assata shakur
Brandon Ross September 3, 2014 Africana Studies, SP12 Assata Shakur Paper Assata Shakur is a very
strong and determined individual that refused to give up her beliefs and ideas to receive her freedom.
When she was incarcerated, treated like an animal, beaten to a bloody pulp and lost all basic human
rights, she only grew more stronger and determined. Shakur was a political prisoner and suffered
because of her Black Panther Black Liberation Army affiliation. She spent six years in prison for
crimes that she was not proven to have done or had any connection to. Most people would have given
up and sold out to get their freedom back, she didn t because she simply took it back! Shakur s life
changed dramatically on the night of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her time in the hospital became better as her body healed and the abuse from the officers stopped. A
short time later Shakur was transported from the hospital to Middlesex County jail. It seemed like the
middle of the night...A wheelchair was waiting for me. I figured they were taking me to jail said
Shakur describing the experience. (Assata 45) Shakur s status as a political activist would affect her
greatly in prison. The federal authorities wanted Shakur isolated from all the other prisoners because
they did not want her to spread her radical ideas to any of the other prisoners which could possibly
result in a revolt. Her cell was isolated from all the other prisoners and was patrolled by guards at all
times. In prison, Shakur was subjected to the nihilistic ideas that she encountered on the outside.
During this time blacks were treated as lower class citizens. Society wanted to keep African
Americans in the same ghettos and isolate us from the nicer neighborhoods (domestic colonialism).
They did this by racial profiling (Assata Shakur s arrest on the turnpike), police highly populating
certain areas and raising prices to live in certain areas. These methods create a sense of self
worthlessness inside of a person which often lead to crime. This trend often leads to African
Americans being arrested and incarcerated. Once in prison, the system has now taken the little power
that the person once had (the right to vote, speak etc.) The prisoner now

Visual Rhetorical Analysis
Visual Rhetorical Theory allows for readers to view a text in a specific light. Symbols, images, colors,
fonts, etc. all can play into the overall meaning of a text. Visual Rhetorical Rhetoric as theory allows
the reader to analyze visual artifacts to produce a certain meaning that can be different to each
individual. The theory can draw to attention otherization of people groups, how consumer culture in
America can change poverty around the world, how southern culture can produce obesity and set bad
morals for children, and create a call to action for the people. All of these examples listed are from a
campaign commercial from Compassion International that was produced in 2008. Compassion is an
organization that mainly revolves around showing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Growing up, southerners are taught to be morally good and follow direction of their elders. One of the
common televised and know practices is when parents say to their children you are not getting up
from this table until you clean your plate. This one humorous and little statement has caused a
dilemma. This commercial that Compassion aired completely obliterates the southern teaching. They
are asking for people to give up meals and money to help fund these children. The southern culture
has created bad habits that flow from generation to generation. Also, the south has the largest obesity
rate in the nation. That statistic alone proves that southerners consume more than any other part of the
country. These are the people that need to be targeted to give up meals, and money for Compassion
International. Culture in the south takes food for granted and spends thousands upon thousands of
dollars on food per year. The campaign urges people to just give $30 dollars a month to support a
child. That is equivalent to not eating fast food as a family a couple of times a month, but the
entitlement of the south is hard to break. This commercial brings to light the severity of what
southerners live in and how unaware people are to the poverty of the world. Giving up going out to eat
a couple of meals a month is more than

Planets In Our Galaxy Essay
The next variable fp can be specified through the documentation and discovery of planets in our
galaxy. We have been able to determine through both observational techniques that nearly all planets
in our galaxy are 1, 2, or 3 times the mass of earth also known as super earths, and occur at an
incredibly frequent rate. In fact, these super earths are so frequent that each size has a third of a chance
to be orbiting a star. With all three sizes considered there must be at least one earth or super earth sized
planet per star.
Following fp, the variable ne describes the fraction of planets per star that could support life. In my
opinion, planets that are within the habitable zone of an F type star or below could support life. Any
planet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to astrobio.net, F types stars more than double the habitable zone of our star, with this
information I would conservatively say three planets could fit within the habitable zone of an F type
star. Next, because mars is just out of the habitable zone of our solar system I will include it as a
possible candidate for life. Therefore, I would argue that G type stars could host a max of two planets.
Finally, I believe stars under G type could only host one habitable planet. More planets in each of
these habitable zones would disrupt one another s orbit and end up expelling or destroying each other.
The average of these different star types is two, which is my final estimate for the number of stars
around a host star.
Planets outside of the habitable zone could experience gravitational forces acting on the planet from
another. Ideally, this action could heat the inside of the planet and stimulate volcanic activity and
therefore life. We can see an example of this process on Jupiter s and Saturn s moons Europa and
Enceladus. On them, scientists suspect that hydrothermal vents create enough heat to maintain a liquid
sea below a thick layer of outer ice. However, I believe that action of this magnitude would largely be
limited to much smaller moons able to remain stable at much closer distances to their host planet.
Additional to a solar habitable zone, scientists believe

History Of The Cromford Mills
While my time in Manchester was great, the constant days of factory smoke and the sound of ships
docking got too repetitive. I decided to go somewhere else, and that s when I heard about the
Cromford Mills. I heard about a man named Richard Arkwright that has invented something that
changed lots of lives. He invented what was is called a cotton spinning mill. This mill was amazing. It
had increased the amount of spun cotton by an overwhelming amount. But what really caught my
attention was that it did not need a skilled laborer, which fit me perfectly. In mid 1789, I worked my
way to Cromford, England where I began my work at the Cromford Mills. I was one of 800 workers
who worked in the mills, and it was great. When I entered the mills for

The Handmaid s Tale Dystopian Essay
The Dystopian concerns in The Road and The Handmaid s Tale Dystopian novels have a prominent
role in American fiction after 1945. When one talks about Dystopian subgenre, it envisions a time not
so distant from the present that world is in an unpleasant time which can deal with either government
fallen under a totalitarian rule or the environment is in a degradable state. There are two specific
novels that fall under this subgenre: The Road and The Handmaid s Tale. The Road deals with the
outcome of the environment in the United States after a nuclear outbreak, and The Handmaid s Tale
deals with the idea of theocracy and the thin line that separates church and state, concerns that can
make up a dystopian novel. The Road deals with the United States in the not so far future being
damaged to an unrepairable state by unknown nuclear outbreak which is one concern that is focused
on in a dystopian novel. A man and boy must find faith in order to continue their journey to the coast,
where there might be an escape. Through out the novel there is many passage hinting at a degradable
environment. The first chapter the man mentions an unknown creature stating, It swung its head low

will identify inefficient business practices that have led to the companies first profit loss in its history.
We will evaluate the companys current pricing structure, ordering methods, shipping and delivery

The key issue presented in front of the management is the possible steps to be taken by the
management in order to avoid such losses. Critical Thought The issue addressed by the accounting
system of Dakota office products invites our attention to the premise of Activity Based costing
methodology. We are certain about the fact that the accounting and reporting system at Dakota Office
Product is inappropriate and is leading to the company making wrong decision ultimately leading to
losses. This was apparent from the record where the company was able to increase its sales without a
corresponding increase in the profits for that particular year. Activity based costing system is an
approach which seeks to allocate the overhead cost to the products on a scientific and realistic basis.
The existing system of allocating cost at Dakota Office products were inadequate in so much so that it
was following an unreasonable basis for allocating the cost, which were known and visible, such as
the desktop delivery cost. The existing system was suffering from oversight of some of the expenses.
ABC costing system seeks to overcome the problem of oversight and make a more reasonable
allocation of the costs. The distinctive feature of this method is the fact that the method can provide
useful insights to the management as to the activities which are leading to the cost by

Identification Of The Specific Standard, Guideline Or...
Identification of the specific standard, guideline or criteria The report makes it publicly known the
harsh implications that errors in healthcare are a leading cause of death and injury. In the late1999,
Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies of the United States released the report, To Err
Is Human: Building a Safer Health System. The report cited the findings of a major study that found
medical errors kill at least 44,000 and perhaps as many as 98,000 Americans in hospitals each year.
Deaths due to preventable adverse events exceed the deaths attributable to motor vehicle accidents
(43,458), breast cancer (42,297), or AIDS (l6, 5l6). Total national costs are estimated to be between
$37.6 billion and $50 billion for these events. A depressing comparison of about 6,000 Americans die
from workplace injuries every year and medication errors are estimated to account for about 7,000 of
this deaths (Gray, E., Gray, I., Yodice P., Rezai, F., Fless, K.). Computerized Physician Order Entry
(CPOE) is the process of entering medication orders and other physician s instructions electronically
using a computer based system to ensure standardized, legible and complete orders. Its
implementation has been recommended to improve patient safety and outcomes primarily by reducing
medication errors that usually arise from faulty prescriptions (Al Dorzi, Hasan M., Tamim, Hani M.,

The Purpose Of Ideology
1. ideology Meaning and Philosophy
Ideology is a system of meaning that helps define and explain the world and that makes value
judgements about that world. It refers not only to the beliefs held about the world but also to the basic
ways in which the world is defined (Croteau, Hoynes, and Milan 1953). Ideology is a body of ideas
concerning economic, social and political values and goals which posit action programmes for
attaining these goals. Padelford and Lincoln

Link between ideology and media
The ideology of the media is broad and manifests in the communicativity of the media. To facilitate
ideological analysis, however, the key is the fit between the images and texts in a specific media
output, plus the manner thought and discussion on social and cultural issues. Questions, however, arise
as to how the media content (shaped by ideologies) depict real life. This begs the question of function
and ethics. The ideological analysis further attempts to answer questions about what the media
messages depict of the society and its people.
This underscores why politicians have long perceived mass media as a veritable channel of
disseminating an ideology so that the society can mirror itself against what the media feeds it and thus
be manipulated. This further begs the question of whether the media is a contributor or otherwise to
societal problems in the face of political ideological dissemination.
Furthermore, the media and ideology are interconnected in the following ways (Asemah, 2011):
i. The media serves as a channel for communication of ideologies ii. Media function requires its
representation of concepts of reality within and without the local environment to the

The Marriage Strike
If one were to read any article by the average woman in the media and some males for that matter
regarding the declining state of marriage rates today. One could reasonably think that the reason
marriages are on the decline is that women are choosing not to get married or some other such tripe
that ineffectively attempts to hide the truth of the matter. (Ayanna, G. 2010), (Dewitt.1992),
(Rosenbloom, 2006), (Campbell, 2001) The actual reason for the decline in marriage rates is not
because women don t want to get married (a bitter anthem recited in retaliation to men s rejection of
marriage.) but due to The Marriage Strike. According to an article in O magazine author, Ann Marsh
notes, A marriage strike is the social phenomena ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Women initiate these unilateral divorces on demand three times as often as men do (Whitehead et al
2002). While the courts may grant the former spouses joint legal custody, the odds are nearly 40 to one
of the wife winning physical custody (US Census Bureau. 2000). Once the couple is divorced, odds
are at least even that the wife will interfere with the husband s visitation rights. Three quarters of
divorced men surveyed say their ex wives have interfered with their visitation, and 40 percent of
mothers studied admitted that they had done so and that they had generally acted to punish their exes
(Rubin, 1997). Then, of course, there is the issue of financial losses due to court imposed payments. In
the end, the wife will keep most of the couple s assets and the house. The husband will need to set up
a new residence and pay at least a third of his take home pay to his ex in child support, on top of
whatever alimony payments the courts impose on him. These can run as high as another third of his
income. Add the cost of taxes to that and the man gets to keep exactly 13% of his take home pay
(Rubin, 1997). Nevertheless, as bad as all this is, it would still make our hypothetical man the lucky
one. After all, he could be one of those fathers who cannot see his children at all because his ex has
made a false accusation of domestic violence, child abuse, or child molestation. He could be one of

Pop Art Research Paper
Notably Pop Art and Assemblages have been described as brash and also extreme and subversive in
terms of the sixties pop art period. Some early stirrings of this movement can be traced back to
England in the late fifties, with a small association of: artists, designers and historians known as the
ICA. Institutes of Contemporary Art, London. Given the intellectual approach to science, culture and
material s being explored within these early beginning s. It became evident that the robust influence of
Dada elements, were being manipulated into the pop movement. This necessary development, in terms
of the use of Dada art paid homage to the concept of Assemblages but it was Duchamp s contribution
that was invaluable from its original context ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This being said indicates that Pop art could be seen as one of those crossover movements. The
confusion and extreme madness of colour and space show events of the Dada influence. Investigating
the historical and cultural issues could be the starting point for many artworks and inspiration. To say
that an artwork is brash, extreme or subversive, indicates a responds to any artwork or movement.
However the point of art, to get a respond either being good or bad... If you have serious ideas, you
make art, discoveries, and all of a sudden your head starts to break up into laughter, if you find that all
your ideas are useless and ridiculous, know that DADA HAS BEGUN TO SPEAK TO YOU 10.The
readymade object being seen as a thing becomes an issue of context rather than the use of materials.
The question it raises, is it art because its contexts are in a gallery space? or should we ask what is the
fundamental aim of the objects used? The object of art is the intelligently language in a visual format.
The Dada movements short influence could be seen as a weapon that injected humour both in a
rebellious and spontaneous revolution. This could be misread and not seen as well though out, however
the fundamental elements of Dada and assemblages as still being practiced today as a

Disparity Between Imprisonment Rate And Crime Rate
The Disparity Between Imprisonment Rate and Crime Rate in Australia
By Christopher Batho During the period of 2002 to 2014, the imprisonment rate in Australia increased
while at the same time the crime rate decreased. This essay will aim to give reasons and theories as to
why this apparent disparity between the rising imprisonment rate and decreasing crime rate exists. To
do this, the purposes for punishment will be examined, how and why this purpose of punishment has
changed over time, the sociological and criminological theories that best explain this disparity, and
finally the implications on society through these criminal justice trends. However firstly we will
examine the statistics that prove this disparity. Between 2002 and ... Show more content on

Property crime includes unlawful entry with intent (UEWI), motor vehicle theft (MVT) and other
theft. The total number of offences for property crime has decreased from 1,188,582 in 2002 to
773348 in 2012. From both sets of data, it can be calculated that in the period of 2002 to 2012, the
imprisonment rate increased 13.5 percent yet the violent crime and property crime rates decreased 26
percent and 35 percent respectively. The question is, how is this possible? This will be answered later
but now the purposes for punishment will now be studied. When a person is guilty of a crime, it is
society s job to punish this person for their act. Once the person has been found guilty, they are then
sentenced by a judge with a certain purpose or purposes for the punishment. The main four purposes
used are retribution, deterrence, rehabilitation and incapacitation. Retribution is defined by Mani as
the offender must be punished simply because the wrongful act merits condemnation and punishment.
(Reference). Deterrence is based on the idea that criminal behaviour can be deterred if punishment is
swift, certain, and severe enough to counter the benefits or pleasure gained from committing crime.
(Reference). Rehabilitation of an offender may be achieved through education or therapy. However, it
must be understood that in order for rehabilitation to be

Taking a Look at Logistics Management
The primary aim of logistics is to co ordinate the transportation, storage and handling of products as
they move from the source of raw materials, through the manufacturing system to their final point of
sale in a way that it meets customer requirements at minimum cost. In the past this cost has been
defined in purely monetary terms. Recently the world has witnessed an increasing awareness about
environmental and sustainability issues. This growing concern for the environment has a created
pressure on companies to reduce their negative environmental impact. As defined by ISO14001, the
environmental impact is a modification of the environment, negative or beneficial, resulting wholly or
partially from environmental aspects of an organization . Since the transportation of goods leads to air
and noise pollution, leads to fatal accidents sometimes and has significant impact on global warming,
firms have been trying to render their supply chains and logistics operations more environmental
friendly. That this why many Green logistics strategies have been devised in order to achieve an
efficient and environmentally friendly distribution and transportation system.
In this paper we will discuss what exactly is green logistics, and why green logistics strategies have
gained attention recently. We will then introduce some of these green strategies and their benefits. We
will finally discuss some of the challenges facing green logistics

Immigration And Crime Essay
The economic theory of crime predicts that all else equal, individuals with lower outside options
commit more crimes than others. While immigrants are known to have lower levels of education,
lower wages, and higher unemployment rates than natives, previous studies have not found a
relationship between immigration and crime. Crime rates have been on a decline, even in areas where
there are large numbers of immigrant populations. Between the years 1990 and 2013, the foreign born
population grew from 7.9 percent to 13.5 percent in the U.S. Also during this time, data from the

This data has been similar for decades. The 2010 U.S Census shows incarceration rates for less

not for violent crime rates due to illegal immigration. The crimes that were committed were brought
about from Hispanics and White segregation. Hispanics were not given jobs or give low pay jobs with

Alexander The Great Of The Empire
In the Late 4th century, BC Alexander the great was a very popular and was a great king to everyone.
He was one of the best kings ancient Greece had. His mindset and goal after his dad died was to take
over the Persian empire because this is what his dad wanted to do, he moray thought that this is what
he should do to make his dad proud. This all started at the age of 20. Alongside Alexander the Great.
The Roman empire took a lot longer to conquer due to its size. The Persian empire was taken over a
lot faster. Alexander ran his empire by him self and gained people as he went along.

Brock Turner s Case Study
In cases like Elliot Rogers and like Brock Turner s we see how gender favoritism can change the terms
of events. For Brock Turner it helped to low the sentence he would receive, and for Elliot Roger it
would create this idea of being superior a superior human and a superior race. In cases where the
perpetrator is other then white in the United States they are not branded as mentally unhealthy like
Elliot and are not taken into consideration on how the crime may affect the perpetrator like what
happened for Brock Turner. An important aspect regarding the link between sexist attitudes and male
violence against women concerns the fact that sexist attitudes function as socially shared norms in
justifying such violence. Generally this means rules ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
How they do this is Bona fide occupational requirements, or BFOR for short. What BFOR is, is its a
true requirement of a job that merits a possibly discriminatory effect. (Michael Kimmel, page 218)
Gender favoritism plays a part in how companies select the BFOR, an example in terms of police
specific testing, several physical ability tests have been used in North America. (Gregory S. Anderson,
page 10) In some cases BFOR was not properly used and is a clear example of how gender favoritism
shapes certain fields of work. In 1994, Tawney Meiorin, who had successfully worked as a forest
firefighter in British Columbia for more than 2 years, was dismissed from her job for marginally
failing one of four parts of an aerobic fitness test. (Rickards Kuruganti, page 451) Although it makes
sense for somebody who has a job that is very hazardous to have to pass all tests that are mandatory,.
However, on appeal, the Supreme Court of Canada determined that the standard was not a BFOR and
that the standards for this test had not been shown to be an accurate indicator of ability to perform the
duties of a firefighter safely and efficiently. She was subsequently rehired and compensated. (Rickards

Blame In Macbeth
Blame is a rhetoric idea that can be imposed on anyone and anything. Macbeth is blamed for the
murder of the king, yet it can argumented that Lady Macbeth is also at fault here, but one thing comes

it gives no excuse to murder because Macbeth had a choice and a voice for that matter to stop his

Symbolism In William Golding s The Lord Of The Flies
Authors have a sneaky way of revealing the greater themes that they are writing about in their books.
They reveal themes by using symbols to represent both the actual person or object and also a deeper,
hidden meaning. Placed through the story, symbols can be discovered if the reader takes a close
thoughtful look. In William Goldings, The Lord of the Flies, a group of school boys are involved in a
plane crash that leaves them stranded on a deserted island. The boys slowly begin to lose their
civilized nature and start turning into primitive savages. Golding uses symbols throughout his story to
demonstrate their crumbling society. The three most important symbols in the novel are the conch
shell, The Lord of the Flies and the face paint or masks.
The conch shell symbolizes the law and order of the boys old world, the adult world in which the boys
are used to following rules in. When Roger destroys the conch, chaos quickly takes over because there
is no leader or way to call a meeting anymore. Ralph and Piggy find the conch shell on the beach at
the beginning of the book and use it to call the boys to a meeting after the plane crashes. The conch
shell becomes a symbol of power, civilization and order in the book. The conch shell represent power
because Ralph was elected chief partially because he found it and was holding the shell when the
group was deciding on a leader. The shell helps the boys keep order in their meetings, because only

Isaac Asimov s Three Laws Of Robotics
1.1 Introduction to Robotics
Robotics is a branch of engineering that involves the conception, design, manufacture, and operation
of robot s. This field overlaps with electronics, computer science, artificial intelligence, mechatronics,
nanotechnology, and bioengineering.
Science fiction author Isaac Asimov is often given credit for being the first person to use the term
robotics in a short story composed in the 1940s. In the story, Asimov suggested three principles to
guide the behavior of robots and smart machines. Asimov s Three Laws of Robotics, as they are
called, have survived to the present:
1. Robots must never harm human beings.
2. Robots must follow instructions from humans without violating rule 1.
3. Robots must protect themselves without violating the other rules.
Robot is defined as a mechanical design that is capable of performing human tasks or behaving in a
human like manner. Building a robot requires expertise and complex programming. It s about building

Death In A. E. Houseman s To An Athlete Dying Young
Death is an unavoidable element of the world in which we live. The rich and the poor, the strong and
the weak, the brave and the cowardly all must face the end of existence one day. People in this world
often choose to ignore this looming threat and live their lives as if this terminus does not exist. One
does not fall into this trend category: A. E. Houseman. As said by one observer There are two themes
in Houseman: man s morality...and man s rebellion against his lot. (Conolly 49). Houseman s poem To
An Athlete Dying Young is no exception. Here he delves into the dreaded and complex subject of
early death (Ruby ed. 228, 230). In the poem To an Athlete Dying Young from A Shropshire Lad by
A.E. Housman one can see the choices in his style, which are used to cover both sides of the central
theme of death, and the author s use of symbolism as a device. To An Athlete Dying Young has
multiple noticeable features in its style. The poem is written in the form of a narrative poem, or lyric
ballad, in which a story is told. This form of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

between the crowning of garlands is the irony at the heart of the poem. The hero s crown... that the
town pays the athlete on his victory, withers away like the floral headgear of a young girl. As he
concludes, The message is that death is the final victor. (Meyers 236). The laurel is representative of
our short lives and they wither quickly like the athlete. With each season the flowers first bloom, then
flourish, and finally dry up; life does not remain for long (Ruby ed. 233, 235). Here the poem offers

Violent Conflict And Thechallenge Of Food Security Essay
VIOLENT CONFLICT AND THECHALLENGE OF FOOD SECURITY IN NORTH EAST

MOTUBOMA THOMAS
Department of Political Administrative Studies (International Relations)
University of Port Harcourt,
Port Harcourt, Nigeria ABSTRACT
This research work sought to examine the effect of violent conflict and the challenge of food security
in the North Eastern region of Nigeria as well as its effects on other part of the country and
neighbouring countries. Emphasis was placed on analysing the relationship between violence and
agricultural productivity and investments in the region using contextual analysis based on both
primary and secondary data. The theoretical perspective that was adopted is the frustration aggression
theory which states that people will always resort to violence/aggression whenever they are
excessively frustrated. This theory was therefore employed to understand causes of the problem of
violent conflict in the North East. It was established that violent conflict has caused a lot of problems
for the people living in that region most especially with regards tofood security since most of the
inhabitants of this region are subsistence farmers and since they have been displaced, cannot cultivate
their farms to feed themselves. The study recommends that government should tackle the root cause of
violent conflict and strengthen the fight against insurgency in order to bring lasting peace to the
region. The study also suggested that the economy should be highly

Sonnet X By John Donne Analysis
Socrates once said: [...]For anything that men can tell, death may be the greatest good that can happen
to them: but they fear it as if they knew quite well that it was the greatest of evils. And what is this but
that shameful ignorance of thinking that we know what we do not know? ( Socrates ) Sonnet X by
John Donne discusses the idea that people fear death without just cause, simply because humans are
terrified of that which they cannot comprehend. In his poem, Donne communicates this messages by
means of conceit, personification, and witty wordplay.
Donne is known for writing metaphysical poetry; his writing included lots of conceits, and Sonnet X is
no exception. The metaphysical conceit featured in this poem compares death to sleep. From rest and
sleep, which but thy pictures be, / Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow, (Donne.
Lines 5 6) This couplet articulates that, because death is merely a stronger, much more permanent
version of sleep, it should not be feared; if sleep is pleasurable, then why should death not be viewed
similarly? After all, as Donne continues in lines 11 and 12, sleep induced by drugs such as opium,
which is derived from poppies, and charms can provide rest akin to or even better than death. So why
then, the speaker asks in line 12, is Death so prideful? The following mention of sleep takes a
religious angle; One short sleep past, we wake eternally (Line 13) refers to the interim between a
person s death and Judgement Day, when the soul proceeds to Heaven to live eternally, provided the
person lived a righteous lifestyle. Thus, this line means that death is not the end, per se, but rather the
beginning of eternal life in Heaven. While Donne was not the first to compare death and sleep, this
conceit helps communicate that death should not be feared, for it is much the same as sleep, and marks
the beginning of one s eternal stay in the Pearly Gates.
Wordplay and wit are abundant in Sonnet X; in several instances, the word death is used in three
different ways in the same line! The poem is an apostrophe, the speaker is directing his words at
Death, so obviously, there is personification throughout. This, along with metaphors and other figures
of speech, allows

Intercultural Competency Paper
Developing cultural competency is not always easy and it is not something that one acquires through
birth. Instead, it is a developmental process that is nurtured over time. While the growth process may
start off with a memorized list of acceptable and unacceptable behaviors that one is supposed to
follow, true intercultural competence evolves when behaviors are internalized and occur naturally
because they feel right (Medina LĂłpez Portillo, 2004, p. 315). Stress, anxiety, and difficulties are
sometimes signs that an individual is making progress towards cross cultural deepening (Stephenson,
2002, p. 99). At an extreme, when individuals are overwhelmingly stressed in a new cultural
environment, their failure to adapt is expressed at times by emotional and physical health issues (Li et
al., 2013).
The measurement of an individual s intercultural competence is a complex challenge. The literature
references numerous assessment tools that have emerged over time but it would be difficult to identify
any one particular tool as the best and there seems to be little agreement on what dimensions of
intercultural learning should be tested (Deardorff, 2011; El Ganzoury, 2012; Godwin Jones, 2013).

Justification Of Punishment Justified By Ted Honderinch s...
Why punish? Is the use of punishment Justified? Ted Honderinch s Punishment: The supposed
Justifications Revisited aim to answer these questions. Punishment is at the core of our punitive
systems, therefore society needs to establish a well thought out moral explanation as to why we punish
and what we aim to achieve with the use of punishment. Honderinch set out to analyze the supposed
moral claims that justify the practice of punishment and to determine if they are satisfactory enough
for the intentional infliction suffering and deprivation.
What are the claims as to why punishment should be morally used? The author looks at three main
justifications of punishment. Those who believe that the offender deserves to be chastised for his or
her crime justify punishment by appealing to desert thereby retributive in nature thus backward
looking. The justification of punishment on forward looking factors justifies punishment for its ability
to prevent and reduce crime therefore through punishment the offender is capable of reform and
rehabilitation. The third justification is the mixture of both justifications in which punishment is
deserved for some past offences, and also it reduces crime. From these Justifications, it is clear that
one cannot justify punishment without stating its aim. Honderich argues persuasively that these
justifications that these justifications are not satisfactory.
Honderinch in his analysis considers numerous backward looking justifications, those

A Segregated Education By Jonathan Kozol
A Segregated Education
It has become common today to dismiss the lack of education coming from our impoverished public
schools. Jonathan Kozol an award winning social injustice writer, trying to bring to light how our
school system talks to their students. In his essay Still Separate, Still Unequal, Kozol visits many
public high schools as well as public elementary schools across the country, realizing the outrageous
truth about segregating in our public education system. Kozol, cross examining children describing
their feelings as being put away where no one desires your presence. Children feeling diminished for
being a minority; attending a school that does not take into consideration at the least the child s well
being. Showing clear signs of segregation in the education system. Many education writers have much
to say about the education taking place in our public schools, as well as Kozol. For Instance Diane
Ravitch a research professor of education at New York University spoke about an interesting truth,
saying, The achievement gaps are rooted in social, political, and economic structures. If we are
unwilling to change the root cause, we are unlikely ever to close the gaps. The success of our children
s education is mainly caused by economic, social and political statue. If one does not end the cycle the
gap will most likely never close. This may tie in with when Kozol cites Marina Warner, an essayist
and novelist, saying, There are expensive children and there

Compared to last year, I felt better this year. When I first arrived United States, I knew only a few
Malaysians. I celebrated this major festival with only a friend. We bought some beers, had a long
conversation about our history in how we had celebrated New Year for the past few years. At that

Essay about On Emotion and Value in David Hume and Max...
On Emotion and Value in David Hume and Max Scheler
ABSTRACT: While some philosophers tend to exclude any significance of emotion for the moral life,
others place them in the center of both the moral life and the theory of value judgment. This paper
presents a confrontation of two classic positions of the second type, namely the position of Hume and
Scheler. The ultimate goal of this confrontation is metatheoretical particularly as it concerns the
analysis of the relations between the idea of emotion and the idea of value in this kind of theory of
value judgment. In conclusion, I point to some important theoretical assumptions which underlie the
positions of both thinkers despite all the other differences between them. In at least ... Show more

Hume on Passion and Value
The relation between passion and value in Hume s philosophy has been repeatedly discussed. (3) In
contrast to some contemporary writers, Hume devoted a lot of effort and space to the theory of passion
before presenting his, based on emotion moral theory, in Book III of the Treatise. (4)
However, as I believe, Hume s philosophy on the whole, contains not one, but two theories of passion.
One of them is a theory of the genesis of passions from pains and pleasures. The second theory, on the
other hand, refers to the group of passions which are after N. Kemp Smith called primary passions;
and I will call it the descriptive theory of passion. The Treatise is dominated almost exclusively by the
theory of genesis but the role of the descriptive theory in Enquiries is more important, and particularly
in those places where Hume argues against hedonism and egoism in his theory of motivation. On the
theory of genesis, passions are produced from pains and pleasures either directly or indirectly which,
as it is well known, leads to Hume s distinction between direct and indirect passions. According to the
descriptive theory, however, the situation is quite different. In their existence, the primary passions do
not depend on pleasures and pains, on the contrary, pains and pleasures are produced by them. There is
an interesting tension between these two theories in Hume s philosophy but this problem cannot be
discussed here.

Data commentary on obesity
Colin Andridge
Professor Murphy
Eng 201 MWF 2:00
3 March 2014
Data Commentary Introduction After reading and evaluating six articles written by experts on obesity,
the data seems to imply that better educating people about how their behavioral lifestyle choices effect
their future and current health is the best solution. The six journal articles evaluated and analyzed
include: David Freedman s article, How to Fix the Obesity Epidemic, published in Scientific
American in 2011. Green Gregory s article, Physical Activity and Childhood Obesity: Strategies and
Solutions for Schools and Parents, published in Education in 2012. Micheal Wietings article, Cause

Advocacy and regulation can play a large role in prevention of the problem while physicians
consistently research medical solutions for the obese community. Michael Wieting is a professor of
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Lincoln Memorial University where he is also the Dean of
Clinical Medicine. Like Green, Wieting cites the Center for Disease Control and Prevention often
throughout his paper. Wieting acknowledges different causes and solutions in his paper, and pulls
information from many different scholarly papers written by his peers. His paper avoids bias by
explaining multiple viewpoints on the issue, which allows the reader to interpret and make
conclusions without any sway from the author. The article was written in 2008 and cites sources from
the same year, making the statistics relevant relevant and current information. George Blackburn
reminds readers about the science behind the epidemic of obesity in his article, Science Based
Solutions to Obesity: What are the Roles of Academia, Government, Industry, and Healthcare.
Scientists are constantly researching reasons behind why some people are obese as well as possible
scientific solutions that go beyond the everyday go to the gym solution. As obesity kills more and
more people each year, medical institutions are making a point to study the biochemistry behind the
issue. Blackburn is an expert in the field of healthcare and nutrition, he

The Well Known African American Activist, Ida B. Wells
The well known African American activist, Ida B. Wells was born on July 16, 1862, during the Civil
War. The author, Mia Bay illustrated the life of Wells in her novel, To Tell the Truth Freely: The Life
of Ida B. Wells Bay demonstrated Well s accomplishments as a free African American and the many
struggles she faced after Reconstruction ended and the Jim Crow Laws were enforced. The events in
her life were relatively distinct, but according to the Burns Belfry Museum and the historical marker
labeled Freedman Town in Oxford, Mississippi, her experiences overall represented the social,
economic, and political circumstances that the majority of African Americans faced in the southern
United States during the thirty years, 1862 1892 from her birth in Holly Springs in 1862 through her
decision to leave Memphis in 1892. The Civil War and the Thirteenth Amendment freed African
Americans, providing them with more opportunities with education, jobs, and religion. Unfortunately
reconstruction ended in 1877 when white southerners regained control of the state legislatures and
reversed the progress made since 1865. Her parents raised Ida B. Wells to take education seriously.
Her responsibilities consisted of going to school and learning everything she could. When she was a
teenager, her aunt presented her with the opportunity to move to Memphis to further her education as
well as obtain a job. Like Wells, many other African Americans moved to the cities in search of

Family Therapy In The Film The Laramie Project
The film The Laramie Project discusses the truth behind the horrific death of one of the worst
documented anti gay hate crimes in American history. Prior to his death, Matthew Shepard, was
attending the University of Wyoming, he had a great interest in political affairs, and was known to be
an outstanding member of the community. On the night of October 6, 1998, upon leaving a bar in
Laramie, Wyoming, Matthew Shepard was robbed, tortured, continuously beaten and terrorized by
Russel Henderson and Aaron McKinney. According to the transcripts from over 200 people in the
town of Laramie reported that many individuals in this particular town were raised not to agree with
homosexuality, although many of them also reported that even though they ... Show more content on

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), psychologists provide services with
populations and in areas only within the boundaries of their competence, based on their education,
training, supervised experience, consultation study, or professional experience, together with
safeguarding my understanding of factors associated with age, gender, gender identity, sexual
orientation, etc. (APA, 2017, 2.01a, 2.01b). Along the same lines, psychologists do not engage in
unfair discrimination or harassment based on age, gender, gender identify, sexual orientation, etc.
(APA, 2017, 3.01, 3.03). Thus, although in this case I would be treating Matthew s parents or family,
they were deeply affected by the outcome of a gruesome anti gay hate crime, therefore I would need to
ensure that I would not be inclined to discriminate in any way. Furthermore, even though at the time
of Matthew s assault there was not any legislation regarding hate crimes that referred to anti gay acts
and same sex marriage was not yet legalized, as an ethical psychologist it is important to remain
cognizant that regardless of any conflicts between ethics and the law or regulations, under no
circumstances should psychologists use said law or regulations to justify or defend the

Symbolism In William Jennings Bryan s The Wonderful...
During the late 1800 s, a pervasive sense of melancholy permeated throughout the forgotten, dreary
Midwestern United States. While the industrial revolution boosted the economy on the coasts,
Midwestern farmers were victims of deflationary debt increases, exorbitant shipping and railroad
rates, a high protective tariff, and a government that for the most part ignored them.1 Desperate
circumstances moved the everyday American farmers to join together and voice their grievances.
Instead of seeking federal aid or economic relief, they attempted to use the power of the ballot to
achieve their goals.1 The united group of farmers used the Populist Party as a springboard to launch
their complaints and eventually got their candidate, William Jennings Bryan, nominated for the
presidential election of 1896 by the Democratic Party. L. Frank Baum, a newspaper writer who lived
in a small prairie town in South Dakota, experienced the populist wave firsthand, attending Bryan s
famous Cross of Gold speech in Chicago, and subtly incorporated many aspects of Bryan s campaign
into his children s novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.2 Despite his own claim that this novel was
written solely for the entertainment of the children of today , several historians have discovered that
the book clearly reflects the culture of the time period in which it was written.3 By symbolically

Bisexuality Erasure
Bisexuality Erasure
Saige Brey
Aug 15, 2015 When you hear the term bisexual , what comes to mind? For some it s what they
identify with in the LGBTQIA+, for others it s a confusing and broad term that somewhat covers their
sexuality, and for others it just seems like a foreign and strange idea. As a bisexual, I ve heard the
question, Well which gender do you prefer more? several times. My answer to that is usually along the
lines of neither , which leads to some confused looks or even some of disbelief.
To start, bisexuality is not a Well, you re either straight or gay! Pick one! . Bisexuality is within the
LGBTQIA+ and sexuality spectrum, but it is neither a preference of any of the genders. For some, yes
they prefer a gender, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, pansexuality is the attraction to all genders (not just male and female), and polysexuality
is the attraction to some (not all) genders. A plethora of people identify as all three of these genders,
and yes they are real, and some do have preferences, others do not.
Basically, bisexuality erasure is a becoming a prevalent problem in the LGBTQIA+ community, as
well as the straight community. I ve had people tell me that bisexuals are just pretending, and then
there s the ever present rumor that bisexual people are just in it for the sex. I m here to say that s not
true. A bisexual person can like two, many, or all genders, and it has literally nothing to do with sex or
the amount of sex that person has.
However, some people within the LGBTQIA+ community feel like bisexuals are the most privileged
of the sexualities, because they can just identify as straight if they felt like it (an actual person has said
this to me before), and haven t felt the homophobia and hostility faced towards the community. But we
have. Bisexuals may not encounter as much homophobia and hostility, but we still get the constant,
Which do you prefer more, boys or girls? and the Well you have to like one more than the other, liking
two (or more) doesn t make

Psycho-Japanese War Essay
The Russo Japanese War really started in China and Korea who were weak compared to the restored
Japanese Empire that was expanding and brushing against Russian land. Russia and Japan each had
their empires butting up against each other while being mostly without defined border. The issues
could be taken back since 1792 when the Russia wanted to create a trading post in Japan and Japan
refused to do so. They would not hear of it since they viewed it as Russia attempting to encroach and
gain a foothold in mainland Japan. As the years passed, Russia tried multiple times to make an
agreement but the Shogun of Japan still would not budge, especially would not budge to a country that
was aggressively moving on their northern borders. In 1855, after ... Show more content on

This system was really just a money grabbing situation and China did not like having their money
flow bothered by the Japanese. Japan gave a display that they were now a true power in East Asia
however due to treaties and agreements with several European powers, it was agreed that Japan had to
relinquish the ports in China and that they could not attack without permission. To me this shows that
Europe was afraid of their revenues coming from Asia would be threatened. Since they couldn t
expanded without permission , it also put Russia on notice that Imperial Japan was now the
superpower of East Asia. An issue Japan seems to have taken is that the Russian Empire gained/
leased Port Arthur due to their influence and power. After the Boxer Rebellion in Manchuria, Russia
fully took over and occupied Manchuria with no intention of leaving soon. Tsar Nicholas said that it
was temporary and yet all plans of withdrawing ended up getting cancelled. The Japanese even made
offers like giving Russia full rights to Manchuria in exchange for Japan having full rights to the
Korean Peninsula, but they were all rejected. I don t think it would have been accepted anyway
because that would have ended all chances of Russia getting Korea to itself. The tensions escalated at

Dating Earth And A Theory Of Plate Tectonics
The article discusses Dating Earth and a theory of plate tectonics. In the beginning, the scientists
community was divided into two parts, where one part supported Christian believes about the
universal flood that was a proof of an existence of God and another group of scientists who rejected
theories of Catastrophism. The early geologist, «catastrophists», believed that «catastrophic events in
the past determined the geology of the Earth.» In that time because of the lack of evidence
catastrophists were not taken seriously enough. An alternative theory was called «uniformitarianism»
and a main idea is that the Earth is timeworn. According to the article, there were three main theories
which were doubted, such as a continental draft, the giant meteor that killed the dinosaurs, and
catastrophic flooding in the Channeled Scablands. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The theory explained how continents move and change their positions on the Earth. One of the
evidence was those rock formations and fossils from different continents were similar. Wegener was
not a professional geologist, but against any disbelieves he could prove that this theory of
Catastrophism is not a fairy tale. Nowadays a theory of «plate tectonics» became the leading theory
behind geology of modern time. The article gave a quote of Naomi Oreskes, who wrote «The theory
of continental drift did not violate the laws of nature...but in Schuchert s view it did challenge and
seriously threaten the uniformitarian principle that was at the root of his science.» So it means that this
theory changes a common way of thinking of majority of

  • 2. assata shakur Brandon Ross September 3, 2014 Africana Studies, SP12 Assata Shakur Paper Assata Shakur is a very strong and determined individual that refused to give up her beliefs and ideas to receive her freedom. When she was incarcerated, treated like an animal, beaten to a bloody pulp and lost all basic human rights, she only grew more stronger and determined. Shakur was a political prisoner and suffered because of her Black Panther Black Liberation Army affiliation. She spent six years in prison for crimes that she was not proven to have done or had any connection to. Most people would have given up and sold out to get their freedom back, she didn t because she simply took it back! Shakur s life changed dramatically on the night of ... A short time later Shakur was transported from the hospital to Middlesex County jail. It seemed like the middle of the night...A wheelchair was waiting for me. I figured they were taking me to jail said Shakur describing the experience. (Assata 45) Shakur s status as a political activist would affect her greatly in prison. The federal authorities wanted Shakur isolated from all the other prisoners because they did not want her to spread her radical ideas to any of the other prisoners which could possibly result in a revolt. Her cell was isolated from all the other prisoners and was patrolled by guards at all times. In prison, Shakur was subjected to the nihilistic ideas that she encountered on the outside. During this time blacks were treated as lower class citizens. Society wanted to keep African Americans in the same ghettos and isolate us from the nicer neighborhoods (domestic colonialism). They did this by racial profiling (Assata Shakur s arrest on the turnpike), police highly populating certain areas and raising prices to live in certain areas. These methods create a sense of self worthlessness inside of a person which often lead to crime. This trend often leads to African Americans being arrested and incarcerated. Once in prison, the system has now taken the little power that the person once had (the right to vote, speak etc.) The prisoner now ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Visual Rhetorical Rhetoric as theory allows the reader to analyze visual artifacts to produce a certain meaning that can be different to each individual. The theory can draw to attention otherization of people groups, how consumer culture in America can change poverty around the world, how southern culture can produce obesity and set bad morals for children, and create a call to action for the people. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Growing up, southerners are taught to be morally good and follow direction of their elders. One of the common televised and know practices is when parents say to their children you are not getting up from this table until you clean your plate. This one humorous and little statement has caused a dilemma. This commercial that Compassion aired completely obliterates the southern teaching. They are asking for people to give up meals and money to help fund these children. The southern culture has created bad habits that flow from generation to generation. Also, the south has the largest obesity rate in the nation. That statistic alone proves that southerners consume more than any other part of the country. These are the people that need to be targeted to give up meals, and money for Compassion International. Culture in the south takes food for granted and spends thousands upon thousands of dollars on food per year. The campaign urges people to just give $30 dollars a month to support a child. That is equivalent to not eating fast food as a family a couple of times a month, but the entitlement of the south is hard to break. This commercial brings to light the severity of what southerners live in and how unaware people are to the poverty of the world. Giving up going out to eat a couple of meals a month is more than ... • 4. Planets In Our Galaxy Essay The next variable fp can be specified through the documentation and discovery of planets in our galaxy. We have been able to determine through both observational techniques that nearly all planets in our galaxy are 1, 2, or 3 times the mass of earth also known as super earths, and occur at an incredibly frequent rate. In fact, these super earths are so frequent that each size has a third of a chance to be orbiting a star. With all three sizes considered there must be at least one earth or super earth sized planet per star. Following fp, the variable ne describes the fraction of planets per star that could support life. In my opinion, planets that are within the habitable zone of an F type star or below could support life. Any planet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to astrobio.net, F types stars more than double the habitable zone of our star, with this information I would conservatively say three planets could fit within the habitable zone of an F type star. Next, because mars is just out of the habitable zone of our solar system I will include it as a possible candidate for life. Therefore, I would argue that G type stars could host a max of two planets. Finally, I believe stars under G type could only host one habitable planet. More planets in each of these habitable zones would disrupt one another s orbit and end up expelling or destroying each other. The average of these different star types is two, which is my final estimate for the number of stars around a host star. Planets outside of the habitable zone could experience gravitational forces acting on the planet from another. Ideally, this action could heat the inside of the planet and stimulate volcanic activity and therefore life. We can see an example of this process on Jupiter s and Saturn s moons Europa and Enceladus. On them, scientists suspect that hydrothermal vents create enough heat to maintain a liquid sea below a thick layer of outer ice. However, I believe that action of this magnitude would largely be limited to much smaller moons able to remain stable at much closer distances to their host planet. Additional to a solar habitable zone, scientists believe ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When one talks about Dystopian subgenre, it envisions a time not so distant from the present that world is in an unpleasant time which can deal with either government fallen under a totalitarian rule or the environment is in a degradable state. There are two specific novels that fall under this subgenre: The Road and The Handmaid s Tale. The Road deals with the outcome of the environment in the United States after a nuclear outbreak, and The Handmaid s Tale deals with the idea of theocracy and the thin line that separates church and state, concerns that can make up a dystopian novel. The Road deals with the United States in the not so far future being damaged to an unrepairable state by unknown nuclear outbreak which is one concern that is focused on in a dystopian novel. The key issue presented in front of the management is the possible steps to be taken by the management in order to avoid such losses. Critical Thought The issue addressed by the accounting system of Dakota office products invites our attention to the premise of Activity Based costing methodology. We are certain about the fact that the accounting and reporting system at Dakota Office Product is inappropriate and is leading to the company making wrong decision ultimately leading to losses. This was apparent from the record where the company was able to increase its sales without a corresponding increase in the profits for that particular year. Activity based costing system is an approach which seeks to allocate the overhead cost to the products on a scientific and realistic basis. The existing system of allocating cost at Dakota Office products were inadequate in so much so that it was following an unreasonable basis for allocating the cost, which were known and visible, such as the desktop delivery cost. The existing system was suffering from oversight of some of the expenses. ABC costing system seeks to overcome the problem of oversight and make a more reasonable allocation of the costs. In the late1999, Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies of the United States released the report, To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System. The report cited the findings of a major study that found medical errors kill at least 44,000 and perhaps as many as 98,000 Americans in hospitals each year. Deaths due to preventable adverse events exceed the deaths attributable to motor vehicle accidents (43,458), breast cancer (42,297), or AIDS (l6, 5l6). Total national costs are estimated to be between $37.6 billion and $50 billion for these events. A depressing comparison of about 6,000 Americans die from workplace injuries every year and medication errors are estimated to account for about 7,000 of this deaths (Gray, E., Gray, I., Yodice P., Rezai, F., Fless, K.). Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) is the process of entering medication orders and other physician s instructions electronically using a computer based system to ensure standardized, legible and complete orders. Its implementation has been recommended to improve patient safety and outcomes primarily by reducing medication errors that usually arise from faulty prescriptions (Al Dorzi, Hasan M., Tamim, Hani M., Cherfan, Antoine, Hassan, Mohamad A., Taher, S. and Arabi, Y.). Ideology is a body of ideas concerning economic, social and political values and goals which posit action programmes for attaining these goals. To facilitate ideological analysis, however, the key is the fit between the images and texts in a specific media output, plus the manner thought and discussion on social and cultural issues. Questions, however, arise as to how the media content (shaped by ideologies) depict real life. This begs the question of function and ethics. The ideological analysis further attempts to answer questions about what the media messages depict of the society and its people. This underscores why politicians have long perceived mass media as a veritable channel of disseminating an ideology so that the society can mirror itself against what the media feeds it and thus be manipulated. This further begs the question of whether the media is a contributor or otherwise to societal problems in the face of political ideological dissemination. Furthermore, the media and ideology are interconnected in the following ways (Asemah, 2011): i. The media serves as a channel for communication of ideologies ii. One could reasonably think that the reason marriages are on the decline is that women are choosing not to get married or some other such tripe that ineffectively attempts to hide the truth of the matter. (Ayanna, G. 2010), (Dewitt.1992), (Rosenbloom, 2006), (Campbell, 2001) The actual reason for the decline in marriage rates is not because women don t want to get married (a bitter anthem recited in retaliation to men s rejection of marriage.) but due to The Marriage Strike. While the courts may grant the former spouses joint legal custody, the odds are nearly 40 to one of the wife winning physical custody (US Census Bureau. 2000). Once the couple is divorced, odds are at least even that the wife will interfere with the husband s visitation rights. Three quarters of divorced men surveyed say their ex wives have interfered with their visitation, and 40 percent of mothers studied admitted that they had done so and that they had generally acted to punish their exes (Rubin, 1997). Then, of course, there is the issue of financial losses due to court imposed payments. In the end, the wife will keep most of the couple s assets and the house. The husband will need to set up a new residence and pay at least a third of his take home pay to his ex in child support, on top of whatever alimony payments the courts impose on him. These can run as high as another third of his income. Add the cost of taxes to that and the man gets to keep exactly 13% of his take home pay (Rubin, 1997). Nevertheless, as bad as all this is, it would still make our hypothetical man the lucky one. To do this, the purposes for punishment will be examined, how and why this purpose of punishment has changed over time, the sociological and criminological theories that best explain this disparity, and finally the implications on society through these criminal justice trends. From both sets of data, it can be calculated that in the period of 2002 to 2012, the imprisonment rate increased 13.5 percent yet the violent crime and property crime rates decreased 26 percent and 35 percent respectively. Once the person has been found guilty, they are then sentenced by a judge with a certain purpose or purposes for the punishment. The main four purposes used are retribution, deterrence, rehabilitation and incapacitation. Retribution is defined by Mani as the offender must be punished simply because the wrongful act merits condemnation and punishment. (Reference). Deterrence is based on the idea that criminal behaviour can be deterred if punishment is swift, certain, and severe enough to counter the benefits or pleasure gained from committing crime. Taking a Look at Logistics Management The primary aim of logistics is to co ordinate the transportation, storage and handling of products as they move from the source of raw materials, through the manufacturing system to their final point of sale in a way that it meets customer requirements at minimum cost. In the past this cost has been defined in purely monetary terms. Recently the world has witnessed an increasing awareness about environmental and sustainability issues. This growing concern for the environment has a created pressure on companies to reduce their negative environmental impact. As defined by ISO14001, the environmental impact is a modification of the environment, negative or beneficial, resulting wholly or partially from environmental aspects of an organization . Since the transportation of goods leads to air and noise pollution, leads to fatal accidents sometimes and has significant impact on global warming, firms have been trying to render their supply chains and logistics operations more environmental friendly. In William Goldings, The Lord of the Flies, a group of school boys are involved in a plane crash that leaves them stranded on a deserted island. People in this world often choose to ignore this looming threat and live their lives as if this terminus does not exist. One does not fall into this trend category: A. E. Houseman. Emphasis was placed on analysing the relationship between violence and agricultural productivity and investments in the region using contextual analysis based on both primary and secondary data. The theoretical perspective that was adopted is the frustration aggression theory which states that people will always resort to violence/aggression whenever they are excessively frustrated. This theory was therefore employed to understand causes of the problem of violent conflict in the North East. It was established that violent conflict has caused a lot of problems for the people living in that region most especially with regards tofood security since most of the inhabitants of this region are subsistence farmers and since they have been displaced, cannot cultivate their farms to feed themselves. • 32. Sonnet X By John Donne Analysis Socrates once said: [...]For anything that men can tell, death may be the greatest good that can happen to them: but they fear it as if they knew quite well that it was the greatest of evils. And what is this but that shameful ignorance of thinking that we know what we do not know? ( Socrates ) Sonnet X by John Donne discusses the idea that people fear death without just cause, simply because humans are terrified of that which they cannot comprehend. In his poem, Donne communicates this messages by means of conceit, personification, and witty wordplay. Donne is known for writing metaphysical poetry; his writing included lots of conceits, and Sonnet X is no exception. The metaphysical conceit featured in this poem compares death to sleep. From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be, / Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow, (Donne. Lines 5 6) This couplet articulates that, because death is merely a stronger, much more permanent version of sleep, it should not be feared; if sleep is pleasurable, then why should death not be viewed similarly? After all, as Donne continues in lines 11 and 12, sleep induced by drugs such as opium, which is derived from poppies, and charms can provide rest akin to or even better than death. So why then, the speaker asks in line 12, is Death so prideful? The following mention of sleep takes a religious angle; One short sleep past, we wake eternally (Line 13) refers to the interim between a person s death and Judgement Day, when the soul proceeds to Heaven to live eternally, provided the person lived a righteous lifestyle. Thus, this line means that death is not the end, per se, but rather the beginning of eternal life in Heaven. While Donne was not the first to compare death and sleep, this conceit helps communicate that death should not be feared, for it is much the same as sleep, and marks the beginning of one s eternal stay in the Pearly Gates. Wordplay and wit are abundant in Sonnet X; in several instances, the word death is used in three different ways in the same line! The poem is an apostrophe, the speaker is directing his words at Death, so obviously, there is personification throughout. This, along with metaphors and other figures of speech, allows ... • 34. Intercultural Competency Paper Developing cultural competency is not always easy and it is not something that one acquires through birth. Instead, it is a developmental process that is nurtured over time. While the growth process may start off with a memorized list of acceptable and unacceptable behaviors that one is supposed to follow, true intercultural competence evolves when behaviors are internalized and occur naturally because they feel right (Medina LĂłpez Portillo, 2004, p. 315). Stress, anxiety, and difficulties are sometimes signs that an individual is making progress towards cross cultural deepening (Stephenson, 2002, p. 99). At an extreme, when individuals are overwhelmingly stressed in a new cultural environment, their failure to adapt is expressed at times by emotional and physical health issues (Li et al., 2013). The measurement of an individual s intercultural competence is a complex challenge. The literature references numerous assessment tools that have emerged over time but it would be difficult to identify any one particular tool as the best and there seems to be little agreement on what dimensions of intercultural learning should be tested (Deardorff, 2011; El Ganzoury, 2012; Godwin Jones, 2013). • 35. Justification Of Punishment Justified By Ted Honderinch s... Why punish? Is the use of punishment Justified? Ted Honderinch s Punishment: The supposed Justifications Revisited aim to answer these questions. Punishment is at the core of our punitive systems, therefore society needs to establish a well thought out moral explanation as to why we punish and what we aim to achieve with the use of punishment. Honderinch set out to analyze the supposed moral claims that justify the practice of punishment and to determine if they are satisfactory enough for the intentional infliction suffering and deprivation. What are the claims as to why punishment should be morally used? The author looks at three main justifications of punishment. Those who believe that the offender deserves to be chastised for his or her crime justify punishment by appealing to desert thereby retributive in nature thus backward looking. The justification of punishment on forward looking factors justifies punishment for its ability to prevent and reduce crime therefore through punishment the offender is capable of reform and rehabilitation. The third justification is the mixture of both justifications in which punishment is deserved for some past offences, and also it reduces crime. From these Justifications, it is clear that one cannot justify punishment without stating its aim. This paper presents a confrontation of two classic positions of the second type, namely the position of Hume and Scheler. The ultimate goal of this confrontation is metatheoretical particularly as it concerns the analysis of the relations between the idea of emotion and the idea of value in this kind of theory of value judgment. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hume on Passion and Value The relation between passion and value in Hume s philosophy has been repeatedly discussed. (3) In contrast to some contemporary writers, Hume devoted a lot of effort and space to the theory of passion before presenting his, based on emotion moral theory, in Book III of the Treatise. (4) However, as I believe, Hume s philosophy on the whole, contains not one, but two theories of passion. One of them is a theory of the genesis of passions from pains and pleasures. The second theory, on the other hand, refers to the group of passions which are after N. Kemp Smith called primary passions; and I will call it the descriptive theory of passion. The Treatise is dominated almost exclusively by the theory of genesis but the role of the descriptive theory in Enquiries is more important, and particularly in those places where Hume argues against hedonism and egoism in his theory of motivation. On the theory of genesis, passions are produced from pains and pleasures either directly or indirectly which, as it is well known, leads to Hume s distinction between direct and indirect passions. According to the descriptive theory, however, the situation is quite different. In their existence, the primary passions do not depend on pleasures and pains, on the contrary, pains and pleasures are produced by them. There is an interesting tension between these two theories in Hume s philosophy but this problem cannot be discussed here. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Grapevine Personal Statement One reason I would like to Volunteer at Baylor Scott White in Grapevine Is to get exposure to different medical fields inside the hospital. I know that this program is not a shadowing opportunity or anything of that nature. However, every time I step foot in a hospital I get extremely excited and ready to go to medical school. I am not only doing this for the experience though. One of the things that brings me the most joy in life is being able to help people. In fact, that is one of the reason s I want to go into the medical field. Something I hope to gain from this experience is learning more about the hospital environment. Once again I know this isn t a job shadowing opportunity but being able to be inside the hospital, I can potentially still learn a lot from observing my surroundings. Another thing I would like to be able to gain from this experience is to learn even more people skills than I already know. I have a job so I do have the people skills necessary to work, but I would love to learn more people skills and maybe some that are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 41. The Well Known African American Activist, Ida B. Wells The well known African American activist, Ida B. Wells was born on July 16, 1862, during the Civil War. The author, Mia Bay illustrated the life of Wells in her novel, To Tell the Truth Freely: The Life of Ida B. Wells Bay demonstrated Well s accomplishments as a free African American and the many struggles she faced after Reconstruction ended and the Jim Crow Laws were enforced. The events in her life were relatively distinct, but according to the Burns Belfry Museum and the historical marker labeled Freedman Town in Oxford, Mississippi, her experiences overall represented the social, economic, and political circumstances that the majority of African Americans faced in the southern United States during the thirty years, 1862 1892 from her birth in Holly Springs in 1862 through her decision to leave Memphis in 1892. The Civil War and the Thirteenth Amendment freed African Americans, providing them with more opportunities with education, jobs, and religion. Unfortunately reconstruction ended in 1877 when white southerners regained control of the state legislatures and reversed the progress made since 1865. Her parents raised Ida B. Wells to take education seriously. Her responsibilities consisted of going to school and learning everything she could. When she was a teenager, her aunt presented her with the opportunity to move to Memphis to further her education as well as obtain a job. Family Therapy In The Film The Laramie Project The film The Laramie Project discusses the truth behind the horrific death of one of the worst documented anti gay hate crimes in American history. Prior to his death, Matthew Shepard, was attending the University of Wyoming, he had a great interest in political affairs, and was known to be an outstanding member of the community. On the night of October 6, 1998, upon leaving a bar in Laramie, Wyoming, Matthew Shepard was robbed, tortured, continuously beaten and terrorized by Russel Henderson and Aaron McKinney. According to the transcripts from over 200 people in the town of Laramie reported that many individuals in this particular town were raised not to agree with homosexuality, although many of them also reported that even though they ... According to the American Psychological Association (APA), psychologists provide services with populations and in areas only within the boundaries of their competence, based on their education, training, supervised experience, consultation study, or professional experience, together with safeguarding my understanding of factors associated with age, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, etc. (APA, 2017, 2.01a, 2.01b). Along the same lines, psychologists do not engage in unfair discrimination or harassment based on age, gender, gender identify, sexual orientation, etc. (APA, 2017, 3.01, 3.03). Thus, although in this case I would be treating Matthew s parents or family, they were deeply affected by the outcome of a gruesome anti gay hate crime, therefore I would need to ensure that I would not be inclined to discriminate in any way. Furthermore, even though at the time of Matthew s assault there was not any legislation regarding hate crimes that referred to anti gay acts and same sex marriage was not yet legalized, as an ethical psychologist it is important to remain cognizant that regardless of any conflicts between ethics and the law or regulations, under no circumstances should psychologists use said law or regulations to justify or defend the ... • 43. Symbolism In William Jennings Bryan s The Wonderful... During the late 1800 s, a pervasive sense of melancholy permeated throughout the forgotten, dreary Midwestern United States. While the industrial revolution boosted the economy on the coasts, Midwestern farmers were victims of deflationary debt increases, exorbitant shipping and railroad rates, a high protective tariff, and a government that for the most part ignored them.1 Desperate circumstances moved the everyday American farmers to join together and voice their grievances. Instead of seeking federal aid or economic relief, they attempted to use the power of the ballot to achieve their goals.1 The united group of farmers used the Populist Party as a springboard to launch their complaints and eventually got their candidate, William Jennings Bryan, nominated for the presidential election of 1896 by the Democratic Party. L. Frank Baum, a newspaper writer who lived in a small prairie town in South Dakota, experienced the populist wave firsthand, attending Bryan s famous Cross of Gold speech in Chicago, and subtly incorporated many aspects of Bryan s campaign into his children s novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.2 Despite his own claim that this novel was written solely for the entertainment of the children of today , several historians have discovered that the book clearly reflects the culture of the time period in which it was written.3 By symbolically representing the struggles of the everyday working man, Bryan s political enemies, and the campaign for free silver, Baum ... • 44. Bisexuality Erasure Bisexuality Erasure Saige Brey Aug 15, 2015 When you hear the term bisexual , what comes to mind? For some it s what they identify with in the LGBTQIA+, for others it s a confusing and broad term that somewhat covers their sexuality, and for others it just seems like a foreign and strange idea. As a bisexual, I ve heard the question, Well which gender do you prefer more? several times. My answer to that is usually along the lines of neither , which leads to some confused looks or even some of disbelief. To start, bisexuality is not a Well, you re either straight or gay! Pick one! . Bisexuality is within the LGBTQIA+ and sexuality spectrum, but it is neither a preference of any of the genders. For some, yes they prefer a gender, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, pansexuality is the attraction to all genders (not just male and female), and polysexuality is the attraction to some (not all) genders. A plethora of people identify as all three of these genders, and yes they are real, and some do have preferences, others do not. Basically, bisexuality erasure is a becoming a prevalent problem in the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as the straight community. I ve had people tell me that bisexuals are just pretending, and then there s the ever present rumor that bisexual people are just in it for the sex. I m here to say that s not true. A bisexual person can like two, many, or all genders, and it has literally nothing to do with sex or the amount of sex that person has. However, some people within the LGBTQIA+ community feel like bisexuals are the most privileged of the sexualities, because they can just identify as straight if they felt like it (an actual person has said this to me before), and haven t felt the homophobia and hostility faced towards the community. But we have. Bisexuals may not encounter as much homophobia and hostility, but we still get the constant, Which do you prefer more, boys or girls? and the Well you have to like one more than the other, liking two (or more) doesn t make ... • 45. Psycho-Japanese War Essay The Russo Japanese War really started in China and Korea who were weak compared to the restored Japanese Empire that was expanding and brushing against Russian land. Russia and Japan each had their empires butting up against each other while being mostly without defined border. The issues could be taken back since 1792 when the Russia wanted to create a trading post in Japan and Japan refused to do so. They would not hear of it since they viewed it as Russia attempting to encroach and gain a foothold in mainland Japan. As the years passed, Russia tried multiple times to make an agreement but the Shogun of Japan still would not budge, especially would not budge to a country that was aggressively moving on their northern borders. To me this shows that Europe was afraid of their revenues coming from Asia would be threatened. Since they couldn t expanded without permission , it also put Russia on notice that Imperial Japan was now the superpower of East Asia. An issue Japan seems to have taken is that the Russian Empire gained/ leased Port Arthur due to their influence and power. After the Boxer Rebellion in Manchuria, Russia fully took over and occupied Manchuria with no intention of leaving soon. Tsar Nicholas said that it was temporary and yet all plans of withdrawing ended up getting cancelled. The Japanese even made offers like giving Russia full rights to Manchuria in exchange for Japan having full rights to the Korean Peninsula, but they were all rejected. I don t think it would have been accepted anyway because that would have ended all chances of Russia getting Korea to itself. The tensions escalated at the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Dating Earth And A Theory Of Plate Tectonics The article discusses Dating Earth and a theory of plate tectonics. In the beginning, the scientists community was divided into two parts, where one part supported Christian believes about the universal flood that was a proof of an existence of God and another group of scientists who rejected theories of Catastrophism. The early geologist, «catastrophists», believed that «catastrophic events in the past determined the geology of the Earth.» In that time because of the lack of evidence catastrophists were not taken seriously enough. An alternative theory was called «uniformitarianism» and a main idea is that the Earth is timeworn. According to the article, there were three main theories which were doubted, such as a continental draft, the giant meteor that killed the dinosaurs, and catastrophic flooding in the Channeled Scablands. ... One of the evidence was those rock formations and fossils from different continents were similar. Wegener was not a professional geologist, but against any disbelieves he could prove that this theory of Catastrophism is not a fairy tale. Nowadays a theory of «plate tectonics» became the leading theory behind geology of modern time. The article gave a quote of Naomi Oreskes, who wrote «The theory of continental drift did not violate the laws of nature...but in Schuchert s view it did challenge and seriously threaten the uniformitarian principle that was at the root of his science.» So it means that this theory changes a common way of thinking of majority of ...
