New Zealanders Should Never Dream Of Being Cruel
New Zealanders would never dream of being cruel to an animal. After all animals are sentient beings.
Therefore they are capable of being aware of sensations and emotions of feeling pain and suffering. In
today s world, factory farming has become popular as they are cheaper ways to produce more output
efficiently. The industry strives to maximize output and revenue while minimising cost at the expense
of animals. The giant companies that run most of the factory farming have developed caging systems
which allow for greater animals to be living in small crammed space for greater profit and
output. These animals are deprived of exercise of that their body s energy contributes more towards
producing flesh, milk or egg. Drugs are fed and animals are being genetically altered to be grown fat
so they could keep them alive longer. We as humans, eat a lot of eggs. Just over 3 million eggs are
consumed by New Zealanders and the vast majority of these eggs are produced from factory farmed
eggs (Hibbard, 2014). The factory farmed hens are placed in small battery hen cages allowing space
similar to an A4 size sheet. These animals have their beaks trimmed to minimise feather pecking and
cannibalism in this overcrowded conditions. De beaking is an extremely painful process, which is
carried out with a guillotine type machine or chopped off with a hot knife machine that burns it off.
Due to this factory farmed animals are not able to display normal natural behaviours including moving

The Evolution of Reptiles
The evolution of reptiles, beginning with the direct common ancestor with mammals and birds, the
amniotes, to the major orders, families and species of today is well known due to the fairly complete
fossil record. The first fossilized amniotes discovered were dated to the early Pennsylvanian sub
period of the Carboniferous period, about 323 to 299 million years ago, in the stumps of the oldest
extant vascular plant division, the lycopods, in Nova Scotia. This unique mode of fossilization proves
the species was truly terrestrial (Carroll 1982). Based on both the fossils and the commonly shared
derived features, scientists know a great amount about the characteristics of the amniotes that separate
them from fish and amphibians. Amniotes were able to successfully reproduce without the necessity of
standing water, due to the amniotic egg with extra embryonic membranes. They also had an improved
morphological structure that allowed for enhanced locomotion and feeding, specifically the system of
receptors sensitive to tissue swelling located in both the axial and appendicular muscles, as well as the
increased size and greater efficiency of the jaw due to the diversification of the angles of the jaw
muscles (Carroll 1982). With these beneficial traits, amniotes dominated the terrestrial landscape.
From the amniotes, there are eight early reptilian groups recognized: pelycosaurs, mesosaurs,
pareiasaurs, millerosaurs, Protorothyridae, procoloponids, captorhinids, and the most

Introduction. The Goals Of The Organization Cannot Be...
Introduction The goals of the organization cannot be fulfilled without the skills or talent of the
employees and a direction to apply them. The employees will have goals, actions, and behaviors to
bring the company closer to the organization s vision. Moving forward requires direction so that new
and current employees stay on track. Appraising an employee may affect their base pay, promotional
status, and retention decisions. The employees who are found to have deficiencies may be identified
and corrected when their appraisal is interpreted. This can also reinforce the employees existing
strengths. A performance appraisal reviews an employee s career plans and identify any training
needed. Other components related to performance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those who may use the different methods to evaluate the employee s performance include the
immediate supervisor, peers, committees, anonymous subordinates, and a 360 degree feedback, which
is all or some of the personnel listed and others outside the organization the employee has direct
contact. The simplest method is the graphic rating scale. It lists several job dimensions or traits,
competencies, or specific goals, and a range of performance values like below expectations, above
average, and role model. The supervisor is the evaluator who then totals the rating for the overall
evaluation. For companies who have a number of employees to rate may elect to use the alternation
ranking method. During the process, the employees rated are in a list. The staff unknown is crossed
out. The dimensions are listed and the best performing employee is mentioned at the top and worst at
the bottom, then alternates to the last employee. Similar to the alternation method, is the paired
comparison method. Listing all the traits and employees, the rater puts a plus or negative next to the
employee who pairs with the trait. The employee with the most plus signs is the highest ranking. The
force distribution method may work for some larger companies that can afford to terminate lower
ranking employees while others would rather work to build those on the bottom percent up to a higher

The Truth About SARS Essay
The Truth About SARS
People in general are both fascinated and paranoid of the onset of new infectious diseases. While films
such as Outbreak are smash hits at the box office, when an actual disease becomes apparent people
often react with a kind of mass hysteria. Last year, a new illness reared its evil head. While the name
SARS has become fairly well known, the actual facts behind the illness are not as widely talked about.
SARS is an acronym for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. The illness usually first becomes
evident with a temperature above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, general malaise, and body aches. This
adds to the difficulty of identifying SARS; the general signs of the illness are so similar to more
common ailments ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Scientists have detected a previously unrecognized coronavirus in SARS patients, and this has become
the leading hypothesis for the cause of SARS. Coronaviruses are a group of viruses that, when viewed
under a powerful microscope, have a halo or crown like (hence corona) appearance. Viruses under
these headings are known to commonly cause mild to moderate upper respiratory illness in humans. In
animals, coronaviruses are associated with respiratory, gastrointestinal, liver, and neurological
diseases. Also, new ways to detect SARS have been discovered. Serologic testing for the SARS
syndrome can be performed using indirect fluorescent antibodies or enzyme linked immunosorbent
assays that are specific for the antibody that was produced after infection. A reverse transcriptase
polymerase chain reaction (known as RT PCR) test can also detect SARS in specimens such as serum,
stool, and nasal secretions. Also, viral cultures and isolation have been used to detect SARS lt; 1

While many conclusions have been drawn about SARS, such as its incubation period and symptoms,
the unknowns concerning the syndrome remain unsettling. The fear that people have concerning the
syndrome is not unwarranted. According to the World Health Organization, as of June 5, 2003, an
estimated 8,403 cases have been reported with a total of 775 deaths attributed to the syndrome lt; 2

Puppy Mill Speech
Puppies are amazing, special creatures that seem to be born with that unconditional unique quality of
love and loyalty for their humans. Depending on the prospective owner, dogs make the best of
companions, with the potential to love, cuddle and play.
Annually, there are more than 6 million puppies born throughout the United States alone. Similar to
the human newborn, puppies are born without teeth. They also cannot see, hear or smell. They gain
their senses typically between 9 and 12 days old and totally rely on mom during that time.
Not all puppies are lucky enough to have the best start in life, subjecting them to some of the most
horrendous conditions, especially those born and raised in puppy mills or puppy farms. If you have
your heart set on adding a new puppy to your home and family, consider nothing less than a reputable
breeder or shelter with healthy puppies.

Leadership in Invictus
The story of Invictus is based upon the life of Nelson Mandela during the time he held his Presidency
of South Africa. Specifically, the movie focuses on his ideas of managing the Springboks and how the
opportunity of using the country s Rugby team unfolds as a way to bring the country together. Since
The World Cup is being held in South Africa during the first year of his term, he sees The World Cup
as an attempt to bring the whites and blacks together by finding pride in their home team s victory.

He had a strong intelligence of dealing with others. He took into account their feelings as opposed to

transformational leader he was creative, interactive, visionary, empowering, and passionate. Together
using these five behaviors he was able to use his moral authority and inspired a nation to rise above its

He became the change he wanted to see from his followers. It was his plan to influence and then
convert his followers into the type of leader he was. Mandela did this by picking up the phone and

opportunity. The story depicted by the movie Invictus is just a glimpse at the many hearts that he
touched through his transformational leadership approach proved to be a success in the
accomplishment of his end goal of equal diversity amongst the citizens of South Africa. Mandela

Should High Schools Drop Football
Should High Schools Drop Football Because Too Many Players Are Getting Hurt? Friday night lights
is something to look forward to for many high school students and community members. Being a
varsity football cheerleader, I myself look forward to those nights, but, is playing for only one night a
week and 10 weeks out of the year, worth risking your life for? Some think of football as one of the
most harmful sports, considering all of the contact that is involved. With all of the things like
blockings, holdings, sacks, and tackles, it would be hard for one to deny that. Since many have started
to take these dangerous impacts that football may have on those who play into consideration, school
administrators began asking, Should high schools drop football because too many players are getting
hurt? Attempts to make changes to the roughness that comes along with playing football, trace all the
way back to the 1900 s. Before that time, football was considered rugby, which was even more
dangerous. In rugby, The results were predictable: smashed noses, dislocated shoulders, broken necks
and fractured skulls. Dozens of young men died, mostly from cerebral hemorrhage (Zimmerman 2),
which terrified many. Over time, the name rugby, eventually died out and later became known as

happened that fall from football, he called for a meeting with coaches from different colleges. The

Essay on Analysis of Tender Option Bonds
TOBs are synthetically created short term tax exempt instruments. A TOB sponsor will buy a portfolio
of fixed rate, long term municipal bonds with ratings between AAAAA and combine them with an
interest rate swap to create short term tax exempt floating rate bonds.
The tax exempt status creates a high level of demand particularly from investors who seek tax exempt
cash flow as a source of annual income and revenue. The buyers of TOBs are for the most part money
market mutual funds. Money market mutual funds are guided by certain regulations as to what type of
bonds they can have in their portfolio. Specifically, the underlying municipal bonds must be rated at
least AA . The maximum maturity of the municipal bonds is thirteen months and ... Show more

This is achieved by the investor bearing the default risk of the issuer on the underlying municipal
bond. Specifically, if the issuer of the underlying municipal bond defaults, the investor loses the right
to put the bonds to the liquidity bank and the liquidity facility is automatically reduced by the amount
of the bonds in default.
Interest Rate Swap
As indicated above, the sponsor (MLCS in Merrill s case) creates a TOB through the combination of a
long term municipal bond and an interest rate swap. The swap functions as a hedge to protect the
sponsor against the possibility of short term tax exempt rates increasing relative to the fixed coupons
on the underlying municipal bonds.
The sponsor enters into a swap where it pays a fixed rate which is below the coupon of the underlying
municipal bond (generally 100+bps under) and it receives a floating short term rate. The sponsor pays
out the floating short term rate from the swap to the TOB investors (plus an additional amount in the
range of 10bps). Out of the spread on the transaction (the difference between the fixed rate on the
municipal bond and the fixed rate on the swap, i.e.; the 100+bps noted above) the sponsor pays the
fees to the liquidity bank and the trustee. The balance after these expenses is paid out to the RITES
holders (historically about

Looking For Alaska Challenges
Challenges are a part of everyday life, and they change us in different and unexpected ways. The
theme challenges create change (within individuals) can be a pivotal part of a text. Characters and
people that face challenges have to change their ways of thinking, or even their lives in order to
overcome these challenges. The texts Carry On by Rainbow Rowell, Every Day by David Levithan,
Looking for Alaska by John Green and Not If I See You First by Eric Lindstrom all show how
challenges create change in not just one individual but multiple people throughout the texts.

In his book, A is a person that moves from body to body every day but never having a body or life of
their own. David Levithan shows us how the challenge of love creates change through Rhiannon and
A. It s as if when you love someone, they become your reason (pg 76). A lets this love define them,
risking other people s lives in order to be with the person they love, even though they know they
shouldn t I know I am not supposed to interfere (pg 127). This shows how A has changed, because,
before A met Rhiannon, they would never have strayed from the daily routine of another person s

I can never have these things (pg 302). They know that they will never be able to have their own

Why or why not? They might have different results, in being dependent on caregivers for support, and
society curbs various freedoms and when we are younger we have prestige, income employment and
management positions. The results of the research is the study found that the elderly are living longer
and by the year 2050 there will be more elders than youth. As previously indicated, one possible
explanation for why older people may have come to be less valued than in the past is because they do
not offer as much value in modernized societies because they have not kept up the changes because
they are used to their old ways. The research that North and Fiske accomplished showed enough
evidence that our elderly are an inconvenienced youth at this time but not forever. What kind of
outcomes supported this conclusion? The conclusion made by the authors is that society s treatment of
ageism should become prime research topic across multiple social sciences . They also

Importance Of Alcestis Silence For Athenian Women
Euripides further demonstrates that he is not a feminist by denying Alcestis of her agency at the end of
Alcestis. When Heracles brings Alcestis back after rescuing her from Death, she has lost the ability to
speak for three days (Alc. 1142 1146). This action denies Alcestis of her agency in several ways. First,
she was never able to actually finish dying to save her husband. By not being able to die, Alcestis
never fully carried out the action that was going to give her agency and honor as a perfect wife.
Secondly, Alcestis silence serves as a way to make her an obedient feminine wife. As Slater mentions,
by presenting Alcestis in this way, Euripides shows that the true glory of an Athenian woman is
silence (116). This creates a view ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While she had the ability to decide if she would be a wiling or unwilling victim, she had no choice in
the fact that she was going to die. This is because Euripides let male characters make the decision that
they would definitely sacrifice Iphigenia. As soon as Agamemnon found out that his daughter would
have to be sacrificed so the Greeks would do well in the war, many men became involved. These men
began to try and plot if they should sacrifice Iphigenia and if they were to go about saving her, how
they should do so. As Christina Sorum points out, Iphigenia perpetuates the patriotic theme introduced
by her father (541). Had Agamemnon never found out that it was prophesized that his daughter should
be sacrificed in order for the Greeks to be successful, Iphigenia would have never had the opportunity
to make the decision to willingly die. Without this decision, Iphigenia would have never been
presented with the opportunity to gain any

Capital punishmentā€™s validity in the legal system...
Capital punishment s validity in the legal system continues to be questioned but has been a huge part
in human society and the legal system for centuries to restrain dangerous criminals and crimes. Later
on, the death penalty as a punishment became a crime in itself, a crime against humanity thought by
many, because killing, is killing no matter what. And it is wrong. To this day the argument continues.
First of all, the death penalty seems somewhat barbaric and violates the cruel and unusual within the
meaning of the eighth Amendment. This kind of punishment also sends the wrong message for what is
trying to be accomplished: why kill people who kill people to show killing is wrong. Another kind of
punishment for criminals is life ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This method was affirmed by the Supreme Court as constitutional. Yes, this way may be much more
humane but it still doesn t change the fact that the U.S is killing someone and taking a life away.
Capital punishment violates the right to life, which is the most basic of human rights, undermining
human dignity that is inherent to every single human being no matter what crime was committed.
Death today is not how it was a long time ago. Do two wrongs make a right? A big argument dealing
with capital punishment is that when someone kills another person, does that give you the right to kill
that person. Yes murder is a serious crime, but how do we expect it to be looked down upon if it s
what we are doing to our criminals. Is it really up to us? To kill a person who has killed is a continued
cycle of violence. Expressing this doesn t make the crime go away, it contaminates the good and
shows that you must fight back. Capital punishment feeds the cycle of violence in society by
pandering to a lust for revenge. It brutalizes us and deadens our sensitivities to the precious nature of
every single human life. Most Rev. David B. Thompson, Bishop of Charleston, S.C., December, 1998.

Kate Chopin s The Awakening
Commonly explored throughout her works, the idea of marriage inhibiting a woman s freedom is the
driving force behind Kate Chopin s contextual objections to propriety. In particular, The Awakening
and The Story of an Hour explore the lives of women seeking marital liberation and individuality.
Mrs. Chopin, who was raised in a matriarchal household, expresses her opposition to the nineteenth
century patriarchal society while using her personal experiences to exemplify her feminist views.
Katherine O Flaherty, later Kate Chopin, was born to Eliza and Thomas O Flaherty in St. Louis,
Missouri on February 8, 1850 (Deter). Unfortunately, when Mrs. Chopin was four, her father died in a
train incident leaving her under the care of three independent widows her mother, grandmother, and
great grandmother (Deter). Mrs. Chopin s great grandmother, Victoria Verdon Charleville, directed her
education, giving her a taste of the culture and freedom allowed by the French that many Americans
during this time disapproved of . . . through the art of storytelling (Deter). Therefore, much of Mrs.
Chopin s success in writing about women pursuing morality, freedom, and political independence can
be attributed to Victoria. Furthermore, the teachers at the St. Louis Sacred Heart Academy, a school
Mrs. Chopin s father had previously enrolled her in, exposed her to Catholic teachings devoted to
creating good wives and mothers, while also teaching independent thinking ( Biography ).

Examples Of Maslow s Hierarchy Of Needs
Maslow s Hierarchy of needs places the need to belong on the third tier; being a desire that must be
met before completing the need of self actualization. Psychologist Abraham Maslow believed that it is
necessary that someone is accepted by others and if that requirement is not met that person can not
move on to be self fulfilled. Most individuals may meet their need of acceptance by conforming and
dismissing characteristics that make them who they are. To fit in some people go along with things
that they normally wouldn t: some people follow trends, fads, and popular opinions that they do not
even cherish. This is when the need for acceptance becomes out of control and even though they are
accepted by many those who change themselves to fit in may not meet the need of self actualization
because they do not know who they really are. There s this old saying that asks, If everyone jumps off
of a cliff, would you also . This meant that even though everyone is doing something doesn t mean its

Central Concerns In Antony And Cleopatra
The Central Concerns of the Antony and Cleopatra by William Shakespeare
This essay will look at two of the central concerns in Antony and Cleopatra, namely reason versus
passion and the public versus private domains. These two central concerns of the play are clearly
illustrated in the extract we are provided with. I will mainly focus on the character of Antony in this
essay as it is within him that these two concerns of the play are most evident.
In the beginning of the play we see that Mark Antony has been neglecting his duties as part of the
triumvirate of Rome as he has been staying with his mistress Cleopatra. His wife, Fulvia, dies and

She is thus reacting emotionally (out of fear) and is not behaving like a rational person. This is typical
of the way Antony behaves whilst he is in Egypt. Cleopatra and Antony are thus both passionate
people who live for the here and now (Guidelines, 1999:21).
From the opening scene of the play, we see public displays of the love that Antony and Cleopatra have
for each other. Antony even comments that:
Let Rome in Tiber melt, and the wide arch
Of the ranged empire fall! Here is my space. (1.1. 35 36)
These words show that Antony s political power often takes second place to his love for Cleopatra
(Bookrags, 2003). This also demonstrates how passionate and sensual Antony is when he is in Egypt
living for the here and now. Cleopatra s use of the words riotous madness (1.3.29) illustrates a crucial
feature of their relationship one that is without restraint, extremely passionate and keeps them from
knowing their true and better selves (Guidelines, 1999: 32).
One of the most central concerns of the play is illustrated above by the relationship between Cleopatra
and Antony; namely can the private be separated from the public and political domain? The political
versus private cannot be that clear cut however as these two domains interlink: The public affection
that Antony and Cleopatra display shows the world how they feel about each other and

Paraneoplastic Neurologic Syndrome (PNS)
Introduction
Paraneoplastic neurologic syndromes (PNS) are syndromes that result from dysfunction of the nervous
system, caused by a benign or malignant tumor via mechanisms other than direct tumor cell
infiltration, metastasis, coagulopathy, infection or any treatment side effects [1]. All parts of the
central and peripheral nervous system may be affected by PNS and, as a result, signs and symptoms
are diverse. Most PNS of the central nervous system have in common a subacute course leaving the
patients severely disabled in weeks to months and inflammatory changes in the CSF, including
moderate lymphocytic pleocytosis, increased protein levels and IgG index and presence of CSF
specific oligoclonal bands[2]. Early recognition may be difficult

Self-Images and Selfies
Self Image and Selfies: A Freudian Analysis
Chosen as Oxford dictionaries as the 2013 word of the year, the term selfie refers to a photograph that
one has taken of oneself, typically with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media
website . The term has made a definite mark on popular culture, the frequency usage increased over
17,000% in the 2012 2013 year (BBC News). With the rise in popularity there has also been much
discussion on the possible effects of the selfie phenomena. Some articles argue that taking a high
number of selfies is a sign of the increasing narcissism and self objectification of modern culture that
may lead to mental health issues such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Body Dysmorphic
Disorder. Others suggest that taking selfies empowers the individual and promotes healthy levels of
self esteem. While viewpoints on the topic tend to be diametrically divided, a Freudian perspective
provides support for both views, as the topic is more complex than it first seems.
In order to understand the interest in selfies, their ramifications, and to better apply a Freudian
perspective, it is important to first discuss the cultural prevalence and significance. Selfies are
widespread due to the ease of access of the technology. People everywhere, from the US President and
the Pope to astronauts in space to elementary school children have the ability to capture photos of
themselves and have been involved in selfies. The popularity of the practice is

Pygmalion by Bernard Shaw Essay
Pygmalion by Bernard Shaw The word benefit is defined as; a favourable or helpful factor or
circumstance . Many benefits are not immediately recognised, as they can be the result of something
bad. In the play Pygmalion , by Bernard Shaw, Liza gains many benefits, but also disadvantages from
her relationship with Higgins. Looking at benefits, she receives some beautiful clothes; I m to have
fashionable clothes (p. 63), a good place to stay and financial ease. She meets other friends such as
Freddy; I ll marry Freddy, I will (p. 131), and she has permanent companions. However, though she
has learned good speech with Higgins, she has not learnt manners, and is treated almost like an
animal. She is unhappy for a while, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She later marries Freddy, as shown in the epilogue, although towards the end of the play she is openly
declaring her love for Freddy; You are the loveliest, dearestĆ¢ā‚¬Ā¦ (p. 106). Finally, Eliza also gains a
benefit, which would not be immediately obvious, of learning about the upper class world. This is
definitely a benefit, as it will be useful to her in the future for her translations of other people s
behaviour. She has learnt how upper class people treat their inferiors; My betters that bully me and
don t want me (p. 129). This can often show the measure of people; depending on how they treat those
less fortunate than themselves. In contrast, Eliza also encounters a number of disadvantages working
with Higgins. Firstly, she was taught badly in the manners of upper class people, although she did
actually learn correctly through Colonel Pickering, such as; things about standing up, and taking off
your hat (p. 122). She decided that Higgins bad manners were his way (p. 122), as he behaved the
same to everyone. However, she was taught badly by him, as few upper class people would behave as
he did. Secondly, a disadvantage of her relationship with Higgins was Eliza s treatment. Higgins
treated her as nothing more than a servant when he was not teaching her phonetics, and using her to
win his bet. He simply treated her just the same

The Pros And Cons Of Lucid Dreaming
In 1911 the term, Lucid Dreaming was first used by a Dutch psychiatrist named Frederick Van Eden.
He described it as a person sleeping but taking on an active role. Lucid dreaming is actually defined as
a dream where the person dreaming is aware they re dreaming and have somewhat control over the
characters and narrators and their role in the dream. Over the course of this document the basics of
lucid dreaming and the knowledge we have of it will be covered, as well as the senses it effects and
how we perceive it.
Now for the most part everyone knows the five senses; sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. We all
have these, and our perception is how we react to these senses. Some people are more prone to senses
than others and that is what makes all of us unique. Now I know what you re thinking; How can you
have any of these senses in reality if you re dreaming? and that s a fair question. But lucid dreaming
isn t just dreaming it s taking control of your ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At this point of sleep your body is basically paralyzed except for your eyes. But when you lucid dream
you don t need to be able to move. Touch in fact doesn t play a factor at all in lucid dreaming, to be

more vivid idea of what lucid dreaming is or a scenario of a lucid dream would be, think or your
normal dreams, weird plots and the weird voids that makes it hard to describe. Now think of yourself
in that same dream, except in this dream you can fly or walk on water, you re capable of seeing the
ground or look up at the sky, as well as feel the wind or someone grabbing your hand, while also being
able to smell the freshly cut grass. Throughout this whole thing you are actually knowing that it s all
just a dream, but you have the power to control

Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon, A Jewish Scholar, Astrologer And...
Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon, commonly known as Maimonides or by the acronym RaMBaM, was a
Jewish scholar, astrologer and physician of the twelfth century considered to be one of Judaism s
greatest sages. His revolutionary publications were essential in the development of the Shulchan
Aruch, the practiced Code of Jewish Law and maintaining Jewish continuity throughout the ages.
Maimonides was born in 1135 in Cordoba, Spain to his mother and father, Rabbi Maimon, and would
go on to study medicine and philosophy in unison with his religious studies.
From a young age, Maimonides father mentored him in the teachings of the Talmud, Torah, Jewish
philosophy and secular sciences. His education in these areas would eventually fuel his writings. In
1148, when Maimonides was just 13, a Sunni Muslim Caliphate movement called the Almohades
invaded Southern Spain, and he and his family were forced to flee their hometown.
The Almohades invasion marked the end of the Golden Age of Jewish culture in Spain, where
although Jews were not fist class citizens, they lived free of persecution and were able to conduct
businesses and lead relatively peaceful lives. The Almohades invasion put great pressure on its Jewish
inhabitants, posing a serious threat to Jewish continuity. Many religious institutions dissolved,
including synagogues and yeshivas, and Sharia Law now dictated everyday life for Christians and
Jews of Spain. Non Muslims were given the choice to convert to Islam or die or else go

Samsung Electronics Products
According to Kotler and Armstrong (2012), product is defined as something that is offered to the
market for attention, acquisition, use or consumption that may satisfy a person s wants or needs.
Products can be physical goods like mobile phones, books or computers. It could be intangible goods
as well such as services, events, ideas, organizations or places. Kotler and Armstrong (2012) further
explained that products are the primary element in the overall market offering as it is the first step in
marketing mix planning, and that is to develop an offering that can create values to target market and
build profitable customer relationships. Samsung Electronics develops various of smartphones with
different features that are specifically catered for different groups of people. One of their well known
smartphones in the market is the Samsung Galaxy Note, Galaxy Note 3 being the newest release from
this line. The Samsung Galaxy Note is a tablet like phone, also common known as the phablet because
it has the functions of a smartphone and a tablet. It actually follows the footsteps of Dell s Streak,
which failed to create much attention and enthusiasms in the market (Kim 2013). But the Samsung
Galaxy Note line managed to break the skeptisms and prejudice of a phablet Galaxy Note 3 is

The Death of Print
ENG 122 404
27 February 2012
The Death of Print and the Drowning of Quality Writing Daniel Okrent has been in the publishing
industry his whole career. He is a published author and has served as an editor for Time, Life, and the
New York Times. In a 1999 lecture to students attending Columbia University s School of Journalism,
Okrent predicts, I believe they (news papers, magazines, and books), and all forms of print are dead
(Okrent 578). A little harsh, wouldn t you agree? But fear not, he then goes on to describe how even
though the death of print is inevitable, it really doesn t make a difference because it is the words,
sentences, and paragraphs in those forms of print that are important. Now, the majority of the reading I

they going to pay a subscription fee to the Wall Street Journal or go to Yahoo.com and where political
news is coupled on the same page as Eva Longoria s revealing dress, Lin sanity, and a story about a
baseball player s new nose job (all actual headlines on Yahoo s homepage)? Imagine reading a book
and every other page being something completely irrelevant to the book itself. Imagine a tablet, maybe
half an inch thick, shaped when held one way like an open book or magazine, when turned sideways
much like a single page of a newspaper. It weighs six ounces. It s somewhat flexible, which makes it
easy to transport. Its screen, utterly glare free, neither flickers nor fades nor grows dull (Okrent 579).
This is a description of a tablet Okrent saw back in 1999. That doesn t seem too far off from what s
available today. Actually, it sounds a little better. Okrent later makes a good comparison in the format
in which cell phones are sold today and how tablets may be similarly sold in the future. He argues it s
less about the vessel and more about the content in which they wish to sell you on that vessel. As cell
phone companies do when

Nike Promise And Peril Of Globalization Summary
The Promise and Peril of Globalization: The case of Nike. Nike was started in 1964 as a sportswear
company dealing with shoes but later diversified to start the production of other sports wares such as
clothes and balls and other sporting equipment. Nike has since become a household name and is
present in all continents. Growth. Nike started by importing sporting shoes from cheaper producing
countries, and selling them in the USA and thus providing the market with cheaper, quality products in
comparison to the expensive home product of other companies. With this strategy, Nike was able to
capture a good market share. This growth made the company start designing their products, and
contracting manufacturers from countries with cheaper labour to produce for them while the company
maintained a quality check from the producing factory. This expansion began with contracting
companies in Japan where they were importing from, but when production started to become
expensive, Nike started to look for other options and contracted companies from Korea, China,
Taiwan, and Thailand to start producing for them. It s in this expansion that we start to see the effect
of Globalization come to play and issues that affected the good performance of Nike, though some of

Human Trafficking And The Trafficking
Human Smuggling and trafficking continues to be a worldwide plague that has been, thus far been
largely ignored by the international community. The paramount reason human trafficking and
smuggling has festered and grown roots and spread globally. It started as a grassroots effort on the
local level where women and girls (it affects boys as well) would be used and sold for sex. Eventually,
greed and corruption tagged along for the ride and at that point the crimes became an organized
enterprise. At that point the crimes grew exponentially and spread worldwide and infested every
crevice and nook on earth, no matter how small and insignificant it may. A stellar example of this the
systematic rape, torture and killing of women of Yazidi Christian women in Iraq and the other region
of the Middle East. The ideology behind ISIS would be jihad and anti Western propaganda, however,
whether the motivation be money, drugs, or as in human smuggling, illegal immigration, the world at
large must annihilate it.
Human smuggling and human trafficking are two distinct crimes that, the further down the food chain
each go, the lines do get murky and tend to melt together. Law enforcement from around the world
have often thrown up their hands at the crimes because of the web of complexities involved. The law
enforcement community at times have plum run out of resources and manpower to devote to the
crimes. Human smuggling differs from human trafficking in as it requires payment, consent, as well

Neutral Subscale Research
To properly understand the research question frame, we must explore the instrument in general and the
methodological critiques that led to the short form used in this study. Also of note is the research
focusing solely on the masculine and feminine subscales to the exclusion of the social desirability
scale. We will briefly explore specific BSRI applications with respect to variables other than gender
(e.g. race ethnicity). We will proceed with a literature review specifically focused on neutral subscale
research and use.
BSRI Development Background and the Social Desirability Scale Bem (1974) developed the Bem Sex
Role Inventory to measure three constructs: Masculinity, Femininity, and Androgyny. The original
form consisted of 60 items divided into three subscales that measured a person s masculinity,
femininity, and a social desirability scale. The social desirability scale items were judged as neutral

Twenge (1997) suggested that scores on the masculine subscale, and the feminine subscale to a lesser
degree, have rose over time with respect to gender. The rise was attributed to effects from culture and
environmental factors leading women to identify with more masculine personality traits (Twenge,
1997). Auster and Ohm (2000) explored the measures in a contemporary American setting to assess
score validity since the original BSRI was introduced 25 years earlier. The findings suggested that
there was little change in validity for feminine scores but a significant change in the masculine
constructs between the 1972 population and the 1999 population. Additionally, in the intervening 25
years, mean scores for masculine items rose while mean scores for feminine items fell (Auster Ohm,
2000). As with most BSRI studies, scores were provided for the masculine and feminine items, yet
social desirability scores were

My Experience At The Art Department
Everyone has a passion in life mine is art. Not going to galleries and looking at paintings by artists

thousand words which is very true but in my case a painting shows a thousand emotions.
I ve never hated school but I ve always loved being in the art department. All the different
possibilities, the different sizes of paper. It is somewhere that I feel as if I am me and nothing will ever

It gives me a chance to make something which is mine, it may never become a colour used by millions
each day but it has a purpose to me and my work, it is something that I can add to my work that relates
to me and my emotions. In art there are seven visual elements texture, tone, line, shape, form, pattern
and colour and in second year when I was first introduced to these, they never really made sense. Now
it all makes complete sense, as when I m drawing I enter another world and I use these elements all
the time. The different patterns in a piece, the dark and light tones it just makes my work mine. I can
tell how I felt that day from how dark piece is, the simple dark shading can convey tonnes of different
emotions. Art is a part of my life that I use and think about everyday. It is something which I can just
escape into, leaving the world behind me.
Art is a way where I can be right no matter what anyone else thinks. Throughout school I have fell out
with my friends, argued, and had some difficult times. Rather than shouting and screaming about my
problematic life, I picked a paint brush up. Two years ago I fallen out with most of my friends I then
had became too scared to come to school and face people. I had transformed into a hedgehog in
hibernation. When I found the courage to come to school, it had turned into me hiding in the art

The Assassination Of Jfk By Lee Harvey Oswald
The shot seen across the country. The assassination of JFK still stands today as one of the most
shocking events in American history. Its had a larger impact because of the fact that it was on national
television and because of its graphic nature. Since we will never know the true motive of Lee Harvey
Oswald, the only thing that we could do is make our own assumptions. That is what we ve done,
which have only made things more difficult for us to grasp and have created more conspiracy theories.
I will get into the immediate effects that his actions caused such as the Warren Commission and what
the report said and did. Mystery still surrounds this whole event because he was killed before he could
even go on trial for his murders. That s also what ties in Jack Ruby to a conspiracy because killing
Oswald, made it look like he was trying to hide something. This event has a lot of moving parts,
especially with all of the different conspiracy theories. I wasn t all that familiar with the details of the
assassination, but after gathering all of the information and reading about all the conspiracy theories,
they all seem to be real possibilities. All of the theories do seem a little far fetched, but they all have
some good evidence to support it. All I can say is that learning about this assassination has certainly
made me think. I will explain who John F. Kennedy was, what he stood for, and what he accomplished
during his presidency. Also about Lee Harvey Oswald and what could have

How Did The Bulgars Build The Byzantine Empire
The Byzantine Empire had shrunk considerably due to earlier invasions and plundering by groups
such as Bulgars, Slavs, and Avars. The Bulgars marched on Bulgaria sometime in 670s. They defeated
the Byzantine troops in 681 forcing the Byzantine ruler to acknowledge their new nation. Avar and
Slavs changed the Balkans when they integrated with the locals and imposed their language and
religious cults. They took control of the Balkans away from Byzantine rule and severed trade and
travel between Constantinople and the settlements on the Dalmatian coast. Under constant attacks by
invaders, the already shrunken empire saw many of its towns destroyed, obliterated or changed. The
once bustling open markets, town squares, and theatres were no more.

Treatments that are associated with iron deficiency anemia depends on what s causing your anemia. If
anemia is caused from losing too much blood, your doctor will need to treat the cause of the blood
loss. If anemia results from your diet being too low in iron, the doctor may recommend a change in
your diet or iron pills. Managing the condition that is causing the anemia is the most important part of
treating it. If anemia is very bad, you might get shots of erythropoietin to help your bone marrow
make more red blood cells.

The s Insane And Drug Centered Novel
In Irvine Welsh s insane and drug centered novel Trainspotting a standout amongst the most obvious
yet disputable topics is the friendship between the main characters. This group of character are seen to
be friends by us the readers but the question often raised is are they really friends or are they just
together because each one has a fucked up life and it is together that they do not feel alone or so
terrible? We the audience see this come to a climax as the edginess of their drug addiction worsens.
The novel Trainspotting is a story of dependence and disloyalty and for characters in the novel life is
essentially centered around where the following fix will come from. The story is set in the gloomy
ghettos of Edinburgh, Scotland ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though the character Begbie doesn t do the hard drug like his peers he is still a heavy drinker and
views himself as decent compared to his heroin addicted companions. But still he does not realize the
very negative impacts of the liquor on his own well being in the same way the others in the novel are
unconscious of the impacts of heroin on theirs. Begbie takes extraordinary delight in the novel in
utilizing physical brutality to beat up others. This is demonstrated when Begbie uses the reason of his
sibling being cut in a pub in Niddrie to begin another fight in a pub in Leith. ( Blackwell, Bonnie.) In
spite of the fact that Renton is mindful of Begbie s psychopathic nature and knows very well indeed
that he uses even the slightest of any reason to start a fight, he still tends to Hang around him and it is
obvious that this is because he just needs company. In spite of the fact that as opposed to supporting
his companion, he needed to have nothing to do with him, this appears justifiable in the circumstances.
I definitely don t see why anybody would need to be connected with somebody of such nature, and
again demonstrates that it isn t a genuine companionship and they are simply utilizing every others
company to not feel alone like the famous saying by William Shakespeare misery loves company .
Welsh s very agonistic writing in my opinion compares the friendship to Begbie to that of Rentons
relationship with heroin, and

Analysis Of The Book Win Friends And Influence People
How to Win Friends and Influence People delivers an in depth and holistic perspective on human
relationships. The premise of the novel is essentially building relationships and its aim is to help the
reader accomplish exactly what is stated in the title; win friends and influence people. Written by Dale
Carnegie and first published in 1937, the novel was a product of the Dale Carnegie Course in Effective
Speaking. His courses were so popular, publishers realized that people skills are a prized commodity
to people from all walks of life and there would be a huge market for a manual in developing this
skillset. Credited as one of the first best selling self help books ever published, this novel has served as
an exceptional resource to generations of people around the world. The longevity and relevance of the
novel is a testament to the consistency of human relations. The book was slightly revised for its later
publications so some original features have been omitted, I will be reviewing its recent 2005
publication.
What is so unique and impressive about the book is that it s written in a manner that effectively breaks
down exactly how the reader should behave and the characteristics the reader should convey. Carnegie
presents techniques on how to deal with people in your everyday life and how to carry yourself in
what seems like a high pressure situation. The organization of How to Win Friends and Influence
People allows the reader to easily follow the skills and techniques

Extended Warranty Expirations
A manufacturer s warranty barely last a year on new vehicles. Extended warranties keep your car
covered for a few more years after the manufacturer s warranty expires. So much skepticism
surrounds extended warranties, and we don t know what to believe. Here are five types of stereotypes
we place on warranties and how untrue it is.
The product breaks down after the warranty expires: We believe extended warranties are a waste of
time because the product will function until the warranty expires, then it breaks down. Can you
explain those times where it breaks down before the warranty expires? Extended warranties are for
those moments, and it does occur often. Companies who do this rarely stay in business because
perceptive customers will

Ordinary People Extraordinary Evil
Phil Zimbardo said in his TEDx talk Where there is good there is bad .There is no such thing called
utopia; we are not living in a perfect world that is full of angels. Bad people exist as evil is a complex
subject that many consider intolerable, which is around us and everywhere since the start of time.
However, some people never realize it is there, because they don t even know what it is and why is it
present. Basically, it is the precise definition of a behaviour that pushes individuals to not care for
others and adopt a detrimental manner. Fred E.Katz mentioned out in his book Ordinary People and
Extraordinary Evil that It focuses on how people behave toward one another where the behaviour of
one person, or an aggregate of persons, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But what is practical is that we must admit that villainy isn t born, it just starts from normal people
actions, as they are easily attracted to it. Fred E.Katz once stated in his book Ordinary People and
Extraordinary Evil The vast majority of killings were actually carried out by plain folk in the
population ordinary people (10) Throughout history we will find that most of the crimes are done by
ordinary people under someone s control to achieve his goals. Therefore, leaders also take a part in
producing evil as Fred E.Katz said in his book Ordinary People and Extraordinary Evil Does not the
responsibility for evil rest with leaders who manipulate their people to do their biddings? (Katz 11).
Furthermore, it is very easy for anybody to be tempted by evil as Phil Zimbardo said in one of his

line . Social , biological and psychological reasons could urge anyone to produce

Due To The Extensive Amount Of Harm That Photo Manipulation
Due to the extensive amount of harm that photo manipulation causes, it is an ethical issue. Digital
photo manipulation in women causes widespread harm, long lasting damage to women s self esteem
and other negative psychological thought processes. Research has also found that it causes a large
number of eating disorders. It does this by making women chase the ideal, thin body image that is
being portrayed in the different pictures and advertisements. There was a study done that examined
both the thin ideal and body classification. Results from this showed that viewing the thin ideal lead to
a higher level of body dissatisfaction (Whyte, Newman, Voss, 2016). Thereby this issue diminishes the

A false idea of what one actually looks like is being portrayed within the photograph. They are
providing the viewers with an inaccurate and unreliable picture. It is also important to know who the
parties involved in this issue are. The company that decides to alter the image is first handedly
involved in this matter. The model that is posing for the shot, which in this case are the women that
are being altered, are also involved. Lastly, the viewers of the photograph, which includes all of
society and their target audience of females are involved as well.
Knowing the relevant laws when analyzing this issue is crucial as well. Given that the First
Amendment grants people with the freedom of speech, these companies are allowed freedom of press
as well. This allows the companies to do what they want with the images they have. They are allowed
to advertise for their company however they choose, regardless of outside opinions on their methods.
They can send whatever message, whether indirect or not to their audience without any restrictions.
However there are some company policies that these businesses try to follow. First and foremost they
try to market however they think will get them or their product the most attention. They do this at the
cost of unethical photo manipulation. Some different companies such as Dove and Aerie have spoken
out against this issue and have started campaigns of their own in response to it. The

Kosovo Police Brutality
The fact is that, for both Albanian and Serb nationalism, Kosovo serves as a myth, a historical
narration, and a national symbol of special religious, cultural and political importance (Baliqi, 2015:
295). Nevertheless, the conflict started to warm up when Milosevic began to infringe upon the
fundamental rights of the ethnic Albanians and then later limit their access to institutions. The Special
Rapporteurs of the Commission on Human Rights of the former Yugoslavia until 1995, among many
others, found these rights to have been violated:
1. Police brutality against ethnic Albanians, such as arbitrary searches, seizures and arrests, forced
evictions, torture and ill treatments of detainees;
2. Discriminatory and arbitrary dismissals of ethnic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Subsequently, in late 1997, the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), made its appearance and conducted
several hit and run insurgencies. This gave the green light to Serbia now to issue forces in Kosovo and
maintain the country inside its borders. The internal situation entirely escalated when forces in search
of KLA men went to the KLA leader s house, Adem Jashari, and massacred 58 people among them
women and children (Independent International Commission on Kosovo, 2000; 3). By the end of the
war, forces had destroyed villages, expelled 800,000 ethnic Albanians and killed over 4,000 people
(HRW, 2001: 4 7). Here as well, the international community started to see what could be negotiated
with Milosevic. The international powers composed of the United States, the United Kingdom,
France, Italy, Germany, and Russia indeed were facing legal and moral dilemmas. Meanwhile the talks
were going on, the Serbian forces in Kosovo was conducting massacres, and it has been noted that one
of their anthems was a massacre per day keeps NATO away (Power, 2007: 447). Negotiations were
taking place in Rembouillet, known as the Rembouillet talks, where little was achieved, since

Symbols To Help Children To Expose Children At An Early Age
Expose children at an early age to reading environments in order to help them understand that books
are symbols that can have meaning and can be read.
At first, a young child could probably see a book as one more of his toys but as he or her are
continually exposed to reading they will learn to turn pages by themselves and later they will pretend
to read a book and make vocal sounds when reading a book.
When parents read to their children, children have the opportunity to see a variety of things that are
new to them children but others have meaning to them or they just recognize them.
When children have been exposed to reading, Children have the opportunity to learn rhythms, letter s
sound, phonemic awareness that will help them to develop reading skills.
Children and parents can be members of a reading group where they can learn new reading strategies,
social emotional skills, friendship, and network new resources that can help them to grow
academically and cognitively. Through books toddlers learn to recognize their emotions and they
imitate how to solve their problems.
Books help children to develop their imagination.
Reading books to children help them to give names for people, things, and words for actions.
Through reading, children develop listening skills. They enrich their vocabulary. They are exposed to
different places, times, animals, letters, colors, shapes, and they mirror themselves seeing images
similar or equal to them. And so on.

Adventures of Death Valley National Park
This summer, Alice decided that she was going to go to Death Valley National Park in California.
There was only one problem. When Alice asked her parents if she could go, they said no. Alice could
only go if she could find at least two friends to go with her. Alice asked her two best friends, Lea and
Rachel. They said yes! Alice was so excited, This is going to be the best summer ever!
The three girls met up together at Alice s house to discuss what they were going to need to pack. What
is the weather like so I know what to pack, Rachel questioned Alice? Well, since the climate is arid
and hot, with dry air masses trapped in the valley because there are mountains on both sides, you
would probably need shorts and a tank top to keep cool. Probably, you will need shorts, tank tops,
hiking shoes, sunscreen, and sunglasses, Alice replied. A hat too, Lea inquired? Alice answered, Yes.
Alice s friends didn t really know what Death Valley was or why it was called Death Valley so she
gave a little detail about it. Death Valley is the lowest point on the contiguous U.S, which is 282 feet
below sea level. Death Valley is located near the highest point on the contiguous U.S., which is about
76 miles away. On February 11, 1933, President Herbert Hoover made Death Valley a national
monument and in 1944 Death Valley was re designated as a national park, Alice told the girls. After
the girls finished packing, they went to sleep and the next day, they drove to

The Apostles and the Early Church
The Apostles and the Early Church
J.Trimble
GBST 164
In the Gospel of Matthew the term apostles is only used when introducing the list of twelve apostles
commissioned to follow Christ. Now the names of the twelve Apostles are these: the first, Simon who
is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip, and
Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alpheus, and Lebbeus, whose
surname was Thaddeus; Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him (Matthew
10:1 4). An apostle is a person sent to accomplish a mission. An apostle represents the one sending
and has authority to represent the sender in business, political, or educational situations (T. ... Show

Gigot). The change of Simon s name by Jesus was significant. As in the case of Abram, Sarai and
Jacob, the change of destiny is indicated by the change of name. This name Cephas is taken from the
Aramaic vernacular and corresponds to the Greek Peter, Petros, which means a piece of rock a mass of
rock detached from the living rock (T. Butler). It is a term which becomes a natural emblem of
firmness and stability. It may be hard for us to see the fitness of such a name for a man apparently so
unstable; but the fitness was perceived by Christ. Peter wavered often, even while under his Master s
eye, and at least once afterward, but he continually became more and more like the rock that Christ
wanted him to be and he was indeed a pillar of the church (W.B. Hill).
We observe that all the time Christ was with the Twelve, Peter was a leader among them.
Occasionally, Christ would select certain ones for special responsibilities; for example: Peter, James
and John to witness the raising of Jarius daughter, the transfiguration, and the agony in the garden (G.
Stokes). Now, why were these particular men selected on these occasions to be the recipients of
special privileges and the bearers of the attendant responsibilities? Certainly not because they
possessed greater authority than the other apostles, but because here

  • 2. New Zealanders Should Never Dream Of Being Cruel New Zealanders would never dream of being cruel to an animal. After all animals are sentient beings. Therefore they are capable of being aware of sensations and emotions of feeling pain and suffering. In today s world, factory farming has become popular as they are cheaper ways to produce more output efficiently. The industry strives to maximize output and revenue while minimising cost at the expense of animals. The giant companies that run most of the factory farming have developed caging systems which allow for greater animals to be living in small crammed space for greater profit and output. These animals are deprived of exercise of that their body s energy contributes more towards producing flesh, milk or egg. Drugs are fed and animals are being genetically altered to be grown fat so they could keep them alive longer. We as humans, eat a lot of eggs. Just over 3 million eggs are consumed by New Zealanders and the vast majority of these eggs are produced from factory farmed eggs (Hibbard, 2014). The factory farmed hens are placed in small battery hen cages allowing space similar to an A4 size sheet. These animals have their beaks trimmed to minimise feather pecking and cannibalism in this overcrowded conditions. De beaking is an extremely painful process, which is carried out with a guillotine type machine or chopped off with a hot knife machine that burns it off. Due to this factory farmed animals are not able to display normal natural behaviours including moving ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Evolution of Reptiles The evolution of reptiles, beginning with the direct common ancestor with mammals and birds, the amniotes, to the major orders, families and species of today is well known due to the fairly complete fossil record. The first fossilized amniotes discovered were dated to the early Pennsylvanian sub period of the Carboniferous period, about 323 to 299 million years ago, in the stumps of the oldest extant vascular plant division, the lycopods, in Nova Scotia. This unique mode of fossilization proves the species was truly terrestrial (Carroll 1982). Based on both the fossils and the commonly shared derived features, scientists know a great amount about the characteristics of the amniotes that separate them from fish and amphibians. Amniotes were able to successfully reproduce without the necessity of standing water, due to the amniotic egg with extra embryonic membranes. They also had an improved morphological structure that allowed for enhanced locomotion and feeding, specifically the system of receptors sensitive to tissue swelling located in both the axial and appendicular muscles, as well as the increased size and greater efficiency of the jaw due to the diversification of the angles of the jaw muscles (Carroll 1982). With these beneficial traits, amniotes dominated the terrestrial landscape. From the amniotes, there are eight early reptilian groups recognized: pelycosaurs, mesosaurs, pareiasaurs, millerosaurs, Protorothyridae, procoloponids, captorhinids, and the most ... Introduction The goals of the organization cannot be fulfilled without the skills or talent of the employees and a direction to apply them. The employees will have goals, actions, and behaviors to bring the company closer to the organization s vision. Moving forward requires direction so that new and current employees stay on track. Appraising an employee may affect their base pay, promotional status, and retention decisions. The employees who are found to have deficiencies may be identified and corrected when their appraisal is interpreted. This can also reinforce the employees existing strengths. Those who may use the different methods to evaluate the employee s performance include the immediate supervisor, peers, committees, anonymous subordinates, and a 360 degree feedback, which is all or some of the personnel listed and others outside the organization the employee has direct contact. The simplest method is the graphic rating scale. It lists several job dimensions or traits, competencies, or specific goals, and a range of performance values like below expectations, above average, and role model. The supervisor is the evaluator who then totals the rating for the overall evaluation. For companies who have a number of employees to rate may elect to use the alternation ranking method. During the process, the employees rated are in a list. The staff unknown is crossed out. The dimensions are listed and the best performing employee is mentioned at the top and worst at the bottom, then alternates to the last employee. Similar to the alternation method, is the paired comparison method. Listing all the traits and employees, the rater puts a plus or negative next to the employee who pairs with the trait. The employee with the most plus signs is the highest ranking. The force distribution method may work for some larger companies that can afford to terminate lower ranking employees while others would rather work to build those on the bottom percent up to a higher rate on the ... • 6. The Truth About SARS Essay The Truth About SARS People in general are both fascinated and paranoid of the onset of new infectious diseases. While films such as Outbreak are smash hits at the box office, when an actual disease becomes apparent people often react with a kind of mass hysteria. Last year, a new illness reared its evil head. While the name SARS has become fairly well known, the actual facts behind the illness are not as widely talked about. SARS is an acronym for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. The illness usually first becomes evident with a temperature above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, general malaise, and body aches. Scientists have detected a previously unrecognized coronavirus in SARS patients, and this has become the leading hypothesis for the cause of SARS. Coronaviruses are a group of viruses that, when viewed under a powerful microscope, have a halo or crown like (hence corona) appearance. Viruses under these headings are known to commonly cause mild to moderate upper respiratory illness in humans. In animals, coronaviruses are associated with respiratory, gastrointestinal, liver, and neurological diseases. Also, new ways to detect SARS have been discovered. Serologic testing for the SARS syndrome can be performed using indirect fluorescent antibodies or enzyme linked immunosorbent assays that are specific for the antibody that was produced after infection. A reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (known as RT PCR) test can also detect SARS in specimens such as serum, stool, and nasal secretions. Also, viral cultures and isolation have been used to detect SARS lt; 1 1)yahoo.com. Depending on the prospective owner, dogs make the best of companions, with the potential to love, cuddle and play. Annually, there are more than 6 million puppies born throughout the United States alone. Similar to the human newborn, puppies are born without teeth. They also cannot see, hear or smell. Friday night lights is something to look forward to for many high school students and community members. Being a varsity football cheerleader, I myself look forward to those nights, but, is playing for only one night a week and 10 weeks out of the year, worth risking your life for? Some think of football as one of the most harmful sports, considering all of the contact that is involved. With all of the things like blockings, holdings, sacks, and tackles, it would be hard for one to deny that. Since many have started to take these dangerous impacts that football may have on those who play into consideration, school administrators began asking, Should high schools drop football because too many players are getting hurt? Attempts to make changes to the roughness that comes along with playing football, trace all the way back to the 1900 s. Before that time, football was considered rugby, which was even more dangerous. In rugby, The results were predictable: smashed noses, dislocated shoulders, broken necks and fractured skulls. Dozens of young men died, mostly from cerebral hemorrhage (Zimmerman 2), which terrified many. Over time, the name rugby, eventually died out and later became known as football. A TOB sponsor will buy a portfolio of fixed rate, long term municipal bonds with ratings between AAAAA and combine them with an interest rate swap to create short term tax exempt floating rate bonds. The tax exempt status creates a high level of demand particularly from investors who seek tax exempt cash flow as a source of annual income and revenue. The buyers of TOBs are for the most part money market mutual funds. Money market mutual funds are guided by certain regulations as to what type of bonds they can have in their portfolio. This is achieved by the investor bearing the default risk of the issuer on the underlying municipal bond. Specifically, if the issuer of the underlying municipal bond defaults, the investor loses the right to put the bonds to the liquidity bank and the liquidity facility is automatically reduced by the amount of the bonds in default. Interest Rate Swap As indicated above, the sponsor (MLCS in Merrill s case) creates a TOB through the combination of a long term municipal bond and an interest rate swap. The swap functions as a hedge to protect the sponsor against the possibility of short term tax exempt rates increasing relative to the fixed coupons on the underlying municipal bonds. The sponsor enters into a swap where it pays a fixed rate which is below the coupon of the underlying municipal bond (generally 100+bps under) and it receives a floating short term rate. The sponsor pays out the floating short term rate from the swap to the TOB investors (plus an additional amount in the range of 10bps). Out of the spread on the transaction (the difference between the fixed rate on the municipal bond and the fixed rate on the swap, i.e.; the 100+bps noted above) the sponsor pays the fees to the liquidity bank and the trustee. A lets this love define them, risking other people s lives in order to be with the person they love, even though they know they shouldn t I know I am not supposed to interfere (pg 127). • 14. Importance Of Alcestis Silence For Athenian Women Euripides further demonstrates that he is not a feminist by denying Alcestis of her agency at the end of Alcestis. When Heracles brings Alcestis back after rescuing her from Death, she has lost the ability to speak for three days (Alc. 1142 1146). This action denies Alcestis of her agency in several ways. First, she was never able to actually finish dying to save her husband. By not being able to die, Alcestis never fully carried out the action that was going to give her agency and honor as a perfect wife. Secondly, Alcestis silence serves as a way to make her an obedient feminine wife. As Slater mentions, by presenting Alcestis in this way, Euripides shows that the true glory of an Athenian woman is silence (116). This creates a view ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While she had the ability to decide if she would be a wiling or unwilling victim, she had no choice in the fact that she was going to die. This is because Euripides let male characters make the decision that they would definitely sacrifice Iphigenia. As soon as Agamemnon found out that his daughter would have to be sacrificed so the Greeks would do well in the war, many men became involved. These men began to try and plot if they should sacrifice Iphigenia and if they were to go about saving her, how they should do so. As Christina Sorum points out, Iphigenia perpetuates the patriotic theme introduced by her father (541). Had Agamemnon never found out that it was prophesized that his daughter should be sacrificed in order for the Greeks to be successful, Iphigenia would have never had the opportunity to make the decision to willingly die. Capital punishment s validity in the legal system continues to be questioned but has been a huge part in human society and the legal system for centuries to restrain dangerous criminals and crimes. Later on, the death penalty as a punishment became a crime in itself, a crime against humanity thought by many, because killing, is killing no matter what. And it is wrong. To this day the argument continues. First of all, the death penalty seems somewhat barbaric and violates the cruel and unusual within the meaning of the eighth Amendment. This kind of punishment also sends the wrong message for what is trying to be accomplished: why kill people who kill people to show killing is wrong. Yes, this way may be much more humane but it still doesn t change the fact that the U.S is killing someone and taking a life away. Capital punishment violates the right to life, which is the most basic of human rights, undermining human dignity that is inherent to every single human being no matter what crime was committed. Death today is not how it was a long time ago. Do two wrongs make a right? A big argument dealing with capital punishment is that when someone kills another person, does that give you the right to kill that person. Yes murder is a serious crime, but how do we expect it to be looked down upon if it s what we are doing to our criminals. Is it really up to us? To kill a person who has killed is a continued cycle of violence. Expressing this doesn t make the crime go away, it contaminates the good and shows that you must fight back. Capital punishment feeds the cycle of violence in society by pandering to a lust for revenge. It brutalizes us and deadens our sensitivities to the precious nature of every single human life. Kate Chopin s The Awakening Commonly explored throughout her works, the idea of marriage inhibiting a woman s freedom is the driving force behind Kate Chopin s contextual objections to propriety. In particular, The Awakening and The Story of an Hour explore the lives of women seeking marital liberation and individuality. Mrs. Chopin, who was raised in a matriarchal household, expresses her opposition to the nineteenth century patriarchal society while using her personal experiences to exemplify her feminist views. Katherine O Flaherty, later Kate Chopin, was born to Eliza and Thomas O Flaherty in St. Louis, Missouri on February 8, 1850 (Deter). Unfortunately, when Mrs. Chopin was four, her father died in a train incident leaving her under the care of three independent widows her mother, grandmother, and great grandmother (Deter). Mrs. Chopin s great grandmother, Victoria Verdon Charleville, directed her education, giving her a taste of the culture and freedom allowed by the French that many Americans during this time disapproved of . . . through the art of storytelling (Deter). Therefore, much of Mrs. Chopin s success in writing about women pursuing morality, freedom, and political independence can be attributed to Victoria. Furthermore, the teachers at the St. Louis Sacred Heart Academy, a school Mrs. Chopin s father had previously enrolled her in, exposed her to Catholic teachings devoted to creating good wives and mothers, while also teaching independent thinking ( Biography ). ... • 18. Examples Of Maslow s Hierarchy Of Needs Maslow s Hierarchy of needs places the need to belong on the third tier; being a desire that must be met before completing the need of self actualization. Psychologist Abraham Maslow believed that it is necessary that someone is accepted by others and if that requirement is not met that person can not move on to be self fulfilled. Most individuals may meet their need of acceptance by conforming and dismissing characteristics that make them who they are. To fit in some people go along with things that they normally wouldn t: some people follow trends, fads, and popular opinions that they do not even cherish. This is when the need for acceptance becomes out of control and even though they are accepted by many those who change themselves to fit in may not meet the need of self actualization because they do not know who they really are. • 19. Central Concerns In Antony And Cleopatra The Central Concerns of the Antony and Cleopatra by William Shakespeare This essay will look at two of the central concerns in Antony and Cleopatra, namely reason versus passion and the public versus private domains. These two central concerns of the play are clearly illustrated in the extract we are provided with. I will mainly focus on the character of Antony in this essay as it is within him that these two concerns of the play are most evident. In the beginning of the play we see that Mark Antony has been neglecting his duties as part of the triumvirate of Rome as he has been staying with his mistress Cleopatra. She is thus reacting emotionally (out of fear) and is not behaving like a rational person. This is typical of the way Antony behaves whilst he is in Egypt. Cleopatra and Antony are thus both passionate people who live for the here and now (Guidelines, 1999:21). From the opening scene of the play, we see public displays of the love that Antony and Cleopatra have for each other. Antony even comments that: Let Rome in Tiber melt, and the wide arch Of the ranged empire fall! Here is my space. (1.1. 35 36) These words show that Antony s political power often takes second place to his love for Cleopatra (Bookrags, 2003). This also demonstrates how passionate and sensual Antony is when he is in Egypt living for the here and now. Cleopatra s use of the words riotous madness (1.3.29) illustrates a crucial feature of their relationship one that is without restraint, extremely passionate and keeps them from knowing their true and better selves (Guidelines, 1999: 32). One of the most central concerns of the play is illustrated above by the relationship between Cleopatra and Antony; namely can the private be separated from the public and political domain? The political versus private cannot be that clear cut however as these two domains interlink: The public affection that Antony and Cleopatra display shows the world how they feel about each other and ... • 21. Self-Images and Selfies Self Image and Selfies: A Freudian Analysis Chosen as Oxford dictionaries as the 2013 word of the year, the term selfie refers to a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website . The term has made a definite mark on popular culture, the frequency usage increased over 17,000% in the 2012 2013 year (BBC News). With the rise in popularity there has also been much discussion on the possible effects of the selfie phenomena. Some articles argue that taking a high number of selfies is a sign of the increasing narcissism and self objectification of modern culture that may lead to mental health issues such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Others suggest that taking selfies empowers the individual and promotes healthy levels of self esteem. While viewpoints on the topic tend to be diametrically divided, a Freudian perspective provides support for both views, as the topic is more complex than it first seems. In order to understand the interest in selfies, their ramifications, and to better apply a Freudian perspective, it is important to first discuss the cultural prevalence and significance. Selfies are widespread due to the ease of access of the technology. People everywhere, from the US President and the Pope to astronauts in space to elementary school children have the ability to capture photos of themselves and have been involved in selfies. Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon, commonly known as Maimonides or by the acronym RaMBaM, was a Jewish scholar, astrologer and physician of the twelfth century considered to be one of Judaism s greatest sages. His revolutionary publications were essential in the development of the Shulchan Aruch, the practiced Code of Jewish Law and maintaining Jewish continuity throughout the ages. Maimonides was born in 1135 in Cordoba, Spain to his mother and father, Rabbi Maimon, and would go on to study medicine and philosophy in unison with his religious studies. From a young age, Maimonides father mentored him in the teachings of the Talmud, Torah, Jewish philosophy and secular sciences. His education in these areas would eventually fuel his writings. In 1148, when Maimonides was just 13, a Sunni Muslim Caliphate movement called the Almohades invaded Southern Spain, and he and his family were forced to flee their hometown. The Almohades invasion marked the end of the Golden Age of Jewish culture in Spain, where although Jews were not fist class citizens, they lived free of persecution and were able to conduct businesses and lead relatively peaceful lives. The Almohades invasion put great pressure on its Jewish inhabitants, posing a serious threat to Jewish continuity. The paramount reason human trafficking and smuggling has festered and grown roots and spread globally. It started as a grassroots effort on the local level where women and girls (it affects boys as well) would be used and sold for sex. Eventually, greed and corruption tagged along for the ride and at that point the crimes became an organized enterprise. At that point the crimes grew exponentially and spread worldwide and infested every crevice and nook on earth, no matter how small and insignificant it may. A stellar example of this the systematic rape, torture and killing of women of Yazidi Christian women in Iraq and the other region of the Middle East. Since we will never know the true motive of Lee Harvey Oswald, the only thing that we could do is make our own assumptions. That s also what ties in Jack Ruby to a conspiracy because killing Oswald, made it look like he was trying to hide something. This event has a lot of moving parts, especially with all of the different conspiracy theories. I wasn t all that familiar with the details of the assassination, but after gathering all of the information and reading about all the conspiracy theories, they all seem to be real possibilities. As in the case of Abram, Sarai and Jacob, the change of destiny is indicated by the change of name. This name Cephas is taken from the Aramaic vernacular and corresponds to the Greek Peter, Petros, which means a piece of rock a mass of rock detached from the living rock (T. Butler). It is a term which becomes a natural emblem of firmness and stability. It may be hard for us to see the fitness of such a name for a man apparently so unstable; but the fitness was perceived by Christ. Peter wavered often, even while under his Master s eye, and at least once afterward, but he continually became more and more like the rock that Christ wanted him to be and he was indeed a pillar of the church (W.B. Hill). We observe that all the time Christ was with the Twelve, Peter was a leader among them. Occasionally, Christ would select certain ones for special responsibilities; for example: Peter, James and John to witness the raising of Jarius daughter, the transfiguration, and the agony in the garden (G. Stokes). Now, why were these particular men selected on these occasions to be the recipients of special privileges and the bearers of the attendant responsibilities?
