True Hero In Jack And The Beanstalk
What do you say to these beans; they re magical, plant them overnight and This quote is from the
story Jack and the Beanstalk . In this story, Jack and his mother are poor all they have to live off is
milk from their cow. When MIlky white stops milking Jack is off to sell her. He trades the cow for
some magical beans that grow into a beanstalk to find a man eating giant. Although Jack seems good,
in reality he is not a true hero. Jack proves he is very untrustworthy in this story. On page 143 Jack
accepts the trade with a stranger for beans. This illustrates Jack being untrustworthy because Jack s
mom thinks Jack is going to the market cow for money. Instead he trades the cow for some worthless
beans. Now Jack and his mom do not have anything

The Cow Taught Me How
The Cow Taught Me How
Life is dangerous, that s what makes it interesting. John Twelve Hawks
The best thing I ever did for myself was throw a stick at a cow. Not an overly extravagant
accomplishment, but I certainly learned a lot from it. Just a little over six years into the world, on a
day so hot I could practically taste burnt air, my father took my two sisters and me down to the barn.
It wasn t the most attractive place in the world, but to my eyes it was an adventure waiting to happen.
Amid mountainous hay bales and rolling seas of grass, I eagerly awaited the chance to seek out every
little thing in this field.
As soon as dad set us loose to explore, he began to cut a few trees down to make firewood. I sprung

My dad was out of reach; with his chainsaw in hand and the concentration he was using to cut down
trees for kindling, it was unlikely he d hear me yelling for him. I tried anyway. Dad! I called, cupping
my hands around my mouth. I tried again and again, but I didn t succeed. Eventually, I resorted to
crossing my arms and huffing in annoyance. Now it was all up to me. It was almost like a superhero
set up I, the favored protagonist, the cows the nefarious villains, and my sisters the damsels in distress.
My feet bounded forward in a blaze of six year old glory. The glitzy rainbows on my tennis shoes
shone in the sun, my ponytail whipped my face, and my body moved onwards; ready for action. With
careful precision I scanned the ground, looking for some sort of weapon. Since there isn t much of an
arsenal in a cow field, I sought out a stick. And what a wonderful stick it was! The pair of hands that
usually picked up toys and Cheerios snatched the small branch. Putting my entire body into motion, I
let my weapon fly. My body s momentum sent it in a direct line; hurtling towards the target. My throw
was decently aimed, and the stick struck home on an unfortunate cow s behind. Time crawled to a stop
and the branch seemed to hang in the air for a moment before clattering to the ground. One beat of
silence. Two. Suddenly, the beast turned its head, black eyes seemingly pinning me in place. I
probably would ve started crying and begging for mercy had I not

Marsalis Phenomenon Analysis
Despite this turn over, the pattern of moving from one style to the next benefited postmodern jazz
musicians as they were able to capitalize upon the apparent open mindedness from the public to the
varied methods of musical expression (358). Through the help of the Association for the Advancement
of Creative Musicians (AACM), musicians were able to find performing opportunities, rehearsal
space, and other career support (358). The first president of the organization, pianist Richard Abrams,
gathered musicians such as Anthony Braxton, and Lester Bowie to produce work that focused on the
qualities of sound as opposed to conventional delineations of harmony, melody, and rhythm (358).
Many artists from the organization came to make their mark on postmodernism as their work reflected
a breakdown of styles into their constituent elements, sometimes focusing on one isolated aspect while
at other times combining the pieces into surprising new wholes (359). Artists such as Wynton Marsalis
took the spotlight in the supplemental reading for the thirteenth week. The article The Wynton

only through his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

response to such criticisms, Marsalis knew all of his music was new, not only to him but to his
generation. His music was heavily influenced by the African American culture much like artists both
before and after Marsalis. This is where the articles keynote came in as the spirit of jazz is the spirit of

What to Do After Graduation in Major in Success by Patrick...
There is a majority of university students worldwide who have something in common: they have no
idea what they will do after they graduate. Some students may have several ideas came out, but they
never make them come true. There are plenty of people who have difficulty to know what they are
passionate in, and even they can do but most never have the extraordinary drive necessary to go for
their dreams. At this difficult time, there is a book walked to me, Major in Success written by Patrick
Combs, which is a book that is to help people find their true dream job and become successful, and
also it helped me find the true purpose of studying in university. This book pointed out that doing what
you enjoy propels you to success . It means doing what you enjoy is the core to find your dream job. If
one has a job that pays well but he never get happiness from it, and instead of fears, tears and no
cheers. He also brings their fears from work to their lives and families and makes these people who
are outside of his job feel sad and then, that will destroy a big and happy environment. This book tells
people how to make their dreams come true. People who follow their dreams are the meaning of living
in the world and the way to get happiness. And everyone has this ability to achieve this goal; what
they need to do is only to possess extraordinary drive. From the book, the author says repeatedly that
when people get graduated, no one cares about your GPA. Patrick Combs said that

A profession may be defined as an occupation in which the members use their acquired knowledge
and experience to solve some problems that may be faced within the society. From this definition, it is
seen that different elements need to be satisfied to a trade to be considered as a profession. Professions
provide vital and unique services to the different constituencies that they serve. The provision of
service is based on acquired knowledge and experience meaning that professionals apply their

The culture shapes the institutional mission, goals and values, and determines the parameters of
operation of the Army. The first element of the American Army culture is ethic. This is influenced by
the artifacts and hierarchical manner in which the Army is structured. Soldiers are required to bring
dignity and honor to themselves and to the nation. The actions of the Army s strategic leaders are
determined by the established laws of the United States. The second element of culture is respect for
the right and dignity of other people. The different operations conducted by the Army should consider
the rights and dignity of others and the Army should not be seen to be infringing on these rights. Even
in enemy territory, the target is always the adversary and the Army always tries as much as possible
not to expose innocent civilians of the enemy territory to danger. The Soldiers are always trained to
protect the political independence of the collective American society. This is to mean that the nation
has a right of holding political opinions within the geopolitical world and no citizen of the nation
should be exposed to threats due to the political stands of the nation. The other element of Army
culture is that evaluations are always performed before the Soldiers are released to engage in war. All
these values help in collective and individual development of Soldiers (U.S. Army,

countless drug related deaths and causes states to spend billions of dollars to combat drug trafficking.
Drugs are shipped in by sea, air, automobile, and even smuggled in by person. These drugs are

Administration is taking action to provide a balanced approach on. how to addresses the Nation s drug
problem and the effects on its communities. According to Abramsky (2009), the Obama administration
is moving away from a tough on crime strategy and toward one that favors treatment over punishment.
According to Kristof (2009), the legalization of drugs is another solution to drug trafficking. With
drugs more readily available, at lower prices and higher levels of potency many law enforcement

Somali Pirates and the Response of The United States Essay
To begin, pirates have been prowling the seas as far back as ancient times, such as the Phoenicians and
Greeks in the Mediterranean. As well Muslim piracy as Jihad has existed since the 17th Century along
the Barbary Coast of North Africa.2 These pirates were known as Barbary corsairs, and they would
attack ships from Christian countries, seizing their ships and, and selling the sailors into slavery.
Today, Somali pirates are seizing ships and taking hostages for ransom along the waters off the coast
of Somali and the Gulf of Aden.
The root of the Somali pirates was established then put into motion after the Somali Civil War and the
fall of the Barre regime in 1991, the last functioning government.4 Along with the government, also ...

Because of the poverty, lack of employment, environmental hardship, pitifully low incomes, reduction
of pastoralist and maritime resources due to drought and illegal fishing and a volatile security and

pirate trade is easy to do; there is no real fear of their targeted victims shooting at them, because by
International agreement, civilian vessels cannot have guns.7 The money a pirate earns is great, and has

Despite growth returning to the world economy following the recession of the last three years, one
source of risk is economic risk as it remains significant. The recession underlined a structural shift to a
low demand growth environment in the developed world. The main risk is that the business will fail.
Despite their name, corporate bonds are not the same as fixed term savings bonds issued by banks.
The key difference is that they are not underwritten by the deposit protection scheme, the Financial

Ireland. This was about the same time North Carolina became a royal colony. She married William
Darragh, a family friend and member of the clergy, in 1753. They moved to Philadelphia a few years
later, settling into a large Quaker community. William became a tutor and Lydia found work as a

being pacifists, though the Darraghs secretly supported the rebels and their cause. The plot thickened
as British troops marched into Philadelphia in 1777. The following October General Washington
failed to recapture the city, and his troops retreated to Whitemarsh. The day after, Major John Andre

her to stay in her home, though the youngest of the children were sent to their relatives outside the

By contrast, software defined radio technology provides an efficient and comparatively inexpensive
solution to this problem, using software upgrades. SDR defines a collection of hardware and software
technologies where some or all of the radio s operating functions are implemented through modifiable
software or firmware operating on programmable processing technologies.
1.2 A Brief History of SDR
An SDR is a radio in which the properties of carrier frequency, signal bandwidth, modulation, and
network access are defined by software. Today s modern SDR also implements any necessary
cryptography; forward error correction (FEC) coding; and source coding of voice, video, or data in
software as well.
The roots of SDR design go back to 1987, when Air Force Rome Labs (AFRL) funded the
development of a programmable modem as an evolutionary step beyond the architecture of the
integrated communications, navigation, and identification architecture (ICNIA).
Today s SDR, in contrast, is a general purpose device in which the same radio tuner and processors are
used to implement many waveforms at many frequencies. The advantage of this approach is that the
equipment is more versatile and cost effective.

Why Is Underage Drinking And Driving Bad
The Drink and driving is bad America s worst violation of the rules of driving on the road and above

Essay about Critical Response to the Turn of the Screw
Henry James novella the Turn of the Screw is a highly ambiguous piece of fiction. Set in Edwardian
England, a very naïve woman is left in charge of two young children. The beautiful Bly however
appears to be hiding a few dark secrets. The appearance of two ghosts plays on the governess mind,
she comes to the conclusion the children are in danger and being possessed by these two horrors.
Throughout the novella James successfully creates a mystical atmosphere, his ambiguous style forces
us to think twice about what is written and decide for ourselves whether or not this is purely a ghost
story or something far more sinister. However after several reads and a close look behind the words, it
becomes clear that the ghosts that haunt the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A woman as fanciful and dreamy as this in such a position is not going to survive.
As we continue to read this novella we must notice the governess wild and unnecessary use of
elaborate adjectives to describe the simplest of things. Her style of writing in itself is quite romantic
and poetic, full of metaphors and oxymorons. However sometimes her choice of words is so
prompting we must take a closer look into perhaps a double or triple meaning. When she first sights
the ghost of Peter Quint on top of the house she is able to describe his position with amazing precision
in note of the fact she was some distance from him and her sighting was quite brief. She comments he
stood at an angle, tall and erect... he fixed me with a hard gaze and when yet again she confides in Mrs
Grouse she gives a very elaborate description commenting on his tight red curls, pale face, long in
shape, small tiny whickers, darker arched eyebrows and the fact that he had no hat . The governess
even uses phrases such as the intercourse of our conversation added to the intensity of our meeting in
description of everyday things such as normal conversation. The governess certainly has deeper
meaning behind most of her words.
The last and most important point in regards to the governess repressed sexual desires is her highly
inappropriate and unprofessional behaviour with both her pupils, in particular Miles. There is a
constant underlying power struggle between the two. The

Role Of Dharna In The Ramayana
The Ramayana is an Indian myth used to explain the concept of dharma. Dharma is very important in
Indian culture and most of the characters in The Ramayana either accept their dharma or deny it. The
myth can be broken up into three parts the separation, initiation and return. The story also shows all
four functions of a myth. First, lets find out what the real meaning of Dharma is and how it is
portrayed in The Ramayana.
Dharma is defined as the religious and moral duties of an individual; duties vary according to class,
occupation, gender or age; according to slide five of The Ramayana lecture PowerPoint. It is also one
of the four main principles that guide individuals in their Hindu beliefs. It is important to think of
Dharma as a way of life. One must always fulfill one s duties, live by society s laws, and always
behave appropriately according to one s station in life, by doing this an individual is earning merit for
their next life as reincarnation is one of the other main principles in Hinduism. The moral focus in The
Ramayana is dharma and the story is used to teach people about dharma.
Many of the characters in The Ramayana try to uphold their dharma. The Hero of the story Rama tries
to uphold his dharma by being a good son to his parents by following his father s wishes even after his
death, and a good husband to his wife by never stopping to look for her until he avenges her capture.
Joseph Campbell states in the hero s adventure that A hero properly is

Symptom Management Theory ( Smt ) Of The University Of...
Symptom Management Theory The symptom management theory (SMT) of the University of
California, San Francisco (UCSF), was revised by its faculty and students in 2001 (Smith Liehr,
2014). According to Dodd et al. (2001), the subjective experience that suggests alterations in an
individual s functioning, sensation, and cognition is called a symptom. Dodd et al. state that their
theory provides a nonspecific symptom management model to guide nursing practice and research.
The SMT has three overlapping circles which contain the three domains of nursing science, also
known as concepts of metaparadigm of nursing. The three nursing science domains are the person, the
environment, and health illness. In the theory s model, the dimensions are affected by the three
nursing science domains (Dodd et al., 2001).
According to Dodd et al. (2001), there are three dimensions included in the SMT. First is symptom
experience, which includes the person s viewpoint, evaluation, and reaction to the symptom. The
second dimension is symptom management strategies, which are interventions that are intended to
postpone and reduce, if not able to totally prevent, a negative outcome from symptom experience. The
interventions that are done may be focused on resolving one or multiple components of the person s
symptoms to attain the planned outcomes. The last dimension is the symptom status outcome, which is
a result of interventions done during symptom management strategies. Multiple aspects are

Benjamin Franklin s Virtues To Create A Perfect Moral Society
One of Benjamin Franklin s goals in life was to create a perfectly moral society. Is there even such a
thing as a perfectly moral society? How would one go about forming this unheard of thing? Franklin
observed people and used his own knowledge to form his list of thirteen virtues, behaviors that
conduct high moral standards. Could these virtues create a perfect society? In order for Franklin s plan
to work, every person must follow all thirteen of these virtues. A benefit comes from each thing
Franklin listed. One of these benefits is creating good citizens. A good citizen is someone who
respects their town, government, and fellow peers. Temperance and moderation are good qualities to
have because that means everyone can control themselves. Silence also comes in handy because it can
keep people from getting offended or hurt by another person s words. Order keeps everything running
smoothly, even in time of disaster. Tranquility can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Chasity is one of the few I would choose to remove. While it does show self control, I do not believe
that determines if you are a good citizen. I also believe moderation could be removed because it is
closely related with temperance. Silence is another thing that can be good at certain times, but can also
be bad at other times. Sometimes people need to speak their opinions; otherwise, nothing would ever
be changed. Everything would stay exactly the same and I don t think they would be good for society.
Cleanliness is also another virtue that does not relate to being a good citizen. While it does have
something to do with your character and appearance, it does not affect your morals and ability to be a
good citizen. These are the only revisions I would make to Franklin s plan. I see no need for anything
else to be removed or added. He covered the basics, but in some sense he went a little overboard.
Although these are good qualities to have, do they make you a good human

How ELT Has Helped Make English the Global Language
How ELT has Helped Make English the Global Language
Standardization of English Controversies It is not difficult to determine why English began its rise as
the predominant language in the world. Britain, the progenitor of the language, once bragged that the
Sun never set on the British Empire. This is true in that the empire stretched to all areas of the globe,
and the nation of England had influence beyond just its possessions. Because the conquerors spoke
English, many of the citizens learned to at least use a few simple phrases that would allow them to
take the better jobs offered by the English. This same scenario has happened since the United States
has become the world superpower. In areas such as commerce and science, it is almost non negotiable
that a person has to learn English to survive. The global climate dictates that there must be a single
language which everyone can turn to as that spoken in a particular discipline. Because of the economic
superiority of the United States over the past 50 years, and the fact that the US has also dominated
many fields within science, English is spoken by many people around the world. However, it is a
second language. The fact is that English is not the preeminent first language. Chinese Mandarin has
far more native speakers than any other language in the world (Lovgren, 2004). Of course, just the
sheer volume of Chinese make this a certainty, but many of these people still speak English as a
second language because

Reza Khan, now firmly in power, began a period of rapid modernization. Modernization is defined as

less successful than Ataturk in forging a strong national ideology because Ataturk was able to control

The Importance Of Life Changing Experiences In My Life
Life altering experiences can occur in the blink of an eye or over a longer time. The experiences that I
went through in 2011 are by far the most interesting in my life so far. Please join me as I reminisce on
times that have past but remain engrained in my mind. From leaving the comforts of the dreary state
of Washington to living inside stone walls in a foreign land. I lay in my hollow empty shell of a room
as I look at the clock tick away so loud that I felt it in my hands. I knew all those nights of staying up
late anticipating the day to arrive like a child awaiting to open Christmas presents had finally come.
We stumbled our ways into the bus with two bags two are names and a metal instrument of defense by
our side. Mindless chatter arose in the bus, I began to stare out the window as I watched sons say
goodbye to their dads, Wives to their husbands, and husbands to their wives. Senseless communication
like one that you would make with a stranger at a coffee shop waiting to place your over priced coffee
order. The wheels began to roll and the sun began to set. As we pulled up to the tarmac everything fell
silent as if someone had set the world on mute. We ambled our way across the tarmac and all you
could hear is boots rubbing on the cold wet gravel. Ample seating available on flight as we knew that
it was not one for leisure. The wheels came up we zoomed skyward and a gloomy day turned upside
down as we broke through the crowds into a vast sunny place that seemed to make everything alright
in the world for that moment. The mindset once we arrived to Victory Base Complex in Baghdad had
changed dramatically. Life here was simple and never changing unless we received some unwanted
fire work display by the enemy. Our living quarters where shared very much like a dog kennel with
two dogs trying to coexist. But who are we to complain those that came before us had it much worst.
As you exited the living quarters in turned into a labyrinth of stone walls and other living units
surrounded. The ground which you use to be mostly sand is now covered with rocks for better
traction. In turn it did not provide better traction it felt more like quick sand. The bathrooms are shared
by approximately five hundred

The Financial Success Of A Company s Social And Economic...
The biggest opposition to the protection of these wilderness areas is logging companies, who profit off
clear cutting timber as quickly and efficiently as possible. These companies then sell off the deforested
land and move their operations elsewhere. Clear cutting forests can have some benefits in specific
instances, such as preventing the spread of disease or saving millions of dollars in Wildland
firefighting costs ( Biodiversity and the Cost of Clear Cutting Musicians for Forests, 2015).
Unfortunately, these timber clear cutting operations come at a cost to taxpayers, local ecosystems, and
to loggers themselves. I can acknowledge that the financial success of a company has social and
economic benefits within human society. However, I believe that allowing a company to profit at the
expense of our ecological environment, degrading the very foundations of terrestrial life, is antithetical
to ethical behavior and human prosperity.
The following section outlines the economic, ecological, and social costs of clear cut logging in the
Northern United States. I believe that the costs far outweigh any good that politicians, lobbyists, or
logging companies could argue come from aggressive clear cut logging operations. In 1993 logging on
public lands in the northern Rockies (Region One) by the United States Forest Service cost the
government between $100 million and $200 million more than the amount received for the sale of the
timber (Bass, 1996). Compare this with the $2.5

  • 3. The Cow Taught Me How The Cow Taught Me How Life is dangerous, that s what makes it interesting. John Twelve Hawks The best thing I ever did for myself was throw a stick at a cow. Not an overly extravagant accomplishment, but I certainly learned a lot from it. Just a little over six years into the world, on a day so hot I could practically taste burnt air, my father took my two sisters and me down to the barn. It wasn t the most attractive place in the world, but to my eyes it was an adventure waiting to happen. Amid mountainous hay bales and rolling seas of grass, I eagerly awaited the chance to seek out every little thing in this field. As soon as dad set us loose to explore, he began to cut a few trees down to make firewood. I sprung into the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My dad was out of reach; with his chainsaw in hand and the concentration he was using to cut down trees for kindling, it was unlikely he d hear me yelling for him. I tried anyway. Dad! I called, cupping my hands around my mouth. I tried again and again, but I didn t succeed. Eventually, I resorted to crossing my arms and huffing in annoyance. Now it was all up to me. It was almost like a superhero set up I, the favored protagonist, the cows the nefarious villains, and my sisters the damsels in distress. My feet bounded forward in a blaze of six year old glory. The glitzy rainbows on my tennis shoes shone in the sun, my ponytail whipped my face, and my body moved onwards; ready for action. With careful precision I scanned the ground, looking for some sort of weapon. Since there isn t much of an arsenal in a cow field, I sought out a stick. And what a wonderful stick it was! The pair of hands that usually picked up toys and Cheerios snatched the small branch. Putting my entire body into motion, I let my weapon fly. My body s momentum sent it in a direct line; hurtling towards the target. My throw was decently aimed, and the stick struck home on an unfortunate cow s behind. Time crawled to a stop and the branch seemed to hang in the air for a moment before clattering to the ground. One beat of silence. Two. Suddenly, the beast turned its head, black eyes seemingly pinning me in place. I probably would ve started crying and begging for mercy had I not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Marsalis Phenomenon Analysis Despite this turn over, the pattern of moving from one style to the next benefited postmodern jazz musicians as they were able to capitalize upon the apparent open mindedness from the public to the varied methods of musical expression (358). Through the help of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), musicians were able to find performing opportunities, rehearsal space, and other career support (358). The first president of the organization, pianist Richard Abrams, gathered musicians such as Anthony Braxton, and Lester Bowie to produce work that focused on the qualities of sound as opposed to conventional delineations of harmony, melody, and rhythm (358). Many artists from the organization came to make their mark on postmodernism as their work reflected a breakdown of styles into their constituent elements, sometimes focusing on one isolated aspect while at other times combining the pieces into surprising new wholes (359). Artists such as Wynton Marsalis took the spotlight in the supplemental reading for the thirteenth week. The article The Wynton Marsalis Phenomenon , elaborated upon just how he truly was a role model to musicians. This was not only through his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His music was heavily influenced by the African American culture much like artists both before and after Marsalis. Silence also comes in handy because it can keep people from getting offended or hurt by another person s words. Order keeps everything running smoothly, even in time of disaster. Tranquility can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Chasity is one of the few I would choose to remove. While it does show self control, I do not believe that determines if you are a good citizen. I also believe moderation could be removed because it is closely related with temperance. Silence is another thing that can be good at certain times, but can also be bad at other times. Sometimes people need to speak their opinions; otherwise, nothing would ever be changed. Everything would stay exactly the same and I don t think they would be good for society. Cleanliness is also another virtue that does not relate to being a good citizen. While it does have something to do with your character and appearance, it does not affect your morals and ability to be a good citizen. These are the only revisions I would make to Franklin s plan. I see no need for anything else to be removed or added. He covered the basics, but in some sense he went a little overboard. • 28. Compare And Contrast Harris And Jeffery Have you ever heard of a slave man that tries to get his own master to buy his betrothed? From what we read in class, in a story it talks about how a slave man begs his master to please buy his betrothed, but it turned out that Dorcas was sold with a whole family. In the meanwhile, Jeffery s master only wanted Dorcas not the whole family that was with her. While on the other story, it talks about how a group of slaves got caught hidden in a barn. While they was trying to escape for their freedom, a man asked if he could help them. That they could hide in his barn because if someone caught them escaping that then they would probably be beat to death. • 33. How ELT Has Helped Make English the Global Language How ELT has Helped Make English the Global Language Standardization of English Controversies It is not difficult to determine why English began its rise as the predominant language in the world. Britain, the progenitor of the language, once bragged that the Sun never set on the British Empire. This is true in that the empire stretched to all areas of the globe, and the nation of England had influence beyond just its possessions. Because the conquerors spoke English, many of the citizens learned to at least use a few simple phrases that would allow them to take the better jobs offered by the English. This same scenario has happened since the United States has become the world superpower. In areas such as commerce and science, it is almost non negotiable that a person has to learn English to survive. The global climate dictates that there must be a single language which everyone can turn to as that spoken in a particular discipline. Because of the economic superiority of the United States over the past 50 years, and the fact that the US has also dominated many fields within science, English is spoken by many people around the world. However, it is a second language. The fact is that English is not the preeminent first language. Chinese Mandarin has far more native speakers than any other language in the world (Lovgren, 2004). Of course, just the sheer volume of Chinese make this a certainty, but many of these people still speak English as a second language because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. The Importance Of Life Changing Experiences In My Life Life altering experiences can occur in the blink of an eye or over a longer time. The experiences that I went through in 2011 are by far the most interesting in my life so far. Please join me as I reminisce on times that have past but remain engrained in my mind. From leaving the comforts of the dreary state of Washington to living inside stone walls in a foreign land. I lay in my hollow empty shell of a room as I look at the clock tick away so loud that I felt it in my hands. I knew all those nights of staying up late anticipating the day to arrive like a child awaiting to open Christmas presents had finally come. We stumbled our ways into the bus with two bags two are names and a metal instrument of defense by our side. Mindless chatter arose in the bus, I began to stare out the window as I watched sons say goodbye to their dads, Wives to their husbands, and husbands to their wives. Senseless communication like one that you would make with a stranger at a coffee shop waiting to place your over priced coffee order. The wheels began to roll and the sun began to set. As we pulled up to the tarmac everything fell silent as if someone had set the world on mute. We ambled our way across the tarmac and all you could hear is boots rubbing on the cold wet gravel. Ample seating available on flight as we knew that it was not one for leisure. The wheels came up we zoomed skyward and a gloomy day turned upside down as we broke through the crowds into a vast sunny place that seemed to make everything alright in the world for that moment. The mindset once we arrived to Victory Base Complex in Baghdad had changed dramatically. Life here was simple and never changing unless we received some unwanted fire work display by the enemy. Our living quarters where shared very much like a dog kennel with two dogs trying to coexist. But who are we to complain those that came before us had it much worst. As you exited the living quarters in turned into a labyrinth of stone walls and other living units surrounded. The ground which you use to be mostly sand is now covered with rocks for better traction. In turn it did not provide better traction it felt more like quick sand. • 41. The Financial Success Of A Company s Social And Economic... The biggest opposition to the protection of these wilderness areas is logging companies, who profit off clear cutting timber as quickly and efficiently as possible. These companies then sell off the deforested land and move their operations elsewhere. Clear cutting forests can have some benefits in specific instances, such as preventing the spread of disease or saving millions of dollars in Wildland firefighting costs ( Biodiversity and the Cost of Clear Cutting Musicians for Forests, 2015). Unfortunately, these timber clear cutting operations come at a cost to taxpayers, local ecosystems, and to loggers themselves. I can acknowledge that the financial success of a company has social and economic benefits within human society. However, I believe that allowing a company to profit at the expense of our ecological environment, degrading the very foundations of terrestrial life, is antithetical to ethical behavior and human prosperity. The following section outlines the economic, ecological, and social costs of clear cut logging in the Northern United States. I believe that the costs far outweigh any good that politicians, lobbyists, or logging companies could argue come from aggressive clear cut logging operations. In 1993 logging on public lands in the northern Rockies (Region One) by the United States Forest Service cost the government between $100 million and $200 million more than the amount received for the sale of the timber (Bass, 1996). The Innovator s Dilemma describes how companies can stumble if they are not prepared to confront certain types of market disruptions. The author, Clayton Christensen, illustrates this message by using insights from the hard disk drive industry and explaining nine specific failures of strong companies. Companies known for innovations and execution that most managers have admired and strive to emulate. Specifically, Christensen discusses how the logical, experienced decisions of management that are critical to the success of their companies are also the reasons why they lose their position of leadership. (Christensen, 1997.) Christensen s message is quite prevalent in almost all industries. In fact, I work within the restaurant industry and we are currently facing an upcoming disruptive innovation called the fast casual segment. The fast casual segment is positioned somewhere between fast food restaurants and casual dining restaurants. Technically, being the hybrid of the two concepts, providing counter service and offering more customized, freshly prepared food. The fast casual segment has already disrupted the fast food industry.
