Burroughs Not Marinetti s Futurist Essay
The potentials of the new technology created in the early twentieth century created a variety of
reactions with in society. Some people embraced the changes, others resisted the developments, and
still others fell somewhere in between. Filippo Tommaso Marinetti s piece, The Futurist Manifesto
, embraces the rapid transformation of society. His world is composed of fast, powerful machines
and strong, young citizens. The Manifesto also depicts an aggressive, violent, and unjust world that
is devoid of any morals. Edgar Rice Burroughsis another author whose work, A Princess of Mars,
addresses the future and its possibilities. It is the story of John Carter, an American Civil War
Veteran, who is mysteriously transported to Mars or Barsoom... Show more content on

He says, When we are forty let younger and stronger men than we throw us in the waste paper
basket like useless manuscripts (4). Just as significant as Carter s significant prowess is his
courageous, fearless, and violent demeanor. All of these traits are highly valued in Marinetti s
Futurist Manifesto. Nonetheless, this initial glance of Burroughs work is highly deceptive. Though
John Carter is violent, he only fights in self defense or in the defense of his dependents like his
Martian watchdog, Woola, and his love interest, Dejah Thoris. He exhibits a sense of morals and
justice that Marinetti clearly rejects in his manifesto. Burroughs stress on the value of morality is
further solidified by the comparison between the Tharks, the green Martians, and the red Martians
of Helium. The green Martians are warlike, uncultured, and unjust, which contributes to their
backwardness. On the other hand, the red Martians are highly civilized because they show fairness,
lawfulness, and love. (transition) Marinetti even states in the Manifesto of Futurism that, Beauty
exists only in the struggle. There is no masterpiece that has not an aggressive character. This suits
Marinetti s own piece because of the raw, violent, and sexual imagery used to describe the
machinery in the future. For example, the reader is confronted with rogue locomotives and hungry,
roaring automobiles . Furthermore, Marinetti says that the Futurists want to glorify war because it

Nonexistent hoods and inadequate hoods should be replaced and installed immediately. The
low on nonexistent fpm s produced by these hoods are in violation of OSHA regulations. Putting
garage doors on the equipment doors should be done after this. The free flow of lead from POS
to other parts of the plant is of great concern to everyone s health. Keeping the lead in the POS
department would make it much easier to control. The installation of a wind tunnel between
POS and COS should be installed in the next couple years. A large sized capital improvement
investment will be required for this construction. Personal hygiene, facility sanitation practices,
and employee dietary needs should be instituted immediately. These changes have very little cost
and do not require much labor downtime. Conclusion The blood lead levels in the Holland,
Ohio facility are the worst not only in the United States, but the world as well. In order to lower
these blood lead levels each changes and improvements must be made in all six categories
outlined in this report. The changes range from simple policy changes that at little or no cost, to
engineering controls that will be fairly expensive. I look forward to meeting with you and other

recommendations to reduce blood lead levels in the Holland, Ohio facility. Works

CASE STUDY UNDERSTANDING PERFORMANCE IN RETAILING: The case of Omega
Supermarkets
Background
Omega is a successful company and one of the largest supermarket chains in the UK, employing
a large number of staff in stores across the country. Although the industry has seen very little
growth in recent years, Omega has successfully increased its market share through a policy of
lowering prices (the company claims to have reduced prices by 7.5 per cent between 2004 2009)
and improving customer service. It currently holds a dominant share of the UK market in its core
business and is growing rapidly in related areas. The company plans to continue expanding in the
UK, opening up new stores on brownfield sites in regeneration areas.
The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A more recent change within Omega has been the drive for consistency across stores, and all
policies, procedures and processes are centrally determined and their implementation closely
monitored. Each store is governed by the company routines handbook which provides detailed
information on how every task is to be performed this is down to the minutest detail even
including details on office layout, such as where pictures should go on the wall. On the HR side
all policies and procedures are highly centralised and controlled the wage budget for example is
fixed for each store and there is no local flexibility on pay something which was obviously a cause
for great frustration in some of the stores where recruitment, retention and staff quality are on going
major problems. Although the stores cannot function without these routines it is the way in which
the rules and routines are implemented that is considered a key ingredient for success. It is
management, in particular, store managers, who are responsible for how policies are implemented
and their behaviour is therefore critical to a store s performance.
Section managers occupy first line manager position within the store. Spans of control (The
number of subordinates who report directly to a given manager or superior), are normally 12
general assistants to each section manager and in a large store there may be about 20 section

Higher Learning Essay
The film Higher Learning is a call to action. It is a film that shows people as products of their
environment. The film is set on a college campus, a place where most people learn about what
they will do in their adult life to try to better the world or simply educate themselves in order to
live a better life. However, life on the Columbus campus is not good; it is a battlefield between
the races and sexes. I feel it is a bit exaggerated, but it allows people to see some of the issues that
go on, on a college campus. The film focuses on three freshman (Malik, Kristen, Remy) entering
college. They enter a less than ideal new world that is filled with tension, anxiety and fear. Although
the writer uses stereotypical characters, it... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additionally, Cross, Parham and Helms (1991) cite the broad applicability of this model by
alluding to the fact that several authors in different parts of the country were developing parallel
models independently indicating that African American identity development was essentially
the same across several regions of the United States. The main character, Malik, is a cocky
African American track star that thinks everyone has it easier than him. He feels that the world
owes him something, but almost everyone in it will work to hold him down. Epps has made a
living portraying one type of athlete or another, but this is probably his best work because he
creates a character that can be very accurate and likeable one minute, but totally juvenile and
wildly frustrating the next. He struggles throughout the movie, but like the Fredrick Douglas
quote used here says, without struggle there is no progress. Malik really grows up a lot because
the three main people around him are good influences. Malik Williams (Omar Epps) fits the
traditional athlete type: cocky and arrogant. An urban black male on a partial track scholarship,
Malik is at school to run, not learn. His attitude is that the world owes him, not the other way
around. The reality that he can lose comes as an ego bruising lesson. In one of his most
memorable roles, Laurence Fishburne subtly and cleverly plays Professor Maurice Phipps. Phipps
is a no b.s. man of great wisdom that treats everyone equally and

Essay on Personality Analysis
Abstract The purpose of this paper is to discuss characteristics of my personality. The main focus
of this paper will be how my personality has developed over time. As I age and encounter new
and different experiences, my personality has adapted and developed further. This paper will give
an in depth exploration into the people and events that have influenced my personality. Personality
is defined as a) the sum total of the physical, mental, emotional, and social characteristics of an
individual. b) the organized pattern of behavioral characteristics of the individual (Dictionary.com,
2010). Whether we realize it or not, personality defines us as people. There are many facets to my

I had to step out of my comfort zone and do what needed to be done in order to reach my goals.
On the graduate level, I find that it is easier to be an introvert and participate. Once the human
element is taken away, I can find myself being open. I do not see my classmates face to face so I
can allow myself to say things that I ordinarily would not do or say. As I have gotten older, some
of the introversion has faded to a certain extent, but it is still present. Through my job as a
Special Education Teacher, I have had to overcome a majority of my introversion so I can
effectively do my job. On any given day, I will have to speak to not only my students but also
the office staff, coworkers, and possibly some of the children s parents. Conversation goes both
ways, so to be successful at my job; I would have to be willing to be open and communicate with
others more. I also have to realize that I need to make the first step sometimes. Not everyone is
going to come to me; there are times I am going to have to go to others. Another characteristic of
my personality is care. Despite my ever present introversion, I have always harbored a deep care
for most people. Early in my childhood, my parents taught the importance of caring for others.
Throughout my life, I have always put others before myself. Sometimes I do this out of genuine
care for the other party, but other times, I find myself doing this so the other

The Pizza Ovens And Fryers Make It Extremely Hot At Sam s...
The pizza ovens and fryers make it extremely hot at Sam s Pizza. All three pizza ovens are set to
550 degrees and, and all three fryers are set to 400 degrees. In the summer the temperature can
reach over 100 degrees in the pizza shop. Working an 8 hour shift in these temperatures can be a
grueling experience. The heatin the shop matched with the buffet and non stop pizzaorder phone
calls make it even worse. I remember the first time working a long shift when I started working
at Sam s. It was harder than I would have ever imagined. The heat really affected my ability to
work efficiently. After a few hours I could tell I wasn t working as hard as I was at the beginning
of my shift. Working tired and hungry in that heat really drained a lot of my energy. It made it hard
to communicate effectively and be nice while talking to costumers.
I m not the only one who has had bad long shift experiences. A new 16 year old employee who
started working at Sam s pizza in August didn t have the best experience on his first day at the
job. The employee worked a six hour shift and about five hours in he passed out while he was
rolling pizza dough. He was completely fine after about five minutes. We gave him water, and he
was back to work right away. He told us the reason he passed out was because he had an anxiety
attack. It was extremely hot that day, and I think the heat played a big role in making him pass out.

Sociology In Sociology
Social structure and social interaction are based on two levels of analysis: Macrosociology and
microsociology. Macrosociology, like its name describes, is focused on the broad view of
society and how it studies society s behavior. Theorists can analyze and distinguish the different
social classes and groups in society. Microsociology is focused on social interaction, how people
react and what they do when they are together. Theorists can examine people s behaviors and
how they communicate to one another. Both can be used to understand society and society s
social life. Macrosociology. In Belize, teachers and lectures tend to be more comfortable around
their students. In the United States, students will probably not encounter their professors out
late at night in a club. In Belize, however, it not uncommon to see a lecturer out drinking in the
club. This is our social structure. It common to see your teacher drinking as common as it is to
not be surprised by it. In the Cayo district of Belize, it is polite to say the time of day to your
elder. In the Belize district, people walk past each other without saying a word. The social
structure is the behavior that people in our society deem acceptable or a norm. A social class is
a large number of people that have similar income, education, and/or career. Looking at class,
really broadens the view of society and how divided it is. Whether it is a small or large gap
between the social class, there are still distinct features.

The Media And Its Portrayal Of Athletes
According to Knight and Giuliano s 2001 article, gender equality has been and will remain a
current topic of hot discussion in the media and its portrayal of athletes. Athletes have a unique
ability to deliver their thoughts and information to the masses through the media outlets given to
them in regard to their social status. Once the media has heard what the athletes have to say it
can be at the media s hand for interpretation. In this specific study 92 undergraduates were given a
fake newspaper that covered an Olympian with the main focus being on attractiveness. The
study covered male and female athletes in the newspaper article while focusing predominantly
on attractiveness. Results show that the readers not only disliked the attraction focus, but also
preferred the reading be more focused on the athleticism of the Olympians. The largest take
away from the study is the media and its coverage or portrayal of athletes being geared towards
athletic achievement over quality of appearance In Riebock and Bae s 2013 literature review
they discuss the differences in men and women athletes body perception in the media. To get their
results they used multiple questionnaires that revolved around questions dealing with body
shame, self objectification and their appearance goal. Their conclusion said grade level and
ethnicity do not play a significant role in the effects of the media on body perceptions (Riebock

Persuasive Essay About The Superhero
Growing up we often find ourselves talking about realistic and fictional heroes at some point in
our lifetime. Most of us can remember being asked questions like who s your favorite superhero or
if
you could be a superhero which would you choose. Those were always hard questions to me
because my interest at the time consisted of watching the latest Hannah Montana episodes.
Although I never
went out of my way to watch or read about the fictional superheroes, I knew things like what kind
of powers they had and how their costume looked. I never based my opinion on their actual
character
and their mission as a hero. Avoiding the names like Superman and Batman was nearly impossible.
They were on t shirts, book bags, and even took up a whole aisle in the toy section at our local
grocery store. Just recently I started watching the superhero movies like Captain America: The First
Avenger and Iron Man. Unlike the others, there was a connection I had in the beginning with the
characters because before they transformed into the superhero that is known today, we met the
person
underneath the costume and became familiar with their imperfections and strengths as a normal
human
being like you and me. As the viewers, we develop different expectations superheroes should meet,
like their powers, their costume, and even their characters personality. We could change who we are
to
be like those seen in the movies or simply find the superhero in us. Captain America and

How Nurturing Shapes The Hero
How Nurturing Shapes the Hero
The topic of human morality has been debated by great thinkers throughout human history. And
human nature too is like the water: it doesn t chose between good and evil any more than water
chooses between east and west. (Austin 79) In fact, it can be argued that what constitutes an
immutable form of good vs. evil has been at the source of debates in both religious morality and a
broader philosophical understanding of what these forms represent. Furthermore, morality has been
fluid over time, changing to reflect the cultural mores of society; given enough time, even
perception of previously taboo practices has changed in response to changes in culture as well as
the proliferation and recession of religion. As ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Proponents of an absolute definition of morals suggest that there is a defined right and wrong and
that acting in a way that is virtuous or immoral, respectively, determines one s fate in the afterlife.
This is not universal, as the behaviors deemed as moral depend on religious custom, and both the
benefits and penalties of adhering to them require a shared belief. One such scholar, Immanuel Kant
believed the moral law must carry with it absolute necessity (Kant 2). A contemporary Christian
viewpoint is that a practicing Christian is inherently sinful and must find salvation through belief,
this presupposes that man is immoral from birth.
While this a working definition of morality for those who share his beliefs, as he states we can
reasonably hope to find true happiness only after death, as a reward granted by God (Lenoir 16).
Kant s philosophical stance depends on religious belief in both God and an afterlife as key
conceptual features of morality. In Kant s view, God has defined morals through scripture, and
adherence to God s moral authority secures the benefits of acting morally in the form of true
happiness and continuity beyond the veil of death. Therefore, Kant s moral concept does not
explain morality at the least for polytheists, but also those who seek to act morally but are

The Wolf In Quentin Tarantino s Pulp Fiction
Just because you are a character doesn t mean that you have character. This was said by The
Wolf in Quentin Tarantino s movie Pulp Fiction. Tarantino opens our minds to a word with no

There are so many twist and turns, with storylines out of order and violence mixed in with
everyday conversations. It s a movie that can get you confused and grossed out but also excited
and thrilled. It s so casually not casual and as a viewer I have such mixed feelings on it. Pulp

Tarantino develops an array of crooks and gangsters who work in a business of money and
drugs. He makes them indulge in little conversations to express their perspectives on life and
what exactly goes through the minds of these so called ВЁbadВЁ men. Hitmen Jules Winnfield
and Vincent Vega (played by Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta) do some pretty terrible
things but still manage to have conversations that normal people have on a daily basis. For
example they were driving to kill a bunch of boys for screwing over their boss and on the way
there all the talked about was what European countries call their hamburgers at McDonalds. I
found this very comical because they are literally driving to an apartment to hunt down these
men and that is what is on there mind. Even right before they walk in they talk about the deeper
meaning behind giving a foot massage. They are so nonchalant about everything they do and I
almost admire that. Of course what they are doing is wrong but the way they make light of the
situation infers the fact of their perspective on life. People don t need to be serious and stern all
the time and Vincent and Jules prove that. That s how the movie kept me entertained because I
could relate to the characters. There weren t just hit men with no interior but men who could be
normal. I also really enjoyed the character Mia Wallace (played by Uma Thurman). Although she
was addicted to drugs she gave the audience an inside to her mind and what she thought of. Like
in the movie she talked about how if two people were so comfortable with one another then they
can sit in silence and it wouldn t be weird. She quotes ВЁThat s when you know you ve found
somebody really special, when you can just shut the f*** up for a minute and comfortably share a
silence.ВЁ I find that to be very true. If you truly are comfortable then not talking should just be
normal. Pulp Fiction does a great job composing

society has had much time to be exposed to and affected by the influences of many different
cultures viewpoints. In comparison, the Heian court was a more closed society, so back then, the
notions of what was acceptable and unacceptable and the standards to which men and women were
measured were more defined. Genji monogatari suggests the standards to which the sexes should be
measured and gives examples of people who meet the standards. It goes without saying that Genji,
the hero of the tale, is the perfect man. Throughout the tale, every character,... Show more content

He obeyed, among others, the convention of sending poems to women after staying the night with
them. Genji was a prodigy when it came to the playing the kin, and he could even play the sЕЌ no
koto. Judging by the way that he was portrayed, I would not be surprised if there was not an
instrument that he could not play. When Genji and TЕЌ no ChЕ«jЕЌ performed Blue Sea Waves,
although TЕЌ no ChЕ«jЕЌ was very skillful in his dancing as if he had rehearsed many times,
Genji was still the person who drew all of the attention from their audience. Genji s dance was so
elegant, and his voice was so beautiful that it was likened to the kalavinka, the bird that sings in
paradise. Genji s prowess with painting was also out of this world. The picture contest in chapter
17 ended immediately after his paintings were revealed, even though the previous contenders were
expert painters brought in specifically for the competition. His paintings were renderings of Suma
and Akashi the places where he had spent his time in exile. Seeing paintings that captured the
essence of the faraway place that Genji had gone to brought tears to everyone s eyes as they were
filled once again with feelings surrounding the despair brought on by Genji s absence. The manner
in which Genji treated his many lovers was another quality that made him such a great man. He
took pity on women for their shortcomings and trespasses against him rather than hating and
blaming them.

Comparison of Aristotle and Thomas Hobbes Essay
The foremost difference between Aristotle and Hobbes, and in turn classical and modern political
philosophies , with regard to a good life and happiness is that of normative judgments about the
good life. While Hobbes rejects normative judgments about the good life and discusses human
actions without attributions of moral quality, Aristotle offers the exact opposite. In Ethics, Aristotle
differentiates between good and evil actions along with what the best good, or summum bonum,
for all humans while Hobbes approach argues that good and bad varies from one individual to
another with good being the object of an individuals appetite or desire, and evil being an object of
his hate and aversion. In addition, Aristotle makes it clear that... Show more content on

Accordingly, whatever the excellent person finds pleasurable, should be considered the standard
for judging individuals moral quality, as stated in the following passage: In fact, however, the
pleasures differ quite a lot, in human beings at any rate. For some things delight some people,
and cause pain to others; and while some find them painful and hateful, others find them
pleasant and lovable...But in all such cases it seems that what is really so is what appears so to
the excellent person. If this is right, as it seems to be, and virtue, i.e., the good person insofar as
he is good, is the measure of each thing, then what appear pleasures to him will also really be
pleasures...and if what he finds objectionable appears pleasant to someone, that is not at all
surprising: for human beings suffer many sorts of corruption and damage. It is not pleasant,
however, except to those people in these conditions. The previous passage shows then that the
appetites or desires of corrupted people should not be taken into account while discussing the moral
quality of an individuals actions. Aristotle s definition of mean, which is having certain feelings at
the right times, about the right things, towards the right people, for the right end, and in the right
way , clearly states that there is only one right answer to any moral dilemma faced by an

Framers Of Constitution
George Washington said, I do not expect the Constitution to last for more than 20 years (Gilder
Lehrman). Today, we have oldest written constitution in the world. It has been able to endure
because it is flexible and it stresses liberty and equality to the American people. The book states, It
has endured for more than two centuries as the framework of government because it has changed
over time (Overview). Thomas Jefferson, based on his notion that the world belongs to the living
was technically right. We are the living and our Constitutionis basically the same as it was when he
made that statement.
The framers of the Constitution established the all encompassing structure of government in order

What Was Washington s Foreign Affairs
When Washington took over office the United States was a fairly small country compared to today
there was only 11 states and around 4 million people. With no precedent for how presidents should
conduct themselves, knowing that he would set the example on how future presidents would act
Washington began to set many good examples such as respect, fairness, and integrity. Washington
supported certain nations but otherwise decided to remain neutral and stayed out of foreign affairs.
Domestically, Washington signed to start the first national bank for America, he also nominated the
first supreme court justice which was John Jay. One big thing about Washington though is that he
didn t believe in political parties and didn t take part in any party

Red Wrestling Narrative
I can remember my freshmen year one of my teammates got into a fight and kneed a Lehigh
wrestler in the face and knock him out after a match. Scuffles like these are frequent when our two
teams collide, tensions always run high when the big red encounter their brown and white
counterparts. The two colors may form a beautiful burgundy, but the two schools do not mix as well.
This is a date that is marked on everyone s calendar: fans, wrestlers, and coaches. We talk about
this match every year; it is a must win. In the center of this arena is a black and red wrestling mat in
the shape of a square, around 12 meters long on each side. The bleachers are pulled out waiting to

Richard III Research Paper
The Tragedy of Richard III by William Shakespeare depicts Richard III as a horrible, manipulative,
and power hungry monarch; not so much when he is a monarch, but in the events leading up to his
reign. Whether this interpretation of Richard is accurate will be determined through evidence that
either supports or denies Shakespeare s version of the events. Not mentioned in The Tragedy of
Richard IIIare all of the accomplishments that Richard succeeded in during his reign, considering
that he spent much of his time as king defending his throne. In December of 1483, Richard
established the Court of Requests. The Court of Requests was a place where poor people who did

Where blame is concerned, many of the sources, from the time Shakespeare was writing The
Tragedy of Richard III, that were reporting on Richard, had a consistent anti Ricardian bias. They
could have gathered the information and interviewed the necessary people to gain a more
favorable view of Richard, but they didn t. In the process, they overlooked lots of propaganda and
postdated rewriting of history (Hicks). Shakespeare wrote Richard as a Vice characterbecause there
was really no other opposing viewpoint. In addition, when Shakespeare wrote The Tragedy of
Richard III, Queen Elizabeth I was the current ruler of England. Queen Elizabeth I was a
descendant of King Henry VIII, referred to in Shakespeare s play as Richmond, who is the man
that overthrew Richard, and killed him on Bosworth Field. The official party line of the
Elizabethan era was that Richard was a monster who was not a legitimate ruler of England.

[Note Fig. 7.1.] III.ECONOMIC RATIONALES FOR GOVERNMENTAL INTERVENTION
Government intervention in the trade process may be either economic or noneconomic in nature.
[See Table 7.1.] A. Unemployment Persistent unemployment pushes many groups to call for
protectionism; one of the most effective is organized labor. By limiting imports, local jobs are
retained as firms and consumers are forced to purchase domestically produced goods and services.
However, unless the protectionist country is relatively small, such measures usually do little to
limit unemployment. On the other hand, they may result in a decline in export related jobs because
of (i) price increases for components or (ii) lower incomes abroad. Further, such measures are likely
to lead to retaliation unless either the protectionist or the affected country is relatively small. Thus,
governments must carefully balance the costs of higher prices with the costs of unemployment and
the displaced production that would result from freer trade when enacting such measures. B. Infant
Industry Argument First presented by Alexander Hamilton in 1792, the infant industry argument
holds that a government should temporarily shield emerging industries in which the country may
ultimately possess a comparative advantage from international competition until

How Chinese Policies Helped Strengthen Or Weaken Uyghur...
Introduction Out of the fifty five recognized ethnic minorities within China, Uyghur is the 5th
largest population out of the 8.3 million. Uyghur independence movements started in 1933, their
primary aim was to create a sovereign state called East Turkestan within the region currently known
as Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China (XUAR). This thesis seeks to answer the
question of how the Chinese government s policies towards the Uyghur s, a Turkish Muslim group
living predominately in the North Western Chinese province Xinjiang, have influenced the political
strengthening of the Uyghur s. The aspect of this question will be explored: Have the Chinese
policies helped to strengthen or weaken Uyghur identity? Additionally, the hypothesis for the
research question is that the Chinese policies have not favored nor shaped the Uyghur s interest.
Chinese Government s Policies The Chinese government s policies toward the Uyghur s in
Xinjiang is broken down into two broad categories. The first category consists of policies that
are focused on the assimilation and social and economic development of Uyghur s. These
policies include regulations on minorities languages, and affirmative action policies in education.
The second category is made up of what is called hard policies. This hard approach includes
restrictions on civil liberties such as freedom of assembly, freedom of religion, freedom of speech,
and freedom of the press. Beginning in the early 200s, the Chinese

Effect Of Climate Change On Marine Mammals
Effect of Climate Change on Marine Mammals
The earth is protected from the sun rays by a thick layer known as the ozone layer.
The ozone layer act as a semi permeable membrane, by allowing some gasses to pass through while
preventing others thereby keeping the earth s temperature in a stable state. Global warming is the
increase in earth s temperature due to the depletion of the ozone layer. This depletion is having an
adverse effect on the earth as a whole. The earth s temperature is constantly rising. This rising
temperature has disrupted the ecosystem in marine lives by altering the food chain, breeding cycles
and migration of marine mammals. According to the intergovernmental panel on climatechange, ...

The arctic top predator, the polar bear is being greatly affected by global warming. The polar
bear uses ice as its resting place and also as its hunting ground, by capturing sea lions when they
come up through holes in the ice. As a result of the melting of the arctic because of global
warming, these predators have being forced to search for areas with more stable ice that can
support their lifestyle. Others have being forced to swim for long distances and even drown in
the ocean in search of a new habitat. A 2007 report from the U.S. Geological Service estimated
that as a result of sea ice decline, today s population of about 22,000 polar bears would decrease
by two thirds by the year 2050 . The rapid decrease in the number of polar bears will force these
animals into extinction. Climate change doesn t only have an adverse effect on polar bears but
also on sea turtles. Part of the life cycle of these marine creatures take place on land as well as in
the ocean. Female turtles come on land to nest and lay their eggs, and later return back to the
ocean. The increase in water levels as a result of melting icebergs has forced these marine
mammals to swim long distances to go on shore and lay their eggs. Increase in marine
temperatures may have an adverse effect on the incubation period of these marine mammals. It
may lead to most eggs are not being fertilized, or a bias in the

Epic Similes In The Odyssey
Homer s epic poem The Odyssey translated by Robert Fagles completely illustrate Odysseus s
journey home after The Trojan War. Separated into twenty four different books, the poem describes
the hardships Odysseus faces and how he overcomes obstacles. Though this poem is composed for
listeners and may seem incomprehensible, Homer includes a plethora of literary devices to help
audiences better understand, follow, and enjoy the context of The Odyssey. Throughout this poem
instances of epic simile, foreshadowing, epithet, and xenia are included to help the poem flow. Epic
Similes are featured largely throughout The Odyssey, comparing epic task to something mundane.

Odysseus has been held in Polyphemus s cave for some time now, so he devises a plan of
escape. Odysseus speaks out to his crew for help saying Who d brave it out with me to hoist our
stake and grind it into his eye. (221) This foreshadows Odysseus and his crew grinding the stake
into the cyclops eye, ultimately leading to the crew s escape. As his journey home escalates and
challenges become harder, Odysseus is faced with the ultimatum for the The Cattle of The Sun.
Prior to his decision he is warned Leave the beast unharmed, your mind set on home, and you all
may still reach Ithaca but harm them in any way, and I can see it now: your ship destroyed, your
men destroyed as well, and even if you escape, you ll come home late, all shipmates lost, and
come a broken man. (275) Homer includes the foreshadowing of the blind prophet s statement,
informing spectators of the two possible outcomes based off Odysseus and his crew s choice.
Before the slaughter of the suitors has even occurred, Homer foreshadows the event vaguely. As
the suitors continue to disrespect Odysseus it is brought to their attention that, Once under his
own roof, he and your friends, believe you me, won t part till blood has flowed (380) The
foreshadowment is obvious when stated won t part till blood has flowed , implying that in time to

Jungle Stereotypes In Little Black Sambo, Betty Boop,
Surprisingly, I personally thought the idea of observing these cartoons with a third eye was
highly effective. Usually, people tend to look past exactly what the cartoons are portraying. I
noticed throughout all of the cartoons they were humanizing racism. I saw a diversity in cultures
from all of the cartoons. Frequently, I observed how all the cultures were represented and the way
they were dressed. Additionally, one thing that stood out from the rest was physical appearance.
Between the two cartoons Little Black Sambo, Betty Boop, All this Rabbit Stew, and Jungle Jitters
the African Americans all had the same physical features such as facial appearance. The setting of
Little Black Sambo and Jungle Jitters were very similar plus they both had that jungle stereotype.
Jungle Jitters initially illustrated how African Americans are jungle eating people. Social justice

experience I wanted and simply live it out in the machine. This is extremely tempting due to the
absence of responsibility what person wouldn t wantto go at least 2 years without having to worry
about any job, school, or other duties to stress them out? It is also tempting because of the
opportunity to be able to experience many things that probably would not be possible in the real
world for the common person (like me). Imagine being able to experience and have the memory of
an exciting and adventurous activity such as climbing Mt. Everest, without having to be in any
actual danger or pay for any of the expensive costs that are associated with such an adventure....

The main reason to not plug into the experience machine, for me, would be that it goes against
my religious views as a Christian. God has a plan for everyone and I feel like spending two years
in a machine that only gives me the pleasure of certain events without affecting the world in any
sort of way is not part of that plan. It also seems as if my life would be a waste if I spent even as
little as 2 years in the machine. Instead of spending the 2 years meeting real new people or going
through a real experience, you would just sit in the machine getting experiences that are solely for
your own pleasure and have no actual meaning in the real

A Good Man Is Hard For Find By Flannery O Conner Essay
Flannery O Conner grew up in the backwoods of Georgia, where she found her inspiration for her
writing. Her Southern heritage was not the only thing that influenced her though; often her
Roman Catholic faith would impact her stories as well (Ellis 35 36). She described herself as a
Catholic peculiarly possessed of the modern consciousness (qtd. in Hubbard 38) and stated that
the best of [her] work sounded like the old testament would sound if it were being written today
(qtd. in Kreyling 85). As such, O Conner is known for her portrayal of religious themes throughout
her writings. In A Good Man is Hard to Find, Flannery O Conner utilizes violence in order to
develop the grandmother s character within the story, and by doing so, she is able to demonstrate
the difference between having a moral code and being virtuous.
For clarity, a person with a moral code by no means has to be virtuous, for a moral code is
simply a set of rules or a code of conduct which governs how an individual should act within a
community (Pam). By following a moral code, a character is not necessarily morally good. We
see this clearly in the grandmother. From the very beginning, it is made clear that the
grandmother s perception of right and wrong is rather superficial; that is to say, she bases both
her code of conduct and her perception of being good off of the opinions of others. Making this
abundantly clear in the very beginning of the story, O Conner writes a full paragraph to overly

Felix Mendelssohn s Accomplishments
ABSRACT The thesis of this essay is to illustrate the life of Felix Mendelssohn and to expound on
his accomplishments, his style of work as well as the influence his music had on the early Romantic
era. Mendelssohn was a German composer, pianist, organist, and conductor. He wrote symphonies,
concerti, oratorios, piano musicand chamber music. Mendelssohn was regarded as a child prodigy,
just like Mozart had been before him. At six years of age Mendelssohn began taking piano lessons
from his mother, and at seven he was tutored by Marie Bigot in Paris. Carl Friedrich Zelter had a
significant influence on the boy s future career, as he taught Mendelssohn counterpoint and
composition. His music was also deeply influenced by Bach,... Show more content on

The 72 year old man noticed the child s gift and was perhaps the first to see the comparison with
Mozart. To Zelter he said,
Musical prodigies [...] are probably no longer so rare; but what this little man can do in
extemporizing and playing at sight borders the miraculous. And I could not have believed it
possible at so early an age. And yet you heard Mozart in his seventh year at Frankfurt? said Zelter.
Yes, answered Goethe, [...] but what your pupil already accomplishes, bears the same relation to
the Mozart o that time, that the cultivated talk of a grown up person bears to the prattle of a child
(Todd R. Larry 2003, 89.)
Despite the big age gap, Goethe and Felix became friends. Later in his life Felix composed music
inspired by Goethe s writings, such as Die erste Walpurgisnacht (The First Walpurgis Night, Op.
60, 1832) and Meeresstille und glГјckliche Fahrt (Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, Op. 27, 1828),
as well as other choral works. He also dedicated his Piano Quartet No. 3 in B Minor in 1825.

Colonial America
During 1607 1753, Colonial America was founded. Starting on 1492, when Christopher
Columbus discovered land beyond the England, people were launched into a new life. A group
of puritans departed from England to escape the growing stress of the English government.
Searching for freedom, in both religion and government, they sailed towards America. Their main
goal was not only to start e new life, but also to convert the savages; Indians. With this move they
experienced many difficulties. Upon starting a new life, they had to learn a new way of political
life, social life, educational life, and above all religious lives.
Today the controversy of the importance of Christianity to the colonists in the years preceding the
American Revolution ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It became to be known as the little Bible because religious instruction was integrated into the
grammar lessons. The eighty page book taught the alphabet as well as moral and spiritual
principles. After graduating from high school, you could go to college. However, in order to be
accepted, there were strict requirements that one had to follow. Every student should be able to
read, construe, and parse Tully, Virgil, and the Greek NT; and to write true Latin in prose and to
understand common arithmetic. Nevertheless, not only will they have to accomplish all these,
but they also have to live a religious, blameless life in God. Every student was forced to
constantly pray in the school hallways every morning and evening; as well as read a passage of
scripture. The professors were to take turns preaching from God s Word in the halls.
Additionally, if any student were to act rudely or profane the Sabbath, they would be harshly
disciplined. Unfortunately, the government governed even their schools strictly. Colonial
America s social life was probably the most interesting aspect of their new lives. They had two
main laws by which to live by; The Moral Law and the Law of Grace. According to the Moral Law,
every man was to love his neighbor, and help in times of want or distress. However the Law of
Grace, calls men to put a difference between Christians and others.

  • 2. Burroughs Not Marinetti s Futurist Essay The potentials of the new technology created in the early twentieth century created a variety of reactions with in society. Some people embraced the changes, others resisted the developments, and still others fell somewhere in between. Filippo Tommaso Marinetti s piece, The Futurist Manifesto , embraces the rapid transformation of society. His world is composed of fast, powerful machines and strong, young citizens. The Manifesto also depicts an aggressive, violent, and unjust world that is devoid of any morals. Edgar Rice Burroughsis another author whose work, A Princess of Mars, addresses the future and its possibilities. It is the story of John Carter, an American Civil War Veteran, who is mysteriously transported to Mars or Barsoom... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He says, When we are forty let younger and stronger men than we throw us in the waste paper basket like useless manuscripts (4). Just as significant as Carter s significant prowess is his courageous, fearless, and violent demeanor. All of these traits are highly valued in Marinetti s Futurist Manifesto. Nonetheless, this initial glance of Burroughs work is highly deceptive. Though John Carter is violent, he only fights in self defense or in the defense of his dependents like his Martian watchdog, Woola, and his love interest, Dejah Thoris. He exhibits a sense of morals and justice that Marinetti clearly rejects in his manifesto. Burroughs stress on the value of morality is further solidified by the comparison between the Tharks, the green Martians, and the red Martians of Helium. The green Martians are warlike, uncultured, and unjust, which contributes to their backwardness. On the other hand, the red Martians are highly civilized because they show fairness, lawfulness, and love. (transition) Marinetti even states in the Manifesto of Futurism that, Beauty exists only in the struggle. There is no masterpiece that has not an aggressive character. This suits Marinetti s own piece because of the raw, violent, and sexual imagery used to describe the machinery in the future. For example, the reader is confronted with rogue locomotives and hungry, roaring automobiles . Furthermore, Marinetti says that the Futurists want to glorify war because it is the ... The free flow of lead from POS to other parts of the plant is of great concern to everyone s health. Keeping the lead in the POS department would make it much easier to control. The installation of a wind tunnel between POS and COS should be installed in the next couple years. A large sized capital improvement investment will be required for this construction. Although the industry has seen very little growth in recent years, Omega has successfully increased its market share through a policy of lowering prices (the company claims to have reduced prices by 7.5 per cent between 2004 2009) and improving customer service. A more recent change within Omega has been the drive for consistency across stores, and all policies, procedures and processes are centrally determined and their implementation closely monitored. On the HR side all policies and procedures are highly centralised and controlled the wage budget for example is fixed for each store and there is no local flexibility on pay something which was obviously a cause for great frustration in some of the stores where recruitment, retention and staff quality are on going major problems. Although the stores cannot function without these routines it is the way in which the rules and routines are implemented that is considered a key ingredient for success. The film is set on a college campus, a place where most people learn about what they will do in their adult life to try to better the world or simply educate themselves in order to live a better life. However, life on the Columbus campus is not good; it is a battlefield between the races and sexes. I feel it is a bit exaggerated, but it allows people to see some of the issues that go on, on a college campus. The film focuses on three freshman (Malik, Kristen, Remy) entering college. The main character, Malik, is a cocky African American track star that thinks everyone has it easier than him. He feels that the world owes him something, but almost everyone in it will work to hold him down. Epps has made a living portraying one type of athlete or another, but this is probably his best work because he creates a character that can be very accurate and likeable one minute, but totally juvenile and wildly frustrating the next. He struggles throughout the movie, but like the Fredrick Douglas quote used here says, without struggle there is no progress. Malik really grows up a lot because the three main people around him are good influences. Malik Williams (Omar Epps) fits the traditional athlete type: cocky and arrogant. An urban black male on a partial track scholarship, Malik is at school to run, not learn. His attitude is that the world owes him, not the other way around. Macrosociology, like its name describes, is focused on the broad view of society and how it studies society s behavior. Theorists can analyze and distinguish the different social classes and groups in society. Microsociology is focused on social interaction, how people react and what they do when they are together. Theorists can examine people s behaviors and how they communicate to one another. Both can be used to understand society and society s social life. Macrosociology. Once the media has heard what the athletes have to say it can be at the media s hand for interpretation. Those were always hard questions to me because my interest at the time consisted of watching the latest Hannah Montana episodes. Although I never went out of my way to watch or read about the fictional superheroes, I knew things like what kind of powers they had and how their costume looked. I never based my opinion on their actual character and their mission as a hero. Avoiding the names like Superman and Batman was nearly impossible. They were on t shirts, book bags, and even took up a whole aisle in the toy section at our local grocery store. Just recently I started watching the superhero movies like Captain America: The First Avenger and Iron Man. Unlike the others, there was a connection I had in the beginning with the characters because before they transformed into the superhero that is known today, we met the person underneath the costume and became familiar with their imperfections and strengths as a normal human being like you and me. And human nature too is like the water: it doesn t chose between good and evil any more than water chooses between east and west. (Austin 79) In fact, it can be argued that what constitutes an immutable form of good vs. evil has been at the source of debates in both religious morality and a broader philosophical understanding of what these forms represent. As ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Proponents of an absolute definition of morals suggest that there is a defined right and wrong and that acting in a way that is virtuous or immoral, respectively, determines one s fate in the afterlife. This is not universal, as the behaviors deemed as moral depend on religious custom, and both the benefits and penalties of adhering to them require a shared belief. One such scholar, Immanuel Kant believed the moral law must carry with it absolute necessity (Kant 2). A contemporary Christian viewpoint is that a practicing Christian is inherently sinful and must find salvation through belief, this presupposes that man is immoral from birth. While this a working definition of morality for those who share his beliefs, as he states we can reasonably hope to find true happiness only after death, as a reward granted by God (Lenoir 16). Kant s philosophical stance depends on religious belief in both God and an afterlife as key conceptual features of morality. In Kant s view, God has defined morals through scripture, and adherence to God s moral authority secures the benefits of acting morally in the form of true happiness and continuity beyond the veil of death. Therefore, Kant s moral concept does not explain morality at the least for polytheists, but also those who seek to act morally but are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In Ethics, Aristotle differentiates between good and evil actions along with what the best good, or summum bonum, for all humans while Hobbes approach argues that good and bad varies from one individual to another with good being the object of an individuals appetite or desire, and evil being an object of his hate and aversion. [Note Fig. 7.1.] III.ECONOMIC RATIONALES FOR GOVERNMENTAL INTERVENTION Government intervention in the trade process may be either economic or noneconomic in nature. [See Table 7.1.] A. Unemployment Persistent unemployment pushes many groups to call for protectionism; one of the most effective is organized labor. By limiting imports, local jobs are retained as firms and consumers are forced to purchase domestically produced goods and services. However, unless the protectionist country is relatively small, such measures usually do little to limit unemployment. On the other hand, they may result in a decline in export related jobs because of (i) price increases for components or (ii) lower incomes abroad. Further, such measures are likely to lead to retaliation unless either the protectionist or the affected country is relatively small. Thus, governments must carefully balance the costs of higher prices with the costs of unemployment and the displaced production that would result from freer trade when enacting such measures. B. Introduction Out of the fifty five recognized ethnic minorities within China, Uyghur is the 5th largest population out of the 8.3 million. Uyghur independence movements started in 1933, their primary aim was to create a sovereign state called East Turkestan within the region currently known as Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China (XUAR). This thesis seeks to answer the question of how the Chinese government s policies towards the Uyghur s, a Turkish Muslim group living predominately in the North Western Chinese province Xinjiang, have influenced the political strengthening of the Uyghur s. The aspect of this question will be explored: Have the Chinese policies helped to strengthen or weaken Uyghur identity? Chinese Government s Policies The Chinese government s policies toward the Uyghur s in Xinjiang is broken down into two broad categories. The first category consists of policies that are focused on the assimilation and social and economic development of Uyghur s. As a result of the melting of the arctic because of global warming, these predators have being forced to search for areas with more stable ice that can support their lifestyle. Others have being forced to swim for long distances and even drown in the ocean in search of a new habitat. A 2007 report from the U.S. Geological Service estimated that as a result of sea ice decline, today s population of about 22,000 polar bears would decrease by two thirds by the year 2050 . Her Southern heritage was not the only thing that influenced her though; often her Roman Catholic faith would impact her stories as well (Ellis 35 36). She described herself as a Catholic peculiarly possessed of the modern consciousness (qtd. in Hubbard 38) and stated that the best of [her] work sounded like the old testament would sound if it were being written today (qtd. in Kreyling 85). As such, O Conner is known for her portrayal of religious themes throughout her writings. In A Good Man is Hard to Find, Flannery O Conner utilizes violence in order to develop the grandmother s character within the story, and by doing so, she is able to demonstrate the difference between having a moral code and being virtuous. For clarity, a person with a moral code by no means has to be virtuous, for a moral code is simply a set of rules or a code of conduct which governs how an individual should act within a community (Pam). By following a moral code, a character is not necessarily morally good. We see this clearly in the grandmother. From the very beginning, it is made clear that the grandmother s perception of right and wrong is rather superficial; that is to say, she bases both her code of conduct and her perception of being good off of the opinions of others.
