The Rule Of The Franciscan Order
The Rule of the Franciscan Order
Francis of Assisi is an icon of poverty and reform in the Catholic Church, because his lifestyle
encouraged the Church and especially the hierarchy of his time to change almost entirely. He can
be perceived as a prophet of his time who revolutionized from his very being a drastic change,
because with his life as an example he went from words to actions. Francis was born into a wealthy
family in Assisi; he had everything a boy of his time could ask for. Francis experienced some time
alone in a prison cell, it was after that time that he begins to feel dissatisfaction with kind of life he
was living and began to grow a spiritual maturation.
Francis received a revelation about his mission and found that the key to his life was his
uncompromising attempt to imitate Christ through absolute poverty, humility and simplicity.
Medieval Sourcebook: The Rule of the Franciscan Order is a source found at Fordham University
online sourcebooks. The source has as the main focus The Rule of the Franciscan Order . It
gives details in regards to the history of the founding of the order and what was the major
contribution of St. Francis in establishing the order of the lesser brothers . St. Francis was the lead
figure which made him a venerable personality in the Middle Ages. The Franciscan order was
founded by St. Francis of Assisi. Although there were other movements created at the time, almost
unwittingly Francis became the leader of this Christian

Urban Legend Of The Bloody Mary
I m here to tell you about the urban legend of the Bloody Mary. Bloody Mary is a urban legend
that first originated in in the early 1960s as an adolescent party game, and the person would take
a candle or a flashlight and go into a dark room and look into a mirror and say a chant, The exact
chant is unknown . After you say the chant a unknown amount of times something would appear
and or happen. For example in the Poems of Robert Burns, published in 1787: Is a great example of
a bloody mary ritual.
Take a candle, and go alone to a looking glass; eat an apple before it, and some traditions say, you
should comb your hair all the time; the face of your conjugal companion, to be, will be seen in the
glass, as if peeping over your shoulder. I m going to explain to you where this urban legend
originated from and why i believe its story has been altered and changed so many times over the
years. Also how the legend stands in today s world. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And this is because folklorists did not really start recording examples of urban legends until 1970s.
But this Urban legend is based around the idea of piering into a mirror and being able to see or

13) as see[ing] through a glass, darkly. There are mentions of looking glass divination in Chaucer
s Squire s Tale (c. 1390), Spenser s The Faerie Queen (1590), and Shakespeare s Macbeth

Geography of Japan Essay
Japan is known for its contemporary culture and advancement in electronics and engineering. We

What are Branch Davidians
The Branch Davidians also known as The Branch are a religious group that formed from a schism
in the Davidian Seventh day Adventists originating in the 1950s. The Branch is most widely
known for the siege of its Mount Carmel Center compound near Waco, Texas in 1993. Since the
siege there has been mass speculation on the final outcome of the conflict and the actions of
Federal Agencies responding to the incident to include the ATF, FBI, and Texas National Guard.
The siege lasted fifty one days and resulted in the death of the Branch Davidians leader, David
Koresh, along with eighty two Branch Davidian men, women, and children. Four ATF agents were
also killed during the siege in exchanges of gun fire with Branch Davidian members. This paper
examines just who the Branch Davidians are and their beliefs, Agencies that reported to the siege
and their side of the story with what happened at Waco, and finally the outcome and factors leading
up to the end of the siege. I will also try and shed light on how the federal agencies may have gone
about the situation differently in hind sight along with any policy changes that the event may have
brought about.
The Shepherd s Rod Seventh day Adventists The Branch Davidians group comes from complicated
beginnings. The group came into existence as an off shoot of the Seventh day Adventist church
after a Bulgarian immigrant by the name of Victor Houteff in 1930 was banned from the Los
Angeles Seventh day Adventist church.

Gender Expectations Essay
Before we are born and actually take that first breath of air into the world, Society and our family
prepares us to play our role as a male child or female child, leading into adult hood. When the
parents are told by the doctors whether or not it is a boy or girl; we as a society plan for our
showers, to coordinate with the sex of the baby. If it is a femalechild, the decorations for the
shower are mainly pink, and if the sex of the child is a male child, the decorations are of course
mainly blue. Female children are given dolls, tea sets, and pretend kitchens. Little girls are trained
to nurture, take care, and be beautiful. Little boys usually receive sports equipment, toy cars, and
Incredible Hulks. They are trained to be strong, and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Is it because the child is a male child, one may assume that football is definitely something the
little boy should be interested in? When we start grade school there are many different groups
that are available for us to become a part of. There is rarely a football, baseball, or basketball
team available for a little girl to join at such a young age. It is automatically assumed that because
of the roles we are expected to play, that only the little boys would be interested in these types of
sports. At such a young age, we have experienced gender inequality in sports. Little girls are then
forced to join cheerleader teams. Early on, little girls are trained to stay in the background, and
cheer on the men. They are forced to sit in the bleachers, stand on the sidelines, and be that
nurturing, supportive woman that they will soon enough be in their adulthood. The litte girls are
put in their cute little cheerleading costumes, getting all dressed up to play their leading roles.
While cheerleading is considered to be a sport, since it is mainly a woman s sport it is not showed
the respect it should. There are boys that may join the cheerleading sport as well. When this
happens society automatically stereotypes and may consider that boy to be homosexual. Society
needs to accept the different sports that both men and women can compete in, not letting gender
become the main factor. Women should be able to participate

The Octopus
At the turn of the century, American readers were interested only in stories with happy endings,
where goodness was praised and evil was punished. They did not particularly care if that was a
false interpretation of the way life really was. When men such as Frank Norris, the author of The
Octopus, wrote angrily of the injustices and povertyto be found in America, readers turned away.
The Octopus made them change their minds. The course of the novel and the reality of its
characters held the readers attention. It is so powerful a book that people had to care about the
wheat growers, almost against their wishes.
The impact did not end in the early twentieth century, but continues its legacy into the new
millenium. The Octopus, depicts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their solution to the crisis was to keep magnifying it, until it ruined the farmers. Once the railroad
raised the price for the land, the farmers could not afford to buy. They proceeded to create dummy
buyers, fictitious settlers who they created to come in and buy the land. Soon after Delany, a ranch
worker was fired, the railroad used him to act as a dummy buyer and buy the land.
There was no way Delany could actually afforded to buy the land on his own; he was obviously
acting as the railroad s pawn, sent to aggravate the ranchers who leased farms from the railroad.
The railroad also tampered with other types of characters in the story. Dyke was fired from his
job at the railroad after he refused to work for the rates of a man doing half the work he was
doing. Then after Dyke mortgaged his land to the railroad, they raised the rates on the crop he was
producing. They drove him to poverty and when he tried to take back what they had stolen from
him by robbing money from one of their trains, they had him thrown in jail for life.
This is another example of how Norris evinces the railroads unethical treatment of the common
man in California at the time.Shelgrim, the executive of the P. and S.W. tried to justify the
railroad s actions, and in a way, pass on the responsibility, by calling the railroad a force, something
that he had no control over. In the novel, he compared this force to the way that wheat was

Segregation and the Civil Rights Movement Essay
Protest against injustice is deeply rooted in the African American experience. The origins of the
civil rights movement date much further back than the 1954 Supreme Court ruling on Brown v.
Board of Education of Topeka which said, separate but equal schools violated the Constitution.
From the earliest slave revolts in this country over 400 years ago, African Americans strove to
gain full participation in every aspect of political, economic and social life in the United States.
Segregation was an attempt by white Southerners to separate the races in every sphere of life and
to achieve supremacy over blacks. Segregation was often called the Jim Crow system, after a

One of the cases against segregated rail travel was Plessy v. Ferguson (1896), in which the
Supreme Court of the United States ruled that separate but equal accommodations were
constitutional. However, in 1952, the Supreme Court heard a number of school segregation
cases, including Brown v. Board of Topeka, Kansas. It decided unanimously in 1954 that
segregation was unconstitutional, overthrowing the 1869 Plessy v. Ferguson ruling that had set
the separate but equal precedent. As desegregation progresses, the membership of the Ku Klux
Klan (KKK) grew. The KKK used violence or threats against anyone who was suspected of
favoring desegregation or black civil rights. Klan terror, including intimidation and murder, was
widespread in the South in the 1950s and 1960s, though Klan activities were not always reported
in the media. One terrorist act that did receive national attention was the murder of Emmit Till, 14
year old black boy slain in Mississippi by whites who believed he had flirted with a white woman.
The trial and acquittal of the men accuse of Till s murder were covered in the national media,
demonstrating the continuing racial bigotry of Southern whites. To protest segregation, blacks
created new national organizations. The National Afro American League was formed in 1890; the
Niagra Movement in 1905; and National Association for the Advancement of Colored People
(NAACP) in 1909. In 1910,

The Content For Elearning Environments
This is a critique of Dose Culture Matter? A qualitative and comparison study on eLearning in
Germany and China . I am attracted to this article because I work in the eLearning industry doing
visual content for eLearning environments. This study is relevant to my career path and is a topic
of interest for me. Although my current work does not transcend the boundaries of Canada, I think
as national boundaries become less significant to information products that making culturally
sensitive eLearning environments will become more prevalent.
Introduction: The introduction is clearly presented and balances well the preamble of eLearning in
Germany and in China, to center on what are the needs of eLearning as an exported product.
Specifically this study s focus is whether culture is a barrier faced by eLearning products made in a
western culture being exported to another culture. As an education product, eLearning faces deep
grooves of ingrained learning methods that have underlying cultural significance. The article sets
out to appraise the cultural variables in technology mediated learning and use a series of interviews
to help determine the barriers. The authors and researchers of the article are Nadine Hammer and
Andres Janson, Research Associates, and Jan Marco Leimeister, Professor at the University of
Kassel, Research Centre for Information System Design, as the authors are all academics, one may
presume they have knowledge and skills to conduct the proposed research.

And he remembered for them his covenant, and repented according to the multitude of his mercies.

The grape producer should consider the new friendship, business relationship, time invested and
advertising dollars spent before he destroys my business reputation so he can make more money.
The least he could do is allow ample time to make other supplier arrangements. He should supply
me with the product for at least six months to give me time to redirect advertising dollars and find
a new supplier. My focused advertising has only helped increase his brand while he threatens to

Analysis Of The Film Sankofa
Sankofa is an Ankan word which means, We must go back and reclaim our past in order to
move forward ( Diop, 2014). The film Sankofa was produced in the year 1993 in Ghana directed
by Haile Gerima. It is based on the Atlantic slave trade. It is the story slavery from the point of
view of Africans. In the film, all characters represent an element of African American culture
(Gerima, 1993). It also shows the traditional racial scale with the whites at the top followed by
Half castes in the middle and blacks at the bottom.
The film is the story of Mona, who is an African American woman who is brought back to Africa
and finds herself as a slave on the Lafayette sugarcane plantation (Gerima, 1993). In a previous life,
she was born on the sugar farm and named Shola. She was caught and sold and transported as a
slave in North America. This brings the interplay between the African American identity on one
side and the other African identity. The film achieves this through reconstructing the past and
history and also through the conception of blackness and race.
By looking keenly at the main characters in the movie, one can see the mixed racial architecture
that prevailed and that still exists to some extent in the American society. The first character in the
film, Shango, is a maroon slave who was brought to the Lafayette sugar plantation from West
Indies. He is key figure among the slaves in the plantation and also the leader of the rebellion.
Shola, the narrator, is not only

Bill Of Rights Definition
The Bill of Rights was written by James Madison and was ratified in December 15, 1791. The
Bill of Rights was created because the colonies didn t want a constitution without a Bill of Rights
because they were afraid that the government would become too powerful and they would not
have rights. In June 8, 1789, James Madison proposed the Bill of Rights to the House of
Representatives and they approved 17 amendments, and in September 25, 1789 congressed
approved ratification for 12 amendments. After congress ratified the amendments they sent it to the
colonies so they could ratify the bill as well. Finally on December 15, 1791 the colonies ratified

may exist besides the ones mentioned, and even though they are not listed, it does not mean they

expanding their power. The last amendment in the Bill of Rights is the Tenth Amendment. This

Personal Identity by Derek Parfit
In his 1971 paper Personal Identity , Derek Parfit posits that it is possible and indeed desirable to
free important questions from presuppositions about personal identity without losing all that
matters. In working out how to do so, Parfit comes to the conclusion that the question about
identity has no importance (Parfit, 1971, p. 4.2:3). In this essay, I will attempt to show that Parfit
s thesis is a valid one, with positive implications for human behaviour. The first section of the
essay will examine the thesis in further detail and the second will assess how Parfit s claims fare
in the face of criticism.

4.2:7), we should abandon the language of identity. Therefore, for cases in which we are unable to
speak of identity (because the psychological continuity relation is not one one), psychological
continuity will be just as important as identity.
The problem with psychological continuity, however, is that many of the relations involved
(including memory relations) appear to presuppose identity. Parfit attempts to avoid this charge of
circularity by using the concept of q memory. Q memories do not presume that the person having
the q memory and the person who actually had the experience are the same person, unlike ordinary
memories which do presuppose identity. Parfit applies this same redesription to other relations of
psychological continuity such as intention and responsibility.
Parfit returns to the idea of the importance of the psychological continuity relation in survival to
introduce an even more important relation psychological connectedness . Psychological
connectedness is a kind of direct psychological continuity. It is not transitive as it requires the
holding of direct psychological relations (Parfit, 1971, p. 4.2:13). This contrasts with psychological
continuity which is transitive because it only requires overlapping chains of direct psychological
relations (Parfit, 1971, p.4.2:13). The relation of psychological connectedness is more important for
Parfit than that of psychological continuity A person should

can risky that they could be given the right to vote at that age because they might not think about
their impulsive decisions or the consequences of their decisions when it comes to politics

What are the clichГ© characters? ClichГ© characters are characters that are known to be overused
time and time again. This character is pretty predictable and one can usually assert what will
happen to them during the film. An example of a clichГ© character would be Harry Potter. With
Harry, one could argue that his clichГ© characteristics are being an orphan and having to face
Lord Voldemort to save the world. However, Fast and Furious showcased how not to have clichГ©
characters. This could be argued with Paul Walkeras Brian O Connor. Brian went from being an
undercover cop to an undercover agent, then he became known as a criminal and well known
brother of Dominic Toretto. Normally, when this happens, not many actors could pull this off
and still be loved on and off screen. Brian did come a long way, but he ended up becoming the
heart of the entire franchise. This showed that a character can contain multiple identities, but
still maintain an interest of the audience. After this was done with Brian O Connor, it drew
many people towards Paul Walker for what he was able to do. It is not easy playing different
roles and keeping the initial view of that initial character; however, Paul Walker did the
impossible and Brian O Connor remained a key character in the franchise. He even earned a
special dedication in the end of Furious 7, after Paul s sudden death. There are not many

Contact with life itself beyond just our universe. The most famous quote that Sagan tells the story
of this movie is that there is billions and billions of stars up there . The fascinating science fiction
film/thriller of that century, Contact, combines many concepts that do not usually go together or
are thought about in relation to each other. That being the concept of faith, politics, and most
importantly science. This movie was released on July 11th, 1997 by producers Robert Zemeciks
and Steve Starkey. Dr.Ellie Arroway played by Jodie Foster rushes to translate a message that they
think could be coming from the Vegastar system. When contact at first happens, Dr.Ellie Arroway
communicates with the constricting National Security Advisor Kitz who is played by James
Woods. After this unravels, they go in to see the possible problems with occurrence of this
event. An out breaking message is discovered in the signal, but the question is will Arroway be
the only one to be able to solve it or will there be more involved to help including theory s and
arguments? Science versus religion is one of the main topics and many topics of this movie which
I can agree on as I watched this thriller. Ellie doesn t believe in god and doesn t have a set religion
and Palmer does so they clash personalities a lot throughout Contact. I took interest in one character

With the budgeting tool, the corporate can thus make informed financial decisions.
For AT T, Inc., the capital budgetis vital in putting to use the available resources. The act of
prioritizing mainly ensures that critical segments of the company are first to be factored in the
budgeting process and that they are adequately funded at all times (Wyatt, 2013). In that process, it
is easy for the company to identify deficits and adequately plan for loans or stock financing.
Since a budget is a component of sound and responsible financial management, tracking its
formulation and implementation can go a long way to ensuring its objectives are adequately met.
Sound budget management strategies include keeping a proper record of all the expenses v.
allocations. Also, consistently review the implementation to be sure of the anticipated outcome.
Considering the implementation can also help isolate the possibility of adjustments in line with the
budget objectives (Wyatt, 2013).
Effective Budgeting and the Positive Financial Outcome
The fundamental importance of proper budgeting strategies goes beyond corporate investment
decision making. It includes positive financial outcomes in as far as the financial goals are
concerned. One of the positive outcomes is eliminating a fiscal crisis. Financial forecasting

Football Game Essay
Today is May 3, 2016, the day we take on the best team in our conference. The coach announced
yesterday that I, Tyler Bush would be on the mound against the 12 0 Red Raiders. The feeling I
have cannot even be explained in words. To think not one team has been within five points of
defeating them is hard to believe. I don t know whether to be excited because coach would put
the ball in my hands against the Red Raiders or nervous because I do not want to be embarrassed
when we lose 20 0. Now I have to sit and wait through six and a half hours of people saying I do not

Our batters our having no luck against the darts that their pitcher is throwing. As we have not
received a hit in the first five innings. The game was still tied 0 0, as I once again headed back out
to the mound at the bottom of the fifth inning to take on the heart of the lineup. The previous four
innings went smoothly with the opponent only getting four hits. My confidence level was high,
three more innings and we will be walking out of here with a win. But, going through the four,
five, six batters will be a major obstacle. As the game proceeds, I am getting more and more
nervous every pitch.
As I released my go to pitch, I thought it would blow right by the hitter. But I thought wrong.
The 6 3, 200 pounder cranked the ball down the right field line for a stand up triple. My hope in
the matter of a split second went down the drain. With my confidence level at its all time low, all
I wanted to do was take a seat. I knew that was not an option. But the road is not getting easier, as
the 6 3, 200 pounders brother approached the plate. I knew I had to strike him out in order to have
any chance at winning this game. My second pitch of the inning, gone, out of the park. I just
ruined an amazing performance by our entire team in the matter of 2 pitches. I felt as if my team
lost all hope. From that point on, the game was over.

The solution to this problem, the VLA and its mobile sticker propaganda, is to educate parents with
infants and children on the safety of childhood vaccines. By creating a non profit organization that
educates, promotes, fundraises and campaigns vaccines as safe and effective is the best solution to
end the anti vaccinewar. Using data and statistics collected from case studies on vaccine
preventable disease outbreaks, parents can then make an informed decision on vaccinating their
child. This non profit campaign will effectively work if presented in the right setting. An
appropriate approach would be recruiting volunteers to campaign outside of places that parents and

Significant Economic Changes In The United States
In the past 10 years, there have been numerous economic changes in the united states. Between
inflation, unemployment, the GDP and changes in government leadership, how money is spent and
saved regularly changed throughout the decade. These economic habits can be different based on
age, race, gender, location, education levels, and spending habits reflect each of these variables.
Today i will explore these variables, how things have recently changed based on then, and how i
believe things will change in the near future.
There isn t a pattern in the last 10 years for inflation changing. Inflation currently for October is
2.0, in October of last year it was 1.6 so it raised quite a bit in the last year. But in October 2007
inflation was 3.5, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

January 2017 it was at 62.9 so it dropped a little since 2010. I think that it s just going to get
lower and lower in the future because that s the progress it has been in the last 10 years.
GDP now is in the US is 3.3%, GDP has lowered in the last 10 years. In 2007 the GDP in the US

I am going to tell you how Hawaii is doing economically. Hawaii s inflation rate has doubled to
2% in 2016. For unemployment in Hawaii, its relatively low. Since the recession in 2009 Hawaii
has been 2 to 3% lower than the national rate. In 2011 70% men 16 years or older were in the
labor force and 60% of women 16 years or older were in the labor force. The GDP in hawaii in
2016 was $84.7 billion and ranked 38th in the united states. In 2006 the GDP in Hawaii was
$62.1 billion and still was ranked 38th in the united states. I think that the GDP in Hawaii is going
to get higher because it has gotten higher in the last ten years and It should continue to get higher.

The quotation above portrays beer as a drink that is considered by egyptians and mesopotamians
as a holy drink that should be given to every civilian who knows about its existence. This passage

Beer was one of the first drinks that was made in such a way that it was always safe to drink and

To What Extent Is Futabatei s Ukigumo, Japan s First...
During the Meiji period, Japan was faced with a plethora of issues regarding its future. One of
these issues was the future of Japanese literature. At that time, novels were still regarded as a
third rate art form in Japan, though foreign books were highly sought after by the Japanese
public. There were many ways to write Japanese, each system with its own use for specific
occasions. And yet, the idea of writing in the style of natural conversational Japanese was
considered radical and inappropriate for literature by the general public. Most foreign novels were
translated poorly, into a writing style known as kanbun chГґ which was mostly based around
Chinese loan words. As a result, this style had a very rigid and legal feel, due to Chinese... Show

Japan already had a very strong literary history prior to the Meiji restoration, however, if the
Japanese people were to take this heritage into the modern era then they would have to adapt to this
new style of writing fiction.
While studying Russian at TГґkyГґ gaikoku go gakkГґ, a student named Futabatei Shimei realised
the inefficiency of the kanbun chГґ and gabuntai styles when translating Russian novels into
Japanese. And through logical continuation, he understood that writing a Japanese novel for the
modern era would mean having to drop these traditional writing styles as well. In January 1886,
Futabatei met with Tsubouchi ShГґyГґ. ShГґyГґ s criticism, ShЕЌsetsu Shinzui had struck a chord
with Futabatei, who had envisioned many of the same ideas while reading Russian literature.
Tsubouchi had himself published a novel known as TЕЌsei Shosei Kishitsu, which he had hoped
would achieve his goals in becoming the book to bring Japanese literature into the modern era.
Unfortunately, he failed to avoid the same exaggerated and coincidental plot developments which
he himself criticised. Furthermore, the characterisation displayed in the novel was described as,
weak and shows little psychological penetration 4 . Resigned to the realisation that his talent lay in
critique and translation, he decided to focus his attention on tutoring other writers to achieve what
he had tried to do. With Tsubouchi s guidance, and

Outline Of Major Depressive Disorder
Paige Rew
Diagnostic Handbook
Salisbury University
The disorder I will be focusing on is Major Depressive Disorder. Major Depressive Disorder, also
known as major depression, has been a continuing health problem for human beings throughout the
course of history. According to documents written by philosophers, healers and other writers,
depression has had a deep rooted existence dating as far back as the second millennium B.C. At
this time, Major Depressive Disorder was referred to as melancholia. The earliest documentation of
melancholia appeared in the ancient texts of the Mesopotamian population. It was then believed
that all mental illness was a result of demonic possession and could only be healed by the power of
a priest. It was not until much later that the first historical understanding of depression as a spiritual
or mental illness was recorded. According to historical documentation, populations such as the
ancient Greeks, Romans, Chinese and Egyptian civilizations had controversial thinking about the
causes of melancholia, or depression. The Chinese and Egyptian cultures believed that their
mentally ill were possessed by demons and practiced exorcism techniques such as beatings, restraint
and starvation. Unlike the Chinese and Egyptians, the Romans and Greeks contributed mental
illness and depression to biological and psychological disease. Treatment techniques such as
gymnastics, massage, special diets, music, baths and herbal

example of this similarity in Night is when the author states that We breathed in air filled with fire

which helps create emotion that the reader feels about the character. An example of this in the short

Dorian Gray Closet
Oscar Wilde s The Picture of Dorian Gray has several major preoccupations which are integral in
understanding the depths in which it goes in formulating its central message. The novel presents
itself almost as an essay, with a preface concluding with the statement All art is quite useless
(Wilde 4). From this preface, to its conclusion, it deals with the role of art as catharsis for the
artist; however, not only as a release of emotion, but also as a closet for the artist s innermost
desires. The novel literally expresses this through its first lines, The artist is the creator of
beautiful things / to reveal art and conceal the artist is art s aim (Wilde 3). Thus, art acts as a
vehicle to conceal that which the person truly yearns and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The narrative of the novel displays the fallibility of art as a closet by means of this portrait.
When the artist imbues their sins and virtues into the very foundation of their work, they
become visible for all audiences. Dorian may not paint the portrait, but he shares a similar
relationship with it; it is him it reflects. The portrait mirrors Dorian and paints his longings on a
canvas for all to see: the face on the canvas bear the burden of his passions and his sins; that the
painted image might be seared with the lines of suffering and thought, and that he might keep
all the delicate bloom [...] Eternal youth, infinite passion, passions subtle and secret, wild joys
and wilder sins he was to have all these things. The portrait was to bear the burden of his shame
(Wilde 77, 88). The portrait embodies Dorian, everything he does, everything he wants, and
everything he feels, the portrait projects. This further perpetuates the closet analogy; however, it
also circumvents the metaphor itself, art does not conceal, it reveals. When Basil Hallward
perceives the fruit of his labor after Dorian infuses it with himself, his response shows the
portrait s failure to conceal: There was something in its expression that filled him with disgust
and loathing [...] it was from within, apparently, that the foulness and horror had come. Through
some strange quickening of inner life the leprosies of sin were slowly eating the thing away
(Wilde 130 2). Art in this scenario fails as a closet and lays bare the sins of Dorian Gray, it is
unable to hide that which he desires. Wilde states that Those who go beneath the surface do so at
their peril. / Those who read the symbol do so at their peril (Wilde 3) but here, there is no beneath.
The hidden intentions the work professes are visible from a brief

All boxers obviously believe that the benefits of the ancient sport outweigh its negative side. This
is shown in their enthusiasm to take potentially high risks in order to gain the rewards of winning.
Like all sports, there is an element of danger involved however we have the freedom to decide
whether or not to take part in it.
One of the main arguments for boxing being banned is that serious medical injury can result
from boxing due to continuous blows to the head. In boxing when the head is knocked
sideways, the brain swirls in the skull, its layers shearing and sliding off one another, tearing
vital nerve fibres . Statistics show that 15 20% of boxers ending a professional career develop
the punch drunk syndrome . This syndrome consists of the brain weakening, loss of memory,
slowed speech and difficulty in walking. Also boxing can effect the time of death. A
professional boxer dies around 10 15 years earlier than the average life expectancy. People argue
that a sport, which can result in players suffering from brain damage and cerebral ischemia ( a
disruption of blood supply to an area of the brain ) should be banned straight away because of the
life threatening risks involved

The Negative Effects Of Special Education In Schools
In the last 15 years, arts education programs have been under constant threat. Some blame this on
the No Child Left Behind law, passed in 2001, that placed focus on core subjects such as math or
language. Others point to the steady education budget cuts by each state. Whatever the cause,
cutting arts educationclasses affects every student but special educationstudents are the ones most
impacted. While it is well known that cutting these programs can have negative effects; some of
which are lower test scores, lower attendance rates, and higher disciplinary rates. What is less
known is the many ways the artsplay an important role in special education. Weather its intergrated
as part of classroom curriculum or taught separately it builds confidence, helps integrate them with
typically developing peers, enhances communication, and builds problem solving skills. All of this
in an environment that is the only place (in school) where uniqueness and individuality are
celebrated (Andrus 10).
The No Child Left Behind Act was intended to create equitable educational opportunities for all
students, and close achievement gaps among different groups of students (Spohn 3). Under this act,
schools would receive federal funding if their students tested proficient in math and reading. Their
test scores must also show adequate yearly progress. With such importance being placed on the

Candover Clinic Essay
Introduction The Candover clinic is a private patient facility that consists of a private Outpatient
building and its own suite created especially for private patients. The facility is based alongside
Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust a National Health Service (NHS) hospital, which covers a
population of approximately 600.000 and covers Hampshire and parts of West Berkshire (Trust
Source). Before becoming Hampshire Hospitals, it used to be known as Basingstoke and North
Hampshire Hospital Foundation Trust, which it earned in 2006, however, as a result of an
integration in 2012 between the North Hampshire Foundation Trust and Winchester and Eastliegh
Healthcare Trust it became Hampshire Hospitals. (Trust Source) The Candover Clinic opened...

Although this does come at a cost this can either be made by the patient themselves, or through
their health insurance cover. There are opportunities for people who go through the NHS to have a
room on their own, but they don t always contain the same environment or facilities. As The
Candover Clinic is a new facility it needs to overcome inter trust relationships, as when it first
opened it appeared to have the attitude that it was a separate unit from the hospital trust and in turn
this created a very negative attitude within the trust. Slowly the Clinic is building an understanding
within the staff to create a better working environment and ensure they are working for the same
goal, which is to increase revenue for the trust and its future. Technological impacts within the
Clinic are it is an innovation for the trust and has to show that it is beneficial and that it is creating
revenue for the trust rather than causing a deficit. So in effect it has a lot to prove. It is using the

Hispanic Culture Rejection Essay
Why does Hispanic Culture reject people like Oscar and how does this affect them? It is very
hard to be criticized instead of being supported and Junto Diaz was rejected and censured by his
family and at school by some of his classmates for not being the typical Dominican alpha male .
In addition, it is common thing today to witness the cases of rejection by the society you are
living in. A fine example of a safe target of rejection and its affect is Oscar, the main character of
the Junto Diaz s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao . However, do we know the main
causes of which a person is rejected by society and the consequences that this rejection brings
with it? Many of you will agree with me that racial or cultural bias, being introvert, appearance,
and level of education, economy, and different social classes are the most common reason why
people reject others. Also, rejection brings with it many negative consequences such as
damaging impact on mental and physical health, produces surges of anger and aggression,
destroys our self esteem and temporarily lowers our IQ. According to Rosemary Sword in the
article Shunning The Ultimate Rejection , the main reasons why people are rejected are racial
or cultural bias, being introvert, appearance, level of education and economy and different
social classes (Sord, Rosemary, and Philip Zimbardo). First, many times we get carried away by
a generalized idea of a certain culture. For example, how many videos we have seen in the
social media where Muslim people are rejected. It is an example of Islamophobia the reason of
which is that people are victims of fear for all recent terrorist attacks. We judge equally all those
belonging to that culture without realizing that many of them have been victims of a regime of
oppression, poverty and death, and they only want freedom and peace. In addition to that Oscar,
the main character of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao , also suffers from the rejected
caused by these factors. Being a Dominican he does not fit into any cultural or racial group.
Because of his skin color he was not accepted by the white kids and the kids of color, upon
hearing him speak and seeing him move his body, shook their heads. You re not

Balzac And The Chinese Little Seamstress Analysis
In Balzac and The Chinese Little Seamstress, a historical fiction by Dai Sijie, the Little
Seamstress is transformed as Luo and the narrator tell the stories of the French books. Before
she leaves, the Little Seamstress first alters the Mao jacket for herself and asks her father to buy
a pair of white tennis shoes in Yong Jing. At the end, she even changes her hairstyle to be like a
city girl. She says, a woman s beauty is a treasure beyond price. (178) . By this statement, she
means that people can be judged by their physical appearances. I totally disagree with the Little
Seamstress statement. People should never be judged by their looks. My idea mainly comes from
my experiences and what I see in media. You know what, nobody is perfect in this world, and
beauty is abstract. Beauty standards differ across cultures and from time to time, so... Show more

Many people usually say we need to care about personality more than the looks, and they end up
loving pop stars and actors. People can t be more wrong! Don t fall in the trap of companies!
The companies shape the idea of typical beauty to make money out of it. One Direction, a
British band, is a good example. All the members of One Direction are good looking, so that
many teenagers spend money on their concerts and goods. And that s exactly what the
companies want making money. But I wanna tell you something. We are more than our looks!
Okay, let s think about Susan Boyle. We all know who she is. When she introduces herself in
Britains Got Talent [2], a Britain TV show, the judges and the audience disdain her only by her
looks. But she doesn t care what people think about her. When she starts to sing the song, the
judges reactions are full of respect. And now, she is one of the most famous singers in the world.

Research Paper On Electric Cars
Are Electric Cars the Answer to Climate Change?
The market for electric cars has exploded over the last couple of years. The idea that owning an
electric car will reduce pollutants and help with climate change is a popular opinion. However,
research shows that electric cars actually contribute similar levels of pollutants to the environment
as their counterpart: internal combustion engines. Electric cars have been painted from the very
beginning as zero emission vehicles. Should a vehicle be advertised as a zero emissions vehicle
when the power that it charges from is far from zero?
An environmentalist named Robert F. Kennedy wrote an article in 2009 for the Financial Times in
which he said that the United States must end its dependence on deadly, destructive coal (Bryce

Nuclear can produce 56 watts per square meter while wind only produces 1.2 watts per square
meter. Wind requires 45 times the land to produce the same amount of power. Not only does
nuclear require very little land to produce a lot of power, but the amount of waste it produces is
next to none. In one year, the U.S. coal industry produces nearly 2,200 times as much solid waste
as the U.S. nuclear industry has produced in more than four decades (Bryce 261).
Emissions coming out of an internal combustion engine are produced at the car and that is where
people inhale them. Fuel burning internal combustion engines that power conventional vehicles
emit carbon dioxide and fine particulate matter including acids, organic chemicals as well as dust
and soil; this pollution has been linked to respiratory and heart problems and cancer (Park). With
an electric car those same emissions are being released at a power plant while the car is being

Habitus By Bourdieu
The article Bourdieu and Habitus was not easy to read, but I found it enlightening as it helped to
reinforce my understanding of Bourdieu s concept of habitus by comparing and relating different
roles and norms of society. The term habitus derives from the Latin verb hebre meaning to have or
to hold (Swartz, 2002, p. 615), the concept grows out of Bourdieu s attempt to address the question,
how the human action follow regular pattern without being the product to some external structure,
such as cultural norms? The concept of habitus invites one to think of human practices as regulated
by transposable dispositions rather than cultural norms or by conscious attentions. The term
dispositions is key for Bourdieu, for it suggests a way of thinking about habit that is clearly
different and more active from the more popular idea of absolute repetition or routine.... Show more

There is more to human action than dispositions formed in the past. Hence, Bourdieu employs two

Death By Neil Degrasse Tyson Analysis
By reading the book Death by Black Hole: And Other Cosmic Quandaries, one can deduce that
the author, Neil deGrasse Tyson, is man of intelligence with a love for the ways of the universe.
He clearly has a passion for what he does, as he immerses himself in his personal interests by
giving public lectures about the cosmos (346). He values his personal interest so much that he
has solved how long it would take to cook a 16 inch pepperoni pizza on Venus; the answer is
seven seconds (80). Tyson obviously has a strong enthusiasm for what he does as an astrophysicist
and has spent many years in this field. Throughout the book, he explains concepts in ways that the
reader is able to understand and relate to. He uses simple topics to help explain our complex
universe. For example, he introduces the idea of a constant and uses... Show more content on

The reader learns more about Tyson through the chapter Holy Wars, in which he explains his
beliefs on God and religion. While the author does not indicate that he is an atheist, the reader is
drawn to the conclusion that he does not believe in God. He states that if the Bible had ever been
shown to be a rich source of scientific answers and understanding, [scientists] would be mining it
daily for cosmic discovery (352). This statement evidently states that the Bible holds no valuable
information with regards to the universal laws and ideas. On the last page of the book, Tyson
further emphasizes that one cannot put complete faith in a higher being by stating that [God] does
not want students who could make the next major breakthrough in renewable energy sources or
space travel to have been taught that anything they do not understand, and that nobody yet
understands, is divinely constructed and therefore beyond intellectual capability

ways, the healthcare service providers have been considering to implement the technology in their
institutions since the system has been commercially available in the market place since 2006 (Ford,
McAlenrney, Phillips, Menachemi, and Rudolph, 2008). Although a good number of institutions
have been analyzing the possibility of adopting the system, until recently, it was estimated that only
5% of U.S. hospitals had the system in operation (American Hospital Association Archive). Another
study, a 2003 report from First Consulting Group for the American Hospital Association and the
Federation of American Hospitals, says that an estimated 5% of American hospitals used CPOE in
2002. Moreover, a report found that the amount of U.S. hospitals with completely available CPOE
system was estimated only 9.6% in 2002 [Ash et al, 2004]. Another report from the Leapfrog Group
titled Healthcare Benchmarks and Quality Improvement has estimated that about 10% of all U.S.
hospitals would have completed CPOE implementationby the end of 2006 [Ash et al, 2004]. Add a
transition clause here, according to the Leapfrog Group CPOE evaluation tool, it was reported that
a mere 8% U.S. hospitals were using the system (Anderson, 2009) 120. Not only the

Persuasive Essay On Refugees
The issue of refugees heated up when President Donald Trump became president. He is totally
against of letting refugees into the United States. As most people who aren t refugees don t
really care what he does, but people who are refugees would have a different story. The UN has
never really had any issues towards refugees until Donald Trump had became president. The
growth of refugees has increased because of war, being discarded from the country, or not
following the right religion. Historically we have let many refugees come into our country in the
past. According to The Washington Post, global displacement levels declined to a historic low in
2005 but started escalating again because of a series of conflicts, including the U.S. invasion of
Iraq. By mid 2015, the total number of refugees and internally displaced people had climbed to an
all time high of more than 60 million people, the UNHCR estimates reflecting both the masses of
people newly uprooted from war torn regions of Syria and South Sudan, as well as those displaced
years ago from places like Pakistan and Afghanistan who still haven t been able to return home. So
throughout the history, many refugees have been fleeing their countries but letting refugees into
the United States, it could cause a lot of problems like it would cost the UN more money, there are
billions of refugees why not help them all, and there could be terrorist in the group. What this
evidence suggests is that this is a very significant

The World Labor Market
The stabilization of the labor supply created the world market labor (Lecture, February 25, 2014).
For example, this resulted in millions of people to come to America and involve themselves in
working for our country. However, migrants tend to always get paid little amounts which does not
really help them out the way that they need or hope for but they stick around anyways.
In addition, increased migration primarily helps the government s economic state. For instance, the
United States has a large labor market. There are numerous tasks that need to be competed on a
daily basis. By hiring migrants they are able to pay them extremely little compared to the profits
that are being made. Which means the government s economy is highly dependent on global
workers (Robinson,267). This is why emigrants can be seen as heroes. And they should be treated
with decency because dependent countries such as the US cannot afford to lose them
(Robinson,267).
In the article by Alejandro Portes, he explains that capital being global and labor being local is
nothing new. That the modern world system has grown because of the abroad labor system
occurring. (Portes,152). He also mentions that the process of transnational communities in the
world system resulted in many advantages. However, he says those advantages are entirely on the
side of those able to...thus turning globalization into the final apotheosis of capital... (Portes, 152).

The Idea Of Eliminating Waste, Also Known As Muda, From
The idea of eliminating waste, also known as muda, from various processes has been sought after
and practiced for centuries. Waiting for a product that isn t being processed wastes time, excess
inventory wastes space, and underutilization of employees wastes creativity. Lean may seem
somewhat new, considering it was only formally identified in the 1990 s, however, there are now
many businesses that put emphasis on the importance of lean. Some companies, such as Boeing,
even have organizations focused on the implementation of lean. During the Boeing tour, it was
evident that the company has put a lot of effort into incorporating lean systems into many of its
internal functions at the Everett plant. In manufacturing, the fuselage automated... Show more

One example would be the color coded vests employees wear. Blue vests represent materials
management, brown is leadership, green is quality, so on and so forth. This makes it much
easier to spot an employee from any function within Boeing, which eliminates wasted time. Our
in class discussion about Boeing s standardization of tool boxes also reappeared during the
Boeing tour. Though it hasn t been fully implemented yet, Boeing has required its employees to
use the tool boxes provided by Boeing every day to standardize work methods. This ensures that
the quality of work and methods used are consistent. Boeing further exhibited its commitment to
the continuous improvement of its systems by forming a team dedicated to the planning and
implementation of lean. Boeing has been recognized as a leader in lean innovations, but there
are still many other companies striving towards leaner processes. According to a recent news
article, GE Healthcare has implemented a very interesting use of new technology in its repair
operations center in Milwaukee. With the use of self driving warehouse vehicles called OTTO ,
GE has been able to reduce the size of its repair stations by 40%, which means a sizeable cut in
inventories. GE uses an entire fleet of OTTOs to deliver parts to workstations that perform
thousands of repairs of medical devices weekly. How does OTTO do this? Parts are delivered on
demand directly from the pick up point to the required destination, always automatically

In the short story Casey At The Bat the author uses humor to tell the story. I think the author does
it to explain the depth and meaning of the story. The author makes it where we expect something

better. I think this because in the beginning of the story all the people were excited because
Casey was coming up to bat like they were screaming his name and everything. So that makes the

A Short Story Of A Ghost Story
I shall begin my story with an experience I encountered at the age of sixteen at our small town s
Latin school. The sweetness of many memories from that time still stirs and touches me with
melancholy: dark and well lit alleys, houses and factories, faces and chimes, rooms affluent and
comfortable, snug and amenable, the whole town was pregnant with secrets.
The realms of day and night, two different universes coming from two opposite poles, mingled
during this time. My parents home belonged to one realm. This realm was familiar to me in many
ways strictness and love, model behaviour and school. This realm was thriving in clarity, brilliance
and purity, polite conversations and good manners. This was the world in which morning hymns
were sung and Christmas celebrated. Straight lines and paths led into the future: there was duty,
love, forgiveness, good resolutions, wisdom and reverence. If one wanted an unsullied and
ordinary life, one made sure one was in league with this world.
The other realm, however, was completely different: it smelt different, spoke a different language,
promised and demanded different things. This world contained ghost stories, rumours of scandals
and servant girls. It was dominated by a loud mixture of horrendous, intriguing, frightful, mysterious
things, including slaughterhouses and prisons, drunkards and screeching fishwives, calving cows,
horse sinking to their deaths, talks of robberies, murders and suicides. All these wild and cruel,

invention of this system caused the medical world to scratch their heads in wonder of how great
the system really is. In this research paper I will outline the development, uses, present, and future

Surgeries assisted by robots have comparable or better outcomes than hand done surgeries (5).
The device has fail safe mechanisms, one of these mechanisms is that for the surgeon to be able
to start the surgery, the surgeon s head must be placed in the viewer, if not, the system will remain
locked and motionless (3). The robotic arms are kept from pivoting above or at the one inch entry
incision by a zero point movement system during the procedure (3). Without this mechanism, the
incision could be unintentionally torn (3). The power source for the machine includes a backup
battery that allows the device to run for twenty minutes if the main hospital power source fails (3).
This backup battery provides the hospital enough time to get the power back up and running (3). If
a power outage were to occur, the manufacturers put an eject protocol on the device which is
designed to prevent patient injury by quickly removing instruments and undocking the da Vinci
surgical system within 30 to 60 seconds (8). Any instrument not made by Intuitive Surgical will be
rejected by the machine due to a chip in each instrument (3). Information about each instrument is
tracked by these chips for more precise control and to keep track of instrument usage to determine
when it needs to be replaced (3).
Many patients appreciate less recovery time and less pain post operation (13). Benefits of robotic
assisted surgery include shorter hospital stay,

  • 2. The Rule Of The Franciscan Order The Rule of the Franciscan Order Francis of Assisi is an icon of poverty and reform in the Catholic Church, because his lifestyle encouraged the Church and especially the hierarchy of his time to change almost entirely. He can be perceived as a prophet of his time who revolutionized from his very being a drastic change, because with his life as an example he went from words to actions. Francis was born into a wealthy family in Assisi; he had everything a boy of his time could ask for. Francis experienced some time alone in a prison cell, it was after that time that he begins to feel dissatisfaction with kind of life he was living and began to grow a spiritual maturation. Francis received a revelation about his mission and found that the key to his life was his uncompromising attempt to imitate Christ through absolute poverty, humility and simplicity. Medieval Sourcebook: The Rule of the Franciscan Order is a source found at Fordham University online sourcebooks. The source has as the main focus The Rule of the Franciscan Order . It gives details in regards to the history of the founding of the order and what was the major contribution of St. Francis in establishing the order of the lesser brothers . • 5. What are Branch Davidians The Branch Davidians also known as The Branch are a religious group that formed from a schism in the Davidian Seventh day Adventists originating in the 1950s. The Branch is most widely known for the siege of its Mount Carmel Center compound near Waco, Texas in 1993. Since the siege there has been mass speculation on the final outcome of the conflict and the actions of Federal Agencies responding to the incident to include the ATF, FBI, and Texas National Guard. The siege lasted fifty one days and resulted in the death of the Branch Davidians leader, David Koresh, along with eighty two Branch Davidian men, women, and children. Four ATF agents were also killed during the siege in exchanges of gun fire with Branch Davidian members. This paper examines just who the Branch Davidians are and their beliefs, Agencies that reported to the siege and their side of the story with what happened at Waco, and finally the outcome and factors leading up to the end of the siege. I will also try and shed light on how the federal agencies may have gone about the situation differently in hind sight along with any policy changes that the event may have brought about. The Shepherd s Rod Seventh day Adventists The Branch Davidians group comes from complicated beginnings. The group came into existence as an off shoot of the Seventh day Adventist church after a Bulgarian immigrant by the name of Victor Houteff in 1930 was banned from the Los Angeles Seventh day Adventist church. ... • 6. Gender Expectations Essay Before we are born and actually take that first breath of air into the world, Society and our family prepares us to play our role as a male child or female child, leading into adult hood. When the parents are told by the doctors whether or not it is a boy or girl; we as a society plan for our showers, to coordinate with the sex of the baby. If it is a femalechild, the decorations for the shower are mainly pink, and if the sex of the child is a male child, the decorations are of course mainly blue. Female children are given dolls, tea sets, and pretend kitchens. Little girls are trained to nurture, take care, and be beautiful. Little boys usually receive sports equipment, toy cars, and Incredible Hulks. They are trained to be strong, and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Is it because the child is a male child, one may assume that football is definitely something the little boy should be interested in? When we start grade school there are many different groups that are available for us to become a part of. There is rarely a football, baseball, or basketball team available for a little girl to join at such a young age. It is automatically assumed that because of the roles we are expected to play, that only the little boys would be interested in these types of sports. At such a young age, we have experienced gender inequality in sports. Little girls are then forced to join cheerleader teams. Early on, little girls are trained to stay in the background, and cheer on the men. They are forced to sit in the bleachers, stand on the sidelines, and be that nurturing, supportive woman that they will soon enough be in their adulthood. The litte girls are put in their cute little cheerleading costumes, getting all dressed up to play their leading roles. While cheerleading is considered to be a sport, since it is mainly a woman s sport it is not showed the respect it should. There are boys that may join the cheerleading sport as well. When this happens society automatically stereotypes and may consider that boy to be homosexual. Society needs to accept the different sports that both men and women can compete in, not letting gender become the main factor. Women should be able to participate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Octopus At the turn of the century, American readers were interested only in stories with happy endings, where goodness was praised and evil was punished. They did not particularly care if that was a false interpretation of the way life really was. When men such as Frank Norris, the author of The Octopus, wrote angrily of the injustices and povertyto be found in America, readers turned away. The Octopus made them change their minds. The course of the novel and the reality of its characters held the readers attention. It is so powerful a book that people had to care about the wheat growers, almost against their wishes. The impact did not end in the early twentieth century, but continues its legacy into the new millenium. The Octopus, depicts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Their solution to the crisis was to keep magnifying it, until it ruined the farmers. Once the railroad raised the price for the land, the farmers could not afford to buy. They proceeded to create dummy buyers, fictitious settlers who they created to come in and buy the land. Soon after Delany, a ranch worker was fired, the railroad used him to act as a dummy buyer and buy the land. There was no way Delany could actually afforded to buy the land on his own; he was obviously acting as the railroad s pawn, sent to aggravate the ranchers who leased farms from the railroad. The railroad also tampered with other types of characters in the story. Dyke was fired from his job at the railroad after he refused to work for the rates of a man doing half the work he was doing. Then after Dyke mortgaged his land to the railroad, they raised the rates on the crop he was producing. They drove him to poverty and when he tried to take back what they had stolen from him by robbing money from one of their trains, they had him thrown in jail for life. This is another example of how Norris evinces the railroads unethical treatment of the common man in California at the time.Shelgrim, the executive of the P. and S.W. tried to justify the railroad s actions, and in a way, pass on the responsibility, by calling the railroad a force, something that he had no control over. In the novel, he compared this force to the way that wheat was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Segregation and the Civil Rights Movement Essay Protest against injustice is deeply rooted in the African American experience. The origins of the civil rights movement date much further back than the 1954 Supreme Court ruling on Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka which said, separate but equal schools violated the Constitution. From the earliest slave revolts in this country over 400 years ago, African Americans strove to gain full participation in every aspect of political, economic and social life in the United States. Segregation was an attempt by white Southerners to separate the races in every sphere of life and to achieve supremacy over blacks. Segregation was often called the Jim Crow system, after a minstrel show character from the 1830s that was an old,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the cases against segregated rail travel was Plessy v. Ferguson (1896), in which the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that separate but equal accommodations were constitutional. However, in 1952, the Supreme Court heard a number of school segregation cases, including Brown v. Board of Topeka, Kansas. It decided unanimously in 1954 that segregation was unconstitutional, overthrowing the 1869 Plessy v. Ferguson ruling that had set the separate but equal precedent. As desegregation progresses, the membership of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) grew. The KKK used violence or threats against anyone who was suspected of favoring desegregation or black civil rights. Klan terror, including intimidation and murder, was widespread in the South in the 1950s and 1960s, though Klan activities were not always reported in the media. One terrorist act that did receive national attention was the murder of Emmit Till, 14 year old black boy slain in Mississippi by whites who believed he had flirted with a white woman. The trial and acquittal of the men accuse of Till s murder were covered in the national media, demonstrating the continuing racial bigotry of Southern whites. To protest segregation, blacks created new national organizations. The National Afro American League was formed in 1890; the Niagra Movement in 1905; and National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909. In 1910, ... • 9. The Content For Elearning Environments This is a critique of Dose Culture Matter? A qualitative and comparison study on eLearning in Germany and China . I am attracted to this article because I work in the eLearning industry doing visual content for eLearning environments. This study is relevant to my career path and is a topic of interest for me. Although my current work does not transcend the boundaries of Canada, I think as national boundaries become less significant to information products that making culturally sensitive eLearning environments will become more prevalent. Introduction: The introduction is clearly presented and balances well the preamble of eLearning in Germany and in China, to center on what are the needs of eLearning as an exported product. Specifically this study s focus is whether culture is a barrier faced by eLearning products made in a western culture being exported to another culture. As an education product, eLearning faces deep grooves of ingrained learning methods that have underlying cultural significance. The article sets out to appraise the cultural variables in technology mediated learning and use a series of interviews to help determine the barriers. The authors and researchers of the article are Nadine Hammer and Andres Janson, Research Associates, and Jan Marco Leimeister, Professor at the University of Kassel, Research Centre for Information System Design, as the authors are all academics, one may presume they have knowledge and skills to conduct the proposed research. • 11. Analysis Of The Film Sankofa Sankofa is an Ankan word which means, We must go back and reclaim our past in order to move forward ( Diop, 2014). The film Sankofa was produced in the year 1993 in Ghana directed by Haile Gerima. It is based on the Atlantic slave trade. It is the story slavery from the point of view of Africans. In the film, all characters represent an element of African American culture (Gerima, 1993). It also shows the traditional racial scale with the whites at the top followed by Half castes in the middle and blacks at the bottom. The film is the story of Mona, who is an African American woman who is brought back to Africa and finds herself as a slave on the Lafayette sugarcane plantation (Gerima, 1993). In a previous life, she was born on the sugar farm and named Shola. She was caught and sold and transported as a slave in North America. This brings the interplay between the African American identity on one side and the other African identity. The film achieves this through reconstructing the past and history and also through the conception of blackness and race. By looking keenly at the main characters in the movie, one can see the mixed racial architecture that prevailed and that still exists to some extent in the American society. The first character in the film, Shango, is a maroon slave who was brought to the Lafayette sugar plantation from West Indies. He is key figure among the slaves in the plantation and also the leader of the rebellion. Shola, the narrator, is not only ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Personal Identity by Derek Parfit In his 1971 paper Personal Identity , Derek Parfit posits that it is possible and indeed desirable to free important questions from presuppositions about personal identity without losing all that matters. In working out how to do so, Parfit comes to the conclusion that the question about identity has no importance (Parfit, 1971, p. 4.2:3). In this essay, I will attempt to show that Parfit s thesis is a valid one, with positive implications for human behaviour. The first section of the essay will examine the thesis in further detail and the second will assess how Parfit s claims fare in the face of criticism. I Problems of personal identity generally involve questions about what makes one the person one is and what it takes for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 4.2:7), we should abandon the language of identity. Therefore, for cases in which we are unable to speak of identity (because the psychological continuity relation is not one one), psychological continuity will be just as important as identity. The problem with psychological continuity, however, is that many of the relations involved (including memory relations) appear to presuppose identity. Parfit attempts to avoid this charge of circularity by using the concept of q memory. Q memories do not presume that the person having the q memory and the person who actually had the experience are the same person, unlike ordinary memories which do presuppose identity. Parfit applies this same redesription to other relations of psychological continuity such as intention and responsibility. Parfit returns to the idea of the importance of the psychological continuity relation in survival to introduce an even more important relation psychological connectedness . Psychological connectedness is a kind of direct psychological continuity. It is not transitive as it requires the holding of direct psychological relations (Parfit, 1971, p. 4.2:13). This contrasts with psychological continuity which is transitive because it only requires overlapping chains of direct psychological relations (Parfit, 1971, p.4.2:13). Major Depressive Disorder, also known as major depression, has been a continuing health problem for human beings throughout the course of history. According to documents written by philosophers, healers and other writers, depression has had a deep rooted existence dating as far back as the second millennium B.C. At this time, Major Depressive Disorder was referred to as melancholia. The earliest documentation of melancholia appeared in the ancient texts of the Mesopotamian population. It was then believed that all mental illness was a result of demonic possession and could only be healed by the power of a priest. It was not until much later that the first historical understanding of depression as a spiritual or mental illness was recorded. According to historical documentation, populations such as the ancient Greeks, Romans, Chinese and Egyptian civilizations had controversial thinking about the causes of melancholia, or depression. The Chinese and Egyptian cultures believed that their mentally ill were possessed by demons and practiced exorcism techniques such as beatings, restraint and starvation. Unlike the Chinese and Egyptians, the Romans and Greeks contributed mental illness and depression to biological and psychological disease. Each author s use of imagery and the tones they convey allow the reader to understand how each character gets over their conflicts with optimism. In the novel Night by Elie Wiesel and the short story The Breakaway, by an unknown author the two author s use of imagery is similar because they both show how the characters overcome their conflicts with hope. • 31. Dorian Gray Closet Oscar Wilde s The Picture of Dorian Gray has several major preoccupations which are integral in understanding the depths in which it goes in formulating its central message. The novel presents itself almost as an essay, with a preface concluding with the statement All art is quite useless (Wilde 4). From this preface, to its conclusion, it deals with the role of art as catharsis for the artist; however, not only as a release of emotion, but also as a closet for the artist s innermost desires. The novel literally expresses this through its first lines, The artist is the creator of beautiful things / to reveal art and conceal the artist is art s aim (Wilde 3). Thus, art acts as a vehicle to conceal that which the person truly yearns and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The narrative of the novel displays the fallibility of art as a closet by means of this portrait. When the artist imbues their sins and virtues into the very foundation of their work, they become visible for all audiences. Dorian may not paint the portrait, but he shares a similar relationship with it; it is him it reflects. The portrait mirrors Dorian and paints his longings on a canvas for all to see: the face on the canvas bear the burden of his passions and his sins; that the painted image might be seared with the lines of suffering and thought, and that he might keep all the delicate bloom [...] Eternal youth, infinite passion, passions subtle and secret, wild joys and wilder sins he was to have all these things. The portrait was to bear the burden of his shame (Wilde 77, 88). The portrait embodies Dorian, everything he does, everything he wants, and everything he feels, the portrait projects. This further perpetuates the closet analogy; however, it also circumvents the metaphor itself, art does not conceal, it reveals. When Basil Hallward perceives the fruit of his labor after Dorian infuses it with himself, his response shows the portrait s failure to conceal: There was something in its expression that filled him with disgust and loathing [...] it was from within, apparently, that the foulness and horror had come. Through some strange quickening of inner life the leprosies of sin were slowly eating the thing away (Wilde 130 2). Art in this scenario fails as a closet and lays bare the sins of Dorian Gray, it is unable to hide that which he desires. Wilde states that Those who go beneath the surface do so at their peril. / Those who read the symbol do so at their peril (Wilde 3) but here, there is no beneath. One of the main arguments for boxing being banned is that serious medical injury can result from boxing due to continuous blows to the head. It is very hard to be criticized instead of being supported and Junto Diaz was rejected and censured by his family and at school by some of his classmates for not being the typical Dominican alpha male . In addition, it is common thing today to witness the cases of rejection by the society you are living in. A fine example of a safe target of rejection and its affect is Oscar, the main character of the Junto Diaz s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao . However, do we know the main causes of which a person is rejected by society and the consequences that this rejection brings with it? Many of you will agree with me that racial or cultural bias, being introvert, appearance, and level of education, economy, and different social classes are the most common reason why people reject others. Also, rejection brings with it many negative consequences such as damaging impact on mental and physical health, produces surges of anger and aggression, destroys our self esteem and temporarily lowers our IQ. According to Rosemary Sword in the article Shunning The Ultimate Rejection , the main reasons why people are rejected are racial or cultural bias, being introvert, appearance, level of education and economy and different social classes (Sord, Rosemary, and Philip Zimbardo). First, many times we get carried away by a generalized idea of a certain culture. For example, how many videos we have seen in the social media where Muslim people are rejected. It is an example of Islamophobia the reason of which is that people are victims of fear for all recent terrorist attacks. We judge equally all those belonging to that culture without realizing that many of them have been victims of a regime of oppression, poverty and death, and they only want freedom and peace. In addition to that Oscar, the main character of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao , also suffers from the rejected caused by these factors. Being a Dominican he does not fit into any cultural or racial group. Because of his skin color he was not accepted by the white kids and the kids of color, upon hearing him speak and seeing him move his body, shook their heads. You re not ... Habitus By Bourdieu The article Bourdieu and Habitus was not easy to read, but I found it enlightening as it helped to reinforce my understanding of Bourdieu s concept of habitus by comparing and relating different roles and norms of society. The term habitus derives from the Latin verb hebre meaning to have or to hold (Swartz, 2002, p. 615), the concept grows out of Bourdieu s attempt to address the question, how the human action follow regular pattern without being the product to some external structure, such as cultural norms? The concept of habitus invites one to think of human practices as regulated by transposable dispositions rather than cultural norms or by conscious attentions. • 51. Persuasive Essay On Refugees The issue of refugees heated up when President Donald Trump became president. He is totally against of letting refugees into the United States. As most people who aren t refugees don t really care what he does, but people who are refugees would have a different story. The UN has never really had any issues towards refugees until Donald Trump had became president. The growth of refugees has increased because of war, being discarded from the country, or not following the right religion. Historically we have let many refugees come into our country in the past. According to The Washington Post, global displacement levels declined to a historic low in 2005 but started escalating again because of a series of conflicts, including the U.S. invasion of Iraq. By mid 2015, the total number of refugees and internally displaced people had climbed to an all time high of more than 60 million people, the UNHCR estimates reflecting both the masses of people newly uprooted from war torn regions of Syria and South Sudan, as well as those displaced years ago from places like Pakistan and Afghanistan who still haven t been able to return home. So throughout the history, many refugees have been fleeing their countries but letting refugees into the United States, it could cause a lot of problems like it would cost the UN more money, there are billions of refugees why not help them all, and there could be terrorist in the group. What this evidence suggests is that this is a very significant ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 52. The World Labor Market The stabilization of the labor supply created the world market labor (Lecture, February 25, 2014). For example, this resulted in millions of people to come to America and involve themselves in working for our country. However, migrants tend to always get paid little amounts which does not really help them out the way that they need or hope for but they stick around anyways. In addition, increased migration primarily helps the government s economic state. For instance, the United States has a large labor market. There are numerous tasks that need to be competed on a daily basis. By hiring migrants they are able to pay them extremely little compared to the profits that are being made. Which means the government s economy is highly dependent on global workers (Robinson,267). This is why emigrants can be seen as heroes. And they should be treated with decency because dependent countries such as the US cannot afford to lose them (Robinson,267). In the article by Alejandro Portes, he explains that capital being global and labor being local is nothing new. That the modern world system has grown because of the abroad labor system occurring. (Portes,152). He also mentions that the process of transnational communities in the world system resulted in many advantages. However, he says those advantages are entirely on the side of those able to...thus turning globalization into the final apotheosis of capital... (Portes, 152). Overall a global capitalist society secures the economy of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 53. The Idea Of Eliminating Waste, Also Known As Muda, From The idea of eliminating waste, also known as muda, from various processes has been sought after and practiced for centuries. Waiting for a product that isn t being processed wastes time, excess inventory wastes space, and underutilization of employees wastes creativity. Lean may seem somewhat new, considering it was only formally identified in the 1990 s, however, there are now many businesses that put emphasis on the importance of lean. Some companies, such as Boeing, even have organizations focused on the implementation of lean. During the Boeing tour, it was evident that the company has put a lot of effort into incorporating lean systems into many of its internal functions at the Everett plant. In manufacturing, the fuselage automated... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One example would be the color coded vests employees wear. Blue vests represent materials management, brown is leadership, green is quality, so on and so forth. This makes it much easier to spot an employee from any function within Boeing, which eliminates wasted time. Our in class discussion about Boeing s standardization of tool boxes also reappeared during the Boeing tour. Though it hasn t been fully implemented yet, Boeing has required its employees to use the tool boxes provided by Boeing every day to standardize work methods. This ensures that the quality of work and methods used are consistent. Boeing further exhibited its commitment to the continuous improvement of its systems by forming a team dedicated to the planning and implementation of lean. Boeing has been recognized as a leader in lean innovations, but there are still many other companies striving towards leaner processes. According to a recent news article, GE Healthcare has implemented a very interesting use of new technology in its repair operations center in Milwaukee. With the use of self driving warehouse vehicles called OTTO , GE has been able to reduce the size of its repair stations by 40%, which means a sizeable cut in inventories. GE uses an entire fleet of OTTOs to deliver parts to workstations that perform thousands of repairs of medical devices weekly. How does OTTO do this? Parts are delivered on demand directly from the pick up point to the required destination, always automatically ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 54. Short Story Casey At The Bat In the short story Casey At The Bat the author uses humor to tell the story. I think the author does it to explain the depth and meaning of the story. The author makes it where we expect something totally different then what`s about to happen. Also I think the author uses it to tell the story better. I think this because in the beginning of the story all the people were excited because Casey was coming up to bat like they were screaming his name and everything. So that makes the reader think he`s a big deal because everyone is going crazy when Casey steps up to the plate. So the first to balls that were pitched to him, he missed like they were nothing and had no value like they didn t mean anything to him and the ref called strikes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 55. A Short Story Of A Ghost Story I shall begin my story with an experience I encountered at the age of sixteen at our small town s Latin school. The sweetness of many memories from that time still stirs and touches me with melancholy: dark and well lit alleys, houses and factories, faces and chimes, rooms affluent and comfortable, snug and amenable, the whole town was pregnant with secrets. The realms of day and night, two different universes coming from two opposite poles, mingled during this time. My parents home belonged to one realm. This realm was familiar to me in many ways strictness and love, model behaviour and school. This realm was thriving in clarity, brilliance and purity, polite conversations and good manners. This was the world in which morning hymns were sung and Christmas celebrated. Straight lines and paths led into the future: there was duty, love, forgiveness, good resolutions, wisdom and reverence. If one wanted an unsullied and ordinary life, one made sure one was in league with this world. The other realm, however, was completely different: it smelt different, spoke a different language, promised and demanded different things. This world contained ghost stories, rumours of scandals and servant girls. It was dominated by a loud mixture of horrendous, intriguing, frightful, mysterious things, including slaughterhouses and prisons, drunkards and screeching fishwives, calving cows, horse sinking to their deaths, talks of robberies, murders and suicides. All these wild and cruel, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 56. The Da Vinci Surgical System The da Vinci Surgical System Have you ever wondered if it was possible for a robot to perform surgery? The da Vinci surgical machine makes this possible (1). The da Vinci surgical system is a successful way to perform robotic surgery. All around the world, surgeons use the machine to make surgerymore precise. The invention of this system caused the medical world to scratch their heads in wonder of how great the system really is. In this research paper I will outline the development, uses, present, and future of the da Vinci surgical system. The da Vinci surgical system is a surgical tool that was developed in the late 1980s. The da Vinci surgical system is a device where a surgeon s hand movements are turned into smaller, more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Surgeries assisted by robots have comparable or better outcomes than hand done surgeries (5). The device has fail safe mechanisms, one of these mechanisms is that for the surgeon to be able to start the surgery, the surgeon s head must be placed in the viewer, if not, the system will remain locked and motionless (3). The robotic arms are kept from pivoting above or at the one inch entry incision by a zero point movement system during the procedure (3). Without this mechanism, the incision could be unintentionally torn (3). The power source for the machine includes a backup battery that allows the device to run for twenty minutes if the main hospital power source fails (3). This backup battery provides the hospital enough time to get the power back up and running (3). If a power outage were to occur, the manufacturers put an eject protocol on the device which is designed to prevent patient injury by quickly removing instruments and undocking the da Vinci surgical system within 30 to 60 seconds (8). Any instrument not made by Intuitive Surgical will be rejected by the machine due to a chip in each instrument (3). Information about each instrument is tracked by these chips for more precise control and to keep track of instrument usage to determine when it needs to be replaced (3). Many patients appreciate less recovery time and less pain post operation (13). Benefits of robotic assisted surgery include shorter hospital stay, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
