Leonid Fridman s Essay America Needs Its Nerds
In his essay America Needs Its Nerds , author Leonid Fridman discusses the stigma against so
called nerds and how these nerds are essential to America in keeping up with other countries. He
does this providing several examples. However, this essay is ultimately weak because of the
broadness of his examples, as well as the overarching strawman he creates to represent society .
By relying solely on these examples, he creates a very simple one sided argument To begin the
essay, Fridman states that our society is one which has only derogatory terms like nerd and geekfor
the intellectually curious and academically serious (lines 2 4). As a broad statement, this holds true.
However, in the context of having a living personwith a brain being the audience, this crumbles.
Nerd and geek defined by Fridman... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If I recall correctly, this profession was one originating before or during the Renaissance. He
claims this is telling a fact about our language and culture , despite most people probably not
knowing (or caring) what the word means beforehand (One might say that not knowing or caring
what nerd means is a sign of being a non intelligent non nerd, but does knowing that definition really
make you smarter than/superior to anyone else?). Fridman then states that at Harvard University, an
Ivy league university known for its prestigiousness, that anti intellectualism is rampant . He
provides an example saying that most students are ashamed of how much they study, but his lack
of concrete evidence for this example makes it seem extremely unlikely. Some may say that the
unlikeliness of it adds to the essay, in the nuh uh no way! sort of way, but truthfully, it doesn t. It
detracts from it by lessening his

Essay On Social Work
Social working is an industry so vast and extensive, but be so invisible if you have never been
exposed to it. Going into the social work field you have to have the value of selflessness and
great charity. The fields can range from someone off a GED to someone going for their second
doctorate. Wide range competitiveness, social workers first step is getting on a licensing
standpoint, but in reality you need to make yourself an acceptable offering for the field of
competition. Several amount of references who could can give an honest record of your aptitude.
That is just the first step, entering the field. Social workis competitive, but also very populous,
with a broad spectrum of practices from militaries to schools, and is prominent throughout the
globe. These practices can then be broken down into even smaller categories. The medical field,
there is more than enough social work in this area that can be forgotten. The emotional trauma
patients suffer from all types of diseases, the casualties of war and workforce, or just burnt out
workers, such as the nurses and doctors who have to care for the endless amount of patients.
Each of these minor fields may take a different type of social worker. The fields are all growing,
in fact the job outlook for social workers is faster than average at 12%. Use of evidence based
practices is increasingly prominent in social work in the substance abuse disorders yet
demonstrated effectiveness in the treatment continues to be low. Social

Memphis Three Stereotypes
The Memphis Three might have been boys, but they took their sentence like men. In Deal Frees
West Memphis Three in Arkansas by Campbell Robertson; he explains how the trial played out
from start to finish. What angered the media was the horrible trial, the stereotype the Memphis
three went under and the closing of the case. Justice was not served for the Memphis three. It is
almost impossible for justice to be served when the trail was a mess. There was a 12 hour police
interrogation of Jessie Misskelley. He is intellectually disabled, causing him to give a false
confession. The police should have known the psychology of false confession and shouldn t have
interrogated Mr. Misskelley for 12 hours. The sentences were based on hearsay testimony of
witnesses who heard the boys talk about the murders: ...the defendant had been motivated as
members of a satanic cult (Robertson 4). Hearsay doesn t prove anything in the court of law. The
juryis supposed to know nothing about the case; but of course one juror already had his mind set

This factor caused them to be the driving force of the investigation. The police reasons for them

These claims were obviously pointless as Mecinda Smith a supporter even pointed out herself.
She wore black and had long hair like Mr. Echols, there is no reports of Ms. Smith murdering any
boys. People go through clothing phases and should not be mistaken as a satanic cult. Mr. Echols

the head suspect knows he is being discriminated on just know there is something wrong. There
was no evidence that the Memphis Three was a satanic cult. The police evidence against them was
their appearance. There was no justice when a conviction is based on someone s

Case A Retail Dry Cleaning Shop
A retail dry cleaning store cleans two piece suits for $12 each. Its patrons are individual walk ins.
There are several similar dry cleaners in the city and this firm offers no special services. The firm
can clean up to 1,000 suits per week. It has fixed costs of $3,500 per week (amortization on its
equipment, rent, taxes, and salaries) plus a costof $4 per suit for chemicals, packaging materials,
order processing, and incidentals. Volume per week has been fairly constant at 600 suits.
A firm that operates three hotels in the city is asking the store to clean 150 two piece staff
uniforms per week at a price of $6.75 per suit. The process would be the same as the store uses on
suits. Because there are several dry cleaning stores ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Why or why not?
The special job still should be accepted even if the hotel chain is only willing to pay $4.25 per
uniform. As mentioned previously, the price at $4.25 is still greater than the Marginal Costat $4.00
and therefore it is still profitable for the firm to continue and make the uniform. The increase in
revenue would be $637.50 ($4.25*150), whereas the increase in costs would only be $600
($400*150). Therefore, even though the $4.25 is far below the $12.00 market price and the
average total cost of $8.67, it is still a profitable order.
Calculation below: =$4.25 =$4.00 =$8.67
3.Suppose the hotel chain is willing to negotiate the price. When you enter the negotiations, what is
the lowest price you are willing to accept (i.e., your reservation price)? (Of course, you will not
announce this price to the other party.)
Since this firm is in a perfectly competitive market, they must charge the same price in the
industry to be competitive. Since they have excessive capacity of up to 400 suits above their
normal sales, the incremental job allows them to negotiate a price anywhere revenue is greater
than the variable cost per shirt. The lowest price that the dry cleaning service should accept is the
point where the Market Price=Marginal Cost =Marginal Revenue, which is $4.00 per uniform.
This is only the case because the dry cleaning service has the excess capacity and

My Sister Candice And I Were Sitting At Silence
My sister Candice and I were sitting in silence as the plane started to take off. As they had
announced before it was a full flight so Candice and I met a guy named Townsin and we talked
the whole flight. He showed us some magic tricks and Candice tried to do one, but she failed to
do so. When we landed in Omaha we said goodbye to our new friend and continued on our new
adventures. We had to wait for our friend Savannah to come and pick us up at the airport and
take us to the hotel where we were all staying. Savannah was working at the Olympic trials so
she and her dad Chuck had came a week earlier to help out. Chuck is the CEO of USA

When we woke up sometimes we would go to prelims and watch some people swim, or we

would go do something for the rest of the day before we had to go back for finals. Once we

to see some more of Omaha. We walked around and there was a big lake and they had stepping

the days we went down to go rent bikes so we could cross the state line and we could be in two

Lessons from Recent Disasters and the Development of...
Taiwan experienced a lot of disasters in recent several years, including a huge earthquake in 1999,
air crash in 1998 and 2001, and many typhoons and floods every year and SARS in 2003. These
incidents created demands that challenged our medical infrastructures. The emergency medical
preparedness programs evolved a lot in response to medical surge in these disasters.
In our system, several characteristics should be clarified in the beginning:
1.In our multiple casualty incident plans require to send hospital doctors to the incidents
immediately to save lives, disregarding what they can do or if the scene is under control. The
emergency medical services system of Taiwan was established in 1995, and the fire fighters were

untrained, uncontrolled and unreliable responders, the system will become paralyzed. Another

Facing the potential challenges from disasters, some actions have been adopted based on the

logistics, communication, information, engineering, and cook. For an event that the
infrastructure and support of community is preserved, a MOU will be deployed, but in a huge
disaster, three MOU with one MSU will be sent as a team. They should set up a field clinic and
provide emergency medical care for several days. Some teams are speccial trained for hazmat, bio

Analysis Of Chaim Potok s The Chosen, Verbal...
Since the beginning of time, humans have endeavored to express their thoughts to other humans.
Early on, humans may have expressed their thoughts through only body language and primitive
grunts; however, as civilization progressed, humans developed intelligible language. From
development of that early language, written language was sprouted. From some development of
that written language, other forms of communication came into being. Today, many forms of
communication exist; however, all of them center around verbal communication. In Chaim
Potok s critically acclaimed novel, The Chosen, verbal communication, or the lack thereof, is a
main theme. The lack of communication, silence, in The Chosen is used by Potok not only to
show the suffering of his characters but also to symbolize the struggles of the Jewish people.
Potok uses silence prominently in The Chosen to show isolation. Both of the protagonists in the
book experience an isolating silence; for example, the silence imposed upon Danny is a main
component of the novel s plot. Danny s pain and isolation is caused by his father s silence toward
him. Reb Saunders, Danny s father, doesn t speak with Danny because he believes that being
silent toward Danny is what is best for him; however, the other characters of the book see only that
the silence causes Danny suffering. Reb s silence toward Danny would seem cruel in a normal
situation, but in Danny s situation, it seems to be atrocious. In the forties, being a Jew

Who Is Better Than Stand-Up Comedy
We are living in a time where it seems as if we as a people cannot agree on anything. We are
living what appears to be a turbulent time in a nation that is dividing further and further apart. With
all the terrible things going on in the nation we all need an escape from time to time. To me one of
the best escapes form the chaos in the world is laughter. What better way to get that laughter
delivered to you, than stand up comedy? Over the years I have not met many people that do not
enjoy going to a comedy show. The one thing that I have found is that most people either do not
know that comedy shows are going on all around them or; they will not go to a show if the person
is not famous. As a stand up comedian myself I know how hard it can be... Show more content on

That is why I cannot understand why it can be like pulling teeth to get people to come out and
support a live local stand up comedy show. Is it really worth it to spend an exorbitant amount of
money on a ticket to go watch a world famous comedian in an arena or a theater? I am not trying
to say that those shows are not fun and that those comedians do not deserve to have us go watch
them, they worked hard to get there. What I am saying is, that going to a comedy club setting is
a much more enjoyable experience. Instead of spending an arm and a leg on a ticket. You can
spend a fraction of the price and probably get friends to come along with you. It is so much
better to sit at a table full of friends instead of in a row in a cramped chair next to strangers. With
the money you saved, you and your friends can go out to eat before, and order more drinks at
your table at the show. There is not much better than getting dressed up and going out and having
a fun night with a group of loved ones. Many people are afraid of going into intimate settings for
fear of being picked on by the comedians on stage. I am here to tell you, that the vast majority of
comedians do not pick on the crowd. It is already hard enough to get a crowd there, why would
they make them not feel comfortable. They do however, interact with the crowd making the show
more inclusive. Something that you would not get at an arena or theater show, unless you buy
front row tickets. The audience just becomes an amorphous mass of nothingness for me, there s no
intimacy Because in terms of my material.... you should have no more than 300 people at a gig
because you need to see the whites of a comedian s

An Analysis Of The Banjo By Louis Gottschalk
To recover from the storm, I select The Banjo by Louis Gottschalk as my next piece. In contrast to
the fierce thunderstorm in Moonlight s third movement, Banjo is full of cheerful and light hearted
melodies. As if a sunshower, the music refreshes our mind and energizes our spirit.
Staccato, one of the most remarkable characteristics in this piece, brings energy to the entire music.
In the subject line of the A section (this piece has a five part A B A B A form), the melody of the
left hand purely consists of staccatos whose short, bouncing feature opens up a dynamic theme.,
This dynamic is further expressed as the piece enters B section, since the high pitched notes have
more distinguishable sounds and a more rapid speed. This movement then culminates at five major
chords whose high pitch and strong, sharp volume produce an extraordinarily penetrating sound.
All these movements delineates a playful scene of rain dancing at every corner of the world: on a
roof, a stream, an umbrella, a petal of flower, etc. By reflecting sunlight, every drop of rain looks
like a shining crystal that illuminates the surroundings and illuminates our heart.
Another interesting point of this piece is the use of an old music, Capetown Races. Capetown
Races resembles the tune of nursery rhymes and introduces an innocent, childlike sense. In The
Banjo, the main melody of the old song comes from the right hand region and are expressed through
octave chords. As the main melody repeats, the notes

Common Misunderstanding about Buddhism
A common misunderstanding of about Buddhism exist today, especially in the concept of
reincarnation. Since the origin of Buddhism derived from India where most people practice
Hinduism during that time, the common misunderstanding is that many people believes that when
one passed on and reincarnate, the individual possess the same souls as the one before. This is
wrong because the Buddhismdoes not believed in a permanent self in one s body.
The doctrine of Buddhism is to attain enlightenment and be released from the cycle of rebirth and
death, thus attaining Nirvana. Whereas, the doctrine of Hinduism was to escape the cycle of
reincarnation, and attain salvation. In Buddhism, rebirth occurs as a result of ignorance in the
unconscious life stream at the time of death. This term means a mind containing illusion and
defilement such as frustration, greed and selfishness are among them. The unconscious life stream
is considered to be endless stream of energy stretching back into the past and future. It is sometimes
known as the Mind.
Karma, being a powerful energy act upon the unconscious life stream and a rebirth occurs. This new
Rebirth does not occur with the any similar characteristic as the previous person had, because these
characteristics were completely erased during death. The only thing during the rebirth of the person
is the Mind. The mind is also an insubstantial energy, in other words it neither physical nor is it
spiritual properties but supernatural energy

Tim Tebow Religious Beliefs
Tim Tebow, Colin Kaepernick, and Kurt Warner are popular outspoken athletes who express their
personal beliefs on the field. Some fans love these athletes expressing their beliefs on the field,
but some of their outspoken beliefs are a distraction. Their expression of beliefs have led to more
athletes making their personal beliefs known, but not every athlete s personal belief on the field are
about religion. The outspoken beliefs of athletes should be banned from professional sports if
sports fans believe it is such a problem, but when they do that they should discourage athletes
from having any sort of tattoo on them. Professional athletes sharing their personal and religious
beliefs on the field, should not be outlawed by sports coaches to express themselves with their
personal belief that include religious tattoos on the field, because professional athletes sharing
their personal and religious beliefs on the field distract fans from the game. One of these popular
athletes is Tim Tebow, acknowledged by many as the greatest player in the history of college
football. Tebow went onto play in the National Football Leaguefor the Denver Broncos and New

Quebec Sovereigntists Swot Analysis
This essay looks to discuss Quebec sovereigntists and federalists, and how they differ in their
understandings of Canada and Quebec. To accomplish this, the paper looks at three points of
contention; how to understand history, the nature of the Quebec state, and recognition of Quebec.
The three points of contention show where the two view diverge and why, but the paper views
these points as merely pieces of the puzzle. As such only after looking at all three points does the
paper reach a conclusion about the real differences between the two views. The paper concludes
that sovereigntists view Quebecas distinct enfranchised nation within the confines of Canada, and
while viewing Canada as a subjugator and an enemy to Quebec. In comparison,... Show more

First, only the sovereigntists us Quebec`s history as a means to define Canada. Do to the nature
of their relationship, they see Canada as a force that undermines Quebec. The federalists may
agree that Canada undermined Quebec in the past, but this does not lead them to make any
decisions about the country as whole like the sovereigntists. But this does mean that both agree
about the nature of Quebec`s history. Secondly, both want to move on from this history. But this
is where differences arise. Federalists hold that to move on from the past, Quebec must simply
forget about it and instead value progress. But to the sovereigntists it s not so simple. They view
history as creating a path for Quebec`s future, a path of subjugation by Canada. As such, the
sovereigntists search for a critical juncture to create a new path. They conclude is sovereignty as
it naturally follows from the history of Quebec. This in turn brings us to the final comparison, the
justification for sovereignty. Sovereigntists see sovereignty as following naturally from the
history of Quebec, and furthermore being justified by the nature of the history. Federalists
however do not. This is presumably due to the fact that they do not see history as creating a path,
and as such see the future as open and free. Thus the history of Quebec causes sovereigntists to
have a negative view of Canada, create a path for Quebec, and justifying sovereignty, while
federalists see the past as not

Essay on Major Slave Rebellions of the South
Major Slave Rebellions of the South
Slavery in North America began with the Portuguese in the seventeenth century. Increasing and
spreading significantly, slavery eventually became an economic staple in the southern region of
America. Although widespread and popular, rebellion against this human bondage was inevitable.
Slaves in the south rebelled and revolted against their owners many times; however, these efforts
were often suppressed. Although most revolts ended in failure, some did impact the feelings of
slavemasters, and unfortunately, worsened their living conditions. Throughout American history,
the most notable and significant slave rebellions in the south were The Stono Rebellion, The Vesey

In the early 18th century, South Carolina experienced a boom in their rice industry. This caused
a shift from a frontier to a plantation economy, affecting the quality of life of slaves. Their tasks
switched from farming, hunting, fishing, and raising cattle, to being trapped in the rice fields.
The slaves felt much resent for this extremely difficult, straining work. In the 1730s, there was
an outbreak of many slave conspiracies in the West Indies, especially in the Bahamas and
Antigua. Furthermore, many runaway slaves from South Carolina had made their way down to
Florida, where Spain offered them freedom. This inspired slaves to fight for their freedom. As a
result of the Stono Rebellion, slaveowners came to fear their slaves and the threat of future
uprisings. Because of this fear, The Slave Code of South Carolina of 1740 was created. This code
greatly limited rights of the slaves living in the region.
The Vesey Slave rebellion was planned by Denmark Vesey, and although it was never
accomplished, its effects were felt across the southern region of the country. Vesey bought his
freedom after winning a lottery, then became an advocate for equality, inspiring slaves all over
Charleston, South Carolina. He organized a group to carry out his plan to steal ammunition from
Charleston, kill the governor, burn down the city, and kill all white men they would encounter. This
uprising was planned to take place on

Redemption In Henry IV By William Shakespeare
Redemption often manifests itself in those who seek affirmation from those around them due to
their own actions. During the 14th century, as the Christian influence continues to spread across
Europe, self awareness begins to increase among the population, and with it, the need for
acceptance. When acceptance paired with self awareness welds itself to the hearts of a nation,
people increase the need of redemption, rather than forgiveness. Especially common in royalty, the
need to prove one s worth often guides the choices made in sporadic moments. Throughout Henry
IV, written by William Shakespeare, the theme of redemption weaves itself into the life of Prince
Hal as he seeks approval from his father as well as from himself, to demonstrate that redemption
becomes necessary in order to truly be at peace with oneself.
Viewed as useless and a curse, Prince Hal ruins his princely reputation according to his father,
King Henry IV. As riot and dishonor stain the brow, of the Prince, King Henry IV grows
increasingly impatient with his son, even entertaining the idea that Hal not be his son (I.I).
Drinking, pranks, and utter disregard for others all culminate into the average day of Prince Hal,
and none of which reflect well on him, clearly. To make matters worse, the young Harry Percy, or
Hotspur, continues to excel in battle, and so, by comparison, making Hal look even more
undesirable. The true royal duties include battle, council, and according to Henry IV, staying out of

feels. For better for worse we can?t divorce him. (p.8, Medea). However, a husband tired of
domesticity, Goes out sees friends and enjoys himself?. (p.8and 9, Medea). Medea compares the
virtual slavery of women to the absolute freedom of men, showing the inequality and
disempowerment of women in society at that time.
Jason?s chauvinist beliefs are put under the microscope. Jason airs his views about what all women
want: If they?re (women) happy in bed, they?re happy everywhere . By comparing Medea?s pure
feminism to Jason?s selfish chauvinism, Euripides brokers sympathy and support for feminism from
the audience.
Medea questions the firmly held belief in Greek society that women are weak and passive.
Wanting revenge on Jason for his betrayal of her, Medea must take control of the situation, a
stereotypical masculine quality. Though she cannot become a man or take power like a man, she
perceives her

Passive Transport
The two big sections that all forms of cellular transportation fall into are passive transport and active
transport. Passive transport is the moving of material along a concentration gradient (a high
concentration to a low concentration). Passive transport requires no use of energy because there is
nothing that you need to use energy to work against. Active transport is the moving of material
against a concentrationgradient (a low concentration to a high concentration). Active transport
requires the use of energy because the movement of the material is going against the flow.

The I-Other Duality
Zygmunt Bauman best describes the self/other duality where identities are set up in dichotomies in
this quote:
Woman is the other of man, animal is the other of human, stranger is the other of native,

insanity the other of reason, lay public the other of the expert, foreigner the other of state subject,

Human susceptibility to snake venom is generally estimated from the LD50 for rodents. The
next factor in assessing the danger of a partiticular species of snake is the dose of venom that is
actually introduced into the tissues. Some types of snakes have an extremely efficient
mechanism of injection venom with a sing strike; others have poor success in doing so. The
amount of venom produced by snakes that is available for secretion with a bite also varies
between kinds of snakes, and between individuals (usually by size) of any one species (reptipage
1). Symptoms of venomous snakebites. The symptoms vary not only with the type of venom
injected, but also with the amount. A snake may release no venom at all, or it may release as
much as 75% of the total amount stored in its venom glands. Often when a snake bites in self
defense, it injects less venom than when it attacks its prey. The physical condition of the victim
and the location of the bite also affect the severity of the symptoms. A bite into a muscle is less
dangerous than a bite into a blood vessel, for example, because toxins in the blood are quickly
circulated through the body. General symptoms of snakebite include localized pain and swelling
soon after the bite occurs, followed by nausea, tingling or numbness, weakness, and shortness of
breath. If victims do not receive treatment within a few hours, they may suffer convulsions, fall into
a coma,

Thanks to those efforts Catalans can be proud to acknowledge that their languages and dialects are
the most well kept, normalized and preserved in the country, their continuous fight since the very

those who are foreigners and Catalan to natives.
Unfortunately, a very different thing has happened in Galicia and Basque Country; since, by the

preserving languages. In Basque Country, the reason for these lack of protectionism towards
language was the persecution Basques suffer during the Civil War, they were accused of

reason, and all of these actions made them a little afraid of protecting language even years after

Life In The Iron Mills And The Simplification Of Black...
Life in the Iron Mills the Simplification of Black Suffering.
Rebecca Harding Davis Life in the Iron Mills illustrates class conflict and the exploitative nature of
American industrialization. It has been regarded as one of the first notable examples of American
realism that portrayed the burdens of industrial factory workers. Davis uses slavery comparisons
throughout the novella, this rhetoric threatens the potency of her work.
Class disparities serve to isolate the impoverished from the bourgeois, this alienation exists
because of class but Davis seeks to create this division by race. For example Hugh is worn down
and blackened by his hard labor.
This comparison becomes problematic when she equates the mill workers position with that of
chattel slaves. By doing so she ignores the realities of both struggles, Davis rhetoric could lead
some to believe that the plight of mill workers is even more severe than slavery.
Though in reality the two only share a few similarities, factory work was far less severe than
chattel slavery that lasted over two centuries.
Davis used this comparison since she was able to witness the atrocities of both chattel and wage
slavery during her lifetime. The use of a slavery comparison would be understood by readers since
abolition was controversial at the time Iron Mills was published.
Yet black suffering is only a device to describe the main subject of white mill workers, she
inaccurately depicts chattel slavery and downplays

Gross Domestic Product
I.Introduction
1.Introduction and objectives
The wealth and success of a country is something that theoretically is very hard to measure and
quantify. However, tools called Indexes can be used to report on the past, present or future state
of country. The usage for these Indexes is quite obvious: they can be used to benchmark the
situation of a country compared to its peers, create historical trends in order to estimate if any
improvements have been made throughout the years in multiple fields. Of course, they can also
be used as political tools for the world leaders for internal purposes (linked to government
policies) but also external policies as it can be a mean to determine the power that a country can
have on the international level. The main Index that has been used for the past 80 years and is still
used nowadays to measure the economic wealth is the Gross Domestic Product (or GDP). It is
important to remember that the initial goal of these indexes (and particularly the GDP) is to
measure and give a detailed report of the addition, subtraction and multiplication of certain numbers
that compose a country s economy. Therefore, a measurement tool is not an end goal in itself.
Nevertheless, this index became the reason for an international competition between countries to
decide which one is the most able to bring this number to the maximum. This might not be an issue
if the GDP was not mainly a measurement of the economic wealth of a country. During the years,

The Storm by Kate Chopin
The first thing I noticed about Kate Chopin s The Storm, is that it is utterly dripping with sexual
imagery and symbolism. Our heroine, if you will, seems to be a woman with normally restrained
passions and a well defined sense of propriety, who finds herself in a situation that tears down her
restraint and reveals the vixen within. I wonder if it was intentional that the name Calixta makes
me think of Calypso the nymph from Greek mythology. If half of the sexual symbolism I found in
this story was intentional, Chopin was a genius. I was quite taken with the sexual imagery of the
colors mentioned: white, and red. There is also mention a place called Assumption, while there s
nothing written on it in the bible, I believe it s the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It s no secret that storms bring a unique energy, something that is almost primal in nature. Animals
react to coming storms because of this energy, I once had a cat who would pounce all over the
house in the hours before a storm arrived, when the storm hit, he would sprint from room to room,
his tail bushed out like a bottle brush and his pupils so large you couldn t see the iris. As the
storm builds in its fervor and ferocity, tension and passion build between Calixta and AlcГ©e to
match. It begins with the gusts of wind that threatened to snatch away the clothing that was
outside, hence AlcГ©e grabbing the trousers, and follows as the water beat in upon the boards
in driving sheets, then the rain beat upon the low, shingled roof with a force and clatter that
threatened to break an entrance (Chopin 336). The language grows more telling in that just after
there is mention of something threatening to break an entrance, Chopin describes Calixta s
bedroom. The fact that it adjoins the room they re in is completely unnecessary, unless there s a
reason for the reader to be aware of the bedroom. As the storm rolls on, Calixta goes to the
window where she stands when the lightning bolt strikes a tree in the field. Lightning is a
glorified spark, I believe this symbolizes the spark of passion renewed in both of our adulterers as

Comparing the Women in Dubliners, A Portrait of the...
Characterization of Women in Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and Ulysses
Joyce s depiction of women is characterized by a high degree of literary self consciousness,
perhaps even more so than in the rest of his work. The self consciousness emerges as an awareness
of both genre and linguistic expectations. contrasting highly self conscious, isolated literary men (or
men with literary aspirations) with women who follow more romantic models, even stereotypes. In
Dubliners, Joyce utilizes a clichГ©d story of doomed love ending in death physical or spiritual in A

A Painful Case is built on clichГ©s. The story of a misanthropic bachelor who meets an
emotionally frustrated wife, develops a bond, then recoils at intimacy could not be more
formulaic; she even dies of sudden failure of the heart s action (114). The irony is clear the
suddenness really took place four years earlier. Joyce wrote Dubliners to appeal to both a mass
audience and scholars, and A Painful Case seems particularly driven to the popular reader and,
with its tale of unrequited love, to female readers. James Duffy is skeptical and irritated by
exactly this kind of bland, superficial writing: She asked him why did he not write out his
thoughts. For what, he asked her, with careful scorn. To compete with phrasemongers, incapable of
thinking consecutively for sixty seconds? To submit himself to the criticisms of an obtuse middle
class which entrusted its morality to policemen and its fine arts to impresarios? (111) Joyce both
launches into self criticism and evades it; by critiquing the method he employs, he demonstrates a
self awareness that lifts his work beyond this middle class production. Duffy, too, practices this self
awareness in conjunction with Joyce. At the end of a token biographical paragraph, all delivered in
the third person past tense, we learn this tidbit: He had an odd autobiographical habit which led him
to compose in his mind from time to time a short sentence about himself containing a

Walnut Street Jail
Although some say that incarcerating people or giving them the death penalty is the only way to
punish criminals, there are alternatives to these such as halfway houses, probation or community
corrections and more. Most of these projects have helped criminals get onto a better path and
rethink their life decisions. There are several ways to reduce crimerates and all of them are
beneficial in one way or another. Imprisonment has been a form of punishment since before the
American Revolution. It has been going on for hundreds of years, but the tactics that were used
before and now are completely different. The Walnut Street Jail, sited on Walnut Street, was the first

Smart probation strategies ...offer better, cheaper, and more effective options (Alternatives to
Incarceration, 1). These programs are usually for people who have been incarcerated for any
drug related crime. Many states have been using these strategies to decrease any drug associated
offences. One of the most well known and with the best results is Project HOPE. This program
started in 2004 and it helps change the way people deal with drugs and their behavior. Because
this project works so well, more that 1,500 probationers have been enrolled in HOPE
(Alternatives to Incarceration, 1). This program has been known to reduce crime rate, mainly in
Hawaii, but there are different projects in the United States that are based off of HOPE. An
additional Smart Probation Strategy is The 24/7 Sobriety Project. This program is for driver
who have had multiple DUI s and who would like to be able to drive again. This works by having
the partakers stay fully sober of any alcohol or illegal substance, which will not only help get
them their driving privileges back, but will keep them out of jail as well. There are many more
programs out there that could help felons get their life back on track, it all just depends on whether
they want to make an effort or not.

The Mars Exploration Rover Mission (Spirit and Opportunity...
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched two similar twin robotic rovers
which were Spirit and Opportunity toward Mars on 10 June and 7 July 2003 (NASA 2012). Spirit
and Opportunity landed in Gusev Crater on 4 January 2004 and in Meridiani Planum on 25
January 2004 respectively (NASA2012). Opportunity is still operating and roving after 10 years
on the Martian surface while final communication of Spirit to the Earth took place on 22 March
2010, which is around six years into its mission (NASA 2012). The rovers were thought to last 20
times longer as compared to its original design. As part of NASA s MarsExploration Program, the
Mars Exploration Rovermission is a continuous multi mission effort to study Mars as a possible
habitation for past or present life and to look for signs of life as well as to prepare for human
exploration. Primary objective of the Mars Exploration Rover mission is to explore and
characterize a wide range of soils and rocks that possess clues or evidences to past water activity on
Mars (NASA 2012).
It is hard to get to Mars and it is even harder to land on Mars, thus Spirit and Opportunity had to
overcome numerous challenges in order to land on Mars and to carry out their missions. These
two rovers were required to fly through approximately 483 million kilometers of deep space and a
very precise landing spot had to be targeted (Jet Propulsion Laboratory 2011). Although their flight
paths can be adjusted along the way,

Positive And Negative Consequences Of Repealing The Jones Act
Cost Analysis:
I firmly believe, repealing the jones act would certainly make American economy prosperous. In
this section I will bolster my opinion by analyzing some positive and negative consequences of
repealing the act in terms of cost, economic impact, and national safety.
Positive Consequences of repealing Jones act:
Repealing the Jones Act could benefit the American economy, as it is cheaper to build ships outside
USA and hiring foreign crew
Building ships in America is certainly costly affair. It could cost five times more than the shipbuilt
outside USA due high labor rates. Thus, repealing the jones act, means American companies can
lookout for cheaper options and buy vessels made in foreign countries at cheaper rates.
Wages for foreign crews are substantially lower than American crews. American crews cost nearly
4.5 times more than foreign crews. These wages make up nearly 75 percent of the operating cost
difference between the two. If foreign shippers were permitted to enter the U.S. market, American
companies would be forced to compete, and lower both their wages and prices to more reasonable
levels.
Cost of living would be significantly cheaper in states like Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico
Currently people from states like Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico have to spend a lot of money to
get goods due to higher freight transportation rates imposed by the Jones act. For example, it costs
about $750 to ship a 45 foot container from Los Angeles to Shanghai, but it costs $8,500 to ship the
same container from Los Angeles to Honolulu. This means that it costs 11 times more money to
ship something to some domestic locations than international ones. Thus, repealing jones act, the
cost of living in Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico would decrease greatly as residents would not have to
spend as much money to get goods, from mainland America or from a foreign nation.
Economic boost for American Industries
Relaxing the Jones Act would lead to an economic boost for many industries across the nation, and
provide more goods at lower prices for American consumers. However, many Americans re simply
unaware of the impact that the extra shipping costs of the Jones Act has on their lives, and therefore
efforts to

North American Colonization Research Paper
The discovery of North America sparked a new era of exploration, expansion, and colonization.
Many European countries took the opportunity to develop a new territory where they could prosper
financially and benefit their home country as much as possible. The trip overseas was strenuous, as
was maintaining positive relationships with Native Americans and running a successful colony.
Although all European countries who showed interest in establishing territories in the Americashad
their own reasons for doing so, some countries did a better job executing their colonizing than
others. Britain, France, and Spainwere the three most successful countries in terms of colonizing a
new land for their country.
The Spanish were amongst the best explorers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People emigrated in hopes of gaining land, improving their social statuses and wealth, and to
convert the Natives to Christianity. Many poor beggars sought new work as indentured
servants, and obtaining land of their own after serving 4 7 years. This was a chance for them to
regain their social status, an opportunity that would not be available back home. It was also a
gamble, since life expectancy was very low for servants due to being overworked, as well as
susceptible to diseases. To many, however, the risk was worth it. In England, there were massive
amounts of unemployed workers. Poverty and crime increased dramatically, but by moving to the
new colonies the poor received more of a fresh start. In Virginia, the colonists profited from
harvesting tobacco, but they were overridden by diseases and did not have a healthy lifestyle. In
New England, there was far less death by diseases and had more middle class residents than the
poor servants down South. With Puritan leadership, the colonists had a better worth ethic and
kinder values than those in Virginia. Though they fought many bloody wars with the Natives, they
were also able to convert many of them. The English were able to obtain even more territory, such
as Barbados in the West Indies where they profited from sugar. Overall, the English were able to
strengthen their economy with new

Exxon Bligh Reef
In 1989 the oil tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground on Bligh Reef located off the coast of Alaska.
The Exxon Valdez spilled thousands of barrels of oil into Prince William Sound, which was the
biggest oil spill to date. Thousands of animals and hundreds of thousands of birds died in the
days immediately after the spill. The fishing and tourism industries suffered losses estimated in
the millions of dollars (Loeb McCall, 2008). The incident was investigated thoroughly and legal
cases were pursued against ExxonMobile. There were several parts to this case. Parts of the
case were not disputed and understood as proper protocol, this included why the ship went off
path into the Bligh Reef area (Loeb McCall, 2008). The ship had recognized icebergs and had
notified the coastal guard of their new intended path in order to avoid the icebergs (Loeb McCall,
2008). The point that was disputed was the condition of Captain Hazelwood during the route
change. It was believed that when Captain Hazelwood left the bridge (which was not proper

Exxon appeared to respond to the situation in the form of compensating each claim in the total
sum of upward to 2 billion dollars (Loeb McCall, 2008). Their ethical implications at the time
were admitting fault, paying for all cleanup, and deploying their own people to help clean up the
spill. The main ethical implication that faced Exxon was their decision to allow their Captain to
maintain his position even with their knowledge of his substance abuse. Many argue that this
incident could have been avoided if Exxon would have removed the Captain from his post or had
him switch to a position where safety is a main focus. Another ethical concern was Exxon fighting

Privacy in the Online World Essay
Privacy is something we don t really think about. Privacy is the last thing that comes up in our
minds. The Internet is easily accessed by many people and can be hacked to find out important
private information about anyone. People all over the world access the Internet, and when
private information is posted online one person is going to be able to view that information no
matter the privacy setting a person may use. The first article that I will use is Who Is This Man,
and Why Is He Screaming? by Rachel Kadish. This article is about the author writing an article
about her cousin Noam Galai. Galai took a photo of him self and posted it on Flickr. Months later
he realized that his image was being used all around the world. The second... Show more content on

Some people have the tendency of misusing the Internet and risking their privacy. Technology is
so powerful that any thing that you upload to the Internet will be in the power of other people.
Like Singer said about the new technology it has made us open up to the world, so now
everybody can see us and know who we are. Galai s photo went international when he posted the
picture of himself yawning. This is why people have to be careful when posting things on the
Internet, to protect their own privacy.
In addition the protecting ourselves, having more privacy can protect the rights of other individuals.
Kadish asks herself If your face isn t private property, what is? (Kadish 262). Kadish is right
because if Galai posted a picture of himself and other people used it, then how many other people
are having the same dilemma? If Galai would have had more privacy, no one could have had the
rights to use his photo. Peter singer says, We sign away our privacy in exchange for the
conveniences of modern living, giving corporations access to information about our financial
circumstances and our spending habits, which will then be used to target us for ads or to analyze
our customer habits (Singer 462). With the use of technology our privacy is decreasing. Kadish
also says There s something glorious and terrible about a world in which a picture of one s face can

Puerto Rico Narrative
Koki, Koki, Koki . It was Christmas night, where me and my family took a roundtrip to Puerto
Rico, to visit my father s side of the family. As I m walking out of the airplane, and into the
airport, I hear these noises Koki, Koki, Koki , in a repetitive melody. I start wondering what is
that noise and where is it coming from , and behold, it is a small frog. That was the first thing I
noticed once I stepped inside Puerto Ricos airport. But why did my familyand I book a trip to
Puerto Rico? To see frogs? Certainly not. My family is very disconnected, so we decided to fly
to Puerto Rico Christmas night and spend a week there to recommunicate with our family. But in
the midst of visiting my family, we also went to festivals to celebrate the upcoming year. Oh my
was the first thing that came up in mind, as I saw that I was surrounded by mountains everywhere.
The airport itself was on top of a mountain, and knowing how I am scared of heights, I began to
think what did I just get myself into ?
As the next day went by, we went to go see my family where they lived in a town called El Rincon

The Revolution, And The Key Causes Of The Mexican Revolution
The Mexican Revolution The Mexican Revolution began November 20, 1910, and ended on
May 21, 1920. The revolution was against the regime of Porfirio Diaz who reigned for 35 years,
after Mexico gained its independence from Spain. and was not a good president in the sense that
he failed to support the middle and lower classes of Mexico. It was run by the middle (some in the
middle (A very a little amount) and all in the lower classes, and they were all influenced by
Francisco I. Madero. Although the lower classes didn t originally full on oppose Diaz they felt
neglected as a people. Madero saw this and sought out to influence the people of the country to
revolt, so that they could then shift their views completely. Madero writes the Plan de San Luis
Potosi, which was a political document written by Madero to describe how he was wrongly
imprisoned by Diaz in order for him to lose the election. Madero also wrote the document to
spread new ideas on what democracy was, and how to eradicate corruption in Mexico s
government. With the publication of this document support for Diaz and his presidency easily
disappeared eventually causing him to resign. Madero then ran for president and won the election
properly. But he only reigned for two years before being assassinated, by none other than the
military governors, military, and lower classes because Madera failed to make any change in the
social classes. A key factor that lead to his assignation was that the

As more of America s educational resources move online, onto video, and onto disks, it becomes

more sophisticated than classroom education. We have more (and better) resources to draw upon.
We can adapt the latest technology more quickly (Price, 1994). Home schoolingin itself provides an

home schooling, through which instructors and students make use of online resources and

Since public schools are assigned on a geographical basis, parents, guardians and even students, are
faced with having to attend schools that are not necessarily high ranking or offer excellent
education. public schools are turning out a poor product illiterate and unprepared graduates. For
example, American 13 year olds have been documented as having math skills that rank below their
counterparts in 14 other developed countries. One survey noted that just one third of high school
juniors could place the Civil War in the correct half century. Equally troubling, public schools
have become crime scenes where drugs are sold, teachers are robbed, and homemade bombs are
found in lockers. Compounding the situation, teachers unions, school officials, and many
politicians adamantly oppose the use of public monies for innovative solutions, such as vouchers
and charter schools. Those alternatives, although not a panacea for all the present problems, are at
least promising vehicles that could help poor and middle income parents to find better schools for
their children and break up the monopoly of a one size fits all philosophy of education. One size

The Assassination of John F Kennedy
The Assassination of John F Kennedy
From source B we can learn many things about JFK s assassination. We learn that JFK was hit by 2
shots the second one killing him apparently hitting from the back, into his right temple.
Source B also stated that 3 shots were fired from the sixth floor of the Texas schoolbook
depository. The rifleman was named Lee Harvey
Oswald. Source B declares the assassination weapon to be a Mannlincher
carcano rifle. Source B written by the Warren Commission states
Oswald had no accomplices. To me this seems quite unbelievable. People who knew him in the
marines said he had a Pathetic Shot. The gun he apparently used would not be a weapon likely to
be used in an assassination attempt, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Source F doesn t really explain that Oswald acted alone. It states he was on the Fair Play for Cuba
committee and he was interested in left wing politics. Source F is meant to look like a communist
conspiracy because at the time Kennedy was thought to have won a political battle over the Cuban
missile crisis.
Study sources G, H, I and J
How useful are these sources in providing information to support the view that Lee Harvey Oswald
was not acting alone?
These sources are useful in providing information that Oswald didn t act alone in the assassination
of JFK.
Source G shows eyewitness accounts contradict the Warren report. Jean
Hill a schoolteacher said she heard 4 6 shots and there were different guns being fired, she knew
this, as she was familiar to guns. Gordon
Arnold a young soldier heard a shot come from behind him, as he was standing by grassy knoll.
Source G is unreliable, as two witnesses contradicts one another.
Bonnie Williams said he ate lunch on the sixth floor and left at
12:20, he recalls nobody being there. While watching the parade Arnold
Williams said he saw a man holding a rifle with a telescopic sight at about 12:15 (on 6th floor).
Arnold Williams statement seems suspicious as it should of alarmed him more.

  • 2. Leonid Fridman s Essay America Needs Its Nerds In his essay America Needs Its Nerds , author Leonid Fridman discusses the stigma against so called nerds and how these nerds are essential to America in keeping up with other countries. He does this providing several examples. However, this essay is ultimately weak because of the broadness of his examples, as well as the overarching strawman he creates to represent society . By relying solely on these examples, he creates a very simple one sided argument To begin the essay, Fridman states that our society is one which has only derogatory terms like nerd and geekfor the intellectually curious and academically serious (lines 2 4). As a broad statement, this holds true. However, in the context of having a living personwith a brain being the audience, this crumbles. Nerd and geek defined by Fridman... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If I recall correctly, this profession was one originating before or during the Renaissance. He claims this is telling a fact about our language and culture , despite most people probably not knowing (or caring) what the word means beforehand (One might say that not knowing or caring what nerd means is a sign of being a non intelligent non nerd, but does knowing that definition really make you smarter than/superior to anyone else?). Fridman then states that at Harvard University, an Ivy league university known for its prestigiousness, that anti intellectualism is rampant . He provides an example saying that most students are ashamed of how much they study, but his lack of concrete evidence for this example makes it seem extremely unlikely. Some may say that the unlikeliness of it adds to the essay, in the nuh uh no way! sort of way, but truthfully, it doesn t. It detracts from it by lessening his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay On Social Work Social working is an industry so vast and extensive, but be so invisible if you have never been exposed to it. Going into the social work field you have to have the value of selflessness and great charity. The fields can range from someone off a GED to someone going for their second doctorate. Wide range competitiveness, social workers first step is getting on a licensing standpoint, but in reality you need to make yourself an acceptable offering for the field of competition. Several amount of references who could can give an honest record of your aptitude. That is just the first step, entering the field. Social workis competitive, but also very populous, with a broad spectrum of practices from militaries to schools, and is prominent throughout the globe. These practices can then be broken down into even smaller categories. The medical field, there is more than enough social work in this area that can be forgotten. The emotional trauma patients suffer from all types of diseases, the casualties of war and workforce, or just burnt out workers, such as the nurses and doctors who have to care for the endless amount of patients. Each of these minor fields may take a different type of social worker. The fields are all growing, in fact the job outlook for social workers is faster than average at 12%. Use of evidence based practices is increasingly prominent in social work in the substance abuse disorders yet demonstrated effectiveness in the treatment continues to be low. Social ... • 4. Memphis Three Stereotypes The Memphis Three might have been boys, but they took their sentence like men. In Deal Frees West Memphis Three in Arkansas by Campbell Robertson; he explains how the trial played out from start to finish. What angered the media was the horrible trial, the stereotype the Memphis three went under and the closing of the case. Justice was not served for the Memphis three. It is almost impossible for justice to be served when the trail was a mess. There was a 12 hour police interrogation of Jessie Misskelley. He is intellectually disabled, causing him to give a false confession. The police should have known the psychology of false confession and shouldn t have interrogated Mr. Misskelley for 12 hours. The sentences were based on hearsay testimony of witnesses who heard the boys talk about the murders: ...the defendant had been motivated as members of a satanic cult (Robertson 4). Hearsay doesn t prove anything in the court of law. The juryis supposed to know nothing about the case; but of course one juror already had his mind set on his conviction. This juror... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This factor caused them to be the driving force of the investigation. The police reasons for them being suspicious was: they wore all black clothing, listened to heavy metal, and were teens. These claims were obviously pointless as Mecinda Smith a supporter even pointed out herself. She wore black and had long hair like Mr. Echols, there is no reports of Ms. Smith murdering any boys. People go through clothing phases and should not be mistaken as a satanic cult. Mr. Echols started ...believing he was singled out for being an outsider in a small town. (Robertson 5). When the head suspect knows he is being discriminated on just know there is something wrong. There was no evidence that the Memphis Three was a satanic cult. The police evidence against them was their appearance. There was no justice when a conviction is based on someone s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Case A Retail Dry Cleaning Shop A retail dry cleaning store cleans two piece suits for $12 each. Its patrons are individual walk ins. There are several similar dry cleaners in the city and this firm offers no special services. The firm can clean up to 1,000 suits per week. It has fixed costs of $3,500 per week (amortization on its equipment, rent, taxes, and salaries) plus a costof $4 per suit for chemicals, packaging materials, order processing, and incidentals. Volume per week has been fairly constant at 600 suits. A firm that operates three hotels in the city is asking the store to clean 150 two piece staff uniforms per week at a price of $6.75 per suit. The process would be the same as the store uses on suits. Because there are several dry cleaning stores ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Why or why not? The special job still should be accepted even if the hotel chain is only willing to pay $4.25 per uniform. As mentioned previously, the price at $4.25 is still greater than the Marginal Costat $4.00 and therefore it is still profitable for the firm to continue and make the uniform. The increase in revenue would be $637.50 ($4.25*150), whereas the increase in costs would only be $600 ($400*150). Therefore, even though the $4.25 is far below the $12.00 market price and the average total cost of $8.67, it is still a profitable order. Calculation below: =$4.25 =$4.00 =$8.67 3.Suppose the hotel chain is willing to negotiate the price. When you enter the negotiations, what is the lowest price you are willing to accept (i.e., your reservation price)? (Of course, you will not announce this price to the other party.) Since this firm is in a perfectly competitive market, they must charge the same price in the industry to be competitive. Since they have excessive capacity of up to 400 suits above their normal sales, the incremental job allows them to negotiate a price anywhere revenue is greater than the variable cost per shirt. The lowest price that the dry cleaning service should accept is the point where the Market Price=Marginal Cost =Marginal Revenue, which is $4.00 per uniform. This is only the case because the dry cleaning service has the excess capacity and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As they had announced before it was a full flight so Candice and I met a guy named Townsin and we talked the whole flight. He showed us some magic tricks and Candice tried to do one, but she failed to do so. When we landed in Omaha we said goodbye to our new friend and continued on our new adventures. We had to wait for our friend Savannah to come and pick us up at the airport and take us to the hotel where we were all staying. When we finished breakfast or when prelims were over we would go do something for the rest of the day before we had to go back for finals. My sister and I do not really like to shop, but Shelby and Nancy did so we went to a lot of stores, and let s just say there was lots of things bought. After we went shopping we went to go get some cupcakes, Shelby had been constantly eating sweets ever since she had started going to college, so she ate two giant cupcakes and all of the icing of my cupcake. When we finish our delicious cupcakes we wanted to see some more of Omaha. We walked around and there was a big lake and they had stepping stones to cross it. There were also sculptures everywhere, and everything had something to do with Omaha s history. We walked around and then returned to the hotel. Taiwan experienced a lot of disasters in recent several years, including a huge earthquake in 1999, air crash in 1998 and 2001, and many typhoons and floods every year and SARS in 2003. These incidents created demands that challenged our medical infrastructures. The emergency medical preparedness programs evolved a lot in response to medical surge in these disasters. In our system, several characteristics should be clarified in the beginning: 1.In our multiple casualty incident plans require to send hospital doctors to the incidents immediately to save lives, disregarding what they can do or if the scene is under control. • 9. Analysis Of Chaim Potok s The Chosen, Verbal... Since the beginning of time, humans have endeavored to express their thoughts to other humans. Early on, humans may have expressed their thoughts through only body language and primitive grunts; however, as civilization progressed, humans developed intelligible language. From development of that early language, written language was sprouted. From some development of that written language, other forms of communication came into being. Today, many forms of communication exist; however, all of them center around verbal communication. In Chaim Potok s critically acclaimed novel, The Chosen, verbal communication, or the lack thereof, is a main theme. The lack of communication, silence, in The Chosen is used by Potok not only to show the suffering of his characters but also to symbolize the struggles of the Jewish people. Potok uses silence prominently in The Chosen to show isolation. Both of the protagonists in the book experience an isolating silence; for example, the silence imposed upon Danny is a main component of the novel s plot. Danny s pain and isolation is caused by his father s silence toward him. Reb Saunders, Danny s father, doesn t speak with Danny because he believes that being silent toward Danny is what is best for him; however, the other characters of the book see only that the silence causes Danny suffering. Reb s silence toward Danny would seem cruel in a normal situation, but in Danny s situation, it seems to be atrocious. In the forties, being a Jew ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Who Is Better Than Stand-Up Comedy We are living in a time where it seems as if we as a people cannot agree on anything. We are living what appears to be a turbulent time in a nation that is dividing further and further apart. With all the terrible things going on in the nation we all need an escape from time to time. To me one of the best escapes form the chaos in the world is laughter. What better way to get that laughter delivered to you, than stand up comedy? Over the years I have not met many people that do not enjoy going to a comedy show. The one thing that I have found is that most people either do not know that comedy shows are going on all around them or; they will not go to a show if the person is not famous. I am not trying to say that those shows are not fun and that those comedians do not deserve to have us go watch them, they worked hard to get there. What I am saying is, that going to a comedy club setting is a much more enjoyable experience. Instead of spending an arm and a leg on a ticket. You can spend a fraction of the price and probably get friends to come along with you. It is so much better to sit at a table full of friends instead of in a row in a cramped chair next to strangers. With the money you saved, you and your friends can go out to eat before, and order more drinks at your table at the show. There is not much better than getting dressed up and going out and having a fun night with a group of loved ones. Many people are afraid of going into intimate settings for fear of being picked on by the comedians on stage. I am here to tell you, that the vast majority of comedians do not pick on the crowd. It is already hard enough to get a crowd there, why would they make them not feel comfortable. They do however, interact with the crowd making the show more inclusive. Something that you would not get at an arena or theater show, unless you buy front row tickets. The audience just becomes an amorphous mass of nothingness for me, there s no intimacy Because in terms of my material.... you should have no more than 300 people at a gig because you need to see the whites of a comedian s ... • 11. An Analysis Of The Banjo By Louis Gottschalk To recover from the storm, I select The Banjo by Louis Gottschalk as my next piece. In contrast to the fierce thunderstorm in Moonlight s third movement, Banjo is full of cheerful and light hearted melodies. As if a sunshower, the music refreshes our mind and energizes our spirit. Staccato, one of the most remarkable characteristics in this piece, brings energy to the entire music. In the subject line of the A section (this piece has a five part A B A B A form), the melody of the left hand purely consists of staccatos whose short, bouncing feature opens up a dynamic theme., This dynamic is further expressed as the piece enters B section, since the high pitched notes have more distinguishable sounds and a more rapid speed. This movement then culminates at five major chords whose high pitch and strong, sharp volume produce an extraordinarily penetrating sound. All these movements delineates a playful scene of rain dancing at every corner of the world: on a roof, a stream, an umbrella, a petal of flower, etc. By reflecting sunlight, every drop of rain looks like a shining crystal that illuminates the surroundings and illuminates our heart. Another interesting point of this piece is the use of an old music, Capetown Races. Capetown Races resembles the tune of nursery rhymes and introduces an innocent, childlike sense. In The Banjo, the main melody of the old song comes from the right hand region and are expressed through octave chords. As the main melody repeats, the notes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Common Misunderstanding about Buddhism A common misunderstanding of about Buddhism exist today, especially in the concept of reincarnation. Since the origin of Buddhism derived from India where most people practice Hinduism during that time, the common misunderstanding is that many people believes that when one passed on and reincarnate, the individual possess the same souls as the one before. This is wrong because the Buddhismdoes not believed in a permanent self in one s body. The doctrine of Buddhism is to attain enlightenment and be released from the cycle of rebirth and death, thus attaining Nirvana. Whereas, the doctrine of Hinduism was to escape the cycle of reincarnation, and attain salvation. In Buddhism, rebirth occurs as a result of ignorance in the unconscious life stream at the time of death. This term means a mind containing illusion and defilement such as frustration, greed and selfishness are among them. The unconscious life stream is considered to be endless stream of energy stretching back into the past and future. It is sometimes known as the Mind. Karma, being a powerful energy act upon the unconscious life stream and a rebirth occurs. • 15. Quebec Sovereigntists Swot Analysis This essay looks to discuss Quebec sovereigntists and federalists, and how they differ in their understandings of Canada and Quebec. To accomplish this, the paper looks at three points of contention; how to understand history, the nature of the Quebec state, and recognition of Quebec. The three points of contention show where the two view diverge and why, but the paper views these points as merely pieces of the puzzle. As such only after looking at all three points does the paper reach a conclusion about the real differences between the two views. The paper concludes that sovereigntists view Quebecas distinct enfranchised nation within the confines of Canada, and while viewing Canada as a subjugator and an enemy to Quebec. In comparison,... Do to the nature of their relationship, they see Canada as a force that undermines Quebec. The federalists may agree that Canada undermined Quebec in the past, but this does not lead them to make any decisions about the country as whole like the sovereigntists. But this does mean that both agree about the nature of Quebec`s history. Secondly, both want to move on from this history. But this is where differences arise. Federalists hold that to move on from the past, Quebec must simply forget about it and instead value progress. But to the sovereigntists it s not so simple. They view history as creating a path for Quebec`s future, a path of subjugation by Canada. As such, the sovereigntists search for a critical juncture to create a new path. They conclude is sovereignty as it naturally follows from the history of Quebec. This in turn brings us to the final comparison, the justification for sovereignty. Sovereigntists see sovereignty as following naturally from the history of Quebec, and furthermore being justified by the nature of the history. Federalists however do not. This is presumably due to the fact that they do not see history as creating a path, and as such see the future as open and free. Thus the history of Quebec causes sovereigntists to have a negative view of Canada, create a path for Quebec, and justifying sovereignty, while federalists see the past as not ... In the 1730s, there was an outbreak of many slave conspiracies in the West Indies, especially in the Bahamas and Antigua. Furthermore, many runaway slaves from South Carolina had made their way down to Florida, where Spain offered them freedom. This inspired slaves to fight for their freedom. • 18. Redemption In Henry IV By William Shakespeare Redemption often manifests itself in those who seek affirmation from those around them due to their own actions. During the 14th century, as the Christian influence continues to spread across Europe, self awareness begins to increase among the population, and with it, the need for acceptance. When acceptance paired with self awareness welds itself to the hearts of a nation, people increase the need of redemption, rather than forgiveness. Especially common in royalty, the need to prove one s worth often guides the choices made in sporadic moments. Throughout Henry IV, written by William Shakespeare, the theme of redemption weaves itself into the life of Prince Hal as he seeks approval from his father as well as from himself, to demonstrate that redemption becomes necessary in order to truly be at peace with oneself. Viewed as useless and a curse, Prince Hal ruins his princely reputation according to his father, King Henry IV. As riot and dishonor stain the brow, of the Prince, King Henry IV grows increasingly impatient with his son, even entertaining the idea that Hal not be his son (I.I). Drinking, pranks, and utter disregard for others all culminate into the average day of Prince Hal, and none of which reflect well on him, clearly. To make matters worse, the young Harry Percy, or Hotspur, continues to excel in battle, and so, by comparison, making Hal look even more undesirable. Jason?s chauvinist beliefs are put under the microscope. Jason airs his views about what all women want: If they?re (women) happy in bed, they?re happy everywhere . By comparing Medea?s pure feminism to Jason?s selfish chauvinism, Euripides brokers sympathy and support for feminism from the audience. The amount of venom produced by snakes that is available for secretion with a bite also varies between kinds of snakes, and between individuals (usually by size) of any one species (reptipage 1). • 33. Life In The Iron Mills And The Simplification Of Black... Life in the Iron Mills the Simplification of Black Suffering. Rebecca Harding Davis Life in the Iron Mills illustrates class conflict and the exploitative nature of American industrialization. It has been regarded as one of the first notable examples of American realism that portrayed the burdens of industrial factory workers. Davis uses slavery comparisons throughout the novella, this rhetoric threatens the potency of her work. Class disparities serve to isolate the impoverished from the bourgeois, this alienation exists because of class but Davis seeks to create this division by race. For example Hugh is worn down and blackened by his hard labor. This comparison becomes problematic when she equates the mill workers position with that of chattel slaves. By doing so she ignores the realities of both struggles, Davis rhetoric could lead some to believe that the plight of mill workers is even more severe than slavery. Though in reality the two only share a few similarities, factory work was far less severe than chattel slavery that lasted over two centuries. Davis used this comparison since she was able to witness the atrocities of both chattel and wage slavery during her lifetime. The use of a slavery comparison would be understood by readers since abolition was controversial at the time Iron Mills was published. Yet black suffering is only a device to describe the main subject of white mill workers, she inaccurately depicts chattel slavery and downplays ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Gross Domestic Product I.Introduction 1.Introduction and objectives The wealth and success of a country is something that theoretically is very hard to measure and quantify. However, tools called Indexes can be used to report on the past, present or future state of country. The usage for these Indexes is quite obvious: they can be used to benchmark the situation of a country compared to its peers, create historical trends in order to estimate if any improvements have been made throughout the years in multiple fields. Of course, they can also be used as political tools for the world leaders for internal purposes (linked to government policies) but also external policies as it can be a mean to determine the power that a country can have on the international level. The main Index that has been used for the past 80 years and is still used nowadays to measure the economic wealth is the Gross Domestic Product (or GDP). It is important to remember that the initial goal of these indexes (and particularly the GDP) is to measure and give a detailed report of the addition, subtraction and multiplication of certain numbers that compose a country s economy. Therefore, a measurement tool is not an end goal in itself. Nevertheless, this index became the reason for an international competition between countries to decide which one is the most able to bring this number to the maximum. This might not be an issue if the GDP was not mainly a measurement of the economic wealth of a country. During the years, new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Our heroine, if you will, seems to be a woman with normally restrained passions and a well defined sense of propriety, who finds herself in a situation that tears down her restraint and reveals the vixen within. I wonder if it was intentional that the name Calixta makes me think of Calypso the nymph from Greek mythology. If half of the sexual symbolism I found in this story was intentional, Chopin was a genius. I was quite taken with the sexual imagery of the colors mentioned: white, and red. It begins with the gusts of wind that threatened to snatch away the clothing that was outside, hence AlcГ©e grabbing the trousers, and follows as the water beat in upon the boards in driving sheets, then the rain beat upon the low, shingled roof with a force and clatter that threatened to break an entrance (Chopin 336). The language grows more telling in that just after there is mention of something threatening to break an entrance, Chopin describes Calixta s bedroom. The fact that it adjoins the room they re in is completely unnecessary, unless there s a reason for the reader to be aware of the bedroom. The story of a misanthropic bachelor who meets an emotionally frustrated wife, develops a bond, then recoils at intimacy could not be more formulaic; she even dies of sudden failure of the heart s action (114). The irony is clear the suddenness really took place four years earlier. Joyce wrote Dubliners to appeal to both a mass audience and scholars, and A Painful Case seems particularly driven to the popular reader and, with its tale of unrequited love, to female readers. James Duffy is skeptical and irritated by exactly this kind of bland, superficial writing: She asked him why did he not write out his thoughts. For what, he asked her, with careful scorn. To compete with phrasemongers, incapable of thinking consecutively for sixty seconds? To submit himself to the criticisms of an obtuse middle class which entrusted its morality to policemen and its fine arts to impresarios? (111) Joyce both launches into self criticism and evades it; by critiquing the method he employs, he demonstrates a self awareness that lifts his work beyond this middle class production. Duffy, too, practices this self awareness in conjunction with Joyce. • 43. Positive And Negative Consequences Of Repealing The Jones Act Cost Analysis: I firmly believe, repealing the jones act would certainly make American economy prosperous. In this section I will bolster my opinion by analyzing some positive and negative consequences of repealing the act in terms of cost, economic impact, and national safety. Positive Consequences of repealing Jones act: Repealing the Jones Act could benefit the American economy, as it is cheaper to build ships outside USA and hiring foreign crew Building ships in America is certainly costly affair. It could cost five times more than the shipbuilt outside USA due high labor rates. Thus, repealing the jones act, means American companies can lookout for cheaper options and buy vessels made in foreign countries at cheaper rates. Wages for foreign crews are substantially lower than American crews. American crews cost nearly 4.5 times more than foreign crews. These wages make up nearly 75 percent of the operating cost difference between the two. If foreign shippers were permitted to enter the U.S. market, American companies would be forced to compete, and lower both their wages and prices to more reasonable levels. Cost of living would be significantly cheaper in states like Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico Currently people from states like Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico have to spend a lot of money to get goods due to higher freight transportation rates imposed by the Jones act. For example, it costs about $750 to ship a 45 foot container from Los Angeles to Shanghai, but it costs $8,500 to ship the same container from Los Angeles to Honolulu. This means that it costs 11 times more money to ship something to some domestic locations than international ones. Thus, repealing jones act, the cost of living in Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico would decrease greatly as residents would not have to spend as much money to get goods, from mainland America or from a foreign nation. Economic boost for American Industries Relaxing the Jones Act would lead to an economic boost for many industries across the nation, and provide more goods at lower prices for American consumers. However, many Americans re simply unaware of the impact that the extra shipping costs of the Jones Act has on their lives, and therefore efforts to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Those alternatives, although not a panacea for all the present problems, are at least promising vehicles that could help poor and middle income parents to find better schools for their children and break up the monopoly of a one size fits all philosophy of education. One size fits all emphasizing the lack of proper placement in public schools. With lack of placement testing or entrance examinations of any sort, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

During the experiment, I placed quarters onto a single paper towel of each brand at 5 second intervals. I continued to place quarters on top of the paper towel until it tore. I repeated this process for a total of three trials per paper towel brand. After each trial, I recorded the number of quarters that the paper towel held. The results showed that Kroger was the strongest paper towel brand followed by Bounty, Sparkle, Kirkland and finally the Fry s Generic Brand. • 53. The Assassination of John F Kennedy The Assassination of John F Kennedy From source B we can learn many things about JFK s assassination. We learn that JFK was hit by 2 shots the second one killing him apparently hitting from the back, into his right temple. Source B also stated that 3 shots were fired from the sixth floor of the Texas schoolbook depository. The rifleman was named Lee Harvey Oswald. Source B declares the assassination weapon to be a Mannlincher carcano rifle. Source B written by the Warren Commission states Oswald had no accomplices. To me this seems quite unbelievable. People who knew him in the marines said he had a Pathetic Shot. The gun he apparently used would not be a weapon likely to be used in an assassination attempt, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Source F doesn t really explain that Oswald acted alone. It states he was on the Fair Play for Cuba committee and he was interested in left wing politics. Source F is meant to look like a communist conspiracy because at the time Kennedy was thought to have won a political battle over the Cuban missile crisis. Study sources G, H, I and J How useful are these sources in providing information to support the view that Lee Harvey Oswald was not acting alone? These sources are useful in providing information that Oswald didn t act alone in the assassination of JFK. Source G shows eyewitness accounts contradict the Warren report. Jean Hill a schoolteacher said she heard 4 6 shots and there were different guns being fired, she knew this, as she was familiar to guns. Gordon Arnold a young soldier heard a shot come from behind him, as he was standing by grassy knoll. Source G is unreliable, as two witnesses contradicts one another. Bonnie Williams said he ate lunch on the sixth floor and left at 12:20, he recalls nobody being there. While watching the parade Arnold Williams said he saw a man holding a rifle with a telescopic sight at about 12:15 (on 6th floor). Arnold Williams statement seems suspicious as it should of alarmed him more. Source H infers it was unlikely Oswald was a lone ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
