in these definitions is not just a simple coincidence and should be taken as a figure of speech for the description of the entire period. During this time critics and writers, artists and architects etc. have tried to find a proper explanation for the changes they were being part of, concretised in what became known as Postmodernism. If college athletes were paid, it would motivate them competitively as well because the revenue the program brings in is partially based off performance for signing TV deals and getting bids to postseason games that earn more money for the school. The more successful a team is, the more money they will be able to negotiate for in TV deals and the more likely they get bids to play in post season games to generate extra revenue. The basis of public policy is self–ruled by national legal laws and guidelines. Further substrates contain both judicial explanations and regulations in which it becomes official by legislature. Gun Control Laws Should be Tightened Essay According to James Madison in his Federalist Papers, "Americans have the right and advantage of being armed – unlike the citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust the people with arms," (Raymond). Madison may be correct about Americans having more rights than many other countries, but sometimes the government has too much trust in the American people. Taking away all privately owned guns does not solve anything because doing so would consequentially create a communist state. As the technology, build, and practicality of the hand gun changed over the past couple of hundred years, so has the increased want and demand. Of course, as more people started owning guns, the crime rate and deaths by gun shot up. Basically, it used to be every man for himself. As the government started worrying farther than just setting the rules but actually having people abide by the rules, laws and restrictions were set to try to regulate who owned guns and why they would use them. In 1934, Congress first started regulating the sale of automatic firearms. Not until four years later did the government think to make it federal law to require gun sellers to be licensed and to prohibit felons from purchasing them (Newsbatch 1). Even with rules that shops were supposed to follow, there are loopholes. The problem with some people in the U.S. is they will go buy guns because they have no criminal record, and then sell it to someone who is willing to pay them for the gun. • 65. The Soviet Union And The United States Due to the onset of the Cold War and the early 1960s, the popular and political climate in the United States changed. The relationship between the Soviet Union and the United States was directed by ideological, political and technological factors. The rivalry between the two powers rooted from their contrasting ideological principles since the United States was a democratic republic where the people believed that every citizen had equal representation in the government and the Soviet Union was a communist nation. The US embodied the principles of a democratic nation believing in the ideals of "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness" as well as having an economy that was based on capitalism. In contrast to the ideology of the US, the Soviet Union fell under communist rule during the Russian Revolution of 1917, which was based on the idea that all assets should be owned by the government and then divided among the citizens of the nation. The Soviet Union took communism a step further as the many of the leaders were totalitarian during the 20th century, meaning that "all power was in the hands of the ruler". In 1946, Churchill declared the separation between the east and west by saying that an iron curtain had descended through the middle of Europe (Churchill Delivers Iron Curtain Speech 1). • 77. Man the Hunter Revisited Man the Hunter: Revisited In 1966, a group of about fifty anthropologists met in Chicago for a conference that would later known as the "Man the Hunter" meeting. The meeting contrasted with earlier scholarship and presented a Hollywood approach to the topic of early man, one where our ancestors were strong, powerful, and in control of their environment. Anthropologists Sherwood L. Washburn and C.S. Lancaster (1968), both present at the conference claimed, "our intellect, interests, emotions, and basic social life–all are evolutionary products of the success of the hunting adaptation". The book Man the Hunter that emerged from the conference forced a re–evaluation of human subsistence strategies and the role of the hunter in human ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Additionally, the sexual division of labor was given more attention and there was recognition of the importance of the female contribution given to sustaining early modern human society. As a result of the research, the gatherer female emerged and in many ways surpassed the male hunter as the foundation of early modern human society. The female gatherer trumped the male hunter. Ultimately, the work of the feminist anthropologists was significant because it discredited the male– centric theory of the 1960's, emasculated the role of man, but provided a more balanced and accurate perspective regarding the role of women in early human society. Progressing into the modern era, research has again refocused the academic microscope on the once chastised 'man the hunter' theory. Contrasting with earlier scholarship, Michael P. Richards and Erik Trinkhaus (2009) proved Neanderthals and early modern humans relied on meat and hunting for subsistence. They did so through comparative isotopic analysis of nitrogen and carbon isotope values to compare protein consumption between early modern humans, Neanderthals, and local fauna. For example, the Oase 1 (the oldest directly dated modern human in Europe) has a nitrogen level that is 10.8% higher than the ibex and 8.0% higher than the red deer. ... • 79. Effectiveness Of The No Child Left Behind Act Of 2001 (... Introduction This study will focus on the effectiveness of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB). The NCLB Act of 2001 was a reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) (www.newamerica.org). The Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 was a Great Society program that allocated federal funds for education and looked to hold schools accountable (www2.ed.gov). The NCLB Act of 2001 was passed through Congress in 2001 with bipartisan support and greatly increased the Federal Government's role in the education system and almost 95,000 public schools to include standardized testing and holding these schools accountable for student proficiency (www.newamerica.org). Data for elementary and secondary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Are these students ready for post–secondary education and did NCLB assist in that readiness? NCLB Review The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 was signed into law by then President George W. Bush on January 8, 2002. The statement of purpose for NCLB begins: The purpose of this title is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high–quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging State academic achievement standards and state academic assessments (115 STAT. 1439). Lee and Jacob (2011) write that one of the major goals of NCLB was to make every student proficient in mathematics and reading by 2013–2014. The NCLB most notable requirements were for standardized testing and holding schools accountable through public reporting and sanctions. The law required that states test once a year in reading and mathematics in third through eighth grades as well as once in tenth through twelfth grades to continually monitor change (Lee and Jacob, 2011). Under NCLB, schools were required to make adequate yearly progress (AYP), which was an increase in proficiency chosen by the state in order to achieve its final goal of every student being proficient. There was a six year plan for schools to make improvements inside of NCLB where the sanctions started fairly reasonable and grew in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
