History of Film
Plays and dances had elements common to films scripts, sets, lighting, costumes, production,
direction, actors, audiences, storyboards, and scores. They preceded film by thousands of years. Much
terminology later used in film theory and criticism applied, such as mise en scène. Moving visual
images and sounds were not recorded for replaying as in film.
The camera obscura was pioneered by Alhazen in his Book of Optics (1021),[2][3][4] and was later
perfected near the year 1600 by Giambattista della Porta. Light is inverted through a small hole or lens
from outside, and projected onto a surface or screen, creating a projected moving image,
indistinguishable from a projected high quality film to an audience, but it is not preserved in a ... Show

After this date, the Edison company developed its own form of projector, as did various other
inventors. Some of these used different film widths and projection speeds, but after a few years the 35
mm wide Edison film, and the 16 frames per second projection speed of the Lumière Cinématographe
became standard. The other important American competitor was the American Mutoscope Biograph
Company, which used a new camera designed by Dickson after he left the Edison company. [8]
At the Chicago 1893 World s Columbian Exposition, Muybridge gave a series of lectures on the
Science of Animal Locomotion in the Zoopraxographical Hall, built specially for that purpose in the
Midway Plaisance arm of the exposition. He used his zoopraxiscope to show his moving pictures to a
paying public, making the Hall the very first commercial movie theater.[5]
William Kennedy Laurie Dickson, chief engineer with the Edison Laboratories, is credited with the
invention of a practicable form of a celluloid strip containing a sequence of images, the basis of a
method of photographing and projecting moving images.[citation needed] Celluloid blocks were
thinly sliced, then removed with heated pressure plates. After this, they were coated with a
photosensitive gelatin emulsion.[citation needed] In 1893 at the Chicago World s Fair, Thomas Edison
introduced to the public two pioneering inventions based on this innovation; the Kinetograph

Diamonds, The Embodiment Of Esteem And Romance
Diamonds, the embodiment of esteem and romance. Millions of years ago, high temperatures and
pressure in earth s mantle gave birth to a dazzling gem, a gem that would be loved and adored by
many people. It would be put on ornaments and crowns, become the center piece of many jewelry,
become the highest symbol of esteem, and even be compared to the stars. People would spend entire
paychecks, even a month s, or a year s worth of salary, on trying to acquire it. And in today s world, it
s even become the norm in expressing love. For men it s become a ritual, to invest in the biggest
diamond they can afford, and put on the person they love. Looking at these norms, you have to ask,
why is it that we love diamonds so much? Why is it that people spend thousands if not millions in
trying to procure this shiny rock? Is it because it s just human nature to love shiny things we can make
ornaments out of? Or is there another reason for our astounding love for it, a more malicious and
covert reason, one that involves a masterful marketing campaign, and human consumerism
conditioning, to create a market where there isn t one. The latter, unfortunately is more akin to reality
than you would think. And for it to all make sense one would have to look at the history of the
consumer demand of diamonds, and their usage throughout their long history.
Diamonds weren t always used as adornments or jewelry pieces and many believe, in fact since
ancient times to even the middle ages,

J. D. Salinger Influences
20th Century American novelist and short story writer, J.D. Salinger, wrote many stories, most of
which have been heavily influenced by his time spent in World War II. Arguably Salinger s most
popular novel, The Catcher in the Rye, was carried into battle with him and has distinct influences of
Salinger s experiences within it. Salinger was discharged from the army in 1945 (French xiv). and
because of his experiences in the war, books like The Catcher in the Rye and many others have a much
darker tone and plot than the stories written before his time in war. Before the war, Salinger mostly
wrote short stories that lacked fighting sequences and any type of violence. After the war, Salinger s
writing became harsher and more vicious. The first of Salinger s works to feature a combat scene was
a short story called The Magic Foxhole and it described the battle of Normandy, something that
Salinger experienced but didn t discuss in his personal life (Slawenski). Salinger spent a considerable
amount of time writing The Catcher in the Rye. The novel started out as fragments of characters
written into other short stories and novels, and over time it developed into ... Show more content on

Before he was a soldier, Salinger could only write short stories that never attracted fame. After the
war, Salinger wrote novels that became famous for their thought provoking topics and controversial
ideas (French 8). Salinger used this new voice to stir the feelings of readers. His books made the
readers think about war and violence in a different way. The author of J.D. Salinger and War described
this new way of thinking when he or she wrote We are still not willing to face the consequences of
war. They, our veterans, have no choice. (J.D. Salinger and War.). This quote shows the involuntary
effects that the soldiers endure after they serve. Though, challenging to experience, the war efforts of

Lactose Intolerance Research Paper
Lactose Intolerance is a common deficiency. Over 40 million americans suffer from Lactose
intolerance. It is the inability to digest sugars in milk and other dairy products. Lactase is an enzyme
in the small intestine, low levels can effect the ability to digest daily products. For most people,
symptoms can be harmless and easily managed. Symptoms can include nausea, abdominal
cramps, bloating, diarrhea, and sometimes vomiting. These symptoms usually occur about 30 minute
stop 2 hours after ingesting a milk product. When a milk product is ingested it usually turns the lactase
in to two simple sugars and then are sent through the blood stream to the intestine. However, when
you are lactose in tolerant your body carries out a different process.

The Fate of Women in The Birthmark Essay
The Fate of Women in The Birthmark
Wilson Sullivan in Nathaniel Hawthorne in New England Men of Letters states that Nathaniel
Hawthorne s tale, The Birthmark, depicts the efforts of a deranged scientist to obtain total perfection
in his wife by removal of a facial blemish. In this story the scientist operates on the superficial level of
the physical world, while the woman, the truly heroic woman, functions on the level of the heart and
soul, the more significant level. She it is who in her virtue provides for the reader an example to live
by, even though she loses her life in the process. This essay hopes to explore the status, role, attitude
toward women and other such issues.
Alfred Kazin in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The wife s virtue leads her onward and upward; the husband s lack thereof and inability to appreciate
virtue in his Georgiana leads him downward and downward.
Even after Aylmer has persuaded a beautiful woman to become his wife, he is not capable of loving
her properly, unselfishly, because he had devoted himself, however, too unreservedly to scientific
studies ever to be weaned from them by any second passion. The narrator seeks to justify this error or
lack in Aylmer by explaining that it was not unusual for the love of science to rival the love of woman
in its depth and absorbing energy. Already at the outset of the tale, the reader perceives that Georgiana
is going to be shortchanged in this marriage. She is exposed to the problem initially when her husband
asks whether it never occurred to you that the mark upon your cheek might be removed? Aylmer is in
quest of physical perfection in his wife; unfortunately he discounts her inner, spiritual value so clearly
manifested in her comment: ``To tell you the truth it has been so often called a charm that I was
simple enough to imagine it might be so. In using the word simple she is being honest and not
sarcastic; she is being humble and respectful of others (parents?) evaluation of herself. The reply
comes from a virtuous woman. Hawthorne himself was preoccupied with . . .the

Visual Search Experiment
A visual search experiment is a task that requires your attention to be focused on specific thing or
object. While doing this, you are actively scanning for a specific feature or object, known as a target,
while other features are around the one you re looking for, also known as a distractor. In the case of
the use of this visual search experiment, it was able to bring our attention to how long it takes us to
process information and find the specific thing that we were looking for.
The first trial included using a feature search, which had all of the distractors in blue. But, then the
second trial was Conjunctive; in that they added more shapes and colors some of them blue circles,
and even green squares. In the trial I completed, I was told that I needed to use the n key to set up for
the stimulus, and then to press the m key if the stimulus was present, or z if the stimulus was not
present. The target that I was looking to find was the green circle. I needed to record if we could find
it as quickly and as accurately as possible using the keys. There were 80 trials that I went through and
had to complete. Throughout the trial I was looking for the green circle amongst all of the other
distractors. The distractors were all the color blue but their shapes changed throughout. There was no

I eventually even began to see blue circles and green squares, but I still had to pick out the green
circle. Throughout the trial, though, there were times when the stimulus wasn t present at all or when
it was overlapping on a distractor, making it even more complicated to pick out. The Independent
Variables are the types of search that we completed (feature or conjunctive), the number of shapes in
any given trial, and the choice of whether or not the target is present. The Dependent Variable is how
long it took us to respond to the

How do I find INNOVATIVE PEOPLE for my organization? And how can

secret sauce of business success. Unfortunately, most of us know very little about what makes one
person more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Associating is like the backbone structure of DNA s double helix; four patterns of action (questioning,
observing, experimenting, and networking) wind around this backbone, helping to cultivate new
insights. And just as each person s physical DNA is unique, each individual we studied had a unique
innovator s DNA for generating breakthrough business ideas.
Imagine that you have an identical twin, endowed with the same brains and natural talents that you
have. You re both given one week to come up with a creative new business venture idea. During that
week, you come up with ideas alone in your room. In contrast, your twin (1) talks with 10 people
including an engineer, a musician, a stayat home dad, and a designer about the venture,
(2) visits three innovative start ups to observe what they do, (3) samples five new to the market
products, (4) shows a prototype he s built to five people, and (5) asks the questions What if I tried
this? and
Why do you do that? at least 10 times each day during these networking, observing, and
experimenting activities. Who do you bet will come up with the more innovative (and doable) idea?

The Exploitation Of Land Is Justified Essay
The economy today runs on an antiquated ritual of exploiting, plundering, devastation, and
manipulation of land for material wealth, profiting the wealthy and condemning the poor. This
mindset is no more sophisticated than feudalism, a system so bad it had to be outlawed along with
witchcraft. The idea that exploitation of land is justified has brought plastics to the ocean and leveled
rainforests. Large corporations have grown larger by manufacturing and production, depleting the
planet s resources in the process. Now, companies must make a combined effort to put the
environment first, before profit. Because of their harmful practices, consumers have the right to know
where products come from, how they re made, and the impact on the environment. Furthermore, it is
the responsibility of the large corporations to change their harmful practices, to make strides towards
ending climate change and use clean, sustainable methods.
With the combination of polymers that don t biodegrade and mass overproduction, companies are
harming the environment in severe ways. Plastic, a material seen everywhere, is a polymer made from
oil. It is mass produced to make everything from shampoo bottles to automobiles and does not
biodegrade. When it is eventually thrown out, the waste usually finds it way into the ocean, where it is
either buried under sediment or eaten by marine life (Weisman 287 295). Creating a material that will
ultimately kill marine life will undoubtedly wreak havoc on the

Bao Qin s Wild Swans
Throughout the last month of this class, we have had the privilege to read the book titled, Wild Swans
by Jung Chang. To the extent of the required readings of the book, I have analyzed the context and
have become aware that this piece of work was about much more than what life was like throughout
China and Japan between 1909 1949. This book specifically, was about the lives of Yu fang and Bao
Qin. Both of these characters have been influenced by their culture and surroundings in some way. For
the purpose of this essay, I will be discussing why Bao Qin, formally known as Wild Swan, preferred
the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to the Kuomintang (KMT) based solely off of her experiences,

The And Sexual Graffiti And Erotic Art
The information about brothels in Pompeii is much disputed. There is only one location, now called
the Lupanar or Purpose Built Brothel, which has been conclusively identified as a brothel. Accepted
indications of ancient brothels include sexual graffiti, erotic art, and small rooms with stone beds.
These indicators are found in more than 35 sites around Pompeii. Further research of these sites
reveals that many were actually bars, inns, and baths, as well as stalls on the street that could easily
have been shelters for the poor. Many historians hypothesize that sex was in fact sold in these places,
but since that was not their primary business, it is difficult to know for certain whether these places
were used for prostitution, and nearly impossible to identify them as brothels. As the only known
brothel, the Lupanar has been analyzed extensively. The graffiti and erotic art provide a uniquely non
elite view of prostitution and its relation to social status in the ancient Roman world. The Lupanar is
located just behind the Suburban Baths (VII, 12, 18 20), about two blocks east of the forum (Beard
237; Levin Richardson 2004). The area surrounding it seems to be rich with possibilities for
prostitution, including two small cell like rooms, or cellae meritriciae, a large hotel, a tavern, and the
nearby Stabian Baths, but it appears to be the only purpose built brothel in town (McGinn 15). The
Lupanar is especially conspicuous for its alleyway entrance. There are two

Ethics In Nursing Essay
Ethics in Nursing: Regarding the Importance of Patient Priority
Carlie Cupp

Ethics in Nursing: Regarding the Importance of Patient Priority In order to create a morally and
ethically sound practice and health care environment for every patient, the nurse s decision making
role is vital and should be treated as such. The nurse s professional morals and ethics should always be
patient oriented to consistently assure the best decisions are being made to support each and every
individual appropriately. These morals and ethics should consist of, the willingness to take action on
behalf of patient needs and interests, the ability to advocate for the patients care even if that means
questioning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Other errors like this will continue to happen in situations of wrongful ethically based decision making
if the error process is not ceased. Once again, for a nurse to be able to weigh the outside forces that
influence decisions and ethically measure their value patient priority must be applied. In expansion of
patient priority, a nurse should practice this idea by specifically practicing good communication skills
to everyone involved in the patients care at all times. This includes effectively communicating with
the patient, the patient s family, other nurses, and the physician in charge of their care. By doing so,
one is best performing patient advocacy and avoiding error. Also, the nurse should be aware of the
care team s actions and how they affect the patient and be willing to speak up when a mistake may be
occurring. Such as, if a doctor writes a wrong prescription or if a nurse doesn t correctly assess vitals,
it is important for that nurse to appropriately advise her team members of their actions when it
involves the patient. While evaluating personal beliefs and values, one must understand how this is
incorporated into ethics of nursing. According to Mendes (2015), Ethical dilemmas are not uncommon
in health care. Awareness of personal beliefs, how they affect work situations and how they may
potentially affect the way a nurse views a patient, or the patient s condition and care, is

A Comparison Between Film Versions of Emma and Clueless Essay
A Comparison Between Film Versions of Emma and Clueless
The features I will look for in both films for comparison is setting, location, lighting, costumes, props,
camera angles, dialogue and weather. Emma is set in the early 20th century and Clueless in the 1990 s.
The director changed the era to refer to the fact that girls nowadays are more mature than young
women in the early 20th century.
The diversity between the locations in both films is very minor. In Clueless it is set in Beverly Hills in
America and in Emma is set in England. England in the early 20th century is largely countryside with
prosperous houses, and a rigid hierarchy. Beverly Hills is quite comparable to England as it is rich ...

This is also a casual place where the teenagers of this film hang out. Settings from both films imply
wealth and that both characters are spoilt.
The lighting in the film Emma is dull in the interior setting this gives a romantic atmosphere, and
makes her look as if she has a smooth complexion, as the main light source are candles, which are
subtle and did not show blemishes like modern lighting does. These added to her beauty and enact
desirability to men. Other means of light in the interior settings are also subtle as there is no
electricity; light sources are windows, and fireplaces. They also used rich colours in their furnishing
that increased the darkness of the film. But in the exterior settings the lighting is brighter, but this is
natural and subtle lighting, for example the weather. The director does this to create the scenes to look
natural. There is a great contrast between Emma and Clueless as technology has improved and we no
longer have to live in darkness. So there is extra lighting in Clueless indoors. Also because Cher s
house is modern it has neutral colours that repeal a lot of light and makes the rooms look bigger,
unlike Emma. Out doors, like Emma, is bright and natural and is often sunny. The darker setting is in
the party. The darker light gives off a more alluring side of you, which you would want in a party, as
in the intimate settings in Emma.

Reasons for World War I
World War 1 Essay rewrite There has been many wars since the dawn of man however very few of
these wars are as horrific and bloodcurdling as the war in which we call World War 1. The event that
started this war was the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, who was killed by a group called the Black
Hand, who was supported by Serbia. This caused countries to take sides and alliance s to form. Before
this war people saw honor in fighting, however the soldiers who returned had a different story to tell.
The three core things that played a major part in this war would have to be militarism and the
countries that were forced to choose sides and form alliances, imperialism.
Militarism played a significant part of the war especially in the German empire as well as a few other
countries. For example the German empire taught there kids combat strategies and officer training
from the time when they could read and write. The year before the year of the war began the German
empire and France nearly doubled their armies in size knowing that tensions were growing high and
war was soon to follow. Germany s advanced in industrialization made them a really tough opponent,
especially for the less developed countries such as Russia. The German empire also had the most
railroads in their country enabling them to easily transport weapons, materials, and people across their
country with ease. During the war the German empire, probably had the toughest fight, having to take

Chapter Guide for Twilight of Atheism
Justin Segovia
Fr. Denniston
Faith and Critical Reasoning
Chapter 1
The French Revolution was one of the first instances were the ideas of atheism were made public.
The Revolution led many of the clergy to be expelled from the state or killed.
After the Fall of Berlin Wall, atheism declined in popularity.
Russian Revolution continued what French Revolution started. People began to speak of atheism
outside of their own homes.
The classical version of atheism is vastly different than the atheism that is known today.
Some consider modern atheism as one of the greatest achievements of human intellect.
Immortalization in Greek myths meant infinite extension of existence, not the infinite projection of

A.C. Swinburne was more avant garde and aggressive in his approach to spreading atheism. He
visualized god as a birch wielding tyrant that oppresses humanity.
Swineburne believed that only the rejection of God would open the way to human self fulfillment.
By the middle of the Nineteenth Century Jesus was seen as a moral sage, or as a role model.
George Tyrrell was appalled that Jesus was seen as less captivating, but conceded that the Christ was a
pale reflection of his biblical self.
Chapter 6
Dostoyevsky was a Russian novelist that wrote on a fictional Russia that turned to atheism to solve its
problems.
While he showed attractive of that choice, he also presented some of its more troubling features.
His criticisms were directed more toward the world God supposedly created, more than critiquing God
himself.
Nietzsche emphasized that the belief in the Christian God became unbelievable.
Nietzsche admits that the realization that God is dead will travel slowly because it is just too
unthinkable .
For nihilism, a religious worldview is oppressive because it insists that we will be held accountable for
our actions.
In a nihilistic view, there are no sins, because nothing matters in the end.
Albert Camus argued that human life is rendered meaningless by death, which prevents the individual
from making sense of existence.

Synthesis Essay On Cyberbullying
Cyberbullying Cyberbullying is a willful and repeated harm inflicted through the use of computers,
cell phones, and other electronic devices (Source 3). Things such as posting embarrassing pictures of
someone online, or pretending to be another person online. 20% of youth ages 11 18 have been a

normal bullying. Low self esteem, depression, eating disorders, and even suicide can be provoked by
cyberbullying. So, if we want teens to stop harassing each other online, we should prosecute
individuals for their hateful statements and actions on the internet. Prosecuting these individuals is

Doodle born with a medical condition but through not giving up, being brave, working hard, he was
able to overcome some challenges. Only, to be pushed too far to death by his older brother who did
not want to pull his brother in a wagon.
With a family already preparing to bury this little baby boy in a coffin before he would see three
months Doodle has other ideas of when his life will come to an end. Wanting nothing else in the world
the narrator wanted a brother who was just as athletically capable as him, only with great fight would
that be possible. Everyone from the family knew that he would never be all straight in the head.
However, one afternoon as I watched him him, my head poked between the iron post of the foot of the
bed, he looked straight at me, and grinned. I skipped through the rooms, down the echoing halls,
shouting, Mama, he smiled. He s all there! He s all there! and he was. Doodle was given the adversity
of this heart condition but he had proved everyone wrong once and he would definitely do it several
more times and continue to fight for a better life. Trembling, he d push himself up, turning first red,
then a soft purple, and finally collapse back onto the bed like a an old worn out doll. Doodle did not
give up easily he wanted better for his life, just like his brother had wished for. Doodle may have been
born invalid at birth, but he sure wasn t going to stay that way. Doodle prevailed during his time he
also was a fighter and battled to get stronger and better with his older brothers help.
Not wanting to be pulled down by a wagon on the daily from pulling Doodle his brother set out to
help him learn to walk after showing Doodle the casket that was made for him when he was just a
baby. Teaching him to walk this would not be a easy process since he could only barely crawl. Doodle
would need to gather all the muscle he could and work very hard to accomplish being able to walk.
Working daily down in Horsehead Landing through the tough days they were able to get Doodles
strength to

Animal Intelligence Essay
Animal Intelligence
Intelligence is defined as the ability to acquire and apply knowledge. Psychologists have exploited this
concept in many ways to try and determine whether non human animals are capable of intelligence.
From social learning it is logical to assume that, since non human animals are able to both acquire and
use new behaviours, they must be intelligent in some way. Heyes stated that there are 6 types of
behaviour which suggest intelligence. These are imitation, self recognition, social relationship
formation, role taking, deception and perspective taking. These 6 behaviours are referred to as the
theory of mind (ToM).
Imitation is the ability to copy another s behaviour, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This gives a good basis to ToM as intelligence is required to recognise that the mirror image is not
another individual. This behaviour has been reported in the higher primates.
Gallup s study required chimpanzees to be placed in a cage with a mirror. At first they reacted like the
image was another chimp, but later realised that it was actually themselves. Gallup anaesthetised the
chimpanzees then placed a red mark on one eyebrow and ear. After recovering, the chimpanzees
would often touch the red mark, when they looked in the mirror. This supports the idea that higher
primates are capable of self recognition. This experiment was tried out on other animals e.g. cats,
dogs, and elephants with unsuccessful results.
The fact that no other animals responded to this experiment means that it cannot be said for sure that
all non human animals are capable of self recognition. Therefore some non human animals do not
show signs of ToM. Evolutionary science suggests that the higher primates are distant relatives of
human beings, having similar physiology may mean that higher primates are more capable of
intelligence.
Social relationships refer to an animal s ability to form bonds with others of its species. This
relationship formation may be affected by the animal s status or role in the community. In

The Hepatitis C Virus
Acute viral hepatitis is the most common form of infectious hepatitis. There are five distinct viruses
types A, B, C, D, and E. Diagnostic markers of viral hepatitis include elevation of aspartate
aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, gammaglutamyl transferase, white blood cell count, and
prothrombin time.
Hepatitis C is an infectious disease that primarily affects the liver, caused by the Hepatitis C virus
(HCV).
The cause of HCV, is a spherical, enveloped, single stranded RNA virus belonging to the Flaviviridae
family and Flavivirus genus. The natural targets of HCV are hepatocytes and, possibly, B
lymphocytes. Lauer and Walker reported that HCV is closely related to hepatitis G. HCV can produce
at least 10 trillion new viral particles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lichen Planus
Lichen Planus (LP) is a chronic inflammatory cutaneous disease that frequently involves oral mucosa.
Common symptoms are oral pain or a burning sensation, especially with acidic or spicy foods.
Symptoms are often irrespective of the clinical presentation. There is evidence of an association
between HCV and Oral Lichen Planus (OLP); however, this varies by region and further studies are
needed to fully confirm the relationship.
Diagnosis of OLP should involve a referral to a trained clinician in oral medicine or maxillofacial
surgery. The principles behind treatment of OLP are symptom management, immune modulation,
monitoring and education. Treatment of OLP is usually reserved for disease that is symptomatic.
Topical corticosteroids are normally the main choice of treatment for OLP.

Should English Be The Official Language
Everyone knows English is the hardest language to learn. Then why learn the language? Maybe
because they have not really thought of the bonuses to learning English. English should be the official
language of the United States because it encourages foreign countries to learn English, the US
economy saves money, and the English language will unite all around Americans around a common
language. Encourages foreign countries to learn our language. A study is shown in 2014 that bout 3/4s
of schools found in Germany teach Englisch. Schools found in china about 63% of those schools
know English. Comparable studies found in other schools all over the world found similar results.
Other ways foreign countries can learn English is having it be required

(PTSD) is classified as an anxiety disorder that can develop after an individual has observed and/or
experienced an extreme traumatic event that involved actual or threatened death or serious injury to
one s self or another (APA, 2000). An extreme traumatic event can include, but is not limited to,
military combat, terrorist attacks, natural or manmade disasters, sexual assault, physical assault,
robbery, and torture (APA, 2000). The type of traumatic event could influence the way in which

The purpose of psychoeducation is to legitimize the traumatic reaction, to help the client develop a
formulation of her or his symptoms, and to establish a justification for treatment (Harvey, Bryant,
Tarrier, 2003). Prolonged Exposure and/or In Vivo Exposure Prolonged exposure requires that the
client repeatedly, in a systematic manner, relive the memories of the traumatic event over an extended
period of time (Foa, Dancu, Hembree, Jaycox, Meadows, Street, 1999; Foa Rauch, 2004; Harvey,
Bryant, Tarrier, 2003). In prolonged exposure, the client is expected to (a) vividly call to mind the
traumatic event, with as much detail as possible, (b) recount the memory of the traumatic event to the
therapist in the present tense, and (c) have constant exposure to the memory until the distress
decreases (McDonagh, McHugo, Sengupta, Demment, Schnurr, Friendman, Ford, Mueser, Fournier,
Descamps, 2005). The therapist s role, in prolonged exposure, is to help the client identify hot spots or
the most distressing aspect of the memory. The therapist and the client then develop a hierarchy of
memories to address, from least to most distressing. These memories are addressed one at a time until
habituation of anxiety to the memory occurs, which is determined by

Negative Stereotypes In Society
Stereotypes are assumptions or generalizations that people think and label a particular person as
belonging to a group based on how they look in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, and other categories.
Stereotypes are a big problem in our society because they have a negative impact and can be
damaging to a person s emotions. Thus, any stereotype on individuals can be viewed as wrong
because in the end we are judging them. I was stereotyped as a thief because some people assumed I
was stealing. As a result, I was affected by this because if they stopped to see what I was actually
doing, they would have seen I was buying a box to give someone a present.
Stereotypes are one of the most terrible mistakes that many people have because their critique. Most
people, even young or old, were grouped with either positive or negative stereotypes; which actually
do not fit for everyone. Some Vietnamese people mainly immigrants, international students, or tourists
are criticized dishonesty and greed. It might be so wrong to use that identify into any specific
situation. In reality, I was stereotyped on that category at the day I went to the Daiso store to find a gift
box for my friend s present. I tried to estimate how big the box should I buy, so I put sandals that I just
bought from H M store into many different boxes. Finally, I chose a hard box which is covered by
pink flower paper. At that time two Japanese ladies, who walked across the box aisle, they suddenly

Force Generator Critical Capabilities
A crucial enabler (Joint Chiefs of Staff, 2011, pp. III 24) or force generator, critical capabilities (CC)
are the inherent functions, activities or events that allow a center of gravity to achieve its specified or
implied objectives. Using the Ends Ways Means Risk framework, critical capabilities represent the
Ways (i.e. methods, tactics or strategies) in which a COG will accomplish its mission. Stated more
simply, a CC is something a center of gravity [can] do to you that puts great fear (or concern) into
your heart in the context of your mission and level of war (Strange Iron, 2013, p. 7). When identifying
critical capabilities its important keep two key points in mind. First, correctly identifying the condition
or set of conditions an adversary will use to define operational success, their end state, is the all
important first step in identifying critical capabilities. Doing so allows policy makers to narrow their
focus and more accurately identify and define the critical capabilities a COG must possess to achieve
the desired end state. Simply stated, you have to know where they are going before you can determine
how they re getting there. Second, when deciding on critical capabilities it s ... Show more content on

CR s must be used or applied by a COG to achieve a CC. If we use the examples cited earlier it
becomes clear that, by themselves, ammo, fuel and tanks are not capable of seizing an objective.
However, if you combine the three, they can be subsequently used by a COG to seize an objective or
destroy an opposing force. This is an important distinction to make because some CR s are inherently
powerful (i.e. a tank) and can be confused as a source of power when, in fact, the source of power is
the entity using the CR (i.e. an armored division using the tank). Figure 3 (p. 8), illustrates how critical
requirements enable critical

Questions On Juvenile And Juvenile Justice System
1. I d recommend you begin your paper with a paragraph that states both your theory and your
approach. Share that the juvenile justice system should take into account the evidence that a juvenile s
brain specifically the white matter that controls the brain s executive functions has not completely
formed. You will layout the biological evidence for this and then through the use of a recent case show
the gaps in the current court system as well as make recommendations for how to address youth in the
juvenile system in a more effective manner. 2. Great use of Jacob s case study. I d state directly that
you will explore this topic with a recent case in mind. I wonder if there s another source to Jacob s
case...ie Psychology Today or even better a peer reviewed source. But no worries, if not. Juvenile
brain development studies show conclusively that our brains are not fully developed until we reach the
age of 25. Should we or can we take this into account in the juvenile justice system? Juvenile brain
development studies have conclusively shown that our brains are not fully developed until we reach
the age of 25. Research has shown that the white matter in the brain, which controls insights,
judgment, self awareness and empathy, is one of the last parts to fully mature. This lack of fully
developed executive functions should be taken into account in the juvenile justice system. Jacob Ind,
as any child, deserved the love and protection of his parents.

Hungry for Worship, authors Frank Page and L. Gray write about the hunger for worshipping God that
all leaders should possess. In chapter 1, both authors begin the text with the concept of how the body
has fallen in love with the method of worship and not the actual act of being in the Presence of God.

They give examples from C.S. Lewis when discussing this subject. They quote Lewis with the term
Chronological snobbery . This term means that while older generations only find value in the
traditions and heritage of our faith, the younger generations only find relevance in what is current.
They also write this type of separation between the young and old has effectively begun dismembering
the body of Christ limb by limb. The authors also put focus on the act of individual preferences
through church shopping. This according to Page and Gray, result in the encouraging of churches to
offer consumer driven programming in order to keep members on their rolls. They give scripture
which identifies the importance of unity. Ephesians 4:14 16 shows how the body of Christ should be
unified in the midst of diversity. Leaders should work extra hard to keep the church family
worshipping together. The authors condemn chronological snobbery and suggest that both the young
and old come together. The young generation must grow up and the older generation needs to adapt.
Analysis: The authors point out a huge problem that is alive and well in the church. Due to personal
preferences, the church has separated itself from one another. Not only are different cultures separate
but the age differences within the church are separated amongst themselves. The leaders of worship
within the church whether they are pastors or worship band leaders must not

Learning About Other Religions, People s Sexual...
As we come to the end of the term looking back at the previous diversity summaries I find that this
one in particular gave me more of an encouragement to think beyond what I already knew or didn t
know about religion, people s sexual orientation and disabilities. From my personal experience and
knowledge of other religions I was not expecting to see some that I have never even heard of before,
or how much a person s sexual orientation can have impacts on their lives. As for disabilities, I have a
brother who has a disability but it was a great learning experience, even with a short presentation on
people with other disabilities, to grasp a deeper recognition of what it means to be a disabled person in
the United States. Moving forward, I hope to summarize the presentations presented to the class on the
final diversity topics and include my insight on them as well. For this diversity topic, learning about
other religions should make us aware of the various world religions that exist. For us, these
presentation summaries give way to how each person interviewed is affected either by other in their
workplace or by society. We have five total presentations we can further our understanding for
different religions that we may have never thought of in the aspect of diversity and discrimination.

old college student who is of Hmong religion. He wishes others would know about his

How Does Shakespeare Present Commitment In Romeo And Juliet
Examine Shakespeare s presentation of commitment within a love relationship in Romeo and Juliet.
William Shakespeare wrote over 400 plays during his life during the Elizabethan era, of which one of
his more famous plays is Romeo and Juliet. People from all classes went to watch his plays at the
Globe theatre where seating was available to suit the various classes. His plays examined several
issues that occurred to Elizabethan society, at a time when loyalty, religion and family were
paramount. This essay will be looking at the theme of commitment and how it was portrayed.
Shakespeare shows the theme of commitment in the play Romeo and Juliet by demonstrating
commitment to one another within a love relationship. This was demonstrated within the lines If thou
dost love me, pronounce it faithfully which is followed later in that dialogue with Lady by blessed
moon I swear. This shows commitment by swearing at the moon of their love, which is an example of
pathetic fallacy due to the fact that this scene occurs at night. This is pathetic fallacy as the
relationship is secretive which has connotations of darkness / night. The word moon can have several
meanings in this context. The first meaning moon can have is of one where it provides light in the
darkness which as previously discussed may be referring to the secrecy of their relationship. A second
meaning is that the darkness represents the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets; whilst the
moon is representing

  • 3. History of Film Plays and dances had elements common to films scripts, sets, lighting, costumes, production, direction, actors, audiences, storyboards, and scores. They preceded film by thousands of years. Much terminology later used in film theory and criticism applied, such as mise en scène. Moving visual images and sounds were not recorded for replaying as in film. The camera obscura was pioneered by Alhazen in his Book of Optics (1021),[2][3][4] and was later perfected near the year 1600 by Giambattista della Porta. Light is inverted through a small hole or lens from outside, and projected onto a surface or screen, creating a projected moving image, indistinguishable from a projected high quality film to an audience, but it is not preserved in a ... Some of these used different film widths and projection speeds, but after a few years the 35 mm wide Edison film, and the 16 frames per second projection speed of the Lumière Cinématographe became standard. The other important American competitor was the American Mutoscope Biograph Company, which used a new camera designed by Dickson after he left the Edison company. [8] At the Chicago 1893 World s Columbian Exposition, Muybridge gave a series of lectures on the Science of Animal Locomotion in the Zoopraxographical Hall, built specially for that purpose in the Midway Plaisance arm of the exposition. He used his zoopraxiscope to show his moving pictures to a paying public, making the Hall the very first commercial movie theater.[5] William Kennedy Laurie Dickson, chief engineer with the Edison Laboratories, is credited with the invention of a practicable form of a celluloid strip containing a sequence of images, the basis of a method of photographing and projecting moving images.[citation needed] Celluloid blocks were thinly sliced, then removed with heated pressure plates. After this, they were coated with a photosensitive gelatin emulsion.[citation needed] In 1893 at the Chicago World s Fair, Thomas Edison introduced to the public two pioneering inventions based on this innovation; the Kinetograph ... • 4. Diamonds, The Embodiment Of Esteem And Romance Diamonds, the embodiment of esteem and romance. Millions of years ago, high temperatures and pressure in earth s mantle gave birth to a dazzling gem, a gem that would be loved and adored by many people. It would be put on ornaments and crowns, become the center piece of many jewelry, become the highest symbol of esteem, and even be compared to the stars. People would spend entire paychecks, even a month s, or a year s worth of salary, on trying to acquire it. And in today s world, it s even become the norm in expressing love. For men it s become a ritual, to invest in the biggest diamond they can afford, and put on the person they love. Looking at these norms, you have to ask, why is it that we love diamonds so much? Why is it that people spend thousands if not millions in trying to procure this shiny rock? Is it because it s just human nature to love shiny things we can make ornaments out of? Or is there another reason for our astounding love for it, a more malicious and covert reason, one that involves a masterful marketing campaign, and human consumerism conditioning, to create a market where there isn t one. The latter, unfortunately is more akin to reality than you would think. And for it to all make sense one would have to look at the history of the consumer demand of diamonds, and their usage throughout their long history. Diamonds weren t always used as adornments or jewelry pieces and many believe, in fact since ancient times to even the middle ages, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. J. D. Salinger Influences 20th Century American novelist and short story writer, J.D. Salinger, wrote many stories, most of which have been heavily influenced by his time spent in World War II. Arguably Salinger s most popular novel, The Catcher in the Rye, was carried into battle with him and has distinct influences of Salinger s experiences within it. Salinger was discharged from the army in 1945 (French xiv). and because of his experiences in the war, books like The Catcher in the Rye and many others have a much darker tone and plot than the stories written before his time in war. Before the war, Salinger mostly wrote short stories that lacked fighting sequences and any type of violence. After the war, Salinger s writing became harsher and more vicious. The first of Salinger s works to feature a combat scene was a short story called The Magic Foxhole and it described the battle of Normandy, something that Salinger experienced but didn t discuss in his personal life (Slawenski). Salinger spent a considerable amount of time writing The Catcher in the Rye. The novel started out as fragments of characters written into other short stories and novels, and over time it developed into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before he was a soldier, Salinger could only write short stories that never attracted fame. After the war, Salinger wrote novels that became famous for their thought provoking topics and controversial ideas (French 8). Salinger used this new voice to stir the feelings of readers. His books made the readers think about war and violence in a different way. The author of J.D. Salinger and War described this new way of thinking when he or she wrote We are still not willing to face the consequences of war. They, our veterans, have no choice. (J.D. Salinger and War.). This quote shows the involuntary effects that the soldiers endure after they serve. Though, challenging to experience, the war efforts of J.D. Salinger greatly impacted his writing for the ... The Fate of Women in The Birthmark Essay The Fate of Women in The Birthmark Wilson Sullivan in Nathaniel Hawthorne in New England Men of Letters states that Nathaniel Hawthorne s tale, The Birthmark, depicts the efforts of a deranged scientist to obtain total perfection in his wife by removal of a facial blemish. In this story the scientist operates on the superficial level of the physical world, while the woman, the truly heroic woman, functions on the level of the heart and soul, the more significant level. She it is who in her virtue provides for the reader an example to live by, even though she loses her life in the process. The wife s virtue leads her onward and upward; the husband s lack thereof and inability to appreciate virtue in his Georgiana leads him downward and downward. Even after Aylmer has persuaded a beautiful woman to become his wife, he is not capable of loving her properly, unselfishly, because he had devoted himself, however, too unreservedly to scientific studies ever to be weaned from them by any second passion. The narrator seeks to justify this error or lack in Aylmer by explaining that it was not unusual for the love of science to rival the love of woman in its depth and absorbing energy. Already at the outset of the tale, the reader perceives that Georgiana is going to be shortchanged in this marriage. She is exposed to the problem initially when her husband asks whether it never occurred to you that the mark upon your cheek might be removed? Aylmer is in quest of physical perfection in his wife; unfortunately he discounts her inner, spiritual value so clearly manifested in her comment: ``To tell you the truth it has been so often called a charm that I was simple enough to imagine it might be so. While doing this, you are actively scanning for a specific feature or object, known as a target, while other features are around the one you re looking for, also known as a distractor. In the case of the use of this visual search experiment, it was able to bring our attention to how long it takes us to process information and find the specific thing that we were looking for. The first trial included using a feature search, which had all of the distractors in blue. But, then the second trial was Conjunctive; in that they added more shapes and colors some of them blue circles, and even green squares. In the trial I completed, I was told that I needed to use the n key to set up for the stimulus, and then to press the m key if the stimulus was present, or z if the stimulus was not present. The target that I was looking to find was the green circle. I needed to record if we could find it as quickly and as accurately as possible using the keys. Imagine that you have an identical twin, endowed with the same brains and natural talents that you have. You re both given one week to come up with a creative new business venture idea. During that week, you come up with ideas alone in your room. The Exploitation Of Land Is Justified Essay The economy today runs on an antiquated ritual of exploiting, plundering, devastation, and manipulation of land for material wealth, profiting the wealthy and condemning the poor. This mindset is no more sophisticated than feudalism, a system so bad it had to be outlawed along with witchcraft. The idea that exploitation of land is justified has brought plastics to the ocean and leveled rainforests. Large corporations have grown larger by manufacturing and production, depleting the planet s resources in the process. Now, companies must make a combined effort to put the environment first, before profit. Because of their harmful practices, consumers have the right to know where products come from, how they re made, and the impact on the environment. Furthermore, it is the responsibility of the large corporations to change their harmful practices, to make strides towards ending climate change and use clean, sustainable methods. With the combination of polymers that don t biodegrade and mass overproduction, companies are harming the environment in severe ways. Plastic, a material seen everywhere, is a polymer made from oil. It is mass produced to make everything from shampoo bottles to automobiles and does not biodegrade. When it is eventually thrown out, the waste usually finds it way into the ocean, where it is either buried under sediment or eaten by marine life (Weisman 287 295). Creating a material that will ultimately kill marine life will undoubtedly wreak havoc on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To the extent of the required readings of the book, I have analyzed the context and have become aware that this piece of work was about much more than what life was like throughout China and Japan between 1909 1949. This book specifically, was about the lives of Yu fang and Bao Qin. Both of these characters have been influenced by their culture and surroundings in some way. For the purpose of this essay, I will be discussing why Bao Qin, formally known as Wild Swan, preferred the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to the Kuomintang (KMT) based solely off of her experiences, while also comparing and contrasting her choice to her ... • 13. The And Sexual Graffiti And Erotic Art The information about brothels in Pompeii is much disputed. There is only one location, now called the Lupanar or Purpose Built Brothel, which has been conclusively identified as a brothel. Accepted indications of ancient brothels include sexual graffiti, erotic art, and small rooms with stone beds. These indicators are found in more than 35 sites around Pompeii. Further research of these sites reveals that many were actually bars, inns, and baths, as well as stalls on the street that could easily have been shelters for the poor. Many historians hypothesize that sex was in fact sold in these places, but since that was not their primary business, it is difficult to know for certain whether these places were used for prostitution, and nearly impossible to identify them as brothels. As the only known brothel, the Lupanar has been analyzed extensively. The graffiti and erotic art provide a uniquely non elite view of prostitution and its relation to social status in the ancient Roman world. The Lupanar is located just behind the Suburban Baths (VII, 12, 18 20), about two blocks east of the forum (Beard 237; Levin Richardson 2004). The area surrounding it seems to be rich with possibilities for prostitution, including two small cell like rooms, or cellae meritriciae, a large hotel, a tavern, and the nearby Stabian Baths, but it appears to be the only purpose built brothel in town (McGinn 15). Ethics In Nursing Essay Ethics in Nursing: Regarding the Importance of Patient Priority Carlie Cupp Indiana University East Ethics in Nursing: Regarding the Importance of Patient Priority In order to create a morally and ethically sound practice and health care environment for every patient, the nurse s decision making role is vital and should be treated as such. The nurse s professional morals and ethics should always be patient oriented to consistently assure the best decisions are being made to support each and every individual appropriately. Once again, for a nurse to be able to weigh the outside forces that influence decisions and ethically measure their value patient priority must be applied. In expansion of patient priority, a nurse should practice this idea by specifically practicing good communication skills to everyone involved in the patients care at all times. This includes effectively communicating with the patient, the patient s family, other nurses, and the physician in charge of their care. By doing so, one is best performing patient advocacy and avoiding error. Also, the nurse should be aware of the care team s actions and how they affect the patient and be willing to speak up when a mistake may be occurring. Such as, if a doctor writes a wrong prescription or if a nurse doesn t correctly assess vitals, it is important for that nurse to appropriately advise her team members of their actions when it involves the patient. While evaluating personal beliefs and values, one must understand how this is incorporated into ethics of nursing. According to Mendes (2015), Ethical dilemmas are not uncommon in health care. Reasons for World War I World War 1 Essay rewrite There has been many wars since the dawn of man however very few of these wars are as horrific and bloodcurdling as the war in which we call World War 1. The event that started this war was the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, who was killed by a group called the Black Hand, who was supported by Serbia. This caused countries to take sides and alliance s to form. Before this war people saw honor in fighting, however the soldiers who returned had a different story to tell. The three core things that played a major part in this war would have to be militarism and the countries that were forced to choose sides and form alliances, imperialism. Militarism played a significant part of the war especially in the German empire as well as a few other countries. For example the German empire taught there kids combat strategies and officer training from the time when they could read and write. The year before the year of the war began the German empire and France nearly doubled their armies in size knowing that tensions were growing high and war was soon to follow. Psychologists have exploited this concept in many ways to try and determine whether non human animals are capable of intelligence. From social learning it is logical to assume that, since non human animals are able to both acquire and use new behaviours, they must be intelligent in some way. Heyes stated that there are 6 types of behaviour which suggest intelligence. These are imitation, self recognition, social relationship formation, role taking, deception and perspective taking. These 6 behaviours are referred to as the theory of mind (ToM). Imitation is the ability to copy another s behaviour, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This gives a good basis to ToM as intelligence is required to recognise that the mirror image is not another individual. This behaviour has been reported in the higher primates. Gallup s study required chimpanzees to be placed in a cage with a mirror. At first they reacted like the image was another chimp, but later realised that it was actually themselves. Gallup anaesthetised the chimpanzees then placed a red mark on one eyebrow and ear. After recovering, the chimpanzees would often touch the red mark, when they looked in the mirror. This supports the idea that higher primates are capable of self recognition. This experiment was tried out on other animals e.g. cats, dogs, and elephants with unsuccessful results. The fact that no other animals responded to this experiment means that it cannot be said for sure that all non human animals are capable of self recognition. Therefore some non human animals do not show signs of ToM. Evolutionary science suggests that the higher primates are distant relatives of human beings, having similar physiology may mean that higher primates are more capable of intelligence. Social relationships refer to an animal s ability to form bonds with others of its species. This relationship formation may be affected by the animal s status or role in the community. In ... Page and L. Lavon Gray Chapter 1: Summary: In this text, Hungry for Worship, authors Frank Page and L. Gray write about the hunger for worshipping God that all leaders should possess. This term means that while older generations only find value in the traditions and heritage of our faith, the younger generations only find relevance in what is current. They also write this type of separation between the young and old has effectively begun dismembering the body of Christ limb by limb. The authors also put focus on the act of individual preferences through church shopping. This according to Page and Gray, result in the encouraging of churches to offer consumer driven programming in order to keep members on their rolls. They give scripture which identifies the importance of unity. Ephesians 4:14 16 shows how the body of Christ should be unified in the midst of diversity. Leaders should work extra hard to keep the church family worshipping together. The authors condemn chronological snobbery and suggest that both the young and old come together. The young generation must grow up and the older generation needs to adapt. Analysis: The authors point out a huge problem that is alive and well in the church. Due to personal preferences, the church has separated itself from one another. Not only are different cultures separate but the age differences within the church are separated amongst themselves. The leaders of worship within the church whether they are pastors or worship band leaders must not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Learning About Other Religions, People s Sexual... As we come to the end of the term looking back at the previous diversity summaries I find that this one in particular gave me more of an encouragement to think beyond what I already knew or didn t know about religion, people s sexual orientation and disabilities. From my personal experience and knowledge of other religions I was not expecting to see some that I have never even heard of before, or how much a person s sexual orientation can have impacts on their lives. As for disabilities, I have a brother who has a disability but it was a great learning experience, even with a short presentation on people with other disabilities, to grasp a deeper recognition of what it means to be a disabled person in the United States. Moving forward, I hope to summarize the presentations presented to the class on the final diversity topics and include my insight on them as well. For this diversity topic, learning about other religions should make us aware of the various world religions that exist. For us, these presentation summaries give way to how each person interviewed is affected either by other in their workplace or by society. We have five total presentations we can further our understanding for different religions that we may have never thought of in the aspect of diversity and discrimination. José Meza interviewed two people of two different religions, David and Joseph. David is an 18 year old college student who is of Hmong religion. He wishes others would know about his ... • 35. How Does Shakespeare Present Commitment In Romeo And Juliet Examine Shakespeare s presentation of commitment within a love relationship in Romeo and Juliet. William Shakespeare wrote over 400 plays during his life during the Elizabethan era, of which one of his more famous plays is Romeo and Juliet. People from all classes went to watch his plays at the Globe theatre where seating was available to suit the various classes. His plays examined several issues that occurred to Elizabethan society, at a time when loyalty, religion and family were paramount. This essay will be looking at the theme of commitment and how it was portrayed. Shakespeare shows the theme of commitment in the play Romeo and Juliet by demonstrating commitment to one another within a love relationship. This was demonstrated within the lines If thou dost love me, pronounce it faithfully which is followed later in that dialogue with Lady by blessed moon I swear. This shows commitment by swearing at the moon of their love, which is an example of pathetic fallacy due to the fact that this scene occurs at night. This is pathetic fallacy as the relationship is secretive which has connotations of darkness / night. The word moon can have several meanings in this context. The first meaning moon can have is of one where it provides light in the darkness which as previously discussed may be referring to the secrecy of their relationship. A second meaning is that the darkness represents the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets; whilst the moon is representing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
